Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're traveling to is part of the Schengen Agreement.

This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom. 

To determine whether the country you're traveling to requires a visa, head to the   Schengen Visa's information website.  

What is the internet access like in Europe?

You can easily access the internet in most countries in Europe, generally in capital cities and other major towns. Internet access may be limited in regional locations such as national parks or remote villages in some countries. 

Can I use my cell phone in Europe?

You shouldn't have a problem using your cell phone while traveling throughout Europe, however, your international data roaming will need to be activated in order to connect to the internet or send messages (unless you connect to the local wi-fi).

Europe is considered a reasonably safe continent for LGBTQIA+ travelers with plenty of countries openly accepting, welcoming, and embracing the community.

Some countries still hold traditional religious beliefs such as Belarus and Poland so a degree of caution should be taken when travelling around cities and remote regions in those countries.

Will I need a socket adapter for Europe?

If you plan on traveling to multiple countries throughout Europe then purchasing an all-in-one, worldwide adapter is the safest way to go.

I f you don't want to do that, your safest bet is to buy an adapter that uses C or E/F-type plugs as most European countries recognize this.

When you purchase a package consisting of flights and hotels (and even rail tickets, in the case of Europe) there’s a good chance you’ll save money. While it’s not a guarantee, we’ve found the prices of packages are usually less expensive than purchasing flights and hotels separately.

Since there are lots of places to purchase vacation packages, we wanted to narrow it down for you. These 9 websites all offer European vacation packages and will be a great starting point for planning your vacation.

Eurailing Packages is a little different than the rest of our featured websites because instead of a traditional hotel and airfare package, it offers packages that bundle accommodations and train tickets . This will be handy for vacation packages within Europe, but not necessarily for getting to Europe.

Since train travel is very popular in Europe, we thought this was a great option to include in this list. You can choose from the site’s predesigned packages and current deals, or you can build your custom accommodation and rail package.

Something thing to keep in mind when using this website is that the price includes a hostel, not a hotel . You’ll have the option to pay extra for a hotel when you’re finalizing the details of your trip but you won’t know the specific hotel or room type until after your booking is complete.

Hot Tip: Use points and miles to fly to Europe when your vacation package only includes accommodations and rail tickets.

Grand European Travel might be a good place to search for a European vacation package if you’d like the planning done for you. This website offers lots of predesigned trips but doesn’t have the option to make your own. For someone who doesn’t want to do the legwork of planning a trip, that could be a welcome benefit.

If you decide to book a vacation package through Grand European Travel, keep in mind that solo travelers will default to a shared room. If you’d rather have private accommodations, you can select that during the checkout process for an additional charge.

Another nice thing about booking through Grand European Tours is that in addition to only needing to pay a deposit to reserve your trip, you can get a full refund if you need to cancel within 30 days . You can also change your departure date or destination free of charge until 60 days before your trip.

Costco Travel is another great site that can help you find the perfect European vacation. You can choose a curated package or design your own.

While you have to be a Costco member to purchase Costco Travel, you can search for a package without a membership. Often, packages purchased through Costco Travel will come with a Costco Shop Card or extra perks which can more than make up for the price of the membership. Plus, Executive members earn 2% back on purchases, including those from Costco Travel.

If you’re an Executive Member, be sure to keep an eye out for extra perks on your vacation package. These can often make up for the additional cost of an Executive Membership.

Take a look at some of the member benefits we found on a London and Paris vacation package:

Bottom Line: You have to be a Costco member to purchase a vacation package from Costco Travel, but you can check prices without being a member. Booking a European trip through Delta Vacations can be a great way to earn lots of Delta SkyMiles .

You’ll also want to keep an eye out for deals that will award you extra bonus points. At the time of writing, you could get up to a $400 Delta gift card or up to 75,000 Delta SkyMiles for booking a flight and hotel package .

You can earn an additional 2 to 3 SkyMiles per $1 spent when you use a Delta co-branded credit card , too.

If you’d rather use Delta SkyMiles to pay for your vacation package, you can do that, too. You can pay for all or part of your vacation with your miles at 1 cent each in value . That’s just about what we value Delta SkyMiles at, so this can represent a good use of miles.

Bottom Line: You can either earn or use SkyMiles for a vacation package purchased through Delta Vacations.

Expedia is a tried-and-true website for booking travel because it’s easy to use and often has great deals. Your European vacation package can be customized to include flights, a hotel, and even a rental car.

The map feature is a great tool for finding a hotel in the perfect location , and there are lots of filtering options that will help narrow your search results even more.

Expedia participates in the One Key rewards program  which allows you to earn and use points on eligible trips and access special member pricing . This is a good way to earn rewards when you don’t participate in a hotel chain’s loyalty program or are booking a hotel that doesn’t have its own loyalty program.

United Vacations is a great website to use to search for European vacation packages, especially if you like flying United or live near a United hub that will have lots of flight options.

It can also be a great option for anyone who wants to earn more United MileagePlus miles — you’ll earn them on your vacation package if you provide your membership number at booking. Unfortunately, you can’t redeem United miles for your trip.

This site has many of the sorting and filtering options you’d find on other sites, and you can even add extras like trip insurance or airport transfers to your package.

Bottom Line: You’ll earn United MileagePlus miles when you book a package through United Vacations, but you can’t redeem miles for any part of your trip. Instead, check out these ideas when you’re ready to spend your miles.

CheapTickets is a popular online travel agency for hotels, flights, rental cars, and vacation packages. It’s owned by Expedia so it has the same functionality as that site, but it often has different pricing, so it’s worth checking them both out.

During the booking process, you’ll be able to add extras like airport transportation, a rental car, activities, and trip insurance .

Hot Tip: Before you add trip protection from an online travel agency like CheapTickets, be sure to read up on the policy for your credit card with travel insurance so you don’t end up buying something you may already have. You might also want to price out a policy with a few travel insurance companies to compare plans and prices before you book your trip.

Booking a European vacation package through Priceline is a straightforward and easy process. You can search for any combination of flights, hotels, and cars under the Bundle + Save search tab on the home page. The search results will quickly give you hotel information including the price and how much you can expect to save on the package.

Priceline has its own loyalty program called Priceline VIP that offers discounts, a best rate guarantee, and Express Deal coupons. While these perks are available as soon as you join, the discounts get bigger and better as you reach new status tiers within the program.

Hotel savings start at 10% for all members and go up to 50% on over 45,000 hotels for top-tier VIP Platinum members . Every accommodation was out of this world, the meals were amazing, and the itinerary was outstanding. We traveled with two babies and they helped plan a wonderful, magical trip. We enjoyed Scotland so much and are looking forward to traveling there again with the same travel company! They even planned a sweet surprise for my four-year-old’s birthday that was so special for her. We were just so pleased with everything.

We had an amazing trip, with professional service, detailed planning, and flexibility for changes! Before we had even paid a single dollar, our Zicasso travel agent must have spoken to me on the phone seven or eight times, for three to four hours in total, to plan the itinerary in detail, making great suggestions and swift edits. It was so nice of her to put in that much effort before we had even confirmed that we would go ahead with the itinerary. After confirming the itinerary, the experience was just as good. The team managed our trip from end to end, with a gift basket upon arrival (exactly as per our dietary restrictions), a Greek phone with sim card, printed copies of all boarding passes and ferry tickets, and a private driver, along with the contact details of many members of her team in case we had any questions. They allowed flexibility in the planning and were open to our changes to the itinerary, even after we reached Greece. Our driver was an absolute gentleman, opening the doors for us every time we entered the car, helping us find food, always making sure we were safe, always on time, and happy to adapt to our schedule/changes, etc. This was in January, one of the slowest months in Greece, and due to the team's planning, we had a wonderful time in Athens, Santorini, Crete, Corfu, Aristi (Zagori Mountains), Kalambaka (Meteora), and Arachova/Delphi. Thank you for an unforgettable trip. We will recommend our travel agent to any friends who decide to go to Greece!

Zicasso’s travel agent did an excellent job of listening to what we wanted to do and see on our trip, and making suggestions of places to visit. The restaurant suggestions were also very helpful. We had the perfect itinerary of scheduled tours and sightseeing that we could do on our own. The hotels were all very good and accommodated our "third person" well, with comfortable arrangements. When we ran into bad weather and road closures, our travel agent was able to quickly find us an alternative hotel close to where we were located so we could take a break in driving. This is the second time we have used Zicasso for a vacation. They do a wonderful job matching you to a travel agency.

I worked with our travel agent for my trip to Spain. He prepared an itinerary for us which was perfect, with all the places we intended to travel. I loved that he was flexible in working with us on a final itinerary that met our expectations. Our travel agent was available every step of the way, advising of any changes by tour agencies or in transportation, which gave us peace of mind during our entire trip. The tour agencies were exceptional and knowledgeable about all the places we visited. The private transportation worked out well. All drivers were accommodating and helpful with our luggage. The hotels were all central and within our budget. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend our travel company to anyone looking for a special experience in Spain. I know that when the opportunity comes I will use our travel company again. I have already recommended his services to friends and family planning to visit Spain.

The trip was generally well executed. The private transportation was prompt and dependable. The hotels were fine (Rome was better than Florence, which lacked AC in the rooms) and well located. We appreciated the daily itinerary reminders on WhatsApp. We were disappointed that there was no customized treasure hunt for the kids at the Vatican as advertised. It was just a regular private tour with no special, child-focused content/activity. This was one of the main reasons we picked this travel company over the other travel agency, so a bummer it didn’t happen. There was also a miss with our cooking class. While we had an exceptional time with the chef, we didn’t get to do the “pick out the food at the local market” part since it was a national holiday and the market was closed. That is something the travel company should have caught upfront and adjusted the itinerary around, in my opinion. My final qualm is around Cinque Terre. We were told (even after pushing back) that it wouldn’t be a good idea to stay a night or two there because restaurants and other venues would not yet be open. However, the villages were bustling and active; we definitely should have spent more time there.

Zicasso's travel partner exceeded our expectations from our first email exchange through to the last day of our trip! The travel agent who worked with us to develop the perfect trip within our time frame was amazing. She clearly listened to our preferences, goals, interests, etc. During the planning process, if something didn't seem quite right to us (and that only happened in one or two instances), she immediately looked for an alternative that worked perfectly. One example was making sure we were back in Cascais to experience their carnival parade. Another was making sure my allergies to feather and down bedding were taken care of before we arrived at each hotel. This is often a time-consuming hassle when we travel here in the States because my requests are often ignored, but there was never an issue on this trip. Because of her thorough approach, by the time we were set to travel, we felt completely confident that we were going to experience a wonderful trip. Our guide throughout our seven days in Portugal was also amazing! He quickly picked up on our preferences and interests. His knowledge of Portuguese history and culture from ancient times to today was exceptional. His recommendations for restaurants in each town or city we visited were excellent – great cuisine and establishments locals frequented. We only wish we had had more days to try all of his recommendations! Equally of note, he was a great companion and conversationalist as we traveled between destinations. We learned so much and had a great time getting to know a new country with a new friend! We highly, highly recommend our travel agency without hesitation! In fact, we've already recommended them to friends!

Georgia planned a great vacation for my family (parents plus two 20-ish daughters). We went to Athens (4nts), Naxos (4nts) and Santorini (3nts). It took a couple of iterations to finalize the itinerary (which I took as a positive because it showed Georgia was really listening and working to customize the trip what my family was looking for rather than offering a canned tour). And I may be just a *wee* picky :) The guides she secured were all wonderful. Our guide in Athens was absolutely lovely. She was knowledgeable and friendly. We were chatting like friends before too long. She also took great care of our daughter when she got a little ill during our Acropolis tour. Naxos was the favorite part of our trip. We loved what the island has: great beaches, food, restaurants, cultural sights, nature/hiking and water activities and what it did NOT have: high prices, crowds. Santorini..since it was our 1st visit, we couldn't *not* stop. It's beautiful for sure but it was also expensive and crowded. One and done for us. The transfers in all three locations were impeccable.Overall, our trip was seamless and the communication with Georgia was great throughout.

The right tour operators can make or break a trip. These specialists came out on top in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023 thanks to insider knowledge and personalized service.

While we travel to see the sights, what we really take home with us are the experiences. And finding the right tour operator — one that’s able to meld insider knowledge about a destination with the best ways to take it in — can make or break a trip. But when the right combination does come along, it can be pure magic, so it’s no wonder that the last year has seen group travel on the rise .

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Tour operators and safari outfitters were specifically rated on the criteria below:

• Itineraries/destinations
• Accommodations

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

With nine of the companies returning from last year’s list , one major trend that stands out is the focus on a region, like with this year’s No. 1 pick, ATJ, which focuses on luxury travel, ranging from bespoke private to small group itineraries, in Austrasia. Also destination experts are Inside Japan Tours (No. 10), who offer themed trips, from honeymoons to diving, around the island nation, and Vagabond Tours of Ireland (No. 12), which makes its debut on the list, standing out for its B Corporation status, as it guides travelers around the Emerald Isle in their choice of style, either relaxed and culture-focused or active and adventurous. 

Also notable are the operators who go a step beyond, like two returning favorites: Artisans of Leisure (returning as No. 3) has been called “top notch”; one reader said that “no other tour operator comes close in terms of knowing the destinations [and] understanding what we want and executing our trip flawlessly.” Black Tomato (dropping from last year’s No. 4 to a still respectable No. 6) manages to both fulfill curiosity and allay FOMO on its adventures globally.

But more than anything, it’s loyalty that shows what a strong tour operator is made of, and readers often raved about return visits with a particular company. One, for instance, shared that after 25 journeys, Du Vine Cycling + Adventure Co. (No. 2) stands out among them all. “The best cycling trips I’ve been on,” they said. “Great staff, accommodations, and first class all the way.” And that’s the winning combo for a tour company — leaving travelers with that passion for exploring the world through their eyes. Formerly known as Asia Transpacific Journeys, ATJ made the list in 2011, 2017, and 2018, and it now leapfrogs back in triumphantly, notching the No. 1 spot. Offering tours in countries like Australia, Bhutan, Japan, Laos, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Vietnam, and Taiwan, the company specializes in custom itineraries and private group trips. But what travelers rave about is its band of extremely helpful customer service reps who are “responsive and personable.” They added, “I can call and speak with a live person immediately.” Customers tend to be loyal, but so are the agents: “I have used the same agent and she always remembers what we like and any special needs we have.”

Capitals Journey of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia & Finland - 10 Days

The first part of the tour, from Vilnius to Riga was good. The tour programme was as marketed and the tour leader was informative. The dinner in Riga was good. Nevertheless, we had a new tour guide in Tallin and she only coverrd a half day programme. For the dinner somebody came and guide us to the Maikravh resto and left us alone to go back to hotel. As the hotel was quite a distance from the old town so we have to look for taxis by our own. The dinner was disappointed, we were the only guest in the keller restaurant and the food was aweful, let aline the way they served the dinner. It was served in a plate in which we had to share.. So it was not worth for the price we paid. The ferry trip was surprising as there was no information in advance about the ferry condition. It was aweful for us who dont have any experiences to take ferry. The programme in Tallinn and Helsinki was not as offered.

10 Day Wild Irish Experience - Small Group Tour

The trip was amazing. Our bus driver/tour guide, Lee, was fantastic. He looked after us and shared his love and knowledge of Ireland so that we grew to love it too. Nothing was too much trouble. Our accommodation was perfect and the food and pubs were better than I had I had imagined. Can't recommend it enough.

Greek Island Hopping | SemiPrivate with 4* Hotels | 11 Days

For the most part this tour was great. Moving from isle to isle so frequently, it might make for a better experience to offer the option to spend.3 days in Naxos and Santorini vs 2. Accommodations in Paros and Naxos were nice but not 4 star quality~~ especially in Paros. The hotel was remote from everything including transportation and restaurants and not walkable to anything. The Naxos hotel room had an unusual interior. The Travel Zone staff were wonderful and were responsive to any issues. And the Santorini sunset cruise was fabulous.

Small Group Sicily Food & Wine Tour (Maximum 8 Guests)

A fun tour. The group I travelled with made quick friends. Most of the accommodations were acceptable. Taormina was a treat staying at the Splendid hotel. Marcus our guide in Palermo was exceptional. I felt the food and wine experiences were average.

This was our 6th bus tour but first for Tourradar. It was excellent because good standard of hotel, which were also centrally located. Was given adequate free time so we were not always rushing. Day start time were good. Included breakfast dinner and some lunch all good Sicily plenty to see wonderful place BUT difficult for group with 3 languages so info was rushed and difficult to follow Plus Tour leader treated up as sheep do not ask why but just follow me and accept. Prefer to be given option eg follow me how long how far and why . Also tourradar excellent response time to questions. Roberto & Debbie

A lot of information which is great if you’re into the history! The group size changes and so does your guide from the half day sightseeing to the 4 day classical. You dont get a lot of free time in any of the cities unless you like wandering in the dark. Greece is a beautiful country!

13 Day Full Irish Experience - Small Group Tour

This was a perfect tour! Our tour leader, Sean, could not have been better. All arrangements for lodging, group meals, suggestions for activities on our own, and the songs he played on the bus went smoothly! He put a lot of effort and heart into this.

I was so lucky to meet some amazing people on this tour. The tour and activities have been amazing and surprising varied. I would most definitely recommend this Experience to Any one without hesitation!

Excellent tour, very well organised. Nice and clean accomodations . Very comprehensive tour, all the main sites are covered, but some days are really a bit tiring .Soleto's assistance provided before and during the tour was superb. Good value for money.

This tour was the very best experience we have ever had traveling overseas. The booking process was seamless and painless. We felt especially grateful that while the group was limited to 8 participants, it was guaranteed to proceed with 2 people. As it ended up, our trip was just me and my husband and we felt so fortunate to have had the attention of the guides in such a personal way. The guides were all tremendous and I am confident that a larger group would have felt equally tended to. Special thanks to our guides and drivers: Denise, Orazio, Roberto, Carlos, Fabio and Massimo. Part of what was truly evident was how passionate they each were about Sicily and how many of them had connections with people at the restaurants, local businesses and attractions that we went to. We felt like we were in such good hands during the time we were with all of the guides. Each tour and activity was enlightening and educational. The included lunches and other meals were top notch. The opening night walking food and wine tour was a great way to kickoff the trip. There were some others who joined us for that portion, and it was most welcome. I don't think it would have been as much fun for the restaurants and enoteca to have just 2 people and the guide show up, and we knew the rest of the trip we would have individual attention. We felt pampered with our lunches on the Mafia tour, at the winery on Etna, in Marzememi and Agrigento. There was never a feeling of penny-pinching, more plush and like what we would have chosen for ourselves! The selected hotels were excellent! Centrally located, each with a fantastic breakfast spread and fun bar/restaurants. We would happily go back to any of them again and recommend them. We loved the scheduling each day and felt like we had a great mix of free time to explore on our own. Lastly, Graziana was out lifeline while we were traveling. She connected with us daily to check in, and to share the next days plan and name of our guide and where they would meet us. She made dinner reservations for us while we were there and provided recommendations that were helpful. We didn't encounter any issues, but felt that we had a ready ally if needed. Massimo also checked in midtrip, so we truly felt like everyone was interested in us having the best possible trip. I cannot wait to return to Sicily. We have recommended Sicily Activities to many people since our return and would book again in a heartbeat.

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.
