There’s also not many places in the world where you can be a zoo keeper for the day, and get tips and advice on how to feed various animals from all over the world. That’s why a visit to the London Zoo is a must for any tourist (or even a local!) in London.

The ZSL London Zoo is the world’s oldest scientific zoo (under the Zoological Society of London) as it has been open since 1828, and houses one of the largest animal collections in the UK with over 756 different species living inside its walls.

Highlights The London Zoo

The zoo is split up into different sections such as the African Bird Safari, Fruit Bat Forest, the Butterfly Paradise, and the Reptile House, so there’s no telling what type of animal species you’ll come across during your visit to the London Zoo.

If you’re interested in learning more about marine life, the London Zoo’s aquarium is home to angelfish, stingrays, seahorses and even piranhas, while the Reptile House is home to the likes of crocodiles, rattlesnakes, chameleons and even poison dart frogs!

If you want to learn more about exotic-type animal species, there’s a Land of the Lions exhibition, as well as other sections like The Tiger Territory, The Gorilla Kingdom and Into Africa, which houses zebras, hippos, and even a high-viewing platform so you can see the giraffes face-to-face. If you’re not bothered by the creepy-crawlies, there’s an entire exhibition dedicated to different types of insects and bugs, such as black widow spiders, cave crickets, leafcutter ants and much more.

There’s also Australian-themed exhibits, indoor Rainforest exhibits, and a new Penguin Beach exhibit which contains England’s biggest penguin pool – make sure to keep your eye out for the single, male rock-hopper penguin named Ricky!

Visiting The London Zoo

Recommended visiting time for the London Zoo is around two to three hours, depending on how many animals or exhibits you hope to see. It’s highly recommended that you arrive more than a few hours before last entry so you’re not rushed during your visit.

There are several scheduled events throughout the day depending on what time of the year you visit the zoo. There are daily bird feedings at 11:15 a.m., a Tigers Live! Event and an otter feeding at 12 p.m., and Penguin Beach Live! Shows At three different selected times during the day. Before you visit make sure you check out the London Zoo’s official website for scheduled events and feeding times.

There is also a cafe where you can buy food and drinks during your visit; however the costs can be quite pricey so it may be a good idea to have breakfast or lunch elsewhere before visiting the zoo.

Ticket prices and Opening hours

The London Zoo is open every day of the year (except Christmas) and opens at 10 a.m. Closing times, however, vary depending on the time of year:

• From March to September: 6 p.m.
• September to October: 5:30 p.m.
• November to March: 4 p.m.

Last entry is one hour before closing time each day, but be aware that some animal exhibits may close 30 minutes early.

Ticket costs also vary depending on what time of the year you visit, as well as whether you decide to include an optional 10% donation towards the conservation of the zoo.

Standard tickets cost anywhere from:

• £24.26 to £32.25 for adults
• £17.60 to £24.90 for children ages three to 15

There are also discounted tickets available for seniors, students or disabled adults, which range from £21.80 to £25.29, and children under the ages of three can get in for free.

If you are travelling within a family or group, you can take advantage of some discount package ticket options for families (two adults and two children, or one adults and three children) or groups of 10 people or more, which range from £75 to £82.65.

If the closest thing you’ve had to a wild encounter is dodging brazen urban foxes on your street, perhaps it’s time to book tickets to the zoo. London is lucky to have some marvellous zoos in and around the city. From the world’s oldest scientific zoo ZSL London to the epic 600-acre animal park in Whipsnade – there’s plenty for nature-lovers to get their teeth into.

More than just menageries, these zoos aim to promote the conservation of the animals they work with, and many of them raise funds for projects which they say can help repopulate species in their natural habitats.

From pygmy hippos to Sumatran tigers, there are some beautiful creatures in and around London beyond the pigeons in Trafalgar Square. Whether you’re entertaining kids or looking to learn about nature, you should plan a trip to one of these zoos in and around London, and take a walk on the wild side.

• Regent’s Park

Best for  Wild sleepovers with some scary residents

Situated in Regent’s Park, London Zoo has been entertaining visitors of all ages since 1828, but in the past couple of decades its offering has really been ramped up. Its latest innovation – which is not for the faint-hearted – is an overnight stay at a private lodge, based near the lion pen, where visitors can sleep over with some of the zoo’s resident Sumatran tigers. Yikes.  

As well as ensuring animal welfare and supporting conservation worldwide, the 36-acre park – which is home to everything from pygmy hippos to komodo dragons – also hosts regular interactive events. Keeper for a Day (£280 per person) offers animal lovers the chance to pitch in with the staff on their day-to-day duties, working with giraffes, penguins, coatis, meerkats and more. And Harry Potter fans won’t want to miss the Reptile House to try out their Parseltongue. Just don’t go releasing any snakes, yeah?

Anything else I should know? Some buildings are listed and therefore not accessible, but most of the zoo is wheelchair-accessible, including Land of the Lions and Tiger Territory. Check out the website for more info.

Battersea Park Children's Zoo

• Zoos and aquariums

Best for  Family-friendly animal-watching with little monkeys 

Small but perfectly charming, this zoo was designed with children in mind, making it the perfect place to take little people. Living alongside the usual rabbits, goats, sheep and chickens are more exotic (some endangered) species such as meerkats, lemurs, Scottish wildcats, Asian short-clawed otters, turtles, monkeys, emus and tortoises. In the meerkats’ enclosure children can make their way down a tunnel to pop out on a level with the creatures. The zoo also has indoor and outdoor play areas, picnic tables and The Lemon Tree Café, which serves snacks, kids’ lunchboxes and a much-needed coffee for the grown-ups.

Anything else I should know? The meerkats tuck into their lunch at 11.15am daily, and the coatis get fed at 2pm. Arrive on the dot to watch them get stuck in.

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

• Bedfordshire

Best for  Loping like cheetahs through huge open spaces.

Run by the team behind London Zoo and set in the picturesque Bedfordshire parkland, Whipsnade is home to a huge variety of animals including the favourites – chimps, lions, elephants, camels, zebras, hippos and giraffes. There’s also a must-see herd of endangered white rhinos and an enormous butterfly house.

The emphasis here is on learning about how the animals live in near-as-possible natural habitats. Viewing huts provide exceptional views through glass walls, and they help to minimise disruption to the animals. There are also daily shows where you can watch feeding time, and overnight events (£75 per person) where happy campers can pitch up tents alongside the creatures and wake up to the weird and wonderful noises of the wildlife. Beats your neighbour’s late-night karaoke sesh.

Anything else I should know? This is a big ol’ zoo – 600 acres to be precise – and you can take your car inside to drive around it. This costs an extra £25 from February 16 to October 31. Alternatively, free external parking is available opposite the entrance.

Marwell Zoo

Best for  Spotting flamingos from the zoo’s mini train

From amur tigers to snow leopards, Marwell Zoo is home to one of the most varied and exotic ranges of species. There are also a whopping five adventure playgrounds for little people to explore, two trains, 140 acres of parkland and plenty of picnic areas. Make a beeline for the energetic penguins or learn about the graceful giraffes at the daily talk and feed. Most recently, Marwell revealed a very surprising new guest – a tyrannosaurus rex. She’s part of their new Brickosaurus interactive exhibition and made of Lego, of course.

Anything else I should know? Paying guests with accessibility needs can bring a carer with them for free – you’ll just need to bring proof of entitlement on entry. It’s also 10 percent off tickets if you leave the car and take the bus .

Howletts Wild Animal Park

Best for  Meeting the largest herd of African elephants in the UK

Formerly a private zoo, Howletts was opened to the public in 1975, and since then it’s been offering a more stripped-back zoo experience to those who want to learn about the animals that reside there. That’s not to say there’s no fun to be had. The 90 acres of ancient parkland is home to 400 rare and endangered species, including African elephants, tigers, monkeys and gorillas. Guided walking tours allow you to get up close and personal with the animals from just £35, while The Treetop Challenge (from £7 per person) allows you to scale the branches and see the park from a monkey’s perspective.

Anything else I should know? There’s also a farm shop on site, where you can stock up on local eggs, bread and homemade jams.

The action-packed park is also home to real-life dragons (of the komodo kind obvs), and two amur leopards – the most critically endangered big cats in the world, with an estimated 35 left in the wild. There are also a long list of feeding times, which visitors can use to ensure some close encounters are had with the animals – from the giraffe feed at 12.15 to the elephant feeding at 15.45. Perfectly timed to fit around your own feeding time.

Anything else I should know? Guide dogs are allowed in certain areas, and the zoo also has a sensory exploration route with a map that can be downloaded from their website.

The Regent’s canal opened in 1820, linking the Grand Union Canal and the River Thames at Limehouse, providing a once vital industrial transport route.

Today the canal has become a leisure corridor navigated by leisure boats and lined with live-aboard houseboats.

Our route travels between Little Venice in Maida Vale and vibrant Camden Town where you’ll find the world-famous Camden Market sites.

We pass through the grounds of London Zoo and through the echoey depths of the Madia Hill tunnel

Each boat has large slide-to-open windows, so everyone gets a view.

As we pass through the grounds of London Zoo, look out for the African hunting dogs known as painted wolves, which can often be seen as we pass their canal-side enclosure, as well as their warthog neighbours. On the opposite side, you can see the imposing structure of the repurposed Snowdon Aviary which is now part of Monkey Valley, home to playful Colobus monkeys, as a walk through zoo exhibit.

You can see expansive landscaped gardens of stately mansion houses and classic modern villas contrasted with industrial buildings, a power station and historical architecture including ornamental iron bridges such Macclesfield ‘blow up’ bridge.

From modern-day urban graffiti, unique architecture and industrial heritage to landscaped gardens and wildlife, the route gives an insight into the unique mix that forms this part of London.

Adult (16+) and Children (3-15)

Children under 14 cannot travel alone unless accompanied by an adult (16+). Please note, you may be required to show proof of age at any point during your journey. Failure to do so, may result in the full adult fare being charged.

Children under 14 cannot travel alone unless accompanied by a responsible adult (16+).

Disabled Children

Should be booked as Children. If they are travelling in a wheelchair or require assistance, please call our Assisted Travel Helpline.

We strongly recommend that you bring a car seat appropriate to your child's age, but ask you to take responsibility to fit the seat.

Booster Seats

Children aged between approximately 4-11 years old, or up to 150cm tall, may use booster seats. We carry a limited number onboard most coaches.

If travelling with a child, you may be required to show proof of age when buying tickets or at any point during your journey. Failure to do so may result in the child being required to pay the full fare for the journey on that day.

Children aged between approximately 4 years and 11 years or up to 150cm tall may use booster seats, we carry a limited number onboard most coaches along with our comfort fit seat belts.

Disabled children should be booked as children rather than 'Disabled'. If they are travelling in a wheelchair or you wish to book assistance with travel please call our Assisted Travel Helpline before booking and at least 36 hours in advance of when you would like to travel.

Adult (26 - 59)

Adult fares are applicable to all passengers aged between of 26 and 59 inclusive.

Child 0 - 12 inclusive

Children aged 12 or under travelling on any European service must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over.

Unaccompanied children will not be carried

Young persons (13 - 25)

Children under the age of 16 are not permitted to travel on any European service unless accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over.

Young persons aged 16 or 17 years can travel alone on European services but only if they have a letter of authority from a parent or guardian.

Senior (60 and over)

Passengers aged 60 and over are entitled to receive a small discount on European journeys. On European journeys a 50% discount is given to carers, please call us on 08717 818177 to book.

We have three different Coachcards available, each offering savings of 1/3 on all of our Standard and Fully Flexible coach fares all year round.

Prices shown include your coachcard discount, your coachcard number will be required during the booking process.

Monkey World Monkey World is an Ape Rescue centre based in Dorset. It provides a 65-acre sanctuary to over 250 primates of 20 different species. Monkey World cares for endangered and rescues primates from all over the world. Explore the rescue centre, which you may have seen on TV. Make sure you visit the only Orangutan creche in the world. The enthusiastic keepers offer daily talks so you can get a real insight to how the park is run and how they look after the primates.

Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo is set in over 82 acres of wooded hillside and has over 2,500 amazing and endangered animals. Home to the world-famous Giant Pandas, Tian Tian and Yang Guang, this wildlife attraction has lots to keep the family entertained. Don’t miss out on Europe’s largest outdoor penguin pool and the daily Penguin Parade, a must for all visitors.  Edinburgh Zoo is involved in many programmes, such as captive breeding of endangered animals, research into animal behaviour, and many conservation projects around the world.

Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo is not just a Zoo which all the family can enjoy, but also an award-winning conservation charity. Based in the heart of England and with more than 80 acres of land, Twycross is home to about 500 animals, many of which are endangered. There are around 100 different species of animals including the UK’s only group of Bonobos.

ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo is the world's oldest scientific zoo, originally opened April 1828 for scientific study, it was later opened for the public to enjoy. This great attraction has over 750 animal species to discover, live demonstrations and great exhibits such as Land of the Lions.

Popular Safari Parks to visit by coach

Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat is home to the UK’s first safari park, set in magnificent grounds, it has an abundance of attractions for families to enjoy. Drive through the six and a half miles safari expedition and keep your eyes peeled for majestic lions and playful monkeys. Take a trip on the Longleat Railway or hop on a Jungle Cruise to see a band of lowland gorilla, hippos and sea lions.

West Midland Safari & Leisure Park West Midland Safari Park is located in Worcestershire, the Heart of England. It provides the ultimate drive-through safari experience, over four miles long, getting you up close to the animals. The Park was open in spring 1973, by the famous actress Sophia Loren and is home to over 165 different species including cheetah, elephants and rhinos. This great visitor attraction is also home to a variety of other attractions such as the largest animatronic dinosaur exhibit in the UK and a theme park.
