2022 DP World Tour Schedule

In what is a major rebrand, the European Tour is set to become the DP World Tour when the 2022 season kicks off.

Ahead of what will be the 50th anniversary of Europe's premier circuit, it was announced that DP World had agreed a deal for the tour's naming rights, with a major cash injection to take prize money past the $200 million mark for the first time.

As part of the agreement, there will also be a minimum prize fund of $2m per tournament, sanctioned solely by the DP World Tour.

The aptly named circuit will travel to 27 countries and feature new events in Belgium, Japan, South Africa and the UAE. Of the 47 tournaments, 23 will be held in Europe, with the remaining 24 classified as worldwide events.

Five tournaments will make up the lucrative Rolex Series - the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic, the Genesis Scottish Open, the BMW PGA Championship, and the DP World Tour Championship - with each boasting a purse of $8m.

With Rahm, Fitzpatrick, McIlroy in contention, DP World Tour Championship sets up for a dramatic Sunday finish

With a Saturday 65, Jon Rahm holds a one-stroke lead in a tournament that he's won twice in three previous starts.

Andrew Redington

DUBAI, U.A.E. — This is a script that requires no editing, but definitely some clarification.

With one round to play in the DP World Tour Championship, the class in the field has risen inexorably to the top of the leader board. World No. 5 Jon Rahm leads at 15 under par after three circuits of the Greg Norman-designed Earth Course at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai. One shot back is U.S. Open champ Matt Fitzpatrick . European Ryder Cup player Alex Noren is third on 13 under, one ahead of World No. 1 Rory McIlroy , who is tied with Tyrrell Hatton . Last week’s winner, Tommy Fleetwood , is next, T-6 alongside the impressive Pole, Adrian Meronk .

Given all of the above, that the man who emerges as the champion at the DP World’s season-ending climax will earn around 15 World Ranking points less than the winner of the PGA Tour’s relatively star-less RSM Classic does seem a little odd. But we digress.

MORE: Jon Rahm blasts new World Ranking formula as ‘laughable’

While getting to an eventual result of this tournament will be relatively straightforward, the same cannot be said of the race to be crowned European No. 1 for 2022. As things stand after 54 holes, that title will go to McIlroy, the leader heading into the week. With Fitzpatrick in second place, the Northern Irishman’s current slot at T-4 is good enough to edge out the Englishman. Indeed, should Fitzpatrick not win the tournament, any finish seventh or better will be sufficient to give McIlroy his third win on what was once the “Order of Merit,” then became the “Race to Dubai” and is now the “DP World Tour Rankings.”

There are a couple of other, but much more unlikely, scenarios in play. Should Meronk or Fleetwood come from behind to win the tournament, both would put themselves in with a chance of a rankings victory. Meronk also would need McIlroy to slump to a spot outside the top 16 and Fitzpatrick to drop out of the top two. Technically at least, the possibility of a Fleetwood double is more likely. He would require a win for himself and a Fitzpatrick finish outside the top-three on Sunday.

Still with me?

Save for Hatton, who played the back nine in a disappointing 39 en route to an eventually pedestrian level-par 72, what just about every contender had in common was a feeling of pleasure at a third round well played, as well as excitement at the possibilities ahead.

Rahm first. In three previous appearances in this event, the burly Spaniard has two wins and a tie for fourth. So, one day on from his second round 66, his 65 on a course where he averages 67.5 was hardly a surprise.

“I don't think I could have shot any lower today,” said Rahm after his bogey-free outing. “I maximized the round. Wasn't at my best off the tee, but I was able to get some birdies out of some not-so-good situations. I didn't hit any of the fairways on the par 5s and still played them three under par. I'm hoping tomorrow I can be a little better off the tee, and still keep the good iron play and good putting going. As for why I play so well here, I hope I never find out so that I just keep coming here with a good vibe. The second you know, it's gone.”

MORE: Rory McIlroy says for truce with LIV Golf, ‘Greg [Norman] needs to go’

McIlroy was making equally positive noises after his own 65. Seven birdies and an eagle dotted his card, offset only by two bogeys in the opening three holes. Only one under par through 33 holes, the four-time major champion has gone 11 under for the next 21 in his quest to become only the second man (after Henrik Stenson in 2013) to win the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup and the DP World Tour rankings in the same season.

1442752826

Rory McIlroy played the first 33 holes of the DP World Tour Championship one under par and the next 21 at 11 under.

David Cannon

“I hit it in the fairway a bit more today, which made a big difference,” McIlroy said. “I was able to get control of my approach shots and hit them close and make some easy birdies. I thought that last three holes yesterday [ birdie-birdie-eagle ] could really kickstart a little bit of momentum for me, and I brought that into today. I've played so well on this course over the years. I know how to shoot low scores and I know how to make birdies. It was just a matter of getting it out of myself.

“I am excited to put myself in the mix,” he continued. “Tomorrow is a big day. I just have to go out there and try to shoot another good score. There is some of it outside my control, but if I can play a good round of golf, that makes it a bit easier.”

Easier, but hardly easy. Not considering this leader board.

2022 DP World Tour Championship scores: Jon Rahm wins for third time, Rory McIlroy wins points title

Two of the best in the world shined this weekend in dubai.

DP World Tour Championship - Day Four

Jon Rahm began the week sounding off about the Official World Golf Rankings . He ended it by collecting all the points available at the DP World Tour Championship and taking his third title of the season and third DP World Tour Championship in the last six editions of the event.

Rahm was adamant early in the week about how beating a handful of the best players in the world at the DP World Tour Championship was more difficult than beating a whole host of average players at the RSM Classic. Rahm received 22 points for beating Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton and Viktor Hovland, while whoever wins the RSM later in the day on the PGA Tour side will receive 38 points.

Rahm went against his own logic and made beating the top players -- there were seven others in the field who rank in the top 30 in the OWGR -- look rather easy. After a 70-66-65 start, Rahm shot 67 on Sunday while playing alongside U.S. Open champion Fitzpatrick. Combined, those two have now won five of the last seven DP World Tour Championships.

After going out in 33, Rahm came home in 34 for the trophy. At 20 under, he beat Hatton and Alex Noren by two and McIlroy by four.

"Because of COVID I never got a chance to defend my 2019 title, and even though I decided not to come last year, I came with the mentality that, well, nobody beat me in the last two years, so they are going to have to beat me again," Rahm said.

Rahm has won this tournament now in three of the last four times he's teed it up. He is 72 under and has defeated 212 of 217 competitors in those four starts. As referenced, he did not play it in 2020 as the defending champion nor did he make it over last year for the 2021 edition.

Rahm's point about how OWGR points at the top of small-field events (there were only 50 golfers playing this week in Dubai) is legitimate. And while this is not the space to get into a deep dissection of the Official World Golf Rankings, I don't believe there should be as much disparity between points allotted to the winner of an event where you have to beat seven other top 30 players and points allotted to the winner of an event where (no matter how many golfers were in the field) Brian Harman was the favorite.

Rahm wins a LOT. 2017: 3 OWGR wins 2018: 3 2019: 3 2020: 2 2021: 2 2022: 3 That's 16 in 152 total OWGR events, which is a 10.5 percent (!!) rate. You can just pencil him in for 2.5 wins a year every year. The only question is which tournaments they'll be. — Kyle Porter (@KylePorterCBS) November 20, 2022

Regardless, Rahm is not short on OWGR points. After taking the Mexico Open, Spanish Open and this event, he remains firmly in the top five in the world going into 2023 and has plenty of hype around him going into next year given how he finished this one. In each of the last six years, Rahm has won either two or three OWGR events. He is also the first player to win this particular event three times, and that touches off a run of seven events in 2022 in which his worst finish was T15 and the other six were in the top eight.

Rahm has primarily been buoyed by his putter during that stretch, a club that let him down earlier in 2022. This week in Dubai was no different as he finished second in the field in strokes gained putting en route to the victory.

"Honestly I cannot believe I shot 12 under with how badly I hit it off the tee on the weekend," Rahm said. "I was just able to manage really well. I think a lot of those times when I pitched out, my wedge game saved me. On the greens on the weekend, I don't know what my stats were. But inside 10 feet I was really, really, really solid, and that's always going to carry forward. Any time I was on the fairway, my iron game felt great.

"I stayed aggressive and picked my battles, and again, I think I shot as low as I could have shot on the weekend to get this one."

Despite the victory, Rahm fell short in the season-long DP World Tour points race where McIlroy, who came into this week ranked No. 1 on that list, went on to win. For McIlroy, it's his fourth season-long title on the European side to match three FedEx Cups on the PGA Tour. However, this year marks the first time McIlroy has won both season-long races in the same year.

"It's been seven years since I've last done it [on the DP World Tour]," McIlroy said. "Obviously this is my fourth one but it's been a while. I've won three FedEx Cups since the last time I won, which was the Race to Dubai back then.

"It means a lot. ... I was a model of consistency the whole way through the year. A lot of top finishes. I think my worst finish of the European Tour events I played this year was 12th at the start of the year in Abu Dhabi. A really consistent season putting in good performances. Would have been nice to get one win in there at the end of the year here. But Jon obviously played an incredible tournament and fully deserved it.

"[I'm] really proud of my year, and excited for 2023."

"I'm as complete a golfer as I feel like I've ever been, and hopefully I can continue on that path," he added.

Since 2011, there have been 22 total season-long points titles available on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, and McIlroy has remarkably won seven of them. He finished the year with 13 top-eight finishes in his last 16 starts worldwide.

Fleetwood and Fitzpatrick rounded out the top five in Dubai as the DP World Tour season came to a close.

How many golfers will compete at the 2024 Olympics?

There will be 120 athletes competing in the golf competition of Paris 2024, 60 in each of the men’s and women’s events, which is exactly the same amount as Tokyo 2020 .

The host nation France will secure two quota places, one per gender. The other 118 quota places (59 per gender) will be decided by the Olympic Golf Ranking (OGR).

What is the format for the 2024 Olympic golf events?

Players in both the men’s and women’s events will play a 72-hole strokeplay competition across four days, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded for each of the top three finishers.

There is no cut and in the event of a tie for any of the medals, a sudden death play-off will take place to determine the medallists.

Who are the reigning Olympic golf champions?

It was a Team USA double at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, postponed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Xander Schauffele and Nelly Korda won the gold medals, in the men's and women's competitions respectively.

In the men's competition, Rory Sabbatini (Slovakia) earned the silver with a 10-under-par 61 on the final day, while CT Pan (Chinese Tapai) came out on top of a seven-man play-off on the fourth extra hole. In the women's competition, Japan's Mone Inami claimed silver and New Zealand's Lydia Ko added a bronze medal to the silver she had won at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

When did golf return to the Olympic Games?

Golf made a long-awaited return to the Olympic Games in 2016, played in Rio for the first time in 112 years.

First introduced in Paris in 1900 with just a men's individual tournament and men's team competition, the Games then returned in 1904 in St. Louis with both a men and women's individual event. The sport was planned to be included in 2008 but was cancelled, and it would be instead a wait of over a century for them to return.

Golf officially made its return eight years ago, and will now make its fifth appearance in the Games at Paris 2024.

How do players qualify for Paris 2024?

Each event will comprise 60-player fields with golfers qualifying based on the official International Golf Federation (IGF) world ranking list published on June 17, 2024 for men and June 24, 2024 for women .

The top 15 players will all qualify automatically (maximum of four per National Olympic Committee (NOC).

Beyond the top 15, players will be eligible based on the world rankings, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top 15.

The OGR is calculated every Monday following completion of the previous week’s tournaments

Points are awarded to athletes based on their final positions in each ranking event, with performances in events with stronger fields earning more points, in accordance with a points distribution schedule approved by the IGF. The OGR is ordered according to the average points that athletes manage to accumulate over a two-year qualifying period.

Who is currently in line to qualify for Paris 2024?

As it stands, a total of 60 golfers from 32 countries are in line to qualify for the men's event at the Olympics in 2024. The USA have the most qualified players with four players inside the top ten in the OWGR.

Tiger Woods' TGL team includes top 10 player in the world, rising PGA Tour star

M ax Homa called it "a dream" to play in Tiger Woods ' group the first two days of the Masters. When asked following Friday's competition what he will remember from his round, he said just "a lot of Tiger stuff."

Now, Homa will build on those memories going forward.

Homa is joining Woods' Jupiter Links Golf Club in TGL, the interactive golf league headed by Woods and Rory McIlroy. The four-man team was announced Monday morning with Homa, Tom Kim and Kevin Kisner joining Woods.

"I have three guys on my team that I enjoy being around, that I know are going to work hard and grind as team members, can talk a little trash and will have a great time," Woods told The Palm Beach Post. "If I compete in something, I want to win."

TGL, backed by TMRW Sports, is preparing for its inaugural season, which starts Jan. 7. The league will be played in Palm Beach Gardens at a venue being built on the campus of Palm Beach State College.

Exclusive: Tiger Woods talks TGL with Palm Beach Post: 'I couldn’t be more excited for January'

TGL Golf Rosters: Jupiter Links Golf Club

Homa, 33, is No. 9 in the current world ranking. He is one of five top 10 golfers in TGL. He watched Woods make history at Augusta when the Jupiter Island resident became the first to make 24 consecutive Masters cuts. While  Woods faltered on the weekend, shooting a 10-over 82 Saturday, his highest score ever at the Masters, Homa then went on to complete his best-ever major, finishing tied for third.

"Following Tiger’s career is one of the main reasons that I became an avid golfer," said Homa, who has six PGA Tour wins. "I remember watching him win the 1997 Masters, and now getting to play alongside him has been amazing.

"It’s really exciting to call Tiger, Tom, and Kevin teammates. Thanks to TGL, I’ll be able to play with some of the best golfers in the world and bring this unique and exciting format to golf while also finding ways to connect with one of the best golf markets in the country in South Florida."

Kim, from South Korea, is one of the PGA Tour's rising stars. The 21-year-old is No. 23 in the world and has won three times on the PGA Tour along with seven international events.  His win at the 2022 Wyndham Championship made him the second-youngest winner on the PGA Tour since World War II at 20 years, 1 month, 17 days.

"It's unbelievable," Kim said. "To be a part of a team with Tiger as captain, that I've always thought of as my role model and I've looked up to and I still do, to be a part of that group ... it's really cool for me and I'm really excited for what's to come."

More: New York team in Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy TGL is four of best from Palm Beach County

Kisner, 40, has four PGA Tour wins. He most recently played with Woods during the third round of the 2022 Masters.

"TGL is a unique entertainment product with a combination of world-class golf, but also a condensed format in Prime Time TV," Woods told The Post. "With every shot broadcast, a 40-second shot clock and all players mik’ed up in a team dynamic, Kiz will not only be a valuable teammate given his talents on the course but will bring his entertaining personality and style to TGL."

Kisner believes the team has the right mix to have fun in the unique format, but also get serious when titles are on the line.

“While I know we will have a lot of fun as a team with me, Tiger, Max and Tom, I also know when Tiger’s competitive fire kicks in, we are going to be ready to play and win," he said. "This is the perfect team to bring both fun and competition together at the same time. Can’t wait.”

All six TGL teams have filled their rosters, with the exception of two slots available on the Boston and San Francisco teams. San Francisco's team officially has not been announced, but it will include the remaining players who signed with TGL.

Countdown to Paris 2024: Olympic momentum gets kick-start at Zurich Classic

Olympic Golf

Change Text Size

There’s just 100 days until the men’s golf competition opens at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, and this week’s PGA TOUR event is chalk full of Olympic hopefuls teeing it up alongside each other in the TOUR’s only team event, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

This week marks the first time this year we’ll see countrymen paired up in an exciting format. While the 72-hole Olympic golf competition will be stroke play, this week is a special one for those Olympic hopefuls – and medalists.

“I’m excited about going with a chance to win an Olympic medal. That would be something very special,” said Shane Lowry of Ireland, who will be paired up alongside Rory McIlroy at the Zurich Classic. “Ireland has not won a ridiculous amount of medals over the years, so to be able to bring a medal back to Ireland would be very cool.

“I’ve done some really cool things in golf and that would be definitely up there.”

IGF Executive Director Antony Scanlon on Golf at the Olympics | TOTT

McIlroy will be making his tournament debut after inviting Lowry to play with him during a “drunken” lunch, he said with a big laugh, after the duo celebrated their Ryder Cup victory last fall. Lowry has played the team event three times – twice with fellow Irishman Padraig Harrington.

The duo also played together at the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan, with Lowry finishing T22 and McIlroy just losing out in a playoff for the bronze medal.

“Rory – I remember he was in the playoff the last time for the bronze medal and what struck me that time was how hard he took that, how much he wanted it. It just shows how much it actually means to us,” Lowry said. “It’s going to be pretty cool to be there with one of my best friends and both of us going there. We’d be going there with hopefully genuine chances to win a medal, and that would be very cool.”

Along with McIlroy and Lowry this week at the Zurich Classic – as we inch ever closer teeing off at Le Golf National – are a handful of other teams with Olympic potential.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, who have been forces at the Zurich Classic (winning in 2022 and holding both the Four-ball and Foursomes scoring records), are currently in position to represent the United States in Paris. Schauffele, of course, is the defending gold medalist

Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala are also in the mix for the United States and they’re both in the field at the Zurich Classic, albeit with different partners – Morikawa is with Kurt Kitayama and Theegala is with Will Zalatoris.

Canadians Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin are also the current Olympic representatives for the Red-and-White, but Corey Conners (who is playing alongside fellow Canadian Taylor Pendrith at the Zurich Classic) is nipping and Hadwin’s heels. Hadwin and Conners are neck-and-neck for the second Canadian spot. Taylor and Hadwin finished second at TPC Louisiana last year.

Canadian PGA TOUR players celebrate Nick Taylor’s win

Twin brothers Nicolai and Rasmus Højgaard also are teeing it up the Zurich Classic, and while Rasmus sits 10 spots behind Thorbjørn Olesen for the second Denmark spot, there’s a chance for Rasmus to jump into Olympic qualification with a hot stretch of golf.

“With 100 days until the beginning of Olympic Golf competitions, we’re excited to see the momentum building as we approach the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games,” said International Golf Federation Executive Director Antony Scanlon.

Part of that momentum is kickstarted this week at the Zurich Classic, with a unique PGA TOUR format giving fans a chance to get a sneak peek at a few players – and duos! – who are looking to find the podium in Paris.

2022 DP World Tour Championship leaderboard, scores: Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton begin to separate

The englishmen will be difficult to catch over the final 36 holes in dubai this weekend.

DP World Tour Championship - Day Two

As was the case upon the completion of the first round, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tyrrell Hatton find themselves alongside each other at the top of the leaderboard heading into the weekend at the 2022 DP World Tour Championship. Playing in the final group in the second round, the two Ryder Cup teammates traded blows around Jumeirah Golf Estates, and ultimately signed for rounds of 5-under 67 to finish their days at 12 under for the tournament.

While Fitzpatrick was the one to shoot out of the gates on Thursday, it was Hatton's turn on Friday. Connecting on four birdies in his opening five holes, Hatton quickly opened up a three-stroke lead over his playing competitor.

"I'm pretty happy with the score. I got off to another nice start again today," said Hatton. "Hopefully the putter stays fairly hot and we have a good weekend. There's still 36 holes to play. I have a fairly good record around here. Matt [Fitzpatrick] has an excellent record around here. But, you know, we'll enjoy each other's company tomorrow and hopefully we can keep playing well."

Struggles and visible disdain ensued for the world No. 29 as three bogeys in his next seven holes allowed Fitzpatrick to claw his way back. The reigning U.S. Open champion reclaimed a share of the lead with a birdie on the par-4 15th, and pushed ahead with another on the following hole. This lead would be short-lived as Hatton converted a birdie opportunity from 20 feet on the par-3 17th before the two were able to save par on the closing par-5 18th after struggles off the tee.

"Just got to keep pushing on, just keep playing how I feel like I'm playing right now. I feel really comfortable with where my game is at, particularly after three weeks off, and looking forward to the weekend," said Fitzpatrick. "I feel like I've played two good rounds to start with and put myself in position, and I'll just keep doing more of the same and see where it gets me come Sunday."

For their efforts, the Englishmen have grown a three-stroke edge over their nearest pursuers. Former European Ryder Cup member Alex Noren stands at 9 under alongside Adri Arnaus, and a bit further back a couple big fish are waiting in the shallows. Two-time DP World Tour Championship winner Jon Rahm stands at 8 under after a splendid round of 6-under 66 while Rory McIlroy is at 5 under courtesy of a fast finish.

Round 2 leaderboard, scores

  • T1. Matt Fitzpatrick: -12
  • T1. Tyrrell Hatton: -12
  • T3. Alex Noren: -9
  • T3. Adri Arnaus: -9
  • T5. Jon Rahm: -8
  • T5. Jorge Campillo: -8
  • 6. Kurt Kitayama: -7
  • T8. Tommy Fleetwood: -6
  • T8. Rasmus Hojgaard: -6
  • T8. Min Woo Lee: -6
  • T11. Rory McIlroy: -5
  • T11. Adrian Otaegui: -5
  • T11. Richie Ramsay: -5
  • T11. Yannik Paul: -5
  • T11. Maximilian Kieffer: -5

World No. 1 may have found something

A birdie-birdie-eagle finish propelled McIlroy to a round of 4-under 68 in his second round and back into contention. Playing his first 33 holes in 1 under, the world No. 1 found himself as many as 10 strokes back. Now at 5 under, he sits in a tie for 11th and only seven adrift. McIlroy is projected to finish second in the DP World Tour Ranking after entering the week in the top spot given Fitzpatrick's presence at the top of the leaderboard.

"[It was] pretty mediocre golf for the first 33 holes, and then something sort of clicked," said McIlroy of his fast finish. "Whatever it is, I need to bottle it for the weekend. It was nice to finish with a flourish there and put myself a little closer to the guys. You never know, that finish here on Friday could be key to something that happens over the next 36 holes."

DP World Tour Championship updated odds and picks

Odds via Caesars Sportsbook

  • Matt Fitzpatrick: 8/5
  • Tyrrell Hatton: 5/2
  • Jon Rahm: 5-1
  • Rory McIlroy: 12-1
  • Alex Noren: 12-1
  • Adri Arnaus: 25-1
  • Kurt Kitayama: 30-1
  • Tommy Fleetwood: 35-1

One member of the English pair is likely to nab this title, but I can't help but look in the direction of Rahm at 5-1. Entering the week as one of the hottest players in the world, the Spaniard was able to climb his way back into this tournament with seven birdies against only one bogey. Rahm left a couple shots out there on Friday and should be in with a chance come the final nine holes on Sunday if he is able to wield the putter in the same manner as his previous five starts.
