More About Dublin
Dublin mixes elegant Georgian buildings, wrought-iron bridges, a battalion of booksellers, and more than 1,000 pubs. The most appealing thing about Dublin isn't the sights, or even the great pubs and restaurants. It's the people. The Dubs are fun, funny, and irreverent, and most of them love nothing better than talking to strangers. So make a point of rubbing elbows with the locals. The pub is a natural spot to do this, but almost any place will do. Ask for directions on a street corner (even if you don't need them), and you might be on your way to a brilliant conversation.

Summer offers a real lift, as the natives spill out of the pubs into the slew of sidewalk cafés and open-air restaurants. The week around St. Patrick's Day (March 17) is, naturally, a nonstop festival of parades, cultural happenings, and "hooleys" (long nights of partying). Christmas in Dublin seems to last a month, and the city's old-style illuminations match the genteel, warm mood of the locals.
A sweater is a must year round; even summer nights can get chilly. Dublin gets its share of rain (though a lot less than other parts of Ireland), so an umbrella is a good investment.
Top Experiences
Guinness Storehouse : Ireland’s number 1 visitor attraction. Created in the 1700’s by Arthur Guinness, the ebullition house is now a multimedia exhibition.
St. Patrick’s and Christ Church Cathedrals : These two cathedrals are a 10-minute walk apart. St. Patrick’s dates back to 1220. Christ Church has hosted pilgrims for almost 1,000 years. Both showcase medieval art and architecture.
Book of Kells and Trinity College : The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript of four gospels of the Christian New Testament. Its illustrations are majestic and legendary. Located at Trinity College, there are also art exhibits and beautiful campus.
Irish Emigration Museum : Following the journeys of over 10 million people who left Ireland throughout history. The Irish Family History Centre is also here if you want to delve into your Irish past. Most of Dublin’s museums are free and there are many worth looking at.
Dublin Castle : Built over the ruins of a Danish Viking fortress, this castle began construction about 1230. It has morphed many times over the centuries depending on its uses and doesn’t resemble a castle in looks. But is used for every large state event and you can take a guided tour.

Travel Tips

- Plan your Dublin trips ahead, as popular attractions in the city can get crowded, especially in the peak season. Booking tickets at least two to four weeks in advance can save time and avoid disappointment.
- While on a Dublin food tour , make sure to try the local cuisine, including traditional dishes such as Irish stew, colcannon, and soda bread, as well as fresh seafood available in the city's many seafood restaurants.
- Pack a raincoat or umbrella and comfortable footwear when traveling in Dublin, where the weather can turn at any time.

Dublin Tours, Vacations, Trips & Travel Packages
Dublin is a fairly compact city and a great place to explore on foot when on an Ireland vacation. You will be immediately impressed with the lovely Georgian-style architecture as well as the interesting streets filled with landscaped gardens, small shops, restaurants, traditional pubs and picturesque public squares. The city has a reputation for friendliness. Just stop anyone anywhere and you will be greeted immediately with great bonhomie. It’s no wonder Dublin has been voted “The Friendliest City in Europe ” and is known as “The City of a Thousand Welcomes”.
Interspersed throughout the city are some very attractive small parks and gardens which add a certain serenity and charm to Dublin. Phoenix Park is a very extensive park and one of the largest in Europe. It offers everything from a zoo to a small fort, a botanical garden, jogging trails and much more on an Ireland vacation
Dublin has derived a well-deserved reputation as a “literary city”. Dublin has produced many exceptional Internationally acclaimed writers. One of its most famous is James Joyce who, in his works, has immortalized the city and its people. The Dublin Writers Museum, which is well worth a visit, will remind you of how blessed the city has been with its large number of exceptional novelists and playwrights. There is also a museum dedicated to James Joyce which can be visited on Ireland trips.
The Abbey Theatre first opened its doors in 1904. Despite losing its original building to a fire in 1951, it has remained active to the present day. It was the first state-subsidized theatre in the English-speaking world. The Abbey has served as a nursery for many of the leading Irish playwrights and actors of the 20th century.
For culture buffs, one must, on Ireland vacations, visit Trinity College Library where the Book of Kells is housed. This book, believed to have been written around 800 AD, contains the four Gospels of the New Testament. Also, the National Museum of Ireland will be a must for those interested in Archaeology. Imposing Dublin Castle, a landmark in the city dates from the 18 th Century although the site is much older. It was the seat of Government for the British until 1922.
Other points of interest include the Guinness Factory or rather the Guinness Storehouse within the brewery where not only will you enjoy a customized tour showing the brewing process but also the history of a company which dates back to 1759. After the tour, one is provided with a complimentary “pint” in a 360-degree panoramic lounge with amazing views of the rooftops of the city. The Jameson Distillery offers whiskey enthusiasts an opportunity to tour the distillery including a tasting. Visiting a jail may not be at the top of everyone’s wish list but Kilmainham Gaol which is now a museum, played an important part in Irish history as many leaders of Irish rebellions were imprisoned and some executed in the prison. Who can resist a visit to a venue called the National Leprechaun Museum which is dedicated to Irish mythology and folklore? You will find yourself in a leprechaun-sized world and take a journey to the end of the rainbow to see if the elusive crock of gold really exists.
For evening entertainment, there are many typical Dublin pubs almost all with their own individual character. One area specializing in evening attractions is Temple Bar, a cobblestoned cultural enclave of galleries, restaurants and hopping pubs, all to be enjoyed on Ireland tours.
Extend your Stay

Dublin Vacations
One of Dublin’s most famous native sons also happens to be one of the most quoted people in history: Oscar Wilde is credited with such gems as “I can resist anything except temptation.” He would know, because his hometown is simply filled with them. While you won’t find Lucky Charms served in the restaurants, and the pubs don’t serve green beer, a trip to Dublin does have plenty of delicious food and tempting brews. After all, this city practically invented shepherd’s pie and dark, creamy stouts. And once your taste buds have been satiated, you’ll find indulgences for your eyes and ears, as well—not to mention your soul. Take in a recital at St. Patrick's Cathedral or take a stroll through the lush landscapes of St. Stephen's Green. A Dublin vacation package is your ticket to thousands of years of history and culture. It is time to get going to the “Emerald Isle.”
Hotels in Dublin
First things first, traveler. You need a place to lay your head and let visions of leprechauns and pots o’ gold dance in your head. You’ll thank your lucky stars there are so many options to add on to package deals in Dublin.
- The Westbury Hotel is five-star luxury right in the middle of it all. Get cultured at the area’s art galleries before taking in a show at the Gaiety Theatre.
- Ashling Hotel Dublin is another five-star beauty located a bit farther north, near the historic Ha’penny Bridge and the world-famous Temple Bar.
- The Westin Dublin is in the western part of town, near the National Museum of Ireland and Phoenix Park, known as “Dublin’s playground”—this park is so large, it even has resident deer!
- Castle Hotel is rated as family-friendly thanks to available child care services, free breakfast, and complimentary cribs. The whole crew is welcome here!
Major Attractions
Begin your Dublin vacation with an eerie stroll through Kilmainham Gaol, the 18th-century prison. Once a sign of oppression and tyranny during the struggle for Irish independence, it is now one of the country’s most important landmarks. History lovers will surely get their fill then, literary types can learn their own sort of history by stepping into the James Joyce Centre. Another of Ireland’s natives, he may have said “A man’s errors are his portals of discovery,” but there are no mistakes here. See a family tree of editions for “Ulysses,” a copy of Joyce’s death mask, and short documentary films detailing the author’s life. When your personal tour is over, slide behind the wheel of a rental car to make the 9-mile drive down to Dalkey for fresh seafood, and, of course, a cool Guinness.
There is yet another famous author to be found buried at St. Patrick's Cathedral: Jonathan Swift. Take a tour to learn about all the other incredible history of Ireland’s largest church, and be sure to stay for the evening service. The harmonious voices and organ notes of the cathedral’s famous Choral Evensong have moved many guests over the years. Another beautiful experience is St. Stephen's Green, the city’s central park. Enjoy a coffee and scone at an outdoor cafe before you browse the shopping arcade, then stroll past the buskers on your way to befriend the swans in the pond. It’s the perfect relaxation spot for those on a family vacation in Dublin, too.
Festivals and Events
A long weekend of fun, laughs, and Irish stout sounds excellent, doesn’t it? The Cat Laughs Comedy Festival is held on the first weekend in June, and it’s worth the trip. But of course, you know what the biggest event of them all is. Look into deals in March and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with the locals. The festival held in Dublin every year is a sight to see, with traditional Irish marching bands, more Guinness and food pairings than you thought possible, and a spectacular parade that draws nearly 500,000 attendees. Don’t just imagine spending this glorious holiday in the country that invented it—live it with a vacation in Dublin.
This is one case where you shouldn’t listen to James Joyce you don’t need to make any mistakes in order to discover the spectacular deals on Travelocity. Hearing fiddles in person is tempting, so browse Travelocity now to find the best Dublin vacation packages. We think your luck is changing already!

Best time for travel shades of ireland.
While just about any month is great to visit Ireland, there are a few prime times of the year for the Shades of Ireland tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.
Spring: There is no better time to be in Ireland than March, for Saint Patrick’s Day! With spring weather, places like the Cliffs of Moher feel a bit warmer and have a clearer view for photographs.
Summer: Summer is a very busy time of year, but perfect for enjoying the buzz and excitement of Dublin. As the sun sets late in the evening, longer days mean having more time to explore, and you’ll see the Emerald Isle at its greenest.
Fall: After the summer months, major sites become much less crowded. Enjoy the changing colors and still-moderate temperatures of the rolling hillsides.

7-Day Emerald Explorer Small Group Tour
Our tour guide, Jimmy was excellent. Did his best to make sure we all had a great day. Both local tour guides, both Barry, were great as well. The Aran Island tour was great, the Ross Castle tour was great and the Blarney Castle tour was also great. We loved the town of Kinsale. What a beautiful place.

The Celtic Voyage - Multi-Day - Small Group Tour of Ireland
A great tour led by great people! 10/10 would do this again and recommend it for anyone looking to see Ireland and its beauty!
Wild South - Multi-Day - Small Group Tour of Ireland
The Wild South Tour was an excellent tour overall, very good value! The guides (Diarmuid and Michael) were great. The add-ons were reasonable and well worth the extra cost. We (my husband and I) especially liked the boat trip to the Skellig Islands. There was a lot of time in the van, but we realized that the best sites were far apart, so the travel was necessary. It was okay. We were so glad to see so many beautiful and memorable sites in very congenial company. I have recommended this tour to friends, with one caveat (see below). However, there was one glaring anomaly: the night and hotel in Cork. Our room at the REZz Hotel is the worst I’ve ever encountered. It was tiny, even too tiny for a single, and unbearably hot with no AC or fan. There was no place to sit (seriously, no chairs at all and only one person at a time could sit on the bed because most of it was blocked by a wall!!). No place to open luggage except on the floor in front of the door. Fire hazard. It all looked and felt dirty and kind of creepy. Totally UNACCEPTABLE! Breakfast featured packaged cookies/bars and half-rotten fruit. I was quite alarmed and worried about the rest of the Wild South tour! Thank goodness this was an anomaly. The rest of our accommodations were excellent — as good or better than the Ashling Hotel for which I paid $300/night for the night before and the night after the tour. I was really impressed with all tour accommodations EXCEPT for the Hotel REZz on that first night. I hope Wild & Happy finds another accommodation in Cork for the sake of future travelers.
Kerry Royal
Overall good...don't like showers over tub..dangerous...slip mats essential. Gresham Dublin confusing because of the Reno's. Our tour leader and driver were excellent, but the relief driver for our visit to Dingle was downright scary.
10 Day Wild Irish Experience - Small Group Tour
- Lee, our tour guide/driver, was excellent. He was informative, helpful, humorous and handled the variety of people on his bus well. He helped luggage and arranged meals and tours for the group. -We liked the opportunities for self directed time at some of the stops. -The bus was clean and comfortable. Lee was a great driver. We felt safe in his hands. -The lodgings were very nice. The breakfasts were good and plentiful.
- €99 deposit on some dates Some departure dates offer you the chance to book this tour with a lower deposit.
Best of Ireland (10 Days)
Wonderful informative tour guide.
8 Day Castles & Coast Experience - Small Group Tour
Sean was a perfect guide to have for our trip...knowledgeable, witty, and a great driver! He did a nice job of drawing people into conversation about the trip and what we were seeing. Sometimes it was challenging for me in terms of the amount of walking required...as I have an injury that affects my mobility. But Sean did his best to accommodate me by getting me closer to the site or checking to see if a wheelchair was available at certain locations. Lee drove us to our first location and was also an excellent gracious guide. I was grateful he allowed for a photo stop at Castlebar where my ancestors were from. That wasn't on the schedule...and meant alot to me!
7-Day Great Atlantic Adventure Small Group Tour
I had the most incredible time (even though I'm completely exhausted). Overland Tours and our guide, Eoin, were incredible. There was a minor hiccup with the vehicle but even with that little issue it did not put a damper on our trip and Eoin was a champion getting the issue resolved. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this trip. I see more in my future.
7 Day Ultimate Atlantic Adventure – Small Group Tour
I had such a blast on this tour! While it was only 4 days, it was an incredible way to see the start of the magic that exists on the West Coast of Ireland. Do go with the expectation that the weather may not be great, and do keep those sea sickness tablets at the ready for your ferry ride to the Aran Islands. Despite both of these things, be prepared for some stunning scenery, and an itinerary that is a good blend of outdoor activities, free time, hearty food, drinks, and wonderful insight to Irish culture.
Focus on Ireland (Classic, 7 Days)
Fantastic tour. Gregg looked after needs, worked tirelessly and ensured that all important points and places were covered. Great personality, very personable, knowledgeable and outgoing.
5-Day Spectacular South and West small group Tour of Ireland
My first ever tour….simply spectacular! Tour guide went above & beyond. Tour buddies were amazing! Will definitely do this again!!
Emerald Isle
Ir was a great trip overall.
5-Day Escape to the South West Small-Group Tour from Dublin
What made this tour excellent was out wonderful driver and guide, Peter Boylan. He was thoughtful and helpful and did outstanding commentary along the way, filling us in on farming methods and Iriish history. When we had been unable to see the Cliffs of Mohr because of rain, he took us instead to the spectacular Kerry Cliffs. And there were other thoughtful adjustments and always interesting places to stop for breaks. He was just a genuine and intelligen guide and kept us in good humour too. The accommodation was what I’d expected but it qould have been nice for us all to be closer to make it easier to eat together in the evenings.zMurphyu’s in Killarney was the outstanding accommodation for me. I shall always cherish memories of the beautiful Irish landscape and this wonderful tour.
What people love about Ireland Tours from Dublin
Mike was amazing! We had such a great group of people, Mike was so full of knowledge about the history and culture of Ireland, and it was so laid back. We got to explore each destination at a leisurely pace and enjoyed most evenings checking out the local bars. Highly recommend!
The entire trip was wonderful, very well organized, and satisfying. Peter Flood was an excellent tour guide. He was as knowledgeable as could be, funny, and helpful; and really seems to love what he does.
The tour went as planned. The guide was excellent. Recommendations would be to extend the time to 8 or 9 days to maximize two days in Lahinch and Galway to experience more of the culture and scenery. One night in each of the cities does not allow for to that experience.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.
By Aliza Chasan
Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:00 AM EDT / CBS News
A total solar eclipse crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show where and when astronomy fans could see the big event as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.
The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.
About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.
Solar eclipse path of totality map for 2024
The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.
The path of totality included portions of the following states:
- Pennsylvania
- New Hampshire
Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.
Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :
- San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
- Austin, Texas
- Waco, Texas
- Dallas, Texas
- Little Rock, Arkansas
- Indianapolis, Indiana
- Dayton, Ohio
- Cleveland, Ohio
- Buffalo, New York
- Rochester, New York
- Syracuse, New York
- Burlington, Vermont
Map of when the solar eclipse reached totality across its path
The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.
NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also checked their ZIP code on NASA's map to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.
How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?
While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.
NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.
Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?
Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.
You could have checked the latest forecast for your location with our partners at The Weather Channel .
Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?
Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA.
Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.
What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?
The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.
Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.
The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.
