This Day in Aviation
Important dates in aviation history, tag archives: clément-bayard no. 2, 16 october 1910.
16 October 1910: Maurice Clément-Bayard flew the dirigible, Clément-Bayard No. 2 , from the Astra Clément-Bayard airship hangar at La Motte-Breuil, France, to Wormwood Scrubs, England, with six passengers. This was the first crossing of the English Channel by airship. The 244 mile (393 kilometer) distance was covered in less than six hours.
The Chronicle Annual Register reported,
The airship Clément-Bayard No. 2 travelled from near Paris to Wormwood Scrubbs between 6.55 a.m. and 1.25 p.m. Her average altitude was 200–300 metres, her average speed about 60 kil. hourly.
— CHRONICLE OF EVENTS IN 1910 , Part II, at Page 33
A contemporary newspaper article described the event:
LONDON, October 16.
The airship Clement Bayard II., carrying seven passengers, has made a remarkable journey from Compiegne, 52 miles to the north-east of Paris, to London, alighting at Shepherd’s Bush, five miles to the west of St. Paul’s Cathedral, in 6 hours, 11 minutes. The distance travelled was approximately 150 miles.
The Clement Bayard left Compiegne at 7.15 a.m. yesterday, the weather conditions being perfect at the time. Boulogne, about 75 miles distant, was reached three hours later, and then the trip across the Channel was made in three quarters of an hour.
French torpedo-boat destroyers were echelonned across the English Channel, and acted as guides to the airship as far as Folkestone, on the coast of Kent, and 71½ miles east south-east of London.
The Clement Bayard, however, outdistanced each torpedo-boat destroyer in turn. Tunbridge, 42 miles beyond Folkestone, was reached at a quarter past 12, and three-quarters of an hour later St. Paul’s Cathedral, 29½ miles from Tunbridge, was passed, the Clement Bayard on this part of the journey going faster than motor-cars following the airship. The remaining distance to Shepherd’s Bush was accomplished shortly afterwards.
M. Clement Bayard was on board his airship, and the passengers also included Mr. William Harvey De Cros, the Unionist member for Hastings, who represented the British Parliamentary Aerial Committee.
The Clement Bayard I. was completed in April last, and was on the eve of making its departure for London, when the French Government exercised its right, and acquired the airship. In August M. Clement Bayard made several successful flights in the Clement Bayard II., the building of which was started immediately after the French Government acquired the Clement Bayard I. In September, 1909, the “Daily Mail” completed, at a cost of £5,000, a garage for an airship on land belonging to the War office. It was constructed to accommodate the Clement Bayard airship, which was to make the journey through the air from Paris to London. The British Government has the option of purchasing the vessel.
— The Mercury , Vol. XCIV, No. 12,658., Tuesday, 18 October 1910, Page 5, Column 2
Maurice Clément-Bayard was the son of the company’s founder, Gustave Adolphe Clément-Bayard, and would succeed him after his father’s death.
After arriving in England, Clément-Bayard No. 2 was deflated for transport to another location. The airship was damaged in transit and was never repaired.
Clément-Bayard No. 2 was 76.5 meters (251 feet) long, with a diameter of 13.2 meters (43 feet). The dirigible had a volume of 6,500 cubic meters (229,545 cubic feet). It was powered by two water-cooled, normally-aspirated, 1,590.75-cubic-inch-dispalcement (26.068 liters) Clément-Bayard four-cylinder overhead cam engines, which produced 120 horsepower, each. These turned two, two-bladed, fixed-pitch laminated wood propellers with a diameter of 6 meters (19 feet, 8 inches) at 350 r.p.m.
According to an article in American Machinist ,
. . . This engine is a four-cylinder, vertical, water-cooled motor, of the latest Clement racing type. The cylinders are cast separately and are copper jacketed; have a bore of 7.48 inches and a stroke of 9.05 inches [1,590.75 cubic inches, 26.07 liters] , giving a horsepower estimated at over 200. The valves are mechanically operated and placed in the cylinder head. A magneto is used for ignition. The weight is 1100 pounds [499 kilograms].
There will be two of these motors used in the new Clement-Bayard airship being constructed for the British government; each motor having a propeller of its own, although when desired, both motors can run one propeller, or one motor can run two propellers.
— American Machinist , Volume 33, Part I, 7 April 1910, at Page 645
The airship was debated in the British Parliament, with a question asked by Mr. Herbert Pike-Pease, M.P. (later, 1st Baron Daryngton): “ May I ask the right hon. Gentleman if he thinks the action of the War Office in regard to this airship was justified? If the airship was fit for service, why was it not used, and if it was not fit for service, why was it purchased? “
Colonel John Edward Bernard Seely, D.S.O., (Later, 1st Baron Mottistone, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., T.D., P.C., J.O., D.L.), the Secretary of State for War, replied, “ I think part of the last two supplementary questions is answered in some of the replies I have just given. Of course, it is the fact that the envelope of this balloon leaked so badly that it would have been very costly to have inflated it. No doubt mistakes were made on both sides, by hon. Gentlemen on both sides of the House, as well as by my Department, but we have not made half as many mistakes in this matter as our neighbours. “
Mr. Pike Pease then asked, “ Was not the leakage known to the War Office before the ship was purchased? “
Colonel Seely answered, “ It was before my time. There was a strong Committee of this House engaged in those transactions, and I understand they thought the airship was serviceable, and I suppose we thought it was when it was taken over. Mistakes must be made in a new matter of this kind. We have not made very many mistakes of a large kind in the matter of airships. We have been signally successful. “
Earlier in the debate, Colonel Seely stated that, “ The engines are still available and are at the aircraft factory. “

Three friends drove from California to Mexico for a surfing trip. Then they disappeared

Last month, two brothers and one of their friends crossed from the United States into Mexico to explore Baja California’s famous surf breaks. Pictures posted online by one of the brothers, Callum Robinson, 33, show the men gazing out at the ocean with coffee, enjoying street tacos and relaxing with beers on a roof deck.
After camping on a remote stretch of beach south of Ensenada, the friends were supposed to check into an Airbnb in Rosarito Beach last weekend. But they never arrived. The last time their relatives heard from the men was April 27.
Their disappearance in one of Mexico’s most violent states has triggered a massive search involving local authorities, the FBI and the Mexican marines.
“We are looking for them on land and at sea,” Baja California Atty. Gen. María Elena Andrade Ramírez said Thursday. “We are making every effort.”

Bodies found in Baja California during search for missing tourists, Mexican officials say
Mexican officials say three bodies are found in the Baja California area where two Australian brothers and their American friend went missing while on a surf trip.
May 4, 2024
Several troubling clues suggested the men may have been the victims of violence.
Authorities said they had located the burned-out remains of the white Chevrolet pickup the men were traveling in and had recovered a cellphone that belonged to one of them. Officials have questioned three people in connection to the case, Andrade said, although she did not say whether they are considered suspects.
On Friday, several news outlets cited unnamed officials who said three bodies had been recovered near where the surfers went missing. A spokesman for the Baja California attorney general’s office said he could not confirm the discovery of the bodies.

Robinson, a lacrosse player, and his brother, Jake, a 30-year-old doctor, are Australian nationals. Their friend, Carter Rhoad, 30, is from Atlanta and founded an online apparel company in San Diego, according to his Facebook profile.
The group was last seen near Santo Tomas, about 70 miles south of Rosarito, authorities said.
Debra Robinson, Jake and Callum’s mother, appealed for help on social media after days passed without word from her sons, noting that Callum is diabetic. “This is a very dire situation,” she said.

Baja California’s rugged coastline and epic waves have long attracted surfers from north of the border. But visiting remote areas makes them vulnerable to crime, said Serge Dedina, a longtime surfer in the area and executive director of Wildcoast, an environmental organization that works in Baja.
He said he frequently cautions surfers who visit the area to stay in groups, avoid driving at night and sleep near fish camps. “Do not go out in isolated places if you can avoid it,” he tells them.
In recent years, the state has been convulsed in violence, much of it connected to the drug trade. Last year, authorities recorded 2,116 homicides in the state of Baja California — one of the highest rates in Mexico.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in his last year in office, ran on a pledge to reduce violence in Mexico. But while homicides nationally have dipped slightly during his six-year term, they continue to hover near record highs.
Cecilia Sánchez Vidal in The Times’ Mexico City bureau contributed to this report.

After 3 Tourists Go Missing, Bodies Are Found in Baja California
Mexican authorities recovered the three bodies as a search went on for two Australian tourists and a U.S. citizen who disappeared while on vacation.
By Emiliano Rodríguez Mega
Reporting from Mexico City
A dayslong search for three missing tourists who disappeared near a surfing town close to the U.S.-Mexico border ended tragically on Friday as the authorities said that they had located three bodies in a water hole.
Two Australian brothers, Callum and Jake Robinson, and their friend, Jack Carter Rhoad, a U.S. citizen, had been on vacation surfing and camping along the coast near the Mexican city of Ensenada when they disappeared on Saturday.
Debra Robinson, the mother of the brothers, said in a social media post on Wednesday that they had booked an Airbnb in another coastal town north of Ensenada but never showed up there.
“Reaching out to anyone who has seen my two sons. They have not contacted us,” she pleaded to the more than 120,000 members of a community Facebook page created for people interested in touring Mexico’s Baja California peninsula.
She added that Callum was a Type 1 diabetic.
The state’s attorney general, María Elena Andrade Ramírez, said in a news conference on Thursday that prosecutors were investigating three people related to the case but that crucial time had passed since the disappearance of the three men.
“Unfortunately, it wasn’t until the last few days that they were reported missing,” Ms. Andrade Ramírez told reporters. “So, that meant that important hours or time was lost.”
In an interview, Ms. Andrade Ramírez said that after close examination of a 50-foot-deep water hole in La Bocana beach, near the town of Santo Tomás, Mexican authorities found three male bodies early on Friday. The already decomposed remains, she added, “meet the characteristics to assume with a high degree of probability” that they are the Robinson siblings and Mr. Rhoad.
Researchers will perform DNA tests to confirm the findings.
Prosecutors also believe that the three people tied to the deaths tried to seize the victims’ vehicle. When they resisted, Ms. Andrade Ramírez said, one man took out a gun, opened fire and then tried to dispose of their bodies. That person has been arrested.
“This aggression seems to have occurred in an unforeseen, circumstantial manner,” she added. “We pledge that this crime will not go unpunished.”
Human remains of a fourth male body, which has not yet been identified and is not connected to this case, was also found at the same site.
In 2022, 192 American citizens died in Mexico, State Department figures show , but most of those deaths were accidents or suicides. Only 46 were ruled as homicides.
The big waves in Baja California have long attracted throngs of surfers and travelers, many of whom have dealt with rising crime rates for nearly two decades.
But record levels of violence have hit the state in recent years. Government data shows that Baja California currently holds first place in vehicle theft and second place in homicides, most of which are related to drug dealing or organized crime, Mexico’s secretary of defense, Luis Cresencio Sandoval, said this year.
An official familiar with the investigation, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said a white pickup truck that the missing tourists had been traveling in was found charred near La Bocana beach. Other belongings and pieces of evidence were also being analyzed, the official added.
The swift effort to find the tourists was a rare exception in a country where nearly 100,000 people remain missing, according to the latest count provided by Mexican officials in March.
A majority of cases remain unsolved. Family members and volunteers are left on their own to follow up on leads, but the presence of cartels and a lack of support from the authorities make searching a dangerous mission .
The recent case in Ensenada recalled an episode in 2015 in which two Australian surfers, Adam Coleman and Dean Lucas, were killed as they drove across Sinaloa, another state in northern Mexico. Local authorities arrested three people who said they shot the two friends after they resisted a robbery. Their bodies were found inside their van, which had been doused in gasoline and set on fire.

Perth brothers Jake and Callum Robinson missing during surfing trip in Baja California in Mexico
The WA premier has described as "distressing" reports two Perth brothers have disappeared while on a camping and surfing trip in northern Mexico.
Jake and Callum Robinson, both aged in their 30s, failed to arrive at holiday accommodation in the city of Rosarito.
It's understood they were surfing and camping at the popular surfing spot Punta San Jose near the city of Ensanada.
They were believed to be travelling with Jack Carter Rhoad, who is an American citizen and is also missing.
Their mother Debra Robinson has appealed for information on social media.
"They have not contacted us since April 27 ... they are travelling with another friend; an American citizen," the social media post reads.
"Callum is a Type 1 diabetic so there is also a medical concern.
"Please contact me if you have seen them or know their whereabouts."
In a statement, Ms Robinson said the family continued to hope the brothers would be located.
"We sincerely appreciate everyone's concern and thoughts at this time. We continue to have hope that our two beautiful boys are found."
"It is a deeply distressing time for us and we ask the media to respect our privacy at this time."
Reports of woman in custody
Local media reported while searching for the men around La Bocana, authorities discovered one of the trio's phones had been switched on around an hour's drive of where the men were last seen.
"A woman … about 25 years old … was detained in possession of it [in the upper part of Maneadero]," reporter Mario Muñoz told the ABC, citing local police sources.
He said she was also found carrying drugs and would be handed over to the state attorney general's office.
"The state prosecutor's office will investigate the disappearance of the three tourists," Mr Muñoz said.
Mr Munoz supplied the ABC with pictures of the area in Punta San José where police are searching.
The ABC has contacted local and state police to confirm this information.
Social media posts stop
A friend of the brothers, Dan, said social media updates from the pair stopped at the weekend.
"Callum lives over in America and Jake was visiting and [they] sort of posted fairly regularly about their trip up until the weekend," he told ABC Radio Perth.
"They haven't actually checked into where they were meant to be on Saturday, and no one's been able to get in contact with them since.
"We believe Callum was due back at work last week and hasn't shown up … so obviously friends and family are quite concerned."
"I think everyone's just sort of hoping that we can spread the word for anyone that has any contacts in America or around that area that might be able to put the word out.
"I believe that Jake and Callum's parents are trying to get a flight over there now."
'Very worrying': premier
Premier Roger Cook said he was aware of the situation and described it as "really quite distressing".
"This must be very worrying for the families involved," he said.
"When we do send our young men and women overseas to enjoy that adventure holiday, they invite an element of risk.
"I understand one of the individuals has a medical condition that would need ongoing care.
"I share [the] concerns of all Western Australians in terms of their welfare."
'High degree of caution': Travel advice
According to an online lacrosse profile, Callum Robinson attended high school at Sacred Heart College in Perth before travelling to the United States to play college lacrosse.
Lacrosse Australia has released a statement expressing concern over the disappearance.
"We urge the Australian (and global) lacrosse family to continue sharing the post from Callum's friends and family … in the hope that Callum, Jake and Jack are found safe and sound," it said.
Both brothers have regularly posted images of their travels to social media.
In 2015, Australian surfers Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman were murdered while travelling through Mexico in a camper van.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to the family of the two Australians.
"Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment," its statement said.
The Department's latest travel advice for Mexico is for people to exercise a high degree of caution due to the threat of violent crime.
The advice said Mexican government statistics show Baja California Sur and Quintana Roo have reported significant increases in drug-related violence, particularly murder.
Baja California Sur and Baja California are among the states with the highest homicide rates.
