There’s no better place to start your Disney World adventure than at the iconic Magic Kingdom. Filled with classic Disney attractions, mouth-watering snacks, and loads of character meet-and-greets, Magic Kingdom offers a magical experience for all ages.

Begin your day with a visit to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, one of the most popular attractions in the park. As the day unfolds, make sure to check the wait times in the My Disney Experience app and take advantage of Disney Genie+ for the optimal experience.

Morning Attractions

As you step through the entrance gate of Magic Kingdom, the excitement begins! Head straight to Discovery Island and marvel at the park’s iconic Tree of Life. With the morning sun shining bright, take a spin on Tomorrowland classics like the PeopleMover and Astro Orbiter.

When you’re ready for a break from the heat, explore the incredible indoor shows at Magic Kingdom, such as Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Hall of Presidents, Country Bear Jamboree, and Carousel of Progress.

Remember, planning is key to making the most of your time at Magic Kingdom, so use Genie+ to buy Lightning Lanes and maximize your morning fun.

Afternoon Thrills

As the afternoon unfolds, don’t miss out on Magic Kingdom’s thrilling attractions like Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Experience the spine-tingling adventures of Haunted Mansion, soar away to Neverland on Peter Pan’s Flight, take a flight on Dumbo the Flying Elephant, and take a thrilling mine car ride on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Remember to stay cool and hydrated, and don’t forget to capture those magical moments with your favorite Disney pals.

Evening Entertainment

As the sun sets on your first day at Magic Kingdom, prepare to be dazzled by the evening entertainment. Character meet-and-greets, the spectacular Festival of Fantasy parade, the awe-inspiring Happily Ever After fireworks, and the magical Cinderella’s Royal Table are all waiting to enchant you.

Indulge in savory spring rolls, regular and specialty Dole whips, and corn dog nuggets with plastic cheese as you explore the park at night. The magic of Disney World comes alive at night, so be sure to soak in every unforgettable moment.

Day 2: Exploring Epcot

On Day 2, it’s time to journey into the realms of imagination and innovation at Epcot. With Future World’s exhilarating attractions and the World Showcase’s cultural experiences, Epcot offers a unique blend of entertainment and education for visitors of all ages.

From the breathtaking Soarin’ to the exhilarating Test Track, you’ll discover a world of excitement at every turn.

Future World Adventures

Epcot’s Future World is home to some of Disney World’s most thrilling attractions. Experience the adrenaline rush of Soarin’ Around the World, the high-speed action of Test Track, and the captivating journey of Spaceship Earth.

For the more daring, take on Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind – a thrilling backwards launch with 360-degree vehicle turns and a unique soundtrack that’s random every time you ride.

Be sure to make the most of your time in Future World by utilizing Genie+ to access Lightning Lanes for popular attractions.

World Showcase Exploration

The World Showcase at Epcot invites you to embark on a fascinating exploration of 11 pavilions representing different countries around the world. Be sure to experience Frozen Ever After in the Norway Pavilion, a thrilling family boat ride featuring your favorite characters from Frozen.

As you wander from pavilion to pavilion, take time to uncover the unique side exhibits and galleries that act as a mini self-guided tour through each country’s history and current culture. Don’t forget to indulge in a variety of delectable dining options, including the Rose & Crown Pub in the United Kingdom, La Crêperie de Paris in France, and Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar in Italy.

Nighttime Spectacular

Finish your day at Epcot with the mesmerizing nighttime show, Harmonious. This awe-inspiring performance combines global influences, incredible special effects, and breathtaking fireworks to create a truly unforgettable experience.

For the best views, head to the front of the World Showcase, between the Mexico and Canada Pavilions. As the night sky lights up with dazzling colors and classic Disney songs, you’ll be reminded of the magic that only Disney World can create.

Day 3: Animal Kingdom Safari

lion, mane, king

Day 3 takes you on an African safari adventure at Animal Kingdom, where you’ll encounter exotic animals, lush landscapes, and thrilling attractions. Start your day with a visit to Pandora – The World of Avatar, and then head to Kilimanjaro Safaris for an up-close encounter with the wildlife of the African savanna.

Experience the sights and sounds of the African savanna, and get a chance to see some of the most iconic animals in the world, including giraffes, elephants, zebras, and more. Enjoy the thrill of the thrill.

Pandora – The World of Avatar

Step into the breathtaking world of Pandora – The World of Avatar, where you’ll find two awe-inspiring attractions: the tranquil Na’vi River Journey and the exhilarating Flight of Passage. Be sure to take advantage of the a la carte selections for a Lightning Lane for Flight of Passage, as they’re not available with the regular Genie+ choices.

As you explore the bioluminescent landscape, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to another world.

African Safari

Next, embark on an unforgettable African Safari at Kilimanjaro Safaris. This 20-minute adventure takes you across an expansive savanna, where you’ll encounter a variety of incredible animals. The best time to experience Kilimanjaro Safaris is during a light rain, when many animals are most active.

After your safari, explore the walking trails such as the Maharajah Jungle Trek and the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail to see even more amazing animals up close.

Asia and Dinoland U.S.A.

Continue your adventure in Asia, where you’ll find thrilling rides like Expedition Everest and Kali River Rapids. Be prepared to get soaked on the exhilarating Kali River Rapids, or take on the heart-pounding Expedition Everest roller coaster for a different kind of thrill.

In Dinoland U.S.A., step back in time to experience the prehistoric world on the exciting Dinosaur ride. Animal Kingdom offers a unique blend of excitement and exploration that you won’t find in any other Disney park.

Day 4: Hollywood Studios Action

yoda, star wars, actionfigure

On Day 4, it’s time for some Hollywood Studios action. This action-packed park is home to Toy Story Land, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and classic attractions like the Tower of Terror and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.

Get ready for a day filled with excitement, adventure, and a touch of Hollywood magic.

Toy Story Land

Venture into the world of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and all your favorite Toy Story characters at Toy Story Land. Here, you’ll find two exciting rides: Toy Story Mania and the Slinky Dog Dash roller coaster. Be sure to arrive early and head straight for Slinky Dog Dash, as wait times can get quite intense.

Toy Story Land is a fantastic place for both kids and kids-at-heart, with larger-than-life decorations and plenty of photo opportunities.

Be sure to plan ahead and aim for the best ride-throughs, as this immersive land is incredibly popular.

Classic Attractions

Don’t forget to experience the classic attractions that make Hollywood Studios a must-visit park. Plunge into the Twilight Zone on the Tower of Terror, race through the streets of Los Angeles on the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and journey to a galaxy far, far away on Star Tours.

With so much action and adventure, Hollywood Studios is sure to leave you starstruck.

Day 5: Water Park Fun

girls, swimming, splashing

After four action-packed days, it’s time to unwind and enjoy a day of relaxation at one of Disney World’s water parks. With thrilling attractions, serene relaxation spots, and delicious dining options, a day at a water park is the perfect way to recharge before continuing your Disney World adventure.

Attractions and Slides

Whether you’re visiting Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach, you’ll find a variety of attractions and slides that cater to all ages and thrill levels. From family-style raft rides to adrenaline-pumping waterslides and wave pools, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Remember to follow safety guidelines and keep an eye on little ones, as water park attractions can sometimes be intense.

Relaxation Spots

When you’re ready for some downtime, Disney’s water parks offer a range of relaxation spots, such as hot tubs and spas. Find a comfortable lounge chair on a sandy beach or float along a lazy river, soaking in the sun and the soothing sounds of the water.

These serene spots provide the perfect opportunity to recharge and reflect on your Disney World adventure so far.

Dining Options

A day at a water park wouldn’t be complete without some delicious dining options. Both Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach offer a range of quick-service restaurants, snack stands, and even full-service dining options.

From classic theme park fare like burgers and hot dogs to more unique options like tropical-inspired dishes, there’s something to satisfy every craving.

Be sure to allow for some extra travel time, especially during peak hours, and remember to check the bus schedules in the Disney Experience app for the most up-to-date information.

The monorail system is another fantastic transportation option at Disney World, providing a unique and scenic way to travel between the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and select Disney Resort hotels. With three different routes to choose from, the monorail offers a convenient and enjoyable way to explore the resort.

In addition, the Skyliner gondola ride offers a thrilling bird’s-eye view of the resort as you soar between Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and several Disney Resort hotels. No matter which mode of transportation you choose, you’re sure to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

Are you ready to make magical memories at Disney World with your family? In this article, we will share valuable tips and tricks to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone. Drawing from my personal experience, I understand the challenges families face, such as the pressure to buy souvenirs, tired little ones, and sensory sensitivities.

My top Disney World for families tips : buy the Genie+ pass, rent a stroller on park (don’t bring yours), wear tennis shoes and bring bandaids, bring your own food in, avoid gift shops, and stay in a hotel with a pool.

By implementing strategies like finding quiet spots during fireworks, offering healthy hydration options, and bringing familiar food, you can make the most of your family adventure and create unforgettable moments at the Happiest Place on Earth.

Why Trust The Travel Fam

Can you believe there are Disney bloggers that have the audacity to publish tips for families… and they aren’t even PARENTS?! They’ve never taken a kid (nope, not even a baby goat) anywhere, and they’re tryna give you advice about kids at Disney?! 😆

We have first-hand experience visiting Disney World with our own mini monsters so we understand the challenges of traveling with young kids (and on a budget, at that!)

On top of that, we’re both former teachers with YEARS of field trips under our belts. (Meaning we’ve taken hundreds of kids to theme parks…. And we’ve never lost a single one 😉).

The Travel Fam’s Best Advice for Disney World

Ready to hear some top-notch tips for an epic Disney World trip? Based on our personal experience, we’ve got you covered!

🏆 First off, even if you don’t normally use a stroller at home, renting one at the park can be a total game-changer. It keeps the kiddos comfy and saves their little legs from tiring out.

🏆 Oh, and a word of caution: steer clear of those gift shops unless you want to leave with overpriced junk you never knew you needed.

🏆 And here’s a secret hack: splurge on the Genie+ pass to skip those long lines with the kids. Trust us, it’s worth it! (Listen, we’re cheap as hell and we still recommend it.)

🏆 Lastly, don’t forget to rock those comfy shoes for the whole family. Seriously, no crappy shoes allowed.

🏆 In case the above tip didn’t pan out – stash some band-aids for blister emergencies, ’cause you don’t want sore feet to ruin the magic. Get ready for a magical adventure!

The Top 8 Tips for Disney World for Parents with Little Kids

1. id your kids.

Make sure your children have some form of identification on them, such as an ID bracelet or a card with your contact information, in case you get separated.

We bought apple tags with little wrist band watches for our kids when we traveled through Europe.

2. Have a plan if you get separated

Establish a meeting point or teach your kids to find a Cast Member (Disney employee) if they can’t find you.

3. Rent a stroller at the park

Even if you don’t typically use one, renting a stroller at the park can provide comfort and convenience for tired little legs.

This was the BEST decision we made. We tried to tough it out for half a day and our son (4) was a mess by lunchtime. We rented a stroller and it changed everything. The next day we went, we started off with the double stroller so our daughter (then 6) could hop in and out when she got tired, too.

4. Use Balloons to Mark Your Stroller

Tie a distinctive balloon to your rented stroller to easily spot it in crowded stroller parking areas.

5. Use Rider Switch

Take advantage of the Rider Switch program, which allows one parent to wait with a child while the other rides, and then switch without waiting in line again.

6. Don’t Buy the Park Hopper Tickets

Consider skipping the Park Hopper option to save money and focus on fully exploring one park per day.

7. DO Buy the Genie+ Pass

Invest in the Genie+ Pass to enjoy shorter wait times and skip lines for select attractions, maximizing your time and enjoyment at the parks.

I was too cheap to buy the Genie+ Pass on Christmas Day (because I’m an idiot) and it honestly kind of ruined the trip. We should have saved our money and just stayed home because we only got to ride one ride.

8. Put Little Kids on Your Phone at the Haunted Mansion (And Skip the Scary Intro):

Keep the little ones entertained by letting them play games or watch videos on your phone during the spooky intro of the Haunted Mansion attraction.

I had my 4-year-old watching some crap on my phone during the whole Haunted House ride- which felt kind of lame at first – but then I was thankful because we got stuck for several minutes right in the middle of the “door hallway” with all the pounding doors and he definitely would have lost his sh!t if he wasn’t engrossed in Cocomelon!

Budget-Minded Suggestions for Disney World

9. stay on park.

Consider staying in accommodations outside the park, such as nearby hotels or vacation rentals, to save on lodging expenses.

Although you *may* be able to save a buck or two by staying off park, it all evens out because of transportation costs. And honestly, the value hotels at Disney are often cheaper than any surrounding hotel.

10. Bring Your Own Food

Pack snacks and meals to bring into the park, as outside food is allowed. This can save you money and cater to any dietary preferences or restrictions.

11. You Don’t Need a Travel Agent

Planning your Disney World trip on your own is absolutely doable, thanks to the abundance of online resources and tools available.

12. You Don’t Need a Rental Car

Disney World provides complimentary transportation within its property, including buses, monorails, and boats, making it unnecessary to rent a car.

When you add up how much it costs to park the car at the parks ($25+ a day) it doesn’t make sense when you can just take free transportation. Just take an uber to your resort from the airport and don’t bother with a car until you fly home.

13. Skip Memory Maker

Consider skipping the Memory Maker package, which allows you to purchase professional photos taken by Disney’s PhotoPass photographers, and instead use your own camera or smartphone to capture memories.

Posing for PhotoPass photographers means MORE WAITING IN LINES. And what do you want to do less of when you have kids? Waiting in lines!

14. Buy Your Merchandise Outside Walt Disney World

Explore nearby outlets, discount stores, or online options for Disney merchandise, as they often offer better prices compared to the merchandise inside the park.

I’ve heard that the Goodwills in Orlando are FULL of cool Disney stuff. Your kids will never know the difference.

More Money Saving Advice for Disney World Food

15. skip the dining plan.

Evaluate whether the Disney Dining Plan is cost-effective for your family’s eating habits and preferences, as it may not always provide the best value.

16. Order from the Kids Menu

Consider ordering from the kids’ menu for smaller portions and potentially lower prices, especially if your appetite isn’t as big as an adult portion.

Unless you’re at a nice sit-down restaurant, no one is going to care if you order off the kids’ menu.

17. Split a meal with your kid

At a sit-down restaurant, and can’t order off the kid menu without being awkward? Just split the meal with your kid. “He’s just going to eat off of my plate” are words I’ve frequently uttered. My poor son has never had his own meal in his life.

18. Get a Full Pizza

Opt for a full pizza instead of individual slices to get better value for your money, especially if you have a larger group to feed.

When my brother and I were teens, we literally just ordered a full pizza at Disney every day of our trip and split it.

19. Download the My Disney Experience App

You will want the app to order food to-go, which is sometimes the only reasonable thing to do when you’ve got littles with you.

Download the My Disney Experience app to access park maps, wait times, FastPass (now Disney Genie+) options, dining reservations, and more right at your fingertips.

Me and Darcey in front of dinosaur ride at disney

Technology at Disney World

20. read up on genie+ and lightning lanes.

Familiarize yourself with the new Genie+ system and Lightning Lanes to understand how to maximize your ride experiences and reduce wait times.

21. Set Up a My Disney Experience Account

Create a My Disney Experience account before your trip to manage your reservations, FastPasses (now Disney Genie+), and dining plans all in one place.

22. Find Characters with the MDE App

Use the My Disney Experience app to locate your favorite characters, check their availability, and plan meet-and-greet opportunities throughout the park.

Logistical Suggestions for Disney World

23. know your transportation options.

Familiarize yourself with the various transportation options at Disney World, such as buses, monorails, boats, and the Skyliner, to efficiently navigate between parks and resorts.

We were able to skip the intense crowds of the monorail on Christmas day by taking the ferry to the Magic Kingdom instead!

24. Take Advantage of Early Theme Park Entry

If staying at a Disney World resort hotel, make use of the Early Theme Park Entry benefit to access the parks before regular opening hours and enjoy shorter lines.

25. Take Advantage of Extended Evening Hours

Similarly, leverage the Extended Evening Hours offered to resort hotel guests on select days, allowing you to enjoy the parks with fewer crowds during extended operating hours.

Ronan skipping into Hollywood Studios Disney

Disney World Convenience

26. stay at a disney hotel.

Consider staying at a Disney resort hotel to enjoy benefits such as proximity to the parks, complimentary transportation, access to Extra Magic Hours, and the convenience of charging purchases to your room.

The extra buck or two you’ll save by staying off park just gets lost when you end up paying for parking. We always stay at a value resort on park and it’s never much more than all but the cheapest hotels off park.

27. Use Package Pickup

Although this beloved service has yet to make a return since the evils of 2020, hopefully it’s on its way soon! Then you’ll be able to take advantage of the Package Pickup service available at the parks, which allows you to have your purchases sent to a central location for pick up later, so you don’t have to carry them around all day.

Well-Loved Advice for Disney World Vacations

28. mobile order.

Save time by using the Mobile Order feature on the My Disney Experience app to pre-order your meals and snacks from select quick-service restaurants, allowing you to skip the line and pick up your food when it’s ready.

29. Don’t Pay for Water

Save money by requesting a cup of ice water from any quick-service restaurant instead of buying bottled water , as it’s complimentary and readily available.

You won’t ever catch me without my security water bottle.

30. Utilize Single Rider Lines

If you don’t mind being separated from your party, take advantage of Single Rider Lines for certain attractions, which can significantly reduce your wait time.

When we traveled with my dad, he was able to jump into a single rider lane for Mount Everest because the rest of us don’t ride rollercoasters. The kids and I can just take an ice-cream break while we wait.

Darcey's first trip to Disney

Things to-do at Disney World That Just Make Sense

31. learn about special events at the parks.

Stay informed about special events happening at the parks, such as seasonal festivals, parades, and fireworks shows, so you can plan your visit accordingly and catch these memorable experiences.

It was just recently that I learned about RunDisney races… Reference this post to make sure you don’t accidentally visit during an overcrowded event!

32. Learn About Rides and Entertainment

Familiarize yourself with the attractions, shows, and entertainment options at each park by studying park maps and schedules. This will help you prioritize your must-see experiences and make the most of your time.

We spend a significant amount of time watching the ride walkthroughs on Youtube before our trips to Disney. This allows the kids to familiarize themselves with the rides so they know how “scary” or “intense” something is.

33. Know Your Limits

Pace yourself and be mindful of your family’s energy levels. Take breaks, find shady spots to rest, and listen to your body to avoid exhaustion and burnout during your visit.

34. Book Advance Dining Reservations

Secure dining reservations in advance, especially for popular table-service restaurants, to ensure you have options for meals and avoid long wait times.

This is almost mandatory anymore, but especially so during the hoildays. You don’t make a reservation, you don’t eat!

35. Bring an Insulated Thermos for Ice Water

Carry a reusable insulated thermos or water bottle to keep your water cool throughout the day, as staying hydrated is crucial in the Florida heat.

Time Worn Advice for Disney World

36. plan for rope drop.

Arrive at the park early and take advantage of “rope drop,” which is the official opening time. This allows you to enter the park before the crowds and experience popular attractions with shorter wait times.

It really does make a difference when you’re the first ones inside the park. My son and I were able to ride Goofy’s rollercoaster 4 times before there was a line at all – and this was during the holiday season!

37. Know How Much to Tip at Disney World

Table-service dining expectations are no different than anywhere else in the U.S., so you should definitely budget to tip at least 20%. The general rule of thumb for “mousekeeping” is a couple of bucks a day.

Even though we’re by no means wealthy (yet!), we’ve made it our personal goal to tip at least 25%, 30% for a great experience. This is just a small way we practice gratitude for being able to dine out with our family while so many service workers struggle to make ends meet.

38. Hop on a Ride at Park Close

Consider riding an attraction right before park closing time, as the lines tend to be shorter during this period. Take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy an additional ride and make the most of your day.

Tough Love for Your Disney World Vacation

39. bite the bullet and get genie+.

Consider purchasing the Genie+ service, which allows you to skip the regular lines for select attractions and maximize your time in the parks. While it involves an additional cost, it can significantly reduce wait times and enhance your overall Disney World experience.

I learned the hard way that upgrading to Genie+ makes ALL the difference. It sucks because you want to be able to have a great experience without upgrading (because tickets are so expensive on their own!) but it made a HUGE difference in our experience when we did. There was almost no point in going without Genie+.

40. Set Your Budget

Determine your budget for your Disney World trip and plan your expenses accordingly. Consider factors such as tickets, accommodations, dining, transportation, and souvenirs. Setting a budget helps you make informed decisions and avoid overspending during your visit.

When You Want to Take it Easy

41. skip water parks at disney.

If you’re looking to save time and prioritize the main theme parks, consider skipping the water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. While they offer fun water attractions, visiting them may take away valuable time from exploring the iconic Disney World attractions.

42. Take a Midday Break

Plan for a midday break to rest and recharge. Take advantage of the afternoon lull in crowds and head back to your hotel or find a quiet spot in the park to relax. This downtime will help you and your family stay refreshed and energized for the rest of the day.

Our champion routine consists of an early morning at the parks, then a quiet lunch, swim, and a nap back at the hotel before heading back to the park in the evening.

43. Know What to Skip

Prioritize the attractions, shows, and experiences that are most important to you and your family. While it’s tempting to try to do everything, accepting that it’s impossible and focusing on your must-do activities will allow for a more enjoyable and less hectic experience.

44. Schedule a Break Day

Consider including a day in your itinerary for relaxation and exploration outside of the theme parks. Explore Disney Springs, enjoy resort amenities, or venture out to other Orlando attractions. This break day provides a chance to unwind and adds flexibility to your Disney World vacation.

Trust me, the kids will be just as happy to play in the pool while you recover for a day.

Realistic Advice for Disney World

45. pack the right things (duh).

Make sure to pack essential items such as comfortable clothing, sunscreen, hats, ponchos, and comfortable shoes to ensure a pleasant experience at Disney World.

46. Pack Less and Do Laundry

Consider packing lighter and utilizing laundry facilities at your hotel or resort. This allows you to bring fewer clothes and ensures you’ll have fresh attire throughout your trip.

I like to pack quick-dry clothes for summer vacations because, if anything, you can rinse stuff out in the sink and hang dry it in the shower.

47. Bring a Portable Fan

Florida can get hot and humid, so bringing a portable fan can provide some relief during the warmer days while waiting in lines or exploring the parks.

48. Give Each Disney Park at Least One Full Day

To fully immerse yourself in the magic of each Disney park, allocate at least one full day for each park. This will give you ample time to explore all the attractions, shows, and experiences without feeling rushed.

49. Book a Split Stay

Consider splitting your stay between different Disney resorts to experience different themes, amenities, and locations. This can add variety to your vacation and allow you to enjoy the unique offerings of multiple resorts.

50. Visit Disney Springs

Make time to visit Disney Springs, a vibrant entertainment and shopping district. Explore its wide range of dining options, shops, live entertainment, and even catch a movie or enjoy a hot air balloon ride.

Dealing with Crowds

51. ride attractions during fireworks.

Take advantage of shorter wait times for attractions during firework shows. While many guests gather to watch the fireworks, lines for rides tend to be shorter, allowing you to enjoy more attractions with less wait time.

52. Avoid Holidays

To minimize crowds and maximize your enjoyment, try to avoid visiting Disney World during popular holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s, and Thanksgiving. These times tend to be busier and may result in longer wait times and larger crowds.

53. Bring Headphones for Kids with Sensory Issues

If your child has sensory issues or is sensitive to loud noises, bringing headphones or noise-canceling earphones can help create a more comfortable experience for them, especially during loud shows or attractions.

Planning Ahead for Your Disney Trip

54. buy park tickets in advance.

Save time and avoid long lines by purchasing your park tickets in advance. This allows you to skip the ticket booths and head straight to the park entrance, maximizing your time in the parks.

55. Avoid School Vacations

To minimize crowds, consider planning your visit during non-school vacation periods. Avoiding popular school break times, such as spring break and summer vacation, can help you experience shorter wait times and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Health and Wellness at Disney World

56. don’t forget trip insurance.

Protect your investment and have peace of mind by considering trip insurance. It can provide coverage for unexpected events or emergencies that may disrupt your travel plans.

I’ve spent a day in a sketchy Florida emergency room and don’t to repeat the experience.

57. Wear Tennis Shoes

Opt for comfortable and supportive footwear, such as broken-in tennis shoes, to keep your feet happy during long days of walking and standing in the parks.

58. Bring Bandaids

Be prepared for minor cuts or blisters by packing a supply of bandaids. They can come in handy for any unexpected boo-boos during your Disney World adventure.

59. Bring Tummy Medicine

Just in case you or your family members experience any tummy troubles, it’s a good idea to have some over-the-counter tummy medicine on hand. This can help alleviate any discomfort and keep your vacation on track.

The Ultimate Guide to Planning a Disney Vacation With the Entire Family

disney fam trips

Preparing for a big family vacation to Disney World — with grandparents, siblings and children in tow — can be very different from a typical Disney trip. Sure, you’re still visiting Fantasyland, riding Spaceship Earth and exploring Animal Kingdom, but the circumstances have changed: You’ll need to rethink the basics to make the most of your visit.

Knowing when to stay together, when to split up, and what nighttime entertainment is right for everyone are key to ensuring the group doesn’t get stuck in the lunchtime rush or spinning on tot-sized rides for hours. You’ll need to prep for more than just getting that big family photo by Cinderella Castle, which is why we’ve tackled every logistical issue you may encounter.

Here’s how to book the right hotels for large families, plan the best itinerary for big groups and tackle The Most Magical Place On Earth together without breaking a sweat.

1. Favor efficiency over a free ride.

Disney offers complimentary bus, ferry boat and monorail transportation, but lugging a full group’s worth of sweaters, strollers and snacks is burdensome, so larger parties may appreciate the comfort and ease of parking their own vehicle ($20 per day) at the theme parks.

If you’re staying on-property, consider splurging on Disney’s new “Minnie Van” ride-share program, which is booked via Lyft’s app. A $20 flat-rate for kid-friendly polka dot vans is costlier than standard rides, but worth it for complimentary car seats and drop-offs at the Magic Kingdom’s front gate — something no car, cab or Uber has permission to do.

2. Plan the perfect compromise.

Spontaneity is near-impossible to pull off at Walt Disney World, so keep everyone happy by splitting each day into three portions and only planning two. This way, a full day of Magic Kingdom reviere can be paired with a calmer evening, an afternoon spent poolside will reinvigorate young ones for nighttime fireworks and that much-anticipated dinner reservation won’t be spoiled by sun-sapped exhaustion.

3. Don’t be afraid to divide and conquer.

Whether you’re juggling kids of different ages or three generations of energy levels, remember: you’re only as efficient as your group’s slowest member. Split up whenever necessary to ensure thrill-seekers can soar among the stars while speed-averse riders take refuge on low-key attractions without forcing either out of their comfort zone for the sake of sticking together.

Same goes for entertainment. Plan one night at Disney's Hollywood Studios, whose two evening shows — a standing-room only Star Wars fireworks presentation and seated Mickey Mouse-helmed Fantasmic! — are ideal for pleasing both aspiring Padawans and classic Disney lovers without either having to exit the park.

4. But know which experiences are better together.

Easy-pleasing wonders like Soarin’ Around The World and Kilimanjaro Safaris are great for families of all ages and ride tolerances, while Splash Mountain’s mid-plunge ride photo is a must-have souvenir for larger parties. Opt for the Broadway-inspired “Festival of the Lion King” over “Finding Nemo - The Musical,” which skews younger, and aim for full-group photos with Disney characters that are indoors, where scenic backdrops offer more depth.

5. Stay with all the comforts of home.

When it comes to big families traveling together, standard hotel rooms don't cut it. Consider one of Walt Disney World’s incredible villa-style rooms, which come with full kitchens, laundry machines, wide balconies, separate bedrooms (and bathrooms!) ideal for giving couples or in-laws their privacy.

Standard Disney rooms have a maximum of four occupants, so if your family consists of five or six, opt for a family suite at Disney’s Art of Animation or All-Star Music resorts. Prefer adjoining rooms? The newly renovated Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin hotels, which are walking distance to Epcot, offer discounted pricing specifically for connecting rooms.

6. Make mealtimes a breeze.

Feed everyone speedily by pre-selecting your order through the Mobile Ordering feature on the My Disney Experience app. Choose every burger, salad and yes, even Dole Whip while waiting in line for Jungle Cruise or driving over to the park, and when you feel like chowing, tap the “I’m Here, Prepare My Order” button. Your food will come out in minutes, all without having to wait in line.

If you’d rather dine family-style, there are multiple buffet-style restaurants across property, but a few quick-service restaurants quietly offer large-scale dishes ideal for bigger groups. Satu’li Canteen in the new Pandora — The World of Avatar section of Animal Kingdom serves the entire menu as a “sample platter” come dinnertime, while Polite Pig at Disney Springs combines its delectable ribs, smoked chicken and pork shoulder on sharable butcher boards.

7. Handle everyone’s reservations with ease.

The trickiest part of any Disney trip is managing the daily FastPass+ ride reservations , especially for multiple families traveling as one. It’s easier to split up reservations than winging it while waiting in standby lines, so resist the urge to book everything together — just ensure there’s always an adult to escort young riders.

To keep track of every reservation, consider sending a screenshot of the daily schedule to a group text message or, for extra convenience, do as the experts do and save it as your phone screensaver.

8. Don't forget adult time.

Wrangling kids is never easy, and you’ll all have earned a break — without the littles — by the vacation’s end. Disney operates four children’s activity centers at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, Beach Club Resort, Polynesian Village Resort and the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel that are open each evening for child care, as well as in-room sitting through a third-party child services company.

Take a night without the kids to ride anything you may have missed, enjoy Epcot’s globe-spanning cuisine, and toast amidst Disney Springs’ plentiful nightlife.

Fun and Festivities on a Walt Disney World FAM

Written by: Michelle on December 04, 2018

disney fam trips

There is a lot to remember when planning a Walt Disney World vacation. By taking courses in the online College of Disney Knowledge and attending FAM trips to the parks, agents will learn the ins and outs of booking their clients’ dream vacation.

Holly Peck, one of our Agent Support team members, spent a few days at Disney World in Orlando last month as part of the Walt Disney World Agent Education Program. While there, she had the chance to stay in Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and tour several other resort properties, including the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Disney’s Yacht Club, the Art of Animation Resort, the All-Star Movies Resort, the Holiday Inn Orlando Disney Springs, the DoubleTree, the Four Seasons, and the Grand Cypress resort.

Choosing the right resort is one of the most important decisions when planning a client’s Walt Disney World vacation. That’s why the chance to see so many of these properties and attend educational sessions about what each one has to offer is so valuable to agents. This firsthand knowledge allows them to answer client questions and offer the best resort recommendations for their clients’ needs.

disney fam trips

The education didn’t stop there! Holly and her fellow FAM-goers also attended educational sessions about Disney’s new ticketing structure and pilot programs, giving them the inside scoop for planning a Disney Vacation.

They also had the chance to see the construction of the new Disney Skyliner, a new ride to transport parkgoers between Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot as well as select resort properties. Agents also learned about Minnie Van Service , the Disney Springs area, Good Neighbor Hotels, and Gateway Hotels.

As an added treat, the group attended Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. This yearly event features entertainment including parades, holiday concerts, dance parties, character appearances, and even fireworks! Around the beautifully decorated Magic Kingdom, there are many holiday treats to enjoy at the event, like the Ugly Sweater Brownie and Scrooge McDuck Egg Nog Custard.

Transformed by festive decorations, displays, shows, treats, and special events, the parks are the perfect destination for your clients to spend some quality time together, this season and every season!

For agents, seeing the resorts, learning about upcoming attractions and additions, and attending seasonal events gives them the tools and confidence to be able to customize their clients’ Disney experience. They are a client’s number one resource for all things Disney, and clients can rest assured knowing their travel agent is up to date on the parks and events.

FAM Trips like this are a key way that agents gain insider knowledge, but agents can also stay up to date via the educational courses offered on Disney’s Travel Agent website , emails, and webinars offered by Disney and KHM Travel Group . Holly and the others on the Agent Support team are also a valuable resource for any questions our agents have about Disney. We love helping our agents learn and supporting them in their businesses.

If you are interested in becoming a travel agent to help others experience their dream vacation, partnering with a host travel agency allows you the flexibility to work from home with the support, resources, and education of the KHM Travel Group team of experts. One of the biggest roadblocks for families when planning a Disney vacation is the high cost. But believe it or not, it is possible to pull off a Walt Disney World vacation on a budget .

Here are some money-saving tips to help you save at the Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Pick the right Walt Disney World Resort hotel

Among the biggest line items when budgeting for a Disney World trip is neither the theme park tickets nor the airfare — it’s the hotel prices.

There are more than 25 Disney-owned hotels at Disney World. According to Disney price tracking site Touring Plans, rooms run as low as $128 per night at the affordable Disney All-Star properties, but that’s assuming you book during the low season. In reality, prices run much higher.

NerdWallet analyzed hotel room rates throughout 2023 across the three tiers Disney uses to classify its hotels to better understand how much Walt Disney World hotel rooms actually cost. Here’s that breakdown:

The best Disney World hotels for families

The best Disney World hotels for families vary based on needs (e.g., proximity to certain parks, theming, amenities and affordability).

Disney's All-Star Music Resort offers the best budget-friendly option for family suites at Disney World. Rooms sleep up to six adults and include one queen bed and two queen-size pull-down beds, plus two full bathrooms and a kitchenette with coffee maker and microwave.

The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort are also among the best Disney World hotels for families. They accommodate up to six adults and include a bunk bed. Their large size can make them ideal for a multigenerational family trip . Plus, the cabins are also pet-friendly , allowing up to two dogs per room (for an additional fee).

While more expensive, there are two resorts that stand out as great for families (and that could save you money in the end): Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Polynesian Village Resort. Both have monorail stations, providing easy Magic Kingdom access (which can mean savings on parking or rideshare). Both properties recently underwent renovations that added more Disney character touches.

In 2021, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort reopened with furnishings and fixtures inspired by “Moana,” and the retro-modern Disney’s Contemporary Resort’s refurbishment brought in characters from Pixar Animation Studios’ "The Incredibles" films.

The benefits of staying at Disney-owned hotels for families

While booking a cheap hotel down the street from Disney might be tempting, booking a Disney-owned hotel can pay off for families. Besides the immersive Disney theming and proximity to parks, some money or time-saving benefits of Disney World hotels include:

Easier mass transportation: Buses take guests between hotels and theme parks. Depending on the route, unique transit methods include boats, monorails or an aerial gondola called the Disney Skyliner.

Free parking: Theme park parking is free during your stay, which might be useful for families needing their own car seat (otherwise daily parking rates start at $25).

Early theme park entry: Disney hotel guests can enter theme parks 30 minutes before everyone else (park admission is required), which might help avoid paying extra for line-skipping privileges.

Extended evening hours: On select nights and at some parks, guests at Disney’s Deluxe Resort Hotels or Deluxe Villas are entitled to stick around longer (typically two hours past the standard closing time), which can mean fewer crowds and more time to take advantage of theme park tickets.

Book Disney Good Neighbor Hotels

That said, there is a middle ground that might provide the best of both worlds: the aforementioned benefits with a lower price point that comes when you don’t have the Disney name attached.

Disney officially recognizes dozens of hotels in Orlando as Good Neighbor Hotels, and they rank among the best family hotels near Disney World. They’re typically cheaper than Disney-owned hotels and they often offer other cost savings such as breakfast, kitchenettes or pet-friendly rooms. Most also provide park shuttles, enabling you to skip the rental car . Plus, Disney Good Neighbor Hotel benefits sometimes mirror what actual Disney hotel guests get, including early theme park entry.

Many can be booked on points and miles , ideal if you’ve been stockpiling credit card rewards .

Some of the best family resorts outside Disney World in the ‘Good Neighbor’ category are within walking distance of actual Disney property, bordering Disney Springs.

Disney Springs-area hotels bookable on loyalty points include:

Hilton Honors:

DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Orlando .

Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace .

Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista .

IHG One Rewards:

Holiday Inn Orlando .

Wyndham Rewards:

Wyndham Garden Lake Buena Vista .

Wyndham Lake Buena Vista .

Avoid eating in the park

Disney explicitly states that guests can bring outside food and nonalcoholic beverages into the parks, with just a few stipulations (such as no glass containers).

Plan on packing snacks to keep in your bag and enjoy throughout the day, and bring a water bottle to refill at drinking fountains. If your hotel offers free breakfast (many Good Neighbor Hotels do), take advantage. This will save you money and help you avoid wasting time once in the park.

Choose the best ticket option for your family (which probably isn’t Park Hopper)

There are two types of Disney Parks tickets : The 1-Park Per Day ticket, which, as the name suggests, allows entrance to one park a day, and the Park Hopper ticket, which allows entrance into multiple parks each day.

Park Hopper tickets are far more expensive — potentially hundreds of dollars more per day for families. And they’re probably not worth it.

If you absolutely must visit all four of the Walt Disney World theme parks but you don’t have four days on your vacation, then the Park Hopper might be inevitable. But if you’re there for multiple days, save by visiting one park per day. The best way to do Disney World is by focusing on one park at a time, anyway.

At Disney World, the theme parks are spread out so park hopping means you end up wasting time commuting between the parks, rather than actually in them.

» Learn more: The best ways to buy Disney tickets

Consider Disney World family vacation packages

Good Neighbor Hotels sometimes have Disney World family packages. Offers vary, but they often entail freebies like meals or parking. Many hotels are also willing to bundle in discount Disney tickets.

disney fam trips

By purchasing Disney tickets through the hotel, travelers paying with a corresponding hotel-branded credit card might be able to seize the opportunity to earn bonus hotel points by purchasing park tickets through hotel Disney family vacation packages.

Buy Disney gift cards at Target

Disney gift cards can be used at almost all locations inside Walt Disney World for dining, Disney-owned hotels, park tickets and souvenirs.

If you sign up for a Target REDcard™ Credit Card , you can save 5% on Disney gift cards and other eligible specialty gift cards.

Pack the essentials

Stopping at a convenience store or shopping on Amazon before your visit can help you save money while in the parks. Think spur-of-the-moment purchases such as rain ponchos, fans/water misters, sunscreen and other weather-related items. These will likely cost you more at the parks, so it’s best to come prepared.

Buy souvenirs in advance

If you have kids, buy that princess dress at a cheaper retailer before your visit. Buy glow sticks in advance so that you can hand them to the kids when they beg for the light-up toys sold before nighttime shows. You can also find a wide variety of cute (and affordable) mouse ears on websites like Etsy. As for Disney shirts, you can find reasonable prices for those at stores like Walmart and Target.

Cut back on theme park days with other free Disney activities

Free or cheap activities outside the Disney parks let you avoid buying theme park tickets for every day of the trip. It’s easy to spend time window shopping and taking in live music at Disney Springs or at Disney’s BoardWalk — both outdoor entertainment complexes. Bask in free rides on the Disney Skyliner or any of Disney’s boats or monorails.

Visit other Orlando attractions

Orlando is packed with free and affordable family-friendly attractions. Options include the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens, Boxi Park (an outdoor entertainment complex made from repurposed shipping containers) and Old Town (a shopping district with amusement park rides of its own). If you’re attached to visiting a major theme park, consider Universal Studios .

Travel Agent FAM Trips: What They Are + How to Find Them

Ahhhh.... the travel industry. It's a beautiful industry and one we here at HAR are lucky enough to work/play in! One of the greatest perks in travel are travel agent familiarization trips, or FAM trips for short. They're also sometimes called FAM tours.

Here's the thing, people outside the industry usually have two conflicting thoughts about travel agents:

1) When they find out I work with travel advisors they ask if travel agents still exist.

2) Then they immediately think I'm a travel advisor and ask, " Do you get to travel a lot? For free?!? "

Here's the answers to those questions:

1) Ooooooh, my friend, travel agents sure do exist! In 2022, traditional travel agencies market share was 21% and online travel agencies was 22% ? True story. Here's more on a travel agent career outlook .

2) And yes, as a producing travel advisor you get to travel a lot and sometimes for free or at a significant discount. Producing is the key word here. :)

What I can never figure out is how you can think travel agents aren't around if they get to travel all the time to gorgeous destinations for free or reduced costs. 🤔 Wouldn't the market be flooded with people wanting to become a travel agent if that was the case?!

Jumping off waterfall on mexico familiarization trip

These enviable trips are called FAM trips and they're key to travel advisors being invaluable resources to their clients.

(For those of you dying for some 'me time' on the beach, don't worry, FAM trip is short for familiarization trip. It DOES NOT mean you have to bring your family with you on the trips. 😂 In fact, if +1s are allowed, it is often at a little higher cost but often FAM trips are just for advisors.)

So let me break down what a FAM trip is, what happens on FAM tours, where you can find FAM trips, and the question I know you all are asking, how you can get invited on a familiarization trip!

What is a FAM trip for travel agents?

A travel agent FAM trip is a trip offered by a vendor, destination or another entity in the travel industry

Jamaica travel agent FAM tour

Let's clarify one thing. A FAM trip is not the same as travel agent discounts on personal travel. For that, you can check out our article with over 200+ travel agent rates we lovingly keep updated for you. :)

A travel agent FAM trip is a trip offered by a vendor, destination or another entity in the travel industry—like an industry association, a host agency or a travel consortium to travel advisors—allowing the travel agent to experience the product/destination so that they can better sell it.

Travel advisors are salespeople at their core and like any salesperson, they can sell more when they experience the product or service.

Vendors and destinations know that travel agent FAM tours are a cost-effective way to increase sales. All the pics the travel agents post while on FAM trips are darn good PR and advertising!

I'll tell you a secret: once you become a travel agent and start connecting with industry colleagues

a) you will get out of offices all. the. time. from colleagues traveling to awesome places and

b) your social feed will be crammed full of pics from your industry besties traveling around the world. :)

What are the different types of familiarization (FAM) trips?

Those social feeds crammed with enviable travel photos I just mentioned? Well, they are meant to be marketing the destination/property/etc. So you should definitely be feeling FOMO and jealousy.

BUT! That could literally be the only hour the advisor was able to enjoy the pool or beach during their 3-day familiarization trip. Like most things on social, the reality of a FAM trip is often much different than what the photos painted.

Let's break down FAM tours into a few categories so you have a better idea of what to expect.

And for the record, I just created these categories since I really feel like we need to differentiate them so please help me grow this industry lexicon and start throwing them around in industry forums! 😂

Vatnajokull Glacier, Lagoon, ATV Excursion travel agent familiarization trip

Working FAM trips

These FAM trips are exactly what they sound like. Working FAMs are the majority of familiarization trips and they are meant to maximize your time in the destination.

This means that you're often up at 6 am, on your feet all day visiting multiple properties (called site inspections ) or having in-destination experiences like a pasta-making class or white water rafting.

After a full day of action, you sit down for your dinner and do some serious networking. You don't hit the bed until 10 or 11 pm. FAM trips are tons of fun, but they are also tiring! It's like traveling with your ADHD friend that is inexhaustible. :)

The company or destination that organized the FAM trip wants you to see and experience as much as possible so you often have a jam-packed schedule from sun up to past sundown.

EXPERIENTIAL FAM trips

Experiential FAM trips are still working familiarization trips but have a more relaxed schedule, as in you won't be touring 4 resorts in Jamaica a day and then have evening activities. :)

You might be staying at a dude ranch and each day have an activity or two planned.

Or you might have attended a travel conference and signed on for the pre/post tours where you get to do a guided activity each day and then return to your hotel at night.

Experiential FAM tours are my favorite FAMs because they're easier to remember more vividly. Plus, I don't come away completely overstimulated and sleep deprived!

Iceland lagoon travel agent FAM tour

AWARD FAM TRIPS

When your agency starts really producing, award FAM trips will open up for you.

Simply put, they're awards trips for top producing travel agencies but they also function as a FAM because they may include visiting a few properties. Plus, when most people think of FAM trips, they're wondering about free or discounted tours and award FAM trips fall into that category.

On award FAM trips, the host really pulls out the stops so you can experience all the host and the destination have to offer

On award FAM trips, the host really pulls out the stops so you can experience all the host and the destination have to offer! After all, these are the agencies that bring in a lot of sales.

Award FAM trips are typically fully comped and the familiarization trip host will have all sorts of great things planned for you! It's a lot of networking and fun, and less work. :)

What happens on a travel agent FAM trip?

Your itinerary will vary based on the type of travel agent FAM trip you're on. As I mentioned earlier, working FAMs have jam packed schedules!

If I were to generalize, I would say that on a FAM tour expect to be wined and dined at different properties or restaurants. You'll tour various properties where you'll see different room categories as well as meet with key staff that will allow you to better serve your clients.

When it comes to cruise ships, cruise FAM trips are often called Seminars at Sea when you get to sail on the ship and ship inspections when you tour it while it's in port.

Travel Agent Fam trip Ship inspection

And equally as important on FAM tours is the networking and bonding that happens with your host and fellow travel colleagues. Most advisors have their family and then they have their 'travel family', which are the colleagues they get to travel around the world with. As we all know, travel bonds people like nothing else!

Cruise FAM trips are often called Seminars at Sea when you get to sail on the ship and ship inspections when you tour it while it's in port.

Travel agent FAM trip technology + FAM trip marketing

You'll take tons of pictures and videos to share with clients and use for marketing. You'll also take a lot of notes. How do you keep all that FAM trip info straight? Here's a few resources for you.

Fam with Intention has a paid course on what to do before, during and after your travel agent FAM tour to make sure you maximize the experience.

Keeping track of everything you see and do, as well as the people you meet on travel agent FAM trips is challenging. HAR has free ship inspection forms as well as free site inspection forms that can help you out. They're old school PDF but can't beat free!

And if you are looking for something way more snazzy in app form (paid), check out MyFamTrip or FamGuru .

How much do travel agent FAMs cost?

travel agent fam trip white water rafting

I wish I had a specific answer for you but travel agent FAM prices will vary from completely free (sometimes referred to as hosted, as in they're 100% hosting you) to a decent discount.

Here's what you can generally expect included on a travel agent FAM trip:

  • Excursions/Activities

What's usually not included on travel agent FAM tours:

  • Tips for your drivers, bellhops, guides, housekeeping, etc. (These people work incredibly hard and depend on tips so make sure to bring cash.)
  • Your travel insurance (never included)

Where can I find a list of travel agent FAM trips?

Great question! Here are a few places you can find FAM trips listed.

HAR's INDUSTRy calendar

We have a great list of FAM trips on HAR's free travel industry event calendar that you can check out.

Often times travel industry conferences in popular tourist destinations will offer pre/post-add-ons that allow you to experience the destination at a discounted rates.

FAM-SPEcific websites

Other online places to find travel agent FAMs are destination-specific websites like:

  • MexicoFamTrips.com
  • CaribbeanFamTrips.com
  • JamaicaFamTrips.com

There are also a few websites that list travel agent FAM trips like :

  • Famtrips.travel
  • FAMrates.com (paid subscription)
  • WanderfullyFammed , which are led by an advisor/photographer and part of the trip is that she provides all the marketing content for advisors to promote it during and after.

But here's another secret, the real travel agent FAM deals that are generously subsidized are not publicized. They are invite-only FAM trips or require you to apply, where the competition is stiff.

Ireland Castle on travel agent familiarization tour

Travel Consortium + Host AgencY FAM TRIPS

Your host agency and/or consortium are one of the places where you can find the generously subsidized FAM trips.

Only members of their networks have access to these FAM trips and there may be sales or other requirements you need to meet. They may send out an email with the opportunity or they may reach out to advisors they know would be a good fit for it so that's another reason to cultivate those relationships with your host and consortium!

DESTINATIONS and vendors FAM TourS FOR TRAVEL AGENTS

Another place where you can find severely discounted travel agent FAM trips is through destinations and preferred suppliers like cruise lines, tour operators, destination management companies (DMCs), and resorts.

\When you sign up as an advisor with them that gets you into their database and you'll receive information on upcoming travel agent FAM opportunities.

These FAM trips may be emailed out to the entire database and you have to apply, or it may be that the organization reaches out individually to their ideal travel advisors. Again, build those relationships at travel industry events so you're top of mind. :)

travel agent ship inspection FAM trip lunch

How the heck can I get invited on a travel agent FAM trip?!?

Love your enthusiasm!

Let's back up a step because the first requirement is that you're a travel agent. If you aren't one but think it would be a cool career (it totally is), check out our article with more info on how to start your travel agency .

The next requirement hurdle is you'll need to be a producing advisor.

On rare occasions, new advisors without a history of sales can be invited on a travel agent FAM trip, but you'd have to show you have the potential to bring in sales. This is usually done by showing your network of friends/colleagues/clients as the target demographic for that particular FAM trip.

Another option for newbies is you can show that you are serious and focused on selling that particular brand/destination/trip type. Do this by reaching out to your BDM (business development manager) and writing up an in-depth sales plan on what you'll do to bring them sales.

Other than that, each FAM will have its own requirements which they'll communicate to you.

travel agent familiarization (fam) trip scuba diving

You now are fully educated on one of the best travel industry secrets... travel agent FAM trips! I hope you can experience one soon as they're amazing experiences. :)

If you're an advisor that landed on this article, I would LOVE to have you share any FAM experiences or advice in the comments below!

Want to Qualify for a Cruise FAM or Be Invited to an Inaugural Event? Here's How

multiple cruise ships in port

Photo: Shutterstock.com

You don't have to have sailed on a cruise line to sell it. But having experience on different cruise lines does make matching up clients with the right line easier. Cruise lines understand this and offer familiarization (FAM) trips and discounted rates (often called FAM rates) to incentivize advisors to experience their products. FAMs and special events – like ship namings and inaugural sailings – are also used to reward advisors for their loyalty.

New entrants to the travel advisor industry might assume that only the highest producing advisors have access to these FAM trips or get invitations to inaugural events. And while high-producing advisors do get invites, they're not the only ones.

In no particular order, here are the most common ways travel advisors can qualify for FAM rates, FAM trips and inaugural events.

Seminars at Sea Seminars at Sea are a hybrid of a traditional FAM combined with a multi-day workshop. Most cruise lines offer at least one Seminar at Sea each year. Additionally, CLIA has been known to offer Seminars at Sea.

Seminars at Sea can be invite only, as with Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean, or first-come, first-serve as with Celebrity Cruises. Most cruise lines will list available Seminars at Sea in their calendar of events in their travel advisor portal. You can also ask your BDM if such an opportunity exists.

Graduation Perk Several cruise lines reward advisor graduates of their educational programs with FAM rates or even free cruises.

"When you graduate from Celebrity Learning, we put you on a cruise," Dondra Ritzenthaler, senior vice president of sales, the Americas, for Celebrity Cruises, told TMR.

Princess does the same, a spokesperson said. "After becoming a Commodore through our Princess Academy, travel advisors can earn one free graduation cruise as a culmination of the online learning."

Being a top graduate of a cruise line's educational program can also help qualify advisors for something like an inaugural event.

"It helps if the advisor has reached Commodore level via Princess Academy," a Princess spokesperson told TMR. "We do give preference to those who have taken the time to learn about and understand our product."

At Holland America, advisors must have completed the four core courses of the HAL Academy to even be eligible for any type of FAM opportunity.

Active Partnership By far the most successful way to receive an invitation for a FAM or inaugural event is to be an active partner with the cruise line.

Having a relationship with your business development manager and working with that person on a marketing plan or event, those are actions that tell a cruise line you're in it for more than just a free trip.

"We do not have a threshold of sales that are required to attend a FAM or an inaugural event," a spokesperson for Holland America told TMR. "They are available to any advisors that are working with our account managers to build a plan for growing their Holland America Line business."

Be a Top Producer While you don't have to be a top producer to qualify for a FAM, it certainly doesn't hurt. But where top producers do tend to have an edge is with inaugural events.

For instance, at Celebrity Cruise lines, the top producers get automatic invitations to pre-inaugural events like ship namings. In most cases, these top producers are massive host agencies or franchise companies. These companies then decide who among their executives and members will go.

"If you're the top producer – we announce five a quarter in each region – you become an Iconic Advisor Club member and you automatically get an invite to the pre-inaugurals," Ritzenthaler said, adding that such a member, say Cruise Planners as an example, might get 10 invitations for the next pre-inaugural event. Same goes for the home-based account of the year or consortia account of the year.

Being a top producer within your own host agency or consortia, therefore, can help you qualify for one of those invitations, depending on how your host/franchise/consortia distributes them.

Aiming for being a top producer in your geographical region is another way of increasing your chances of getting an invitation to an inaugural event. According to Ritzenthaler, each regional sales manager gets a limited number of invites to distribute as well. These typically go to individual agencies (versus the larger host, franchise, consortia groups).

"When we have a pre-inaugural, we'll say that each region gets a certain number and then the regional director will say to his or her sales managers each gets this many [invites]," Ritzenthaler explained. "They will then go to their top producers, but a lot of the time, those top producers already got invited from all these other ways, so they go down to the next level."

Attend Industry Events Industry events, whether it's your host, consortia or franchise's annual conference, association conferences (like CLIA's Cruise360) or publisher-led conferences (like Travel Market Place) are great for education and networking.

But they're also an opportunity to win FAM trips, with some cruise lines giving away multiple free cruises (we've even been at shows where every advisor in attendance got a free cruise).

Finding a FAM Whether you're looking for a FAM rate or a FAM trip, most cruise lines will list upcoming opportunities on their advisor portals or send alerts via email.

For instance, Royal Caribbean sends emails to travel advisors with "friends and family" rates every week.

At Celebrity travel advisors can find FAM rates listed the advisor portal for close-in sailings the line wants to fill up, usually two to three weeks before departure.

"Open FAMs will be listed on OneSource.com and your Holland America Line account manager will also be sharing FAM opportunities, as they are releases," a HAL spokesperson told TMR. "To ensure you are seeing FAM dates, work with your account manager to create a sales strategy and express your interest in first-hand onboard experience, as part of that plan. All applicants will be approved by their sales manager to be confirmed on a FAM departure."

Agree with Silly. Stroller & stroller fan! & not just for the baby I used the stroller to carry all of our food, drinks, bags, & stuff we brought at the park more than the baby.

Idk if the genie pass would be worth it if you’re planning on staying with kiddos. Check out ride selections. We didn’t get them for everyone because some of my kiddos are young and it just didn’t make sense. Def use the app. And go early! You can usually ride a few rides with very short lines if you get there at open. Then it gets PACKED.

People might move stroller around while you are on the ride so put something on the stroller so you can easily identify it. But in a sea of giant strollers…. My smaller stroller was easier to find as well.

Also I did bring a rain cover for the stroller. During magic kingdom fireworks it started to POUR rain. Little guy was cozy and dry under the cover, he even fell asleep while grandma and I were drenched and waiting for it to stop so we could catch the bus. I had my poncho but was still pretty wet.

Genie pass was definitely a must. Little guy’s favorite ride was Slinky Dog Roller coaster and we never would been able to do that without lightening lane!

  • A Disney vacation for a family of four can cost thousands of dollars.
  • But travel experts told Insider there are ways to cut costs when booking a Disney trip.
  • Their tips include booking up to a year in advance and buying discounted gift cards.

When it comes to planning your dream Disney vacation, the best place to start is with a budget, Rachael Saldana, a Disney travel-planning expert at Allonsy Travel , told Insider.

But a trip to the happiest place on Earth doesn't come cheap. Insider reported in 2021 that the  average cost of a typical five-day trip to Disney World for a family of four at the time was $6,033. CNN reported in 2022 that while a one-day, one-park ticket was between $109 and $159, Magic Kingdom and Disney's Hollywood Studios anticipated to see more than a 12% increase by 2023.

A 2022 survey of Walt Disney World fans conducted by gambling website time2play found that 92.6% of those surveyed believed the cost of a Disney vacation was too expensive for the average family. Another 48.3% said they postponed trips to Disney World because of price increases in recent years.

While the price may still not be economically feasible for some families, four travel experts told Insider there are ways to cut back on the cost of a Disney vacation.

Here are six of their money-saving tips to help make the trip more affordable for families.

Be smart about when you go.

With so many people visiting the park, the best way to get the most bang for your buck is to go during windows when it's least expensive, has the smallest crowds, and ideal weather, according to Jill Knonenborg , who previously spoke to Insider about the best times to visit Disney .

While the cheapest times to go are often when school is underway — usually January after Martin Luther King Jr. Day through early February, and early June and late August between summer breaks — that won't be possible for families wanting to keep their kids in class.

During the summer break, early June is often the most cost effective, Peters said.

"I think especially for those families that really prioritize education and prioritize school, summer is a good time to go," she said. "The first week of June tends to be a less expensive time to go in the summer, and the heat isn't quite built up to what August would be."

Late August is also a cheaper time to visit, so that's another option for families whose kids return to class after Labor Day.

"That late August time is the second-cheapest time I have found with Disney World for this year," Amber Travis , a Missouri-based Disney travel agent with Mickey Travels , told Insider.

"Disney offers lower rates at that time to get people to go," she said.

But if you want to experience the Halloween decor and the early days of Christmas festivities without the chaotic crowds and crazy prices, September and early December are the best times to go.

Budget to pay for your Disney vacation over time.

Saldana said it's a $200 deposit to secure a Disney vacation package, but the remainder of the payment is not due until 30 days before you go.

"This makes it really easy to budget because you know how much your vacation's going to be, you know when you need to pay it, and you have — especially if you're booking for next December — more than 12 months to pay for it," she said.

Strategizing how much to save each week, automating your savings, or establishing a sinking fund are just some ways you can budget for a big trip , travel experts previously told Insider's Alene Laney.

Buy discounted gift cards in bulk to pay off your Disney vacation.

Travis suggests buying discounted gift cards in bulk and using them to pay off your Disney vacation.

Disney gift cards are essentially like any gift card: They carry funds that can go towards practically anything Disney at Disney destinations, from merchandise and theme-park tickets to dining and resort reservations.

Some stores sometimes sell them at a discounted price, like Sam's Club or BJ's, and other stores may offer gift cards as well, such as Target, Ralph's, Kroger, Walmart, Staples, and Best Buy.

At Sam's Club, for example, you can purchase $50 Disney gift cards for $47.98, saving up to 4%. (Only members can buy these discounted gift cards, and a membership costs $45.)

BJ's Wholesale offers Disney gift card deals where you don't need a specific credit card or membership to get the discounted gift cards. Instead, you can try out the membership with a free one-day pass . During those 24 hours, you can buy discounted Disney gift cards without purchasing a membership.

As of September 2023, the best deal available will save you up to 3% by buying a $100 BJ's Disney gift card that costs $96.99. If you use a credit card that earns rewards or provides cash back, the savings could be higher.

Book when hotel pricing is first released because it's the most economical.

Like much else when it comes to travel, the golden rule is: Book in advance. That also means coordinating your hotel stays early.

Saldana, who has a background in revenue management, worked at hotels handling dynamic pricing and figuring out hotel rates. She recommends being vigilant for when hotel pricing is first released and booking your stays around that time.

In the case of families looking to book for 2024, Disney released information indicating reservations could be made starting on May 31, 2023, as reported by WDW Magazine .

"When the rates are first released, they are the cheapest. The revenue managers just want to see what traction they get and where the demand dates are — and then they adjust based on that. So when pricing is first released, it's the most economical," she said.

SF Gate reported in October 2022 that visitors with just a month or two notice may be able to book at Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel or the Disneyland Hotel, especially during the slower months of late August and September.

However, to obtain the more popular options at Disney's Grand Californian Resort and Spa during more popular months that feature holidays like Halloween and Christmas, you should book at least six months in advance, experts told Insider.

Disney Cruise Line reveals its biggest trade competition

Agents can bag one of 36 fam trip places.

Disney Cruise Line is to run its largest fam trip ever in a bid to celebrate the launch of its summer 2024 itineraries.

Agents in the UK and Ireland have until April 14 to download the Magic Ahoy! app where they will answer daily questions and complete a series of training exercises.

Once complete, they will complete an ‘ultimate’ quiz to be in with a chance of winning one of 36 fam trip places on Disney Dream.

In order to enter, agents need to team up with a travel agent buddy and both need to be Magic Ahoy! Level 3 achievers.

The aim of the game is to collect as many Mickey Stamps as possible by completing challenges in order to climb up the leader board. Agents can also earn Mickey Stamps by making bookings.

Disney Cruise Line will be hosting a total of 100 agents on the September 3 departure for the northern Europe itinerary with Disney Dream.

Setting sail from Southampton, the seven-night cruise will visit the stunning Norwegian fjords that inspired Frozen; Copenhagen, home of the statue of The Little Mermaid; and other ports such as Amsterdam, Oslo and Mekjarvik (Stavanger, Norway).
