A portable heated blanket is one of the best ways to ward off that winter chill, whether you’re traveling to a top American ski resort or planning a snow-dusted European city break. Travel-friendly versions are lighter and more compact than their standard-sized siblings — look for throw or twin blankets rather than those meant for queen or king beds.

Choose car-charger-compatible models if you’re embarking on a winter road trip or battery-powered ones if you’ll be outside for sporting events and camping adventures. Hard-wearing fabrics, the ability to throw the blanket in the washing machine, and a protective carry bag are also recommended for withstanding the rigors of life on the road.

Best Overall

Gobi heat zen portable heated blanket.

With multiple heat settings and the ability to run off battery or outlet power, this is a versatile blanket for every occasion.

At over 5 pounds, it isn’t the lightest option on this list and is probably better suited to car travel than air travel.

Made from durable recycled polyester, the Gobi Heat Zen Portable Heated Blanket is water resistant and more than capable of standing up to life on the go, whether you’re camping, tailgating, or heading to the beach . It can be plugged into the wall for unlimited power when you’re relaxing in your vacation rental but also runs off battery for on-the-go adventures. You can choose between three heat settings ranging from 116 to 136 degrees Fahrenheit. On the lowest setting the battery can last up to 10 hours; on the highest, it can last up to six hours. An LED indicator shows the battery level so you’re never left without power unexpectedly.

The battery recharges fully via USB cable in approximately four to five hours. The blanket uses three heat zones and conductive thread technology to disperse warmth evenly throughout, while the fleecy polyester top layer is wonderfully soft. If it gets dirty, detach the battery and throw it in the washing machine. The fact that the battery can be detached also means you can swap it out for a backup if you’re planning a multi-day trip and want to extend the blanket’s runtime. Choose from a range of colors including pine (green), mist (gray), and stream (blue), and enjoy the peace of mind offered by a one-year warranty.

The Details: 70 x 50 inches | Recycled polyester | Max temperature: 136 degrees Fahrenheit | 3 temperature settings | Battery and mains powered | Up to 10 hours runtime

Best Budget

Hiundee electric blanket with foot pocket.

Ten temperature settings and a cozy foot pocket ensure just the right amount of evenly distributed heat.

This blanket does not have battery backup and is therefore only suitable for travelers with access to power outlets.

Retailing for roughly a sixth of the price of our overall winner yet packed with convenient features, the Hiundee Heated Blanket is our top budget pick. It features warm, cozy flannel on both sides and folds down small enough to fit in your suitcase without taking up too much precious space. It does require mains power, though, so make sure you’ve got access to plug sockets and the correct adapter for your destination.

The blanket offers 10 temperature settings ranging from 59 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit and reaches maximum heat in approximately five minutes. We particularly love the integrated foot pocket. Other key features include the ability to set a timer so that the blanket switches off after one, two, four, six, or eight hours; and the fact that it switches off after eight hours regardless to save energy and prevent overheating. It’s machine washable and available in beige, blue, or gray.

The Details: 62 x 50 inches | Flannel, non-woven fabric | Max temperature: 131 degrees Fahrenheit | 10 temperature settings | Mains powered

Best Wearable

Venustas heated wearable blanket.

The hoodie style affords complete freedom of movement and up to 10 hours of heat.

The hem is calf length, which means you won’t have full body coverage unless you’re sitting down with your legs tucked beneath you.

If you love the idea of a heated blanket but don’t want to sit still to enjoy it, the Venustas Heated Wearable Blanket Hoodie is for you. Made from soft polyester with a cozy Sherpa fleece lining, it uses a 7.4-volt battery pack to power heated panels on the chest and back. With your hands free, you can take photos, build campfires, cheer on your favorite team, and then tuck your legs up into the oversized hoodie on the couch at the end of the day. The battery heats quickly and takes between four and five hours to charge.

Runtime is anywhere from three hours on the highest setting (130 degrees) to 10 hours on the lowest setting (95 degrees). You can also use the USB port to connect and charge your phone. The hoodie includes a compact carry bag, making it easy to pack into your trunk or suitcase. It’s machine washable and comes in a range of solid colors and fun prints from avocados to American-flag-wearing sloths.

The Details: Polyester, Sherpa fleece | 130 degrees | 3 temperature settings | Battery powered | Up to 10 hours runtime

Best Battery-operated

Cozee battery powered heated blanket.

This patented, battery-powered blanket has a built-in surge protection and an automatic shutoff feature.

It has a shorter runtime than our best overall pick.

We think the Cozee Battery-powered Heated Blanket is a worthy investment. Its major selling point is tried-and-tested quality. It’s the only patented battery-powered heated blanket on the market, with built-in surge protection and the ability to shut off automatically should any components fail. And with a durable, weather-resistant exterior suitable for rain and snow, it’s a great fit for outdoor adventurers.

The blanket warms up in just five minutes and stays hot for approximately three hours. Choose one of three temperature settings, with the hottest reaching 108 degrees. Whichever you go for, the micro-plush velour lining feels great against the skin. The battery can be topped up using the included mains or car chargers (great for long-distance road trips ). You can also use it to charge your phone. Finally, a sturdy carry case adds to this blanket’s travel chops.

The Details: 60 x 60 inches | Polyester, micro-plush velour | Max temperature: 108 degrees | 3 temperature settings | Battery powered | Up to three hours of runtime

Ourea USB Heated Blanket

With the ability to run off a power bank or any device with a USB port, this heated blanket offers unparalleled versatility.

It takes a relatively long time (up to 15 minutes) to reach maximum temperature.

With an included 5-volt power bank and the ability to charge via the USB port on your laptop, car dashboard, or wall adaptor, the Ourea USB Heated Blanket raises the bar in terms of portability. It’s just as suitable for outdoor use as it is for lounging inside, too, with a DWR-coated polyester taffeta outer layer that’s both wind and water resistant. Want to keep your hands free? Use the magnetic buckle to convert the blanket into a cape. Need to secure it in high winds? Handy corner loops enable you to stake it to the ground.

The blanket offers four heating zones and three heat settings, with a maximum temperature of 149 degrees. It’s also eminently packable, with a zippered pocket for securing the power bank and any charging cables. You can fold the blanket into this pocket for easy storage and transport, too, and even use it as a pillow on your next road trip or long-haul flight. Choose yours in gray or green; both are machine washable and dryer friendly.

The Details: 60 x 50 inches | Polyester taffeta, fleece | Max temperature: 149 degrees | 3 temperature settings | USB powered

Best for Camping

Dalos outdoor heating blanket.

With a weather-resistant nylon shell and non-fuzzy fabric that repels dirt and other debris, this blanket is made for outdoor living.

The maximum temperature isn’t specified in the product description, so you shouldn't rely on it for extreme cold.

Portability and durability are priorities when choosing a heated blanket for your next camping trip , and this one from Dalos Dream delivers on both fronts. It’s battery powered, providing up to six hours of cordless heat. And, with a USB charger that can easily be plugged into a power bank or car dashboard, it’s easy to recharge on the go. You can even use it to juice up your phone if you’re stranded without power in the wilderness.

The 20-denier ripstop nylon shell is built to withstand the hardships of life outdoors. It also features a durable water repellent finish that makes the blanket virtually impervious to wind and rain. And although the material isn’t as cozy as that of a traditional heated blanket, the fact that it’s less fuzzy means it won’t attract every piece of leaf litter in the campground. The blanket offers five temperature settings and five shutdown timer settings and can be folded compactly into an integrated pocket.

The Details: 60 x 40 inches | Ripstop nylon, polyester | 5 temperature settings | Battery powered | Up to six-hour runtime

Best for Cars

Magiona machine washable heated car blanket.

This car-charger-compatible blanket is ideally sized for use in the car, with an extra-long cable that reaches to the back seat.

It takes quite a while to fully warm up.

If you’re traveling by car this winter and worried about keeping warm en route, the Magiona Heated Car Blanket could be your new best friend. The top layer is made of thick flannel, while the lining is cozy Sherpa fleece. It’s purpose-built for car rides, too, with just enough coverage to ensure your lap and legs stay warm without dragging too much on the floor. It’s powered via a 12-volt charger that plugs into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter.

The charger features a 6-foot long cable so that the blanket can stretch comfortably to the back seat. Worried about the kids spilling their snacks and drinks on it? Don’t be. As long as you remove the charging cable, the blanket is fully machine washable and dryer safe. It offers three heat settings from 82 to 126 degrees and takes roughly 10 minutes to heat up. If you want to maximize its usage, you can even purchase a separate AC/DC converter and plug it in at home.

The Details: 55 x 40 inches | Flannel, Sherpa fleece | Max temperature: 126 degrees | 3 temperature settings | Car charger powered

Most Packable

Actionheat 7v battery heated throw blanket.

Dick's Sporting Goods

This blanket combines touch-controlled heating with the ability to pack away into a compact carry case.

The slimline battery is not the most powerful on this list, offering just 4.5 hours of heat on the lowest setting.

When packing a suitcase for your winter vacation, space is at a premium. Make the most of yours with the ActionHeat 7V Heated Throw Blanket, which uses proprietary ActionFlex fabric to deliver just the right blend of performance and lightweight packability. This is the smallest blanket on our list at 55 x 31.5 inches. But while it won’t provide full-body coverage, it does offer plenty of warmth when wrapped around the shoulders or draped over the knees.

It uses a 7-volt battery to power three heating zones. Use the touch-button controls to select one of three temperature settings from 102 to 135 degrees, with the lowest offering up to 4.5 hours of battery life. You’ll know when your battery is due for a recharge thanks to the blanket’s LED power level indicators. When not in use, the blanket folds and rolls into a compact, cylindrical carry case that’s just the right shape for slotting into your suitcase or backpack. It’s machine washable and available in practical black or gray.

The Details: 55 x 31.5 inches | ActionFlex fabric, synthetic fill insulation | Max temperature: 135 degrees | 3 temperature settings | Battery powered | Up to 4.5 hours runtime

Softest Feel

Pure enrichment luxury heated throw.

This blanket combines high-end faux fur with Sherpa fleece to provide unbelievable softness at a surprisingly reasonable price point.

You’ll need access to mains power to use this blanket on your travels.

The PureRadiance Heated Throw Blanket from Pure Enrichment is a designer product with an ultra-soft faux fur top layer, a Sherpa fleece lining, and embossed stitching. Yet despite its luxury ski chalet aesthetic, it’s not the most expensive option on this list by a long shot. It requires mains power, but it’s neither too heavy nor too large to realistically pack in your checked luggage. It even comes with a premium storage bag to keep it looking brand new for longer.

It heats up quickly and offers six heat settings from 90 to 105 degrees. Shifting between them is easy using the blanket’s palm-sized, detachable LED controller. A two-hour automatic shut-off feature helps to prevent overheating and conserve energy so that you can drift off without a care in the world when relaxing fireside after a long day on the slopes. Finally, the blanket is machine washable and protected by a five-year warranty.

The Details: 60 x 50 inches |  Faux fur, Sherpa fleece | Max temperature: 105 degrees | 6 temperature settings | Mains powered

Tips for Buying a Portable Heated Blanket

Choose the right power source.

How and where you plan on traveling and your preferred activities will dictate which kind of power source you should choose. If you’ll be using your heated blanket to stay warm on chilly nights in your vacation rental or hotel room and will always have access to mains power, then a model with a wall plug makes the most sense. Just choose one with a generous cable and make sure you have the correct travel adapters and/or converters if you’re headed overseas.

If you want to use your heated blanket outside (to stay warm in the tailgating lot or on a camping trip), a battery-operated model is a better choice. Look for one with a decent battery life, an LED battery level indicator, and the ability to recharge via your car’s cigarette lighter or USB port. Detachable batteries are ideal, because this feature allows you to connect a backup battery if you’re out for an extended period of time without the ability to recharge.

Make sure the size is travel-friendly

Many heated blankets work beautifully in your own home but are too large or bulky to be a practical travel companion. To save precious suitcase space, either look for models that are specifically labeled as portable and designed for lightweight compactness or opt for a throw-sized version of a standard blanket. A drawstring carry bag or one with cinchable straps also helps to keep your blanket compact. Of course, size will be less of a concern if you’re driving to your destination than if you’re trying to remain within an airline luggage allowance.

Consider temperature, heat distribution, and settings

Different heated blanket models vary in terms of minimum and maximum temperature. Make sure to check the manufacturer’s description carefully to confirm that whichever one you buy is sufficient for your intended purpose. The ability to choose from a range of heat settings is a valuable feature that increases the blanket’s versatility.

We also love the ability to choose from a range of time periods after which the blanket automatically shuts off. This helps to prevent overheating and also avoids excess energy consumption. Finally, consider how many heating zones your blanket has and how well they distribute warmth across its full length and breadth to keep your extremities toasty.

Although you should always check the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific blanket, most modern heated blankets are now machine washable. Make sure to detach the controller and any cords and to remove the battery if your blanket is battery powered. Then, use mild detergent to wash the blanket on a delicate cycle that uses cool or warm water. Shorter cycles are best, since they limit the amount of water and heat the blanket is exposed to. Some models are tumble-dryer safe on a cool setting, while others will need to be line dried.

Heated blankets that are 10 years old or more are responsible for the vast majority of electric blanket fires. Newer models should turn off automatically if they reach an unsafe temperature, or if any faulty components are detected. Check that yours has been tested and certified by a recognized agency such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL). If it has, it’s very unlikely to cause burns or start a fire.

Nevertheless, those with specific health concerns, including diabetes and poor circulation, should consult their doctor before using a heated blanket. Never use a heated blanket that has visible signs of wear and tear.

It’s generally advised not to leave a heated blanket on all night. Even if the likelihood of the blanket overheating to the extent that it causes a fire or burns is tiny if you’re using a newer model, there’s every chance that you could get too hot — affecting your comfort and quality of sleep. Instead, use the blanket to preheat the bed before you get in and then turn it off before you go to sleep, or use a blanket with a timer and set it to shut off automatically after an hour or two. This also helps to save battery life if you’re using a battery-powered model.

Although rules may vary from one airline to the next, TSA’s official verdict is that heated blankets are permitted in both your checked and your carry-on luggage. As for whether or not you can use your heated blanket on the plane, that depends on how it’s operated and the policy of the airline you’re flying with. In 2021, for example, American Airlines banned the use of heated blankets onboard because they said that they posed a fire risk when plugged into the airplane power source. It was not clarified whether the ruling applied to battery-powered blankets. If in doubt, call ahead and ask.

Keep Yourself Warm When RV/Tent Camping With A Portable Electric Heated Blanket

Camping has always been a big part of my life.

My earliest memory of RV camping is when I went on a trip with my grandparents. Back then, I only went camping during the summer when it was warm.

Now I travel full time in my travel trailer and have to deal with cold winter nights in the camper.

I bought a portable heated blanket that can keep both my wife and me warm in the camper when it’s cold.

Today I am going to share the knowledge I gained about heated blankets because I did a lot of research and figured I could help other campers out there as well.

I’m also going to share how you can power a heated blanket with a solar charged power station .

If you already have a portable battery, make sure it has a pure sine wave inverter before plugging in your blanket.

If you have questions, please leave a comment and I will do my best to help you out, now let’s get cozy with a heated blanket.

Best Portable Heated Blankets Review

1. stalwart 12v electric car blanket.

Check Price at Amazon

A popular little 12V heated blanket is this one by Stalwart. It’s a fleece throw travel blanket that comes in a couple of different colors.

They’re all the same size, 59 by 43 inches, so it’s not a massive blanket but will still be large enough for a medium-sized adult.

Since it’s a 12V electric blanket, it has a cigarette plug on the end, which makes it easy to use in a car, van, or RV.

It only uses up to 50W, so it won’t be a problem for the alternator.

The power cord is 96 inches long.

The low wattage also makes it compatible with a lot of small portable power stations. It also doesn’t require an inverter since it uses 12 volt power.

That means you can power it using a small power station or directly from a 12 volt battery using a cigarette lighter socket with alligator clamps (click to view on Amazon) .

Many RVs already have a cigarette lighter socket directly connected to the battery. So you can use it when you’re boondocking/dry camping.

While the Stalwart blanket only has one heating setting, the one setting it has is very warm, so it will keep you comfortable when it’s cold inside your RV camper or tent.

The Stalwart is not machine washable, and should only be spot cleaned.

Overall, the Stalwart 12V Electric Car Blanket is an affordable heated blanket that doesn’t have any frills. It will heat and stay warm until you unplug it.

It doesn’t have any heat settings or an automatic turnoff. The power cord is long with a 12V cigarette plug at the end.

The 12 volt power makes it one of the more versatile electric travel blankets in this review.

  • Uses 12 Volt Power
  • 12V Cigarette Plug
  • Can Be Powered By Any 12V Outlet
  • 8 Foot Power Cord
  • Only 50W Power Usage
  • Only 1 Setting
  • Not Machine Washable
  • Only 1 Size Option
  • No Auto Shut Off

2. The Cozee Battery Operated Heated Blanket

If you want a truly portable heated blanket for camping that is battery powered, the Cozee is one of the few options that actually uses its own battery.

This heated blanket comes with a 96.2 watt-hour lithium battery that powers not only the blanket, but two USB ports as well so you can keep electronics charged.

Being 96Wh means you can bring it on an airplane (TSA’s limit is 100Wh) which makes it perfect for travelers.

So how long does the battery last? About five hours.

It can be charged either with the AC wall plug or the included 12V car charger.

It will also stay on longer than five hours if you leave it plugged in.

The blanket measures 60 by 60 inches, so it’s large enough to keep an adult warm and cozy, while also being small enough to be portable.

Perfect for the colder evening and nights out by the campfire.

Cozee offers a 1-year warranty and advertises that you can remove the battery and wash the blanket in a machine.

It is water-resistant so you can feel safe taking it outdoors. Just like most other blankets above, there is a safety shutoff.

So is the the Cozee the portable heated blanket for you?

Well, it’s the most portable heated blanket in this review.

It also comes with some good extra features, like USB ports, a 96.2Wh lithium battery, and a cozy micro-fleece interior.

It’s great not only for camping but for those outdoor sporting events on a cold fall evening, or wherever you find yourself freezing and wishing for a battery-powered blanket.

  • Wall, car charger included
  • 3 heat settings
  • Auto shutoff
  • Battery-powered (96.2Wh lithium battery)
  • USB ports on the battery
  • Cozy micro-fleece interior
  • Truly Portable
  • Doesn’t Get Super Warm

3. ThermaFur Air Activated Heat Blanket

The ThermaFur has a much different take on the portable heated blanket idea.

When you think “heated blanket” the first thing that normally comes to mind is something that uses electricity.

And making an electric blanket portable for camping and travel normally means having a small battery you can charge it with, or at least a 12 volt plug.

The ThermaFur portable heated blanket uses none of these ideas.

Instead, it uses a heat source that requires no electricity at all, air activated hand warmers.

The blanket part is very simple. It’s made of 100% fleece with a hemmed border.

There are 8 pockets sewn throughout the blanket.

The pockets are around 5 inches long and 3.5 inches wide. The perfect size for the larger hand warmers, also called body warmers.

Each pocket has a flap that will hold the inserted hand/body warmers securely so you can use the blanket without worrying about them falling out.

If you want to adjust the temperature, add or remove hand warmers.

It’s an incredibly simple design, but for camping and portability, it’s a fantastic idea.

Many of the portable heated blankets on the market today that use a small included battery to power them don’t really get very warm.

Especially when you compare them to the AC powered heated travel blankets reviewed below.

Small portable batteries just don’t output as much power, and heaters require a decent amount of electricity to work well.

That’s why we recommend using a portable power bank with AC outlets if possible.

Regular electric blankets work better and longer than battery powered options.

But if you don’t have the space for a portable power station, and you want a heated blanket that’s truly portable, the ThermaFur Air Activated Heat Blanket is one of the best options out there today.

There are 8 body warmers included with purchase, so you can start using it right when you get it.

Large body warmers last for around 15 hours, which is plenty to get you through a chilly day or night of camping.

When the warmers run out of charge, throw them away and put new ones in.

The top recommended replacements are Body Super Warmers by Hot Hands (click to view on Amazon) .

There’s even a way to still technically make this a battery powered heated blanket if you use rechargeable hand warmers like these (click to view on Amazon) .

  • No Power or Batteries Required
  • Lightweight
  • Can Adjust Heat By Adding or Removing Warmers
  • Thin Blanket Material
  • Included Hand Warmers Not Reusable

4. Serta Reversible Sherpa/Fleece Heated Blanket

This reversible heated blanket by Serta is a popular option because it’s so soft.

The brushed micro plush reverses to a plush sherpa lining, so you can stay cozy with either side.

It has five heat settings, so depending on how cold or warm you are, your blanket will adjust and let you feel just the perfect amount of warmth.

You can choose between six different colors, but there are no size options. All of them are 50 by 60 inches, and large enough for an adult.

This is not a 12V powered blanket with a cigarette plug, but with a regular AC plug.

The power cord is 8.5 ft long, so you don’t have to sit right by the outlet to keep this blanket warm.

Something I really like about this Serta blanket is the fact that it’s machine washable and comes with a three-year warranty.

I like to wash my blankets pretty often since it gets dirty so easily in the camper, and nothing cleans a blanket like a washing machine.

Serta has put a 4-hour automatic shut off feature in the blanket for safety and power savings reasons.

With an automatic shut off like this, you never have to worry about leaving your home or RV and realizing that you didn’t turn off the heated blanket.

Overall, I recommend the Serta reversible heated blanket because of the high-quality materials and features.

Serta stands behind its product with the 3-year warranty, and that’s something that can’t be said about every heated blanket out there.

The size is perfect for a camper and it’s small enough to be used outdoors, on the couch, and on the bed.

Since it only uses around 100 watts, you can easily combine it with a small portable power station , and it becomes a heated blanket you can use anywhere.

  • Reversible Sherpa/Fleece
  • 5 Heat Settings
  • 3-year Warranty
  • Machine Washable
  • 8.5 ft Power Cord
  • Automatic Shut Off
  • Uses AC Power (Need Inverter for Battery)

5. Vremi Electric Heated Blanket

If you want a heated blanket with even more features than the Serta, this one from Vremi might impress you.

There are two size options; 50 by 60 inches and 62 by 84 inches.

It doesn’t come in any other colors, but let me tell you what it can do.

It has an LCD display so you can easily monitor what settings the blanket is set to, and four buttons that let you control it.

Six heat settings and eight timer settings make it a versatile choice for a lot of different situations and places.

The heat settings can heat the blanket up from 85 to 110 degrees.

The timer settings will let you choose when the blanket should turn off, or it will turn itself off after 10 hours.

It has a 10-foot power cord that can be removed when it’s time to wash it because it is machine washable.

The Vremi blanket uses up to 100 watts, which is not bad for the amount of heat it can generate.

It makes it compatible with a lot of portable power stations as long as it has a pure sine wave inverter.

Vremi offers a 1-year warranty.

If you’re looking for a lot of features, the Vremi electric heated blanket is a strong contender for the ultimate heated camping blanket title.

It’s easy to control with the remote, has a lot of heat and timer settings, and will turn itself off after 10 hours for safety reasons.

The downside is the short 1-year warranty.

  • LCD Display
  • 6 Heat Settings
  • 10 ft Power Cord
  • 2 Size Options

6. Electrowarmth M60Fd Heated Mattress Pad

If you would rather have a heated mattress pad in your RV camper than a heated blanket, the Electrowarmth M60Fd is the one.

It comes in several sizes, but the one I am reviewing is the short queen with dual control.

Most campers come with short queen beds (also called camper queens). You can choose the size depending on what mattress is in your RV.

What’s impressive about this product is the low watt usage.

It only uses 126 Watts at most, with both sides turned on the highest heat setting.

See Also:  Best Portable Quiet Inverter Generators For RV Camping

Each controller has ten heat levels, and for safety, they both turn off after 10 hours of use.

The controller lets you turn it on and off, and up/down the heating levels.

Electrowarmth offers a 1-year warranty with this mattress pad. You can both machine wash and dry the pad.

The  Electrowarmth M60Fd is a fantastic option for alternative ways to stay warm while camping.

I can see myself having it permanently in my trailer. The mattress is always cold because of the air coming in through the outer storage compartment underneath.

Because of the ease of use and low wattage, it’s almost a better option than a heated travel blanket if you are looking for something to keep your bed warm when camping.

I don’t like the look of the outdated controllers, but the functionality of a great heated camping mattress pad is there, which is why I still recommend it.

  • 100% Polyester
  • Low Wattage
  • Multiple Sizes
  • ETL Certification
  • 10 Heat Levels
  • 10 Hour Auto-Off
  • Machine-Washable
  • Not As Portable As A Blanket
  • Uses AC Power (Need Inverter for Battery

Conclusion & Heated Blanket Recommendations

After looking at four heated blankets and one heating pad, I’ve realized that this is a product category where it comes down to preference.

Do you want to choose between ten heat levels, or is it more important that you can program when the blanket should turn off automatically?

Do you need a blanket that covers the entire bed, just your side, or just your feet?

No matter what your answer is to these questions, I hope that you’ve found what you’re looking for by now.

Here are my recommendations for heated blankets and pads:

Best Battery Powered Option – The Cozee Battery Operated Heated Blanket

It’s hard to heat something as large as a blanket using just a small portable battery.

The Cozee battery powered heated blanket is one of the only battery powered option out there.

While it’s not going to be as effective as the kind of electric blankets you plug in at home, it will still be warmer than a regular blanket.

Best Heated Travel Blanket – Stalwart 12V Electric Car Blanket

Every vehicle has a 12 volt outlet that can power this small heated blanket.

You can take it on any road trip to stay warm and since most RVs have a 12 volt outlet that’s directly connected to the battery, you can use it while camping as well.

If you don’t have a car or RV, you can power it using a small portable power station since it only uses 50 watts and you don’t need an inverter to power it.

Best Battery Powered Heated Blanket – The Cozee Battery Operated Heated Blanket

The Cozee is the most portable heated blanket out there since it runs on a battery.

Its battery is large but small enough that you can bring it on an airplane.

If you want to use your blanket outdoors a lot, the Cozee is the best choice.

Portable Power Stations To Use With Electric Heated Blankets

Solar powered generators are becoming more and more popular because they let you use electricity and recharge no matter where you are.

They’re basically portable lithium batteries that you can plug solar panels into to recharge them.

When powering a heated blanket with one of these power stations, you need to make sure it has a pure Sine Wave Inverter. Not a Modified Sine Wave Inverter.

This is really important to pay attention to since a modified sine wave inverter might destroy both your blanket and the power station.

Again, make sure the power station you buy has a Pure Sine Wave Inverter , and if you’re not sure you should ask the manufacturer.

Here are four power stations that I recommend: (click on any of the links to see them on Amazon)

Jackery Explorer 240

Jackery makes power stations in all different sizes. This one has a battery capacity of 240 watt-hours, so it will run a 60W blanket for 3-4 hours.

It has a screen that shows you how many watts are going in and out, and you can recharge it with a solar panel like the Powoxi 60W .

Ecoflow River Pro

One of the more feature-packed power stations out there right now.

It has three AC outlets, a screen that tells you everything you need to know, USB C, 720Wh battery capacity, and a regulated 12V output.

And it can be controlled and monitored with your phone.

Jackery Explorer 500

Very similar to the Explorer 240 above, but with more battery capacity and ports.

Jackery Explorer 1000

The largest power station Jackery makes. With a 1002 watt-hour battery capacity, three AC ports, USB C, and two inputs.

These power stations advertise their battery capacity in watt hours.

A heated blanket that draws 100W is going to use around 100 watt-hours per hour, so if you know the blanket wattage and the power station battery capacity, you can calculate how long it will run.

They don’t include solar panels, but most include an AC wall charger and a car charger.

To charge them with solar panels, you need to make sure it has a compatible connector.

Also get a solar panel that doesn’t have a solar charge controller, since power stations already have charge controllers built-in.

I can help you find compatible solar panels and tell you how to connect them if you leave a comment and tell me which power station you have.

What to Look for in a Portable Heated Blanket for Camping

Power usage.

Whether you are powering a portable heated blanket with a 12 volt RV battery, car battery, portable power station, or even a battery that was included with the blanket, power usage matters.

The amount of watts a heated blanket uses every hour tells you how long the power source will last.

If you are going to be using a portable power station, you need to make sure the max watts the blanket will use aren’t too much for the inverter to handle.

Luckily, none of the portable heated blankets in this review use over 150 watts.

That’s pretty low and most power stations and solar generators that have inverters can handle it.

If you are using a heated travel blanket that can be powered with a 12 volt outlet, you need to make sure you don’t use it too much when the vehicle isn’t running.

Car batteries don’t have as much storage for electricity as large RV batteries and you could end up with a dead battery if you leave your heated blanket plugged in for too long.

Portability

Truly portable heated blankets that actually work can be pretty hard to find.

Heating elements require a decent power source to work properly, and super small portable batteries that can fit in your pocket don’t always have the strength to really heat a blanket.

That doesn’t mean a battery powered heated blanket won’t work. Just don’t expect it to be as warm as the kind you can plug into an outlet.

We are using the term “portability” in a few different ways in this review.

Portability can mean being able to use a common 12 volt power source, a small battery, portable hand warmers, or portable power stations.

Some of the heated blankets in this review are more portable than others.

Your travel and camping style is the thing that will decide how portable the blanket needs to be.

Blanket Fabric & Quality

Naturally, a blanket that’s made with extra warm fabrics and materials will feel warmer than one that is thin and lightweight.

The travel heated blankets in this review are made of thinner material because they are meant to take up less space.

The ones that can be powered using portable power stations are a little thicker and made with heavier fabrics.

The heated mattress pad is the largest and least portable option.

Some of these options are going to be better when paired with other camping blankets.

For instance, the 12 volt option is pretty thin, but it will fit perfectly inside a sleeping bag or under a quilt in an RV.

Size Options

It’s common for heated blankets to only have one size option.

If you want a portable blanket, you can wrap around your shoulders and take with you anywhere, a small 48 x 60 inch size will be perfect.

If you want the heated blanket to cover the bed in the RV or van, you might need something that’s full or queen sized.

Safety Features

Finally, safety is a big deal with any electronic, especially the kinds that output heat right next to your body.

The most common safety feature on heated blankets is an auto-off.

It turns off the blanket after a set number of hours, just in case you left it on unattended or to stop your body from getting too warm.

The 12 volt blanket is the only option in this review that doesn’t have an auto-off.

That means if left plugged in it could easily drain the battery you are powering it with.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heated Blankets

Why should i get a heated blanket instead of running the furnace.

To save propane and energy. It takes some electricity to run the fan in your furnace.

I believe it’s smarter to heat the space you’re in instead of heating the whole house or trailer.

Are heated blankets safe?

As with all electronics, especially ones in the heating category, you should be very careful and follow the recommended guidelines.

If your blanket has cracked or is worn, throw it away.

Even if your 10-year-old blanket hasn’t broken, you should throw it away as old blankets account for 99 percent of all heated blanket fires .

I recommend buying an electric blanket that has been UL certified, which shows that the product has been tested for safety.

The most important thing to do when you’ve got a heated blanket is never to leave it on when you’re not there.

What are the benefits of using a heated blanket in a residential home?

If you can stay warm by turning on a heated blanket instead of heating the entire house, you’ll quickly start saving money.

Heating bills are high in the winter and can be reduced by heating the house less, dressing warmer, or using a heater blanket.

I have the jackets 500 power source. As suggested by this company I can use a 40 Watt electric blanket but I’m not finding one with such low wattage.. do you know of any and where I might find it. Only need a twin size for my camping cot. Thank you.

Yeah, the only ones I know of that use that little electricity are the 12V ones. Like this one from Elantrip . This only works if your power station has a 12V plug though.

I realize this might sound silly but the jackery 1000 says it is rated for 110 volts. If I wanted the Vremi blanket – it says it’s rated 120 volts. Will that be an issue?

Hi, Nope, won’t be an issue at all. As long as the blanket has a regular plug you’re good to go. If it was a 12V blanket though, it would have to be plugged into the 12V outlet.

Hello I have a 4000 watt solar system and I have three batteries to charge on it with a 500 watt growatt inverter. I would like recommendations for a battery operated electric blanket that the rechargeable batters on a USB port. I had the system built for off grid living. Please help with recommendations I have a queen in my RV it’s a Class A.

This battery powered heated blanket by Onnetila (click to view on Amazon) is the only option I could find that uses a battery that can be recharged using a USB port.

It’s throw blanket sized, but I think you will have a hard time finding a queen size blanket that’s battery powered since portable batteries aren’t powerful enough to heat a large blanket.

The Cozee heated blanket in this review has a battery that can be recharged with a 12 volt outlet. It’s not USB but it can be charged with a 12 volt battery without having to use an inverter.

However this does mean that your legs are not gonna be covered. The blanket comes with three heat settings: high (131℉), medium (122℉), and low (113℉). With the included external portable charger (7.4V 3A 5000mAh), you can quickly heat up the hoodie in seconds, and it offers a long-lasting operation time of up to 7-8 hours on low heat. How To Choose A USB Heated Blanket?

There are some key factors to consider when purchasing a USB heated blanket:

Power Source Compatibility: These electric heated blankets are designed to be powered by USB ports, making them compatible with various devices such as laptops, power banks, and car chargers. Ensure that the blanket is compatible with the USB power sources you have or plan to use.

Heating Settings and Controls: Look for blankets that offer adjustable settings, allowing you to customize the warmth according to your preferences. Some blankets may have multiple temperature levels or even timers for automatic shut-off. Check for user-friendly controls that are easy to operate.

Size and Portability: Consider the size of the blanket to ensure it fits your needs. Whether you prefer a blanket for personal use or one that covers a larger area, choose a size that suits your preferences. Additionally, opt for a blanket that is lightweight and easy to fold or roll up, making it convenient to carry and store.

Material and Comfort: Pay attention to the material of the blanket, as it directly affects comfort and durability. Look for soft, cozy fabrics that provide warmth without irritation. Popular options include fleece, plush, or microfiber materials.

Maintenance and Cleaning: Consider the ease of maintenance and cleaning. Check if the blanket is machine washable or if it requires specific care instructions. Removable and washable covers or liners can make cleaning and maintenance hassle-free.

What is a USB heated blanket?

A USB heated blanket is a type of electric blanket that generates heat through a USB port. It is a portable option that can be powered using a computer or power bank that has a USB port.

How does a USB heated blanket work?

What are the heat settings for USB heated blankets?

Do USB heated blankets have an auto shut-off feature?

Can I use a USB heated blanket on the go?

Table of Contents

Buying guide for best heated travel blankets.

If you spend time in your car in the winter, you know that road trips and long commutes can be chilly, drafty affairs, even with the heat cranked. A heated travel blanket can help alleviate some of the colder aspects of winter driving, and it does so at a fraction of the cost of heated seats. Heated travel blankets are also a great way to let passengers choose their own comfort level. They’re a lifesaver if you find yourself stranded on a remote winter road waiting for help to arrive.

Before you choose the right one for you, consider factors such as construction materials and how these blankets are powered, in addition to features such as timers, temperature controls, and safety elements like auto shut-off.

usb heated travel blanket

Key considerations

Construction material.

Fleece is the standard construction material for heated travel blankets, although the type of fleece can vary considerably. Thick polar fleece and water-resistant polyester fleece are the two common types of fleece used, and both offer soft and comfortable surfaces that can help to keep you warm even when the blanket is not plugged in.

Whatever type of fleece you settle on, the material — and the electronic elements inside it — should be rugged enough to hold up to constant road travel.

Power source

Since they are designed largely for automotive travel, heated travel blankets are almost universally powered via a cord that plugs into your car or truck’s 12V (or cigarette lighter) socket. These used to be standard in nearly all vehicles and still largely are, but some car manufacturers no longer include them in select vehicle models. Be sure that your car has a standard 12V socket before getting one of these blankets.

Battery use

Overall, heated travel blankets don’t draw a sizable amount of power from your battery , but some manufacturers specifically note that their blankets are low-amperage. This shouldn’t be a huge issue when the car is running, but if you plan to use a heated travel blanket with the vehicle off, be sure that it draws minimal amperage so you won’t be draining your battery every time you use it.

Temperature

Heated travel blankets usually only become warm, not hot, so you shouldn’t have any issues with them becoming too hot. Some blankets have actually been criticized for not becoming warm enough, which kind of undercuts the whole point of paying up for a powered blanket. Make sure there aren’t any problems with your heated travel blanket under-heating.

The size of the heated travel blanket that you choose is important: too small and the blanket can’t wrap around you and keep you warm, too large and it may feel like it’s taking over the interior of your car. The majority of heated travel blankets are just under 60 inches long, with a width that varies between 30 and 45 inches. Note the size carefully and test out a similarly-sized blanket from your house to verify that such a size will work for you.

A general rule of thumb is to go larger if the blanket is for adults and smaller if it’s for children or pets.

Cord length

The length of the cord that runs from the heated travel blanket to the 12V socket can vary from blanket to blanket and is usually from five to eight feet in length. Get the blanket with the longest cord you can find — with a longer cord, the blanket can be used by anyone in the vehicle, regardless of where they’re sitting.

Temperature settings

Unlike electric blankets for your bed, the ability to select your own temperature with a heated travel blanket is not standard. Some heated travel blankets have a variable settings option, however. This is usually in the form of a switch where you can opt for “high” or “low” temperatures. Rarer still are heated travel blankets with a variable knob you can use to set the temperature across a range of temperatures.

Indicator light

Another non-standard feature you may run across is an LED indicator light. This shows you at a glance when the blanket is running (light on) and when it is not (light off).

Auto shut-off

While you won’t find many safety features in heated travel blankets, one that some blankets incorporate is an auto shut-off feature. This automatically shuts the blanket down when it becomes too hot.

Some heated travel blankets offer a timer feature, which allows you to select when the blanket shuts off, so you don’t have to remember to do it yourself. These timers are usually limited to two or three intervals, ranging from a half-hour to an hour and a half.

Select a heated travel blanket you find attractive. Heated travel blankets are manufactured in a variety of solid colors and patterns, with plaid being quite common. If you want more options in terms of style, choose a blanket that offers a variety of colors and patterns to choose from.

Heated travel blanket prices

Heated travel blankets start out at under $20 and can reach up to around $40.

Inexpensive: The majority of heated travel blankets are in the $25 to $30 range. At $20, you can find simple blankets with little in the way of controls — you plug them in, they work.

Expensive: At higher prices, blanket quality increases, both in terms of the fleece and the inner electronics. Here you can find larger blankets with longer cords and additional features such as temperature controls, auto shut-off features, and timers.

  • When looking for a heated travel blanket, try to avoid ones with too much white in it, as you may have a harder time keeping it looking clean on the road .
  • If you hang your electric blanket to dry over a clothesline, don’t use clothespins to secure it, as this can damage the internal wiring of the blanket.
  • So long as your car’s 12V cigarette lighter works when the car is off, so will your heated travel blanket. 12V adapters on some vehicles are not wired directly to the battery, so they cannot power a blanket when the car is off.
  • While it can take a car up to 10 minutes or more to produce enough heat to warm the vehicle’s interior, the majority of heated travel blankets are warm within a minute or two.
  • For ease of storage, seek out a heated travel blanket that ships with a zippered carry bag.
  • If you need more than one heated travel blanket, search for one that ships in packs containing multiple blankets. This is a great way to save a few dollars instead.
  • If you find yourself a 12V socket short when trying to run your heated travel blanket and other car accessories, consider picking up a 12V splitter.

Q. What is polar fleece? A. Heated travel blankets are usually constructed from fleece, a knit fabric that features one side that has been brushed out for a softer feel. Fleece is available in a variety of different types, and one popular type is polar fleece. Used largely in winter jackets and blankets, polar fleece is thicker than regular fleece, making it warmer for cold weather use. Q. How should heated travel blankets be cleaned? A. You would think with the wiring inside that you would not be able to machine wash a heated travel blanket, but this is not necessarily the case. Some manufacturers recommend that you wash your heated travel blanket by hand, while others claim that you can use a machine to wash their blankets if you take the proper care.

If a heated travel blanket can be machine washed, you should first remove any cords or controllers, then soak the blanket in cold, soapy water for 15 minutes to loosen any dirt. After soaking, run the blanket through your machine using cold water on the delicate or gentle cycle and let it spin at the end.

To dry the blanket, tumble dry it on low, or stretch it out over a clothesline or frame to air-dry it. The heated travel blanket should be completely dry before you plug it in and attempt to use it.
