Service center hours, change your store, final farewell: 2019 volkswagen beetle final edition test drive.

2019 vw beetle safari uni

The Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most recognized cars on the planet, but come July, global production of this iconic hatchback is coming to an end. This is no surprise as VW has already announced its plans to phase out this car, and the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition offers one final tribute to the Beetle's 81-year history.

The original Beetle was built from 1938 through 2003, and the torch was later passed to successors like the (1998-2010) New Beetle and the current Beetle, which was introduced for the 2012 model. VW has no plans to replace the Beetle, but there's still a chance that the Beetle name could be revived for an electric vehicle similar to the I.D. Buggy Concept. For now, though, we say our final farewell to this beloved car with a week in the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition SE.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Exterior

While it will be sad to see the Beetle, it's amazing this retro-style compact even made it to a redesign in the first place. Most vehicles sporting a throwback design (Chevrolet HHR, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Ford Thunderbird, etc.) only survive for a single generation, but the third-generation Beetle was a huge improvement over the New Beetle and harnessed a similar spirit as the original car. The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition isn't a huge departure from the standard model, but it does swap out the rear "turbo" badge for "Beetle," and the color palette is limited to just five colors including two that are exclusive to the Final Edition: Stonewashed Blue (similar to the light blue used on denim-themed special editions from 1970 and 2016) and this tester's Safari Uni (a nod to the Harvest Moon Beige hue used on the New Beetle). This model looks good with the 17-inch, 15-spoke alloy wheels, but opting for the Final Edition SEL adds even more style to this Beetle with a more retro 18-inch wheel design that features a chrome, dog-dish style center and white accents.

2019 vw beetle safari uni

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Interior

As a contrast to the retro exterior design, the interior of the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle offers almost all of the amenities of any other modern Volkswagen. The Final Edition comes standard with Volkswagen's MIB II infotainment system, which features a 6.3-inch touch screen display with capacitive-touch controls (similar to smartphones and tablets. Unlike most other touch screen displays on the market allows for gesture controls such as swiping and even pinch-zooming. Car-Net App-Connect is also standard on the Final Edition models bringing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Regardless of exterior color or trim level, all 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition models get a unique Safari Uni color dash pad as well as the “Beetle bin” adding a little extra storage to the cabin with this secondary glovebox. The flat-bottomed, leather-wrapped steering wheel gets the same Beetle logo as the exterior, while other Final Edition features include keyless access with push-button start, cloth seating surfaces with leatherette inserts, heated seats, three-color ambient lighting, dual-zone Climatronic climate controls, stainless steel pedal caps and metal scuff plates.

Unlike the boxier Golf off which the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle is based, the rounded lines of this car result in a smaller interior that is limited to just four passengers. That being said, the Beetle feels roomier and more passenger friendly than style-driven small cars like Fiat 500 and Mini Cooper. Rear space is best suited for kids, but there is enough legroom and headroom to fit adults back there in a pinch. With the rear seats up, the Beetle can hold 15.4 cubic feet, and folding the rear seat backs down (not completely flat) opens up 29.9 cubic feet. A standard compact will offer better passenger and cargo space, but the stylish Volkswagen Beetle is truly one of a kind.

2019 vw beetle safari uni

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Powertrain

Compared to the original Beetle's 995-cc (.995-liter) air-cooled flat-four engine rated at 25 horsepower, the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder. This engine was introduced for the 2018 model year as an upgrade to the previous 1.8-liter turbo engine, and it packs 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. While this is just 4 extra horsepower over the previous engine, it does bring a 2 mpg improvement in city driving with official EPA-rated fuel economy estimates of 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway*. Unlike the previous Beetle R-Line, the 2019 Beetle is only available with a six-speed automatic transmission; sorry, no more manual gearbox!

Aside from the obvious styling changes, the Final Edition doesn't come with any added performance or handling upgrades. While that might seem like a bad thing, the Beetle is essentially a stylized version of the current VW Golf, so the ride quality is exactly what we've come to expect from VW's sporty compact hatchback with an enjoyable steering and suspension setup. The Beetle, like many other affordable compacts, isn't necessarily fast, but it sure is fun to drive.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Safety

The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle has not been fully tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but the Coupe has received a four-star rating for frontal impact protection. For optimal safety, all Beetle trim levels come standard with Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and Intelligent Crash Response System. The only safety feature not standard on the 2019 Beetle is Park Distance Control, which is standard on the Final Edition SEL and optional on the SE Premium Package.

2019 vw beetle safari uni

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Overall

After 81 years (including 70 years in the United States), the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition is a fitting sendoff for this fun-loving cultural icon of a car. Not only did this car define a generation, but it also helped bring back some peace, love and happiness to drivers in the last 21 years since its retro revival.

Saying farewell to the Beetle won't be a costly affair as this stylish compact has a base MSRP of just $20,895**. The Final Edition starts at $23,045** for this SE trim level, and there are no option packages available resulting in an as-tested price of $23,940. On top of that, the Beetle also comes with the added peace of mind of a six-year/72,000-mile basic warranty.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle review: The last goodbye

The Volkswagen Beetle will get the axe at the end of this year, so we take the Final Edition Convertible out for one last spin.

2019 vw beetle safari uni

Though this Volkswagen Beetle is called the Final Edition, it isn't the first time the model has disappeared. The original, air-cooled version stopped production in other markets in 2003, commemorated with the Última Edición. But this marks the end of the new Beetle , and if I'm honest, I'll miss it.

2019 vw beetle safari uni

2019 Volkswagen Beetle

The bottom line, turbocharged and topless.

You can buy the Final Edition Beetle as a coupe or convertible, powered by a 2.0-liter, turbocharged I4 engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Final Edition models get their own special colors reminiscent of hues offered on the aforementioned Última Edición, called Safari Uni and Stonewashed Blue. Other Final Edition touches include diamond-stitched leather seats, metal scuff plates, stainless-steel pedals, unique wheels and a Safari Uni-colored dash panel.

If the Final Edition isn't your jam, the Beetle is still offered in S and SE guises for 2019, again powered by the 2.0T/6-speed auto combo.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition

The Final Edition can be had with some pretty sweet 18-inch wheels.

Behind the wheel, the Beetle is enjoyable to drive. The turbo engine pushes out 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, which aren't whack-a-doo numbers, but provide adequate motivation for zipping through traffic. The suspension is too softly sprung to make the Beetle an engaging canyon-carver, and the transmission is tuned for efficiency first and sportiness second. But when I drop the top and put my foot down, the Beetle rewards with an easygoing, pleasant driving experience.

Blind-spot monitoring is standard, and is helpful when the canvas top is up, closing off a good chunk of your rear-side view. If you're looking for other driving aids, however, you're out of luck. Given the car's age, it doesn't get any modern tech like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist or anything else.

So-so tech and comfort

Cabin tech is surprisingly robust, with my Final Edition SEL model packing a 6.3-inch infotainment screen with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto . (The base Beetle, meanwhile, has a 5-inch screen that lacks these amenities.) VW's Discover Media interface is uncomplicated, with large tiles on the display and plenty of redundant buttons around the outside of the screen. Only one USB port is available, however, so passengers will have to keep their smartphones charged via the 12-volt outlets available up front and in back.

With the top up, the Beetle's cabin is pretty quiet -- better than what I originally expected. The top folds back in less than 10 seconds, and can be operated at speeds up to 31 miles per hour. Even with the top back, wind buffeting is kept to a minimum, and I'm able to easily have a phone conversation over Bluetooth with the top down.

The last hurrah of the Volkswagen Beetle

2019 vw beetle safari uni

I like the comfy, leather seats, and generally find the Beetle's interior a nice place to spend time. There's a lot of hard plastic throughout, but the main touch points feel perfectly fine. The Safari Uni-colored dash panel harkens back to the metal dash of the old VW Bug, complete with the secondary "käeferfach" glovebox.

Where the Beetle Convertible suffers is in cargo room. The Beetle Coupe offers 15.4 cubic feet of space in its trunk, which drops to a measly 7.1 in the Convertible. But hey, at least the back seats fold flat so you can get a little more utility for longer items.

Time to say goodbye

While 2019 VW Beetle pricing starts at $20,895 for the coupe, the Final Edition is a bit more expensive. The Final Edition SE Coupe starts at $23,045, and stepping up to the SEL Coupe will set you back $25,995. If it's top-down time you're after, the Final Edition SE Convertible comes in at $27,295, while the SEL you see here starts at $29,995, not including $895 for destination. At least the SEL gets you things like LED lighting and an upgraded Fender audio system.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition

The Beetle's dash is reminiscent of the metal dashboard of the old air-cooled bugs.

The trouble with the Beetle is that there are plenty of other small runabouts that offer a better driving experience. It's hard to argue against the greatness of the Mazda MX-5 Miata or its Fiat 124 Spider counterpart. On the hardtop front, there's always the Fiat 500 Abarth , or the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 twins. In all of these cases, I can't really imagine picking the Beetle.

Still, there's something about the Beetle that tugs at my heartstrings. This little guy has been a near constant throughout my life -- I even raced the Baja 1000 in a stock 1969 Beetle. It's been rumored the Beetle could return again someday, possibly with electric power . Consider my fingers crossed.

2019 volkswagen beetle final edition: review.

Endearing and Enduring It seems as if the Volkswagen Beetle has been around forever — likely because it has been one of the longest running nameplates in automotive history. We say “has been” because the last of the third-generation Beetle rolled off the assembly line in early July, ending more than 60 years of Beetles in America. Since this was the final year for the much-loved Bug, Volkswagen created a Final Edition, and we spent a few days with this special version to say our good-byes. Although it was nearly a tearful farewell, take heart. True icons never leave us. So as we take a look at this final version of the people’s car, let’s also take a fond look back at Beetles over the last 60 years.

© Perry Stern, Automotive Content Experience

Final Edition Our last Beetle drive was in a 2019 Volkswagen Beetle 2.0T Final Edition SE, painted in Safari Uni with an attractive beige and black interior. The Final Edition comes well equipped with standard features, so this particular vehicle has no factory options — total MSRP is $23,940.

© Perry Stern, Automotive Content Experience

Beige or Blue The Final Edition is available in Safari Uni (our test vehicle) or Stonewashed Blue — matching the beige and blue colors available on the 2003 Última Edición — the last version of what most folks consider the classic Beetle.

© Volkswagen of America

Classic Design There’s no mistaking the Beetle for anything else on the road. Although it became a bit sleeker during its last redesign, the Bug retains its rounded fenders and recognizable roofline that curves from the top of the windshield to the base of the rear bumper.

© Perry Stern, Automotive Content Experience

Happy Look The front view of the car is the most classic: with its circular headlights and happy-looking fascia, a playful wink from a headlight would not be all that surprising. Granted, Safari Uni is not the most exciting color, although it does present the car nicely in sunlight.

© Perry Stern, Automotive Content Experience

Clean Interior Two-tone treatment inside gives the Beetle an upscale, modern feel with dual colors on the seats as well on the door and dash trim. The dashboard matches the exterior color and material, and dual glove boxes offer plenty of room for storage. Integrated into the dash center is VW’s latest touchscreen display, with hard buttons on either side of the unit for easy, intuitive navigation. The HVAC system has a separate set of controls for quick access.

© Perry Stern, Automotive Content Experience

Useful Rear Seat The Beetle Final Edition has easy access to the rear seat since the front seats slide fully forward within the wide door opening. And since there are only two seats in the rear area, the space feels comfortable for a 2-door, with reasonable legroom and headroom.

© Perry Stern, Automotive Content Experience

Large Rear Hatch Thanks to its wide opening, the Beetle’s rear hatch has a decent amount of cargo space. Rear seats can be easily folded, adding to the car’s overall utility.

© Perry Stern, Automotive Content Experience

Performance For the final year of production, all Beetles are equipped with VW’s 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Although we would prefer a manual, the automatic works fine. This final Beetle offers good performance, and never feels lacking for power. Respectable fuel economy is an added bonus — the Beetle is rated at 26 mpg city / 33 mpg hwy / 29 mpg combined, which is on par with what we saw during our drive.

© Perry Stern, Automotive Content Experience

On the Road In a twist of fate, the Beetle’s recent demise is a lesson in bad timing, since this is one of the most refined versions we’ve driven. The ride feels solid and comfortable, and quick acceleration makes the Bug feel almost sporty. Although we didn’t get much chance to push the Beetle on any winding backroads, the steering feels precise, brake feel is decent and overall the Bug makes a great everyday car.

© Perry Stern, Automotive Content Experience

Is It Really the End? “The loss of the Beetle after three generations, over nearly seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle’s many devoted fans,” said President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America Hendrich J. Woebcken. “As we move to being a full-line, family-focused automaker in the U.S. and ramp up our electrification strategy with the MEB platform, there are no immediate plans to replace it. But as we have seen with the I.D. BUZZ — which is the modern and practical interpretation of the legendary Bus — I would also say, ‘Never say never.’”

© Volkswagen of America

Rating: 8.5 While the Beetle’s underpinnings and driving dynamics are not much different than the VW Golf, the styling really makes this car stand out. With iconic looks that blend with a comfortable and usable interior and fun-to-drive qualities, the Beetle certainly makes a statement while still working as a daily driver. With the Beetle officially at its end, perhaps this is the time to pick up a Final Edition — there won’t be another chance to own a VW Bug . . . for now.

Congrats! Hope you enjoy it for years to come. Sent from my LM-V350 using Tapatalk

Beautiful! Great car! Congratulations!

2019 vw beetle safari uni

Congrats! Beauty! I saw the same model recently while visiting a dealer in Idaho. I loved the spoiler and interior appointments. And I wander what it's next reincarnation will look like...electric for sure.

looks great! can you upload some photos from the interior?

My wife has had two beetle convertibles out of four. She decided against it this time, as Winter plays havoc here with the windows and their ability to roll-up into the top effectively on some of the coldest days. We found we just didn't use it as much and on the really hot days she would never use it. But I can see it FLA. I will post some pics of the interior. Good luck with yours. Sounds nice.

I like the seats, very nice treatment. I wouldn't have a convert in the northern part of US either. We are in FL in the winter which is great convert weather, Very little rain and temps from 65-80 most of the time. It's a fun drive.

First Drive: 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition

Celebrating the end of the latest Beetle era with a whisper

Eleonor Segura Writer Nov 16, 2018

2019 vw beetle safari uni

See All 90 Photos

PUEBLA, Mexico — As I'm writing this, there's a question lingering in my mind: Why didn't Volkswagen go out with a bang by creating a truly special homage to the classic Beetle as a way of properly saying auf wiedersehen to one of its most treasured nameplates? Instead, it's sending the Bug off with a whisper in the form of the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition.

This isn't the first time Volkswagen has produced a final edition Beetle for North America. A few years after introducing the New Beetle in 1998, production of the last of the air-cooled Bugs was marked by an " Última Edición " Beetle in Mexico. Then in 2009, Volkswagen revealed the 2010 New Beetle Final Edition at the Los Angeles auto show. But that wasn't the end of the line for the modern interpretation of VW's famed model thanks to the arrival of the current generation Beetle for the 2012 model year.

2019 vw beetle safari uni

So is this the final Final Edition Beetle? Volkswagen has indicated as such, although according to the rumor mill an electrified Bug may be in the offing. One thing's for sure, given its steady sales decline it's clear that the Beetle will need to be completely reimagined if in fact VW does decide to revive it once again.

As production of the present generation Beetle starts to wind down, Volkswagen had us out to the factory where it builds them in Puebla during Mexico's Día de Muertos celebrations for a drive of the Final Edition models and a little celebration of its own. Appropriate, given that the Beetle will be muertos as of next summer.

But before I dive into my analysis of the 2019 Beetle Final Edition, I'd like to share some trivia with you:

2019 vw beetle safari uni

When the Volkswagen Beetle was first introduced in Germany in 1938, it was almost called the "strength through joy" car, but later became known as "the people's car." Upon receiving a contract from Hitler to build a low-cost vehicle, Ferdinand Porsche designed the Beetle after the Tatra 97 , which he was sued for and later settled. More than 20 million copies of the air-cooled, 1938-2003 Beetle model were sold worldwide—making it the most manufactured single design car of all time.

If thou shall ever make it to Jeopardy and any of this information deems to be helpful in winning a huge load of cash, don't forget about yours truly.

Find a car near you

Alright, back to the review. For starters, the 2019 Final Edition Beetle is available in two trims: Final Edition SE and Final Edition SEL, and you can get it in either coupe or convertible flavors. Pop the hood and you'll find a 2.0-liter turbo engine with 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque that powers the Beetle lineup, mated to six-speed automatic transmission. The combination helps the car post solid EPA numbers of 26/33/29 mpg (city/highway/combined). A manual transmission option would've made the Beetle Final Edition a more thrilling proposition, but sadly those days are long gone.

The Final Edition SEL convertible, priced at $30,690 with destination, is the most expensive trim in the Beetle lineup. It features a premium package most other Beetle buyers will need to pony up $2,500 for that adds a Fender premium audio system, 6.3-inch touchscreen with navigation, Volkswagen Car-Net, Bi-Xenon headlights, and Nappa leather seats. But the best part of the package is its set of sweet, retro-style 18-inch wheels with white accents that add some personality.

2019 vw beetle safari uni

Aesthetically speaking, other than the available rims, what makes the 2019 Final Edition Beetle more desirable than the rest of the Beetle lineup? Not a whole lot, unfortunately. Just for kicks I did a side-by-side comparison with a 2018 Beetle Coast model I drove earlier this year and they're almost identical. That said, there are a few unique exterior touches, including a Beetle badge which replaces the Turbo badge on the rear deck. There are also two colors exclusive to the Final Edition models that were inspired by the Última Edición: Stonewashed Blue Metallic and Safari Uni.

2019 vw beetle safari uni

Inside, Final Edition refinements include a high-gloss black center console, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with an added "Beetle" badge, and stainless-steel pedal caps. To set the right mood at night there are three ambient lighting colors to choose from. Final Edition SEL models get the aforementioned, more upscale Diamond-stitched Nappa leather seats, though the Rhombus-pattern cloth and leatherette seats in the Final Edition SE are arguably as attractive. Final Edition SE trims and above also get a neat, throwback style glovebox known as the "Beetle bin," with an upward folding lid. Safety features standard on all Beetles include blind spot monitor, rear traffic alert, rearview camera, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Out on the streets of Puebla, I sampled a Final Edition SE convertible and a Final Edition SEL coupe, but spent most of my time behind the wheel of the convertible.

2019 vw beetle safari uni

As expected, the humble Beetle managed to keep up with the unforgiving drivers of Puebla and it survived the ever-changing road surfaces like a champ. In all seriousness, I invested more time dodging other drivers, which in my eyes is the ultimate driving test. Given that the Beetle is manufactured in Mexico, the friendly Bug was socially compatible with the rest of its family members on the road.

There's no point in driving a convertible with a top that goes down in 9.5 seconds if you aren't going to put it to good use. The weather in Mexico was optimal for afternoon drive you better believe I had the top down the entire time.

Out on the highway I punched the gas pedal and felt like a million bucks thanks to the Beetle's lively turbo four. And although I normally dislike most modern convertibles, feeling the wind in my face at highway speeds was exhilarating. Rocking my favorite hat and a decent pair of Warby Parker sunglasses made the experience all the more enjoyable.

2019 vw beetle safari uni

But as fun as the convertible proved to be, if I were closing in on a purchase of a 2019 Beetle, I'd go for the Final Edition SEL coupe in Stonewashed Blue Metallic with the premium package for $26,890.

The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition has premium qualities and is still an economical choice. And although I believe Volkswagen could have done much more with this Final Edition, I forgive them because all in all, the Beetle is a fun car to drive and perfect for a weekend road trip to Baja California.

VW Sends Off the Beetle with Final Edition Coupes and Convertibles

The Beetle is dead! Long live the Beetle!

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition

It comes in the form of the 2019 Beetle SE and SEL Final Editions, themselves informed by the Ultima Edición cars built for the Mexican market when the last air-cooled examples rolled off the Puebla assembly line in 2003. Like its characterful rear-engined forebears of 15 years ago, the Final Edition Beetle coupes will come in just two colors, Safari Uni and Stonewashed Blue. These hues are a nod to the beige and light-blue colors spec'd for the Ultima Edición cars, as well as callbacks to the 2016 Beetle Denim and the New Beetle 's Harvest Moon Beige. Opt for a convertible and the palette broadens to all current Beetle shades, save for Safari Uni. The cabriolets will also offer a brown softtop.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition rear

Final Edition coupes receive chrome accents, body-color side mirrors, heated washer nozzles, and a sunroof, while SELs add xenon headlights and LED DRLs, LED taillights, and fog lights. The SE cars will roll on 17-inch, 15-spoke aluminum wheels, and SELs receive 18-inch white aluminum wheels with chrome hubcaps meant to evoke the air-cooled Beetle's old steelies.

Under the hood, all Final Edition cars feature VW's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, tuned for 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque and rated by the EPA to travel 26 miles per gallon of gasoline in the city, 33 on the highway, and 29 combined. A six-speed automatic is the only transmission available.

Inside, the Final Edition Beetles get special interior appointments consisting of cloth and leatherette with rhomboid seat embroidery on the SE and diamond-stitched leather on the SEL. All models get a leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless entry and pushbutton start, automatic climate control, a gloss-black center console, a Safari Uni–colored dash pad, and three-color ambient lighting. The SE gets a 6.3-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, a USB port, SiriusXM radio, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the SEL gets a more capable infotainment system with built-in navigation.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition interior

Production of the Beetle is set to end at the Puebla factory in July 2019, bringing what some at VW feel is but a temporary end to the seminal nameplate's run. With VW focused on becoming more of a mainstream player in the U.S. market with vehicles such as the Tiguan and Atlas SUVs, there's little time for funky niche products. But according to Volkswagen Group of America President and CEO Hinrich Woebcken, "There are no immediate plans to replace [the Beetle]. But as we have seen with the I.D. BUZZ—which is the modern and practical interpretation of the legendary Bus—I would also say, 'Never say never.'" Which likely means that the next time we see a revived Beetle on our shores, it'll carry an electric powertrain.

Final Edition coupes start at $23,940 for the SE model and $26,890 for the SEL, while the SE convertible will begin at $28,190 and the SEL convertible starts at $30,890.

Headshot of Davey G. Johnson

Davey G. Johnson has been writing about the machines that move us since 2001. His first automobile was an El Camino, his first motorcycle a Guzzi, and his first sports car a Porsche, informing his admittedly fungible belief that one should haul American, drive German, and ride Italian.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition: The Bug Finally Gets Squashed

A new variant joins the Beetle’s lineup for 2019 as Volkswagen winds down production of its most iconic model.

Volkswagen News photo

Year, Make, Model: 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition

Topline: Volkswagen has announced that it will end production of the iconic Beetle in 2019, and will send off its first and most famous car with a special model variant called the Beetle Final Edition.

What's New: In addition to being the last version of the Beetle (for now), the 2019 Beetle Final Edition is a throwback to the Beetle Última Edición (last edition) from 2003, a car that marked the end of the classic Beetle's production in Mexico. Like the Última Edición, the Beetle Final Edition is available in two unique colors; Safari Uni Beige and Stonewashed Blue, both tributes to past Bug paint jobs. For the non-nostalgic, the car also comes in Platinum Grey, Pure White, and Deep Black Pearl.

Última Edición-inspired features include chrome exterior accents and unique wheel styles. Other odd touches include a "Beetle" badge where the usual "Turbo" badge should be on the rear, as well as three-color ambient lighting, and a classic "kaeferfach" (beetle bin) dual glove box if you option your Final Edition in Safari Uni Beige.

message-editor%2F1536868824871-2019_beetle_convertible_final_edition-large-8697.jpg

The Beetle Final Edition comes in two trim levels, the SE and SEL. The SE models receive cloth and leatherette seats, 17-inch wheels, Blind Spot Monitor Rear Traffic Alert, and a Composition Media infotainment system with Bluetooth, Voice Control, and VW Car-Net smartphone integration. The SEL models add Bi-Xenon headlights and LED tail lights, diamond-stitched leather seats, 18-inch wheels, Park Distance Control, and a Discover Media system with navigation and Fender premium audio.

The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition SE coupe will start at $23,045 while the SE convertible begins at $27,295. The SEL coupe and convertible will retail for $25,995 and $29,995 respectively.

message-editor%2F1536868808947-2019_beetle_final_edition-large-8693.jpg

Quotable: “The loss of the Beetle after three generations, over nearly seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle’s many devoted fans,” said Hinrich J. Woebcken, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “As we move to being a full-line, family-focused automaker in the U.S. and ramp up our electrification strategy with the MEB platform, there are no immediate plans to replace it. But as we have seen with the I.D. BUZZ—which is the modern and practical interpretation of the legendary Bus—I would also say, ‘Never say never.’ We’re excited to kick off a year of celebrating one of the true icons of the automotive world, with a series of events that will culminate in the end of production in Puebla in July 2019.”

message-editor%2F1536868873579-2019_beetle_convertible_final_edition-small-8698.jpg

What You Need to Know: Performance across the Beetle model range remains constant, so the Final Edition will still be powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder TSI engine bumping out 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

It'd be wrong to say that the Beetle's 80-year reign is officially over, but for now the future of one of the most recognizable cars on the planet is uncertain. An electric, rear-wheel drive Bug ready to join Volkswagen's upcoming I.D. range might not be out of the question.

Saying Goodbye to Beetle: Why We Loved the Beetle Final Edition

May 10, 2022

It was 1949 and the U.S. was puzzled.

What, exactly, was this car that Volkswagen had shipped here?

That car, of course, was the Beetle, which cut a distinctive silhouette on the automotive scene. Throughout its history, the Beetle has been an innovative design , a  counterculture symbol , starred in Hollywood films, and won races. No matter where or when it appeared, the body and design of the “Bug” has always been instantly recognizable.

Two men stand in front of an early model of the Volkswagen Beetle.

To celebrate the heritage of the Beetle, two special models — the Final Edition SE and Final Edition SEL — were produced for the final-year lineup in 2019. Both were available in coupe and convertible body styles and featured exclusive equipment, unique décor, and heritage-inspired exterior colors.

Classic Colors

When it was produced in 2003, the Beetle Última Edición — which marked the worldwide end of the first-generation Beetle — came in beige and light blue. The Beetle Final Edition models echoed those hues with Safari Uni and Stonewashed Blue Metallic.

Enthusiasts recognized Stonewashed Blue Metallic, which was a nod to the 1970 Jeans Bug and most recently seen on the 2016 Beetle Denim. The Safari Uni was a new twist on the Harvest Moon Beige color from the New Beetle generation. The Final Edition models also came in Pure White, Deep Black Pearl, and Platinum Grey Metallic.

Two Volkswagen Beetles produced in Mexico side by side showing rear 3/4 and front 3/4 views.

Inside the Final Edition SE models were unique cloth and leatherette rhombus-pattern seats while SEL models featured standard diamond-stitched leather seating surfaces.

Rethinking the Wheels

“A new set of wheels” is more than just an expression: Both Final Edition models featured unique wheel designs. The Final Edition SE models came with 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with a 15-spoke design .

Final Edition SEL models sported 18-inch white aluminum-alloy wheels in a disc design , reminiscent of the Última Edición whitewall tires.

Performance, Of Course

While the Final Edition models included a number of new touches, performance remained constant—both trims were powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder TSI® engine with 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, mated with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Delightful Details

No corner of the Beetle Final Edition was overlooked.

The inside featured a Safari Uni color dashpad with heritage-inspired  Käferfach  glovebox or “Beetle bin”, a gloss-black center console, and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with unique “Beetle” clip.

Outside, stainless-steel pedal caps and a tailgate “Beetle” badge completed the look.

More Beetle price and availability information

In the course of 25 years at Consumer Guide, I’ve sampled a staggering number of cars and trucks. One subset of that considerable group consists of hot, new things that were, in their times, expected to stand the motoring world on its ear. When you’re driving something like that you know it. It doesn’t take long to pick up on the curiosity of other drivers or pedestrians who may be getting their first look at something they might not even have heard about before. You see the craned necks; you hear the “Hey, what is that?” catcalls; you are invited into impromptu chats through open windows while snaking along in traffic.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Final Edition SEL in Platinum Gray

Because such instances are rare, memories of them bob like buoys on the vast sea of test vehicles. The champion attention-getter I drove in that quarter century was the 1997 Plymouth Prowler retro hot rod. A close second was the Volkswagen New Beetle. When it came out for 1998, it spurred memories of long-gone air-cooled “Bugs” within middle-aged drivers and stirred the imaginations of younger motorists, some of whom might not have been born when U.S. sales of the original rear-engine type ended. In 2012 VW updated the Beetle (now minus the “New”) with a profile that was less “fun with shapes” art project and more representative of the revered ancestor. It gave the car a new lease on life that is, at last, at its end.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Final Edition SEL in Platinum Gray

Volkswagen is Bugging out on its winsome coupe and convertible at the end of the 2019 model year. In preparation, the lineup has been trimmed to S, SE, and SEL models in both body styles, but to mark the passing, there are “Final Edition” versions of the SE and SEL. Indeed, SELs like the convertible that Consumer Guide tested only come in Final Edition trim.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Final Edition SEL in Platinum Gray

Final Editions are available in a choice of five paint colors, but two of them—Stonewashed Blue Metallic and tan Safari Uni—are exclusive to the commemoratives. In the case of convertibles, certain color combinations of top fabric and paint are only found on Finals; the pairing of Beige top over Platinum Gray Metallic body on CG’s test car was one of these. Other distinctions are specific seat designs and enhanced complements of standard equipment. The SEL boasts leather seats with a diamond-stitched pattern on the cushions and seat backs, LED taillights, Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, 18-inch white alloy wheels, and a 6.3-inch touchscreen navigation system.

Other significant standard items are a rear spoiler, body-color heated power side mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated windshield-washer nozzles, and automatic headlights. Interior highlights run to dual-zone automatic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob, heated front seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, keyless entry and starting, Safari Uni-painted dash pad, gloss-black center-console surface, and 3-color ambient lighting. Included safety and convenience technologies are parking sensors, cruise control, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, Fender premium audio system with CD player and satellite radio, SD memory-card reader, USB port, Bluetooth phone and audio-streaming capability, and Volkswagen Car-Net telematics.

Motivation comes from the turbocharged 174-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission that became the Beetle powerteam in 2018. With commendable throttle response and a maximum 184 lb-ft of torque that’s reached at a low 1500 rpm, the engine provides decent go off the line and easily keeps up with highway traffic. The transmission kicks down promptly, and shifts can, in the estimation of one of our editors, border on being a bit “jerky.” As for fuel economy, the EPA estimates the Beetle will attain 26 mpg in the city, 33 mpg in highway operation, and 29 combined. When this reviewer put 212 miles on the car, 55 percent of which was in city-type driving, he recorded a sound 31.6 mpg.

There’s a nice blend of ride and handling qualities from the compliant fully independent suspension and variable-assist electromechanical power steering. The convertible body stoutly resists flexing and rattles, and with the top up (the only way we could drive it in Chicago’s not-spring-yet weather), the Beetle soft top does an impressive job of filtering out traffic noise.

Passenger and cargo accommodations are what they have been since the 2012 revamp. That is to say:

Volkswagen Beetle Wheels

  • Comfortable front seats provide good support, but the rear seat backs are too upright for long-distance comfort. Rear legroom is in short supply, especially if front passengers need to stretch out. Top-up headroom is good in front but is definitely limited to sub-6-footers in back. With the top erected, drivers face a considerable obstruction to over-the-shoulder vision.
  • Though the SEL Final Edition’s seat coverings (available in all black or black and beige) class things up a bit, cabin materials display more hard plastic than soft-touch surfaces. As for controls, audio inputs are made simply and intuitively, helpful dials set temperature and fan speed (with buttons for other climate functions), and there’s 1-step operation of the power-folding top.
  • Cabin storage options are abundant, just not bountiful. A retro upper Käferfach glove box and a conventional lower box are helpful considering that there’s no cubby in the center console. A little covered space is in the armrest. A small open bin at the front of the console, door pockets, and pouches on the back of the front seats round out storage capability. Twin cup holders in the console serve front-seat occupants, but there’s just one for the rear row.
  • A scant 7.1 cubic feet of cargo space is available in the trunk—maybe enough for a couple pieces of soft-sided luggage. Rear 50/50-split seats fold for added cargo space, but they don’t fall flat, and they rest at a level above the trunk floor.

The starting price for the Final Edition SEL convertible is $29,995, not counting delivery or options. It’s the way to get the most Beetle possible before it becomes impossible to get any kind of Beetle.
