Digha: The Beach Town Situated on the Shores of Bay of Bengal

digha tourist shopping

traveller Souvik

Digha Travel Guide for planning your trip on a budget will help you explore this destination without creating holes in your pocket. Enjoy the scenic beach town of Digha and return enchanted.

The beautiful beach town of Digha is situated by the shores of the mighty Bay of Bengal. It is situated in the south of West Bengal or as the Bengalis say, “ Poschim Bongo”  (I know that because I am a Bengali too). Digha is very near to the Bengal and Odisha border. This is surely a place which is well within reach for all people easily.

I hope that after reading this detailed Digha Travel Guide, you imagine yourself visiting typical Indian streets, astounding beaches, and eating phenomenal regional delicacies. Once you’re done the reading, I’m sure you’ll be convinced to travel to Digha and experience something wonderful.

Digha Travel Guide

The beautiful beach town of Digha is situated by the shores of the mighty Bay of Bengal. It truly is a shame that not many know of this enchanting destination. However, this is something that makes it all the more unexplored, serene, and special.

Digha Travel Guide on a Budget: An Overview

Digha is a small town located in the Indian state of West Bengal. Situated in the south of the state and very near to the Bengal-Odisha border, this coastal town is by far the most-visited weekend/mini holiday getaway for most people living in the state.

“3-days long weekend upcoming? No problem, let’s go to Digha!”

“Want to escape from the rush of monotonous city life? Let’s go to Digha!”

“Want to spend a romantic outing with your better half? Go visit Digha!”

“Let us just go to Digha” is all that the travel passionate people care for here. Of course, this applies to the people who are in close proximity to the place unless you really want to discover yourself in a new heaven-like place even if you live far.

Digha Travel Guide

Digha is the perfect destination to enjoy shimmering sunsets and seafood. Some spicy fried prawns along with a chilled beer make for a classic combination by the beach. Furthermore, what makes it even better is the fact that it’s super cheap.

Digha Travel Guide: Best Time to Visit

Being a coastal town, Digha can be extremely humid in the rainy season as well as in summers. So as per the Digha travel guide, the best time to visit it is in the winter or at least nearing the winter months i.e October to February.

Modes of Travel Inter City and Intra City

As per the Digha travel guide, the best mode of travel to Digha is via road. Usually, there are two main connecting roads to the other parts of the state from Digha. One is directly connecting Kolkata, and the other one is actually joined to NH2 near Raniganj via Kharagpur.

If road travel is not what you intend to opt for, then another great alternative is travelling by train. Hats off to the Indian Railways   for connecting us with even the most remote places of the country. It almost seems like it has stitched and kept the country intact.

If this is also not an option for you, then you might consider travelling waterways or maybe even airways. Who knows! Maybe this is the time to finally test your private Chopper. I’m not kidding.

Digha travel guide

View of the landscape outside as seen from the train window. Trains are my personal favourite way of travelling around the country. It’s cheap, comfortable, scenic, environment-friendly, and also often a great way to meet like-minded travelers.

Digha Travel Guide:  Budget Plan for First Time Travelers

This is always the trickiest and most difficult part of the Digha travel guide. Good thing is that Digha is one of the cheapest places in Bengal, so planning a budget for Digha shouldn’t be an issue. You can easily go for a 4 day trip with an expenditure of around Rs.5000 to Rs.8000 per person. The best part is that if you travel in a group, the expenditure becomes almost half of what has been mentioned above.

Breaking Down the Budget for a Nominal Trip

Transportation.

Taking a train from Kolkata to Digha will be in the Price Range of Rs.100 to Rs.1100 per person, depending upon the type of seating you choose. The least priced ticket is for a non-AC second-class seater, and the highest-priced ticket is the AC-Executive Class seater where catering is included, and the first-class service is provided.

You can also opt for bus service from Kolkata to Digha, where the price range of ticket is Rs.125 to Rs.400 per person. The least priced ticket is for Government transportation buses, and the highest priced ticket is by luxury full-AC private semi-sleeper buses.

Of course, there are other places where people can travel to Digha from, but via Kolkata is the most popular route and hence, you should choose this option.

Please make sure that you travel in a way that you directly reach Digha and don’t go to the nearest place first. Else, you’ll waste both money and time.

Digha travel guide

A budget trip can easily be planned to the beach town of Digha. However, this completely depends on your choices. If you’re willing to compromise on some amount of comfort and convenience, a budget-friendly trip to Digha is more than possible.

For a typical 4 night-5 day Digha trip experience, you may look forward to something which will cost you around Rs.3000 and up. This is actually cheap for a beach town. This predictive price is based on lodging for 3 people in a hotel, meaning that it will cost about 1000 INR per person.

Food is very cheap in this town compared to any other beach town in India. You may look forward to spending anything less than   Rs.500 per day per person.

Digha Travel Guide:  Activities and Sight Seeing

Water sports as a total package will cost you around Rs.1000 per person.

Renting a two-wheeler will cost you about Rs.100.

Entry to all the parks will cost around Rs.10 to Rs.50 and an additional cost will be the rides in the park which are optional.

Renting an “electric Toto” for a city tour will cost around Rs.500.

Intra-city transport is also available, and you can share a ride in the toto or a “motored 3-wheeler thela” for a price of Rs.10 per person.

Buying souvenirs and other pretty and attractive stuff will vary from person to person, and it cannot be included in this budget, However, do keep some extra money if you are an extensive shopper.

Digha Travel Guide:  Places for Sight Seeing

The marine aquarium by the zoological survey of india.

Well, this is a place where you will find yourself surrounded by the most beautiful creatures of the sea world. Most of you have only seen them either on TV or on the internet, or maybe physical pictures or images and videos. You might not have ever imagined to see them in real life. On average, you will spend around one hour at this place. You’ll surely enjoy.

Digha travel guide

A silver shaded lobster at the Marine Aquarium. Here, you will find yourself surrounded by the most beautiful creatures of the sea world. Open for the public since 2003, this aquarium also caters to the needs of students, scientists, and researchers.

Chandaneswar Temple

We all know how diverse our culture is, and how religious and spiritual we are. Well, Digha is no different. This place is situated right near the Odisha border, and the interesting part is that you actually have to cross the border in order to visit this temple.

The Science Museum

While most of you might just visit the place for taking a break or doing other activities, the Science Museum is a place worth visiting. This is especially for those who are into science and even people who love acquiring knowledge of various things.

One thing is for sure, I can bet that you will revisit your school days once you enter the museum. Seeing various types of scientific demonstrations, most of which relate to the experiments studied in school was truly nostalgic. The fun part is that you get to participate in those science activities happening around you.

Digha travel guide

Digha Travel Guide for the Two  Parks: Wonderland and Amarabati

Both of these parks are equally beautiful and perfect places for short walks. When you want time to move slowly, the Wonderland and Amaravati parks are an absolute must-visit. While the former is slightly smaller compared to the latter, I promise you, it still is a pure thrill. The enormous amounts of joy that you will receive when you come down riding slides will prove to be fun. Also, you can go boating in lakes, spend some time strolling around a mini zoo or take a ride on a beautiful toy train around the park.

Wild Geese

Wild geese as seen at the Wonderland park in Digha. The park is open from 8 am to 8 pm on all days of the week, and is frequently visited by locals and tourists alike. If you do not want to engage in any of the activities, simply read a book or nap under a tree.

Digha Travel Guide for  Old Digha and New Digha Beaches: Which One is Better?

Even though both beaches are good, as a traveler, I’d say that Old Digha Beach is better than New Digha Beach. Also, Old Digha Beach is more comfortable when it comes to seating. There are stone seat places across the beach where you can sit and gaze at the sea. The tides in the Bay of Bengal are very rough so while you enjoy yourself, prevent going too far in the sea.

Digha Travel Guide

Make sure that you don’t venture far into the Old or New Digha beaches. They are beautiful, yet dangerous. Even seasoned and experienced swimmers can be swept out. Also, note that the Old Digha beach is more comfortable when it comes to its seating.

Digha Travel Guide for Where and What to Eat at the Beaches ?

If you’re near the sea, you should most certainly feed yourself with fish and crabs. This is what the Digha travel guide suggests as well. Crabs in Digha are one of the best in the state. So, please go for them. Enjoy the freshest of seafood from almost any of the street food stalls or even restaurants.

After this quick snack, if you feel it’s time for dinner/lunch, there is a great restaurant in Old Digha that sells one of the best Biriyanis in the city. My suggestion will be the famous chicken Biriyani.

To make your meal a perfect combo, end your day with the most soothing and refreshing natural drink of all time, the Coconut water or as they say “ daab/narkel er jol. ”

Digha Travel Guide

When in Digha, make sure you sip on some fresh coconut water. There is nothing as pure as this drink, that comes straight from the coconut trees lining the beaches. A coconut should cost you as little as 30-35 INR. Trust me, it’s totally worth it.

Digha Travel Guide: Safety for Backpackers – Top Tips

The first Digha Travel Guide tip is to not venture deep inside beaches. Not only can you be bitten by sea snakes, but also sink yourself.

The second Digha Travel Guide tip is to spend more time at Old Digha Beach but to stay near New Digha beach only.

Lastly, beware of pickpockets around the town.

Keep these 3 Digha Travel Guide tips in mind at all times and have a fantastic Digha tour.

Now, stop with the imagination, and start making your next trip to Digha. Frankly speaking, don’t even make a plan. Just start because you already got this, so what’s left to plan?

Happy Wayfaring 🙂

A Weekend Trip to Digha – Bengal’s own Goa

' src=

Last Updated on August 3, 2023

This Digha travel blog is just an account of our weekend trip to Digha, my first trip with my little one who was just 10-months-old at the time. Huge waves splashing on the rocks and then to your face. The beautiful Sal Forest providing the much-needed respite from the scorching sun in the beach. That’s how I pictured Digha when I heard of it in my childhood days. Located a little over 200 km from Kolkata, Digha is the evergreen tourist hotspot for the city-dwellers. However, I never got the chance to visit Digha till June this year. This was the first trip since October 2020 and with our little one.

The post contains affiliate links for tours, hotels etc. This means if you make any purchase through the links in the post, I may get a commission without any additional cost to you.

A Quick Outline

First impression of Digha

digha tourist shopping

Digha is probably the most tourist-dense places I have visited in India, closely followed by Kodaikanal . These are domestic tourists, mainly from the home state West Bengal itself. We went in late June, when we experienced alternate days of unbearable heat and rainfall. Naturally this happens to be the off-season for any tropical beach. But even then, hotels were full, the beaches in vicinity were all too crowded and there was a rush at the famous Amravati Park till the time of closure.

The great thing about Digha is the beautification of some old beaches – the old Digha beach, the Shankarpur beach and some new beaches as well. They are all amazing to visit with the elderly and kids alike because of ample seats to rest in the shade. The Shaal forests are peaceful places to stroll, for those who can’t be in the crowd. If you are going by car, drive to the slightly secluded places like the Tajpur Beach and Talsari beach. Digha is also a fantastic place for shopping, so make sure you have some extra space for bringing back the goodies.

We started late on Friday at around 9 am after getting our 10-month-old ready. The road from Kolkata to Digha is quite a breeze once you get through the initial hurdle of Behala’s traffic. We reached our hotel at 2pm after driving around 185 km. It was a good idea to eat and take some rest while escaping the scorching summer sun of June.

Our stay in Digha

digha tourist shopping

We stayed at Hotel Daltin, which was located close to the Dheusagar Park Beach. While the location was within a walkable radius of the major points of interest like Old Digha Beach, New Digha Beach and Amarabati park, it didn’t have a sea-view.

Because of the huge tourist influx, the price of good hotels is on the higher side. But the entire coastline is lines with hotels and lodges for all pocket-sizes. They are mostly full on the weekends, so advance booking is a must.

digha tourist shopping

Plan ahead so that you can book the government lodge that is located close to the old Digha beach. It is cheap and well-equipped for a decent stay. Although you will not get the luxury of pool and spa, the spacious rooms, and the proximity to the beautiful old Digha beach compensate for it.

Since there is so much to see and do in Digha, I’d rather not splurge on an expensive spa resort. For that you have the nearby beach-town Mandarmoni. Digha is a place for backpackers and thrifty tourists. Here are some other places I recommend.

Evening drive to Talsari Beach, Odisha

digha tourist shopping

Well, that sounds strange right? Skip all major tourist spots and drive 10 km to a different state of India? Well, we started off with New Digha – the throbbing, overcrowded beach-cum-market. I don’t mind the crowd when you have a vast sand beach to explore. But New Digha Beach is not a sand beach. It’s a rock beach where the crowds hustle to get photos and see the sunset. It’s really the kind of experience that drives me away. And it did drive me far away to the Talsari Beach in Odisha.

digha tourist shopping

It was a lovely experience to escape to this serene beach in rural Odisha. It is popular and hosts many tourists – like a quarter of the tourists in New Digha. But mark me, even that’s not a small number. Lined by the cashew forests, the rugged beauty of the sea will leave you enchanted in the evening.

We had a lot planned for the next day. Starting with old Digha Beach, Amravati Park, Marine Aquarium, and all the way to the distant beaches of Tajpur and Mandarmani. But with elderly parents and an infant, things don’t always go as planned.

Morning walk to Dheusagar Beach-Park

digha tourist shopping

Before breakfast we had a brisk walk to the adjacent Dheusagar beach-park. It is a relatively new attraction in Digha. The beautified park amidst the Shaal Forest opens at 9 am. Though we couldn’t enter the park’s premises, we walked through the forests up to the beach.

The early morning views of the beach are spectacular as usual. Even though the sky was overcast, I loved the ambience of the morning.

Drive to Mandarmani

digha tourist shopping

Mandarmani is a resort-town near Digha. Most of the beaches are private and owned by the resorts. The one we landed at by following the Google Maps was a secluded beach with not a single tourist.

Keeping the heavy traffic of old Digha in mind we drove straight to Mandarmani. The experience was quite unique with and refreshing after the overcrowded Digha. But with the strong gush of sand blowing across our face we couldn’t linger there for long.

Tajpur Beach – My favorite

digha tourist shopping

Tajpur beach is located midway between Digha and Mandarmani. Not only is this beautiful and secluded, but also beautified by the government of West Bengal. With beach-shacks, cafes and parks, this is the perfect beach for families. There are ample shaded places to sit and enjoy the views on a sunny day or when it rains.

Read: The Best Beaches for families in India

Also this is a sand beach where you can bathe, play and make sand-castles. Another refreshing change from the rock beaches of Digha.

Sunset at Mohana End point

digha tourist shopping

After this we came back to the hotel for lunch and rest. We set out once again in the evening and drove past the Old Digha Beach to Mohana end point. Over-tourism ensured that we indeed had to drive to the “END POINT” to find a parking spot for our car. But this place had was quiet and calm- just the way I like it in an evening at the seashore.

Since this is on the eastern coast, you can catch the sunset on the opposite side of the sea. I walked up to the watchtower to manage a couple of decent pictures. Wasn’t too good.

Old Digha and Amarabati Park

Old Digha Beach looked beautiful from far away. It’s also well-beautified by the state government and has a throbbing market near it. However, since we didn’t get a parking slot we drove straight to the Amarabati Park.

Amarabati Park is one of the most popular tourist spots in Digha. It has beautifully curated garden which you can explore through the lovely walkways. There is an artificial lake for boating and a ropeway too.

Day 3 – Homebound

digha tourist shopping

On our way back we headed to the Shankarpur beach – a fishing village which has now been beautified similar to the old Digha beach. I must say that this was my second-favorite spot in the Digha trip, besides Tajpur Beach.

Digha Trip -Shankarpur Beach

Well, if you are looking for a perfect Digha itinerary, this is not the one. This was our first trip after a span of 1.5 years, and we enjoyed the short getaway. The news of communal violence erupting in different parts of India did scare us right in the middle of the trip. But thankfully everything went smoothly.

I’d conclude that Digha is a great place for weekend getaway if you don’t mind the crowd. It’s better to use the local transport options in Digha instead of your own car. That way you not only help the environment, boost the local economy and a responsible traveler by doing so, but it is also convenient. Getting a parking spot at the major tourist spots is not easy.

It will take two days only to explore the Digha town. One would love to spend more time in the areas like Tajpur Beach or Talsari beach, for which you’d need to add a couple more days to your holiday.

Well, that was my travelogue of Digha. Have you been there? Let me know in the comments section and share the article if you liked it. Here’s an image for you to pin.

It’s not Bangladesh. it is a highly popular tourist destination in the Indian state West Bengal.

Nice to read your blog author. Thank you. Keep it up.

I had never been to Digha of which I heard so much even from my own relatives. Now the nice article by Sinjana Ghosh took me there as I read it from abroad. I started imagining what else can be added to the list of things to be done to boost the tourists flow and economy there. Here are some suggestions for the government and entrepreneurs.

1. Plant a lot of trees especially near the marshy areas- trees like coconut and palm trees, These will prevent erosion of the soil near the beach area apart from adding to the scenic view. Flower plants will catch the eye of tourists. 2. Restaurants, shops with many varieties, some amusement centers including a big size movie screen displaying current news and history of Digha and future plan of development, big size aquariums, ATM machine etc. will attract tourists. 3. It is necessary to have nice hotels nearby. 4. Well trained coast guards and arrangement for swimsuits/jackets (on payment) can encourage tourists to enjoy well in the water without fear. 5. Thanks to the government for trying to improve road connectivity.

Thanks, Mr. De, for such a thoughtful comment. I agree with you on all these ideas. However, there are already a large number of hotels accommodating many tourists. I believe, coast guards and water activities can increase the earnings for the local population.

Your tour weblog on the weekend day trip to Digha is an absolute delight! The vivid descriptions and fascinating pictures without a doubt transported me to the serene seashores and charming locales you explored. Thank you for sharing your experience in so much detail! Digha is no doubt one of the famous tourist hotspots in West Bengal. This thorough itinerary will not only help people of Bengal but also from outside to plan their vacation at Digha smoothly and not miss out on any spot. Keep sharing more blogs on your travel experiences! Also, I would suggest that staying near the seaside elevates one’s experience more. Hotel Utopia is one of the best hotels in Old Digha near sea beach which is totally affordable and you or anyone can try planning your next stay there!T

Thanks a lot Akash. I will consider this option next time.

digha tourist shopping

Travel to the vibrant seaside town of Digha in West Bengal for a holiday filled with photographs of stunning beaches, towering palm trees, magnificent temples, and some lovely flora and wildlife. Located on the Bay of Bengal, Digha is also referred to as the Brighton of the East. John Frank Smith, an Englishman who was vacationing in Digha in 1923, was taken aback by the city’s natural beauty and decided to stay. His works on Digha gradually increased people’s awareness of this location. After India’s independence, he successfully persuaded Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, to establish Digha as a beach resort.

15 tourist places in Digha to visit

If you are planning to visit Digha, these tourist places will ensure you the most memorable beach holiday ever.

New Digha Beach

digha tourist shopping

The fact that New Digha Sea Beach has a relatively small number of visitors compared to other beaches in the area contributes to its popularity among tourists. This beach, lined with casuarina trees that are a feast for your eyes, extends for nearly one mile before it meets the sea. Take a stroll on the smooth and warm beach, drink some coconut water, or relax in the embrace of nature while taking in the breathtaking vistas around you.

Do not miss out on the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets that can be seen on New Digha Beach. This beach is both enchanted and beautiful. In addition, there are many additional attractions in Digha, such as gardens and aquariums, that are located close to this beach.

Old Digha Beach

digha tourist shopping

Old Digha Beach is the first sea beach established in the city. This beach was the only one that existed for a significant amount of time. On the other hand, quite a few upgrades and enhancements have been carried out on this beach in recent decades. One of the most important initiatives that the West Bengal government worked on was renovating the Old Digha sea beach.

You will most certainly take pleasure in the view of the sea that you get from the vantage  point. If you want to purchase a memento from Digha, there is a quaint little market located close to the beach.

Shankarpur Beach

digha tourist shopping

The beach at the Shankarpur Sea is often referred to as the twin beach at the New Digha Sea. The beach has parking spaces accessible for visitors. Casuarina trees may be seen growing all over this beach. Digha beach tends to be more congested than Shankarpur beach. You will get a wonderful view of the beach framed by the boats used by local fishermen and by lines of trees.

Mandarmani Beach

digha tourist shopping

Beachgoers who like to avoid congested locations may find Mandarmani to be an ideal option. You can describe the beach in Mandarmani as a lonely place. However, more and more people are flocking to this location daily. This is one of the most interesting spots to visit around Digha, and it is just 23 kilometres from the city. It is possible to reach Mandarmani via the available local transport options. Compared to the New Digha beach, this beach is flatter and wider.

Udaipur Beach

digha tourist shopping

The Udaipur beach in Digha is widely regarded as one of the cleanest and most beautiful beaches across India’s coastal regions. This beautiful beach is characterised by the presence of towering casuarina trees and impromptu kiosks set up by fishermen to sell their catch.

There are also a variety of fun activities from which to pick, allowing visitors to have a good time with their loved ones and friends. These include swimming or going for a long stroll along the shoreline, participating in exciting water sports like speed boating or banana boating, riding bicycles, and trying out some regional specialities. The beachside restaurants provide mouthwatering regional specialities, consisting of seafood dishes like fish curries and prawns, and are known for their deliciousness. Coconuts are also very easily accessible here, and their costs are quite low.

Talsari Beach

digha tourist shopping

Talsari beach is often considered one of the most tranquil locations in Digha. Even though this beach is officially in the Baleswar district of Odisha, it is simple to get there from Digha due to its proximity. The beach is at a point where the Bay of Bengal and the Subarnarekha rivers meet.

The stunningly magnificent scenery of Talsari beach is characterised by the presence of a variety of vegetation, including palm and cashew trees. You can get a more authentic experience of the place by going on a boat excursion in the Bay of Bengal. Swimming in Talsari is a popular activity for a lot of people.

Chandipur Beach

digha tourist shopping

Chandipur Beach is one of the less well-known locations on the shore of the Bay of Bengal. The beach is often regarded as the best location for taking it easy and unwinding since it provides both a stunning view of the sea and emerald-coloured water. The beach is unlike the beaches found elsewhere in the area since the banks have suffered some erosion, and the water from the sea has produced a recession in the area.

The Marine Aquarium and Research Centre (MARC)

digha tourist shopping

For all of Digha’s visitors, the marine aquarium and regional centre are a must-see sight during their time here. The aquarium is home to three distinct sorts of animals: species of significant conservation value, species that are considered to be “local and fascinating,” and freshwater species. MARC has eight freshwater tanks in addition to 24 huge marine tanks, and it is estimated that it will take you at least two hours to go around. The horseshoe crab, rays, sea snakes, butterflyfish, and sea anemones are just some of the more frequent types of marine life that can be seen in this location.

Digha Science Centre

One of the most popular destinations for tourists in Digha is the Digha Science Centre and National Science Camp, which has many attractions, including 3D theatres, galleries, light and sound performances, and more. If you are travelling with kids, this will be a fantastic destination that the whole family can enjoy exploring together. A nature study on butterflies, a day devoted to yoga, a science quiz, a science fair, workshops on coastal water pollution, and a lot more are just a few of the enjoyable things you can do at the Science Centre.

Amarabati Park

digha tourist shopping

Amarabati park is a haven of tranquillity away from the clamour and activity of the coastal community; it has verdant grassy meadows, a picture-perfect lake, and colourful flowering plants. The park’s popularity among visitors is likely due in part to the breathtaking panorama it offers of New Digha. The lake in this location is one of the features that attract the greatest attention and intrigue.

While you are touring the park, you can opt for paddling a boat. You can also enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the whole area by taking a trip on the ropeway inside the park.

Bichitrapur Mangrove Sanctuary

digha tourist shopping

Bichitrapur is a modest town in the Baleswar (Balasore) district of Odisha. It is around 15 kilometres away from Digha in West Bengal. The Odisha Forest Sector Development Programme is responsible for developing it to assist in the regeneration, conservation, and preservation of mangrove forests. Taking a boat ride is your best bet to get the most out of a one-hour trip through the forest. This new location has just opened its doors to the general public and has quickly established itself as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Digha area.

Digha Mohona Watch Point

digha tourist shopping

Mohona Watch Point, located near Digha, is a popular tourist destination because it overlooks the point where the River Champa meets the Bay of Bengal. It provides breathtaking panoramas, not just of the dawn but also of the surroundings and the landscape beyond. In the mornings, the site also functions as a bustling fish market, where fishermen come to gather, pack, distribute, and transport many different kinds of fish to a wide variety of places.

There is no better place to be than at the market to feel the energetic nature of Digha’s business life. You can observe dried Bhetki and Hilsa of substantial sizes, both of which are available for purchase here. The Watch Point is a fascinating location; nevertheless, some people may be put off by the strong aroma of fish that permeates there.

Diga Jahaz Bari

New Digha is home to the exquisitely crafted showhouse combining park known as Jahaz Bari. The inside is adorned with sculptures of fish and dolphins, while the outside is fashioned in the style of a ship. The 7D shows that guests may see costs around INR 100 per person for the whole duration of the event. This venue also provides virtual reality (VR) bike rides, virtual reality (VR) automobile trips, virtual reality (VR) cricket (two overs), and virtual reality (VR) rides for six-seaters. Visitors may indulge in some delicious cuisine at the well-known Koshe Kosha restaurant located here.

Kajal Dighi Wonderland

Wonder Land, also known as Kajal Dighi, is a location that people of all ages would enjoy visiting. You may have a fantastic time at the park, which has a railway model and various swings for you to choose. Because there are so many activities and attractions geared toward children, you must pay a visit to this park if you travel with children. The location is well-known for its peaceful vistas, making it an excellent destination for tourists to check out. In addition, you may go boating here if you want.

digha tourist shopping

When arriving in Digha by roadway, the Digha gate will be the very first sighting catching your attention. The Digha gate is not like any other entrance in the city. The gate is designed in such a way that it resembles a fishing boat from the outside. It was conceived as a way to pay homage to the fisherman, who constitute the most significant component of the economy of the town.

Because the Digha gate is well-known among travellers, many vacationers choose to take photos in front of it as a memento of their time in India. The gate’s colour scheme of white and blue works very well with the natural elements around it. If you go to the gate in the evening, you will see that it is lit up with lights to make it more festive. Even more stunning is the appearance of the gate when darkness falls.

When is the perfect time to visit Digha?

Digha, a popular weekend destination for West Bengal residents, is especially appealing during winter. It is recommended to visit Digha during October and February.

What is the local cuisine of Digha?

Digha offers some of the finest seafood, fish specialities, and Bengali cuisine. Therefore, be sure to get the Pomfret, Rohu, Bhetki, Fried Fish, and Tiger prawns. Even vegetarians have several alternatives, such as continental food. In addition, fresh coconut water is reasonably cheap here.

Who should make the trip to Digha?

The beaches make it an ideal location for newlyweds to spend their honeymoon. This location is an absolute must-see for those who like nature and seafood.

What can we purchase in Digha?

Jute goods and showpieces, which are stunning and reasonably priced, can be found in Digha. In addition to a wide variety of other goods, doormats are available at a discounted price. These products are robust and long-lasting.

Digha Tour Plan from Kolkata

History of digha.

Digha is the closest sea beach destination near Kolkata city . Digha Whoever resides in West Bengal visits this place at least once in a lifetime. It’s the oldest low-budget tourist spot and a famous economic destination. The sea is not as rough, and the waves are not as strong as you get on southern beaches like Puri Beach, Chennai, Vizag, etc.

The place is called Brighton of the East. The sea has gentle waves and a calm and peaceful atmosphere. The town of Digha is gradually spreading to cope with the tourist demands on the borders of Orissa. It is an ideal spot to spend a weekend.

The beauty was discovered in the late 18th century by Warren Hastings before known as ‘Beercool.’ It was reborn at the hands of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. But, today, the old Digha sea beach is now crowded.

My 1 Night 2 Days Digha Tour Plan from Kolkata

It’s my second trip after the  Shimla-Manali tour from Kolkata . We have done a suddenly planned weekend tour with my husband. The first view of the beach is mesmerizing.

I saw some were busy having sea baths, some were shopping, and the rest were enjoying the seashore breeze. We enjoyed the Cheerful weather, the hilarious sea breeze, and the pine forests on the beach. Local Peoples are excellent & friendly.

Digha Beaches are the places where you sit and admire the natural sceneries. You can sit there for hours looking at the endless sea. It was probably my 10th trip when I wrote the article about Digha tourist spots and Sea Beaches in West Bengal.

1st Day – How to reach Digha from Kolkata – Our Holiday story

We started the trip from Howrah station by Tamralipta Express on the first day. We boarded the train this morning at 6:40 am; it takes 4.30 hours to reach Digha from Howrah station (around 10:10 am). Many autos and Toto are standing outside the station. We take a rickshaw to get to our hotel. A regular bus from Esplanade is also going to Digha daily.

In the Evening, Enjoy at Digha Sea Beach

After coming to the hotel and resting, we went to the beach. It’s low-crowded and clean (not on Saturday/Sunday). There are many coconut sellers on sea beaches, and we bought some coconut from one of them and kept shoes and mobile there.

We spent an hour on the sea beach. While we were enjoying the sea bath, the local Photographer took pictures of us. After that, we returned to the hotel and finished lunch. That time, the Photographer delivered the images to my hotel address.

We revisited the sea beach in the evening and enjoyed the high tide view. It is beautiful to see from the beachside. But be careful, do not bathe at this time, which can be dangerous.

Second Day – Digha Sightseeing

On the second day, we woke up in the early morning and reached the sea beach to see the sunrise. At that time, many red crabs were roaming the entire coast.

You can find many tourist places in Digha, like Digha Mohana and Fish Market, Digha Science Centre, Digha Science Centre, Satsang, Mandarmani Sea Beach, Tajpur, Sankarpur, etc.

Digha Science Center

We visit those places with a toto and return to our hotel in the evening. Last, we took the train from Digha around 6:30 pm and reached Howrah around 10 pm.

Where to Stay in Digha – Best Hotels and Resorts

Today, Digha has many hotels, holiday homes, resorts, etc. You can easily reach your desired destination and get a room within your budget. Rooms are available, starting from 200 rupees to 5000 rupees.

Old Digha’s room rent is lower than new Digha’s, and old Digha is also crowded compared to new Digha. In my experience, a sea-facing room is unnecessary in Digha because the sea is a small distance from any hotel. Trying to stay near the sea beach helps to save time and money and quickly reach the beach whenever you want.

Please note that many people come to Digha from Kolkata every weekend. I do not recommend spot booking because the hotel owner or staff demands more than average rates. Book your room in advance, especially on Saturday and Sunday.

Old and New Digha Sea Beach West Bengal, India

There is two sea beach, old Digha and New Digha. New Digha Sea Beach is still low, crowded and clean. The distance between both coasts is one kilometre.

The Govt. of West Bengal made the beach beautiful and decorated it with parks and lights. The beaches are highly crowded in the evening to watch waves with a cool sea breeze. You can hire a bike for Orisha Mohona. Watch my entire  Digha playlist  on YouTube to know the current situation.

Digha Seafood

There are a vast number of options for food. If you want fresh seafood and local sweet water fish, visit Nehru market; otherwise, go to Mohana or  Udaypur Beach . Nehru market is the best option to get fish/crab at a low price.

Now the question comes of how to eat them? No worries, many hotels are frying those fish and making tasty curries at a nominal price. Also, various fish stalls will cook and serve you on demand.

Also, there’s Wow Momo, Domino’s Pizza, and Barista Cafe near the beach. And there are other readymade fish fry and snack stalls on the beach.

You can enjoy street food, and fried fish is trendy among tourists. Multiple other restaurants and roadside food stalls offer excellent food at a reasonable price, and even roadside stalls are of very excellent & tidy quality. But the hygiene of the place made me a little sad.

Shopping at Digha

A beachside market is a must-visit place for small trinkets or showpieces made of seashells. You could get beautiful conch-shell jewellery, sankha, and kids -toys from the beachside vendors.

All the shops display jewellery, toys, home decor and many more. Some sea stone articles look gorgeous. Shopping at the beachside market is memorable for me. I bought some locally designed mats, bags, slippers, and food items like Peanuts, sweet coconut, etc.

Water Sports in Digha

If you know how to swim, ride a boat; the waves are calm and steady here. Deep in the water by boat is perfectly safe here. In the monsoon season, the activity stops due to high tides.

Best time to visit the Digha beach

Visit the place from late Oct to Early February or Visit in March to May before the Monsoon, as one could enjoy the roaring waves on the beach and have seaside fun.

Digha Tour Precautions

Some ricksha walla will take you to the hotel if you haven’t made the booking prior. This way, your hotel stay will be costly as the rickshaw walla will ask to broker charge from the hotel. I would recommend directly going to the hotel and discussing the rates.

Digha Vs Mandarmani

The main difference between Digha Vs Mandarmani is the location. Digha is overcrowded throughout the year, and the peace-loving people love Mandarmani Beach. Digha is the most preferred holiday destination. It’s known as “West Bengal’s Goa.”

The beach remains, and visitors enjoy city-like amenity options for shelter, food, and shopping. Tourists who prefer calmness over amenities should choose Mandarmani above Digha.

Mandarmani Beach offers serenity and is not overcrowded. Fewer amenities are available to visitors, and options for eating, lodging, and shopping are limited. The beach is almost a virgin beach, and it’s a luxurious place.

Digha Beach Kolkata Timings

Located at a distance of 187 kilometers from Kolkata, the city of Joy, in the Eastern Indian state of West Bengal in India, Digha is a small yet popular beach town on the southern border. Digha beach is a flat beach and is one of the widest sea beaches in the world. It is the best weekend getaway destination for locals and its proximity to the Odisha border also means people from Odisha living close to the border town can hop in here during the weekend.

One of the unique features of Digha is that the beach is lined by casuarina plantations all around making the place more alluring. Surprisingly, there aren’t any coconut trees around Digha beach. Since the beach is shallow and flat for around one mile, it makes a safe option for visitors to take a dip or go swimming in the ocean waters.

History about Digha Beach

It was the Britishers who discovered the tiny beach town during the late 18th century at the time when Warren Hastings was the Governor of Bengal. Hastings was so smitten by the beauty and serenity of the place that he had referred Digha beach to ‘Brighton of the East’ in one of his letters to his wife.

Later, around 1923, when the English tourist John Frank Smith decided to settle in Digha after being charmed by the place, he started promoting it through his articles that he had published about this place. That’s how, the quaint beach town, which was known as Beerkul originally, became the quick getaway option for local tourists. It was John Frank Smith who persuaded the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy to develop Digha as a beach resort town.

About Digha Beach

Old Digha Beach : The old Digha Beach is located 2 kilometers from the Digha Railway Station in East Midnapore district of West Bengal. The old Digha beach is famous for the sunrise and sunset views. When in Digha, it is a must to visit the Digha Beach market and you would find numerous souvenir shopping options from home décor items to fashion accessories to clothes, bags, jewelry made out of sea shells and all kinds of sea stones.

Regarding the food, Digha has got enough options for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians, restaurants offer delicacies ranging from fast food to local authentic cuisine to multi cuisine.

New Digha Beach : The New Digha Beach is an extension of the Old Digha Beach, created artificially, and is located at a distance of 2 kilometers from Old Beach. The sands of New Digha are soft sands and it is recommended to visit the beach before 9:00 PM for your own safety.

Because of its proximity to the old beach, you may simply walk to the New Digha Beach from the Old Digha beach. This beach is less crowded than old beach, has easy accessibility and larger expanse and is hence preferred by most visitors looking for a secluded and more peaceful place.

Other places to visit in digha.

1. Shankarpur Beach : Known as the virgin beach, Shankarpur beach is located around 15 kilometers from Digha with a few temples and a park at the beach side for locals to come for day picnics. Since fishing is the main livelihood in the area, you would see quite a few fishing boats lined by the beach.

Visitors can climb up to the nearby watchtower to get a 360 degree view of the place.

2. Udaipur Beach : A pristine yet laid back and serene beach in Digha, the Udaipur Beach is favorite among travelers who look for lonely stretches of seashore just to themselves for enjoying long walks or taking a dip in the ocean waters without having to worry about the crowd. The Udaipur beach is located 3 kilometers from Old Digha railway station, between New Digha and Talasari Beaches, on the border of Odisha. This beach too, is dotted with casuarina trees and gives a feel of accommodation at a private beach due to its location.

Since this is a public beach, there are makeshift food stalls available near the beach. These stalls are usually set up by local fishermen who cook their catch of the day and sell the fish. There are boat rides, camel, and horse rides available. Water sports like banana rides, speed boats and All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV) are also available. The ATV rides cost between INR 50 to 70 for a 3-kilometer ride.

There are accommodation facilities available here too. Tourist huts are run by West Bengal Tourism and OCEANA Tourist Complex separately. There is a parking facility available by the beach. The parking fee is INR 40.

The only flipside of this beach is that it is quite dirty when the tides are low.

3. Talasari Beach : Known to be the last beach of North-eastern coast of India, Talasari beach is located 5- 6 kilometers from Digha, in the Baleswar district of Odisha. The beach is famous for being quaint, squeaky clean, and serene which is inhabited by sand dunes and calm waves. The beach is dotted with palm trees, coconut trees and cashew plantations.

The name Talasari literally translates to rhythm of the palm trees where, ‘Tala’ means palm tree and ‘Sari’ means rhythm. It indicates the rhythm formed by the golden sands and green trees with an occasional dash of red in between formed due to the red crabs which are found in abundance here.

An interesting fact about Talasari Beach is that in addition to being a sea beach, it is also a riverbank for the Subornorekha River which merges into the Bay of Bengal at Talasari. Talasari Beach is known for its fresh seafood.

4. Chandaneshwar Temple : Located in the Baleswar district of neighboring state of Odisha, the Chandaneshwar temple is located near Talasari beach at a distance of 5 – 6 kilometers from Digha. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and sees huge footfall during the occasion of Pana Sankranti, which is also called the Chaitra Mela, which is the first day of the Oriya New Year.

5. Chandpur Beach : Chandpur beach is also one of the beaches that is very rarely visited by tourists and thus makes a great option to visit and experience the peacefulness and serenity of the place. Located around 18 kilometers from Digha, the Chandpur beach is different from the other beaches due to its eroded banks and due to the recession caused by the seawater gradually, in the course of the past few years.

Please note that there aren’t any food stalls near the beach hence, you will need to carry your own food if you wish to spend a full day on the beach. It is recommended to spend at least two hours to experience the place.

5. Amarabati Park : The Amarabati Park is situated less than one kilometer from the New Digha Beach and is famous for its sprawling lush green lawns lined with seasonal flower plants and a lake, giving a wonderland-like look to the park. There is a ropeway ride that pans across the length of the park and one can enjoy the view of the New Digha region and get a bird’s eye view of the park below.

There are boating facilities in the lake by the park. The boating charges are INR 60 per person for a 25-minute boat ride.

6. Digha Science Center : Housing a mini Jurassic Park that resembles the original to the T, the Digha Science Centre was established by National Council of Science Museums with an intention to make science fun through interactive learning experience.

The sound and light show at the 3D theater is an amazing experience to explore the prehistoric Jurassic park. These interactive sessions pique the curiosity of kids and learners and make them urge for more information and they would want to learn how things actually work. There are intergalactic stories to view at the planetarium.

The Digha Science Center is a must visit place for families and kids.

7. Marine Aquarium and Research Centre (MARC) : The Marine Aquarium and Research Centre (MARC) as it is famously known is also the regional center for Zoological Survey of India and is maintained and run by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. Known to be the largest in-built aquarium in Asia, MARC was opened for public access in February 2016 and is located right opposite the Digha hospital. There are 24 huge sized marine tanks, and 8 fresh water tanks equipped with compressed air supply, and light in addition to the water inflow and outflow being regulated in frequent intervals.

The marine species housed here include sea anemones, sharks, rays, lobsters, sea snakes, sea horses, horseshoe crabs, butterfly fish, and a lot many others. There are posters all around the center to raise awareness to conserve marine biodiversity, environment concerns, and explain the necessity for the same.

Students interested in pursuing a career in marine biology and oceanology should visit MARC.

8. Casuarina Forest : This option is for art lovers, photographers or couples who are looking for short escapades. Exploring the casuarina forests right by the beach is an awesome option to get to do something other than the usual tourist activities like water sports and adventure sports.

The casuarina forests are a haven for photographers as it would give a perfect setting for beach and forest.

Best time to visit Digha Beach

The best time to visit Digha Beach would be during winter months, between November and March when the weather is pleasant with a bit of chill in the air.

Monsoon visit, between July and September is recommended to be a moderately ideal time, however, since Digha has flat shore monsoon, it would still be a good time if you are a person who enjoys the rainy weather.

The weather in summer months is too hot and humid. It is not recommended to visit during these months since you might not be able to enjoy the beach during the day. It is just the evenings when the temperature dips a bit, and you might be able to take a stroll on the beach side.
