Creating an Agritourism Business Plan

Previously, we highlighted key obstacles to overcome and pitfalls to avoid when building an agritourism program. In this article, we will go a bit deeper into the importance and practice of building out a business plan.

No matter how great the prospective market, available resources, or the people in your community, without a comprehensive and nimble business plan, the most effective and efficient path to creating a successful agritourism business can be hard to find. While most agritourism programs are diversifications of existing businesses, it is still necessary to create a separate plan for the agritourism venture. Building out a solid business plan upon inception will ensure that you start on the correct path and “cross bridges” early on while you still have the opportunity to turn back without too much loss. Potential hidden costs and other obstacles will also become more apparent when planning.

When writing your business plan, consider the following:

Always Start with the Story

Gather together everyone you plan to work with on building your business – your family, business partner(s), community. First, define who you are; what is your story? What is your core purpose, or mission? Who do you want to serve? Then determine what success looks like. What do you hope to accomplish by opening this business? Identify a clear understanding of your goals and how you expect to achieve them. Work to refine these down to one statement that you keep handy and refer to for both marketing and operations. This statement will help keep you on track, and serve as a guide to achieve your long-term goals & objectives.

Capture the Overview of Your Business and Business Needs

To create an overview of your business, first concisely describe your agritourism idea including the products and / or services you will be offering. Then, write a description of your operation with more specifics. What is the size and location of the operation(s)? What activities will take place on the land? What facilities will be used? Do you currently have enough acreage to carry out your vision, or will you need to acquire more land? Then match up your current and needed assets with your financial resources. Will you have the money needed to open your business right away or will you need to borrow money? You will also need to determine your time and labor needs. Building a new business takes a lot of work, and it likely will require learning new skills and multitasking. Finally, at this stage, it will be important to examine safety, legal and accessibility concerns. For example, are their dangerous areas to which you will need to restrict access? How do you plan to address sanitation needs (restrooms, hand-washing, etc.)? What are the local regulations in relation to the activities you plan to offer? Do you need special permits or licenses? Is what you want to offer legal? What insurance do you need to obtain? It is your responsibility to address these issues prior to opening up your property to visitors.

Goals and Objectives

Goals and objectives allow you to define your vision further. When considering this vision, think of goals as broad accomplishments you hope to achieve; and objectives as the measurable steps you need to take to achieve those goals.

Here’s a simple tribal agritourism example:

Goal: To develop an agritourism program that builds local interest in learning how to harvest traditional foods that will be incorporated in the menus of local restaurants.

Objective: By August have 10 youth sign up and participate in a foraging club that will gather traditional foods.

In the example above, the goal is a bigger picture outcome. It helps guide our program development. The objective on the other hand is measurable – 10 youth signed up by August harvesting traditional foods. The outcome of your objective should give you a clear idea of your successes. Keep in mind that your goals and objectives need to be attainable. Saying you will have your entire program up and running in six months is unlikely, while completing stage one in six months is doable. Setting goals and objectives will help you determine what those stages are.

Conduct a Market Analysis

You are not the first to start an agritourism business. It is important to learn about who else is out there, and what you can learn from their experience. What businesses are doing well and why? What trends in the industry are you responding to with your business and how will you differentiate? Researching other agritourism businesses in your area is important in getting to know your competition, and also to find potential partners. Note, your “competition” could actually be potential partners, as you both have a similar objective of attracting customers to your area. Competition is actually a good thing if you offer complimentary services. You can team up with other businesses to market to a larger customer base and create an attraction that inspires people to travel from further away and to stay longer.

Build out an Operation and Management Plan

After you determine what your business or program is, and you define what success looks like, it is now a good time to create a plan for how you will run, or operate, this business. In creating this plan, consider the following questions: What is the legal structure of the enterprise? Will you need additional insurance than what you currently have? Who do you plan to hire and for which positions will you hire them? What are the skills and responsibilities required for the personnel involved in the operation? How will you find and attract these people? It is important at this stage to consider how the business might scale. You may not need as many people to assist you when you first begin, but in the middle of a growth phase you will not want to go back and rewrite your operation plan.

Identify Your Marketing Strategy

Your marketing strategy is where you harness the story you outlined in step one, and determine how you are going to disseminate this story to prospective customers. The first step here is to determine who your desired customer will be. Will they be from nearby towns or cities, or will they be coming from out of state? Will they be traveling with families, or are you hoping to attract only adults? Once you know what kind of traveler you are seeking you can delve into determining this customer’s general needs and interests, and make sure what you are offering meets these needs and interests. Next, determine how you plan to reach this traveler. There are plenty of paths to take: online, print, travel agents (resellers), media. Not all channels are going to work for all demographics, and choosing incorrectly can be a costly mistake. One way to reduce this cost is to collaborate with other local businesses that offer a similar or complimentary experience. It can also be useful to be a part of marketing efforts carried out by DMO’s (Destination Marketing Organizations) or associations (Chambers of Commerce, trade groups). This strategy will provide the blueprint for a Marketing Plan, which you (and your marketing team) will create prior to getting your business off the ground.  Here’s a helpful resource for creating your agritourism marketing plan: https://www.uvm.edu/~snrvtdc/agritourism/agchecklists/AgritourismMarketing.pdf . The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) also offers a helpful guide and sample template for when you are ready to create your marketing plan ( https://www.sba.gov/business-guide/manage/marketing-sales-plan-payment#section-header-0 ).

Develop Your Financial Strategy

Your financial strategy is basic to making management decisions and obtaining financing. In this section, you will identify sources of existing debt and financing needs. You will also develop financial statements including a profit-loss statement, a balance sheet and a cash flow projection that includes sales projections. It is important to understand what your costs will be, and have a projection for where your break-even point is. To get up and running there will likely be some upfront costs. How do you plan to finance the operation? If you do not have the cash on hand are there sources that you could seek funding from – loans, grants, assets? For example, USDA offers value-add grants as well as loans. If your program has community development aspects (job training, youth employment, sustainability, cultural perpetuation) consider researching foundations with programs in these areas. You could also reach out to your current financial institution to see what kind of assistance they could provide.

This section especially highlights the diverse knowledge required and might seem more foreign to those without a business background. While extremely important, the learning curve is quite attainable, compared to the much more difficult task of coming up with a great idea to base your business on. There are plenty of resources available to get you up to speed on these terms and concepts.

Create an Executive Summary

At the completion of all the components of your business plan, create a one page summary of your venture that includes the business description; mission statement; the market and it’s potential; an overview of your management team; and your financial analysis. This summary will be useful when seeking investors / funders, partners, employees, etc., who may be less likely to read your entire report.

A successful agritourism program has great potential to positively impact your community while also providing you with financial benefits. Few to none of these outcomes will be achieved if there is not a solid business plan to back up the program. Answering these questions early will save a lot of time and energy by avoiding foreseeable issues, and offering the time to develop a successful and valuable product.

10 Creative Ways to Cultivate Profits through Agritourism

Agritourism brings visitors to your farm and helps you increase your income.  Well established agritourism farms don’t rely on the farmer’s market in town to sell their crops.  People come to them.   Established agritourism farms provide employment and increase tourism in a region and are good for the local economy, increasing business in all sectors.  But what can you do to enhance agritourism on your farm operation?  Where do you start?  Here’s 10 creative ways to cultivate the right agritourism mix for your operation.

1.  Farm Market

Farm markets replace the farmer’s market in your business plan.  It can range from a seasonal farm kiosk that sells cut flowers, corn, or berries from your farm gate, to a full fledged fruit stand or produce store that’s open in season or year round and relies on produce from neighbouring farms as well.

In BC this is the most common type of Agritourism — so common it is no longer thought of as agritourism.  Drive by business relies on impulse buying.  Drive along any rural back road in the Fraser Valley and you’ll see unmanned kiosks with bags of produce or bouquets of flowers sold on an honour system.  On larger farms the stand is manned by a teenager or a farm worker, who shows up when you ring a bell.  Along fruit stand row in Cawston and Keremeos you’ll see rows of fruit stands with several seasonal varieties of fruit with competitive pricing.

To be successful with an on farm market you need to be close to a major highway, have signage on the highway, and generally sell for less than the grocery store.  People will drive to your farm if they can save money.

U-pick sales also rely on traffic volumes and good highway signage to promote sales.  Berries, apples, corn all work well for u-pick sales.  When farm pickers are hard to come by, U-pick is a good alternative.  In the Fraser Valley (BC) Krauseberry Farm has a successful u-pick that includes ready picked.  Now its more than that, with an on farm bakery and restaurant, as well as special event promotions.  However, when I visited Krauseberry Farm in the 80s and 90s, to pick strawberries with my family, it just had u-pick berries.  Looking at their website will give you a good idea of how they grew their on farm agritourism business.

3.  On Farm Dining The on farm dining experience brings people out to the farm to eat as well as experience the rural landscape.  Ranging from seasonal or special occasion dining to a full service, year round restaurant specializing in farm raised meat and produce, the on farm dining experience can increase profits while promoting your special niche.

Here’s some examples of on farm dining that I find very appealing:

A to Z Produce and Bakery in Stolkholm, WI,  aka The Pizza Farm, produces pizza from 100% farm raised ingredients — sausage from their pigs, cheese from their cows and veggies in season from their own produce.  The farm is open Tuesday night from 4:30 to 8pm.  They only provide the pizza.  You  have to bring everything else — including tables and chairs,  wine, candles and pack it out with you when you leave.  They live near Chicago and sell out regularly during the summer at 200 pizzas at $25 a pop.  Pizzas are baked in a brick oven outdoors.

Pasu Farm, Carstairs, Alberta, offers fine dining in their on farm restaurant, specializing in lamb and beef grown without hormones or antibiotics on their farm.  Their restaurant is open Tues to Sat 12 to 4 with fine dining evenings on Saturday.  Reservations are essential.  They employ a full time chef for an upscale dining experience.  They also have a boutique that sells wool products produced all over the world.  Located in the same town as Custom Woollen Mill, they have a natural audience for lamb and wool products.

Wine Tasting Galleries are used to full advantage at the Okanagan wineries near Oliver, B.C., where the climate is perfect for world class wines.  Rustico Farm and Cellars caters to a romance-loving public on their farm near Oliver.  Mead and cider tasting are also opportunities where beverages are the main money maker. Tugwell Creek Honey Farm in Sooke, B.C. (video) has a mead tasting room.

4.  Agri-Arts Partnerships with Arts organizations or artisans fuel several galley gift shops that are springing up.  The premise is that artisans are willing to let you sell their work with no risk on your part, through consignment sales.  Your cut, from 30 to 45%.   Tourists that visit your farm for your on-farm market or produce, also visit the gift shop and may purchase local artisan crafts, as well.

Spencer Hill Orchard and Gallery operates on this basis, near me, in Grand Forks, B.C.  Small impulse items work best in this environment.  Larger purchases require an ongoing visit to sell well.

Artisans that grow their own medium, like Joybilee Farm , also work well in this niche.  At Joybilee Farm, we show visitors each step from wool to finished product and have a working studio and gift shop.  Artisan demonstrations are daily, as visitors catch us in our work.  This mix works well for us.  Every product for sale in our gift shop is made by us on the farm from our farm produce and wool — from goat’s milk soaps to herbal moisturizers, yarns, felted clothing, and naturally dyed bags and handwoven accessories.

In Grand Forks, BC, Spencer Hill Orchard and Gallery have summer events where a  local dance troupe performs, with music, accompanied by coffee and pie from the on farm restaurant.  This year’s performance is part of a larger Kettle River Arts Festival.

5.  Agri-Education Educational events such as workshops or school field trips add to the bottom line and give you an opportunity to pass on your message about sustainable living, and organic farming.

Day-camps are an option if you can organize what you have to teach into learning centres — forestry, fibre arts, organic farming, or even music camps work well.  If it can be taught at a summer camp it can work for an on farm day camp.  Keep the group small or hire staff to help and you can create a successful niche for school age children during the summer season.

Workshops are special event days that teach adults coveted skills.  At Joybilee Farm we teach workshops in hand spinning, rigid heddle loom weaving, wool processing, felting and natural dyes.  Groups of 5 to 25 people can be accommodated.  To stretch the space, we put temporary shelters up in case of inclement weather.

6.  Agri-tainment Corn mazes, willow mazes, cultured landscapes and gardens and hayrides all fit into agri-tainment.  They attract people to your farm for a good time.

Often agri-tainment venues also have an on farm store selling produce and local crafts, as well as extra staff for ticket sales, first aid, and running the store.  Extras include a petting zoo, corn cannons, special events that bring groups to the farm again and again over the season.

I visited the Meadows Maze in Pitt Meadows about 12 years ago.  The main crop on the farm was cranberries, but the corn maze brought in more business and they’ve since expanded.

Minter Gardens , near Chilliwack, is another example of agri-tainment, bringing people in for weddings, special events and just to buy from their greenhouse or tour the grounds.  I attended a wedding in the ’80s at Minter Gardens.  We were seated under the leaking roof on an outdoor, undercover, portion of the restaurant. Rain poured in over our plates during the seated reception.  Since then they’ve improved their restaurant and seating to become a world class venue.

7.  Farm Tours Farm Tours allow you to spread your message to an appreciative audience.  They give people a chance to see your farm up close, ask questions, and learn how sustainable farming works.  They give you an audience for your produce, too.  For Joybilee Farm, its important for us to be able to tell people why we do what we do and that clothing grows on farms, too.

Studio Tours and garden tours are once or twice a year events that can compliment your  other agritourism products.  “Painters in a Potters Garden” was an annual rural event in Mission, B.C. at Jo Priestley’s pottery studio.

Jo Priestley, although not a farmer, produced a quality venue to show case local artists and brought quite a few visitors to her rural property.  Significantly, her property was not on a main highway nor did the event have a lot of advertising and signage.  In fact, we got lost a few times looking for it.  It was packed with buyers, none-the-less.

Winery Tours and Bus Tours are other ways to promote your farm.  These tours are organized around a common theme and bring tourists to your farm as one stop, on a several stop tour.  You need to have good parking, washroom facilities and ease of access to participate.  Contact your local tourism association for more information about getting involved in these lucrative opportunities.

8.  Petting Zoos Lots of farms with other types of agritourism, add a petting zoo to give young visitors something to do.  Goats are a favourite petting zoo character because they are curious and give a good show to visitors.  Other petting zoo candidates include bottle lambs, bunnies, and caged poultry.  Animals in petting zoos need to be given regular rest periods so that they aren’t stressed by interactions with inquisitive children.

9. Farm Stays Farm stays include cabins on the farm, B & B accommodation, cattle drives,  shepherd huts and weaver cottages.  In our area, PaVan Ranch, near Grand Forks, has cabins that are rented out to visitors and include ranch type activities in the mix from hay rides to cattle branding.

Averley Sheep Ranch, Vavenby, BC, offers farm stays to experience spring shearing, lambing and alpine pastures.

10.  Community Supported Agriculture Finally, while we don’t normally think of CSA as being agritourism, when the CSA brings people to your farm to pick up their produce, it becomes agritourism.  Many of the farms I’ve used as examples in this article use CSA to sell their produce.  CSAs give you a built in audience for your agritourism and help spread the word about what you have to offer.

CSA clients pay at the beginning of the season for the produce they will take home during the season.  They share the risks of crop failures with you.  They sometimes pitch in with the work.  They become part of your farm family.  Consider it as part of the larger agritourism mix.

I’ve given you 10 broad ways to cultivate agritourism on your own farm operation.  Each of the farms, I’ve given by example, started with one or two agritourism products and then expanded as they grew their business and saw a need that they could fill.

Agritourism is a subsector of the ecotourism industry in which tourists visit farms, ranches, or other agricultural businesses, whether for the purpose of education or entertainment. These vacations can be either an experience—say, for fishing, horseback riding, or touring a tea plantation—or a full-on immersive stay in which guests participate in regular upkeep of crops and livestock for several days.

There's nothing new about this form of travel—people have been working on farms in exchange for accommodation for decades, heading to Italian vineyards or Rocky Mountain dude ranches for what's become known as "WWOOFing" (worldwide opportunities on organic farms). Beyond the beautiful scenery and camaraderie, agritourism helps foster a deeper understanding of global farming processes through hands-on experience.

Here are eight destinations for agritourism around the world.

A couple of things make Taiwan an ideal spot for an in-depth agritourism vacation: Many smaller farms offer homestay accommodation, so guests can mingle with the locals as opposed to staying in hotel rooms, and because the food served and sold is grown locally, this option makes it easier to support sustainable agriculture and lower your carbon footprint while traveling.

Lush, rugged Taiwan is an ideal environment for growing sugar, pineapples and citrus fruits, crude tea, and asparagus—the country's principal cash and export crops. Around 200 “ leisure farms ” spread across 31 designated rural areas offer tours of the fields and facilities for these crops. They also, of course, provide ample chances to sample the products.

Tuscany was one of the first destinations to really coin the concept of farm stays, thanks to its atmospheric agriturismos , old farmhouses that were turned into inns when agriculture in Italy was suffering during the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. Now, there are an estimated 20,000 of them around the country, offering an authentic and quaint Italian pastoral experience to people who would otherwise only be able to see this region on a group tour.

While a few of the estates in Tuscany offer a more educational focus, the attraction of staying in a farmhouse in this region can mostly be attributed to the views, the laidback ambiance, and the locally grown olives, grapes, and other fruits. From wine-soaked stays in the Chianti area to farmhouses that create magic out of homegrown tomatoes, herbs, and cheeses, this sun-drenched region is widely celebrated for its agriculture, provisions, and unmatched scenery.

On the popular Spanish island of Mallorca, farmhouse inns focus more on providing isolation and solitude than offering hands-on farming experience. With millions of visitors descending on the beaches of Mallorca and other Balearic Islands each summer, peace and quiet is rare and coveted.

Mainly located in the hills of inland Mallorca, away from coastal crowds, these inns range from rustic century-old farmhouses to luxury bed-and-breakfasts with spas and swimming pools. Some sit in the middle of orange or fig groves and serve dishes made from ingredients grown on-site.

Brazil is a vast country, 86% of the size of the U.S., with abounding natural resources and a vibrant, diverse agricultural industry. The South American nation is one of the world's largest producers of soy, maize, sugarcane, and rice, and an average supplier of fruit, coffee, eucalyptus, and tropical flowers. While agriculture isn't the bulk of the country's economy , Brazil's innovative and sustainable practices really attract farm-minded travelers.

Brazil provides a global example of regenerating and restoring degraded pastures. According to the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock, a third of rural private properties is dedicated just to preserving native vegetation. Each farm sets aside a minimum of 20% of land for this purpose.

Tourists can experience the rich pastoral culture by embarking on farm tours or opting for an immersive, participatory stay.

The Hawaii Agritourism Association offers resources for tourists who want to have a tropical farm experience, or who simply want to learn about and taste the state's best farm fare. Agritourism options range from visiting coffee plantations in the Big Island's Kona region to exploring the tropical plantations on Maui to staying at organic farms on Oahu.

The vast range of farm tour options caters to both beachgoers and adventure tourists, and can be included briefly in the itinerary so guests don't have to center their whole trip around the state's agriculture (although that would be possible, too).

Tourism is now the largest foreign exchange earner for Grenada, but agriculture is not far behind. This Caribbean country is packed with cocoa plantations, spice farms, and fruit farms. Nutmeg, mace, cloves, cinnamon, and turmeric are grown in higher quantities here than almost anywhere else in the world.

One of the Caribbean's best agritourism resorts, the Belmont Estates , is located in Grenada. This three-century-old estate has a thriving nutmeg and cocoa business, an organic farm, and a restaurant that serves traditional Grenadian food made with ingredients grown on-site. Any tourist keen to see exotic edibles at their source should consider Grenada a top choice for a Caribbean-based farm experience.

More than a third of the vegetables and two-thirds of the fruits and nuts grown in the U.S. come from California. The Golden State is home to a world-famous Wine Country , century-old orchards, avocado farms, fisheries, and more. Naturally, it's an agritourism utopia, and many of the smaller family farms in this West Coast state rely on agritourism to supplement their income.

Besides staying in the wineries and vineyards of the Central Coast and Sonoma areas, family farms and large ranches also offer a more hands-on approach. Many teach small-scale farming techniques and even offer strategies for organic growing. The University of California system, one of the largest state-run higher education systems in the U.S., has a small-farm program that helps growers create education-oriented agritourism businesses.

With its more than 7,000 islands exhibiting a diverse range of conditions, the Philippines is an ideal place for visiting several varying agritourism sites or focusing on a niche product. Tourists can visit a vast pineapple plantation—like the country's largest, the Del Monte Pineapple Plantation—for a taste of large-scale agriculture, or instead focus on smaller operations like orchid farms, bee farms, and those focusing on exotic fruits like dragon fruit and papaya.

The Philippines government is looking to actively bolster what is already a successful niche for tour companies and farmers, and travelers from the U.S. don't have to worry too much about language barriers because English is widely spoken.

As a young entrepreneur, I tried many agritourism ideas. When the neighborhood kids were selling lemonade for pennies, I created a lucrative program named “Name a Duck for a Buck.” You got to name a duck for a dollar and receive a certificate that you could proudly hang on your office wall, school desk, or bedroom. And like Tom Sawyer’s painted fence, I graciously offered to clean the duck ponds and chicken coops to any urban child who wanted a taste of the farm life… for only a small fee.

Like genetic diversity is important for crops and livestock, income diversity is key to starting a small farm for profit . You’ll have multiple backup plans if one crop fails or a seasonal project doesn’t go through. In addition to selling eggs and produce, opening up your land to the public will provide you with multiple alternative agritourism opportunities.

Alternative Crops

When my friend in a Homeowner’s Association (HOA)had to remove her beautiful chicken coop and birds, she doubled down on rabbits. There is usually no law prohibiting the keeping of rabbits in cities or HOA neighborhoods. Rabbits can be kept in small runs, grow fast, and can feast on kitchen leftovers, cut grass, and formulated feed. She butchers and processes her own meat, and her customers appreciate knowing how their food is treated. Since little space is needed and they reproduce (like rabbits) and provide a great low-cost opportunity to dive into backyard livestock.

Raising crickets, mealworms, and earthworms for the pet industry or fishing also requires little space and little overhead. Those with more space can try alternative livestock such as bison, elk, emu, and water buffalo. In addition to profiting from meat sales, having customers visit your operation can generate income through farm tours and workshops.

My same friend who raises rabbits started offering Airbnb on her property. When she told me she made $7,000 on just offering rent during school holidays and the summer, I was intrigued. By the time of this publication, my one-acre homestead should be open as a bed and breakfast periodically throughout the year, complete with chicken and duck encounters.

To learn more, I contacted Janet DelCastillo, owner of Rancho DelCastillo. She is a licensed thoroughbred racehorse trainer and has lived on her central Florida farm for 35 years. Racehorses gallop the perimeter of her ten-acre property, complete with a picturesque lake.

“Two years ago, my son and daughter-in-law came to visit and suggested I consider Airbnb,” DelCastillo recalls. They travel the country, helping set up Airbnb areas on farms and homesteads.

“They both cleaned my back bedroom area and made a lovely studio for guests with a private bathroom. The entrance is just off the pool deck, so there is no problem with guests tromping into my home,” DelCastillo says. She provides a fridge, microwave, wet bar, and cooking facilities. “This makes it very easy to have guests, and yet I continue my regular training program. They are welcome to observe and tag along with me in the morning if they choose.”

DelCastillo has found that most guests come because they love the idea of being on a horse farm and having a laid-back environment. Her chickens provide a daily egg hunt for those guests who want to take part in the search.

“They are thrilled with farm fresh free-range eggs,” she says. “Since I have a miniature horse here, the children may brush, pet, and love on him. He has been a real asset.”

Her guests are very excited about helping her feed the horses. Searching farm experiences on bed and breakfast sites will show you that there is a business opportunity for those willing to open up their homestead. DelCastillo currently receives about 10% of her income from Airbnb. And the guests love pitching in with the chores!

“I have found this experience to be great fun. Many diverse people come through my farm from around the world. We have intriguing discussions, which has allowed me to share my animals and my farm. I would encourage any farm family to open their doors to share how the businesses of farming works. The education to the general public is invaluable and gives insight to the challenges we all face.”

As I camped my way around Iceland in a transit van, I always looked for farms that offered camping sites. One of the most memorable places I stayed at was an organic flower and vegetable farm. They also had a flock of Icelandic chickens, which I adored. Providing a flat field with toilets and warm showers, water, and chemical disposal points is a must. Be all-inclusive by offering firewood, basic supplies, and food at an additional cost. My favorite idea, which I have seen advertised throughout the United States, is the optional animal-related excursion. One place in California offers hiking with a hornbill, a large toucan-like exotic African bird. More commonly, farm campsites offer mountain hiking with goats.

Corn and Sunflower Mazes 

Turn a field of towering crops into a seasonal maze. HarvestMoon Farm, located in Brooksville, Florida, added a haunted hayride, farm-themed bounce house, and petting zoo to create a family-friendly event that is widely popular. Saturday nights during their peak season, the farm offers flashlight nights where guests can roam the maze in the dark. Food vendors are on site, offering various food, snacks, and drinks. Offering u-pick berries by the pound or cut sunflowers at the end of the maze will boost your visitor’s spending. With the popularity of mazes, some businesses can rely solely on their maze season. Economists say that farms that offer mazes can make between $5,000 and $50,000 a year.

Fishing lakes

According to the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), sport fishing is the number one recreational activity in the United States. Anglers can pay landowners for the opportunity to fish on private lands, a great alternative to avoid crowded public lands. And this can mean profits for you. There are three categories of fee fishing operations including long-term leases, day leases, and “pay-by-the-pound” lakes.

Growing flowers on a lot no larger than a half acre can be quite profitable. The “big” flower farms are considered 10 acres or more. Since flowers are usually planted, cultivated, and harvested all by hand, keep in mind the amount of time and labor you will need to invest. Flowers can be sold to area florists, wedding planners, funeral homes, convention centers, and to individuals during various holidays. Your property will look beautiful with fields of flowers, so offer photographers, wedding, and birthday parties a chance to photograph on your land for a fee.

Petting Zoo

Starting a petting zoo business   can be a seasonal or year-round agritourism idea.  By just being open in the spring or summer, when there are young animals to hold and feed, can keep your homestead quiet the rest of the year if that is a concern. Another option is to take the animals on the road. I had great fun taking my neighbor’s Shetland pony, Southdown babydoll sheep, and chickens to various summer camps when I was a teenager, and the income was an added bonus.

By growing ornamental and edible plants for their seeds, you can sell locally, online, teach people how to save seeds, and offer advice on seeds that grow well locally. Researching and planting rare heirloom, or specialty seeds is your best bet if you are going to profit from selling seeds. I was relatively successful in selling loofah seeds locally. I sold them to farmer’s markets and a middleman who sold them online for me. My downfall was that I used that money to buy more seeds.

Keep the farm in the farmers market. Rent your land to nearby farmers and homesteaders. Weekly or monthly, offer a place for the community to sell their wares, livestock, and produce. Charge per spot and ask the vendors to donate an item for a general raffle. The extra traffic to your homestead could help you sell additional goods and open yourself to a wider market. Ask the vendors to send you their updated list of goods. By compiling the list, you can easily create an up-to-date digital newsletter that can be shared on your social media pages.

By creating a flyer, which the vendors contribute to, you can advertise specialty crops and livestock for each swap meet you host.

And for those who want to go upscale with agritourism, consider hosting weddings. A large farm or building could make a great banquet hall. Work with area artisan chefs to create a magical farm-themed wedding every 4-H and FFA member wants. There are tons of farm, farm animal, and country-themed wedding favors and themes to offer.

Offer rustic, country or vintage chic. Your picture perfect homestead might make the perfect accommodations for intimate or large weddings.

Agro-ecotourism: A Potential & Sustainable Livelihood Option in the Indian Himalayan Region

The potential and forecasted footprint of both international and domestic tourists in the IHR is expected to be around 240 million tourists by 2025.  It is now recognized that tourism can support sustainable development and achieve the millennium development goal of alleviation of poverty. Tourism has great ability to be one of the key development activities in the region, and ensure conducive conditions to address the issues of unemployment, revenue generation and the ability of IHR (Indian Himalayan Region) communities and the environment to absorb and equitably benefit from the impacts of tourism in a sustainable way. Ecotourism is defined as a form of tourism that entails responsible travel to natural areas and which conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of local people. Interest in visiting natural areas and observing wildlife is growing bringing opportunities at the same time building pressures on resources and the need for good management.

According to the United Nations, issues such as climate change, effective resource management, poverty reduction and inclusive growth need to be at the centre of tourism development. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are now recognized as a universal 17-goal plan of action for people, the planet and prosperity for all countries require all stakeholders to act in collaborative partnerships. Apart from several other SDGs, mountain specific tourism is directly included as a target in Goals 8 and 12:

Goal 8 on the promotion of “sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth”, full and productive employment and decent work for all includes as Target 8.9 “By 2030, devise and implement policies to promote sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products”. 

Goal 12 aimed to “ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns” includes as Target 12.b to “Develop and implement tools to monitor sustainable development impacts for sustainable tourism which creates jobs, promotes local culture and products”.

Data for the last five years on tourist arrivals shows unprecedented growth in the IHR. The total number of tourist arrivals from 2011-2015 were 494 million which is 8.42% of the total national arrival (5,870,256,562). Further, it is expected that by 2025 (Figure 1) tourist footfall in IHR will increase multi-fold (estimated 240 million).

In this context agro ecotourism is an element within sustainable agriculture that addresses the acute threat to biodiversity by increasing landscape diversity, implementing the core principles of ecotourism and incorporating the essential practices of eco-agriculture and permaculture. It is a symbiotic relationship between tourism and agriculture where farmers and farms are an integral part of development and provide a positive economic approach to rural development. Agro ecotourism offers significant opportunities for the development of market niches based on the new food and nutrition experiences borne out of the traditional crops for the tourists, consumers and new educational experience by exposure to various agricultural production systems.

Agro ecotourism can be successful in rural and often remote areas where alternative sources of livelihood are scarce and levels of poverty are frequently high. It can provide a much needed addition to local income from an activity that values and supports conservation. However local communities should be involved in its planning and in the benefits it brings and attention must be paid to sound business planning and market access if it is to be economically sustainable and enhance the geographical character of place, its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage and the well being of its residents (Figure 2).

It will enhance the linkages of the agriculture and food system with nutrition, health and socio-economic status of the people. Agro ecotourism can deliver more benefits to poor people through employment policies, strengthen the local food supply chain, provide assistance with enterprise formation and support for local services and infrastructure. It will stimulate the sustainable traditional farming practices and create mutual economic advantages through creative links between ecotourism and agriculture. It will encourage innovative product development and fair trade by strengthening links with the arts, handicraft and local heritage. It will result in all round conservation which will benefit the local communities. Agro ecotourism should be popularized in order to maximize the potential of well managed ecotourism as a key economic force for the conservation of nature. Agro ecotourism depends on fine landscapes and abundant wildlife. Therefore agro ecotourism development and the revenues it can bring should be seen as a strong ally and tool in their conservation. This involves strengthening the traditional knowledge skills and resources of protected area.

There is also need of agro ecotourism designing which will facilitate total harmony in its surrounding and leaving a minimal foot print and combining the traditional forces of inspiration with new technology. The viability and performance of agro ecotourism enterprises will strongly depend on the effective marketing, education and training of local communities. Poor farmers who are not skilled in finance or knowledgeable about markets and handling visitors need to be trained to develop skills. They need to be informed about markets and have access through the most effective channels including new technology. Agro ecotourism can help land owners in finding useful ways that they can afford to work their land. A major problem in central Himalayan region is the loss of the ability of the present land owners to utilize their land successfully in an economically feasible manner. The main obstacle facing present rural land owners is low return on agro activities. With every passing day it is becoming difficult to make money from the land. With the advent of tourism industry people can now augment their income. During peak tourist season i.e. spring and autumn when farm activities are less the local farmers can act as tourist guides, punters, bus drivers, housekeepers or cooks however they need to be made aware of tourist categories and that sometimes simple camping has to be replaced by ‘glamping’ (glamorous camping) where in sleeping bags, torches, match sticks and swiss knives will have make way for Persian rugs, extra-long beds with soft pillows, crisp sheets and blankets, 24 hours electricity, hot tubs and especially for the Indian MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions).

There is a need to establish a strong partnership between local communities' knowledgeable private sector tourism businesses, NGO’s and Government.

Agro ecotourism involves observing the indigenous people whose farming and herding practices that are part of their customary knowledge and cultural identity can be experienced firsthand (Figure 3). Experiencing authentic local tastes is an important part of what makes an eco-holiday enjoyable and memorable therefore traditional food has an important role in promoting   agro ecotourism.  Tourists from abroad are keen to watch and experience the traditional farming practiced in this region, even our city bred population who hardly has a chance to see a blade of grass grow may love to know about how the food that is served to him reaches him. Thus tourists may be keen to observe and participate in traditional agricultural activities such as ploughing, sowing, harvesting, collection of firewood and fodder and care for family livestock. Some typical community activity may include:

1. Guided and non-guided treks through villages (Figure 4) to meet people in their homes and fields belonging to different religion, castes, ethnic groups to learn about their work, belief, dress, home decoration and customs. Enjoy wearing traditional dresses and ornaments and even purchasing them as gifts and souvenirs.

2. Visit local artisans/craftsman and watch or join them working with traditional skills e.g. basket making, blacksmith/goldsmith etc. They can even enjoy traditional natural healing processes after visiting local traditional doctors called Vaidyas, gain knowledge on natural medicinal herbs and learn their traditional methods of identification.

3. Learn local cooking use of different flavouring spices, pickle making, tasting village cuisines which are not found in cities. Traditional milk processing, and enjoy fresh and pure milk products. Enjoy local drinks like Jaan , and salted tea that villagers drink to keep themselves warm in winter.

4. Watch traditional methods of oil extraction, husking paddy, and corn grinding by micro hydro powered mills called Gharat.

5 . Learn about construction of traditional house made of wood, stone and mud.

6. Learn about the local architecture widely depicted in local temples and religious and mythical stories about local deities.

When the tourism product is the traditional community life then the community must address the difficult challenge of maintaining the traditional authentic character. While developing the tourism industry the locals have to keep in mind the fragility of their community, limited carrying capacity, restricted budgets, economic goals and the responsibility of protecting their traditional agricultural base. Then tourists both national and international will come to witness and experience the community and its way of life – the epitome of agro ecotourism. Thus agro ecotourism can be a source of poverty reduction and environment management in the Indian Himalayan region.

It’s that time of year again to ask ourselves, “What’s new, cool, and innovative in tourism?”. We’ve compiled a list of new, innovative tourism business ideas for 2023 so you can find your niche. 

The travel and tourism industry is in a state of constant flux, never more so than in the last few years. Every change and new trend brings with it an opportunity for tour operators to deliver what their customers old and new want—as well as add new tours and experiences they don’t yet even know they want. 

  As countries began to ease restrictions, 2022 saw the travel industry rebound from 2021 and 2020. Despite new global challenges appearing during 2022 and continuing into 2023, including the Russian-Ukraine war and the global economic fallout, the most important trend of all is that people still want to travel and are even budgeting for more travel.

As one travel professional interviewed for TravelAge West ’s article on travel trends put it: “It’s almost like travel went from a discretionary spend to an essential spend for a lot of people.”

Despite all that is still happening in the world, around the industry there is a continued air of optimism in 2023. Travel Pulse noted that “ while 2022 was the year of recovery [recovered almost 60 percent of its pre-pandemic levels], 2023 is poised to be the year of reinvention.” Booking.com research prompted them to label 2023 as a year of “creative imagination of travel.” Skyscanner’s Travel Trends report concluded that “Post-COVID restrictions, travellers continue to prioritize adventures abroad and embrace travel freedoms with relish.”

Here are some of the latest major trends and innovative tourism business ideas to keep an eye on and potentially incorporate into the tours and travel experiences you offer. We’ll also highlight a few of the more unusual and niche trends that could take off during 2023 or in the longer term, or just inspire some “out of the box” thinking when looking at your own products and services.

1. Transformational trips

A buzz phrase you’ll hear a lot in 2023 is “transformational retreat.” This refers to travel experiences that cater to people who want to undergo a significant personal or spiritual transformation. Retreats and activities include meditation, yoga, therapy, workshops, and other experiential practices. Most promote self-awareness, personal growth, and positive change, typically taking place in a secluded and peaceful setting and led by experienced facilitators or coaches. 

Booking.com’s Travel Predictions 2023 report called these trips “peace and pleasure pilgrimages.” The report found that 42 percent of travelers want to focus on their mental and physical health, including retreats to smooth the processes of pregnancy and menopause.” A large proportion of travelers are interested in meditation or mindfulness retreats. Some retreats even take the word “trip” literally, catering to people interested in the potential therapeutic benefits of the controlled and supervised use of “magic mushrooms” and other psychedelics.

2. Forest bathing and digital detoxing

Not everyone is looking for a transformational outcome from their vacation; many simply want to unwind and enjoy some quality “me time.” Wellness vacations have been a growing tourism business trend for some time, with demand accelerated by the pandemic. Tours that offer people the chance to pamper themselves and generally recalibrate are likely to be extremely popular for the foreseeable future.

Two specific innovative tourism business ideas that look likely to be especially popular in 2023 are “forest bathing” and “digital detoxing.” 

Forest bathing, or Shinrin-yoku , originated in Japan. It involves becoming immersed in nature to enhance physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It can be as simple as going for a long walk through a forest, or sitting by a lake and taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the natural surroundings. Research has shown that forest bathing can reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, and even boost the immune system and reduce blood pressure and heart rate. After the last few years we’ve all been through, it’s no wonder it’s proving popular with travelers.

In a similar vein, many people want to unplug and undertake a “digital detox” where you never need to ask for the Wi-Fi password because there is no Wi-Fi. They could be seeking respite from “doom scrolling” through social media and news feeds on their digital devices, or they just want a break from the glowing screens so prevalent in their day-to-day. Trips that encourage travelers to leave their devices at home will be popular, whether to wellness retreats that ban or discourage digital devices or an out-of-the-way destination that makes electronic communication extremely difficult.

3. Off-grid and “survival” travel

One way to both commune with nature and unplug from your digital life is to go where no signal can reach you. Booking.com’s report found that 55 percent of travelers want to spend their vacations off-grid, resulting in an increase in tour operators offering trips to places where you can’t easily be reached. This could be a lodge in a remote part of a country or backcountry camping.

A related trend is the opposite of “glamping.” A growing number of travelers want to challenge themselves to survive in inhospitable conditions (you know… just in case), while learning new skills at the same time. In Booking.com’s report, 58 percent of travelers want to learn survival skills on holiday—everything from fire lighting and food foraging to the more full-on prepping for societal breakdown. Zombie survival camp anyone?

4. Hush trips, workcations, and micro-cations

Shhh, don’t tell anyone (especially your co-workers and definitely not your boss), but “hush trips” are on the rise. A hush trip is a secret trip taken by an employee without their employer’s knowledge. It’s all linked to the huge rise in remote working. People who work in a different city and country from their employer can theoretically do their work from anywhere. However, a hush trip can be slightly different from a “workcation,” another popular trend in the age of remote working, when an employer’s permission is often sought. On a hush trip, no actual work might be done; the employee wants a real holiday to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and recharge, but they may not use their vacation days to take it. They complete their work and take a day or two off without anyone knowing (they hope,) perhaps logging in now and then for appearances’ sake. Or, they may travel somewhere and continue to work, while enjoying their downtime in a new place, again without telling anyone. 

Many hush trips are “micro-cations,” short trips often taken close to home, often at the last minute. The micro-cation trend has continued to grow for the last few years, as people look for quick, convenient, and often budget-friendly getaways that don’t require a lot of planning. 

When you combine the acceptance of remote working among many more employers with a large number of people who left the office behind and didn’t miss it for a second, you have an opportunity to create workcation and hush trip experiences for digital nomads and remote workers.

5. Traveling for “bleisure”

The travel industry does love a good old word mash-up to describe the latest trend. Hot on the heels of workcations, we have the related trend of “bleisure”—a name coined to describe the trend of business travelers tacking on some leisure time to the end of business trips. Where a workcation is often a longer trip designed around work, the growth of bleisure trips reflects the fact that as business travel bounces back, people still want as much vacation time as they can get. 

Although the economy could affect business travel in 2023 as companies cut costs, it’s worth keeping an eye on the business and conference market to target business travelers who want to carve out some vacation time to explore a destination on their own time.

6. Set-jetting

If you’ve ever wanted to visit the set of your favorite movie or TV show, you’re not alone. A top travel trend for 2023 is “set-jetting,” when travelers visit destinations primarily because they were featured in a popular movie, TV show, or book. According to research, 39 percent of travelers have booked trips to places featured on shows or movies ( Expedia ). While people have long been drawn to iconic movie locations, perhaps the earliest example of mass set-jetting was New Zealand’s tourism industry getting a huge boost after the country played a leading role in the “Lord of The Rings” movies. Fans of the “Outlander” books and TV series have also been making pilgrimages to Scotland to see the country that provides the backdrop for their favorite show.

People don’t just want to visit the actual physical set and filming location, but also just the cities or countries featured in a particular production. Keep an eye out for popular shows where the location is as much the star of the show as the actors, such as “The Crown” (England,) “Emily in Paris” (Paris,) and “The White Lotus” (Sicily), as they could trigger a surge in demand for particular locations and experiences relating to the shows, such as a themed tour.

7. Sustainable tourism and electric travel

“Ecotourism” has been on the rise for several years, and continues to be popular. According to Booking.com’s Sustainable Travel Report 2022 , 81 percent of global travelers say sustainable travel is important to them, and 50 percent are influenced by news reports on climate change when it comes to booking choices. 

So-called “ecotours” let tourists enjoy a vacation while also learning about environmental and sustainability issues in a particular location. Some enable people to do something tangible to help, such as volunteering to plant trees or help to restore habitats. Many travelers these days also seek out “small footprint” or socially-responsible travel. This may not be an eco-tour as such; it could just mean they favor tour companies that take steps to minimize the impact of their tours or incorporate a social responsibility element. 

Many travelers also want to stay in planet-friendly accommodations. According to Booking.com’s report, 57 percent of travelers prefer accommodation with sustainable certification. Another related trend to watch is road trips or other travel using electric vehicles. Some car rental companies are adding electric cars to their fleets, and VW has even built an electric version of their classic camper van, the ID Buzz. Within cities, travelers might want to do tours on electric bikes and focus on other more sustainable modes of transport rather than the traditional taxi and car hire approach. In the not too distant future, electric air travel may even become the norm thanks to companies like Eviation that are developing electric planes.

8. Indigenous experiences

Countries around the world are making an increased effort to reverse past wrongs when it comes to treatment of Indigenous peoples, while also empowering Indigenous communities to take a lead in areas like travel and tourism. Canada is one nation going through a period of reconciliation as it faces up to and attempts to make amends for its colonial past. This has resulted in a huge growth in Indigenous-led travel companies, experiences, resorts, and accommodation options. 

Australia and New Zealand are also seeing a growth in opportunities for travelers to support and learn about Indigenous communities, histories, and cultures.

If you are an Indigenous entrepreneur, you may find great opportunities available with an increase in programs that support Indigenous tourism in these countries. For others, there may be opportunities for partnering with or supporting Indigenous-led businesses and organizations in your region.

The economic upheaval we saw through 2022 looks set to continue through 2023. Inflation and cost of living rises mean while the desire to travel is still strong, many travelers will still have at least one eye on their budget. This could mean more interest from thrifty travelers in camping, self-catering, and all-inclusive holidays. Activities and vacations that involve renting rather than buying equipment could also be more popular.

10. Luxury cruises and upscale all-inclusive

While there will be a lot of budget-conscious travelers in 2023, there are also plenty of opportunities in the luxury travel market, including two types of travel luxury travelers may previously have turned their noses up at—all-inclusive trips and cruises. The luxury cruise market, as well as the cruise market in general, is set to rebound in style. CN Traveller reported on “ a new breed of luxury yachts from the world’s leading hotel brands,” including  The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection , which boasts  “ the most sophisticated and expensive civilian ship ever built in Spain.” Cruise companies like Scenic and Emerald Cruises are expecting high demand for spots on their luxury ships . If you are on a luxury cruise route, catering your activities to a luxury-seeking clientele, with prices to match, might be worth considering.

Cruises tend to be all-inclusive as standard, but there is also a growth in upscale all-inclusive vacations in general. These experiences offer the best of everything—food, accommodation, and experiences, all for a set (and premium) price. Ikos Resorts will open a new five-star all-inclusive resort in Mallorca in June 2023.

11. Train travel

From the “Flying Scotsman” to the “Orient Express,” there are few more romantic ways to travel than by train. However, train travel is also increasingly overlapping with other trends in our list, as it becomes more popular as a way to travel more sustainably by reducing car and air travel, travel slower (unless we’re talking train travel in Japan) and for longer, and travel to more countries on the same trip.

Train travel can also offer scenic views, comfortable travel with spacious seats, sleeping accommodation for longer or overnight trips, and the opportunity to socialize with other travelers, and convenient access to city centres. Piggy-backing the trend toward more immersive travel experiences, train travel also lets travelers see more of a country while mixing with locals. Many countries and rail companies, especially in Europe, offer passes that let travelers visit multiple places in one trip without leaving the ground. If your tours and activities are near a popular rail route, look for ways to capitalize on the increase in train travel by catering to people who may want something to do for a day or two before they move on.

12. Glamping

During the pandemic, with international travel off the menu for most people,  RV rentals spiked dramatically . Road trips made it easier for tourists to physically distance from other travelers in a post-COVID world, and “glampervan” vacations became popular. Glamping is still on the rise in 2023; the glamping market is expected to reach US$4.1bn in 2028 ( Stratview Research ). Glamping lets people enjoy sleeping and living in the great outdoors, but with a step-up in comfort from traditional camping. Glampers can stay in everything from classic Airstream trailers to yurts and all manner of other non-tent accommodation.

13. Go solo or go social

While “travel bubbles” are no longer required for COVID-related reasons, group travel continues to rise in popularity. Hotels and tour companies increasingly cater to family groups or groups of friends who want to take a memorable trip together. For example, Atticus Hotel  in Oregon’s  Bunkhouse room for groups . It’s not just families making up for lost time with “reunion” or “celebration” travel. Tour operator Contiki noticed an upswing in demand for what they call “social travel” from groups of Gen Z-ers who want to get together on a trip to celebrate birthdays, graduations, and other milestones: “Gen Z want to make up for lost time spent together and get travelling.” Another type of social travel piggybacks the rise of “travel influencers” on social media platforms like Instagram. Some popular influencers are pivoting to provide the opportunity for their followers to literally follow them on a trip. People can go on a trip or do an activity with their favorite influencer and a group of fellow followers.

Of course, not everyone has a posse to travel with or wants to travel with others. Solo travel continues to be very popular and has moved from a niche to a mainstream market. A Skyscanner report found that 40 percent wanted to travel solo for mental health wellness reasons, while singles and divorcees ranked highly for being ready to take a solo trip. The report concludes: “There is no longer any stigma attached to taking a trip on your own, and many tour companies cater specifically to this market.”

In a move that reflects the growing interest in responsible and sustainable travel, hotel company Habitas have opened a number of flat-pack hotels around the world for “like-minded people seeking connection, inspiration and a better future together.”

15. Crypto trips

A number of tour operators and travel companies now offer travelers the ability to pay with cryptocurrency. Some examples include Borrow a Boat , Soneva Resorts  and Get Your Guide . 

16. Dark tourism

There has been a rise in so-called “dark tourism,” when people travel to places or sites associated with disasters and darker historical events. Famous examples include Pearl Harbour, Alcatraz, and Hiroshima. If this is the first you’ve heard of this term, it can sound a bit ghoulish. However, travelers who explore these sites generally do so to pay their respects or learn more about important historical events that hopefully will never be repeated.

17. Sober travel

Sober travel has been around for a while, but it mostly catered to people in recovery. In 2023, sober travel is a subset of wellness travel. Travel companies like Travel Sober and  Sober Outside have pivoted to target anyone who wants a sober vacation.

18. Virtual travel

Forbes Magazine thinks 2023 will be “the year that tourism in the metaverse takes off.” Travel companies can use VR to give potential customers a taste of the experience they can expect from a tour or location. VR can be accessible through web browsers or people can enjoy a much more immersive experience using VR headsets.

19. Nostalgic travel

Booking.com’s 2023 travel predictions found that 88 percent of travelers want to go on a “nostalgic getaway,” whether that’s theme parks we went to as kids, nostalgic movie locations, or other trips down memory lane. 

20. Sleep tourism

Everyone likes a good night’s sleep, especially on vacation, and the travel is waking up to the opportunities offered by a rise in “sleep tourism.” The Park Hyatt New York now offers a stay in their  One Bedroom Sleep Suite by Bryte , while Swedish bed brand Hastens opened a branded Sleep Spa . Good night, sleep well.
