Yes, We Go To Vegas.

Believe it or not, one of the most common questions we get is whether or not we have buses that travel to fabulous Las Vegas . Not only do we indeed go to Vegas, we go multiple times a day, especially if you reside in the St. George or southern Utah region. We can pick up and drop off directly at Harry Reid International Airport right near the famous Las Vegas strip! We understand that sometimes the name of our company might confuse some thinking that we only travel around Salt Lake, but we go much further.

As we move toward life as we once knew it, rest assured that we won't abandon all of the good things that came out of these past couple of years. Our buses will continue to be cleaner than ever and our service will be as flexible as we can make. Now, who's ready for some fun in the sun in Vegas, baby!

Executive Service. Always.

At Salt Lake Express, your comfort never takes a backseat. We’ve worked hard to outfit every vehicle in our fleet with executive class service and amenities.

Cottonwood connect ski shuttle returns for 2023-24 season.

December 26 2023

Salt Lake City (November 30, 2023) — After a successful inaugural season, the Cottonwood Connect ski shuttle will return by popular demand for the 2023-24 season. The goal of the Cottonwood Connect ski shuttle is to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality and enhance the visitor experience.

Cottonwood Connect will begin operations on Friday, Dec. 22, 2023, and run every day through Jan. 1, 2024. The program will then run Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holidays from Jan. 5 through April 14, 2024. Reservations for rides to Alta, Brighton, Snowbird and Solitude are now being accepted. Full details, including routes and days of operation, are available at visitsaltlake.com/cottonwoodconnect .

Passengers will pay $10 one-way or $20 for a round-trip service and reservations will be required through the online booking portal This public, private partnership was established in part by Salt Lake County, Visit Salt Lake, Utah Transit Authority (UTA), Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), with supplemental support from Ski ‘N’ See. Cottonwood Connect will participate in Sandy City Police Department’s Ski Bypass Program on canyon closure days in Little Cottonwood Canyon, allowing public transportation providers to skip ahead of queued cars once the canyon has safely opened.

With three out of four Salt Lake area ski resorts requiring weekend parking reservations, residents and visitors are encouraged to choose alternate transportation to reach their ski destination. UTA Ski Buses, Cottonwood Connect, and the Wasatch Backcountry Alliance shuttle are smart transportation options that will reduce congestion and emissions in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. Comprehensive ski resort parking information can be found here.

Areas served by Cottonwood Connect include Midvale, Cottonwood Heights and Sandy, with stops at area hotels and public park & ride lots. The Driver Provider was selected as the service provider after a request for proposal process by Visit Salt Lake.

"Last season, the Cottonwood Connect was a big hit, showing that skiers and snowboarders are up for finding common sense ways to beat the traffic in our canyons," said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. "I'm excited to team up again to roll out this solution once again. It's not just about enjoying our canyons, but also about giving everyone else a break from the traffic."

“The Cottonwood Connect service is an essential component to easing the winter traffic challenges in Little Cottonwood Canyon,” said Sandy City Mayor Monica Zoltanski. “With our new Sandy Ski Bus Bypass Service, riders on Cottonwood Connect shuttles, along with UTA buses, essentially have a “fast pass” to get to get to the front of the line on busy ski days.”

“The key to cleaner, more efficient transportation to Utah’s ski resorts is collaboration,” said UTA Executive Director Jay Fox. “We appreciate our community partners coming to the table to find creative solutions for moving skiers, boarders and other visitors up and down the canyons. We see Cottonwood Connect as a complementary service to UTA’s Ski Buses and employee vanpool program to reduce single-occupancy vehicles and congestion.”

"We appreciate the opportunity to partner with the community on this program and are excited to support transportation options that reduce vehicles in the Cottonwood Canyons,” said UDOT Transit Project Manager Devin Weder. “We continue to work towards implementing Phase 1 improvements such as increased and improved bus service and hope that everyone takes full advantage of this great shuttle service as we transition to transit oriented travel in the canyons."

Visit Salt Lake is a private, non-profit corporation responsible for the promotion of Salt Lake as a convention and travel destination. In partnership with Salt Lake County, Visit Salt Lake improves the. area economy by attracting and providing support to conventions, leisure travelers and visitors with a strong commitment to sustainability and stewardship of the area’s natural environment. Getting Around Salt Lake City: Guide to Public Transportation

visit salt lake shuttle

KuntalSaha/Getty Images

Salt Lake City is served by a transit system called the Utah Transit Authority (UTA), Unlike many major cities, the UTA covers not just SLC, but the surrounding region as well, including Salt Lake County, Ogden, Utah County, and parts of Brigham City. While the UTA offers several ways to get around, people tend to take the bus and TRAX, a light rail network. Between the two, riders can get to many locations throughout the valley.

How to Ride the UTA Buses

With more than 120 routes, 6,200 stops, and a fleet of more than 400 buses, the UTA buses crisscross Salt Lake City and well beyond. Of Salt Lake City’s public transit options, you are most likely to use these during your trip. Fortunately, they’re easy to ride and are accessible to just about everyone.

  • Fares : A single one-way ticket on UTA buses is $2.50 for adults, students, and youth. Seniors 65 and up as well as those who are qualified for reduced fare pay $1.25. If you’re a frequent rider, you can purchase a FAREPAY card and get 40 percent off bus fare.
  • Passes: Day passes are $6.25. Monthly passes are $83.75 for adults, $62.75 for students and youth, and $41.75 for seniors and reduced fare riders.
  • Routes and Hours: Depending on the route, buses run every 15 minutes, every 30 minutes, only during rush hour, or seasonally (ski buses). Times that each route operates can vary widely. In general, there is more service on weekdays, with many routes starting around 5 a.m. and continuing until midnight or 1 a.m. On weekends, service starts later in the morning and usually ends by 8 p.m. If you require service early or late, make sure to check the schedule carefully for the date you’re traveling.
  • How to Pay: There’s a variety of ways you can pay to ride UTA buses. You can pay in cash on the bus, buy a pass online , use a FAREPAY card, or use the GoRide app on your phone.
  • Transfer Information: Transfers can be made between buses for two hours after you purchase a ticket or tap your pass.
  • Accessibility: All of UTA’s buses are accessible to those with disabilities, and come with ramps and the ability to kneel.
  • Planning Your Trip: You can use the Trip Planner on the UTA website to help you figure out the best way to get from point A to point B, or check out details about the routes, schedules , and departure times.

Riding TRAX

TRAX is a light rail system with 42.5 miles of track, 50 stations, and three lines: the Blue Line (which runs from Draper to Salt Lake City); the Red Line (which runs from South Jordan to the University of Utah); and the Green Line (which runs from West Valley to the Salt Lake City International Airport).

TRAX is a fun way to get around downtown for free if you enter in the Free Fare Zone between N. Temple and 500 S, and 400 W and 200 E. Otherwise, the cost to ride is the same as the bus, with 20 percent off when you use your FAREPAY card. You can purchase your ticket from one of the machines on the platform, a UTA customer service office, or the GoRide app.

This public transit option runs seven days a week, with 15 minutes between trains during peak times. For passengers with disabilities, ramps deploy at the push of a button.

Riding the FrontRunner

FrontRunner is a commuter rail train that runs the 89 miles between Pleasant View and Provo, with Salt Lake City in between. There are 16 stops along the way, many of which allow riders to connect with TRAX and bus routes. FrontRunner trains are in service from Monday through Saturday, running up to every 30 minutes during peak times.

The cost of a ticket ranges from $2.50 to $19.40, depending on your route . Like the bus and TRAX, FrontRunner fares are good for two hours from purchase. If you need to transfer, you can hop right onto a bus or TRAX line (and deduct the cost from your bus or TRAX ticket). Those with FAREPAY cards can get up to 20 percent off.

Like the bus and TRAX, FrontRunner is accessible to those with disabilities.

S-Line Streetcar

The short and sweet two miles of streetcar route connects Sugar House and South Salt Lake City. The S-Line is a great way to hop around the neighborhoods it serves, but also serves as a way to connect to the bus or TRAX lines.

Like TRAX, you’ll purchase your fare at ticket machines on the platforms, or you can use FAREPAY cards or the GoRide app. Tickets cost as much as the local bus and TRAX; use the FAREPAY card for 20 percent off.

Ski buses run from several destinations in Salt Lake City to a number of ski resorts just outside of town . Pick-up points vary per season so be sure to check the site for the most up-to-date locations and to see whether your resort stay includes free transfers.

GREENbike is Salt Lake City’s bike share program. You can sign up simply by finding one of the stations, selecting the dock number of the bike you want to use, and following the prompts. You can return the bikes to any of the docking stations around town.

It's $7 for a 24-hour membership and $15 for a 4-day pass. Rides up to 30 minutes are free with the cost of membership. If you go beyond 30 minutes, you’ll pay $5 for every 30 minutes after that (up to a daily max of $75). You can check out bikes any time of day, but the program does close down for winter months.

Taxi and Ride-Sharing Apps

If a bike, bus, light rail, or train is not practical, rest assured you won’t have trouble finding a ride in Salt Lake City. Uber, Lyft, Yellow Cab, and other taxi companies all operate in the city, including at Salt Lake City International Airport .

Car Rentals

Since UTA is regional, you can get out of the city with public transit. However, if you want the flexibility and freedom to come and go exactly as you please, renting a car is always an option. You’ll find lots of rental companies at the airport. Salt Lake City is an easy city to drive around, as the roads are generally wide by design and not too tough to navigate (though the street addresses do take a little getting used to).

Tips for Getting Around Salt Lake City

  • You can purchase a Premium Pass that works for the bus, TRAX, Express Bus, Streetcar, and FrontRunner. Premium Passes are $198 for adults, $148.50 for students and youth, and $99 for seniors and reduced fare.
  • Public transit shuts down during the night, but exactly when it does depends on the day and which transit option you’re looking at. Check the schedule of your route carefully if you plan to travel later in the evening.
  • While UTA options can take you far and wide, you will be limited in your ability to get out into Utah's canyons and other natural expanses . If this is your priority, consider renting a car at least for that part of your visit.
  • There is a Free Fare Zone located downtown between N. Temple and 500 S, and 400 W and 200 E. If you stay downtown close to this area, you can get to many places without having to pay for transit at all.
  • If you plan to take the Ski Bus , stay near one of the stations to minimize any complications in getting there. If you need to be at a resort at a specific time, allow yourself plenty of extra time on these buses as they run during the winter and conditions may be snowy.
  • FAREPAY cannot be used on Paratransit, and you don’t get discounts if you use your FAREPAY card on the ski bus or PC-SLC Connect.
  • If you need to transfer between the bus, TRAX, FrontRunner, or S-Line Streetcar, UTA recommends planning at least 7-10 minutes between transfers to make sure you make your connection.
  • Paratransit services are available for those who are unable to independently use the public transit options.

Traveling to Utah

Whether you fly into the Salt Lake City airport, drive or ride to Utah, you’ll find an adventure when you get here. Learn about air, bus and rail services and other ways to travel here.

Utah is accessible to the world via Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). Starting in Salt Lake City is the best place to begin your trip if you want to understand Utah’s culture, history and local flavors — and see the towering mountains overlooking the city. Travelers can also fly into Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport for slightly closer access to Southern Utah sites, including a 2.5-hour drive from Zion National Park, St. George and Kanab.

Additional connection flights from SLC or other airports in the region include Provo (PVU) , located along the Wasatch Front in the Northern Utah region, and St. George (SGU)  and Moab/Canyonlands (CNY) in the Southern Utah region. Ogden (OGD) has an airport, but commercial flight options are not available. It is very convenient to get to Ogden from the Salt Lake City International Airport as there is a Front Runner commuter rail servicing both cities.

Bus and Rail Travel

Experienced travelers say Amtrak's  California Zephyr  is one of the most beautiful train trips in North America. The Zephyr runs daily between Chicago and San Francisco. Utah stops include a staffed station in Salt Lake City and unstaffed stops in Provo, Helper and Green River. Amtrak bus service connects to Ogden.

If you prefer to go by bus, Greyhound Bus Lines offer frequent service to and  throughout Utah  on its transcontinental routes along all interstates (I-15, I-84, I-80 and I-70) as well as to Denver along U.S. 40 and Moab along U.S. 191. Greyhound provides the primary means of public transportation to Southern Utah. Another affordable option to consider when planning your Utah trip is  Salt Lake Express .  Check for current specials and shuttle services between St George and Springdale hotels as well (~$78) — and keep in mind that Springdale hotels have easy access to the free Zion National Park multi-passenger shuttle system during the warmer months.

Traveling Around Utah

The best way to explore the state is to rent a car, though there are private shuttle and tour options. In the Wasatch Front urban corridor of Northern Utah there is great public transportation, including TRAX light rail, FrontRunner commuter rail and the UTA bus system. For statewide travel, it takes time to travel between major locations. Take advantage of the many scenic byways to enjoy the local scenery, small towns and off the beaten track attractions.  Learn more about transporation and getting around Utah.

Want to ski in the Cottonwood Canyons? Get ready for some traffic.

Most cottonwood canyon resorts will require paid reservations. carpooling, an improved ski bus and other shuttles are alternatives..

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Skiers and snowboarders line up for the ski bus along Wasatch Blvd. near Big Cottonwood Canyon as the Salt Lake Valley gets covered in snow on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023.

Even Stephen King couldn’t come up with some of the psychological tortures Bret Monsler and other skiers and snowboarders have experienced recently while trying to get into the Cottonwood Canyons on a powder day.

There’s the aggravation of sitting in traffic for an hour and a half to complete the 15-mile drive up Big Cottonwood Canyon, only to be turned around because Brighton Resort’s parking lot is full. The monotony and paranoia of driving circles around a packed lot hoping to spy a pair of backup lights — and the anxiety over getting there in time to snag the empty space. Then there’s the intense FOMO felt at a bus stop when Ski Bus after Ski Bus whizzes by, each packed so tightly with riders that they don’t dare open their doors.

“Last year,” said Monsler, who lives in Sandy, “it was such a horror story.”

No sequel is expected this year, however. Both the Utah Transit Authority and individual resorts along the Wasatch Range have implemented changes in parking and transportation operations. Those initiatives, combined with the efforts of groups like the Wasatch Backcountry Alliance and Visit Salt Lake to organize shuttles, might just take the dread out of getting into and out of the mountains.

Get comfortable with paid reservations

Brighton’s parking problems have been bubbling up for a few years now.

When Solitude Mountain Resort became the first ski area in the state to start charging for parking in 2019, some would opt to park for free at Brighton instead. That, combined with its penned-in location at the top of the canyon and a steady uptick in visitation across the industry post-COVID made finding parking increasingly difficult.

Add in the record snowfall the state experienced last season — which took even more spaces off the table as plow drivers ran out of places to put new snow — and the cut of a Ski Bus route serving the canyon, and those troubles finally boiled over. The town of Brighton started issuing parking tickets that cost more than a lift ticket . The resort’s social media channels told people not to come.

“I wouldn’t call it a total free-for-all,” said Monsler, who usually opted to avoid the drama by skiing at Park City Mountain instead, “but somewhat.”

This year, people heading to Brighton in the morning will know there’s a spot waiting for them. After watching other resorts in the area deal with similar problems through reservations and/or paid parking, Brighton opted to adopt both. Reservations will be required daily from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will cost $20. Brighton passholders — but not Ikon passholders — will park for free as will carpools with three or more people.

Solitude will also add weekend reservations this season until 11 a.m. Between then and 1 p.m. and during weekdays, reservations will not be required, but visitors will still have to pay to park. The rates will be $20 on weekdays and $35 on weekends, though carpools of four or more are free. No reservations or fees are required after 1 p.m.

In Little Cottonwood Canyon, Alta Ski Area will continue to require reservations on weekends and early mornings. They will be needed Friday to Sunday and holidays until 1 p.m. ($25) and daily for anyone arriving before 8 a.m. ($15) between Dec. 15 and March 31. Neighboring Snowbird, meanwhile, is sticking to its hybrid model. Guests can make paid reservations or pay for parking upon arrival, but much of the parking near the resort is free.

In addition, free, no-reservation parking will continue to be available on the south side of State Route 190 and SR 210. However, fines for illegal parking have increased greatly, from $25 last year to $75-125 for the 2023-24 season.

Brighton spokesperson Jared Winkler said the intent is to alleviate frustration, not squeeze skiers and boarders for more money.

“Our goal is to try to make it to where people can get up here, they can get the parking spot that they expected and have the day that they paid for,” he said, “versus just getting let down immediately — from being stuck looking for a parking spot and getting turned away. So hopefully, hopefully this helps.”

Elsewhere in the Wasatch, Park City Mountain will require paid parking reservations until 1 p.m. at its Mountain Village lots , within the town. Parking at the Cabriolet lot at Canyons Village will be free until it fills. Paid parking options are available at upper Canyons lots. Meanwhile, Sundance Resort will charge for parking in all lots on the weekends with optional paid parking on weekdays. Reservations are not required.

Winkler said a few years ago, its customers would have raged against reservations. Now they’re asking for them. Mosler is proof of that.

“I think we’ve kind of run out of options here,” he said. “I mean, I would prefer to pay as little as possible to enjoy our sport. But this is one of the things we’ve got to do. Utah’s got growing pains and that’s part of it.”

UTA offering surge protection

Speaking of pains, the UTA and its Ski Bus riders felt plenty of them last year.

A record snow season and record resort visits piled like an avalanche on top of a transit agency already hobbled by staff shortages. UTA had announced route cuts that by some estimates would slice 75% of ski services, including the entire 953 line up Little Cottonwood Canyon, before the season began. Then, when the snow and riders kept coming, it had to scramble to find solutions as people waited, at times for hours, for a bus to the mountains. To get a seat, they had to board near the route’s origin near the Trax blue line. For many, that meant driving west to go east and adding a half hour or more to their overall travel time.

The 2023-24 season was shaping up to be nearly as vexatious after UTA told resorts in April that it expected a similar driver shortage this winter. Since then, though, the agency, the resorts and a few interested organizations have come up with some stopgaps they hope will make ski trips a little smoother.

Most notably, the UTA will be offering “surge service” on powder days and as often as possible when bodies and boards start to stack up at bus stops. The agency tried that tactic last year with little relief. This year is different, said Carlton Christensen, UTA’s board chair. The agency is paying drivers to be on call. Plus, it has pushed resorts to clear a smoother path for buses to make routes faster.

Additionally, several of the resorts are now paying for the UTA to provide separate shuttles for employees — in addition to the vanpools — which frees up more Ski Bus seats.

“About half of our passengers are actually employees of the ski resorts,” Christensen said. “So that’s how they get to work. And the resorts are very dependent [on that]. In fact, their concern last year was not a concern of, ‘How do we get skiers up there?’ It’s: ‘How do we get our employees up there?’”

Ski Bus service into the Cottonwood Canyons is scheduled to run from Nov. 26 to April 13. The resorts pay the fare for both Ikon and individual resort season passholders. Otherwise the fare is $5 each way.

“I believe we’re in a stronger position,” Christensen said, “and that people that come to get on a bus would have a reasonable expectation of getting a ride up the canyons.”

A few shuttle services have also popped up to help alleviate the pressure on the Ski Bus.

The Cottonwood Connect Ski Shuttle caters to out-of-town visitors but can be ridden by anyone who books a reservation. Run by Salt Lake County and Visit Salt Lake, it stops at several hotels and park-and-rides on its way to and from the canyons. It will operate Friday to Sunday and holidays from Dec. 22 to April 14. Prices have not yet been set, but last season it cost $10 each way. Wasatch Backcountry Alliance also offers a shuttle to and from Alta every Saturday. Reservations are required and, though it is free, donations are accepted.

In addition to the Cottonwood Canyons, UTA Ski Buses also service Powder Mountain, Snowbasin and Sundance.

Monsler said ease of parking ranked highly among several factors that convinced him to buy an Epic Pass. Most days, he said, he can park for free at the Canyons Village and be strapped into his snowboard before he’d be halfway up one of the Cottonwood Canyons. Getting there without a vehicle is considerably more difficult — albeit free.

No designated Ski Bus exists to take skiers and boarders from the Salt Lake Valley to the resorts in Park City. Anyone wanting to take public transit will need to board the 107 bus — the easternmost stop of which is at the University of Utah Medical Center station — to Kimball Junction. After arriving at the Kimball Junction Transit Center, catch a High Valley Transit bus to Park City Mountain’s Canyons Village or Mountain Village or to Deer Valley Resort’s Snow Park Lodge. When the roads are clear, the route to Canyons Village from the university is estimated to take an hour and a half.

What to expect when Salt Lake City airport opens new, very blue 'river tunnel'

Estimated read time: 5-6 minutes

SALT LAKE CITY — As Salt Lake City was going through the process of designing what the city's new airport would look like, airport officials spotted a constant theme from those who engaged in the process.

A desire for the airport to reflect a sense of place emerged from the feedback.

"People wanted to be sure that anybody who is coming through the airport knew where they were," said Bill Wyatt, director of the Salt Lake City International Airport. "They wanted the airport to reflect this place."

This inspired the artwork found inside and outside of the airport, including the large mountain sculpture outside of the airport and the canyon motifs inside Concourse A, representing the natural features found throughout Utah. A similar art feature is being installed inside Concourse B as part of a project to expand the facility.

The airport's central tunnel — set to open in October — will carry the theme even further. Salt Lake City International Airport officials offered a sneak peek of the 1,175-foot-long "river tunnel" that will soon connect Concourse A to Concourse B, cutting some of the travel time for people flying out of the second concourse.

Construction crews swung open a pair of security doors Wednesday morning to reveal the enchanting and extremely blue art feature that aims to symbolize the water that flows between the canyon walls of Utah's natural landscape and inside the airport.

Inside the river tunnel

Salt Lake City International Airport's "river tunnel" features blue fabric on the ceiling and parts of the walls, replicating the flow of water and the wavy canyon pattern found in the concourses on each side of the tunnel. Large LED-box lighting features are placed on the ceiling of the tunnel to replicate the natural light above the water, flowing above sparkling blue terrazzo flooring.

Gordon Huether, who has designed most of the airport's artwork, isn't quite sure what type of hue he and airport officials settled on, but he says the initial concept was a bit "darker and moodier" before staff "started freaking out a little bit" about it. The art project only took about three weeks to install, a fraction of the whole tunnel project.

"This is where we landed because this is what made the most sense," he said. "It totally ties into the canyon."

Speakers will be placed throughout the tunnel that will play nearly 100 mostly water-themed songs, ranging from artists like Talking Heads, Sade, Post Malone and the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, as part of the experience.

While the art piece is now in place, the tunnel isn't complete just yet. Crews will spend the next few months working to connect both ends to the airport's two concourses.

Yet airport officials believe it will address what people want in the airport when the feature opens on Oct. 22.

"What people will come to see when everything is done is that this all connects us all to this place in a special way," Wyatt said.

A challenging project

The tunnel could solve one of the biggest complaints since the new airport opened, too — "the walk" between Concourse A and Concourse B. Wyatt said the new tunnel takes about three minutes to walk and eliminates the need for people to walk halfway through Concourse A just to reach the only tunnel that connects the two concourses.

The first tunnel was built about 20 years ago — well before any of the other airport construction — but it wasn't intended to be the primary tunnel connecting the two structures. However, construction of the central tunnel couldn't begin until the old airport was demolished since it's located beneath the old Concourse D.

That hasn't been the only constraint. Crews had to excavate all the land for the tunnel because the area's unique terrain and higher water table — plus existing infrastructure — made it impossible to bore like most tunnels are constructed, said Julito Ganchero, who has overseen the development of the tunnel and Concourse B expansion.

The project began in 2021 and took about two years just to clear out the space for the tunnel. And since the tunnel people will travel through is about 26 feet underground — deeper than the water table — the project required an intricate design to keep out leaks, something that impacted the older tunnel last month .

Work was also done to cancel out the noise and vibrations caused by aircraft that travel on the apron above the tunnel.

"There (were) so many challenges that we had to overcome as we built the structure," Ganchero said.

In all, nearly 33 miles of steel piles were used to support the structure, while 3,825 tons of rebar and 48,118 cubic yards of concrete were also used for reinforcement. The tunnel's volume is over 2.2 million cubic feet, which could hold about 25 Olympic-sized swimming pools if it were filled up by an actual river.

The project cost about $80 million altogether, including $5.5 million for the art installation. It's part of the third and fourth phases of construction that airport officials planned to cover through bonds that would be repaid through various airport revenues, such as landing fees, terminal rentals and other fees that airlines pay the airport.

The 'beginning of the end' of construction

Wyatt views the central tunnel as a major turning point in the decadelong construction of the new airport. Once it's finished, Concourse B will command the entire focus of ongoing airport construction. That project is expected to be completed over the next few years.

"I think when this opens, it will be the beginning of the end," he said. "We can see our way to the finish line."

What passengers won't see beginning on Oct. 22 is a massive and empty tunnel to the east of "the river." This is an area set aside for a train that will be installed once the airport begins work on a third concourse.

It's not clear when that will happen because the project will begin when the airport reaches 35 million annual passengers, about 8 million more than last year's record volume . Wyatt says current trends have the airport reaching the trigger threshold by the early 2030s, but he also cautions that airline travel can fluctuate depending on business and economic factors.

So time will only tell when any train service will begin.
