Victoria Tunnel Tours (advance booking essential)

The Victoria Tunnel is a subterranean wagonway that runs under Newcastle upon Tyne, England, from the Town Moor down to the River Tyne. It was built between 1839 and 1842 to transport coal from Leazes Main Colliery in Spital Tongues, to riverside staithes, ready for loading onto boats for export.

Newcastle upon Tyne is a city steeped in history and culture, and one of its most unique attractions is the Victoria Tunnel Tours heritage museum. This fascinating site offers visitors the chance to explore a subterranean tunnel that was once used to transport coal beneath the city. The Victoria Tunnel was constructed in the early 19th century and was originally used to transport coal from the mines in the west of the city to the River Tyne, where it could be loaded onto ships and transported around the world. However, during World War II, the tunnel was repurposed as an air-raid shelter, providing a safe haven for Newcastle's residents during the frequent bombing raids that targeted the city. Today, the Victoria Tunnel is open to the public, offering a unique glimpse into the city's industrial past and its experiences during wartime. Guided tours take visitors through the tunnel, which is around two miles long and runs beneath some of Newcastle's most historic streets. Along the way, visitors will learn about the history of the tunnel and its many uses, from coal transportation to air-raid shelter. One of the most fascinating parts of the Victoria Tunnel Tours is the recreated air-raid shelter, which gives visitors an idea of what life was like for those who sought refuge in the tunnel during the war. The shelter has been painstakingly recreated to look just as it would have done during the war, complete with bunk beds and other period features. Another highlight of the tour is the chance to see some of the original mining equipment that would have been used in the tunnel's early days. Visitors can get up close and personal with these historic machines, which give a real sense of the scale and complexity of the mining operations that once took place beneath the city. Advance booking is essential for the Victoria Tunnel Tours, as the site is very popular and places are limited. However, this only adds to the sense of exclusivity and excitement around the tour, and visitors can be sure of a truly unique and memorable experience. Overall, the Victoria Tunnel Tours heritage museum is a must-visit attraction for anyone with an interest in history or industry. It offers a fascinating insight into Newcastle's past, and is a great way to learn more about the city and its people. So if you're planning a trip to Newcastle, be sure to book your place on the Victoria Tunnel Tours and discover this hidden gem for yourself.

A really interesting couple of hours, which passed quickly, with 3 excellent volunteer guides. Would recommend.

A very interesting place to visit. Both guides Pete and Jen were full of knowledge and made the whole experience well worth the money

The guides Gerard and Phil made the Victoria Tunnel such a fun and highly informative experience. Such an interesting and important part of local history and there were plenty of anecdotes to keep everyone amused throughout. Would highly recommend.

We did the hour tour and it was fascinating. The tunnel is over 170 years old and in very good condition. The first part of the tour focused on World war 2 and the second part on the Victorian era including the building of the tunnel. Both guides were very knowledgeable and I would be keen to go back for the 2 hour tour.

Booked a one hour tour of the Victorian Tunnels. Wasnt exactly sure what to expect, but I did guess that it would be dark, narrow and slightly claustrophobic. The volunteer guide went by the name of Pete and what a fun guy he was. In truth I wasnt expecting a lot of the tour because, well its a tunnel. The tour felt like it only lasted 5 minutes because Pete gave such a great narrative of the history of the tunnels and the many stories great stories to tell about things that happened in the tunnels throughout its life. The stories and history warns't just confined to the tunnels who. There stuff about life for the people of Newcastle during the times of the tunnels. The coal miners, the people who worked o the tunnels and the less affluent times.Best of all, the lights went out in the tunnels as part of the tour and it made me really appreciate just what a wonderful modern we live in outside of the tunnels.
