Bon Jovi (formed in 1983) is an American hard rock band known for their arena-filling live shows and instantly recognisable worldwide hit single “Livin’ on a Prayer”, hailing from Sayreville, New Jersey.

Originally comprised of Garden State natives, frontman Jon Bon Jovi, keyboard and backing vocalist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, lead guitarists Richie Sambora, and bassist Alec John Such, the group has remained a fairly solid lineup since its formation. The band began playing around New Jersey, opening for touring bands, which is how they caught the attention of record executive Derek Shulman. He subsequently signed Bon Jovi to Mercury Records and released their debut, self-titled album in January 1984. Peaking at No. 43 on the Billboard 200, the record introduced the band’s huge, dramatic and heavy guitar-driven sound, which resulted in the band opening for the Scorpions in the U.S. and Kiss in Europe.

After a disappointing second album “7800° Farenheit” was released in 1985, Bon Jovi issued their breakthrough album “Slippery When Wet” in August 1986. Holding the top spot of the Billboard 200 for a remarkable eight weeks, the record was led by the No. 1 knockout singles “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin’ on a Prayer”, turning the group into household names the world over. The group’s 130-show supporting tour became a huge success and earned the band nearly $30,000,000. Building on this success Bon Jovi’s fourth, “New Jersey” once again found the top of the charts aided by the No. 1 singles “Bad Medicine” and “I’ll Be There for You”. With a reputation as one of the best and most intense touring bands in the world, Bon Jovi set off on a 232 show tour which included a show in the Soviet Union.

The constant cycle of recording and touring began to take its toll on the group and in 1990 Bon Jovi took a hiatus to focus on family and individual pursuits. After a conversation about the longevity of the group in St. Thomas, the members agreed to start making a new album. That new album proved to be “Keep the Faith” released in November 1992. Marked by its mature, thoughtful lyrics, the album was succeeded by the compilation “Cross Road”, which featured the band's most successful single to date, “Always”. Bassist Alec John Such was subsequently fired from the band and unofficially replaced by Hugh McDonald.

Following another huge worldwide tour, Bon Jovi issued their sixth album “These Days” in 1995, followed by “Crush” in 2000, and “Bounce” in 2002. In 2003 the band reworked a number of their biggest hits and compiled them onto the studio album “This Left Feels Right” in November. Prior to the arrival of their 10th studio album, “Have a Nice Day” in 2005, Bon Jovi was bestowed with the Award for Merit at the American Music Awards in 2003. Playing to nearly two million fans the world over, the “Have a Nice Day” Tour grossed nearly $200 million, following close behind successful tour by The Rolling Stones and Madonna.

The full-length “Lost Highway” followed in June 2007, led by the singles “(You Want to) Make a Memory” and “Lost Highway”. Following the subsequent tour, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora were inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2009, the same year they released their 12th studio album, “The Circle”.

funny because in google before you click to this site. It says

BON JOVI is on tour and has one

Coming up. But then when you go to

The actual site It states there are

NO Bon Jovi yours coming up.So why are they Conradicting themselves here on Song kicks ????. the only

thing is Jon Bon Jovi has only been

Playing at small Venues. Along with the band that is backing him up "kings of suburbia" He hasn't done anything with the Bond Jovi

band members since he recorded a

Shot concert on April 29,2021 for

Druve-Ins and Theaters. Now the only thing he is doing is for a vacation company called "RUNAWAY TOURS" for Halloween And it is only 2 nights He is gonna do a short gig and then take pictures and maybe answer some questions there's some questions for a couple of nights this is mainly just a vacation package to Miami, Florida That is outrageously expensive Is nothing like a tour concert. This thing hes doing now is a couple of $1000 plus And you have to pay for your plane fare and your food. And as for the Night of 29th and 30th And the 31st of October. But the hotel is only for 2 nights. And they still haven't booked up completely. The 1st one they did a few months ago booked up really fast for all that's for all 3 of the prices prices but this time they're not booking everything up. Most people can't afford several $1000.

I've been going to Bon Jovi gigs in UK since 1986. I was 15, already had both their previous albums. First UK tour, they played a tiny local theatre, which was half empty as they were barely known over here back then! I've been to every UK tour since, except one..even saw them at Donnington "Monsters of Rock", which is now Download. Manchester, Stoke City Stadium, Coventry; I've loved every concert, but I have to say, Coventry is a lousy venue!! It's a nightmare to get to and the lack of parking is a complete ball ache. PLEASE do more dates at Manchester and replace Coventry with the Stadium in Stoke, now called The BET 365 Stadium and is home to Stoke City fc, so same size as Coventry. Loads of parking, and not clogging up motorway slip roads to get there either. Other than that, cannot fault ANY concet I've seen; Jon is so professional. 2 concerts, on 2 consecutive tours, it belted it down with rain and they carried on, towelling off inbetween. Jon even laughed while singing the line "til the heavens burst" during "Always" Phil X is a great guitarist too. I've seen Kiss, Halestorm, Def Leppard, TOTO, Tina Turner, Guns n Roses, plus many more and Bon Jovi will always be top of my list. Lifelong fan, 37 years on from my first concert and 39 yeats since my first album "Bon Jovi". Keep on rocking!

Bon Jovi remains, to this day, a musical icon. The band is one of the most successful and famous rock bands of all time and, judging on the ridiculously large crowd that excitedly came to see the band perform live, they will never, ever lose their star. Years after their formation in 1983, Bon Jovi’s hits are still classics that everyone, young and old, can’t fail to recognise. And this is precisely why it was so brilliant to watch them perform live, in a packed out arena of thousands of fans. The energy was out of this world, and the fans were so excited that they could barely contain themselves. Even the sound check guy got an ear deafening scream when he appeared on stage. When Jon Bon Jovi himself appeared, the world exploded. Proving that he still got it, Jon Bon Jovi put his famous vocals to test with a big opener: ‘Always’. The crowd went wild. We were treated to all the hits, spanning all the decades. ‘Who Says You Can’t Go Home’ was a notable one, with the whole crowd singing along, but it was ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ that, of course, brought the house down.

I Love Bonjovi!!!Have been a fan since 1984, seen them 9 times in concert, have all their music old and new, 3 shows I went to see them by myself, this show I went by myself, and as always it was awesome!!!! Jon is amazing, I loved what he did when he quizzed the audience about the radio station, lol I just can't get over that, as any woman I wish that was me lol, they always put on a great performance, and make you feel good, I also loved when he would turn to the back of the stage and kick box into the video at the end of the song he did this 3 times, I give them 10 stars on this show, Philx was really good, I could see how much he really enjoys what he is doing, the stage was phenomenal, with the slinky lights, and how this house is not for sale picture of the album was included awesome!!!! I also have to say how much I missed seeing Richie, but, they're performance proved they've moved on, got it together and Jon Bonjovi, Tico, and David, I remember you guys in your 20's,30's,40's, I just can't believe its been over 30 years, you guys are amazing!!

Some bands never lose their appeal due to the fact their hit singles still seem relevant and able to play on radios years later. They turn from songs into much loved anthems and are passed down between families and friends. New Jersey glam rock outfit Bon Jovi definitely sit within this category thanks to their runaway success in the 80s.

Years later they are still packing out arenas with fans old and new who are all enthusiastic and ready to bellow along to those recognisable choruses. Although it is over thirty years since the band first formed, all the musicians remain so lively and passionate onstage most noticeably Jon himself who conducts his crowd like a pastor addressing his faithful church commune. He preaches, they agree although there are no hallelujahs just great rock choruses on the likes of 'Always' and 'Bad Medicine'. They leave stage in a barrage of lights and guitar riffs yet the crowd knows they will be returning for the synonymous 'Livin' On A Prayer' which unites the thousand strong audience in one almighty singalong.

Bon Jovi has been rocking it around the world since the eighties and hasn't given up yet.

They've been touring huge arenas for years and even in their ripe old age they still manage to put on over a two hour long performance that will leave you breathless and will have you singing along and dancing all night to the hits from Slippery When Wet all the way up to their latest album What about Now.

They'll make you feel like you've been time warped to the land of neon t-shirts and big hair! You'll want to go bust out your members only jacket and flock of seagulls haircut after you see them. Bringing back a blast from the past you'll be able to see the hits like "Wanted Dead or Alive" and "Living on a Prayer" just like they were in the eighties.

Bon Jovi can still hit every note perfectly and does it with a flair that only he can bring. Richie Sambora never misses a note in any of his solos and can still rock out with the best of them even going as far as doing a ten minute long guitar solo in the middle of their set.

We paid for general admission seating so we couldn't get anywhere near the stage. The screen would have been fine, but the sound system was horrible and we could barely hear him. From what we did hear, the sound was entirely muffled.

In addition, people smoked all around us and there was no fresh air. Our 10 and 8 year old boys were miserable. There were a lot of people complaining but no one from Dick's Sporting Goods was there. There were only volunteers and no one knew how to address the issue. We decided to leave after 15 minutes of the music starting. And speaking of the music starting, he started 2 1/2 hours late.

It was the worst concert I've ever experienced. And not only did we put $280 for four tickets, we paid for a hotel room so we could go to the concert.

Fortunate enough to be in a hospitality box, with a very good (close) view.

The biggest issue, was the terribly poor sound quality. I don't know if this was because of where our box was (to the side) or whether the sound was generally very poor.

when he spoke, we could not make out a single word he said.

again, when he sang, were it not for us knowing the words to his most famous songs, we would not have had a clue what he was singing.

visually, excellent, atmosphere was tremendous, but the sound was terrible.

After 4 decades in music and major vocal surgery, Jon Bon Jovi is optimistic and still rocking

With 40 years of experience in the music business, Jon Bon Jovi explains what’s behind his dedication and discipline. A four-part docuseries on Bon Jovi called “Thank You, Goodnight” debuts Friday on Hulu. (April 23)

Rockers Jon Bon Jovi, Tico Torres and David Bryan hit the red carpet in London for the premiere of their new documentary, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,” which chronicles the band’s 40-year career and uncertain future: the frontman suffered an atrophied vocal cord and had an operation two years ago. (April 17)

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — When Jon Bon Jovi agreed to let director Gotham Chopra follow him with a documentary camera to delve into the history of his band, Bon Jovi, he didn’t anticipate it would catch him at a major low point in his career.

The band was launching a tour, and despite doing all he could do to be vocally ready, the “Livin’ on a Prayer” singer struggled through songs and couldn’t hit the notes the way he used to.

Critics noticed and wrote about it. A review from Pioneer Press in St. Paul, Minnesota, said: “It felt like he had forgotten how to sing.”

In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Bon Jovi said the reaction at the time was “heartbreaking.” After exhausting holistic options, he saw a doctor who said one of his vocal cords was atrophying.

“This was unique. It wasn’t a nodule. The strong (vocal cord) was pushing the weak one around, and suddenly, my inabilities were just exacerbated,” said Bon Jovi. He underwent major surgery and is still recovering.

“Every day is sort of like doing curls with weights and just getting them both to be the same size and to function together.”

This combination of images shows promotional art for the Paramount+ series "Knuckles," the Apple TV+ series "The Big Door Prize," and the Netflix series "Dead Boy Detectives. (Paramount+/Apple TV+/Netflix via AP)

This year has been a turning point. In February, he performed for an audience for the first time since his surgery at the MusiCares Person of the Year benefit gala where he was also named Person of The Year. The band’s next album, “Forever” hits stores June 7, and its first single “Legendary” is out now. The four-part, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,” debuts Friday on Hulu.

In a Q&A, Bon Jovi talks about his voice, his famous hair, the music industry and his work ethic.

Answers have been edited for clarity and brevity.

AP: The work you put in behind-the-scenes is like a quarterback in between football games. Are you still rehearsing at that intensity, and how are you now?

BON JOVI: I’m doing great. The record was easy to do. The process has been steady. Would I like it to be a light switch? Yeah. I said to the doctor, ‘I want to flip the switch and be done with this.’ It’s just not how it works. Like an athlete coming back from an ACL tear or whatever, it just takes time. The therapy is still intensive and yet I’m confident that it gets progressively better.

AP: We learn in the docuseries that your father was a barber. You’ve always been known for having good hair, especially in the 1980’s. Does that come from your dad?

BON JOVI: Not in as much where he sat down and said, ‘I’ve got this idea.’ Really, I was a byproduct of what was the 80s. Those were my baby pictures. I love laughing at them. Now, I can jokingly at least say, ‘After 40 years of a career, I still have all my hair.’ That is a good thing. Genetics works in my favor.

AP: Do you ever think about acting again?

BON JOVI: I do, on occasion. My day job then comes back to get in the way. In truth, I’ve got a big record coming out, and I’m hoping to go out on the road, so I don’t have time for it. And I respect the craft far too much to think I’m going to walk on a set and hit my marks and call that acting.

AP: Your work ethic stands out in “Thank You, Goodnight.” We see in the early days you would sleep at the music studio. Where does that come from?

BON JOVI: If you’re not going to be great, the guy that’s coming in tomorrow night is going to be better. This isn’t a career that you should take lightly. There’s a million other young guys that are waiting to take your spot. And there are no guarantees in this business...You have to win hearts in order to win people’s hard-earned dollar. If you’re asking them to stay with you for four decades, that’s a task. You better be one of the greats or else good luck.

AP: Richie Sambora is interviewed in the series. The fans love seeing him. Do you think you will ever perform together again?

BON JOVI: We never had a big falling out. He quit 10 years ago. It’s not that we’re not in contact or anything like that, but he was choosing to, as a single dad, raise his child. The door is always open if he wants to come up and sing a song. I mean, there’s many of them that we co-wrote together. That’s a great part of both of our lives. There’s no animosity here.

AP: A lot of musicians are selling their music catalog. Would you?

BON JOVI: For some, it makes sense because they need to. For some, it makes sense because they want to. I just find (Bon Jovi’s music) to be my baby, and I have no desire at this juncture in my life to ever even consider it.

AP: You’re one of New Jersey’s favorite sons like Bruce Springsteen. It’s a point of pride for New Jersey residents that you’re from there, but you moved to Florida?

BON JOVI: Part-time! My license is still New Jersey. I still vote in New Jersey.

AP: The music industry is such a singles market now. Did you ever consider just putting out some new songs and not an entire album?

BON JOVI: See, I’m the opposite. I can only put out an album. I do all I know how to do. I have to tell the complete story. It has to be the beginning, a middle and an end because that’s who and what we are.

AP: How do you describe the new album?

BON JOVI: What comes through is joy. My goal with this record was to capture joy which for these last few years has been difficult, whether it’s the dark cloud of COVID that the world experienced or my own personal journey. With this record, I think we captured joy.

Bon Jovi’s docuseries Thank You, Good Night: The Bon Jovi Story is set to debut on Hulu on Friday (April 26), and fans of the group seem to be very excited for the show. In advance of the series hitting the streaming platform, the group’s music is lifting on the charts, as interest in all things connected to the New Jersey rockers is growing.

The rock band rises on a pair of Billboard rankings this frame. One of their most successful albums is climbing, while the group’s most famous single is also growing in stature.

Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” is a top 10 hit once again in America. This week, the tune lifts just one space on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs tally, improving to No. 10.

That single has now spent just under four years on the ranking of the most-streamed tracks in the U.S. that Billboard labels as hard rock. “Livin’ on a Prayer” has peaked at No. 4, surprisingly never reaching the No. 1 spot, despite its widespread popularity.

Bon Jovi’s Greatest Hits: The Ultimate is also performing well, though that’s not unusual for the compilation. This week, the title climbs slightly on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums. On that ranking, the project jumps to No. 34.

The same compilation is a non-mover on two other tallies. Greatest Hits: The Ultimate is steady at No. 153 on the Billboard 200 this week. It shifted another 9,205 equivalent units, according to Luminate, which is up a little more than 2% from the period before.

Google makes a new sale offer to pixel 8 buyers, the best reading glasses plus expert tips from an ophthalmologist.

Greatest Hits: The Ultimate is also comfortable again inside the top 10 on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart. The compilation has been counted as one of the most successful hard rock titles in America for years, and this frame is no different. On that ranking, the project keeps at No. 8.

In the coming week or two, it wouldn’t be odd to see Bon Jovi’s songs and albums continue to climb on the Billboard charts. Their forthcoming docuseries should be a big enough influencer to help the band rise again—and perhaps bring some other tunes back onto the weekly tallies.

Jon Bon Jovi Knew He Needed Vocal Surgery — or to Retire — After a 'Devastating' Conversation with His Wife (Exclusive)

Bon Jovi opens up about his 35-year marriage with his wife Dorothea — and how she helped him through his vocal cord issues — in this week's PEOPLE cover story

bon jovi tour london

Jon Bon Jovi is looking back on the conversation with his wife that led him to addressing his vocal cord issues .

After years of struggling in silence, the Bon Jovi frontman, 62, opens up about his strained voice — and the toll it took on him — in the band’s new Hulu docuseries , Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story (streaming Friday, April 26).

The beloved rock icon had been facing issues for at least seven seven years when was on the road for the band’s most recent tour in 2022. During an arena show in Nashville, “I gave my heart to that crowd,” he tells PEOPLE. “I thought it went well.”

But his wife Dorothea , 61, whom he wed in 1989, gave him tough love, telling him, “It wasn't great, and I’ve seen you be great.”

The conversation was “beyond heartbreaking, it was devastating,” he says, “but there’s no one better than her to tell me the truth.”

Adds Bon Jovi: “If it were going to be over, I just had to wrap my arms around that and say, ‘I've had an incredible career. It doesn't mean I can't write you a song tomorrow, just means I won't be doing a hundred-show tour.’”

Jeff Spicer/Getty

Bon Jovi then had to face the music: seek help or retire: “I went to the doctor and said, ‘I’ve done everything I know how to do.’”

In the summer of 2022, he underwent vocal fold medialization surgery, to alleviate loose vocal folds that were stealing his voice and affecting his singing.

Nearly two years since the procedure, Bon Jovi works with vocal coaches and does daily voice exercises: “Every day is the recovery process,” he says.

Following the release of their new single "Legendary," the band will drop its 16th album, Forever , in June. Recorded post-operation, Bon Jovi’s vocals may sound smokier and huskier but are no doubt his. The possibility of future tours with the band remains up in the air, though.

“I’m capable of singing. What I’m not necessarily capable of is two and a half hours a night, four nights a week,” Bon Jovi says, “but I’m aspiring to get that back.”

Founding drummer Tico Torres says that following the surgery, Bon Jovi is “singing his ass off,” adding: “He’s hitting notes he hasn’t hit since he was a kid. We’re proud of him.”

And the ordeal has also led Bon Jovi to a new outlook on life.

Jake Chessum

“The thing that gave me so much pleasure had been taken away,” he says. “Joy is something you got to work at, right? Happiness is what you make it. It’s not about seizing the day anymore. I think it’s about embracing the day. I don’t have to punch it in the face anymore, now I just give it a hug, and that’s a good place to be.”

He’s channeling that spirit into Forever (out June 7), which “is really about my finding joy again,” says Bon Jovi. “What really matters in a life? It’s love and loyalty and finding things that make you want to get up out of bed in the morning.”

In a 2020 PEOPLE cover story , Bon Jovi and wife Dorothea — who was his high school sweetheart — opened up about their lasting love story, which he he attributed to “mutual respect” at the time, adding: “And we really like each other. We want to hang out … We work hard at it, but we enjoy each other and we never fell for the trappings of what celebrity can do. We've witnessed that happen over the years to people that were close to us and people that we knew from afar. It's just what I do, it's not who I am. I write songs. I happen to be very good at performing them. That's it."

At the time, Dorothea added: “It’s a partnership.”

Jon Bon Jovi Hits the Town, and Gustavo Dudamel Takes the Stage

This week, fans turned out for a new documentary about Jon Bon Jovi and took in a performance led by Gustavo Dudamel at the New York Philharmonic’s spring gala.

Jon Bon Jovi, wearing a leather jacket over a black T-shirt, and Maye Musk, wearing a patterned black-and-white jacket, stand together at a party, smiling.

A Rocker Greets His Fans

Katie Van Syckle

Jon Bon Jovi stood blinking, rubbing his eyes, temporarily blinded on Thursday night by the lights from a row of photographers.

Recovering, the musician said, “OK, I’m here now,” and then “Hi, love,” his eyes wide as he flashed a very white smile.

He was standing just inside a movie theater at the South Street Seaport for a special screening of a new documentary series, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story.” He approached the event, hosted by the Cinema Society and Hulu, with the same charming grit that helped make him famous.

The show, now on Hulu, traces the musician’s path from his teenage years playing covers in Asbury Park, N.J., to mega-stardom with his band Bon Jovi, packing arenas with rock anthems. It also touches on his recent vocal cord trouble that led to surgery.

“I’m wonderful,” said Bon Jovi, 62, dressed in a leather jacket and jeans, with a full, feathery head of gray hair. “What you see in the film was a year and two years ago. It’s a work in progress. But it is really far down the road of recovery at this point.”

Bon Jovi will release its 16th studio album, “Forever,” on June 7. The band currently has no plans to tour, but its frontman is hopeful. “When it is right, that’s when we’ll tour,” he said.

A crowd that included the model Maye Musk and the television presenter Dan Abrams filed into the cushy seats of the iPIC Fulton Market theater to watch the first episode of the four-part series, which is directed and executive produced by Gotham Chopra. After the screening, Bon Jovi answered questions and tried to put the health concerns shown in the series in context.

“If, God forbid, I can’t perform at Giants Stadium, woe is me,” he said. “So what if I can’t sing again?”

The audience then meandered to the Fulton by Jean-Georges, a high-end seafood spot overlooking the East River, where a crowd surrounded the musician near a raw bar. The rocker grinned and chatted with fans like the actress Jennifer Esposito.

Ms. Esposito said that when she was in high school, she asked her hairdresser for Bon Jovi’s look. “I used to bring in a picture of him and say, ‘Make it look like that,’” she recalled.

The two later acted alongside each other. “He’s a cool dude from Jersey,” she said. “He wasn’t a big shot. He just wanted to show up and do a good job.”

Just before 10 p.m., after posing for a row of selfies, the musician slid out the door. Servers continued to circle with sliders and summer rolls, and as “Livin’ on a Prayer” played through the restaurant, a young bartender smiled and sang the lyrics to herself.

A Preview of Dudamel at the New York Philharmonic

Sarah Bahr

By Sarah Bahr

“What are we excited about tonight?” said Agnes Hsu-Tang, the archaeologist, art historian and wife of the New York Philharmonic co-chairman Oscar L. Tang.

“Dudamel!” she and her husband said in unison.

They were at a cocktail reception before the New York Philharmonic’s annual spring gala at David Geffen Hall on Wednesday night. In a special East Coast appearance, Gustavo Dudamel, the charismatic conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led the New York Philharmonic through a 90-minute program and preview of what is to come when he officially takes over as the orchestra’s music and artistic director in 2026.

The night was attended by music-world fixtures such as Jamie, Alexander and Nina Bernstein, the children of the conductor Leonard Bernstein; J’Nai Bridges, the mezzo-soprano; and Anthony Roth Costanzo, the countertenor.

“The whole idea is to pull classical music out of its rut and show the world how flexible and versatile it can be,” Jamie Bernstein said.

The evening gave many in attendance their first look at Mr. Dudamel, 43, the rare maestro whose fame transcends classical music. That’s not to say it will all be smooth sailing for Mr. Dudamel. He will face the challenge of reaching younger and more diverse audiences, as well as an investigation into how the orchestra handled a sexual assault accusation in 2010.

But on Wednesday night, with his baton bobbing and his curls bouncing, he led the orchestra through “The Mother Is Standing,” by the composer Nina Shekhar. The piece was followed by Heitor Villa-Lobos’s Aria from Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 (a feature for the soprano Hera Hyesang Park), Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 8 and Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier Suite.

The gala also featured performances by Common, the rapper and actor; Bernie Williams, the classical guitarist and former New York Yankees center fielder; and student musicians from across New York City. The night drew about 2,200 people and raised more than $2.4 million for the orchestra.

Later, during a dinner of jumbo asparagus and Amish chicken, a beaming Ms. Park graciously entertained a stream of well-wishers.

“I woke up at 6 a.m. before my first rehearsal with Dudamel because I couldn’t sleep because I was so excited,” she said, as people stopped by her table to congratulate her. “And,” she added, “tonight was even better than I imagined.”

Jon Bon Jovi Says He's 'Been Waiting at the Door for 10 Years' to Talk to Richie Sambora About Leaving Band (Exclusive)

T he beloved rocker looks back on the band's 40-year legacy in the new Hulu docuseries, 'Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,' streaming Friday, April 26

Jon Bon Jovi is looking back on his band’s highs and lows.

In this week’s PEOPLE cover story , the Bon Jovi frontman reflects on the legendary rock act’s legacy — and moving on after former guitarist Richie Sambora ’s sudden departure in 2013.

All these years later, Bon Jovi, 62, says he and Sambora, 64, have yet to discuss his shocking exit after performing together for nearly three decades.

“I’ve been waiting at the door for 10 years,” Bon Jovi says of Sambora, who has said he left to focus on raising his daughter amid his divorce from Heather Locklear . “But just to be clear, there was nothing but love. There was never a fight. Ultimately being in a rock band is not a life sentence. He had to deal with his other issues.”

In the band’s new Hulu docuseries , Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story (streaming Friday, April 26), Sambora looks back on leaving.

“I don’t regret leaving the situation, but I regret how I did it,” Sambora says in the show, “so I want to apologize fully right now to the fans, especially, and also to the guys because my feet and my spirit were just not letting me walk out the door.”

In 2013, the members of Bon Jovi were returning from a break during the start of a world tour when Sambora was a no-show — and never rejoined the tour or the band.

“We were all shocked,” Bon Jovi says. “It was a show that night … and he just didn't show up. And then the next night, and then the next night … We had 120 people on the road, 80 other shows to do. So the train kept going.”

Looking back, “it was the end of a chapter for the band,” Bon Jovi says. “Difficult, but, you know, life goes on.”

Bon Jovi also notes that he invited Sambora over to his home to watch three-fourths of the docuseries together, adding: "There’s never animosity."

However, a Sambora source tells PEOPLE that "Richie flew out to see Jon and brought him a birthday present — a really nice guitar — but they screened Jon's documentary instead. Richie left after the third episode because he was sick and tired of what he was seeing."

The source continues: "He didn't like the way he was being cast. He disagrees with how they framed his departure from the band and to him, the currency of happiness is more important than the currency of money."

On June 7 the group — which currently includes Bon Jovi, Bryan and Torres, as well as percussionist Everett Bradley, bassist Hugh McDonald, guitarist John Shanks and guitarist Phil X — will release its upcoming 16th album, Forever , their third since Sambora left. The record is also the first since Bon Jovi underwent vocal cord surgery in 2022.

“The thing that gave me so much pleasure had been taken away,” Bon Jovi says of his vocal cord issues, adding that the new LP “is really about my finding joy again. What really matters in a life? It’s love and loyalty and finding things that make you want to get up out of bed in the morning.”

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

A four-part, five-hour documentary devoted to one of the more anodyne groups of classic rock, Hulu’s Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story is a competently made yet protracted survey of 40 years of big ballads and bigger hair.

For the band’s legions of fans there will admittedly be much to relish here. Combining archive treasures, concert clips and contemporary interviews, the show delves into the band’s history, revisits their mid-1980s rise and goes backstage on the eve of an anniversary comeback. But viewers who only know enough of “Livin’ on a Prayer” to get through an end-of-night singalong will probably be left wondering how they could possibly be only halfway there after two-and-a-half hours.

At the centre of the show is of course the eponymous frontman Jon Bon Jovi. A born performer whose outsized ambitions of stardom quickly outgrew his modest New Jersey origins, he makes for a curiously unengaging storyteller here. Though he fosters a certain intimacy by inviting the cameras to follow him through his present-day rehearsal routine and recovery from vocal-cord surgery, his contributions offer little more than platitudes that fail to penetrate the professional surface.

So while there’s plenty of earnest talk about dreams, determination, evolution, legacy and giving “102 per cent”, there’s barely a flash of humour or humility. Some comments are gratingly self-congratulatory and are indicative of a wider sense of indulgence that hangs over the show.

Other bandmates — such as ex-guitarist Richie Sambora and drummer Tico Torres — provide an injection of personality and a contrast to the singer’s clean-cut image; though anecdotes from their era of excess are kept vague. Detail and original insight is also missing in discussions surrounding creative decisions or the tensions that led to hiatuses and line-up changes. And the fact that Sambora’s abrupt 2013 exit came two decades after the group’s heyday inevitably dulls the impact of the band’s most notable bit of interpersonal drama.

That said, there’s nothing here that risks giving Bon Jovi a bad name or disappointing anyone that’s simply looking to revel in nostalgia for a time when “low IQ high RPM” tracks ruled the airwaves.

Thank you, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story joins the band in February 2022 and follows their real-time journey with its fits and starts as they attempt to chart out their future.

Bon Jovi opens the vault of 40 years of personal videos, unreleased early demos, original lyrics, and never-before-seen photos that chronicle the journey from Jersey Shore Clubs to the biggest stages on the planet. The series relives the triumphs and setbacks, greatest hits, biggest disappointments, and most public moments of friction.

Thank you, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story is directed and executive produced by Gotham Chopra. The film is also executive produced by Giselle Parets and Ameeth Sankaran for ROS, and it is produced and edited by Alex Trudeau Viriato, who played a critical, creative role in shaping the series.

Earlier this year, Bon Jovi opened up about recovering from vocal cord surgery and questioning if he could tour again after one of his cords was atrophied.
