I will spare you the long story of how I nearly missed this Highlights of Brussels bike tour ( it had to do with my train being stuck because of cows on the track – yes, seriously ), but on a sunny September morning, I kicked myself into action, warmed up my muscles and set out to explore Brussels by bike.

The tour is held daily from April to December and starts at 10:00 AM in the Grand Place (Brussels main square).

Together with the guide, you’ll walk to the bike parking where each group member will receive a bike .

Almost all bikes had an easy system to change the height of the seat , so even if you didn’t get it quite right the first time, you’ll be able to change things up quickly along the way (I ended up tweaking mine twice until it fitted me perfectly).

The bike tour covers the following places:

• Marollen neighbourhood & Fox Square/Place du Jeu de Balles (Daily flea market)

It takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes and you’ll cover about 13kms but it’s not too strenuous.

Brussels is hilly, so you’ll encounter some uphill roads , but most of the time we got off and walked up if it was too hard. The 14 people in our group were all very different in age and sports levels and everyone could keep up easily. There was only one slightly difficult hill that had my legs shaking.

We covered a variety of street types : cobblestones in the historical centre, narrow lanes and busy streets with buses passing by but I most enjoyed the times when we rode through the parks.

The first part of the route has little traffic, while the second half is spent on the busier roads but mixed up with parks.

Around noon, there’s a 30-minute lunch break where you can have some frites from one of the oldest and most famous friteries in Brussels, Maison Antoine.

It’s take-out, but you’re allowed to eat your chips at the pub across the door if you pay for a drink. Or you can eat them on one of the many benches on the square.

At the end of the tour, you’ll return your bike to the parking lot at Place de la Putterie , which is next to Brussels Central Station and a 5-minute walk to Grand Place.

Why go cycling in Brussels?

Cycling in (and around) Brussels is significantly more fun than cycling in most capital cities of the world.

After all, in Belgium cycling is a national passion – and Brussels embraces that.

The city has a huge amount to see and cycling is the way to see it – from architecture and heritage, to green parks and proximity to famous cycling events such as the Tour of Flanders and Ghent Six Day.

Brussels is also a culinary paradise and its cycling friendly credentials are the icing on the cake. Back in 2004, the government implemented a radical new bike action plan. This has taken the city from a standing start into being one of Europe’s more dynamic big cities in terms of bicycle policy. 2021 saw a 20% increase in the number of people on a bike in Brussels!

1. Tell us about Brussels’ cycling routes

1.1 geography of brussels.

Brussels is located roughly in the centre of Belgium, with Antwerp to the north, Ghent to the west and Liege to the east. It sits within the region of Flanders , but the border with Wallonia is not far away to the south.

Cycle paths

Brussels is a surprisingly green city and one of the most popular cycle paths in Brussels is the Green Belt. It’s clearly signposted and provides a sign posted route in a circle around Brussels. There’s more on this below.

The Brussels Canal runs northeast to southwest through the city and has a big cycle lane alongside it. This really helps access through the city and is an easy geographical point.

The city centre is also criss-crossed by many cycle lanes. Most big roads have a cycle lane and the city is so compact, you can bike across Brussels in a day.

Cycle highways

Brussels is currently working on several cycle highways. The highways comprise wide and fast cycle paths in and around Brussels, and they’re nearly finished.

One of the best known is the highway connecting Antwerp to Brussels within a 2.5-hour route – so you can cycle there and back in one day, or make it an extended venture over the weekend.

With it being incredibly easy to get in and out of Brussels on the cycle highways and bike paths, Brussels makes a very good base for exploring.

Cycle Node Network

Brussels’ 220 km of cycle routes are part of the region’s cycling node network. A node is a point where the cycling paths intersect and each node has a number. You can use the nodes to plan a route. The idea is you work out which nodes you want to ride through before you set out, you make a list of them and then you know where you are when you’re out and about.

There are 65 cycling nodes within Brussels alone.

Regional Cycle Routes

Bike for Brussels have mapped out nine routes based on Regional Cycle Routes (RCRs). These are a great way to pedal through Brussels and discover delightful places!

1.2 What are the roads like?

Cycling in Brussels is relatively safe and cyclists are treated well. Cyclists can pick between the bike lanes and riding on the road. I generally suggest newcomers use the cycle routes and lanes provided, although if you’re confident you can cycle on roads.

There are few rules to impede getting outside on a bike and lots of active encouragement to do so. For example you can ride two abreast and don’t have to wear helmets or a hi-viz (thought you do have to have lights on your bike).

The government even offers residents courses on ‘riding in traffic’ – an incredibly valuable skill to have when travelling around on a bike. Bike logos have been painted on the roads to show cyclists where to cycle and help encourage them to take an active position on the road and avoid car doors opening on them. Almost all streets are also open to contraflow traffic including one-way streets. This means cyclists can ride in both directions on almost every street, to allow them to avoid busier and unpleasant streets.

Initiatives like this are signs of how accepted cycling is within Brussels and how much the authorities want to continue growing participation.

1.3 What are the must-do cycling routes in Brussels?

The Cycling Node Network and Regional Cycling Routes mentioned above are a great place to start when planning bike rides in Brussels.

Below I also share a few of my favourite cycling routes in Brussels. These are all doable by more experienced cyclists on any kind of bike.

With the Green Belt and a city that’s full of character and public gardens, you won’t be short of routes to explore and things to see!

1.3.1 Inner Brussels – Tour of Brussels’ architecture

1.3.2 Ride the Greenbelt – a 360 circle around Brussels

What to expect, 1.3.3 southwest to pajottenland (towards geraardsbergen), 1.3.4 east to leuven, 1.3.5 south of brussels, 1.3.6 folon foundation and solvay castle, 1.4 what are the key cycling events in brussels, 1.4.1 pro races to watch.

If you’re in Brussels when the Tour of Flanders is on, it’s definitely worth finding somewhere to watch on the course. The event is a national spectacle! You should be able to get to the course pretty easily due to the ease of access due to the cycling infrastructure. It would be a shame to miss such a classic professional race. In Brussels itself, there’s the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne cobbled classic race in late February each year. You can also catch the Brussels Cycling Classic race in summer-time. It’s another great race to watch live. It was first held in 1937 and goes from Paris to Brussels. There’s more information on previous races and routes here .

Finally, you may remember the Tour de France Grand Départ from Brussels in 2019. What a spectacle!

1.4.2 Amateur rides and events

Dimanche a velo select a surprising and green space on the outskirts of Brussels every month, where experienced guides take cyclists around a slightly sporty, yet relaxing tour of approximately 25-30km.

Alternatively, consider joining a weekend tour for an introduction to Brussels. They’re great for getting to know the diversity of neighbourhoods and the culture. Or join a tour to experience the history of Brussels.

Finally, on the last Friday of the month 2-3,000 cyclists join together for a mass participation ride when the weather is favourable.

This article would not be complete with mentioning the myriad of other famous cycling events in Belgium (all easily accessible from Brussels):

Visit.Brussels has set up a bike-friendly accommodation scheme to enable cyclists to find somewhere to stay with ease.

The scheme is run by Pro Velo and Visit.Brussels who have created a questionnaire that allows accommodation to certify that they are suitable for cyclists. The accommodation is then inspected.

The criteria includes parking, location near cycle routes, provision of bike repair tools and allowing guests to fill water bottles.

Renting bikes for children can be a little more difficult, but if you head to Pro Velo bike Brussels they can assist.

3.1 Bike stations

In addition:

• Villo! Has 350 self-service bicycle stations in the Brussels-Capital Region, unlimited trips are offered throughout the subscription period.
• Blue Brussels city bikes can be found at the train stations. You can rent them for the day at around 3-4 euros.

3.2 Bicycle tours in Brussels

In Brussels we have volunteers that are really passionate about their city and going green. They’re called Greeters and they offer themselves out as tour guides for tourists riding bikes in Brussels, so they can share their favourite places, stories and good deals with you. And this service is free! Find out more about the scheme here (to book a greeter, click “what is a greeter?” then “book a greeter” and you can then mention bike/cycling in the “centers of interest” and “comments” sections).

Other places offering tours are:

Pro Velo – a very well-established enterprise in Brussels and many other cities of Belgium too, offering cycling tours and a host of other information.

The Brussels Bike Tour – takes you to the sights of Brussels, including a food stop at the famous Chez Antoine chip stand.

Cactus – offer group weekend cycling tours of Brussels as well as small group tours for families, friends and organisations.

3.3 Tourist information centres

Finally, don’t hesitate to pop into any of the city’s tourist information centres where they will be able to provide information on bike tours,  bike hire and more. You can find then at BIP Koningsplein, at the Townhall at the Grand Place, in the European Quarter (Station Europe) and at the airport.

4. When to visit Brussels?

I always recommend visiting Brussels in the summer (June to August) as there is so much going on, there are less cars around, less people working in town and you can see the city with its true residents.

The vibe is much more relaxed, summer bars are open and there is always an outdoor activity to take part in. It is also warmer and much more pleasant to be outdoors exploring and taking in the city.

Some Brussels residents (like me!) take their holidays outside of summer, just because Brussels is so fantastic in summer.

During the winter the ambiance is different due to the chilly weather, but the bike paths and routes are still fun to ride. You can combine your visit with cultural events like the light “Bright Festival”, Christmas markets, Banad Festival (art nouveau/deco) and expositions. 5. Any tips for riding in Brussels?

5.1 brussels as a bike friendly city.

The 1958 World Exhibition was the catalyst that led to Brussels becoming a car-infested nightmare. Something had to be done.

The situation slowly started improving once Brussels became its own regional authority in 1989. Brussel’s bicycle policy plan was published in 2004 and this gave a big boost to the long term trend towards cycling.

The 2004 plan has been responsible for a massive increase in cycling in Brussels.

In 2004 only 1% of Brussels’ residents were cycling and since then this has increased yearly by 13%, with a 20% increase in 2021.

Having the ability to use a bicycle in Brussels safely is something the city is very passionate about; they are very keen to build an amazing infrastructure and want cyclists to feel safe when biking in Brussels.

To encourage more cyclists, they have a strong focus on green transport. Brussels has one of the largest pedestrian zones in Europe and can now firmly say they are a bicycle-friendly city with their green transport policy.

5.2 Bike cafés in and around Brussels

Cycling, beer and coffee are all very popular in Belgium so you’ll be welcome wherever you stop. However here are a few of my favourite cycling-specific cafes for you to check out!

5.3 Bicycle maps of Brussels

The ‘Brussels by Bicycle’ map, provides eight routes along the Brussels Node Network, allowing inhabitants of Brussels as well as tourists to explore the whole region with ease and fully experience the best of the city. More information on this Brussels cycle map here .

There’s also another ‘Brussels bicycle map’ which covers the cycling trails, suggested bike lanes, bike parking locations, ‘Villo!’ stations and woodlands. Most cycling associations and the tourist information office will have these available. More information on this cycle map of Brussels here .

5.4 Bikes and public transport

You don’t need a car in Brussels because everything is accessible via bike or public transport. The new cycling highway even bridges the ring road, allowing cyclists full access to the city.

Bikes are allowed on trains (though not the international high-speed trains). You need a ticket for your bike, but you can’t pre-book or reserve a space.

Many trains in the summer have a carriage just for bikes, which holds 35-40 at a time. Trains come regularly – usually every 20-30 minutes – so even if you can’t get your bike into one, another won’t be far behind.

Unfortunately trams and buses don’t allow bikes onboard, except for the long-distance Flix buses.

Thankfully Brussels is compact, so cyclists can get from one side to another easily. Brussels is continuing to grow their cycling infrastructure to make it an even better place to cycle. You might notice some of the cycle highways are still being prepared, but this work will soon be done and you won’t fail to notice how incredible it is to cycle around a city so accepting of cyclists.

5.5 Getting to Brussels

Getting to Brussels is fairly straightforward; it has superb air, road and rail connections.

The trip from the airport to the city centre is only 20 minutes. However, it’s through a Low Emission Zone, so if you plan to drive to the city centre from the airport, you should check your car meets the criteria.

Brussels has five main train stations serving the region which are all interlinked, and on top of that there are several international bus companies that provide quick bus transit between major European cities.

About BXL Tour

Take part in the 8th edition of the BXL TOUR on Sunday 16 June 2024! The 40km (or 32km) cycle race through the streets of the capital, a unique experience.

Last year’s event was a huge success, with a record 5370 participants!

This sports event is all about integration, inclusiveness and diversity. For many Brussels residents and other cyclists, this bike race through the streets of Brussels has become a must!

In addition to being an important lever for good physical and mental health, sport unifies, levels out disparities and brings people together.

It is therefore essential that it serve integration and citizen participation.

This initiative also shows the positive evolution of women’s sport in Brussels.

The Cyclo category is subdivided into 4 subcategories. Register according to your average speed:

Each participant must take notice of and comply with the  regulations .

Helmets must be worn . Participation will be refused if the participant isn’t wearing a helmet

Plate number with timing chip  attached to the front of the bike.

The course is entirely marked  and supervised by the organization with the help of the police, flagmen (fixed and mobile), race vehicles (green flag, red flag, broom truck, …). support vehicles, a race director, supervising staff and marshals…

Toilets, water fountains and technical stands  (minor repairs) will be available at the start and finish.

A free mobile locker service  will be available. You will be able to drop off your belongings in the departure area and pick them up in the arrival area (starting around 10:30 am)

• Electric bicycles (except for the  RIDE and PARACYCLE category )
• Tricycles and recumbent bikes (only for PARACYCLE)

Distance : 40km Average min. speed : 20km/h Ranking : based on UCI coefficient Start from Place des Palais at around 9.40am. To help us stage a mass start, please select the Handisport category only at the start of your registration.

Hand bikes, tricycles, reclining bikes and tandems are only allowed in this category for licensed persons with reduced mobility. Hand bikes must be equipped with a flag or pennant indicating their presence, attached to the end of a strong, flexible rod at least 1.5m above the ground. E-bikes are allowed but the bike’s assistance cannot exceed 25km/h.

GROUP REGISTRATION:

Want to participate with your friends or family? Register as a group and attempt to win the Lucien Group Challenge !

TThis group challenge (min. 5 persons per group) considers the time of the 5 fastest of each team. Team spirit will be very important! Attention, only the times of the Masters and Cyclos are counted.

By giving it your very best shot, you end up with 3 times that represent your effort: the individual, sprint and group time. Careful, this is only for Masters and Cyclos.

Moreover, groups (min. 5 persons) benefit from a reduced price. Group registrations finish on June 2nd at midnight.

PICK-UP NUMBERED PLATES:

All participants need a number plate to be fixed clearly to the front of the bike handlebars without bending it.

Masters must collect this essential item on the race day in the Parc de Bruxelles (at the start).

Groups , group leaders, can only collect their numbered plates between 10/06/24 and 14/06/24 at Brussels Major Events : Hôtel de Ville, Grand-Place, 1000 Brussels , from Monday till Friday from 9am till 5pm.

Participants who ordered a jersey when purchasing their ticket must go to the Brussels Info Place to collect their numbered plate and jersey between 16/05/24 and 15/06/24 with their e-ticket received via email a couple of weeks before the race: rue Royale 2 – 4, 1000 Brussels, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm.

Individual Cyclos and Rides , must collect their plates between 16/05/24 and 15/06/24 at the Lucien Pick-Up Points , on presentation of the e-ticket received by email a few weeks before the race.

The different Lucien Pick-Up Points are:

• Lucien in Brussels City : bd. Anspach 157, 1000 Brussels, from Tuesday till Saturday from 10am till 7pm, closed on Mondays and Sundays.
• Lucien at Ixelles : rue américaine 143, 1050 Ixelles, from Tuesday till Saturday from 10am till 6pm, closed on Mondays and Sundays.
• Lucien at W-S-P: Parvis Sainte-Alix 39, 1150 Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, from Tuesday till Friday from 10am till 1pm and from 2pm till 6.30pm, on Saturdays from 10am till 1pm and from 2pm till 6pm, closed on Mondays and Sundays.

Baloise Sprint: A 1.5km sprint is installed in front of the castle of Laeken. The timings of the Masters and Cyclos are regrouped in one list.

Group classification: From 5 persons onwards you can register as a group for the BXL TOUR. The 5 best timings of your group will be accumulated and will define your group time. One list is made with all the groups.

Brussels women cyclists

For the fifth year in a row and with the aim of supporting women’s sports, this project brings together women from Brussels to learn how to cycle. The aim is to get them involved in the preparation of the  BXL TOUR  and to participate and finish the race.

This enriching and fun experience also allows them to familiarise themselves with this growing means of active mobility.

Various Brussels associations active in the field of cycling provide the training programme, which gives the participants the theoretical and practical means to cross the finishing line!

THE PHASES OF THE PROGRAMME

• Supervised sports trainings to learn to ride a bike in the city.

The BXL TOUR - A sporty pint

This year, the BXL TOUR has its own beer, brewed with love especially for you, in collaboration with the Brussels brewery Drink Drink!

This IPA (Indian Pale Ale) is a light beer (4.2%) of high fermentation, organically grown and composed of malt, barley, hops, yeast, and G water.

Drink-Drink is a project of three Brussels residents who met at school and decided to merge two of their common passions: beer and cycling.

You will soon be able to discover the beautiful label of the BXL TOUR on our social media.

The BXL TOUR will be the ideal way to cool off after the race!

Starting 10 April, you can find the BXL TOUR on “My beer box” and at the following places: Malt Attack, La Perruche, Amère à boire, Pédalo, Belgopop, Épicerie Horta, Bloum, Chez Marie, Smala, Comptoir Belge, Made in Anderlecht, Wandercoop, Walvis, Le Gist, Fernand Obb and Dekkera.

BALOISE BELGIUM TOUR ​

This year the BXL TOUR collaborates with the BALOISE BELGIUM TOUR!

For the first time the five-day UCI ProSeries cycling race through Belgium will end with a stage in and around Brussels. The finish will be under the Atomium, same as the BXL TOUR .

The collaboration between these 2 great events will be the occasion for amateurs, semi-professionals, and the greatest champions of the world to meet at the finish village for the award ceremony.

18 June will be dedicated to bicycle lovers, a festive day in our capital, for the participants as well as spectators!

INTERSPORT GROUP CHALLENGE 

To make the race even more attractive, starting this year there is the INTERSPORT GROUP CHALLENGE ! Register as a team and compete together for the team prize! The ranking is calculated based on the time of the 5 fastest riders of your team.

To make the race even more exciting, there’sl also the “BALOISE SPRINT”, a 1500m sprint segment on the Avenue du Parc Royal, between the Parvis Notre Dame and the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken.

In addition to these two prizes, all cyclists in the Master or Cyclo category will be automatically timed individually for the general classification . You will thus have the opportunity to qualify 3 times. As a team or solo, it’s up to you to take on your own challenge!

For the third consecutive year, the trophies of the BXL TOUR are made from the wood of the splendid Christmas tree of the Grand Place.

In a permanent concern for sustainability, this wood is reused to produce and give life to different objects such as boards of swings, furniture for the City’s events or the Bxl Tour trophies!

The base of the trophy is an A4 board made of fir wood on which a visual created by the Brussels collective Louves ( www.louves.be ) is laser printed in color.

Each trophy includes the category for which the participant wins the prize and is signed by the godfather of the race, our dear Eddy Merckx!

BXL TOUR CHALLENGE

For World Bicycle Day on Saturday 3rd of June, the BXL TOUR and Westland Shopping are putting out a challenge to cyclists from all over Brussels!

Are you ready for the BXL TOUR? Come and prove it and try to win  a free ticket for the race and lots of other prizes. Show us that you’re the best in your category or simply come and test your legs on Intersport’s home-trainers!

For the home-trainer competition, three categories will be able to take part: young people aged 12-18 / men / women. 200 BXL TOUR caps will be given to the first participants and five winners per category will receive a surprise gift pack (BXL TOUR ticket, Westland Shopping gift card, etc.).    For the curious ones out there, there will also be a BMX demonstration, a bike repair stand, a BMX and bike initiation course, DJ entertainment and a BXL TOUR info point.

CYCLOPARKING

A secure bike park will be available free of charge from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm (code system to be received by SMS to access the car park), so that you can enjoy the finish village entertainment (concert, circus arts, etc.) throughout the afternoon.

Follow the steps below to access it:

• A photo (of the bike and your shoes) is taken by one of the bike park attendants at the entrance to the bike park.
• You give the attendant your mobile phone number
• Your mobile phone number is linked to your photo.
• You place your bike in the bike park.
• You will receive a confirmation SMS from the bike park with a code and the closing time of the bike park.
• Collect your bike before the bike park closes.
• Tell the attendant your code.
• The attendant checks the code and asks a question about your bike (colour/brand, etc.).
• If you answer correctly, you get your bike back.

Easy cycling trip on relatively flat terrain, some stages will have a more winding character but still suitable for people with little or no cycling experience. Daily cycling distances span roughly 30-70 km.

Follow the Flemish Masters on a linear cycling tour to the most beautiful towns in Belgium, admiring the grand painters’ artwork in Brussels, St. Bavo Cathedral in Ghent, KMKSA and Rubens’ House in Antwerp, St. John’s Church in Mechelen and Groeninge Museum in Bruges.

In between, you’ll ride through ever-changing landscapes, with riverside stretches and sign-posted routes.

Arrange for an early arrival and take a moment to settle in, then head for the Grande Place. Meet the Manneken Pis, munch on waffles and chocolate and quench your thirst with a pint. It all comes together in Brussels, a city created specifically for culture vultures and shopaholics, gourmets and gourmands alike!

Take time to see a bit more of the Grande Place, then set off for Tervuren, known for the Royal Aftica Museum. Rolling along tree-lined country lanes, you pedal past ponds and parallel the river. Woodlands, meadows and farmed fields lead to Mechelen, one of the smaller Flemish towns, yet large on beauty.

Stop in Sint-Kathelijne-Waver for an exquisite surprise. The convent-school of Our Lady of Wavre sports a successful blend of architectural styles: art nouveau, neo-Gothic, neo-Empire and art deco. Plus the wonderful winter garden, an ode to nature, springtime and light! Cycle onward via Duffel, situated on the River Nete. Pause for a bit of military heritage at Mortsel’s 19th-century brick-and-sandstone Fort no. 4. Crown your day in Antwerp with a wander around the city. Shop for antiques or vintage fashion finds and drink in the traditional brews, whether coffee or beer!

Let the River Scheldt lead you to an encounter with the 10 th -century Wissekerk Castle near Kruibeke. Further ahead, ford the river by ferry and pedal along the dike to De Zilverreiger, the regional museum depicting local trades and crafts, such as basket weaving, river fishery, cooperage (barrel making), flax processing and clog making.

Back on the banks of the Scheldt, cruise past a string of Flemish sites. Take a break in Dendermonde, with its town hall, belfry and church with an 11 th -century baptismal font. Linger at Laarne Castle then continue on to Ghent, a veritable open-air museum and UNESCO Creative City of Music. The thriving local scene includes concerts, festivals, a carillon and singing in the streets… music is absolutely everywhere.  After dark, Ghent glows with a magical ambience thanks to its ingenious lighting plan.

Head west into rural Meetjesland, a cyclist’s paradise of woodlands, meadows and farmed fields. Enjoy easy pedalling across flat landscapes, and stretch your legs with a stroll round the sculptures in Eeklo. The Het Leen and Drongengoed forests await. If you have extra energy at the end, take a sign-posted walk among the heather in Maldegemveld nature reserve.

Cut across the flat Flemish countryside and glide through quiet villages such as Knesselare, Maria-Aalter and Moerbrugge. On the last stretch, marvel at one of Belgium’s oldest waterways, the 14 th -century Ghent-Bruges canal. This green corridor together with its towpath verges provide habitat vital to preserving biodiversity. Top off the week with an evening in Bruges, a Belgian jewel of  medieval facades,  cobbled lanes and a fairy-tale atmosphere.  

After breakfast this morning, your holiday comes to an end and it’s time to return home.

Hybrid bikes

Our hybrid bikes are aluminum bikes and have 27-gears

Weight: circa 16,5 kilo

The e-bikes are Freebike Harlem or similar. The bikes have a small electric engine and battery, which can be charged at the hotels. You still have to pedal: it just makes pedaling much easier. Some experience with e-bikes is recommended, as the bikes accelerate faster and are heavier than regular bikes because of the electric engine.

Child bikes

For children who are at least 125 cm, we can also arrange bikes (these are 24”or 26” for children that are bigger than 140 cm). The bikes are Oxford Kick-Off bikes or similar, we also use child mountainbikes as child bike.

The maximum body height for a child’s bike is 155 cm. 

Accessories

All our rental bikes come with a bell.

All our adult bikes come with hand brakes. 

For children up to 30 months old (max. 15 KG) it is possible to rent a front child seat. This is not possible with e-bikes, due to the display.

For children older than 30 months (max. 22KG) it is possible to rent a rear child seat. This is also possible with e-bikes.

Helmets are not mandatory in Belgium, but can be rented for €15,- per piece.| Available sizes: Adult: 54-61cm, Child: 50-55cm. 

All our bikes come with both front- and rear lights. You need to push the button on the lamp and it will flash three times. This means that the lights will automatically start working when it gets dark. 

When you push again, the lamp will flash one time and the lights will be turned off.

Our bikes come with a defender lock with plug in chain (cable lock that is attached to the regular lock, see picture).

You need to turn the key a bit, take out the pin from the cable lock and attach it to a pole/other bike/fence etc.

When you push the pin back into the regular lock, you need to lock the regular lock as you always do, and both locks will be secured.

1 pannier is included at the 'standard' bikes and the e-bikes.

Height: 42 cm Depth front to the side: 17 cm Wide top: 32 cm Wide down: 23 cm Volume: 20 liters It has an easy click-on/click-off system. The panniers are water resistant, so everything will stay dry.

The rental bikes come with regular pedals, so no click-in/SPD pedals. 

All our bikes come with a quick release system, which makes it very easy to adjust the height of the saddle and the handle bars. 

There is one small puncture kit included, which can be found in the pannier. In case a rental bike has another problem, we always advise you to go to a bike repair shop or call the bike breakdown emergency number which is provided in the travel documents when you book this extra service.

Saddles can be adjusted in height without using any tools, see ‘Quick Release’. Our saddles don’t come with a gel cover. 

Dutch Biketours does not provide water bottles. We can also not guarantee that there are bottle holders on the bikes. You will always receive 1x pannier, so you can always store your water bottle in your pannier.

Tandem bike

We have a limited amount of tandem bikes available on request. The tandem bikes are steel Victoria Special 8.7 or similar. Tandem bikes are suitable for two adults only.

Family Tandem

Tag-along bike

A tag-along bike is a good option for children between approx. 100 cm and 125 cm, as they can pedal themselves and on their own pace but don’t have to worry about other traffic.

Child trailer

Child trailers can be rented for a maximum of two children who are up to 100 cm (max. 35 KG in total). 

We mostly use the XLC Duo 2 child trailer. Child trailers are not possible in combination with e-bikes.  

Bike Breakdown Pass

Mile after wonderful mile of untroubled cycling is what we would wish our clients. However there is a minimal chance of breakdown along the way. If this thought is a nagging worry to you, a Bicycle Breakdown Assistance insurance policy may ease your mind. If you buy this insurance from our partner FietsNED in advance, their service is as follows. If your bike breaks down by the roadside a FietsNED bicycle repair man will drive to you in his repair van and fix your bike so you can continue your tour.You won’t have to pay him repair costs. If you are cycling on your own bicycle you will be charged for any new spare parts your bike may require. If you are renting a bicycle through Dutch Bike Tours any new parts are at our expense. If it turns out the bicycle cannot be repaired on the spot, or if you don’t wish to continue cycling, the repairman can drop you off somewhere in his van. One companion plus bikes may join you in the van.

The Bike Breakdown Pass is €2,75 per day per bike and can only be booked for every participant in a booking. 

Bike Theft Insurances

Do you wish to insure your bike against theft? The cost is € 3,- per day per standard hybrid bicycle. For an electric bicycle, premium bike or racing bike: € 6,00 per day per bicycle. Please see the General Terms and Conditions for Bicycle Hire and Insurance. 

If a rental bike gets stolen or damaged, we will hold the client responsible. If your insurance does not cover this event, you will have to pay the costs yourself.

General Terms and Conditions

Article 1 Bike Rental Price

The bike rental price is determined by the rates mentioned on the Dutch Bike Tours website at the time of the booking; or as subsequently agreed.

Article 2 Payment

a. The rental price and any other due sums regarding the rental agreement must be paid before the bike is handed over to you.

b. If, for whatever reason, you cannot make use of the bike(s) you have rented, Dutch Bike Tours will not be held responsible for any resulting expenses or damage.

c. In the case of the article 2b, the client remains obliged to pay the full rental price and any other amounts mentioned in the invoice, in accordance with our General Terms and Conditions of Booking, unless the client can prove that his not being able to use the bike was the consequence of a defect that was already present at the beginning of the rental period.

Article 3 Rental Period

a. The rental period runs from the morning of the first cycling day (day 2) to the end of the holiday (the departure day), as stated in the booking confirmation.

b. Extension of the rental period is possible only after approval by us and according to the (extension) rates as mentioned in article 1.

c. No refunds are possible after the rental period begins. If you return the bike(s) to us before the end of your holiday, the rental agreement will automatically be terminated and you will not get any of your money back.

d. At the end of the last cycling day of your holiday, the bike(s) must be returned to the hotel from where it was/they were issued, no later than the time stated in the booking confirmation. If you book a one way tour tour you can leave the bike at the last hotel of the trip. 

e. If the bike(s) is /are not returned by the return time stated in the booking confirmation, we will continue to charge you rent until such time as the bike(s) is/are returned to us or is/are received by us. In the event of late return, the rates as mentioned in article 1 will continue to apply, plus a fine of €25 per day. We also reserve the right to demand payment for any costs and/or damages suffered by us due to late return of our rental bike(s).

f. Notwithstanding the preceding paragraph, in the event of late return of our rental bikes, we reserve the right to dissolve the rental agreement without judicial intervention and immediately claim back our bicycles where ever they may be and from whomever has them. Dutch Bike Tours also holds this right in the event that the client does not comply with any of the other conditions stated in this rental agreement.

Article 4 Improper Use

a. The bicycle(s) may only be used for its/their intended purpose and only by the cyclists listed in the rental agreement.

b. The bike(s) must be returned to us in the same (clean!) state in which you received it/them.

c. You must take excellent care of the bicycle(s), as if it/they were your own. You must take every precaution against damage, loss or theft.

d. The bicycle may not be used on the beach; or on sandy paths in the dunes unless a paved path is unavailable.

Article 5 Damage, Loss and Theft

The renter will be held responsible for damages to or loss of the bicycle(s) or parts of it, as well as bicycle keys and chains and locks, for such an amount as is determined by us according to standard market prices. You must understand that you are not insured for damage to the bicycle(s) or for any damages to third parties.

Article 6 Theft Insurance

It is possible to purchase Bicycle Theft Insurance. Covered are: damages arising out of the theft of the bicycle; and damages to the bicycle as a consequence of the theft. Not covered are: theft of bicycle parts; and damages arising out of attempted theft.

Article 7 Theft Insurance Premium

a. The premium for Bicycle Theft Insurance is € 3,00 per day per standard hybrid bicycle. For an electric bicycle € 6,00 per day as well for a Premium bike and racing bike.

The number of insurance days is the same as the number of cycling days as stated in our booking confirmation.

Article 8 Liability in the Event of Theft

a. If you did not purchase Bicycle Theft Insurance from us before the start of the holiday, you will be held fully accountable for the sum determined by us according to standard prices.

b. If you did purchase Bicycle Theft Insurance from us, but you failed to lock the wheel lock and failed to produce the original wheel lock key and failed to produce an official theft report drawn up by the police, you will still be held fully accountable for the sum determined by us according to standard prices.

Article 9 Costs During the Rental Period

Any charges and taxes regarding the rental bicycle(s), such as fines and ferry tickets, are to be paid by you. You will also be required to pay all costs ensuing from the use of the bicycle(s) such as parking fees, maintenance and repairs.

We loved the trip. Flawless organization, great accomdations, and a well though route through great cities, lovely villages, and bordering rivers, canals (the ferry transfer was a nice touch), and fields. Once you get your stride, it is very liberating to know Belgium at your own pace, covering a lot of ground and relaxing at the same time. Belgium is a dense country so it is just perfect for this kind of trip. In a matter of minutes the landscape changes from medieval village to canal to horse farms to park. Congratulations for the organization, and thank you a lot!

Day 1: Individual arrival in Amsterdam

Your bike tour to Brussels begins in lively Amsterdam, the cycling city par excellence. As soon as you arrive, take a walk to the Royal Palace and Oude Kerk, the oldest building in the city. For culture enthusiasts, a visit to the Museumplein with the Rijksmuseum is well worthwhile. Or how about a boat tour along the beautiful canals? Afterwards, enjoy the hearty Dutch cuisine in one of the many cozy restaurants.

Day 2: Amsterdam – Gouda, approx. 70 km

The first cycling stage takes you into the Green Heart of the Netherlands. You cycle through the natural area characterized by lakes and moors as well as peat and polder landscapes to Gouda. The small town is famous for the cheese of the same name and also for its delicious s troopwafels , which you absolutely must try. Discover idyllic courtyards, historic facades and the famous cheese market on a stroll through the old town.

Day 3: Gouda – Papendrecht, approx. 50 km

Today, a special highlight awaits you on your bike tour from Amsterdam to Brussels. A total of 19 historic windmills tower up into the sky in Kinderdijk. They date back to the 18th century and were once used to pump water from the surrounding polders. Visit one of the museum windmills and find out more about how they worked and how people once lived in the mills. The route continues through a picturesque landscape to Papendrecht.

Day 4: Papendrecht – Bergen op Zoom, approx. 70 km

First you cycle to Dordrecht. Stroll through the harbour district, whose historic buildings bring the spirit of past centuries to life. On you go! You will soon reach De Biesbosch National Park. It is one of the few freshwater tidal areas in the world. Here you can observe numerous bird species and the work of the many resident beavers, who have built hundreds of castles in the water. Your destination today is Bergen op Zoom. Explore the city, whose former wealth is still visible today in many monuments and squares.

Day 5: Bergen op Zoom – Antwerp, approx. 60 km

The Kalmthoutse Heide nature reserve is the first destination on your bike tour from Amsterdam to Brussels today. You cycle through a varied heathland area with moors and large coniferous forests. Stop and listen to the numerous species of woodpecker tapping on the trees. Along the Scheldt you reach the historic heart of Antwerp. Not only numerous sights await you, but also typical Belgian delicacies such as chocolates and a variety of beers.

Day 6: Antwerp – Leuven, approx. 70 km

Before you continue cycling, take another stroll through the diamond city of Antwerp. Marvel at the artist's originals in the Rubenshuis and numerous works of art and a wonderful view of the city in the Museum aan de Stroom. Along the rivers Schelde, Rupel and Dijle, you will reach the university city of Leuven. Start your tour at the old university, walk to the Gothic town hall and end it at Oude Markt. Here you will find plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy the evening with moules frites and a Belgian beer.

Day 7: Leuven – Brussels, approx. 40 km

Bit by bit, you approach the hustle and bustle of the big city. Your destination, Brussels, welcomes you with love and variety. Set off on a tour of the city and marvel at the Grand-Place with its magnificently decorated houses, baroque facades and gables. Nearby you will find the symbol of Brussels, the bronze statue of Manneken Pis. Did you know that it is dressed up for special occasions? Just outside the city center is the Atomium. From the top sphere of the building, you have a wonderful view of Brussels.

Day 8: Individual departure

Your bike tour from Amsterdam to Brussels ends after breakfast. We are happy to extend your stay in Amsterdam or Brussels with an extra night.

Brussels to create new walking and cycling path to Tour & Taxi Park

The City of Brussels will create an additional lane giving easier access to the Tour & Taxis Pak for pedestrians and cyclists – who now have to go all the way around – by opening up their sites to open the park from the Rue Dieudonné Lefèvre in the north.

The gate between the BE-HERE business centre and the postal sorting centre will be opened by the Port daily between 06:00 to 19:00, giving walkers and cyclists going to and coming from the Tivoli neighbourhood easier access to the park and the Avenue Anna Boch.

"This agreement was much needed. Tour & Taxis Park has many access roads but the connection to the Tivoli neighbourhood was still non-existent," said Brussels City Councillor for Urban Planning and Public Spaces Anaïs Maes (Vooruit.brussels).

This way, soft mobility between Laeken and the city centre will get an upgrade. In the future, the temporary cycle path will be replaced by the construction of the Drève Maritime – which will be the third public road through this emerging urban neighbourhood alongside Drève du Parc and Avenue Anna Boch.

"Today, people still have to make a long diversion to enter the park even though they actually live right next to it," Maes stressed. "It took some effort and time but I am delighted to have a deal in hand today that all parties can agree on."

Now that the agreement has been validated by both the Port and the City Council of the City of Brussels, the Public Works departments can get to work on the implementation of the cycle path. The works are scheduled for the end of this summer.

"The parents in the neighbourhood have long been looking forward to a safe bicycle connection that will bring them and their children to the school gate via T&T park," said Brussels City Councillor for Mobility and Public Works Bart Dhondt.

"In anticipation of a final reconstruction, we will now realise this safe connection in the short term," he added.

Remco Evenepoel's Tour de France ambitions back on track after high-speed Itzulia crash

T hree weeks on from fracturing collarbone and scapula at Itzulia Basque Country, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) is back in training in preparation for his debut at the Tour de France . 

The Belgian star posted the first activity to his Strava account since the horrific crash, which also left two-time defending Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) with a pneumothorax, broken collarbone and ribs.

“On my way back,” Evenepoel titled a 98.7km ride near into Flanders from home to the west of Brussels. 

Evenepoel's injuries are not as severe as Vingegaard, who only got out of hospital in Spain last week. He was swiftly back in Belgium for collarbone surgery and recovered quickly, convinced that he can still be ready for the Tour de France Grand Depart on June 29.

The ambitious, but realistic 24-year-old, stated earlier this season that reaching the Tour de France podium in Nice at the end of July "would be a dream come true".

Evenepoel enjoyed a final day of recovery with a trip to Britain to see Arsenal football match in London. The time trial World Champion then completed a near-three hour 98.75km ride around Schepdaal, where he grew up, at a solid average speed of 34.7km/h. 

The next step on the “#RoadToFrance” as his caption read will see him head to Sierra Nevada for an altitude camp with Soudal-QuickStep. Following this, he will be off to either the Critérium du Dauphiné or Tour de Suisse, depending on fitness, to regain his race rhythm and punch before the Tour kicks off in Florence.

Vingegaard in contrast has been ruled out of attending Visma-Lease a Bike’s upcoming training camp with an appearance at the Tour still in doubt unless he is at his best according to the Dutch team.

If the Dane is to miss out, Evenepoel and Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe), who also crashed out of Itzulia but without any fractures, would become the top contenders to challenge the former two-time Tour winner Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).

Evenepoel’s compatriot Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) has similarly been making a return to riding on the road since crashing out of Dwars door Vlaanderen in March. The Belgian pair share the same physiotherapist who has overseen their returns to fitness.

Thijs Hertsens from LAB Antwerp is the man looking after the superstars in Belgium and his work hasn’t gone unnoticed with both men returning to the road this week. 

Van Aert was shown on video turning the pedals for the first time since his high-speed crash on Wednesday.

"After working a lot on his mobility, he [Evenepoel] is already back on track,” Hertsens told Sporza earlier this week, clearly aware of how close Evenepoel was to getting back out on the road.

Van Aert has worked with the physiotherapist since his awful crash at the 2019 Tour de France and Evenepoel since his horror incident at the 2020 Il Lombardia.

"Cyclists are hard workers by nature, so it is very pleasant to guide them,” said Hertsens.

Van Aert's goals have been derailed due to his crash but he will switch focus to the Paris Olympics where he and Evenepoel will lead a top-level Belgian team that will want to claim both the road race and the time trial.
