Your laptop never has enough ports–especially if it's the Macbook Air this guide was written on. That forces you to carry an array of dongles so you can plug everything in. Fortunately, there's a better way. USB hubs can expand the number and kind of ports available, and USB docks let you turn a laptop into a full-blown workstation with one plug. After testing several USB hubs and docks, these are the best we've found for different needs.

There's a gray area between USB hubs and docks because they do (mostly) the same thing: add more ports and connectors to your computer. However, there are some slight differences, and it's worth understanding them before you buy one.

USB hubs are smaller, cheaper dongles that can add extra USB ports, SD card readers, display outputs, or a headphone jack. These often don't supply extra power, so you might be unable to charge gadgets plugged into them. They're also portable enough to throw in your laptop bag to use on the go.

USB docks are often larger and more expensive and are designed to spend most of their time on your desk. They often come with their own power supply, so they can charge other devices, and have multiple monitor outputs and Ethernet connections. If you frequently use your laptop at a desk, a dock can let you quickly connect it to a keyboard, mouse, monitors, and any other peripherals simultaneously.

Best USB-C Hub

This Anker USB hub is the one I carry in my camera bag everywhere. It plugs into the USB-C port on your laptop and provides two USB-A 3.0 ports, an HDMI output, and both a full-size and a MicroSD card reader. It's a versatile little thing that lets you plug in peripherals to your laptop, transfer data between your devices, and hook up your laptop to a projector or monitor at a moment's notice (provided you have an HDMI cable). Best of all, it's quite affordable.

A Basic USB-A Hub

Don't have a USB-C port on your laptop? This AmazonBasics hub will do the trick, even if it's about as bare-bones as hubs can get. It plugs into one USB-A port and gives you four more, supporting up to USB 3.0 speeds. You can use the hub by itself to plug in peripherals or flash drives, but if you jack in the included power adapter, the hub can charge gadgets plugged into it.

Best for Tablets

The USB-C port on recent iPad models means you're often forced to choose between charging or plugging in an accessory. This hub from Twelve South can fix that without adding too much bulk. It plugs directly into the USB-C port on the bottom of the tablet and offers up a headphone jack (yay!), a USB-A port, an HDMI output, and an extra USB-C port. It also comes with a short USB-C extension cable—handy if you have a thick case over your iPad that obscures the port a bit.

Best Hub if You Need External Storage

Wouldn’t it be nice if the USB hub you carry around with you had some storage of its own? This one from Satechi can (sort of) do that. In addition to the extra USB ports and 4K HDMI output it provides, it's also an external M.2 solid state drive enclosure. Open the panel on the back and you can slot in an internal SSD card and access it whenever you plug the hub into your computer. It's an incredibly handy feature that, frankly, more USB hubs and docks should include.

Just know that the M.2 SATA SSD is not included. One-terabyte drives like this one from Western Digital or this one from Samsung will do the job. (They come in other storage sizes too.)

Best Docking Station

It's tough for USB docks to stand out—most of them are simply boxes that add extra ports to your laptop—but Satechi managed to make one that really breaks the mold. This dock sits neatly under your laptop and elevates it a little ways off the desk, for a more ergonomic angle. On the rear, it adds an Ethernet port, five USB ports (two USB-A, two USB-C, and a third USB-C for charging), and three monitor outputs (two HDMI and one DisplayPort). A hardware switch on the back lets you turn the dock on or off, and a small strip of rubber on the top makes sure your laptop doesn't slide around on top.

Most interestingly, it also has an NVMe SSD slot in the bottom. While no SSD is included, you can plug in your own to give your dock its own storage to offload files from your laptop. The dock uses two USB-C plugs that run through a small plastic sleeve to line them up for some popular laptops like the Macbook Air, but you can pull the sleeve back to separate the plugs to fit other laptops. That said, you'll need both plugged in for the dock to work, and your two USB-C ports should probably be on the same side of the laptop, so make sure yours are before picking this one up.

With all these features, it would be a strong contender for one of our favorite docks already, but its low price really brings it over the finish line. The only downside is that it doesn't come with its own power supply like most of our other picks. However, the USB-C PD port on the rear supports up to 75-watt input, which it can pass onto your laptop. Connects via two USB-C ports

Best Dual-Monitor Dock

Sometimes, all you need is a quick and easy way to plug your laptop into a couple of monitors—preferably without spending hundreds of dollars for the privilege. This dock from Plugable is perfect for that goal. It supports two external monitors, up to 4K, with a choice between HDMI or DisplayPort for either one. This technically means it has four ports for monitors, but it can only use two at a time. Additionally, it has six USB 3.0 connectors (USB-A style) with four on the front and two on the rear, plus an Ethernet port on the back. It's one of the least expensive docking stations we've tested.

Best Triple-Monitor Dock

This dock from Plugable is a pretty substantial step up from our previous multi-monitor pick. It has three HDMI ports that can all be used simultaneously, plus four USB-A 3.0 ports and an Ethernet port on the rear. On the front, it has a headphone and microphone jack, a SD card reader, and a USB-C port that delivers up to 20 watts of power, more than enough to keep your phone charged throughout the day.

A More Robust Multi-Monitor Dock

This dock is pricier than the multi-monitor dock above, so it's not the first one I'd recommend. However, it has a much higher 100-watt output via its USB 4.0 charging port, which is one of its three USB-C ports. That means it can charge high-power laptops under load. It also has two DisplayPorts and one HDMI port (as opposed to the three HDMI ports on the Plugable dock above). Anker's 568 dock has more power across the board, but it comes at a premium, so unless you're sure you need the extra beef, it's probably safer to go with something cheaper. But this dock is well-suited to a modern, high-power system and performs really well there.

A Dock for Media Professionals

If you do any heavy video editing, game design, or other types of work that involve huge amounts of data, this dock has all the bells and whistles for you. On the front, it has a UHS-II SD card slot and micro SD card slot. On the rear, it has two HDMI 2.1 ports and two DisplayPort ports, supporting up to four separate 4K/60 Hz monitors simultaneously. An Ethernet port on the rear can connect your workstation to a local network with up to 2.5 Gbps speeds and, surprisingly, that might actually be a bottleneck for your setup. Three USB-A ports (two on the rear, one on the front) support the newer USB 3.2 spec, capable of up to 10 Gbps speeds. All the other devices in the chain will need to also support USB 3.2 to take advantage of those speeds, but if your goal is to put together a ludicrously high-speed workstation, few docks we've tested will help you more than this one.

A Luxury Dock for Beefy Workstations

This indulgent dock from Satechi comes with three Thunderbolt 4 connectors (as well as a fourth for plugging into your laptop), which means you can get some of the fastest data transfer speeds available today, provided your laptop or PC supports the Thunderbolt 4 standard too. You also get three USB-A 3.0 ports, gigabit Ethernet, a combo headphone/mic jack, and an SD card reader. It also comes with its own power supply, to help keep all the gadgets running when you plug them in. It's among the priciest docks I tested, but if you do a lot of heavy-duty tasks like transferring 4K video footage or hooking your laptop up to multiple 4K monitors, this is the dock that's going to serve your needs.

For Portable Power

Most of the highest-end docks we test come with bulky, external power blocks they need in order to work. That's fine if your dock stays on your desk, but it's a pain if you ever want to bring your dock with you. This dock from OWC, however, has its power block built-in. It comes with a typical figure 8-style power cord, the same kind you might have laying around from a dozen different game consoles, speaker systems, and other larger electronics. The dock features an SD card slot, an HDMI port that supports up to an 8K display, an ethernet port, and three USB-A ports (one USB 2.0 on the front, two USB 3.0 on the back). An USB-C port on the front supports USB 3.2 for up to 10 Gbps transfer speeds, and two more USB-C ports on the rear can connect more devices, including another external display. Taken together, it's the kind of power we normally expect from a typical desktop dock, but it's substantially more portable.

An Overly Indulgent Dock for Up to Four Monitors

Do you have an 8K display? Or perhaps four different 4K monitors ? Is your workstation so robust it can reasonably be described as a control room ? If so, the Anker 778 might be the best fit for you. It supports up to 100-watt charging via a Thunderbolt 4 port, and it has one HDMI and two DisplayPort plugs that can each support up to 8K at 30 frames per second, plus another Thunderbolt 4 downstream port. With all these combined, you can add up to four 4K displays, which is nuts. That might explain the absurdly high price.

Honorable Mentions

We test a lot of USB hubs and docks and, quite frankly, most of them are … fine. They're fine! We get into the nitty-gritty for specific use-cases to find the best, but that leaves a bunch of devices that are great options, even if they don't make our top picks. Here's a selection of some of our favorites, past favorites, or just alternatives to our picks above.

• Plugable UD-3900C Dual Monitor Docking Station for $120 : This was our top pick for a while, but it's looking a little long in the tooth. It has two HDMI ports for dual-monitor setups, but it doesn't come with its own power supply and it has fewer USB 3.0 ports than many of our other more modern picks. It is still fairly inexpensive, though, if you just need a cheap dock.
• Plugable USB-C Triple Display Docking Station for $150 : This was previously our top pick for multi-monitor setups, and it's still a great, slightly less expensive option. This one lacks the SD card reader, extra charging port, or headphone and microphone jacks of our new pick, but it has a couple of extra USB 3.0 ports and supports up to three monitors.
• Satechi Triple 4K Display Docking Station for $300 : This was a strong contender for our triple-monitor pick, but it's more expensive than the Plugable option and lacks some of its nicer features like an SD card slot. However, this one has more USB ports on the front (two USB-C, one USB-A), and while they don't charge quite as fast, two of them support 7.5-watt charging which can keep phones topped off.
• Plugable USB 3.0 Dual Monitor Horizontal Docking Station for $78 : This is the cheapest docking station we've tested, and if you have the most barebones needs, it can be worth a look. It supports two monitors, although it has one HDMI and one DVI port to do so. The dock comes with both DVI-to-HDMI and DVI-to-VGA adapters, making this dock probably most useful for connecting the old gear sitting around the office conference room.

Is this Docking station powerful enough for my HP Victus laptop? I'm going to use it to power 2 monitors.

Most computers don't have enough ports for all your devices so if you want to connect all of those things at once, you'll run out of USB-C ports. Not to worry, though, as a USB-C hub or dock with multiple ports will take care of that problem. There are a lot of options, and this is a list of the best USB-C hubs that we've tested.

What's the best USB-C hub overall?

The best USB-C hub overall is the EZQuest USB-C Multimedia eight-port Hub . There are less expensive options, but the EZQuest combines an excellent assortment of ports, durability for travel and reliability over several months of testing. It even has labels on the top to get your devices connected faster with less fumbling. EZQuest makes several other USB-C hubs including a 13-in-one model also on this list. However, if a more robust dock with Thunderbolt support is necessary, the best we've tested right now is the Accell Thunderbolt 4 Docking Station  thanks to an attractive low-profile design and well-rounded port assortment, and it doesn't get hot when put to full use. 

Narrowing down your options and finding the best USB-C hub comes down to knowing how portable you need it to be, exactly which connections you need and your desired data transfer speed. Best USB-C hubs of 2024

A little of everything, ezquest usb-c multimedia 8-port hub.

This USB-C hub has all the essentials most would need for office or home use at a reasonable price, especially if your laptop is limited to only USB-C ports. There are three USB-A ports, including one with power delivery, microSD and SD card slots, and an HDMI out that supports resolutions up to 4K at 30Hz. At the end is a Gigabit Ethernet connection with an activity LED (something other hubs this size typically leave off). But what sets it apart from others at this size are the handy labels printed on top of the anodized aluminum case. 

There is a 100-watt USB-C pass-through for power delivery, with 15 watts used to power the hub. The hub is lightweight, which makes it great for travel but also means any cords you plug into it could cause it to slide around your desk -- a common issue with hubs this size. But if you're looking for a single hub to cover everything from an external display and wired web access to charging your phone, this has you covered. 

Best budget USB-C dock

Monoprice 6-in-1 usb-c multiport 4k hdmi adapter.

We've used many Monoprice devices over the years, and they've regularly delivered more for the money. This slim six-in-one travel dock is no different, giving you just enough to hook up your laptop to peripherals and a monitor up to 4K at 60Hz. Also, should you need an Ethernet port, there is a seven-in-one model for $13 more . 

Best for Thunderbolt 4

Accell thunderbolt 4 docking station.

Accell's slim, low-profile Thunderbolt 4 Docking Station is one of the most compact we've tested without sacrificing performance or ports. There are two Intel-certified Thunderbolt 4 ports on the rear as well as a DisplayPort 1.4 connector that, combined, can drive dual UHD 4K monitors at 60Hz or a single 8K display at 30Hz. Another Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port on the front connects to your PC or Mac. The port is shifted all the way to the right so that the cable doesn't block other ports and makes it easier to keep the cable out of the way. 

Three USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A ports, a USB 2.0 Type-A port, an SD 4.0 UHS-II card reader, a 3.5mm audio combo jack and Gigabit Ethernet port round out the connection options. And even with the dock fully loaded, it remained relatively cool compared with others we've tested.

Best USB-C Hub for MacBooks

Plugable 5-in-1 usb-c magsafe hub.

Although there are hubs with more connections that plug directly into a MacBook's USB-C ports, this Plugable hub stands alone with its notch for Apple's MagSafe power connector. Ports include two USB-A 3.0 ports, a combo headphone/mic jack, Ethernet (in the back so it's out of the way) and a USB-C port. And unlike other small hubs like this, the USB-C port can do what the MacBook's can: data transfer up to 40Gbps, display output up to a 6K resolution at 60Hz and power throughput up to 100 watts.

Most people, including me, use hub and dock interchangeably but they are different devices. A hub adds more ports to a computer to attach more devices. The Element Hub, for instance, turns one Thunderbolt 4 port on your laptop into three Thunderbolt 4 ports so you can attach extra displays, high-speed storage and peripherals. It also gives you four USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports with data speeds up to 10Gbps to add USB-A devices. And the hub can be daisy-chained to another Thunderbolt 4 dock or hub for even more connections. 

The included power adapter (it's actually larger than the hub itself) can deliver up to 60 watts of charging power to attached devices. That's not enough for more power-hungry laptops but fine for a Chromebook and smaller laptops like a Dell XPS 13 or Apple MacBook Air. You can also disconnect it from your computer and just use it to power up your phone, tablet and other devices. 

One other nice touch: CalDigit made the design reversible so you can flip it on your desk to have whichever ports you'd like facing forward. 

Best for three displays at 4K

Ugreen usb-c triple display docking station.

Ugreen's tiny tower of ports uses a DisplayLink chipset to drive three displays at up to 4K at 60Hz via its DisplayPort and dual HDMI outputs with Windows or MacOS systems. Windows users can opt to run one display at up to 8K at 30Hz plus two at 4K at 60Hz. 

DisplayLink software is required to drive the displays properly. There's also no power supply included, just a USB-C cable. If you're using it with a laptop with a USB-C power adapter, you can use it to power the dock. It supports up to 100-watt power delivery letting you charge your laptop as well as power the dock. 

It handles more than displays, too, with one 10Gbps and two 5Gbps USB-A ports, a 10Gbps USB-C port, a combo headset jack, Gigabit Ethernet and SD and microSD card slots. The minimal footprint helps keep your desk tidy, and it's light enough to travel with if you needed to (but there are better options for that on this list). 

Thunderbolt 3 with power for charging

The PowerExpand Elite is part USB-C dock and part charging station. In back are 85- and 15-watt Thunderbolt 3 ports, and in front is an 18-watt USB-C power delivery port. A Thunderbolt 3 port supports up to a 5K-resolution display at 60Hz while its HDMI 2.0 port can support a display up to 4K resolution at 60Hz. Or you can run a USB-C-to-HDMI dual splitter and connect two 4K displays at 30Hz so you can run up to three monitors between the HDMI port and Thunderbolt 3 ports. 

You'll also have four USB-A ports, a Gigabit Ethernet jack and MicroSD and SD card reader. A 3.5mm combo jack handles audio output and input.

To provide enough juice to run everything, though, the PowerExpand Elite has a large 180-watt power adapter. Also, the fanless design means the body is one big heat sink so it can get hot when it's fully loaded. You can stand it vertically to help keep it cooler. 

Best for a laptop on a stand

Lention cb-c37 usb-c hub.

Most small USB-C hubs have short attached cables. That's fine if your laptop is on a desk and not on a laptop stand  and that desk has plenty of space directly next to your laptop's USB-C port. For those who could use some extra cable reach, though, the Lention C37 is ideal.

The USB device is still compact and lightweight but has a 1-meter cable (3.3 feet). It has dual USB-C ports with 60-watt power delivery, two USB-A ports, microSD and SD card slots and a 3.5mm headphone jack. On the end is an HDMI output that supports 4K at 30Hz or lower resolutions at 60Hz. This is also a great option for desktops that are kept on the floor. 

For those who still need a VGA output

Ezquest ultimate plus 12-port usb type-c multimedia hub.

The Ultimate Plus shows off just what's possible with a single USB-C port. Along with four USB 3.0 type-A ports, there are microSD and SD card slots, a 3.5mm combo headset jack and a Gigabit Ethernet jack. But the biggest reason to choose this model is its support for three displays. 

There are two full-size HDMI outputs joined by an old-school VGA output. The VGA can only handle outputting at 1080p, but one HDMI can output at resolutions up to 4K at 60Hz while the other can output up to 4K at 30Hz. That's a lot for one compact desktop dock and a single connection to your laptop or desktop. 

In our tests, it lived up to its promise of handling all of its connections at once. The ports might not offer the fastest speeds of other docks (the USB-A ports top out at 5Gbps for example), but if three monitors and a lot of extra connections on your desk are what matters, this is the dock for you.

Discreet iMac port addition

This add-on dock slides right over the foot of a 24-inch iMac. It includes USB-A and USB-C ports, plus slots for both microSD and SD cards and even an internal slot for an M.2 storage drive. The 11-inch wide dock also has the exact footprint as the iMac's color-matched keyboard, so it can sit on top of the dock/foot combo when not being used. At $150, it's a little on the pricey side, and there are no HDMI or DisplayPort outputs. But if you're looking for a tidy solution to add some extra ports to an iMac, this is a sweet solution.

What's the difference between a usb-c hub and a docking station.

A USB-C hub essentially acts like a splitter from a USB-C port on a laptop or desktop. They are typically small and lightweight and don't require a separate power supply; they draw power directly from the computer. Because of this, the ports might be less capable of data and power output compared with a powered dock. 

However, many USB-C hubs feature a USB-C port with power delivery, or PD. This lets you use a USB-C power adapter, such as the one that may have come with your laptop, to pass power to your laptop and other ports. This can increase display support as well as speed up charging for connected devices like a phone or a tablet. 

A USB-C docking station basically turns a laptop into a desktop. It is a larger, powered device that dramatically increases the number of external displays and peripherals that can be connected to a laptop. Because they typically use a large power adapter, they are not as portable as a hub but can power and recharge the connected laptop. Since many are made to be left connected to a monitor(s), some are designed to be mounted on the rear of a display to help clean up cables on your desk. 

Is a USB-C port the same as a USB port?

The USB port most are familiar with is USB Type-A. Sometimes called a standard or regular USB port, it is rectangular and directional, which requires you to properly align tabs inside the connectors. The newer USB-C port is a small oval that uses a reversible connector so that you don't need to flip it around to get the correct position.

Are all USB-C ports the same?

While USB-C ports may appear the same from device to device, they are not. Even USB-C ports on the same laptop might have different capabilities. For instance, Thunderbolt 3 or 4 devices will only be fully supported by a computer with the corresponding Thunderbolt USB-C port. However, you can't just look at the port and know exactly what you have. Check with your computer manufacturer for what your laptop (or desktop) model supports before you buy a USB-C dock or adapter.

As far as USB-C hubs go, the EZQuest Multimedia Hub is the best out there. With a competitive price, all the right ports to manage extra PC peripherals and storage devices, the added perk of 100W passthrough power delivery, and compatibility with virtually every platform, this sleek and travel-friendly hub will get the job done. While its lack of support for 60Hz on external displays and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity make this a device more suited for professionals and casual consumers, it still offers incredible versatility that any laptop user can make the most out of. 2. Plugable USB-C 7-in-1 Hub

Plugable is known to deliver quality USB-C hubs and docking stations, but its USB-C 7-in-1 Hub knocks it out of the park. At its price (currently  listed  at $27) and the number of different ports and features it sports, this USB-C hub is a steal. With three USB 3.0 ports with 5Gbps transfer speeds, HDMI 1.4 connectivity which can support 4K resolution at 30Hz, and two SD card readers, there’s not much else a laptop user who is on the move will need. 3. Kensington G1000P USB-C Mini Dock

The Kensington G1000P USB-C Mini Dock is a portable pocket rocket that can expand the potential of MacBooks, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops that have sacrificed their ports for a sleek design. It may not be the flashiest USB-C hub around, but it doesn’t need to be when its compact form factor and reliable selection of ports can give your ultraportable laptop the connectivity it needs. With its pocketable, compact design and some heavy-duty USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, Kensington’s G1000P USB-C Mini Dock fills the gap between needing more ports and not having to lug around a hefty docking station. But not too many more ports. While its hybrid USB-C hub capabilities of delivering 85W charging and lightweight form factor are useful, an extra port of two would have made this Mini Dock go the distance. Still, for Windows laptops, MacBook, and Chromebook users who only need a couple of reliable ports, this makes it onto our list of best USB-C hubs. 4. Targus USB-C Dual HDMI 4K Docking Station

It’s unfair to call Targus’ USB-C Dual 4K Docking Station an actual “docking station,” as it doesn’t have nearly enough ports to contend with those formidable accessories. But I can see why Targus has called it one. It boasts 100W Power Delivery and two HDMI 2.0 inputs with 4K capabilities at 60Hz — that’s not something many USB-C hubs can do. MacBook Air  or  Dell XPS 13  owners are due an awakening for port expansion, but any laptop user will get a kick out of how simple yet handy Targus’ dock can be in most circumstances. The USB-C Dual 4K Docking Station is a hybrid USB-C hub in disguise. It could have benefitted from an extra USB-A port, (as well as better port management), but it’s still an incredibly handy accessory any laptop and tablet user will get great use out of. 5. Kensington SD1650P USB-C 4K Portable Docking Station

The Kensington SD1650P USB-C Single 4K Portable Docking Station is the “something more” owners of multiple devices should be interested in. Not only does the hybrid dock charge your Windows laptop with impressive 100W pass-through power while adding several ports, but it can also do the same for a  MacBook ,  iPad , and even an Android tablet. If it supports USB-C connectivity, Kensington’s dock will, more likely than not, work like a charm. The SD1650P Portable Docking Station’s compatibility is hard to beat, and since it can work off a devices’ power supply without needing a power adapter (you’ll lose the 100W power pass through), the device is a fantastic choice for travelling professionals. The ability to immediately give virtually all your devices extra ports, video output options, and a power supply using one USB-C port makes this hybrid portable dock one of the best USB-C hubs on the market, especially for MacBook users. It’s a shame the price and limited selection of ports lets the SD1650P Portable Docking Station down, especially when other hubs are significantly more affordable. 6. Kensington SD1600P USB-C Mobile Dock

The Kensington SD1600P USB-C Mobile Dock is unique as it acts as a viable docking station and an excellent USB-C hub for laptop users on the move. Its USB-C passthrough power supply and additional ports will free up all your other laptop inputs while charging your laptop and any other devices connected to it. Don’t need a power supply? That’s fine, as it can also be powered by your laptop. While Kensington labels the SD1600P USB-C Mobile Dock as a docking station on the device’s listing  page , it also claims it can use a laptop’s battery when traveling — which is, by the company’s  definition , a USB-C hub. In truth, it simply brings the best of both worlds. 7. Dell USB-C Mobile Adapter (DA310)

Ultra-portable and ultra-powerful, the Dell USB-C Mobile Adapter is a USB-C hub that exchanges one port for a variety of seven more including HDMI, DisplayPort, Type-C and Type-A USB ports, and a speedy 1Gbps Ethernet port. The Mobile Adapter can also deliver up to 90W of Power Delivery and transmits data at solid rates, but it is a little pricey, and doesn't do cable management very well.

8. Landhoo 5-in-1 USB Type-C Hub

You may not have heard of accessory-maker Landhoo before, but this snap-on hub, available in silver, space gray, black, gold and rose gold, is starting the company out on the right foot with us. 

Not only does it offer an HDMI output port, dual USB 3.0 ports, an SD memory reader, and a microSD memory reader, but its pass-through-charging Type-C port means it's good for those with only one Type-C port. The only thing I disliked is that its connection didn't feel as stable as others, as it jiggled uncomfortably when I connected devices to it.

9. HooToo USB-C Adapter 3.1

It's easy to see why this is a best-seller on Amazon. Pass-through charging, SD card readers, three USB 3.0 ports, and HDMI output mean it has everything we look for in a Type-C hub. But unless you want those card readers, you're better off saving $25 and buying Aukey's squarish-puck hub, which packs one more USB 3.0 port.

10. Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock

The Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock has four ports: one USB 3.1 port, an HDMI port, a DisplayPort, and an RJ45 Ethernet port, which all functioned correctly. This dock allows you to enjoy fast Thunderbolt speeds and the luxury of two 4K extended displays, and it also has a slim design with a convenient tuck-away wire. 

However, the dock isn’t compatible with USB Type-C, so it’ll only connect to a Thunderbolt 3 port, and it doesn’t have a Type-C connector to replace the one that it’s taking up. 

The Elgato Thunderbolt Dock Utility app that it does offer is available for only macOS (it allows you to disconnect all storage devices at once and tells you when it's safe to disconnect the dock itself). 

It’s a little pricey for $149 (even when it’s on sale for $99), but overall, the Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock is a solid choice if you’re interested in connecting to high-resolution displays.

USB-C: What you need to know

USB Type-C has plenty of perks, and with one of the USB Type-C hubs you might be considering getting, you'll be able to copy files at USB 3.1 speeds, deliver enough power to charge a laptop, or use Alt Mode to send other types of data using DisplayPort or  Thunderbolt 3  connections. Essentially, it's a tiny, super-fast connector that many of the best laptops today have a connector for, with the only downside being that USB A or USB B connectors can't be used with a USB Type-C port (that's where a USB Type-C hub comes in handy). However, there are USB-C accessories and cables that make charging and transferring data even better for the  best laptops ,  best Chromebooks , and  best tablets  on the market. Better yet, they don't have to be too pricey, either.

Většina notebooků přitom disponuje nejčastěji jen dvěma až třemi USB porty. A když dojdou? Tato situace naštěstí není neřešitelná. Stačí si pořídit tzv. USB hub . Co je to USB hub?

Plug and play, výběr podle počtu a druhu usb portů, jakou rychlost potřebuji, připojení k počítači, ceny usb hubů, nejlepší značky usb hubů, jak vybrat usb hub / rozbočovač.

Podle čeho v obchodě hledat ten správný USB rozbočovač čili hub ? V první řadě musíte vědět, k čemu ho budete potřebovat. Jaká zařízení budete připojovat, kolik jich bude, jakými rozhraními disponují a co od nich chcete? Rozhodovat tedy bude počet a typ i standard portů, ale třeba i způsob napájení a připojení a samozřejmě taky cena.

USB huby představují v zásadě nástroj blízce příbuzný dokovací stanici pro notebooky. V e-shopech je obvykle najdete ve stejné kategorii a funkce se do značné míry překrývají. Dokovací stanice jsou však specifičtější a zároveň komplexnější – z vašeho notebooku jsou schopny vytvořit výkonnou pracovní jednotku s širokými možnostmi využití.

USB huby jsou poněkud jednodušší a většinou taky opravdu výrazně levnější řešení. Jde zkrátka o jakousi USB „prodlužku“. Funguje na stejném principu jako ta klasická se zásuvkami. Výhodou je vysoká flexibilita…

V případě USB hubů není třeba složitě řešit žádnou instalaci a de facto ani kompatibilitu. Jde o zařízení vytvořená tak, abyste je zkrátka zastrčili do portu v počítači a mohli okamžitě používat. Běžné modely navíc potěší velmi dostupnou cenou.

Je nabíledni, že u zařízení, které má replikovat USB vstupy, bude zásadním faktorem výběru právě jejich počet a typ . Nabídka je v tomto směru poměrně rozmanitá. Především je však třeba vědět, co vlastně chcete. Začněme tím jednodušším, tedy počtem portů.

Počet USB portů

Jeden port slouží pro samotné připojení k počítači – tomu se ještě budeme věnovat – a nepočítá se do počtu portů. Podstatné jsou jen volné, použitelné porty pro připojení dalších zařízení . Jednoznačně nejoblíbenější jsou momentálně modely se 4 USB porty . Nabízejí dostatečné rozšíření a notebook je většinou „utáhne“ i bez nutnosti externího napájení. Taky jejich rozměr zůstává skladný.

Existují však i modely, které mají portů méně, ale taky podstatně více – např. i více než sedm. Taková zařízení už poslouží náročnějším uživatelům, ale obvykle zároveň potřebují vlastní napájení , jsou rozměrnější a většinou taky dražší.

Typ USB portů

V záležitosti značení USB konektorů a rozhraní má leckdo zmatek a není divu. V první řadě je třeba rozlišovat mezi standardem přenosu a typem samotného konektoru . I tak je celkových verzí, standardů a variant až přehnaně mnoho. My se omezíme na přehled těch nejčastějších, s nimiž se lze u USB hubů setkat.

Na hubu budou USB porty se standardem 1.0 nebo 2.0, potažmo 3.0 nebo i 3.1 či 3.2. Jednoduše řečeno, čím vyšší číslo, tím novější a rychlejší standard .

• USB 1.0 umožňuje přenos rychlostí pouze 1,5 Mbit/s (187 kB/s), což je zkrátka málo. Dnes už jde o zastaralý standard.
• Mnohem běžnější je USB 2.0 s rychlostí až 480 Mbit/s čili 60 MB/s
• USB 3.0 a 3.1 (až 10 Gbit/s čili 1,25 GB/s).

Mezi standardy 2.0 a 3.0 je obrovský skok. Trojkové USB je však zpětně kompatibilní se staršími standardy, takže se nemusíte obávat nekompatibility. A pak je tu i verze USB 3.2 , která v poslední generaci dosahuje ještě dvojnásobné rychlosti proti 3.1. S tou se však běžně u USB hubů ještě moc nesetkáte, o USB 4 (zatím) nemluvě.

A pak je tu otázka typu konektoru . V drtivé většině huby využívají formát USB type-A . USB A je to klasické a dobře známé „placaté“ USB, kterým se připojují klávesnice, myši , externí disky, flash disky a další a další zařízení. Je nejpoužívanější, tudíž je nasnadě, že většina USB rozbočovačů hostí právě tyto porty.

Setkat se však můžete i s novějším typem USB-C . Ten nejenže využívá nové a rychlé standardy a podporuje vyšší proud (což oceníte při nabíjení různých zařízení), ale díky symetrickému oválnému provedení už nemusíte každé zařízení připojovat nadvakrát, abyste trefili správnou polohu.

Pokud jde o rychlost, USB 2.0 je i dnes dostačující standard pro připojení základní periferie , jako jsou různé klávesnice, myši, mechaniky apod. Zkrátka tam, kde nejsou vysoké nároky na datový tok, lze tuto verzi zcela bezproblémově používat. V případě externích disků nebo třeba fotoaparátů či videokamer (stahování fotek a videí) už nejspíš oceníte rychlejší přenos dat v podobě USB 3.0 a výše . V tom případě je však potřeba, aby bylo i připojení hubu do počítače uskutečněno přes USB daného (vyššího) standardů.

V každém případě je dnes už výhodnější pořídit si hub s vyšším standardem . Cenový rozdíl proti modelu s 2.0 a 3.0 porty nemusí být prakticky ani znát – ale rozdíl ve „výkonu“ bude velice citelný. Doporučujeme tedy kupovat huby s USB alespoň 3.0 nebo vyššími.

Jiné konektory

Většina základních hubů disponuje pouze USB porty (typ A, případně i C). U pokročilejších, které už hraničí s dokovacími stanicemi, se můžete setkat i s jinými rozhraními. Může zde být například HDMI port nebo slot pro SD kartu, rozhraní DisplayPort a řada dalších. Zde záleží na potřebách konkrétního uživatele.

Jak bude hub připojen k počítači? Existují dvě možnosti. Buď je tělo hubu vybaveno vyčnívajícím konektorem a do zdrojového zařízení ho prostě zacvaknete, anebo – což je častější – je hub vybaven kabelem s USB A koncovkou . První řešení je poněkud elegantnější a kompaktnější. Druhé nabízí větší flexibilitu a jde přece jen o osvědčenější a běžnější formu.

Běžné USB rozbočovače lze napájet přímo z počítače . Ale řada těchto zařízení má i možnost připojení externího napájení, ideálně s microUSB konektorem, kdy můžete použít běžnou mobilní nabíječku. Díky tomu lze hub napájet vyšším proudem než při prostém čerpání energie přes zdrojové zařízení. To znamená, že můžete přes USB hub následně provozovat náročnější zařízení nebo i jiná zařízení (např. mobilní telefony atd.) účinně nabíjet.

Za kolik lze pořídit kvalitní USB rozbočovač , který vám zajistí porty pro potřebná zařízení a příslušenství? Cena může začínat na velmi přijatelných částkách. Například základní modely hubů koupíte už do 200 Kč . Najdete zde přitom známé značky jako Trust, Yankee, Hama či Axagon . U těchto modelů čekejte spíše 2.0 USB rozhraní a ne víc než 4 porty.

Oblíbenou relaci představuje kategorie od 2 do 5 stovek Kč . Ta skýtá největší výběr a najdete zde naprostou většinu nejprodávanějších modelů . Běžné je rozhraní USB 3.0 a čtyři nebo i více portů. Nad 500 Kč už začínají rozbočovače pro náročnější zájemce. Větší množství portů, nejnovější standardy nebo více druhů portů.

Kteří výrobci USB hubů patří k osvědčeným? Jedny z nejprodávanějších USB hubů nabízí značka Axagon , navíc i za velmi dostupné ceny. Následují ji další známé značky jako například Trust či Hama , obě nabízí velmi široký výběr. Stejně tak značka i-Tec , u níž najdete i drahé a pokročilé modely. Dobrou volbou je i značka Yankee .
