The Top River Cruise Lines

Top River Cruises

Not one for the high seas? Explore the world along its rivers instead.

If you'd like to take a cruise but aren't interested in the hustle and bustle of a massive ocean liner, consider a river cruise. River cruises offer the chance to visit lesser-known ports around the world, thanks to the small size and maneuverability of the vessels. These sailings are known to provide exceptional, personalized service, as most welcome fewer than 200 guests at a time. On top of that, you'll spend the majority of your trip exploring a different port each day, as most destinations along the waterways are fairly close together.

Read on to discover the best river cruise lines around the world, with details about where they sail, the number of passengers you can expect onboard, a snapshot of amenities and experiences, and sentiment from recent travelers.

CroisiEurope Cruises

Viking Longship Idun on the Main River in front of Johannisburg Palace, Aschaffenburg, Germany.

Number of passengers: 75 to 250 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, U.S.

Viking's 60-plus ships – known as longships – traverse major rivers across Europe, including the Danube , the Rhine, the Douro and more. Other popular routes sail Egypt's Nile River as well as the Mississippi River , and newer options include a series of Great Lakes itineraries.

What to expect: Travelers may be familiar with Viking Ocean Cruises , which operates larger ocean voyages with an emphasis on opulent accommodations and diverse enrichment activities. Viking's river cruises follow a similar road map, with meals, daily walking tours and Wi-Fi access (where applicable) included in the base fare. Other amenities and activities span guest lectures, cooking demonstrations, musical performances, libraries, outdoor decks and more. Select Viking riverboats are also equipped with swimming pools, while cabins feature minibars, premium toiletries, purified water and TVs.

On board, you can expect to find mostly English-speaking passengers. Viking's price point generally attracts older crowds in the 55-plus age group, and travelers must be at least 18 years old to cruise on the line.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers thoroughly enjoyed their experience with Viking, praising the scenic shore excursions, top-notch service and comfortable rooms. Some, however, expressed disappointment with the service as well as the food.

Number of passengers: 32 to 159 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Uniworld offers luxurious sailings in historic cities across central Europe, France , Italy , Portugal , India, Egypt and Peru.

What to expect: Its 17 ships aim to create the feel of a boutique hotel with stylish decor, antique artwork and specialty restaurants. The ships hold an average capacity of 120 cruisers, and the company boasts one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios in the industry: about one crew member for every two travelers.

Stateroom amenities vary by vessel but may include marble bathrooms, Egyptian cotton linens, French balconies, iPod docking stations, Nespresso coffee machines, rainfall showers and more. The line's all-inclusive rates cover meals, alcoholic beverages, select excursions, gratuities, onboard fitness classes and Wi-Fi access, on top of entertainment and enrichment classes. Uniworld prides itself on its top-notch cuisine, which is made with local ingredients sourced from the ports on your itinerary and also includes vegetarian and vegan options.

Uniworld's typical clientele tend to be in their 50s or 60s and reside in North America, the U.K. and Australia . The river cruise line has select itineraries aimed at families, LGBTQ cruisers and solo travelers.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers offered abundant praise for Uniworld's voyages, complimenting the stylish accommodations, attentive staff and fascinating excursions. Though complaints were few and far between, a handful of past travelers felt the experience was not worth the high price point.

American Cruise Lines ship on river during sunset.

Courtesy of American Cruise Lines

Number of passengers: 90 to 180 Sails to:  U.S.

As the name suggests, American Cruise Lines sails exclusively on the rivers and coastlines of the United States. Popular cruises visit destinations along the Mississippi River, on the Hudson River, throughout New England , and lining the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line also tours Alaska , the Southeast coast including Florida , and the Puget Sound between Washington state and the Canadian border.

What to expect: American Cruise Lines operates 19 relatively new small ships and river vessels (the average ship is about 5 years old), ranging from modern riverboats to small coastal ships to authentic paddlewheelers. Comfortable cabins can accommodate up to three people per room, and all ships offer single staterooms designed exclusively for solo travelers . Each room boasts picture windows, a spacious bathroom and – in some cases – a private balcony. In the ships' public spaces, cruisers can enjoy daily onboard entertainment like jazz and blues performances, as well as presentations by historians and area experts.

The line promises an all-American experience. As such, you can expect to find American staff aboard the American-built ships as well as food that pays homage to the destinations you will visit, from New Orleans -style andouille sausage gumbo to New England-inspired seafood boils. Complimentary cocktails and hors d'oeuvres are served every night prior to dinner; all meals, snacks, and wine and beer are included in the base fare. Shore excursions are not typically included in the rate.

Passengers on American Cruise Lines tend to lean North American and are typically mature retired travelers.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers enjoyed their experience, particularly on the line's themed cruises.

Number of passengers: 28 to 196 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Consider a river cruise with AmaWaterways, whether you're looking to sail through the heart of Europe or seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure touring destinations like Vietnam, Egypt, South Africa or (beginning in 2024) Colombia. A family-owned business founded in 2002, AmaWaterways operates 29 river cruise boats that welcome 150 passengers on average.

The cruise line aims to provide excursion-rich experiences and offers unique themed sailings for passengers with certain interests. Wine-themed voyages are perfect for oenophiles wishing to explore some of Europe's most popular wine regions, while a concierge golf program will transport passengers from one famous golf course to the next. Or, opt for a holiday river cruise to visit magical Christmas markets around Europe. In 2024, AmaWaterways will offer three new Black history-themed itineraries.

What to expect: On board, guests can expect cabins suitable for couples or single travelers, as well as a set amount of connectible rooms designed for multigenerational families. Staterooms are spacious, with perks like bathrobes, slippers and plush bedding. Cabins can feature up to two balconies with AmaWaterways' twin balcony design, which allows for a full, step-out balcony alongside a French balcony with sliding glass doors. In-room Wi-Fi is complimentary, and guests will have access to movies and music on demand.

Outside of their cabins, passengers can enjoy amenities spanning small pools, sun decks, fitness equipment, a hair salon, massage services and more.

AmaWaterways primarily attracts North American travelers in their 50s who enjoy taking part in active shore excursions that involve walking or cycling. Passengers from the U.K. and Australia sail on this river cruise line as well. You can expect to find a mix of couples, families and solo cruisers – including a growing number of millennial travelers – on your vessel, thanks to AmaWaterways' diverse cabin offerings. Adventures by Disney charters AmaWaterways ships for select sailings each year as well.

What travelers say: Recent travelers say AmaWaterways exceeded their expectations, with many noting it was especially enjoyable for families. Still, some were disappointed, particularly with the food.

Number of passengers: 16 to 166 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Avalon Waterways sails 19 riverboats along popular thoroughfares like the Danube, the Rhone, the Seine, the Nile, the Rhine, the Moselle, the Mekong, the Ganges and more. In 2024, it will also sail the Douro River in Portugal.

What to expect: Launched in 2004, Avalon stands out for its spacious vessels – known as Suite Ships – which feature some of the largest rooms in the river cruise industry and beds that face wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows, providing panoramic views. Additional stateroom perks include complimentary breakfast in bed, L'Occitane toiletries, sitting areas, ample storage space and mattress toppers.

Across the ship, passengers can enjoy amenities like a sun deck with lounge chairs, whirlpools and a game area, in addition to numerous restaurants and bars and a 24-hour self-serve coffee station. You will also have your pick of Classic, Active or Discovery shore excursions – ranging from standard tours with a local guide to hiking outings along a hilltop castle – depending on your interests and physical abilities.

Avalon Waterways attracts English-speaking cruisers from a variety of countries, typically in their 50s and 60s. However, children ages 8 and older are welcome on board (though there are no designated kids clubs), and some voyages draw younger or older passengers.

What travelers say: Most recent reviews are positive, with travelers highlighting the friendly, knowledgeable staff and tasty food.

Number of passengers: 84 to 130 Sails to:  Europe

Travel company Tauck wears multiple hats: It operates small-ship voyages around the world, land tours across seven continents, small group journeys for an average of 24 travelers at a time, family tours and – finally – European river cruises. Six new river itineraries in Europe are on the docket for 2024. Take your pick from nine river vessels to explore popular waterways like the Douro, the Moselle, the Rhine, the Danube and the Rhone.

What to expect: All-inclusive fares cover shore excursions, onboard activities and entertainment, gratuities, beverages and more. Plus, Tauck offers exclusive access to unforgettable experiences like wine tastings at private vineyards and gala dinners in historic castles.

More than 80% of the staterooms feature French balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing for excellent views. Other in-room amenities may include adjustable climate controls, satin linens, pillow-top mattresses, terry cloth robes and more. Outside of your cabin, you'll find perks such as a sun deck, a putting green, enrichment programs like cooking demonstrations, a fitness center and complimentary bikes for onshore exploring.

Tauck caters to affluent, English-speaking cruisers – primarily Americans in the 55-and-older age group – though you may also find families with adult children on board. The line appeals most to travelers who prefer all the details of their trip to be taken care of for them, versus those who like to plan activities independent of the cruise line.

What travelers say: Recent passengers generally speak highly of their Tauck river cruise experiences, pointing to the exceptional level of organization and spacious, luxurious accommodations. Others said they were underwhelmed for the price.

Number of passengers: 84 to 180 Sails to:  Europe, Asia

Previously known as Emerald Waterways, Emerald Cruises transports travelers across some of the most popular rivers in Europe and Asia, including the Danube, the Rhine, the Douro and the Mekong.

What to expect: The cruise fare covers all meals, beverages with lunch and dinner, daily shore excursions − which include more physically rigorous options called EmeraldACTIVE – Wi-Fi access and gratuities.

Emerald operates nine river vessels, all of which boast luxurious public spaces and accommodations with en suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. Common-area amenities span heated indoor pools, sun decks, spa and wellness facilities, and a variety of eateries. Onboard fitness classes are available, as are other forms of entertainment. On shore, cruisers can borrow bicycles to explore historic city centers.

Typical clientele aboard Emerald Cruises' voyages includes American and British passengers around retirement age, though some younger travelers may make an appearance as well. Children 12 and older are permitted on board and on tours, but there are no kids clubs or designated activities for younger cruisers. Special rooms and dinner reservations are available for solo travelers.

What travelers say: Cruisers on recent sailings – especially first-time sailors – enjoyed their experiences on Emerald Cruises. High points included the attentive crew members and the stress-free booking and planning process. However, some felt that customer service and communication were subpar.

Number of passengers: 68 to 163 Sails to: Europe, Asia

From the Danube to the Mekong, Australian travel company Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours offers lavish, all-inclusive river sailings with an emphasis on customization. The more upscale sister brand of Emerald Cruises, Scenic affords travelers the opportunity to do as much or as little as they want while on board and ashore.

What to expect: Enrichment activities are hand-picked by the line's "Journey Designers," and vessels provide a top-notch level of service thanks to their high crew-to-passenger ratios. In fact, each passenger receives a designated butler who can complete nightly turndowns and make laundry arrangements, among other tasks.

Spacious suites on board are larger than those on most other riverboats (ranging from 160 to 510 square feet). High-tech balcony controls allow lodgers to let in as much air as they'd like with the touch of a button. Cruisers will also enjoy special in-room touches like pillow menus, slippers and robes.

When it comes to dining, Scenic sources local ingredients and culinary inspiration from the ports visited on the itinerary to provide an authentic experience. All meals are included in the base cruise fare, along with beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions and electric bicycle usage in select destinations.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers were pleased with their experiences aboard Scenic's vessels, praising the spacious cabins, pampering butler service, and knowledgeable crew members and tour guides. However, some travelers were particularly disappointed with the food.

Side view of CroisiEurope Cruises river cruise ship.

Helwin Goetzinger | Courtesy of CroisiEurope

Number of passengers: 22 to 200 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers echoed that some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, while others maintain that the experience was superb.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Size: River cruise ships are smaller in size and the number of passengers they can accommodate, with one lounge and one main dining room being a typical setup.
  • Atmosphere: The overall vibe on a river cruise is more relaxed and far less busy than that of an ocean liner.
  • Onboard entertainment: River cruising is notoriously sleepy at night, with a focus instead on local enrichment like cooking demonstrations or liqueur tastings. Due to the busy schedule of port calls and excursions, most passengers are tired after a long day of sightseeing and don't mind a lack of nightlife.
  • Excursions: Most of your time on a river cruise is spent out exploring the destinations, which can sometimes be two stops in a single day. Passengers can choose from a variety of activities in port – including biking, kayaking and hiking – or explore the destination at a leisurely pace.
  • Cuisine: Cuisine tends to be focused on local specialties but is prepared to accommodate predominantly American tastes. Not every river cruise line offers unlimited drinks, but the majority include beer and wine at lunch and dinner, often showcasing regional varieties.
  • Price: River cruising typically comes at a much higher price point than ocean-based itineraries.
  • American Queen

Note that inclusions can vary by cruise line. For example, Viking rates – while not fully all-inclusive – cover beer and wine at meals and one tour per day, while gratuities and other drink packages are left to the discretion of the guest.

Avalon Waterways, on the other hand, offers a number of included tours in every port on select itineraries that range from cultural or culinary-focused to active.

In terms of inclusions and service ratios (the number of crew on board to guests), the following river cruise lines are considered the most luxurious:

About River Cruises

A River Cruise offers a unique cruise experience. Your ship is your home away from home that will take you past exciting cities, quaint villages and beautiful landscapes. One of the best things about a river cruise is that they dock right in the heart of each city that is visited putting you in the center of it all. You can choose to explore on your own or take one of the many excursions offered. Most river cruises offer a complimentary excursion in each port.

River ships are considerably smaller than ocean vessels, usually accommodating a maximum of 200 guests. The river cruise experience is intimate allowing for a truly personalized and friendly service. Cabins are spacious and feature many comfortable and luxurious amenities. Many offer floor to ceiling windows, with some even offering full balconies.

One of the most important aspects of any cruise is the incredible dining that one experiences. River cruises offer gourmet menus made with the freshest local ingredients. The culinary masterpieces highlight the many traditional specialties in each region often paired with a variety of local wines.

River cruises are offered throughout the world. In Europe you can sail on the Rhine, the Danube, the Rhone, the Douro River (Portugal), the Po River, Italy, Russia and more. Asia can be explored on the Yangtze and Mekong Rivers as well as on the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar (Burma). In Africa you can sail on the Nile or choose from a host of itineraries in Southern Africa that include the Chobe River, Kruger National Park in South Africa and the Serengeti in Kenya.

Amazon River

Very few river cruises can be compared to a cruise on the Amazon river. Your journey begins in the city of Lima as you take in the Peru's history and colonial architecture. Then you will travel high into the Andes mountains to explore Cusco, the Sacred Valley and the incredible city of Machu Picchu. Also known as the "Lost City of the Incas", Machu Picchu is a very awe-inspiring and spiritual place.

Iquitos is where your tour of the Peruvian Amazon begins. The Amazon river is fed by a vast network of tributaries and is home to some of the most isolated communities in the world. It is also home to one of the most diverse populations of wildlife. During your cruise, you will encounter and have the chance to interact with local people living in villages along the Amazon River, as they have for centuries.

A chateau along the Rhone south of Vienne as seen from a Viking Longship

A First Timer's Guide to River Cruising

book river cruise

Sponsored by Viking

From the Sun Deck of Viking Hermod it was an intimate, unscripted traveler’s dream, sharing the waterway with kayakers, fishermen, swans and children splashing and waving to us from the water. Vineyards climbed the hills around the Rhône River , with chateaux and villages lined along the river’s edge. Gliding down this river somewhere south of Vienne, France, I realized how much I loved this pace of sightseeing, a real luxury in a hurried world.

In this piece, I’ll look at what it’s like to take a river cruise for the first time, how it differs from ocean cruising, and tips for getting the most out of this unique experience. Whether you’re a lifelong cruise lover or a first-timer, a Viking river cruise will deliver a quintessential European adventure that will have you ready to book your next river cruise as soon as you get back home.

Immerse Yourself in the Region and Experience Local Life on Excursions

Truffle hunting on a Viking shore excursion

The iconic destinations are undoubtedly the stars of the show in river cruising, and the best cruises show them off at every turn. While river ships don’t have the myriad of entertainment found on many ocean vessels, Viking is known for bringing the region’s culture onboard with tastings of local specialties, music performances, and engaging presentations. It’s a thoughtful supplement to what you’ll experience on shore.

A double-cream truffle-layered cheesecake on a Viking River Cruises excursion

Spend some time before sailing getting to know your destination and the excursions. Viking offers a complimentary tour daily, but with overnights in many ports, there is time to enjoy additional captivating options. Tasting the different types of cuisine as you pass through each region is an absolute highlight – cutting through a double-cream, truffle-layered cheesecake next to the farmer’s dog who found the truffles was one of many hyperlocal experiences possible with a river ship’s small groups and full-day tours. It was certainly my most delicious.

Take Advantage of Docking Right in the City and Go Exploring

A Viking Longship in Tournon France

A river cruise lends itself to spontaneity with direct access to destinations. There are no tenders or cities an hour from where you dock. In Lyon, France, the riverside park full of picnickers, cyclists, and bocce ball players right outside the ship compelled me to step out, grabbing a city map on the way off the ship. The afternoon spent lingering in the medieval alleys and Renaissance streets I first spotted on the earlier tour with Viking during the Lyon & Provence itinerary had me hooked on river cruising.

It wasn't just Lyon. I stepped directly out into ancient Roman ruins in Vienne , a castle's sycamore-lined square in Tournon, and the sun-washed walls of Avignon. Make sure to get out and explore on your own. Whether you find a new favorite pastry shop, return to the interesting street from your tour, sample a glass of local wine and watch the world go by, you'll make delightful and unexpected memories. Just remember to pack good walking shoes.

Be Prepared To Make New Friends At Meals

Breakfast on the Aquavit Terrace (Credit: Viking)

Long and lean river ships maximize space for their guests, and one difference between river and ocean cruising is that there are fewer dining areas and seating times on the river. At first, my natural introversion went on high alert as I realized there were no tables for two in the restaurant. Yet, over the course of my eight-day journey, I encountered delightful fellow travelers with enthralling stories.

Embrace the conviviality of the more intimate setting with a smaller group of guests on river cruises. Get to know your tablemates, and don't be surprised if, at the next dinner, you're looking for faces who were strangers a few days ago, hoping to dine together again.

If you do want a more private dinner or simply to dine al fresco, the tables on Viking's Aquavit Terrace seat two or four. Just arrive promptly; they go fast.

Rooms are Spacious and Bright, But This Tip May Help Your View

Viking Longship Veranda Stateroom

I expected that forsaking the size of ocean vessels meant losing space and comfort, particularly in the staterooms. Yet that is not the case on Viking ships. Design elements like precise utility from every surface and Scandinavian aesthetic, make staterooms feel more spacious. Viking’s Longship fleet also has off-set corridors that create a tremendous selection of stateroom classes, comparable to or even larger than many ocean rooms on larger vessels. Most rooms on Viking’s signature Longships have either a floor-to-ceiling French balcony or a walk-out veranda, letting light fill the space. Viking also has some of the largest suites sailing European rivers.

As delightful as Viking’s Longship was, I wasn't ready for how river ships occasionally dock tightly side-to-side, allowing more than one ship to use port. The only impact is that at some destinations your view may be into another room, otherwise blocked by the sister ship. River cruising pros and new dinner friends quietly shared this sworn-by secret: call ahead when reserving and ask the booking specialist to put you on the side least likely to snuggle up with other ships throughout the journey.

Savor a Spot On the Sun Deck When Sailing

Cruising the Rhone River on a Viking River cruise

There is no better view on a river cruise than the panoramic Sun Deck, especially when sailing. My heart-swelling moment waving to the children on the river bank was one of many on the ship's top deck that pulled my attention away from any attempt to read. Happily, Viking provided plenty of chairs, so there was no need for the frantic rush to snag or save seats.

However, the deck is not always available, as passing under low bridges is sometimes a game of inches. Even when it is not restricted, there are times when the crew fold the canopies down, and you must remain briefly seated for low bridges. Grab a drink, sunglasses and relax. Just make sure to pay attention to the crew's clear instructions when approaching bridges.

Have a Camera – And Umbrella – Ready in the River's Locks

Passengers raising umbrellas as they pass through a lock

Sailing through a system of river locks is an unusual and mesmerizing experience unique to river cruising. These ingenious engineering feats allow boats to climb upstream or descend downstream with manufactured "steps'' in the river. I was astonished watching the midday sunlight fade as our ship lowered in the lock, my fingers grazing the green algae on the now towering concrete walls less than a foot from the ship's side. I wasn't the only one. When the metal barrier creakily raised to release us and massive gates swung open, another passenger called out that it was like being in a medieval-period movie.

This raising and lowering ritual has one lesson you must learn. As the metal gate that sealed the lock rises, water will pour off in a brief torrent as you pass under. If you're out on the Sun Deck or Aquavit Terrace, you and your belongings may get wet unless you take cover. Viking crew distributed red umbrellas in anticipation, and there were always chuckles amongst the passengers as we ducked under. On the river everything is an adventure.

River Cruising Brings Out the Best In Both the Journey and Destination

A couple on the Aquavit Terrace of a Viking Longship

Too often in my travels I’ve scurried about, checking a sightseeing box only to be left wanting more later. River cruising with Viking slowed things down, allowing me to enjoy the nostalgic journey down one of Europe’s great waterways, sailing in understated luxury. Yet, I was surprised by how much river cruising opens up the destinations – both the iconic cities and smaller towns. With more time in ports and Viking’s diverse cultural, adventure and culinary tour options, I came away with personal stories and a real sense of place.

Only my feeling of wanting more was incurable and even heightened by the pleasures of river cruising. I found myself nodding along with a table of women next to me on Viking’s Aquavit Terrace. Strangers just a week ago, they were plotting their next river cruise, with or without spouses. I knew I wouldn’t be the only one scrolling through river options on the way home.

Explore America’s Most Iconic Waterways With the 5 Best U.S. River Cruises

Discover natural and cultural treasures close to home.

book river cruise

You don't need to fly to Europe for a river cruise, with new ships and routes creating even more options right here in the United States. Some of the most scenic itineraries traverse the Mississippi, Hudson, Columbia, and Snake rivers, showcasing natural, cultural, and historical attractions along the way. Passengers can visit wineries in Washington, taste Creole cuisine in New Orleans, or learn about the Siege of Vicksburg right where it happened.

On these voyages, you'll sail with anywhere from 100 to 400 other guests aboard either modern riverboats or classic paddle wheelers that hearken back to a different time. Like their European counterparts, river cruises in the U.S. typically package everything at a single price, including staterooms, meals, guest lectures and enrichment programs, entertainment, and most shore excursions. Some even include pre-cruise hotel stays.

Here are five river cruises that will show you the U.S. in a whole new light.

American Cruise Lines’ Music Cities Cruise from Memphis to Nashville

It's hard to choose from American Cruise Lines' 35 itineraries. For arts and culture lovers, the eight-day Music Cities Cruise along the Mississippi, Ohio, and Cumberland rivers presents an opportunity to visit several charming cities and towns in the South. The itinerary is offered on four different 180-passenger ships, including the American Serenade and the classic American Splendor paddle wheeler.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

The voyage begins in Memphis, where passengers can visit the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, take in a show at one of the nightclubs along legendary Beale Street, or tour Elvis Presley's mansion, Graceland. After a day of cruising, the ship stops at Paducah, Kentucky, where you can admire the more than 50 murals on the floodwall along Water Street before exploring the National Quilt Museum. The next day, the ship travels through the Barkley Lock and past the stunning coves and limestone bluffs of the Cumberland River's Lake Barkley– a view best enjoyed from the balcony of your stateroom. In Dover, Tennessee, guests visit historic Fort Donelson National Park and learn about the garrison's role during the Civil War. The next day, passengers can tour the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center and Fort Defiance in Clarksville, Tennessee, and cap off the experience with a whiskey tasting at Old Glory Distilling Co. The voyage ends in Nashville, where you can stroll along historic Lower Broadway, visit museums dedicated to Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline, and take in a Grand Ole Opry show.

American Queen Voyages' Upper Mississippi Cruise from St. Louis to Minneapolis

History buffs will love this nine-day cruise along the Upper Mississippi and Illinois rivers aboard American Queen Voyages' 245-passenger American Countess paddle wheeler. The itinerary offers guests a chance to explore the idyllic river towns that inspired the Father of American Literature.

A first-timer's guide to river cruising

Everything you need to know if you're new to river cruising

river cruising for first timers

If you've never been on a river cruise before, you've come to the right place, as we've answered some of the most common questions travellers ask before embarking on their first sailing.

From why a river cruise might be better for you than an ocean cruise, to what to expect and the dress code for river ships, you'll want to keep reading for our first-timer's guide to river cruising.

Why should I choose a river cruise over a cruise at sea?

A river cruise is a more boutique cruising option and is ideal for travellers looking for their first cruising experience. With smaller ships and fewer passengers on board, river cruises feel more intimate and relaxed.

They're also a more cost-effective way of having a big adventure, as you’ll visit a variety of places over the course of the trip, meaning you can tick various destinations off your travel bucketlist for the price of one holiday. Many river cruises are also all-inclusive, which means you don’t have to think about the day-to-day costs of your holiday.

Eco-conscious travellers might also want to choose a river cruise over an ocean voyage, as smaller ships are kinder to the environment than larger vessels.

river cruise guide

Unlike cruises at sea , river cruises usually take you to the centre of the city you're visiting so you can do more sightseeing and spend less time making your way to the destination. The ports are the main attraction on a river cruise, so you can tick more beautiful places off your travel bucket list.

river cruise guide for first timers

You'll also find that river cruise ships are less entertainment-packed than larger cruise ships , which often impress travellers with sprawling water parks, theatres and cinemas.

On a river cruise, the entertainment is more low-key and could include live music in a lounge bar, an educational seminar, or a cooking demonstration - as on our cruise of Bordeaux with Raymond Blanc.

What can I expect on a river cruise?

Depending on the ship and destinations you visit, there's plenty to experience on a river cruise holiday. Throughout your trip, you can enjoy excursions and activities in the location you're visiting, as you would on a land-based holiday.

This could involve wine tastings and vineyard tours, which will be a big part of our cruises through Bordeaux and the Douro Valley this year. Other itineraries might take you to iconic historic monuments, like our cruise through Venice , which includes a visit to St Mark's Basilica for an atmospheric lighting ceremony and VIP access to Doge's palace during an early morning visit.

Unlike a cruise at sea, a river cruise allows you to be immersed in nature and feel closer to the surroundings as you make your way down rivers, such as the Douro , or the waterways of Venice .

While on board, you can expect a range of cabin types, from spacious rooms with queen beds to luxurious suites with lounge areas, walk-in wardrobes and private balconies. You might also find loungers on the sun decks for you to soak up the sun as you drift along the waterways.

Scenic Diamond, for example, which you can experience on a French river cruise with chef Raymond Blanc , features a stylish sun deck and a swimming pool, sparkling marble interiors, chic furnishings, and first-class suites.

With multiple onboard restaurants, you’ll be able to sample a number of cuisines during your trip, and Scenic Diamond even has its own cookery school, Scenic Culinaire where you can enjoy live demonstrations and classes.

river cruise guide

Most river cruise ships are expertly designed to allow you to appreciate glorious landscapes and cityscapes you'll be passing. Take the lovely A-Rosa Alva, for example, your home-from-home on our eight-day cruise along the Douro . This boutique ship is specifically designed to allow you to soak in the glorious views along the Douro River and boasts a sun deck with recliners, a heated outdoor pool and panoramic windows in most of the cabins.

Many ships also have complimentary bikes so you can explore your surroundings more fully when you disembark at a port.

Tell me more about the ships...

There are different types of river cruise ships and it will depend on the destination you choose as to which ship serves the route. What many have in common are facilities to ensure you can relax on board, as well as welcoming cabins and friendly service to make you feel at home in a boutique space.

river cruise guide

You won't find inside cabins on river cruise ships and as these vessels are smaller overall compared to their ocean counterparts, the cabins are smaller too. A river cruise ship could have around 60 to 90 cabins, while some of the ships at sea have thousands of cabins for passengers.

As the entertainment is more modest compared to what you'll find on a large cruise ship , the evenings can be spent in the lounge with a cocktail and enjoying some live music.

How do I know if a river cruise is for me?

A river cruise is ideal if you're looking to slow down from the hectic pace of everyday life and soak up the beauty of a variety of destinations.

Many river cruise itineraries are suited to lovers of culture who like to visit fascinating cities, too. Our cruise of the Venetian Lagoon , for instance, will take you to many of the region's best cultural monuments, including St Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace, and the Santa María Asunta Basilica on Torcello.

Our boutique cruise around Venice also allows you to explore the Italian city without the stresses of having to navigate boat timetables or getting from one part of the city to the next.

river cruise guide

Travellers who prefer to keep moving can visit a different location every day. For example, on a cruise around Bordeaux and the Medoc with Raymond Blanc, you'll experience historic Blaye Fortress, the lively farmers markets of Libourne, and medieval Saint-Emilion. If you’re someone who likes your holidays packed with experiences, an excursion-rich river cruise like this could be an excellent choice.

River cruises are also enjoyable for travellers who don't drive or don't fancy planning a rail trip, as your transport is all taken care of. This is especially helpful if you are visiting wine country, like Bordeaux or the Douro Valley – you can enjoy tastings worry-free without having to arrange a taxi or appoint a designated driver.

river cruise guide

Will I have to organise my own shore excursions?

Another benefit of a river cruise holiday is handing over the planning and organisation of your trip to the professionals. You don’t need to figure out where you’re going or how you’ll get there, you can just sit back and enjoy your holiday as it unfolds.

Whether you like gourmet tastings and guided walks, visits to vineyards and olive farms, or browsing local farmers' markets, you'll find a range of excursions included in the price of your trip.

river cruising for first timers

Trips to food markets, walking tours around historical sites and the chance to get active exploring the scenery by bike are just a few of the amazing ways to get to know the destinations you're visiting.

Although an exciting schedule of activities will be arranged for you, there's usually a fair amount of free time factored into your itinerary, which you can either use to relax and make the most of the onboard facilities - or explore a little more on your own.

Is there a dress code?

The dress code for river cruises is typically smart casual, despite the often sumptuous interiors of the boats. You can leave your heels and ties at home for most river cruise holidays and consider them a city break on water, where you'll want to spend your days in comfortable clothing and footwear for exploring the highlights, and your evenings in smart casual attire as you relax and socialise in the onboard bars and restaurants.

river cruise guide

What you pack will depend on what's on your itinerary. Although most river cruises have a casual atmosphere, you could pack some smarter clothes if you have free time in cities like Paris and Venice , where you might want to visit some of the fancier restaurants and bars.

The dress code can also vary depending on the ship and theme of your cruise, so it’s best to check when you book.

Cruise Ship of Ferry?

There are usually two choices to visit Huangpu River by water: Cruise and Ferry. The cruise ship is the first choice for most tourists to visit Shanghai . The sailing time is about 50 minutes, and the ferry is important for public transportation connecting Pudong and Puxi. If you don't want to spend too much time by cruise ship, the ferry between Pudong and Puxi can also be used as an alternative. Ferry ships run from Jinling East Road Ferry (7:00-22:00) to Dongchang Road Ferry in Pudong. It takes about 10 minutes one way and runs every 15 minutes. There are also ferry ships between Fuxing East Road Ferry (7:00-19:00) and Dongchang Road Ferry (7:00-18:45), with an interval of every half hour. What to See with Huangpu River Cruise

The Huangpu River, which is about 113 kilometers long with a width of 300 to 700 meters, flows through Shanghai. It is the symbol and the essence of Shanghai's city landscape. The Bund and Binjiang Avenue beside the Huangpu River are excellent scenic spots. Walking along the riverside, you can see many international architectures rich in exotic color and style lining up on the West Bank of the Huangpu River in sharp contrast to the modern skyscrapers towering into the clouds on the east bank, beautiful bridges, memorial towers, and parks, from which you can get a glimpse of Shanghai's development and its history.

Taking a Huangpu River cruise is the most relaxing way to have a general understanding of the past, present, and future of Shanghai in a very short time.

Waibaidu Bridge

This bridge is situated at the lower reach of Suzhou Creek and the west side of Huangpu Park, linking with Huangpu River. It is the first all-steel bridge, and the only surviving example of camelback truss bridge. Waibaidu Bridge is a component of Shanghai skyline.

Monument to the People's Heroes

Stably standing at the south of Huangpu River, it is built in the stylized shape of three rifles leaning against each other. It symbolizes the Chinese people and armies seek for freedom to fight against the aggression in modern history.

Huangpu Park

Built in 1886, it was the first park in China open to the public which can be called the witness for the changing of Bund. This park is a blending of Monument to People’s Heroes, The Bund Historical Museum, 120-meter long and 3.8-meter high relief, garden scenery, etc.

When you look at the east bank of Huangpu River, you’ll get amazed by the prosperous financial district of Lujiazui with magnificently standing, futuristic buildings and symbolic towers, etc.

  • Shanghai World Financial Center

Known as a global magnet, Shanghai World Financial Center is at a height of 492 meters and 101 floors, being the third tallest building in China. Travelers can experience the thrilling sky walk at the 100th floor at 474 meters and have panoramic view of Shanghai.

Jinmao Tower

Used to be the tallest building in China, Jinmao Tower is standing at 420.5 meters with 93 floors. It is a multi-functional modern building with offices, five-star hotel, conference and exhibition center, entertainment, restaurants and shopping malls, etc. Travelers can have bird’s eye view of Shanghai at the 88th floor.

Day Cruise VS Night Cruise: Which One to Choose?

Do you feel a little difficult whether to choose a day cruise or a night cruise? There is no need to worry about the schedules for Huangpu River cruises which are available from 11:00 till 21:30.

The night view of the Pujiang River is unmissable. At night, both sides of the Huangpu River are brilliantly illuminated, and you can start from the Shiliupu Wharf or Qinhuangdao Wharf and travel on the river. The Yangpu Bridge and Nanpu bridge across the Huangpu River, are just like jade belts. The beautiful Pudong Binjiang Avenue and the unique Shanghai International Convention Center, have formed a beautiful scenery line under the gorgeous lighting, which is dazzling. The boat provides Chinese food, Western food, a buffet, and other services. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Huangpu River and have delicious food at the same time.

Most of the travelers choose to take a cruise at night to appreciate the spectacular light show with dazzling lights from the skyscrapers. With a delightful mood, you can either stay in the cabin or stand quietly on the sundeck to enjoy the amazing night view. Especially for those who have a short time in Shanghai, taking a night cruise after Shanghai day tour covered highlighted tourist attractions is highly recommended.

Travelers who take a Huangpu River cruise in the daytime can have clear sightseeing along the banks both on the west side and east side. It is suitable for travelers who have flexible time with no hurry to visit other tourist spots that have limited entrance hours. It is recommended to do day cruise in the spring and autumn seasons and try to avoid the hot summertime.

The 7 Best Mississippi River Cruises for 2024

T he more than 2,300-mile Mississippi River invites travelers to discover its multifaceted heritage, with a vast range of deeply rooted culture, music and history. A cruise is a fantastic way to discover many of the riverfront cities on a single trip, from the comfort of your modern riverboat or traditional paddle-wheeler.

The following Mississippi River cruise itineraries can help you choose from cruises of various lengths and options for the Lower and Upper Mississippi. Note that all fares are listed as double occupancy (based on two people per cabin), and that they might not reflect taxes, port fees or gratuities. The itinerary availability listed is also subject to change.

American Cruise Lines

American Cruise Lines operates small ships accommodating between 90 and 180 passengers that are built, flagged and crewed in the U.S. – and it's the only company in the world operating a 100% U.S.-flagged fleet of riverboats and cruise ships. ACL's itineraries traverse waterways across 35 states, with 11 itineraries dedicated to the Mississippi River. Cruisers can choose to sail on modern riverboats with a sleek interior design or while away their time aboard classic paddle-wheelers reminiscent of days gone by.

ACL offers variety as well as versatility: This line boasts both the longest and shortest sailings on this list with cruises ranging from eight to 60 days in length, including The Great United States. This inaugural 60-day voyage spans four major rivers and 20 states, making it the longest U.S. river cruise in history.

Complimentary hotel and transportation packages are available from every departure city before your cruise. You can book certain premium packages for added perks, such as two nights spent next door to Graceland in Memphis – with VIP tickets and a city tour included in the price.

Music Cities Cruise

Length: Eight days

Price: Starts at $3,610 per person

Spend a week getting lost in the sounds of the Memphis blues, rock 'n' roll and country music legends on the seven-night Music Cities Cruise. A hotel stay the night before your sailing is included, but embarking in Memphis means you also have the chance to splurge on a two-night pre-cruise package near Elvis' former home Graceland .

Ports of call include Paducah, Kentucky; Dover, Tennessee; and Clarksville, Tennessee, with an overnight in Nashville and an included excursion to a show at the Grand Ole Opry. Two scenic sailing days feature picturesque views of America's Heartland along the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland rivers as well as Lake Barkley.

2024 dates: In 2024, there are two available itineraries in September and November.

Grand Heartland Cruise: St. Paul to New Orleans

Length: 15 days

Price: Starts at $9,455 per person

This 15-day voyage allows you to explore America's rich history in towns along the Upper and Lower Mississippi River. The immersive voyage covers six states and 12 cities including St. Paul, Minnesota ; Dubuque, Iowa; St. Louis, Missouri ; Memphis, Tennessee; Natchez, Mississippi; Baton Rouge, Louisiana ; and more.

Take a step back in time while visiting Mark Twain's boyhood home in Hannibal, exploring stately historic estates in Natchez and Civil War sites in Vicksburg. At the end of a busy day ashore, you'll have plenty to chat about with fellow passengers during the evening cocktail hour.

2024 dates: American Heritage – ACL's traditional paddle-wheeler – and three modern riverboats set off on this journey from August to October in 2024.

Complete Mississippi River Cruise: New Orleans to St. Paul

Length: 22 days

Price: Starts at $14,935 per person

If you want to see the entire Mississippi in one shot, check out this multiweek sailing that begins in New Orleans and ends in St. Paul, Minnesota. Along the way, you'll sail 1,393 miles, visit 10 states and experience a staggering 20 ports of call as you tour Louisiana and then head northbound to Minnesota.

In the South, walk the battlefields of the Civil War and sample delicious Southern barbecue before listening to the rhythms of jazz, the blues and rock 'n' roll. Then, explore the small and larger cities along the upper parts of the river. Remember to take time to gaze out at the picturesque scenery and the rolling farmlands of America's Midwest before disembarking in St. Paul.

2024 dates: Three of ACL's modern riverboats sail this itinerary in May, June and August in 2024.

The Great United States

Length: 60 days

Price: Starts at $51,000

This two-month long journey – the longest domestic itinerary ever created – will check all the boxes for U.S. history and Civil War buffs, music and nature lovers, culinary enthusiasts, and beer and distilled spirits aficionados alike as the ship traverses America's iconic waterways through 20 states and 50 ports of call.

This epic journey showcases the natural beauty and living history of the U.S. from sea to shining sea. The sailing embarks in Portland, Oregon , on the Pacific Coast before traveling east to the Atlantic shore along four major rivers that highlight some of the country's most stunning coastlines. Upon arrival in New York Harbor, guests will have an unforgettable view of one of the most iconic landmarks in the U.S.: the Statue of Liberty .

Passengers can follow in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark along the Snake and Columbia rivers; cruise along Ol' Man River in search of Mark Twain and Elvis; see the vibrant colors of fall during peak season on the Hudson River; and take in the coastal breezes (and fresh seafood) along New England's rocky coastline.

This curated adventure also includes two flights: Jackson, Wyoming , to New Orleans as well as St. Paul to Portland, Maine , plus a land package through Glacier , Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. All-inclusive pricing covers the pre-cruise hotel stay, all flights and hotels between cruise segments, an ACL jacket and gear pack, daily excursions, all meals and beverages, gratuities and port charges, entertainment, and Wi-Fi.

2024 dates: The inaugural cruise sets sail on August 16, 2024.

Viking River Cruises

Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.

Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.

New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans

Price: Starts at $3,999 per person

If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.

2024 dates: This itinerary is available on select dates in February, November and December.

Heart of the Delta: New Orleans to Memphis

Length: Nine days

Price: Starts at $4,299 per person

Similar to its round-trip New Orleans Southern Charms itinerary, the Heart of the Delta cruise begins in New Orleans and calls on the same five ports, before sailing through the Lower Mississippi and disembarking in Memphis. Enjoy scenic views of the serpentine river route – perhaps with expert commentary or a local cooking demonstration – and then take time to explore the birthplace of the Memphis blues, which is also a center of civil rights history.

2024 dates: In 2024, this cruise is available in February, March, April, May, June and November.

America's Great River: St. Paul to New Orleans

Price: Starts at $12,999 per person

This Viking voyage sails from St. Paul to New Orleans on a two-week trip that calls on 13 ports with one day of scenic sailing. This itinerary combines the best of Viking's other Mississippi sailings for an all-encompassing Midwestern and Southern experience with 12 guided tours.

Included in the fare is a tour of Graceland; a stroll through small-town Burlington, Iowa, to see Snake Alley, deemed the most crooked street in the world; and a visit to the National Eagle Center of Red Wing, among others. For an additional fee, hop on an airboat ride through the Atchafalaya Swamp in Baton Rouge or tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery of St. Louis.

2024 dates: Viking has availability for this itinerary in July, September and October.
