U. S. Atlantic Coast Cruises

From Florida to Maine and beyond, a U.S. Atlantic Coast cruise is going to give you a great opportunity to discover America. On this cruise you can visit bustling cities like Miami and Boston, where there are unending attractions such as South Beach and the Freedom Trail. You’ll also make stops in smaller ports like Newport, Rhode Island – a cozy town on the water that was home to some of the U.S.’s most wealthy – and Bar Harbor, Maine – a quiet port with stunning scenery and home to Acadia National Park. These cruises may also go into Canada to visit idyllic towns with lots of greenery and lighthouses.

Things to Do on a Cruise to the US Atlantic Coast

As you cruise up or down the U.S. Atlantic Coast you’ll be visiting cities and towns with amazing attractions. Continue reading below for a selection of things to do that are sure to please everyone from the young to the young at heart:

US Atlantic Coast Breakers Mansion of Newport, Rhode Island

  • See the opulent Breakers, a mansion owned by the Vanderbilt family, when you visit Newport Rhode Island. This decadent summer “cottage” was the epitome of the American Dream at the turn of the century.
  • Roll up your pants and check out the beautiful sea glass at Sea Glass Beach in Hamilton, Bermuda. These colorful gems make for amazing photos and perfect souvenirs.

US Atlantic Coast Broadway in New York City

  • Spend an evening at a Sugar Shack. This is a house in Quebec where the sap from the maple trees is transformed into syrup. Here you’ll get a great meal and be entertained by local musicians
  • Experience all the razzle dazzle of Broadway when you visit New York City. You can catch a performance of a crowd-pleasing musical or go deep with a Tony-winning play.

US Atlantic Coast Beach chairs along South Beach, Miami

  • Lay out in the sun on Miami’s South Beach. This shoreline spot is a major draw for international visitors.
  • Think you’re pretty smart? Well then you should go to Harvard. Take a tour of America’s oldest college when you visit Boston.

Both of these ports are major cities that offer travelers a lot of transportation options and they also have lots of attractions. In New York you’ll find the expansive Central Park, the theater district and world renowned art museums like The Met and MoMa. In Montreal you also have great art and amazing history. New England Cruises

The exciting and varied itineraries that make up our New England cruise offerings are a traveler’s smorgasbord of possibilities. From April through October, you can watch the historic area of our country come alive in the Spring, enjoy the sites of Summer, or take in all the colors of Fall foliage.

Our Cruises Consider our Grand New England Trip , which packs a tremendous amount of activity across a wide and delightful range of northeastern towns and landscapes. A roundtrip cruise from Boston, Massachusetts, that calls on ports up and down the New England coastline, you’ll have the opportunity to explore Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, Newport and Bar Harbor, and more — at your leisure or as part of a guided shore excursion.

It’s an 11-day, 10-night adventure aboard the American Constitution that will also bring you up close and personal with inhabitants of the Maine coastline, such as seals, puffins — even whales if the seasons and luck are on your side. Explore New England Islands If island life is more your thing, then there’s a lot to offer in that respect, too. USA River Cruises features trips that focus on a relaxing exploration of the beautiful islands of New England . Nantucket Island and Martha’s Vineyard both contain meadows, white sand beaches, and trails forged by generations of American Indians.

The New England Islands Cruise also features a trip to Block Island, Rhode Island, where the Mohegan Bluffs rise 150 above the ocean. According to The Nature Conservancy, Block Island is one of the ‘Last Great Places on Earth,’ 10 square miles of Northeastern bliss.

While other ports of call may claim it, New England is a boaters history paradise. The America’s Cup Hall of Fame, Summer cottages of Astors and Vanderbilts, and the nation’s first synagogue, library, church steeple, and tavern. Although you don’t have to tour the sites in that order.

After taking in the natural beauty of the area, visiting quaint island villages, hiking to your heart’s content, let us refill your tanks with all local, all fresh seafood for dinner. The islands of New England are a treat for all five senses no matter the time of year. International Tastes Looking for a little taste of the Great White North? Consider the Canada and New England Fall Foliage Cruise. Hugging the Northeastern Seaboard, ports of call include Nova Scotia capital Halifax, the site of Anne Of Green Gables, the so-called “Birthplace of Canada,” and ending in Quebec City. Birthplace of America We also offer Manhattan to Montreal Cruises that land where the Mayflower did, offer hikes through Acadia National Park, and visits to the Newport Avenue of Mansions. Our Historic Treasures of the East Coast visits Philadelphia, Baltimore, and other ports of call that were vital in the forming of America. Wherever You Want to Go, We’re There There is so much to see and do and enjoy in the New England area, so USA River Cruises offers a variety of trips from March through October to give our clients exactly what they want. From Charleston South Carolina to Canada, we have several options, spread out over eight months of the year.

Along with all of the cruises we offer in the New England area, we offer trips throughout the USA and the rest of the world. Visit the Wonders of Asia , the unfettered beauty of Alaska , the warm playas of Central America , and the history and culture of European destinations .

The American Cruise Lines offer the newest and most environmentally friendly small ships in the country. With its hospitable staff and large staterooms, you’ll be treated like royalty — which you are whenever you book a cruise with USA River Cruises!

And don’t forget: We’ve set up daily entertainment for you as performers, musicians, historians, naturalists, and others climb aboard to regale with you with entertainment and education! Interested in seeing America, North America, or the rest of the world? Contact USA River Cruises and we’ll show you the four corners of the world .

Immerse yourself in Boston’s historic sites and exciting culinary scene. Ride the vintage cable cars in San Francisco and explore the dazzling colors of Seattle’s Pike Place Market.

Cruises to the United States take you to the heart of these iconic cities, as well as exploring some of the country’s most beautiful coastlines, from the icy peaks and forested inlets of Alaska to the lush landscapes of New England. The list of adventures in store is endless, from hiking, cycling, and kayaking to whale-watching, designer shopping, fine dining, and a rich, diverse culture. All this is yours, from the luxurious setting of one of our award-winning, contemporary ships.

USA Cruise Highlights

Cosmopolitan cities.

The USA can rightly claim to have some of the most exciting cities in the world. San Diego’s atmospheric Gaslamp Quarter is waiting to be explored, while in Boston, the Freedom Trail is a fascinating history lesson. Check out Pier 39 in San Francisco, and take a trip to Alcatraz. Discover Hemingway’s legacy in laid-back Key West, find your inner rock star in Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture, or explore the interesting mix of cultures in New Orleans.

Spectacular Nature

Wherever you sail in the USA, you’ll be captivated by the extraordinary beauty of the landscapes. Hawaii is a lush paradise of rainforest, volcanic peaks, and tumbling waterfalls, while Alaska is wild and untamed, a world of snowy mountains, glaciers, and old-growth forest. Sail the coast of New England in fall and take in the dazzling shades of scarlet and orange on the trees. Or head south to Key West for a setting of coconut palms, sandy beaches, and colorful coral reefs.

Exciting Cuisine

Whether you want to taste award-winning vintages in Napa Valley, feast on lobster rolls in New England, or sample gumbo in New Orleans, you’ll discover an incredibly varied culinary scene on your travels around the USA. Don’t miss a salmon bake or the chance to try reindeer sausages in Alaska. In San Francisco, head for Chinatown for tasty dim sum. Key West is famed for its tangy Key lime pie, while Seattle’s claim to fame is artisan-roast coffee—and those powerful Washington State wines.

United States Cruise Regions

The wild frontier of Alaska has some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in the USA, where you’ll find mile upon mile of jagged, snow-capped mountains and dense forest. On a cruise, you’ll be able to appreciate this wild beauty from both a land and sea perspective. You’ll see glaciers, rocky shorelines, historic gold rush towns, and flower-strewn mountain meadows. Along the way, you can hike, kayak, spot bears, go whale-watching, and feast on fresh salmon.

New England

New England has it all: cosmopolitan cities like Boston, arty seaside towns, windswept coasts, and verdant national parks. Follow the Freedom Trail in Boston, and explore Portland’s seafaring history under Maine’s vast skies. Hike the woodlands and glacier-scoured peaks of glorious Acadia National Park. Time your trip for the fall and admire the fiery colors of the foliage. Everywhere you go, there’s delicious seafood to taste, like lobster rolls, or claws dripping in melted butter.

Visit some of the most exciting cities on the Pacific Coast with Celebrity. See the graceful sweep of the Golden Gate Bridge in hilly San Francisco, and ride the historic cable cars. Whizz up the Space Needle in Seattle and take in the colors and buzz of Pike Place Market. In Los Angeles, browse the designer shops on Rodeo Drive and marvel at the stars’ homes. Catalina Island, meanwhile, is another world of rugged coastlines, diverse marine life, and hiking trails with sweeping views.

Indulge in a relaxing journey across the warm Pacific from Vancouver to the lush, volcanic islands of Hawaii, where waterfalls tumble from verdant peaks and the ocean is home to abundant whales and dolphins. Visit Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls from Hilo, and admire the fiery antics of Mount Kilauea. Learn about history in Honolulu, the location of the only royal palace in the USA, and Pearl Harbor. Join a firelight luau in Lahaina, and visit a working pineapple plantation.

The Sunshine State is the perfect place to start your cruise. Admire the colorful Art Deco architecture of Miami’s South Beach, and taste Cuban cuisine in Little Havana. Browse the shops along Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, and explore the canals by gondola. Take a boat ride through the watery Everglades in search of alligators. Treat your kids to a day in the theme parks around Orlando—and meet astronauts at the Kennedy Space Center. Make time to visit those glorious beaches, too.

Enjoy the delights of the gentle way of life of Martha's Vineyard

Enjoy the delights of the gentle way of life of Martha's Vineyard

Less well-known than its neighbour Cape Cod , the island of Martha’s Vineyard – or simply the Vineyard – is one of the pearls of New England . A favourite holiday destination of American presidents, who've been attracted by its tranquil calmness and mild oceanic climate since the 1960s, the island is also home to picturesque architectural treasures, ranging from the white houses of Edgartown to the toothed roofs of the colourful residences of the former Methodist community of Oak Bluffs – a charming "gingerbread village" like something straight out of Hansel and Gretel .

Strolling and wandering the old town of New Orleans

Strolling and wandering the old town of New Orleans

Founded ex nihilo in 1718, New Orleans stands at the heart of the Louisiana bayou between the banks of the Mississippi and the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. Sometimes languid, sometimes frenetic, but always festive and full of life, The Big Easy , as it's also known, is one of the most fascinating cities in the United States. Both the cradle of jazz and blues and the birthplace of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, the city positively gleams with its cosmopolitan identity. From the French Quarter – the courtyards, fountains, gardens and wrought iron balconies of which bear witness to a rich colonial past – to the streets of the traditionally authentic and Bohemian neighbourhood of Faubourg Marigny, an enchanting melting pot of European, Native American, African, Creole and Cajun influences come together, granting New Orleans a wonderfully endearing soul.

Explore Everglades National Park in southern Miami

Explore Everglades National Park in southern Miami

Six thousand square kilometres of wet meadows and marshes populated with cypress, mangrove and pine: Everglades National Park , at the southern tip of Florida, makes up the largest natural subtropical habitat on the North American continent. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park extends like a long river of grass flowing out to the sea from inland. This is one of the richest – and most fragile – ecosystems in the world, providing an important refuge for several hundred species of birds, mammals, fish and reptiles. Included amongst these are 36 endangered species, such as the Florida panther , the American crocodile and the West Indian manatee .

Immerse yourself in the cultural and artistic melting pot of the streets of Miami

Immerse yourself in the cultural and artistic melting pot of the streets of Miami

Sitting at the crossroads of the Americas and the Caribbean , between the national parks of the Everglades and Biscayne, Miami stands out as the very symbol of a multicultural Florida. It goes without saying that Miami is, of course, the endless sands of Miami Beach , dotted with those iconic lifeguard towers and washed by the turquoise waters of the Atlantic. But Miami is also the warm, friendly atmosphere of Little Havana and the high-class luxury of Coconut Grove . There are the Art Deco wonders of the South Beach neighbourhood, with its pastel-coloured apartment blocks and whimsical architecture. And then there are the immense murals of the Wynwood Art District, a global Mecca for street art . Multifaceted, diverse and highly colourful, Miami stands out as one of the most creative cities of the US East Coast.

Useful tips

Americans are not in the habit of kissing as a form of saying hello or goodbye. Opt instead for a handshake, or if greeting friends, a hug and a gentle pat on the back.

Essential phrases

Although English is mostly spoken (with a strong accent), some Maori words and expressions slip into everyday phrases. Here are some.

Quirky facts and insights

Key West , lying 200 kilometres from the continental mainland at the extreme tip of the Florida Keys archipelago, is the most southern point of the United States (excluding Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean). The island is in fact closer to Cuba, and the inhabitants of Key West have no hesitation in marking themselves out as different from their American compatriots. In 1982, as an act of protest against a road blockade set up by the US authorities, they declared their independence by creating a micronation named the Conch Republic .

Food & gastronomy

In Florida, fish and seafood , particularly crabs and oysters, are especially popular. Alligator meat (farmed), a somewhat more unusual and exotic option, is also widely available. Cuban and Puerto Rican cuisine , imported by the region's sizeable communities of people with a background in these countries, also form part of the local culinary landscape. One particularly notable speciality is the Cuban sandwich: ham, grilled pork and melted cheese on soft white bread.

Myths and legends

Maori has a rich mythology. Of all the legends told, the creation story is one of the best-known. In the beginning there was Rangi-nui (the Sky), who joined together with Papa-tuanuku (the Earth). Their constant embrace plunged the world into darkness. Fed up with the lack of light, their children decided to separate them. Pushing with all his might, Tane-mahuta (the guardian of the forest and the birds) managed to part them. In doing so, he injured his mother. Blood poured onto the Earth for the first time, dyeing New Zealand's soil red. This is why all Maori sites are ochre. Sad to no longer be alongside his wife, the Sky began to cry and rain fell for the first time, filling up the oceans.

In the spotlight

Kiwi birds are so symbolic of New Zealand that New Zealanders are called "kiwis". These birds are one of the species on the island that are especially endangered. Being unable to fly, kiwi populations have decreased sharply in recent years. The government has launched a plan to increase their numbers from 70,000 to 100,000 by 2030. Measures include extending the protected areas where they live, managing predators better and furthering knowledge about the five kiwi species.

Books. Florida , by Jean Dytar, tells the story of a little-known episode in the history of colonisation. Written in the form of a graphic novel, it deals with the tragic fate of a group of French colonists, the Huguenots, who set out for Florida at the end of the 16th century with the aim of conquering the New World. Very few of them would survive the tropical climate and the famine they encountered. Amongst the few who did survive this expedition was the cartographer Jacques le Moynes, who opted to set up home in England with his wife and two children instead – a decision that enabled him to escape the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre but not the vague colonialist desires of the nations of Europe.

Music. Music is an integral part of the cultural landscape of Florida. The existing Afro-American heritage was added to in the 1960s by Latin music imported by Cubans and Haitians: salsa, bachata, merengue, zouk, calypso… Disco then enjoyed a wave of popularity in Miami in the 1970s, followed later by hip hop.

Film. In The Departed (2006), Martin Scorsese used the streets of the Charlestown and Chinatown neighbourhoods of Boston as the setting for a drama in which the police and the mob play a dangerous double game. Starring Leonardo Di Caprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg, this great film brought together a stellar cast.

Facts and figures

What Cruise Ports Are On The East Coast? 10 Diverse Choices!

By: Author Tyler Bowman

Posted on Last updated: October 14, 2023

Categories DESTINATIONS , LEARN

One of the best ways to make the most of your time and money when planning a cruise vacation is to choose a cruise port relatively close to home. That will minimize travel costs getting to your departure point. And, you can enhance your overall vacation by planning for some activities in your embarkation city. If you live along the east coast or it is easily accessible to you, you will have the most options for selecting a departure point. (Another advantage of the east-cost cruise ports is that they often host closed-loop cruises that don’t require a passport !)

In this post, we will review what cruise ports are on the east coast. Keep reading for details on your options, as well as some hotel and activity suggestions if you choose to arrive a day or two in advance of your cruise departure.

What Cruise Ports Are On The East Coast: Florida Holds The Record

Florida has the most cruise ports in the world, and we have written about them before. We have provided a detailed report on the five different ports you can find in Florida . So, to briefly recap:

Port of Miami – PortMiami is used both as a home port and a port of call for several cruise lines . The home port cruise lines include Azamara Club Cruises, Carnival, Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Viking Ocean Cruises, and Virgin Voyages. The port-of-call cruise lines are AIDA, Hapag-Lloid, Hurtigruten, P&O Cruises, Phoenix, Princess Cruises, SAGA, Scenic Luxury Cruises, Seabourn, TUI Cruises, and Windstar Cruises.

Our favorite hotel for family cruisers in Miami is: Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay .

Port of Ft. Lauderdale – The port of Ft. Lauderdale is named Port Everglades but hosts fewer cruise lines than Port Miami. The cruise lines from Port Everglades include Balearia Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Cunard, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection, Royal Caribbean International, Silversea Cruises, and Viking Ocean Cruises.

Our favorite family cruise hotel in Ft. Lauderdale is the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort .

Port of Jacksonville – The port of Jacksonville, JAXport, offers the services of only one cruise line , the Carnival Cruise Lines, though you can book through a couple of different agencies.

Our recommended hotel for family cruisers in Jacksonville is the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront.

Port of Tampa – Port Tampa Bay homeports a few different cruise lines throughout the year. The cruise lines at Port Tampa Bay include Carnival Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, and Norwegian Cruise Line. Our favorite hotel in Tampa for a pre-cruise stay is The Westin Tampa Waterside .

Port Canaveral – The last of Florida’s cruise ports, Port Canaveral, offers five different cruise lines . The cruise lines of Port Canaveral include Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises.

The Cruise Port In Baltimore, Maryland

This home port in Baltimore, Maryland, is called Cruise Maryland and functions as a home port for cruises to Bermuda , as well as those going to New England, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Canada. Though you may be more interested in getting on the ship, there is a lot to see and do in the area, so be sure to look around.

Baltimore offers you the chance to catch up on some art, history, and more if you want to visit one of the city’s three museums. In addition, if you want a close-up experience with your favorite sea critters, you can also visit the massive National Aquarium, which offers a 4D theater experience for those feeling adventurous.

The Cruise Maryland port is a home port for two different Cruise lines, Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean International, but it also functions as a port of call for other cruise lines. These cruise lines include AIDA cruises and MS Amadea.

If you are lucky enough to have Baltimore as a port of call, want to extend your vacation, or want to arrive in town a bit earlier, there are plenty of things to keep your children busy if you wish. One of these brilliant places includes the Maryland Science Center in Downtown Baltimore, where your children can have a look at the child-friendly displays and get a new science experience.

In addition, you and your children can enjoy some activities at one of the top-ranked children’s museums in America by going to the Port Discovery Children’s Museum in downtown Baltimore. If you have children looking for something more adrenaline-inducing or want them to get a good night’s rest after a day out, you can visit iFly in Baltimore for an indoor skydiving experience.

Our recommended hotel for a stay in Baltimore is the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel .

The Cruise Port In Bayonne, New Jersey

The cruise port in Bayonne, New Jersey, gets called the Cape Liberty Cruise Port and offers cruises between the Caribbean, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Canada, Greenland, New England, and the Americas, with three different cruise lines throughout the year.

The three cruise lines that use this port as a home port are Royal Caribbean International Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, and TUI Cruises. Other cruise lines also come past the port that may use it as a port of call.

In 2014 Cape Liberty Cruise Port hosted the biggest and one of the most luxurious cruise ships ever to use this port, called Quantum of the seas, a ship operated by the Royal Caribbean International Cruises line. Hosting the Quantum of the seas is a fantastic feat that shows the growth, development, and progress made on the port since its creation in the 1930s and its use during the second world war .

If you aren’t rushing to get on the ship, you can do some things in Bayonne, including taking your children to one of the city’s water parks or theme parks. If you feel up for taking to the skies, you can also go on an air tour of the city by booking a helicopter ride or one of the other tour activities.

The Cruise Port In Boston, Massachusetts

The Flynn CuirsePort , found in Boston, Massachusetts, boasts a 10-minute drive from Boston Logan International Airport, allowing you to get to the cruise port quickly if needed. This port offers cruises between Boston and Bermuda, Canada, New England, and The Caribbean and is a port of call for many other cruise ships.

If you are looking to board a cruise ship from this port, there are plenty of options for the cruise line you want to use.

These include American Queen Voyages, Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Cunard Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceana Cruises, P&O Cruises, Ponant, Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Royal Caribbean International Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises, The TUI Group, Vantage Cruise Lines, Viking Ocean Cruises, and Windstar Cruise Lines.

What Cruise Ports Are On The East Coast

The Flynn Cruiseport is such a popular cruise port that in September of 2022 alone, their 11 Homeport Vessels had over 37 000 passengers. Though that is a significant number, in the same month of 2022, they received over 47 000 passengers as a port of call port, from 26 different cruise ships for the month.

One of the recommended things to do in Boston, whether you’re waiting for your ship or using it as a port of call, is to go to the Aquarium, where you can be closer to the sea critters. If you’re interested in it, you can also visit the LegoLand Discovery Center in Boston with your children, be sure not to step on any tiny Legos if you need to return to the cruise ship on time.

For a stay in Boston before or after a cruise, we recommend The Lenox Hotel ; or alternatively, the Seaport Hotel .

What Cruise Ports Are On The East Coast In New York City, New York

The cruise port in New York City called NYCruise has two main Terminals, one in Brooklyn and another in Manhattan. This port was awarded the title of “ Best US Homeport” by TravelAge West Magazine and offers trips to Canada/New England, Bermuda, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas through ten possible cruise lines, depending on the one you choose and the terminal.

The cruise lines that use this as a home port include Crystal Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruises, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, the Cunard Line, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Seabourn Cruises, Holland America Line, and Vantage Travel. Other cruise lines also use this port as a port of call, like many other ports on the east coast.

With New York City undoubtedly being one of the US’s most popular tourist attractions, it is easy to understand why NYCruise had to develop a way to make boarding and disembarking more efficient, something they won an award for in 2011 at the Manhattan terminal.

Whether you’re just visiting this port as a part of the cruise or want to use it as a home port, there are plenty of things to do and see in the area, ensuring you can keep yourself and your children busy. One of the most popular places to see in New York City is the Statue of Liberty, so if you are in the area, it is best if you don’t skip on having a close-up.

The Cruise Port In Charleston, South Carolina

The Port of Charleston offers many cruises as a home port and port of call. The following cruise lines come through this port Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, TUI Cruises, American Queen Voyages, and Princess Cruises.

With Charleston being named 2021’s Top US City by Travel and Leisure magazine, it is easy to understand why so many cruise lines choose to start or make a stop at this port. This port is a part of a city known for its history and natural beauty, giving you plenty of opportunities to explore if your cruise ship docs at this port.

If you are looking to pass the time with your kids, some of the activities you may want to look into include exploring the Charleston Historic District and the Fire Museum.

For a hotel stay in Charleston, we recommend either the French Quarter Inn ; or alternatively the Courtyard by Marriott Charleston Waterfront (note that there are 2 different Courtyard properties in Charleston).
