Best Mediterranean cruises in 2024 and 2025

Fran Golden

Editor's Note

The Mediterranean region has it all — amazing food and wine, famous historical and cultural landmarks, scenic seaside towns and gorgeous island beaches.

You'd be hard-pressed to sample Spain , France , Italy and Greece on one land tour without transportation nightmares. A Mediterranean cruise, however, is the perfect way to get a taste of many coastal countries with ease as you transit between destinations while you sleep aboard your ship.

Whether they operate tiny ships with a few hundred passengers or giant megaships with several thousand people, most cruise lines have vessels summering in the Mediterranean. Some even sail the region year-round.

Most Mediterranean cruises focus on one region (usually the eastern or western halves of the coastline), but longer itineraries might encompass more. While choosing a ship is important, so is picking which route to take and which countries you want to see.

Consider what's on your bucket list. Cruise lines offer a variety of options, making it possible for culture vultures, beach lovers, history buffs and family travelers to prioritize different ports of call and onboard amenities.

Here are some of the best Mediterranean cruises departing in 2024 and 2025 to whet your appetite for a European adventure by sea.

Best cruise for romantics: Windstar Cruises in the rivieras

cruise mediterranean february 2024

For romance seekers, few experiences beat a cruise that lingers along the French and Italian rivieras. France's Cote d'Azur, with its coastal mountains and crystal blue sea, has inspired artists and romantics for centuries. The equally stunning Italian coast is perfect for romantic strolls around secluded harbors or an indulgent, delectable lunch at a table for two overlooking the ocean.

Another popular port of call on Riviera itineraries is Monaco, where you might visit the royal palace of the Grimaldi family and stop by the glamorous Monte Carlo Casino to pretend you are James Bond enjoying a night on the town.

Related: Western Mediterranean vs. Eastern Mediterranean cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

You'll find these cruises on small and luxury ships, but our pick for romance is Windstar Cruises ' seven-night "Yachtsman's Harbors of the Rivieras" sailing between Rome and Barcelona (or vice versa) on multiple spring, summer and fall dates in 2024 and 2025.

The five-masted Wind Surf is as picture-perfect as the ports you'll visit, and the 342-passenger ship can follow all the luxury yachts into smaller harbors and off-the-beaten-track destinations. Your onboard meals, with many dishes created by James Beard-affiliated chefs, might even rival the fresh Mediterranean cuisine you'll find in port.

Ports of call vary by sailing date but can include Port-Vendres, Sanary-sur-Mer and Cannes, France; Monte Carlo, Monaco; and Portofino and Portoferraio, Italy. For the ultimate Riviera experience, book one of Windstar's Prix du Monde sailings with exclusive access to the Formula One racing events.

Best cruise for budget-conscious travelers: Celestyal Cruises in the Greek isles

cruise mediterranean february 2024

Visiting the Greek islands is a magical experience. Lessons in ancient history and the development of Western civilization come to life surrounded by astounding natural beauty.

Your jaw might drop as your ship navigates the sunken caldera that leads to Santorini, where whitewashed villages dot the tops of steep cliffs. In Mykonos, you can head to one of the island's famous beaches or catch a ferry to explore the ancient ruins of Delos, known as the birthplace of Apollo. Budget-conscious travelers can skip the tours and stroll the narrow streets and city walls of the Old Town of Rhodes.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruise tips to enhance your European vacation

For less pricey ways to see the Greek isles, consider Celestyal Cruises , which sails three- and four-night mini-cruises in addition to affordable one-week sailings. A four-night cruise packs a lot into a short sailing with visits to Mykonos, Patmos, Rhodes, Heraklion and Santorini, as well as Kusadasi, Turkey. Don't forget to spend time in Athens, Greece, before or after your cruise.

Celestyal's two ships carry between 1,200 and 1,700 passengers, so you'll enjoy all the amenities of a large cruise ship — such as multiple pools, restaurants and bars, and spa and fitness facilities — without feeling inundated with many thousands of fellow cruisers.

Best cruise for history lovers: Viking in the Eastern Mediterranean

cruise mediterranean february 2024

Eastern Mediterranean cruises of a week or more immerse you in multiple ancient civilizations and take you to the historical places you have traveled to see, including several UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Extraordinary itineraries visit Athens for the Acropolis; Istanbul for the Blue Mosque and the Topkapi Palace; and Kusadasi for the impressive ancient city of Ephesus and sites associated with the Virgin Mary. In Dubrovnik, Croatia's medieval Old Town (a filming location for HBO's "Game of Thrones") will wow you; from Naples, Italy, you can explore the ancient city of Pompeii.

Cruises that start or end in Rome will treat you to such sights as the Roman Colosseum and the Vatican.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruise shore excursions

True history lovers will not be satisfied with only a week in this rich landscape. Choose Viking for your Eastern Mediterranean cruise, and look for longer itineraries, such as the 15-day "Ancient Mediterranean Antiquities" sailings throughout 2024. The one-way sailing between Rome and Istanbul hits most of the ancient civilization highlights: Naples and Sicily, Italy; Rhodes, Crete and Athens, Greece; and Ephesus, Troy and Istanbul, Turkey.

Viking also offers complimentary shore excursions in every port, so you'll have access to knowledgeable guides who can explain the historical sites you're touring. On board, you'll find a comfortable home base on Viking's 930-passenger identical ships, with multiple included dining venues, inviting lounges done in Scandinavian-inspired decor and comfortable cabins with thoughtful details, such as quiet-closing drawers and heated bathroom floors.

Best cruise for explorers: Celebrity Cruises in the Holy Land

cruise mediterranean february 2024

Travelers who really want to double down on the ancient civilizations should look for longer Eastern Mediterranean cruises that combine Greece, Turkey and Italy with port calls in Egypt, Jordan and Israel. Depending on the specific Holy Land itinerary, you might see Cairo and the pyramids of Giza, Jordan's ancient rose-hewed rock city of Petra and biblical locations in and around Jerusalem.

Celebrity Cruises is a terrific choice for your Holy Land cruise, as the company offers 10- and 11-night Egypt and Israel sailings. For example, a 10-night, round-trip Athens cruise visits Haifa and Ashdod, Israel (for Jerusalem) and Alexandria, Egypt, with overnights in each port except Haifa. The extra time in port allows for overnight tours, so you can venture farther into each country to see all the key sites. The 11-night version adds a stop in Kusadasi, Turkey, for a visit to Ephesus.

Celebrity's ships are known for their foodie culture, with multiple specialty restaurants, as well as a happening bar scene. (Do not miss the martini flights.) With a range of rooms, from windowless inside cabins to comfortable suites, you can tour the Holy Land at any price point.

Best cruise for culture vultures: Norwegian Cruise Line in the Western Mediterranean

cruise mediterranean february 2024

For foodies, fashionistas and art lovers, it's hard to top a Western Mediterranean cruise to the renowned resort towns and famed coastal cities of Italy, France, Monaco and Spain.

This is your opportunity to see Antoni Gaudi's fantastical Sagrada Familia church and other creations in Barcelona; visit Michelangelo's David sculpture and other Renaissance treasures in Florence, Italy; hang out at the casino in Monte Carlo; and stop in dreamy Nice, France, for its Matisse and Chagall museums.

You can shop for Italian, French and Spanish designer fashion when you're not dining on the best Italian pasta and gelato you've ever tasted — or bouillabaisse and escargot in France, or paella and tapas in Spain. All are accompanied by local wines, of course.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a variety of Western Mediterranean cruises to key ports in Spain, Italy and France. The line's newest ship, Norwegian Viva, sails the Med in the spring, summer and fall of 2024 and 2025. Its nine- to 11-night cruises call on a variety of major ports. For example, an 11-night cruise on select dates in 2024 sails from Rome to Lisbon, Portugal, and visits Livorno, Italy (for Florence and Pisa); Villefranche-sur-Mer (for Nice and Monaco) and Marseille, France; Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Motril and Cadiz, Spain (for Seville); and Gibraltar in the United Kingdom.

It's a shame that the itinerary has no sea days because the ship offers plenty to keep cruisers busy on board. There's a wealth of dining options, from the Italian cuisine-serving Onda by Scarpetta to a trendy food hall, plus a go-kart track, multistory twisty slides and a bar serving sustainable craft cocktails.

Best cruise for families: Royal Caribbean in the Mediterranean

cruise mediterranean february 2024

When looking at a cruise with children , you'll want to mix time exploring on land with playtime on the ship, whether in the kids club or with attractions like video arcades and waterslides. Look for an itinerary that includes one or more fun-filled days at sea.

Kids will enjoy such sights as the Roman Colosseum, where they might pretend that they are gladiators; the flower market in Nice, France; and the Leaning Tower of Pisa (on a shore excursion from Livorno, Italy). Take them to the beach in the Greek Isles, and eat pizza in Naples, Italy. If you can find a cruise that includes the Italian seaside villages of Cinque Terre (accessible from Genoa, Livorno and Portofino), fans of Disney's animated feature "Luca" will be ecstatic.

Family favorite Royal Caribbean has a variety of ships and itineraries sailing around Europe, but a top option is a seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise aboard Oasis of the Seas. The round-trip itinerary departs from Rome. Additional ports of call include Naples and La Spezia, Italy (for Florence); Palma de Mallorca, Spain; and Marseille, France. Sailings depart beginning May 2024.

Family-friendly entertainment on board is plentiful. On sea days, you'll have access to three main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course and even a zip line.

The hottest Mediterranean cruises for summer 2024

Listing the hottest Mediterranean Cruises for summer 2024

If you’re looking for an unforgettable family vacation, a Mediterranean cruise is an excellent choice. These affordable cruises offer the opportunity to visit multiple destinations while enjoying luxurious amenities on board.

The Mediterranean is divided into two regions, the Western and Eastern Mediterranean. Each region offers a variety of cruise itineraries to choose from. A Western Mediterranean cruise will take you to popular ports such as Barcelona and Valencia in Spain, Rome and Naples in Italy, or Marseille and Cannes in France. On the other hand, an Eastern Mediterranean cruise will take you to stunning gems like Venice in Italy or Athens and the breathtaking islands of Santorini and Mykonos in Greece.

With so many itineraries and cruise lines to choose from, finding the perfect cruise adventure can be overwhelming. That’s where we come in. Our suggestions will inspire you to find the perfect cruise that meets your needs, and exceeds your expectations.

Quick navigation

Book early for the best deals, then monitor your cruise price

Embarking on a dream vacation to explore ancient towns like Athens in Greece, the sun-soaked coastline of Croatia, or charming Italian villages is an experience of a lifetime. To ensure you don’t miss out on these popular itineraries, booking your cruise early is best as they tend to fill up quickly.

Even if you’ve already booked your cruise, saving money is still possible. You can track your cruise fare and contact the cruise line to take advantage of any price decreases. By doing so, you can ensure that you get the best deal possible and make the most of your dream vacation.

Several popular cruise lines offer outstanding itineraries as you plan your Mediterranean cruise for summer 2024.

MSC Cruises offers some of the best prices for Mediterranean cruises, starting at just $119 for cruises from Marseille, $299 from Athens-Piraeus, and $189 from Palma de Mallorca. However, we recommend choosing one of their newest cruise ships for the best possible cruise experience.

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises are two of the most popular family cruise lines, offering something for every type of traveler in their 2024/2025 cruise season. While they may be pricier than MSC Cruises, the entertainment and dining options on board are among the best among large cruise lines at sea.

Planning and Booking Mediterranean Cruises

Choosing the right cruise.

When planning your Mediterranean cruise for summer 2024, it’s crucial to consider your preferences and interests. With numerous cruise lines offering unique itineraries and amenities, take your time to research and find the one that suits you best.

A luxury or ultra-luxury cruise line may be the perfect option if you prefer to get away from large cruise ships and crowds. Oceania Cruises is an excellent example of a luxury cruise line offering new Mediterranean itineraries in 2024 that focus on immersive experiences in the region.

When choosing the right cruise, consider the following points:

  • Destinations and ports of call
  • Cruise duration
  • Ship size and amenities
  • Onboard activities and excursions

By considering these factors, you can ensure that you choose the perfect Mediterranean cruise that caters to your preferences and interests.

Cruise Discounts

Everyone loves a good deal, and cruising is no exception. Don’t be afraid to hunt for special offers and discounts when looking for your perfect Mediterranean cruise. Here are a few tips to help you save some money while planning your dream voyage:

  • Book Early:  Cruise lines tend to offer the best deals when itineraries are first released. Booking 6-12 months ahead will often result in a better price.
  • Travel During Shoulder Seasons:  Spring and autumn tend to be less crowded, and cruise lines may offer more attractive pricing.
  • Utilize Loyalty Programs:  Returning customers may have access to exclusive discounts through loyalty programs offered by cruise lines.
  • Look for Last-Minute Deals : Cruise lines often discount unsold cabins as the departure date approaches. Be flexible with your travel dates, and watch for these cruise deals .

Now that you better understand choosing the right cruise and finding cruise discounts, you are one step closer to enjoying a fantastic Mediterranean cruise in the summer of 2024. Remember, thoroughly researching and booking early will ensure you have the best possible experience.

Shore Excursions

Popular shore tours.

Some of the best experiences during your Mediterranean cruise will be getting off the ship and exploring incredible destinations. You don’t have to book a ship shore excursion. If you still want a knowledgeable guide but joining a tour bus in a large group is not your style, consider booking an independent shore excursion with a trusted external supplier. We love the tours offered by Viator , ToursByLocals, and Italytours.EU and some of our most memorable trips have been booked with these suppliers.

Independent Sightseeing

Consider independent sightseeing during your Mediterranean cruise if you prefer a more leisurely exploration. With several ports filled with diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes, you can easily rent a bike, do your own walking tour, or take public transportation to experience each location at your own pace.

Check out our “Essential Guide” series and itinerary ideas about how to make the most of your time in the most popular port cities. We offer detailed itineraries, including must-see sights, transport and cruise port tips, and more. Click on our “ Essential Guide ” section and find the port you are most interested in.

Packing and Travel Tips

What to pack.

When preparing for your Mediterranean cruise in the summer of 2024, it’s important to pack smartly to enjoy your vacation fully. Here are some essential items to include in your luggage:

  • Clothes : Pack light, comfortable clothes suitable for warm weather, like T-shirts, shorts, and dresses. Bring a few swimwear sets, as you’ll likely spend time by the pool or at the beach. For evenings, pack some dressier outfits for dinners and events onboard. Don’t forget a lightweight sweater or jacket for cooler nights or visiting places with strict dress codes, such as churches or historic sites.
  • Footwear : Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as you’ll likely be exploring various ports and taking shore excursions. Pack swimming shoes or flip-flops for around the pool and on the beach, and your favorite shoes for evening events.
  • Accessories : Bring a sun hat, sunglasses, and a light scarf to protect yourself from the sun. Consider bringing a small backpack or tote bag for carrying your essentials while you’re off the ship.
  • Toiletries : Travel-sized sunscreen is crucial, along with your regular toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. You may also want to pack a small bottle of bug spray.
  • Electronics : Your portable phone charger, a camera, and any necessary chargers for your devices. Additionally, pack a cruise-compliant power strip , especially if you are many in a cabin and all need to use power points simultaneously!
  • Essentials : Don’t forget to pack your necessary medications, a copy of your passport, travel insurance documents, and a credit card for emergencies.
  • Extras : A small, lightweight umbrella or raincoat can be handy, as sudden showers might occur in the Mediterranean region.

By packing with these tips in mind, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy your Mediterranean cruise. Just remember to pack light and focus on the essentials, so you can fully embrace the Mediterranean lifestyle during your vacation. Click here for a complete and more detailed packing guide.

The Western Mediterranean and the Adriatic

Cradles of Creativity

Packed with spectacular age-old landmarks and grand architecture, history comes thick and fast in the Western Med and the Adriatic. Journeying through Italy, wonder at the Colosseum and Pantheon - ancient reminders of Rome’s time as world’s largest empire - and wander Pompeii’s ruins, frozen-in-time after Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79AD. Against the bold blues and powder-white sands of the Adriatic, admire Slovenia’s Venetian-influenced buildings, the 4th-century pizazz of Split’s Diocletian's Palace, Dubrovnik’s dramatic Old Town, and Montenegro’s mighty forts. Whether genning up on the Knights of Malta in Valletta, discovering Napoleon’s childhood in Corsica, cruising along the French Riviera to Mallorca - where Arab and Balearic influences meet - or reveling in Gaudi’s masterpieces in Barcelona, you’ll be enthralled by history at every stop on this story-filled vacation.

Nice, France

The legacy of the Renaissance - a cultural movement borne in 14th-century Italy, which spread throughout Europe shaping intellectual life, art, architecture and the arts can be seen in abundance as you travel through the region’s most extraordinary cities. Discover the mind-blowing art of the Renaissance masters at Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice and Rome’s Galleria Borghese, a 17th-century villa which houses art, sculptures and antiquities. See first-hand why Michelangelo’s dreamy ceiling frescoes at the Sistine Chapel, and the famed corridors of Florentine mega-museum The Uffizzi deserve a spot on every art-lover’s bucket list. Just as compelling are Kotor’s Maritime Museum, which reveals the area’s fascinating seafaring history, and Malta’s National Museum of Archeology, which houses masses of prehistoric art and Neolithic pottery. Altogether more contemporary, is Cannes, renowned for its glamorous film festival.

A warm climate, fertile landscapes and teeming waters make for a rather delicious roll call as you sail through the Adriatic and the Western Mediterranean. Live La Dolce Vita - or sweet life - in Italy, where cafe culture reigns, and staples include fresh pasta, pizza, gelato , and lashings of olive oil and wine. Try pillowy-soft burrata cheese in Puglia, Sicilian eggplant and ricotta signature pasta alla norma , and classic Neopolitan-style Margherita pizza in its birthplace, Naples. Seafood’s a real Adriatic superstar; don’t miss Slovenian seafood rizota (risotto) - with a glass of local white rebula wine - and Dalmatian pašticada (beef stew) and rožata custard pudding in Croatia. Corsica’s signature civet de sanglier offers heartiness aplenty, while socca (chickpea pancakes) are a French Rivieran favorite, Marseille’s seafood bouillabaisse packs a liquorice-y kick thanks to fennel and  pastis , while Barcelona excels at seafood paella and crema catalana , a Catalan take on creme brûlée.

Alongside a serious hit of history and culture, awaken your senses exploring the region’s sun-soaked beaches, crystal-clear bays and breathtaking volcanic, forested landscapes. Take invigorating dips in Bari’s bays or sun yourself on Torre Sant’Andrea whilst admiring its dramatic sea stacks. Dubrovnik’s an adventure junkie’s dream; try cliff diving, kayaking, or scuba dive to see the Taranto wreck, and its quirky submerged tractors. Get your heart rate going hiking in Portofino Regional Park’s lush network of trails, and wonder at Mount Etna’s volcanic vineyards and lava pits in Sicily. For more natural thrills, travel to Corsica’s Scandola Nature Reserve to spot eagles soaring over stunning rock formations, or discover the Cuevas del Drach - Mallorca’s dragon caves - an underground lair full of limestone stalactites and stalagmites.

A rip-roaring journey packed with exhilarating through-the-ages adventures, the Ultimate Middle East & Med segment is a vacation that cannot fail to set your imagination on fire. Whizz up Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world for unrivalled city views, be moved as the history of age-old civilizations - of the Nabateans, the Pharaohs and Ancient Greeks and Romans - comes to life before your very eyes in pink-hued Petra, the wild Egyptian desert, dominated by the Pyramids of Giza, and Rome’s Colosseum and Athens’ Acropolis. Along the way you’ll connect with religious heartlands and sacred shrines, revel in Renaissance art and regal architecture and enjoy relaxing at a multitude of sun-kissed beaches, taking blissful dips in transformative turquoise waters.

When visiting religious sites such as churches, mosques or synagogues, dress modestly, particularly in the Middle East. Opt for long sleeves, and keep your shoulders, back and legs covered. A lightweight scarf or sarong can come in handy as a makeshift headscarf or coverup, which can be easily thrown on at the last minute if it’s unexpectedly required.

Sprawling ancient marvels and Europe’s cobblestone-lined, often narrow city streets are best explored on foot. To ensure you make the most of things, pack a well-worn-in pair of comfortable shoes, and some trusty blister plasters, just in case.

Temperatures in the Middle East and the Med can really soar, plus there’s plenty of time spent on beaches and in the desert on this segment, so invest in a decent wide-brimmed hat, eco-friendly sunscreen, and keep a refillable bottle of water with you as you explore.

Why costa cruises are so cheap.

Costa Cruises vessels are a common sight at Mediterranean ports.

Embarking on a cruise vacation doesn't have to break the bank. Although traditionally seen as an extravagant choice, cruising today is known just as much for its family-friendly and bargain deals.

Among the mainstream cruise lines, Costa Cruises is known for keeping its base fares as low as possible. While rarely the final price you pay, the advertised rates are a tempting prospect.

At the time of publication, Costa’s ‘Easter sale’ features various 7-night European itineraries from under $450 per person, based on two sharing a cabin in November 2024.

Known for its European onboard experience, Costa Cruises has become a popular choice among budget travelers and families seeking to explore the world—and especially the Mediterranean cruising region —without splashing too much cash. But the line isn’t for everyone, especially those used to a more all-inclusive cruising experience.

From its back-to-basics business model to the efficiencies of being part of the Carnival Corporation, this is how Costa manages to keep its prices so low, and what you can expect on board.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, flexible itineraries.

One of the biggest differences offered by Costa Cruises and fellow Italian line MSC Cruises is their approach to itinerary planning.

Typically, cruise lines base their ship in a port for a season, and offer varied itineraries throughout that season. Costa, however, runs its ships the same looped itinerary throughout a season, especially in the Mediterranean region, and allows embarkation and disembarkation at different ports.

Costa Cruises ships share the same basic design as many other lines in the Carnival Corporation.

This increases the flexibility for guests when booking, and allows Costa to offer specific segments or itineraries at lower prices in order to fill its ships throughout the season.

Although this practice does help keep ships busy and fares low, it also results in hectic mornings and constant announcements in every port aimed at new arrivals, which can become tiresome after several days.

One area of the Costa experience often criticized on forums such as Cruise Critic is the food. With the main dining room and buffet restaurant always included, it’s fair to say that you won’t go hungry on a Costa vacation.

However, the standard is more everyday than luxury, with a strong focus on Italian cuisine including salads, breads, and pasta.

Another common grumble from some travelers is the relatively late fixed dining times, which can be as late as 9pm. Although this is perfectly normal in Mediterranean culture, it may not suit all travelers.

Non-Inclusive Business Model

There are specialty restaurants on all Costa ships should you wish to pay for an elevated dining experience. This is one example of Costa’s business model of stripping out many items from the cruise fare and making them optional extras.

Although basic food and onboard entertainment are included in the base fare, there are many additional charges to watch out for, including taxes and gratuities.

Perhaps the biggest bill faced by travelers will be for drinks. Tea, coffee, and water are available in the buffet during its opening hours, but all other drinks are chargeable, even water in the main dining room.

Costa Toscana shares the same cruise ship design as many other Carnival Corporation brands.

This makes beverage packages worth consideration for most travelers, even if you don’t drink alcohol.

High Guest-To-Crew Ratio

One of the biggest differentiators between the standard of cruise lines can be seen by examining the guest-to-crew ratio. Simply put, the more passengers per crew member, the slower and less personal the service is likely to be.

On most mainstream cruise lines, a ratio of around 3:1 is the norm, but on Costa Cruises it can be as big as 4:1. This can result in longer waiting times in the dining room and at the bars, something that is another common complaint from Costa cruisers.

Large Cruise Ships

Costa Cruises was founded in 1948 and became a part of the Carnival Corporation in 2000. Being part of the world’s largest cruise group including famous industry brands Carnival, Cunard, Holland America, P&O Cruises, Princess, and Seabourn, gives Costa several advantages that contribute to its ability to offer low-cost cruising options.

One of the biggest factors is the size of Costa cruise ships. All but one of Costa’s ten ships have a gross tonnage above 100,000, while the newest, Costa Smeralda and Costa Toscana , are among the world’s biggest cruise ships.

The more passengers Costa carries, the cheaper the costs of operation are on a per passenger basis. High numbers of passengers also mean more upsell opportunities.

The Costa Smeralda and Costa Toscana also demonstrate another benefit of being part of the larger group. Both are ‘Excellence-class’ ships, a class of cruise ship ordered by Carnival Corporation for many of its brands. Sharing a design across so many lines leads to a lower unit cost.

Although there are downsides to taking such a cheap cruise, especially the uncertain amount of additional costs and constant upsells, Costa Cruises does offer a compelling value proposition especially for families. If you know what to expect, a Costa vacation can prove to be an enjoyable travel bargain.

3 mistakes I made during my first European cruise kept me from making the most of my trip

  • I took my first European cruise with Virgin Voyages in August 2022.
  • Despite the trip's highlights, I regretted making some mistakes during the voyage.
  • Napping too much and socializing too little kept me from making the most of my cruise.

Insider Today

My first European cruise was awesome — but it could have been better.

In August 2023, I embarked on my first international cruise through the Mediterranean Sea with the luxury, adults-only cruise line Virgin Voyages .

The ship sailed round-trip from Barcelona for seven days, with port stops in France, Italy, and Spain. I was in awe of the historical destinations I visited, from Corsica to Ibiza . And the ship itself was full of unique activities, fine dining establishments, and luxurious details, from vibrant, modern decks to a VIP lounge .

But looking back on the trip, I made some mistakes that kept me from making the most of the voyage.

I took a nap within the first hour of my voyage, leaving me jet-lagged for days.

cruise mediterranean february 2024

As a New Yorker who often travels internationally, I have one rule to avoid jet lag — stay up through the first day, regardless of exhaustion.

Well, on this cruise, I broke it.

After a red-eye flight to Barcelona and a one-night stay in a houseboat I found on Airbnb, where I hardly slept, I was exhausted by the first day of my cruise.

And being six hours from my time zone didn't help.

Once I boarded the ship at 3 p.m., I showered and ate before taking a power nap. I slept much longer than planned and woke up at 7 p.m.

As a result, I was reluctantly awake for most of that first night. I don't remember when I finally dozed off, but I didn't wake up until noon on day two.

The chaotic sleeping schedule left me jet-lagged for days. I napped each afternoon rather than maximizing my time exploring the ship and port stops, and I watched movies in my cabin when I couldn't sleep at night.

My voyage was halfway over when I finally adjusted to the time zone. So, next time, I'll remember what happens when I break my jet lag rule and opt for a coffee over a nap.

I should have socialized more with other passengers.

cruise mediterranean february 2024

On an adults-only cruise ship , there were plenty of passengers to socialize with. And making friends seemed to be the vibe. Strangers spoke to me at dinners, on the pool deck, and during small group excursions.

While I appreciated these brief interactions, I wish I'd made an effort to meet up with these cruisers again. There were travelers aboard from around the world, and I even met some people from NYC.

While I was traveling with my partner and enjoyed activities with him on the ship, some things would have been fun to do in a larger group, like playing board games and racing in the arcade.

In the future, I'll try to develop deeper connections to participate in group activities and perhaps make friends to meet up with at home or during upcoming travels — whether traveling solo or with my partner.

At the end of the trip, I regretted not spending more time in Europe.

cruise mediterranean february 2024

On my flight back to NYC, I thought about how taxing it was to travel so far from home and how fortunate I am to explore other countries.

So, I should have extended the trip to make the most of my time across the Atlantic. It was my first time visiting Spain, and I hardly spent time in Barcelona. Viewing the city's skyline and surrounding mountains from the ship's decks made me long for a chance to explore more.

But after disembarking the ship, I headed straight to the airport for my afternoon flight home.

So, next time I'm on a European cruise, I'll book a few more nights in the ship's home port on the front or back end of the trip to make the most of it.

Norwegian Cruise Line Cancels Some 2025 Sailings on Various Ships

  • March 31, 2024

Norwegian Pearl

Norwegian Cruise Line is cancelling several sailings onboard its fleet for 2025.

According to a statement sent to travel agents, a total of 20 departures across seven different vessels have been affected.

“Due to fleet redeployments, charters and one drydock, we have made the decision to cancel selected sailings onboard our ships,” the company said.

According to the letter, the following cruises are no longer going ahead:

  • Norwegian Epic: Nov. 1, 2025; and Nov. 11, 2025
  • Norwegian Jade: Feb. 20, 2025; Mar. 4, 2025; Mar. 13, 2025; and Mar. 24, 2025
  • Norwegian Pearl: Oct. 15, 2025
  • Norwegian Sky: Apr. 19, 2025; May 5, 2025; May 16, 2025; May 27, 2025; and Jun. 5, 2025
  • Norwegian Spirit: Jan. 1, 2025

  • Norwegian Viva: May 18, 2025; May 27, 2025; Sep. 20, 2025; and Sep. 29, 2025

Affected passengers are being offered the option of rebooking their cruises to alternate dates of travel that offer similar itineraries, the company added.

New cruises to replace the cancelled sailings will be announced in two weeks, Norwegian Cruise Line also said.

The cancelled cruises were set to visit an array of areas of the globe, including the Western and Eastern Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the Adriatic Sea, the Middle East, the Red Sea, Asia and Northern Europe.

Several itineraries included destinations in areas that are currently facing geopolitical challenges, including Israel and the Red Sea.

The Norwegian Viva’s Sep. 29, 2025 departure was scheduled to sail from Haifa, Israel, to Istanbul, Turkey. Sailing for ten nights, the now-cancelled itinerary featured visits to several destinations in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Holy Land, with ports of call in Egypt, Cyprus, Israel, Greece and Turkey.

When you have a large group

If you're able to get a large group of people together for a cruise, you could stand to get your ticket for a reduced price or, better yet, free.

Many cruise lines will give you cruise credit when you book a cretain number of people — often 16 people in a total of eight staterooms.

You can use it to comp your ticket or spread the savings across the group.

But if you can get a free ticket in exchange for your service, that's a good time to say ahoy.

When your loyalty points add up

If you've hit a milestone when you earn travel rewards from your cruise line of choice, this might be the perfect time to book.

Most cruise lines allow you to use points for amenities and upgrades, reducing out-of-pocket expenses.

If you're lucky and make it into the highest echelon of a loyalty program, you may even qualify for a free cruise. What's better than that?

Hoi An (aka Faifoo) is a Thu Bon River cruise port located in the Quang Nam Province (central Vietnam). The city covers a total area of approx 60 km2 (20 ml2) and has population around 122,000. At Hoi An, Thu Bon River empties into South China Sea.

  • Hoi An was designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The Old Town is the city's historic district, recognized as exceptionally well-preserved example of South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th century. Its buildings and street plan reflects an unique blend of indigenous and foreign influences. Prominent is the covered "Japanese Bridge" which dates to the 16th century.
  • Because of the increased number of tourists to Hoi An, various activities are offered allowing guests to explore the outside city areas by bicycles, motorbikes, motorboats or sea kayak.
  • Thu Bon River is essential to the region for over 500 years. It still remains essential for local transportation and food production. Boat trips up the river (to My Son) are one of the major tourist attractions. Motorboating and kayaking are also becoming increasingly popular among tourists.
  • The longtime trading port city Hoi An offers distinctive regional cuisine which blends centuries of influences from Southeast Asia. The city hosts cooking classes where international travellers can learn to make cao lau (braised spiced pork noodle), which is signature Vietnamese dish. The culinary experience has become very popular for visitors.
  • The city has 4 museums highlighting the region's history.
