What is the line? Princess Cruises

Name of ship? Discovery Princess

Passenger occupancy? 3,660

Itinerary? Vancouver to Los Angeles

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Princess may be most famous for starring in “The Love Boat,” the iconic television show that was set on one of its ships, but it’s also known for its great Alaska cruises, a variety of delicious food, and relatively affordable prices.

Tell us about the ship in general.

This mega-ship feels like a floating city built around a magnificent atrium instead of a town square. With 1,830 staterooms, a dozen dining options, 10 hot tubs, and an expansive gym, this is a big ship that feels like it. And despite the chandeliers and soaring atrium, the vibe on board is casual. You won’t find any amusement park rides, waterslides, or go-kart tracks here, but there’s still plenty to do on this ship that began sailing in March 2022.

Who is onboard?

I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of passengers on my October sailing. I found myself traveling with retirees, multi-generational families, and travelers from a variety of countries. A large percentage of passengers were Canadian, which makes sense as the ship departed from Vancouver. There were also a surprising number of children on board considering it was early October when most kids are typically in school.

Describe the cabins.

The Discovery Princess’ 1,830 staterooms include two luxurious sky suites and hundreds of balcony rooms and mini-suites. I stayed in a Deluxe Balcony cabin, an approximately 250-square-foot space with a shower, a small sitting area, and desk. Next time, I’ll opt for the slightly larger mini-suite which has a full-sized couch instead of a loveseat and a more spacious desk. The decor is simple, especially in the bathroom, but there are a few signs of shipbuilder Fincantieri’s stylish Italian roots.

Tell us about the crew.

Generally, the staff I interacted with were helpful and friendly (consistent with my first Princess sailing from years ago). However, at certain times onboard, I had trouble tracking down crew members to help assist me with onboard tasks like locating a pool towel or deciphering the details of my food and beverage package.

What food and drink options are available on board?

You’re guaranteed not to go hungry on this ship. An international buffet and meals in the main dining room are included with cruise fares. A 24-hour cafe, a grill, a New York slice shop, a crêperie, and afternoon tea are also included in the ship’s complimentary dining plan. There are eight specialty restaurants that cost extra to access, including one with a menu designed by Michelin-star chef Emmanuel Renaut. The best dining option on board, however, is the 360 experience. Guests are greeted with a custom cocktail and escorted to their seats around a circular table in a private room for a multi-course, multi-sensory dining experience complete with music and interactive visuals. If you have to pick between a specialty dining package and this dinner, choose the 360 dinner. It’s well worth $149, and I am still daydreaming about the lemon pasta I had that night.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

There is a spa and a small thermal suite on board the Discovery Princess as well as a premium, adults-only Sanctuary sun deck where guests can get massages in private outdoor cabanas.

How about the activities and entertainment?

There may not be a zipline, laser tag, or mega slide on board, but this ship doesn’t need any of that. The Discovery Princess has four swimming pools, 10 hot tubs, and several bars and lounges. Princess also employs some of the best performers in the business, and you’ll find them putting on Broadway-caliber shows or dancing through the atrium. Is a movie more your speed? Catch a flick under the stars on Princess’ giant outdoor screen. The onboard casino is one of the most lively places on the ship, and there are lots of shops onboard to spend your winnings.

How was the experience for families?

While there’s no onboard amusement park, there are several spaces for kids to hang out and lots of family-friendly cabins. There’s a treehouse playroom for children between three and seven, and at Camp Discovery, kids between eight and 12 can participate in activities like rocket building and model roller coaster construction. There’s also a separate space for teenagers to hang out, take dance classes, or play in video game tournaments. There’s even a teen party night on board complete with mocktails.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

I sailed from Vancouver to Victoria, Canada, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. While the excursions were priced on the higher end of the spectrum, they offered a wide variety of options for people at all mobility levels, including city tours and trips to wine country. I opted for independent excursions on my own, which this itinerary makes especially easy. The ship departs from downtown Vancouver, ports within walking distance of downtown Victoria, B.C., and pulls into the heart of San Francisco before ending at the Port of Los Angeles.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

The Discovery Princess has a dedicated environmental officer to manage onboard sustainability efforts. Engines and propellers are designed to consume less fuel. The ship also composts food waste and has reduced its reliance on single-use plastics.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

It’s hard to eat better on a cruise than this, especially if you’re a vegetarian or prefer Asian cuisine. Plus, you’re able to sail the same itineraries as more expensive cruise lines at a fraction of the price.

First impressions of Princess Cruises' newest ship, Discovery Princess

Ashley Kosciolek

This week, I'm sailing on Princess Cruises' newest vessel, Discovery Princess, the sixth and final ship in the line's Royal Class . To be frank, there isn't much that sets it apart from the first five, but that isn't necessarily a flaw.

Here, I'll talk about the minor details that differentiate it, why it's not a bad thing that Discovery Princess is familiar, what the ship does (and doesn't) do well, and what the heck is up with OceanMedallion.

First impressions

From what I've been told by the line, Princess passengers prefer predictability. They sail with the brand because they want an affordable larger-ship experience without flashy amenities like roller coasters and surf simulators. With that in mind, the line's new vessels don't strive to set themselves apart. Rather, they aim to provide a reliable sense of familiarity.

Discovery Princess is largely identical to Sky Princess and Enchanted Princess. The only differences you're likely to spot are slight variations in decor and color scheme throughout, but especially in the cabins, where lighter carpeting makes the rooms feel larger. The Crown Grill Bar has also been slightly redesigned. (I adore the brass compass motif on the bar itself.)

It's also the second ship in its class to have the fashion-meets-rock "Rock Opera" production show and a dedicated Salty Dog Gastropub, which serves out-of-this-world small plates.

Additionally, the ship has a new production show, "Spotlight Bar." It takes place in a bar setting with "locals" singing songs about their lives. The list of song titles includes works from well-known artists like Stevie Wonder, Justin Timberlake and George Michael, among others.

Discovery Princess is big but manageable. On my voyage, we're sailing with 2,247 passengers, just 61% of capacity. Even so, the main areas — especially the theater, Piazza and buffet — feel crowded more often than they don't, particularly at peak times.

The vessel is elegantly appointed, but it's oddly loud. (For example, I had trouble finding a quiet place to write this, so I just stayed in my cabin.)

Additionally, it feels difficult to navigate at times, with some of the lower decks featuring dead ends that force passengers to go up a deck or two, over and back down to reach their destination. And, despite having sailed on Majestic Princess just a few months ago, I still found myself lost on the way to the spa. (On these ships, the spa is on Deck 5, while the fitness center, which is often coupled with the spa on other cruise ships, is on Deck 17.) Signage on certain decks lacks some venues, which is confusing.

The food has been iffy. Everything I ate at the extra-fee Crown Grill steakhouse and Salty Dog was fantastic. However, while the buffet situation has largely improved since I sailed on Majestic Princess, some fare just looks and tastes like it's been sitting under a heat lamp all day.

The main dining room was also hit-or-miss. On one night, the pea soup looked like it didn't contain a single pea (it was red in color), and the "Mexican salad" was nothing more than flavorless iceberg lettuce with some corn and strips of tortilla. During another visit, however, the tamarind-glazed mahi-mahi stood out -- in a good way.

Service has been generally great throughout, with excellent waitstaff in the restaurants, main dining room and buffet; fabulous attention to detail among the housekeeping crew; and brilliant service in the spa. Although guest services staff were wonderful on the first day of the sailing when I had issues checking in, yesterday a travel companion was initially ignored and then told to go to the end of the line (despite having just waited in it) when he went there with a question.

Hits and misses

discovery princess cruise ship wiki

For-fee food: The ship's complimentary dining — main dining room and buffet — has been squarely mediocre (with the exception of the free pizza I snagged from both Slice and Gi-Gi's, which was some of the best I've tasted at sea). On the other hand, all of the meals that levy an extra charge have been superb.

The filet mignon I ordered at the Crown Grill steakhouse was cooked to perfection. Salty Dog's SDG burger and halloumi with asparagus are two of my new favorite dishes, and the gelateria next door to Salty Dog had some of the best pistachio scoops I've ever tasted.

Wi-Fi: Compared to other cruise ships, the Wi-Fi connection on Discovery Princess is stellar. Yesterday, while at sea, I was able to do a video call on my laptop with someone back home, and it was nearly flawless. It's also fairly affordable, with one device costing $9.99 per day for unlimited access. (On my voyage, I was able to upgrade to a four-device package for an extra $50 for the entire sailing.)

discovery princess cruise ship wiki

Blankets: Discovery Princess is currently sailing from Los Angeles to Vancouver, and the weather has been chilly, cloudy and windy with rough seas, which has made it difficult to enjoy many of the outer decks. Fortunately, the ship has a huge supply of buffalo check fleece blankets for passengers to borrow for use outdoors. It's one small touch that has meant a lot, and it will serve the vessel well when it begins its Alaska season from Seattle at the end of this voyage.

OceanMedallion: The major offering that sets Princess Cruises apart from other cruise lines is its OceanMedallion technology. In some ways, it's great and makes my life easier. It's convenient for opening my cabin door when my hands are full, and although I haven't yet been able to try its shoreside shopping capabilities, the onboard ones are genius.

On the first night of our sailing, a travel companion saw a jacket he wanted in one of the ship's stores, but they didn't have his size. The Medallion allowed the shop's sales team to call him when a new shipment was received. Then, when he went to the shop to pick it up, he was told he could save $10 by ordering via the Medallion App, which he did.

The functionality also allows cruisers to order from the onboard shops and have items delivered to wherever they are on board. If you're cold on deck and don't want a blanket, you can purchase a sweatshirt or jacket, which will be delivered to you and charged to your onboard account.

discovery princess cruise ship wiki

Traffic flow: Even at 61% percent capacity, the ship still feels crowded, especially on sea days when everyone is looking for things to do. Yesterday I spent nearly 10 minutes wandering around the buffet at lunchtime trying to find a seat, and the day before I snagged the very last table at Princess Live for afternoon trivia.

Creating further frustration are the dead ends and erroneous signage in some areas. The location of the Skagway dining room, which is on Deck 6, midship, is a bit of an annoyance. Passengers trying to walk directly from the front to the back of the ship — or vice-versa — on Deck 6 will find it impossible, as Skagway blocks the path. They'll have to go up one deck, walk across and head back down.

As mentioned, I also lost my way when trying to find the Lotus Spa because some signage omits key venues. (Note that Deck 5 venues, including the Ketchikan dining room and spa, are completely missing from the photo above.)

OceanMedallion: You might be wondering why I'm listing OceanMedallion as both a hit and a miss. While the functionality is marvelous in some ways, it's cumbersome in others.

I was able to check in via the app pre-cruise, but after I boarded, I was unable to access my cabin. When I went to guest services to have it fixed, much of the information I had entered prior to boarding was lost in the app. Then, after watching the required muster drill video in my cabin three times, it still didn't register that I had seen it. I had to call the front desk to report it.

discovery princess cruise ship wiki

Crew members have been pushing the OceanMedallion hard, whether it's the Medallions themselves or the app on which many of the Medallion's services operate. When I was at the desk to remedy the check-in situation, I asked for a cruise card instead of a Medallion and was told "We'd prefer if you try the Medallion." After explaining that I had tried it on a previous cruise, the response was "But have you tried it on Discovery Princess?"

I was asked for a reason why I didn't like it, which seemed a bit intrusive, but the fact is that it's glitchy, and I don't want to have to spend unnecessary time trying to make it work when a keycard — which I also like to keep as a souvenir from each of my sailings — works just fine for me.

Eventually, I was given the card I asked for, but here's what I've found with regard to the app: it works for me to check my onboard bill but not to view the daily schedule, restaurant menus or any of my reservations for the spa or specialty dining. I was also unable to access the "Dine My Way" part of the app, which allows passengers to choose their dining time and whether or not they want the same time each night.

My travel companions — who, when trying to use the app, kept receiving messages that their reservation didn't exist — were finally able to get the app to function on day four after visiting the help desk. But the fact is that it's not a seamless experience if passengers have to frequently visit a help desk or guest services to make it work for them.

Bottom line

discovery princess cruise ship wiki

Discovery Princess is elegant and modern, and it's great for cruisers who prefer to fill their days with trivia, live music, arts and crafts, and movies instead of active pursuits. It's also perfect for passengers who have already been acquainted with other vessels in Princess' Royal Class but who perhaps want a different itinerary or a slightly newer experience.

Entertainment is good but not great, service varies from venue to venue, and it's rare that free food outshines the cuisine for which passengers must pay extra.

The line hangs its hat heavily on the OceanMedallion. While its tech is impressive and its functions are helpful in some ways, there's still a lot of work to be done before it's truly seamless — especially for people who don't have the latest devices or software.

Overall, it has been an enjoyable experience, but it's not one that markedly stands out.

Princess Cruises Discovery Princess cruise ship

The Princess Cruises Discovery Princess is a fairly new ship, being built in 2022. It's considered a medium size ship. Coming in at 1,083 ft long and 126 ft wide, it's roughly the length of 3 football fields, as wide as 2.4 tractor trailers, and the same height as a 19-story building.

Discovery Princess Size and Passengers

The Discovery Princess can hold 3,660 based on double occupancy (two people per room) and more when you take into account 3rd and 4th passengers. When you compare the total tonnage of the ship to the number of passengers, the Discovery Princess has a space ratio of 40. Depending on the ship, this number can range from 30 to 52 (with a bigger number meaning more space per person) so this ship's space-to-person ratio is about average.

The Discovery Princess is one of six Royal-class ships currently sailing with Princess Cruises. Royal-class ships are known for the Seawalk. This 60 feet long glass walkway is cantilevered over the side of the ship, 128 feet above the ocean. On the other side of the ship, you can stop by a bar with a glass floor. The Discovery Princess is very similar to its sister-ships; Royal Princess, Regal Princess, Majestic Princess, Sky Princess and Enchanted Princess, although each ship may have some differences.

Discovery Princess Food and Restaurants

Main Dining Room on the Princess Cruises Discovery Princess

Food is a big part of any cruise, and there will plenty on the Princess Cruises Discovery Princess. You have 14 different dining options to choose from. Of those options, 6 are complementary, or included with your cruise fare. The other 8 options have an additional fee. Some of those options are a set price and some have a la cart menu pricing. Only 43% of the dining options are included meaning you might spend more while on the ship due to the additional fees.

In terms of drinks and cocktails, you have a variety of choices. Princess Cruises serves the Coca-cola family of products. That means Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Barqs Root Beer, although the selection can vary by ship.

There are also plenty of bars available on this ship. Alcohol is not included in the base price of this cruise ship. To see if you would save money with a drink package, try our Drink Package Calculator.

Pools and Hot Tubs on Discovery Princess

The main pool on the Discovery Princess

Nothing beats relaxing by a pool with a nice drink in hand as you feel the fresh sea breeze pass by you. The problem is that with thousands of people on a ship, there's not always room. If you want to spend all day in a pool, a cruise might not be the right choice. You would have a much better bet choosing a resort with a huge pool complex. That being said, a quick dip in the pool can be nice on a hot day.

The Princess Cruises Discovery Princess has a total of 4 pools and 10 hot tubs. 1 of the pools and 1 of the hot tubs are exclusive access, which means there's either an extra charge to access them or you need to book a certain class of cabin to have access to them.

Discovery Princess Features and Activities

There are quite a few things to do on the Discovery Princess. These are the main amenities that are available. Some are included in the cost of the cruise, while others have an additional charge.

Princess Cruises is a premium cruise line. Premium cruise lines typically offer upscale food, accommodations, and service. These typically cost about $150 - $400 per person per day.

Cruise pricing is dynamic and varies for each specific sailing based on factors such as departure point, ports of call, and time of year.

Discovery Princess Onboard Costs

Another way to gauge the cost of a cruise is to consider how much you'll spend on board. Even though a lot is included in the base cruise fare, you may still spend money on things like spa treatments, specialty dining, drinks, and excursions. In addition, guests can also have to pay for things like gratuities and tips.

Typically guests can expect to spend about 25 - 40% of the cost of the cruise on onboard expenses. In other words, if the cruise fare is $1,000 per person, you might spend between $250 and $400 on extra expenses.

The table below will help you understand what you might spend onboard a Princess Cruises ship.

Princess Cruises offers two packages to bundle onboard expenses. The Princess Plus package includes daily gratuities, the basic beverage package, 2 fitness classes, 2 casual dining meals, and internet for $60 per day per guest. The Princess Premier package upgrades to the premiere beverage package, wifi for up to 4 devices per guest, two specialty dining meals, unlimited casual dining meals, unlimited fitness classes, and a photo package for $80 per guest per day.

Discovery Princess review

When some think of cruises, a picture of cheesy, matching family T-shirts comes to mind. Perhaps you think of long lines at the buffet and loop-de-loop water slides that never seem to end on the lido deck. For some, this image isn’t relaxing, but not all ships are created equal.

The lovely Discovery Princess , the second newest cruise ship among Princess Cruises’ fleet, is one of the most elegant I’ve voyaged on — and I’ve been on 10+ cruises (read: best cruises I reviewed ). So, you can say I’ve become quite the cruise critic over the years.

While each cruise ship has something unique to offer, I can honestly say my experience setting sail on the Discovery Princess was my favorite cruise yet.

RELATED : Princess unveils its new Sun Princess ship

As part of the itinerary’s Pacific Wine Country Tour for an April 2024 sailing, I embarked from the Los Angeles port in San Pedro, CA and then traveled to San Diego; San Francisco; Astoria, OR; and Victoria and Vancouver, Canada. The best part was experiencing Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley on one of Princess Cruises’ excursions, but more on that later.

To assemble an in-depth review of my experience, I divided this piece into a few sections: who it’s good for, activities and entertainment, food and drink options, excursions and special features. Consider this your all-in-one guide. After all, I did plenty of research myself — a discovery , if you will — via YouTube videos, Discovery Princess Facebook groups and by way of the easy-to-use Princess app. Not to mention, since I’ve cruised on other lines, including Carnival, Celebrity, NCL and Royal Caribbean, you’ll find some comparison notes as well.

Even better, this cruise vacation was with my high school best friend, Veronica, who has never been aboard a cruise ship. It was such a unique experience seeing all that Discovery Princess had to offer with her first-time perspective, which is infused within this review as well.

Who it’s good for

Views from The Sanctuary, Discovery Princess' adults-only retreat.

Most cruise lines are designed for whatever you’d like your vacation to be, whether it’s solo travel, couples traveling, a best friend cruise (I’m representing this demographic here) and family trips. Aboard Discovery Princess, I even saw a 20+ family reunion. The possibilities are endless, and some sailings may yield older or younger demographics depending on the itinerary, length of the cruise and other factors.

Veronica and I are both in our early 20s, and we found the Discovery Princess to cater to an older crowd, as we saw many middle- and senior-aged couples. However, we scouted a handful of young adult couples, just not nearly as many as you’d find on more “ family-friendly ” cruise lines, like Carnival and Royal Caribbean.

However, this isn’t a dealbreaker in the slightest. A cruise is what you make of it, and we enjoyed trying top-of-the-line specialty restaurants, heading to Broadway-production-style shows, booking excursions for each port we docked at and relaxing in the Lotus Spa , the latter being a true R&R highlight. Pro tip: pick up a Miami Vice or your favorite cocktail at one of Discovery’s bars before heading to The Enclave, the spa’s modern, state-of-the-art relaxation centers with a jet pool, two different sauna rooms and heated lounge chairs. You definitely won’t be sorry.

Because Discovery Princess was my first trip with Princess Cruises, I can’t speak if the slightly older clientele is characteristic of the cruise line at large or this specific itinerary. Granted, it was a wine-centric itinerary at the end of April, so I wasn’t expecting to see many passengers younger than 21-years-old on each deck. Additionally, we didn’t sail in peak summertime months when school’s out and more family vacations may take place.

While I certainly remember way more families aboard other cruise lines, that’s not to say Princess isn’t family-friendly. There’s a variety of entertainment options, which you’ll find on the stateroom patter (otherwise known as a printed itinerary) each evening, placed at the foot of your bed by a stateroom attendant. Or, you can follow along on the Princess app.

Activities and entertainment

One of the highlights from the Discovery Princess ship is, without question, the activities and entertainment that I’d say is world-class. I grew up going to theaters, Broadway shows and local productions and it was clear as day that the variety of shows featured well-versed actors, performers, dancers, singers and a legitimate crew to put together the lighting, choreography and the entire setup from start to finish.

If heading to shows isn’t entirely your thing, that’s OK, too; Discovery Princess had a multitude of game shows, comedians, dance and deck parties (sometimes, dance parties on the deck), trivia and more. Below, I ran through some of the activities and entertainment options Veronica and I experienced during our April 2024 sailing:

Production Shows at Princess Theater

Princess Theater

One of the most memorable experiences aboard Discovery Princess was heading to the Production Shows during the eight-day cruise. Show times and type may vary depending on the sailing, though you can expect two Production-level shows. These mimic the vibe exuded on Broadway.

Aboard Discovery, I went to the “Spotlight Bar” show, where the full cast sang radio, sing-along hits in front of a bar scene. The group dances and individual ballads were nothing short of phenomenal. As much as I loved watching the first Production-level show, I adored the “Rock Opera” show, a fusion of 80s rock with opera-style performances. Think: “The Greatest Showman” meets Cyndi Lauper. The costumes, set and overall segue from song to song was unparalleled; I didn’t want it to end.

Additionally, Princess Cruises has two show times for its Production-level shows: one at 7:30 p.m. and another at 9:30 p.m. This works out well, that way you have options to work around your dinner reservations or late-night activities, like the after-hours comedian or DJ.

Aside from Production Shows at Princess Theater, there were two to three other shows performed by soloists Willis White and Nick Petris who paid homage to music icons Lionel Richie and Michael Bublé, respectively. Both were excellent and entertaining. Princess Theater also hosted a magician one night, though we didn’t attend.

Game Shows at Princess Live!

Another sit-back-and-relax moment aboard Discovery was the schedule of game shows from the first to last evening on the cruise. Sometimes, game shows can be corny, but the Princess crew truly knew how to entertain.

Veronica and I attended a few, including “Top, Middle or Bottom” where passengers took turns selecting Jeopardy-style tiles and either passing through to the next column (a checkmark), receiving one of three X-es (a firecracker symbol) or a trivia question (a question mark). It was a pretty suspenseful guessing game and one that kept us pretty entertained.

Another game show we attended one evening was called “Majority Rules,” where we’d answer somewhat controversial questions like, “Who’s the best female singer?” or “What’s the greatest film of all time?” As the name suggests, the majority rules, and each “team” tallies up their points to crown the ultimate victor.

The vibe of the game shows was the perfect after-dinner activity. Many cruisers sat in armchairs with a drink in hand, just relaxing and enjoying the atmosphere. The best part? Most game shows were hosted by the cruise director. Kristoff, if you’re reading this, we love you .

Comedy Shows at Vista Lounge (nicknamed “Laugh Lounge”)

Laugh Lounge

For fans of stand-up comedy, Discovery hosted quite a few comedy shows, divided among three comedians on my particular sailing. These shows were hosted at Vista Lounge, a sophisticated and snazzy venue space, though the backdrop transforms into a brick-style background with a neon “Laugh Lounge” sign in cursive, apropos of the crew’s production team.

Some comedians starred on Comedy Central and popular Late Night shows and had us laughing to no end. Whether it’s your first cruise or you’re a four-times-a-year cruiser, the banter and jokes made about cruising pet peeves is witty, relatable and entertaining.

Most of all, I loved the variety of comedians aboard Discovery. On a previous Carnival cruise, there was only one comedian who, although was great at improv comedy and picking on audience members, didn’t inspire me to see all seven of his shows. The comedians aboard Discovery were proof that live entertainment on this ship is purely unforgettable.

The Dance Competition

Slightly hidden on the itinerary, the Princess Dance Competition allows passengers and crew members to be selected at random in the cruise’s version of “Dancing with the Stars.” Spoiler alert: this was one of my favorite moments from the cruise. I ended up participating, dancing with a crew member from the buffet team and ended up *winning* the whole competition. And yes, I ended up doing a split. There’s something I didn’t think I’d do on a cruise ship…

Other activities and entertainment

Discovery Princess Casino

From regular perusing of the daily itinerary, there are additional activities to enjoy. Discovery ensured that there were enough options to choose from on both sea days and days at port. On some other cruise lines, there was next to nothing to do in the afternoons, so this was a nice touch.

Below, find a sampling of events and activities you may expect to experience aboard Discovery Princess:

  • “Deal or No Deal” show: Similar to Bingo, which was also offered aboard Discovery, game cards for Deal or No Deal were being sold. As an audience member, you have quite a few chances to win the ultimate prize, following along as the show goes on.
  • Casino : Many cruisers enjoy spending time at the casino, whether it be individual slot machines or Blackjack and Roulette tables. I enjoyed spending some time at the Casino, but keep in mind this is only open during times at sea due to port laws and regulations.
  • Fitness classes : Discovery offers a gym-grade fitness center with professional equipment and even pilates, barre, yoga and HIIT classes you can sign up for.
  • Line dancing : On Discovery, there’s a ton of line dancing happening in The Piazza, the main epicenter of the ship. This exists on other cruises I’ve sailed on as well, but this sailing took it to the next level.
  • Afternoon tea : During sea days, Discovery hosted an afternoon tea at 3:00 p.m. in one of the three main dining rooms. Complete with finger sandwiches, teas and handhelds, passengers loved the experience. We skipped it on our cruise only because one of our excursions in Victoria, Canada was having high tea at a mansion.
  • Cocktail experiences : Around 4:45 p.m. or so, Discovery hosted cocktail experiences every few days. This sip-and-learn activity is hosted at one of the main bars and a bartender will walk you through crafting tips, different flavor pairings and, of course, mixing drinks right in front of you.

Food and drink options

An incredible, standout feature aboard Discovery Princess was its wealth of well-varied food and beverage options. If you’ve been on a cruise before, you know you’ll never go hungry, but this ship’s prized dining room service, quality and flair was a step above other cruises I’ve been on.

Main Dining Room

Discovery Princess has three main dining rooms: Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway, all named after locations in Alaska, one of the ship’s most-traveled-to destinations. Each passenger or passenger group will be assigned one of the three main dining rooms to eat at each evening with different times as well. Wonderfully, there was much flexibility at each dining room if you preferred to dine a bit earlier or later than your scheduled time.

Compared to other ships, the food in the main dining rooms was much better and closely on par with the multitude of specialty dining options you’ll find on board. You’ll find at least one formal night (aka, lobster night for seafood fans) where nearly everyone is decked out in cocktail attire to take professional photos and enjoy a delicious menu. Production-level shows are usually this night as well.

Breakfast in the main dining room was also an enjoyable experience, where you can enjoy fresh juices, pastries, fruits and main courses. The menu was smaller than other cruises I’ve been on, but this wasn’t a dealbreaker.

The World Fresh Marketplace

World Fresh Marketplace

The World Fresh Marketplace, otherwise known as the buffet, didn’t have a miles-long line like some other cruises I’ve sailed on. The options were diverse, delicious and perfect for a quick bite. Veronica and I loved the taco bar and pasta station, as well as the fresh fruit counter. Not to mention, the service is one of the best; waitstaff circles around tables to offer you fresh water, juice or soda on trays, making it extra convenient for your overall dining experience.

International Café

Located on Deck 5 next to The Piazza, International Café is a complimentary, luxury-leaning, grab-and-go counter where you’ll find fresh pastries (note: the almond croissants, heated up, are to die for), desserts and handcrafted sandwiches. This is also where you can grab lattes, cappuccinos and other beverages.

Veronica and I dined here nearly every morning before an early excursion because it’s delicious, in a great location and, overall, a quick venue. The service was top-notch and well-loved by passengers; plenty of people aboard grabbed a coffee and sat at one of the tables along The Piazza to enjoy live pianists, vocalists and other entertainment throughout the day and into the evening.

What’s more, the International Café is complimentary. On other cruise lines, each specialty coffee and pastry was an extra charge. This is a testament to Princess Cruises’ affinity for quality-first dining experiences.

Ocean Terrace Sushi Bar

Ocean Terrace Sushi Bar, an incredibly fresh dining locale aboard Discovery Princess.

The love I have for Ocean Terrace Sushi Bar is tenfold. Before dinner on some evenings, Veronica and I would head to this modern counter — located right above and overlooking The Piazza — to enjoy fresh crab, shrimp and spicy tuna rolls that are handmade right in front of our eyes. The quality was some of the best I’ve had. It’s a casual yet spectacular setting. Additional charges may apply depending on what you order.

Gigi’s Pizzeria by Alfredo

Gigi's Pizza by Alfredo

Also one deck above The Piazza, Gigi’s Pizzeria by Alfredo is another sit-down locale where you can enjoy live music surrounding you. This was the first food venue Veronica and I dined at for lunch on embarkation day and we loved the fresh Margherita and veggie pizzas, as well as the salads.

Uniquely, the pizza options are certified authentic Neapolitan pizza, much like its gelato on board (which is located on the same deck as The Piazza, and one of the only cruise ships to boast gelato that’s certified by the Italian government). Pretty iconic, to say the least.

360: An Extraordinary Experience

360: An Extraordinary Experience

If you ask me about the most memorable experience aboard Discovery Princess of them all, it was what’s called 360. This isn’t just any specialty dining venue. For an additional charge per person (about $150 or so), the dining staff will take you through “a journey through tastes, sights, sounds, textures and scents,” per the cruise line.

This seven-course journey is both filling and fantastically put together. Without giving too much away, the meals are inspired by the Mediterranean and, according to the hostess Magdalena, “you won’t find this food anywhere else on board — even at the specialty dining venues.”

This 360 Experience is reserved for 13-year-olds and older, though my group had nobody younger than 21-years-old. For some, the idea of not knowing what you’ll be eating can be somewhat terrifying but rest assured, the team takes any dietary restrictions into account. For instance, Veronica has a shellfish allergy an they made an equally delicious substitute. If you take anything away from this review, book 360 .

The Catch by Rudi

The Catch by Rudi

Veronica and I enjoyed The Catch by Rudi , Discovery’s seafood specialty restaurant. Everything from the service to the presentation was extravagant and this was my favorite specialty restaurant on the ship. It’s a pure celebration of all things ocean.

Typical of other specialty restaurants you’ll find, you’ll choose one appetizer, one main course and one dessert. The cocktails at The Catch by Rudi were some of our favorites. My dish, called the Triple S Platter because it contained salmon, scallops and shrimp, was mouthwatering. There was even a hanging prawn on my plate when our waitress brought it out!

Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria

You can take the girl out of New Jersey, but you can’t take New Jersey out of the girl. From someone who comes from a family making their own sauce each Sunday, Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria was a much-needed dining option in my books. Here, you’ll actually find a five-course meal: an appetizer, a soup or salad, a pasta, an entree and a dessert. In short, come hungry.

The food and cocktails here were incredible and we loved the on-the-house rice balls the waitstaff presented to each table. It was so delicious that we ordered room service from Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria one evening as we watched Discovery sail away from one of our ports. It was heaven .

Sometimes, you just want a comfort meal, like lasagna or lemon chicken. Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria 100% satisfied that craving for both of us, and we enjoyed every minute of our time here.

Crown Grill

Ah, we’ve landed at Discovery’s steakhouse. Ranked one of the best cruise ship steakhouses, per Princess Cruises website, Crown Grill features premium aged beef and fresh seafood items. Its open kitchen design and elegant setting make it a lovely choice. Not to mention, you can have a tasting of all of the sides.

Above all else, you’ll want to experience Crown Grill’s ribeye steak and filet mignon if you’re a lover of chops. The glazes, sauces, whipped butter and specialty salts (yes, you read that correctly) made the experience very upscale.

Shore excursions

Whether you take excursions is entirely based on personal preference. On the Pacific Wine Country Tour aboard Discovery Princess , Veronica and I embarked on the following crew-organized options:

  • San Diego, CA : City Drive & La Jolla Highlights
  • San Francisco, CA : Sonoma Wine Country
  • Astoria, Oregon : Willamette Valley Wine Country
  • Victoria, Canada : High Tea at Pendray Mansion & City Highlights

From experiencing some of the best wine in the Pacific to learning the ins and outs of popular locations like San Francisco and Vancouver Island, we felt each tour was well-organized and worth the added cost. Among all the excursions on this particular voyage, we enjoyed Sonoma Wine Country the most because, after all, who doesn’t want to travel to Napa?

Booking excursions is simple to do so on the Princess app. Or, you can opt to check in regularly with the Shore Excursions desk on Deck 5 near The Piazza to ask any questions you may have. Veronica and I decided to swap our previously booked biking excursion in Oregon to experience more of wine country and the crew staff was able to reprint new tickets as the tour wasn’t fully booked.

If you aren’t able to book your first-choice excursion, I wouldn’t worried. While there aren’t guarantees, Princess will hold you on an organized waitlist. In fact, Veronica and I were on a waitlist for Sonoma Wine Country and luckily joined the tour.

Additionally, every excursion through Princess guarantees your arrival back on the ship as it departs. You’ve likely heard of “cruise horror stories” where certain cruise lines will leave you if you’re not back by the arranged on-board time. Even if an excursion is running a bit late (like mine in Oregon), rest assured the ship will not depart without you. If you opt to journey at a port on your own and you’re late, that may be a different story.

Special features

Without a doubt, Discovery Princess had a catalog of special features that I remember even after my cruise. Below, find them listed:

  • MedallionClass : Instead of a stateroom card that serves as your ID and cabin entry, Discovery operates via a Medallion that’s a bit larger than a quarter and inscribed with your name. Whether you use the included lanyard or opt to buy a Medallion accessory, like a clip, this makes it so much easier to charge extras to your ship account (called your Folio). The Medallion serves as a tracker as well, so the service tends to operate quicker than other ships because of facial recognition, made possible by the photo you took on embarkation day or that you’ve uploaded to your Princess app profile. You can even enter your stateroom hands-free!
  • The Enclave at Lotus Spa : For about $165 per person, you can enjoy unlimited access to The Enclave, the private resort-style room at the Lotus Spa where you’ll find a jet pool, saunas and heated beds. You’ll also have access to the Relaxation Room, a wonderful sanctuary for reading, meditating and enjoying ice water with cucumber or lemon. This made the trip feel a bit more higher-end than what may be offered on some older ships.
  • Larger than usual staterooms : Veronica and I were at a balcony cabin which tends to be larger than interior staterooms. However, when I first entered our balcony cabin, I was blown away by how much space we had. Other cruise lines had extremely small bathrooms, showers and walking space near the beds. The ship’s design — featuring smaller staircase landings and hallways — allows the individual rooms to be a hair larger than most other ships.
  • Smooth embarkation and disembarkation process : Largely in part by the MedallionClass experience, Veronica and I were able to disembark within 30 minutes. I’ve experienced hours upon hours of wait times at other cruise ports and was impressed by the swiftness to enter and leave the ship. Plus, Princess accommodates your preferred time on most occasions, especially if you have a flight booked.
  • Ship size : You won’t feel like you’re at a shopping mall on Discovery. The ship occupies 3,660 guests instead of 8,000 or so I’ve experienced on other ships. This is the ideal size in my opinion and, considering a quite manageable passenger count, there was *so* much to do. You’re receiving the complete cruise experience sans the chaos, which we both appreciated.

The bottom line

Discovery Princess

Everything from the dining experiences to activities and overall service on the Discovery Princess made our voyage extremely memorable. Each step of the way, I felt as if I was on a luxury vacation, even though some experiences — like specialty dining and the Lotus Spa — were additional costs. The Production Shows, endless entertainment and accommodations deserve awards of their own, and I would surely set sail on another Princess Cruise again. Veronica, first-time cruiser, would, too!

All 16 Princess Cruises Ships, From Newest to Oldest

Here’s everything you need to know about the Princess Cruises fleet.

discovery princess cruise ship wiki

Courtesy of Princess Cruises

Sailors of all ages love Princess Cruises for its quality, service, value, and serene style of cruising.  What’s more, the 2023 T+L World’s Best Award-winning mega-ship line   — which is also a WBA Hall of Fame Honoree — tends to steer clear of splashy entertainment (for example, you won’t find go-karts, water slides, or ziplines on board most ships) in favor of more refined activities. Discovery at SEA programming is a standout offering: In partnership with Discovery and Animal Planet, guests can partake in nature-centric onboard activities and shore excursions. Most Princess ships boast a majestic atrium modeled after an Italian piazza, and it’s here where you’ll find some of the best drinking, dining, and shopping venues on board.

According to travel advisor and cruise specialist Jennaca Boose of Marvelous Mouse Travels , Princess’ fleet of 15 ships — 16 if you count the upcoming Sun Princess , which will make its long-anticipated debut this year — is family-friendly, and each vessel is “equipped to entertain all ages;” however, some cater towards specific age demographics better than others. For example, she says, travelers sailing with younger children will especially love Royal Princess and Regal Princess , which “have even more to offer” beyond the kids club, such as “outdoor play areas with jungle gyms and a separate teen space with a hot tub.” Meanwhile, says Boose, cruisers craving an intimate onboard experience may consider sailing aboard Coral Princess or Island Princess , which are two of the line’s smaller ships.

Finally, it’s also worth noting that the line offers dozens, if not hundreds, of itineraries across the globe, including Alaska, Mexico, Japan, the Mediterranean, and many more. “Whether you’re looking for a quick getaway or an immersive cultural itinerary,” says Boose, “Princess has a ship for you.” Without further ado, keep scrolling for a breakdown of each ship in the Princess Cruises fleet to help you narrow down which vessels would be best for you.

Finally, for the best ocean views, book one of the Sky Suites.

Majestic Princess

Regal Princess

This 2014 mega-ship definitely delivers in terms of onboard attractions. A few fan favorites include movies under the stars (best enjoyed with popcorn and candy in hand, of course), original productions, an outdoor musical fountain show, and Princess Live!, where passengers will find interactive culinary shows along with late-night comedy and game shows that can be viewed in-person or from the comfort of one’s stateroom. Last but not least, don’t forget to snap a selfie on the SeaWalk.

Emerald Princess

Inaugural Year: 2007

Last refurbished in 2019, Emerald Princess features something for families of all ages, including  reimagined Camp Discovery youth and teen centers and the serene Sanctuary, a kid-free slice of paradise in the middle of the sea. Passengers can also perfect their swing at the putting course, enjoy poolside movie screenings, unwind at one of several swanky bars and lounges, including the Speakeasy Cigar Lounge, hit the spa, or dance the night away at the onboard club. In summary, it’s pretty much impossible to be bored on this ship.

Crown Princess

Inaugural Year: 2006

Despite its 3,000-plus passenger capacity , Crown Princess never feels super crowded thanks to abundant onboard amenities and activities. Highlights include three main dining rooms, a three-story atrium, and, of course, ample activities and programming, which run the gamut from basketball courts and pajama movie nights for kids to karaoke and an onboard nightclub.

Diamond Princess

After dancing the night away, adults can spend the day relaxing at The Sanctuary, while families will surely appreciate the dedicated spaces for kids, tweens, and teens.

Island Princess

Inaugural Year: 2003

Ship Class: Coral

Ship Capacity: 2,200 guests

Island Princess was purposefully built to sail through the Panama Canal. This 2,200-guest, 20-plus-year-old ship offers a more refined onboard experience compared to the line’s newer, flashier vessels. Sea days are well spent at the spa, in swimming pools, or sipping cocktails in the massive atriums; come nighttime, watch movies under the stars (a Princess staple) or catch live musical performances before hitting the sack — and getting ready to do it all again the following day.

Coral Princess

Ship Capacity: 2,000 guests

Coral Princess is Princess’ smallest ship; however, there is still plenty to see, do, and experience on board. Guests can make themselves right at home in the piazza-style grand atrium, where prime people-watching awaits. For some R&R, grown-ups can head to the tranquil, adults-only Sanctuary while the kids are at play at the children’s centers.

Grand Princess

Inaugural Year: 1998

Ship Capacity: 2,600 guests

Princess’ oldest ship underwent a major renovation back in 2019, adding fan-favorite restaurants like Alfredo's Pizzeria, Salty Dog Grill, and Coffee & Cones. Following a weeklong gathering of travel writers onboard the Discovery Princess, I sought insights from 19 seasoned experts about their most intriguing finds during our voyage.

Here are 20 things the travel connoisseurs shared about the pleasant surprises or indulgences that you could easily overlook on your next cruise.

Table of Contents

1.) Mini Golf Hideaway on Discovery Princess

a putting green on top of a ship with the bulbous radar towers serving as traps, don't miss this Princess Discovery experience as the ship sails away from port

If you find yourself fortunate enough to be cruising on Princess Cruises’ flagship vessel, the Discovery, you’re in for a treat. This ship is stunning both inside and out.

And speaking of outside, I’m here to let you in on a fun secret with epic views.

When touring the Discovery Princess, be sure to make your way outside to the very top of the 17th deck. Not only is this the highest deck on the ship, but it’s also hiding a mini golf course.

This mini golf course is indeed mini, but its views are anything but. From up here, the views go as far as the eye can see. On a day at sea, you might even spot a whale or two.

Whether or not you play mini golf, I suggest heading up to Deck 17 to enjoy the views.

And while you’re up there, you might as well swing a club around. When else will you get the opportunity to play mini golf at sea overlooking the ocean?

Cruising is all about new and exciting experiences, and this is one you won’t want to miss.

2.) The Unforgettable but Easily Missed '360' Food Adventure

discovery princess cruise ship wiki

If you’re sailing on the Discovery Princess or Enchanted Princess, book the not-to-be-missed fully immersive “360 Experience,” a dinner voyage showcasing the Mediterranean.

The spectacular hilltops of Santorini, Amalfi Coast, Barcelona and Provence. Peek into the memories of a fellow “everywoman” traveler who relives her adventures and the local connections made in each destination as her travel journal comes to life.

This is a feast for the eyes, ears, nose and palate where guests learn about local ingredients, artisans and passionate food purveyors through synchronized authentic storytelling, music, scents, cuisine and stunning filmed elements.

In two seatings nightly, the cloaked venue accommodates 20 diners surrounded by circular LED walls to place guests into the featured destinations using stunning 4K cinematography.

Journey through seven gourmet courses – each with a wine or spirits pairing – inspired by the stories of each destination.

As a former film festival director and current food and wine writer, I was literally “blown away” by this food adventure!

“360 is a fusion of master storytelling, world-class cuisine, visual entertainment and ground-breaking technology that manifests in what can only be described as an Extraordinary Experience,” says Princess President John Padgett. “360 is a remarkable adventure that immerses our guests into the compelling cultures and flavors of the Mediterranean in a 90-minute celebration of the senses.”

3.) Don’t Miss This Terrifying (For Me) Discovery Princess Skywalk Over the Sea

discovery princess cruise ship wiki

When I captured this image from my Discovery Princess Deluxe Balcony Cabin , there was something I didn’t know.

I didn’t understand what the blue lights on the deck above were. The beautiful radiance, I thought, came from the bridge. But no! (Adrienne will share about the Princess Discovery Bridge Tour with you a bit later.)

It wasn’t until almost our final day of sailing, when I accidentally stumbled upon the SeaWalk® on Deck 16—the Lido Deck—that I learned what the blue glow truly was.

The azure color I could see from my balcony came from the SeaWalk®, a scary 60-foot / 18.3-m long glass walkway cantilevered 28 feet / 8.5 m beyond the ship’s edge.

You can access the scary skywalks outside the SeaView Bar on the port or starboard.

I’m afraid of heights, so even though I took a video as I walked beside the sea-through path, I couldn’t force myself to trod on the glass 128 feet above the waves.

Yikes! Don’t miss it!

4.) Cruise Lines Rarely Offer Bridge Tours, But It Doesn't Hurt to Ask

handsome young man in white uniform with navy and gold bars on shoulders looks over his shoulder at camera while sitting in the captain's chair on this Discovery Princess cruise ship bridge

I jumped at the chance to join a small group tour of the bridge on Discovery Princess. In case you’re wondering, the bridge is no ordinary wheelhouse. The technology-rich, spacious “command center” relies on a small joystick to steer the vessel. In truth, though, sophisticated systems allow navigators to set preprogrammed courses.

Multiple displays confirm that the ship remains “on track!” Integrated technology employs GPS, radar, electronic charts, closed circuit TV and a wealth of “real-time” data on numerous screens, in addition to worldwide satellite communication.

Still, the ship doesn’t run itself! A bridge team, including a ranking Senior Officer, a Third Officer, and two lookouts, stands four-hour watches around the clock. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer superb visibility in all directions.

Both the Captain and Staff Captain join the bridge team for port arrivals and departures, and a pilot may come aboard to provide local knowledge. Port and starboard wing stations offer flexibility for maneuvering during berthing, and the ship’s Captain is always in control.

Technology aboard this modern cruise ship is impressive, to be sure, but the knowledge and dedication displayed by the ship’s officers are equally awe-inspiring.

Check with Discovery Princess guest services desk to see if a bridge tour is available!

5.) Private Luxury Whiskey Tasting

a crystal rectangular cuboid is 2/3 full of amber colored liquid, a high-end whiskey now available on Princess Discovery

Fellow travel writer Jo Clark says her recent whiskey tasting was like slipping into a speakeasy! She relates the story here.

During my Discovery Princess cruise, I tasted The Macklowe American Single Malt Whiskey (Kentucky Edition), now available on Discovery Princess. Ssssshhhh! It may still be a secret!

The official announcement of this partnership hasn’t been made. But I’m just sayin’—on your next cruise, keep your eyes on the bartender!

I’m a Southern, no stranger to bourbon or whiskey, and an admitted wine lover.

Since there are flavor profile similarities between whiskey and wine, appreciation for these two beverages fits together like a hand in a glove.

The brainchild of whiskey aficionado  Julie Macklowe ,  The Macklowe is liquid gold pouring out of the Kentucky hills. The whiskey ingredients are sourced in Kentucky and made in small batches, then barrel-aged for 44 months before its limited release.

The truth about American Single Malt Whiskey is if it were distilled in Scotland, it would be called Scotch!

The Macklowe doesn’t come cheap, but it sure goes down smooth!

Julie Macklowe is one of only 200 Whiskey Ambassadors in the world and earned her certificate with a perfect test score.

6.) Really? Watch Football Under the Stars on Discovery Princess?

discovery princess cruise ship wiki

Cool evening air called for a fleece blanket as I kicked back on a lounge chair on Deck 16 of Discovery Princess and cheered the Kansas City Chiefs.

The opening reception of the conference at sea I was attending had just wrapped. A couple of colleagues invited me for dinner, but I confessed my plans and politely declined. Hey, it was Sunday Night Football.

Princess Cruises offers Movies Under the Stars (and sports events) on a 300-square-foot LED screen so fans can get their fix while cruising. Some Princess ships even offer tailgate parties. Soccer fans will be thrilled to learn that select ships in the Princess fleet will show all games of the FIFA World Cup.

This was my first time watching a football game on a screen outside, but I loved being under the stars with fellow cruisers and football followers.

I sat near the main pool where a couple of kids, oblivious to the game, splashed me as they hopped in and out. But I didn’t care. IPA and a slice of pizza in hand, I was in the zone. Game on.

7.) Navigate Tech Troubles with Discovery Princess IT Heroes!

discovery princess cruise ship wiki

When we were having issues with our wifi connection onboard the Discovery Princess, my first instinct was to go to the Internet Café on Deck 5 for help. However, we were on Deck 7 next to the Princess Live Theater getting a hot tea, and I asked a young lady dressed in a Discovery Princess uniform where we could get help connecting our devices to the ship’s wifi.

She smiled and said, “I would be happy to help you with that.”

And so started our love affair with Daniella, a bright and beautiful young lady from Serbia. Daniella took care of connecting our phones as well as our laptops and also took care of some administrative issues on our account. She also assisted us with another IT issue we had the next day.

So, if you find yourself in need of IT help, head to the kiosk by the Princess Live Theater, and one of the friendly staff will be happy to help you. If it happens to be a smiling Daniella from Serbia, tell her Julie and Scott said hello.

8.) Join the Quacky Quest: Uncover Hidden Rubber Ducks Aboard Discovery Princess

photo of indoor planter full of indoor plants on Discovery Princess cruise

Hiding little rubber ducks on cruise ships has become a delightful, albeit quirky, tradition among cruise enthusiasts. But why do they do it? Well, it’s all about spreading joy and creating a sense of community onboard.

Imagine the excitement of finding a tiny, whimsical duck tucked away in unexpected places aboard the Discovery Princess—it’s like a nautical treasure hunt!

However, there are some unwritten rules in the rubber duck hunting game.

First, let’s talk about where NOT to hide them. It’s essential to avoid stashing ducks in stores, near emergency equipment, or anywhere they could potentially blow off the ship and pollute the pristine waters. We’re all about fun, not harm!

Now, where should you hide or hunt for these charming ducks?

Elevators are prime real estate, often adorned with ducks peeking from ledges. You might spot them among potted plants, near stacks of fresh towels for pool-goers, or even on stairwells.

The goal is to surprise and delight fellow Discovery Princess passengers, so get creative!

Just remember, the joy of finding a rubber duck is contagious, and it’s all part of the unique cruise experience. So, keep your eyes peeled, and happy duck hunting!

9.) Indulge in Room Service on the Discovery Princess

montage of 2 photos: the first with a breakfast order door hanger on the nob of a Discovery Princess cabin door, and the second of a tray of breakfast itesms: orange juice, tea, grapefruit half and almond croissant lit by the morning sun

One of my favorite cruising indulgences is to get room service breakfast delivered to my cabin.

Ordering breakfast on the Discovery Princess is very easy. Fill out the breakfast request card in your room with your desired choices.

Note that you can also write in items not on the list. Also, indicate what time you want breakfast delivered. Finally, hang the paper on the doorknob outside your cabin door before you go to bed at night. Then, the next morning at the appointed hour, your breakfast order will be brought to your cabin, and you can enjoy!

There is no charge for ordering breakfast using the doorknob card. Depending on the type of cruise package booked, there may be a charge for ordering room service.

For guests with a Princess Plus or a Princess Premier package, there is no charge for any delivery, either through the app or by phone.

For guests booked with a standard fare, there is a one-time $14.99 charge per cruise for room service or Ocean Now delivery through the app and a $5 room service fee for each order placed over a stateroom phone.

10.) Discovery Princess: Tips for Navigating the Ship

At 145,000 gross tons and a 3,660-passenger capacity, Discovery Princess is the largest ship in Princess’s fleet. So, unless you’re out for some additional exercise, it pays to know how to get where you want to go.

One of the most important things is finding your stateroom. Honestly, this wasn’t intuitive when I boarded the ship. My room was an even number on the Aloha deck, and off I went.

While the entrance to the passageway indicates even or odd numbers, my brain didn’t register that. I looked at which direction my room number was and set off.

After proceeding up and down the passageway several times, I asked aloud, “Where in the heck is A336?”

A passerby heard my question and mentioned this passage had odd-numbered cabins only.

stern of large, modern cruise ship docked next to sitting area with palm trees

I moved to the even-numbered passageway and then finding the room was a cinch.

I subsequently discovered that on a ship, the central corridor where elevators are located is similar to the hall found in a hotel. When you go down one side of the vessel, you have even-numbered rooms, while the odd-numbered rooms are on the other. Once you understand this orientation, it makes sense.

This arrangement is typical when cruising, so as you enter the port or starboard side, note if the staterooms in that passage are even or odd.

It will save you additional running or prevent you from being late.

11.) Discovery Princess Medallion Woes: What To Do When Locked Out?

discovery princess cruise ship wiki

We all have experienced a time when we have locked ourselves out of the house. We rush to get out the door and forget our house key.

This scenario can happen on a cruise, as it did for me on the Princess Discovery. I changed for dinner and walked out of the stateroom, leaving, rather than a key, my Medallion inside the cabin.

It did not occur to me until the middle of dinner. I did not want to climb seven flights of stairs to discover my room steward could not be found. So then, what to do?

Your best bet when this happens is to head over to Guest Services, which in this case was on Deck 5.

They will immediately send someone up to your room to open your door.

It might take a few minutes once you get back to your stateroom, but in my case, the staff came to my rescue.

12.) Don't Miss This on Your Next Discovery Princess Cruise: The Enclave

a large hydrotherapy pool with a cascading rain shower and powerful water jets on the outer edges

The thermal suite, called The Enclave, is a sweet spot tucked away in the Lotus Spa on Deck 5. A private retreat for adults, it quickly became my favorite daily hideaway.

The centerpiece is a large hydrotherapy pool with a cascading rain shower and powerful water jets on the outer edges that are so good at loosening knots in the muscles that I didn’t want to get out.

Eventually, though, I was always enticed to slip into one of the gentle “sensory showers” located just outside the pool, or duck into the dry sauna or one of the two steam baths.

I particularly enjoyed the Roman-style steam chamber called the Caldarium—although the cistern-like pods that emitted the steam reminded me of the movie  Alien  (but not enough to stop me from using it!).

Princess only sells a limited number of memberships per sailing to The Enclave, so it was never overly crowded, and I’m convinced that the healing waters were the reason I slept so well at sea.

Ultimately, I found the cost of $149 for the six-day cruise was a self-indulgent but guilt-free purchase thanks to the daily stress relief and camaraderie I found there!

Now that Nancy revealed her favorite things about The Enclave let’s see what blogger Tina Walsh liked best about The Enclave …

13.) The Enclave: A World of Tranquility

white features frame dark room open on the viewer's side with bed or sitting area and spectacular star-like lighting fixture above

One of my husband’s favorite experiences aboard the Discovery Princess was The Enclave. Located in the center of the Lotus Spa, the quiet haven is dedicated to well-being. The Enclave experience takes relaxation and rejuvenation to new levels.

The main attraction of The Enclave at the Lotus Spa is the thermal suites inspired by ancient Turkish and Roman bathhouses. These serene spaces are designed to enhance your well-being through therapeutic heat and water therapies.

Relax on heated stone beds, detoxify in saunas and steam rooms or indulge in the sensory pleasures of aromatic showers. You can choose the calming warmth of the Caldarium or the invigorating aromatic steam of the Hammam. My husband visited the Hamman each day after returning from shore excursions.

Another highlight of The Enclave is the luxurious hydrotherapy pool. Immerse yourself in warm, bubbling waters and let muscle tension fade away. I am a huge fan of hydrotherapy pools , where the water temperature and pressure of the jets make soaking an outstanding experience.

Whether seeking healing properties of thermal therapies, revitalizing power of the hydrotherapy pool or simply serene space to unwind and relax, The Enclave provides a refuge for your mind, body and spirit while sailing on the Discovery Princess.

14.) I Missed the Chance to Purchase Formal Photos | Here’s How To Avoid That Disappointment

Graphic of two photos, both with the same couple posing in formal attire Text reads: Formal Night Photos

If you are like me and usually purchase at least one of the formal photos taken by the cruise photographers, you might want to pay attention to this, or you could miss out. (Like I did.)

When I cruised with Princess before COVID, photos were printed as 8x10s or 5x7s and displayed for viewing and purchase. Princess usually offered discounts if you bought multiples.

If you didn’t have time to select your photos during the cruise, they were still available for purchase online for 30 days or so. This is no longer an option. It seems you can only purchase the photos while onboard the ship.

Princess outsourced the photography to a third party, and they no longer print the photos to view. There is no display of physical products.

Now, you can view the images on the Medallion app or via desktop computer at their photo store on the ship. You can only purchase the photos while onboard the ship.

Once you leave the boat, the images are gone. There is no way to purchase post-cruise. (I learned this the hard way after our cruise on Discovery Princess.)

You could easily miss fantastic photos of you and your family on your next cruise if you don’t purchase while on the ship.

Robin O’Neal Smith  |  RobinONealSmith.com

As a further bit of intel, BethEllen Clausen @organicwinetravel reports, “I tried to view and get my professional Princess photos the final morning at the final port of call and wasn’t able to.

You have to purchase them by the night before docking!”

15.) Discovery Princess: Keeping Fit With Trending Workouts

photo of wall in fitness center that lists logos of known brands

Maintaining an exercise routine while on a cruise might be more appealing if you know what’s available at the gym besides the usual weights and cardio equipment. Sometimes, it’s working out alone or among super-fit people that might keep well-intentioned cruisers away.

At Discovery Princess’ fitness center, I found a unique collaboration with well-known brands such as Stretch Lab, Yoga Six and Pure Barre. The classes are motivating, especially if indulgence in food and drink is inevitable.

The difficulty levels for the classes range from beginner to advanced, so everyone can find something that fits their schedule and fitness.

Guests need to register and pay a fee for these classes, which are charged to the cruise account. But what makes them enjoyable is having others working out together and an instructor for guidance.

It’s a fantastic way to stay focused, feel great and not feel guilty about enjoying that chocolate dessert and cocktails at dinner.

16.) Indulge in Luxe: Snag a Cabana in The Sanctuary

glass of prosecco, cup of tea and plate of finger sandwiches sit on table with view of ocean behind

The Sanctuary, tucked away on Deck 18 on the Discovery Princess, offers an adults-only haven at sea. Imagine a spa-like atmosphere with plush lounge chairs where you can sip cocktails and gaze upon open seas. For an additional fee, guests can book access for a half or full day.

My friend Michele and I booked a half-day cabana and reserved our spot facing the ship’s bow. The cabanas included two lounge chairs, a comfy couch, a chair, and a TV with a headset. Two fluffy robes and slippers waited for us.

Our cabana included a welcome cocktail and a bottle of wine or favorite spirits. You can’t go wrong with a bottle of Prosecco to share at sea! We also had a selection of fresh fruit and a mini refrigerator with soft drinks and water.

After checking in, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that afternoon tea service to guests in the Sanctuary. And the tea service comes to you! The staff brought trays of delicate finger sandwiches and pastries to nibble, including warm scones with clotted cream and jam.

If you enjoy afternoon tea, the Sanctuary may be that hidden destination to enjoy on your Discovery Princess journey.

Now that we’ve discovered the tranquil respite near the ship’s bow, let’s explore another adults-only pool where you can revel in the sight of the Discovery Princess’ majestic wake.

17.) The Little-Known Wake View Pool for Relaxed Vibe

discovery princess cruise ship wiki

If you are looking for a quieter space with gorgeous views or prefer a more peaceful pool area, then the Wake View Pool on Deck 16 (Lido Deck) on Princess Cruises Line’s Discovery Princess is for you.

Located at the back of the ship (aft), this aptly named small adult-only infinity pool and sun deck is a real gem. The plexiglass railing gives you an almost uninterrupted view of the ocean.

Unless you know where it is, you might not find it until you stumble upon the pool while wandering around the ship.

There are plenty of loungers and towels available. There are open spaces for sunbathing, covered spaces for shade, tables for eating or reading and even an area with couches.

In the evening, people bring cards, board games or a book to enjoy being outside in a quieter area.

The Wake View Pool has a bar for alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and a regular coffee, tea and hot chocolate station.

The best part of the Wake View Pool is the views. You can see the ocean stretching out behind you.

And since we’re talking about ‘wakes,’ check out the Discovery Princess wake in this next photo…

18.) FREE Laundry Service with Princess Captain's Circle Loyalty Program

dreamy aerial view of cruise ship's stern and white wake behind the ship

Since it’s been eons since my last cruise (the IFWTWA Conference at Sea in 2011), I had to review the benefits I received as a Princess Captain’s Circle loyalty member.

Returning passengers get benefits based on how many Princess cruises they’ve enjoyed. I was excited to see that complimentary laundry services were part of the deal!

First, check with Princess for your loyalty tier and then access your perks here .

Now that we’re nearing the end of our story, so too, you could be near the end of your cruise. For a special farewell dinner, don’t overlook the next tip!

19.) Secure Your Seat at the Coveted Caymus Winemaker Dinner

For a luxurious farewell night of dining aboard the Discovery Princess, I was invited to attend the Caymus Vineyards Winemaker Dinner .

We gathered in the lounge out front, enjoyed a pre-dinner cocktail (my first ever topped with red wine!), and then were theatrically marched into the dining room, greeted by what seemed like the entire staff.

The meal was a five-course feast, each paired with a wine handpicked by Chuck Wagner.

Many are familiar with the Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet, a luxury wine first crafted by Chuck and his parents in 1972. It is now made ready to drink upon release and easily accessible to many who can afford it.

What are not as well known are newer labels, including Emmolo, The Grand Durif, and The Walking Fool, all named for a historic variety or familial ancestors.

discovery princess cruise ship wiki

The wines are made by Chuck’s daughter Jenny, some from the Suisun Valley (a stone’s throw from Napa), where I visited their new dramatically beautiful tasting room and winery on a trip from the ship the day before.

The dinner featured a rich Chardonnay from Mer Soleil Monterey County, made by Chuck’s son Charlie and Jenny’s Emmolo Sparkling Wine (Mèthode Tradicionnelle).

Crown Grill restaurants ($140)

Before you head for home, here’s one last tip that is especially for our coffee lovers! Linda loved this so much that she developed a recipe once she got home.

20.) Don’t Miss International Café Bliss With a Zero-Alcohol Package

photo of the coffee bar menu on Discovery Princess

The Princess Zero-Alcohol Package is well worth considering as an add-on. It includes specialty coffees, teas, hot chocolate, fresh juice, smoothies, milkshakes, soft drinks and bottled water.

The cost is $29.99 daily (with an additional 18% service charge).

For java lovers like myself, the International Café on Deck 5 in the Piazza is not to be missed. The extensive menu offers all the popular coffee drinks, such as lattes, cappuccinos, flat whites and mochas.

I fell in love with the honey lavender latte, so when I arrived home, I had to re-create this delicious experience by devising the following recipe:

Honey Lavender Latte

1 to 2 shots brewed espresso coffee

2 Tbs. honey lavender simple syrup*

6 oz. whole milk (can substitute 2% milk or almond milk)

Pour honey lavender syrup into a large coffee cup; add espresso and stir. Place milk in an electric frother or heat milk and use a hand aerator to create froth. Gently pour milk over espresso using a spoon to hold back the foam, then add the foam last.

*Honey Lavender Simple Syrup

Place 3/4 cup water and 2 Tbs. culinary lavender (available at spice shops) in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and continue boiling for one minute. Remove from heat and immediately stir in 1/2 cup honey (this prevents crystallization). Steep for one hour; strain through a fine mesh sieve into glass jar. Store in refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.

What a great review of the ship! It sounds like a great cruise to take and loved the mention of all these hidden gems that could easily be ignored. I love doing exercise classes onboard (especially if there is Zumba) and great that these classes are also rated on difficulty. I would probably love spending time in the Enclave after all the exercising! And all the food opportunities! The big reward after exercising! The whisky tasting is lost to me but I know my husband would appreciate it! And the list goes on . . . Hmmmm . . . A cruise that we might have to look into taking!

Thanks so much for your kind words, Mary Ann! I’m glad you found the article about Discovery Princess beneficial! Let us know how your cruise went and what you discovered!
