A tourist has died after plunging from a bridge in Barcelona during an incident believed to be linked to an attempted mugging.

The Canadian man, 25, was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after falling from the bridge on a coastal ring road near the Spanish city.

It's believed he had been targeted by a group of around five youths who tried to mug him .

Initial reports were that the man had been thrown from the bridge near the exit on the Ronda Litoral, although it's now thought he may have jumped off in an escape bid and devastatingly misjudged the 20ft drop.

The tourist, who Spanish authorities have yet to name publicly, tragically died in hospital from his injuries.

Two friends who were with him, whose nationalities have not been given, and a taxi driver who subsequently gave a statement to police, are said to have told investigators a group of five youngsters tried to mug them.

The incident that led to the unnamed tourist’s death occurred around 6am on Wednesday morning by exit 23 of the 12-mile coastal ring road.

He and his friends are said to have been confronted outside a McDonald’s restaurant near the spot where he was found unconscious, on the road by the bridge below a wall separating the ring road and the exit.

Medics stabilised him at the scene before rushing him “critically injured” to the city’s Hospital del Mar where he died several hours later.

The group of tourists are believed to have been travelled to Barcelona to do some sightseeing before watching this Sunday’s league match between Barcelona and Real Madrid in the Catalan capital.

A spokesman for the Mossos d’Esquadra regional police, who are probing the incident in the neighbourhood of Poblenou, part of the district of Santi Marti, said: “Officers from the Investigative Unit of the Santi Marti police station are investigating an incident that took place yesterday morning/on Wednesday morning in the district of Santi Marti.

“We were alerted about a fight and a person who had plunged from a bridge over the Ronda Litoral.

“The incident took place about 6am. The man was transferred to hospital in a serious condition. He died several hours later.”

He added: “Investigators are working on gathering as much evidence as possible. The possibility this could be an accidental death has not been ruled out.”

The tourist’s death follows several high-profile violent muggings in Barcelona involving foreign including British holidaymakers.

Last September a UK tourist was stabbed in the city while trying to fight off thieves who had snatched his bag.

He was overheard shouting: “Where’s my s**t, where’s my necklace, where the f**k is it” as he was filmed wrestling with one of the criminals.

Another Brit filming the drama on his mobile phone yelled to one of the assailants: “You’re on camera bro, you want to give it back mate.”

The thief managed to get away after appearing to put a blade to his victim’s face and making off with a stolen bum bag.

Three accomplices sprinted away after him following the incident, said to have started when the four men approached the Brit and snatched a necklace off him in a beautiful city centre square called Plaza Sant Josep Oriol.

The four suspects were all arrested shortly afterwards in the same area.

Last June a wealthy American had his designer watch stolen during a violent mugging outside the five-star Mercer Hotel in Barcelona.

Many of the street thefts and robberies are carried out by gangs of repeat offenders, although local press say only six out of every 100 cases involve the use of force or violence.

According to the Daily Mirror, the man was rushed to hospital with severe head injuries where he later died.

Cops allege the victim — whose name and hometown have not been revealed — was targeted by five teenagers who attempted to rob him.

Initially, it was believed the young Canadian had been thrown off the bridge. However, investigators now believe he tried to jump in an escape bid but misjudged the 20-foot drop.

Two pals were with the Canadian man and they along with a cab driver gave statements to investigators. The incident happened Wednesday morning after the group was confronted outside a nearby McDonald’s.

Paramedics managed to stabilize the critically injured man at the scene before he succumbed to his injuries.

The Mirror reports the tourists travelled to Barcelona for Sunday’s soccer match between Barcelona and Real Madrid in the Catalan capital.

British holidaymaker falls to his death in tragic accident in Catalan

barcelona tourist dies

A British holidaymaker has died after falling onto rocks in an upmarket Catalan holiday resort.

The 23-year-old died instantly after losing his balance in an accident in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Sites south of Barcelona.

Police confirmed he was a British tourist and said he was with two other people at the time.

A spokesman for the Mossos d’Esquadra regional police force said: “A 23-year-old British holidaymaker died in the early hours of Tuesday morning in an incident that is being treated at this stage as an accident.

“He appears to have fallen from a replica cannon in front of a church by the sea overlooking rocks which are there to protect the sea wall and landed on the rocks as he fell.

“He was pulled out of the water by a passer-by and one of the people he was with.

“He was pronounced dead at the scene. A routine investigation is underway but there is nothing pointing to the death being the result of a crime and it is being treated as a tragic accident at this stage.”

The tragedy happened in front of a church called Sant Bartomeu in a square known as Baluard Square.

The replica canon the unnamed Brit fell to his death replaced an original which had been there for more than 200 years.

It has been described as the only one of six weapons that were used to defend the Sitges coastline at the end of the eighteenth century.

The tragedy is the latest in a series which have resulted in the death of British holidaymakers and expats since the resumption of international travel following the easing of the Covid crisis.

A tourist has died after plunging from a bridge in Barcelona during an incident believed to be linked to an attempted mugging.

The 25-year-old Canadian lost his fight for life after being rushed to hospital with serious head injuries.

Initial local reports claimed police believed his attackers may have thrown him from the bridge during a struggle after he resisted their attempts to rob him.

But overnight it emerged he may have jumped to his death in the mistaken belief he could reach safety after a fatal miscalculation about the near-20 feet drop.

Two friends who were with him, whose nationalities have not yet been made public, and a taxi driver who subsequently gave a statement to police, are said to have told investigators a group of five youngsters tried to mug them.

Thirteen people have officially been confirmed dead and 80 more are injured after a van plowed through crowds in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas district in what authorities are treating as a a terror attack.

That van wasn’t the only potential assault on civilians in Spain’s second largest city, either. Reports indicated that one or two armed men had also barricaded themselves inside a bar in the area after the attack, which also saw pedestrians fleeing from the streets into cafes and shops in the popular corridor of the city.

What happened?

A white van reportedly careened into a major pedestrian area, swerving back and forth in what was perceived by witnesses as a deliberate attempt to hit as many pedestrians as possible. Witnesses reported that people there screamed as the van smashed through the crowd.

  • Two armed men holed up in restaurant after Barcelona attack

“I was with my boyfriend just about to cross Las Ramblas, and all of a sudden there was an immediate stampede and police shouting at people to run,” Ethan Spidey, 25, told The Independent .

“There was a stampede in the streets alongside Las Ramblas as everyone tried to run away,” he continued. “People were running into shops and taking refuge in case. There was a lot of screaming.”

A second van linked to the attack is said to have been found in the small town of Vic in Catalonia, according to local authorities.

How bad is the damage?

While 13 deaths have been confirmed, alongside 80 injuries, that death toll may rise. As many as 32 people were reported to have had serious injuries.

Barcelona Attack

Where in Barcelona did this happen?

Las ramblas is a strip that extends from the Barcelona waterfront into the city. It is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The streets are lined with stalls and shops, and tends to get pretty crowded.

Who is responsible and why?

It’s unsure at this point who is responsible for planning this attack. The explicit motive is also unclear. We do know that officials are treating this as a terrorist attack.

Police released the name and picture of a man suspected of being involved somehow, but it was not immediately clear if he was considered to be a suspect in the attack itself or if the individual had simply rented the van that was used.

Spanish television and a Catalan newspaper said that a suspect has been killed in a shoot out with police.

  • Police find second van connected to Las Ramblas terror attack
  • Man on run in Barcelona as police confirm terror attack
  • Foreign Office warns Barcelona tourists to stay inside
  • Catalan police confirm fatalities and injuries after Barcelona attack

But, we do know that using vehicles as weapons is a particularly lethal method for attacking large groups of people. Vehicles are particularly difficult to stop, and have been used in attacks across Europe, and even the United States, with deadly consequence.

Terrorists have used vehicles to kill people in France, Germany, and Britain. The attacks don’t necessarily require a lot of planning, making it difficult for authorities to see the attacks coming in time to stop them.

Is Las Ramblas particularly vulnerable?

By most accounts, there aren’t a lot of obstacles there to stop an attack using a vehicle. While there are plenty of methods for cities to try and secure pedestrian areas, it does not appear that Las Ramblas was equipped to do so.

Where on Las Ramblas did this occur and what happened to the driver?

The van entered the pedestrian zone near the Plaça de Catalunya, and didn’t stop until near Plaça Boqueria. The entire boulevard is 1.2 km long.

The driver was seen fleeing from the van after it came to a halt. It is unclear if he has been arrested, or if he remains at large.

How are officials responding?

Officials have boosted security around the city, and have positioned armed police at toll stations to check cars. Police have implemented terrorist protocols in response to the attack.

Meanwhile, hospitals are requesting blood donations to help care for those wounded during the attack.

What is the international community saying?

Soon after the attack, United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson offered American help in the wake of the events in Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan - whose city has been the recent target of terror attacks - tweeted that his "thoughts are with the victim of this barbaric terrorist attack in the great city of Barcelona and with their brave emergency serices. London stands with Barcelona against the evil of terrorism."

People gather around a single rose laid on the ground of Las Ramblas in Barcelona on Friday, observing one minute's silence for the victims of the terrorist attack.

Updated at 5:17 p.m. ET

As the chaos of the past 24 hours settles in Spain, a clearer picture of the human cost in Barcelona and Cambrils is beginning to emerge — and one thing, at least, is becoming more apparent by the hour: Spain's deadliest terror attack in more than a decade claimed lives and damaged others from just about every continent.

At least 13 people were killed and more than 100 were injured Thursday when a driver mowed down the crowds that regularly throng Barcelona's Las Ramblas boulevard, a destination popular with tourists. Among the dead is one American citizen, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson confirmed Friday without identifying the victim.

American Jared Tucker's father later said in an interview with ABC's Bay Area affiliate that he believes his son was killed in the Barcelona attack. Jared Tucker, who went missing Thursday, had been with his wife on a honeymoon they'd delayed for a year, his father said.

What We Know: Multiple Terrorist Attacks Hit Spain

"We express our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of this individual," Tillerson said, noting the State Department is still working to confirm whether more U.S. citizens were hurt or killed in the attacks.

Local law enforcement say one person was also killed in a related attack in the early hours Friday in Cambrils. Five men plowed their car through a roadblock in the coastal resort town southeast of Barcelona, hitting several pedestrians before finally flipping the vehicle and dying in a shootout with police.

In all, Catalonian authorities say the dead and injured were from at least 34 countries — from Belgium to Australia, from Taiwan to Argentina.

Here is what we know so far about the people killed in the attacks. We will continue to update this post throughout the day as more information emerges.

Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni confirmed Friday that two of his country's citizens were killed in the attacks, Bruno Gulotta and Luca Rossa.

"Even for Luca, a moment of serenity turned into death, brought on by terrorist killers who act indiscriminately," tweeted Luca Zaia , president of Rossa's native region Veneto.

According to local Italian media , the young man was an engineer who had recently graduated university. He was reportedly vacationing in Barcelona with his girlfriend, who was also hurt in the attack but avoided serious injuries.

In Russo's final public Facebook entry , he posted an adage written in chalk: "We are born without bringing anything, we die without taking away anything. And in the middle, we argue for something."

Gulotta, too, was on vacation in Barcelona with his partner and two young children, one of whom is just 7 months old, his boss told the Italian publication La Repubblica . The paper reports he had been walking on Las Ramblas with his family when he was struck by the terrorists' van.

It was only after hours of attempting to reach him that the editor of the tech company where Gulotta worked, Andrea Ferrario, connected with someone who know what happened — and learned the terrible news.

"Today is a day of mourning," Gulotta's company, Tom's Hardware, said in a statement posted to Facebook Friday. "We embrace his partner Martina and his two children."

In a separate statement , Gulotta's colleagues said the "tragedy strikes us in so many ways":

"We identify with Martina, a young mother showing strength in the face of something no one should ever have to bear. We put ourselves in the shoes of little Alessandro, who is preparing to start elementary school knowing that his life and that of his family will never be the same. And we think of little Aria, who doesn't understand what has happened but will never know his father."

Belgian authorities confirmed Friday that Elke Vanbockrijck, a mother of two young sons, was killed in the attack Thursday on Las Ramblas.

In a statement posted to Facebook , the soccer club where her two boys played, KFC Heur Tongeren, said she was "often at the club and was committed to our club."

"She was not negative. She was always positive," team President Arnould Partoens told The Associated Press over the phone, adding that the team planned to hold one minute of silence to honor her memory before every practice and game this weekend.

"We will always remember her as a happy woman, a caring mother and loving wife," the club said in its statement. "Elke will be missed."

United States

While Secretary of State Rex Tillerson did not immediately identify the American killed in the attack, Bay Area resident Dan Tucker later said that it was his son Jared who had died. Member

Jared Tucker's family "knew he was over on vacation" in Barcelona with his wife, Heidi, his father said. The ABC affiliate reports Jared and Heidi had been married a year ago; their trip to Paris and Barcelona was their long-delayed honeymoon.

As they learned of the attack, Dan Tucker said "our first concern was, 'I wonder where Jared is?' "

Hours of uncertainty followed, as the family struggled to ascertain his whereabouts. Tucker's father told the TV outlet they learned the tragic news Friday morning.

"I'm not angry so much as I don't understand it," Dan Tucker said, voice breaking. "My wife's in shock. It's a lot harder on her. ... She's just having a really hard time."

A woman who reported her uncle missing Thursday confirmed hours later that he had been killed on impact when he was struck by the van in Barcelona. Catalonian media say the man, identified as Francisco López Rodríguez, lived close to the city.

Raquel Baron Lopez said her aunt was also hospitalized after the attack.

The injured

The French victims among the injured number at least 26, according to a statement by France's foreign affairs minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, who added that at least 11 of them are seriously injured.

Meanwhile, Germany's foreign office says at least 13 German nationals were injured in the attack — "some of them seriously, so seriously that they are still fighting for their lives," says foreign ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer.

Four Australian nationals were also wounded in the attacks — two of whom with serious injuries, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop confirmed. She added that one Australian also remains unaccounted for.

A tourist choked to death on a set of car keys in a Barcelona supermarket while on holiday with his family.

The man, 37, from the Netherlands was almost thrown out by security guards for ‘causing altercations’, according to local reports.

The reason he got the keys stuck in his throat is still unknown and it appears the guards did not immediately realise he was choking.

He entered the store on Riera de Cassoles avenue in the city centre ‘in an evident state of excitement’ on Thursday, 20 Minutos reports .

Staff alerted Guàrdia Urbana police officers who restrained the man but he collapsed and lost consciousness, the channel added.

Paramedics from the Sistema d’Emergencies Mediques scrambled to the scene at around 10.15pm and tried desperately to save his life with resuscitation efforts.

Reports said they managed to make him cough out the car key and the man was rushed to Sant Pau Hospital.

He died at 2.05am on Friday.

It is unclear why security initially thought the man was causing a disturbance rather than choking.

It could have been because he was speaking Dutch or that he was unable to speak at all after getting the keys stuck in his throat.

His family has been offered support by authorities at Barcelona city council and the Dutch embassy has been informed.

Barcelona’s autonomous police force Mossos d’Esquadra is investigating.

Barcelona terrorist attack: Who are the victims?

Updated on: August 21, 2017 / 3:22 AM EDT / CBS/AP

BARCELONA -- The 16 people killed in Barcelona's popular tourist destination Las Ramblas when a van van plowed into a crowd  came from around the world.

Those killed and the dozens wounded in two separate attacks were from 34 different countries, including France, Germany, China, Australia and Peru, Spanish emergency services announced Friday.

Authorities have named at least 12 of the victims of the twin vehicle attacks.

Spanish authorities announced Sunday that a 7-year-old boy was among the victims.

Below is the information that has been made available on the victims of the terror attack thus far:

Jared Tucker, U.S.

jared-tucker-barcelona-2017-8-19.jpg

Jared Tucker , 42, and his wife were celebrating their one-year anniversary in Barcelona, his father, Dan Tucker told CBS San Francisco.

Jared had just headed to a restaurant to use the restroom, and moments later, as chaos unfolded, his wife, Heidi Nunes sought shelter in a kiosk, Dan Tucker said. When Nunes left the kiosk, she couldn't find her husband.

"It's hard for us to understand," he said. "It's the first time he has even been in Europe. He's at [Las] Ramblas at the wrong time. How could this happen? But it looks like it did."

Julian Cadman, Britain and Australia

Julian Cadman.jpg

Seven-year-old Julian Cadman , a British-Australian national, was among those killed when a van crashed into pedestrians on Las Ramblas, Spanish authorities announced Sunday.

The Australian, Philippines and British governments previously announced that the 7-year-old was missing after becoming separated from his mother, who was seriously injured in the attack.

"Julian was a much loved and adored member of our family. As he was enjoying the sights of Barcelona with his mother, Julian was sadly taken from us," his family said in a statement to Sky News.

"He was so energetic, funny and cheeky, always bringing a smile to our faces. We are so blessed to have had him in our lives and will remember his smiles and hold his memory dear to our hearts," the statement said.

Catalonian emergency services also confirmed that a British-Australian boy had died in the attack, which left at least 120 others injured.

Ian Moore Wilson, Canada

Ian Moore Wilson was confirmed dead Friday by his daughter, Vancouver PD Staff. Sgt Fiona Wilson.

Fiona Wilson said in a statement that her mother, Valerie, also needed "urgent medical attention and aftercare."

Fiona Wilson described her father as "compassionate, generous, adventurous, and always game for a lively debate, a good book, exploring new places, and a proper-sized pint."

"My dad's passing leaves an immense void in our tight-knit family. He was desperately loved by us all and will be dearly missed," Wilson's statement read.

She thanked friends and colleagues at the Vancouver Police Department for offering support, the Catalonian first responders and an Air Canada employee who offered a discount pass to make the emergency flight more affordable.

A father from Legnano in northern Italy is being praised as a hero who protected his children during an attack in Barcelona.

One of his Gulotta's work colleagues, Pino Bruno, told the Italian news agency ANSA that he saved the life of his two young children - Alessandro, 6, and Aria, 7 months - by throwing himself between them and the van that mowed people down.

Bruno said he spoke to Gulotta's wife, Martina, and she told him her husband had been holding the 6-year-old's hand on the tourist-thronged avenue in Barcelona when "the van appeared suddenly."

"Everyone knelt down, instinctively, as if to protect themselves," Bruno said, adding that Gulotta put himself in front of his children and was fatally struck.

Gulotta was a sales manager for Tom's Hardware Italia, an online publication about technology. "Rest in peace, Bruno, and protect your loved ones from up high," read one tribute on the company's web site.

"It is with great sadness that I must report that one of our team members was killed in the attack in Barcelona yesterday," Purch CEO Greg Mason announced in an email to the company.

Francisco Lopez Rodriguez, 57, and Javier Martinez, 3, Spain

Francisco Lopez Rodriguez was killed with his 3-year-old grand-nephew, Javier Martinez, while walking along the Las Ramblas promenade in Barcelona.

Lopez was accompanied by his wife Roser - who is recovering from her wounds in a hospital - her niece and the niece's two children, one of them Javier.

"He was a lovely man, kind and charitable. Everyone loved him," said 81-year-old Natalia Moreno Perez from Lopez's native town of Lanteira, some 700 inhabitants outside Granada in southern Spain.

"I knew him from when he was a kid, always telling jokes," said Natalia. "Terrible news, the town is in mourning."

Lopez emigrated from the town with his family in the 1960s to seek work. He lived in Rubi, a migrant town of 75,000 people northwest of Barcelona, and had been visiting the Catalan capital.

Leading newspaper El Pais said Lopez worked as a metal worker in Rubi and had been walking back from Barcelona port area when the van burst onto Las Ramblas.

"We are a broken family," niece Raquel Baron Lopez posted on Twitter.

Carmen Lopardo, Italy and Argentina

The Argentine Foreign Ministry said Carmen Lopardo, 80, an Italian native who had lived in Argentina for 60 years, died in Barcelona.

Lopardo was visiting Barcelona as a tourist, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Pepita Codina, Spain

Pepita Codina's death was confirmed on Twitter and Instagram by Xavier Vilamala, the mayor of Hipolit de Voldrega, the town of 3,000 people where she was from near Barcelona.

Vilamala said on Twitter he was "very sad and distressed" by the news.

Local media reported that Codina's daughter, Elisabet, was injured in the attack, but is currently out of danger at Hospital del Marin Barcelona.

Luca Russo, 25, Italy

luca-russo-barcelona-2017-8-19.jpg

One of Italy's two victims in the Barcelona van attack is being mourned as a brilliant young engineer dragged to his death before his girlfriend's eyes.

A determined Luca Russo, 25, already had a job in electronic engineering, no easy feat in Italy, where youth unemployment runs stubbornly high.

"We were investing in him, we wanted to make him grow professionally," the Italian news agency ANSA quoted Stefano Facchinello, one of the partners in the Padua area company where Russo had worked for a year, as saying.

Facchinello praised Russo Friday as a "willing, precise and punctual young man. He made an impression on us for his rationality and determination."

Rosario Rizzuto, the rector at Padua University, where Russo studied, said the young man had "earned his degree brilliantly and got down to work."

The girlfriend, Marta Scomazzon, who was hospitalized with a fractured foot and elbow, told an aunt that "we were walking together, then the van came on top of us."

Elke Vanbockrijck, Belgium

CORRECTION Belgium Spain Attacks

Arnould Partoens, president of the KFC Heur Tongeren soccer team, said Vanbockrijck was at the club "nearly every day" ferrying her 10- and 14-year-old boys back and forth to training and matches. He described her as very committed.

"She was always positive," he said in a phone interview. He said the team would hold a minute of silence before every match and training session this weekend.

Partoens said the family was on vacation in Barcelona. The boys and their father, a policeman, were unhurt, he said.

"The mother was in the wrong moment and the wrong place," he said.

In a message of condolence on its Facebook page, the club said: "We deplore the death of Elke, the mother of two players from KFC Heur Tongeren. She was often at the club, and was committed to our club. We will always remember her as a happy woman, a caring mother and loving wife. Elke will be missed. Our deepest sympathy goes out to her two sons, her husband, family and loved ones."

Silvina Alejandra Pereyra, 40, Argentina and Spain

Argentina's Foreign Ministry says Pereyra, an Argentine-Spanish dual citizen who resided in Barcelona for the last 10 years, is among those who died.

It says in a statement that her death was confirmed through family members living in Bolivia after a cousin identified her body at a morgue in Barcelona.

The Argentine government expressed its deep regret over the pain caused to Pereyra's family and friends and said its diplomatic missions in Barcelona and Madrid are working to assist.

Ana Maria Suarez, Spain

The Spanish Royal family sent condolences to Suarez's family in its Twitter account after Ana Maria died in the attack in the resort town of Cambrils.

According to local media, the woman was originally from the city of Zaragoza, and was on vacation with her family. Her husband and one of her sisters are injured in a hospital.

Police officers near the Las Ramblas area of Barcelona after a van ploughed into a crowd, killing at least 13 and injuring more than 80 on Thursday night.

Timeline of terror in Spain: how Barcelona and Cambrils attacks unfolded

Three fatal incidents believed to be linked to terrorism occur over a 24-hour period and a 190-mile stretch of north-east Spain

  • Spain attacks – latest updates

Fourteen people have been confirmed killed in two attacks in Spain on Thursday. Thirteen died when a van was driven in to crowds on Las Ramblas in Barcelona, and one person was killed by a car in Cambrils, a coastal town 75 miles (120km) to the the south. The horrific events appear to have begun the night before, in another town 120 miles south of Barcelona.

Wednesday night, Alcanar

  • An explosion at a house in the small town of Alcanar, 120 miles south of Barcelona , and the southernmost point of Catalonia, kills one person and wounds 16.
  • Police say the blast is the result of an accumulation of gas, but do not release further details. Most injuries occur after firefighters and police officers are caught by a second blast while investigating the initial explosion.
  • Senior police official Josep Lluis Trapero later says the blast was related to the van attack in Barcelona the following day, and that those in the house were attempting to “prepare an explosive device”.

Thursday, 5pm, Barcelona

  • A white Fiat van veers off the road and into a crowd outside the Plaça de Catalunya metro station.
  • The driver continues down the pedestrian boulevard of Las Ramblas, a popular tourist destination, for more than 500 metres before stopping and fleeing on foot.
  • The smashed van is left at the foot of a mosaic by artist Joan Míro.
  • The attack kills 13 people and leaves about 100 injured.

6.30pm, Vic

  • In the town of Vic, 50 miles north of Barcelona, police find a second van, presumed to be a getaway vehicle.
  • Police say the van was hired at the same time as the Fiat used in the attack.
  • The perpetrator of the Barcelona attack remains at large.

7pm, ‘terrorist protocol’

  • Catalan police confirm they are dealing with a terrorist attack. On Twitter they say they have “activated the terrorist attack protocol” for the region.

7.30pm, Sant Just Desvern

  • A man is killed when he attempts to drive through a police roadblock in the town of Sant Just Desvern, on the outskirts of Barcelona.
  • Initial reports say he died from police gunfire after running over two officers, leaving one with a broken leg. An official at the time ruled out a connection to the attack on Las Ramblas.
  • On Friday morning, the Catalan interior minister, Joaquim Forn, contradicts earlier reports, saying the man died of knife wounds not inflicted by police.
  • He says a connection to the other attacks can no longer be ruled out.

8pm, suspect arrested

  • Police confirm one suspect, Driss Oukabir , has been arrested after turning himself in.
  • The 28-year old Moroccan-born Spanish resident is identified from documents left at the scene. But Oukabir says his passport and ID were stolen, and that he played no part in the attack.
  • Oukabir is arrested in the northern Catalan town of Ripoll, 70 miles from Barcelona. He tells police he came forward after he saw his name and image being circulated in the media.
  • The El País newspaper says Oukabir, or someone with his ID, rented the Fiat van used in the attack.

9pm, Isis speaks out

  • Islamic State claims responsibility for the attack.
  • Using the group’s Amaq news agency, Isis claims the perpetrators of the attack are “soldiers of the Islamic State”, but this has not yet been verified. Claims of responsibility by Isis do not necessarily mean there is a direct connection between attackers and the terrorist group.

9.30pm, second suspect arrested

  • A second unnamed suspect is confirmed as arrested, according to Catalonia’s regional president, Carles Puigdemont.
  • The police official Josep Lluis Trapero says the second man was born in the Spanish territory of Melilla in northern Morocco, and was arrested in Alcanar, the site of Wednesday’s house explosion.

Friday, 1am, Cambrils

  • Police kill four alleged terrorists, and injure one, after they carry out a second attack in the coastal town of Cambrils.
  • Police say the attackers drove an Audi A3 car into pedestrians, injuring six civilians and one police officer.
  • The Associated Press reports that police said that attackers were wearing what appeared to be explosive belts.

4am, injury toll

  • The injured suspect in Cambrils dies, bringing the number of dead suspects to five.
  • Police say one of the injured civilians is in a critical condition and is in hospital.
  • Catalan interior minister Joaquim Forn contradicts earlier reports about the roadblock in Sant Just Desvern. He says the man, who was the owner of the car, was not driving and was in the passenger seat. He was not killed by police but rather, was stabbed to death.
  • Forn said a connection to the other attacks was a possibility, and that a hunt was under way to find the person who drove the car to the roadblock.

8.30am, third arrest

  • Catalonian police say they have arrested a third suspect in connection with the attacks, in Ripoll, where Driss Oukabir had been arrested on Thursday.
We have arrested a third person in Ripoll related to the attacks #Cambrils #Barcelona — Mossos (@mossos) August 18, 2017

9.45am, suspected van driver identified

  • Spanish police identify 18-year-old Moussa Oukabir as the suspected driver of the van used in Las Ramblas attack, according to reports in Spanish media.
  • Oukabir is understood to be the younger brother of Driss Oukabir, the man arrested in Ripoll on Thursday. Driss Oukabir is reported to have told police that his identity documents were stolen before they were used to rent the van.

11.30am Overall death toll rises to 14

  • Police say a Spanish woman has died of injuries sustained in the Cambrils attack, taking the overall toll to 14.

12.40pm, fourth arrest

  • Spanish media report that a fourth person has been arrested in connection with the attacks.

Friday afternoon, suspects sought

  • Late on Friday afternoon it is reported that the police are hunting for four suspects named as Moussa Oukabir, Mohamed Hychami, Younes Abouyaaqoub, and Said Aallaa, all from the Catalonian town of Ripoll.

Friday night, five killed in Cambrils named by police

  • Catalan police confirm that the five shot dead in Cambrils included Moussa Oukabir, 17, (who has elsewhere been reported to be 18), who had initially been sought as the driver in the Ramblas attack. El Houssaine Abouyaaqoub, 19, and Said Aallaa, 19, were also killed. All three were Moroccan. The other two killed, Omar Hychami, 21, and Mohamed Hychami, 24, were listed as born in Morocco.
  • Police are still hunting Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, who they now suspect may have been the van driver in Barcelona , along with two other unnamed suspects who are still on the run. In total, 12 people are suspected of involvement in the wave of attacks 0-five were killed in Cambrils and a further four have been arrested.

Former Wales and Lions prop O'Shea dies aged 83

Prop John O'Shea played five Tests for Wales and won one cap for the British and Irish Lions

Prop John O'Shea played five Tests for Wales and won one cap for the British and Irish Lions

  • Published 24 April 2024

Former Wales and British and Irish Lions prop John O'Shea has died in Australia at the age of 83 after a lengthy illness.

Capped five times from 1967-1968, O'Shea made his international debut for his country against Scotland at Murrayfield in February 1967.

O'Shea was selected for the 1968 Lions tour to South Africa, where he became the first Lion to be sent off for foul play in a game after punching an Eastern Transvaal player.

He always claimed he had been retaliating after the opponent had targeted Lions scrum-half Roger Young, while there was an infamous melee as he walked off the pitch after a spectator then struck the departing prop.

History of the Lions: The 1960s

During that tour, on which O'Shea played eight games including the first Test, he also became the first Lions prop to score two tries in a game when he crossed twice against Rhodesia.

O'Shea played his club rugby for Cardiff between 1963-1970, making 213 appearances and scoring 19 tries. He was the club captain in the 1969-1970 season.

The club paid tribute to their former player, saying: "A great character, John was a very popular and respected member of the club where he made many life-long friends, and he will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him."

Tuesday Briefing

The opening of Donald Trump’s Manhattan trial.

Daniel E. Slotnik

By Daniel E. Slotnik

Donald Trump, flanked by officers, walks out of a courthouse.

Opening statements in Trump’s Manhattan trial

The first criminal trial of a former U.S. president began yesterday , with lawyers from each side presenting divergent visions of Donald Trump in their opening statements.

Prosecutors delivered a raw recounting of Trump’s seamy past, portraying him as a co-conspirator in a plot to cover up three sex scandals that threatened his 2016 election win and claiming that Trump lied “over and over and over” again to protect his candidacy.

Trump’s lawyers called the case a “business records violation” that wasn’t, arguing that the 34 felony counts Trump faces amounted to “just 34 pieces of paper.” They sought to undermine the credibility of the prosecution’s key witnesses, like Michael Cohen, Trump’s former fixer.

The day also included brief testimony from David Pecker , who ran The National Enquirer and whom prosecutors say bought and buried stories that could have imperiled Trump’s 2016 campaign. The proceedings ended early to accommodate the Passover holiday and a juror’s emergency dental appointment.

Here are five takeaways .

An Israeli intelligence leader resigned

Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva, Israel’s director of military intelligence, resigned over the intelligence failures that preceded the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on Oct. 7. He is the most senior official to offer to step down after the assault.

General Haliva had become a symbol of the Israeli establishment’s failure to prevent the deadliest attack in the country’s history. His resignation was expected to heighten pressure on other senior figures, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to take greater responsibility for their roles in the catastrophe.

More Israel news:

Investigation: Israel offered no evidence to support its claims that many U.N. workers were part of terrorist organizations, an independent review found.

Retaliation: Israeli officials said that Israel abandoned plans for a much more extensive strike on Iran after diplomatic pressure from allies.

Objectives: Israel has failed to achieve its two primary goals of the war, while the suffering of Palestinians has eroded support even among its allies.

U.K. approved Rwanda deportation bill

Britain’s Conservative government finally won passage of its Rwanda deportation bill , enshrining a law that human-rights campaigners say is inhumane, immigration experts say is unworkable and legal critics say has corroded the country’s reputation for rule of law.

The legislation is designed to allow the government to put some asylum seekers on one-way flights to Rwanda, where they would have their claims processed. If they were then granted refugee status, they would be resettled in Rwanda, not Britain. But any deportation attempts are likely to encounter further legal challenges, making it unlikely that large numbers of asylum seekers will ever be sent to Rwanda.

A rotating cast of New York Times climate reporters is answering readers’ climate questions . The first topic: the impact of online shopping.

The truth is less straightforward than you might think. Despite waste from excess packaging and possible emissions from deliveries, online shopping can sometimes be a good ecological choice . Buying in bulk and bundling orders can make deliveries more efficient.

But if you’re really concerned, there’s one foolproof thing you can do for the planet, and for your bank account: Buy less stuff.

Where to fly on a budget this summer

Airfare experts share their forecasts for summer vacation destinations that won’t break your budget.

barcelona tourist dies

This summer is shaping up to be another scorcher , and the demand for summer travel is piping hot, too. If early 2024 trends are any indication of what’s to come, “it’s looking to be busier than 2023,” said Katy Nastro, spokesperson for the flight booking site Going . Recent airport passenger volume numbers have regularly exceeded last year and pre-pandemic levels.

Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com , says airline capacity has rebounded from pandemic complications, but strong travel demand means summer flight prices can be high, depending on when you’re hoping to go. Flying in June, July or early August will be more expensive than later in the season, according to the company’s summer forecast .

“And it’s not just the airfare,” Klee said in an email. “Expensive hotel rates and crowds everywhere make Western Europe tricky for the summer.”

Despite the price tag, “people are going to go,” said Melanie Fish, the head of global public relations for all Expedia Brands, including Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com . “When we look at searches for destinations, they are definitely up year over year.”

For popular destinations like Europe , Klee and Fish say to push trips later into August, September or even October. Not only will prices soften, but you’ll alleviate some of the strain of overtourism .

“My number one tip is go ahead and take that summer vacation, but maybe hold on to take that big, big trip in September,” Fish said.

According to Expedia’s summer 2024 travel outlook , we’re currently in the sweet spot for shopping for early summer flights at the best rates, as Fish says lower fares tend to pop up 21 to 60 days out. It doesn’t hurt to start your search even earlier, setting up price alerts to flag when airfare drops. If you can swing it, look to fly on a Monday for international trips or a Tuesday for domestic trips to save up to 15 percent on fares, Fish added.

It’s not impossible to find good deals on airfare, whether you’re looking for a tropical beach trip , a mountain adventure or a vibrant city. Here are places that are trending cheaper — and the destinations you’ll want to avoid.

Go to Mexico

Sun, surf, culture, chilaquiles — Mexico is always a good idea , but particularly so this summer. With the opening of the new airport in Tulum , U.S. airlines have been adding gobs of new flights to Mexico, particularly to beach regions. “We’ve seen a healthy amount of deals down to Mexico resort areas like Cancún,” Nastro said.

Laura Lindsay, global travel trends expert at Skyscanner , says three Mexican cities — Cancún, San José del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta — are among the top 10 destinations offering travelers the best bang for their buck in 2024.

To escape the summer heat, Phyllis Stoller, president of the Women’s Travel Group , recommends high-altitude destinations like Mexico City or Ixtapan de la Sal, a town near Mexico City with thermal springs.

Avoid European port cities

If you’re considering a visit to a popular European city that’s also a cruise hub, beware. Not only will you be battling the usual summer crowds, you’ll be joined by thousands of day-trippers flooding into the ports — meaning Barcelona, Venice , Athens and Santorini.

Sandra Weinacht, who co-owns the tour company Inside Europe Travel Experiences , says you can avoid some of the madness in these hot spots by staying in neighborhoods away from the typical tourist zones. You can also visit top sites in the late afternoon or evening, after cruise travelers have returned to their ships.

Better yet, wait to visit until the shoulder season

Go to Colorado

Epic hiking, breathtaking nature and more craft beer than you could ever try in a lifetime: The Centennial State is a domestic gem. Ashlee Collins of Inspirato , a luxury travel and lifestyle subscription service, says Vail is popular among members this summer. Not only is the ski resort beautiful sans snow, it’s drivable for many, cutting a significant cost for travelers.

Airfare to Colorado is looking more reasonable than other domestic vacation hubs. Nastro recently spotted a Miami-to-Denver, round-trip fare over the July Fourth holiday for just $199. She says an average round trip from major U.S. cities is running between $173 and $250, but those prices are expected to climb upward of $350 the closer we get to summer.

Avoid places at risk for wildfires

Wildfires have become an unfortunate fixture of summers in the Northern Hemisphere. Last year’s fires in Europe — including those in Cyprus and Greece — were among the worst so far this century, the European Commission reported .

Stoller says fire risk has been a factor in her summer travel planning; she nixed a New England cruise after remembering how bad smoke was last year because of the fires in Canada . “None of us can predict everything, but that would be something I would be aware of,” she said.

Extreme heat is also an issue. Last July, Southern Europe experienced excessively high temperatures from a “heat dome.”

“There’s a concern about heat,” Stoller said. “Last summer was really painful.”

Go to the Caribbean

The Caribbean has its peak tourist season during the winter, when Americans flock to warmer waters. That means summer trips to the region tend to be quieter and cheaper.

“You can go under $300 to pretty much all of the islands: Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Aruba, Dominican Republic,” said Lindsay Schwimer, a consumer travel expert at Hopper . She’s seen similar price point flights to Colombia.

Lindsay of Skyscanner also said Puerto Rico and the Bahamas offer some of the most affordable flights from the United States this summer.

Avoid Paris

Unless you’re going for the Olympics , skip the French capital this summer.

“Paris is always a top destination in the summer, but this summer … it’s going to be on another level,” said Madison Pietrowski, head of U.S. brand at GetYourGuide .

Not only are hotel prices high, “we’re seeing that some of the top attractions like the Louvre have raised their ticket prices,” Pietrowski said.

Nastro says the crowds are going to be “bananas” during the Games, and not just in Paris. Olympic travelers are likely to add on other French destinations to their trip, like Nice — which will host soccer games — or the Côte d’Azur, which already gets popular in the summertime.

Even if you try to get ahead of the rush by visiting before the July 26 start date, you may still have some Olympics-related headaches in the French capital. As the city races to finish prep, “you might find that there’s going to be eyesores and scaffolding and loud noises early in the morning,” Nastro said.

Go to rural Europe

Interest in Western Europe has not slowed down, and Americans are expected to surge back en masse this summer. If you’d like to avoid them, put rural European destinations on your radar.

Weinacht is bullish on Spain’s Rioja region , the Basque countryside and the central Italian region of Umbria, which borders Tuscany but does not see the same levels of tourism. She’s also a fan of Carinthia, the least-populated state of Austria. “It is castle- and lake-dotted, doesn’t get too hot, and oh, the food and stories the cities and villages can tell,” Weinacht said in an email.

Weinacht says she’s been getting more requests from Americans for trips to her homeland, Germany. The country is easy to navigate with its high-speed trains, and offers a mix of small and big cities spread across powerhouse wine regions, UNESCO World Heritage sites and many food festivals . According to Skyscanner, airlines in the United States have been increasing their flights to Germany — namely, Frankfurt, an international business hub — meaning you may be able to find more deals.

Avoid Sicily and Amalfi

If your dream Italian destination has been featured on TV lately, that’s a red flag. The last season of “The White Lotus” spurred an interest in already popular Sicily ; the same is happening to the Amalfi Coast thanks to the new Netflix miniseries “Ripley.”

“They’re really going to be the most expensive and they’re going to be pretty crowded for the summer,” Schwimer said.
