I went on the Everest Base Camp trek close to the monsoon season and still got to see amazing views of the Himalayas despite the clouds and occasional rain. Reaching the base of Mt. Everest exactly on my birthday was such an inspiring and incredible experience.

We are so glad that we booked Nagarkot sunrise and day hiking trip. Everything was exactly as promised and we couldn‘t have asked for a better guide. We were picked up at our hotel and driven to Nargakot to see the beautiful sunrise, had some breakfast at the Paradise Villa and started on the trek through tiny villages to the Hindu Tempel of Changu Narayan. There was always a car nearby had we wished to shorten our trek. Thank you to our wonderful guide Bidur who couldn‘t have been friendlier and looked after us very well.

Happy customer, everest base camp trek.

Great trekking and peak climbing! My guide Lakpa and tour manager K.P did a lot for making my Island Peak climbing successful. Although there were numerous challenges, my guide helped me to overcome them. I enjoyed the views of the mountains, glaciers, Himalayan flora, and fauna well. Highly recommended!!!!

Martha, USA

Best expedition with outward adventure.

This year, I climbed Mt. Everest for the second time with Outward Adventure. My guide K.P Sherpa helped me alot in every possible way. It is always challenging to walk but my Sherpa cooperated with me well and I made my journey successful. I will be back to Nepal again to climb another mountain and will use the same company for that as well.

I request all my friends to use this company for any kind of tourism related activities in Nepal.

Stephen Wilde, Vietnam

We did a 3 week trekking/climbing trip with Outward Adventure Treks. From the first to last second I felt very well taken care of. The organization by Krishna (hotel, transportation and sightseeing tour) was outstanding and Kipa is a very experienced mountain guide with a great attitude and a big smile. I always felt safe with him and immediately knew I could trust his judgement of weather, conditions etc. He is well connected in the Khumbu region which makes every special request seem no problem. Thank you for this awesome trip! I will definitely come back!

150-Day Trek Anyone? World Expeditions Caters To Seasoned Adventurers

T he travel industry’s approach to global expeditions has evolved since World Expeditions began nearly 50 years ago. To stick around that long, the company has stayed at the forefront of travel organizers with its curation of epic adventures for mountaineers and explorers.

Look around for expedition travel packages and you’ll notice many of the same destinations pop up. Conversely, Word Expeditions prides itself on its lesser-known treks in more remote locales and its ability to conduct them sustainably.

The company offers a variety of trips that include cycling, polar cruises, and even wildlife safaris. However, here we’ll focus on the company’s bigger treks and mountaineering expeditions.

These more physically demanding journeys require mountaineering experience and can take 30 days to complete – or 150 days if you’re up for its grandest adventure.

Treks and Expeditions

Since its first expedition-style trip to the Himalayas nearly 50 years ago, World Expeditions has kept mountain adventures at its core. It now offers a months-long trip across the Great Himalaya Trail, which we cover in more detail below.

The adventure company’s biggest treks include iconic ascents like Aconcagua and Mont Blanc, while others take you to less-traveled peaks like the Mountains of the Moon in Uganda. Want to spend 16 days tackling climbing trips in Bolivia ? There’s a package for that, too.

Some trips are mostly trekking with limited mountaineering, which makes them a great opportunity to gain more experience and confidence with those skills. If you need to brush up on or learn new mountain skills , they have weeklong courses with certified instructors and small class sizes.

Of course, premier destinations are only part of the equation when booking a holiday adventure. It’s important to know the philosophy of your expedition guides.

Holistic Adventure Philosophy

World Expeditions operates with the philosophy that ‘active outdoor’ travel, regardless of grading level, is a more authentic way to experience a destination.

The company wants guests to feel challenged, regardless of their age and experience, and “experience the joy of personal transformation through travel” as its core values state.

Through outdoor treks, guests can connect with themselves and others achieving physical goals while also taking in the beauty and the diverse cultures around the world.

World Expeditions also believes that local guides can offer the best experiences. Thus, they invest in training and developing local leaders . These leaders may work with Western guides to provide both well-run explorations and authentic cultural exchange.

Trip itineraries also emphasize small groups for a more personalized experience as well as to reduce the impact on the environments and communities you travel through.

An Ethical Approach

Over the years, World Expeditions has adapted its business practices to reduce the impact of its guests and work harmoniously with surrounding communities.

Part of its sustainable approach means protecting the environment alongside its travel routes. These treks and expeditions aim to reduce waste and eliminate single-use plastics, appreciate wildlife from a distance, and even offer carbon offsetting for guests.

And yet the impact on local communities is another factor in the company’s take on sustainability. Sometimes it means assisting with fundraising for local campaigns and raising awareness of its cultures.

One such example is the regenerative project underway in Purros, a village in northwestern Namibia that’s been stricken by drought. There, food scarcity is a very real challenge, especially among school children who often eat just one meal a day – a bowl of maize.

The village’s remote location makes transportation to acquire other foods cost-prohibitive, so the foundation seeks to build a closed tunnel garden overseen by a manager but attended to by the children as well. The variety of vegetables could improve nutrition as well as bring in income by selling excess vegetables to tourism venues.

Standout Trips

We’ve told you that World Expeditions prides itself on unique, remote explorations and treks. Now let’s dive into prime examples of its immersive, adventure travel packages.

The Holy Grail of Trekking

Imagine: You’ve just arrived at base camp and are slowly acclimating to the altitude. You’ve never felt more alive. These are the moments that the guides (and clients) at World Expeditions live for.

That’s but a taste of what you can expect on World Expeditions’ crown jewel itinerary: the exclusive Nepal traverse of the Great Himalaya Trail . The trail spans 1,000 miles (1,700km) and takes 150 days to finish.

The company first offered this trip in 2011, but the list of those who have completed it in one trip is small. It’s a big time commitment, yet offers so much more than checking off another mountain peak.

The full traverse starts in the far east, looking up at the world’s third highest peak, and climbs to the high plateaus on the Tibetan borderlands in the far west. The trail includes some of the most remote mountain terrain (and wildlife) on earth. Along the way, trekkers can see all eight of Nepal’s highest peaks (8000 meters+) and pass by centuries-old villages steeped in unique cultures.

The full traverse can be completed as a whole but the company also broke this down into seven different segments available as separate treks. Each segment offers the experience of big Himalayan vistas, big mountain passes, and remote valleys with rarely-visited villages.

In other words, each offers a mix of physical challenges that can develop a deep sense of personal achievement and camaraderie among guests with unique cultural exchanges.

Alpine Uganda

Conversely, picture ascending out of a lush jungle to an exposed, barren alpine in the heart of Africa. That’s the gist of World Expeditions’ trek through the Rwenzori Mountains, or Mountains of the Moon — one of the shorter and more accessible expeditions.

Your trip starts and ends with hotel stays, with 10 days spent trekking through the contrasting landscapes of tropical rainforests, Giant Lobelia forests, and expansive glaciers. Once underway, guests will spend their nights in fully supported, permanent camps with meals provided and accompanied by local guides.

Much of the trek goes through Rwenzori Mountain National Park, home to diverse flora, endangered species, and a source of the River Nile. The park is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The approach through valleys with flora like giant heather and bright ferns may fool you into forgetting the trip’s big ascent on Margherita Peak (5,109 meters), Africa’s third-highest mountain. To summit requires roping up and crampons, but it’s described as more of a hard scramble than a true climb.

Additionally, this equatorial destination is open to adventure nearly year-round. If you’re looking for a challenging and enriching experience outdoors in the winter months, this could make for an unforgettable “winter break” trip.

Uniquely Epic

The combination of grand, unique destinations and World Expeditions’ implementation of its core values through “ thoughtful travel ” set it apart from other adventure tourism companies.

Whether you’re looking for a way to combine outdoor activities with tourism or checking off one of the Seven Summits, World Expeditions has trips that promise to challenge you physically and mentally enrich your life.

Leadership Summit

  • Dates & Prices

Destination

Oregon, washington, current grades, 11th , 12th , 12+, meeting place, arrive seattle, wa (sea) depart portland, or (pdx).

After developing a love of outdoor adventure through previous expeditions, many students decide to strengthen their outdoor, interpersonal, and leadership skills through our capstone Leadership Summit course. Students will gain mastery in outdoor skills like backpacking and mountaineering and take a wilderness medicine certification course. Participants will begin the evolution from student to leader, laying the foundation for planning and executing future outdoor trips or working in the outdoor industry. We limit enrollment so students can dive deeper to improve outdoor leadership, group facilitation, wilderness ethics, environmental education, and team-building initiatives. Leadership Summit graduates also have the opportunity to apply to Adventure Treks’ internship program.

Overview Image

Year after year, backpacking is the  most highly rated activity  at Adventure Treks for many reasons, including shared challenge, lack of electronic distractions, and what we call “shared humanity.” There’s magic in overcoming obstacles, and it’s even more powerful when challenges are shared with friends. Without electronics, people able to focus on what’s in front of them, and what’s important: themselves, their friends, and creating long-lasting memories. Students are able to step into different leadership roles, and backpacking highlights commonalities and interests that form strong, unbreakable friendship bonds. Backpacking offers opportunities for both type I fun (seeing beautiful views, having deep trail conversations, jumping into swimming holes) and type II fun (steep inclines, inclement weather, forgetting something and having to problem-solve)—both of which create rewarding, meaningful experiences.

Students will hike through North Cascades National Park and Olympic National Park on extended backpacking trips, honing such skills as:

  • Expedition management and safety
  • Orienteering, map-reading, and navigation skills
  • Leave No Trace principles
  • Camp set-up and take-down
  • Building temporary shelters
  • Fire-building
  • Backcountry cooking

Not only is it important for outdoor enthusiasts to have a basic understanding of wilderness medicine, but the wilderness first responder course is also the standard minimum medical certification for outdoor leaders like guides, search and rescue professionals, and educators. (Adventure Treks alumni often go on to become instructor interns after having gained this certification.) It’s also an extremely beneficial course for anyone who takes extended backcountry trips and wants to pursue emergency medical training. Students will cover topics like:

  • Patient assessment systems
  • Risk management
  • Vital signs
  • Anaphylaxis, allergies, and airway management
  • Heat- and cold-related injuries
  • Spinal and traumatic brain injuries
  • Wounds and soft tissue injuries
  • Trauma and shock
  • Burns and blisters
  • Bites, stings, and wildlife safety
  • Splinting and patient packaging
  • Dislocations
  • And much more

On Leadership Summit, students will have the opportunity to earn up to 8 academic credit hours  through Western Carolina University.

Parks and Recreation Management (PRM) course 254, “Introduction to Outdoor Pursuits” (4 credit hours):

This is an expedition-style course in a wilderness environment. Expedition skills are taught experientially to enable students to lead others safely using minimum impact techniques that preserve the environment. Modes of travel include backpacking, mountaineering, and rafting. Students will receive the wilderness first responder medical certification. This course is designed to give students the confidence and proficiency in understanding how to lead their peers in any environment, as well as giving them the skills necessary to work in an entry-level job in the outdoor industry. Students will be encouraged to develop their teaching and leadership style and personal philosophy about backcountry ethics.

PRM course 357, “Wilderness First Responder” (4 credit hours)

This course trains participants to respond to emergencies in remote settings. The 80-hour curriculum led by SOLO Schools includes standards for urban and extended care situations. Special topics include but are not limited to wound management and infection, realigning fractures and reducing dislocations, improvising splinting techniques, monitoring patients, and long-term management problems. Adult/child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with automated external defibrillation (AED) is included in this course.

The Pacific Northwest is known for its ancient volcanic peaks that lend themselves to beautiful mountaineering opportunities in the summer. On Mt. Adams, we’ll learn how to use ice axes and crampons on snow school before attempting to summit the 12,281-foot peak. Then we’ll take that knowledge and apply it toward Mt. Olympus, where you’ll begin your backpack in a lush, vibrant rainforest before making the dramatic transition to crossing the Blue Glacier on a rope team.

Skills covered in the syllabus include:

  • Proper use of crampons and ice axes
  • Glissading and self-arrest techniques
  • Traveling on a rope team
  • Weather considerations and planning for summit attempts
  • Leave No Trace ethics for alpine terrain, snowfields, and glaciers

The New York Times has rated the White Salmon River as #13 among 46 places to visit worldwide. This Wild and Scenic River is federally protected, leaving the water and forestry in pristine condition. Teamwork is required as you bounce down fun, sustained rapids; laughter is recommended.

Because of this trip’s backcountry challenges and student-led philosophy, it is highly recommended that new students / those who haven’t previously completed an Adventure Treks trip have previous backcountry experience (e.g., multi-day backpacking trips); please give us a call at 828-698-0399 to inquire about a director conversation and mutually good fit.

Included in tuition:

  • Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, backpack, and all group gear
  • Guided activities
  • Wilderness first responder course

Not included in tuition:

  • Airfare to Seattle (SEA) and from Portland (PDX)
  • Program, travel, and medical insurance
  • Personal clothing and items
  • Tuition and application cost of Western Carolina University academic credit

A little over half of our nights are spent at “frontcountry” campsites, where we’ll generally have a more developed campsite with running water, toilets, and sometimes cell phone service. This may be a public or private campground. We often stay at the same frontcountry site a few days in a row.

The other half will be spent “backcountry” camping, referring to wilderness locations where we are most likely out of cell phone service and away from our vehicles, electricity, and other amenities. Multi-day activities like backpacking and sea kayaking take place in the backcountry.

Challenge/fitness level

Fitness and physical challenge are subjective, so Adventure Treks does not “rate” its trips based on challenge. However, as noted above, Leadership Summit is one of our most challenging trips. Because we’ll be highly engaged in backcountry activities throughout trip, our students have the responsibility to be physically fit. We know physical fitness looks different for everyone, but it’s important to come prepared so that you and your fellow students can succeed. One student not coming prepared with physical fitness will negatively impact the entire group. In the months leading up to their trip, students should develop a routine that emphasizes stamina and sustaining a moderate level of exertion for many hours, several days in a row. Running, swimming, bicycling, aerobics classes, and team sports are all beneficial and will help improve cardiovascular fitness in preparation for a student’s trip.

Hope has thrived off the experiences that she has enjoyed with Adventure Treks. Each year after her trip, I have seen an even more confident, assured, determined young woman. She is strong and true to herself. If your child embraces the experience and participates, contributes, listens, and applies, your child will thrive in so many more ways than just having a blast in the backcountry. You will see your child develop into a confident, strong individual back home. Hope has always been a stellar and exceptionally motivated child, always wanting to excel and to do better than better. But every time she returns from Adventure Treks, I see a more grown-up individual.

Each year the communication process has excelled. This year particularly has been a year of great improvement in all facets of the trip process (the enrollment process with the application info downloading and the online waivers). Stacey and Amanda are irreplaceable in my opinion. They are efficient, effective, responsive, knowledgeable, courteous, patient, kind, caring, exceptional employees who are the ties to our children.

Michele Bowe, Chevy Chase, MD

Adventure Treks gave Cece a place to grow and excel in a variety of life skills. It wasn’t just a one-off camp experience, but a carefully designed program to nurture resilience, self-esteem, independence and creativity. Cece enjoyed having more responsibility and being more a part of the decision-making process. She said they were a great team that was not afraid to play the games they learned as 9th graders. The team was respectful of each member and valued each other for who they really are. Tolerance and finding the good in each person were the rule of thumb. They encouraged each other. We so appreciate all of what AT stands for. Plus, I have always found the office to be very helpful and professional. AT is worth every penny. The instructors are well-vetted and trained. The AT philosophy and pedagogy appear to attract high-quality instructors who enjoy what they do and are good role models with their private lives.

Cheryl Juneau, McLean, VA

We thought that sending our son to Adventure Treks was an investment in his outdoorsman education. We had no idea how formative these programs would be! He came home more confident, more helpful, more appreciative, and above all, HAPPY! I have never heard him as happy as when I got the first phone call home from his first AT trip. He has a deeper appreciation for how his health is affected by exercise and by being outside. He has great respect for the AT instructors, and he gained a greater respect for the outdoors. He feels he has friendships to last a lifetime. He has already visited one friend in South Carolina. They all keep up with each other online.

I feel like the AT staff is like a family and that they know who my son is what he is doing. The level of knowledge they showed gave me a great deal of confidence in sending my son off with the AT program. He would not get lost in the system.

Tali Levy, San Mateo, CA

My son loved the smallness of the group, felt very connected to the group leaders, and spoke at great length about the Wilderness EMT class. He loved summiting Mt. Adams. It was very difficult for him, yet he succeeded and was exceptionally proud of himself and the encouragement he received. He loved learning how to lead an AT trip. I’m fairly certain his time with you isn’t done—expect a job application!

Amanda Schwartz, Amsterdam, Netherlands

She has loved every summer that she participated in AT; she always comes back so happy that it’s almost a letdown to return to the Netherlands! It’s been an excellent experience and a wonderful chance to discover her strengths and find her tribe. I see that Jillian is increasingly ready for adulthood, and AT helps that a lot.

Liz Kelly, Germany

Jack was so positively influenced from his Leadership Summit experience that it was woven into his college application essay on how it affected him. Adventure Treks is a fantastic experience that provides an open and safe community for all students to be themselves and thrive. And the office has always been most courteous and helpful in any correspondence I’ve had over the years!

Ann Stout, Houston, TX

Emma returns from her trips poised, centered, and ready for the school year. After a brief few days of missing her friends, she realizes she can still stay in touch via social media and appreciates having contacts around the country and overseas.

California climbers train for Mt. Everest from the comfort of their own beds

A man wears a blue air mask while exercising.

Graham Cooper sleeps with his head in a bag.

Not just any bag. This one has a hose attached to a motor that slowly lowers the oxygen level to mimic, as faithfully as possible, the agonies of fitful sleep at extreme altitude: headaches, dry mouth, cerebral malaise.

“It’s not all bad,” Cooper insisted, nodding to the humming motor. “That’s like white noise.”

Cooper, 54, an Oakland biotech executive who has handled finance for a number of companies, including one that sold for $7 billion, isn’t a masochist, exactly. He’s acclimatizing, in the bedroom of his second home near Lake Tahoe, for an attempt to climb Mt. Everest in May.

A close-up view of a pulse oximeter on a person's finger.

He has signed up with an Olympic Valley-based guide service whose founder, Adrian Ballinger, is breaking with decades of tradition to create what he believes are better and more ethical ways to climb the world’s tallest mountain.

Ballinger said he was appalled by the risks, filth and ballooning crowds on the traditional southern trek up the mountain in Nepal. That’s the route familiar from countless documentaries and books, including the 1997 classic “Into Thin Air.”

So he decided to take clients up on the north side, a journey that starts in Tibet.

“It’s colder, the route is more difficult, and the bureaucracy of dealing with China and getting the permits is a complete nightmare,” Ballinger said. “But despite those things, the Chinese are attempting to regulate, so once you get on the mountain, it’s safer, it’s cleaner, and it’s much less busy.”

Ballinger is also pioneering a technique he calls “rapid ascent,” which cuts the duration of the expedition roughly in half: from about two months to about one. That suits his clients, who usually have more spare money than time. And it buys Ballinger more time to spend at home with his wife and newborn son.

The catch? You have to spend a few months before the trip with your head in the bag.

“It’s not great, I’m not gonna lie,” Ballinger said with a laugh, but the technology is improving.

A man skis up a snowy slope.

“Hypoxic tents,” as they’re called, have been used by other endurance athletes for years. In their original form, they would cover a client’s entire bed. That led to difficult conversations with spouses and partners about the necessity of sleeping at progressively higher simulated altitudes until they reached the height of Everest’s base camp, roughly 18,000 feet, where there’s about half the oxygen available at sea level.

As you can imagine, some clients wound up relegated to a couch with their bizarre-looking contraptions.

Cooper, who used one of the enormous old tents preparing for a 2015 trip to climb the highest peaks in Antarctica and South America, confessed he had no luck sweet-talking Hilary, his wife of 28 years, into sharing the adventure. He got bounced to a guest room.

“It was a lonely boy-in-the-bubble experience,” he said. But he has fond memories of the looks on his kids’ faces as they trooped into his little dungeon to kiss him good night.

A man lies in bed with the upper portion of his body covered in a plastic tent.

This time around, “the bag,” as he calls it, covers just his head and upper torso and takes up about a quarter of the bed. Hilary sleeps next to him, Cooper said, and she finds the hum of the motor surprisingly soothing.

It goes without saying that the luxury of acclimatizing at home, in bed, with your partner curled up beside you, represents a profound break from the usual manner of preparing to ascend what is still one of the world’s deadliest mountains .

The traditional method starts in Kathmandu, at nearly 5,000 feet, where climbers spend a few days getting over jet lag. That’s usually followed by a quick flight to the small mountain town of Lukla, at just over 9,300 feet. The airport there — perched on a narrow Himalayan shelf surrounded by towering peaks, with a steep drop-off at the end of the runway — is regarded as one of the trickiest places in the world to land an airplane.

From there, climbers begin a long, deliberately slow 10-ish-day hike to base camp. The point is to give the body time to gradually adjust to the lack of oxygen.

A close-up of an altitude generator used for low-oxygen training.

Ballinger cuts nearly two weeks from his trips by driving his bedroom-acclimatized clients from the airport in Lhasa, Tibet, straight up to the northern route’s base camp, which is also at about 18,000 feet.

For some old-school purists, eliminating the long walk borders on sacrilege, said Will Cockrell, a journalist whose recent book, “Everest, Inc.,” explores the evolution of commercial guiding on the mountain. “They’ll say, ‘You’re not a real climber; you’re not a real nature lover,’” Cockrell said.

But since the arrival of big commercial expeditions on Everest in the mid-1990s — complete with Sherpas to install climbing ropes, chefs to cook meals in camp, team doctors to monitor health, and guides to accompany clients every step of the way — Mt. Everest has ceased to be a classic off-the-grid mountaineering challenge.

“It has come to represent something completely different,” Cockrell said, “something crazy to do to shake up your life, like running an Ironman.”

Ballinger makes no apologies. “We’re not old school, we don’t spend a lot of time sitting around drinking whiskey and playing cards,” he said.

That suits his clients, who “tend to be pretty type A, pretty high performing in everything they do,” Ballinger said.

A woman in a sweater organizes luggage for a trip.

They’d better be. His company, Alpenglow Expeditions , charges $165,000 (before tip) for a private climb, meaning one professionally certified guide per client, and $98,000 for a group climb with three clients per guide.

“We’re proudly expensive,” Ballinger said. “I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what it takes to run a trip safely and ethically, and this is what it takes.”

Climbing from the north side, as Ballinger does, avoids the huge crowds who flock to the southern base camp from all over the world every May, the prime climbing season on Everest, to wait for a brief window of good weather to try to make it to the summit.

Anyone who has even loosely followed events on Mt. Everest in recent years is probably familiar with the terrifying “conga line” photos of climbers stuck in the world’s highest traffic jam.

It forms just below the summit on the southern route, at the last technical obstacle, a nearly vertical 40-foot rock wall called the Hillary Step. It’s on a ridge with a 10,000-foot drop to the climber’s right and an 8,000-foot drop to the left. So, when exhausted and inexperienced climbers inevitably struggle there, everybody else waits in a single file, hanging onto a fixed rope, while the bottled oxygen they need to survive at that altitude slowly drains away.

A man wearing shorts and sandals inspects a puffy yellow snowsuit.

Worse is the Khumbu Icefall, a glacier just above the southern base camp. It’s best known for wide spine-tingling crevasses spanned by flimsy-looking aluminum ladders lashed together with rope. Climbers have to walk across those ladders, wearing big boots and crampons, as they make multiple trips back and forth to advanced camps to acclimatize before finally heading for the summit.

As dangerous as it is for the mostly foreign climbers and guides, the odds are even worse for the local Sherpas, who regularly traverse the Khumbu ferrying equipment — tents, food, oxygen canisters — for the climbing teams. Last year, the deadliest climbing season in Everest history, three Sherpas were killed in the Khumbu when a towering block of ice collapsed and buried them.

In six seasons climbing the southern route, from 2009 to 2014, Ballinger said he passed through the Khumbu 38 times and had two close calls. While nobody on his teams lost their lives there, he helped recover the bodies of other climbers who had not been so lucky.

Finally, he did the math and concluded there was no way he could get through a whole career — 20 or 30 years — without losing someone he was responsible for in the Khumbu.

“I just couldn’t do it anymore,” Ballinger said. “I just couldn’t justify the risk.”

A man loads skis into the back of an SUV, next to his muscular golden-brown dog.

Ballinger’s data-driven approach and stellar track record were enough to win over Cooper.

And he has been willing to wait.

He was ready to climb Everest four years ago, but when China shut down expeditions to its side of the mountain in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ballinger stuck to his principles and refused to resume climbing with the crowds in Nepal. This is the first year since the pandemic that the Chinese side has been open.

The Alpenglow team, which includes 26 clients, guides and Sherpas hoping to reach the summit, were originally scheduled to begin their expedition in late April. After a late permitting change from the Chinese government, that date has been pushed back to May 7.

Cooper has competed in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii 11 times and has won the legendary Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile ultra-marathon. He is not a man accustomed to sitting around. “I’m feeling ready and anxious to get going,” he texted a reporter last week.

When not trying to sleep in his hypoxic tent, Cooper has spent his training days in Tahoe on back-country skis doing laps up and down a mountain, his 3-year-old dog, a Vizsla named “Busy,” at his heels. Indoors, he straps on a hypoxic mask hooked to the same motor he uses for the sleeping tent and rides a stationary bike an hour at a time. Or climbs a StairMaster. Or throws on his mountaineering boots and a heavy backpack and trudges up and down slopes.

“I’m addicted to doing this kind of stuff,” said Cooper, who ran his first marathon when he was 13. “I just feel like a fundamentally happier person when I’m training.”

Ballinger leads clients on bucket list climbs all around the globe. Many of the treks present more interesting technical challenges than Everest. Almost all of them feel like wild outposts compared with the circus vibe on Everest’s south side.

Still, he gets poetic when he describes why so many clients are drawn to the world’s tallest summit.

“Because it’s so hard,” he said. It takes incredible fitness, mental fortitude and a heavy dose of luck to make it to the top. And no matter how many precautions you take, there’s that uncontrollable element of risk.

“It’s not just a battle for success, it’s a battle for survival up there,” Ballinger said. “That’s something that many of us have not experienced otherwise. I think that really captures people.”

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.
