While widely accepted as heavy metal, the band’s sound has also been classified as nu-metal or alternative metal. Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Metallica, Pantera, Iron Maiden, and Soundgarden are commonly cited as influences.

Frontman Draiman credits real-life experiences as inspiration for most Disturbed’s song lyrics. The group is known for cryptic song lyrics. The band’s songs cover numerous themes, many of which concern topics such as heaven, hell, domestic abuse, suicide, relationships, and war.

Originally composed of vocalist Erich Awalt, guitarist Dan Donegan, drummer Mike Wengren, and bassist Steve “Fuzz” Kmak, the band was initially named Crawl (and subsequently, Brawl).

The group recorded an early demo tape, but shortly after its completion, singer Awalt left Brawl, and the remaining members advertised for a new front man. David Draiman was one of the only respondents to the band’s advertisements, but he proved a perfect match and was hired on the spot. In 1997, now settled on the name Disturbed, the band recorded a pair of demo tapes featuring the songs, “The Game,” “Down with the Sickness,” and “Stupify.”

The demos led the band to sign with Giant Records, which issued Disturbed's debut studio album “The Sickness” in 2000. Catapulting the band to heavy metal notoriety, the record peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200, selling over four million records.

In support of the record, Disturbed was invited to open for Marilyn Manson on his European tour, during which time Kmak was temporarily replaced by Marty O’Brien. To raise publicity and anticipation for its sophomore album, in June 2002, the band released the documentary DVD M.O.L. Three months later, Disturbed released its second studio album Believe, which debuted atop the Billboard 200, led by the single “Prayer.”

Following a tour on the 2003 Ozzfest alongside Chevelle, Taproot, and Ünloco, Disturbed began work on its third full-length release. Once again debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Ten Thousand Fists arrived in September 2005, spawning the singles “Stricken” and “Monster.” Marked by the introduction of guitar solos and more melodic themes, the album took the band in a hard rock direction, compounded on future releases.

In 2008 Disturbed issued its fourth full-length and third No. 1 album Indestructible. Led by the singles “This Moment” and “Inside the Fire,” the record charted in over 11 countries, further augmenting an international presence.

Later in 2008, the group released the live album Live & Indestructible and embarked on a European tour from London to Helsinki. Disturbed’s fifth studio album, Asylum, appeared in August 2010 at the top of the Billboard 200 and spawned singles like “Another Way to Die,” “The Animal,” and “Warrior.” Following the supporting tour, the band took an indefinite hiatus in October 2011, which ended with the release of its sixth studio album, Immortalized, in August 2015.

Disturbed returned to the studio in early 2018 to begin work on its first studio album in three years. Evolution was released on October 19, 2018. Before the album's release, the lead single, "Are You Ready," dropped on August 16, 2018. The second single, "A Reason to Fight," was released on September 21, 2018.

As part of the album's release, the band embarked on the Evolution World Tour in 2019. The band also headlined at Rockfest alongside Incubus and Godsmack, and joined Pop Evil and In This Moment for another extensive tour that summer.

Following its success in 2018 and 2019, the band announced a 31-day tour in 2020. Unfortunately, that tour was postponed and subsequently canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Disturbed returned to the stage in September 2021 as headliners of Louder Than Life, an annual rock and heavy metal music festival held in Louisville, Kentucky.

The upcoming album Divisive will drop on November 18, 2022. The title track was released on October 27, 2022. You can check out the official lyric video or listen to the song before the album's release. The song focuses on the divisive hyper-polarity in American politics and society.

Disturbed will perform at the rock festival Nova Rock in Nickelsdorf, Austria, on June 7, 2023. Other notable performing acts include Slipknot, Simple Plan, and Lorna Shore. Additional up-to-date information on Disturbed tour dates can be found on the band’s official website.

One of the most exciting aspects of Disturbed is the distinctive grinning face of the mascot, an entity known as The Guy. Generally portrayed as psychotic and manic, The Guy is the embodiment of the Archangel, the destroyer. At one point, before settling on the name The Guy, the mascot was referred to simply as a spirit of vengeance.

The Guy originated on the cover art for The Sickness and has since appeared on the covers of Ten Thousand Fists, Indestructible, Asylum, The Lost Children, and Immortalized. He has also appeared in various incarnations in official music videos for the band's songs.

To achieve the distinctive look of the mascot, an artist took an original image and distorted it three times to create an eerie, indistinct face. Over time, The Guy's appearance has evolved, appearing first as a rudimentary sketch with big teeth and a menacing grin and eventually morphing into a fully rendered cloaked and muscular figure.

The Guy is a complex character depicted to possess various superpowers, such as super-strength, flight, self-sustenance, and indestructibility. The mascot is an essential part of the fandom surrounding the band. The Guy is also a playable character in Iron Maiden's mobile game, Legacy of the Beast.

Live reviews

OOH-WAH-AH-AH-AH!! Chicago’s premier heavy metal band Disturbed are one of those bands that have to been seen live to fully appreciate what they’re all about. On record and, in particular, in the press, singer Mad Davey Draiman (as he’s unaffectionately known here in the UK, much to the singer’s dislike) and Disturbed’s brand of chugging nu-metal-esque alternative rock can come across as clumsy and silly.

But I have been a believer ever since I first saw them peddling their Believe album at Brixton Academy in 2002 (supported by the Darkness, would you believe!). On the stage, David Draiman’s vocals excel, whether furiously barking or hitting those high near-classical notes, and the power of those chugging riffs suddenly exude power like Pantera at their most accessible. The choruses of old favourties like ‘Voices’, ‘Stupify’, the insane ‘Down With The Sickness’ and ‘Prayer’ have aged better than you might imagine, and more recently they have delivered more ‘serious’, thrash metal-inspired songs like ‘Asylum’ and ‘Indestructible’, which took them to arenas in both the US and the UK.

The band are currently on hiatus, but I fully expect them to come back louder and more inspired than ever, as the metal world is a much less interesting place without the ramblings of Draiman and his cohorts; it took them leaving for us to realise it.

It’s not difficult, on the face of it, to understand quite why Disturbed have managed to carve out such a fervent cult following; their five records have straddled the line between alternative metal and hard rock quite intelligently, and have been laced with a humour and self-awareness that sets them apart form many of their contemporaries, in a scene where taking oneself too seriously remains an occupational hazard that’s commonly fallen foul of. Another key ingredient, though, has been their live shows; aggressive, noisy and often spectacular, Disturbed’s reputation on the circuit has been a crucial part of cementing their success. Frontman David Draiman is a force of nature on stage; he translates the vocal ferocity that he delivers on record to every aspect of his performance, bringing an irrepressible energy that challenges his bandmates to keep up with him, and acting as a conduit to the audience, too, feeding off of their fist-pumping throughout. That’s to say nothing of his vocal prowess, either; Draiman has one of the most impressive ranges in metal, but the fact that he can do his recorded performances justice whilst putting in such a vigorous shift is testament to the kind of showmanship that currently has Disturbed fans beginning to get a little anxious about the length of their current hiatus, one which they’d promised wouldn’t be permanent.

Incredible atmosphere and an incredible performance by Disturbed!! They (David) gave a beautiful speech about mental health awareness amidst the untimely passing of Keith Flint. I was moved to tears. Being united as an audience at a concert - particularly rock concerts in my opinion - is always a very special experience. To be so intimately connected to thousands of strangers for a few hours is a wonderful indescribable feeling. For those few hours, we are not alone, we are surrounded by like-minded individuals who are all there for the same reason; to support the artists and the music we love. Disturbed made this experience even more special through their performance. It was loud, it was passionate, and it was damn near perfect. The production value alone was off the charts. This was my first Disturbed concert and it definitely will not be my last. Special shoutout to Three Days Grace - they killed it like always. Three Days Grace will always hold a special place in my heart as a hometown band that I grew up with. They never disappoint! I can't wait to see both bands again!

Watched Disturbed on the 1st of 2 nights at The O2 Arena as support to Avenged Sevenfold.

Opening with the title track of their current album, Immortalized, they delivered a very polished and powerful set including tracks from most albums.

You could hear a pin drop when David Draiman and sung a gutsy rendition of the "Sound of Silence" and crowd interaction with their mobile phones for "The Light".

The crowd were loud and very passionate which I felt the band were, if not surprised but we're a little taken aback with. A proud moment to savour.

Finishing with their classic "Down with the Sickness" in which the floor area kicked into life with circle pits appearing all over the floor and the fans in the seats at least stood up for this song, even if it was Dave Draiman who requested them to do so.

As always, the question is did I enjoy it and would I see them again?

Yes and Yes. Disturbed seem to improve every time I see then. My hope is that the next time I do see them, it will be as the headliners of the show.

Absolutely brilliant!!!

First the bad points.

Ally Pally ventilation was non existent. Even without any limb movement everyone was sweating like a pig. Imagine what happened when some started to. External temperature was a healthy 13C, so no excuses accepted. Big fire effects made it even worse.

Sound quality was questionable. Seems to be slightly better when Skindread heated up the public, but later on distortion was pretty bad to my ears. And I'm about the voice and overal sound, not guitars...

Good points?

Everything else very smooth. Starting from massive, but well organised queue.

Gig itself very good. Skindread, maybe not my favourite, but live was perfect. One of the best supports I've ever seen.

Disturbed concert was as expected. Many old hits and songs from new album. Dave built great atmosphere from the beginning up to the big end.

David is an exceptional leader and advocates for humanity through his fans. Most great bands speak through their music. Very few bands speak out about their music. The band's pervasive refusal to ignore the demons of depression had a remarkable and lasting impression on me last night.

Where else can you have 10,000 individuals converge in common understanding around a piece of music? The band's gesture to bring up fans onstage as a family, speaks to their humility. The willingness for them to "GET UP" and raise their hands in the admission of their own personal struggles despite enormous success. We are not alone. The show was much more than just well-orchestrated musicians. It was a reminder that under the tapestry of individual notes, WE ARE ALL ONE. Stephen Kalyta

This concert had the best light show I have ever seen - and that's a resume of over 190 concerts for me. Every song had different lighting - some had red/blue, some had green/orange, and one song even had purple lights - I've never seen anyone use PURPLE lights.

The venue itself is amazing. I had my own seat so the concert was also comfortable.

Overall, the energy of the band was mesmerizing. Although there is only 4 of them on this enormous stage, their presence filled up the remaining space.

I loved Distrubed before, but after this experience they are definitely my favorite band of all time.

David is not only an amazing vocal, but an even better person. Thank you, David, my brother, for making the trip to Vienna worthwhile <3

You can not call yourself a true metalhead if you have not seen Disturbed live. Every show of theirs that I've seen has been mindblowing. David Draiman comes onstage in a straight jacket which is amazing. There were pyrotechnics, really cool videos playing in the background of the stage, and David's voice is perfection. So many bands these days simply go on stage, play their songs, and leave. Disturbed not only gets you and the entire audience pumped up, but they deliver one of the best live performances ever (and I've seen Metallica and Alice Cooper so I know good performances when I see one). Even if you're not a fan of metal shows, you really need to catch a Disturbed show as it will be unlike anything you've ever seen!

What a great night, excellent views from the disabled viewing platform. Skindred were as funny and metal as usual! Then came the mighty Disturbed, amazing background imagery, they always deliver! David in one of his most empathic moods, he's just found out about Ogie, Oy, Ogie, Oy, Ogie, Ogie, Ogie, Oy, Oy, Oy! He asked us to explain. Lots of British bands do it, have done for years! He said "I like that shit!"

Dan, John & Mike were all on form as was David. There isnt a vocalist that can do what he does, the way he does it! Amazing

Please come back soon.

They were so amazing. They made me feel so good and David had such good speeches between the songs. It made me feel energetic, nostalgic and also a bit sad when he told the truth about addictions and depression.

It was such an amazing experience I swear and I hope they’ll come back soon. I love their songs and I love them all.

Skindred was as well good. These guys have cool music and also lyrics. Benji knew how to control and interact with the crowd and make as well jokes. I liked so much their songs as well and I also hope they’ll come back soon.

Disturbed + Falling in Reverse Play First 2024 Show Together – Setlist + Video

As the 2024 touring schedule started to roll out, the pairing of Disturbed and Falling in Reverse  on the "Take Back Your Life" trek was among the most anticipated early-year tours, pairing up two of rock's biggest acts on a bill that is rounded out by one of rock's most promising newer bands, Plush .

The tour got underway Friday (Jan. 19), with the three bands taking over the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, Illinois.

In advance of the run, Plush dropped the new song " Hope It Hurts " off their upcoming EP Find the Beautiful . They gave the track its live debut during the tour's opening night, while also dropping in a cover of Heart's "Barracuda."

Falling in Reverse, who had a big 2023 thanks to the success of their singles "Watch the World Burn" and "Last Resort (Reimagined)," were next up, followed by headliners Disturbed who are continuing to support 2022's  Divisive . Disturbed gave "Don't Tell Me," which they initially performed with Ann Wilson, its live debut, with Moriah Formica taking on the Wilson vocal.

Disturbed ‘turns it up to 11′ at packed show in Evansville

E VANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Monday night, metal band Disturbed continued their “Take Back Your Life Tour” tour in Evansville at the Ford Center.

Many people from around the Tri-State and beyond came to see the bands, which also included opening acts Falling in Reverse and Plush.

Metal fans tonight talked about what it meant to come out and see the concert with their friends and family.

“My mom didn’t really get to have a lot of concerts growing up so now that she has a daughters who loves going, she gets to go to more. We have been concert buddies since I took her to see Def Leppard when you were, what I think you were seven maybe six or seven, so this is the best and there’s nothing like being in a live show, just nothing like it,” explains Erika Duko and Alexis Mitchell.

Disturbed’s next stop will be in Toledo, Ohio.

Take Back Your Life Tour with Breaking Benjamin & JINJER

DATE : July 29, 2023

TIMES : Gates open at 5pm. Music starts at 6:30pm.

PLEASE NOTE : There is a standing Pit at the front

Emerging out of Chicago at the turn of the century with an insidious, infectious, and inimitable vision without comparison, Disturbed have quietly dominated hard rock on their own terms. They make the kind of music that pushes you to hold on tighter, fight harder, and persevere forever. It’s why they’ve quietly claimed a place at the forefront of 21 st century rock with record-breaking success, sales of over 17 million-plus units, nearly 8 billion streams, and sold out shows around the globe.

The two-time Grammy® Award-nominated quartet have notched five consecutive #1 debuts on the Billboard Top 200, occupying rarified air alongside Metallica—the only other hard rock group to accomplish this feat. Since their influential 5x-platinum debut The Sickness in 2000, they have built a bulletproof catalog highlighted by a procession of smashes, including the platinum “Stupify,” “Inside The Fire,” and “Land of Confusion,” 2x-platinum “Stricken,” 6x-platinum “Down With The Sickness” and 7x-platinum “The Sound of Silence,” to name a few. The latter notably received a GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of “Best Rock Performance” as the band earned “Best Rock Artist” at the 2017 iHeartRadioMusic Awards. Still, Disturbed never stop, igniting their next chapter with their 2022 album Divisive featuring their 15 th #1 at Rock Radio “Hey You,” “Unstoppable” and more.

Tickets On Sale Here On Friday, February 10th At 10am Local Time

Support from theory of a deadman in canada and very special guests breaking benjamin & jinjer on select dates in the united states , eighth studio album, divisive, out now via reprise records.

Today, multi-platinum rock band Disturbed announce their 36-date Take Back Your Life summer 2023 North American tour which will kick off at Montreal’s Bell Centre on April 27th (full dates below). The tour, produced by Live Nation, will feature support from Theory of a Deadman in Canada and very special guests Breaking Benjamin & JINJER in select markets in the United States. The band’s Take Back Your Life Tour will be Disturbed’s first full tour since 2018 and tickets for all dates on this tour will go on sale here on Friday, Feb 10 th at 10am local time.

Disturbed’s eighth full-length album Divisive is out now via Reprise Records . Divisive pulls no punches as a precise, pummeling, and powerful hard rock opus. Over the last year, the quartet cut these ten tracks with producer Drew Fulk [Motionless In White, Lil Peep, Highly Suspect] in Nashville, TN. After Donegan shared initial ideas with the rest of the group, they locked in like never before with the groove as the backbone. Drummer Mike Wengren bolted down some of the strongest and boldest rhythms of their career punctuated by John Moyer ’s punchy bass. Together, the musicians collectively conjured the focus and fire of their seminal early output augmented by airtight songcraft and a heightened level of musical chemistry that could only be forged by years of writing and touring together. “Hey You,” the album’s first single, emerged as their 15 th #1 single at Rock Radio and retained that position for 3 weeks Their current single, Bad Man is currently in the top 10 on that chart. Divisive is available on all formats HERE .

Watch: DISTURBED Performs 'Don't Tell Me' Live For First Time With PLUSH's MORIAH FORMICA

DISTURBED kicked off the 2024 leg of its "Take Back Your Life" tour last night (Friday, January 19) at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, Illinois. The band's 21-song setlist included the live debut of the "Divisive" album track "Don't Tell Me" featuring a guest appearance by Moriah Formica of the opening band PLUSH . Fan-filmed video of the performance can be seen below.

Earlier this month, DISTURBED released the Matt Mahurin -directed music video for "Don't Tell Me" . The song, an epic emotionally charged duet with HEART 's Ann Wilson , marked the first time the band had included a guest feature on an LP.

Back in 2017, Formica was a contender on season 13 of "The Voice" . Her blind audition performance of "Crazy On You" by HEART got the attention of all four judges, ultimately earning her a coveted spot on Team Miley Cyrus.

"I chose to play HEART because it is classic rock," Formica said at the time. "One of the reasons why I decided to go on to 'The Voice' is because of the lack of true rock singers. Ann Wilson is one of my favorite vocalists."

Regarding how the collaboration with Wilson came about, DISTURBED drummer Mike Wengren told Terrie Carr of WDHA-FM 105.5 FM : "That was always supposed to be the 'power ballad,' per se. And as we were tracking it in the studio, David [ Draiman , DISTURBED singer] just threw out the idea, 'Hey, let's do a duet on this song.' We've tossed around the idea before, but there wasn't ever either the right material or the right time. So in this particular case, we kind of said, 'Well, who you've got in mind?' And he didn't even have a list; he just had one person, and that was Ann . It was a no-brainer. 'Hey, let's hit up Ann . Let's see if she'd be into it.' And she was on board right away; we didn't have to convince her."

Mike continued: "[ David and Ann ] sort of struck up a bit of a friendship, a little bit of a rapport. When [ DISTURBED cover version of] 'The Sound Of Silence' came out years back and had its success, she was one of many artists and celebrities that took it up themselves to go on Twitter and praise the song and praise our version of it, which we couldn't have been more honored. Iconic, legendary Ann Wilson thinks that we did a great job with a SIMON & GARFUNKEL cover. That's pretty incredible, a pretty great honor. So when we reached out to her, she was more than willing to jump on board. And she came in and she killed it … And she's super cool and down to earth too, and just incredibly talented. It's such an honor to have her be on our record. And to me, the blending of her voice and David 's voice, they really, really work so well together. I'm so proud of David and just so honored to have her a part of our record."

In September 2022, DISTURBED guitarist Dan Donegan , whose divorce inspired "Don't Tell Me" , told Meltdown of Detroit's WRIF radio station about the band's collaboration with Wilson : "Early in our career, we wanted to really establish ourselves without having any guests. We didn't really talk about it much, but just [felt], 'This is the band.' Not that we were ever against it, but this far along in our career… We're always pushing ourselves, trying to do stuff that's different musically. And there's so much talent out there and so many people we would love to do collaborations with now or later in our career.

" Ann Wilson had mentioned before — she tweeted about us before," he continued. "A few years back, somebody asked her in an interview or whatever if there's anything new out there, or newer , musically that she's heard that she's fan of, and she mentioned she really loved our version of 'The Sound Of Silence' . And that kind of opened the door to a social media friendship between her and David a bit. And then when we wrote this song, it just seemed like it would lend itself to Ann 's voice and then trying to see that merge between her and David 's voices together. She jumped on the opportunity. Immediately she responded, and we were, like, 'Holy shit. She just said yes to this.'"

Asked by Meltdown if "Don't Tell Me" is a more mellow track than the standard DISTURBED fare, Dan said: "I can't give it away, but their voices, it's like Fergie and Jesus — a little 'Step Brothers' [2008 movie] quote there… It was a pretty magical moment to be in the room and to hear the two of them harmonize together.

"We tracked David 's vocals in Nashville, and we wanted to make it easy and convenient for her, 'cause we were, like, she said yes, she's gonna do it," Donegan continued. "Let's make it as easy as possible on her.' We flew out to California to meet with her. We went into a studio out there for just a couple of hours, and she sang against David 's tracks. And he was there kind of going over the harmonies with her and stuff too. So it was kind of a really magical moment to see the two of them working on those harmonies together. It was pretty impressive. And she's such a pro, and she's so damn good. She's a legend. So it was pretty exciting. And it's not like she sits there and jumps on people's albums either, so we take that as a badge of honor to think that there's not many times where somebody as big a legend as she is that she would jump on any album. She doesn't have to, and she chose to be on this one. And she loves the track. And it just came together great."

Released in November 2022, "Divisive" was recorded earlier that year with producer Drew Fulk ( MOTIONLESS IN WHITE , LIL PEEP , HIGHLY SUSPECT ) in Nashville, Tennessee.

According to Billboard , "Divisive" sold 26,000 equivalent album units in its first week of release, with 22,000 units via album sales.

On the all-format Billboard 200 chart, "Divisive" debuted at No. 13.

DISTURBED has had five No. 1s on the all-genre chart, beginning with "Believe" in 2002.

SLIPKNOT announce "ONE NIGHT ONLY" show at tiny California club

Slipknot clown 2023 1600x900 steve thrasher , Steve Thrasher

Last week,  Slipknot  began teasing  a "ONE NIGHT ONLY" event that was being cryptically advertised on a billboard in the middle of the desert. Today (April 23rd), we know what the event will entail.

On their website, youcantkillme.com , the Iowa Nine have announced that they're playing a show at a 350-capacity venue called Pappy + Harriett's in Pioneertown, California — and it's happening this coming Thursday (April 25th)!!!

According to the Knot's website, tickets are just $9 per person and are limited to two per person, so naturally these will sell out extremely fast. Tickets go on sale today at 3 p.m. EST (12 p.m. PST) and you can try and get yours here .

Slipknot will be donating all of the show's proceeds to the Joshua Tree No Kill Shelter and BOYS & GIRLS CLUB of the Hi Desert.

Notably, this will be Slipknot's first show of 2024, as it's going down a couple days before they headline Sick New World fest on Saturday (April 27th). It's also the 'Knot's first show with their mysterious new drummer, who replaced Jay Weinberg after his departure from the band last November.

It goes without saying that this show will be fucking bonkers, and given that it's falling on the 25th anniversary of their self-titled album, we wouldn't be surprised if the band pull out some oldies. Stay tuned.

Is Saturday Night Live New Tonight, April 27?

Is Saturday Night Live new or a repeat tonight? Here's the lowdown on the host of the April 27 SNL , and whether it's a new episode.

disturbed tour tonight

Is Saturday Night Live new this week? Read on for everything you need to know about the April 27  SNL episode.

How to Watch

Watch Saturday Night Live  Saturdays at 11:30/10:30c on  NBC and next day on  Peacock .

It's hard to believe there's only a handful of episodes left before  SNL  wraps what's been an incredible Season 49 . The month of April alone has brought history-making, record-shattering installments so far.

On April 6,  Saturday Night Live legend Kristen Wiig returned as Host, and she was inducted into the Five-Timers Club  with help from Matt Damon, Martin Short , Paula Pell, Jon Hamm, and Wiig's former  SNL  castmates Fred Armisen and Will Forte.

And on April 13,  The Fall Guy star  Ryan Gosling  followed that up with an absolutely hysterical episode (we're still rewatching the " Beavis and Butt-head " sketch). Gosling's third stint pulled the show's highest ratings since Billie Eilish's 2021 double-duty ep as Host and Musical Guest.

So what does tonight have in store? Below, all the info on who's hosting this week's  SNL , and whether it's a repeat.

Review: Neil Young & Crazy Horse strike heart of gold at tour-opening San Diego concert

Neil Young performing at SDSU on April 24, 2024.

The concert began with an epic, 15-minute version of ‘Cortez The Killer’ that featured extra lyrics recently unearthed by Young. Guitarist-singer Micah Nelson, Willie’s son, very ably assumed the role in Crazy Horse of Nils Lofgren, now on tour with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.

When Neil Young sang “rock and roll will never die” near the conclusion of his tour-opening LOVE EARTH concert with Crazy Horse Wednesday in San Diego, you believed him.

Those words, from his 1978 song, “Hey Hey My My (Into the Black),” sounded like a defiant vow in the face of possible obsolescence 46 years ago. Now, they are a statement of fact from a proud maverick who sounds more committed than ever, even — or, rather, especially — at a time when rock is increasingly becoming a niche genre pushed aside by formulaic pop, hip-hop and dance-music.

At 78, Young remains a staunch keeper of the flame whose passion for music burns as bright as ever. If anyone thinks this veteran singer, songwriter and guitarist is ready to kick back in his old age, he and his band immediately and convincingly refuted such notions with their powerful, nearly two-hour performance at SDSU’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. (They are set to perform a second sold-out show at the same venue Thursday night.)

Young and his three-man band opened with “Cortez the Killer,” an epic number from their 1975 album, “Zuma.” But this was no sentimental journey down nostalgia lane, nor was it a tentative, shake-off-the-dust run through.

Their carefully calibrated version of “Cortez” built to a series of powerful climaxes Monday and lasted 15 minutes — nearly twice as long as the original on “Zuma.” The song began with an opening guitar jam that lasted 7 minutes before Young’s reedy vocals commenced. For good measure, near the conclusion of “Cortez,” he sang — for the first time anywhere in concert — a missing verse he recently came upon that had been cut from the 1975 recording.

The unearthed lyrics provided additional depth and a palpable sense of despair to Young’s tour de force song about Hernán Cortez, the bloody Spanish conqueror of Mexico’s Aztec Empire: I floated on the water / I ate that ocean wave / Two weeks after the slaughter / I was living in a cave / They came too late to get me / But there’s no one here to set me free / From this rocky grave / To that snowed-out ocean wave.

The next selection was the buoyant “Cinnamon Girl,” a choice cut from 1969’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,” the first album Young and Crazy Horse made together. It clocked in at a crisp three minutes.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse performed at the Open Air Theatre at San Diego State April 24, 2024.

The rest of the concert included several other extended jams, with “Down by the River” and “Love and Only Love” both clocking in at a glorious 16 minutes (but not lasting one second too long). Conversely, Young’s tender solo acoustic versions of “Comes a Time,” “Heart of Gold” and “Human Highway” were each delivered with admirable concision.

The manner in which he alternated between longer and shorter selections served as a master class on how to pace a concert to build momentum and achieve maximum dynamic tension and release.

The final encore was an eight-minute rendition of “My My Hey Hey (Into the Black),” whose line There’s more to the picture than meets the eye could be a synopsis of Young’s career and his dogged determination to do things his way, every time, no matter what the trends of the day may be.

At SDSU, Young and his longtime Crazy Horse compadres — bassist/singer Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina, both 80 — were focused and in sync from start to finish. They were joined by guitarist/singer Micah Nelson, 33, who on Monday had played a key role accompanying his father, Willie Nelson, at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.

Willie Nelson performs at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park on Monday, April 22, 2024.

Review: Willie Nelson’s San Diego concert defined, not defied, the passing of time. He turns 91 on April 29.

The American music-master and his band warmed up a damp, cool evening at The Shell. David Sanger, the drummer in opening act Asleep At The Wheel, took the ferry back to his family’s home in Coronado after the show.

April 23, 2024

Micah Nelson was performing in place of Crazy Horse charter member Nils Lofgren, who is now on tour in The E Street Band with his other longtime employer, Bruce Springsteen. Those are big shoes to fill, but Nelson was so in sync with Young you’d think they had been musical partners for decades.

The stage was bedecked with the giant, faux Fender guitar amplifiers, speaker cabinets and road cases Young and Crazy Horse used on their 1978 Rust Never Sleeps tour. There were no video screens on the stage, the better for the audience — which included basketball great Bill Walton and Las Vegas Raiders NFL team owner Mark Davis — to focus completely on the music at hand.

The SDSU concert — the start of Young and Crazy Horse’s first major tour together in a decade — came a year after Young’s mesmerizing solo concert here at The Shell. Wednesday’s performance was even more mesmerizing, in large part because of the musical empathy between the four musicians.

SAN DIEGO, CA - JULY 11: Neil Young performs at the Rady Shell on Tuesday, July 11, 2023. (K.C. Alfred / The San Diego Union-Tribune)

Review: Neil Young delivered singular San Diego solo concert by digging deep for new/old musical gold

The two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee performed his first San Diego solo concert in 31 years, mixing classics with deep, deep album cuts

July 12, 2023

When they locked into a groove, which was often, they seemed to be of one mind. And it’s difficult to think of any other rock band of any vintage that can gain as much traction from so many slow-paced songs.

With few exceptions, Young’s biting guitar solos contained a minimum of notes, but he made each one count, repeatedly going into a zone where feeling and intensity trump quantity. Or, to invoke the title of Young’s 1988 album: “This Note’s For You.”

Apart from a heartfelt spoken tribute to the late David Briggs — the producer of many of Young’s albums with (and without) Crazy Horse — Young’s comments to the audience were along the lines of: “Thank you” and “How ya doin’?”

Otherwise, he let his music speak for him, and it spoke volumes.
