You can usually stay in the UK for up to 6 months. If you need to visit the UK regularly over a longer period, you can apply for a long-term Standard Visitor visa that lasts 2, 5 or 10 years.

If you are planning to take a short course of study in the UK, such as English language course, training course, part of an overseas course, a short period of research, medical, veterinary or dentistry electives, you should apply for a Short-term study visa . You can study for up to 6 months (or up to 11 months if you are studying an English language course)

If you are planning to take a full-time below degree or a degree level course of study in the UK school, college or university, you should apply for a Student visa (ex. Tier 4 General). You can apply for a Business Visa if you want to visit the UK for any of the following reason:

• Fiancee visa (or Settlement Marriage visa) - the applicant to come to the UK for up to 6 months, register a marriage and apply for a Settlement Spouse visa within the UK.
• Spouse visa - If you have already registered your marriage to a UK national you can apply for a Spouse visa, which is issued for 2.5 years and includes the right to work. It can be extended once in the UK and lead to an ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) and UK citizenship.
• EEA Family Permit / EU Settlement Scheme family permit - if your spouse is living and working in the UK and is an EU national but does not have UK citizenship.
• Unmarried partners visa - if you are not married officially to a UK national but have lived together for two years.
• Same-sex partners visa - If you are same-sex partners, have already registered your marriage to a UK national or for unmarried partners, if you have lived together for two years.
• Dependant child visa (or Settlement Child visa) - if you want to bring your dependant child to the UK.
• General work visa (Tier 2) can be applied for if the applicant has been offered a skilled job in the UK.

• Do Pakistani Citizens Need a UK Visa?

Whether or not an individual will need a visa to travel to the UK depends on a) their nationality and b) their intended length of stay in the country.

EU/EFTA nationals, citizens from a few Commonwealth countries, and citizens from certain visa-exempt countries for the UK (such as the US, Japan, Singapore or Israel) will not need a visa to enter the UK if they are going to stay in the country for less than six months.

They will still be required to carry the required documents for a UK visa with them, and show those documents to the UK immigration officers at the port of entry. Moreover, they can stay in the UK without a visa for only three months if they are entering the country from Ireland.

However, if they intend to stay in the UK for six months or more, they will have to apply for a visa regardless of their nationality. Citizens from all other countries will need a visa to travel to the UK, irrespective of their proposed length of stay in the country.

Pakistan is a visa-required nation for the UK. So, Pakistani citizens will have to obtain a valid visa to enter the UK, whether they are planning to stay in the country for less than six months or longer.

Pakistani citizens will have multiple UK visa options to choose from, depending on their reasons to travel to the UK and intended length of stay. The main categories of UK visas are:

• Standard Visit visa for tourism, business, study and other permitted activities, for a maximum period of up to six months (long-term Standard Visitor visas are available for foreign nationals who come to the UK regularly, but they can stay for a maximum of six months per visit)
• Family visa to live in the UK for more than six months with a UK resident family member
• Transit visa for passing through the UK to another country

Foreign nationals fearing persecution in their home countries may also seek asylum in the UK. However, there is no UK asylum seeker visa. After arriving in the UK without any legal approval in the form of a valid visa, asylum seekers will have to apply for refugee status or humanitarian protection in the country.

The Nationalities and Borders Act 2022 introduced a provision for temporary refugee permission to stay, which would be valid for a minimum of 30 months and renewable thereafter, for Group 2 refugees (i.e. whose entry in the UK is considered unlawful). However, the Home Office paused the categorisation of refugees into such groups in July 2023.

The supporting documents you will be required to submit while applying for a UK visa from Pakistan will vary depending on your chosen visa type. We have provided here a list of general documents required for every UK visa application as well as certain documents specific to visa type.

The supporting documents for Pakistani nationals include (but not limited to):

• A valid passport, with at least one blank page
• Proof of financial means, such as bank statements etc.
• Tuberculosis test results, which is mandatory for people coming to the UK for six months or longer, if they have been living in Pakistan or another listed country within the last six months (or lived in Pakistan or another listed country for six months or more in the past)
• For work visas, UK job offer or employment contract, Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number and the name and sponsor licence number of the UK employer, criminal record certificate in case of certain job categories etc.
• For student visas, acceptance letter from a UK educational institution, parental consent to study in the UK for child students etc.
• Proof of relationship with the UK resident family member for family visas
• Business plan and endorsement from an approved body in the UK for an Innovator Founder visa
• Travel itinerary, medical insurance and proof of accommodation in the UK for Standard Visitor visas
• Proof of residence in case the visa applicant is currently living outside Pakistan
• Details of criminal, civil or immigration offences, if any
• Any other relevant documents depending on their specific circumstances etc.

Application for a UK visa from Pakistan will start with identifying the visa type appropriate in your circumstances. Please visit the UKVI website to determine what type of visa you will have to apply for, and what supporting documents you will be required to submit along with your visa application depending on your chosen visa type.

The UK visa application is an online process. You will have to create an account on the UKVI site to start with your visa application process, and follow the instructions carefully as provided on the site while filling up the online application form.

You may be required to pay the visa fees as well as a healthcare surcharge, if applicable, while filling up your online application. You may use a debit or credit card to pay the fees. Please note the reference number after paying the fees, which may be required for any future amendments to your application or visa appointment.

You will also have to upload your supporting documents online while applying for your UK visa. For people who do not have a scanner available or who are not comfortable using the internet, VFS Global can help them with uploading their documents in exchange for a service charge.

Once your online application is complete, please book an appointment with your nearest VFS Global centre in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi or Mirpur. On the date of your appointment, please visit the centre in person where your biometric information, i.e. fingerprints and facial image, will be taken. You will also have to submit your original passport (or any other travel document as applicable) at the centre.

The centre will get in touch with you once they have received your visa decision for collecting your passport. You may do so in person by visiting the centre, or VFS Global will send it to your address by courier for an additional fee.

Your UK visa processing time will vary depending on the visa type, the time of year, the volume of applications being handled by the visa authorities at the time of your application, and your personal circumstances.

In general, while visit, work, study and business visas take up to three weeks for processing, you may have to wait for up to 24 weeks to receive a decision on your UK family visa application. If UKVI will need more information for processing your visa, your waiting time will increase further.

Online visa application tracking is NOT AVAILABLE on UK Visas and Immigration website. To know the status of your UK visa application, you must use their email or phone option, which unfortunately is NOT FREE. You must provide your GWF number when calling or emailing them.

GWF number is the unique visa application number that was provided to you on your UK visa application submission. Without the GWF number, UK Visas and Immigration will not be able to provide you with a status update.

UK Visa Rejection Appeal from Pakistan

You can only appeal to the tribunal if you have the legal right to appeal – you’ll usually be told if you do in your decision letter. Talk to a solicitor or an immigration adviser if you’re unsure whether you can appeal. You have 28 days to appeal after you get your decision. If you have to leave the country before you’re allowed to appeal, you have 28 days to appeal once you’ve left the country. If you apply after the deadline, you must explain why – the tribunal will decide if it can still hear your appeal. Apply online if you can – online appeals are quicker than a post or fax appeals.

How to apply for a visa to come to the UK

Choose a visa.

You may need a visa to come to the UK to study, work, visit or join family.

There are different visas depending on:

• where you come from
• why you want to come to the UK
• how long you want to stay for
• your personal circumstances and skills

Before you apply, you must check if you need a visa and what type you need. Depending on your nationality, you might not need a visa to visit or transit through the UK.

Your application must be approved before you travel.

You do not need to apply for a visa if you’re an Irish citizen.

If you want to visit the UK

Apply for a Standard Visitor visa to visit the UK for up to 6 months. For example:

• for a holiday or to see family and friends
• for a business trip or meeting
• to do a short course of study

You must apply for a Marriage Visitor visa if you want to visit the UK to get married or register a civil partnership.

If you have a visitor visa you cannot take a job in the UK.

If you’re travelling through the UK

You might need a visa if you’re travelling through the UK on your way to another country, for example if you have a layover between flights.

If you want to study in the UK

Your course length, type and place of study affect which visa to apply for.

A Standard Visitor visa lets you do a short course of study that lasts no longer than 6 months.

A Short-term study visa lets you come to the UK to study an English language course that is over 6 months and up to 11 months.

A Student visa is usually for a longer course. You must be sponsored by a licensed college or university and have a confirmed place. On this visa, you may be able to do some work.

A Child Student visa is for 4 to 17 year olds who want to study at an independent school. If you’re 16 or over, this visa lets you do some work.

If you want to work in the UK

You can work in the UK on a short or long-term basis with a work visa. There are many types of work visa .

The visa you need depends upon:

• your skills and qualifications
• if you have a job offer and sponsorship
• if you want to bring your family with you
• what you’ll be doing - for example sporting, charitable or religious work

You can set up a business with an Innovator Founder visa .

If you want to join family in the UK

If you’re a spouse, partner or family member of someone who has British citizenship or settlement in the UK, you can apply for a family visa to join them. They may need to show that they can support you financially.

You may be able to apply for indefinite leave to remain ( ILR ) after a set amount of time living in the UK.

If your family member is in the UK on a visa

You may be able to apply for a visa to join a family member who’s in the UK on a visa. They must be either:

• your spouse or partner
• your parent if you’re 18 or under

Check what visa you’ll need to join them.

Family reunion visas for refugees

If you were separated from your partner or child when you were forced to leave your country, they can apply to join you in the UK.

Your family members can apply if you have been given asylum or 5 years’ humanitarian protection, and not have British citizenship.

If your family member is from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein

You can apply for a free EU Settlement Scheme family permit to come to the UK if you have a close family member who:

• was living in the UK by 31 December 2020
• has pre-settled or settled status
• you had a relationship with by 31 December 2020 (unless you’re applying for a child who was born or adopted after this date)

Close family members include your spouse or civil partner, child, grandchild, parent or grandparent.

A family permit lets you live, work and study in the UK for up to 6 months. You can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to stay in the UK after your family permit expires. You usually need to apply within 3 months of arriving in the UK.

Other ways to get permission to live in the UK

If you’re from the eu, switzerland, norway, iceland or liechtenstein.

If you started living in the UK by 31 December 2020, you may be able to apply to the free EU Settlement Scheme instead of applying for a visa. The deadline to apply was 30 June 2021, but you can still apply if you can show reasonable grounds for the delay in applying.

Check if you can still apply to the EU Settlement Scheme .

You can only apply from outside the UK if you have a valid passport or national identity card with a biometric chip.

Commonwealth citizens

You can apply for an Ancestry visa to work in the UK if you have a British grandparent and meet other eligibility criteria.

You may have right of abode to live in the UK.

If you’re a Commonwealth citizen and cannot prove your right to be in the UK, read about the Windrush scheme .

Returning residents

You’ll need to apply for a returning resident visa to come back to the UK if one of the following is true:

you had indefinite leave to remain under the EU Settlement Scheme (‘settled status’) and left the UK for more than 5 continuous years (or 4 continuous years if you’re a Swiss citizen or their family member)

you had permanent permission to stay in the UK (‘indefinite leave to remain’) but it was not under the EU Settlement Scheme and you left the UK for more than 2 years

Dear sir I have not received the passport yet. The decision was made on 28th February and still I didn’t get my passport and I paid Rs.2943 to get the passport at my home address. Invoice number: 2223GBRISB126169 TRN: 1000256700003 GWF number: GWF068975828

Did you manage to get your passports? Did you get in touch with someone? Any details that you can share? I am in the same position. Decision has been made and passport is not delivered, I have also paid for the courier service.

Study In UK

UK visa requirements and general immigration criteria are managed by UK Visas and Immigration, which has an easy-to-navigate site to help you determine whether you need a UK student visa. While Swiss nationals and those from the EU/EEA states do not currently need a visa to study in the UK, all other international students are likely to need one.

The result of the UK’s referendum on membership in the European Union (‘Brexit’) has led to some uncertainty over visa regulations, but the UK government has stated that there will be no change to the rights and status of EU citizens until 2021.

Types Of UK Student Visa

If you’re studying a short course and are over 18 years old, you may be eligible for the short-term study visa. This is valid up to six months for most short courses and can be extended for a stay of up to 11 months for English language courses.

If you’re studying a longer course, you’ll need to make sure your chosen institution holds a Tier 4 Sponsor License. You can either apply for a Tier 4 (Child) student visa (if you’re aged 4-17 and want to study at an independent school in the UK) or a Tier 4 (General) student visa for those aged 16 and over.

UK Student Visa Requirements

Your course provider may be willing to help you to apply for a UK student visa once you have been offered a place on a course; ask to find out if this is the case. You can apply for the visa up to three months in advance of the start date of your course. Check the  average visa processing  times for your country, and be sure to allow plenty of time.

UK student visas are awarded on a points-based system. In order to meet all the  UK student visa requirements , you’ll need to provide:

• Details of your passport
• A recent photograph
• An unconditional offer of a place on a course offered by a licensed Tier 4 Sponsor, evidenced by a ‘Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies’ (CAS) form from your course provider (worth 30 points)
• Proof of adequate English language skills , demonstrated by passing one of the secure English language tests (SELT). You will not need to provide this if you’re from an English-speaking country such as the United States or have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in an English-speaking country.
• Proof you have financial support throughout your stay in the UK (worth 10 points)
• If you’re a non-EU/EEA/Swiss student studying a sensitive subject, you may also need an  ATAS certificate

Proof of financial support can take the form of bank statements or a letter from your financial sponsor, showing you can cover your tuition fees, accommodation and living costs. You must prove that you have £1,015 (~US$1,300) per month for living costs if studying in the UK outside of London, and £1,265 (~US$1,600) a month for living costs if studying in London.

You may also be required to produce documents showing your academic qualifications, and to attend an interview or biometric test, which includes a digital scan of your fingerprints. Depending on your country of origin, you may also be required to have certain medical vaccinations or undertake a tuberculosis test.

If you’re 16 or 17 years old and applying for the Tier 4 (General) student visa, you must have written consent from your parents/guardians that you can live and travel independently.

You must  apply online  for the Tier 4 (General) Student visa, ensuring you’ve read the full guidance  here . You can apply up to three months before the start of your course.

UK Student Visa Fees

The current fee for the Tier 4 (General) student visa is £348 (~US$440), with an additional £348 fee per person for any dependents. You’ll also need to pay a healthcare surcharge of £150 per year (~US$190) in order to access the National Health Service (NHS) during your stay (this will rise to £300 (~US$380) from late 2018). The Short Term Study Visa costs £97 (~US$120) for the six month option and £186 (~US$240) for the 11 month visa.

When you enter the UK, a UK Border Agency officer will put a stamp on your passport that states the duration of your stay in the UK. For example, if your course is 12 months or more, you can stay for the full duration of the course plus an additional four months. You cannot extend your stay beyond this period. Before you arrive, you must make sure you are fully immunized, remembering to pack your immunization record in your hand luggage in case you are asked to show the Border Agency officer at your UK port of entry. You should also carry the documents relating to your studies (including your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies or CAS number), your proof of finances and your proof of accommodation. Depending on where you’re from, you may also be required to register with the police within seven days of arrival in the UK.
