1700 Big Air Kit

Well I'm still breaking in my 2011 Nomad 1700 and so far I've only ordered Ray's Kury Iso modified grips and GrassHoppers Driver backrest pad. But I'm looking around for Big Air solutions and I need a bit of help. First off on the bike I had before, all the big air kits were not just a filter, they were a whole new holder bracket that bolted to the directly to the OEM throttlebody and eliminated the OEM backplate and accomodated a wider filter element behind the OEM cover. With Kawa's I'm not seeing any definitive revelations. First off the filter is set going "in" to the throttlebody instead of wrapping around at right angles to it. So just replacing the filter only with say a K&N one is only going to help in as much as the K&N is less restrictive. I did see something to the effect of a "Big Air Kit" that was in the $300 range but the 1700 engine was not listed in the fitment. Appreciate any info or links you guys can throw my way. And BTW this forum has been fantastic so far and was a gigantic help in helping me to learn and feel more confident in purchasing a new Nomad.
I love that pic. Really shows the setup off and how nicely done it is. Does that kit come with the K&N?
Nothing at all against Thunder, I had their Teardrop kit on my carbed '99 Nad and it was a nice kit but in the interest of alternatives.. Chucksters got a kit setup for the stock cover configuration http://vulcanbagger.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28600 and may have or be doing a right side only setup as he did for the 1600. I guess it depends on whether you want to keep the stock look or loose the dog bowls.
Yes it does come with the K&N Filter, I have the Thunder stock cover kit on my Vaquero.
Thanks.. I thought it probably did. The Teardrop kit I had came with. Did it increase the intake noise much? Still undecided yet if I want to keep the stock setup for ease of returning to complete stock or hack out all the intake tubes and just go with a right side kit. I do like the look of Darkstar's setup.
Yes it does increase intake noise. The Thunder stock cover kit probably is a little quieter than the Thunder round kit. I have the round kit and it is definitely louder than stock.
Been running the K&N in stock box for a while. It made an improvement with slips and fuel box. Just ordered the 51010 kit today. It's the cheapest option and gets the job done. I was going to do the decorative plate route and forced air intake but the cylinder fins are not finished like on other bikes. I don't like the look even with the plate. I'm going to try and get by with my Cobra fuel box with the air kit until winter. Then I will be wrapping my pipes and adding a PCV with ignition and autotune modules using the world famous David Sheek map as a base.
Wow thanks for all the links and info. Kinda makes me wonder why I wasn't finding any of these in searches. I guess I just didn't know what the heck to look for. But yea this is what I'm used to seeing on Harley Big Air kits. 1700Classic I'd really like to hear all the prices, steps, performance gains etc when you start putting on your PC and ignition. It will be awhile yet before I do anything in that area, but could use some good info to help me decide if I really want to spend the xtra bucks over a Doebeck Setup for $200. It did wonders for my Harley, but the Harley ran pretty strong even before the Doebeck. I'm assuming you're getting maps from David so you won't need a Dyno.

bike dynoed In my opinion a dyno tune is the only way to tune a fuel injected bike. My VTX was a totally diffirent bike after the dyno tune for sure. When I get an airkit on mine it will go straight to Victory Drive Vtwin in Indianapolis to be tuned. They have made me realize the potentional of what a dyno tune can do. This is just my opinion so dont jump all over me!
I would assume if heat soak is involved that it would still be there regardless of the air temp coming into the intake due to the location of the sensor. Once the motor warms up there goes the ambient reading. (If that's the goal.) When I moved my IAT sensor it did something because I needed to adjust my FI2000R down which at least gave the perception of a harder pulling bike but my random low speed hesitation came back a bit. Still dicking with the first pot on the FI2000R. The bike performs flawlessly at about 40 mph though 80-85mph. Smooth, reliable, etc. 0-40 is a different story. When I put the thunder on this week once it gets here I would be pleased with the same results and a harder pull. Then this winter I'm putting on the PCV with ignition and autotune and will wrap the pipes while I'm at it. If that doesn't solve the world's problems nothing will.
Big Air Kit I have the RoaringTwinz air kit. Actually made by Performance Machine and RoaringTwinz makes the back plate for our bikes. Got the Thunder manufacturing dress up plate for the other side. Here they are.

If I buy the ThunderMax Big Air Kit #51010 - (Kawasaki VN 1700 - Stock Cover - No adapter required) Will I still have the option of removing the stock air box so as to let that area cool a little better ? Also I've read where some folks plug off the fresh air return and get rid of the reed valve. Is all this still possible with 51010 kit ? Or is the stock box what the left side plate mounts to ? Just wondering what my options are in that area.
Both the Chuckster and Thunder Stock Air Kits come with a plug for the single line to the Air Injection System. No-one to date makes plates to cover/block the actual Reed Valves on the heads. You can also not simply remove the Air Valve Switch without throwing an engine code. Both kits attach directly to the throttle body face so you can fully remove the left side filter housing, but some choose not to. The exposed cylinders do not have any fins and look rather bare. My experience has been that leaving the left side open does not help much, if at all.
I'm assuming the Vaquero and Voyager have temperature gauges ? I don't see any temp guage on my Nomad. Are these head temps or air temps going into the intake?
Coolant temps.
what is a rays throttle mod, and a pcv mod?
1) A simple forum subject search reveals the following concerning RACNRAY's Throttle Mod: http://www.vulcanforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19978&highlight=RACNRAY+throttle This is a highly recommended mod of the throttle grip that recams the profile for improved throttle response and eliminates the lag on stock bikes. This is perhaps the most cost-effective performance mod you can do to your 1700. (Note: If you got your bike used, make sure this has not already been done by the previous owner. If it takes a larger than normal twist of the throttle to get any output, it likely has not been done.) 2) The PCV is the Power Commander V (5) which is a fuel manager. The 1700 needs this addition (or a similar manager) if you are doing more than just new exhaust or you will run lean. The 1700 already runs lean, hence the decel popping. http://www.powercommander.com/powercommander/Products/PowerCommanderV/powercommander_v.aspx
What he said..lol i have the throttle mod..well worth it , makes cruising at low speeds a pleasure.. and when you want to hit it , its a short twist away.. high quality.. recommended.. im thinking of a pcv..
Yes remove all of the stock air box. Thunder makes a filler plate that goes on the left side. Sent from Motorcycle.com Free App
I only removed what I needed to on the right side to install the Thunder kit. Everything looks stock.
Yes it did. But there were other mods as well to help run cooler. The "Big Three" / water coolant mod/ wrapping pipes .
Dave I will be loading your map as soon as I get my PCV in 2 weeks. Heading out on a cruise and dont want the PCV sitting in my mail box for a week. I will let you know how it goes. I will be selling my EJK as soon as I get the Power Commander V up and running. Later I may have RacnRay tu e the bike on the Dyno.
Does anyone know the K&N filter number for the Thunder Kit? Thunder is out of business and I need to replace the filter, can't find the replacement number

How do I get from Moscow airports to the city center?
Moscow with its more than twelve million inhabitants has three international airports. The best known is Sheremetyevo (international abbreviation SVO), which is 35 km northwest of Red Square. Russia’s largest airline Aeroflot has its hub here. The second largest airport, Domodedovo (international abbreviation DME), is about 45 km south-east of the center, from where the S7 airline, which mainly flies within Russia, and numerous international airlines such as Lufthansa take off and land. Finally, there is the third largest airport called Moscow-Wnukovo (abbreviation VKO), which serves numerous low-cost airlines such as Pobeda and is the closest to Moscow city center at just under 30 km.
Aeroexpress to the city center
First the good news – all three airports are easy to reach, both by taxi and by public transport such as train and bus. All three airports are connected to the Moscow city center by means of the so-called Aeroexpress. The Aeroexpress is certainly the most popular and the easiest way for foreigners to get to the center of Moscow. With the striking red signs Aeroexpress, you can find the way to the express trains both at Moscow’s three major airports and at the respective departure stations.
The modern, wifi-equipped trains from the private provider have little in common with the city railway trains from the Russian capital, which still originate from the Soviet era, and run to all three airports from early morning until after midnight. The schedule varies from airport to airport and time of day. As a rule of thumb, trains go to Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo every half an hour during the day to and from the airport, while Wnukowo is only served hourly for much of the day.
The same pricing scheme applies to all three airports: at 300 rubles (around $ 4.50) for a one-way trip, the prices for the trip are significantly more expensive than regular public transport tickets in Moscow, but are still affordable. Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo are each around 35 minutes from the center, and Domodedovo Airport is 45 minutes away.
If you buy the ticket in advance or via the app, there is a 50 ruble discount, further discounts are available if you book a return trip with one ticket, which costs 600 rubles (around $ 8.50). When it comes to value for money, the Aeroexpress trains are certainly the best option as a solo traveler. Especially since bypassing the often treacherous Moscow traffic – in the rush hour a drive by car can take an hour longer than previously estimated.
The biggest disadvantage is that you can of course not go directly to the desired destination within Moscow. However, all three Aeroexpress trains take you to one of the major Moscow train stations, which in turn are connected to the ring line of the Moscow Metro, from where you can quickly reach all corners of the center of Moscow.
Transport connections
- Sheremetyevo Airport -> Belorussky Vokzal (journey time 35 minutes)
- Domodedovo -> Paveletsky Vokzal (journey time 45 minutes)
- Wnukowo -> Kiewsky Vokzal (travel time 35 minutes)
Prices (apply to all three airports in the city and to the airport):
- One-way ticket at the counter = 300 rubles
- Online ticket = 300 rubles
- Round trip = 600 rubles
- Tickets for 10 trips = 2,300 rubles
- Ticket Business Class = 800 rubles

In the city or to the airport by taxi app
Alternatively, the transport from and to the airport can also be regulated using the taxi app. Yandex-Taxi and Gett are the two most popular providers in Moscow. At Yandex the flat rate to all three international airports currently costs 1100 rubles ($ 16) and at Gett even only 950 rubles ($ 14) in the cheapest variant, with a small car of the size VW Polo or Ford Focus.
Unless you want to go to the airport with too much luggage or with more than two people, this is certainly the easiest method. Moderate surcharges are required for larger vehicle categories. Without knowledge of Russian, however, it would be much easier to get to the airport by taxi app than from the airport to the city. Due to the confusing location in front of the three major airports, it may be necessary to contact the driver by phone to find the right vehicle. Because the GPS signal of the respective app only gives the location with an accuracy of about ten to fifteen meters – with several lanes running side by side in front of the terminal and dozens of waiting passengers and arriving taxis, it is certainly not always easy to find yourself straight away.
If you are still dependent on the WiFi of the airport building and therefore must not move too far from the entrance, the whole thing could prove to be difficult. From the city to the airport, however, the taxi app without knowledge of Russian proves to be the much easier method. The hotel or AirBnB address can be entered as the pick-up location, and a taxi can usually be ordered within a few minutes.
Moscow trip planned? Here you can find out how to get the necessary visa! !
With the classic taxi into the city
If you want to drive into the city by regular taxi, you have to expect considerable additional costs. The website of Domodedovo airport gives 2,000 rubles as a guide for a trip to the center, i.e. just $ 28. Trips to and from Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo should be a little cheaper. As with the taxi apps, the following also applies here: Especially at rush hour, you should probably prefer the train because Moscow’s streets burst at the seams in the after-hours traffic.
Bus metro combination
For experienced travelers to Russia or visitors with a particularly tight budget, there is still the option of all three airports to get to the nearest metro station by bus or Marshrutka (mini-bus with a fixed route but flexible stops).
From Vnukowo, for example, the 45M minibus line goes to the Yugo-Zapadnaya metro station on the red line № 1 of the Moscow Metro, for just 150 rubles. Together with the 62 rubles ticket for the metro, you can get into the city for just over $ 3.
Sheremetyevo Airport can be reached from the Rechnoy Vokzal metro station on Marshrutka line 949 for 80 rubles, or from Planernaya metro station with Marshrutka 948 for 80 rubles ($ 1.1). The minibuses run approximately every 15 minutes. Domodedovo Airport is connected by express bus to the metro station of the same name every half hour. The fare here is 150 rubles (a good 2,1 $). However, complications must be expected with this transport route – the bus drivers in Moscow usually only speak Russian. Taking the metro or minibuses with luggage is not always comfortable. However, you can save money, especially as a solo traveler.

Kuznetski Most area in Moscow
Kuznetski Most is a small area between Tverskaya street, Kremlin, and Kitai Gorod (Lubyanka) and it's a downtown of Moscow. First of all, 'Kuznya' is a great place to walk: it is a real Moscow area, not a postcard at all, hectic busy streets neighbour tranquil lanes and courtyards with traditional architecture. There are also many very nice cafes, restaurants, clubs, and shops. If you want a cool place to meet people, go for a walk and to get the real feeling of the city, check out this area.
Long time ago there were only half-broken low wooden houses in Kuznetski Most area, and it was the place where poor blacksmithes lived. Blacksmith is 'Kuznets' in Russia, hence the name. In the beginning of the street (on top) there was a bridge over a small river, later this river was put underground, so there's no bridge anymore. About 200 years ago there was a rich Moscovitan noble buying this area. He immediately put away all the blacksmiths' houses and started to build a fancy new district. Just in few years he built up beautiful houses, with impressive ornaments, rich decoration, pools in the courtyards. Also, he opened some French boutiques in the area. That's when Kuznetski Most started to become fashionable. In a short time all the elite moved to this area, and those who wasn't so fast were coming here to make some shopping and to sit in many of the restaurants and cafes around. In the 20th century, when the communist times arrived, most of the buildings were given to government offices, some were given to soviet shops. The area became boring, the architecture was slowly deteriorating , but nobody seemed to care. In the beginning of the 90s the area was revived again: the buildings were restored , there was many new cafes being opened, boutiques, and shops. One important landmark of Kuznetsky Most is that it's home to FSB (Federal Security Bureau - former KGB) offices, and if you walk along Kuznetsky Most street you can get to the FSB reception, which is open 24 hours (in case you have something to report).
