10 Best Dive Sites and Locations in Bali for 2023

Alex Lowe

Written and Reviewed By

  • Divemaster Alex Lowe
  • Last Updated: September 27, 2023

If you are thinking about scuba diving in Bali, then you have probably already heard that it offers some of the best dive sites in the world.

Well, you’ve not heard wrong! Whether you are into large pelagics, rare macro critters, or vibrant coral reefs and warm tropical waters, diving in Bali is not to be missed!

Scuba Diving In Bali

Bali is extremely popular for scuba diving for many reasons; it’s cheap, it offers rare and unique species sightings, the top-side scenery is amazing, the culture fascinating, the beaches are pristine, and the list goes on.

From experienced divers to complete beginners, this is one of the top dive destinations in the world!

What can you expect from this Bali diving guide?

dive trip bali

We recognize that although everyone would love to visit a great dive destination like Bali, it can be a little daunting to plan your trip. Planning and organizing a big dive trip, far from home, and finding accurate information on where to dive, where to stay, what dive shops to use, what seasons to visit, costs, attractions you should see on land, safety information and more, makes it a bit stressful.

But it doesn’t have to be.

As fellow scuba travelers, we feel your pain when it comes to getting reliable information to organize our dive trips, so we have put together this guide to help you plan your Bali diving trip.

If you still have questions about scuba diving in Bali, feel free to ask them in the comments below, or shoot us an email!

Best Places To Dive In Bali

dive trip bali

Absolutely covered in the corals and bursting with an unbelievable variety of marine creatures, this is a highlight of almost every diver’s trip to Bali. With the depths ranging from just three meters all the way down to 28 meters, this is an excellent wreck for both experienced divers and beginners alike.

Tulamben diving also includes great sites like Drop Off, Coral Garden and more, that you don’t want to miss. This is a top spot for underwater photographers, not just for the epic structures of the Liberty wreck but also because of the rare macro critters that are frequently spotted throughout the sites here.

Be sure to combine diving Tulamben with Amed and Saraya, for a perfect trip!

Amed is on the northeast coast, with great dive sites just 10 minutes offshore, with plenty of dive centers to choose from. Scuba diving Amed is great on its own, but combining Tulamben and/or Saraya would make your trip even better. Amed is a sleepy little fishing village come diving hot spot – the laid back beach vibes here are hard not to fall in love with.

landscape of Amed coastline with Mt Agung

The sites around Amed are great places to find frogfish, nudibranchs, rhinopias, and more, and there are also man-made pyramids sheltering tons of cute critters, you should check out. Plus plenty of beautiful corals, huge schools of fish, reef sharks, and the occasional Thresher or even an elusive Mola can be spotted here.

Amed is a popular spot for underwater photographers due to the amount of world-class muck dive sites to be found. But there are also some great coral reefs excellent for beginners,  drift dives suitable for the more experienced, as well as easy access to some serious depth for tech divers.

Saraya is sandwiched between Amed and Tulamben and basically shares the same dive sites. So you can stay in a dive resort in the area, and be able to explore the sites of all three.  A site called Saraya Secret is considered by some to be the best muck/macro diving in Bali, and it is also popular to do a night dive here. So no matter who you dive with, ask about the Secret!

underwater sealife

Sanur is one of the most convenient dive locations in Bali, especially if you are staying anywhere near Kuta, Denpasar, Nusa Dua, or any of the other popular beach towns nearby. So if you just want to fit a quick dive or two whilst exploring the rest of Bali, this is a great place to do it. The man-made reef houses and shelters a ton of marine life, and is a great spot to take dive courses or shallow try or check dives.  Call the dive center ahead of time, as the diving in Sanur relies on the tide.

Although it’s probably the least exciting of the dive locations on our list, it’s worth noting that the dive centers in Sanur also offer day and overnight dive trips to pretty much all of the other dive destinations on this list. So it can be a great place to base yourself if you’re not a fan of changing locations every few days and want to see all the top dive spots.

In Pemuteran local communities and businesses, overseen by the Karang Lestari Foundation, came together to create the  largest ‘biorock’ reef site  on the planet, and it’s a great story.

Now you can dive on these colossal man-made reefs with excellent visibility and a mindblowing plethora of marine life.  The whole structure continues to grow as more sections are added over time, so go support the effort!

Vibrant coral reef full of various fish species

Lovina is pretty far out of the way of, well everything, and to be honest, the diving is pretty mediocre, leading many to wonder why it’s even on this list. But hey, some people want to explore something new!

Lovina is located on the northernmost shore of Bali, and maybe it’s somewhere you want to dive if you are already in the area diving around Pemuteran. One of the highlights of this area is going out dolphin spotting!

Pandang Bai

Padang Bai, isn’t that just the harbor for the Gili islands? You’re correct! Padang Bai is where you catch one of the fast boats to the Gilis. However, it’s also home to some awesome dive sites. Especially, if you’re into your macro.  Located halfway between Sanur and Amed, it’s also very accessible if you’re staying in the south of Bali.

In addition to some awesome muck diving, you’ll also find some gorgeous coral reefs and pretty interesting wrecks. You’ll find frogfish, morays, stonefish, nudibranchs, squid, rays, stargazers, and more. Most of the dives here are within sheltered bays with shore dive entries , so good for beginners or those who get seasick on boats easily!

Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida diving is some of the  best in Indonesia  and is probably the first place you should check out in Bali. With epic drift diving, super healthy corals, and bucket-list pelagics!

Be sure to check out  Manta Point , where you’ve got an almost guaranteed chance to encounter multiple  mantas  throughout the year. Or  Crystal Bay  where you’ve got the best opportunity to spot the elusive Mola Mola from July to November. It’s one of the few places in the entire world where you can spot these strange creatures.

Nusa Penida is the biggest of the three Nusa islands situated off the southeast tip of Bali. You can take a fast boat or ferry here and stay on the island. Or you can dive spots around Nusa Penida from the neighboring islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Cennigan or do a day trip with one of the dive centers in Sanur.

One thing that’s important to note is that the diving around Nusa Penida is better suited to experienced divers.  Underwater there can be strong currents and to have a chance to see the mola mola you’ll need to be advanced certified as these are commonly spotted below 18m.

That being said, Manta Point, is a shallow dive. With the main manta station located at around 8m so this sight, as well as nearby Manta Bay, is accessible to new divers. The surface conditions at Manta Point can be quite rough with big swells and choppy waves, especially in the high season aka windy season! So if you easily get seasick, we don’t recommend a trip to Manta Point!

Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is basically the same as Nusa Penida, and is a smaller island right next to it. That also means that it shares the epic dives of Penida! There are  manta  cleaning stations where you will see lots of mantas, and during the right season, you might just get lucky enough to see the giant mola mola, which should be on every diver’s bucket list!

Nusa Lembongan also has some awesome dive sites including the mangroves which are home to an impressive array of marine species, plus some seriously vibrant reefs and steep walls with adrenalin pumping currents! In addition to the mantas and mola mola you’ve also got a chance to spot some of the bigger shark species here including hammerheads,  whale sharks , and threshers.  They often spot dolphins around the Nusa islands too!

If you can’t tell already, the Nusa islands are arguably our favorite place to dive in Bali. We just can’t get enough of those big bucket-list creatures and the exhilarating drift dives!

The Black sands bay of Gilimanuk in the far corner of North West Bali offers some of the best muck diving in the country (and that’s impressive – Indonesia is one of the world’s best muck diving destinations!). So this spot is a macro underwater photographer’s dream. If you are making the 4-hour drive from Kuta, you won’t be disappointed.

A lot of great underwater documentaries were shot from Gilimanuk diving, so get ready to see nudibranchs, ornate ghost pipefish, hairy frogfish, mimics,  wunderpus, rhinopia, and more!

Menjangan is a protected marine park in the northwest corner of Bali. Unless you are planning on staying in the area, you will want to plan an overnight tour with a dive center in the south as it’s a 4-hour plus drive each way.

Best Time To Dive In Bali

The diving in Bali is good year-round.  Visibility is best during the dry season (between May and October). This is also when the visibility is best but the water temperatures do get a little cooler, especially between July and September, ranging from around  26°C  to 18°C. (The coolest spots are the Nusa islands as they are exposed to deep ocean currents which are also why there’s such epic marine life here!).

During the rainy season, November to March, the visibility is often reduced (on average 10 to 20 meters) but the water is much warmer and dive spots are much less crowded. January and February tend to be the worst months for diving in Bali, the rain brings quite a big of trash and sediment into the water from the rivers around Bali and further afield in Indonesia.

July and August are considered peak seasons in Bali for diving, so while the conditions are excellent, the sites will be busier.  Plus this is considered windy season so boat rides, especially around the Nusa islands, can be quite rough. Your best chance to spot Mola Mola in Bali is between July and October. Mantas can be spotted all year round.

For us, the best time to dive in Bali is the time between the seasons (April/May or Sept/Oct), where you get the perfect blend of conditions, and sites are significantly less crowded.

We get asked a lot of questions about diving or in Bali or Indonesia in general, so we put together a bunch of those questions and answers, to help you get all the information you need to plan your dream dive trip to Bali.

We try to cover everything in this guide, even it has nothing to do with scuba, but of course, I am sure we missed some topics.

So if you have a question about diving or traveling in Bali that we haven’t covered, just pop it in the comments and we’ll get back to you ASAP!

Frequently Asked Questions

The answer to this really just depends on what you are looking for. In our opinion, Bali and the Gili Islands each offer something totally different, both above and below water. In fact, we put together a guide just for diving in the Gilis.

If you are an underwater photographer, lover of rare and unique creatures, or want to explore a lot of incredible dive sites with tons of corals, head dive Bali.

For casual divers who just want an easy dive with no fuss about the long car or boat rides, and don’t mind if they mainly just see turtles, then head to one of the Gili Islands. Most sites are just minutes from the dive resorts, and are generally easy, relaxing dives. Bali is more for the incredible critter sitings, abundant coral reefs, and those bucket list pelagics.

In general, diving in Bali is a little cheaper than more remote locations in Indonesia (such as Raja Ampat), mostly because there are a lot of shops to choose from and the infrastructure is considerably more developed. And Indonesia will be cheaper than most western countries.

That said, although there are a ton of great dive operations, I wouldn’t recommend you just look for the cheapest one. It’s worth it to find a trustworthy shop, with a good safety record, gear, boats, guides etc. One popular and top-quality dive center is  Blue Corner  on Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. They also do Divemaster internships and conservation courses if you’re interested in an awesome experience, as well as instructor development.

The prices for diving in Bali vary slightly across each of the dive locations as the distance traveled to reach the locations or sites varies quite significantly, but here’s a rough estimate so you have an idea of what to expect.

  • 2 fun dives:  approx 1,200,000 IDR or $82( with discounts for multiple days diving)
  • PADI Open Water course:  about 6,000,000 IDR or $430
  • PADI Advenced Open Water course:  5,000,000 IDR or $345
  • PADI Rescue & EFR Course:  7,500,000 IDR or $515

There are too many to list, as there are a lot of great dive centers with instructors, in a lot of good locations for beginners. It really depends on what diving you’re most interested in, as well as where you want to base yourself for a few days.

Amed is a super laid-back spot, with easy, yet awesome, dives and one of the cheapest spots in Bali to learn to dive. Sanur is a little more expensive, but has some highly recommended dive shops and gives you access to a variety of dive spots for your  certification .

Blue Corner in Nusa Lembongan (mentioned above) is also a great place to do any certifications, as you are also going to see some great stuff, including manta rays!  Another great dive center in Nusa Lembongan is Siren Divers, so check them out as well!

You shouldn’t really have a problem getting around in Bali, language-wise, especially when it comes to diving and dealing with the dive centers. And compared to the rest of Indonesia, almost all the locals speak at least some English, with many completely fluent.

Since nearly all of Bali’s economy relies on foreign tourism, any locals working in dive shops or restaurants, or hotels generally speak decent English. It doesn’t hurt to learn a few key phrases though.

There is also a huge ex-pat community in Bali, and all of the dive centers I’ve visited so far were owned by Americans or Europeans, or Australians. So you’ll be communicating easily. Tour guides also speak English if you are looking for one.

Bali is a good place to scuba dive and snorkel if you want to be able to see a lot of species that you will never see in The Americas or Europe. Of course, most aren’t exclusive JUST to Bali, there are other great locations in  Indonesia , but Bali does offer some greats! From manta rays to several shark species, turtles to rare octopi, and colorful nudis!

Some exotic critters, that you can’t see in many other countries include:

Mola mola . You should definitely try and experience being in the water with these guys at least once in a lifetime. These giant sunfish are so weird, and not a lot of people have seen them!

Rhinopias . These weird fish, especially the weedy rhinopia, are some strange concoction between a frogfish and a scorpionfish. They come in different colors and are fun to find.

Hairy frogfish . It’s not just the Lembeh Straight macro king that has hairy frogfish, you can see them in some of the great muck sites of Bali as well.

Lots of species of colorful eels . From giant morays to medium size snowflake eels, to small garden eels, you will definitely get your fix.

Flamboyant cuttlefish.  Every diver should have flamboyant cuttlefish on their critter bucket list. You’ll see lots of other cuttlefish as well, just not as cute.

Colorful nudibranchs.  If you don’t know what a nudibranch is, you are in for a treat. If you do know, then you are still in for a treat. Either way, there are so many cool nudi species in Bali that it’s a photographer’s heaven.

Octopi . Blue ring, wunderpus, mimik, matoti and more. What more can you ask for?

There are a lot more incredible species in Bali that you can hope to see, including giant manta rays, but there are too many to list. Suffice it to say you won’t be bored.

One thing is for sure, you are definitely going to want to get as many photo or video memories as you can during your epic dive trip to Bali. We put together a big list of the  Best Dive Cameras for every budget , which will give you an idea of what’s out there.

On that list we put together, you will find the best options, based on personal experience, for every budget or need. So check that out.

Where To Stay When Diving In Bali?

You’ll find accommodation to suit all budgets and styles in the majority of Bali including basic hostels, boutique bed and breakfasts, full-service resorts, private villas, and more.

Once you’ve picked your locations from the list above, you can check out the different accommodation options.

Ever heard of  PADI Travel ?

Geography Of Bali

Bali island is in the shape of a kiwi bird and is located between Java and Lombok islands. Bali is the most popular tourist destination in Indonesia, attracting backpackers, surfers, divers, and more.

Fun Fact About Bali:

South is sometimes north. The Balinese concept of the north is the same as ‘up’ – a place where gods and good spirits dwell. bIn this way, high points such as Mount Agung, which is considered sacred, represent ‘north’, and you’ll find most Balinese dwellings and shrines face ‘north’ – to the mountain. If you are north of Mount Agung and ask where north is, you will almost definitely be directed to the mountain – south of where you stand.

Unesco Sites In Bali:

There is only one UNESCO World Heritage site in the province of Bali, and that is the Cultural Landscape of Bali Province: the Subak System as a Manifestation of the Tri Hita Karana Philosophy I was surprised to find that there are only 8 in all of Indonesia.

Travel tips for Bali:

It’s rude in a temple to…

  • Have the soles of your feet pointing at the altar
  • Point at things, especially statues
  • Be improperly attired (you must wear a long sarong and cover your shoulders
  • Be loud or irreverent
  • Stand higher than the priest
  • Have an uncovered wound
  • Be visibly pregnant
  • TIME ZONE: UTC+08:00
  • CALLING CODE: +62
  • MAIN AIRPORT: DPS
  • PLUGINS: 220 V
  • CURRRENCY: IDR

And that’s it! You now know all the best spots of scuba diving in Bali and the essentials to start planning your trip. The Scuba Otter team has spent a ton of time diving in Bali, as well as other  top spots in Indonesia  so if you’ve still got questions, please leave us a comment below!

A Guide to the Best Diving in Bali – Where, When, and How to Go

By now, Bali is (in)famous for a lot of reasons: righteous surf, affordable yoga retreats, drunken Australians, all of these and a whole lot more. Sarcasm aside, it truly seems like there is no end to the amount of cool stuff that you can do on this island.

Not shocking is the fact that the diving around Bali is also fantastic! Here you will find a huge array of diving opportunities, from swimming with manta rays to exploring sunken ships to searching for elusive critters like the mola mola.

I understand that not everyone is well-versed in Bali’s dive sites, or even scuba diving for that matter; no worries, that’s why we’re here.

This article is intended for readers looking to learn more about how to dive and where to dive in Bali , regardless of skill level. We’ll talk about the best dive sites, how to get certified, what to pack, plus a whole lot more. Whether you’re to take the plunge in the Lombok Strait or just a local hotel pool, everyone will be able to glean a little bit from this Bali diving guide.

The Best Areas to Go Diving in Bali

How to organize a diving trip in bali, being a better diver in bali.

So you are visiting Bali and looking to get beneath the waves?! Let’s not waste time; here are some of the best Bali sites!

1. Diving in Amed

Home to some of the best dive sites in bali.

Notable dive sites: Japanese Wreck, Gili Selang, Fish Pyramids, Ghost Bay

Distance from Kuta Beach: 2.5 hours

artificial reefs around amed bali

Amed is the new “hot spot” for divers in Bali . Few other places offer such accessibility, convenience, and underwater splendors as Amed does. This is one of the easiest places to see marine wildlife in Bali , not to mention some of the most beautiful as well.

Amed is primarily known as a macro-diving mecca. Small marine animals and corals are in abundance in these waters. Chalk it up to the calm currents, the nutrient-rich volcanic sediments, or the artificial reefs at the Japanese Wreck and Ghost Bay (which the fish frickin’ love by the way); either way, there’s a lot going on underwater in Amed.

Common life spotted in the area include reef sharks, barracuda, nudibranch, parrotfish, turtles, and a whole lot more. If you’re very lucky, you may also have the chance to spot super rare pygmy seahorse, ghost pipefish, and mimic octopus.

What makes Amed so good for diving though is the sheer amount of choices you have. There are many, many local dive centers to choose from, and numerous dive sites. You have options, people, which makes it a great place to start – especially for you beginner divers!

Also, I can’t forget to mention that there are some excellent night diving opportunities around Amed as well! In fact, most of the local divemasters can’t stop talking about it! Be sure to enquire about a night dive when you visit.

2. Diving at Tulamben

The real mvp.

Notable dive sites: USS Liberty Wreck, Seraya Secret, Coral Garden, The Drop-off

Distance from Kuta Beach: 3 hours

diving in amed uss liberty

Tulamben is Amed’s little northern neighbor. It is so close that often people lump them both into the same category when they consider diving in the region. The two offer a lot of the same marine life, but are each their own fantastic dive sites.

That being said, the diving in Tulamben is arguably better than in Amed.

Tulamben’s dive sites are spectacular! The Seraya Secret is probably the best muck diving location in Bali, and the Drop-Off offers great deepwater scuba diving opportunities.

The real draw is the USS Liberty Wreck though; this enormous hull of a sunken ship hosts a vivid array of aquatic life. On every beam and in every crack of the ship, there is some microcosm of marine life. Quite literally, this ship has become a giant living reef.

Because of its grade-A dive sites, Tulamben can be pretty busy; that is of course if you’re underwater . Most people don’t stay in the actual village of Tulamben; instead, they opt to go on day trips from other parts of Bali or to stay in Amed. This means that the village itself is pretty peaceful, at least by Balinese standards. If you wanted to stay in an area of Bali that was slightly quieter, then Tulamben may be your jam.

3. Diving around Nusa Penida

For people who want to see swim manta rays and mola mola.

Notable dive sites: Gamat Bay, Crystal Bay, Manta Point

Distance from Kuta Beach: 1.5 hours

diving with manta rays nusa penida

Contrary to what some people might say, you can’t just jump in the water anywhere in Bali and expect to see monsters like manta rays. If you pulled this shit when visiting Uluwatu, you’d for sure be in for a very rude surprise. (Spoiler alert: 4-meter waves and really pointy rocks.)

The best, and really only, place to see manta rays in Bali is around the island of Nusa Penida – hence the name Manta Point. Actually, this may be one of the best places in the world to see manta rays . Some local scuba divers say the chances of seeing a manta ray during peak season (April-May) is somewhere between 80-90%. I honestly don’t know how accurate those numbers really are BUT, having visited Nusa Penida  myself, I think that they are pretty damn close.

Seriously, there are manta rays everywhere around the southern coast of Penida. You don’t even have to go scuba diving in Nusa Penida to see them either! You can see them simply by standing on the edge of a tall cliff and look down (like at Manta Point).

There’s more to Nusa Penida than mantas. The coral reefs at Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay are both very good and can be seen simply with a snorkel. For more adventurous experienced divers, the elusive mola mola can also be found around the island, though seeing one requires some advanced diving skills.

4. Menjangan Island Diving

The most beautiful coral in bali.

Notable dive sites: POS I, POS II, Eel’s Garden, Budack Wreck

Distance from Kuta Beach : 4 hours

Menjangan Island Diving

There was a time when Amed was considered the place to go remote diving in Bali. Alas, like many of Bali’s top attractions , anonymity has gone out the window.

But there are still a few lesser-known places to go diving in Bali! Case and point: Menjangan Island. This paradisiacal island, located off the northwestern coast of Bali, has long been known for its excellent diving. Yet, it still receives a fraction of the number of divers as Amed or Nusa Penida or even Padang Bai. What gives?

The reason why Menjangan Island is less trafficked is that it’s so far away from everything else. Most people only make it to this corner of Bali while en route to Java and Mt Bromo, and even then they’ve usually swept away on a ferry before they can really get a taste of the area.

It’s a shame too because Menjangan can really offer a lot. Thanks to its lack of human intervention, the coral reefs around Menjangan are pristine; the kind of bright, colorful stuff you see in Nat Geo. But more than scuba diving or snorkelling, Menjangan is also just a really great place to escape to.

Mangroove Bay Hostel in Sumberkima is just a short drive from the beach where you can hop on a boat to Menjangan Island. A modern, tropical hostel in Bali, it is a truly epic place to stay.

Note that you will need a permit and a licensed guide to visit Menjangan Island. The permit costs 20k IDR and the guide usually costs 350k IDR – you can pick up both at Menjangan’s usual port of entry: Labuan Lalang. There are plenty of local dive centers and dive operators around to choose from!

5. Diving at Nusa Lembongan

Very similar to diving around nusa penida.

Notable dive sites: Blue Corner, S.D. Point, Pura Red

mola mola near nusa lembongan bali

Nusa Lembongan is like the Amed to Nusa Penida’s Telambun; one offers more spectacular scuba diving than the other, while one is probably more convenient in which to stay.

Comparisons aside, Nusa Lembongan is still a dive site worthy of being considered alone. After all, it does feature the Blue Corner, which is considered one of the best dive sites in all Bali, comparable to anything in Tulamben or Nusa Penida.

Most dive trips to Nusa Lembongan are combined with Nusa Penida, because the two islands are very close to each other and Penida really is the best place to see marine life like manta rays and mola mola. When done together, both can provide really amazing scuba diving experiences!

Between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida, Lembongan probably has the most local diving centers. This makes the island a great place to base oneself when organizing trips. On that note, when backpacking around Nusa Lembongan , you’ll find accommodation generally of a higher standard… plus the bars are better. Everyone loves a good beer after a dive, right?!

6. Padang Bai Diving

A good place to dive in bali for beginners.

Notable dive sites: Blue Lagoon, The Channel, The Jetty

Distance from Kuta Beach: 1 hour

spanish dancer fish in bali

Padang Bai is a great place for beginner divers in Bali for a couple of reasons.

  • It’s closer to Bali’s main touristy areas, like Canggu , more than other diving hotspots like Amed or Menjangan Island.
  • The water here is quite calm so newbies won’t have to worry about battling powerful currents.
  • The diving around Padang Bai, in general, is very good.

The Blue Lagoon is the most popular dive site near Padang Bai and attracts all sorts of divers, both experienced and novice. The water is shallow yet is full of alluring wildlife, like whitetip reef sharks, Spanish dancer fish, rays, and more. At night, this site is also particularly good according to local divers. This is ideal for those looking to shore dive the shallow coral reefs.

The further out you go, the more technical scuba diving gets in Padang Bai. The current starts to pick up and the ocean floor becomes much deeper. For experienced divers, there are lots of deepwater opportunities, especially around the area called “The Channel.”

If you just want to go for a snorkel, don’t worry; the Blue Lagoon is gentle enough for a casual swim. You can rent snorkeling gear either from your hotel or from one of the local beach shacks. Better to bring your own though.

7. Diving in Pemuteran

Hosts the largest biorock project in the world.

Notable dive sites: Gede’s Reef, Boat Cemetery, Reborn Reef

artificial reef scuba diving in bali

The ethics of diving is a contentious issue. Whilst, on the one hand, scuba diving can offer people the opportunity to experience new environments and has the potential to educate them, on the other hand, it can also lead to environmental abuse. If a particular dive site is very popular, the ecosystem can be damaged due to constant human contact.

Permuteran is an example of what responsible diving in Bali can look like. Thanks to the local Biorock Project , the local marine life around Permuteran is allowed to thrive. By creating new underwater environments and protecting the habitats from fishermen – who have used dynamite to fish in the past – the Biorock Project is creating a stronger aquatic ecosystem. The artificial reef is teaming with amazing marine life.

More and more people are visiting Permuteran every year, as it’s also home to one of the best beaches in Bali . It’s conveniently located next to Lovina and is within jumping distance of other superlative dive sites like those at Menjangan Island. Hopefully, those that visit will gleem new insight from local endeavors, like the Biorock Project, and will become more enlightened divers as such.

Honorable Mention: Diving near Sanur

A convenient place to base yourself.

Notable dive sites: None really, but it’s close to Nusa Penida, Lembongan, Padang Bai

Distance from Kuta Beach: 30 minutes

beautiful beach in bali with waves

Listen, I’m going to be perfectly honest: there really isn’t any diving around Sanur. Hate to break it to ya, but Sanur is pretty much just a port and a bunch of resorts.

Let’s not take those two pieces for granted though because where there is a will, there is a way!

Sanur is where you want to go if you have no idea what to expect from a trip to Bali. Because Sanur is super easy to get to from the airport and because it has so many amenities, it would be a great place to base yourself at first.

There are also many dive shops and dive operators in Sanur to choose from. Whether you’re looking to organize a diving day trip to somewhere or you’re a beginner diver looking to do your first dive in Bali, the local centers will be able to help you out. In particular, Joe’s Gone Diving comes highly recommended.

When in the South of Bali, Stop by Tribal Bali

dive trip bali

Looking to find the perfect place to hustle, work, rest and play? Welcome to Tribal Hostel, the world’s best co-working hostel… Bali’s first custom-designed, purpose-built digital nomad friendly hostel is now open! Mingle, share inspiration and find your tribe whilst working in the TREMENDOUSLY HUGE co-working space or soaking in some sun in the garden or bar… There’s a gigantic pool as well so it’s always time for a refreshing dip to break up the day’s hustle. Plus: epic food, legendary coffee and awesome cocktails! What are you waiting for? Check it out…

Now that we know where to go diving Bali , we’re going to talk about some of the finer details of organizing your trip.

When to Go Diving in Bali

The best time to go diving in Bali is during the dry season , which runs roughly between the months of April and October. During this time, the water is calm, storms are infrequent, and visibility is at peak conditions. Many of the island’s most famous underwater life, like manta rays and mola mola, come out to play during this time as well.

April and May are the best months to go swimming with manta rays, which should be on everyone’s Bali bucket-list. August to October is when the elusive mola mola appears. Interestingly enough, the traditional Balinese calendar also states that September and October are the best months to go underwater . The more you know!

diving with mantas nusa penida

The only downside to visiting Bali in the dry season is that it’s generally more touristy. This means the crowds will be larger and the prices will be higher. If you want to avoid peak tourist season, plan your diving trip to Bali around the shoulder months: April and October.

It is not recommended to go diving in Bali during the wet season. Regular monsoons make the seas very rough, which lead to poor visibility and unsafe diving conditions. Consider visiting elsewhere in Indonesia during this time. For example, diving around Sumatra is possible all year.

What are the Prices of Diving in Bali?

traveling around bali by boat

Scuba diving is never a cheap hobby, no matter where you are in the world. That being said, Bali is still a relatively affordable place to organize a dive, not to mention one of the most convenient.

There are dozens of schools and dive shops in Bali, maybe hundreds, that offer a wide array of services. Equipment rental, liveaboards, PADI training; you name it and you can probably find it on the island. And if you’re already travelling by and living on a boat , the prices just get lower!

Each business will obviously have its own prices and we suggest that you shop around for the best one. Keep in mind some of these rough diving prices in Bali:

  • A single dive: $30-$40 or 500k-600k IDR
  • Dive package: $60-80 or 1,000k-1,200k IDR
  • A liveaboard: $250-$300/day or 3,500k-4,200k IDR/day
  • Open water certification: $300-$350 or 4,200k-5,000k IDR/day
  • Advanced open water certification: $275-$325 or 3,900k-4,500k IDR/day
  • Refresher course: $60-80 or 1,000k-1,200k IDR

Do consider paying the extra money for a quality dive instructor or guide. Most of them are born-and-bred locals who’ve been doing this their entire lives. Your investment in them will ensure that diving continues in Bali.

Don’t forget to take room and board into consideration when planning your trip. Unless you invest in a larger diving package in Bali, say a training course or a liveaboard, then the price of accommodation is often on you.

Note that, even if you do end up booking a big package deal or diving course in Bali, lodging isn’t necessarily covered. Always be sure to double-check these things with your dive school to avoid hidden expenses.

If you’re an avid diver-traveler, read more about liveaboard experiences .

Staying Safe While Scuba Diving in Bali

There have been a number of diving accidents around Bali in recent years. The causes of these incidents is both from mother nature and just sheer human stupidity.

First and foremost, the currents can be VERY strong. We’re talking underwater jetstreams in some places that will carry away before you know it. If a storm comes through as well, you can expect the ocean to be in a dangerously foul mood. This story from The Guardian is a particularly harrowing one although things like this don’t happen very often.

Irresponsible people can also be just as dangerous as the elements. One diver was hit by a boat near Nusa Lembongan and died shortly after. Such a waste of life considering that this accident could have been avoided with proper safety measures.

What all of this means is that you just need to go with a reputable dive school in Bali. A real master will know when to avoid the oceans and where the worst currents are. They will not skimp on protocol either and will do everything in their power to make the dive as safe as possible. The good centers will cost a bit more, to be sure, but your life is worth more.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Looking to try some new types of diving or maybe looking to do an open water course in Bali? Let’s talk more about you can pursue diving further in the following section.

Diving in Bali for Beginners: Where to Start and Getting Certified

diving in bali for the first time

If you’re new to diving, don’t fret – there are a ton of dive schools in Bali that can help you out. Whether you’re totally green and just want to go on a casual dive or you’re an aspiring divemaster who wants to be the next Steve Zissou, the local teachers in Bali will be there to help you out.

When it comes to diving in Bali, beginners need to know that not every popular dive site will be available to them. The seas around Bali are notorious for their strong currents and unpredictable conditions. There are places that are just not appropriate for those who are new to diving.

The first thing that you need to do is find a good diving center in Bali. The right center will be able to assess your diving skills, craft a diving itinerary, and then guide you in the water.

Some dive schools may require you to have your Open Water Diving Certification in order to dive with them. Other centers may accept unlicensed divers but will probably have you do a trial run in a local pool first to test your competence. If you fall under the latter category, I highly recommend that you do your research and find a reputable center – newbies and lackadaisical dive masters could be a bad combo.

If you’re required to have some sort of certificate to go diving in Bali or you just want to get one anyway, then you won’t be lacking of options. There are a ton of open water courses available. You can find one simply by doing some online research though I suggest you contact Abyss Dive Center in Amed first – they have an awesome staff and, as an added bonus, the best French crepes on the island.

Choose Your Weapon: Muck, Deep Sea, or Wreck Diving in Bali?

One of the best parts about diving in Bali is that there are so many different ways to do so. Whether you like swimming with giants, getting up close and personal with some macro, or enjoy swimming around coral gardens, Bali has you covered.

Below are a couple of different types of diving and where you can do them around the island:

  • Muck-diving – Without question, Amed and Tulamben are the muck diving sites in Bali. Gentle currents, copious sediment, and great visibility make these areas excellent places to see macro marine life . Seraya Secrets is probably the most renowned muck-dive site of them all.
  • Deep-sea diving – Spotting mola mola will probably be the crown achievement for deep-sea divers traveling to Bali. These creatures are extremely rare and only appear around Nusa Penida in September and October. Deep-sea divers may enjoy the huge walls at Menjangan Island.
  • Wreck diving – Again, Amed and Tulamben take the cake for this one – they host some of the most massive wreck dives, not only in Bali but the entire world. The USS Liberty Wreck and Japanese Wreck are the most famous of them all.
  • Snorkeling – Sometimes scuba diving can be a hassle. It’s cool – I sometimes just want to lay on a beach and drink Bintang too. If you want to go on some more casual exploratory missions of the ocean, there is still plenty of snorkeling in Bali. The Blue Lagoon at Padang Bai is a great spot, as is Crystal Bay on Nusa Penida.

Try Freediving in Bali!

Want to do something truly unique when you visit Bali? Why not give free-diving a try!

What is freediving I hear you asking? First off, no, it’s not a special deal where someone gets to dive without paying. (Wouldn’t that be something broke backpackers!)

Freediving actually refers to a style of diving that involves no life-saving equipment whatsoever. It simply requires a mask, some flippers, and really freakin’ strong lungs. By holding their breath and controlling their respiratory system, freedivers can actually reach depths over 50 meters and can stay underwater for over 8 minutes! That’s nuts guys!

learning to dive in bali

Free-diving can feel pretty different from scuba diving. I’ve heard a lot of people describe it as more of a sport than regular diving because it requires greater physical training. Some people have also described free-diving as somewhat theraputic – the feeling of pressure on your lungs and the controlled breathing can have profound effects on one’s psyche, so this is more than just seeing pretty things underwater.

If you want to learn how to freedive in Bali, then you must travel to Amed. The first free-diving schools were founded here and, to this day, the village still hosts the grand majority of schools on the island.

Apenista is the original freediving school in Bali and is still one of the best. The staff goes out of their way to create a positive environment and are very experienced in the sport. They also work closely with Blue Earth Village to provide yoga courses to students because yoga and free-diving kind of go hand-in-hand.

Bali is a popular year-round tourist hotspot in Indonesia, known by scuba divers for its excellent muck diving, beautiful walls, easy shore dives, interesting wrecks, and thrilling encounters with manta rays and Mola molas. Topside, Bali offers beautiful sceneries with lush rice fields, tropical jungles, and mountainous terrains. There is an endless list of things to do for scuba divers and non-divers alike, making Bali one of our favorite dive destinations for families . B ali not only offers great diving and beautiful topography, but any tourist is sure to enjoy the diversity of Balinese culture and cuisine.

Bali Dive Resort Areas

All the information you need to book your dive vacation and learn about the best Bali dive resorts .

Where Tulamben, Amed, Padang Bai, and Candidasa are located, hosts a good number of land-based operations and resorts catering to all kinds of budgets.

  • Tulamben Bay  is best known for the world-famous USAT Liberty Wreck, which is many believe to be the world's easiest wreck dive , easily accessible from the shore and teeming with interesting marine life including resident schools of jacks, barracudas and Napoleon wrasses.
  • Amed Bay is a quiet area with a pitch-black volcanic sand beach offering lovely sceneries and great muck, wall, and wreck diving.
  • Padang Bai and Candidasa offer some of Bali's most interesting dives, a wide variety of macro and wide-angle sites.

These 4 areas are no more than a 15-minute to 1-hour drive away from each other. Wherever you stay in East Bali, most dive operators will be able to arrange a dive at any of the sites in these 4 areas. Day trips to Nusa Penida are also common.

Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida, especially Crystal Bay , is one of the very few reliable places on earth to see the oceanic sunfish (Mola mola). Manta Point is another popular site nearby which, as the name suggests, offer the chance to swim or dive up close with manta rays.

There is a good number of land-based dive operators and hotels on the nearby Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan islands, but there are no commendable options on the island of Nusa Penida itself,

NortHWEst BaLI

Less popular but great nonetheless, this area is best known for the excellent muck dives in Pemuteran, notably at Secret Bay, and the easy and beautiful wall-diving with stellar visibility at Menjangan Island. A day trip could be arranged to this area from your hotel in East or South Bali, but there is a good number of dive resorts and hotels available around the area.

Diving in Bali: a first-timer guide

dive trip bali

Located in the coral triangle in Indonesia, in South-East Asia, Bali is undoubtedly one of the most popular scuba diving destinations in the world . Thanks to world-class dive sites such as the Liberty shipwreck, Crystal Bay and Manta, scuba diving is one of the most fun things to do in Bali . Scuba divers visiting the island of the gods can frequently see underwater large marine animals such as the manta rays and the mola-mola (oceanic sunfish).

Being a volcanic island, Bali offers incredible muck and macro diving opportunities for underwater photography enthusiasts, and the numerous shore dive sites are perfect for beginners. You can find many PADI and SSI dive centres west of Kuta and north of Ubud in Amed, Tulamben, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida, and Menjangan Island . If you add the fact that this is a reasonably priced destination with stunning rice terraces and colourful Hindu temples, you have the ideal mix for a fabulous dive safari around Bali.

It only took me two dive trips to Bali, during which I spent a total of 6 weeks, to fall in love with the Indonesian island. The only problem may be that I’m not the only one, but the good news is most people stay in the south around Kuta, while scuba divers usually stay around Amed on the east coast which is much quieter and where Bali is still Bali. For those who are still dreaming of getting there, let me guide you through how to plan a first dive trip to Bali successfully, so you don’t rush trying to see everything and have an enjoyable diving holiday.

Where is the best diving in Bali?

Diving in Nusa Lembongan - Best dive sites Bali

The island of Bali is not huge, less than 6,000 km², and also includes the smaller islands of Lembongan, Penida, Ceningan in the east and Menjangan in the north. Due to the reasonable distances, some dive centres in the south offer day trips as far as Menjangan Island, but I wouldn’t recommend doing this. Thanks to its variety of dive sites, the best thing to do is to go on a road trip to link all the best dive sites in Bali . My top tip is to make sure you have the right level of scuba diving to avoid any disappointment. Some dive sites are deep, others have strong currents. Generally speaking, Indonesia is a dive destination that is better appreciated as an advanced diver. However, Bali has a few spots that are a good fit for beginner divers.

My top 5 dive sites in Bali

To give you a quick idea of the main places to go scuba diving in Bali, if I narrow down to my top 5 dive sites, you will quickly see by exploring two spots, Tulamben and Nusa Penida , you can get a first excellent glimpse of some of the best diving in Bali for a first trip there. Chances are high anyway that just like me, you’ll want to come back again and again to the island of Gods, so don’t try to do everything at once, keep it some for later.

  • Liberty shipwreck , Tulamben, maximum depth 28m
  • Crystal Bay , Nusa Penida, maximum depth 40 m
  • Manta Point , Nuda Penida, maximum depth 25 m
  • Eels Garden , Menjangan Island, maximum depth 30 m
  • Drop-off , Tulamben, maximum depth 40 m

Diving in Amed & Tulamben

Located only 10 minutes driving away from each other, Amed and Tulamben are two fishermen’s villages on the northeast coast of Bali which became the hub of passionate divers and underwater photographers. Home to the famous Liberty shipwreck , I don’t think I’m exaggerating by saying that Tulamben might be Bali’s #1 scuba diving spot.

The USAT Liberty was an American cargo ship torpedoed during WWII by a Japanese submarine. Today, it is the most accessible shipwreck in the world since it was towed on the shore after its sinking. A volcanic eruption in the 1960’s put it back under the surface of the water, but only a stone’s throw away from the dark pebble beach. Open water divers can explore the shipwreck since its shallowest point starts at 5 m deep, and advanced Open water divers will be able to see its deepest point, which is not so deep, at 28 m.

The best moment to explore the wreck is at sunrise, at about 6 am, before most of the tourists from the other part of the island arrive. It is possible to be almost alone on the wreck and see the school of large bumphead parrotfish before they leave the shore for the day.

dive trip bali

Beyond wreck diving, diving in Tulamben and diving in Amed is all about some of the best shore diving in the world. Those who love macro critters and nudibranchs and are into underwater photography should definitely check the dive site called “Seraya Secrets”. If you don’t like to swim too much, it is always possible to hop on a jukung dive boat to take you a bit more off the shore in only 2 to 3 minutes. It is an excellent option to visit Tulamben drop-off for instance.

From the beach of Amed, the dive style is more muck diving style, but for those you love searching for marine animals with their underwater camera, it offers the possibility to scuba dive in relatively shallow waters up to 5 times a day.

Diving in Nusa Lembongan & Nusa Penida

Nusa Lembongan has been the historical hub for those who wanted to have the chance to scuba dive with the giant sunfish of Bali , the mola-mola, since it was the closest from the main island. For a couple of years now, Nusa Penida has now had some infrastructure to welcome visitors and scuba divers to explore the famous sites of Crystal Bay and Manta Point directly from its shore.

The easiest way to go diving in Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida is from Sanur where you can take a speed boat which takes you there in only 25 minutes . If you want to say a bit of money and you have plenty of time, you can take the public ferry which crosses the Sanur Channel in about an hour.

It is important to note that while you may be able to see manta rays all year round at Manta Point in Nusa Penida, the peak season to see mola-mola in Crystal Bay, between Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida, is only from July to September . On my second trip to Bali, I visited the dive site mid-October and I was extremely lucky to see a mola-mola at that time.

Another essential thing to note is the currents and the depths of the mola-mola cleaning station. You can start observing the sunfish from a minimum of 30 m deep. The currents can be strong and as a result, the water temperature is much colder than anywhere else around Bali. With a water temperature between 23 and 25°C , a 5 mm full suit is a good option if you want to stay warm.

dive trip bali

Manta Point is not so deep but the currents can be strong, so depending on the conditions it can or cannot be a dive site for beginner divers. At the time of my visit, there was a prominent tidal current swinging us from side to side, so if you are prone to seasickness, you might not like it.

There are many other exciting dive sites around Nusa Lembongan such as Mangrove dive sites. Many of them are quite powerful drift dives . Generally speaking, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida are scuba diving spots which are better appreciated when you are an experienced diver who can handle and have fun at the same time in such conditions of temperature, depth and current.

Diving in Pemuteran & Menjangan Island

Menjangan Island is part of one of the oldest national parks in Indonesia, the Bali Barat (West Bali) National Park created at the beginning of the 20 th century. While being the furthest away from the popular south area of Bali at the northwest tip of Bali, just before where the ferry goes to Java Island, it is my top recommendation for beginner divers thanks to its calm waters.

Marine biology lovers should definitely go diving in Menjangan Island due to the variety and density of soft corals on display around the tiny island. Being a fully protected area, scuba diving centres are located in the nearby town of Pemuteran. It almost feels like you are on a different island with its quiet atmosphere and wild landscape.

Diving in Menjangan Island

While scuba diving in Menjangan Island might feel easy, advanced divers will be pleased to learn that there are also wall dives taking you as deep as 30 to 40 m below the surface. If you have enough time to explore the area, you can extend your exploration by muck diving in the bay of Pemuteran which includes an experimental artificial reef looking like a Balinese temple and a dive site near the jetty which is famous for looking for mandarin fish at sunset.

Diving in Sanur area

Scuba diving near Sanur - Diving Bali

Located in the south of this island, Sanur is the first place I visited, and scuba dived from in Bali. Far less crowded than Kuta on the opposite shore looking in the direction of Nusa Penida, it is an excellent option for those who just want to go for a dive or two during their trip and beginner divers. I would not now go back scuba diving from Sanur, but I admit it is an excellent base for scuba divers exploring the island for the first time and hesitate to organise everything by themselves.

Most dive centres of Sanur also offer what they call dive safari package , they offer day trips to most dive spots around Bali from Padang Bai to Menjangan Island including lunch, transportation and pick-up at your hotel. It can be a good solution for those who don’t want to change accommodation during their stay in Bali but it comes at a higher price and a much earlier wake-up time.

It is also possible to go scuba diving in the area of Nusa Penida from Sanur thanks to the speed boats some scuba diving centres have. This is precisely what I did for my two very first dive in Bali. Due to the currents, we couldn’t reach Manta Point, but I have two pleasant wall dives not too deep which were perfect to test the waters in Bali.

The dive sites of the Sanur channel don’t have much interest and will be mainly used for people training for their Open Water level.

Diving in the Gili Islands

Turtle - diving in Gili Trawagan

Technically speaking, the Gili Islands do not belong to Bali but to the neighbouring island of Lombok . However, thanks to speedboats going from Amed to each of the three Gili Islands (Trawangan, Menos, Air) in an hour, it has become a popular extension for scuba divers exploring Bali. It’s easy to understand why, since these tiny islands are really all about tropical paradise on a white sand beach with palm trees.

Gili Trawangan was originally a surfer spot but over the years, it became a popular diving spot for both beginners, advanced and even tech divers. Some dive sites are very sheltered for beginners but other deeper dive sites can have really strong currents. The main attraction in the Gilis is the frequent sightings of sea turtles. While it is always cool to say hi to turtles, it is essential to know that due to the use of dynamite fishing around Lombok , some dive sites look more like underwater dunes of dead coral. It remains, however, one of the most popular places in the area for people looking to do scuba diving training at any level in a paradise-like location.

What to see underwater in Bali?

Long-nose Hawfish on a gorgonian - Drop-off Tulamben - Diving in Bali

Beyond being a friendly and sumptuous place to visit, it is hard to beat Bali scuba diving-wise. There is something for every diver in its waters all around the island. From a historical shipwreck to marine life, it is hard to be disappointed by going diving in Bali . Even the Liberty wreck is full of fish species and macro critters to find like in an underwater scavenger hunt.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of the fascinating marine species you may be able to see underwater in Bali. I divided it into four parts, the large marine animals including the pelagic species such as sharks, the tropical fish, the macro critters and I made a special list for nudibranchs.

Where to go diving when you visit Bali for the first time?

Leaf scorpion fish Tulamben - Bali diving

If you are not yet an advanced diver with enough experience, you may choose wisely where you go diving. The best spot for beginners is definitely Menjangan Island. However, it is a bit far so very few people go there on a first trip to Bali. Then Amed and Tulamben, with their shore dive sites, are excellent choices. You won’t go to the deeper and more interesting part of the Liberty shipwreck, but you can still see it, which is pretty cool.

Experienced divers will love the strong drift dive around Nusa Lembongan and a deep dive at Crystal Bay between Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida to hope to see mola molas. If the conditions are not too agitated, Manta Point off Nusa Penida can be a good fit for beginner divers as the cleaning station is quite shallow. Some tour companies even take snorkelers there.

The Gili Islands are often associated with beginner divers. However, while there are shallow dive sites around the Gilis, I experienced pretty strong currents and a wide choice of deep dive sites. As a result, beyond being a party place for scuba divers, Gili Trawangan also became a hub for tech divers .

My recommended 10-day itinerary for first-timers in Bali:

  • Sanur, 1 day: to unjetlag after your international flight and then take the boat to Nusa Lembongan the next day after relaxing at the beach.
  • Nusa Lembongan, 3 days : to enjoy the best dives around Nusa Lembongan, Ceningan and Penida including Crystal Bay and Manta Point, while taking into account the time to return to Bali mainland, this is not too much.
  • Amed, 2 days: enjoy muck diving or alternatively you can also take the speed boat to the Gili Islands.
  • Tulamben, 2 days: enjoy the Liberty shipwreck and the drop-offs to look at the most amazing nudibranchs.
  • Ubud, 2 days: explore Bali’s cultural centre and start the decompression process before going on altitude either to visit Bali’s volcanoes or flying back home.

Which scuba diving centres to choose in Bali?

Scuba divers in Crystal Bay - Bali diving

With so many dive centres all around the island, you may rightfully wonder how to choose your dive centre among Bali dive shops when booking your scuba diving trip to Bali. The good news is I have come across any dive centre which was really bad. Some are part of larger tourism operator groups and offer high service quality but are less personalised. Some are run by Balinese families and while it sometimes looks a run down compared to international companies, the expertise of local guides cannot be compared .

Be careful, unlike Thailand and the Philippines, depending on the place, it isn’t easy to walk in from dive centre to dive centre as they tend to be quite spread out in each area: this is especially true in Sanur. While you may consider doing this in Amed or Gili Trawangan to check if you like the vibe of the dive centre, I recommend booking your dive centres in advance to avoid wasting too much time.

Scuba diving centres in Bali are mostly located in:

  • Nusa Lembongan
  • Nusa Penida

How much is diving in Bali?

Manta Point Nusa Penida - Bali diving

With such incredible diving adventures available all around the island of Bali, Bali diving remains surprisingly affordable with prices similar to what you would usually see in other popular diving destinations in South-East Asia.

As the area in Amed and Tulamben is mostly about shore diving, the price of a dive starts from 300,000 IDR (about 20€) . In areas like Nusa Lembongan where longer boat rides are necessary, the price of a dive is obviously more expensive but still extremely affordable with the price of a dive starting at 425,000 IDR (about 28€) .

Note that if you book a package of 7 to 10 dives, the price of a single dive can drop to 17€; it is almost unbeatable compared to many places in the world. With such low prices you may wonder if you need to pay any smaller extra, actually not, the price of the rental gear is usually included, and Nitrox is sometimes even offered for free to the certified divers.

Is Bali a good place to learn scuba diving?

Crystal Bay - Bali diving

Yes and no, like often it depends. It depends where you go , and it depends on your expectations. If you are ok to not see the best dive sites of Bali as a beginner, then I would say, go to Sanur or Amed , and do your Open Water diver course there. It’s important to understand that places like Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan have mostly deep dive sites and strong currents, hence not recommended for beginner divers.

Prices for scuba diving courses in Bali are very affordable so in that sense, Bali can be an excellent opportunity to make the most of your time there and save a bit of money on your training. Just remember that the Open water course takes from 3 to 4 days to complete so plan your holidays accordingly if this is something you really want to do. Prices for the Open water course in Bali usually start from 200€.

If you don’t want to spend several days during your holidays in Bali and just want to try a dive or discovery dive, then my recommendation would be to go to Menjangan Island where you will see beautiful corals and cute clownfish. Prices for a discovery dive in Bali usually start from 45€.

When is the best time to go scuba diving in Bali?

Crystal Bay - Bali diving

Usually, the best time to dive in Bali coincides with the mola-mola season from July to September . You may see elsewhere that this season is from June to October, but avoid the shoulder season if you want to increase the odds of meeting one. However, if you can, avoid the peak tourist season in July and August. Prices for accommodation can be 50% cheaper, and the traffic on the roads will be more manageable.

Generally speaking, Bali has a tropical, hot and humid climate all year round due to its close location to the Equator. However, the year in Bali can be divided into the rainy season from October to April and the dry season from May to September , which is the recommended season to travel to Bali.

The air temperature is usually between 29°C and 31°C during the day all year round, while it drops to 22/23°C at night. The water temperature around Bali is generally between 27 and 30°C but note the temperature is much cooler off Nusa Penida at 23/25°C.

While January is in the middle of the rainy season in Bali, this is the month I chose for my first trip there. It was mostly raining at night, and maybe an hour or two during the day. It was indeed sunny most days and much quieter and low rates on accommodation (10€ for a private bungalow in Amed). However, it did affect the visibility underwater. Besides, at that time of the year, there was no manta and no mola-mola to see.  The water temperature was warm between 28 and 29°C.

For my second trip to Bali, I planned according to the mola-mola season. The weather was hot and sunny with temperatures above 30°C most days. However, mid-October was a bit late to see the mola-molas. Luckily, I saw one on my first dive in Crystal Bay. At Manta Point, it was like a manta ray highway; it is not always like this, but you are almost sure to see them at this time of the year. The water temperature is cooler in Nusa Penida, between 23 and 25°C, whereas in Bali, it was between 30 and 32°C in Tulamben and Menjangan.

For a first scuba diving trip to Bali, I recommend the month of September to avoid the crowds and give the best shot at meeting a mola-mola at Crystal Bay.

How to get around in Bali with scuba diving gear?

Driving around Bali

There are many different ways to travel around Bali between dive sites during your trip. I personally rented a car each time , because, with all my big scuba diving bag in tow, I found it more convenient than the local Bemo vans the locals use.

Once I went north of Ubud, driving through the rice fields of the rural areas of Bali was a mind-blowing and exciting experience, hence I don’t want to do anything else now every time I’m there. Don’t forget Indonesia drives on the left , so if you live in the UK, Australia and Japan, it won’t be a big deal for you. You also need to know the traffic on Bali’s roads, especially around Denpasar, Ubud, and Kuta is intense, with many people on a scooter all around you. If you are not used to driving in the traffic of a big city, you may want to reconsider this option.

If you don’t want to drive around Bali, here are the other options you can consider:

  • Book transfer with dive centres : If you book ahead of your dives, don’t hesitate to ask them for a transfer. They usually have their own vans and can offer very competitive prices, maybe the best option for scuba divers. Alternatively, some hotels may offer the same service.
  • Tourist shuttles : This is something quite new in Bali but it mostly works for the south part of Bali, so when travelling between Sanur and Ubud this is a good option. Check the companies named Kura-Kura and Perama.
  • Taxis : Taxi usually operates in the south. It might be where you start after landing at Denpasar international airport. Make sure to go to the official booth to get a fixed rate. If you don’t know the current prices, avoid picking one of the drivers waiting at the arrivals. Alternatively, Bali has its own version of Uber with Grab, it used to be only motorbike ride, but now you can find cars too. Prices are usually half of the normal taxi companies.
  • Hiring a driver : Another good option for independent travel around the island, especially if you want to get a few sightseeing visits on your way between diving spots without the hassle of driving yourself. The best way to find them is to ask your hotel or guesthouse for recommendations.
  • Bus : This is the solution for long-distance travel. When going north to Pemuteran, it can be a good option. You need to go first to the bus station in the nearest town so you may need a ride to get there and again after arrival at your destination. While being cheap, they are slower and quite unreliable on their timetable.
  • Ferry : Public ferries are the cheapest way to go to Nusa Lembongan and Lombok, but they are slower and with less reliable timetables.
  • Speed-boats : A bit more expensive but still affordable, this is the best way to go to Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida from Sanur and the Gili Islands from Amed.

Where to stay in Bali to go scuba diving?

View of Mount Agung from Amed Beach - Bali

One of the greatest advantages of Bali is the ability to sleep next to your dive site . No need for any early morning car rides; you can be ready in a matter of minutes after waking up. My favourite places to go scuba diving in Bali are Tulamben and Nusa Lembongan. However, Amed and Sanur are also good options.

Bali is one of the best value-for-money destinations in the world. You can book a family-run resort with a private bungalow which feels luxurious with its large double bed and open-air bathroom , all of it always being tasteful thanks to local talent wood craftsmen. Due to this you may not need to book luxury hotels and save your money for even more diving that you initially expected. However, you will also find a few of my favourite luxury addresses if you need to treat yourself.

Luxury resorts & villas

Most luxury hotels are usually located in Ubud and the south of Bali in places like Seminyak or Nusa Dua. If you want to treat yourself to a couple of nights of deluxe service, there are a few addresses near popular scuba diving places:

  • in Tulamben: the Mimpi Resort
  • in Nusa Lembongan: the Lembongan Beach Club & Resort
  • in Pemuteran: the Taman Sari Resort
  • in Sanur: the Maya Resort & Spa

However, in most rural areas, deluxe rental villas are also a thing for those of us who want to scuba dive in style. Prices start from 150€ a night including a private swimming pool!

Guesthouses, homestays & small family-run resorts

Family-run guesthouses and small resorts are my favourite options in Bali. I always try to book a private bungalow in the middle of a flower garden near the beach. They have very basic services, but the decoration is always tasteful in all Balinese local craft made furniture, and did I tell you about these open-air bathrooms? Prices in those cosy places usually range from 10 to 40€ a night, depending on the season and distance from the beach.

Of all the places I stayed at in Bali, these are my favourite addresses in diving areas:

  • Matahari Resort in Tulamben
  • Pondok Baruna in Nusa Lembongan

In Amed, there is such a large choice of cute beach front bungalows, that I let you have a look and pick your favourite. Note: Walking at sunrise on the beach of Amed to see Mount Agung minutes after waking up is something I will never forget.

Hostels & dormitories

Due to the affordability of most accommodation in Bali, hostels were not a thing for a long time. However, they appear increasingly, especially in places where scuba divers go, such as Tulamben and Amed . In a dormitory, a night can be less than 5€. This is proof you can also be on a shoestring and travel to Bali.

Here are a few addresses:

  • In Amed: Ocean Prana Village
  • In Tulamben: Pebbles & Fins
  • In Denpasar near Sanur: Bali eco living dormitory
  • In Nusa Lembongan: Uma Hostel Lembongan
  • In Nusa Penida: Kamasanti Hostel
  • In Gili Trawangan: Gili Pirates

Tulamben: An unassuming dive town with mind-blowing marine life

A quaint fishing village located on the northeast coast of Bali, Tulamben lures travelers from around the world to explore the fascinating world that lies beneath the ocean’s surface. Tulamben offers a remarkable scuba opportunities for divers of all experience levels. Just 25 meters offshore lies the wreck of the WWII USAT Liberty cargo ship, an underwater wonderland and one of Bali’s best dive sites.  In addition to the Liberty Wreck, there are numerous other dive sites teeming with sealife in or near Tulamben Bay. Divers can expect to see a diverse range of marine life including corals, sponges, sea turtles, sharks, squids, octopus, rare macrolife, starfish, eels, manta rays and of course, hundreds of species of fish.

Liberty Wreck

A historic artifact revitalized into one of the richest marine environments in the world. Resting 3-30m deep, the Liberty is one of the most accessible wreck dives.

Batu Kelebit

A rock cluster accessible by a quick jakung ride, this site features a stunning coral reef that drops steeply to depths of 30-50m and is an excellent place to spot larger pelagics.

An impressive underwater cliffside created by the eruption of Mount Agung. Vibrant corals, gorgonians, and sponges cover this wall that drops down to 70m.

A paradise for macro lovers and underwater photographers, this “muck diving” site is teeming with fascinating and rare little critters.

A shallow reef abounding with colorful corals and rare marine life. This site is a popular destination for underwater photographers and macro-life enthusiasts.

A sloping reef canvassed with corals, gorgonians, and sponges. Located just past Batu Kelebit, this quieter dive site is a good place to spot sharks.

Amed diving highlight

Amed is a tranquil beachside village in the north east coast of Bali. Many divers are in love with the notion of diving the amazing WWII Shipwreck – but around 7-8 Km south of Tulamben is Amed. This peaceful fishing village typically has beautiful, clear and warm waters where you take a local fishing boat (Jukung) to one of the many dive sites.

You will find an abundance of macro species along with schooling Barracuda, a Japanese Shipwreck, low currents with few dive centres going to Amed. There is an amazing combination of natural and artificial reefs and the soft and hard corals are vibrant and mature. This is one of our favourite dive sites to enjoy some fantastic diving and a scenic lunch on the beach.

We conduct daily trips to Amed or we can bundle Amed with any of your short or long-term safaris with Bali Scuba. Excellent for all levels of diver!!!

Amed dive sites

Jemeluk wall.

Jemeluk is a very easy diving site in Amed perfect for beginners and underwater macro photographers! Jemeluk Bay has a reef area to the left and a wall, on the right side a reef. Both dives will let you great memories.

If you dive along the wall, you will start your journey after few minute boat ride in a quaint traditional Balinese fishing boat (Jukung). You will make the dive along the steep wall, with a maximum depth of 40 metres, passing hard and soft corals, as well as gorgonians that cover massive rocks, encountering multicolored fish passing by, groupers lying on the floor and even trevally darting about in the blue.

If you decide to discover the reef, you could encounter the pink pigmy seahorse (Hippocampus bargibanti). This species is endemic to Indonesia. It lives on sea fans and is able to change its coloration to blend almost entirely with its host fan. It is a pro in camouflage has it takes gorgonian’s colour and texture. This seahorse measures a couple of millimetres which makes it one of the smallest seahorse species in the world. Be gentle with this animal and adapt a proper code of conduct while diving there.

You will do your safety stop over a shallow plateau bathed in soft sunlight and fish, before being picked up by your Jukung.

Pyramids is an easy dive site which takes its name from the many artificial reefs. Indeed this dive site is made of many pyramid-shaped artificial reefs, home of amazing and vibrant marine life.

The dive is just a 5 minute boat ride away from the shore in a traditional Jukung. Between 12 – 25 metres you will find the pyramid-reefs colonised by a multitude of soft corals and fish as well as nudibranch. In the sand that stretches all along the reef, you will find an abundance of blue-spotted stingray gliding along the sea bed.

Pyramids is full of marine life, our team will help you spot the leaf scorpion fish, stone fish, ghost pipefish fish and many other exotic creatures.

Amed Code of conduct

At Bali Scuba we support and adhere to the Green fins Code of Conduct, guidelines that promote a sustainable way of diving. Established by experts, scientific researchers and dive guides. This standard has been designed to provide divers and dive centres with the most eco-friendly experience for marine life in Bali.
