The trip along the coast of Karnataka will start from the port city of Mangalore or Mangaluru. Mangalore can be easily reached by air, road, or train. The trip would ideally start from the morning of Day 1 in Mangalore. The places and experiences recommended in Mangalore are detailed below.

Mangalore – Coastal Karnataka Itinerary

Proceed for local sightseeing after breakfast
Start the day by visiting the famous Kadri Manjunath temple which is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and has a history dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries
Next, visit another famous temple of Mangalore, the Kudroli Gokarnatheswara temple, known for its famous Dussehra celebrations
Proceed for lunch at one of the restaurants in Mangalore, if you like seafood, you can experience the flavours and aromas of Shetty Lunch Home, or if you are vegetarian, you can have lunch at any of the many vegetarian restaurants that serve authentic local food
Late afternoon proceed towards Udupi
On the way to Udupi spend some time at the Padubidri Beach, one of the Blue Flag certified beaches of Karnataka

After this visit Kaup Beach and Kaup Lighthouse which is about 14 kilometres from Padubidri

Udupi – Coastal Karnataka Tour – Day 2

On Day 2 of your coastal Karnataka trip, you will explore the temple city of Udupi and its vicinity. Udupi figures prominently in the coastal Karnataka tourist places map.

Early morning proceed to the famous Udupi Sri Krishna Matha for darshan along with other two main temples, Shree Ananteshwara Temple, and Shri Chandramouleeshwara Temple
After the temple visit, have breakfast and proceed to St Lawrence Church in Attur , which is about 50 kilometres from Udupi

After spending about 1 hour at the beautiful Attur Church it is time to head to the next destination ( 25 kilometres away ) which is the Varanga Jain temple

After spending about 1 hour at the Varanga Jain Temple, you head back to Udupi for lunch

After lunch visit the Hastashilpa Heritage Village Museum where you can spend a couple of hours

In the evening head towards Malpe Beach for water sports including parasailing, banana boat, Jet Skiing etc., and have a nice view of the sunset on the Arabian Sea

Have a nice dinner either at Malpe Beach at the Fisherman’s Cove or at any other restaurant based on your preferences

Coastal Karnataka Places-St Mary's Island

Today you will explore some of the beautiful beach places in Karnataka including the exotic St. Mary’s Island. The island is a picturesque island known for its columnar basalt rocks.

In the morning you head back to Malpe Beach to take the ferry to the beautiful St. Mary’s Island
Breakfast is at St. Mary’s Island, and you can spend about an hour on the island
Head back to your hotel and after lunch check out and leave for Baindur which is about 70 kilometres from Udupi

In Baindur check in to your hotel, we recommend Sai Vishram Resort which is right near the beach
Spend the evening on the beach enjoying a sunset and water sports or just walking on the sands

Tip For The Day: Do watch a Yakshagana performance in Udupi if possible.

Baindur and Kasarkod – Coastal Karnataka Road Trip – Day 4

Early morning you can take a walk to view a spectacular sunrise from the top of a hillock in Baindur followed by watching the early morning activity on the Baindur beach, also known as Ottinene Beach or Byndoor beach
You can opt for an exciting ride on an airboat in the backwaters

After lunch checkout and leave for the next destination which is Murdeshwar at a distance of about 32 kilometres
Visit the famous Murudeshwar temple and spend time on the beach, indulge in water sports
Night halt at Murdeshwar

Kasarkod Blue Flag Beach – Day 5

After breakfast checkout and leave for the next destination which is the Kasarkod Blue Flag Beach at a distance of about 24 kilometres
Spend a couple of hours at the Kasarkod beach and leave for Gokarna which is about 55 kilometres away
Check in to the hotel in Gokarna and proceed for lunch, relax in the hotel

In the evening proceed for an evening dinner cruise aboard the White Pearl

Road condition – The road conditions for this coastal Karnataka tour by road are generally good. The Day Wise Itinerary

Day 1 – Bangalore – Mangalore – Bekal – Mangalore

Distance – 469 km

Road Condition – The road condition is patchy between Hassan and Sakleshpur as road widening is in progress. Shiradi Ghat also has some bad patches but doable. Here is the latest update on this route.

Hassan to Sakleshpur – Although roads are decent, you need to navigate well as you will have to away from one side of the road to another.

On Shiradi ghat Donigal till Marenahalli – A lot of bad stretch, and dug up due to work in progress

After the ghats – Upinangady to BC Road a lot of bad stretches. Be assured to be caught is a gridlock at Kalladka, due to the flyover construction..

Alternatively, if you want to avoid Shiradi Ghat, then you can choose to take Hassan – Mudigere – Kottigehara – Charamadi Ghat – Mangalore route. Google Map – https://goo.gl/maps/MBKJ2TbcJ6rDNbd59

Depart Bangalore around 6.30 AM. Have breakfast on the way. Our favorite spot is Swathi Delicacy before Yediyur. Don’t miss their Masala Dosa and Filter coffee!
After Sakleshpur, enjoy a lovely drive through the Malnad region till you reach Mangalore. Stop for sip famous KTea at Laxmi Nivas Hotel at Kalladaka before Mangalore!

Reach Mangalore by lunch.
After lunch and rest, drive to Bekal to visit the lovely fort built by the sea by Tipu Sultan. Though in Kerala now, it retains the flavour of coastal Karnataka with many speaking Kannada and Tulu languages.

An hour’s drive from Mangalore will take you to Bekal. Spend an hour at the fort and then head to Bekal Beach. Enjoy the beach and lovely sunset and return to Mangalore.

Day 2 – Mangalore – Udupi

Distance – 75 KMs

Road Condition – Excellent. Watch out for speed breakers at some places on the highway, especially at junctions

After an early breakfast, check out from your hotel and depart Mangalore to the famous temple of Durga Parameshwari at Kateel. Spend 45 minutes here and after Darshan head to Udupi.

Reach Udupi for a late lunch. After lunch, visit the famous Krishna temple at Udupi and explore the surroundings.

Madhwa Sarovara – The holy tank

In the evening drive to Kaup Beach which has a British-built lighthouse and a lovely beach. Enjoy the lovely sunset and return to Udupi. After Kaup or Kapu drive to another lovely beach at Padubidri which is one of the two blue flag beaches in Karnataka.

Have dinner in Udupi’s famous Diana restaurant in the city or Masala Dosa and Goli Bajji in Udupi’s iconic Mitra Samaja restaurant near the temple.

Day 3 – Udupi – Malpe – Kollur – Kundapur

Distance – 119 KMs

Road Condition – Good

Explore the island and return and drive to Kollur to visit the Mookambika temple.

Have lunch in Kollur. After visiting the temple, drive to Kundapur.

Check into the hotel drive to the Kodi beach and climb up the Kodi Light House for a panoramic view of the Kundapur landscape. Enjoy the sunset on Kodi Beach.

Have dinner at famous Shetty’s Lunch Home in Kundapur if you love Chicken and Fish . Taste the best coastal Karnataka food here! The Chicken Ghee Roast and Kaney Fish Fry is supposed to be the best!

Day 4 – Kundapur – Maravanthe – Bhatkal – Murudeshwar

After Breakfast check out from your hotel and drive to Murudeshwar.
Marvel at the Maravanthe which has a river on one side and a beach on the other side! Spend a few minutes for photo ops and drive to Murudeshwar.

If you are non-vegetarian and love Biryani, then stop over for tasty Bhatkal Biryani Lunch in either Kwality Hotel or Pai’s Fish land or City light which all are on the highway and reach Murudeshwar. You may pack it and eat in Murudeshwar.
After checking into the hotel and lunch, explore the temple with the second tallest Shiva statue in the world and its surroundings and head to the beach for a lovely time and relax watching a beautiful sunset. Don’t miss going to the 20th floor – there is an elevator – of Raja Gopura for a mesmerising view of the Shiva statue surrounded by sea!
Visit the cave museum under the Shiva Statue by paying Rs 10 as an entry fee. You will be able to hear the mythological story of Ravana and Atma linga and how Murudeshwar came into existence. Take the lift to the second tallest 237 ft temple tower to enjoy the lovely aerial view of Lord Shiva, the Arabian Sea and the city. Charges – Rs. 20 per adult and Rs. 10 for children. Timing: Morning: 7 AM – 12:45 PM, Afternoon: 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM. Go early to avoid the rush. Visit the main temple for linga Darshan. Temple timing: 6:00 AM – 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM – 8:15 PM. Ample Car parking is available and is Rs. 30.

Day 5 – Murudeshwar – Idagunji – Apsarakonda – Vannalli beach – Mangodlu beach – Mirjan fort – Gokarna

Depart from Murudeshwar after breakfast. Enjoy the lovely coastal drive interspersed with rivers. This is the best part of driving in Coastal Karnataka!
Reach Idagunji Ganapati temple which is one of famous Ganapati temples in India. Spend 45 minutes here and after darshan, head to Apsarakonda
Stop over at Apsarakonda to see the lovely waterfalls. Spend 30 minutes here and drive to pristine Vannali and Mangodlu beaches near Kumta. Have lunch in Kumta.

After Kumta return to NH 66 and drive straight to Gokarna. Stop over for few minutes to explore lovely Mirjan fort which is on the highway.

Reach Gokarna by late afternoon. After checking in, head straight to OM beach. Relax on the beach and enjoy the lovely sunset.

Day 6 – Gokarna to Karwar

Get up early and visit the famous Mahabaleshwara temple in Gokarna which has Atma Linga. See details here – http://www.srigokarna.org/
After darshan, have breakfast and head straight to Karwar.
After checking into a hotel, go for a cruise on the backwaters of Kali River. You can go to Kali River Garden and can go for boating in the Kali River from there. You can also make a trip to Kurumgad island to visit the Narasimha temple. Check with hotel on ferry details.

Kali river garden is a nice place to visit for boating. In the evening it has colourful musical fountains as well

Return for lunch and enjoy excellent sea food lunch at Amrut restaurant . It also has good vegetarian menu.
After lunch visit the Warship Museum and rock garden which is on the highway in city.

The best time do this Coastal Karnataka Road trip is in the winter months of October to January. Even in winter, the day temperatures will be high.

Wear good sunscreen lotion while on outdoors. Also wear a good hat.

Carry a good binocular. It will be useful.
Don’t be in a hurry. You will get many places to stop and click pictures.
The cruise timings of St Mary’s Island may keep changing. Confirm at your hotel about it. Cruises will not be operational in Monsoon months of June to September.

Coastal Karnataka : Saga of an exciting road trip

This story is as much about Coastal Karnataka, as about the exciting road trip that we had this winter. Coastal Karnataka is serene, tranquil and gorgeous, and largely unexplored by travelers outside of Karnataka. We had planned for a road trip by taxi from Goa to Mangalore. But we ended up doing it by local transport- an experiment we wanted to do for a long time. And buoy! Was it exciting!

Coastal Karnataka : Hidden gems along the Arabian sea

Dotted with white sand beaches, lush green forests, and culture-rich small towns and quaint villages, Coastal Karnataka just stretches out of your imagination to the realm of a great travel experience. From Karwar in north to Mangalore in south, it’s a magical stretch of more than 270 kilometers. It runs between the gorgeous blue Arabian sea on one side, and the verdant green Western Ghats on the other.

However, ironically, Coastal Karnataka is much underrated as a travel destination. One might have heard about the individual places like Udupi, Gokarna and Mangalore; but seen as a whole, this region is a treasure trove for travellers. And especially, if you are a lover of off-beat locations, Coastal Karnataka is heaven for you.

Coastal Karnataka : The Plan

Honestly, it was difficult to plan a road-trip about which you have little information. So, we had thought of taking it as it would come, and be flexible. After our Goa sojourn , we had only three days on hand for Coastal Karnataka road trip. This time as an experiment, we decided to explore Coastal Karnataka only by local transport. But the problem was that the buses didn’t run on long routes. So, we had to change buses at more places than planned. It meant that the initial plans went haywire!

Ultimately, the plan vs. actual scenario turned out to be like this:

Actual: Palolem to Karwar (via Canacona and Ankola); spent the night in Karwar
Actual: Karwar to Gokarna | Gokarna to Murudeshwar | Murudeshwar to Udupi (reached very late night)
Actual: Same as planned

So, as you can see, there were quite a few places to cover in Coastal Karnataka in less than 3 days! But the idea was not to explore the places, rather to have a glimpse, and enjoy a road-trip.

Day-1 : Palolem to Karwar

After winding up a beautiful day in Palolem, we took an autorickshaw to drop us at Canacona bus stop. Contrary to our expectation, there was no direct bus to Gokarna. So, we decided to take a bus to Karwar (27 kms away from Canacona), and spend a night there. We reached Karwar in the evening, and found a guesthouse for ourselves near the bus station. After checking in, we went for an evening walk around the town.

We were really hungry by then; so, first, we had dinner at a popular eatery. And then, while roaming the streets of Karwar, we came across an old temple where a festival was underway. It was interesting to watch the devotees engage in traditional rituals and bhajans. We tasted some local sweet-snack, and soaked in the general excitement near the temple. Though we still wanted to roam around for longer, we were tired and early next morning we had to leave for Gokarna!

The town is located so close to the Arabian sea that we could hear sound of roaring sea late in the night. Karwar played a very important role in the evolution of Konkani culture and language. Apart from its popular beaches, there are mountains for trekking lovers, islands, a historic fort, ancient temples, and a popular mosque.

Day-2 : Karwar - Gokarna - Udupi

Reaching the bus station next morning, we realized that there was no direct bus to Gokarna from Karwar! So, we took a bus to Ankola (37 kms away), and from there, changed for Gokarna (26 kms). I just loved the bus ride with amazing views of boats and ships floating over the Arabian sea. We reached Gokarna by 11 AM. Quickly, we rented an autorickshaw to visit two beaches- the Om beach, and the Kudle beach.

Gokarna is a small, adorable, but largely unexplored town located by the sea. In recent times, overcrowding of south Goa beaches is pushing a lot of peace-seeking and adventure-seeking tourists to Gokarna. Though tourism is increasing steadily in Gokarna, it still gives the ambience of old days. Earlier it was popular for pilgrimage, but now it is getting popular among backpackers and trekkers. They stay long days, and trek across all the beaches, starting either from Om beach or Kudle beach and covering the Half-moon beach and Paradise beach through the mountain slopes.

I would describe the beach in three words- white-sandy, rocky-terrain and tranquil. Secluded by hills with vegetative cover, the beach augurs serenity that makes one want to spend long hours with oneself doing nothing. A clear sky over the sea and undulating rocky terrain made the beach look serene and attractive. Interestingly, the beach is in the shape of ‘Om’ (Hindu symbol), on which it is named.

I felt like sitting there for long hours reading a book with coffee in hand, and take a stroll on the beach talking to like-minded people! Talking of coffee, the best place on the beach is the “Namaste Cafe”, a very popular cafe for obvious reasons. It gives an amazing panoramic view of the beach, and an ambiance to hang out.

Kudle beach:

From the Om beach, we moved to our next destination- the Kudle beach. It’s again another secluded beach. In fact, all the beaches in Gokarna are secluded with gorgeous green cover. From the last drivable point, it took us a 20 minute trekking to reach the Kudle beach.

The C-shaped beach looked really attractive even from a long distance. During our short stay there, we met three young chaps/adventurers from Hyderabad who had just completed their trekking in the adjacent hills covering all the beaches in Gokarna. I could clearly see the excitement and the happiness writ large on their faces. I instantly felt the urge to come back to Gokarna at the earliest! But then it was time to say good-bye to Kudle beach, and Gokarna.

Moving to Murudeshwar:

The auto-rickshaw driver dropped us at the bus station. As we were preparing to board a bus to Murudeshwar (80 kms), we realized that Suvendu forgot his jacket in the rickshaw! A long time bad habit of his! The rickshaw driver was kind enough to give it back on a phone call. However, we had to wait for the next bus! Lost some more precious day-light there!

To our good fortune, the bus dropped us near Murudeshwar just in time for the sunset. The bus dropped off on the highway, some 2 kms away from the Murudeshwar temple. We took an auto-rickshaw to reach the temple by 5.00 PM. As we were super excited about watching the sunset from above the Raja Gopuram (entrance tower) of the temple, Suvendu rushed to get the tickets (for only Rs.10).

Murudeshwar in the mythology:

According to Hindu mythology, Murudeshwar (Mrideshwara in ancient times) is the place where one of the pieces of Atma-Linga (soul) of Shiva (Hindu God) was dropped by Ravana (the demon King). In fact, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Vishnu had tricked him in order to prevent him from becoming immortal. To read the complete story, click here .

Though Murudeshwar has an ancient origin, the main temple was built in the 14th century by the Vijayanagar rulers. The impressive Gopuram and the Shiva statue were built in 2008 only.

Murudeswar temple complex has three main sections- the Raja Gopuram (entrance), the main temple and the huge Shiva statue (popular in Instagram). Standing at 237 feet (=72 mt) high, the Raja Gopuram is the second tallest Gopuram in India. Standing below the Gopuram, I was speechless! The massive tower, designed in south Indian architectural style with intricately carved statues, was so impressive!

When we reached the elevator to go to the 18th floor of the Gopuram (of the 20 floors) , there was a small que. They managed the crowd very well, I must say. We felt so lucky that we reached there at the perfect time, just when the sun was going down the horizon by turning the sky bright orange! The panoramic view of the Shiva statue (123 ft=37 mt) by the sea facing the temple, and the sea beach was absolutely spectacular. The Arabian sea surrounds the temple complex on three sides; so, you can imagine the amazing view from the top, especially of the beach.

Onward to Udupi:

After the sunset, we spent about half an hour at the temple complex, and then came to the highway to take our next bus to Udupi, 103 kms away.

After a long waiting, we got the bus, but there was no seat! You can imagine how difficult it would be to stand in a moving bus after a long day in the sun! But luckily, we got two seats midway.

Besides, we were so hungry that we could eat grass! And as if the driver could sense it, he stopped the bus and Suvendu brought some food from a roadside eatery to much respite from hunger.

We reached Udupi around 11 PM, and didn’t have a hotel to check-in! Actually, we were expecting a number of hotels near the bus station. But there was hardly any! Taking the help of google ratings, and google maps, we identified a hotel nearby, and walked up to the hotel. Fortunately, they had a room for us. We checked-in immediately, and took a good sleep to revitalize our bodies for the next day.

Day-3 : Udupi - Mangalore - Delhi

Udupi has been a center of pilgrimage since ancient times with two very important temples attracting scores of devotees. These temples- Chandramauleshwara temple and Anantheshwara temple are still there; but the town is now famous for another temple- Srikrishna Math. Along with its religious importance, Udupi’s diverse natural beauty attracts thousands of visitors. Lovely beaches, rivers, backwaters, and forests make fore a relaxed few days. The amalgamation of cultural importance and natural beauty makes Udupi such an amazing place to explore!

Udupi has so many amazing places to explore that 1 day would never be enough. However, we had chosen our places of interest by prior research.

Srikrishna Math:

We started our last day around 9.00 AM by visiting Srikrishna Math. The Math was located at a walkable distance from the hotel. Though we couldn’t enter the temple (prayer time was over), the outside environment was quite devotional. People were paying obeisance from outside only. We loved taking pictures of the Gopuram (entrance tower) and the beautifully decorated chariot standing outside the temple.

According to legends, in the 13th century AD, a ship coming from Dwarka carrying the statue of Balakrishna faced a storm at Udupi coast. The saint Madhavacharya helped the ship to safety, and thus, got the statue of Balakrishna as a gift.

Madhavacharya established the Srikrishna Math and instituted the statue there. Since then this temple became popular among the devotees. Madhavacharya established 7 more Maths in Karnataka to popularize the Dvaita Vedanta philosophy .

From near the temple, we hired an auto-rickshaw to show us around Udupi. To make things convenient, and to our good fortune, we got an amazing human being as the auto-rickshaw driver- Satish.

Sometimes, while travelling, you meet absolutely adorable people. This time, it was our autorickshaw driver friend- Satish. A middle-aged man with a warm and golden heart.

Neither he understood much Hindi, nor we understood any Kannada. But luckily, he managed some broken Hindi, and we got some communication going!

While talking to us during the drive, he actually broke down explaining the plight of his sister’s broken marriage! Such an emotional and kind hearted person!

He went out of the way to help us in everything we needed. On the way to the Kemmannu bridge, he actually took us to his home, and introduce to his lovely wife, and loving mother-in-law. They even offered us some food and beverages! Their love and affection filled our heart with joy. This indeed is the essence of travel, and travel indeed is the essence of life !

Malpe beach:

Our first stop was the Malpe beach. This is the most popular beach in Udupi with water sports, food stalls, etc. I especially loved the art work on the coconut trees by the beach. Besides, the fishing boats, fishermen, and visitors engaged in myriad beach activities made the beach vibes come alive.

Malpe Sea-walkway:

About 2 kms away from the Malpe beach is the Malpe sea-walkway (came up recently in 2018). The walkway is situated at the tourist jetty where boats leave for the St. Mary’s island. It goes 450 meters into the sea, and provides for a pleasant stroll with fresh air brushing your hair. As we were there early in the afternoon, it was too hot for a walk. But we did take a few lovely pictures there.

Kemmannu hanging bridge:

It’s a hidden gem nestled in the lap of nature, located in Thonse village towards the Delta point. Kemmannu bridge, a 280 ft long suspension bridge over the Swarna river , gives the most photogenic view of the place. Set in a serene village environment, it has a typical rustic charm. We loved walking over the bridge to the other side and watch the river flow below our feet.

Some visitors were engaged in kayaking in the river. I definitely wanted to do the same, in case I had some more time! Of all the places in Udupi, Kemmannu bridge was the place where I wanted to spend a lot more time.

Hoode beach:

Though this was not in our plan, Satish suggested and took us there on the way to the Delta point. It’s a long narrow strip of beach, very narrow, maybe only 10 feet wide! But lined by coconut trees and big boulders, it looked beautiful.

After having a look around, we moved to our last destination for the day: the Delta point.

Delta point:

The road towards the Delta point was awesomely handsome! It runs between the Sita river on one side, and the Arabian sea on the other! Delta point is the point where the river meets the sea. As we reached the Delta point, I felt as if it was the end of landmass on earth! The view of river meeting the sea was really enchanting.

Further, this meeting point forms a beach too- the Delta beach. Observing the small crabs come out of their holes on the beach was delightful. And watching the fishing boats coming from, and going into the sea was fascinating!

Places we missed out in Udupi:

From the Delta point, Satish took us to the bus station where we got on to a bus to Mangalore. We had been to Mangalore exactly one year before this trip, and had explored a bit then. So, we decided to directly move to the airport.

We had an indirect flight to Delhi via Mumbai; reached home well after midnight. Though we were extremely exhausted by then, the thrill of the exciting trip kept us in good spirits.

Coastal Karnataka : Road trip tips

Start and finish:.

If you are from Karnataka, well, of course, you would start at a point closer to you.
But, if you are from outside, I would suggest starting from north, i.e. Karwar and ending in south, i.e. Mangalore. Because at the end of the road trip, you would be tired, and would like to take a flight rather than a train. And Mangalore has an airport. There is no airport near Karwar; but has a railway station. So, it’s good to reach Karwar by a train, and take flight from Mangalore.

Local buses:

Buses don’t run for long distances on the coastal route. So, you would have to change frequently. If you have time on hand, that’s great. Otherwise, plan your itinerary keeping enough time for transits.

What a road trip that was!

Long road trips with frequent changes are never easy. And we didn’t have the luxury of time as well. We could have easily taken a cab somewhere to ease things out. But no. We decided to keep it difficult, in order to experience the difficulties associated with budget trips. We stayed in modest accommodations, and ate at small eateries. In spite of all the difficulties, we could make it, and we really enjoyed the trip.

With age catching up, we are not sure if we can do this more often. But one thing is sure that we will keep it simple and cost-effective all the time.

Reflecting on some learning:

Road trips are tiring, but extremely rewarding. You get to see the people of the region up close, and interact with them while travelling in a local bus.
The best beaches in India are not in Goa! Gokarna has some of the most beautiful beaches in India.
Overcoming the fear of the unknown. When we started the road trip, we hardly had any information of the region. But we just kept going!
Language can not be a barrier in establishing relationships. My mother tongue is Gujarati, Suvendu’s is Odiya, and Satish’s language was Kannada. But we did communicate well.

In this trip, we could explore only 3 places to some extent (didn’t quite explore Karwar and Mangalore). However, there are quite a few smaller and even lesser known places, which are worth spending time. Places like Manipal, Varanga, Baindur, Hannovar beach, Jog falls and Kumta are quite lovely places in their own right. Besides, due to paucity of time, we couldn’t even explore the places that we visited, very well. So, we will definitely come back for a slow-travel in this region, especially to explore the myriad flavors of the not-so-touristy places.

Just awesome experience while reading it, a three day trip seems to be a great learning and discovery. What you plan and what actually happens has a great learning, so sometimes what we plan actually does not happens all the times. Day 1 started from Palolem to Karwar. What I came to know about Karwar is Karwar played a very important role in the evolution of Konkani culture and language. Apart from its popular beaches, there are mountains for trekking lovers, islands, a historic fort, ancient temples, and a popular mosque. Day 2 is the most interesting and my favourite trip Karwar – Gokarna – Udupi. Coming to Udupi , I have heard lot about Gokarna , Gokarna Gokarna is a small, adorable, but largely unexplored town located by the sea and it has lot of beaches may that be Om beach or Kudle beach and covering the Half-moon beach and Paradise beach through the mountain slopes. Next was Murudeshwar which has lot of history and architectural temples.watching sunset from Raja Gopuram is stunning and not to forget The panoramic view of the Shiva statue (123 ft=37 mt) by the sea facing the temple, and the sea beach was absolutely spectacular. Day 3 Udupi – Mangalore – Delhi. Udupi has always been a center of pilgrimage since ancient times with two very important temples attracting scores of devotees. These temples- Chandramauleshwara temple and Anantheshwara temple are still there; but the town is now famous for another temple- Srikrishna Math. Along with its religious importance, Udupi’s diverse natural beauty attracts thousands of visitors. Lovely beaches, rivers, backwaters, and forests make fore a relaxed few days. The amalgamation of cultural importance and natural beauty makes Udupi such an amazing place to explore!. Visiting the famous beaches like malpa beach, delta point or may that be Malpe Sea-walkway,Kemmannu hanging bridge, Hoode beach, all has its own story. And finally Mangalore though not much explored. Overall a great journey.

Our Coastal Karnataka Road Trip

Since time immemorable we wanted to do a coastal Karnataka road trip. Driving through the beautiful, pristine, unexplored and lesser known beaches of Coastal Karnataka. Since the beginning of this year, we planned twice for this trip. And both the times we had to cancel. The first time was in January when we rather ended up in Goa once again, exploring Arambol beach Goa , experiencing the Artjuna Cafe at the Anjuna Beach Goa and our first time stay in an airbnb in India . Later, in June end, we again planned to do a coastal Karnataka road trip. We even booked our hotels. But then, due to heavy downpours, we had to cancel the plan last moment and instead had a trip to Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole .

Finally, in the middle of August, during the independence day weekend, we made a vert impromptu plan to take up the coastal Karnataka road trip. As the weather conditions were showing good for the next four to five days. So, in this article, I am going to provide all the details of the coastal Karnataka road trip and how to plan it. When is the best time to visit the places on the Karnataka coast. What to pack, what to do and what to see on a trip to Coastal Karnataka. Without delay, lets get started.

Places to visit on the coast of Karnataka

Karnataka has one of the longest coastlines among the states of India. It is full of hidden unexplored beaches and beautiful islands. Here are some of the prime places to explore on a coastal Karnataka road trip at a glance. I will further elaborate about some of these in my future posts.

Mangalore – the buzzing industrial hub & prime port town of Karnataka
Udupi – Best known for it’s Sri Krishna Math & several other temples, along with some of the best beaches
St. Mary’s Islands – A set of 4 islands off the coast of Udupi that are best known for their basaltic rock formation
Murudeshwara – Known for the third largest statue of Shiva in the world, and a beautiful temple besides it, surrounded by sea on all 3 sides along with a beautiful turquoise blue water beach
Netrani Island – A beautiful island near Murudeshwara, better known across India for scuba diving courses and certifications offered here.
Marvante – One of the most senere beach drives in India, with the sea on one side and a river on the other.
Gokarna – A quaint historical town famous for it’s Mahabaleshwar Temple (Dakshin Kashi) and several other temples , along with some of the most pristine beaches including the Om Beach and Paradise Beach.
Karwar – Yet another port town at the north coast of Karnataka, with some beautiful islands nearby and.

A perfect coastal Karnataka Trip Itinerary

Also, during our coastal Karnataka road trip, we extended our trip a little bit into Kerala and covered Bekal as well. Bekal is a small town on the north coast of Kerala with some very clean beaches, beautiful backwaters, a couple of historical forts including the majestic Bekal Fort and some beautiful temples. We had a one night staycation in Bekal at the Lalit Bekal Resort and Spa before starting off on our coastal Karnataka road trip. Here’s our complete guide to explore Bekal . You can combine a visit to Bekal along with coastal Karnataka road trip like we did. Or you can just plan a weekend getaway from Bangalore to Bekal as well.

Day 1 & 2 : A Bangalore to Mangalore road trip & Exploring Mangalore

The first day of coastal Karnataka road trip starts with a Bangalore to Mangalore road trip. Although , you can do this whole trip in the reverse order as well. There are several routes to take from Bangalore to Mangalore and back. All of the routes from Bangalore to Mangalore require you to go through a section of ghat road on the western ghats. Some of these include –

Bangalore -> Hassan -> Sakleshpur -> Shiradi Ghat -> Mangalore

We took this route on our way back from Mangalore to Bangalore but were not impressed. Since there is a major highway widening work going on a major stretch from Mangalore to Sakleshpur. And the diversions were bone breaking 🙂 . There is a longer route from Bangalore to Mangalore. Till the expressway work continues it is better to take this route –

Bangalore -> Mysore -> Madikeri -> Mangalore

The above route on Bangalore to Mangalore road trip takes nearly an hour longer. But the road condition is excellent on this route.

There is one more road trip to take from Bangalore to Mangalore via Charmadi Ghat. This is also a very scenic route. But, is very twisty and gets dangerous during heavy rains.

Bangalore -> Belur -> Charmadi Ghat -> Mangalore

Where to stay in Mangalore

We stayed at Hotel Ocean Pearl in the center of Mangalore city. The location was excellent. With all the basic needs nearby. And the highway just 5 minutes drive from the hotel.

There are a lot of comfortable hotels with good reviews in Mangalore. You can browse the complete list of hotels in Mangalore here .

However, there are not many known beach resorts in Mangalore itself. As it is a bigger city, a port and a big industrial hub of Karnataka as well.

Day 3 & 4: Mangalore to Udupi & Exploring Udupi

Udupi is one of the most revered religious places in South India. It is most famous for it’s Sri Krishna Math & temple. There are so many fascinating stories and tales associated with this Math & Temple. That I will dedicate a separate post to it altogether. Apart from this temple, there are several other temples to visit in Udupi, many pristine beaches to cover buzzing with activities and beautiful modern town of Manipal to explore. That a visit to Udupi requires a minimum of 2-3 days.

A road trip from Mangalore to Udupi takes around 1-1.5 hours depending on the traffic. Since the towns of Mangalore and Udupi are located less than 60km apart. On the way from Mangalore to Udupi on NH 66, one can also visit the Surathkal Beach – one of the most beautiful beaches with blue waters on the coast of Karnataka. The road trip from Mangalore to Udupi is very scenic. On the way you will pass over several bridges over the backwaters. And see several places where rivers meet the sea. Not every place is a designated view point or has a dedicated name. Keep your eyes for the beautiful scenes on the way and take pit stops as you go.

Upon arriving in Udupi, better to check-in into your hotel. And then explore some of the beaches in the evening. Reserve the next morning to visit the Sri Krishna Math and Temple. Visit as early in the morning as possible to avoid crowd here. Then spend more time through the day exploring some of the other places in and around Udupi. Udupi is synonym to the best of dosas and idlis that you will find in Karnataka. Try the local rasam, dosa, Bisi belle bath, paysam, murukku, rava dosa and rava upma while here.
Some of the best traditional restaurants to try in Udupi include the woodlands , Mitra Samaj , MTR and Gokula Krishna Veg .
Try the food at the langar organised in the Sri Krishna Math & Visit the Sri Krishna Temple and Math – the most revered religious place and a must visit in Udupi

Udupi has a lot of options to stay. Amongst all the places on this coastal Karnataka road trip, Udupi is one of the most popular. It has some beachside resorts and humble homestays, some properties along the backwaters and river banks and even some top end hotels in Manipal region. Day 5: Udupi to Gokarna via Murudeshwar

After exploring Udupi, head to Gokarna via Murudeshwar. Start as early as possible as it is going to be an action packed day. From Udupi to Murudeshwara is a beautiful drive of a little over 2 hours. That will take you through some winding hills and some beautiful beaches. The views of Western Ghats on this stretch of road trip from Udupi to Murudeshwara is breathtaking.

On the way, stop at the famous Marvante beach with the beach on one side and a river on the other side. One of the most perfect places for a drone shot.

Murudeshwar Temple & Murudeshwara Beach

Once you arrive in Murudeshwara, visit the Murudeshwara Temple. It is a temple particularly famous for it’s Shiva statue on the bank of the sea, which is the third largest Shiva statue in the world. Also, the temple itself is vast and beautiful, constructed on the slope of a hill. The temple is located besides beautiful Murudeshwara beach. So, you can visit the beach as well after visiting the temple. The water color of this part of the sea appeared most beautiful to me among all the beaches that I visited on my coastal Karnataka road trip. It was a beautiful shade of turquoise blue, indigo blue and aqua – something I have only seen in Dhanushkodi or during my trip to the Andaman Islands, particularly at Vijayanagara Beach and in Port Blair.

Near Murudeshwar lies Netrani Island where you can do a course on scuba diving. If you intend for the same, then you should add a day to this trip. And take an overnight halt in Murudeshwar. However, if you don’t then drive further to Gokarna. The drive from Murudeshwara to Gokarna is also very beautiful. Continuing uphill and downhill, with pit stops from where you can get excellent views of the sea from the hill top.

Day 6 & 7 : Gokarna

There’s a plethora of things to do in Gokarna. Since, Gokarna has something for everyone. Religious places, pristine beaches, hills that you can trek to, camping on the beach & water sports! So, 2 days are actually very short to explore Gokarna. Include few more days in your itinerary for Gokarna if you can. Here’s a list of places to see in Gokarna & things to do in Gokarna.

Day 8: Gokarna to Karwar

On your final day in Gokarna you drive from Gokarna to Karwar. The drive from Gokarna to Karwar is very beautiful and scenic. You will drive close to the sea at several places and get glimpses of the sea from across the hilly western ghat terrains. A drive from Gokarna to Karwar takes only a little over 2 hours. Karwar is a perfect combination of historical places, beaches and Islands. Once you reach Karwar, some of the best things to do and places to see in Karwar would be :

Hop through many of the beautiful beaches of Karwar

Kurumgad Island : Visit during sunset. It is a beautiful tortoise shaped Island that also has the famous Narasmiha temple. And sunset views that you get from here are mesmerising.
Sadashivgadh Fort : Amongst the many forts on the west coast of India, this is the one you can visit in Karwar. It is located near the Kali River and is built on a hill top.

Nagnath Temple and Narashimha Temple : for religious and tranquil experience

Day 9: Karwar to Bangalore road trip

Finally we arrive at the end of our trip. Today, post breakfast, you can proceed from Karwar back to Bangalore. It will be good to start early today as the distance from Karwar to Goa will take around 10 hours to complete.

Bonus Places to add to your coastal Karnataka Road Trip

There are a few other places to add to your coastal Karnataka Road Trip if you have more time at hand. Some of these include –

Bekal and Kannur

Two sleepy coastal towns of Kerala – Bekal and Kannur are very near to Mangalore. Bekal is located just ~60km south of Mangalore. And Kannur is further ~50km south of Bekal. Both of these places have old churches, forts, beautiful sea beaches and some wonderful resorts for a perfect staycation away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Kannur even has India’s one and only drive in beach. Where you can actually drive your vehicle on the beach, through the waves.

Shimoga and Jog Falls

Jog Falls are one of most majestic waterfalls of India. They are located just 2 hrs drive from Udupi and hardly 1 hour drive from Murudeshwara. You can include them in your road trip to Coastal Karnataka.

Shimoga is one of the most green and beautiful fairy tale towns in Karnataka. It has a lot to offer to it’s visitors in terms of unexplored trekking routes, wildlife safari, Jog falls, beautiful green meadows and mystic weather almost all through the year. If you can, I will highly recommend adding Shimoga to your coastal Karnataka road trip.

What is the best time to do a coastal Karnataka road trip

Winter season from November to February is considered the peak season to visit coastal Karnataka. Although the temperature here is warm and humidity is high all through the year. It is more bearable and pleasant in the winter months. However, the winter months also see a lot of crowd. We visited coastal Karnataka during the monsoon season. As a result, we encountered much less crowd. And got our accommodation at much lower rates. Having said that, you must keep a tab on the weather if you also want to visit off-season during the monsoons. Since, sometimes it rains heavily in this region. And the downpours make it almost impossible to visit places. Also, places like St. Mary’s Island are off limit until september due to the rains.

So, I will say, winter season is the best to do a coastal Karnataka road trip. And the dry spells during the monsoons are the second best. Temperature usually hovers around 30-32 degrees for the most part. Only in peak summer season of April and May it goes beyond 35 degrees and this time is really very uncomfortable to visit here.

What to pack for a coastal Karnataka road trip

Generally, anything that you would pack for a coastal trip to a tropical place. But, since the coastal Karnataka road trip also involves visiting a lot of religious places, you should include some traditional wear as well in your list of things to pack. Here’s a crisp list of things I packed for my coastal Karnataka road trip. You can improvise on it. Hats & Umbrellas to protect from both sun and rain

Itinerary Details

Welcome to Bengaluru! Upon your arrival, our local representative will greet you and transfer you to the hotel. Once you reach, check in and relax.

Start your Coastal Karnataka Tour by visiting the lovely Cubbon Park. Spread over an area of 300 acres, this is an ideal destination for you to visit if you are a nature lover.

After that, visit the Vidhana Soudha, the government edifice that houses the State Legislature and the Secretariat of Karnataka. It is also popularly known as the ‘Taj Mahal of South India’ because of its Neo Dravidian style.

Later in the evening, visit The Bull Temple which is one of the oldest temples in Bengaluru dedicated to ‘vahana’ of Lord Shiva, Nandi the bull.

Return back to the hotel for your overnight stay.

Begin day 2 of your Coastal Karnataka Tour with a scrumptious breakfast and check out of the hotel. Today, we would be driving to Hassan (160 kms. / 3 hours). En-route we will visit Sravanabelagola.

Sravanabelagola is well-known for its collection of Jain temples and sees a lot of devotees from all over the countries. The Gommateshvara Bahubali statue is a significant pilgrimage spot for Jains. At 58 feet, and carved from a single block of granite, this monolith statue is the tallest stone statue in the world.

After your darshan, continue your journey and reach Hassan. As soon as you reach, check into the hotel and settle in.

Start your day with a healthy breakfast and then check out of the hotel. Today, on our Coastal Karnataka Tour we would be driving to Mangalore (180 kms. / 3.5 hours). En-route we will take halts at Kukke Subrahmanya and Dharmsthala. Visit the famous temples of Subrahmanya and Lord Manjunathaswamy and offer your prayers.

Continue with your journey and reach Mangalore. As soon as you reach, transfer to the hotel, check-in and relax. After you freshen up, set out to visit the ancient temples like Kadri Manjunatha Temple, Mangaladevi Temple, and the very famous Gokarananatheshwara Temple.

In the evening, head to the Tannerbhavi beach to enjoy some relaxing time with your family after a hectic day of darshans. Let the calm of the waves on your feet and the soothing sound of the waters let you drift into a trance.

Head back to the hotel for your overnight stay.

Begin your day with an early breakfast and check out of the hotel. Make your way to Udupi and en-route make pit-stops at Horanadu, and Sringeri.

Visit the temple of Goddess Annapoorneshwari in Horanadu. The legends say that devotees praying at this temple never go hungry ever again.

Post your darshan, head towards the Kudremukh National Park located at Chikmagalur town. Here, you can come across a wide variety of species including spotted deer, giant flying squirrel, barking deer, samba, and a lot more.

Then, seek blessings of the divine at Sri Sharadamba Temple on your Coastal Karnataka Tourwhich is said to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya.

Continue your journey and reach Udipi. As you reach, transfer to the hotel and check-in.Enjoy your overnight stay at the hotel.

Begin day 5 of your Coastal Karnataka Tour with a delicious breakfast and check out of the hotel. Make your way towards Gokarna and en-route visit Murudeshwar.

Pay your obeisance to the second-tallest statue of Lord Shiva at the Murudeshwar Temple which is located at the top of the Kanduka Hill. This hill makes for a scenic location as it is surrounded on all the three sides by Arabian sea giving the tourists plenty of opportunities to click photographs.

Continue on your drive and reach Gokarna. As soon as you reach, transfer to the hotel and check-in. You can spend the time in the hotel after a long day or if you wish, you can check out the local attractions nearby.

Post your yummy breakfast, check out of the hotel. On day 6 of your Coastal Karnataka Tour, we would be driving to Hassan (360 kms. / 7 hours). On our way, we will take halts at Jog Falls, Belur, and Halebid.

Jog Falls is one of the most visited attractions in Karnataka which boasts of abundant natural beauty. Also, known as Jogada Gundi and Gersoppa Falls, this is India’s second-highest waterfall, after Nohkalikai Falls of Meghalaya.

Post that, seek blessings of the Almighty at Sri Chennakesava Temple at Belur which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Later on, continue your drive to Hassan. Once you reach, check in to the hotel and relax.

This marks the end of your Coastal Karnataka Tour. Check out of the hotel and transfer to the airport to take your flight back home.

Best Time to Visit:

If you wish to see the waterfalls and trek, then monsoons would be the ideal time for you to visit. Summers can be quite hot and humid because of the close proximity to the sea, hence it is better to not visit Karnataka during summers. October to April is the winter season which is considered the best period to enjoy sightseeing as well as visiting temples.

Temple Etiquettes to Remember:

Make sure you are not dressed inappropriately on your visit to the various temples in Karnataka. Females especially should keep their bodies covered.
People in Karnataka can be quite orthodox. So it is suggested that you maintain an appropriate distance from the opposite gender inside the temple premises.
Photography is banned in many temples in Karnataka. Make sure you know all the rules before you plan to visit them.

Other General Tips:

It is advised you don’t carry too much cash while sightseeing. There are enough ATMs located at regular distances. Additionally, most of the restaurants, shops, and hotels accept cards.
Since driving hours between different cities of Karnataka can get quite overwhelming, it is advised you carry proper medication for motion sickness, if needed.
Never carry your original travel documents while out for local sightseeing or temple darshan. You can keep them locked in the hotel room.

Coastal Karnataka: Day 2(Bekal) Tu Hi Re..

I have been living in Karnataka for almost 4 years now and have traveled a lot on weekend trips near Bangalore. But longer holidays were normally destined for long hauls. This time the plan was to keep it simple, a road trip covering the entire coastal Karnataka till Karwar. So on the eve of Christmas, I finally set off on this most remarkable journey of my life spread over 7 days.

The next leg of the journey took us to Kerala backwaters and beach destination of Bekal. Although not part of Karnataka this was almost at the border and we thought of it to be a good chance to capitalize on seeing the place as we were passing so close to it. It is a small town that has a beautiful sea facing Fort, a unique backwater, and some very clean beaches. A multipurpose destination that is not there is any mainstream tour plan.

Day 2: (Sunday 25th December, Kushalnagar –Bekal, travel time- 4 hours)

Bekal beach

We started after breakfast and took the Madikeri route and wow what a beautiful route it turned out to be. There were places so dense covered with trees that we had to switch on our headlights. Our next destination was Bekal. The credit for finding this place goes to my wife who while browsing found out about this beautiful place where the shooting for Tu Hi Re song was done (remember the fort where Manisha Koirala is running towards Aravind Swami). The place is not found on any tour map maybe because the place has not been promoted well.

There is hardly any hotel here except Taj Vivanta and Lalit who do not cater to Budget travelers. Although not taking anything away we did visit Taj Vivanta and the property location itself makes it worth the bucks along with the service. Bekal beach is within walking distance and that is where we headed.

Inside Bekal Fort

Few words of advice here, though, first as soon as you leave NH and turn towards the Bekal road around 5 KM road is in a very bad state filled with potholes and the driving of buses and autos in the area make things worse if you are driving your own vehicle. Secondly don’t blindly trust google maps here, the routes are not mapped properly and many times we ended up at alleys where there was no further way. So lesson learned is to look for road signs more than your google map.

Sunrise@Bekal Fort

The Fort itself opens at 8:30 am so plan accordingly. We reached early and ended up clicking the picture of a group of youngsters who like us were waiting for the fort to open. Finally, it opened at 8:30 a and we entered the fort walls. Once you enter after going few hundred meter turn right and proceed on till you reach the paved road. If confused don’t forget to ask. As there is no marking inside the fort for this place where the shooting of movie Bombay happened and which is the best place to feel the sea waves kissing the fort wall we ended up wandering around the place fully exhausted in the summer heat.

Shooting Spot

The place itself has been well maintained with lawn and red stones. There used to be an excellent resort called nirvana@bekal which was next to the fort but it seems they have closed for good. Beside fort, there is a famous church nearby but it could be skipped if you don’t have time. This place has a hidden wonder of sorts in terms of being the twin of Kerala Backwaters near Poovar. There are many boat service here that will take you to multiple cruises, the most famous being the Sunset cruise. It’s a beautiful journey amidst all those lush green stretch of trees and water.

Ananthapura Lake temple

We also visited Ananthapura lake temple. Ananthapura Lake Temple in Kasaragod, built in the 9th century, is the only lake temple in Kerala and is the moolasthanam (original abode) of Ananthapadmanabha, the deity of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is reachable only by a bridge. A crocodile at the temple pond said to be 150 years old, is a major attraction.

Myself with my son we had a very comfortable trip ..Pramod and Neelesh really took good care in terms of proper communication of daily schedules , mythologies connected to religious places ,both made us feel as family ..appreciate the way they dealt with difficult terrains , booking challenges for the Safari ..with smiles they responded to all the questions.. Also our driver was very polite and skilled in his driving.. Overall the group was really friendly and we have had good time together.. As everyone is becoming a frequent traveller now, we suggest that you make your own travel accessories kit to ensure a stress free holiday.

Karnataka has a coastline which stretches more than 320kms and so is a home to numerous coastal towns with beautiful beaches and shores making coastal Karnataka a beach paradise. It has numerous port cities, inland waterways and of course, the Western Ghats located just 70 km from the shoreline.

Central Market

Ayurvedic medicines, species, cashew and much more, which are of good quality and available at a very reasonable price. Other than this, visitors can also find it a good place to purchase apparel and other related products.

Panambur Beach

This tiny coastal town is famous for its Krishna Matta (temple). Tourists from near and far make it a must visit when they come towards this coastal town. The university town Manipal is also located 5km from Udupi and is very famous for its institutions. Places you should visit include

Railway Bridge

Located around 5km from Manipal, this bridge where the Konkan railway trains ply is built on the Suvarna river. You get to see the sunset through the river and the town of Manipal on the other end. When the trains go by and you cling on to your life holding the handrails, it is an experience to remember.

Krishna Matta

This temple is located in the heart of the city. The main shrine is surrounded by 8 mattas which houses the priest who performs the prayers. Once in two years, the priest changes and the celebrations go late into the night. The priest keeps rotating within these 8 mattas.

Kundadri Hills

Located around 75 km away from the Udupi, this small hill is ideal for an early morning ride to watch the sunrise behind the hills. There is a small temple located here and many rocky edges to sit and watch the view from above. Not ideal during monsoons though.

Varanga Basadi

This quaint little temple is located about an hour away from Udupi. You can take a bus till Hebri and then change and take another to Varanga. During monsoon when the lake gets filled up you have to use the boat to reach the main temple. They charge around 20-30 Rp for it. It hardly lasts for 3 minutes. You can even get a good pedicure from the fishes at the steps of the temple.

This university town is a complete opposite of the traditional Udupi. Apart from some delicious cafes and restaurants located here amidst beautiful infrastructure this town also has a beautiful lake and few waterfalls which are a must visit for a quaint evening. It is beautiful during the monsoons with green trees and blue skies.

Saint Marys Island

A must visit when in Udupi this island which is accessed by boat rides, has a shoreline of shells. Ther rock formations are magnificent and it is worth visiting. Avoid going during summer noons as it might just get too hot to bear.

This town is famous for its island along with its beaches and hanging bridges. The worth visiting places are

Basavarj Durga

Basavaraja Durga or Basavaraj Island is an island fortress situated in the Arabian sea and can be reached by boat and it is 3.5 km from Honnavar port. The landing place is at the southeastern part of the island at the old entrance of the fort. The island has a total area of 19 hectares. The top of the island is a plateau covered with dry grass and trees that can be seen only at the sloping part of the island. There are a number of freshwater wells. The fort was constructed during Vijayanagar rule in 1690.

This is a collection of Jain temples maintained by ASI. Located within the forest area, you require permission to access these temples. It is ideal for an noon spent in the midst of nature.

Apsarkonda Beach

Located next to a small waterfall and a beautifully developed garden, this beach is ideal for a beautiful sunset view without much hindrance from others. Not many people visit the beach so it can be just yours.

This town is known for INS Kadamba (Sea Bird project), the naval base of Indian navy. It’s also a good getaway for a weekend or a great introduction to the state of Karnataka if coming from the north. Must visit places are

Warship Museum -Is quite a unique visit, which houses war memorabilia. There’s a small entry fee, and they will show you a documentary on the Indian Navy
The Aquarium – Very nicely maintained. Around 30 species of fish in clean aquariums, including piranhas. There’s a large partial skeleton of a blue whale.
Tagore Beach – The Rabindranath Tagore beach is right next to the highway, yet secluded. While it has nothing special, it’s an ideal place to ‘chill’ for a few hours. Clean.
Devbagh Beach – is an auto ride away and is beautiful, clean and partially private in nature. Some of these beaches have water sports activities.
Yana Rocks – a trip to nearby Yana rocks from the beaches can be scintillating.
Anshi National Park – also called Anshi Tiger Reserve is at distance of 51 km. The Sadashivgad Fort is a small while away.

Here is a list of must-visit beaches along the coast

1. Ottinene Beach

Located at a distance of 73km from Udupi, this beach is located along the edge of a hill. We parked our car on top of this hill and walked down the forest to reach the beach. And we turned out to be the only ones at this edge of the beach.

There were people on the other end near the town side but if you walk down the hill and reach the rocky beach, you can witness a pleasant sunset sitting by the rocks or the shore in this beach. Maybe even spot a dolphin or two if lucky.

2. Delta/ Kodi Bengre

Located at just 18km from Udupi, the specialty of this beach is that it is where the river meets the sea. Hence you are at the edge and you get to witness the currents blowing in all directions. It is risky to venture into the waters as you cannot be sure which side the waves are flowing and during high tide, the entire shore gets eaten up by the sea.

Though the shore is limited at the edge it does give you an amazing sunset along with the views of numerous fishermen and catamarans on the way to the beach.

3. Sasihitlu

Located towards Mangalore side of the coast, this beach is not totally off the grid and though you see a lot of visitors to the beach it has a beautiful coast, where again you see the river flow to the sea. It is bigger than Kodi bengre and has a nice green groove of coconut palm trees located along the shore where people can sit for a nice evening picnic watching the sunset.

4. Padukere

Everyone knows the Maple beach near Udupi. Thus it has gotten commercialized with parking fee, WiFi facility, lifeguards and what not. But right next to Malpe is the Padukere beach, which is now connected thanks to the construction of a bridge and people don’t have to rely on a ferry.

You have to pass through the backwaters where you find numerous boats tethered at the Malpe port, which make for a picturesque setting of the sunset. You can see few islands from this beach, watch the sunset behind them and thanks to less footfall even spot a starfish or two.

5. Marvanthe

This beach located near Kundapur is one of the most beautiful beaches you will come across. It has a long shoreline with the beach on one side, a road in between and a river flowing on the other. It is definitely worth a stop.

Temples and Churches

The coastal region is home to many famous temples, churches and Jain temples.

There are 18 Jain Basadis located in this town. It also has the statue of Bahubali erected in 1453 which is a major attraction in this town. Every twelve years, hundreds of thousands of Jain devotees congregate to perform the Mahamastakabhiseka, a ceremony where the statue is bathed and anointed with milk, water, and saffron paste and sprinkled with sandalwood powder, turmeric, and vermilion. An annual Rathotsava is held in February.

2. Moodbidri

Moddbidri or Moodabidri has 18 Jain temples. The most famous among them is the Thousand Pillars temple. Situated in the center of the town, this temple is also called Saavira Kamabada Basadi and Tribhuvana Tilaka Chudamani Basadi. This temple is dedicated to the 8th Theerthankara Chandranatha.

This temple town is considered one of the holiest places in the state. The temple is situated on an islet in the middle of the sacred river Nandini amidst panoramic scenes and fascinating greenery. Thousands of devotees visit Kateel every day to seek blessings from goddess Durga Parameshwari.

4. Saint Lawrence Church

This church constructed in 1759 is located in Karkala and is an epitome of beauty. Placed amidst placid greenery, the Attur-Karkala parish has a rich history. The church oversees a school and an orphanage.

Nightlife Hot Spots

Mangalore and Manipal are the places to be at to enjoy nightlife this coastal area has to offer. Since Manipal is a university town you will find all the places filled with students whereas Mangalore has a working-class crowd so they have a different vibe.

Best Time to Visit Coastal Karnataka

Since the coast experiences hot and humid summers, it is best you avoid it unless you can tolerate heat. Monsoons which happen from June to September are usually in full force with it raining continuously for 4-5 days at a stretch some days. So the best time would be winter,post-monsoon and before summer.

Getting Around

The entire coastline is well connected by a national highway which goes from Kerala in the south to Goa in the north. Within the cities, you have various means including taxis and local buses which connect all parts of the town. Buses are frequently used by the locals so you can ask around for help.

KSRTC buses which are the state government buses run connecting the towns with other major cities in the state.

Where to stay

It has places to suit all budgets, from 5-star hotels to budget hostels. It would be advisable to get homestays where ever you can to experience the authentic household activities and their cuisine. Thier traditional houses usually have a sloping tiled roof with a courtyard in between making it an experience you must have, especially during monsoon.

How safe is Coastal Karnataka

This part of the state is safe when compared to many parts of India. People are very helpful and can communicate in Kannada and English.

The local city buses usually stop running at 8.30 in the night so it is best to return by then from the tourist spots. Towns like Manipal and Mangalore are good to move in the night too, but the other cities and towns might not be advisable.

Departure from Mumbai

Kumta - Murudeshwar (Kumta to Murudeshwar 47 Kms - 1 Hrs.)

Upon arrival at Kumta railway station, we will proceed by Anubhav’s own A.C. mini coach to Murudeshwar, considered the Kanyakumari of Karnataka. Those coming from Pune will arrive directly at Murudeshwar. We will be welcomed by the famous tall Shiva idol which sits right adjacent to our hotel. Night stay at Murudeshwar.

Murudeshwar - Shirali - Murudeshwar

After breakfast, we will visit Mahaganpati and Mahamaya Temple as well as Chitrapur Saraswat Math at Shirali. We will return to Murudeshwar for lunch. After some rest, we will head to Idagunji to see the famous Ganesh temple and the evening can be enjoyed on the Eco beach (20 km) before we head back to the hotel in Murudeshwar.

Murudeshwar - Honnavar - Gokarna Tour - Sirsi

In the morning after breakfast, check out from the hotel and proceed to Sirsi. First, we will head to Gokarna Tour Mahabaleshwar temple on the way. We will reach the Green World Resort for lunch. Dinner and overnight stay in Sirsi.

Sirsi - Rock Utsav (Nov – June) / Jog Falls (July - Oct)

Today we will visit the Rock Utsav. Here, the typical village life in Karnataka is portrayed through rock formations and artistically carved statues. Spread over 40 acres, this is also a proposed sight for India’s first ‘Folk University’. Return to the resort for lunch. Evening, visit Sahasralinga (35 km). This place is surrounded by lush green forest and has 1000 Shivalinga carved in the river bed.

Sirsi – Yana – Sirsi

After breakfast, we will proceed to Yana which has huge structures of Bhasma. These are unusual rock formations, also known for being a holy place of Lord Shiva and is still untouched by regular tourists (Yana is possible only after monsoon). Lunch and rest for some time at the resort. Evening, visit Marikamba Temple (20 km) followed by shopping at Sirsi. Dinner and night stay at Sirsi.

Sirsi – Unchelli Fall – Sirsi

After breakfast, visit Unchelli Fall, one of the biggest tourist attractions near Sirsi. The waterfall has a 116m drop and offers spectacular views at all times of the year (Unchelli Fall is possible after October). Lunch at the resort and in the evening we will visit Banvasi (22 km) an ancient capital of Karnataka called Dakshin Kashi. Here we will see Madhukeshwara Temple, Monolith Asthana Mantapa, and Triloka Mantapa. Dinner and night stay at Sirsi.

Sirsi - Kumta/Hubli

Spend your morning at leisure and after lunch get ready to leave for Kumta station to catch the 12134 MAJN CSMT SF SPL departing at 5.00 p.m. | or for Hubbali station to catch the 17317 UBL DR EXPRESS departing at 3:30 p.m.

Here are some of the most amazing ways to experience the local culture of Coastal Karnataka starting from age-old theater dances to sampling of local cuisine.

Watch a Yakshagana performance

If there is just one thing you can do to experience the culture of Coastal Karnataka, I suggest you go ahead and watch a Yakshagana dance .

A traditional theater form that originated in the west coast of India, especially Karnataka and Kerala, Yakshagana focuses deeply on stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata.

The performers don vibrant costumes and headgears and paint themselves with heavy facial make-up. The troupe dances all night to a beautiful rendition by the Bhagavatha (lead singer) while a set of musical instruments including drums, cymbals, and Maddale keep playing in the background. The atmosphere is nothing short of electric.

Yakshagana was definitely one of the highlights of my recent trip to Karnataka’s exotic coast.

I watched it at the open-air theater of Malpe Beach and I was thrilled to say the least. This is something I would highly recommend you to do when traveling in the region.

Catch a traditional Kambala race

Kambala is a traditional buffalo race that has been practiced for ages in the areas comprising Tulu Nadu – Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannnada, and Kasargod in Kerala.

Two buffaloes are tied to a plough and driven by a jockey across a slushy paddy field. One of the jockeys of our times, Srinivas Gowda , became famous overnight for completing a 145 meter race in just 13.62 secs. Gosh, that was faster than Usain Bolt!

Traditionally, Kambala races were non-competitive. Nowadays, they involve a couple of buffalo pairs running against each other.

It is believed that the race originated 800 years ago as a ritual to please gods for good harvests and freedom from disease.

Today, it is celebrated annually in the farming areas of coastal Karnataka. If you wish to catch a Kambala spectacle, you should visit coastal Karnataka between November and March – the official Kambala season . Check Karnataka Tourism website for schedules .

Witness Bhoota-kola worship ritual

If you have read my article on the culture of Tulu Nadu , you have probably already encountered the ritual of Bhoota kola or Bhootaradhane. Often known by various other names such as Nema, this practice of spirit worship is more than a 1000 years old.

According to local belief, a bhoota is a spirit that takes care of villages and protects them from calamities. These spirits can be those of animals, deified human beings, or characters from Hindu epics.

Bhoota kola is a ritual that celebrates and honors these spirits and pacifies them in case things go wrong.

The ritual usually lasts an entire night where the performer dresses up in a palm leaf skirt, traditional jewelry and applies bright colors on his body and face.

Every performance has a moment when it is believed that the spirit truly enters the body of the performer and answers burning questions posed by the villagers. These moments are sacred. Can be a little scary especially if you have young kids with you.

Unfortunately, Bhoota Kola is pretty low key (usually family/village events) and held only in local temples in rural Coastal Karnataka. If you wish to catch one of these enigmatic performances, check with your local hosts/hotel management and they will usually be able to guide you.

Celebrate Mangaluru Dasara

Mangaluru Dasara is to Mangalore what Durga Puja is to Kolkata and Navratri is to Gujarat. It is a 10-day celebration of the victory of good over evil.

Also referred to as Navarathri Festival or Vijayadashami, Mangaluru Dasara is organized every year by the famous Kudroli Shri Gokarnatheswara Temple . Priests install idols of Goddess Sharada Devi and the Navadurgas. On Vijaya Dashami, a grand procession begins from the temple and ends back there the next day.

10 days of festivities are marked by lighting up of streets, houses, and temples. Devotees throng to Kudroli temple to pay respects. Unique dances such tiger dance, lion dance, and bear dance attract large audiences.

You must have heard of Dasara celebrations in Mysore but barely about the one in Mangalore. And I agree that the rich cultural experiences of Coastal Karnataka are rather lesser-known around the country.

But isn’t that what makes Mangaluru Dasara doubly attractive and a must-see on your next Coastal Karnataka trip ?

Watch Pili Vesha folk dance

Pili Vesha or Pili Yesa or Huli Vesha is a traditional folk dance of coastal Karnataka where performers dress up as tigers. They adorn themselves with tiger masques and paint their bodies to resemble tigers.

There are tales that tell us that Pili Vesha originated in the Udupi district. It continues as a practice to honor Goddess Durga, whose preferred mount is a lion, during Navratri every year.

Mangaluru Dasara is a great place to catch a show of Pili Vesha.

Dig into Mangalorean delicacies

Mangalorean cuisine is delicious and an essential part of Coastal Karnataka culture. If you come to the region and don’t try some ghee roast and gassi, have you really visited at all?

To begin with, there is Chicken Ghee Roast – an iconic dish that is almost synonymous with Mangalorean food. The chicken is slow cooked in a secret masala and oodles of desi ghee (clarified butter). Trying chicken ghee roast at its place of origin – Shetty Lunch Home in Mangalore – is an out-of-the-world experience.

Another staple is a hot and sour fish curry also known as Fish Pulimunchi made from an age-old recipe by the Bunt community of Tulu Nadu . Of course, you cannot miss Kori Gassi, Chicken Sukka, and the very vegetarian Kadale Manoli – all with unique tastes and distinct flavors.

Pair all the above with Neer Dosa or Kottige Kadubu Idli and you have the most sumptuous Mangalorean plate in front of you.

Try Gadbad ice cream at Diana in Udupi

Locals love their ice creams in coastal Karnataka. And why not? In all the heat and humidity of India’s west coast, an ice cream is the only respite sometimes.

The best part about Karnataka’s ice creams is that they are innovative and include local flavors. Some of them have a cult of their own like the Gadbad Ice Cream.

Gadbad in local language means jumbled up. And the ice cream is actually jumbled up with a ton of ingredients. There is ice cream and there are several kinds of fruits, nuts, jelly, and so much more. This jumbled-up fare is something I can eat everyday.

You have to try Gadbad at Diana Restaurant in Udupi where it is believed to have originated. Pabba’s Ice Cream in Mangalore also serves nice Gadbad.

Pay your respects at Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt

Udupi’s Sri Krishna Mutt, often known as the Mathura of South India, is a very holy place for Hindus in the region. It is here that you will find an image of Bala Krishna (baby Krishna) instead of his usual adult version.

An interesting legend tells us that the statue of Bala Krishna arrived in Udupi hidden inside a mound of clay on board a ship from Gujarat. The ship broke down on Malpe Beach and Saint Madhavacharya, the founder of Udupi’s Ashta Matha , discovered the young God. He, then, placed him at the Sri Krishna Mutt.

This temple is considered to be the final resting place of Lord Krishna and holds great religious significance.

Doors of the temple open to devotees every day at 5:30 am. You can catch a glimpse of Bala Krishna from either the Navagraha Window or the Kanakana Window. (There’s another interesting story behind the windows, but that’s a story for another day!)

The temple also offers free lunch and dinner to devotees every day. This is popularly known as Anna Brahma and feeds hundreds. Imagine sitting down in a hall full of believers and soaking in the vibes while trying the simple but delicious temple food. The experience is priceless!

Taste Udupi cuisine at Mitra Samaj

Not very far away from the Shri Krishna Mutt in Udupi is a small, relatively-inconspicuous restaurant called the Mitra Samaj. But don’t be fooled by the appearances. The history and legacy of this place are pretty large.

Established in the 1960s, Mitra Samaj serves its guests authentic Udupi Cuisine. Forget about all the Udupi dosas, vadas, and sambars that you have eaten elsewhere in India. This is where the real deal is.

Udupi cuisine originated in Udupi’s Astha Mathas. With its roots firmly tied to a satwik temple culture, the cuisine revolves around dishes made from grains, vegetables, fruits, and pulses . Local ingredients also play a key role – the reason why you won’t even find tomatoes or cauliflowers among the ingredients.

The vegetarian food at Mitra Samaj is extremely popular. Apparently, the restaurant is the second-most visited place in Udupi after the temple!

If you are looking for an enriching and delicious experience of Coastal Karnataka culture, come and eat at Mitra Samaj. Try their masala dosa, vada sambar, goli bajje along with some filter coffee. Your life won’t be the same again!

Explore the dying Kaavi art

Kaavi art? Have you ever heard of it?

I had never heard of this exotic art form on India’s west coast until I spotted the beautiful red and white murals on the walls of houses that lined the street right behind the Udupi Shri Krishna Temple.

Believed to have originated in the Konkan coast of Goa in the 16th century and then spread to the coast of Karnataka, Kaavi art or Kaavi Kale usually adorns the walls of temples and homes. And sometimes even churches.

The red color comes from red laterite soil while the white is created using seashells, sand and jaggery. Nature and folk symbols are common themes around which the murals are done. Kaavi art is simple, yet represents so much of local culture and emotions.

Visit a Jain Basadi

On my recent trip to Karnataka’s vibrant coast, it was amazing to dig into the Jain history of Karnataka.

I clearly had no clue Jainism had spread so far and wide in the state under the patronage of Hoysala, Kadamba, and Chalukya dynasties. In fact, I remember climbing all those steps to reach the Gommateshwara statue in Shravanbelagola when I was a kid. But I hadn’t thought much about it then. Now, equipped with the power of Google, I dug in.

There are an amazing number of Jain monuments that you can visit in Northern & Coastal Karnataka. They are known as the Jain Basadis and are almost always unique.

Take the case of the 1000-pillar temple in Moodbidri, the 57-feet tall statue at Shravanbelagola, the rock-cut cave temples of Badami , or the picturesque Jain Basadi of Varanga. Each of them has a special story to tell that you would love listening to.

Experience local life in a fishing village

When in Coastal Karnataka, you cannot really miss fish . And I mean not just in your delicious food platters but also in the lives of people here.

Thousands of traditional fishermen call the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada their home. Every morning they go out into the seas, lay their nets, and come back with fresh catch.

Mogaveeras are a community that exclusively practiced fishing in the olden days. They practiced traditional forms of fishing known as Kairampani and Rampani along the coast. While Rampani has become extinct, Kairampani is still practiced in many regions.

Even today, you can catch these fishermen going about their daily lives at the Malpe port, Tadadi port, or at the Devbagh Beach .

Early morning, proceed to Gokarna. Upon arrival, check-in to the hotel and proceed for Gokarna local sightseeing.

Visit Om beach. Om Beach got its name from the “Om” shape the shore takes as seen from a bird’s eye view. Later visit Half-moon beach, Paradise beach & lighthouse. If you have time, complete the entire circuit on foot. Watching Sunset at Gokarna is mesmerizing. Overnight stay at Gokarna hotel.

Early morning, after breakfast, proceed to visit Gokarna local sightseeing places: Mahabaleshwara Swamy Temple & Ganesha Temples, Gokarna Beach, Mirjan Fort, Kudle Beach. Coastal Karnataka - A 4 day itinerary #TM2021

4 days,2 of us, 1 car.. thus was our exploration of the lesser known beaches and backwaters of coastal karnataka. **the route -** bangalore - karwar - byndoor - bangalore. there aren't many resorts to choose from to stay along the beach (we were particular about a beach resort). we hence chose resorts in karwar and byndoor as our rest spots and it was a great decision. it was also optimally located for day trips alongthe coast touching gokarna and udupi and also for our return trip to bangalore. **day 0 -** bangalore to karwar is a 9 hr drive and we wanted to break that up. unable to take an additional day off work, we decided to work from chitradurga for a day chitradurga is about 3hrs from bangalore and we started early on a friday morning before the workday started kstdc has a very humble, clean and great place to work from (good wifi) and spend the night on a budget, overlooking the fort. **day 1 - karwar and devbagh beach resort** saturday morning began with checking out of chitradurga and hitting the road, bidding farewell to all the windmills along the way. karwar is the last beach on the karnataka coastline and is a very important naval base for india. there is a completely different charm as you step into the uttara kannada district and it amazes me how our country's landscapes, languages and food change every 100kms. located at the mouth of the kali river, karwar used to be a major port during british rule for spice trading. it is this place where rabindranath tagore wrote his masterpiece prakitirir pratishoota, his foray into the literary space. [](https://static2.tripoto.com/media/filter/tst/gen/1799701/tripdocument/1640871010_img_7482.jpg)devbagh beachin karwar we chose to stay on the devbagh beach - run by the jungle lodges and resorts (jlr; govt. run), this beach resort is located at the estuary where kali river meets the arabian sea. the beach resort is a 20mins boat ride from its karwar office on main land, really well maintained and offers you stay with a delicious food package; since there is nothing else around - just like living on a desert island recommend a one night stay here - getting lost in the coniferous jungles, walking endlessly on the beach, spending the evening playing with the water and listening to the waves as they lap up and enjoying dinner on the beach with a bon-fire. the resort does offer a trek, bird watching or a boat ride into the sea to spot dolphins. we chose the boat ride, to go into the sea but unfortunately didn't see any dolphins. seeing how tourism has been hit, post covid, we have been choosing stay options which are govt. run to help support the local community - devbagh is one of them, managed and supporting the fishermen community nearby. [](https://static2.tripoto.com/media/filter/tst/gen/1799701/tripdocument/1640871012_img_7600.jpg)majali beachgetting off the boat from devbagh at the karwar jetty, we drove towards the goa border to check out majali beach which shares its border with goa. this is a small beach which has a rock formation which you can climb to reach the black sand beach of tilmati. tilmati can alternately be reached from the goa side as well. *mirjan fort -* post this quick pitstop we headed back towards the south of the coastline as we climbed the mountain towards gokarna. if you are visiting here for the first time, would recommend a stop over at the famous beaches of gokarna, kumta, and the rock formations of yana. you can stay at any of the beach resorts at gokarna too. we had visited gokarna many years ago and hence chose to skip it; but decided to visit the mirjan fort which was en-route. the mirjan fort was built by rani chennabhairadevi in the 16th century and was a major hub for spice trade. in fact she was known as the pepper queen. the sprawling fort is beautiful and offers a great view of the entire green forest cover. the view would be much better in monsoons, given the lush greenery which also grows on and around the fort. we spent some time exploring the fort and i went crazy , like a child running around the open spaces. [](https://static2.tripoto.com/media/filter/tst/gen/1799701/tripdocument/1640871018_img_7837.jpg)*udupi backwaters & kemmanu hanging bridge -* udupi, apart from being a temple town, has two other attractions. one of them is the backwaters. the road to the backwaters is quite narrow and completely lined with thick coconut groves and provides an incredible experience just driving through them. you will notice at most of the backwaters the banks on either side are connected by number of hanging bridges. these bridges are the lifeline of this area, providing a mode of transport to goods and people on either side of the river - some of them so strong that they can withstand bike movements too. we decided to visit the main one which is the kemmanu hanging bridge. the river is also a place for kayaking and you will see the horizon dotted with kayaks. if you would like to kayak, there is a adventure sports place right at the base of the bridge. even if you don't kayak, this is a lovely spot to enjoy the stillness and calmness that nature offers and take in its serene beauty. 4 days,2 of us, 1 car.. thus was our exploration of the lesser known beaches and backwaters of coastal Karnataka.

The Route -

Bangalore - Karwar - Byndoor - Bangalore. There aren't many resorts to choose from to stay along the beach (we were particular about a beach resort). We hence chose resorts in Karwar and Byndoor as our rest spots and it was a great decision. It was also optimally located for day trips alongthe coast touching Gokarna and Udupi and also for our return trip to Bangalore.

Bangalore to Karwar is a 9 hr drive and we wanted to break that up. Unable to take an additional day off work, we decided to work from Chitradurga for a day! Chitradurga is about 3hrs from Bangalore and we started early on a Friday morning before the workday started! KSTDC has a very humble, clean and great place to work from (good wifi) and spend the night on a budget, overlooking the fort.

Day 1 - Karwar and Devbagh Beach Resort

Saturday morning began with checking out of Chitradurga and hitting the road, bidding farewell to all the windmills along the way. Karwar is the last beach on the Karnataka coastline and is a very important Naval base for India. There is a completely different charm as you step into the Uttara Kannada district and it amazes me how our country's landscapes, languages and food change every 100kms. Located at the mouth of the Kali river, Karwar used to be a major port during British rule for spice trading. It is this place where Rabindranath Tagore wrote his masterpiece Prakitirir Pratishoota, his foray into the literary space.

Majali and Tilmati Beach - After spending a day chilling, doing absolutely nothing other than appreciating nature, we checked out and headed towards our next stay destination of Byndoor, which was about a 4hr drive away. You can do a complete road trip from the north to the south of coastal Karnataka and be awed by each and every beach. We chose a few, the ones we haven't visited before.

Mirjan Fort - Post this quick pitstop we headed back towards the south of the coastline as we climbed the mountain towards Gokarna. If you are visiting here for the first time, would recommend a stop over at the famous beaches of Gokarna, Kumta, and the rock formations of Yana. You can stay at any of the beach resorts at Gokarna too. We had visited Gokarna many years ago and hence chose to skip it; but decided to visit the Mirjan Fort which was en-route. The Mirjan Fort was built by Rani Chennabhairadevi in the 16th century and was a major hub for spice trade. In fact she was known as the Pepper Queen. Marvante beach is also starkly different from other beaches with black stones which you can walk across to view the sea.

We then headed to Udupi for lunch. Bharath (The Husband) loves his fish and his main agenda was to head to Thimmappa for their fish meals. Being the vegetarian, I got some lunch nearby and we then headed out to explore Udupi's backwaters.

Thus commenced our return journey to Bangalore. This was a 8-9hr drive and we headed out post breakfast. Agumbe apart from being extremely picturesque and offering some great treks and views, is also the place where the popular '90s show Malgudi Days was shot. Covid has somewhere forced us to re-look at many of the places we had visited through our growing up years - but with a new found interest and perspective. With it forcing us to take smaller trips and closer home, here's to re-discovering our India and all that she has to offer!
