foreigners journey logo

At one point not too long ago, they toured the world as a one-two combination, but don’t count on it happening again. Luckily, you can count on Foreigners Journey, a veritable tribute-band supergroup, to deliver the unforgettable experience of seeing both bands in one knockout show.

Foreigners Journey comprises veteran members of the music scene, guys who’ve made it with their own original music. But since 2014 they’ve also dedicated themselves to something larger, a supergroup intent on bringing the sounds, sights, and emotional thrills of two of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest bands to eager fans around the Northeast and beyond.

Featuring American Idol Rudy Cardenas on Lead Vocals. Keyboardist Paul Kochanski, Bassist Joe Pettengill and Drummer Art Mambuca (and his sprawling double kick-drum kit) all played together in the Journey tribute band Captured. And, rounding out the band is hotshot Guitarist Kevin Herrera.

Their repertoire of note-for-note classics by Foreigner and Journey provide a crowd-pleasing night of unforgettable music, ready for singing along, jumping out of your seat to bounce and sway, or maybe even slow dancing (for those nostalgic for high school in the ‘80s). From power ballads like “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” “I Want to Know What Love Is,” and “Open Arms” to anthems like “Hot Blooded,” “Don’t Stop Believin’,” and “Any Way You Want It,” Foreigners Journey are more than a tribute band. They’re a time machine, and their energy is infectious.

Constantine Maroulis Takes Rock Fans On a (Foreigners) Journey at BergenPAC / September 25, 2021

In life, sometimes we need a little escape, and sometimes that’s found in returning to the music we grew up with. Other times, it’s found in the off-the-wall talent and good looks of one Rock of Ages star covering said songs we grew up with. To each their own.

Foreigners Journey is a tribute band – that much is true. It’s not too much of a throwback show, though there is an air of nostalgia swirling around the rafters when they hit the stage. As the Boston-hailing band took on Bergen County’s Performing Arts Center this weekend for the New Jersey debut, concert goers quickly realized that with Constantine Maroulis taking the lead, Foreigners Journey had become much more than a classic rock revival.

Maroulis has seen his fair share of stages throughout the course of his career, ranging from those that were nationally televised to those found in hole-in-the-wall clubs. Somehow gritty and flamboyant at the very same time, the Brooklyn-born rockstar is the perfect choice of frontman for Foreigners Journey. He doesn’t age, which is great for a performer with such a distinctive look. Long hair that’s flipped around, looking taller than most in skinny jeans? That’s a star. Although, it is the way that he makes a smoldering look into the crowd look charming that proves his versatility. For every man and woman throwing themselves at him, there is another set of fans looking up to him for all the right rockstar moves.

The former American Idol contestant has found a way to balance his quick wit, bad-boy aura, and alluring talent with immense fatherly love, Broadway-style theatrics, and casual anecdotes. A contradiction of sorts, the old soul that Constantine Maroulis is works well for the crowd coming out to appreciate the thirty-something-year-old music of Foreigner and Journey (and Queen and Quiet Riot, if you’re lucky).

The BergenPAC show opened with “Separate Ways” by Journey, because it was about to be a journey… back to the eighties. Foreigner’s “Double Vision” followed, kickstarting how the band, which consisted of Paul Kochanski on keyboards, Art Mambuca on drums, Kevin Herrera on guitar, and Joe Pettengill on bass, flip-flopped between the two seminal eighties bands to create a robust, slightly nostalgic, but rocking setlist. Maroulis led these songs, singing them accurately, but also taking them to new heights as a stellar showman. He jumps off of the raised drum set and runs into the crowd, serenades fans young and old, and interacts with the audience immensely mid-song. Steve Perry and Lou Gramm were both exceptional and strong vocalists. Constantine Maroulis did their abilities and songs justice even while dancing around the venue and encouraging fans at the show to do the same.

It was during the fourth song of the first set, “Long, Long Way from Home,” that the band filled out even further with the addition of a saxophonist. Everybody now on the stage was at the absolute top of their game, killing every solo that reverberated off the high ceilings of the PAC, and stunning everyone in attendance – all while paying articulate homage to both Foreigner and Journey.

“Urgent” was the first song that got the audience wholly and fully off their feet, but Maroulis did ask them to join in with the energy that the 1981 hit of Foreigner exudes. Being in the audience, I can say that it felt as though much of us had to get back into the swing of things – and by things, I mean rocking out to live music. While the venue was strict with COVID-19 precautions such as indoor mask-wearing, there was no decrease in excitement or enjoyment. All we needed was a classic song and a little push from the lead singer. Later in the set, “Head Games” and “Jukebox Hero” also awoke something in the venue that was much needed after many months of little to no live music. Everyone was glad to be on their feet.

Foreigner’s “Waiting for a Girl Like You” was a somber, stripped, and solo spotlight moment for Maroulis. It started out evocative and endearing before building into something almost more emotional as a bigger, more actorly number. When discussing theatrics and dramatics, though, one has to look at the lead guitarist, Kevin Herrera. The long lost lovechild of Chris Cornell and Jimi Hendrix consistently had the most intense guitar solos that you could see were felt through his whole body. With his head thrown back and fingers twitching along the electric guitar’s strings, there was something almost mystical about what he could do within songs already notable, rocking, and classic. Journey’s own virtuoso, Neal Schon, should be proud.

After a brief intermission, Constantine Maroulis and Foreigners Journey returned with “Be Good to Yourself,” once again kicking a set off with a Journey staple. In between these hits, though, was a personable approach to rock and roll and cover songs. The Boston band and their Wyckoff native frontman laughed about Tinder and MySpace, joked about co-parenting, and celebrated the venue that was hosting them and that Maroulis himself exclaimed was going to be undergoing a renovation next year. This was special for the Tony-nominee, having grown up and remained a Northern New Jerseyian, as well as raising his daughter there. In fact, the youngest Maroulis was at the show – as a merchandise vendor! She and her mom, Angel Reed, were selling merchandise for the band before and after the concert, chatting with those who stopped over, asked questions, and praised the singer. Malena, his daughter, was eloquent and poised, giving the night a new sense of grounding outside of the riveting rockstar antics on stage.

A great example of that was when Foreigners Journey ripped into “Feels Like The First Time” and “I Wanna Know What Love Is.” From singing directly to a fan in the audience to jumping into an empty seat to stand above the crowd (while within the crowd), Maroulis made these two tracks a production in and of themselves. It was entertaining and lively even when he was back on the stage with the band singing such pertinent melodies. The back up vocals, and singing from the audience, enhanced these songs and much of the setlist greatly, regardless of how well the frontman stands on his own. At one point, he earnestly stated, “I want to dedicate this one to the brave men and women serving our beautiful country,” before launching into a sweet and humbling cover of “Faithfully.”

The night with Foreigners Journey and Constantine Maroulis came to a close with “Anyway You Want It” and “Don’t Stop Believing,” which came about after some playful teasing with the audience. The band joked with the crowd about what songs could possibly be next, when the biggest hits for the artists at hand had yet to be played. It wasn’t Barry Manilow’s “I Write the Songs,” nor A-ha’s “Take On Me,” as opposed to what the group joked about and harmonized on while onstage. Every song and every band member and every act and every moment was top tier, theatrical, yet personable and lighthearted. To return to music in such a way – by going back to a “sexier time” with guitar riffs and keytars and romance at the forefront of song after song – felt euphoric. Fun and authentic is the understatement of the year when it comes to describing a live show put on by Foreigners Journey.

Ian McDonald, of the Bands King Crimson and Foreigner, Dies at 75

As a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter with King Crimson, he helped propel the progressive rock movement. He found more commercial success with Foreigner.

foreigners journey wikipedia

By Jim Farber

Ian McDonald, a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter whose work with the British band King Crimson helped propel the progressive rock movement of the 1960s and ’70s, and who went on to help found the immensely popular group Foreigner, died on Feb. 9 at his home in New York City. He was 75.

The cause was colon cancer, said his son, Maxwell, who is also a musician.

Though Mr. McDonald’s work with Foreigner reaped far greater financial rewards than his efforts with King Crimson — his trio of albums with Foreigner sold a combined 17 million copies — his earlier band far outdistanced them in creativity and influence. The group’s debut album, “ In the Court of the Crimson King ” (1969), with its radical sound and structure, was a watershed work in the history of rock. It was the only release in the band’s wide catalog in which Mr. McDonald had full involvement.

He was a co-writer of every song on the album, played nine instruments and provided primary production.

“Ian brought musicality, an exceptional sense of the short and telling melodic line, and the ability to express that on a variety of instruments,” the band’s leader, Robert Fripp, wrote in the liner notes to a boxed set of King Crimson’s work released in 1997. In a recent email he said, “In 1969, I trusted Ian’s musical sense ahead of my own.”

For the title track of “In the Court of the Crimson King,” Mr. McDonald wrote the music and provided a Mellotron hook that became one of the most recognizable uses of that instrument in rock history. Highly melodic, the sound provided a striking contrast to the fury of the album’s other most famous song, “ 21st Century Schizoid Man .” Fired by the combination of Mr. McDonald’s shrieking alto saxophone and Mr. Fripp’s brutalist guitar, “21st Century Schizoid Man” both startled and thrilled listeners.

Pete Townshend of the Who was so impressed, he wrote ad copy for the album in Rolling Stone magazine that read: “Twenty-first century schizoid man is everything multi-tracked a billion times, and when you listen you get a billion times the impact. Has to be the heaviest riff that has been middle-frequencied onto that black vinyl disc since Mahler’s 8th.”

“In the Court of the Crimson King” went gold in the United States and made the Top Five in the band’s native Britain. At the end of a U.S. tour to promote the album, Mr. McDonald left the band, as did the drummer, Michael Giles.

“I was probably not emotionally mature enough to handle it, and I just made a rather rash decision to leave without consulting anyone,” Mr. McDonald told Sid Smith for the 2001 book “In the Court of King Crimson.”

In 1970, the two departed members released their own album, “McDonald and Giles,” which showcased Mr. McDonald’s vocal skills as well as his Beatle-esque sense of melody. That same year, several long songs he had helped write for King Crimson appeared on the group’s second album, “In the Wake of Poseidon.” Mr. Fripp invited him back in 1974, and he played on two tracks of the band’s “Red” album, released that year. The band broke up shortly thereafter.

When work slowed for him in England in the mid-1970s, Mr. McDonald moved to New York, where he helped form Foreigner with another British transplant, Mick Jones.

Foreigner’s debut album, called simply “Foreigner” and released in 1977, made Billboard’s Top Fiveand sold more than five million copies. One song Mr. McDonald helped write, “Long, Long Way From Home,” became a Top 20 Billboard hit. He was a co-producer of all three albums that he recorded with Foreigner; the others were “Double Vision” (1978) and “Head Games” (1979).

Ian Richard McDonald was born on June 25, 1946, in Osterley, Middlesex, England, to Keith McDonald, an architect, and Ada (May) McDonald, a homemaker. His father played banjo and piano, and, in a house filled with music, Ian played guitar and piano.

His multi-instrumental approach broadened at 15, when he left school and entered the British Army as a bandsman. “I was taught clarinet, and from there I taught myself flute and saxophone,” he told Big Bang Magazine in 1999. “I was exposed to a number of different musical styles.”

After leaving the army and moving to London, he met Mr. Fripp, who had a whimsical group called Giles, Giles and Fripp, including Michael Giles and his brother Pete. Mr. McDonald recorded songs with them before they evolved into King Crimson, with the singer and bassist Greg Lake replacing Pete Giles.

Almost immediately a buzz grew around them, leading to an invitation to perform at a free Rolling Stones free concert in Hyde Park in London; the event was originally meant to introduce the Stones’ new guitarist, Mick Taylor, but it wound up doubling as a salute to the musician he had replaced, Brian Jones, who had died two days earlier. Audience estimates for the show range from 250,000 to 500,000. In 2013, The Guardian reported that “King Crimson nearly stole the show.”

The trailer for a forthcoming documentary titled “In the Court of the Crimson King” shows Mr. McDonald apologizing to Mr. Fripp for leaving the band so soon after it began. His run with Foreigner also ended when he was fired by Mr. Jones, who, Mr. McDonald said, desired more control. (Mr. McDonald did play with the band for its 40th-anniversary tour in 2017.)

In 2002, he formed a group with other ex-members of King Crimson (without Mr. Fripp) called the 21st Century Schizoid Band, which toured and released several live albums. Mr. McDonald issued a solo album in 1999, “Driver’s Eyes,” and formed a new rock-oriented group, Honey West, which featured his son, Maxwell , on the album “Bad Old World” (2017).

In addition to his son, Mr. McDonald is survived by his sister, Linda Rice.

Throughout his life he remained proud of how King Crimson’s debut album had endured.

“One thing I tried to do as the main producer was to have every moment be able to be listened to hundreds of times so that, hopefully, the album would stand the test of time,” he told the entertainment blog The Los Angeles Beat in 2019. “Here we are 50 years later, and people are still talking about it.”

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this obituary misstated Mr. McDonald’s middle name. It was Richard, not Max.
