Top-Rated Okanagan Wine Tours!

a close up of a stool

Our tour of the wineries between Osoyoos and Oliver that we went on with MJ in mid-July was simply wonderful. MJ was simply amazing! Knowledgeable, friendly, and courteous. Thank you so much for arranging the tour for us. We visited wineries we may not have gone to if we had done things on our own!

Osoyoos Wine Tours went above and beyond. We told them it was my birthday and they sent us out in the large SUV limo! Exceptional, very informative, and he adapted our tour based on what wines we wanted to try. A birthday I will never forget and we very much appreciate the extra steps they took to make it special.

I booked a South tour for the Oliver / Osoyoos area and it was a wonderful experience. We were picked up at our hotel, and the driver was very knowledgeable of both the area and the wine industry. Silver Sage is a must! I can't wait until next time! Already planning another tour with my girlfriends for this summer!

Spectacular wineries with incredible vistas of the valley. We were never rushed, got to taste some interesting and great tasting wines. Our guide's knowledge of the region was thorough. I had a great time, got to taste great wines, and did not have to worry about driving after tasting. All around a great experience!

10 Best Wineries in Osoyoos, British Columbia

British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley is the wine capital in Canada with over 200 vineyards and 120 wineries. At the southernmost tip of the Valley is Osoyoos, Canada’s warmest spot and a haven for red wine. Coupled with the nearby town of Oliver, Osoyoos wine country boasts nearly 50 different wineries to discover.

Straddling the Canada-US border, the South Okanagan flourishes on the sunbaked shores of Osoyoos Lake. Osoyoos vineyards are blessed with an average of 1,550 growing degree days and loads of sunshine. The dry days and cool nights create desert-like conditions which are ideal for juicy, sun-ripened red grape varieties.

Naturally, the Osoyoos wine industry is primarily focused on reds, with a couple white wines sprinkled in between. The main varietals include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Chardonnay. And if you head 20 minutes north to Oliver, BC, you’ll also find a fair share of Pinot Gris .

If you’re paying a visit to the South Okanagan, these are the 10 best Osoyoos wineries to check out!

Top Wineries in Osoyoos to Visit in the Okanagan Valley

Best wineries in osoyoos for great reds , black hills estate.

One of the top Osoyoos wineries, Black Hills Estate is located on the famed Black Sage Bench. This wine region is surrounded by desert hills and has some of the best growing conditions in British Columbia. Owned by Andrew Peller Ltd., Black Hills Estate planted their first crop in 1996, making this one of the oldest vineyards in the region.

This Osoyoos-Oliver winery is known for Bordeaux and Rhone varietals . Their red blend, Nota Bene , is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. It’s a must-try at the Black Hills tasting room, which you can visit year-round for CAD $20. Your flight will include five of their best wines in reds and whites.

Burrowing Owl Estate Winery

Another of the Black Sage Bench wineries near Osoyoos is Burrowing Owl Estate . This family owned and operated winery has been making wine since 1993 and is renowned as one of the best wineries in Osoyoos. Burrowing Owl combines traditional techniques with modern technology to create exceptional blends and is one of the most popular BC wines. Plus, they implement sustainable practices like solar energy and organic farming to minimize their impact on the environment.

The estate welcomes visitors to their swimming pool-clad guesthouse right on the property. Spend the weekend, visit the tasting room, or dine at the Sonora Room Restaurant, one of the best restaurants in Osoyoos.

It’s the perfect place to sip on a roster of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. Tastings can be reserved for CAD $5 for five wines with tasting fees contributing to the Burrowing Owl Conservation Society. If you visit in the summer, you can join a guided wine tour for CAD $10-40 per person.

LaStella Winery was created in the vision of La Dolce Vita : “fine food, wonderful wine, great music, and the good things in life.” Situated in Osoyoos Lake wine country, LaStella is a hidden gem of the Okanagan Valley. It’s considered by many to be one of the best wineries in Osoyoos thanks to its catalogue of sensational wines.

Sister winery to Le Vieux Pin , LaStella has been boasting a range of white and red wines since 2006. The winery offers a series of red blends like Fortissimo and Espressivo , along with a signature Chardonnay .

Unlike the Pinot Noir varieties of the northern Okanagan Valley, the reds in this region are rich, juicy, and complex. Sample a flight of four wines at the tasting room for CAD $10 and enjoy them on the seasonal patio. Reservations aren’t needed and tasting fees go to the Canucks Autism Network.

Gold Hill

Gold Hill Winery is a family-owned winery that’s rooted in centuries of tradition. The Gill family purchased 65 acres of vineyards on the Golden Mile and in the heart of Osoyoos in 2009. Since then, they’ve been producing delicious Okanagan Valley wines crafted from the finest Oliver-Osoyoos grapes.

Gold Hill’s lineup of premium small-lot wines feature juicy, well-balanced, and highly regarded wines. Notably, their Grand Vin and Cabernet Franc continuously win awards among the top BC wineries in Osoyoos.

Tastings are available indoors or outdoors at the winery for CAD $15, which includes five wines. Reservation is a requirement and note that tasting fees are waived with a purchase.

Must-try wine from Gold Hill: Family Reserve Meritage 2013

Culmina Family Estate

Culmina Family Estate Winery produces fabulous red and white wines with a low intervention philosophy. The Triggs family purchased the vineyard in 2007 and blends traditional practices with modern technology to preserve the natural character of the grape . All of their grapes are handpicked and sorted , which is unique to other wineries in Osoyoos.

Culmina uses sustainable practices to craft Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec, and their signature blend, Hypothesis . Culmina’s tasting room is open seasonally with a range of tasting experiences. The Provenance Tasting is CAD $20 per person, which includes three wines and a waived tasting fee with purchase. Reservations are highly encouraged.

Church and State Winery

Sitting on 85 acres of pristine wine country land, Church and State Winery is one of our favourite wineries in the Okanagan Valley and has been handcrafting wine since 2009. Their goal is to let the flavours of the grapes shine through so that the wines speak for themselves. This gives customers “freedom of belief,” which is the meaning of Church and State.

Like other wineries in Osoyoos and Oliver, Church and State produce mainly reds. Try the Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Malbec, or Cabernet Sauvignon on an Estate or Terroir Tasting. For CAD $15-30, you’ll sample wines while looking out over the infamous Coyote Bowl and Golden Mile Bench.

NK’MIP Cellars

NK’MIP Cellars (pronounced in-ka-meep) boasts a lot of firsts in the Oliver-Osoyoos wine region. Not only was it the first winery in Osoyoos , it’s the first Indigenous-owned winery in British Columbia and North America as a whole. Owned by the Osoyoos Indian Band, NK’MIP sits on 1,200 acres of land and produces award-winning wines, including Pinot Blanc, Merlot, and Chardonnay.

Consistently ranked as one of the best wineries in BC, NK’MIP welcomes visitors to learn the story behind the wine. There’s an interpretive cultural centre onsite, along with a tasting bar open daily. Visit the vineyards on Osoyoos’ east bench for a variety of year-round tasting experiences or a seasonal dinner at the winery restaurants. Wine flights start at just CAD $5 per person with food pairings and vineyard events available with a reservation.

Hester Creek Estate Winery

Inspired by Italian vineyards, BC wine pioneer Joe Busnardo opened Hester Creek (under the name Divino Estate) back in 1968. They began planting Merlot and Pinot Blanc in the early days and have since expanded to 115 acres of flourishing grapes. The Oliver winery and vineyard now grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Pinot Gris, Sémillon, and Syrah.

Visiting Hester Creek Winery is one of the best things to do in Osoyoos thanks to their popular patio restaurant that comes alive with live music and Tuscan-style dining .

Hester Creek offers complimentary tastings for five wines or a Signature Tasting for CAD $15. We recommend making a reservation to visit this Osoyoos winery.

CheckMate Artisanal Winery was born with a goal to make a new world Chardonnay and Merlot with old-world elegance. South Okanagan wineries are some of North America’s best, but still take notes from the French classics’ oldest vines. With 40 years of grape growing under their belt, the von Mandl family started CheckMate in 1994.

CheckMate is one of the most focused Oliver wineries with only Chardonnays and Merlots onsite. Sample them with a CAD $30 Tournament Experience at the vineyard or a CAD $45 Advantage Experience . You’ll see why it’s one of the best wineries in Oliver and Osoyoos!

You can visit the winery—located across the street from Silver Sage Winery—seasonally in the spring and summer for wine tours and tastings. 6 of the Best Wineries in Osoyoos

Sunsets over the wineries in osoyoos

Wineries in Osoyoos last updated: April 7, 2023

If you love sipping wine while surrounded by beautiful views, you’re going to love our list of the top 5 wineries in Osoyoos, British Columbia !

North America has grown over the last century to become one of the top wine-producing regions of the world. Despite our relatively short history of producing wine, the major producers of America and Canada are becoming notable contenders to the illustrious wine history of Europe.

For the wine-loving travellers who are looking to expand their knowledge of New World grapes, there is no better place to look than Osoyoos – a strip of land just south of Kelowna . Despite being lesser known than its neighbour to the north, Osoyoos absolutely deserves to be on your list when touring Canada’s incredible (and vast) wine country. Read on to discover some of the best and most unique wineries, all of which are sure to leave an impression big enough to outlive that last bottle.

Wineries In Osoyoos

Burrowing Owl Estate Winery

Located a few kilometres north of Osoyoos lake, Burrowing Owl Estate Winery is where winemaking meets ecological sustainability. The Burrowing Owl is native to only a small portion of the surrounding land, and since before 1993 has been considered an endangered species. The winery takes special care to ensure that their practices do not harm, but rather promote, the livelihood of the owls and other creatures that might visit the area. In addition to sustainable and responsible practices, Burrowing Owl is committed to producing the highest quality wine from Osoyoos’ nuanced ecosystem. The list of awards found on their website is virtually never-ending, but I would recommend booking a tasting for yourself. 100% of the 5$ tasting fee is donated to the Burrowing Owl Conservation society , so you can enjoy a glass of wine while helping to protect the land – and animals – which define the complexity of Osoyoos.

Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is one of the top wineries in Osoyoos.

Tinhorn Creek Vineyards

If you are looking for wineries in Osoyoos with beautiful views and some of the best cuisine available in Osoyoos, you must pay a visit to Tinhorn Creek Vineyards . This winery is situated at the top of a hill which affords quite a spectacular sight of the valley below. To reach the vineyards, you must make your way up a winding driveway flanked on each side by thriving grapevines, and at the end, you will be met with an exciting list of wine-related activities. For example, Tinhorn Creek is home to Miradoro restaurant, a modern farm-to-table-inspired establishment that serves locally-sourced cuisine with panoramic views. After a tasting, you can order your favourite glass of Tinhorn Creek wine and pair it with the vibrant flavours created by executive chef Jeff Van Geest.

Osoyoos wineries

Nk’Mip Cellar

Another one of the top wineries in Osoyoos is Nk’Mip Cellars , which also happens to have one of the most beautiful locations with sweeping views of the stunning desert landscape of the South Okanagan Valley. The winery is owned and operated by the Osoyoos Indian Band, making it the first Indigenous-owned winery in North America. The winery produces a range of award-winning wines, including Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah, using only the finest grapes from their vineyards. The tasting room offers a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, and the knowledgeable staff provides a fantastic experience for visitors, sharing the history and culture of the Osoyoos Indian Band as well as the winemaking process. The food at Nk’Mip Cellars is also top-notch, with a restaurant offering delicious dishes inspired by Indigenous cuisine. All of these factors combined make Nk’Mip Cellars one of the best wineries in Osoyoos, and a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts and travellers alike.

Hidden Chapel Winery

When planning your wine tour of the Osoyoos region, it would not be complete without paying a visit to a small, family-run business. This is what you will find when you arrive at Hidden Chapel Winery . The name is no lie – just a short walk beyond the tasting room will lead you to a miniature chapel, hidden in a small clearing between verdant trees and bushes. During winery hours guests are welcome to take a seat among the pews and admire the intimate, meditative space.

The religious themes do not end at the chapel; every bottle released by the winery has a clever name inspired by the previous landowner’s piety, including White Wedding, Blushing Bride, and Holy Smoke. I can personally testify that tasting the wine produced by Hidden Chapel is a spiritual experience, as each bottle carries a nuanced flavour very much unique to this particular winery (some examples are intense smoke, high tannins, and ripe berries). And if that isn’t convincing enough, Hidden Chapel invites their guests to take home their crystal-tasting glass, itself decorated with a print of the titular chapel.

RUST Osoyoos Winery

Rust Wine Co.

If you love art just as much as you love wineries in Osoyoos, Rust Wine Co. is a perfect addition to your wine tour. Like Tinhorn Creek, Rust is situated on the top of a large hill that overlooks the sprawling fields of Oliver and Osoyoos. In front of the aesthetically modern building, which houses both the tasting room and a gallery featuring local British Columbian artisans, is a small garden and picnic table where guests can sip artfully-made wines and enjoy an elevated view. Rust Wine Co. makes it clear that they admire the land which is instrumental in the first step of making wine: growing quality grapes. Their logos are inspired by the natural rust that occurs in the surrounding region of Oliver and Osoyoos, and all images are taken by guests of the winery. Visitors are also welcome to take a stroll to the Heritage House, located just beside the main tasting room. The spectacular dichotomy between the two buildings is evident that Rust succeeds in paying homage to tradition while consistently producing new, exciting wines.

Kismet Estate Winery

The right food has the potential to make that wine you’re drinking even better. Named after the Punjabi word for “destiny”, Kismet Estate Winery is the perfect location to explore your inner sommelier as you experience elevated Indian cuisine (served at the neighbouring Masala bistro) paired harmoniously with carefully crafted wines. The environment at Kismet goes even beyond great wine, as culture has become a keystone element of the winery and its background. The story of its humble establishment begins when one of the founding brothers, Sukhwinder Dhaliwal, immigrated to the Okanagan. “We wanted to infuse our culture with everything we do at Kismet.” Explained operations manager Neelam Dhaliwal. When you visit Kismet Estate Winery, be sure to take advantage of the staff’s expertise. Not only will they provide you with the perfect wine to go with each of their dishes (paneer chicken and Pinot Grigio, mussels and Syrah, and even a prawn curry paired with a structured and full-bodied red blend), but they also offer guided tours of one of the best wineries in Osoyoos with a detailed lesson on wine production and viniculture. For seasoned wine lovers and newbies alike, there is little more rewarding than a visit to this family-owned winery and bistro.

I laughed when the article said, “Osoyoos is just south of Kelowna”. If you consider a two-plus hour drive to be ‘just south’ then okay. BTW I live around here, have bought much of the wine mentioned, and you missed quite a few wineries of note.

DID YOU KNOW?

Oliver is often referred to the 'wine capital of Canada' with over 3500 acres of wine grapes planted and the perfect moderate climate for most varieties. It was originally a gold mining area, until John Oliver brought water to this desert region in 1918.

The Golden Mile was the first designated sub-appellation in the Okanagan. Located on the western slope south of Oliver it gets the morning sun and is therefore a little cooler than the Black Sage Bench. Varieties such as Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer, and Merlot thrive here on the gravelly sandy loam soil.

The Black Sage Bench lies on the eastern slope south of Oliver and gets the hot afternoon sunshine making it ideally suited to growing varieties that like the heat stress and extra light. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah thrive here.

Osoyoos is the hottest region, and lies very close to the US border. Over 1500 acres of vines reside here. Much of the soil has a unique granite bedrock and is suited to big bold red wines.

History of Wineries in Osoyoos & Oliver BC

With a current population of around 5,000, agriculture and tourism are Osoyoos’ most important industries.

Though it wasn’t until the 1960s when grape-growing became established on a large scale. Today, wineries are a major feature of the local landscape, and for many culinary tourists, the major draw to visit.

Nk’Mip Cellars was the first Osoyoos winery, popping its first bottle in 2002. The region is now home to over 1,500 acres of lush vineyards.

As a wine region, and in comparison to neighbours in the United States and in Europe, the South Okanagan is still considered young.

With a diversity of local growers, there is also a diversity in plantings. From Pinot Noir to Tempranillo, Riesling to Viognier, the expression of local terroir is constantly being explored and rediscovered.

Officially Canada’s hottest spot, Wineries in Osoyoos are the perfect playground for red wine aficionados. The red grapes are so great here that wineries from other regions in British Columbia use the southern harvest to produce award-winning, sun-ripened red wines.

The most common grape varietals grown in Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country include:

  • Osoyoos Wines : Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah
  • Oliver Wines : Merlot, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon

Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country can easily be accessed by car along Highway 97.

There are a cluster of wineries near the US border as well as in and around the town of Osoyoos. The majority of wineries can be found along the Okanagan River between Osoyoos and Oliver.

Lakeside Cellars offers a tasting room surrounded by wine barrels.

Lakeside Cellars

5221 Lakeshore Dr , 250-495-5810

Harbans, Harkesh, Ricky and Danielle Dhaliwal are the owners of Lakeside Cellars.

The family-owned winery started offering wine tastings in 2019 through a wine cellar located off the highway while they impatiently waited for the construction of a tasting room to complete.

The vineyard location has a long agricultural history in Osoyoos as the location of the old Haynes residence and first commercial orchard. “Ricky worked with the Osoyoos Museum Society to remove any artifacts and we found enough pieces of wood that could be salvaged to build a table for the private tasting room in the new building,” said Lakeside Cellars Marketing Manager Noelle Starzynski.

When the Dhaliwals purchased the property in 2015, there were Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc vines planted in the late 90s.

Lakeside Cellars owner and winemaker Ricky Dhaliwal shared, “The new building was inspired by a French Chateau with a modern interior – our wines are traditional but made in the new world and we wanted that reflected in the design of the new building.”

Ricky comes from an orchardist family, his philosophy in the winery always starts with the fruit first. From the beginning he was focussed on having a completely estate-grown portfolio; so his varietal focus is what grows well on the particular vineyard sites. Being in the south, it’s a lot of big, concentrated reds, with a few whimsical plantings for experiment. We were the first winery, for instance, to plant Cinsault for our rosé program and that was a very successful experiment.

“I most enjoy producing Bordeaux reds. Provenir is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc working in equal parts to showcase our Oliver and Osoyoos in vineyard sites,” said Dhaliwal.

If you’re visiting in summer 2022 the new tasting room will be ready for guests to swirl and sip. You can pair wine flights with a charcuterie board if you’re feeling peckish for a picnic.

Moon Curser Vineyards offers playful wine labels.

Moon Curser Vineyards

3628 BC-3 , 250-495-5161

Beata and Chris Tolley first purchased the 6 acre piece of land that Moon Curser Vineyards sits in the Spring of 2004. It used to be an old orchard and fruit stand.

The Osoyoos winery’s name pays tribute to the gold smuggling history of the desert border town. Beata explained, “The residence on the property was originally built in the traditional style included by the many Portuguese families that landed in Osoyoos to farm – arches, red brick and a solid rectangular structure.”

The tasting room and barrel hall has been designed in homage to classic Tuscan villas featuring luxe finishes like plaster walls, custom woodwork and large Italian floor tiles.

Today, Moon Curser Vineyards is an award winning family-owned winery on the East Bench of Osoyoos, British Columbia.

The winery’s focus has always been on making premium wines from old-world grape varieties not previously planted in the Okanagan such as Tannat, Dolcetto and Touriga Nacional. These varieties have not historically been a part of the South Okanagan viticulture, but thrive in the distinctive terroir of the Osoyoos East Bench and continue to deliver unique, world class interpretations of these wines.

Moon Curser Vineyard’s Winemaker Chris Tolley works alongside Christian Scagnetti. In 2019 the duo were named #1 Best Performing Small Winery in Canada at the WineAlign National Wine Awards of Canada.

If you’re looking for an extra special experience at an Osoyoos winery book Moon Curser’s Winemaker’s Tasting led by Chris Tolley. The $75 two hour tour includes a visit to the cellar, vineyards and sit down private tasting on the outdoor deck to sip and swirl 6 wines.

Nk'Mip Cellars is the only Osoyoos Winery the is indigenous owned and operated. They serve a delicious lunch with a view!

Nk’Mip Cellars

1400 Rancher Creek Rd , 250-495-2985

Nk’Mip Cellars in Osoyoos is an indigenous winery in partnership with Osoyoos Indian Band and Arterra Wines Canada.

Nk’Mip Cellars (pronounced in-ka-meep) was established in Osoyoos in 2002. Situated on a bench overlooking the shores of Osoyoos Lake the scenic winery sits beside a tract of natural desert land, surrounded by a rolling vineyard. The vineyard is nestled into the Sonoran Desert and was designed to celebrate the natural beauty and unique arid wilderness of Canada’s only pocket desert.

Designed by Penticton-based architect Robert Mackenzie, the Nk’Mip Cellars winery building celebrates this natural beauty and unique arid wilderness. It was constructed partially underground to accommodate the cellars and make use of the natural cooling effect of the earth, while helping to reduce the building’s impact on the landscape.

Nk’Mip Cellars represents meaningful native roots and culture. The pictographs displayed on the wine labels are symbols of the power and wisdom that represent the history of its people.

Justin Hall is the indigenous winery’s winemaker and a proud member of the Osoyoos Indian Band.

“Nk’Mip Cellars is located in the southernmost region of the Okanagan Valley, right in the heart of the Vest Pocket Desert which is Canada’s hottest winemaking region. We get the sun needed to make big bold red wines with rich ripe tannins and bold fruit characters. The Desert also gives us cool nighttime temperatures which help us retain a naturally balanced acidity in the wine. Two of our wines that I recommend are the Pinot Blanc and Syrah,” said Hall.

Looking to enjoy a vineyard tour, tasting and meal at one of the Wineries in Osoyoos? We suggest Nk’Mip Cellars as it’s the only vineyard in Osoyoos that has a restaurant.

Nk’Mip Cellar’s outdoor patio restaurant offers contemporary North American cuisine featuring Farm-to-Table innovations. Highlights include Duck Fat Potatoes, Braised Bison Taco and Fried Chicken Grilled Cheese.

Best Osoyoos Winery for Italian inspired wines? La Stella Winery!

La Stella Winery

8123 148 Ave , 250-495-8180

La Stella Winery is the best wineries in Osoyoos for those looking to sample classic Italian grape varietals.

The La Stella vineyards produce great fruit, which are crafted into proprietary wines like Allegretto, Vivace and Maestoso. Since each wine has its own story, winemaker Severine Pinte conveys each unique story by naming each wine after Italian musical notes.

La Stella Winery is located a short drive from downtown Osoyoos and offers wine tastings from its Tuscan inspired tasting room. On hot sunny days visiting oenophiles can be found sniffing and swirling Cabernet and Merlot on the winery’s scenic outdoor patio.

Bordertown Vineyards in Osoyoos, British Columbia.

Bordertown Vineyards

9140 92 Ave , 250-495-3332

Bordertown Vineyards and Estate Winery is is nestled in the heart of Osoyoos. Mohan Gill and his fifth-generation farming family first opened the Osoyoos winery in May, 2015.

“Our commitment to producing the finest wines and a stunning wine tasting room have made Bordertown a destination for wine, food and travel lovers. The diversity of exposure, microclimate and soil type allow us to produce 14 very different varietals. All wines are estate grown and VQA certified,” said Gill.

Bordertown has 100 acres of vineyards. The Osoyoos winery grows Chardonnay, Riesling, Muscat, Gewürztraminer and Viognier and Pinot Gris. You’ll also find Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Gris and a young block of Grüner Veltliner.

Traditionally in the South Okanagan, the Cabernet Franc grape was used to create fine Bordeaux blends. Until of late it was never considered a stand-alone grape. Now Bordertown’s Cabernet Franc is considered a game-changer.

Executive Chef Ned Bell (formerly Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver, now Naramata Inn) wowed guests in New York City at the prestigious James Beard House by pairing it with BC salmon with mushrooms, celery root and hearts, and black truffle dressing.

The celebrated Osoyoos wine features flavours of tobacco, dark spice, herbaceous green pepper, and a tiny hint of mint. All of this is achieved while maintaining supple tannins and dark berry flavours. If there is one wine you sample at Bordertown Vineyard’s the Cabernet Franc should be it!

Best Oliver BC Wineries

When most people say they are going on a tour of the wineries in Osoyoos they often include vineyards north of the city towards Oliver.

The Oliver BC Wineries can be accessed by driving north of Osoyoos Lake towards Kelowna. Vineyards are located on both sides of the Okanagan River.

Best Wineries in Osoyoos: Maverick Estate Winery Tasting Room

Maverick Estate Winery

3974 BC-97 ,  778-437-3133

Maverick Estate Winery in Oliver enjoyed its first vintage in 2011. It’s tasting room opened later in 2016.

The property was originally an organic orchard and then transitioned to a vineyard in 2010.

The Maverick Estate Winery building was designed by architect Robert MacKenzie in nearby Naramata. The aesthetic is inspired by the traditional architecture in  South Africa , the home of the original owners. The wood features come from New Mexico, and compliment the overall design.

Jan Nelson, CEO at Maverick Winery shared, “The original owner was a winemaker who had been working at Burrowing Owl Vineyards before starting the winery. The Osoyoos winerys name comes from the Maverick identity – doing things your own way, without having to conform to expectations or what others are doing.”

Winemaker Andrew Windsor joined the Maverick Winery team in April, 2020. Windsor loves producing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Syrah.

“France taught me that wine is not just a science but an art form, a culture, and an expression of a place. Wine can take you to a place in the world without leaving your home. I want to make the best wine in Canada and the only place I can do that is at Maverick in the south Okanagan,” said Windsor.

There are vineyard tours throughout the summer on Fridays and Saturday. Cost is $20 per person, max of 20 people. Otherwise the winery features sit-down private tastings. Be sure to ask to sample their two unique artisanal ciders as well!

Looking for wineries in Osoyoos serving Indian cuisine? Enjoy a feast at Kismet Estate Winery. Pair Merlot with Masala!

Kismet Estate Winery

316 Rd 20 , 250-495-4462

Brothers Sukhi Dhaliwal and Balwinder Dhaliwal first opened Kismet Winery in 2013.

Kismet is the only Oliver or Osoyoos Winery with an Indian restaurant on site. The best way to enjoy the Dhaliwal’s wines is at lunch or dinner on the Masala Bistro restaurant patio, which overlooks the vineyard. Feast on authentic samosa , spicy curries and biryani while swirling fine wine.

The Kismet Estate Winery tasting room used to be a farm shed built by the original owners of the land from back in the early 1930s. Sukhi shared, “We decided to renew the structure as a ode to the early beginnings of this land. The heritage house on this property is also built by the same ownership and at that time, the house was built to be earthquake proof. We have made sure to preserve the natural character of the house. This will be a guest house on the property in the near future.”

Before immigrating to Canada from India , the Dhaliwal’s had never grown grapes or even tasted wine. “We arrived from the farming region of Punjab and over the years worked in various vineyards in the early 2000s. We helped plant for wineries across the Black Sage Bench.”

The family also started purchasing land, growing their own grapes and selling crop to developing wineries. “Now, we are the largest grape grower in the South Okanagan. Over time, all these wineries started winning multiple awards for the wines that we provided grapes for. Eventually, we decided we wanted to showcase our quality grape growing by making small batch wines. Kismet means destiny and we felt is was the most fitting name for our winery because it resonates with our story. We felt that we were at the right place, at the right time, surrounded by the right people to achieve the kind of opportunity and success that we have. It was simply Kismet,” exclaimed Sukhi.

Kismet Winemaker Dapinder Gill likes to create Bordeaux and Rhone Valley style wines. “One of the most unique blends we have is our Moksha which is Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, Malbec, Viognier. It is reminiscent of the GSM blend from Rhone Valley. We also have Infinity Rosé which is made of 8 different red grape varieties,” explained Sukhi.

Kismet Estate Winery offers 1 hour vineyard tours that include 6 wine tastings and are $30 per person.

Covert Farms offers a family-friendly tour in a vintage tractor perfect for kids.

Covert Farms Family Estate

300 Covert Pl , 250-498-9463

Gene & Shelly Covert are the owners of Covert Farms Family Estate in Oliver. The fourth generation farm and winery was originally established in 1959.

Fast-forward to the early 2000s and the farm shifted focus to a wine business. They converted apple orchards into vineyards and partnered with nearby growers to launch a boutique winery.

Passionate advocates of regenerative agriculture, the duo have spent years cultivating strong and healthy soil by feeding nutrients into the land and keeping harmful chemicals out; as a result, their vineyard is noticeably robust and resilient, yielding juicy grapes packed with flavour.

In 1980 a draft horse barn was built on the property and today it houses the vineyards wine shop.

Shelly shared, “Our winemaker is co-proprietor and farmer, Gene Covert. Gene’s favorite style of wine making is using a process where you use the least amount of intervention from the winemaker in the process to create a wine that best showcases the grape variety and the terroir. We are only one of a few regenerative wineries that incorporate livestock into our vineyards thereby allowing the plants to fully express themselves through their terroir.”

If it’s your first visit to Covert Farms Family Estate we suggest sipping a glass of Grand Reserve Chardonnay. Pair it with their signature Farmers Board, featuring a selection of local organic meat and cheeses, along with seasonal fruits and vegetables fresh from the farm.

Culinary tourists exploring the Oliver and Osoyoos Wineries can also book unique experiences such as an Epicurean Tasting, Private Picnics and Campfire Cookout.

Church & State Wines is located in Oliver, BC wine country.

Church & State Wines

4516 Ryegrass Rd , 250-498-2700

Church and State Wines operates two wineries in British Columbia: Oliver in the Okanagan and Saanich Peninsula on Vancouver Island .

The Vancouver Island winery produces Church & State’s fabulously fizzy sparkling wine. The remaining wines in the portfolio are produced at the Oliver winery in the South Okanagan. You can sample all of the wines grown on both Church & State vineyards when visiting either of the locations.

“The name Church & State symbolizes a balance between the many elements involved in creating the highest quality wine we can produce. This concept of balance permeates everything we do, a balance between the head and the heart, between change and tradition,” said a representative for Church & State Wines.

The Oliver winery farms 95 acres of pristine South Okanagan vineyards to produce 25,000 cases annually. It has been named producer of Canada’s Best Red Wine seven times since 2009, and received countless Gold medals, Best in Class awards and National trophies for both red and white wines. By focusing on the unique terroir of their South Okanagan Valley and Vancouver Island vineyards, Church & State Wines continually represent the cutting-edge of what is capable in Canadian viticulture and winemaking.

Perched on the edge of the Coyote Bowl in the Oliver-Osoyoos wine region, Church & State’s modern, minimalist tasting bar features daily samples of fine wine. Enjoy a tasting inside looking into the barrel room or a flight on the patio looking across to the Golden Mile.

French Door Estate Winery has the most beautiful tasting room. White on black chic that would make Coco Chanel smile!

French Door Estate Winery

5462 Black Sage Rd , 250-498-0735

Audra and Jason Shull launched French Door Estate Winery in June, 2020.

The vineyard in Oliver, BC was planted in the early 2000s and over time it has developed beautiful vines. The vineyard sits on very sandy and rocky land, which results in incredible drainage. This particular location is one of the few vineyards to see the most sun in North America, resulting in very soft, concentrated and ripe wines.

Jason Shull shared, “Our family was inspired by the simplicity and quality of French architecture, cuisine and wine during our travels to Provence . We believe the Okanagan Valley has a similar uniqueness about it, and we wanted to bring these parallels to life through the way our wine is produced and discussed.”

The owners are high school sweethearts from the town of Osoyoos, which is a 10 minute drive from French Door Winery. Since the couple relocated to Vancouver shortly after they were married, they wanted to re-establish their roots in the Okanagan. Their love for wine and their eagerness to take on a project that their whole family could be a part of is what inspired them to open a winery.

“The symbol of the French door represents how we incorporate the traditional aesthetics and values of beautiful Provence into our own backyard, with a modern twist. Our tasting room is encircled by French doors, and each one opens up into a new experience. Whether the doors lead you into our breathtaking barrel room, or onto our one-of-a-kind patio that overlooks the Okanagan valley, you are welcomed by an unspeakable aura that has been created using the best features of Provence and the Okanagan combined,” said Shull.

Winemaker Pascal Madevon was trained in Bordeaux and incorporates his French heritage into the wines. The French Door Rosé made with Mourvèdre and Grenache resembles the elegance of a traditional Provence style Rosé; dry and richly textured, with a soft pink hue.

Madevon shared, “From the beginning, I have had the honour of helping French Door Winery with their vision; to make high-quality wines right here in the South Okanagan that celebrate our remarkable climate and unique terroir. Just as importantly, we have adopted a low-intervention winemaking process to grow a fully sustainable vineyard and serve the most honest wines.”

In the Tasting Room if you’re feeling hungry you can pair your wine flight with Fancy Cocktail Nuts, Temper Chocolates or Sal de Ibiza Chips.

Oliver BC Wineries: Hester Creek Estate wine tasting with a view.

Hester Creek Estate Winery

877 Rd 8, Oliver , 250-498-4435

Curt Garland is the owner of Hester Creek Estate Winery, which opened in Osoyoos Wine Country in 1996.

Garland shared, “Over fifty years ago grapevines were first planted on the property by Italian immigrant Joe Busnardo with varietals that he had grown up with in northern Italy. The perfect location for European vinifera grapes, the site just south of Oliver was on a sun drenched bench with sloping hills that facilitate a longer growing season. Virtually unheard of at the time for British Columbia, over 80 classic European vinifera grapes were planted on the then 76 acre property.”

Several of the original varietals planted by Joe have thrived over the past half century with the Pinot Blanc, Trebbiano, “Italian Merlot” and Cabernet Franc flourishing at Hester Creek Estate Winery. These old vines have an intensity and certain elegance about them that cannot be reproduced and bring a sense of old world Italy to the popular vineyard in Oliver, British Columbia.

Visit Hester Estate Winery and you’ll find a property designed to pay homage to wineries in Tuscany. “In addition to the winery’s design, we have the Tuscan-inspired Villa accommodations and Tuscan-inspired restaurant with Terrafina,” said Garland.

Mark Hopley has been the winemaker at Hester Creek Estate since 2013. One of the wines he is most excited with is Syrah, which blends grapes from the estate with some from a long time local grower. “It’s a co-ferment, made the way Syrah is traditionally done in its Rhône Valley home, with the addition of a small amount of Viognier. What that does, is lift the aromatics. The Viognier adds delicate floral notes and a lush mouth feel to an earthy wine rich with black cherry, plum, and pepper notes, with hints of bacon and toasted coffee. Full-bodied yet elegant, this wine sells out year after year,” explained Garland.

One of our most interesting wines is the Old Vine Pinot Blanc, which is a consistent gold medal winner at competitions across North America. “It is fragrant with peach, nectarine, and apricot notes as well as hints of honey, minerality, and sagebrush. The grapes for this are from a really old block on our vineyards, Block 4, which was planted in 1968. They’re these gnarly old vines, and with age, you get less fruit hanging and more intensity in the finished product,” Hopley explained.

If you’re looking to eat at an Osoyoos Winery restaurant Hester Creek’s Terrafina is a popular fine dining option in Oliver. The menu celebrates locally grown ingredients with handcrafted, Tuscan inspired cuisine by talented Chef Adair Scott. Hester Creek also offers intimate farm-to-table cooking classes in a state of the art winery kitchen.

Black Hills Estate Winery in Oliver & Osoyoos Wine Country, BC.

Black Hills Estate Winery

4190 Black Sage Rd , 250-498-0666

Black Hills Estate Winery has been producing premium wine in Oliver since 1999. In 2017 ownership was taken over by Andrew Peller, a celebrated name in the Niagara on the Lake Winery community.

The name Black Hills Estate Winery comes from its location, the famed Black Sage Bench. This bench of land is covered in the prominent sage brush, which is what the region itself is named for.

While it has been making wine for 22 years, Black Hills Estate Winery only opened its Wine Experience Center for seated wine flights in 2012. The buildings were designed by architect Nick Bevanda and feature a sleek modern design, with materials like concrete, floor to ceiling glass windows and black steel beams.

The Oliver winery was awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Architectural Excellence and is the only estate to have received this accolade in Canada.

The vineyards are located on the Black Sage Bench, which is considered some of the most coveted grape growing land in the country. The founders of our winery planted their first vineyard here, called Sharp Rock Vineyard, in 1996.

Jesse Collins, Estate Manager at Black Hills Estate Winery shared, “Our winemaker Ross Wise MW is a New Zealand native. Ross joined our team in 2019 and has been instrumental in implementing our shift to organic viticulture. He believes in minimal intervention in the winemaking process and has pushed Black Hills Estate Winery into a new chapter over the past few years, with naturally occurring fermentation and showcasing fruit purity through fermenting in vessels like concrete and neutral oak. The style of wine that we are known for at Black Hills is French inspired, with Rhone Valley inspiration influencing our white wine portfolio and Syrah, as well as a Bordeaux take on our most infamous wine, Nota Bene.”

In Latin nota bene translates to “take note.” The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and while it is an exciting wine to taste each summer upon release, it is showing at its absolute best after a few years in the cellar.

“If you have the right conditions at home to cellar wine, we recommend bottle aging anywhere from 5- 15 years, depending on your desired style of wine. Each Fall we host a Nota Bene Vertical Tasting, giving our Wine Club members the opportunity to taste the older vintages and look back in time at each harvest, and how the quality and style has evolved over our more than two decades of winemaking. We celebrate this wine’s release with our annual Nota Bene Release Party, an evening of exquisite wine and food paired to unique entertainment and live music,” said Collins.

If you’re visiting the wineries in Osoyoos during the high season, stop by Black Hills Estate Winery for a snack. From mid-June to mid-October they serve a variety of Spanish tapas and charcuterie alongside wine flights, out of the Vineyard Kitchen.

Burrowing Owl Estate Winery offers a tasting room, patio, restaurant and boutique hotel.

Burrowing Owl Estate Winery

500 Burrowing Owl Pl , 250-498-0620

Established in 1997 and built the following year, Burrowing Owl Estate Winery straddles the north tip of the Sonora Desert.

Home to bluebirds, bats, meadowlarks, bears, bighorn sheep and of course, burrowing owls, the Oliver winery uses alternative pest control systems to safely deter indigenous species from grazing in the vineyards.

Celebrated viticulturist Jim Wyse began replanting the vineyards in 1993 with no plans for a winery. However, the recognition given to wines made with his grapes inspired Wyse to build his own winery.

Today, the grounds include not only a gravity flow system and a temperature-controlled cave/cellar, but also a beautiful wine shop, a tasting bar, a luxurious 10-room boutique hotel, 25 meter outdoor swimming pool and award-winning fine dining restaurant.

Burrowing Owl owns 140 acres of vineyards and produces between 28,000 and 30,000 cases of wine each vintage. The estate produces nine wines, entirely from grapes harvested from their own vineyard holdings.

Red wines produced are made from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah and a Meritage blend. White wines worth sampling include Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.

Arrive early in the morning at Platinum Bench to taste their very popular freshly baked bread.

Platinum Bench Estate Winery

4120 Black Sage Rd , 250-535-1165

Platinum Bench Estate Winery is located on the Okanagan’s premier growing destination, the Black Sage Bench in Oliver.

The unique micro-climate of desert sand on a western slope achieves some of the highest growing heat degree days in the valley. Hot summer days ripen the grapes. Cool evenings allow the vines to balance and advance structure to the fruit.

Platinum Bench is a local favourite and uniquely stands out from other wineries in the area for its onsite artisan bakery. We arrived shortly before 11am and there was already a long line of people waiting to purchase hot bread rolls right out of the oven.

The bread is prepared outside, within a screened in porch, so you can eye the bakers whipping around as they remove steaming loaves from 6 ovens.

Platinum Bench offers a unique wine tasting experience where red, white and rose are served alongside a slice of one of their popular breads.

Once you’ve finished sipping be sure to take home a fresh roll. Our favourites included the Double Cream Brie and Pear Preserves, Gorgonzola with Fig and Asiago.

Jackson Triggs offers a tasting room in Oliver, a brand that Niagara wine lovers will recognize.

Jackson Triggs Okanagan Estates

7857 Tucelnuit Drive , 250-498-4500

Ontario wine lovers visiting vineyards in Niagara will be familiar with Jackson Triggs as they have a jaw-dropping estate that hosts a summer concert series at an on site outdoor amphitheatre.

If you’re visiting Oliver, BC make sure to pop by Jackson Triggs Okanagan Estates to see what wine bottles they’re popping in the South Okanagan. You’ll find a spacious patio out front and a cozy tasting room inside.

Jackson-Triggs Okanagan sources grapes from some of the most beautiful vineyards found in British Columbia, many of which have been leased from the Osoyoos Indian Band since 1998. These vineyards get plenty of sunlight thanks to the southwesterly exposure they enjoy along the striking mountain slopes stretching above Osoyoos Lake. High heat during the day is balanced by the nighttime cooling effect of the lake, providing optimum conditions for vine growth and grape ripening.

Some of our favourite wines at Jackson Triggs Okanagan Estates include the Grand Reserve Chardonnay, Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Reserve Riesling Icewine.

Le Vieux Pin Winery.

Le Vieux Pin

5496 Black Sage Rd , 250-498-8388

Named for the solitary majestic old growth pine of their Oliver estate, Le Vieux Pin sits perched amidst the famed vineyards of the Black Sage Bench: Canada’s sole pocket desert, located in the South of British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

Le Vieux Pin’s vineyard strategy is an acknowledgment of the Old World with a gust of New World. Low-input viticulture is the method Le Vieux Pin uses to achieve that aim. Dry farming, minimal fertilizer addition, high-density plantings and extremely low yield allows vines to show their true nature. Le Vieux Pin employs a blend of organic and bio-dynamic practices called “non-interventionism.”

Le Vieux Pin in Oliver is the sister winery to La Stella Winery, located a short drive south towards Osoyoos. Both wineries are operated by entrepreneurs Sean and Saeedeh Salem. The Salem’s first opened Le Vieux Pin in 2006.

The estate features six vineyards: Le Grand Pin, Deadman Lake Vineyard, Le Feuille D’or, Stagg’s, U2, and Crowley, though Le Vieux Pin does not own Deadman Lake Vineyard. In total, the Le Vieux Pin has 50 acres of land, shared with its sister winery, LaStella.

The red wines that Le Vieux Pin produces are primarily made from Syrah while the whites are Viognier, Roussanne, and Marsanne.

The restaurant patio at Tinhorn Creek Vineyards has the best views of all the Osoyoos wineries.

Tinhorn Creek Vineyards

537 Tinhorn Creek Rd , 250-498-3743

Tinhorn Creek Vineyards was founded by Kenn and Sandra Oldfield and Bob and Barb Shaunessy in 1993. What started with a couple of barrels in the basement of a house and a few acres of vines has grown into a thriving winery.

Nestled in the hillside of a former gold mining creek, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards sits unrivaled on top of the Golden Mile in Oliver, and offers a truly unique wine experience. Visitors will find a lush vineyard with views of the grape crush pad, and impressive interior galleries overlooking the stainless-steel tanks, oak barrels and the cellar below.

The self-guided tour of the winery and vineyard enables visitors to stay as long as they wish and provides ample opportunities to learn more about the winemaking process.

We suggest planning a visit between May and August when the winery hosts a Canadian concert series. The Grand Finale concert in September is a real showstopper!

We’re giving Tinhorn Creek Vineyards the award for best Oliver Osoyoos winery restaurant with a view!

The wrap-around patio at Miradoro Restaurant offers unparalleled views of the valley. Book yourself a romantic Mediterranean-inspired lunch or dinner and you’ll enjoy market cuisine prepared with fresh local ingredients. Pair award-winning Reserve Cabernet Franc with Albondigas Meatballs or a spicy Diavolo Pizza.

Phantom Creek Estates is an art lovers winery in Oliver.

Phantom Creek Estates

4315 Black Sage Rd , 250-498-8367

Phantom Creek Estates first opened in June, 2020. It’s one of the newest and most exciting vineyards to explore in the Oliver BC Wineries region.

Guests arrive by strolling towards two eye-catching statues that greet oenophiles with wings outstretched over the desert sky.

Phantom Creek represents the vision of the Bai family to build one of the leading wineries in Canada. It was a quest that led them to the Black Sage Bench and two of the Okanagan’s historic vineyards: Phantom Creek and Becker Vineyards.

Today, Phantom Creek focuses on single-vineyard Bordeaux reds, Alsatian whites and the Okanagan’s benchmark varieties of Viognier and Syrah from storied vineyard sites.

Phantom Creek Estate Winemaker Mark Beringer works with grapes that are farmed naturally, organically and biodynamically. You can sample Beringer’s wine at the Oliver winery’s chic tasting room or outside on a sprawling patio with a panoramic view.

In June, 2022 Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants ranked The Restaurant at Phantom Creek Estates as #20 best restaurant in Canada. It’s the only restaurant in the region featured on the list so a must try for visiting foodies.

An Osoyoos wine tour of wineries led by women

They aren't bound by the same centuries-old rules as European wine makers

Choppy lake waters hit the shore against dense shrubland as we drove into wine country. As the road wound through the valley, we were bordered by mountains covered in sage brush. Beaten down by the sun, the distant dusty yellow slopes were accented with antelope brush and cacti. I thought of the Sonoran Desert.

We passed dilapidated barnyards, and an abandoned railway. Murmuration of starlings that change directions like schools of startled fish flew overhead. Wild horses and rattlesnakes are at home here. I thought of the Wild West.

Soon, lush orchards and grape vines blurred by miles on end. I thought of Tuscany.

This is Osoyoos B.C., less than an hour flight away from Vancouver. I was there on a wine tour of wineries producing wines made by women. “We’ve gotten more creative than the Europeans with experimenting,” said Maryke Vandermarel, the estate manager of Culmina Family Estate Winery , holding up a glass of 2017 Hyphothesis, the colour of crushed Russian amethyst.

The contrast of long, sun-baked days, and chilly refreshing night breezes make for a surprising range of wines, from golden to red velvet, and everything in between.  The vineyard at Culmina was a brilliant emerald with ripening fruit when I visited in the fall; part of the patchwork mosaic blanketing over the countryside.

“We are starting from ground zero and are coming up with new blends. Europe has remained old-world, but we are breaking traditions,” said Maryke, who left her position as the wine director for Barefoot Bistro in Whistler to start something new in Osoyoos. Perched on the Golden Mile Bench, each grape at Culmina is hand-harvested, certified organic, and grown on site, making wines suitable for a myriad of food pairings and all occasions.

Women are not only making more distinct wines in Osoyoos, but they are breaking down the science of farming. At Phantom Creek Estates, grape varieties hailing from places as far as Portugal and Austria are being grown. The two awe-inspiring, seven-metre-tall angel sculptures marking the winery entrance are a sure sign that you are in for something divine.

“We are pioneering a new industry,” said, viticulturalist Amy Richards at Phantom Creek Estates . “We are taking chances and forging through new territory, trying unique grape variants that people thought previously impossible.” Amy did her Bachelor’s in Viticultural Science back in her hometown of Australia, and went on to manage grower profiles in Napa, but it is the red grapes of the Okanagan Valley that have called her to Osoyoos.

The alluvial fans in Osoyoos’ unique topography help form benches of nutrient rich soil conducive for grape growing. After sipping the fruit-forward wine which showcases the grape for what it is, we could appreciate the vast difference from retail wine mass produced in silos.

Inside Phantom Creek’s restaurant, which featured endless, panoramic views of the Okanagan Valley, I indulged in French brioche topped with saskatoon-berry jam and creamy Jerusalem artichoke ice cream.

At family owned vinAmité Winery , we learned what makes wine feminine, with floral-forward boutique wines that capture the essence of a dozen white roses in a glass. Located off the highway vinAmité looks like an antiquated French cottage and has stunning views of a two-hectare vineyard.

Run by Wendy and Catherine Coloumbe, a French-Canadian mother-and-daughter duo, vinAmité does not shy away from featuring wines made for women by women. “From novice to aficionado, there’s a wine here for everyone,” said Catherine.

The reserve chardonnay, with notes of butterscotch and lemon meringue pie, was served to us complimented by a charcuterie board of savoury cheeses, wine jellies, pickles, and berries, topped with a sprig of wildflower. Visitors can purchase this culinary delight for just $15.

Women, it appears, have an additional gift allotted to them in the art of winemaking: a more complex taste palette.

Viticulturalist Val Tait of Gold Hill Winery , who has a degree in molecular biology and plant biochemistry, has used this to help her develop the skill of detecting a broader range of subtleties. This has led to the creation of brand-new flavour profiles which have become a favourite amongst female wine enthusiasts.

“My husband prefers bolder tastes. He likes wines that you drink at midnight with a cigar, while I like elegant expressions that are more restrained,” said Val.

Val, whose passion for making wines has been a lifetime affair, finds barrel aging one of her favourite activities, giving Gold Hill its characteristic hand-made, mature, award-winning wines, from golden Sauvignon blanc to their signature red-velvet Cabernet Franc.

At Lakeside Cellars, we drank the trademark tarty Orange Muscat which complemented the fall trees that were turning into furious shades of crimson and saffron around us. As we wound our way through the valley, we saw bulbous squash, the colour of pirate coins, glinting in the light, in front of local markets.

At Kismet Estate Winery, Manpreet Dhaliwal is the changing face of this town’s wine industry. “Being one of the first and only Indo-Canadian woman winemakers in Canada, I feel that I am breaking boundaries and stereotypes daily,” said 26-year-old Manpreet Dhaliwal.

Multiple generations of Manpreet’s family were farmers in Punjab in northern India, and even now, Kismet Winery harvests nearly 240 hectares of grapes for other wineries, keeping the best ten per cent for themselves. Every year Kismet ties in their roots with their love of wine, by throwing Holi and Diwali events, where they set up interactive booths with street snacks, jewellery, drinks, and a bar service.

Marching around in heavy work boots Manpreet showed us her family’s wine-making enterprise, which is set directly next to Masala Bistro, where you can delight in curries, and gourmet paneer pakoras and pair this Eastern delicacy with Kismet wine.

Women are not only changing wine and the Eurocentric ideas of food pairing, but how wineries interact with the community. As we sipped the trademark tarty Orange Muscat which complemented the tangerine light shimmering on the lake visible from the winery’s porch, wine manager Danielle Dhaliwal of Lakeside Cellars explained how her winery hosts yoga on the lake, candle-making, wreathmaking, and painting, as a way of integrating a sense of comradery into Osoyoos.

“The local community is important to us,” said Danielle. As such, Lakeside wants to make sure retirees are engaged and included in activities. Danielle’s sister Megan Jentsch, who has artwork featured in the winery, will be running one such interactive workshop. Growing up on her family’s farm in Oliver, after completing a diploma in business, Danielle found herself right back in familiar farming territory after marrying her husband, Ricky Dhaliwal, a viticulturalist.

Lakeside Cellars also offers a unique product which the locals love: frizzante in a can, a fun, affordable, sparkling drink.

“Women are out here just running things,” I told my husband.

“Ah, so not much different than home?” my husband joked.

Stay at the Watermark Beach Resort, located on the stunning shores of Osoyoos Lake. The Watermark offers condo-style rooms with kitchenettes. Amenities include: a jacuzzi, steam room, spa, and a gym. Night times for me were reserved for the steam room and jacuzzi after some serious wine trekking. But I knew that the next time I came here I wanted to bring my kids – for the waterslide alone.

If you like Mexican food, try TacoRiendo. Owner Jany Lopez, who once sold tortilla shells out of her truck, owns and operates this fantastic gem with trademark margaritas and homemade guacamole. A local favourite, the place was packed when we got there.
