Review of delta app.

My original flight 3/9 was canceled from JAX to RIC via LGA and Delta rescheduled me on another flight via JFK. Then my departure from JAX to JFK was delayed so much so that my arrival into RIC was being further pushed back. I was given the option to change my flight at no cost which I opted to do but I was not able to see what seats were available. I thought at some point I would be given the option to see available seats prior to finalizing the change but that never occurred. After accepting the change I found I didn’t have a seat assignment on the departure and I was assigned a middle seat (which I despise) on the connection. A passenger should be given the option to see what seats are available before making a change. I can assure you had I known prior to accepting the change that I would have to wait to be assigned a seat at the airport and that I would only have a middle seat on the connection I would not have changed from the rescheduled flight. Then to add insult to injury I used points to sit in Delta comfort from JAX to LGA because of the length of the flight. I no longer want to use points on either leg of the flights via ATL and I sincerely hope my points will be deposited back into my account. I had aisle seats (which I prefer) on both my original flights and I’m very disappointed I don’t have them on either flight tomorrow. I apologize for such a lengthy message; I didn’t expect to have to deal with flight changes that would disrupt my trip.

Change of flight times

After several lights changes since the time I originally booked, my international layover went from 1 hour and 45 minutes to only 40 minutes. A 45 minute layover for an international connection is not enough time, especially as I am flying with a family of five, this forced asked to switch flights. In doing so, I lost the upgraded seats I initially used points for. This would not have been a big deal, but it is highly disappointing that delta would not reimburse you for the points lost due to a change on their end. This policy really needs changed. In addition, the four hour plus waiting to talk to a representative force me to try to utilize the chat function. Even though I know I was able to speak to somebody relatively quickly, I made it all the way to having new flights but the person I was talking to left the chat. Waited a while and then the screen turned out causing me to start over. OK I thought, disappointing but just a fluke, but what do you know it happened again. The second time, I am mediately typed “representative“ and then we can immediately going through the process with a third agent. At least this time all the previous chat information was still up for her to review instead of starting back from scratch. The system need some bugs worked out, it’s also very hard to read on an iPhone.

Unable to upgrade

I had an opportunity to upgrade for a flight and was traveling with another individual. On my app, the seats weren’t available, but was showing availability for who I was traveling with. I tried contacting Delta to discuss the problem and they were unsuccessful with helping and said that they couldn’t see any availability from their end and to check the website. The person that I was traveling with was able to see availability and called to request the seats since we were both traveling on the same flight together. We were told that they would give us a voluntary change since it didn’t show availability on my app. The person I was traveling with didn’t have medallion status and was able to see first class tickets available for the first leg of the international flight, but wasn’t able to upgrade to first class on the flight home. However, I was given the option to upgrade to first class on the last portion of my flight instead of the international portion. I then was told that in order to upgrade, I would have to upgrade the entire flight. I thought that was ridiculous because I didn’t have to do that going on my trip. I had regular seating and then first class for the longer portion of the trip. I should be able to upgrade regardless if it’s available on another person’s app and we are traveling together and both AREN’T MEDALLION MEMBERS. How ridiculous…

Delta is updating the way it boards passengers. Here’s what to expect

Delta Air Lines announced that it’s updating its boarding system to be less confusing for passengers.

Instead of boarding by groups with names such as Diamond Medallions, Delta Premium Select and Sky Priority, passengers will board in groups numbered one through eight.

“When you have a number and you’re standing in line, we are all trained to know when it’s our turn,” CEO Ed Bastian said in an interview with the Associated Press .

The change, which rolls out on May 1, won’t alter the pecking order of when each type of customer gets to board. Those with the cheapest tickets, Basic Economy, will still board last.

“Delta will still offer pre-board opportunities for customers who need extra time or assistance, followed by active-duty military, then Delta 360 Members,” the company noted on its website.

Delta said that boarding lane signs will also be updated to show boarding zone numbers .  

Here’s the full order in which passengers will board:

• Zone 1: Delta One and first-class customers
• Zone 2: Diamond Medallion members and Delta Premium Select Cabin passengers
• Early access: Customers traveling with car seats and strollers
• Zone 3: Delta Comfort+ passengers
• Zone 4: Sky Priority customers
• Zone 5: Main Cabin 1 passengers
• Zone 6: Main Cabin 2 passengers
• Zone 7: Main Cabin 3 passengers
• Zone 8: Basic economy passengers

Delta isn’t the only airline that has updated its system in recent months. Back in October 2023, United overhauled its boarding process so that passengers sitting in window and middle seats could board before those in aisle seats.

Solar eclipse 2024: Photos from the path of totality and elsewhere in the U.S.

Images show the Great American Eclipse, seen by tens of millions of people in parts of Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada for the first time since 2017.

Millions gathered across North America on Monday to bask in the glory of the Great American Eclipse — the moment when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun. 

The path of totality measures more than 100 miles wide and will first be visible on Mexico’s Pacific coast before moving northeast through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois and upward toward New York, New Hampshire and Maine, then on to Canada.

Detroit-bound flight experiences totality of solar eclipse unlike others

In the path of totality — The tickets read Austin, Texas, to Detroit, Michigan, but everyone on board knew the real destination: the dark side of the moon.

Flight 1218 departed Austin at 12:15 p.m. Monday to make the three-hour, 1,148-mile flight to Detroit as a special Delta flight flying passengers in the path of the total eclipse.

As the plane crossed over Missouri at 1:52 p.m., totality was reached, prompting the pilots to conduct a series of turns to allow for views from both sides of the aircraft.

"It was awesome, truly the experience of a lifetime," said Traverse City resident Douglas Leng, one of the passengers. "It was great company, the people on the plane, perfect banking, everything. I got great pictures."

Flight 1218 was one of two unique Delta flights, one from Austin, the other from Dallas, the Atlanta-based carrier designed to fly along the path of totality during the total solar eclipse, for those willing to cough up more than $1,000 for a round-trip main cabin seat from Detroit. The flight from Austin sold out all 130 seats in 24 hours. Another flight from Dallas was added as searches for flights from AUS-DTW on Delta channels spiked by more than 1,500%, according to the airline. It sold out in 24 hours as well.

Cheers started before Flight 1218 was even airborne, and they never stopped even after the plane did. The mood was much brighter than what the people paid to see.

It was the second trip of a lifetime for Livonia resident Paul Donlin, who viewed the last total eclipse in 2017: "That flight was fantastic. It was so amazing to see this kind of thing from the air. It was so clear and crisp. It was absolutely worth the money."

It was a festive atmosphere on the flight, as passengers spent the early part of the flight getting to know one another and trying to figure out how to best capture totality. People moved about, set up cameras and applauded the flight crew a lot. And there was a marriage proposal — and acceptance — after totality. The plane erupted in cheers after Michele Rosenblatt of Queens said yes to Neil Albstein of Manhattan.

The flight took a great amount of planning, according to Delta, including their meteorologists, flight superintendents and others. But it also took some extra work for Delta captains Phil Marshall and Phil Daniels, who were charged with carrying out the mission.

"It was a great flight from takeoff to landing," said Daniels, who piloted the plane with Marshall.

The pair said they spent a lot of time drawing on a board, coming up with a plan and practicing in a simulator. But the flight still posed a challenge for the pair.

"I'll tell ya, when we got up there though today, it was much like we expected ... to be, very unplanned," Marshall said. "The FAA didn't immediately act like they were going to cooperate with us. There were just so many aircraft up there, a lot of people wanting to do the same thing."

But the pair said with the help of Delta dispatch and meteorology, they were able to coordinate with air traffic control to make a series of banking turns over Cape Girardeau, Missouri, to give each side of the plane a two-minute view of totality.

"You got to see what we do on every flight, with everybody coordinating to build the synergy necessary to do something this important," Marshall said.

Before the flight, passengers at Gate 10 at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas were treated to a red carpet affair as they boarded under a canopy of celestial-themed balloons and a DJ playing what seemed like every song that ever mentioned the sun or moon. It was an unusual sendoff for an unusual flight.

During the gate celebration, Delta employees handed out ISO-certified solar eclipse classes donated by Warby Parker and limited-edition Pineapple Habanero and Spicy Gouda-flavored SunChips. Moon Pies were handed out on board the flight and flyers were given a Delta experience trading card, luggage tag and other limited-edition merchandise.

Here's how one airline is planning to provide a total eclipse experience — from 30,000 feet in the air

In a move that has captured the imagination of skywatchers and travelers alike, Delta Air Lines is setting the stage and offering two special flights that will allow flyers to witness next week's total solar eclipse from the best vantage point possible. 

The flights will take place on Monday, with one going from Austin to Detroit and a second route from Dallas to Detroit. Both sold out in 24 hours. These flights were strategically chosen to skirt the path of the eclipse, with a special detour over southeast Missouri planned for the optimal viewing experience. There, the aircraft will perform a meticulous 30-degree bank on either side, granting passengers a rare four-minute glimpse of the eclipse .

Passengers will also be given specialized glasses to provide eye safety to witness the total solar eclipse, which will be visible from Mexico, the U.S. and Canada. 

"I think that we're gonna be able to provide a really unique experience," said Captain Phil Marshall, who, alongside Captain Phil Daniels, will take the helm for the flight.

The challenge of syncing the flights with the moon's swift shadow, which races across the United States at over 1,500 miles per hour, falls on the shoulders of Delta's operations and customer center. Flight Superintendent Erin Wehrman and her team are tasked with navigating the planes not only from point A to point B, but also in alignment with the eclipse.

"We're traveling at about 400 miles per hour, so the sun is actually going to be catching up to us. So we're taking off before it even hit the U.S. border on the south end, and it will catch up to us," said Wehrman.

Weather also plays a crucial role in the day's success. Delta meteorologist Warren Weston is on standby, ready to steer the flights above any potential cloud cover, ensuring a clear view of the eclipse. 

Meanwhile, pilots are preparing for the flight of a lifetime.

"This is fantastic for me," said Marshall. "It's always, every day's like a dream come true for us as pilots."

CHICAGO (Reuters) -Delta Air Lines said on Wednesday it expects the highest second-quarter revenue in its history thanks to buoyant demand for spring and summer travel and what it called the "most constructive backdrop" for the airline industry.

The Atlanta-based carrier forecast a strong profit in the current quarter after reporting better-than-expected earnings in the first quarter.

CEO Ed Bastian said Delta's core consumers are in a healthy position and travel remains a top priority for them. He also highlighted an acceleration in corporate travel spending as well as the efforts by airlines to protect their pricing power in key markets.

"This may be the most constructive backdrop that I've seen in my airline career," Bastian told analysts on a conference call.

Delta shares initially gained 4% before turning negative on Wednesday after hot inflation data that pressured the broader market. The shares, which have gained about 17% so far this year, were down 0.3% at $47.16 in afternoon trading.

The International Air Transport Association IATA expects 4.7 billion people to travel in 2024, compared with 4.5 billion in 2019. In the United States, passenger traffic is estimated to reach an all-time high this year, according to trade group Airlines for America (A4A).

Airline executives say consumers are cutting spending on goods in favor of experiences after the pandemic. Hybrid work arrangements are also allowing Americans to travel more, leading to a surge in spending on air travel, according to A4A.

Demand is particularly strong for premium travel, benefiting carriers like Delta, which is trying to attract travelers who are willing to pay for something other than just a seat.

"Generational shifts and evolving consumer preferences are driving secular growth in premium experiences," Bastian said.

Consumer demand is booming at a time when airlines are struggling with aircraft shortages, constraining their ability to supply more seats during peak travel periods, translating into stronger pricing.

Delta expects unit revenue - a proxy for pricing power - to be flat compared with last year in all geographies except Latin America.

It also reported an improvement in the U.S. market as its domestic unit revenue turned positive in the March quarter, with an improvement of 7 percentage points from the previous quarter.

"Despite all of the aircraft issues in the industry, demand is still healthy and Delta's guidance is reflecting that," said Christopher Raite, senior analyst at Third Bridge.

While Delta's operations are not impacted by Boeing's safety crisis, the airline said industrywide supply-chain constraints have forced it to keep flying older, less fuel-efficient jets and spend more on repairs. The company did not retire any aircraft in the last two years.

It forecast an adjusted profit of $2.20 to $2.50 per share in the quarter through June, compared with analysts' expectation of $2.23 per share, according to LSEG data. It expects to post an operating margin of 14% to 15%, with a 5% to 7% year-on-year increase in second-quarter revenue.

Adjusted profit for the first quarter was 45 cents a share, compared with analysts' expectations of 36 cents per share.
