athleta travel dresses

The best lightweight, easy-care women’s travel dresses

athleta travel dresses

As an over 60 woman, I plan my travel wardrobe around classic, easy-care items. I take inspiration from the French style of dressing, focusing on solid colors and a classic look in high quality pieces. I accent these with colorful scarves, jackets, and jewelry. A dress fits perfectly into this capsule. Designing your travel style around a simple dress is a great way to pack light and look great! I’ve tested some of the best women’s travel dresses and present my favorites here.

Table of Contents

Why pack a dress for travel?

I’m not your typical dress person. At home you’re more likely to find me in a great pair of jeans or workout wear. But when I’m planning a trip, I want to be ready for anything – museum visits, evenings out, and lots of walking. For me, one of the best options is a travel dress! On cruises, a dress is always on the list. (We don’t book anything that requires formal wear. It’s just not our thing.) On an active adventure where you’re in hiking or cycling clothes by day, it’s nice to have an option for something soft and pretty at night. And in a stretch, a dress can be worn as nightwear! That’s where dresses for travel come in!

Unless noted, we were not supplied with the dresses we reviewed here, but were so impressed with the Wool& dress and bike shorts, that we have chosen to partner with Wool& going forward. DISCLOSURE

As a woman over 60, I began traveling IN the sixties. My Dad wore three piece suits, and my mom and I wore dresses. Does that make me a travel dress expert?? No, but it does give me an appreciation for the functionality of dresses.

What makes a great travel dress?

Any piece that makes its way into our bag has to earn its place. Dresses are no exception. Here are our criteria for the perfect travel dress:

1. Packability – lightweight, wrinkle resistant

2. Versatility – I don’t pack anything that I can’t wear more than once. Clothing that has more than one good option is the best way to pack light. Choose a casual dress that can go from daytime touring to evenings out with an accessory or two. A dress that’s convertible gets extra points!

3. Low Maintenance/Ease of Care – who has time for doing laundry on vacation? A sink wash and air dry are usually the most we do on vacation.

4. Sustainable Quality – don’t be fooled by fast fashion. Invest in well made, classic items from ethical companies. Not only is this best for the planet, but it’ll save you money in the long run.

5. Comfort and Pleasure – (Probably the most important yet often forgotten criteria) Do I like how I feel in this dress? Does it work for my body type? Does it fit my personal style? Do I enjoy wearing it?

Save space by packing natural fiber clothing that can be worn multiple ways. Willow merino dress by wool&. #merinowool #travelclothing

Choose your color, a dress style you like, and fabric that travels well

Color . The foundation of the French woman’s style is the little black dress. This staple piece is simple yet classy and never goes out of fashion. When creating a French-inspired travel wardrobe , I start with a solid color dress – the base palette – and add color and patterns with other pieces and accessories. Parisian women may favor black as their base, but you should choose what’s best for you, and your skin tone. Navy blue, wine, or dark gray can be more flattering to women over 60. They certainly are for me.

Style . Your choice will depend on your signature style and your destination. Sleeveless styles are great for hot climates, and will work just as well in cold weather when you add layers! But some ladies prefer long sleeves. And some love maxi dresses! (though maxis will take up more luggage space!) Go with what makes you comfortable and what flatters your best features.

Travel dress - woman over 60 wearing a merino wool dress.

Fabric . To earn its place in your bag the dress (and every item really!) has to be lightweight and easy to care for. This is where the fabric choice comes in. For example:

  • Cotton is heavy, retains odors, and takes forever to dry.
  • Linen is wonderful, but wrinkles can be frustrating.
  • Synthetics are very lightweight, but can retain odors.

For ease of care and sustainability we recommend choosing natural fibers such as bamboo, Tencel, and wool for your travel clothing.

Bamboo is quickly becoming a popular material for travel clothing. It’s sustainable and odor resistant.

Merino wool has a natural warmth and resiliency not found in other textiles. Merino sheep, bred originally in Spain, have ultrafine wool which doesn’t provoke the itchy reaction some people experience with wool. AND it’s naturally odor resistant. That means you can wear a merino wool item over and over again, with only an overnight airing out!

Our Top Pick for General Travel & Versatility:

Best dresses for travel offer versatility and easy care.

Wool& Merino Wool Dresses

Rowena swing dress, price: $138 USD

  • Packability: 11 oz., wrinkle resistant.
  • Versatility: simple swing dress, but can be styled as a top or tunic
  • Ease of Care: fabric is 78% ultrasoft merino wool and 22% nylon
  • Quality: very well made
  • Comfort and Pleasure: temperature regulating, very comfortable, and has pockets!

I discovered Wool&, a small Oregon company producing merino wool clothing, through a Facebook ad. To prove the durability and natural odor resistance of merino wool, the company challenged people to wear their dress for 100 days straight. (I can’t imagine they expected this challenge to be so popular or to inspire an online community of women sharing the ups and downs of daily life over 100 days! No doubt the kindest group on social media!) Needless to say, given my interest in merino wool clothing, I was intrigued.

I base my capsule wardrobe on my favorite color, navy blue, so I opted for the Wool& signature item, the Rowena swing dress in marine blue. It’s a wonderful rich blue and I’m thrilled with the color. The dress has a boat neckline which is very flattering (and protective in the sunshine). As this is a swing dress, the body of the dress is loose, flowy, and flattering to my body shape. The material is light and lends itself to dozens of styling tricks and outfit ideas shared by the Facebook community. (There are many different colors available for this and other Wool& dresses)

My Wool& Review: Is this the best dress for traveling?

Styling a multiway travel dress as a tunic. Older woman in NYC

For the first month of the challenge, I played with the dress. I shopped my closet, pulling out long neglected items to pair with the dress. It was fun being creative with a simple piece of clothing, and truly surprising to pull out the dress each morning to find it as fresh as the day it arrived !

Then I got serious and began testing the dress for travel. I limited myself to a small capsule and worked on different outfits for different travel scenarios. First I wore the dress to my grandchild’s christening, and then another granddaughter’s lacrosse game. I wore it during zoom meetings, neighborhood clean-ups, and even for bike rides. The Wool& Rowena came through every time.

I had two opportunities to travel during this time – once to NYC for a fun weekend, and once to Texas for a sad event. The dress became my nightgown in Texas and gave me comfort.

Ease of Care: I aired out the dress every night – flipped it inside out and hung it over a bar. I sink-washed the dress six times and washed it in the washer once just to test durability. (I did use a lingerie bag) Day 100 the dress looked as fresh as on day 1.

Wool& offers several other travel dresses with pockets, including french terry dresses like the Sierra, a sleeveless option that’s very popular with travelers, the Everett, a tunic length sweater dress, and the Willow, a 3/4 sleeve swing dress with a V-neck.

Merino wool dresses are also offered by Icebreaker and Smartwool. Both brands produce quality goods so I’d feel confident ordering one of these if you find a style that suits you!

Amazon carries merino wool clothing at a more affordable price. I haven’t tried any of these so can’t speak to the quality. Let me know if you recommend them!

Best for a Special Event While Traveling

Chico's travelers collection includes many stylish dresses for travel all packable travel dresses.

Chico’s Travelers Collection – dresses

  • Price: ~$100-109 USD
  • Packability: wrinkle resistant
  • Versatility: n/a
  • Ease of Care: machine or sink wash
  • Fabric: 96% acetate, 4% elastane. From website: Our Travelers Classic collection contains Eastman Naia™, a sustainable cellulose fiber derived from wood pulp.
  • Comfort and Pleasure: stylish, and flattering. Fabric has a bit of stretch for extra comfort

These packable travel dresses would be perfect for date nights, a destination wedding or afternoon tea party . Chico’s designs these dresses for all but I think the dresses, with their simple lines and great style, appeal especially to mature women. I like the mid-length pencil skirt look, but Chico’s also has cocktail dresses.

I don’t own any of these gorgeous dresses above because I have another Chico’s dress, bought 10 years ago, that still looks great! It’s a floral print and always in my luggage if I want to add a beautiful dress to my bag!

Our Favorite Convertible Travel Dresses

Origami by Diane Kroe

Diane Kroe Origami travel dress. Best convertible dress for travel, truly a multiway travel dress

  • Price: $150 CAD
  • Packability: wrinkle resistant, but at 14.3 oz, not particularly lightweight
  • Versatility: converts to multiple new looks – dress, halter top, batwing top, skirt
  • Ease of Care: Dress is made from 92% poly and 8% spandex, so not a natural fabric, but it dries quickly and resists wrinkles.
  • Quality: well made in Canada
  • Comfort and Pleasure: stylish and extremely comfortable!

I’ve been a customer of Diane Kroe Designs for many years. I love the versatility of the collection. The Origami is one of my favorites. Usually I wear it as a top with skinny jeans or white pants, but I love having the option to wear it as a dress when traveling. This piece is great for older women travelers. The shape and drape are stylish and forgiving.

The main thing about convertible clothing is the style options while traveling. I’ve packed this dress specifically for special events but reached for it later in the trip as a light layer.

Best Dress for Sun Protection

Coolibar (Malta) Travel Shirt Dress –

Note: After first posting about this travel dress, the company kindly sent me one for review.

Price: $115 USD

Coolibar striped shirt dress for travel

  • Versatility: wear it as a shirt dress, an opened jacket, or tie the ends to make a cute button-down shirt.
  • Ease of Care: fabric is quick dry. Machine or hand wash in cold water,
  • Fabric: from the website: Antimicrobial fabric that is lightweight, breathable and soft to the touch. With 4-way stretch it is naturally wrinkle resistant and moisture wicking.
  • Comfort and Pleasure: a travel (and home!) classic style

What makes this a great choice? The Coolibar brand produces stylish clothing with sun protection – great for us older women! This shirt is rated UPF 50 and is breathable making it a great option for days of intense sun. The collar and cuffs can be adjusted to give maximum sun coverage.

Another great feature of the Malta is the hidden, zipped side pockets!

I was gifted the black version of the this dress. It is remarkably lightweight and cool. I wore it to a recent event – belted over leggings – and received lots of compliments!

Visit the Coolibar website for other dress styles for travel and sun protection .

Best of the rest: more suggestions for travel dresses

Athleta is one of my favorite brands for comfortable travel-friendly pants. I haven’t had the chance to try any of their dresses, but they offer several cute – short and sporty – dresses. You’ll find similar dresses at TitleNine.

For hard-working dresses suitable to many overseas trips check out Travelsmith, Magellan Travel Catalog, Lands End, L.L. Bean, and Orvis. These classic travel clothing companies will often have something that fits our easy-care, lightweight, wrinkle-free standards.

An option often offered in travel dresses is a reversible dress – pattern on one side and solid on the other. This might work for you, but I donated mine as it was too heavy. Some reversible dresses, like mine, are actually a two layer dress (a black sheath inside a patterned sheath). Thus the dress is heavier than a single layer dress.

A variant of the reversible dress that I do like is a dress with two necklines. Basically you can wear the dress back or front depending on the neckline you want. I love my Wool& Summer midi dress which has a high neckline and a v-neck neckline. This actually does give versatility to my travel wardrobe!

Have I convinced you to pack a dress for your travel?

Some last thoughts. The right dress can be endlessly useful during your travels. Wear it to a nice dinner? of course! But you can also wear it when you’re on a bus tour, for a hike in the mountains, and even sometimes as a workout tunic over exercise tights. (believe me. I’ve done it several times!)

Look in your closet first to see if there’s a dress that’ll be versatile, stylish, and easy care for your trip. If you need to buy a new dress find one that you can see wearing several times on your travels. Take some time before you leave to try the dress on, and play with accessories. That’s the best time to see if the dress deserves a place in your travel capsule wardrobe .

What do you think? Will a dress fit into your travel wardrobe?

Tip: for maximum comfort (and modesty) consider wearing leggings or bike shorts under your dress. I love my merino wool shorts by Wool& , Frankie Bike Shorts and Summit Shorts- both keep me fresh and comfortable and have pockets!

The best dresses for travel are lightweight, easy-care, and versatile. Choose merino wool for the ultimate travel dress. #travelstyle #traveldresses #merinowool ##womenoversixty

10 thoughts on “ The best lightweight, easy-care women’s travel dresses ”

I’m about to embark on the Wool& 100 day challenge, and this post has me excited about all the possibilities! I’ve been interested in capsule wardrobes for a while. This might be my moment!

Oh my goodness! All the yesses!!!! I’ve done the challenge (in a Ro!) as well and am a full on convert to not only a merino wool fan but it has affirmed my love, desire, and need for a capsule wardrobe for every day and more.

I am finally getting to travel again soon and my Wool& dresses are all I’m planning on taking for core outfit pieces!

So, I have to ask, is the merino wool cool to wear? I am at the age where I am wearing t-shirts when everyone else is bundled up!

Yes! At least that’s my experience. The dress I purchased was long sleeved, and would not be ideal for a woman who’s usually hot. I have since purchased a sleeveless and short sleeved dress. Both wonderful on hot days.

Well I’ll definitely be reconsidering packing dresses in the future. Thanks!

🙂 Looking forward to seeing pictures of you in those dresses!

I’ve just purchased a SmartWool sleeveless dress for a trip to Italy, but don’t know about shoes. Was planning to take only athletic shoes for comfort but they don’t look good with the dress. Suggestions?

Loved your article and Wool&. What tool did you use to gather up the Rowena (one had the Rowena as a top, it looks as if it is plastic and round). Thanks for this article. I was looking for ways to elevate the styling of the dress.

Hi Joy, I use a scarf ring/loop I purchased from Amazon. I’m sure you can find one at a fabric store too!

Another trick you can use with either the scarf loop, or a smaller circular thing like a coin, is to place the loop either under or over the dress and gather the fabric around it with an elastic. It makes either a cute pucker or a button.

When you’re traveling, a comfortable and stylish pair of pants is essential. Find out why the Athleta Ponte Moto 2.0 pants are the best pair of pants for travel, plus other Athleta pants recommendations!

Athleta Ponte Moto 2.0 Pants Review

We and our readers love Athleta. And not just love, but LOVE. They make some of the best clothing for travel, from dresses to basic tees to pants. Here, we’re focusing on their best pants for travel, starting with the most well-loved pair among our readers: the Ponte Moto 2.0 pants.

athleta-ponte-moto-pants-review

Ponte Moto 2.0

The Athleta Ponte Moto 2.0 pant is the “getaway essential” for its sleek, sophisticated looks, 4-way stretch and ability to unpack ready to go. It’s a fitted style that fits like a legging with a mid rise and skinny leg.

One reader says, “I have these from last year and I love them. With a tunic and boots, they can look dressy, but with other tops, more casual. They’re also super comfy and they wash well.”

The Ponte Flex fabric offers four-way stretch with a structured fit. They’re easy to move around in while still looking sleek.

One reader says, “I just bought these in December and took them on my trip to Europe. So comfy and they look great with tunic length sweaters.”

One of the best things about these pants is the durability. The fabric is wrinkle-resistant, so it stays smooth in your bag, they fit easily into a slim packing cube and hardly weigh anything at all. They are easy to care for and wash, making it a great pant for traveling with as you can hand wash it or toss it in a washing machine.

One reader says, “I bought these few weeks for for my work capsule wardrobe (I work in sports medicine, so I need to be professional but all be able to get down on the ground and be active). Worn them for 4 days without any sign of wear! Love them.”

athleta-ponte-moto-pants-review

It can be difficult to know what size to get for a jegging style pant, as they sometimes run smaller than a normal pant. One reader says, “I think they run a little bit small so if you are in between sizes like I am, I’d size up,” while another adds, “They do run a bit small through the wais. I agree that sizing up is a good idea if you tend to be in between sizes.”

However, keep in mind that they offer a lot of stretch, with one reader sharing that they “ stretch in all the right places.”

Where to Wear Them

We love that these pants look dressy enough to wear to work while being comfy enough for travel. One reader says “they are perfect for work, travel, anything!” It’s important to note that these aren’t as thin as leggings, as they’re more a mid-weight fabric.

One reader says, “I find them to be pretty thick – more like jeggings,” while another adds, “They are medium/heavier weight. They should be good in spring, fall, and winter but I probably won’t wear them in summer.”

While they may not be the best for summer travel, they’re perfect year-round for airplane travel! One reader says, “I LOVE these Athleta pants. No bagging, sagging, or stretching out. They will be my airline and train pants for Europe,” while another adds, “I agree they are great airplane pants for long haul flights!”

The perfect pants can help you minimize your travel wardrobe. Read more tips about how to create a functional but minimalist capsule wardrobe with Pack Light Stylishly !

Is the Chelsea wide leg pant a high rise or mid rise?

Virginia Schmidt

I have several pants from Athleta and they all fit differently, some small, some big. Irritating

Shay

I take it you wouldn’t recommend these for South East Asia? Also how do you find them for handwashing and drying? Do they dry quickly?

Alex

Hi Shay, I am afraid that the Athlete Ponte Moto 2.0 pants are unfortunately no longer available, we are looking to update this post as soon as possible. You may like one of the other 7 different styles found towards the end of the article. Stephanie

I don’t think they’re making the moto pant–I’ve checked every time this post comes up and they’re either clearance with low inventory or not even on the website. Too bad because they’re super cute! You might want to revise this post.

Hi Stephanie, that is so unfortunate 🙁 !hank you for making me aware of this, I will definitely look at changing the post.

Consider This Your Late-Summer Packing Guide, No Matter the Destination

Published on 7/8/2022 at 3:25 PM

athleta travel dresses

Craving that last escape of the season? Consider this the sign you need to go ahead and book that beach getaway, surprise your best friend with a weekend road trip, or take that solo adventure you've been dreaming about. Then, it's time to think about packing, because you can save time, space, and yes, even money by sticking to your carry-on this travel season. All you have to do is pack wisely.

Consider pieces that are versatile and can transition from setting to setting (think: pants you can sightsee in but also wear to a nice dinner or a dress you can toss a cardigan over if the weather changes). Look for staples that you can mix and match so you can plan your outfits around a few key items. Most importantly, look for effortless pieces that are packable, totable, and can take the wear and tear of travel.

Shop the following products from Athleta to get that travel-ready wardrobe that's versatile, carry-on friendly, and stylish all at the same time.

Farallon Weekender Pant

Farallon Weekender Pant

The soft organic cotton of the Farallon Weekender Pant ($109) means this is one piece that's always lightweight, breathable, and easy to rewear while traveling. The slimmed crop ankle and drawstring waist make this a great transitional option that can go from city exploring to lounging to brunch seamlessly.

Main Image

Levitate Poplin Tee

Don't be fooled by the stylish Levitate Poplin Tee ($129) — this top is ready for adventure. Crafted from performance poplin with water repellent fabric finish, this top is breathable, stretchy, and protects against light mists.

Main Image

Brooklyn Jumpsuit

When it comes to travel-ready fashion, nothing is as versatile as the Brooklyn Jumpsuit ($129). This piece can be paired with a sweater, jacket, sneakers — you name it — and be ready. Plus, we love that it's made from ultra-light and comfy Recycled Featherweight Stretch™ fabric that feels great and is quick-drying so you can stay comfortable day to day.

Main Image

Hike Packable Top

As much as we love versatility when it comes to travel clothing, we also love pieces that are resilient. The Hike Packable Top ($99) is a master of just that, with its packable fabric that airs wrinkles out in a breeze and remains abrasion-resistant at the same time.

Main Image

Savannah Skirt

Talk about another piece that works overtime: The Savannah Skirt ($89) can go from breakfast to dinner, the beach to the restaurant, and everywhere in between. Not only is this piece wrinkle- and abrasion-resistant, but it's also rated UPF 50+ for summer sun protection.

Main Image

Breeze Packable Tote

Although it may not be clothing, never underestimate the power of travel-ready accessories like the Breeze Packable Tote ($29). This tote is perfect for those days when you just don't know what to expect. This tote folds up small in your backpack, purse, or carry-on and is ready when you need it.

Main Image

Farallon Midi Short

When it comes to making summer apparel travel-friendly, light and airy is key. That's exactly why we like the Farallon Midi Short ($79), which allows airflow to move easily through the garment so you can hike, explore, lounge, beach comb, and more without fear of generating too much heat and sweat.

Main Image

On My Way Triumph Hoodie

Of course, a good traveler is a smart traveler. That means having that just-in-case piece on hand like the On My Way Triumph Hoodie ($139). The organic cotton fabric is lightweight, stretchy, and breathable — it's especially ideal for the traveler looking to bounce from different locations and climates without packing extra luggage.

Main Image

Excursion Waistbag

The name says it all: The Excursion Waistbag ($88) is ready for an adventure. This sling-style bag is ready for just about any travel itinerary from the mountains to the desert. Not only is it water-repellant and snag-resistant, but it's also surprisingly spacious thanks to interior zipper stash pockets.

Main Image

Ryder Dress

Topping off our must-list for summer travelers is the Ryder Dress ($129). This particular piece was made with both comfort and style in mind. Thanks to the buttery-soft Powervita rib top and Featherweight Stretch skirt, this dress feels soft and light on the body. But don't worry, it's not skimping on performance: sweat-wicking fabric draws sweat away to the surface of the fabric so it can evaporate easily, leaving you dry and comfortable.

Renew Seamless Racerback Tank

I’ve been trying to track down the perfect grey racerback tank, and this one from Athleta looks like it could be in the running. Not to mention, it’s made from recycled polyester, nylon, and spandex, so it already has a leg up on its counterparts. Not a fan of light gray tanks? There are eight other fab colors to choose from in sizes XXS through 3X, with some on sale for as low as $20 during the ongoing sale.

Athleta Retreat Wide Leg Linen Pant

Retreat Wide Leg Linen Pant

Ever since last summer, I’ve been trying to get my hands on a pair of linen pants. However, the biggest problem I encountered was sizing. What options are there for folks on the shorter side? Athleta’s Retreat Wide Leg Linen Pant . It comes in five colorways, a wide array of sizes, and three size ranges: Regular, Tall, and Petite.

Athleta Santorini Maxi Dress

Santorini Maxi Dress

I thrifted a dress with a similar silhouette to this one and have been wanting another version in different colors. I think I might’ve just found its near-perfect match in the Santorini Maxi Dress . It’s airy, flowy, and can easily be dressed up or down.

Athleta Aurora Seamless One Shoulder Tank

Aurora Seamless One Shoulder Tank

I’m always game for a one-shoulder top, and this tank it the kind of shirt I could see myself wearing on repeat all summer long. Style it with jeans, shorts, skirts, or leggings—the options are endless!

Athleta Elation V-Neck Hybrid Dress

Elation V-Neck Hybrid Dress

I’m a firm believer that everyone needs an LBD—that is, a long black dress —in their spring and summer wardrobes. They’re so easy to style in any direction, especially when you’re in a rush and have no clue what to wear.

Athleta Ace Tennis Skort 13.5”

Ace Tennis Skort 13.5”

I’m also a firm believer in sporting activewear for a night out. I already have a stretchy, plain black skirt with a crossover waist that doubles as a going-out garment, and I’ve never felt so comfortable while in sweaty, claustrophobic bars. The Ace Tennis Skort reminds me of my beloved, versatile skirt. It’s breathable, wicking, and the fabric dries fast so if you’re getting down on the dance floor or someone accidentally splashes a bit of their drink on you, at least you know your skort will survive.

For me, it’s always been a challenge to pack a bag and choose just one or two dresses that will be versatile enough to wear in different types of weather and various occasions for a single trip.

In fact, one thing I never let myself do was explore the different types of cool travel dresses out there, for women on the go. I’ve always packed a patterned maxi dress, layered it with a jean jacket, and called it a day. But I could be doing better!

I’ve learned that there are travel dresses out there made by great brands that have invented fabrics that zap moisture and sweat, minimize odors (who doesn’t get stinky on a plane?) and come with pockets .

In the list that follows, I’ve picked a few of the best dresses on the market for women travelers, so that you don’t have to do the work! Let’s dig in.

Bluffworks Threshold T-Shirt Dress

If there was ever a T-shirt dress that really rocked my world, it’s this new one from Bluffworks , the brand that builds great travel clothes for women. In the past, I’ve found T-shirt dresses to hit the wrong places on my body, but this one is both flattering and comfy. Plus, it has hidden POCKETS!

athleta travel dresses

The Threshold T-shirt Dress is made from the Bluffworks proprietary Threshold fabric, which is moisture-wicking, wrinkle-resistant and of course, machine washable. It has UPF 50+ sun protection too, which is great for anyone who plans to spend sunny warm days exploring a new city or on a cool excursion.

My favorite part of this dress is that it comes in petite sizing and I actually feel great in it. I feel like I struck gold, because dresses often hit my legs too far down and look like I am drowning. It comes in regular sizes by default, and if you’re short like I am, opt for petite sizes!

athleta travel dresses

I think this T-shirt travel dress is priced pretty affordably for all the versatility it provides. I could wear it from spring to fall, layered with scarves, cardigans or tights and boots for cool nights on a trip. In these photos, I’m wearing it with my Troubadour Momentum backpack .

Check out this stylish dress to wear on an upcoming trip!

Aviator Chambray Travel Dress

This long-sleeve denim-look travel dress from Aviator is a new one of my travel finds. It’s a sturdy chambray and I can dress it up with sandals in spring or boots in the fall. What stands out to me about this dress is of course, the pockets, which even have Aviator’s signature YKK zippers. I like it so much I wrote this detailed review about it !

athleta travel dresses

If you’ve seen my review of the Aviator jeans for travel in my list of the best travel pants for women , you could consider this the “dress version” of those.

This chambray dress has a waist tie for closure and flattery, and comes in sizes XS to 2XL, which I find really inclusive of the folks at Aviator. I prefer to wear it with the sleeves folded up, as I’m not one for the long-sleeve look.

athleta travel dresses

I’ll note that for my Aviator travel dress, I had to have it additionally altered and taken in at the shoulders and at the length because I’m petite. Now it fits great! Most women say it fits between “to size” and “on the big side.” You might want to size down.

If you’re looking for other layers from Aviator, check out my review of the merino wool hoodies for travel .

Try out Aviator's newest travel product for women during your next trip.

Free Fly Women’s Breeze Dress

If you’re taking a warm-weather trip that’s bound to get you into humidity, try out the Free Fly Women’s Breeze Dress . I own it in Baltic Amber and in size XS, and the feel of it is like nothing I’ve ever had in my closet before.

This dress folds up small in our Peak Design packing cube and is made of a special material blend that’s meant to handle heat and humidity like a breeze . There’s an adjustable waistband at the waist, pockets on the sides (with a hidden zipper pocket - YAY!) and UPF 50+ sun protection for sunny days on vacation.

It also makes a perfect swimsuit coverup for the pool, the beach or a lake, because of the quick-dry fabric.

Free Fly Women's Breeze Dress

Embrace the breeze in this lightweight dress that handles heat and humidity.

Quince European Linen Dress

I’m a fan of Quince, and can’t find much wrong with everything this company makes, especially at such affordable prices. The Quince European Linen Dress immediately makes me wish I was strolling the streets of Lisbon and about to take a quick photo with a hand-painted tile wall. Know what I mean?

It has a timeless style and it has pockets , so you have somewhere to put some (not too valuable) essentials while on the go and on vacation. For things that hold real value like your credit cards, I’d go with a travel fanny pack or belt bag , just because the pockets on this dress don’t have zippers like the Aviator dress does.

Nevertheless, the price can’t be beat for being made of linen, and I adore the color palette it comes in.

Get free shipping, plus 365-day returns now!

Another note for short women: this one may hit too low on your leg, so check out Quince’s other dress options for a dress like the Quince Smocked Mini Dress that I can’t wait to try! I’m looking forward to putting them all in my Quince carry-on suitcase .

Keep it chic and simple with the Quince European Linen Dress, a timeless piece for any season.

Bluffworks Threshold Tie Waist T-Shirt Dress

The Threshold Tie-Waist T-Shirt Dress is the second dress from Bluffworks for women travelers that really packs a punch. It has a flattering look that is not too tight, and originally the tie-waist scared me off, but it works out really well. It can be worn in the front (my preference), or even the back. Check out the photos here.

At an affordable price point for the quality you get with Bluffworks, I think this one’s an easy decision. This type of dress can be totally casual for a day to day while traveling, and would look nice as a base layer for more business casual outfits if you have that use during your trip.

athleta travel dresses

This one differs from the Bluffworks original T-shirt dress because it has the nice touch of cuffed sleeves, and I like this a lot. The Threshold fabric that you’ll also find in Bluffworks’ Threshold tees for women is great for travel because it’s moisture-wicking, odor-resistant, has UPF 50+ sun protection and is machine-washable.

What’s the best about this travel dress are the pockets, and you can expect great pockets in women’s attire from Bluffworks. There are six! Two are interior phone pockets, nested inside other pockets.

athleta travel dresses

One of the biggest benefits is that this tie-waist style is a classic, so if you put your budget toward a dress like this, it’ll last for years.

See why this travel dress makes a great wardrobe staple.

Icebreaker Women’s Merino Granary Sleeveless Dress

I learned about the Icebreaker brand because Dan really likes his Icebreaker merino wool crew sweatshirt . I was glad to find out that Icebreaker makes great women’s apparel in their signature merino wool blend.

Merino wool is one of the best materials for travel, because it’s soft and strong, as well as lightweight and fine. The Granary Sleeveless Dress is 100% merino wool and is a minimalist travel dress with a subtle cap sleeve and a modest knee length.

A dress like this would be good if you plan to take a trip that involves some sightseeing that requires modest dress, like religious temples or sacred places — think Israel or Sri Lanka .

athleta travel dresses

As for fit, it runs pretty long and overall, I think Icebreaker runs big in women’s sizes. If you are a pretty standard build and average height, you still might want to size down . I have Icebreaker’s merino tee for women, and that runs big, too. Check out my photos for a close-up on the fabric and for how small it folds up in your luggage!

Icebreaker Women's Merino Granary Sleeveless Dress

Stay cool and comfortable with the Icebreaker Women's Merino Granary Sleeveless Dress, a versatile piece for any wardrobe.

Public Rec Go-To Tank Dress

I’m so glad that Public Rec has come out with some dresses! The cousin of the Public Rec Go-To Dress , the Go-To Tank Dress is a nice travel staple with a funky open back for style. It has a flirty fit and a top half that reminds me of the Public Rec muscle tank that I enjoy wearing as a travel shirt.

With a blend of Pima cotton (which I first discovered in the Public Rec Essential Tee ) and spandex, it’s an athletic fit and the material is durable. This one is great for travel in pretty hot temperatures and could be paired with my Public Rec Adapt Belt Bag .

athleta travel dresses

About the sizing: Public Rec typically runs true to size, as I’ve seen in my experience with the Public Rec Essential Tee , which is a true XS and fits like one. With the Go-To Tank Dress, it runs a bit wider than I’d like, so I have some fabric gaps at the side that will probably make this dress less of a “go” for me.

Keep this in mind about your build if you like this dress, because it’s good for larger-chested women (proportionally) as well as women who might feel like they have more of a standard (non-petite) body type.

Keep it simple and chic with the Public Rec Go-To Tank Dress, a perfect piece for any casual outing.

Athleta Elation V-Neck Dress

I became familiar with Athleta via my Athleta leggings with pockets that I mention in my list of the best travel pants for women . They make dresses, too! The Elation V-Neck Hybrid Dress is a pretty and flattering summery dress that I can’t stop looking at because it’s so breezy and easy.

It’s an ultralightweight dress made of polyester and spandex that comes in inclusive sizes of XS to 3XL! It’s fitted at the torso and then flares out for keeping you cool.

Embrace comfort and elegance with the Athleta Elation V-Neck Dress, perfect for casual outings or dressier occasions.

Toad & Co. Grom Tank Dress

This super casual v-neck dress from the brand Toad & Co. comes in both solids and stripes, and has hand pockets to boot! I’ll pair this one with sneakers or sandals for sure because it has a cool T-shirt vibe to it.

It’s made of hemp and organic cotton, so it dries fast, controls odors and is lightweight, making it a simple option to roll up into a packing cube for a tropical trip.

As a bonus, like with other products from Toad & Co., you can often find a few of the colors on sale at any given time.

Bask in the summer sun with the Toad & Co. Grom Tank Dress, your ultimate casual style statement.

Patagonia Regenerative Organic Certified™ Cotton Essential Dress

This long-sleeve casual dress from Patagonia caught my eye because it is super chill. And of course, I had to search for if it has pockets: it does! It has a totally relaxed fit, so think of pairing it with walking sneakers and a baseball cap. You could also wear it with leggings and boots in winter or fall.

As for specifics, this Patagonia travel dress is Fair Trade Certified™, and made from 100% Regenerative Organic Certified™ cotton. It has raglan-style sleeves, two slit pockets and that “Retro Fitz Roy Patagonia logo” that every traveler wants on their chest. What’s not to love?

Patagonia Cotton Essential Dress

This laid-back long-sleeve dress for chilled-out travelers has pockets and a cozy vibe.

tentree Arden Dress

The Arden Dress from tentree has pockets — can you believe it? This travel dress is a blend of Lyocell, recycled polyester and organic cotton that has a two-way stretch knit. For now, it comes in the “core color” of Meteorite Black.

I like the gathered neck, hand pockets, elastic gathered waist and sleeveless look. I’d wear this one in Central America or Southeast Asia, or a summer in Europe. This dress is specifically meant for summer, and for keeping you cool with the gentle fabric. Lastly, it’s easily machine washable.

Embrace comfort and sustainability with the tentree Arden Dress, crafted from recycled fabrics.

Free Fly Bamboo Heritage Midi Dress

Free Fly is an outdoorsy apparel brand made for life on the water, whether you are hanging at a lake or out on a boat. I slid this Free Fly dress on when I got it, and felt right at home in it! With a blend of cotton and bamboo viscose, it’s soft and airy.

It’s called a “midi” dress because it is supposed to fall at the mid-calf, but for me, at 5’2,” the hemline falls at my ankles in size XS. Keep this in mind!

The Heritage Midi Dress has UPF 50+ sun protection, and it is fitted at the top with a natural flow throughout the rest of the body. I like the flattering scoop neck and the hand pockets at the waist!

To see more products from Free Fly, check out my list of the best women’s travel shorts and you’ll find some recommendations there.

Free Fly Women's Bamboo Heritage Midi Dress

A breezy and comfortable cotton-bamboo viscose dress with a scoop neck.

prAna Jewel Lake Summer Dress

prAna’s cool high-neck flare dress is stretchy with a detailed back. It’s the only one of its kind, in this entire list of travel dresses!

There are pockets in this travel dress, too (two hand slit pockets at the hips). It has a built-in shelf bra (with removable pads), so that you don’t need to wear one if you don’t need to! I also think it’s an ideal day-to-night dress to bring on a warm and tropical trip. In the black color, you could even dress it up a whole bit more.

This high-neck relaxed dress is made for warm-weather holiday breaks.

KUHL Vantage Dress

KUHL is an adventure and outdoors brand, so I was glad to see they have a dress available for women travelers. The Vantage dress comes in four bold colors, and is sized XS-XL.

As all KUHL products are created for being on the go and being active, the dress has moisture management, odor resistance, sun protection at UPF 50+ and a four-way fabric stretch. There are pockets right below the elastic waist!

This travel dress is fairly casual, so if your trip is active (I probably wouldn’t wear this dress for biking or climbing) like if you’re camping, doing a lot of walking or going on an easy hike, pack this dress in your bag.

Dress to impress with the KUHL Vantage Dress, a versatile piece that combines comfort with contemporary fashion.

REI Co-op Trailmade Dress

Zipper pocket alert: the REI Co-op Trailmade Dress has one, for three pockets in total. It’s a dress that was actually designed for women who love to hike and be outdoors, with UPF 50+ sun protection.

As for the fabric, the REI Trailmade Dress is made of a lightweight nylon/spandex blend with 2-way stretch. It’s quick-drying and moisture-wicking, making it the ultimate dress for “roughing it.”

REI makes a point that this dress is geared toward women of all sizes, as it comes in sizes XS to 3XL.

Travel in style and comfort with the REI Co-op Trailmade Dress, perfect for all types of trips.

Peruvian Connection Le Marais Dress

Probably the most elegant dress in the list, this summery travel dress has a beautifully flattering neckline and a flare hem that will look pretty in photos. It’s a blend of pima cotton and spandex, so it has a slight stretch in its softness. It’s perfect as a go-anywhere dress that’ll pack up into a compression cube and be ready to go.

Peruvian Connection is a company founded from the love of Peruvian textiles, evolving into a global company. The brand’s mission is to support Andean artisans with luxurious fibers and to provide well-paying job opportunities locally.

Travel elegantly in this timeless dress with pockets

Why should you trust me?

I’ve been traveling on my own since 2009, and I know what makes a good piece of clothing to have in my suitcase!

I’ve been through items that have broken or ripped during trips, as well as clothes that have shown sweat, haven’t washed easily and haven’t stood the test of time.

The garments I recommend in this list are clothes I have personally tested already, or ones I plan to wear, and I’m happy with how they look and how they feel.

Also, the brands listed are ones from which I already own other travel clothes (check out my list of the best women’s pants for travel , as well as the best women’s shirts for travel ).

I got laid off and took a 'bridge job' in a clothing store. I'm loving it.

  • Hady Mendez worked as head of equality at a major tech company before being laid off.
  • She said it's been one of the most difficult times in her professional career.
  • Mendez said she's happier with the flexibility since starting her own business and a part-time job.

Insider Today

"I should totally go work there. I spend half my paycheck there anyway."

This was the conversation between me and my friend, Jannet. It's what I refer to as my famous last words before I applied for a retail job at a clothing store after working in corporate for 25 years.

It was the Fall of 2023. About nine months earlier, I had experienced a layoff from my job as head of equality for a major tech company where I worked remotely while serving as an advisor to our seven Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), a liaison to the office of equality, and a program manager. Almost immediately, I launched my business, Boldly Speaking , leaning on my speaker skills and years of experience with ERGs.

I was having a solid first year in my business, both from a client acquisition and revenue perspective, but I knew things were about to slow down due to the holiday season.

Enter my brilliant idea: Take on a "bridge job," a job that would give me the time and money I needed as I worked toward building my business or moving to my next big opportunity. The income would allow me to keep more of my savings intact. It would also allow me to buy coffee and treat myself to those gluten-free, vegan sweets I'd come to enjoy so much without feeling guilty.

I ended up working at an Athleta store in NYC, and I'm glad I decided to join that team. What sticks with me most is the confidence and joy I've found during a time filled with so much doubt and uncertainty.

Imagine what it was like to land a brand associate role in one of my favorite stores

Now is probably a good time to share that I love the Gap Inc. brand. About 90% of my clothes come from Athleta and Gap. I wear their clothes to business meetings, to hang out on the weekends, and to go for long walks. I'm quite literally a walking advertisement for this brand.

I landed a seasonal brand associate role and felt like a kid in a candy store. I've done everything from helping customers find clothing items, sweeping and mopping the floor, folding clothes, cleaning mirrors and windows, shipping items from the store, and ringing up customers.

I wanted to buy everything in my first few weeks on the job. Even as I was enjoying the experience of being around my favorite brand several days a week, I was learning a lot about the clothes, our customers, and the role every associate plays.

Related stories

There were some funny aspects to my transition. I like to get to places early, and I found out quickly there was no need to be more than five minutes early for my shift. Also, while I always made it a point to take a lunch break during my corporate days, now I'm actually legally mandated to take a 15-minute break during my shift (sometimes more if the shift is longer). I've learned to look forward to these breaks as an opportunity to reset and come back to the floor even stronger.

One thing that's really different from corporate is that we have daily goals for the store. Each day, we focus on a different sales target or objective.

What started as "seasonal work" has now become a part-time gig for me

Much like my tech and financial services jobs , my favorite part of working at the clothing store is interacting with customers.

I love to hear about what they're looking for, where they'll be wearing the items they purchase, and how they want to feel. What I love even more is the look on their face when they find an item that not only feels good but looks great too.

Surprisingly I've discovered I'm actually kind of good at this brand associate work. When I was younger, I worked for my father at his shoe store, and I remember being a lousy salesperson because I always wanted to be behind the register. But somehow, I inherited some of that great customer service "mojo" from my dad because customers enjoy working with me.

Part of me wants to go back to corporate life and a stable, predictable routine

Finding a full-time job in this market has been incredibly challenging while starting a business from scratch has presented its own unique set of challenges. It's definitely been a time of transition for me.

If I'm honest, it has been one of the most difficult times in my professional career. I've experienced a broad set of emotions since my tech layoff : shock, anger, fear, anxiety, worry, and even profound sadness.

What I miss most about corporate life is working on a major project or customer deliverable as a team. I pride myself in adding a lot of value in those types of scenarios — always finding ways to lean into my critical thinking superpowers to over-deliver and exceed customer expectations.

Another part of me really loves the flexibility and independence I experience as an entrepreneur

I have to say the flexibility I have as an entrepreneur is unmatched. I can take off whenever I want, be creative, and explore new projects, and am very much aligned with what I believe to be my purpose. Admittedly, I'm a bit spoiled by my current situation and know it will take a great company and role to bring me back to corporate.

Everything in life has a season. And I believe this has been my season to enjoy entrepreneurship with all of its ebbs and flows. I don't plan to leave my job at Athleta any time soon. The longer I work there, the more I realize I'm where I belong — for right now.

REI, Amazon, and More Are Having Under-the-radar Hiking Gear Sales — Shop the 10 Best Deals Up to 55% Off

A longtime backpacker shares her top picks from $17.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

Spring has sprung and the trails are calling. There are parks to explore, boots to break in , and summits to reach. Whether you’re new to hiking or, like me, due for (more than) a few gear upgrades , now’s the time to expand your kit as outfitters and retailers like REI, Amazon, and Backcountry are currently running sales on hiking gear galore. For a limited time, you can score brand-name trail essentials and outdoor gear on sale for up to 55 percent off.

After all, your gear can make or break your trip, so why not use this opportunity to save big on these pricey items before your next adventure? From my tried-and-true Osprey pack to Amazon’s best-selling women’s hiking boots and hydration bladders , here are the 10 best hiking gear deals that this longtime trekker , backpacker, and traveler is eyeing.

Osprey Archeon 45 Pack

Many seasoned hikers would agree that Osprey packs are the best on the market. They’re known for their quality, comfort, ergonomic fit, and for being truly ultra-light. Believe me, I lived out of a backpack for two years and every ounce that you don’t have to carry on your back matters. Right now, REI is offering 50 percent off this 45-liter Archeon style that’s ideally sized for multi-day hikes lasting from three days to up to a week. One reviewer called it the “best bag ever” and the most comfortable hiking pack they’ve ever worn — and after testing a range of other brands, I agree. As a bonus, it can sometimes pass as a carry-on on flights. Hurry, it's selling out fast!

Columbia Newton Ridge Plus Waterproof Amped Hiking Boots

Amazon’s no. 1 best-selling women’s hiking boots are also almost half off right now. With their full-grain leather uppers and eye-catching red laces, Columbia’s Newton Ridge Boots harken back to the traditional mountaineering style (a.k.a. the style resurrected by the iconic book cover of Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild”). The shoes have amassed more than 18,000 five-star ratings, with countless reviewers praising their durability and unwavering waterproof capabilities. The cushiony midsoles, arch and ankle support, and grippy traction also get high marks.

LifeStraw Personal Water Filter

LifeStraw is the OG portable water filter. You can stick the best-selling filter straw right into a stream and take a sip without having to worry about harmful bacteria, parasites, and microplastics. This tiny gadget, taking up less than 9 square inches in your pack, can be a lifesaver in emergency situations or just save your back from the stress of carrying excess water. Snag it for 22 percent off now; you won't regret adding it to your pack.

Athleta Trekkie North Joggers

These joggers are made with stretchy, moisture-wicking recycled nylon meant to resist tears when you inevitably get caught up in a branch on the trail. Although I haven’t tried them myself, I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews from my hiking friends — and just one look at the glowing testimonies from REI shoppers will tell you that these are quality hiking pants . This highly rated Trekkie North style is starting at $49, and sizes are selling out quickly.

Zimfem Portable Camping Chair

For this summer’s overnight hikes or the times when you just want a comfy seat when you reach your destination , a portable camping chair comes in handy. At 4.7 pounds, this is perhaps not the best chair to cover long distances with — proper backpacking chairs weigh more like 2 pounds to mere ounces — but it’s a very affordable option for shorter treks when you have room in your bag for a luxury item. Despite being a new release, it's already generating a lot of buzz among Amazon shoppers (more than 1,000 units were sold in the last month, according to the retailer). For packing convenience, the fabric seat separates from the frame, which folds down to fit into a relatively compact 17-inch by 7-inch carrying sack.

Gonii Low-cut Hiking Socks 4-pack

Good hiking socks are the key to preventing blisters. You want a material that balances breathability with cushioning, and Amazon reviewers say that these cotton-blend athletic ankle socks by Gonii hit that sweet spot. In fact, a shopper was happy to report that they kept their feet cool on a scorching-hot 20-mile walk. They come in your standard white, black, and gray hues, as well as fun pastels and bright colors. For a pack of five pairs, $15 is a true bargain.

Stoic Venture UPF Sun Hoodie

Backcountry

On a recent hike under the relentless sun in Sedona, Arizona, I noticed that the most seasoned and prepared people on the trail sported hoodies — a counterintuitive move when the temperature is approaching triple digits, but one that your skin will thank you for. This Stoic sun hoodie, on sale for 55 percent off at Backcountry, has UPF 50+ protection built right into it, making it a wearable sun shade. It’s made with lightweight and moisture-wicking recycled polyester, so you don’t have to worry about overheating or lingering sweat patches.

Baen Sendi 2-liter Hydration Bladder 2-pack

Maybe you’re the type to never leave home without your emotional support water bottle, but on the trail, hands-free hydration is the way to go . At 20 percent off, this pack of two Baen Sendi bladders is less than the price of one single CamelBak replacement reservoir (and way less than the buzzy water bottles and tumblers on TikTok). Reviewers say that it works just as well as its pricier counterparts and fits perfectly inside their brand-name hydration packs.

Willit Hiking Shorts

Thousands of Amazon shoppers have given these Willit Hiking Shorts five-star ratings for their comfort, stretch, and durability. They’re super versatile and can be worn off the trail, too — the hallmark of the perfect travel shorts. You get your pick of almost 30 colors and patterns like trail-ready camo and sleek graphite gray. They’re normally priced at $34, but with Amazon’s 26-percent-off deal plus an extra 10-percent-off coupon, they’re only $23 (a steal).

SealLine 5-liter Dry Bag

Helpful on drizzly days, in unexpected showers, and when you’re keen to cool off in a stream on your hike, a dry bag separates the wet from the dry — and is a useful tool to safeguard your valuables. Throw your camera gear and other electronics in it to protect them from water damage, or save it to hold your soaked swimwear until you get back to the campsite clothesline. In addition to hikes, this 5-liter dry bag is good to have handy for kayaking and paddleboarding missions.

Attractions In Moscow And The Mystery Yellow Dress

by Jub | Feb 23, 2016

After an intense 67 hour train ride we finally arrived in Moscow. I didn’t know much about Moscow, I’d heard of the Kremlin, Lenin and the Red Square (the last of which I’d heard of a couples week prior to arrival). The plan was to spend four days or so visiting the attractions in Moscow.

Oh, and many of the Russians we met on the Trans-Siberian train said “Moscow is not really part of Russia, it’s a different city.” Pretty much how many countries look upon their largest city but they were adamant we wouldn’t like the city.

After four days in Moscow I was very impressed by Moscow. There are several things to do in Moscow you shouldn’t miss, a couple of things you should look out for, others only if you’re staying in the region for a while and a couple that are worth skipping out on.

Attractions In Moscow

Moscow’s red square the centre of attractions.

The GUM Store viewed from Red Square

The GUM Store viewed from Red Square

The Red Square is something you have heard bits and pieces about. It’s the most obvious spot to start the tourism explorations for a full day, so that’s exactly what we did. When you arrive, you sort of just end up in the square.

I was really hoping the whole square would be red, it wasn’t to be but your definitely know when you’re in the Red Square. There isn’t a whole lot to do there other than get various snaps of the bits and pieces on the edges.

Let’s Go See Dead Lenin?

The graves near Lenin's body

The graves near Lenin’s body

There are Lenin (former Russian politician – read his Wiki if you want to known more) statues all over Russia and Eatern Europe. But nothing is more bizarre than seeing an actual preserved body, Lenin’s body. Regardless you ought to go.

It’s a free attraction in the Red Square and as long as you go early in the morning you can have it accomplished within minutes. Simply find the line in the Square…you’ll see the area where the body is soon enough, wait your turn, step down into the display cabinet area, walk past the body and feel hurried as you head back up to ground level again.

It’s a pretty whack experience to see Lenin’s body. I can definitely still picture it in my head, so plasticy! You may be allowed to take photos, but it just seems like a whacky experience and taking photos of dead bodies is awkward.

Check out Google image results of Lenin’s body here if you really want!

Kremlin Time…

One of several attractions in Moscow's Kremlin

One of several attractions in Moscow’s Kremlin

Next up, time to checkout the Kremlin. One side of the Krelim’s walls border the Red Square and for 500 rubles you can go into the grounds. We didn’t go until a bit later, but to be honest it was a bit of a let down. There are some interesting pieces but I just didn’t come out going WOW that was so interesting at any point in time. Watching the change of guard next to the Tomb of Unknown Soldier was more interesting than anything inside.

The change of guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The change of guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Maybe because we had been to the Armoury beforehand.

All The Shiny Armour!

When we purchased our ticket we thought for 800 ruble we were getting a ticket for both the Kremlin and the Armoury. That is not the case, just be aware of this when you visit. Sometimes the ticket queues are hectic and lining up twice is overrated.

Definitely go to the Armoury. It is epic! You get given an audio set with headphones and then you start your self guided tour. There are all sorts of bits and pieces to look at, including you guessed it – armour! There was lots of memorabilia throughout Russian history but most of all I liked the eggs.

They aren’t just any kind of eggs, but jeweled eggs which were first made in 1885. They were traditionally given as gifts from royal members to their wives or family to mark special occassions. They aren’t all looking the same that’s for sure, some have designs created outside them…others open up and have mini replicas such as trains and ships within them. They were so fun and it would be an awesome gift I’d be chuffed to receive when it’s personalised.

They were so cool, that the Faberge Museum was definitely on the bucket list when we visited St. Petersburg.

If you have just one day in Moscow, this will likely keep you busy for the whole day. But you will most likely be in the city for at least a few days so it’s time to continue on.

What was quite pretty too look at on the outside is St. Basil’s Cathedral, I wasn’t feeling inspired to go inside but the others I was with said it was awesome and being ranked #2 of 2000+ things to do in Moscow on TripAdvisor means I probably should have searched harder for the inspiration.

Looking For The Mystery Ladies In The Yellow Dress Costume

Picture above is the closest I could find on the Google machine.

I’m the opposite of a fashion guru but there are certain styles I still like. In Moscow there was this ‘fashion (probably the wrong word) where ladies would wear a yellow dress and yellow shoes. I’d never seen anything like it but it was something that definitely caught my eye. I saw maybe 8 or so girls wearing this costume and could spot them hundreds of metres away. Never got creepy enough to take a photo unfortunately. it was bizarre as I never saw these curious yellow costime wearers in St. Petersburg or anywhere else in Eastern Europe.

Stuff You Should Probably Do

Do a metro tour, yup, public transport is a tourist attraction.

Living in a big city, the metro probably means you are off to work giving you negative images in your mind. Moscow is different and the Metro is actually one of the must see attractions in Moscow. She’s a big city so unless you stay right by the Kremlin you’ll want to check out a few of the fanciest metro stations. The Metro is real cheap and efficient so it won’t take you to long. There’s plenty of resources listing the best stations, this one should do the trick.

Church of Ascension

The Church of Ascension one of my favourite Moscow attractions

The Church of Ascension one of my favourite Moscow attractions

I enjoy visiting parks in big cities, and having investigated teh UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Moscow I decided to head out to the Church of the Ascension. It was definitely worth the mission (still reachable by metro). The park was huge and while the Church is the centre piece most people have more fun exploring the various nooks and crannies of the park.

There was locals out getting their tan on next to the river and the people watching was fun having found a stretch of outdoor bars. Highly worth the visit if you need a break from people, concrete and are in Moscow for at least three days.

Be Dorky in Gorky Park

Gorky Park Monument

Gorky Park monument

Well, don’t be dorky but this is the place a lot of people seem to relax a bit more. You can chill out, investiage some art sales, walk along the river, play some sports, go for a run, all sorts.

Go High To Moscow State University

Moscow State University

Moscow State University, pretty

The Moscow State University building is one of the sevens sister buildings in Moscow. And is one of the highest points in Moscow, though the view isn’t spectacular. If you want to go for a large walk. Catch the metro to the University and follow the river back to Gorky Park (it takes a couple hours).

The building is pretty cool and they are fun to keep an eye out for. The Hilton Hotel for sunset is pretty spectacular.

The Hilton Hotel at night

The Hilton Hotel at night

Arbat Street, The Hipsters Zone

We were staying close by to Arbat Street. It’s the walking street in the city where lots of creatives are out and about and it’s lined with restaurants. We went for dinner here and then spent a good amount of time walking up the street where there is no shortage of things to catch your attention.

The Worst Of Moscow’s Attractions

Sports bars. what are they.

One of the State of Origin matches was being played while we were in Moscow, and I figured it wouldn’t be hard to find a sports bar in Moscow playing the game. It was an early afternoon match for our time zone and Moscow has plenty of sports in its culture.

Yet, I went to 6 bars who all advertised themselves as sports bars but they either had one small TV or none at all. Not sure what the reasoning is, but if you plan to watch sport on TV while you visit, plan in advance!

Pushkin Cafe Where People Push Up Their Noses At You

While in Moscow, I was trying to learn a bit about the history of the region (don’t think I’ll be a hero in your pub quiz team, the info didn’t stay in the brain for long). Pushkin is a well known Russian poet so trying to be all cultural and stuff decided to head to the Pushkin Cafe.

Unless you want to go for high tea where you pay through the roof, don’t bother. I walked in, didn’t feel welcome, sat down, got awkward and left.

Not quite the cultural thing I was looking for. Was simply an upmarket cafe utilising the Pushkin name to charge through the roof for what is probably stock standard food.

Visiting Izmaylovo Park

Vooooodka

We visited this park one morning and it was bizarre. It was like an abandoned amusement park. Apparently it was closed but there was a few things open still, inluding the Vodka Museum. Still definitely not worth the visit.

Where To Stay In Moscow

After our intense train ride we were told to get on the subway by one of our new fellow Russian friends (massive language barrier) and get off at a stop in the heart of town. As we walked out the the subway world my first sight was of the massive intersection and the greyness of the buildings.

We had no idea where we would be staying so we decided to go straight to the travellers trustiest WiFi resource, Macca’s! We ended up meeting an ex-pat American who had relocated his family to Moscow so he can teach English, the loved the lifestyle.

He introduced himself having heard us bantering in English, something that’s not very common he said. After a few recommendations from him we decided to head to Bear hostel .

We struggled to find the hostel having found the building it was supposedly in. Unlike the western world, branding is very minimal and throughout Russia and eastern Europe. Finding hostels wasn’t ever easy.

Once we arrived, all was well. It wasn’t the most social of places but adequate for our needs and is a good balance between price and location for the backpackers on a budget.

I Didn’t Enjoy St. Petersburg

After enjoying Moscow, hopes were high for St. Petersburg. Yet, I just didn’t really enjoy it. I think it was simply because there’s so many people in the city which made it impossible to walk in a straight line down the pavement. It’s wasn’t that bad I guess. FABERGE MUSEUM! Moscow simply was my preferred city of the two.

Is It Safe To Visit Russia?

With all of the ISIS related drama going on, Russia has been in the headlines for various aspects of the role they are playing in the ordeal (I’m no expert on the place). Unlike other countries however, there isn’t much in the way of terrorism happening in Moscow, or the rest of Russia. I’m not sure why but it is what it is and no one seems to be saying ‘don’t visit Russia’.

The way I see it? The world is a massive place. Moscow’s population is over 10,000,000. It would be a rather unfortunate sequence of events to take place for you to end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. I had a bunch of calculations written out but deleted them, fail. I really hope terrorism stops completely but that’s wishful thinking right now.

So is travelling to Moscow safe? YES! There are so many Attractions in Moscow, you’ll find something you love. If you have been, let me know what your highlights were.

is there any dress code while visiting museums and/or galleries?

also, we have bolshoy tkts. can i go there with jeans+t shirt (that's usually the way i dress during my vacation...)??

athleta travel dresses

> is there any dress code while visiting museums and/or galleries?

> we have bolshoy tkts. can i go there with jeans+t shirt

http://bolshoi.ru/en/visit/sbory/

Be aware more casual attire (such as shorts) may get you stopped from visiting a church...but many will offer wraps and head coverings for women,

never bothered in church from visiting with T shirt and on summer time, even with shorts.

> even with shorts

Why ask about dress code then if you ignore it.

Imho jeans and t-shirt for Bolshoy is inappropriate, so are sneakers and other sports wear. Although in some other theater like Taganka and, Lenkom, for example, it will pass as OK.

There is no written or legal dress code with museums or the Bolshoi for the simple reason that here the people who visit theatres and museums do not need to be instructed on how to dress appropriately.

http://www.bolshoi.ru/en/visit/sbory/

i do not ignore it.

usually we travel during summer time. usually - shorts.

i was never asked not to go inside a church because of this outfit. if someone would asked me to stay out - ill understand.

my wife is worried that i might stay out of the bolshoi if ill come with my jeans...

if someone would have asked me not to go in the bolshoi since i'm wearing my jeans - well, this is something i rather know - in advance (tkts already purchased..)

If tickets are already purchased why don't you just pack a pair of slacks, dress shoes and one collared shirt/ polo.

It's a cultural place your look is a reflection of your understanding and respect.

since i'm not coming from hotel. it will be the end of my day at city.i will not carry extra outfit for that, unless i know i have no choice.
