Inside Betty White’s Carmel House She Built with Husband Allen Ludden & Never Wanted to Leave

Olawale Ogunjimi

December 31, 2022, was the first anniversary of Betty White's death. White passed away on December 31, 2022, just two weeks shy of her 100th birthday. The world mourned the beloved actress as they rang in the New Year.

White was known worldwide for the characters she played in TV shows and movies that were comforting to many. Colleagues, friends, and fans quickly flooded social media with tribute posts to White, mentioning her impact on their lives.

When her death was announced, it was said that White had passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones. White had no children but had close friends around her when she took her last breaths.

At the time of her death announcement, it was unclear what she had passed away from. However, it later became clear that White had suffered a stroke days before her death, from which she was ever able to recover.

White's agent gave a statement to "People," saying that she suffered a stroke a week before her death and passed away in her sleep. The agent, Jeff Witjas, continued to say he was grateful for how she passed. He said :

"Betty passed in her sleep peacefully without pain. To me this is the most important thing and brings me comfort as her dear friend."

Betty White and her husband, Allen Ludden's marital home in Carmel held a special spot in the actress' heart. She never wanted to leave the property, even after her husband's demise. Take a look inside the couple's jointly built property.

The iconic Betty White, a Chicago native, was noted for her infectious smile, unfailing glow, and warm heart. On-screen, she was a goddess who knew how well to impress her legion of fans.

While the terrific actress had a way of charming her audience, she was great at keeping cordial relationships with people around her, including friends and colleagues.

White, who gladly and effortlessly showed off her comedic chops on the big screens and in real life, also shared a heavenly love story with her husband, Allen Ludden.

Ludden was a successful TV game host whose star aligned with the actress almost as soon as they met. They enjoyed marital bliss until he died in 1981. Still, White never stopped loving her deceased prince charming.

She kept his memories dear, never remarried, and wanted to continue living in their home in Carmel. The couple had built the property a few months before Ludden's death.

Marital Home in Carmel

White and Ludden experienced immense success at the time they met. Their careers were flying high, and money was the least of their worries. Thankfully, they had a genuine love for each other, and the commitment to build a home together did not come off as a bother.

The pair settled for a plot of land in Carmel, Ribera Road, to build their home that cost $170,000—verified by the property certificate in 1978. But, it took three years for the completion of their project.

Eventually, the structure sat on more than 3,600 square feet, overlooking the ocean. The celebrity home possesses five bathrooms, two bedrooms. Altogether, it is a 17-room home worth $2,013,000.

The inside was not extremely grand but classic enough to stir attention. In 2017, the actress showed a glimpse of her ocean view abode . After entry and a "welcome to my crib" remark, fans were introduced to a dining area, tall windows, toned-down curtains, and cushion chairs.

Afterward, she walked into the cream-colored kitchen that comprised a kitchen island decorated with flowers and roosters. White swiftly opened the fridge to exhibit its content. Inside was gluten-free mac and cheese, energy drinks, and a hot dog pyramid for her animals.

Next on display was the "state of the art" aquarium with a "priceless" collection of her tropical fish before the smiling actress strode into one of her bedrooms filled with hanging frames, bedside lamps, and windows that overlooked a garden of green plants.

White's death has been ruled as natural causes as opposed to the rumors that it was covid-19 related.

White defined the bedroom as "where the magic happens" before letting a playful magician wow her viewers. Even though there was no apparent magic in that room, the veteran star informed her fans in a book that she keeps a special room in the house full of her kind of magic—stuffed animals.

The "Golden Girls" alum was an animal lover who dedicated her time and funds to support animals in need. She also had a room full of lifeless animals, including an armadillo, a rhinoceros, a grizzly bear, and a beluga whale, which she occasionally talked to.

Allen's Two Days In the House

Another remarkable magic in White's life appears to be her love life with Allen Ludden. The entertainer anchored CBS's "Password" that hosted celebrities, and White, a promising young actress, featured as a guest.

Ludden was a widower with three kids, and White had experienced two failed marriages, but somehow, these two were able to make a captivating love story.

After several proposal attempts, the actress, who did not feel confident enough to marry, agreed to be a third-time bride. In 2012, she confessed that it was a hard decision considering her past, but added :

"Then I thought, 'Am I going to live the rest of my life without this man?' Thank goodness we got married when we did."

She married the successful TV host in the 1960s, and they stayed together until his death caused by stomach cancer. While they built their Carmel home, Ludden was diagnosed with the disease. He died four months after they completed renovations, having spent only two nights in the house.

Years later, she still protected his memory and focused on her life instead of finding another partner. However, this did not stop her from feeling devastated. Losing Ludden was challenging, and she once told a publication that:

"I came upstairs, and our dogs were lying on his robe. I just fell apart, and we sat there together on the floor."

‘Super Spectacular’: Inside Betty White’s Beloved Carmel Estate

Actress Betty White died last year at the age of 99 and left behind a stellar legacy in the entertainment world. The Emmy winner also held some incredible real estate, including an oceanfront estate in Carmel, CA, that has surfaced on the market for $7,950,000.

The “Golden Girls” star and her husband, game-show host Allen Ludden , bought the prized property in 1978 for $170,000. They proceeded to build a custom home, which was completed in 1981. Unfortunately, Ludden died before the couple could enjoy the property together. White held on to the coastal retreat for the rest of her life.

Let’s take a look inside her beloved estate in Carmel.

Gorgeous gardens

Perched above the ocean, this property offers views of the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, Ribera Beach, and Monastery Beach.

The quarter-acre grounds boast a storybook garden with lush blooms, groomed shrubs, and a winding path. There’s a back gate and path that lead to a sandy beach.

Continuity is key here: The grounds have been tended by the same gardener since the home was built.

Midcentury modern details

Designed by architect Richard Hicks , the space features key tenets of midcentury modern design, including wide-open spaces, wood paneling, beamed ceilings, and walls of windows. The three-story home measures 3,600 square feet and has four bedrooms and 4.5 baths.

The home’s low-key design turns the focus to its natural surroundings, notes listing agent Nicole Truszkowski , with Sotheby’s International Realty.

“It’s elegantly understated in terms of the home itself. It was designed to truly draw your attention to nature and the ocean, wildlife, and everything you see,” says Truszkowski. “I think it speaks to the owner of the home and the things she appreciated. The home is a reflection of that.”

Indoor-outdoor flow

The living spaces extend to the exterior decks overlooking the gardens and sandy beach. In the living room, there are walls of glass and a fireplace. The dining room is adjacent to the kitchen and also offers ocean views.

Special sanctuary

While White spent the last years of her life at her Brentwood mansion in Los Angeles, this coastal getaway provided her a place to “recharge and rejuvenate,” says Truszkowski.

“Spending time in Carmel was one of Betty’s favorite things to do. She enjoyed many treasured moments with her family and close friends. The home embodies the spirit of Betty and Allen,” she adds.

We especially love the primary bedroom with its ocean views, fireplace, and en suite bath.

Priced right?

Real estate prices in this elite enclave have catapulted since White snagged this property for $170,000 in the ’70s . Currently, the median home list price is an astonishing $2,195,000 and only 117 homes are available for sale, according to Realtor.com® data.

The rarity of an oceanfront abode coming on the market for the first time in over 40 years adds to its interest. The trustee will review offers on April 4, and if you’d like to put in a bid from the comfort of your home office, think again.

“You have to physically tour the property to submit an offer,” Truszkowski says. “If you really want to buy the property, hop on a plane, come, and look at it.”

She’s confident potential buyers will be impressed by the place once they set foot on the grounds—and not just because of its connection to the legendary actress.

“There’s an interest just because of that,” Truszkowski concedes. “But the property itself is really, really special. It’s super spectacular.”

Truszkowski and Zak Freedman with Truszkowski, Freedman & Associates of Sotheby’s International Realty–Carmel Brokerage hold the listing.

A Look at All of Betty White's Homes

Including the Carmel-by-the-Sea abode she built with Allen Ludden.

American treasure Betty White was far more than just an actress—she was an all-around good human being, beloved for her wit, humor, and passion for animals. White was born in Oak Park, Illinois, but her family moved to California in 1923. She owned just two homes in the second half of her life: a Brentwood, Los Angeles residence and, her favorite, the house she built in Carmel-by-the-Sea with her third husband, Allen Ludden.

Despite being famous, White only invited the public into her home a few times throughout her eight-decade career . We dug deep into the archives to bring you these photos of the actress at home—keep reading to take a peek inside and learn even more about the actress and her career.

Betty White was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on January 17, 1922. But she didn't live there long—her family moved to Alhambra, California, shortly after White turned one.

As a teenager, White attended Beverly Hills High School, from which she graduated in 1939. It was there she discovered her passion and talent for acting.

White had initially wanted to become a forest ranger, because of her love for animals, but that wasn't a viable career path for women at the time. The U.S. Forest Service made White an honorary ranger in 2010. Here, she's pictured at home with her dogs Bandy (top left), Danny (top right), and Stormy (bottom) in 1954.

Before White's career could begin after graduation, World War II broke out. White drove delivery trucks for the American Women's Voluntary Services in California.

Though White snagged a few television gigs during the industry's nascent days—she participated in an experimental broadcast in 1939—she primarily worked in radio in her early career. Her TV breakthrough came in 1949, when she co-hosted the show A l Jarvis's Hollywood on Television, eventually succeeding the eponymous host.

She was then given her own daily talk and variety show, The Betty White Show , which ran from 1952 through 1954.

The Betty White Show was pioneering in many ways. White herself became the first woman to produce a national TV show—and she was the first woman to hire a female director.

White also received some criticism for featuring Black tap dancer Arthur Duncan on the show. "All through the South, there was this whole ruckus. They were going to take the show off the air if we didn't get rid of Arthur because he was Black," White explained in a 2018 documentary about her life. "I said, 'I'm sorry, but, you know, he stays. Live with it!'"

White also starred in two sitcoms in the 1950s: Life With Elizabeth and Date with the Angels . Neither was particularly long-lived.

But White met Lucille Ball while filming Date with the Angeles, as the show was shot on the same lot as I Love Lucy. The two bonded over working in a male-dominated industry and became life-long friends.

In the 1960s, White's career moved into game shows, not as a host, but as a guest. She made appearances on such shows as The Match Game , I've Got a Secret , and What's My Line?

In fact, White met the love of her life, Allen Ludden, on a game show. Ludden hosted Password , on which White was a guest.

White and Ludden married in 1963. It was White's third marriage and Ludden's second.

Though the two had no children together, White helped raise Ludden's children from his previous marriage: David, Martha, and Sarah. And there were always plenty of pets.

Ludden convinced White to move to Chappaqua, New York, for a brief spell—Ludden lived there with his children. But the move didn't last, as White insisted on returning to California.

White was a stalwart Californian. She even turned down a job hosting The Today Show, because she didn't want to live in New York. The job ended up going to Barbara Walters.

White's breakthrough moment in television happened rather late in her career. She joined T he Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1973, when she was 51.

Her character, Sue Ann Nivens, was originally just a guest on the show. But the character was upgraded to a series regular one season later.

White would win her first Primetime Emmy while playing Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. But that wasn't her first Emmy—here, she's pictured with her Regional Emmy Award, which she won in 1952 for Life With Elizabeth.

Where Does Betty White Live?

Betty White

The Golden Girls '  Betty White is one of the most loved women in Hollywood with a career spanning over 80 years. In 2018, the then-96-year old revealed to Parade Magazine that her secret to a long life is simply knowing how to enjoy it. "Accentuate the positive, not the negative. It sounds so trite, but a lot of people will pick out something to complain about, rather than say, 'Hey, that was great!' It's not hard to find great stuff if you look," she said. She also attributed her long-term health to vodka and hot dogs.

Outside of her life in the spotlight, the 98-year-old lives a normal life in the neighborhood of Carmel Meadows in Carmel, California (via Virtual Globetrotting ). The actress reportedly purchased the home in the early 1980s with her husband, the late Allen Ludden, and has lived there ever since. According to  Mansion Global , it's a wealthy area with many holiday homes and other celebrities who live there, including Clint Eastwood and Sammy Hagar.

Betty White's Californian home overlooks the coast

During a house tour on YouTube, Betty White opened up her home to the world. And it's just as cute as she is. Her understated living room is cozy; complete with sofas and a fireplace; her bedroom is painted yellow and features a four-poster bed; and the kitchen is large and practical with an island in the middle. She's even got a mini aquarium with a couple of fish (yes, that would normally be known as a fish tank!). There are plenty of personalized picture frames and trinkets scattered strategically throughout her abode, and she appears to be a big fan of antique furniture and subtle floral prints as they appear in almost every room.

Based on an aerial shot from  Virtual Globetrotting, the spacious house seems to be surrounded by greenery for privacy and also features a backyard with lush gardens that overlooks the Carmel coastline.

Fans worldwide cried out when Betty White died on New Year’s Eve of 2021, just two weeks shy of her 100th birthday. Though only a few months have gone by, one of White’s homes, a beachside home in Carmel, California, has already sold. And now, her primary residence, in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, has officially been listed.

Per Dirt , White and her late husband Allen Ludden commissioned the Carmel traditional-style home in 1981, and though Ludden didn’t live to see its completion, it’s clear after 40 years of ownership that White enjoyed it plenty. All wood and stone, the four bedroom, five bathroom home was perfectly designed for its beachside placement, both in its laid back style and with the excess of backside windows that allowed a crisp view of the ocean from many of its rooms. The 3,621 square foot home found a buyer within two weeks at a price of $10.775 million— nearly three million above asking .

Her three quarters of an acre L.A. property was listed today as a tear down, with only the exterior available for potential buyers to tour. The home was reportedly White’s primary residence since she and Ludden moved in in the 1960s, about ten years after the colonial-style five bedroom, six bathroom house was built. Bright yellow shutters and white siding fit make the home perfectly suited to the sunny locale, as does the swimming pool.

The 'Golden Girls' star's favorite home sold after just two weeks on the market.

Betty White fans were outraged when the star's publicist shared on Instagram that her home in the posh Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles had been demolished, days before the one-year anniversary of her death.

Betty White died just a few weeks short of her 100th birthday on Dec. 31, 2021, at her Brentwood home.

We're all sad to see White's torn down but it was just one of  The Golden Girls star's homes. Her favorite place to call home was a rustic-modern Carmel-by-the-Sea beach house, which she built with her husband, Allen Ludden , in 1978. It was listed for sale in early April , and according to toptenrealestate.com , the asking price was $7.95 million. Architectural Digest reports that the house sold two weeks later for $10.775 million—nearly $3 million above asking price.

As we remember our favorite Golden Girl, take a look back at her favorite home.

As gorgeous as the home is, the most striking feature is the view of the Pacific Ocean. With wall-to-wall windows, the rooms look out at the Point Lobos Nature Reserve, Ribera Beach and Monastery Beach.

Betty White Gives Us A Hilarious House Tour - Comedy Videos

Betty White Gives Us A Hilarious House Tour

We’ve seen Betty White excel at a lot of things, and comedy is definitely one of them. Humor seems to follow her everywhere and this time is no different. Betty White gives us a hilarious house tour, and we can’t stop laughing. We know her from the famous sitcom The Golden Girls. She was the silly, naive character known as Rose. Betty is the last surviving member of the show’s amazing quartet of lead actresses that included Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty, and Rue McClanahan. While she keeps a smile on her face, she keeps the jokes spilling from her mouth! “Oh, hi there. I’m Betty White. Welcome to my crib.” She’s so funny that the sight of her generates giggles for some (not just me, right?) And the moment she says “crib” like she is a youngster on MTV Cribs makes the line even funnier. The first stop on the house tour is the kitchen. On the surface, the kitchen looks quite ordinary. Then she opens the refrigerator, replete with energy drinks and a pyramid of hotdogs. A literal pyramid of hotdogs, which she then claims is for her dog. But we know Betty White. Next, Betty shows off her aquarium and fish collection. The tank is actually quite impressive, immeshed seamlessly inside the wall as though the tank is a live picture frame. Though the only thing really moving on the inside is a lone fish. Poor thing. “And this is where the magic happens,” she says with a smile as she presents her bedroom. Yikes! The camera pans to a magician and his female assistant where they present a magic trick. “What’d you think I meant?” she asks at the tour’s conclusion. Now, now, Betty. God has surely blessed Betty with many years of age. She is now 98! Not only that, but God blessed her with the gift of humor and her gift keeps on giving. We all have gifts much like her, but unique to ourselves. Some are gifted in communication, dancing, teaching, sculpting, leading. What are some of your gifts? May we use our talents to spread love, hope, and joy to those around us, today and every day. “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17
