It is a list of weekend getaways for Mumbaikars which you can keep in your bucket list for each weekend of Monsoon. For others, you may have to do it in one go. Follow me on one thing, that is to visit western ghats in rainy season strictly and I can guarantee that you will return here every year. Mumbai or Pune is ideal base camp to explore the region. These are the places where journey is more beautiful than destinations.

Photo of Bucket List - 10 Road Trips to Cover All of India 10/21 by Pragmatic Traveller

Visit Imagica and Della Adventures for some fun activities on the way. While exploring these unimaginably beautiful ghats you may find breathtaking small towns. Do not hesitate to spend a night or two in such innate places.

Hill towns along the way are insanely raw and disconnected with outer world.

Tick your bucket list for river rafting and bungee jumping at Rishikesh at the start of the circuit and enjoy the journey along the small towns of sacred Uttarakhand. A shortcut is moving directly from Auli to Kufri.

Photo of Bucket List - 10 Road Trips to Cover All of India 17/21 by Pragmatic Traveller

My personal favorite is silk route which was used for trading from china to western and middle eastern countries. It is one of the most scenic routes on himalayas with a lot of hairpin bends. Sikkim is a cocktail of north eastern mix with other indian culture.

Photo of Bucket List - 10 Road Trips to Cover All of India 18/21 by Pragmatic Traveller

Restricted Area Permit will be required to travel to Lachung, Nathula and Zuluk (Silk Route) which can be obtained at Gangtok. Keep a day spare in Gangtok for arranging same.

10. North East Road Trip:

10 – 15 days, 2000 km, mar – oct.

Guwahati – Tawang(2N) – Kaziranga(1N) – Majuli(1N) – Kohima(2N) – Haflong(1N) – Dawki – Cherrapunji(1N) – Shillong(2) – Guwahati

Photo of Bucket List - 10 Road Trips to Cover All of India 19/21 by Pragmatic Traveller

To explore all the hidden gems in one go, a road trip of 2000 km passing through all major states of north east india is perfect. It will definitely take a long of time as traveling after sunset is not advisable except near Shillong.

Photo of Bucket List - 10 Road Trips to Cover All of India 21/21 by Pragmatic Traveller

A trip from Guwahati to Tawang is a challenge in itself as weather conditions are extreme and you will find very few resources on the way. This region is volatile so better have a good knowledge of current affairs in the region and do not be too dependent on internet.

All above trips are designed with a proper research and analysis. However each circuit needs a detailed preparation of your own. Road trips always need some advance preparation for your vehicle, family and your own self (driver). You can also plan partial circuits and remaining destinations can be covered in during next trip as life is long and we have to keep traveling no matter what. Some areas of Gujarat, MP, UP, West Bengal & Orissa are not included in any of the trips because it consists of individual tourist spots which are difficult to link with each other but small trips of Araku Valley, Rann of Kutch, Golden Triangle of Agra, Puri and Kolkata and cultural circuit of Kashi, Khajuraho & Sanchi can also be planned with very little amount of research.

Happy Travelling!

Partnership

We want to connect with as many Indian bloggers and brands as possible! If you would like to join for a part of the trip – welcome aboard!

You can be one of our local partners and/or sponsor and position yourself as such.

Travel and Lifestyle bloggers (small or big), local news media, press, news sites, online or print magazines, we are looking to partner with you all. The more the better. With a big enough momentum (on social media and on the blogosphere), we will be able to help cross-promote each other and as well as reach a bigger audience).

Partnerships are powerful and work as accelerators. The goal of the partnership is to build momentum and to leverage the attention of our combined audience to create meaningful social impact.

Everyone needs something. We have to give what “our partners” need. In return, we get what we need.

Our partners need “interesting stories” to share with their audience and “growth in audience number”. We can bring both to the table. Newsworthy stories, full of inspiration, suspense, adventure, emotions, and social impact!

On our end, we need money and access to your platform. Money for hotels, rental cars, drivers, flights, and coffee (yes, lots of coffee). We’ll need access to your social platform so we can share this spirit of adventure and madness with a large group of India’s young population.

all india tour in car

From self-drive motorbike adventures to tips on hiring a car and driver, here are the best road trips in India © Solovyova / Getty Images

In India, every journey is an experience, whether you rumble across the subcontinent on a classic Enfield motorcycle or rattle through the hills in a chartered 4WD.

The simple act of traveling from A to B will immerse you in the sights , sounds and sensations of the world’s most colorful country. Plenty of people get around  by bus and train, but taking a road trip will give you extra control over your itinerary, letting you choose where to stop and which route to follow.

The good news is that you don’t need to drive yourself – it’s easy to hire a car or 4WD with a driver almost everywhere in India , meaning you can concentrate on the scenery while your driver deals with the sometimes challenging road conditions.

If you prefer to take the driving seat, renting a motorcycle is a wonderful way to explore the subcontinent, particularly if you stick to the backroads. Self-drive car rental is harder to arrange, but some adventurous souls travel around India with their own vehicles – a few hardy travelers have even navigated India in a modified autorickshaw!

Grab your sense of adventure and get ready to hit the road with this guide to the best road trips in India.

A magnificent red-stone fort with people walking in its gates

1. India’s Golden Triangle

Best road trip for Mughal monuments Delhi–Delhi; 1120km (696 miles); allow five days

Short and sweet, the loop from  Delhi to  Agra and  Jaipur packs a lot of wonders into a few days of driving. Your adventure begins in Delhi, where the ruins of eight cities tell the story of India’s great Islamic empires. Hit  the city's highlights , including Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb, the Jama Masjid and the bazaars of Chandni Chowk, which have changed only superficially since Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s time.

With a chartered vehicle or rented motorcycle, it’s easy to swing by the sacred cities of Mathura and Vrindavan, where Krishna frolicked with milkmaids in the Hindu epics. After these peaceful stops, steel yourself for a mix of the stressful and sublime in Agra, where the glorious  Taj Mahal more than lives up to its reputation.

Find more Mughal magnificence at nearby  Fatehpur Sikri , the red sandstone city founded and later abandoned by emperor Akbar the Great. Once you follow the NH21 to Jaipur, you’ll share every fort, palace and mystical observatory with a crowd, so consider making the odd detour before you hit the Pink City’s palaces and bazaars.

Detour: Before zooming west from Fatehpur Sikri to Jaipur, consider a detour south to  Gwalior , whose beautiful fort is less mobbed than other stops on this circuit. Before you complete the third side of the triangle, tack on one more detour to spot tigers stalking ruined battlements in  Ranthambhore National Park before diving back into urban life.

2. Manali to Ladakh across the Himalaya

Best road trip for silence and serenity Manali–Srinagar; 800km (497 miles); allow ten days

Many people follow the mountain circuit from  Manali to  Ladakh and on to  Kashmir in a chartered 4WD, but we strongly recommend traveling by rented Enfield Bullet motorcycle. This allows you the life-affirming thrill of pulling over by the roadside to find yourself alone in the silence of these high-altitude deserts in the rain shadow of the Himalayas.

From the hippie hill resort of Manali, it’s a two-day slog over the 3978m (13,051ft)  Rohtang La to  Leh , through a landscape plucked straight from the heyday of the Silk Road. There’s little vegetation and even less shade, and the cold and altitude will hit you like a sledgehammer. Recuperate with trips to Buddhist monasteries and yoga classes in Leh, then hit the road again for a different take on the Himalayas in Kashmir.

The highway west to  Srinagar weaves between ancient villages, but as the hills turn from dust-yellow to lush green, the culture shifts from Buddhism to Islam before the minarets of Srinagar loom into view. The Kashmir valley is sometimes troubled, but when it’s calm, the experience of watching  Dal Lake appearing slowly through the morning mist from the deck of a houseboat is simply sublime.

Planning tip: Whether you drive yourself or let someone else take the wheel, it's imperative to respect the mountain climate. Snow closes the high passes into Ladakh in winter, and road travel is usually only possible from June to late September or early October.

A camel draws a cart on a road through a desert landscape

3. Rajasthan’s colored cities

Best road trip for desert colors Jaipur–Jaipur; 1630km (1012 miles); allow ten days

Desert driving in  Rajasthan is an incredible experience. Mighty fortresses loom dramatically out of the landscape, and you’ll share the dusty highways with camel carts and old-timers, some with vividly colored turbans and handsome mustaches. Kick-off in  Jaipur – the pink city – touring pink-sandstone palaces, bustling bazaars and the awe-inspiring fortress at  Amber .

Follow NH48 to the Jain and Muslim pilgrimage center of  Ajmer , and duck west to reach the famous  Pushkar , with its temple-circled lake and  legendary camel fair in October or November. Return to NH48 for the rumbling ride to  Udaipur , the white city – draped like a silk scarf on the shores of tranquil Lake Pichola. Dose up on ice-white palaces, then deviate west to the temple-strewn hill station of  Mt Abu .

Veering north to  Jodhpur , you’ll immediately spot the lapis-colored buildings that earned the Blue City its name. Get another blast of military might at  Mehrangarh Fort , then drive west through serious desert country to the sand-yellow city of  Jaisalmer , whose fortified walls look almost carved from the desert itself. Close off the loop via  Bikaner , where you’ll leave the tourist crowds behind before diving back into the thick of things in Jaipur.

Detour: Having your own transport opens up the opportunity to get off the tourist track in this heavily visited state. Consider tacking on a side-trip north from Jaipur to Shekhawati, famed for its mural-filled haveli mansions.

4. Hampi and the Hoysalas

Best road trip for temples Mysuru–Gokarna; 1060km (659 miles); allow ten days

For many travelers, visiting the time-tumbled ruins of the Vijayanagar kingdom at  Hampi is the  most memorable experience  during a trip to India. Start off in  Mysuru (formerly Mysore), with its mesmerizing markets, fiery vegetarian cuisine and famously extravagant  palace . Rumble north on the backroads to fascinating Sravanabelagola with its naked 17m (56ft) statue of  Gomateshvara , the first tirthankara  (spiritual teacher) of the Jain religion.

The temples just keep on coming in Karnataka. Slingshot through Hassan to Belur and Halebid, where the  temples of the Hoysala Empire represent perhaps the zenith of the Hindu temple-building art. A three-hour drive east will drop you in Karnataka’s capital,  Bengaluru , known for its cosmopolitan dining, shopping and nightlife. Enjoy its comforts; it’s a long drive to reach Hosapete, the leaping-off point for the ruins at Hampi.

Once you roll into Hampi’s centuries-old bazaar, allow at least two days to explore toppled temples and time travel across centuries in a landscape of stacked granite boulders. For more timeless temple architecture, duck onto the backroads to reach Badami, where blood-colored cliffs are pock-marked with  cave temples .

Detour: To mix things up, consider taking a side trip to Aihole, dotted with dusty ruins from the ancient Chalukya kingdom, then finish on the beach with some well-earned R&R in  Gokarna  – part pilgrim-town, part beach retreat.

5. Kolkata to Darjeeling

Best road trip for Himalayan views and side treks Kolkata–Yuksom; 808km (502 miles); allow eight days

The east of India is often overlooked by the crowds who surge north from Delhi, but the journey through West Bengal to the foothills of 8586m (28,169ft) Mt Khangchendzonga has an epic sense of mission. Start in crowded but cultured  Kolkata , visiting ashrams, temples and striking civic buildings reclaimed from British rule. Fit in a tour of the tiger-stalked swamps of the  Sunderbans before you head for the hills.

The journey north takes you past little-visited country towns to intriguing  Shantiniketan , a university town with a long history of dance, theater and poetry. From here, you’ll break north to reach the emerald-green tea plantations and delightfully dated grand hotels of  Darjeeling , where you’ll likely catch your first up-close views of the Himalayas.

To get intimate with the snow peaks, walk the Singalila Ridge trekking route or edge even closer to Mt Khangchendzonga by picking up a permit to enter lofty  Sikkim . A route through  Kalimpong ,  Gangtok and Pelling will reveal views that would make mountaineers itch for their ice axes. To cap it all off, you can get within touching distance of the snow on the trek to the Goecha La from Yuksom.

Planning tip: You’ll need a Restricted Areas Permit to enter Sikkim, but this is easily obtained in Kolkata, Siliguri or Darjeeling, or when crossing into Sikkim at Melli or Rangpo.

Cars and other vehicles are a blur on the streets of Mumbai

6. Mumbai to Goa

Best road trip for beaches Mumbai–Palolem; 650km (404 miles); allow one week

Short journeys don’t mean scrimping on excitement in India. From brash and brilliant  Mumbai , pick up NH66 and head south, detouring down to the coast to explore fascinating forts such as  Murud-Janjira , a legacy of centuries of coastal conquest. Pull into the low-key seaside resorts at Ganpatipule and Malvan before you hit the busy beaches of  Goa .

As you roll into northern Goa, swing by the famous market in  Anjuna and the fun-filled beach hubs at  Baga and Calangute . Head onward to  Panaji , Goa’s charming Portuguese-colonial capital, and the timeworn basilicas of  Old Goa .

The mood changes as you roll south to laid-back  Agonda , the center of Goa’s nascent surfing scene. It changes again as you head inland through green hills dotted with spice farms for a peek at thundering  Dudhsagar Falls , India’s second-highest cascade. Finish up on the sand-sprinkled shore at lovely  Palolem (making time for a bird-spotting  hike at the nearby  Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary ).

7. A drive through the northeast

Best road trip for tribal encounters Guwahati–Guwahati; 1700km (1056 miles); allow two weeks

With a hired 4WD and a driver who can speak local languages, a fascinating journey through the varied cultures of the northeast states awaits. Start in  Guwahati , the under-explored capital of Assam, and follow the mighty Brahmaputra River northeast to  Kaziranga National Park for close encounters with one-horned Indian rhinos.

Next, aim your sights north towards  Arunachal Pradesh and the awesome  Buddhist monasteries of the Tawang Valley (local travel agencies can arrange a permit).

Add on a wander through the tribal communities of Ziro and Daporijo, and loop back through Upper Assam, continuing east to the fascinating Konyak Naga villages around Mon in northern  Nagaland . Slip back to the plains via Kohima (ideally in December to catch the  Hornbill Festival ), then climb up onto the high plateau of  Meghalaya , where trees are woven into living bridges and markets sell bows and arrows as day-to-day essentials, before barrelling downhill from  Shillong to Guwahati.

Planning tip: A Protected Area Permit is required to enter Arunachal Pradesh, and you may need to be in a group of two or more to visit some areas; contact travel agencies in Guwahati in advance to get the paperwork in place.

A road runs through lush green tea plantations

8. Around the tip of India

Best road trip in the south Kochi–Kochi; 807km (501 miles); allow 7 days

The bottom end of India feels like a different country. Start the journey through India’s steamy south in historic  Kochi , whose ancient streets tell a timeless tale of seafaring, trade and Keralan spices. As you roam south to  Alappuzha , park up for a day or two to explore the fascinating, waterlogged backwaters by boat.

As you pass through Amrithapuri, you can pause for a hug from a living guru before soaking up some rays on  Kerala ’s loveliest beaches at  Varkala . Next, whoosh through  Thiruvananthapuram (pause just long enough for some incendiary Keralan curries) to the southern tip of India. From here, you’ll head inland, through drier, rockier Tamil Nadu, to reach  Madurai , whose temple towers are encrusted with brightly colored deities and demons.

The trip back to Kochi will take you through the Palani Hills, a side spur of the Western Ghats, where the landscape surges upwards to  Kodaikanal , perhaps the most charming of India’s southern hill stations. Grab a cuppa amidst swirling tea plantations in  Munnar , South India’s top tea-growing center, before you return to the coast.

Planning tip: The monsoon obscures the views from the Western Ghats from June to September, but waterfalls run at full force, so this is still a rewarding time to come.

9. Chennai to Puducherry (Pondicherry)

Best road trip for cultural variety Chennai–Puducherry; 232km (144 miles); allow 3 to 4 days

For a short, sweet and spicy trip along India’s southeast coast, consider the three-day trip from  Chennai south to  Puducherry (Pondicherry) . Start in Chennai, with its vast beach, famous-name ashrams and  delicious vegetarian cuisine , then track south along the coast, wedged between the sea and the salt lake.

Stop one is the surprising surf resort at Kovalam (Covelong), a worthy stop en route to  Mamallapuram , where you can view a riot of carvings and temples created by the Pallava dynasty. Duck inland to see the ancient Pallava capital at  Kanchipuram , then return to the coast to close out the trip at charming Puducherry, formerly Pondicherry.

A Gallic air pervades this seaside town – best experienced in heritage hotels in the old French Quarter. Just be warned: some spiritually-minded travelers pull into the famous ashram at  Auroville just north of "Pondy" and never leave!

Top tips for hiring a car and driver in India

You’ll find drivers-for-hire offering their services at taxi and 4WD stands all over India, or you can make arrangements through hotels and travel agencies. Check that the driver speaks enough English to understand where you want to go and where you want to stop, and confirm that the driver is able to cross state lines – some vehicles are only licensed to operate in certain areas.

You’ll need to agree on a price for the trip before you start, and the cost should include fuel, accommodation and food for the driver for multi-day trips. Prices start at around US$40 per day, rising for 4WD vehicles. Be clear with your driver about what you want from your journey; if you want to avoid stops at tourist shops and commission-paying venues, make this clear from the outset.

Exploring India by motorcycle or bike is for experienced riders

India’s roads are not for fair-weather motorcyclists, but if you have a few miles under your belt and fancy a challenge, it’s a fabulous way to explore this enormous country. Veteran hire companies such as  Lalli Singh Tours in  Delhi have sent hundreds of travelers off on journeys across India, from the steamy southern jungles to the high passes of the Himalayas.

The best advice we can give is to ride slowly and defensively, always give way to larger vehicles, and carry a full repair kit and spares – and know how to use them! The nostalgic British-designed Enfield Bullet is the vehicle of choice for many travelers, but it’s a heavy brute; newer machines from the likes of Bajaj are lighter and easier to handle.

If you plan to pedal your way around India by bicycle, carry plenty of puncture repair kits and bring lights and high visibility gear. If you don’t want to transport your own bike into the country, consider flying into Delhi and buying a bike at the Jhandewalan Cycle Market.

Travel Routes through India: Explore India in 4 weeks

Last Updated on November 21, 2023

Travelling in India for a month? This article will explore travel routes through India in one month. The famous saying goes, ‘a life time is not enough to explore all of India’ , and rightly so. Therefore, we suggest that one month in India is the least amount of time you would want to spend here.

There is no single best route to travel across India, so we have provided 5 different routes. Each outline covers 4 weeks in India and includes an overview of the routes, the destinations, the highlights, and the modes of travel.

The suggested routes are moderate to fast-paced trips, that contain the drawbacks of the tours. They also have an approximate indicative budget for each route, going from backpackers to luxury travellers. You can compare different routes of travelling in India and see what you should be prepared to miss out on. The E-Visa and Visa On Arrival have made India a much simpler place to get to for travellers wanting to visit India.

travel routes through India – route 1: the classic north and south

Route 1: delhi – varanasi – agra – jaipur – jaisalmer – jodhpur – udaipur – mumbai – goa – hampi – kerala ( route on googlemaps ).

This travel route through India is one of the most popular month-long routes for travellers, especially with backpackers . This route has you starting in the historically rich capital of Delhi. Head east to visit Varanasi, one of the oldest continually inhabited cities known to civilization. Travel west to visit the Taj Mahal, and then loop around the desert state of Rajasthan.

While traveling in India, you’ll get to explore cities rich in culture and character in Rajasthan (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur). You can also take part in the Camel Safari & the Desert Camp in Jaisalmer. End the northern leg of your trip in Udaipur before taking a bus or flight to Mumbai. Travelling to the South is more relaxing, as you’ll be travelling along the same coast as Mumbai . Relax on the beaches in Goa. Explore the boulders and rice fields of the time-bound Hampi. Visit the beautiful state of Kerala known for its backwaters and its tea plantations.

Depending on when you are looking to travel, this travel route through India can be quite busy. This is one of the most frequented routes by travellers wanting to visit India. If you plan on picking it, we suggest you ensure all your transport and accommodation is booked well in advance .

Since all these places are popular among tourists, it’s likely you will bump into more than a few on this trip. While that isn’t always a bad thing, but if you’d like to avoid the crowds we’d suggest you travel a little early (mid July – September) .   While the North would have great weather, the South would be wet, but beautiful.

Backpacker! Boutique! or mix and match, we can help you plan a well thought and cost effective month across India.

Cost of a four week tour across North and South India?

In terms of backpacking – dorm beds, day and overnight trains and a possible flight – you could potentially do this tour for as little as 700 EUR. Together, we can cater to your budget when booking hotels and modes of transport. Travelling in India isn’t extremely expensive in regards to spending money, for example, the food is cheap yet healthy.

Kannur waters

route 2: a glimpse of the mountains

Route 2: delhi – dharamshala – amritsar – rishikesh – delhi – jaipur – jaisalmer – jodhpur – udaipur – pushkar – agra – varanasi ( route on googlemaps ).

Being home to a billion people, a million Gods and plenty of wacky rituals, India is also home to the incredible Himalayas. This is the best possible travel route for people who have only a month in India and want to combine their trip to India with a trek in Nepal (Everest Base Camp/Annapoorna Mountain Pass).

You will begin your trip in Delhi, a city extremely central to some of the most prominent locations in North India. From here on, head north to Dharamshala (home to the Dalai Lama), followed by Amritsar (known for the beautiful Golden Temple) and Rishikesh (the Yoga capital of the world, also known for its adventure sports).

After Rishikesh, you come back to Delhi before heading southwest, this time in to Rajasthan. Start with the state’s three gems – Jaipur, Jodhpur & Udaipur – before visiting Pushkar and Agra and then taking an overnight train to Varanasi. Varanasi is quite intense, it’s one of the oldest civilizations in the world and also a great place to end your trip in India. If you’re up for an adventurous assault on the senses, you can take a bus from Varanasi into Nepal.

Luxury Getaways: Hotels in India

Like the first route, this is also extremely popular among travellers, so if you decide to take it, you might want to book your train tickets well in advance. It is a hectic route, so we would recommend it to active travellers.

Apart from that, this is a good route to cover three regions (the Himalayas, Rajasthan and Varanasi) in the month you have in India.

Here’s what our guests who travelled to India with us had to say.

Cost of a mountain tour in India

Again if you plan to backpack, take train and buses you can do the tour for as little as 600 EUR/ 700 USD per person. You would want to double your budget to travel comfortably.

route 3: Exploring the south

Route 3: mumbai – goa – hampi – mysore – bangalore – chennai/pondicherry – trichy/thanjavur – madurai –  munnar – thekkady – alleppey – kochi – varkala ( route on googlemaps ).

As a country, India has a myriad of facets and each region is often drastically different from the last. This travel route through India (the South) will be extremely gratifying – a full trip in itself.

Fly into Mumbai and head South to the fabulous beach state of Goa. Next, you can catch a bus or train to the evergreen Hampi and then spread out across Karnataka from royal Mysore to urban Bangalore before moving southeast to Chennai. Take a long break in Francophile Pondicherry or break it up with the southern spice of Trichy and Madurai. End the trip on the beach in Varkala or carry on to the stunning hill station of Munnar, and the backwaters in Alleppey.

For more detailed information about the best things to do in the South of India , read our blogs. Drawbacks South India is a beautiful region to explore, but it is slightly more expensive compared to the North. Flying into Mumbai and staying there can be quite expensive. There aren’t too many budget options in the South, even though there has been a rise in the number of hostels. It’s also sometimes convenient in the South to hire a car to get from one place to another, which racks up a higher bill than buses.

Plan your journey from the US to India with this helpful resource

route 4: mix it up in south india

Route 4 :  mumbai – goa – hampi – mysore – wayanad – calicut – kochi – munnar – thekkady – alleppey – varkala ( route on googlemaps ).

This route, like the previous one, is all about exploring South India. However, while traveling in India on this route, you will not be travelling southeast. You’ll fly into Mumbai and head South to Goa, Hampi and Mysore before crossing into Kerala and spending the rest of your days exploring God’s own country.

This route is more relaxed and moves at a slower pace than the others, giving you time to soak in the beauty of the South without dropping dead from exhaustion. Getting from Mumbai to Goa to Hampi by bus is not tough, but if you throw in a few trains and maybe a car hire, it’ll be easier.

ROUTE 5: THE NORTH AND THE NORTH EAST

Route 5 :  delhi – bagdogra – gangtok – ravangla – pelling – namchi – darjeeling – kolkata – varanasi – khajuraho – orchha – agra – jaipur – jaisalmer – jodhpur – udaipur – pushkar – delhi ( route on googlemaps ).

The Himalayas, the Taj Mahal and the serene backwaters are a few things that people associate with India. And rightly so! However, India is also home to the divine but underrated Northeast, a virtual paradise nestled in the out-flung arm of the country. So when travelling in India remember this gem as well.

If you are looking to go off the beaten track, this is a great travel route for you to take . Travel through Bagdogra, Gangtok, Ravangla , Pelling, Namchi and Darjeeling, then make your way west to Kolkata; one of the oldest metros in the country. From there you can catch a train to Varanasi, then move through Khajuraho (known for it’s erotic temples), Orchha (the quintessential Indian town), Agra and Rajasthan, before heading back to Delhi.

Apart from being diverse, India is also simply large. You may have to take a few flights, Delhi – Badgogra, or Bagdogra – Kolkata to save time, since there is only a month and so much to see and do in it. Travelling in the Northeast could be slightly more expensive as the local transport, though very economical, is inconsistent with its timings. You may want to trade some of your other luxuries on the trip for a comfortable car ride.

Places like Khajuraho and Orchha are beautiful places to visit, but make sure you’ve made travel arrangements in advance. There is a dearth of options and not very great connectivity either.

Further, depending on the time of year you are planning to travel, the North and Northeast can get pretty cold, especially in the mountains. Hey. My name is Callum and I found your blog through Hippie in Heels. Me and my girlfriend are heading to India for a month is September so this article is super interesting and helpful.

I was wondering if you think that if would be possible to see some of Kerala (flying in from Sri Lanka), before heading north to Mumbai eventually flying to Delhi to explore the surrounding area and some of Rajasthan? Having not been to the country I wouldn’t want to rush it or overlook certain areas by fitting too much in.

Any feedback would be appreciated 🙂

Hi Callum, We are so sorry we missed this comment. If you travel for one month you can certainly combine the south and north of India but it might be a little rushed. But that depends on how many destinations you visit in each region and how you travel in between the regions. Be in touch and we can figure it out together: [email protected]

Best, Your India Someday Team

Hi. Route 1 lookjs great. Is this based on pr8vate transport or public. Also, woukd going to pondicherry after kerala be doable. What cities would fly into and out of?

Hi Michelle,

We can plan any transport and according to any budget you like. Pondicherry after Kerala would only be possible with another domestic flight to Chennai, everything else would take too long. Get in touch with us to plan your trip and we figure something out for you.

The drive would also be a wonderful experience as the roads are in great conditions offering a smooth driving experience. We recommend taking the RJ SH 19, which is the best route to travel to Jaiselmer from the pink city of Jaipur. You can stop at Jodhpur for some refreshments as your car would need to fill up too. 13. Delhi to Agra through Yamuna Expressway

Distance : 233 KM

National Highways : Taj Express Highway

A seldom mentioned long drive from the heart of the capital city to the city of the Taj, Agra is definitely one of the best road trip stretches! The Yamuna Expressway is probably the best road in the entire country, its long and wide and in perfect conditions for that hassle free driving experience, a must visit for all lovers of the road. This is an easy day trip from the capital city, where you can visit the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort and other areas and still be back to your cozy bed by the night.

The good road conditions make it easy to cover the 165 km of the route in a couple of hours. However, getting to the expressway from the city itself takes a drive of 60 km which should easily add another hour to your trip or even more. A good tip to keep in mind is to check your tire air pressure, fast driving on the road can cause too much heat that often causes tires to burst and can be dangerous. So, it is ideal to keep the tire air pressure filled at less than normal levels.

Another point to note is to pack in as much food and snacks and beverages as necessary because there are no delicious dhabas lining the expressway. There are a few small eateries that sell snacks after the toll gate, but they are not comparable to the cozy atmosphere and the filling food available in the dhabas.

50 Days Travel India Route Map

Here is the detailed itinerary of travelling in India in 50 days that starts from New Delhi and ends.

Akshardham Temple Delhi

Day 1: Arrive in New Delhi

After you reach the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, by morning, drive right away to your hotel. There are countless budget to luxury hotels near New Delhi airport and hence even if you have not booked in advance… you can go for current booking. Try out butter chicken with butter Naan and Lassi at lunch if you want to wake up your carnivore nature straight away on day one. But if you want to stick to some veg menu, then go for sahi paneer and butter naan with falooda, one of the popular local beverages of India. Burp! And then you head for Akshardham Temple, which is the largest Hindu temple in the world that displays millennia of traditional Hindu and Indian culture, spirituality, and architecture. Stay back at Akshardham to experience the musical fountain show and thereafter drive back to your hotel. If you are not looking for a posh wine and dine… then go for Murgh Musallam and have some chapatti. Burp! Goodnight.

Overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: New Delhi sightseeing and Then Drive to Dharamshala

After chai (tea) and breakfast (go for puri and sabzi… Ah! Just one tasty Indian brunch wheel to Old Delhi and step inside the Jama Masjid, which is the principal mosque of Old Delhi and the largest mosque in India. It was built in the year 1656 AD by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Thereafter experience the clamour of Chandni Chowk, the old marketplace of Shah Jahanabad now a picturesque bazaar. If you are done exploring the traditional colours of Old Delhi, take a rickshaw to Red Fort , which is another red sandstone architecture built in the year 1648 by Shah Jahan. Don’t miss out on a lunch at Karim’s if you are a hardcore non-veg. If you want to go for veg… then check out some parathas at Parathe Wale Gali.

In New Delhi, visit Raj Ghat , which is a memorial to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. It is a simple black marble platform that marks the spot of his cremation on 31 January 1948. Further, drive past India Gate, a memorial built in the year 1931 to commemorate the Indian soldiers who died in the World War I & Afghan Wars. From India Gate , drive to Humayun’s Tomb, which is a memorial of Mughal Emperor Humayun, built in the year 1562. The complex is a World Heritage Site and the first example of this type of Mughal architecture in India. Also visit Qutub Minar , built in the year 1206 by Qutub-ud-din Aibek. It is the tallest (72m) brick minaret in the world, an important example of Indo-Islamic Architecture. Qutub Minar and its monuments are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s time to move out from New Delhi and get ready for a nomadic life in the Indian Himalaya. The overnight drive to Dharmshala starts at 9 around p.m. and hence it’s your choice where and when you are going to have your dinner. I will recommend trying out Tandoor parantha with kali dal at the Murthal Dhaba, which is one of the famous highways dhabas of Indiaand located on National Highway 1 close to Karnal.

Overnight drive to Dharamshala.

Day 3: Arrive at Dharamshala and go on a sightseeing spree

Dharamshala-McLeodganj

Welcome to the abode of the Dalai Lama. At around 8 in the morning, you will be arriving at Dharmshala and thereafter proceed to your hotel. Dharamshala has everything for a perfect holiday. It is full of life and yet peaceful. Covering a wide area in the form of twin settlement, Lower Dharmsala (1,380m) is a busy commercial centre. Upper Dharmsala (1,830m) which includes the suburbs of Mcleodganj and Forsytheganj retains a British flavour and colonial lifestyle.

In the morning visit the Namgyal Monastery; an atmosphere of tranquility and solace surrounds it making it the perfect place for a rejuvenating sojourn in the hills. Apart from the gorgeous vistas and the prevailing serenity, Mcleodganj is frequently visited by those interested in learning Tibetan Buddhism, culture and crafts; it is also an ideal destination to pack your bags with exquisite Tibetan handicrafts, Tibetan carpets, garments and other trinkets.

Overnight stay at the hotel.

Our top 5 things to do in India

Let Trafalgar guide your India vacation through a majestic tapestry of landmarks and experience. From the Taj Mahal to the tiger parks of Rajasthan, these are just some of the soul-stirring moments waiting when you travel with us.

National Museum

India vacation tours get under the skin of the country's culture with a trip to the National Museum of New Delhi. Roam the halls and take in elaborate jewellery, ancient manuscripts and traditional miniature paintings on cloth. From the prehistoric to the modern, this expansive Indian museum is a must-visit.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

The King Shivaji museum, or CSMVS, is a pride of Mumbai showcasing around 50,000 exhibitions within an impressive Indo-gothic building. After taking in archaeology, art and natural history, spend time in the tranquil, flower-filled gardens that contrast the bustle of Mumbai.

City Palace

Taking almost 400 years to be built, the City Palace of Udaipur is an architectural masterpiece beside Lake Pichola. Enter the museum section of the palace complex via the royal courtyard, allowing plenty of time to immerse in the artefacts of India's distant past.

Best museums in India

Step off the streets and find a moment of quiet in a spellbinding museum. Here are just a few of the places we will visit in India to peel back the many layers of culture.

A thin fried bread mentioned in 12th-century Sanskrit scriptures, paratha is part of India's cultural heritage. Try it stuffed with spinach, fenugreek and the cheese of paneer, or take it on its own for lapping up the leftover gravy from a delectable curry.

Varan Bhaat Diva

Popular along the sunny coastline of Goa, Varan Bhaat Diva is Indian comfort food of peas, beans, rice and many spices. Often given to those who are exhausted or sick, you will feel soothed by the warmth and turmeric in this family favorite.

Chicken cafreal

Inspired by the dishes brought from Portugal during colonial times, the herb coated chicken legs of cafreal will cement your infatuation with Indian cuisine. Shallow fried and often served with potato and wedges of citrus fruit, India tour packages aren't complete until cafreal is served.

Best food in India

Despite the many famous dishes that have journeyed far from the lands of India, this country still has culinary delights that will rouse your tastebuds. From warm bread to fragrant curries, we'll guide you through the secrets of this spicy land.

What to pack for India

People packing for a tour

A few good books

The Indian rail network chuffs for 65,000 kilometres around India. A geographically large company with relatively slow transport systems, a few books can keep you entertained between admiring scenery.

Light and modest clothing

Though India does get cooler than most expect, many parts of the year are intensely hot. Pack sheer, light clothing that covers you right to the ankles, wrists and neck so that you can respectfully visit religious sites without sweltering.

Medication for stomach upsets

Though our India group tours will see you largely protected from unsanitary food or water, it is still handy to keep a supply of medication on hand. Charcoal tablets can be taken daily as a preventive measure to ensure any nasties are quickly expelled from your system.

Water purification devices

The purification of water has come a long way in recent years. Make your way to a specialist travel shop to discuss bottles, gadgets and tablets that will ensure you stay hydrated without falling ill.

Wet wipes and hand sanitiser

True to its reputation, India can be a hot and messy place. Pack wet wipes and hand sanitiser to ensure you feel fresh when you're on the go.

“Solo in Agra” I had a driver Mr Gurmeet and tour guide Mr Sameer and they were both great. Mr Gurmeet was lovely! He made sure there was always a water bottle for me in the car and he also had a bowl of sweets, hand wipes, tissues.. so considerate of my comfort. Mr Sameer was very knowledgeable and gave me great insight into the places that we visited. Definitely, recommend 🙂 Vicki – New Zealand Agra: Full-Day City Tour with Taj Mahal Read More Testimonials
“Pretty good tour guide” Very nice tour guide and very informative. Also totally responsible for our schedule. Cornelius – Malaysia Agra: Full-Day City Tour with Taj Mahal Read More Testimonials
“A great day in Agra” It was a very informative and comfortable tour to The Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and The Baby Taj. Was very well planned by the local tour guide and we were always in time but never in a hurry. Our guide was very experienced and told many new things about all the monuments, history of the city etc. We were always given extra time for clicking pics and enjoying our time at the monuments. Lunch was in a good restaurant and we enjoyed it. Overall a great activity. Prasad – India Agra: Full-Day City Tour with Taj Mahal Read More Testimonials

“Prompt and well customisable service.” We where picked up from our hotel promptly as promised, then driven to see Taj Mahal at the sunrise. Afterwards we where able to customise our plans for rest of the day. Service where courteous and very informative. Juha – United Kingdom Agra: Full-Day City Tour with Taj Mahal Read More Testimonials
“Perfect day” The program was ideal: sunrise at the taj - breakfast at the hotel - Agra fort - baby taj - rest at the hotel - sunset: the taj seen from a pontoon (excellent suggestion from the guide). The guide (Sameer, of Kaiser Holidays) was very good, explained well, but without overdoing it. I can recommend him to anybody visiting Agra. And Kaimur Holidays organized everything without a singe glitch. Mark – Switzerland Agra: Full-Day City Tour with Taj Mahal Read More Testimonials
“Very well organised” Great day out, worth a visit to the Taj Mahal at least once in a lifetime Richard – United Kingdom Day Trip to Agra from Delhi: Taj Mahal and Agra Fort Read More Testimonials
“Incredible and fantastic” Booked my trip with ultra short notice, which was no problem. The driver, Raquesh (?), turned up pn time at 06:00 a.m. to collect me from my hotel in Delhi. His English was limited, although we could communicate. He was a great driver. The car was airconditioned. Upon arrival Nazeem (?) welcomed us. Saw the awesome Taj Mahal and "baby Taj Mahal" as well as Agra Fort. All of this just incredible. Thereafter we went to a marble shop, not a souvenir shop, as you would probably expect. This was a marble / precious stone very small workshop, where they produced the beautiful marble pieces covered with precious stones. Items were fantastic and for some maybe a bit expensive. A large item weighting more than 50 kg, was sold at USD 27000. I bought a mug with 819 extremely tiny precious stones (29 different stones and colours), all meticulously input into the carvings on the mug by hand. I paid several hundred USD for this fantastic mug. The return trip to Delhi went smoothly. “THIS TOUR WAS AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE!” Our guides were so informative, all very smart with masters degrees in Indian History and English. Our driver, Puri was so kind and efficient and catered to our needs 100%. The guides and driver got us to and from every location promptly. We got to see every sight we planned on seeing and more. We felt very safe and were treated like royalty. This tour is unique because every thing is customizable. We were able to plan out exactly what we wanted to do each day, where we wanted to stay, where we wanted to have meals, etc. and the company followed suit. Our driver and guides quickly transformed from strangers to family. We had a nice dinner with our guide Shan Ali and our driver Puri in Agra where we learned about indian culture and foods, which you don't get in a normal superficial golden triangle tour. It was more intimate and friendly, rather than guided and stiff. I highly recommend this tour for anyone looking for a bang for their buck. We are so thankful for this opportunity! 🙂 Kyle – Atlantic Beach, United States Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur: 4-Day Golden Triangle Tour Read More Testimonials
“Ashok and Shanu get all the credit!” First of all, it was so great to get a phone call reminder and a text confirmation with the driver information the day before. Equally was my amazing driver Ashok being right on time. He did an incredible job on our journey, sharing stories of India, historical spots and more. As soon as we got to Agra, we met Shanu who was an exceptional guide. He is knowledgable, easy going and great to share the experience with. he indulged me with a few selfies, too. Recommend to anyone if you're in the area and will cross my fingers that you get as lucky as I did with Ashok and Shanu. “A wonderful way to see and experience 2 beautiful cities in 3 days!” I recently came back from my trip with Kaimur Holidays, and I was so impressed by their efficient service and generous attitude. I felt well taken care of and the company was easily accessible via Whatsapp so I didn't have to worry. I really got to experience the life and culture of India during those few days, and the boat ride at sunrise on the Ganges River in Varanasi was breathtaking. My long time dream of seeing the Taj Mahal has finally been fulfilled, and it was a blessing to have an English speaking guide tell us about the story behind Agra Fort, Baby Taj, and Taj Mahal. The restaurants they took us to had good and clean Indian food, many other tourists could be seen there as well. The overnight train ride was an unforgettable experience, with air conditioning and pull out loft beds to sleep on while enjoying the Indian scenery. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with the personal customer care I received, and felt thankful for their flexibility. I recommend others to try! “Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!” We Had an amazing day with our tour guide and he was super easygoing. When we changed our minds and didn’t wanna do one activity he had no problem of changing the plans, he basically took us wherever we wanted and got to see a super nice fabric and jewelry store and also a nice dinner and when we wanted a break they dropped us at the hostel and picked us up later. I would deffo reccommend this since it’s so chilled and they go by what you want to do! And the Taj Mahal experience is so much better with a guide because you don’t get any history otherwise. And Agra can be a bit shit to get around but we were driven in a nice car with AC and that was appreciated , we even got water from our guide. He’s was an awesome guy! We booked for 2 but had a friend wanting to join and there was no problem. The “authentic Indian breakfast” was super nice... spicy and real!! Would never have gone there if it wasn’t for this tour. Zwickau, a city in Germany’s east, may not be as famous as Detroit, but its economy has revolved around internal combustion engines since August Horch established Audi here at the beginning of the 20th century.

So when Volkswagen announced in 2018 that it would convert its Zwickau factory, the largest private employer in the area, to manufacture nothing but electric vehicles, it was a big deal.

“A lot of people were skeptical,” said Michael Fuchs, who has worked at the factory for more than a quarter century. They wondered, “What’s going to happen?” he said.

Volkswagen shut down assembly lines churning out its popular Golf hatchbacks and converted the factory, which has its own exit on the autobahn, to make six electric models. The remodeled plant can produce a car a minute, shipping them out by train.

It was a rare case of a major car plant’s switching completely from internal combustion to battery power, making Zwickau a case study for a big question confronting the auto industry.

Electric vehicles have far fewer parts than gasoline cars — no radiators, exhaust pipes, fuel tanks, fan belts or complicated gearboxes. As a result, many autoworkers, executives and politicians have hypothesized that such cars would require fewer workers, leading to mass unemployment in factory towns and cities worldwide.

Zwickau, where more than 10,000 people work for Volkswagen and tens of thousands more for suppliers, appears to have avoided those dire consequences. Employment hasn’t fallen off a cliff, and suppliers of combustion vehicle parts haven’t been forced into bankruptcy en masse. Its experience offers some hopeful lessons for other places that depend on the auto industry.

Yet people in Zwickau, with its immaculate but sleepy downtown, are still uneasy.

While Zwickau’s experience suggests that conversion to electric vehicles will not itself lead to economic misery, this and other new technologies are shaking up the industry in ways that could still be very painful for established companies and their workers.

People walking on a sidewalk outside a Volkswagen plant.

One big change already visible in Germany and the rest of Europe is the fast growth of young Chinese electric carmakers like BYD and SAIC , which are increasingly luring customers away from established rivals like Volkswagen, the world’s second-largest automaker after Toyota.

“The question is: How much will mobility change overall?” said Thomas Knabel, who leads the Zwickau local of IG Metall, the union that represents Volkswagen workers. “In the future, will Volkswagen still be present?”

The best-selling electric car in Europe is Tesla’s Model Y sport utility vehicle, built at a factory around 145 miles north of Zwickau near Berlin. Last year, Volkswagen sold fewer than half as many of its equivalent S.U.V., the ID.4, according to Schmidt Automotive Research.

Disappointing sales have prompted Volkswagen to cut a shift on one of its two assembly lines in Zwickau, where the company makes the ID.4, the ID.5, two Audi models and two small electric cars. The decision illustrated the downside of going all-in on electric vehicles. Other established carmakers have hedged their bets, producing electric vehicles and fuel-burning cars in the same factories , allowing them to adjust to fluctuating sales.

“It’s a much more ambitious project than anything I know about in North America,” said Ian Greer, a research professor at Cornell University who has studied the region around Zwickau. “VW has taken a much bigger risk.”

With the factory operating below capacity, some people in Zwickau wonder whether Volkswagen’s electric vehicles are appealing enough.

Max Jankowsky, president of the regional Chamber of Commerce, said he was disappointed that he hadn’t seen any Volkswagens during a recent trip to Dubai. “It was just Teslas, Teslas, Teslas,” said Mr. Jankowsky, who is also the president of a company that makes cast iron parts for Volkswagen suppliers and other manufacturers.

Volkswagen’s executives say they expect sales to pick up this year as it begins selling new models, including a station wagon and a van, targeting market segments that Tesla does not play in.

“We are aware of our current challenges and are tackling them rigorously,” Oliver Blume, the Volkswagen chief executive, said last month in a statement.

In the short term, at least, the pain to the local economy caused by the Zwickau factory’s conversion was surprisingly mild, local officials, business leaders and worker representatives say.

Increased demand for workers to manufacture electronic components largely compensated for job losses from production lines that made parts for combustion cars, according to a study by AMZ Saxony, a suppliers’ group.

“All in all,” said Dirk Vogel, chief executive of AMZ, “not that much happened.”

Volkswagen, local businesses and officials coordinated an effort to prepare workers and businesses, blunting the impact.

The carmaker expanded its training institute in Zwickau to teach employees about electric vehicle technology. To generate enthusiasm, Volkswagen allowed workers to borrow battery-powered cars for a few days. The West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau, a state college that already had a strong focus on the auto industry, expanded courses related to electric vehicle technology.

Suppliers developed new components for electric vehicles to replace products in danger of becoming obsolete. Eberspächer, a German supplier that has a factory 60 miles east of Zwickau, near Dresden, began offering temperature-control systems for electric vehicles in addition to emission systems for conventional cars.

A few suppliers have suffered. GKN Driveline, which makes drive shafts not needed in most electric cars, is closing a factory in Zwickau and shifting production to Hungary. But GKN did not supply Volkswagen, and the closure appears to be a reaction to broader trends in the industry and German labor costs. GKN did not reply to requests for comment.

New technology has also created jobs, including 175 at FDTech, based in the nearby city, Chemnitz. The firm, partly owned by Volkswagen, is one of five companies in the area developing autonomous driving technology.

Zwickau benefits from some unique good fortune. Many local suppliers make seats, dashboards, painting equipment or other products that electric vehicles need just as much as gasoline cars.

Because of a shortage of electricians, engineers and other skilled workers, the unemployment rate in the state of Saxony, which includes Zwickau, has increased only modestly. It was 6.6 percent in March amid an overall economic slowdown, up from 6.3 percent a year earlier.

“There will be suppliers that disappear,” said Karsten Schulze, the managing director of FDTech. “But the skilled workers will be immediately sought after elsewhere.”

Volkswagen workers had some control because German law requires them to be consulted on changes that affect working conditions. The IG Metall union extracted a promise from the company not to lay off any full-time employees in Zwickau until 2030 at the earliest. The guarantee does not apply to temporary workers, however, and the company let 270 of them go after their contracts expired.

In the United States, unions are relatively strong in the Midwest and East, but most automobile factories in the South are not unionized. The United Automobile Workers is trying to change that. But even if the union is successful, U.S. companies will have no obligation to consult workers about changes that will affect their jobs, or to retrain them for new jobs. And there is no guarantee that new jobs making batteries, for example, will pay as well as jobs in factories where cars are assembled.

Residents note with pride that Zwickau has survived many upheavals. After Germany’s defeat in World War II, Soviet occupiers confiscated Audi’s manufacturing equipment. The carmaker moved to Bavaria and was later acquired by Volkswagen.

The Communist government that ruled East Germany converted the Zwickau factory to produce no-frills Trabant vehicles. The cars spewed blue exhaust and had a body made of plastic because of steel shortages. They could not compete with Western cars after the reunification of Germany in 1991. Thousands of Trabant workers lost their jobs. By the end of the 1990s, unemployment in the region exceeded 20 percent.

Volkswagen acquired the Zwickau factory after reunification and gradually expanded it into one of the company’s biggest production sites. The conversion to electric cars was momentous enough that Angela Merkel, the German chancellor at the time, attended a dedication ceremony in 2019, when the first battery-powered model rolled off the assembly line.

Not everyone in Zwickau is a fan of electric cars. The far-right Alternative for Deutschland party, which has 11 of 48 seats in the Zwickau City Council, has complained that Germans are being forced to buy electric vehicles, echoing comments from former President Donald J. Trump and other Republicans.

The national government, led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, a Social Democrat, angered many in Zwickau when it abruptly slashed subsidies for electric vehicles last year to deal with a budget crisis. Sales of electric vehicles in Germany slumped 14 percent during the first three months of the year, though they still accounted for 12 percent of new cars.

Still, few people in Zwickau are pushing for Volkswagen to go back to building gasoline cars.

“With a transition to a new technology, the question is always: Are you the first or the last?” said Constance Arndt, the lord mayor of Zwickau. “I think it’s always better to be first.”

Tesla Cars To Soon Sell In India? The Competition And Elon Musk's Advantage

Speculation is rife about Tesla's plans for India (Representational)

Elon Musk is expected to visit India to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week and announce an investment of $2 billion - $3 billion in setting up a Tesla manufacturing unit in the country.

Over the past few years, Tesla has expressed interest in entering the Indian market, hindered mainly by steep import duties. However, with the recent announcement of reduced import tariffs for Electric Vehicles (EVs) priced above $35,000, provided the manufacturer gives a guarantee of investment of Rs 4,150 crore and sets up the manufacturing plant within three years with 25% localisation and subsequently achieves 50% localisation within five years, it is now presumed that Tesla will finally make its much-awaited India entry.

Speculation is rife about Tesla's plans for India. For starters, the $35,000 mark means Tesla can start importing all of its vehicles - its cheapest product in the US market is the Model 3, with a starting price of over $40,000. Tesla currently has a portfolio of four products.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

We can expect these to come to Indian shores soon to compete in the premium and luxury EV space. Tesla products are expected to have a price advantage over existing luxury and premium EV players. In the luxury space, players like Mercedes and BMW have already made some investments and it is yet to be seen if they are eligible to avail the import duty benefits in the new scheme.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The Mercedes EV range in India starts at around Rs 80 lakh, while BMW's cheapest EV iX1 costs around Rs 67 lakh. Pricewise, Tesla vehicles can even compete with products like the Hyundai IONIQ 5, priced at around Rs 46 lakh, and EV 6, which sells for about Rs 61 lakh.

Tesla is expected to import products to India from Germany - the manufacturing of the right-hand drive version of Model Y has already begun at the Berlin Gigafactory.

The real story would be Tesla's entry into the mass market segment. It has announced Project Redwood, a small mass-market EV proposed to be launched in 2025, and expected to be priced at $25,000 or around Rs 20 lakh. This will drive straight into the territory of domestic EV players like Tata, Mahindra, and even Maruti Suzuki, all of whom have plans to launch EVs at various price points, including the Rs 20-25 lakh segment.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

In FY24, the EV market share continued to be in the low single digits (at 2%) but saw a rapid growth of 91% over FY23.

India is aiming to achieve 30% EV sales by 2030.

The EV segment in the country is led by Tata Motors with an over 70% market share. One of Tata's most popular products is the Nexon EV, priced between Rs 14.5 lakh and Rs 19.9 lakh. Maruti's hugely anticipated entry into the EV segment - the EVX - is also expected to be priced at around Rs 20 lakh - Rs 22 lakh.

On the other hand, it will augur well for Tesla to get access to the Indian market which can be not just a market for its low-cost compact hatch Redwood, but also a manufacturing hub for markets like ASEAN and Lat Am regions. India exported over 6 lakh cars in FY24.

Though there have been media reports of Tesla shunning the small EV project, the company has not confirmed these reports. Elon Musk took to X, formerly Twitter, to rebut the media outlet that reported it.

Tesla Plants

Tesla has plants in the US, Germany, and China. India will be the fourth country to have a Tesla manufacturing facility.

Factories In US

Fremont, CA Factory, US Gigafactory Nevada, US Gigafactory New York, US Gigafactory Texas, US

Facilities Outside US

Gigafactory Shanghai, China Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, Germany

Elon Musk is coming to India when big global markets like the US have seen a slowdown in EV sales, forcing Tesla to downsize by 10%.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Tesla is also facing stiff competition from Chinese manufacturers, which with their low-cost manufacturing, offer EVs at much economical price points.

In 2023, BYD, the Chinese EV and HEV manufacturer, sold over 60% more units than Tesla.

The India entry will not only give Tesla access to the third-largest automobile market but also help it diversify its location and give it a manufacturing cost advantage.
