Avoid these Outfits!

Heavy winter coats.

Leave heavy winter coats at home. Christmas cruises typically take place in warm destinations, making bulky winter coats unnecessary. Opt for lighter outerwear that is more suitable for the climate.

Bulky Boots

Snow boots and other bulky footwear are unnecessary for warm-weather cruises. They can take up valuable luggage space and are unlikely to be used in tropical or temperate climates.

Overly Revealing Clothing

While cruise attire can be casual, it is advisable to avoid overly revealing clothing. Dress modestly in dining areas and public spaces to ensure you feel comfortable and adhere to onboard dress codes.

Ripped or Torn Clothing

Keep your clothing in good condition by avoiding torn or overly distressed items. Cruise environments often require neat and presentable attire, so maintaining the condition of your clothing is essential.

Inappropriate Swimwear

Be mindful of the swimwear you choose. While swimwear is appropriate for pool and beach areas, ensure it is tasteful and in line with the cruise environment. Avoid overly revealing or offensive swimwear to respect onboard dress codes and fellow passengers.

A Fashionable Winter Cruise Wardrobe for the Stylish Traveler

A Stylish Traveler's Wardrobe for a Winter Cruise By CruiseBooking.com A Fashionable Winter Cruise Wardrobe for a Stylish Traveler

Book A Cruise Now

Winter cruises are only for some; you might wonder where they will go. If you are a traveler enjoying a cold cruise destination in the winter, we have some packing pointers for you.  You can fully enjoy your winter cruise by knowing what to wear.

A Stylish Traveler's Guide to a Winter Cruise Wardrobe

Having everything you need for your cruise always doesn’t have to be challenging with cruise packing tips from Cruisebooking.com .

Cruises in the winter

Many types of winter cold weather destinations are cruises available in the winter, so you might be wondering what to look for. On winter cruises , everyone can find something to enjoy. European Christmas Market river cruises may be perfect for culture, dining, history, and shopping.

Those looking for an adventure can cruise along Iceland's circumnavigation; Chilean Fjords and Southern Patagonia; Antarctic Peninsula; Greenland and Baffin Bay; and Alaska Inside Passage. A cruise along the Arctic Circle/Northern Lights is an excellent photographer opportunity.

There is something particularly appealing about Lights Cruise. Bundling up in spring is well worth it when you're on a Belgium and Netherlands Tulip Time cruise.

Taking A Winter Cruise: What To Wear

Winter cruise packing involves comfort, warmth, and staying dry. The following tips will help you pack for your winter cruise so you can enjoy it to the fullest.

  • Winter cruises require layers to stay warm. Wearing layers of clothing allows you to adjust your temperature as needed. The perfect layering piece is a turtleneck, sweater, or flannel shirt.
  • Wearing wool scarves, hats (balaclava), gloves, and mittens is the best way to keep warm on a winter cruise. Maintaining a warm and dry foot temperature affects your body's core temperature. Merino wool and synthetic fiber socks that wick moisture are an excellent choice.
  • An important part of your winter wardrobe is your outerwear. Water-repellent coats allowing free movement are essential if you cruises to Arctic or Antarctica. Some excursion areas can be challenging to reach when wearing restrictive clothing. If you are taking a cruise, check if the cruise line provides outerwear for its guests.
  • Thermal underwear (tops and bottoms) is a must for winter cruises. Keep your legs warm by wearing thermal underwear under heavy pants. In the event of snow activities, you should bring insulated ski pants.
  • Boots - To keep feet dry and warm, waterproof boots are essential. Your boots should be able to withstand temperatures as low as -40C depending on the cruise you choose.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, and moisturizer are essential for protecting your eyes in cold climates and warmer temperatures. A frigid environment can also cause burns and dryness on the skin and lips.
  • These wonderfully warm and comfortable packets will keep you warm on the coldest days. You can keep your hands, feet, and body warm by using small packets (follow the manufacturer's instructions). Warmth can be generated instantly by slipping them into boots, mittens, or under layers of clothing.

Winter Cruise Clothing According to Day

Whenever we think of cruises, we think of beaches drenched in sunlight and nights filled with warmth and humidity. In winter, most cruise lines move their ships to locations sheltered from snow and ice, such as Florida and Southern California. It should be noted, however, that winter cruise weather can be unpredictable. Weather changes can be unexpected, whether cold, rainy, or sudden drops in temperature. When cruising during the winter, dressing in layers is essential.

Traveling during the Day

Most winter cruise destinations have mild daytime temperatures. It is generally preferred to wear jeans or heavy pants over shorts, instead of wearing one bulky item, layer thin shirts. The ideal clothing pieces are those made of high-tech fabrics such as Polartec and Gore-Tex, but any fabric will do. Rain gear or a waterproof jacket should be always carried.

Activities for Evenings

Cruisers' generally accepted dress code during dinner is "resort chic." This means khaki pants and sun dresses in warm weather, but these clothes may need to be more adequate during a winter cruise . Lightweight sweaters or heavy fabrics are appropriate for the weather. Comfortable layering ensures you can move from the warm indoors to the cooler outdoors.

Evenings of Formality

It is common for cruises to feature two formal nights throughout seven nights. Most cruisers wear sports jackets and ties instead of tuxedos and ball gowns. Prepare for cold weather on a formal night by packing a dressy coat and tights. The ship's website can provide more information about dressing to the hilt without packing a tux. Most cruise lines offer formal wear rentals for a reasonable fee.

In a swimsuit, most passengers spend warm-weather cruise days at sea. Swimming may not be possible during a winter cruise. Many ships serve hot chocolate and blankets on their open decks. Swimmers should pack a thick beach towel, as shipboard pool towels are often thin. Cold weather may cause interior spaces to overheat, so dress in layers if you plan on spending time indoors and outdoors.

Sailing Holidays

There is an abundance of decorations and special events on board cruise ships during holiday sailings. Dressing festively is a favorite pastime for many travelers, but unpredictable weather can make packing difficult. Choose two-holiday outfits - one for warm weather and another for cold weather. Mixing and matching items can reduce the amount of packing required.

To bring on your cruise.

Explore the world in style with these five perfect cruise outfits that'll keep you comfortable as you go from pool deck to onshore excursion and back again. Put together a capsule wardrobe made up of a few versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched for any adventure.

The quintessential cruise style consists of chic but relaxed pieces. Think breezy fabrics, loose silhouettes, light neutrals, bright colors and beachy accessories.

Lean into tropical prints, red and coral hues that pop against aquamarine waters, woven hats and classic sunglasses.

Getting There

Get packed and ready to set sail on the Ultimate World Cruise.

T hough it's tempting to pack everything, cruise outfits are meant to be laid-back, so plan to wear a few items of clothing more than once — no one will judge you, promise. Pack a few key staple pieces that can be paired together in several different mix and match styles — this is called a capsule wardrobe. To ensure you can put together a great outfit each day, pack mindfully in one color palette or scheme — colors like red, coral and yellow will pop in pictures when photographed in front of a turquoise sea. If you're wondering what to pack for a five-day cruise, bring along six shirts, six sets of underwear, and three to four bottoms. Then, throw in at least two swimsuits, so you always have one dry. Finally, pajamas, a jacket or sweater, athleisure wear, a hat, sunglasses, sandals, athletic shoes, and dress shoes round out a perfect cruise outfit packing list.

Breezy fabrics like cotton and linen in a loose silhouette keep you cool and covered under the sun during the daytime, and with a few adaptable accessories, you can transition seamlessly into a polished evening look. No matter if you're spending your day sipping an ice-cold cocktail on deck, strolling along a sandy beach, adventuring on jungle trails or searching for local treats, these five versatile day-to-night cruise outfit ideas will make packing easy, getting you on island time, in no time.

1. Port-Day Wardrobe

If you'll be spending your port days shopping, dining, and exploring new cities and towns, you'll need cruise outfit ideas that are both stylish and practical. A flowy top or polo shirt, bright-colored capris or khaki shorts, comfortable shoes, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat will keep you cool during the day. When the sun goes down, dress it up with a button-down shirt, shawl or cardigan.

2. Onboard Ensemble

For days spent at sea, you'll want cruise attire that's comfortable and convertible. A swimsuit underneath a sundress or flowy shirt and shorts is an outfit that will take you from the pool to the spa to the mini golf course and beyond. When it's time for dinner, swap your shorts for trousers and slip on dressy sandals or closed-toe shoes. If you're cruising with your kids, be prepared for spills and stains with an extra shirt.

Solid-colored board shorts paired with a button-up shirt (nautical print encouraged) work just as well for a day on deck. Then, change from swim trunks and flip-flops to chinos and dress shoes before heading to the onboard restaurant. A Panama hat adds an element of holiday luxe no matter the time of day.

3. Adventure Attire

The best outfits for a cruise are the ones you can wear all day long. If you have a list of adventure activities planned for your shore excursions, or if you'll be braving the ship's RipCord® by iFly® skydive simulator and Zip Line, pack accordingly. During the day, wear athletic shorts, a neutral-colored tank top, and sneakers or sandals. Don't forget a hat, sunglasses and a long-sleeved sun shirt in your day bag. Need to dress up for dinner? It's simple. Pack extra clothes in a tote bag in case you don't have time to go back to your stateroom. Swap your athletic shorts for a flowy skirt or trousers, and trade your sneakers for a more formal pair of shoes, like chunky heels or loafers for a put-together look.

4. Beach-Day Outfit

For many, a cruise vacation is all about spending as much time as possible in or near the sea. Maybe this means claiming a lounge chair as your own, seeking a spot in the sand without footprints or swimming out into the clear blue water. When you're done wading in the water or soaking up the sun, a cover-up like a romper, oversized shirt or dress is always a stylish choice for wandering local shops and grabbing a seaside lunch. Quick-drying swim trunks are the go-to staple for this cruise outfit and is a perfect choice for kids. Just throw on a collared shirt and slip-on penny loafers, and you're good to go.

For dinner reservations, add an air of tropical elegance with a pair of wide-legged linen trousers or chinos in a solid color, paired with a linen top in a colorful print and some timeless accessories like a gauzy scarf, dangling necklace, a sleek watch or large sunglasses.

Make sure your cruise packing list includes a lightweight bag for your book, sun protection, wallet, camera, phone and a foldable dry bag tucked inside. When you're done swimming, you can stow your swimwear away in the dry bag without getting the rest of your items wet.

5. Sightseeing Cruise Outfit

When trying to figure out what to wear on a cruise, it's important to plan ahead and know what your must-dos are for your cruise vacation. For long days jam-packed with historical and natural sights to see, pack fabrics that are breathable and comfortable. Linen pants and a good pair of socks and boots are invaluable for rainforest hikes, while a lightweight long-sleeve shirt and a sunhat with a drawstring will keep you covered when visiting ancient ruins. If you're packing outfits for a cruise destination in a warm climate, bring something that can be worn over a swimsuit, so you're always ready to take a dip in hidden cenotes.

When it's time to hit the town at night, add some accessories to soften this look like dainty jewelry, colorful slip-on shoes, a Panama hat and a handbag.

I did not see pajamas mentioned. I like to travel with pj’s that look more like lounging outfits in case I venture on our balcony or need to evacuate the room quickly or someone comes to the door.

Alex

Hi Carol, many TFG readers wonder why I never include pajamas in the packing lists. The answer is that they are not part of the essential capsule wardrobe items. I count them as extra pieces of clothing. Ideally, the pieces you choose could also be worn for other activities — not just sleeping.

So love how you make your pjs multi purpose!

Barbara Ryan

I have been looking for a new bag to pack my toiletries. I think this one would work. The Bagsmart Hanging Toiletry Bag for my trip in December. Thank you!

I am going on my first cruise and am excited to try some of these! I did find that the travel toiletry bag doesn’t fold up nicely if it’s too full.

I’m a repeat cruiser but it always helps to check out what other’s are packing.

Keni

We just booked our first long post-covid trip….a 10 Day cruise to the Caribbean. We’ve been there many times but it’s a bit overwhelming to get back into the “travel mode”. Thank you for all the wonderful information you provide for all of us!!!

Bernadette Olejko-Gadaleta

Never bothered to rent a tux for my S.O. when we first started cruising, Our first cruise we got a tux on ebay for 50$, in the past few years got a new one for 100$ for our sons wedding on ebay. Was reused on cruises…Tux rental is super expensive on board. These days there’s a huge trend away from super formal nights..so a tux is no loner expected.

Erin

We wear a tux always on formal night. The only “trend away” is people basically don’t make the effort. The staff actually very much appreciates and acknowledges the effort to wear one

Marian

Love these great ideas. Hope to travel here soon! I

What to wear on a cruise: daytime, formal nights & more.

Experts share their top recommendations for versatile cruise clothing.

What to Wear on a Cruise

Know what types of clothing, shoes and accessories are best to wear on a cruise.

When it comes to cruising in style, packing the right attire for every occasion is essential. Including a few key versatile items on your cruise packing list will prevent your suitcase (and the limited closet space in your stateroom) from becoming overcrowded – and keep you looking appropriate for all events.

Although most cruise lines outline their suggested dress codes in the FAQ sections of their websites, be sure to also review the specifics of your cruise itinerary. Not only will the destination and weather factor into what you should wear on your cruise, but you'll also want to know if formal nights require black-tie attire, themed dress parties need costumes or shore excursions necessitate unique clothing or footwear.

Whether you'll be lounging by the pool or attending a glamorous dinner, our list of must-have items and suggestions from industry experts will help you navigate dressing for your next cruise vacation.

christmas cruise dress

For relaxing sea days, prioritize comfort above all else. Depending on your planned activities, any of the following casual options are considered acceptable attire:

  • Skirts or skorts
  • T-shirts and tank tops
  • Breezy lounge pants
  • Bathing suits
  • Cover-ups
  • Sun hats or baseball caps

Travel writer Jill Schildhouse always packs her VOTEPRETTY sundress . "This is my go-to cruise workhorse," says Schildhouse. "It's light and breezy, and the pockets come in very handy." She adds that the sundress can be worn to casual dinners on the ship or on shore excursions, and it can even double as a swimsuit cover-up. "I've taken it all over the world and it always arrives wrinkle-free," she says. Schildhouse has received many compliments on this classic sundress, which is available in multiple colors.

Sheri Griffiths, host of YouTube series CruiseTipsTV , suggests wearing comfortable, broken-in shoes on a cruise. She recommends avoiding brand-new footwear during your voyage to prevent blisters and daily discomfort. A basic sneaker can be worn for just about any cruise itinerary, from Alaska to the Caribbean . Griffiths says, "We love these Adidas Stan Smiths because they wear in quickly and have a timeless style."

In the evening, most cruise ships adopt a dress code in their main dining rooms and specialty restaurants that incorporate smart-casual or resort-wear attire. The following clothing choices will suffice:

  • Maxi dresses
  • Elegant tops
  • Long- or short-sleeved button-down shirts
  • Polo shirts
  • Blazers and ties (typically optional, unless otherwise stated)
  • Shawls or wraps
  • Closed-toe dress shoes
  • Sandals or heels

Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief at Cruise Critic, shares her best advice for cruise footwear. "I always pack my Rothy's shoes for any cruise because they're infinitely comfortable, work as both a formal and [an] informal shoe and can be tossed in the laundry if they get dirty." She notes that she has several pairs, but two of her go-to styles are The Point and The Ballet Flat . McDaniel adds that the shoes work in every occasion, from strolling along the ship decks to perusing cobblestone streets on shore. "I bought both [pairs] 5 years ago, and they look as new today as they did out of the box despite literally hundreds of hours of wear," she says.

Jason Leppert, founder of YouTube channel Popular Cruising , always packs his signature Hawaiian shirts to wear day or night. He says, "I love the RSVLTS collection because they can play casually with shorts or more dressy with slacks for dinner."

Formal Nights

christmas cruise dress

While more casual these days, cruise formal nights still call for a bit more sophistication and style. Appropriate options include:

  • Cocktail dresses
  • Evening gowns
  • Dress shoes

Ashley Kosciolek, senior cruise writer for The Points Guy, always packs a gown or a fancy cocktail dress for a formal night. "I work from home and don't have a reason to dress up otherwise, so I look forward to it." Still, Kosciolek is a firm believer that travelers should wear what is most comfortable for them while on vacation. She adds, "My dinner won't taste any better or worse based on what others are wearing."

Mikkel Woodruff, editor of cruise site Sometimes Sailing , always brings her Omega Sailing Bracelet on cruises. She says, "I like to bring jewelry that reminds me of the ocean and being on the sea." Woodruff appreciates the bracelet's versatility, noting how easily it can go from shore excursions to formal evenings to everyday activities.

Shore Excursions

christmas cruise dress

When heading off the ship for a shore excursion, opt for comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear to make the most of your adventures on land. Consider packing the following items:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Mesh water shoes
  • T-shirts or tank tops
  • A waterproof jacket

Freelance travel writer David Swanson shares his favorite versatile cruise shoes. He discovered a comfortable pair of Danner multitasking shoes that worked for dinners, casual events and multiple days of cycling on a recent European cruise. "I didn't think I'd find something to do dual duty, but I love this comfy pair from Danner, an outdoor brand [that is] new to me but has been around since 1932," says Swanson.

Paul Thornton, host of The Joy of Cruising Podcast , always packs his Coofandy linen shirts and shorts for hot Caribbean days and breezy cruise ship evenings. "I love Coofandy because they enable this senior to look 'youthful' on the beach and excursions," says Thornton. He adds that the brand is also his go-to retailer for White Party-themed nights on board.

Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

Cruise Line Dress Codes

Dress codes can vary significantly from one cruise company to the next, so it's a good idea to check with your specific line before filling up your suitcase. Once you're on board, be sure to read the daily program for reminders about the dress codes required at the events and dining venues during your voyage.

Azamara Dress Code

  • Daytime: Fairly casual attire is suitable throughout Azamara 's ships during the day. However, baseball caps, distressed denim, tank tops and bathing suits cannot be worn at Discoveries, Aqualina and Prime C restaurants (and shoes are required).
  • Evening: At night, women typically wear casual dresses, skirts, pants, capris, blouses and knit tops, while men are welcome to wear collared golf and polo shirts, shorts and pants. Sport coats are optional. Note: There are no official formal nights on Azamara's voyages.
  • Themed Nights: Be sure to pack an all-white outfit for Azamara's signature White Night dinner and deck party.

Carnival Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Pack casual, comfortable attire to sail with Carnival Cruise Line , such as T-shirts, polo shirts or relaxed tops paired with shorts, capris, khakis or jeans. Athletic wear paired with a lightweight sweater or jacket are suitable for those looking to stay active.
  • "Cruise casual" attire for men typically suggests longer dress shorts, pants or jeans and a collared polo shirt. Women usually wear sundresses, blouses, skirts, dress shorts and capri pants.
  • "Cruise elegant" typically translates to dress slacks, dress shirts and sports coats (suggested) for men, with some wearing suits, ties or tuxedos. Women choose dresses (party or cocktail), pantsuits and elegant skirts with blouses, while some may wear evening gowns. Kids should follow the adult dress code, opting for school dance- or party-appropriate attire. Note: Jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, shorts, T-shirts, sportswear, exercise clothes, baseball hats, flip-flops and bathing suits are not permitted. The number of "cruise elegant" evenings varies based on the length of the cruise.
  • Carnival Journeys cruises feature a "Throwback Sea Day," where guests can relive the '80s by day (outfits included) and dress up for a themed Captain's Cocktail Party by night.
  • Cruises between early December and Christmas Day feature an "Ugly Sweater Contest."
  • Costumes are suggested for Halloween cruises between the end of September and October. However, when choosing a costume, keep in mind that full masks are prohibited (masks covering half of the face are allowed).

Celebrity Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: During the day, smart casual resort wear is suitable throughout Celebrity Cruises ' ships. (Think: sundresses, shorts, polos and button-down shirts paired with sandals, low heels and loafers.) 10 Things to Pack for a Christmas or Holiday Cruise

christmas cruise dress

Are you going on a Hanukkah or Christmas cruise ? Chances are that you're worried about leaving behind your favorite holiday-themed decorations, gifts and more. Don't fret. You can bring along your own holiday spirit to sea if you simply devote some luggage space to festive gear.

Figuring out what to pack for a Christmas or Hanukkah cruise can take some creativity. With that in mind, read on for our top 10 tips for brightening up your holiday cruise experience, from your cabin to attire and gifts.

Holiday Cruise Cabin Decorations: Christmas Trees, Menorahs and More

christmas cruise dress

1. Festive Knick Knacks, Trinkets and Ornaments

When you cruise on holidays, vibrant decorations are anything but sparse. Cruise lines will decorate public areas with garlands, gingerbread houses, menorahs and many other traditional items. But, it's up to you to decorate your cabin for your favorite holiday.

You'll have to get creative while simultaneously adhering to your ship's rules . For example, most lines do not allow string lights , and Carnival in particular has a strict list of requirements (including that decorations must be flame-retardant and nothing should be hung on light fixtures).

Bring along small, preferably plastic knick knacks from home that you cherish, such as snowmen, menorahs or gift boxes. Just be sure to bring along some double-sided tape to best affix the more delicate pieces to your furniture, which will keep them safe from damage during sudden ship movements.

If you would really like to have something similar to string lights, you can craft your own garland out of paper and place them on your walls via magnetic hooks , since the walls and doors are made of steel. They may not illuminate your cabin like real lights would, but they'll certainly add a unique and festive flair to it.

2. A Small, Yet Quaint, Christmas Tree

christmas cruise dress

Most ships will have an impressive Christmas tree on display, usually in the atrium. That doesn't mean you can't bring a Charlie Brown-sized synthetic version for your stateroom . Just remember that both the tree and its decorations need to comply with cruise ship rules (as we said, no string lights).

3. A Battery-Operated Menorah

Candles are big no-nos on cruise ships, which can make decorating your room for Hanukkah a little trickier, but certainly not impossible. Consider packing a small, battery-operated menorah to brighten up your cabin.

There are some elegant non-candle menorahs, plus most have the option to turn on each "flame" in order, so you can light one more candle each night as you sing the blessings. However, you should check with your specific cruise line and ship because some will provide an electric menorah to guests upon request.

Most cruise lines will have community candle-lighting ceremonies (often with latkes) each night of the holiday, but those menorahs are usually flameless, as well.

4. Festive Stockings for the Whole Family

christmas cruise dress

Don't forget to pack Christmas stockings to both liven up your cabin and stuff with small gifts on Christmas morning. As mentioned earlier, you should always use strong magnetic hooks to hang them as many cruise lines are picky about adhesives on their walls.

Since you're not going to want to pack and bring home lots of gifts, we recommend looking for mini-sized stockings since they're great for travel.

Holiday Cruise Attire: Ugly Sweaters, Santa Hats and More

christmas cruise dress

5. Ugly Christmas Sweaters

You might not want to put on a fuzzy sweater for your Caribbean beach outing, but dinner on an air-conditioned cruise ship is a great time to show off your wildest Christmas sweater or holiday-themed dress.

We highly recommend you attempt to convince your entire group to go all-out and match or at least stick to the ugly-sweater theme. Then, ask the cruise ship's photographer to take some fun photos for a holiday cruise to remember.

6. Merrymaking Santa Hats and Holiday Headbands

christmas cruise dress

If you want to show your holiday spirit on land in a tropical destination , trade in your classic ugly sweater for a much cooler headpiece. Santa hats and Hanukkah-themed headbands look good with shorts or a bathing suit -- and they look exceptional in photo opps, too.

7. Hanukkah or Christmas-Themed Socks

If you'd rather be slightly more subtle with your attire yet still perfectly festive, slip on some fun socks. Wear Christmas or Hanukkah socks to liven up your evening attire or pair with sneakers as you explore the ship.

There is a wide variety of sock patterns and colors for Christmas and Hanukkah to choose from, such as reindeer, penguins, Santas, menorahs, Stars of David and dreidels. You could always opt for the classic yet flashy color schemes, like red and green or blue and white.

8. Classic Matching Pajamas

Matching pajamas for the whole family is a classic favorite holiday tradition. If you're sailing somewhere warm, opt for lightweight sets instead of flannel for increasing your comfort without sacrificing your holiday style.

If possible, bring along these matching pajama sets. Have the whole family put them on and grab some quality keepsake photos with the ship's photographer. Some mugs of hot chocolate from the buffet would up the seasonal vibes, too.

Holiday Cruise Gifts: Holiday Cards and Chocolates

christmas cruise dress

9. Thoughtful Holiday Cards for Fellow Cruisers

Don't keep the seasonal cheer to yourself. Share it with others on your trip! Bring a set of holiday greeting cards with you to write notes to new friends that you make onboard, your Cruise Critic Meet and Mingle group and your favorite crew.

christmas cruise dress

When bringing holiday greeting cards, we recommend using blank options so you can add personalized messages and specific holiday wishes to each receiver.

10. Delicious Christmas Chocolate and Hanukkah Gelt

Brighten up your diligent cabin steward 's day or express appreciation for newly made friends with holiday chocolates . They're easy to transport, loved by most and won't break the bank.

Go for traditional bags of Hanukkah gelt or a box of indulgent chocolate truffles. Chocolates also make excellent stocking stuffers. Just make sure not to leave them anywhere they could melt.

Understanding Cruise Formal Night Dress Codes

The tradition of dressing up for dinner isn’t new, yet every cruise line has its own spin on what’s considered apropos attire for formal nights.

While the essence of elegance remains constant, the definitions of formalwear have seen a high tide of changes over the years.

Let’s delve into the typical dress codes and how different cruise lines interpret them.

Explanation of Typical Dress Codes

  • This is the epitome of formal attire. Men are expected to don tuxedos while women can opt for full-length evening gowns.
  • Black Tie events often herald a night of fine dining and sophisticated soirees.
  • A notch below black tie, yet still drenched in elegance. Men might wear dark suits and ties, while women have the choice between cocktail dresses, elegant separates, or full-length gowns.
  • Here’s where things get slightly relaxed. Men can opt for dress shirts and slacks, possibly with a jacket, while women can explore shorter dresses, stylish tops with skirts or trousers.

  • They recommend suits and ties or tuxedos for men and cocktail dresses for women on their formal nights.
  • Encourages a smart casual dress code in the dining rooms, while formal nights may see men in suits and women in cocktail dresses or gowns.
  • With their “Freestyle Cruising” concept, there’s a lot more flexibility with dress codes, but they do host “Dress-Up or Not Night” where guests can choose to dress up.
  • Renowned for its tradition, Cunard hosts Black Tie nights where traditional evening wear is the norm.

Each cruise line’s interpretation of formal, semi-formal, and casual dress codes offer a glimpse into the onboard culture and what one can expect on formal nights.

Evolution of Dress Codes Over Time

The rigid dress codes of yesteryears have gradually relaxed, giving way to modern interpretations.

The transition from strictly black-tie affairs to the inclusion of semi-formal and smart casual attire reflects the changing demographics and attitudes towards formal dressing.

Selecting the perfect dress is only the start of your styling voyage for the cruise formal night.

The right cruise accessories can elevate your look, adding a splash of personality, elegance, and flair to your ensemble. Let’s chart a course through the sparkling world of accessories.

Jewelry: Choosing Pieces that Complement Your Dress

  • When selecting a necklace, consider the neckline of your dress. For instance, a delicate pendant works well with a v-neck while a statement necklace can highlight a strapless or sweetheart neckline.
  • The style of earrings can either elevate or downplay your overall look. Classic studs or drop earrings often complement formal dresses well, while bold or oversized earrings can add a modern twist.

  • Elegant flats or sandals can be a chic and comfortable choice, especially if you plan to dance the night away.
  • Choose materials and colors that complement your dress. Classic metallics, blacks, or nudes are often versatile choices.

Handbags and Clutches: Selecting the Right One to Carry Essentials

  • Select a clutch or handbag that’s big enough to carry your essentials, like your room key, phone, lipstick for touch-ups, and perhaps a compact.
  • Look for styles that complement your dress and other accessories. A sleek clutch or a vintage-inspired handbag can add a classy touch.
  • Consider options with secure closures to ensure your belongings stay safe as you move around the ship.

Accessorizing is like setting sail towards the horizon; it’s an exploration of personal style and the elements that can make your formal night look truly shine.

With the right accessories in your treasure chest, you’ll not only look stunning but feel your best as you step into the starlit elegance of cruise formal night.

Packing Tips

The anticipation builds as the day of your cruise looms on the horizon. Now comes the crucial task of packing your cherished dresses for cruise formal night and accessories to ensure they reach the high seas in impeccable condition.

This section will unravel practical cruise packing tips to safeguard your formal night ensemble from any voyage-related mishaps.

Preparing Your Dress and Accessories

  • Ensure your dress is freshly cleaned and pressed before packing. Place it in a garment bag to maintain its pristine condition.
  • Keep your accessories in a separate, secure container or pouch to prevent loss or damage. Use jewelry boxes or padded pouches to protect delicate pieces.

Strategic Packing Techniques

  • While rolling is often recommended to save space and prevent wrinkles, delicate formal wear may benefit from being folded carefully along its creases or laid flat.
  • Place sheets of tissue paper between layers of clothing or inside folded areas to prevent wrinkles.
  • Placing your dress in a dry cleaning bag before folding can help prevent wrinkles as the plastic reduces friction.
  • Utilize packing cubes to keep your formal attire separate and protected from other items in your suitcase.

packing for vacation

Carry-On vs Checked Luggage

  • If possible, pack your formal night attire and essential accessories in your carry-on to avoid the risks associated with checked luggage, such as loss or delay.

Onboard Care

  • Investigate if your cruise ship offers steaming services to rid your dress of any wrinkles incurred during transit. Alternatively, pack a portable steamer.
  • Carry a small sewing kit for any last-minute repairs. A kit should include basic items like safety pins, needle and thread, and small scissors.

Packing with care is your first step towards dazzling on the cruise’s formal night.

While the voyage to the glamorous night may be laden with the hustle and bustle of travel, with thoughtful packing, your formal attire will disembark in the same impeccable condition it was in when it left shore.

And as you unveil your carefully chosen ensemble, you’ll find the effort invested in packing well was worth every moment, setting a smooth course for a night of elegant revelry under the stars.

What To Wear On A Cruise: The Ultimate Guide

When going on a cruise, it can be difficult to know what clothes to wear for the different times of day, different climates and the cruise line’s dress code.

As someone who regularly goes on cruises, I’ve had to pack many times for different types of cruises. From my experience, I now know all the things you need to take into consideration.

Me and my friends on a cruise wearing formal dresses

In this guide, I’ll share my tips and give you all the info you need to help you decide what to pack for your next cruise.

Consider Your Destination

When packing your clothes for a cruise, the first thing I would consider is the destination. Not only will you need to think about the weather, but the inside and outside temperature when on the ship, the activities you’ll be doing and any cultural factors you may need to consider.

Temperature

It may seem obvious what to pack depending on the weather conditions. It’s no surprise the temperature varies widely from the Caribbean to the Alaskan seas. But even when going to a hot destination, there are a few other things to consider.

Me and my husband on a Norway cruise wearing jackets

Sometimes it can get a little bit cold on a cruise ship , even if you’re in the Caribbean. Firstly, the air con can make the inside of the ship feel quite cold. If you’re doing indoor activities, where you may be sat still for a long period of time, such as watching a show or enjoying a top dining experience, the air con can make you feel a bit cold.

Secondly, it can get windy out on the deck, making it feel cold. If the ship is going full steam ahead, the wind can really pick up, even if the sun is blazing.

So I recommend packing a balance of light, and warm clothing will give you the flexibility to enjoy your cruise regardless of the weather.

Cultural Considerations

Countries such as those in the Middle East can sometimes have an expectation of what should be worn. This means you may need to take into account any cultural considerations. Also, you may want to visit religious buildings, such as a mosque or temple, when doing shore excursions.

White Mosque, United Arab Emirates

It is expected that clothing should be respectful, this means you should not wear anything too revealing. Also, many of these places are hot destinations, so make sure your clothes are light and cover your arms and legs, such as a long dress or linen trousers and a top.

Consider Your Cruise Line

Each cruise line has a different dress code, so it’s important to find out what the cruise line expects before you go.  During the day, it’s usually quite relaxed, however, it may be quite different in the evening. Before you start packing, make sure you check the cruise line’s policy.

Daytime Cruise Wear

During the day on a cruise, you’ll likely be doing a range of activities, particularly if you have a day at sea. During the daytime, you’ll likely want to wear a few different outfits. In one half of the day, you may be relaxing by the pool and the other half taking part in some of the onboard activities.

Poolside and Sunbathing Outfits

If you enjoy swimming, sunbathing or relaxing by the poolside on the Lido Deck, make sure you have a few pieces of swimwear. Particularly, if they get wet, you may want a second swimsuit or bikini to put in in case the other set has not dried yet. Also, the deck can get quite hot sometimes, so make sure you bring a pair of sandals or flip-flops, so you don’t burn your feet.

Cruise Mummy on cruise

Many cruise lines will not let you in the ship’s restaurants, bars or reception if you just have swimwear on. So if you’re planning on going from the pool to a restaurant, make sure you bring something to cover up with to the poolside, like a lightweight summer dress or shirt and shorts, and appropriate footwear.

Clothing for Onboard Activities

Most ships have a gym, so if you’re a regular visitor to the gym and don’t want to miss out, make sure you bring your gym gear. When packing your clothes, plan how many workouts you’ll be doing and make sure you have enough. Some gyms won’t let you in if you don’t have the right footwear, so make sure you have a pair of trainers.

Some cruise ships have activities such as rock climbing, ziplining and Royal Caribbean’s surf simulator, the FlowRider. Each one will likely have a specification on what you need to wear. For example, you’ll need close-toed shoes for rock climbing and laser tag and secure shoes for ziplining.

Father and daughter rock climbing

For the FlowRider surf simulator board shorts and a rash top are recommended. But you can get away with a swimsuit and a t-shirt. One thing’s for sure, though… Ladies, you must wear a top! If you try to do the FlowRider in a bikini, things won’t end well for you!

christmas cruise dress

If you’re doing indoor activities, such as ice skating, you must pack something that covers your legs, such as long trousers or leggings. Cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean state that you won’t be allowed on the ice if you do not have suitable clothing. Also, it will be a bit cold in there, so if you are watching or taking part, remember to pack a few layers.

Evening Cruise Wear

In the evening you’ll likely want to wear completely different clothes. Whether it’s a casual, formal or theme night, you’ll want to be prepared when packing your luggage.

Casual Nights

Many cruise lines have casual nights, but many wonder how casual is casual? It all depends on that particular cruise line’s dress code. On most cruise lines, they would expect you to wear something such as a nice top with jeans , a polo or casual button-down shirt, or a smart dress.

Below, you can see the type of clothes that we like to wear on casual evenings…

Family on cruise wearing casual dress

Some cruise lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), are freestyle, meaning you can wear casual clothing at all times, even during formal nights.

Some cruise lines are more strict than others. For example, on a recent Fred. Olsen cruise, my husband was turned away from the main dining room on a casual night because he was wearing smart shorts. He changed into more casual jeans, and that was fine!

I find that cruise lines are generally much more strict with men. I’ve worn smart trainers and a dress in the main dining room with no issue, whereas men may be less likely to get away with it.

On the whole, as long as you look nice and your clothes aren’t ripped or have too much skin showing, you’ll generally be fine. But, it’s wise the check the dress code of your particular cruise line to avoid having to nip back to your room to change.

Formal Nights

On formal nights, cruise lines often have a smart dress code that allows passengers to wear their most glamorous clothes.

Family on cruise wearing formal dress

For example, Cunard usually has three formal evenings for a week-long cruise. Ladies may wear a cocktail dress, a ball gown or something a bit more chic. Men might wear a suit or tuxedo.

On some of Royal Caribbean ships, it’s listed a dinner dress suggestion of “Wear Your Best”, which is described as “Say goodbye to Formal Night, and hello to Wear Your Best.  Get glamorous. Be Chic. It’s time to shine – your way.” [Source] .

Check out these cruise dresses for formal night to some ideas as to what people wear.

It’s also worth noting that typically, if you don’t want to wear formal clothing, you’ll be able to relax in your casual gear but your dining options may be more limited – you’ll have to eat in the buffet, rather than the main dining room. You may also find that some bars are off-limits.

Theme Nights

Most cruise lines offer a variety of themed nights. This is the perfect time to dig out costumes from parties out the back of your wardrobe. Usually, costumes aren’t sold onboard, so coming prepared is essential. Check what theme nights are scheduled in advance and pack accordingly.

Cruise Mummy on Scarlet Lady

Each cruise line has different themed nights. For example, Royal Caribbean is known for various theme nights, such as Black and White Night, 60s, 70s, and 80s nights, and Toga Parties.

Meanwhile, Carnival offers its unique 80s Rock’n’Glow Deck Party, Silent White Hot Night, and Superhero Music Party.

NCL encourages its guests to take part in their vibrant neon “glow” party.

Virgin Voyages theme nights include Scarlet Night and a pyjama party where you can arrive in your best nightwear!

Disney Cruise Line features Pirate Nights. Many of the kids dress up as pirates for this, and some of the adults do too!

Packing for Shore Excursions

Another thing to consider when packing is shore excursions. Your clothing needs may be quite different to what you need on the ship.

Walking Shoes and Comfortable Clothing

Firstly, it’s important to pack the right shoes. Sightseeing can often involve lots of walking, so if you want to make the most out of the shore excursions, you’ll need some comfy shoes.

The best type of shoes are the ones that you are used to, which provide plenty of support. I would also recommend they are flat. If you come across any cities with uneven pavements or cobblestones, anything with a heel can be difficult to walk in, so it’s best to stick to flat shoes, like trainers or sturdy sandals. You may want to check out my guide on shoes for cruises .

Secondly, choose comfortable clothing suited for the climate. Clothes made from cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking synthetics can be the most comfortable, especially in warmer climates.

It’s also a good idea to wear layers, as there may be changing weather conditions throughout the day, or it might be cold outside, but if you’re visiting indoor places, it can get warm. Or if you’re in a hot destination, you may go into a place with freezing cold air con.

Essential Items for Day Trips

When packing for shore excursions, you also need to think about other essentials that will make your day more comfortable and enjoyable.

If you’re in a hot destination, sun protection should be on your list. You may want to purchase a good sun cream that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Bring a hat and sunglasses too, to further protect yourself from the sun. Also, to stay hydrated, I like to pack an insulated water bottle that can be topped up throughout the day.

Sometimes I also like to pack light snacks, particularly if you have kids. Dry pre-packaged snacks, like granola bars, are usually fine. However, if you’re bringing food off the ship , it’s best to check the country’s laws, as sometimes it can be illegal.

To carry all of your items, take a comfortable backpack or crossover bag. It will need to be able to fit your essentials in there, including your phone, purse or wallet and other items that you might buy on your day trip.

How Much To Pack

Another factor to consider when deciding what to wear on a cruise is how much you need to pack. You’ll need to consider your luggage allowance and whether you will use the onboard laundry service.

Luggage Allowances

Usually, cruise lines give a good luggage allowance – or none at all, letting you take as much as you can carry. This means you can take quite a few outfits with you. However, think about the size of your bags as they have to fit into your stateroom and your clothes in the wardrobe and drawers available.

Star Legend closet

Before going on a cruise, you can look at the size of your room and the storage available. Secondly, you can check the size of the luggage allowance. You could take quite a lot of clothes with you, but you definitely don’t want to bring too much and then have to return it home.

Some cruise lines like Carnival have strict restrictions on the size and weight of your bags. Read more here: Carnival Luggage Restrictions .

Also bear in mind any luggage restrictions on flights to get to your embarkation port or to return home. They’ll usually be stricter than the cruise line.

It is easier to pack light, which means you may want clothes that don’t take up too much room or items you can mix and match for different outfits throughout your time on the cruise. For more top tips on what to pack, check out these handy cruise packing tips and tricks .

Another key factor when deciding what clothes to bring on a cruise is whether you want to use the ship’s laundry service. If you’re going on a long cruise or travelling with kids, this might be ideal for you.

Laundry-room inside a cruise ship

Most cruise lines have some sort of laundry service. Some cruise lines have a full-service with dry cleaning for an item-based fee. Others offer self-service or a flat-rate ‘fill the bag’ service. For more details, check out my helpful cruise ship laundry guide .

Most cruises have a dress code for dinner, however, this is recommended and not enforced. Depending on the cruise line, this could range from casual smart to formal clothes. If the cruise is at least a week long, there are at least one or two formal nights. On other nights, ‘smart casual’ is usually the dress code.

When going on a cruise, there are certain clothes you should not wear, including offensive t-shirts, cut-off jeans, and overly revealing swimwear. Also, most cruise lines discourage beachwear, shorts, or flip-flops in dining rooms and bars.

For a seven-day cruise, consider taking about three to four daytime outfits, two to three casual evening outfits, one to two formal options and two swimwear options. Rather than take your whole wardrobe with you, have outfits that are versatile and can be mixed and matched.

For a week’s cruise, it’s best to pack two or three swimsuits. You can wash them in the shower each day and hang them to dry. So with a couple of options, you’ll always have a dry one to wear.

12 Affordable Dresses Perfect for a Cruise Formal Night

There might not be a single event on a cruise that can cause as much stress as formal night.

And all that stress comes from one simple question: What can I wear?

To be fair, it can be a tough question to answer. Over the years, formal night has decidedly become more casual. While it used to be just for formal evening gowns and tuxedos, these days almost anything except for shorts (and sometimes even those) will pass the dress code.

That said, we think you definitely should dress up for formal night. The night isn’t just about you — it’s for everyone headed to dinner in the ship’s dining room. Not everyone gets a special occasion to dress up. Being able to get dolled up and head to dinner with other glamorous-looking folks helps to set the atmosphere.

To learn more about what sort of dress is and isn’t allowed during formal night you can read our article here.

In the meantime, we’ve rounded up a dozen formal dresses — all of which would be perfect for cruise formal night. You can find all of these dresses on Amazon, which typically offers free returns/exchanges if something doesn’t fit just right.

Considerations for what to pack for Christmas Market River Cruise

River in Hamburg with Christmas tree as seen from a Christmas Markets River Cruise

Before we get onto our Christmas Market river cruise packing list, we thought that it would be worth pointing out some of the things to consider before putting your packing list together.

River Cruises are Different to Ocean Going Cruises

The first thing we want to point out is that river cruises are very different to ocean going cruises in term of shore excursions, dress codes and also the size of cabins

Therefore even if you are seasoned ocean cruisers you will find that there are different requirements for packing.

All cruise cabins, river, sea going and even world cruises are small. Therefore it is really important to pack light and not overpack . Lots of clothes and large luggage will quickly fill up your river cruise cabin. Therefore a river cruise capsule wardrobe is an essential.

For tips on how to pack a capsule wardrobe generally without having to worry about laundry service check out the below posts:

  • 54321 packing method
  • Sudoku packing method

Best Luggage for a River Cruise at Christmas

We also recommend taking the smallest luggage you can possibly get away with. For instance if you can do carry on only that is great but if not we recommend taking  soft sided luggage like this  as it is easier to store under your bed or in the wardrobe.

Overall I would say the smaller the luggage the better for a river cruise.

River Cruise Dress Codes

Whenever we talk about cruises, the most frequent questions we get are around dress codes. And river cruises are no exception.

Now obviously for a Christmas Market River cruise the most important thing to pack for is the weather. However what about when you are on board?

The good news is that the river cruise dress codes tend to be a lot less formal than ocean going cruise ship dress codes. In fact I would say on some the dress code is actually quite casual which means you can leave the evening formal wear at home.

However there are differences depending on the line you are traveling with. For this reason we have summarised the main river cruise line dress codes in their own posts:

  • Viking River Cruise Dress Code
  • Saga River Cruise Dress Code
  • Emerald Waterways Cruise Dress Code
  • Avalon Waterways

What to wear on a river cruise formal night

This is a great question and actually the answer is that most river cruises don’t tend to have a formal night like ocean cruises.

Dress codes on river cruises even in the evening tend to be casual to smart casual and not everyone will change after a river cruise shore excursion.

Personally we always prefer to change for dinner but a sparkly top, or a blouse and smarter bottoms would be perfect – we will go into more detail in the next section.

What to wear on Christmas Market river cruise shore excursions?

Strasbourg Christmas MArket in France in December

River cruise excursions tend to be more city orientated and this is very true for a Christmas Market River Cruise. As obviously the primary purpose of the excursions is to visit the Christmas Markets, usually along the Rhine.

Generally speaking for these excursions I would recommend wearing what you would do if you were on a city break in that place normally. Some common places you visit on a Christmas Market River Cruise are

  • cities in France such as Strasbourg
  • cities in Germany such as Cologne, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf. For a full German Christmas Market packing list click here.

But in essence I would say the key is comfort. There is lots of walking on river cruise excursions so having comfortable walking shoes is an absolute must. As well as having lots of light layers that you can take on and off easily as well as a thick winter jacket paired with winter accessories.

What to wear on Christmas Market River Cruise

So now you know the dress codes involved in a Christmas market river cruise it is time to turn our attention to what to wear on a Christmas market river cruise with our handy packing checklist.

couple at christmas market

A coat is absolutely an essential for a Christmas Market River cruise. For a Christmas Market cruise we would recommend packing a thick coat with some insulation that also has some waterproofing and wind resistance.

People at Christmas markets, both locals and tourists will be dressed for the weather and practically before anything else. Therefore pick the warmest coat you have instead of being led by a style. For more information on how to pack Winter Coats in suitcases check out this post

Some of our favorite brands of coats for Northern Europe include:

  • North Face  and

Click here to shop coats for Northern Europe.

Winter Accessories

Winter accessories are a must for European Christmas Markets. They are a very practical item for being outdoors in Europe strolling around the Christmas markets but on top of that they can stylishly finish off your Winter Coat outfit. Ear muffs are also advisable.

And be sure to get gloves that are touch screen compatible so as you are likely to be taking lots of photographs.

Click here to shop winter accessories

Layers are the most important thing to pack for a Christmas Market River Cruise. Now the key to a successful Winter outfit for Europe in my opinion is having multiple light layers with you rather than chunky sweaters and bulky jumpers for top layers.

Firstly these are bulky and are hard to pack, especially if you are trying to pack a  minimalist capsule wardrobe  and not  overpack .

Instead you want to have lots of lighter layers that can be combined as part of a  sudoku packing list , and that can be taken on and off as extra layers are required.

I personally never travel in Winter without a merino wool sweater. Merino wool is one of my favorite fabrics to wear in Winter for Christmas Markets. That is because it provides extra warmth as it is an insulating fabric but is also compact unlike a thick knit. This means it is easy to pack, and everyone knows Winter is hard to pack for.

Also merino wool doesn’t absorb smell as quickly as other fabrics.

We also would always pack a festive sweater / festive jumper for a CHristmas Markets River Cruise to help get you in a festive spirit.

And sparkly and glittery sweater wise as this is a nice top to wear for dinners on river cruise.

Click here to shop layers for Europe

Warmer trousers are definitely required for Christmas Markets. Jeans are a great choice as are other heavier weight pants such as cords and wool.

Note: I would personally avoid dresses for visiting Christmas Markets on a river cruise shore excursion due to the weather. However a dress such as a wrap dress or a sweater dress is perfect for on the ship.

T Shirts are a great base for Christmas Markets. We recommend packing more long-sleeve tops over short sleeve tees. And if you feel the cold you may want a thermal base layer too.

For those traveling to Europe in Winter we always recommend packing thicker, flannel pjs no matter the destination.

Underwear and Warm Socks

Goes without saying really. However I think socks are worth talking about in a bit more depth. There is nothing I hate more than having cold feet. Therefore picking the right socks is a really important part of my packing list for Christmas Markets.

I would either pack some thick hiking socks or merino wool socks to make sure your feet stay warm strolling around the stalls at the Christmas Markets.

Shop merino wool socks here.

T hermal Base Layers  / Thermal Underwear (optional)

A thermal base layer comprising of leggings and a long sleeve top don’t need to be on everyone’s packing list. It really depends on how much you feel the cold. My husband never packs them for Europe in December however I always have them.

Shop thermal base layers here.

Best Shoes for a Christmas Market River Cruise

Ankle boots.

Ankle boots are my number one pick for visiting European Christmas Market. They are easier to pack than knee high boots and if you select the right pair are waterproof and come with good soles.

To cope with the weather, we recommend picking something like a Chelsea boot or Dr Martens with a thick sole with good grip.

Click here to shop ankle boots.

For tips on how to pack boots in a suitcase check out this post.

After boots, sneakers are the next best shoe for Christmas markets. Comfortable shoes are important for Christmas Markets as you will be doing a lot walking. And I don’t think sneakers can be beaten on the comfort front.

My favorite sneaker brands for travel are   Hoka  and  AllBirds . Although I love the versatility of a white sneaker these can get discolored quickly on Christmas market river cruises.

I also love the  Ecco brand of sneakers for comping with rain.

What to pack for a Christmas Market River Cruise (non clothing)

Travel documents .

A Passport and/or identification is always required. On top of that remember also your travel insurance, vaccination certificates and visas as well as any other line or country specific documentation.

Pack any meds you need in your carry on and be sure to have prescriptions with you.

Most new ships will have USB charging ports next to the bed however this is by no means on all ships. Don’t get caught out and take a charger with you and a spare cable.

Travel Adaptor

Depending on where you are from, who you are sailing with and where you may need to take a travel adaptor with you to ensure that all your electronics will work.

I personally never travel anywhere without my trusty Universal travel adaptor that works in pretty much all locations.

Click here to shop universal travel adaptors.

Cross Body Anti Theft bag

Pickpockets are found anywhere that there are tourists. And unfortunately this includes Christmas Markets. Therefore you will want to protect yourself from pickpockets while on a river cruise and the sites you are visiting.

Out favourite pick pocket deterrent is to wear a cross body anti theft bag like this. I prefer these to a fanny pack as these can often mark you out as a tourist in Europe.

Click here to shop anti theft bags.

A backpack is also useful for Christmas Markets.

Compact Travel Umbrella

Rain can happen whenever you are traveling in Europe however Christmas Markets can be particularly rainy. So be sure to keep a compact travel umbrella with you at all times.

Click here to shop travel umbrellas.

The cold weather in Europe can dry out your lips very quickly so we recommend always having a lip balm with you when visiting Christmas Markets in Europe.

Click here to shop lip balm for cruise ships.

Although most ships provide toiletries I will always pack some on my own as I think they are better quality than those you get on board most cruise ships.

For more information on the  best toiletries to bring on a cruise  check out this post.

Moisturiser

As your lips can dry out in Winter, so can your skin when face with cold, wet and rainy weather. So on top of lip balm I always carry moisturizer with me. My favorite moisturizer for Winter is  this one.

Reusable Water bottle

You will be doing a lot of walking on river cruise excursions and it is good to stay hydrated. To stay healthy and save the environment we recommend always cruising with a travel water bottle.

And there are lots of great cruise themed water bottles out there too!  Click here to shop reusable water bottles for travel.

European Christmas Markets are beautiful and you will want to be taking lots of photos. Couple this with using your phone for transportation, maps and other travel essentials your battery will drain quickly. Therefore you will want to have a  battery pack  with you at all times

Many people find a lanyard is the best way to keep their cabin key safe and on them at all times on a cruise. You should keep your cruise card with you at all time as this acts as identification on board the ship and also as your payment method.

When looking for a cruise lanyard we think that the best ones are waterproof so can be used on shore excursions where you will be spending a lot of time in the water and can also be used to keep small amounts of cash and a government issued id.

Click here to shop the best lanyards for cruise travel.

And there you have it our full European Christmas Market River Cruise packing list! We hope this has answered all of your questions but if there is something you still have a question about just pop us a comment below!

How to Dress for Christmas Markets

By cleobella , August 19, 2022 in River Cruising

Cool Cruiser

We are taking a Christmas Market Cruise in mid December, will visit Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, Black Forest area, and Zurich.  I wonder how we should plan to dress for outside activities?  Would a light thermal coat be OK with gloves, scarves, layered with a sweater or thermal tee shirt underneath? Or do we need a heavy winter coat?  Also, do we need to bring boots, or can we get away with waterproof hiker type shoes or even running shoes?  We live in Ontario Canada, and it can be variable in December here but not usually super cold, there can be snow.  Is Germany/Alsace/ Switzerland the same?

We were in Alsace this past December and it was snowing... flurries. I wouldn't say you  need anything heavy and your first outfit should suffice. Nor should you need boots. You should insure you have a outer layer that is waterproof as you are more likely to see rain/ sleet than full on snow. You will be in a town and always will have the ability to duck into a shop to escape the weather for a bit.

We did a Danube Christmas. Different Ports of course, but our weather was a lot of overcast, drizzle rain light snow, full sun and umbrella required rain. So, a little of everything. Temperatures were 35-45F. Wore winter coats. Maybe a little overkill depending on your tolerance. No boots, but water proof Timberland shoes. Gloves, earmuffs, scarfs. water repellant  hat of hood. Long underware and hand warmers.Costco or Amazon is  a  cheap source for stuff you only need occationally. We did not buy anything special, but we did use, at one time or another, all that we brought. Ship provided umbrella used one morning. Cold breeze

Hand warmers are a great suggestion!  We took multiple packs with us and find that when your hands are warm it really helps!

As a German I can only recommend to check temperatures and weather forecasts.

I remember freezing on Cristmas markets even though I wore double layers of underware, a thick winter coat and all the scarves, gloves and so on.

At other times it was so warm (maybe  10 -15 C) that it was almost no fun to drink our famous hot wine, Glühwein.

Oh my ... 🤭

It can be brutally cold...  When we were in Cologne, it was the coldest December 1st in many years...   And - we are used to cold weather (we live in Whitby - so just down the road from you!!).  We did hit some snow, but also some cold, wet drizzle.

If possible - take a down jacket.  They can often be compressed into a small bag.  Warm socks, mitts, hat.  We didn't need boots, but were glad our shoes were somewhat water resistant.

CPT Trips

I wouldn’t want to count on a wet down coat unless I’m certain it’s really waterproof, and mine isn’t. I wear my heavy winter jacket onto the plane. It squishes just fine into the overhead.

Chances of Americans passing as locals at a Christmas market are really slim. It starts with the feet and goes downhill as people look up from there.

Christmas sweaters are quite un-German. I have seen them a bit more in shops in the last few years, though. Got my first sweat-shirt with Christmas motif ever two years ago.

Take a really good pair of shoes, thick sole, water-resistant material. As my fellow German said, the temperature can vary quite a bit from year to year. One thing that is more or less certain is that it will at least two degrees Celsius cooler in the Black Forest that in the valley. It could be rain in Breisach and proper good snow in the hills.

Are these hats/headgear also “un-German?”

FEA77603-6BAA-4B74-9DC8-3AC921332596.jpeg.923abef028e3b1316a6304d0feb0a0ab.jpeg

The Christmas Sweater chatter is making me laugh out loud!  Hate to say it, but I am well known for my festive Christmas attire here in Ontario during the holidays, and now my kids mock me by coming to Christmas Dinner, and Parties in Christmas Sweaters too, and dressing the kids up as well!  Now of course we call these sweaters  "Ugly Christmas Sweaters".  Some of them cost big bucks back in the day! I'll stick with a black thermal coat, waterproof hikers, red mitts, scarf and hat, and will plan to layer. Sehr Schick!  Love the hand warmers idea!  Shout out to Whitby!

Hot Glühwein cups make great handwarmers; empty ones make great souvenirs. Make sure you save luggage space to bring them home.

As for fashion,

E3985665-E810-4378-81F5-2275366C382B.thumb.webp.ed2251faed341f5249e417412583684a.webp

Yes, the head gear is the advance stage of "un-Germanness". 😁

But I have seen them donned after a glass of glühwein in recent years...

Good examples of winter gear in the photos. Definitely bring gloves etc. for the early excursions even if the weather report suggests pleasant temperatures. You may indeed hit mild afternoons. You could of course buy gloves and other accessories at your destination, may be a nice souvenir, but you may not want to spend precious time shopping for this with - especially with cold hands.

Enjoy your trip...  Although this is not in the "what to wear" department, remember to pack some bubble wrap and/or tissue paper.  Lots of treasures to be found in the markets - and you want to be able to get them home safely!!

Socks can also be used.

Great points Fran and CPT! Thank you!

  • 2 weeks later...

We did Nuremberg to Vienna in 2018 (first week in December).  I found that the important thing was to plan for layers.  The coldest I've ever been was sitting in the Cathedral in Passau waiting for a concert to start.  One thing I do recommend though which may seem odd.....  waterproof rain/snow pants. I had nice ones, not the slick fabric  We had drizzle off and on through out our walks/tours.  I got lots of jealous comments about them.   I could sit anywhere, and never worry about getting wet.  No uncomfortable wet pant legs.  I also brought my down jacket, which was only water resistant, lightweight rain jacket and wore them at the same time.   Kept my down jacket dry.

Canal archive

First CPT thank you I’m already working out how to make the headgear absolutely fantastic!

What to wear don’t forget the ‘silk’ and here I mean fabric I have a set of silk long johns, a pair of socks and of gloves there all so light and heat retaining they wash and wear overnight they’ve been with me everywhere even to winter camp now that’s cold.

I’ve thought of a silk balaclava but didn’t want to look like a Ninja 🥷

Take some bubble wrap and tape with you.  Really helps when packing all those treasures from the markets, including your new collection of Gluhwein cups!

Remember that you’ll likely be used to the weather more so than a person who lives in Florida for instance.

I find that I’m not bothered by the cold as much as those who live in the south.

I would think that the weather would be similar to that in Ontario and would dress for time spend outdoors.

Definitely hats and gloves. A good coat. I’m bringing my fleece lined tights and waterproof shoes. But I own and wear them a lot when I spend time outside. Also remember that you may spend more time sitting and that is colder than moving.

"Remember that you’ll likely be used to the weather more so than a person who lives in Florida for instance." Deb922

This is what we thought years ago (we live in NH).  We had looked at the  temperatures  on the Rhine and they were  comparable to our temps, but is a damp cold that feels colder!!!  All the suggestions are great, I use cashmere lined leather gloves and smart wool socks.  Dress in layers.  One Christmas Market cruise I did not need a heavy coat!
