TAUCK RIVER CRUISES 10 Days | Holland and Belgium in the Spring Southbound

AMSTERDAM TO BRUSSELS Day 1 | Amsterdam, Holland. Embark. This most memorable of Belgium and Holland cruises begins at 4:00 PM in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Upon arrival, a transfer is included from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport or Central Train Station to the riverboat. After settling into your cabin, attend a discovery briefing followed by dinner this evening aboard the riverboat. (D) Day 2 | Amsterdam. Wake up aboard your riverboat in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam, a vibrant blend of the historic and the contemporary, from its medieval core to the bustling shops, cafés and rich cosmopolitan life of a 21st-century European metropolis. Enjoy coffee and cake during a private canal cruise through Amsterdam’s network of centuries-old waterways dating back to the Renaissance era, then admire masterpieces by Rembrandt (including The Night Watch) and works by more of the Old Dutch Masters, along with a wealth of silver, Delftware and other treasures at the world-renowned Rijksmuseum. After lunch on the riverboat, depart the city this afternoon for a journey to Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse, where millions of blooming tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, lillies, crocuses and bluebells create colorful carpets of flowers every spring. Your riverboat sets out for Hoorn this evening; attend the Captain's welcome reception and dinner tonight. (B,L,D) Day 3 | Hoorn or cheese and windmills in Alkmaar. Enkhuizen. Start your day in the 650-year-old port city of Hoorn in the Netherlands’ farming region – birthplace of explorer Willem Schouten, who named South America’s southern tip Cape Horn in honor of his hometown. Choose from a guided walking tour of Hoorn and its many intact 16th- and 17th-century house facades, or a journey to Alkmaar in the Schermer polder. In Alkmaar, visit the Schermer Museum Molen – a historic windmill dating from 1634 – for a look at how windmills created the polder, and the family-owned Zeilzicht cheese farm for a tasty cheese-making demonstration and tour. Continue your most memorable of Holland cruises to lovely Enkhuizen for a walking tour and a visit to the open-air Zuiderzee Museum, recreating life in a Zuiderzee (south sea) fishing village between the 1880s and the 1930s. Set off for Arnhem this evening. (B,L,D) Day 4 | Arnhem. Disembark this morning for a choice of sightseeing in Arnhem. You can explore De Hoge Veluwe National Park – the country’s largest nature reserve and home to scenic forests, drifting sand dunes and grassy plains – then have a chance to peruse works by Vincent van Gogh (there are over 275 of them) and others at the Kröller-Müller Museum (subject to weekly closures) set right within the park. Or take a walking tour of battle sites associated with the World War II airborne assault on Arnhem, including the "John Frost Bridge," and visit the Airborne Museum, located in a former Allied divisional headquarters in Oosterbeek. Rejoin your riverboat this afternoon. Back aboard ship, enjoy a performance of classical music this evening; this most delightful of Holland cruises continues overnight to Rotterdam. (B,L,D) Day 5 | Rotterdam. Cuising in Zeeland. Veere. Your riverboat arrives this morning in Rotterdam, the Netherlands' second-largest city and one of the biggest and busiest ports in the world. Rising from the ashes after most of its historic center was destroyed by Luftwaffe bombing in WWII, Rotterdam was gradually rebuilt into what is now a thriving 21st-century commercial center and transportation hub known for its innovative architecture and rich cultural life, often referred to as the "Gateway to Europe." Get to know the city with visits to some of its renowned museums or to the famed Delta Works – a remarkable series of dams, dikes, levees and other barriers designed to protect the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta from North Sea storm surges like one that devastated the area in the 1950s. You might also join us for an optional excursion to the historic city of Delft, with its canals and medieval center, before returning to the riverboat for a cruise among the islands of the province of Zeeland, arriving tonight in Veere. (B,L,D) Day 6 | Veere. Middelburg. Wake up today in the small Dutch city of Veere, on what had once been the island of Walcheren in Zeeland. After its founding as a 13th-century ferry site ("Veere" translates to "ferry"), the city was a key trading port, serving as the "staple port" for goods from Scotland from the 16th to 18th centuries. Tour Veere and the surrounding countryside, dotted with idyllic windmills. Returning to the riverboat for lunch, set off this afternoon to Middelburg; with roots dating back to the 8th century, the city became one of the most important trading centers for the Dutch East India Company during the country's 17th-century "Golden Age." Although about a third of the city's original Old Town was destroyed during WWII, much of it has been rebuilt and restored, and many historic buildings remain for you to discover on your city tour – including a visit to the Middelburg Abbey complex, whose main structure dates to 1125 and is surrounded by church buildings added over the centuries; its tower is known to locals as Lange Jan ("Long John"). Spend time exploring on your own before continuing your cruise to Antwerp tonight. (B,L,D) Day 7 | Antwerp, Belgium. Arise aboard ship in Antwerp for a taste of daily life in this key Belgian port city and the capital of Flanders, yours to discover in various ways today. Take an orientation tour and walk through Antwerp's historic center, including Grote Markt (the old market square), the Cathedral of Our Lady, and numerous restored merchants' houses. Taste fine Belgian chocolate on a delicious visit to a local chocolatier and sample locally produced “bier” at a specialty beer pub known for its beer expertise. Your day also includes a visit to the newly opened Red Star Line Museum (closed Mondays), whose interactive exhibits in the historic warehouses of the Red Star Line shipping company tell the story of immigrants from all over Europe who began their journey to a new life here. After lunch, travel early this evening to the city of Ieper (Ypres) in Flanders for a Tauck Exclusive in observation of the 2014 centennial of the start of World War I: dinner and a private visit to the In Flanders Fields Museum, set within the reconstructed Cloth Hall, commemorating the battles fought here between 1914 and 1918. Return to the ship in Antwerp to continue this most remarkable of Belgium and Holland cruises. (B,L,D) Day 8 | Margraten.  Maastricht.  Drive to Margraten to pay your respects at the Netherlands American Cemetery, final resting place of thousands of U.S. soldiers who fell in battle here during World War II. As a Tauck Exclusive, lunch today is a memorable culinary experience at Château Neercanne, a castle whose terraced gardens are protected by UNESCO; you'll don a chef's hat, visit the kitchen where your meal is being prepared, and dig into an extraordinary lunch served in a Roman grotto within the castle. This afternoon, catch up with the riverboat in Maastricht, another of the Netherlands' oldest cities, boasting more than 1,000 historic buildings and monuments. Join our local guide for a visit to the intriguing Museum aan het Vrijthof (closed Mondays), housed in the 16th-century Spanish Government House, then spend some free time exploring on your own. Maastricht's Old Town includes sites such as Helpoort, a steep-roofed entry through the medieval town wall built in 1229, and the central Vrijthof Square. Enjoy Belgian specialties at dinner aboard the riverboat, docked in Maastricht for the evening. (B,L,D) Day 9 | Maastricht. Disembark. Brussels. Disembark your riverboat this morning in Maastricht, then drive to Brussels for a full day's sightseeing in Belgium's capital city, a key center of European trade and culture since the 13th century. Discoveries include the Atomium, a 338-foot-tall structure representing atoms in an iron crystal, built for the 1958 World's Fair, and the adjacent Mini-Europe park featuring miniatures of renowned European buildings. A walking tour of the city's historic center takes in the Grande-Place, one of Europe's most beautiful city squares and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its Gothic town hall surrounded by Renaissance-era guildhalls; and the venerable 17th-century bronze fountain sculpture and symbol of the city, the famous Manneken Pis, whose wardrobe traditionally changes several times a week. The afternoon is yours to explore as you please. Overnight at the stylishly elegant Hotel Amigo in the heart of the city; savor a taste of regional cuisine at tonight's farewell dinner, a fitting finale to one of Tauck's most popular Belgium and Holland cruises. (B,L,D) Day 10 | Brussels. Your most memorable of Belgium and Holland cruises ends in Brussels, Belgium. Fly home anytime. A transfer is included from the Hotel Amigo to Brussels Airport, Centraal Station or Brussels Midi Station. Allow 3 hours for flight check-in. (B) NOTE: Itinerary is subject to change without notice. Set out from the Dutch capital to discover the diversity of the provinces of the Netherlands. You also won't have far to go to Belgium on a cruise from Amsterdam. Immerse yourself in the history of the Middle Ages in Ghent, discover ancient and modern art in the museums of Antwerp and enjoy Belgium's excellent cuisine and countless types of beer during a visit to Brussels. City Highlights

Amsterdam is one of those cities that every traveler should have visited at least once in his life. No wonder, every year millions upon millions of tourists flock to the city on the canals to enjoy the flood of sights and cultural offerings. The best way to discover Amsterdam is by taking a boat ride along the canals or a walk along the unique canals. Art lovers will be immediately drawn to one of the world-famous museums, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum or the Van Gogh Museum. Party people will find their happiness in the nightlife and red light district De Wallen. And beer drinkers should by no means miss the Heineken Experience.

The oldest city in the Netherlands exudes original Dutch flair with gabled little houses, small cheese shops and delicacies on the "Grote Markt". In the narrow streets, yesterday and today go hand in hand. Therefore, a visit to the Gothic St. Stevenskerk, including the burial cellar, as well as a stroll along the shopping street "Lange Hezelstraat" should be on the sightseeing plan. With freshly fried Kibbelingen in the wintry Kronenburgerpark can be perfectly paused afterwards.

You should definitely use the stopover in Utrecht to take a look at this beautiful Dutch city at your leisure. Whether you visit the famous Centraal Museum for ancient and modern art or prefer to discover the provincial capital on a leisurely canal cruise from the water - the historic architecture and the many lovingly restored houses will inspire you. In the center of the city, the landmark of Utrecht, the 112 m high Utrecht Cathedral, watches over the city. It was built between 1321 and 1382 and is considered the oldest and highest church tower in the Netherlands. If you climb the 465 steps, you will be rewarded with a fantastic view. If you like it more contemplative, just take a nice stroll through the alleys and typical Nierderland courtyards that Utrecht is known for. Or how about a visit to the colorful flower market? Utrecht is always worth a visit.

The Dutch city of Dordrecht is a former trading city thanks to its location on the water. This past can still be felt in the town today. Be it in the historic city center, at the harbor or even in one of the several museums. Also worth seeing is the "Grote Kerk" and the Augustinian monastery of the 13th century. A walk through Dordrecht is the best way to discover the history of the place.

The port city of Rotterdam is located in the Netherlands and is one of the most interesting places in the world. The modern architecture is significantly involved in this. Among the impressive sights is the horseshoe-shaped market hall with the huge range of goods and the colorful hustle and bustle. In the old harbor with the striking white house, historic ships can be marveled at. For strolling, shopping and partying, the shopping mile Witte de Withstraat is an attraction. The futuristic-looking main station, the bag, also invites to the pub crawl and shopping.

Emmerich is located on the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia and has a beautiful Rhine bridge, but also the Eltenberg, as a local mountain. Still in addition, there is a Rhine promenade for walking and strolling. If you want to know more about the art of coffee, you can visit the Museum of Coffee Technology, which is famous for the city of Emmrich. Nearby is the city of Kleve, which is also very worth seeing with its Swan Castle, the zoo and the historic gardens.

Maastricht is a university city in the extreme south of the Netherlands. The city is characterized by its medieval architecture and lively cultural scene. The cobblestone old town is home to the Gothic Church of St. John (Sint Janskerk) and the Romanesque Basilica of St. Servatius, with its important collection of sacred art. On the banks of the Maas River, which flows through the city center, stands the futuristic Bonnefanten Museum of Fine Art.

Roermond is a city and municipality with 58,806 inhabitants in the Dutch province of Limburg, which lies on the border with Germany and near Belgium. Roermond is best known for the Designer Outlet Center, where there are a lot of special discounts on exclusive brands and selected clothing. Directly connected to the outlet center is the city center of Roermond. Here you can walk relaxed between small boutiques and quaint cafes.

Next to Roermond is the city of Venlo, which has 101,984 citizens, almost twice as many inhabitants as the neighboring city. Small stores within the center are perfect for a shopping trip. If you are looking for art and culture, you should visit the Limburg Museum, which tells a lot about the people of Limburg and the culture. Another point of reference is the Oude Markt in downtown Venlo, where you can find many restaurants that can be recommended especially if you long for a delicious wine in the sunny Netherlands.

Located in the province of Noord-Holland, Alkmaar in the Netherlands is also known as the cheese city of Holland. You should therefore plan a visit to the traditional cheese market as well as a visit to the cheese museum. Alkmaar also has a historic city center with many shops, cafes and restaurants. You can easily explore Alkmaar on foot. Even more beautiful, however, is a round trip along one of the canals, because similar to Amsterdam, Alkmaar is also known as a canal city. In one of the typical Giethoornse Punter you will sail under the numerous bridges and have enough opportunity to discover the many monuments of the city. Back on solid ground, we still recommend a visit to the Beatles Museum in Alkmaar. In addition to the Cheese Museum, which gives a closer look at cheese production, the Beatles Museum is another much-visited attraction in Alkmaar. Should you then still have a little time, you can start for a bike ride to the nearby beach.

Description and info of river cruises in the Netherlands

On this river cruise through the Netherlands you will get to know three of the most beautiful and important cities in the country. From Düsseldorf you will first visit beautiful Amsterdam, the largest and also most unique city in the country. During a boat trip over the world-famous canals of Amsterdam, you will not be able to get out of the amazement. Enjoy the countless small canals with their picturesque bridges and magnificent town houses along the banks. With its world-famous art museums, such as the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam is also always worth a visit for art fans. The second stop on the trip is Rotterdam, which as the second largest city in the Netherlands is a modern contrast to historic Amsterdam. The highlight of a visit to Rotterdam is undoubtedly a harbor cruise, during which you will get to know the largest and busiest port in Europe. Third and final shore visit of your cruise through Holland is Arnhem. Although not as well known to tourists as Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the capital of the province of Gelderland is still worth a visit. Fashionistas will have their true joy at the numerous boutiques in the Modekwartier. And animal lovers will spend a great day in the country's most famous zoo, Burgers' Zoo.

This river cruise through Holland and Belgium takes you to three of the largest metropolises in the two Benelux countries. From Düsseldorf, you will first head downriver to Amsterdam. The charm of the largest city in the Netherlands is its unique canal belt, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical significance. Discover the city's many narrow and crooked historic buildings on the waterfront during a walk, bike ride or boat tour. From Amsterdam, continue your journey to Antwerp. The vibrant metropolis of Flanders combines history and modernity in a more harmonious way than almost any other city in Europe. Here, centuries-old buildings such as the Church of Our Lady, the Steen Castle and the magnificent houses on the Grote Markt combine with many examples of modern architecture, such as the Museum aan het Stroom. Here, old Flemish masters meet a very lively contemporary art scene in the city's art museums. And don't forget to sample one of Flanders' hundreds of beers while in Antwerp. The final stop on your river cruise through Holland and Belgium is modern Rotterdam. At the mouth of the Rhine into the North Sea, you will experience not only Europe's largest port, but also hypermodern architecture and a very interesting gastronomic offer.

On this river cruise through the Netherlands, you'll immerse yourself in some of the country's oldest and most beautiful cities. First stop of the cruise is Nijmegen, the oldest city in the country. Main sights of Nijmegen are the Stevenskerk and the market square with the Boterwaag, the Sint-Stevenspoortje and numerous beautiful town houses. From Nijmegen, you will cross the Maas River to Maastricht, the southernmost city in the Netherlands. Maastricht is not only known for its beautifully preserved city center with the Romanesque St. Servatius Basilica and the Gothic St. Janskerk, but is also popular for its southern flair. Downstream on the Maas River, the tour continues via Roermond, with its many small boutiques and quaint cafés, to Venlo, where you should have seen the Old Town Hall and the Limburg Museum. Children will love to spend their day in Venlo at the amusement park Toverland or the play park Klein Zwitserland. Via the old fortified town of Gorinchem, you will continue your river cruise to Dordrecht - one of the oldest cities in Holland - which exudes the typical charm of the country with its numerous waterways. Don't miss a visit to the Grote Kerk, the highly praised collection of paintings in the Dordrechts Museum and the Augustinian monastery Het Hof. Your journey on the Rhine and Meuse concludes in Arnhem, which is best known as a museum city. Here you will be spoilt for choice between the wine museum, the water museum and the open-air museum.

This river cruise through Holland and Belgium is a voyage of discovery to some of the most beautiful cities in the two Benelux countries. Starting in Düsseldorf, you will depart for Amsterdam, where you can enjoy the world's unique charm of Holland's largest city along the canal belt. The mixture of dozens of small canals, hundreds of bridges and countless crooked houses makes Amsterdam such a special city. But also the art and shopping scene of Amsterdam are among the best in Europe. Afterwards you will get to know Hoorn, a typical Dutch coastal town on the shores of the Ijsselmeer. In this charming harbor town, you will breathe in the flair of Holland's Golden Age and experience maritime history at every turn. Set sail from Hoorn on a sailboat or take a trip on a small steam train. From Hoorn, travel on to Rotterdam, Holland's largest port city, where you can also experience the largest port in Europe. A boat trip along the miles of wharves is a very special event. Next shore leave is Ghent. In the Flanders university town, you will hardly be able to decide what to do first: a tour of the massive Count's Castle, the majestic St. Bavo's Cathedral or the picturesque Belfry. Or perhaps you would prefer a stroll along the waterfront, along the Grass and the Korenlei. The medieval city center of Ghent is without a doubt one of the most beautiful old towns in Europe. You will also experience numerous medieval sights during your next stop in Antwerp. However, Antwerp is also a vibrant modern city with an extremely lively fashion and art scene. The conclusion of your river cruise through Holland and Belgium is Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands.

On this cruise through Holland you will get to know many of the most beautiful provinces of the Netherlands. The first stop on your river cruise is Cuijk on the Meuse River, where you can experience history at the Foundation Museum Ceuclum, the Sint Agatha Monastery and the St. Martinuskerk. Via Roermond, you will sail up the Meuse River to Maastricht. The capital of the province of Limburg delights with a great mix of historical sights, cultural highlights, cozy restaurants and hip cafes. From Maastricht you drive to Antwerp, the heart of Flanders. Here you can not only shop for fashion, art and diamonds, but also enjoy magnificent historic and modern architecture. In Dordrecht in South Holland, you will immerse yourself in the exciting past of a former trading city. The historic city center, the harbor and the museums of Dordrecht bear witness to the great history of the city. Via Rotterdam, where you will be amazed by the largest port in Europe, you will travel on to historic Gouda, whose scales, town hall and St. John's Church are among the most beautiful buildings in the Netherlands. In Gouda, of course, you can't miss learning all about the world-famous cheese at the Gouda Cheese Experience. The conclusion of your cruise through the provinces of the Netherlands is at the same time one of the highlights: Amsterdam. Enjoy the unique flair of the Amsterdam canals at the end of your cruise through Holland with a glass of Heineken or a coffee in one of the cozy cafes on the banks of the canals.

A river cruise through Holland and Belgium is hard to beat for variety. In almost every city of the two Benelux countries there are beautiful historical sights to visit. However, many of the metropolises of the Netherlands, such as Rotterdam and Antwerp, are also known for their modern architecture. Art lovers will discover numerous old and new masterpieces in the museums of Amsterdam, Antwerp, Ghent and Maastricht. Sporty people can enjoy sailing or kayaking on the many waters of Holland and Belgium. That both countries are a paradise for cyclists is widely known anyway. And whether with a Belgian beer in Antwerp, a bag of fries in Brussels or a coffee in Amsterdam - the bars, cafes and restaurants in Belgium and the Netherlands are way out in front in Europe when it comes to coziness.

The starting point of a river cruise to the Netherlands is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Düsseldorf. Due to its excellent connection to the highway network, its large airport and its important train station, Düsseldorf is easily accessible from anywhere in Germany. The VIVA Cruises team will be happy to assist all guests in planning their journey to Düsseldorf.

Rhine River Cruises

River cruises in Northern Europe are centred on Germany and Holland, and include River Rhine cruises, River Moselle cruises, and cruises on the rivers and canals of Holland and Belgium in Spring tulip time.

The River Rhine is one of the main rivers of Europe, flowing from Switzerland to the North Sea at Amsterdam. The navigable section starts from Basel in Switzerland, continuing to Strasbourg in France's Alsace region before reaching the wine village of Rudesheim . The Middle Rhine is the most scenic section as the river cruise passes through the Rhine Gorge dotted with castles high above the river, and the famous Lorelei rock. Cologne with its huge twin spire cathedral and old town is a Rhine river cruise highlight.

The River Moselle leaves the Rhine at Koblenz , and twists past vineyard covered hillsides as far as Luxembourg . The river side port of Cochem , overlooked by magnificent Reichsburg Castle, the ancient wine village of Bernkastel , and Trier with its extensive Roman sites are Moselle river cruise highlights.

From Amsterdam take springtime Holland river cruises to the Ijsselmeer and historic ports of Volendam , Hoorn and Enkhuisen , with excursions to Keukenhof Gardens ablaze with tulips and spring flowers. Cruises may visit medieval Bruges or the diamond city of Antwerp in Belgium.

The cruise terminal in Amsterdam is a short distance from the city centre and its tall merchant houses and tree-lined canals. Chief sights are the prestigious Rijksmuseum and its large collection of important paintings, the Van Gogh Museum and Ann Frank's House. The attractive narrow streets are full of bars, coffee houses, quaint bridges and interesting shops.

Basel (Switzerland)

Basle is a handsome city with a buzzing Marketplatz and daily food markets. In its old town are winding streets, the cathedral, red-brick City Hall, art museums and many historic buildings. The green valleys and chocolate-box villages of Switzerland are sometimes included in tours from Basle.

Bernkastel (Germany)

Set beside the river in a landscape of steeply-sloping vineyards and rolling hills, Bernkastel is a lovely little town. Its red and white timber-frame houses surround the medieval square, and worth seeking out is the quaint Spitzhausen the pointed house. Bernkastel has a 500-year history of wine-making the famous Mosel riesling wines.

Cochem (Germany)

The waterfront at Cochem is lined with a flower-filled promenade, leading via twisting alleys to its medieval square. Known as the Pearl of the Moselle, the architectural gem of Cochem is surrounded by vineyards producing Reisling, which can be tasted in its cosy wine taverns. There is often the opportunity to visit the gorgeous hill-top castle of Reichsburg overlooking the town.

Cologne (Germany)

Cologne is the capital of the Rhineland and is dominated by the huge spires of its cathedral. The Old Town has welcoming taverns, cafés and plenty of opportunities to buy a bottle of the famous 4711 cologne. Stroll the narrow streets of Old Town and see quaint squares and perhaps visit the Germano-Roman Museum to see finds from Colognes Roman past.

Koblenz (Germany)

Koblenz sits prettily on the riverside where the Moselle and the Rhine meet. Tiny alleys, fountains and old squares lead to the 12th-century church of St Florin. In this rich wine-producing region, a visit to a wine tavern is a must, where you can sample 'Father Rhine' and 'Mother Moselle' at their best.

Mainz (Germany)

Leafy Mainz offers two fascinating highlights. Mainz was the birthplace of Johann Gutenberg, and the city's Printing Museum exhibits the first two copies made of his famous Bible. In St Stephans' church there are wonderful, vivid blue stained-glass windows created by the great 20th century artist, Marc Chagall.

Rudesheim (Germany)

The scenic town of Rudesheim has many attractions - it sits at the foot of the Niederwald mountain and in one of the Rhines best wine-making regions. Stroll the gorgeous Drosselgasse and sip a glass of superb Riesling in a cosy tavern or take a tour by gondola up the Niederwald,. Other options include Castle Vollards or a miniature train ride to the eccentric Mechanical Music Museum.

Strasbourg (France)

The Grand Ile is the historic centre of Strasbourg, the busy European capital which combines dazzling historic buildings with the offices of the European Parliament and modern commerce. Stroll the fairytale district of Petite France, see covered bridges and the magnificent cathedral.

Trier (Germany)

Explore Trier on foot and discover magnificent Roman remains in amongst fine restaurants, wine-growers taverns and colourful gabled buildings. The main sites are Porta Nigra city gate, the basilica, imperial baths and the ancient cathedral. This distinguished and picturesque city beside the Moselle River was the birthplace of Karl Marx.

Antwerp port is adjacent to the Steen and connected by metro to the city, which is an important centre of the diamond trade. Cobbled lanes criss-cross the city leading to art galleries, antique and chocolate shops, and the magnificent cathedral of Notre Dame, which holds paintings by Rubens, the tall Flemish buildings of the Grote Markt and the City Hall. Antwerp is also a fashion capital, and the forthcoming Port Authority HQ was designed by groundbreaking architect, Zaha Hadid.

Bruges (Belgium)

Bruges is one of the oldest towns in Flanders, and one of the prettiest. Tranquil canals wind through the city, and the Church of Our Lady houses the sculpture by Michelangelo of the Madonna and Child. In the busy square overlooked by the Town Hall belfry perhaps try local 'moules et frites', buy fine chocolate, take coffee or sample one of the many Belgian beers.

Enkhuizen (Holland)

The Drommedaris Tower in Enkhuizen is a reminder of the towns role as a trading centre for the Dutch East India Company, and the Zuiderzee Museum traces its history. The traditional wooden boats of the brown fleet pass through Enkhuizens busy lock and can be seen sailing on the Ijselmeer.

Ghent (Belgium)

Charming Ghent escaped World War II bombing, and has over 900 listed buildings commissioned by wealthy merchants in medieval times. Along the canals, there are many small shops selling unusual items, and the Design Museum shows Art Nouveau items and Philippe Starck designs.

Hoorn (Holland)

The delightful small town of Hoorn has lovely gabled buildings, constructed during its time as a trading port for the Dutch East India Company. It is well-known for its quaint shops, selling curiosities, antiques and art, and for its famous son who rounded the Southern Cape in 1618 and named it Cape Horn after his birthplace.

The quaint lakeside town of Volendam is a maze of fishermen's houses, small gabled buildings and wooden shops, and was a popular subject for 19th-century artists. Some of its inhabitants still wear traditional Dutch dress, and there is a museum dedicated to Dutch costume and its history. Volendam is close to the historic cheese-producing town of Edam.

Dutch Delight

Dive into Dutch history, culture, and cuisine on a river cruise through the Netherlands.

Windmills, colorful flowers, a rich art history, and more bikes than you can possibly imagine—the Netherlands is like nowhere else on earth. See the full spectrum of Dutch life, landscapes, and customs on visits to bustling cities and small rural villages.

With an entire third of the country below sea level, it takes a complicated system of inland waterways and flood barriers to keep the Netherlands afloat. It’s no wonder, then, that Dutch culture is so deeply tied to the water. Experience the many ways this plays out as you sail your own boat in a lakeside resort town, visit charming port towns, taste pickled herring and, of course, stroll through endless canal-lined streets.

This cruise is perfect for history buffs, sustainability-minded nature lovers, sailing enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a relaxing trip through a charmingly unique country.

Generations Family Program (select sailings) : Share the enchantment of this region with the younger people traveling with you. These cruise/tours not only feature unique, fun-filled adventures for families to enjoy together, they are also packed with culturally and historically significant experiences designed to spark creativity and curiosity.

This idyllic village is full of thatched roofs, lush greenery, and lawns overflowing with colorful blooms. What it has virtually none of, on the other hand, is roads. Instead, locals live across a multitude of small islands connected by wooden bridges and get around by boat. This morning, you’ll have the chance to sail with your fellow guests through Giethoorn’s canals to get the best view of this pretty town.

To see Giethoorn is to watch a storybook town come to life. The village, whose name literally translates to “Goat Horn” is almost entirely made up of a collection of tiny islands, each with their own houses. Connected by bridges and lacking roads, the only way to get around is by walking or—as is much more fun—by boat ride. Board a little boat just for your fellow young travelers and their families, then start floating your way around the canals of Giethoorn.

The only seaport left in Friesland, Harlingen is a bustling fishing center and the launch point for ferries to local islands. A quaint town, its canals are filled with sailboats and lined by traditional Dutch houses and historic buildings. Harlingen’s beaches are an excellent place to relax and breathe in the salted air of the Wadden Sea.

Harlingen is an attractive port town on the Wadden Sea—local legend has it that the only reason Harlingen isn’t under the Wadden Sea is because of the actions of a young boy, who plugged up the local dike with one finger and thereby saved the city from sinking. It is, of course, just a fun story, but a statue in his honor can be found near the docks nonetheless.

Today you’ll stroll through Harlingen’s canals and quaint alleyways with a local guide. Many of the buildings here have been around for three or four centuries, giving the town a historic feel. Keep an eye out for the gable stones on older buildings, small plaques with unique carvings used to help people find their way before numerical addresses were popularized.

You will have the opportunity to dive deep into the Frisian area with one of two different experiences:

1. Head to a horse farm where the characteristically large and agile black Friesian horse is raised. After learning about the farm’s work and Frisian culture, you’ll be treated to a horse show.

2. Take a short drive to the city of Franeker, where you’ll find the oldest working planetarium in the world hanging from the ceiling of a beautiful canal house. This accurately moving model of the solar system was built between 1774 and 1781 by the Frisian wool comber, Eise Eisinga, and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will also visit a historic mill, still active today as a grain mill.

You’ll enter a little house once inhabited by the Eisinga family, and stop in a tiny blue room to learn about Eise Eisinga’s pet project: the world’s oldest planetarium, now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Look up at the ceiling to see miniature scale models of the six planets of our solar system that had been discovered by the time it was built in the late 18th century, rotating on a perfectly timed track.

Nijmegen

Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands, having begun as an old Roman military camp over 2,000 years ago. Very close to the German border, its situation between the Meuse and Waal rivers renders its countryside particularly lush. In town, you’ll find hints of its Roman roots and Medieval castles. Notwithstanding its long history, Nijmegen is known for its upbeat and trendy atmosphere.

Visit of palace het loo.

Immerse yourself in the history of the Dutch Royal family today as you visit the palace known as “Het Loo.” Built at the behest of William of Orange in the 17th century, it was a summer residence for his family. Now, in the 21st century, the palace serves as a museum, so travelers and locals can marvel at the stunning decorations and gardens that were once reserved for Dutch royalty. The heritage of this building and the House of Orange-Nassau are excellently preserved, all of which you can learn about at your leisure as you admire the beautiful property.

*Masterpiece Collection are optional experiences that go above and beyond our daily selection of included excursions and can be booked for an additional fee. Select Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences can be pre-booked. Please note that requests to pre-book must be made by calling our Reservations Team no later than 6 days prior to departure and are subject to availability. Some venues are limited in the number of guests they can accommodate. Guests can book onboard (space permitting) and pay in Euros. Pre-booked Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences are refundable up to 5 days prior to the cruise/tour start date; if inside of 5 days they are non-refundable. Select Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences require a minimum number of participants and are subject to cancellation (with full refund) if minimum is not met. Masterpiece Collection excursions may not operate if they occur on a holiday or if they require a minimum number of participants and that minimum is not met.

Named for William of Orange, who added the heptagonal town fortifications you’ll still find standing today, this city in the North Brabant province is a picture-perfect piece of history.

Though Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, The Hague is the seat of the country’s government and a fantastic place to visit in its own right. A favorite local highlight of ours, and your destination on this tour, is the Mauritshuis. This museum houses a significant collection of Dutch Golden Age masterpieces—an array of stunning still lifes and portraits, including Vermeer’s famous Girl with a Pearl Earring . Besides its remarkable collection, what makes this museum so special is its setting. The Mauritshuis itself was once a city palace, allowing the works of art inside to be presented in the manner they were originally intended, hanging on the walls of stately houses.

There's an old saying: “God created the world, but the Dutch created their own land.” Today, as you head off to Zaanse Schans, a wonderful living-history village, you'll get a close-up look at the land the Dutch created. Zaanse Schans stands on the banks of the Zaan River, amid the Kalverpolder—land reclaimed from the sea 500 years ago and put to work supplying the needs of booming Amsterdam in the 17th century. Though the water was pumped away from the land via windmills, the windmills you see in Zaanse Schans were early industrial mills, dedicated to grinding spices, oil, flour—whatever the city growing nearby needed. Some 600 windmills operated here, forming the country’s earliest industrial zone; today six working mills stand atop the dike on the banks of the Zaan.

While the adults are off learning about cheesemaking at the same farm, you’ll be treated to a special tour that will take you to pet the animals—cows, horses, chickens, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, pigeons, sheep, calves, and more!—sip on lemonade while decorating cakes, and maybe even have some time for trampoline jumping, go-karts, or pedal boating.

Anne Frank House Visit

The story of Anne Frank is well known. She was born in Frankfurt 1929 to parents Otto and Edith Frank, who fled Germany with their family a few years later in the hopes of finding safety in the Netherlands. When Amsterdam failed to provide protection from the Nazis, the Franks planned to emigrate once again. This plan ultimately failed, and the Franks went into hiding in a secret household annex. It was in this annex that Anne Frank hid with her family for more than two years during World War II and wrote her diary. Seeing the annex for oneself is another story entirely. The Secret Annex had become a museum, giving context to Anne’s plight and that of many families like hers in WWII. Today, you’ll follow a local guide via public transportation to arrive at the museum and get a firsthand look at this poignant piece of history.
