Making pottery - Source: Internet

One of the best things to do here is pottery making by yourself: trying to be a real potter, experiencing playing with clay and learning some unique techniques from experienced artists, and taking home as a self-made souvenir from Vietnam .

This short class costs about 50,000 VND/person ($2.15).

There is a 6000m2 market in the center of the pottery village that is separated into different areas. Each stall sells a variety of pottery and porcelain products such as plates, statues, vases, teacups, bracelets, and keychains,... Apart from household ceramics, you can find lots of unique worship items, decorative ceramic and fine pottery arts.

Bat Trang Pottery Village features the tranquility and simplicity of a common northern Vietnamese village . Narrow winding paths, a few antique houses from the previous century, and unique ceramic drying racks,... making the ancient & peaceful beauty of the village.

Located on land rich in clay, the village has the advantage of raw materials to create sophisticated ceramics. Moreover, lying on the banks of the Red river, between Thang Long and Pho Hien, two ancient trade centers in northern Vietnam during 15th-17th century, Bat Trang’s ceramics were favorite products not only in domestic market, but also foreign ones thanks to Japanese, Chinese and Western trading boats that passed by.

That explains why Bat Trang pottery village went through a difficult time. According to several studies and trusted documents, Bat Trang Ceramic Village was established in the 14 th century but the villagers said that it perhaps appeared earlier. In a story told that in 1010, when King Ly Cong Uan relocated the capital to Thang Long, many businessmen and artisans came to settle down in this area to work and trade. Also under Ly dynasty, in 1100, when the nation was in its independence and initial growth period, there were 3 scholars, who came back from their mission trip to China, bringing some learned pottery making techniques there back to Vietnam and teaching the people of Bat Trang. Taking the advantages of resources of white clay, many potters came and built the pottery kilns here. As the time went by, Bat Trang ceramic products have been developed and become well-known for the best quality, style and glaze.

With a great location by Red River, between Thang Long and Pho Hien, two busy trading ports in North Vietnam at that time, ceramic products of Bat Trang Village were exported to many countries all over the world by water ways thanks to Japan, Chinese and Western trading boats that passed by.

However, in the 18 th and 19 th centuries, Trinh – Nguyen Dynasty applied some restricting foreign trade policies which reduced trade relations between Vietnam and many other countries. As a result, the ceramic products were no longer exported to the world market. Only since 1896, thanks to the economic reform and development, Bat Trang Ceramic Village has had a huge change in toward market economy and has been widely known through its impressive high quality exported ceramic products. Nowadays, Bat Trang ceramic products are becoming more and more abundant and diverse. Besides traditional products, it also produces many new products to meet domestic demand such as kettles, dishes, flowerpot… as well as exporting orders.

Hanni was full of facts and information and easily answered any questions I had. We made a couple of stops (Weaving and Rice wine) which were fantastic. We had traveled with Asia Eyes in the past and knew we could depend upon them for a unique and exceptional trip. I personally booked our airfare for the trip, everything else fro A to Z was handled by Asia Eyes and they did a fantastic job. We were picked up at the airport and driven to our hotel. Every day we had excursions we were picked up and driven around by a very knowledgeable tour guide. We were always privately driven by an English speaking tour guide, not in a tour group and consequently had time to ask questions and have things explained properly. We stayed at nothing but 4 and 5 star hotels with breakfast included at each stay. We were set up on a beautiful boat the MonCheri for the Halong Bay portion of our trip and it was definitely first class. Asia Eyes also set up a Scooter Tour in Hanoi which was quite safe and very interesting. Another great tour was in Ninh Binh south of Hanoi. Known as the HaLong Bay on land, we had our own private boat/canoe which took us through caves and streams. In Hue we visited the My Son Sanctuary which is a World Heritage site a beautiful experience. The Saigon portion of the trip had a Mekong Delta tour. As I mentioned all tours were private and included lunch. When we arrived in Phnom Penh as usual were picked up at the airport and transported to our Hotel. The following day we went out to the "Killing Fields of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. My Wife and I have traveled many places, but I can honestly say this is one of the best trips we have been on thanks to AsiaEyes Travel and Mr.Thuc Nguyen and his experienced staff ! I hope you havent't forgot us.  If you have I have included a photo of us in attach file.I promised to e-mail you when we get back.  Sorry for the delay but we had so much shit to sort out when we've got back home.

Thanks very much for giving us a tour of Hanoi.  Without you two, we would of missed a hell of a lot of Hanoi which we never had the time to explore.

When we were in the south, we came across a lot of English and Irish backpackers that were heading to Hanoi and we've recomended you and the taxi driver Binh to them.  I hope they contact you two when they get to Hanoi and give you business.

So so much had changed since I left Vietnam.  Some changes are positive and a lot of negatives but people link yourself and Binh will keep up the traditions.

I hope that you will get this e-mail.  If you do please reply.

Since we've came home, I've had so many ideas about starting a business venture in Vietnam and and hoping that you might want to be  be part of the it.

Dear Ban,

Sorry for being late.

I tried to write you a letter several times, but I couldn't finish the letter. I don't know why.

I am still in winter vacation, so I have been very lazy, frankly speaking. And I miss you and the other good people I met in Vietnam. You cannot imagine how much it is!! As for our meeting, let's put it aside for my next trip, possibly that would be the coming August. At that time, we can have time to talk a lot about Vietnamese school system and other interesting things. Don't you think??

And I am so happy to know that you think my voice is tender  in different songs... *^^*

By the way, how's it going with your new business? Is it going well? I'm sure you will be successful because you are quite ambitious and intelligent. You agree, Ban?? ^^

When my school starts, I cannot tell anything about Vietnam without talking about you to my students... I get impressed a lot, surely yu know that. Right?

I will attach the picture you took together in my next mail because my camera battery is out. Sorry about that!!

It's Saturday today. I wonder what you are doing at this moment in Vietnam when I am writing to you. Keep in touch often. OK?? ^^

Take care and be well & happy

Your friend,

Hwayoung Lee from Korea

Hello Mr Ban, What a surprise to hear from you and a good one. yes I do remember you quite well....as Black Dan? Is this right?  It has been 5 years since I was in your country. a long time, but I remember how bright and funny you were and also how polite!!! So, have you a family to look after now? A wife and some beautiful children?  I hope all is well with you and you have plenty of work to do. I am taking a break at my work as it is Christmas time here and everything stops and family get together. I know you have TET around the corner and I wish you much success and good fortune for the next year. Which animal will it be next year for TET, I wonder? And which year you born in?  I am still working with flowers. Iam known as a florist and my job keeps me pretty busy. I enjoy it very much as I love to make beautiful things from flowers and stones, dried things from Mother Nature and sometimes with man made stuff as well. It is quite funny that you emailed me at this time as I have been thinking of coming over to Vietnam alot lately and may do next year sometime. I missed out on a few places I would love to go ( Hoi Ann), and re visit some places I have been to last time. Are you still a guide? All the best.
