PLEASE NOTE: ALL SCHEDULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE

The Cruise Director assignments and schedule is subject to change as the needs aboard different ships change. Schedules often overlap with another Cruise Director at the beginning and end assignments. This allows the new Cruise Directors to become accustomed to a new ship, and learn what activities and entertainment the ship offers.

The schedules are fluid and may also have gaps that will be filled closer to the actual calendar date in the future. Many famous cruise directors are not currently on the assignment schedule. This often only means they may be on vacation leave or haven’t finalized a contract commitment yet.

This schedule can change frequently, and if you want to sail with a particular cruise director, you should  check the schedule regularly  to learn where your favorite cruise director may be assigned.

List of Carnival Cruise Directors by Ship for August and September 2023

by Prof. Cruise · August 2, 2023

A cartoon "cruise director" with text that reads: List of Carnival cruise directors by ship for Aug and Sept 2023.

One of the most common questions I receive and see asked on cruise boards and social media sites is: Who will my cruise director be? To which there are always several follow up questions asked by new cruisers to the effect of: What the heck is a cruise director? Well I’m here to answer both of those questions! First…

What does a Cruise Director do?

Besides not sleep, smile through exhaustion and frustration, and dish out almost as many corny jokes as yours truly? Quite a lot! In fact, cruise directors are the most visible crew members onboard a cruise ship and often work up to 16 hours per day with no days off during their contract period (usually lasting around 4 months, but up to 9 months in some cases). While passengers will see them constantly out and about introducing shows, MC’ing activities and events, and interacting with guests, they are also responsible for behind-the-scenes scheduling and coordination of all entertainment and activities and certain safety protocols.

Many regular Carnival cruisers have a favorite cruise director they look forward to sailing with. So, let’s get to our second question, who will the cruise director be on my Carnival cruise?

Who will the Cruise Director be on my upcoming Carnival Cruise?

Wondering who the cruise director will be on your upcoming Carnival cruise? Find the list of cruise directors by ship for the months of August and September 2023 here.

Important notes: * There is usually a week of overlap in the contracts of a current cruise director and their replacement. So, if you’re booked on the last sailing of a certain cruise director, you may actually see more of their replacement who is gearing up to take over. I’ve noted the exact “sign-off” and “sign-on” dates during August and September for each cruise director where there is overlap. ** While I try my best to keep this up-to-date, schedules sometimes change at the last minute, so I can’t guarantee this will always be 100% accurate. If you need 100% certainty as to who your cruise director will be, I recommend asking John Heald, Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, via the “community” tab on his Facebook page a week or so before your sailing date. ***All photos courtesy of Carnival Cruise Line

Cruise Director schedule

Ah, the mysterious and much-anticipated Carnival Cruise Director Schedule ! Think of it as the entertainment compass for your cruise voyage. This schedule doesn’t just tell time; it paints a picture of who will be steering the ship’s entertainment wheel.

Ever experienced that ‘Oh, I know that voice!’ moment onboard? That’s because a cruise director’s essence is so impactful; they can significantly elevate the vacation experience. Believe it or not, having the right cruise director can transform an excellent cruise into an unforgettable one.

Every year, the Carnival Cruise Line unfurls its golden scroll, revealing the cruise director line-up for each ship in their grand fleet. This isn’t merely a list but a passport to entertainment excellence. Each entry announces the cruise director and their tenure on that ship.

However, a word of caution for all the eager planners out there: while this schedule is a beacon, it’s also fluid. Adjustments can and do happen. A unique aspect is the occasional overlap, where passengers might be treated to a duo of cruise directors. Imagine two maestros! But rest assured, one will always be at the helm.

For those sentimental souls (and aren’t we all a bit?), if a particular cruise director has ever made you laugh a tad harder or dance a bit wilder, this schedule can be your guide. Want to relive that magic? Just peek into the schedule to see if your favorite is onboard. Think of it less like a timetable and more like a treasure map. Instead of ‘X marks the spot’, it’s more ‘Who’s bringing the party tonight?’. This schedule decodes the maestros behind every laugh riot, dance-off, and evening extravaganza. It’s the unseen anchor that ensures smooth sailing in the world of entertainment. So, as you dive deeper into this nautical narrative, get ready to discover the stars steering your journey, one giggle, groove, and gala at a time.

John Heald carnival cruise director

John “The Brit With Wit” Heald : Oh, Johnny boy! No, he’s not the singer of a melodramatic song; he’s the legend with over three decades under his belt at Carnival. While he might have traded in his cruise director hat for the glittery tiara of a “Brand Ambassador”, his unmistakable British humor still reigns supreme.

If you’re cruising around on the ‘www’, hoping to spot John’s cruise director schedule, brace yourself for disappointment. But hey, the silver lining – he’s just one click away on his uproarious Facebook Page, where he’s practically the agony aunt for Carnival enthusiasts.

Leon Smith carnival cruise director

Leon “Mr. Electricity” Smith: 20 years and counting! Leon isn’t just a cruise director; he’s Carnival’s in-house energy drink. With a personality that could rival a bolt of lightning, he’s the human defibrillator ensuring no one’s fun levels flatline. Got cruise blues? Leon’s the man with the tunes!

Alex Siegler cruise director

Alex “The People’s Champ” Siegler : Roll out the red carpet because the ‘Favorite Cruise Director’ – as per several publications – is here. Alex doesn’t just cruise; he builds bridges (not literally) with every passenger, ensuring that every interaction is more memorable than the last. Connecting with him is like finding Wi-Fi in the middle of the ocean – rare and delightful!

Carnival Cruise director Dustin Gabriel

Dustin “Mr. Party Starter” Gabriel: If enthusiasm were contagious, Dustin would be patient zero. Serving on a myriad of Carnival ships, he’s the flame that sets the party on fire and ensures it blazes all night. When Dustin’s onboard, even the ship’s anchor wishes it could dance!

Lee Mason

Lee “Jester from Manchester” Mason: Now, here’s a fellow who can probably make a fish laugh underwater. Lee’s blend of humor ensures that there’s never a dull moment onboard. If keeping passengers entertained were an Olympic sport, Lee would be leaving with a trunk full of gold medals. Our director never misses to shoot a vlog or a chance to entertain.

Jake Miller - The Cruise Maestro

Jake “The Cruise Maestro” Miller: Jake’s not just a name; it’s a brand in the Carnival universe. With accolades like ‘Favorite Cruise Director’ by several journals, Jake is the pied piper of fun, turning every cruise event into an electrifying concert. With Jake, every day is Mardi Gras!

So, the next time you’re on board, look out for these icons. They don’t just set the course; they are the course to unparalleled fun!

Does the carnival cruise director schedule change?

Certainly, various factors can lead to changes in the cruise director’s schedule at Carnival Cruise Line. These may include unforeseen circumstances, internal reshuffling, or personal commitments. While the cruise line aims for consistency in guest experience, adjustments are sometimes necessary. However, passengers are kept informed, and a roster of skilled directors is always ready to step in.

How long is a cruise directors contract?

Cruise Directors on Carnival typically sign contracts lasting 4 to 6 months, although this can vary based on experience and ship itinerary. Once a contract ends, they usually take a break on land to recharge. The duration and cyclical nature of their work ensure they remain energetic and fresh for each stint.

Carnival Fleet Overview

I’m excited to learn more about the Carnival fleet and which ships have which cruise directors on the 2023 schedule!

Carnival operates a fleet of 24 ships, each with its own unique style and personality. From the Mardi Gras and Carnival Miracle to the Carnival Radiance and Carnival Valor, there’s a ship to suit every traveler’s needs.

Some of the top Carnival cruise destinations include the Caribbean, Mexico, and the Bahamas, with ports of call in popular destinations like Cozumel, Nassau, and Grand Cayman. With so many ships and destinations to choose from, guests are sure to find the perfect itinerary for their dream vacation.

And with the cruise directors bringing their engaging personalities and talents to each ship, guests are in for an unforgettable experience.

Cruise Director Role

Managing the entertainment team and closely collaborating with the hotel director and entertainers, my role as a cruise director is crucial to ensuring every guest has an unforgettable experience onboard.

As a cruise director, I’m responsible for hosting various events like trivia contests, gameshows, and deck parties. However, my role is not limited to just hosting events. I also act as a liaison between the guests and the ship’s crew, ensuring that all their needs and concerns are addressed promptly.

Cruise director job satisfaction is high as it’s an exciting and rewarding job where I get to travel the world and meet new people every day. However, it’s not without its challenges. One of the most significant challenges faced by cruise directors is managing the entertainment team and ensuring that they deliver high-quality performances consistently.

Additionally, it can be challenging to deal with unforeseen circumstances such as adverse weather conditions or unexpected changes to the itinerary. Despite these challenges, being a cruise director is a fulfilling job, and I take pride in ensuring that every guest has a memorable experience onboard.

Cruise Director Salary and Benefits

Receiving free travel, food, and accommodation, as well as other benefits, is one of the perks of being a cruise director at Carnival Cruise Lines.

As for my salary, it’s around $60,000 per year. Of course, the salary varies depending on the level of experience and the size of the ship one is working on. But even with the lower end of the salary range, the benefits that come with the job are already a great deal.

However, being a cruise director is not just about the salary and the benefits. It’s a job that requires hard work, dedication, and passion for entertaining people. It’s a job that demands one to have excellent communication skills, creativity, and the ability to work well under pressure.

So, is it worth the job? If you love traveling, meeting new people, and making a difference in someone’s vacation, then it definitely is. And if you’re interested in becoming a Carnival Cruise Director, my tip is to gain experience in the entertainment industry, build a strong network, and showcase your skills and personality in your application.

Cruise Director Personality Traits

Being a successful cruise director requires having a personality that shines as bright as the sun. It’s not just about hosting events and making announcements, but also about creating a memorable experience for every guest.

Here are some personality traits and job requirements that make a great cruise director:

  • Engaging: A cruise director needs to be able to connect with people from all walks of life and keep them entertained throughout their trip.
  • Energetic: The job often requires long hours and the ability to keep up with a busy schedule of events and activities.
  • Talented: Cruise directors may need to have skills in areas such as singing, dancing, or comedy to add an extra level of entertainment to their events.
  • Charismatic: A great cruise director has the ability to make guests feel special and create a sense of community on board the ship.

In addition to these traits, a successful cruise director must also be able to work closely with the rest of the ship’s staff, including the entertainment team and hotel director. They must be able to manage their time effectively and handle unexpected situations with grace and professionalism.

With the right combination of skills and personality traits, a cruise director can create a truly unforgettable experience for every guest.

To do this, I organize and host various events like trivia contests, gameshows, and deck parties that cater to different age groups and interests. Cruise Director Schedule Question

Long time reader, first time poster. Were sailing on Mardi Gras from Port Canaveral on July 1st. We were looking at the CD schedule (posted below) and it looks like there's some overlap. Will Kendall be our CD? I've heard she's so good!

I would think so. That will start the transition to the new CD who is taking over.

Thanks

That's what I was thinking too but then I saw TJ coming on as well before her sign off date then leaving 2 weeks later. Three Carnival CDs at once? Sounds like a lot of fun but I'm not sure I get it  😅

It will be Kendall. That’s turnover and it’s Jacky’s first time on Mardi Gras so it’s an extensive turnover.

Training. Cookie and Kendall trained on MG at the same time last year. Cookie gets his shot this fall. I would expect TJ to be in the mix next year when Kendall and someone else likely move to Jubilee.

Wow, thank you all for the insight!!

Kendall is fun. She's the most enjoyable CD I've ever sailed with.

I’m hoping Cookie gets moved to Jubilee. I know he likes sailing out of TX since he is from there and so do I since I love Galveston.

We had Kyndall on our Mardi Gras cruise last November and she was amazing. Full of energy, very visible throughout the ship, a great CD. It's only when you've had a really great CD that you appreciate that they do add something to your cruise.

Our favorite so far has been Louis on the Magic. We sailed out of Galveston a few months ago and had the most incredible time. Louis made the entire trip memorable and his energy with the Fun Squad was magnetic. All that said, I've only heard incredible things about Kyndall so I'm beyond thrilled that we'll get to have her as our CD!

Where can I find the Carnival CD schedule?

A little known search engine called Google on Al Gore's amazing internet would reveal this...

Thanks for the link, I was searching Carnival's website and couldn't find anything.

Oh well, looks like the schedule doesn't even list a CD for our cruise. We're on the Breeze in November. Alex Sielger is listed as On 8/24/23 and Off 11/2/23 but then nobody is listed as On again until Lawrence West comes back on 1/11/24.

I do not see the Donkey on any of these

Is he still part of the Carnival Cruise Director Team?

I think he was promoted to something like "Fleet Cruise Director" or something like that. Basically he has an office job at HQ in Miami now doing whatever it is that a "Fleet Cruise Director" does.

Edit to add: here is an article from March about his promotion.

He was a great Cruise Director on Horizon when cruising resumed I guess in 2021?

How current is this schedule? There was a recent one that listed Joey Boyes on both Horizon and Vista around Christmas time. Someone in the cruise group for our Horizon sailing asked John Heald about it and he said it was an error and Joey would be on Vista at that time. Looking at this air table, it only shows him on Horizon from November-January. I would love for this to be correct and Joey be on our sailing.

Just got off the Radiance today and our cruise director was Ranier.  I did not hear his name anywhere on Cruise Critic.  My husband thought he did a great job.  Anyone else ever cruise with him?

I am on the Venezia right now with Joey as our CD. He told us he was going to Horizon at the end of October.

That is great news!!!! Joey took Matt Michum's place on Vista for the week during our first cruise in 2019. We still think he is the best cruise director and have been hoping he would be our cd on another cruise.

Interesting.  We will have a first day on the Venezia CD in october.

I was on the Panorama last year when he was on the Fun Squad. He was the Bingo host. So happy he has gotten promoted!

Norfolk cruise center getting multiple upgrades ahead of year-round traffic

N ORFOLK — City Council voted Tuesday to approve enhancements to the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center in anticipation of becoming a year-round cruise destination in 2025.

The changes are huge, said Stephen Kirkland, who runs the cruise terminal as the executive director of Nauticus.

“A cruise ship will be here every single week, embarking and debarking passengers, and we need to be prepared for that heightened activity,” Kirkland said.

Starting Feb. 15, Carnival Sunshine will begin its weekly cruises leaving from Norfolk. The 12-deck ship is 893 feet long and can carry over 3,000 passengers — leading to a turnover of more than 6,000 people when the ship is at full capacity, setting sail and returning in a single day.

Modifications to the terminal include expanding the walkway from Waterside Drive , adding a circular drop-off lane, a revised bus lane and canopies for passengers — changes that will enhance pedestrian and vehicle circulation downtown. The city earmarked $12 million for the project.

The most advantageous change, according to Kirkland, is a sloped walkway from the first to second floor that will allow guests exiting the ship to move quickly downstairs to go through customs, collect their luggage and make their way to the ground transportation loop.

“The quicker and more efficient we can be with that process, the better the whole day is,” Kirkland said. “That allows us to embark sooner which allows that ship to set sail on time.”

Currently, there’s one elevator, one escalator and a set of stairs connecting the first and second floor.

Construction on the enhancements is due to begin in June, but additional cruise traffic from ships diverted by the Francis Scott Key bridge collapse in Baltimore has added complications: the terminal was supposed to be closed for 14 months at the conclusion of the 2023 season.

Those ships originally bound for Baltimore will not delay the construction schedule, Kirkland said. Half Moone cruise terminal had a “window” during which it was able to support Royal Caribbean and Carnival with diverted ships, but those ships will not continue to arrive after construction begins in June.

With Norfolk set to become a year-round home port for the world’s largest cruise line, passengers are anticipated to travel from across the country to catch their ship. That brings economic impact in the form of more flights to Norfolk, hotel stays the night before and after the voyage, restaurants, transportation and more.

“That’s a big deal for us as a community. It’s a game changer,” Kirkland said.
