With visual precision and remarkable intimacy, Hannah Olson's documentary "The Last Cruise" recalls the harrowing 40-day quarantine aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship at the outset of the pandemic. On January 20, 2020—the same day when the World Health Organization first reported cases of COVID-19 appearing outside of Wuhan, China—the cruiseliner set sail on a prototypical journey on the high seas. The trip took its multinational manifest of passengers and crew from Japan to Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and back to Japan’s Port of Yokohama. Using their smartphones, the subjects recorded their daily adventures, which grew more precarious by the day and serve as a microcosm for the year-plus crisis the rest of the world would soon experience.

Over 40 poignant minutes, Olson identifies three American couples, the most memorable being Mark and Jerri Jorgensen, heads of an in-patient addiction treatment center for pornography and sex addiction. They are forever chipper even when the situation doesn’t call for their upbeatness. Conversely, of the selected crew members, there's the Indonesian dishwasher Dede Samsul Fuad, who began working on cruiseliners to explore the world, provides us with fascinating behind-the-scenes footage of the ship’s inner-workings. In a documentary that’s not so much investigative as it is revelatory, the two spectrums provided by the two parties’ cellphones show a ship initially unfettered by the virus—passengers were still participating in parties, group workouts, and other onboard activities—only to descend into panic over the coming days as infections skyrocketed.

The film's kitschy score leaves much to be desired, taking a dystopian tone a la “ Blade Runner ” as the enormity of the situation becomes clear, then enveloping a horror film mood as the onboard circumstances become dire. Still, Olson teases out the claustrophobic fears felt by the passengers and crew, and the bleakness that sprouts when facts are being hidden. The Diamond Princess’ captain might say the situation is “under control,” but when the white hazmat suits do appear at the port, and the stream of suite doors denote the infected by simply saying “COVID-19,” the officials’ opaqueness can only elicit worry for those on-camera.

Though the narrative scope is mostly confined to the ship, we do get glimpses of hospital rooms as positive passengers are segregated off the vessel. On the Diamond Princess exists two universes: the passengers waiting for room service in their spacious apartments replete with outdoor decks, and the tireless crew below deck who keep the ship functioning, working beneath the waterline where light does not enter. Pastry chef Maruja Daya, for instance, explains how she works 13-hour days for a salary of $997 per month. In his recordings, Dede often makes note of how he can now enter certain forbidden areas—the lavish portions of the ship reserved for travelers—now that the halls are empty. The Diamond Princess is still the Titanic, wherein the payment is the privilege to serve.

Olson doesn’t judge the wealthier passengers’ sorrow, even while rampant socio-economic inequality exists on the ship. She knows two perspectives can be right at once: The American passengers possess certain entitlements not shared with the underpaid crew which slightly lessens their ordeal, yet the fundamentally different economic stratas can feel the same anguish when confronted with death. But that equal endgame doesn’t distract Olson from explicating the heavy toll faced by the beleaguered crew—the long hours, the cramped quarters, the fear of losing their job if they speak out, and their hopelessness that the rich will be saved while they very well will be left to die. Their accumulated distresses are tangible whenever someone’s camera captures the faint sound of a cough in the background. It’s akin to seeing a shark fin in the water.

These conditions of late-stage capitalism still color the worldwide pandemic response. The United States will soon own an excess of COVID-19 vaccines, for instance, while “at least 30 countries [the poorer ones] have not yet injected a single person,” per the New York Times . Just as the Diamond Princess made for a bellwether to warn of the virus being airborne, their example shows how the world is “one team” until the evacuation begins. The contours of Olson's modestly shaped documentary reveal anxiety, panic, and indulgence—it's the the alarm we were missing a year ago, and we're still hitting the snooze button.

Peacock documentary Hell of a Cruise puts us on board cruise ships in early 2020, which – well, you’ve no doubt assumed it wasn’t a relaxing vacation-type atmosphere, and you’d be right AND wrong. The film chronicles how the ships became floating petri dishes for Covid-19 , and asserts that the Carnival Corporation, which kept its cruises going despite surely knowing better, is partly to blame for the virus’ global spread. Now let’s see if it’s a convincing argument.

HELL OF A CRUISE : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: A man’s on board a Princess cruise, shooting a selfie video. “I’m making it” – he pauses – “just in case.” He’s worried. Passengers are infected with Covid. Everyone on board is under quarantine – and we’ll soon see that healthy people are stuck in their cabins just like sick people and the ship’s crew is going door to door with food and amenities. We see some promotional fodder for Princess Cruises, and overtop we hear voices say, “It was a guaranteed dumpster fire” and that the ships were “singularly effective at propagating Covid.”

We meet four men, college students, who got a great deal on tickets for the Diamond Princess, a 15-day excursion through South Asia that included multiple stops and a Chinese New Year celebration. It was the final hurrah before graduation. The ship left Jan. 20, 2020. News broke that China was enforcing a national lockdown in order to contain Covid outbreaks; the Diamond Princess made its scheduled Hong Kong stop and there, a passenger disembarked and later tested positive. The New Year celebration happened inside the ship instead of on land. The cruise continued to Vietnam, where passengers disembarked for a cave tour, and we see throngs of people crowded together inside the gorgeous natural setting. Maybe the guys shouldn’t have gone on the excursion, but information was sparse and sketchy.

Of course, the cruise line makes money on its excursions, and thus begins a classic narrative: the corporation sacrificing the well-being of its passengers and crew for the sake of the bottom line. We likely already know what happened to the Diamond Princess – it was stuck in a dock in Yokohama, Japan for weeks as Covid cases ticked up and up and up. Meanwhile, even as the Diamond became a floating hell, Princess’ parent company, Carnival, went full speed ahead with other cruises, assuring concerned customers of their safety, and not allowing refunds, of course.

We meet people who took Princess cruises in January and February of 2020, among them serial cruisers; some of whom would go several times a year. As their vacations became debacles, they used their phones to document some of the stuff that was going on: On the Diamond, we see eerily quiet spaces that would normally be bustling with partying passengers, and masked crew members delivering food through empty hallways. On others, group events were canceled, but bars and casinos remained operational – you know, the stuff that costs money, one commentator says. Meanwhile, higher-ups in the U.S. government argue about what to do about the Americans on these cruises, while Carnival management almost certainly knows many things it could and should do, and hardly does any of it.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Eighteen months ago, HBO released The Last Cruise , a more tightly focused documentary on this very subject. It documents some of the exact same incidents and even interviews some of the exact same cruise passengers (possibly because they had lots of good personal footage of their experiences).

Performance Worth Watching: Infectious disease specialist Dr. Michael Callahan shares his voice of reason with a weary tone and demeanor that is all too relatable when it comes to discussion of any pandemic-related topic.

Memorable Dialogue: Dr. Kentaro Iwata of Kobe University assesses Carnival’s strategy for handling Covid outbreaks: “I don’t think there was any strategy.”

Sex and Skin: None.

Our Take: The Last Cruise is only 40 minutes long, but its concision is a boon – it focuses solely on the people aboard the Diamond Princess, and illustrates a clear frontline worker/privileged class dichotomy between crew and passengers on board. Hell of a Cruise takes a bigger, broader approach to the topic, roping corporate and political bungling and malfeasance into the narrative, reaching a conclusion that’s harshly critical of decisions made at the top. And to name names, that includes an especially pointy finger pointing at Carnival CEO Arnold Donald – who, per a postscript title card, made $10 and $13 million in 2020 and 2021 respectively – as well as criticism of mixed messaging from President Trump and Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Hell of a Cruise director Nick Quested’s attempt to cover multiple components of a complex scenario results in a scattered narrative. In one moment, he touches on the sketchy business practices of cruise lines who set up base outside the U.S. so they can avoid taxes, hire grossly underpaid laborers as crew and, crucial to this story, not have to follow the government’s health guidelines. In the next moment, he’s in a tiny windowless cabin with a family of four who’s stuck inside for weeks. He frequently broadens and narrows his focus, and it can be a herky-jerky experience even when the content is revelatory.

But the overall picture is wholly damning of the Carnival Corporation. Especially egregious: The company concocting a hashtag, #HangInThereDiamondPrincess, to boost morale aboard the quarantined ship. We even see crew on another cruise, the Ruby Princess, cheer while holding up banners of encouragement bearing that hashtag, even though their ship is on the cusp of the very same Covid crisis. Carnival saw a public-relations problem more than a health problem; cue a commentator pointing out how the White House treated it exactly the same way. The doc concludes with statistics showing how the company’s obfuscation, denial and outright greed ultimately contributed significantly to the spread of Covid on a global scale. When the movie’s over, you can’t help but ponder all the what-ifs.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Hell of a Cruise could use a little more focused, detailed approach. But as a wide-ranging look at a key moment in the Covid pandemic, it’s compelling and informative.

Gripping Trailer for HBO's' The Last Cruise' Shows Trapped People Aboard Cruise Ship in Early Days of COVID

The Diamond Princess departed from Japan on Jan. 20, 2020, and a month later positive cases of COVID were confirmed

HBO's latest documentary takes on the nightmare aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a PEOPLE exclusive look at the first trailer for the film, director Hannah Olson ( Baby God ) documents multiple first-person accounts of what transpired in the month and a half that passengers and crew found themselves trapped on the ship.

"I spent months collecting hundreds of hours of cell phone footage taken by the passengers and crew aboard the Diamond Princess," Olson tells PEOPLE. "I wanted this to be an immersive experience, meant to transport the viewer back into the particular feeling of the early days of this pandemic."

The Diamond Princess departed from Japan on Jan. 20, 2020, and a month later positive cases of COVID were confirmed.

The ship carried 3, 711 people with 712 becoming infected. Fourteen people, all of them passengers, died.

It wasn't until March 1 that all passengers and crew members were able to disembark the ship.

The Last Cruise premieres on HBO and HBO Max on March 30.

When a Cruise Ship Is as Big as Its Port

Even for a casual watcher with no ties to the city of Stavanger and no memories of the open views from its hills, the film’s footage evokes wistfulness.

The poet and filmmaker Odveig Klyve has lived for several decades in Stavanger, on the west coast of Norway. The city encircles its harbor, on hillsides that slope down to the seafront. It has been a site of international commerce for hundreds of years, Klyve said, first for herring fishing, then international shipping, then the oil industry. “It has always been a city linked to the sea and what the sea can give,” she told me recently, over Zoom. In the short film “View,” Klyve also shows what a maritime enterprise can take away.

The vistas from Stavanger are striking: sparkling ocean, with islands and mountains in the distance. Recently, however, a new industry’s arrival has obstructed the view and, as Klyve put it, changed the very feeling of the city. When cruise ships first came to the harbor, about ten years ago, Klyve remembers her neighbors being excited about the important economic boost that tourists would bring to the area; some residents even put up banners to welcome visitors into their gardens. Over time, however, the cruise industry has become a local controversy.

The ships have become more frequent—and much, much larger. The liners that pull into the harbor now are so tall and broad that they block out views entirely, fundamentally changing Stavanger’s atmosphere. “It takes away the sun,” Klyve told me. “It takes away the air. It’s claustrophobic.” And with the increased commerce has come noise and pollution. Klyve said that some of her harborside neighbors now have to wash their white-painted houses, which go gray because of the smog. Others simply miss being able to see the sea. In summer, up to five cruise ships pull into the harbor every day. Now townspeople and local representatives are arguing about whether the ships ought to be rerouted or restricted.

In “View,” Klyve addresses the phenomenon in a quiet way. The documentary, shot by several camerapeople stationed in different parts of the city, shows exactly what it looks like when one of the cruise liners arrives. The scale is striking—the ship looks more like a geographic feature than a mode of transportation. There is no narration, and, despite the controversy that surrounds the ships, the film itself makes no argument.

Outside her filmmaking, Klyve writes what she calls documentary poetry—poems that address current events in a sidelong way, prioritizing images over assertions. The same approach is clear in “View.” Even for a casual watcher with no ties to Stavanger and no memories of the open views from its hills, the footage evokes wistfulness. The view is gorgeous, bright, colorful—and then suddenly hidden behind a towering wall flecked with cabin windows.

One of my favorite family vacations to this day will always be the 3-day cruise we took from Singapore to Malaysia on the SuperStar Virgo. Even though it was some 20 years ago, I still remember the excitement I felt walking up the grand staircase that wrapped around the Christmas tree, the inordinate amount of time I spent in the arcade room (one the jet skiing game in particular), running down the carpeted hallways to find our room, and the awe I felt at just how huge the entire ship looked from the outside.

My tiny, eight-year-old brain had a hard time processing how something so big could stay afloat, but I had no worries that it wouldn’t. I also remember thinking how cool it was that there was a swimming pool on the top deck, asking myself “how can there be water on top of water?”

It was, without a doubt, a memorable experience and one that I’d like to have again as an adult. I definitely recommend going on a cruise at least once in your life! However, since our collective 2020-2021 reality has put our travel plans to a grinding halt, the only way to do that is vicariously through our TV screens.

So we’ve put together a comprehensive list of TV shows about cruise ships for all you sea-lovers to get the travel bug somewhat out of your system. Whether the format you’re looking for is reality, travel, scripted, or documentary – we’ve got it! So put on your best cruise outfit, grab that poolside cocktail, and settle down onto your couch to binge these TV shows about cruise ships!

CRUISE SHIP REALITY SHOWS

Below deck, brave (2013 – present).

As passengers, we only ever see the surface of what happens on a cruise. We’re the consumers in this entertainment and service industry, after all. Bravo’s reality series Below Deck literally brings us below the ship’s deck – to behind the scenes of the luxurious experience of a ship.

Each season of Below Deck follows the young crew of a superyacht during the ever-busy charter season, chronicling their lives both working and living aboard the vessel.

Some of the yachties, as the crew members are also called, have a prior yachting background while others are there to personify the “work hard, party harder” attitude and bring little to no experience to the table, which always makes for an interesting team dynamic.

One thing is for sure though: there’s nothing these guys wouldn’t do to make sure their clients have the best experience possible.

Below Deck also gives a great view into the perks of working on a yacht, one of which is traveling to places like Sint Maarten, the British Virgin Islands, the Mediterranean Sea, the Bahamas, Tahiti, and most recently, Phuket!

Below Deck Mediterranean, Bravo (2016 – present)

Below Deck was so popular and successful that in March 2015, Bravo announced the arrival of its first spin-off show: Below Deck Mediterranean .

The premise of this spin-off reality show is similar to the original in that it documents the personal and professional lives of the crew on board a superyacht, this time 150-feet in length!

While the regular yachties take a break, the cast of Below Deck takes over for roughly 6 weeks and sail through all sorts of beautiful locations.

Each season features a myriad of colorful guests and customers, ranging from executives on business trips and millionaires on vacation to groups of friends looking for a good time and a sea-bound party.

Here, Chef Ben Robinson from four seasons of the original Below Deck joins the Mediterranean crew as they visit Greece, Croatia, Italy, France, and Spain!

Below Deck Sailing Yacht, Bravo (2020 – present)

News of a second Below Deck Spin-off first came in March 2019 and it wasn’t until December that year that fans got confirmation of a premiere date: for February 2020.

Entitled Below Deck Sailing Yacht , it follows the same format as its predecessors but this time, for the crew on a 180-foot luxury sailing yacht called the Parsifal III as it sails through Greece during charter season.

In a crew mixed with vastly different members, there’s bound to be some tension when certain attitudes and job ethics come to clash – and that’s what reality shows are all about, especially when you’re in a country so beautiful, surrounded by equally beautiful people!

Old relationships are tested while new ones are formed (often to the chagrin of others), but there’s never a dull day on Parsifal III.

Chef Adam Glick, who was on two seasons of Below Deck Mediterranean , joins the Sailing Yacht crew this year. However, with the second season lined up to air in March 2021, it looks like Adam will be bowing out of this new crew.

The Cruise, ITV (2016 – 2018)

It’s not glaringly obvious what the difference is between a yacht and a cruise ship, especially when there are some yachts that are the same length as a cruise!

One difference is that yachts are privately owned and directly chartered while cruise ships are owned by corporations. However, the main difference really lies in the guest experience.

On a cruise ship, you have access to amenities like a gym, pool, spa, arcade room, restaurants, what have you. Renting a yacht, though, provides a more personal and luxurious experience.

ITV’s The Cruise takes us from the yacht setting of the previous shows to an actual cruise ship, though this series does primarily follow the ship’s crew as well.

The Regal Princess ship is over 1,080 feet long and has a whopping 19 decks, so it makes sense that there are more than 1400 crew members manning operations.

The Cruise shows us the hustle and bustle of maintaining their five-star service as they go from Copenhagen to St. Petersburg, the Mediterranean, and even Alaska throughout its five seasons.

DOCUMENTARY TV SHOWS ABOUT CRUISE SHIPS

Mighty ships, discovery channel canada (2008 – 2016).

After a successful one-off special entitled Inside Queen Mary 2 , the Discovery Channel commissioned an entire series exploring the workings of the world’s mightiest ships!

What’s great about Mighty Ships is that while we do get to learn about a few cruise ships along the way, the show actually covers all types of sea vessels – probably some that you never even knew existed!

Mighty Ships lets you in on all the secrets these vessels hold throughout their voyages; from preparations made for the journey to the voyage itself, and ending when their job has been successfully delivered.

While the previous shows primarily display the crew’s interactions with each other and the guests, Mighty Ships focuses heavily on the operational and technical side of running the ships.

It even goes so far as to computer-generated animations in order to better explain to its audience certain aspects of the ship that cannot be seen or visited in person. Interlaced with that are interviews with the crew as they provide more information about the ship as well as what life is like aboard it.

Mighty Cruise Ships, Discovery Channel Canada (2014 – 2022)

Mighty Ships evolved into two spin-offs; the first was Mighty Planes that aired for four seasons and employed the same format while following various types of aircrafts. The second premiered in 2014 and was a more direct spin-off of the parent series: Mighty Cruise Ships .

Everyone wants to know what happens on these huge, extravagant, cruise ships and Mighty Cruise Ships definitely lets us witness the lavish life without having to pay the thousands of dollars that come with a cruise ship ticket.

Each episode brings us aboard a brand new ship – each with its own features, amenities, and cutting-edge technology that only seems to get better as the episodes progress.

These ships are built for their destinations, whether intended to endure the harsh cold temperatures and narrow passageways of the Nordic fjords or to breeze through the coastlines of Scotland.

On board, the ships cater to every aesthetic too – interested in Viking history? The Viking Sea is the boat for you. Looking for an adrenaline rush at sea? Cruise Ship Killers, Justice Network (2020 – 2022)

This next show takes a much darker turn than those that came before – if you couldn’t tell right away from the title Cruise Ship Killers . If you’ve got an interest in true crime, you’re definitely going to want to add this show to your list.

However, if that’s not your thing and you’re the kind to get paranoid pretty quickly, maybe you should skip this one. I say that because one thing’s for sure: Cruise Ship Killers might make you second guess your desire to go on a cruise – ever.

This true-crime documentary series tells the stories of people who got on a cruise expecting to have the vacation of a lifetime – only to never return or be heard from again.

Each episode will keep you guessing right from the get-go: was the businessman’s death foul play? Was the young woman kidnapped? Did he fall overboard? Did the missing woman just get off at one port and decide to stay to start a new life? There’s just no telling where each episode of Cruise Ship Killers will take us.

The Cruise, BBC One (1998)

Not to be confused with the ITV reality show of the same name previously mentioned, BBC One’s The Cruise is an observational documentary series that followed the crew of the luxury cruise ship named Galaxy as it set off on its maiden voyage through the Caribbean – including a pit stop in Jamaica on Christmas Day!

While we have a chance to witness the personal lives of the crew onboard Galaxy, we also get a glimpse into how the crew handles the pressures of everyday operations on the luxury cruise. From dealing with a confrontational passenger at the ship’s casino to facing a whole congregation of born-again Christians, you truly never know what challenges a new day will bring. Not to mention the preparations for their new entertainment show!

Most notably, The Cruise is what paved the way for singer Jane McDonald, who was then an entertainer for Galaxy. After the show, she went on to become a recording artist, actress, media personality, and TV presenter. The Cruise even released two additional specials with Jane in the spotlight!

CRUISE SHIP TRAVEL SHOWS

Cruising with jane mcdonald, channel 5 (2017 – 2020).

I have always thought that hosts of these lifestyle-type shows have the best job in the world – those that get to do food and restaurant reviews, explore different countries and cultures, and now, even experience cruise ships!

Remember Jane McDonald from the previous show, The Cruise ? Well, she’s back for more sea-worthy adventures on the Channel 5 travel series, Cruising with Jane McDonald , where she films a travelogue showcasing the very best aspects of the ship, both in terms of service and aesthetics.

Right off the bat, she starts off with a mega-cruise ship called the MSC Divina through the Caribbean, where over 4000 passengers make the most of their holidays on the ship and at the port.

Throughout its six seasons, Jane travels the world one cruise ship at a time, truly living the best life.

The Voyager With Josh Garcia, NBC (2016 – 2019)

NBC’s The Voyager with Josh Garcia also follows the travelogue format through the eyes of traveler and host, Josh Garcia. However, instead of focusing solely on the experience with cruise ships, The Voyager provides a wider perspective of the world as a whole.

Josh takes his viewers with him as he travels the globe by ocean, disembarking at every port with the intention of discovering the nooks and crannies of each culture he encounters.

Each episode is a learning experience not just for Josh, but for us as well. He speaks with the locals, learns about native and regional traditions from cultural experts, and fearlessly tries the local cuisine every chance he gets.

Through The Voyager with Josh Garcia , our global wanderlust is ignited, and our traveling bucket list just keeps getting longer and longer!

SCRIPTED CRUISE SHIP TV SHOWS

High seas, netflix (2019 – 2020).

High Seas , also known as Alta Mar in its original Spanish, is a Netflix original series that aired for three seasons beginning in 2019.

Unlike the modern cruise ship settings that we’ve seen so far, High Seas takes place on a luxury ocean liner in the 1940s!

Sisters Eva and Carolina Villanueva climb aboard the Barbara de Braganza liner as it voyages from Spain to Brazil. Unbeknownst to the other passengers and crew, they’ve smuggled a mysterious woman onboard after she pleaded for their help.

Things go terribly awry when the woman is thrown overboard and Eva, a curious and headstrong writer, launches an investigation into the mysterious goings-on on the ship.

Eventually, both she and her sister discover shocking secrets that tie into their family’s dark past. Who are they supposed to believe?

Sadly, the fourth season of High Seas was originally planned to continue the series but was subsequently canceled in mid-2020.

Wreck, BBC Three (2022 – present)

One of the newest shows on this list of top cruise ship shows is BBC Three’s horror-comedy series Wreck .

The series follows Jamie Walsh, a nineteen-year-old who takes a job on a board cruise ship called The Sacramentum to figure out what happened to his sister, who went missing from the same ship three months ago.

As Jamie learns the ins and outs of living and working on a ship, he befriends other crew members in order to help with his investigation into the disappearance of his sister and how a recent attack on a crew member could be connected to it.

The Love Boat, ABC (1977 – 1986)

The Love Boat is a scripted rom-com/drama series that aired on ABC more than 30 years ago! However, when watching this series you’ll find that a lot of the scenarios portrayed are still reflected, to some extent, in the reality shows on this list as well.

The show takes us on board the MS Pacific Princess, a luxury passenger cruise ship. Captain Merrill Stubing is at the helm, guiding not only the ship himself but his crew members as they attempt to deal with a new passenger’s antics in each episode.

These crew members included the cruise directors, photographer, purser, bartender, doctor, and eventually, even a troupe of dancers!

The Love Boat was based on the original made-for-TV movie of the same name, which in turn was based on the non-fiction book Love Boats.

The reason the scenarios in this show seem so true to life is because the book was written by Jeraldine Saunders, a real-life passenger cruise ship director !

Avenue 5, HBO (2020 – 2022)

Science fiction and dark comedy collide in this HBO original, bringing cruise ships to a place you never could have imagined: space. Yup, you read that right! Titled Avenue 5 , this is also the name of the interplanetary cruise ship owned by Herman Judd (played by Josh Gad) and captained by Ryan Clark (played by Hugh Laurie).

While setting off on an eight-week-long cruise, Avenue 5 experiences technical difficulties that set off a devastating chain of events: a temporary loss of gravity and the Chief Engineer’s accidental death, causing the ship to veer off-course.

When it’s estimated to take three years for them to return to Earth, Captain Clark and his crew need to figure out how to keep their passengers calm, collected, and safe – even as mishaps are happening left and right. Will they ever be able to make it back home?

'The Last Cruise': HBO documentary reveals when the Diamond Princess cruise vacation turned into a COVID-19 nightmare

"One team, one dream" is the saying between crew members on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, but now we get a glimpse into the moment that dream turned into a COVID-19 nightmare in a new HBO documentary The Last Cruise (debuting on Crave on Tuesday, March 30 at 9:00 p.m. ET) .

When the Diamond Princess cruise set sail from Yokohama, Japan on Jan. 20, 2020, with 2,666 passengers and 1,045 crew members, there were still a lot of unknowns about COVID-19. In 40 minutes, The Last Cruise showcases videos taken by both passengers and the crew for a first-hand account of what it was like to be on the ship as concerns around COVID-19 became more serious.

After the first COVID-19 case was identified in the U.S., while the ship had been travelling around Asia, American passengers Cheryl and Paul Molesky were told by Paul's daughter to not get off the ship in Hong Kong because there was a virus going around. But there weren't a lot of concerns about the virus for anyone on the cruise at that point.

Eventually, cruise employees were taking everyone's temperatures, with several passenger calling it simply an "inconvenience" to their vacation. When the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed on the ship at the beginning of February, the priority was still to just monitor for anyone else who had cold or flu-like symptoms.

Initial screening by the Japanese Ministry of Health found that 10 people had tested positive for COVID-19. The ship was put into quarantine in Yokohama and a second set of samples found that 10 more people were positive. Masks were then delivered to everyone's staterooms.

'The rich would be taken care of'

While the passengers stayed in their rooms, the crew still had to work. Phones had to be answered, cleaning had to be done, food had to be made and delivered.

In the documentary Maruja Daya, a pastry chef, says she felt like "the rich would be taken care of," expressing concerns that the crew was still working when they were also at risk of being infected.

Dede, a dishwasher who was particularly excited about being able to work on a cruise ship, highlights that there was no separation between crew members that were infected and those who weren't. The crew was also scared to report that they were sick or even to complain about the conditions.

Sonali Thakkar, who worked security on the ship, reveals that as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the ship continued to rise, there was a rumour that there was a plan to sink the ship with people on board, which was frightening for her.

Knowing what we know now about COVID-19 and the spread of the virus on this cruise ship in particular, it makes you cringe seeing some of the passengers complain about the food they are receiving and the impact of the quarantine on the hospitality of the staff.

It's revealed that at least a third of the crew members who tested positive for COVID-19 by around the Feb. 9 mark didn't have any symptoms. That's when it was discovered that asymptomatic spread was possible.

The crew decks have no windows so it was incredibly isolating for cruise employees in particular. While everyone was stuck on the ship, the crew was below deck, not even knowing what time of day it was unless they were looking at a clock. They just wanted some fresh air.

Near the end of the documentary, we see the American passengers getting on a plane to the U.S. near the end of February, after some expressed concerns about possibly catching COVID-19 on the aircraft if they disembark the ship. In the middle of the plane, with passengers from the Diamond Princess on board, you see a plastic curtain enclosure. One of the couples featured in the documentary reveals that's where people who were COVID-19 positive were sitting throughout the journey.

A total of 712 people contracted COVID-19 on the Diamond Princess cruise ship and 14 died.

While COVID-19 still rages on, The Last Cruise makes you think about all the progress made throughout the pandemic, but all the things that are still unknown about the virus, including asymptomatic spread. It also highlights the importance of support for essential workers.

Although it happened more than a year ago, even if you're aware of the events, it's still incredibly eerie to see how quickly the virus spread and it makes you uncomfortable to see delays to measures like wearing masks.

When the U.S. government studied what transpired on the ship, it was determined that COVID-19 was airborne and spread through asymptomatic carriers. Ultimately, The Last Cruise stresses that the CDC in the U.S. took more than a month to recommend masking to prevent COVID-19 spread. Canada's chief public health officer officially called for the use of non-medical face masks when a two-metre distance cannot be maintained on May 20.

While many might think going on a cruise would be the last thing anyone on the Diamond Princess would want to do again, one woman, who was actually sent to a hospital because she tested positive for COVID-19 on the ship, said she and her husband would definitely go on a cruise again, with another one already booked.

As Cohen explained, this documentary showcases “passionate people and cool stuff” – and it really delivers on that promise!

And producing this documentary was quite the process! Like most documentaries, the production crew was lean. Just half a dozen crew members handled the scenes on land in the United States or Germany, while two crews of the same size filmed during the transatlantic crossing.

While filming, the crew has only a very loose shot list to go off of, which they coordinated with Walt Disney Imagineering to ensure key moments were captured. Largely, the documentary team relies on shooting scenes – for instance, Anthony Mackie’s green screen shoot for Worlds of Marvel – and then bringing that footage together to tell a larger story. In the case of building both the documentary and the Disney Wish, there was a great story to tell, starting with the physical building of the ship, layering in all of the extras that “plus it” for Guests of Disney Cruise Line, and using plenty of new technology on board. And that was all done in the midst of the pandemic, too!

Filmmakers Worked Closely with Imagineers, Too

Of course, no Disney documentary would be complete without a little magic of its own! In order to tell the full story of the Disney Wish and bring its incredible story to life, we learned that the filmmakers and Walt Disney Imagineering worked closely to build relationships and trust. This allowed the two teams to show viewers things they never thought possible, like an inside look at the sea trials that take place prior to the first Guest sailings.

And of course, the filmmakers did plenty of research, too. Since shipbuilding takes a long time, there’s often a lot of waiting around. The crew used time lapse cameras to show off the action that could takes hours (or even days) to actually complete. And with their bit of downtime, the documentary team got some firsthand experience sailing with Disney Cruise Line by taking a trip aboard the Disney Fantasy. This better enabled them to share what a Disney Cruise is like from a Guest’s perspective.

It sank 112 years ago Monday, but our obsession with the RMS Titanic continues.

History's most famous ship slipped beneath the North Atlantic at 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912 , but we continue to explore its maiden voyage, iceberg, sinking and undersea decay through a seemingly endless stream of photographs, books , documentaries and movies , and museum exhibits.

Fascination has led to tragedy. A submersible carrying five passengers to view the Titanic imploded near the wreck , killing all aboard, in June 2023.

It also has brought technological advances. In May 2023, a new type of digital scanning, using multiple images, gave us a three-dimensional view of the ship as it would look if it were lifted out of the water .

Why are people drawn to Titanic?

"There isn’t a simple answer," says Karen Kamuda, president of the Titanic Historical Society , which operates the Titanic Museum in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts.

Those who join the society are of "all ages and occupations, and their interests are multivariable," Kamuda says. Aside from their fascination with Titanic and its passengers and crew, their curiosity might include the sister ships Olympic and Britannic, the White Star Line, artifacts, and TV and movies.

"James Cameron’s 1997 film, ' Titanic ,' opened up a brand-new interest," Kamuda says. "The internet has helped spread the story worldwide."

Here are a few things you may not know about Titanic:

Titanic traveled less than 3,000 miles

Titanic was built at the Harland & Wolff shipbuilding company in Belfast, Ireland. After outfitting and sea trials, the ship left port for her maiden voyage.

From Belfast to the fatal iceberg strike, Titanic traveled about 2,555 nautical miles, or 2,940 land miles:

April 2, 1912 | 8 p.m.: Titanic leaves Belfast, sails to Southhampton, England (577 nm).

April 10, 1912 | noon: Titanic leaves Southhampton, sails to Cherbourg, France (88 nm).

April 10, 1912 | 8:10 p.m.: Titanic leaves Cherbourg, sails to Queenstown ( now known as Cobh ), Ireland (341 nm).

April 11, 1912 | 1:30 p.m.: Titanic leaves Queenstown for New York.

April 14, 1912 | 11:40 p.m.: Titanic strikes iceberg 1,549 nm from Queenstown.

April 15, 1912 | 2:20 a.m.: Titanic sinks about 400 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada.

Titanic's lifeboats were not filled to capacity

The largest piece of wreckage recovered from Titanic, above, is a 15-ton section of the hull measuring 26 feet by 12 feet. It's on display at Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas

The hull section was part of the starboard side of the ship , between the third and fourth funnels. It was lifted to the surface in 1998.

Video shows Coast Guard rescuing pregnant woman from Disney cruise

The 35-year-old woman was experiencing a medical emergency aboard the ship and had to be airlifted to get help.

A pregnant passenger aboard Disney Fantasy had to be airlifted from the cruise ship after experiencing health complications.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the cruise line requested medevac services with its San Juan, Puerto Rico, sector Monday morning due to the 35-year-old woman requiring "a higher level of medical care ashore." Soon after, a Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft from Miami made their way toward the ship's spot in the Atlantic Ocean, 180 miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

Video shows the aircraft approaching above the ship before a rescuer lowers down onto it by rope. The Coast Guard said that was the Jayhawk crew's "rescue swimmer," who prepared a "rescue basket and litter to safely hoist the patient and cruise ship doctor" aboard the chopper.

Seven people can be seen in the footage carrying the patient on a stretcher toward an area where one team member attached her and the cot to a hanging rope. She was then lifted to the helicopter door and brought safely inside.

Emergency medical personnel local to San Juan, Puerto Rico, met the Coast Guard aircrew and the patient at the city's Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport, then transported the woman to a local hospital, the military body said.

While no passengers were injured, the cruise line confirms that two firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.

"Our crew was able to quickly, safely and efficiently execute a long-range MEDEVAC for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required," said Lt. Cmdr. Todd Stephens. "This case demonstrates the value of good crew resource management and the capabilities of our Jayhawk helicopter."

"The competency displayed by the Disney Fantasy crew and the Coast Guard personnel and units involved made all the difference," said Ensign Michael Riccio, Coast Guard Sector San Juan operations unit leader for the case.

The woman's name and the reason for her medical emergency were not made clear as of Tuesday evening.

Disney Cruise Lines' website states it has a doctor and nurse on call 24/7 in the event of medical emergencies onboard, while a daily clinic is available for non-emergent care.

It also says pregnant women are permitted to sail with the company, but those who are past their 24th week or who will enter their 24th week during the voyage cannot be permitted passage due to safety concerns.

"Neither a doctor's medical statement nor a waiver of liability will be accepted," the website states. "In addition, Disney Cruise Line cannot be held responsible or liable for any complications relating to pregnancy at any stage."

Woman allegedly left children, 8 and 6, ‘home alone for six days so she could go on a cruise’

A Texas woman has appeared before a judge after being accused of leaving her two young children alone to go on a cruise.

29-year-old Lakesha Woods Williams is accused of abandoning her two children , aged 6 and 8, to go on a cruise to Puerto Rico, leaving the minors to fend for themselves for five days.

The judge she appeared before earlier this week called her actions 'egregious' and kept her bond at $25,000.

Williams was arrested last week, shortly after she returned from her trip.

The woman was charged with abandoning a child with intent to return after residents at her apartment building in the Memorial area of Houston called authorities worried about the kids.

A mother has been arrested after allegedly leaving her two young children alone at home while she went on a cruise.

According to court records, neighbours claimed this wasn't the first time Williams had left her children unsupervised.

Concerns were raised when neighbours allegedly saw Williams leave with luggage and bags on April 4, and noticed she didn't return for several days after that.

Police officers were called to Williams' apartment for a welfare check on the two children on April 9.

"On April 9, deputies found the children alone in the apartment, and they told deputies their mother was on a cruise," the Harris County Constable Precinct 5 said in its news release via PEOPLE Magazine.

"Paramedics and CPS were called to the scene to check on the kids health and safety."

Lakesha Woods Williams is accused of abandoning her 6 and 8-year-old.

Speaking with the police, the kids said they didn't know where their mother was. This happened after they'd been allegedly left on their own for at least five days.

The officer called to the scene found the apartment in disarray, saying it smelled of urine and had leftover food all over the place.

Deputies also found a web camera and a mobile phone that the children said their mother used to check in on them whilst she was away. When the officers contacted Williams, she was allegedly uncooperative and changed her story about where she was.

She was arrested on April 10, not long after she returned from the cruise.

After Williams appeared in court on Monday (April 15), the magistrate reviewed her bond and kept it at $25k. They also issued a protective order that prevents the woman from communicating with or being near her daughter and son.

The children remain in the care of William's sister.

"We take these child abuse cases very seriously. Even if you're acting negligently, it's not an excuse," Asst. District Attorney Keegan Childers said on Monday (via ABC13.com ).

Russia pounds Ukraine’s cities and front lines as air defences dwindle

Russia destroys Ukrainian power stations and defences as an expert warns Kyiv’s troops are ‘utterly exhausted’.

Ukraine’s dwindling supply of air defence missiles enabled Russia to devastate its energy infrastructure with ever-increasing effectiveness during the past week, while its artillery shell rationing allowed Moscow’s forces to continue a slow advance on the ground.

Making matters worse, Ukraine recorded no counterattacks against energy or military targets inside Russian territory.

Meanwhile, US congressional Republicans, who have effectively frozen aid to Ukraine since December, mulled over how and when to table a new bill to approve $60bn in aid requested by the administration of President Joe Biden.

Dmytro Kuleba, the Ukrainian foreign minister, said his embattled country was urgently demanding long-range Patriot air defence batteries it needs from European NATO allies, rather than the United States.

“Nice and quiet diplomacy didn’t work,” he told the Washington Post, saying he was on a mission to effectively force European governments with more than 100 idling batteries to give up seven – part of a larger plan to ultimately source 26.

Germany said it was immediately transferring one battery and would look into transferring a short-range IRIS-T missile battery.

And Kuleba is not just guilting Europeans.

At NATO’s 75th anniversary, he aimed a barb at the entire alliance.

“I’m sorry to spoil the birthday party, but who can believe that the mightiest military alliance in the world cannot find seven batteries of Patriots to provide them to the only country in the world that is fighting ballistic attacks every day?”

A Russian bombardment using 82 missiles and drones destroyed the Trypilska thermal power station in Kyiv on Thursday, April 11. It was only the second time in the war that an entire power plant was taken out, and the first in the capital, which is supposedly the most heavily defended from air attacks.

Ukraine’s rate of success in countering threats is simply not enough to prevent massive destruction, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told PBS.

“Electricity in the Kyiv region depends on [Trypilska],” he said. “Eleven missiles were headed towards it. The first seven, we took down. Four destroyed Trypilska.”

It has been a similar story in other recent Russian air attacks.

On the night of March 22, seven out of 44 cruise missiles and all 15 ballistic missiles penetrated Ukraine’s defences, damaging dozens of energy facilities in the largest attack against Ukrainian energy infrastructure since February 2022.

A week later, 11 out of 37 ballistic and cruise missiles penetrated defences, damaging more power plants.

An analysis by the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, showed that between February and March Ukraine’s interception rate of Russian missiles fell from 60 percent to 50 percent, and suggested it would fall further.

“The increased effectiveness of Russian air strikes does not appear to result from the use of more missiles and drones in each strike,” the ISW said in its report. “Instead, Russian forces are exploiting the degradation of Ukraine’s air defence umbrella caused by continued delays in Western security assistance.”

Russian ground assaults

A similar story has been unfolding on the ground.

Since Russian forces took the eastern Ukrainian town of Avdiivka on February 17, they have pressed an advantage and inched forward, swallowing up villages.

Russian forces made more marginal gains west of Avdiivka and Bakhmut, which fell last May.

Much of the pressure fell on Chasiv Yar, a small town west of Bakhmut.

Ukrainian commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyii said Russia aimed to capture it by May 9, Russia’s Victory Day holiday.

If it fell, it would open the way for attacks on what military analysts term the “fortress towns” of Kostiantynivka, Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk in western Donetsk.

Syrskyii said on Saturday that the situation had “significantly worsened in recent days” because Russian units were again launching large mechanised assaults using “dozens of tanks and [armoured personnel carriers]”.

“This is facilitated by warm, dry weather, which made most of the open areas of the terrain accessible to tanks,” said Syrskyii. “Despite significant losses, the enemy is increasing its efforts by using new units on armoured vehicles, thanks to which it periodically achieves tactical success.”

He said he had ordered reinforcements of drones, electronic warfare systems to counter enemy drones, and antitank missiles.

On the other hand, Russian forces were limiting manpower around Bakhmut, said Oleg Kalashnikov, a Ukrainian army spokesman, using company-sized groups at most to avoid detection by Ukrainian drones.

And even though Russian formations were making marginal advances, often throughout the week, Ukrainian forces pushed them back again. But that, said military experts, came at a high cost.

“War is a physical human endeavour and you have a force that is utterly exhausted, not slightly fatigued,” said Ruth Harris, head of military research at the RAND Corporation, a US Air Force think tank.

“It’s a heavily attritional war. It’s messy, it’s bloody, there is nothing glorious about this,” she said.

In addition to its weakening air defences and what Zelenskyy described as a 10-to-one disadvantage in artillery rounds on the ground, Ukraine also faces hundreds of glide bombs a week. These are massive inertial munitions with payloads of up to 1,500kg fitted with fins for increased range.

“The glide bombs that are currently used are hugely devastating,” Harris told the Delphi Economic Forum in Greece.

“They’re cheap to make. They are pretty damn accurate and they can be adapted really quickly. They are fast and [the Russians] have a lot of them.”

“This is a war of mass cost and pace. That’s the operational factor on the ground.”

Zelenskyy told the German magazine Bild that Ukraine was using domestically produced drones to somewhat make up for the dearth in ammunition, but that these were not a replacement because their range is smaller and their payloads lighter.

He also said he could not rule out a broadening of the front with a new Russian assault on the cities of Sumy and Kharkiv, only 30km (17 miles) from the Russian border, which have in recent weeks been pounded by missiles, drones and glide bombs.

If NATO’s reputation was receiving a battering, the incipient military network Russia was forming appeared to be on the rise.

Russia has successfully sourced artillery shells from North Korea, drones from Iran and, according to Bloomberg, machine tools and electronic components from China.

All four countries, NATO’s supreme allied commander in Europe Christopher Cavoli told the US House, were in the process of forming “interlocking, strategic partnerships in an attempt to challenge the existing order”.

In terms of harnessing their defence industrial might, they appeared to have the upper hand.
