Tour guides/leaders were incredible...very knowledgeable of the area and history and culture and food! The final stay in Budapest at the Star City Hotel was disappointing...staff were stressed, aloof, and not customer service oriented ( in a positive way) Be nice to choose a true 4 star hotel for the last night of the trip

Cycling in the Balkans ( 4 Countries Albania-North Macedonia-Kosovo-Montenegro) Tour

Cycling in the Balkans ( 4 Countries Albania-North Macedonia-Kosovo-Montenegro)

Stunning scenery, great cycling (highlights were the descents to Pluzine and Kotor), good food, chance to go swimming in some lovely lakes, some organisational problems which may have been due to the big group size (21) but did detract from the experience in some areas: the route differed on occasion from the one advertised in the itinerary; we had to move hotels on the rest day in Kotor which was a bit disruptive, and this wasn't communicated until quite late; on many days we were split across multiple different accommodations (including in some cases what seemed like Airbnbs) due to lack of hotel options. A lot of the hotel options were actually pretty good (the best one being in Peje), but the two nights in guesthouses were more basic and people were sharing bathrooms or even a room with someone else despite paying for the single supplement; that would maybe have been acceptable had it been flagged in the itinerary, or at least people could book or not based on having that information beforehand. All of this makes it sound like a poor experience but it really wasn't, I had a great time and can definitely recommend cycling in this part of the world

Excellent tour. Well organised. Erlis and tani were great guides nothing was too much trouble. The maps every day were v useful and the bikes were of high quality we enjoyed the varied food and accommodation. Having panniers was helpful

Cycle the Baltics Tour

Cycle the Baltics

This trip was all about the biking, and without an excellent guide, the trip could have tanked easily. Instead, we had the great fortune to have Minda at the lead. He was kind, intouch with the group, enthusiastic, supportive and fun. He was so knowledgeable about every place we went and each tidbit he imparted came right from his soul. As a result, the entire group was calm, relaxed and up for the adventure. I can not say enough about Minda Now, the trip itself is challenging, beautiful, and exceeded my expectations.

Fantastic trip. Hotels were tremendous, especially the meal in the hotel in Saint Florent-le-Vieil. Maps were good though I used my app Bikemap.net, to act as a Sat Nav. A couple of hiccups with luggaeew but minor in comparison with holiday organisation. Would certainly recommend.

Cycling tours & trips in europe reviews.

Sasa Tour Guide and Andro the driver were great. They took care of the group with their jovial attitude and ensured that individual's needs were met. They provided easy to follow directions and kept the group together. There were occasions when things would have gone wrong but Sasa and Andro ensured that they are there on every step along the way to make it trouble-free and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend intrepid tours and would consider future tours through Intrepid.
Although the "biking" was not on my bucket list (was talked into the trip by our brother/sister-in-law), but we had a very great time! Mindaugas was a great guide, and our driver was also great. The hotels were fine, the food was excellent, and the biking was better than I'd expected! Our fellow companions were delightful. The history and tours of the Baltic countries was wonderful. It would have been nice to have had a microphone hook-up during our guided walking tours in order to hear all the information. It would have been nice to be able to buy t-shirts (Mindaugas wore a few) that displayed a map of the tour. I think it would have been nice if we could have ordered them before or after the trip. Is it possible to do so now? Otherwise, I'd never done anything like this before, and may do it again at some point.

Nestled along the shimmering Adriatic Sea lies a hidden gem that captures the hearts of all who coast along its shores—Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula. From picturesque seaside villages to rugged cliffs adorned with olive groves and ancient Roman ruins, this region embodies the essence of Mediterranean beauty. Did you know? As a result, the region’s cultural heritage bears the fruits of all three of these cultures. But what truly makes Istria special? The people. With their warm hospitality and rich cultural heritage, the locals of Istria welcome you, inviting you to partake in age-old traditions and savor the flavors of their land. Stroll through the cobblestone streets of Rovinj, savor freshly caught seafood in Pula, or indulge in world-class truffles from the region’s forests, each encounter with the people of Istria leaves an indelible mark on your soul. Discover this gem on our “Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula” tour! Join us with shoulder season dates including May 25, September 7 or 28. #CycleAndSavor #CulturalCycling #GourmetPedals #TourDeFlavor #BikeAndBiteAdventures #CulinaryCycles #TasteOnTwoWheels #RollAndRelish #CyclingCuisine #EpicureanEscapes #GlobetrotterCycles #TrekAndTaste #CulinaryJourneys #PedalToPlate #CulturalCyclist #TastingTrails #WanderWheelers #AdriaticMagic #Istria #Croatia

🍦🇮🇹 The great gelato debate continues: where in Italy have you tasted the MOST heavenly gelato? One of our favorite stops in Southern Italy is Arte Fredda in Alberobello. At Arte Fredda, only the freshest ingredients are used, such as the renowned Bronte pistachios from Sicily, or the almonds from the groves along quiet country roads. But it’s not just the ingredients that make this a top gelateria, imagine fruits filled with gelato, cakes painted by hand, and wine sorbets. This isn’t just gelato, it’s a culinary creation. With flavors as exotic as mango, prickly pear and mulberry, there is bound to be a flavor that pleases everyone. What a fantastic start to the week! Thank you to first-time Alumna, Suzie M. for sharing her incredible feedback about our Bike Across Southern Italy tour! "It was the absolute best trip I’ve ever been on. The riding was challenging, beautiful, and quiet. The hotels were centrally located, unique, and luxurious. The cultural tours were perfectly arranged after our ride, before dinner, and private. Meals and wine pairings were not only delicious, but educational. The guides were so much fun. Warm, friendly, supportive, and super attentive. By the end of the 11 night journey, I felt that I had made new friends/family. It was a superb trip! This weekend, let a sip of limoncello transport you to the sun-soaked south of Italy. Italians relish this bright, sweet, and tart liqueur as an aperitif or after-dinner treat. Of course, we think this is also the ideal post-biking refreshment – just add some Prosecco, club soda, and citrus slices for a delightful Limoncello Spritz! The origins of limoncello might be debated, but we have the inside scoop on the ideal spots to savor it during our Taste of Amalfi Bike Tour! Cycling in Europe is a little like riding through a cliché. Pedaling your way past Provencal orange groves, cellar-door wine tastings on the Dalmatian coast, tracing the gentle curve of the Danube or climbing switchbacks in the hills of the English Peak District – it’s easy to feel like you’ve cycled onto some faded postcard from the 50s. What’s next? Croissants? Singing bluebirds? That’s the beauty of a Europe cycling tour: just when you think it can’t get any more ridiculous, we up the Wow Factor by another 15%. Want to ride through Tuscany’s Borgo a Mozzano valley? Cycle to the wonders of Little Petra and its bigger sibling? Stuff your face with Croatian olives or French cheesecake? (The calories don’t count if you’re cycling.) We’ve got a tour to suit every daydream. The hard bit is picking your favorite.

Our Europe cycling Top 5

Cycle tour group in Arles, France

Provence, France

Ah, Provence... a place that’s always followed with a little wistful sigh. You’ll understand why when you ride through it. There are the quiet country lanes outside Avignon, the vineyards and cellar doors of Chateauneuf du Pape, old Roman architecture like the Pont de Gard aqueduct, and even optional climbs like the epic Mont Ventoux (prepare your quads, people). But really, this cycling tour isn’t so much about Yellow Jerseys or competitive racing. It flows to a more rural rhythm, a classic Provencal tempo: wandering the cobbled lanes of Orange, a spot of market shopping at Tarascon (try the local-grown sheep milk cheese) or strolling through the famous gardens of St Remy. Ah…Provence.

cycle through the scenice coastal town of Hvar, Croatia

Hvar, Croatia

Take a pin and stick it in a map of Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, and the chances are pretty good you’ll hit paradise. Of course, the Istrian Peninsula is quickly gaining a name for itself as a cycling hot spot, but we prefer the celeb-dotted island of Hvar. We’ll load the bikes on the ferry from nearby Bol, dodge a few super yachts on the crossing, and then touch down in beautiful Jelsa. Hvar is what good screensavers are made of, and its inland lavender fields make a pretty spectacular backdrop for an afternoon’s cycling tour. Pedal your way to old Hvar Town, and watch the sun set over a glass of locally-grown Chardonnay and seafood pinched fresh from the Adriatic. Pure cycling bliss.

Cycle the streets of Hedervar in Hungary

The Danube River

The mighty Danube River offers up incredible, picturesque highlights every 10km or so. A ride along its banks is classic central Europe: sleepy villages, lowland forests, the UNESCO-listed terraces of the Wachau vineyards and even a sandy beach or two. After a few days in the saddle, what could be better than relaxing in one of the charming riverside towns? Get your group together and go for a wander in search of some hearty post-cycling fuel: goulash and Langos (deep-fried flatbread) should do the trick!

Two cyclists on the dirt track of Wadi Araba

Wadi Araba, Jordan

The breathtaking desert landscapes of Jordan are something you've got to see to believe. Until you're dropping 1200 metres on winding country roads through Wadi Araba into the lush greenery of the Jordan Valley... and then you might not even believe it yourself. Enjoy stunning views of mountains and acacia trees, ride alongside a travelling camel or two, and be left in awe of scenery that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Cycle group in Lucca, Italy

Lucca, Italy

Our Tuscan cycling tour features some pretty spectacular stretches of road, but sometimes it’s the days off the bike that really stick in the memory. And trust us, you’ll remember the little Renaissance town of Lucca for a long, long time. It’s less busy than its nearby neighbour Pisa, and what it lacks in leaning towers, it more than makes up for in shady promenades, cobbled lanes and photogenic piazzas just waiting to be explored on foot. Our tip? Stretch those sore quads with a little stroll through the Roman amphitheatre off the Via Fillungo before heading to the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro to stuff your face with fresh pizza and razor-sharp espresso. The next day, we’ll hop back on the bikes for a ride along the Serchio River to Pisa. Just another day on an Intrepid cycling tour.

16 of the best European cycling routes

Finding the best cycling routes in Europe can be tricky. There are so many to choose from that it can be quite overwhelming.

That’s why we’ve put together a list of what are, in our opinion, the best long distance cycling routes Europe has to offer.

We hope it will help you narrow down where you might want to travel next on your bike if you want to cycle across Europe. All the routes we’ve selected are:

  • in Europe, excluding the UK
  • long-distance, which means they will take multiple days to ride
  • possible on a road or gravel bike (you may prefer a gravel bike for comfort/flexibility and the option to fit panniers)

So read on and decide where your bike will take you next.

Read these article for info on preparing for long rides and training for long rides.

France cycling routes

London to paris cycle route.

  • Distance: London, England and Paris, France
  • Start/finish: 470 kilometres
  • Surface: Road and greenways

The London to Paris bike ride is an iconic ride – one of the true epic bike rides of Europe. There are many different ways to ride this route, but one of the best-known is the Avenue Verte. Beginning in London, it takes in the sights as you head south towards the coast, where a ferry shuttles you across the Channel. From there, you ride through quiet towns into the bustling capital of France, Paris.

Although you can use a road bike on this route, we’d recommend fitting some wide tyres to deal with the greenways, as you may encounter some gravel.  You can also do this route in reverse, for the Paris to London bike ride. While not the longest, it’s still one of the best cycle touring routes Europe can offer.

Veloscenic cycle route

  • Distance: 450 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Paris, France and Mont St-Michel, France

The Veloscenic cycle route is one of the best cycling routes in France, with its easy riding and long stretches of greenways.

It’s perfect for those looking to see the sights often missed on other French cycling routes, including the Eiffel Tower and the Bay of the Mont St-Michel.

The route is ideal for laid-back family cycling holidays in Europe.  It’s well signposted and has plenty of accommodation along the route called Accueil Vélo. In English, this means ‘cyclists welcome’. If you’re keen on finding good cycling routes in France for all abilities, then the Veloscenic route is certainly one to read up on. If you want the best flat cycle routes in Europe, this is one to consider – it’s not completely flat, but it’s very gentle.

Route des Grandes Alpes

  • Distance: 710 kilometers
  • Start/finish: Geneva, Switzerland to Nice, France
  • Surface: Road

The Route des Grandes Alpes is a really tough route and certainly earns its position on our list of the best cycle routes in Europe.

Beginning in Geneva, before heading south to Nice, riders take in the panoramic views of some of the most famous cycling routes (and climbs) in the world.

Over 18 mountain passes and a leg-straining 17,000 metres of climbing, this is not a route for the faint-hearted.

There are tour companies who specialise in taking the hassle out of these trips so you can focus on riding the best long distance bicycle routes and soaking in the glorious alpine views.

It’s a brilliant chance to tick off some of those bucket list cols you might not otherwise get the chance to ride, and really put your climbing legs to the test. But don’t forget to bring some extra gearing! You can’t tackle the best bicycle routes in Europe without being properly prepared, after all.

Trans Pyrenees

  • Distance: 1,100 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Llançà, Spain and San Sebastian, Spain

The Trans Pyrenees is one of the most well-known and best cycling routes Europe has to offer. If you want epic bike rides in Europe, look no further!

Most people create a route from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean coast and ride it as a supported or self-supported ride. The statistics above are based on the route described in our article on the Trans Pyrenees ( here ).

Lost Dot, the same company that runs the Transcontinental race, also runs an event in the region. Riders are given checkpoints and parcours to ride rather than a set route. This gives riders the freedom to test their navigation and route plotting skills on top of the already massive challenge in front of them.

These great long distance cycling routes in Europe are fantastic challenges for hardcore cyclists who want to experience bikepacking and being self-sufficient on the bike across some of the prettiest (and most challenging) landscapes on the continent.

Find out more about the Trans Pyrenees  here .

Belgium and Netherlands cycling routes

Flanders cycle loop, belgium.

  • Distance: 952 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Nieuwpoort, Belgium (circular)

Belgium is steeped in cycling history and provides some of the best cycling Europe has to offer. The country is home to professional heroes such as Eddy Merckx and Lotte Kopecky, and also some of the toughest cobbled climbs and harshest terrain there is.

The Flanders cycle loop takes in a long loop of Belgium, exploring each corner of Flanders. It’s 952 kilometres long and has 5,155 metres of climbing on offer. The key thing about this route is enjoying your surroundings.

Belgium offers some of the best bike rides in Europe, and this route demonstrates why – taking in some of the picturesque towns and cities and undulating routes around the Flanders region. The country is also great for flatter Europe bike routes, but this route shows there are still plenty of climbing challenges available, too.

Our article on planning a cycling holiday in Belgium and our guide to cycling Flanders should be useful.

Zuider Zee route, Netherlands

  • Distance: 440 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Enkhuizen, Netherlands (circular)
  • Surface: Road and cycle paths

One of the most popular Europe cycling routes is the Zuiderzee (otherwise known as the Ijsselmeer Tour) in the Netherlands. It traverses around the Ijsselmeer lake, which was created after the closing of the south sea (Zuiderzee) by a dam. The dam is part of the route and is 37 kilometres long!

The Netherlands is well known for its bike-friendly culture. The Zuiderzee route combines their official cycle routes, LF21, LF22 and LF23 to create one of the best long-distance cycle routes Europe has to offer. It is quite flat and is great for beginners if you don’t want to ride the full route.

Spain and Portugal cycling routes

Camino de santiago cycle route, spain.

  • Distance: 930 kilometres (based on the most popular route, known as the ‘French Way’)
  • Start/finish: Orreaga-Roncesvalles, Spain and Santiago de Compostela
  • Surface: Road and gravel

Cycling the Camino de Santiago, or the Way of Saint James as it’s also known, is a less traditional way of approaching this pilgrimage. Typically, hikers adorn the trails, but we think cycling is a much more time-efficient and enjoyable way to do it.

There are five main Camino de Santiago cycling routes to choose from, all varying in starting place and thus length. But, whichever one you choose, you’ll be riding one of the most historic cycle routes Europe has to offer.

To get your Compostela, or your accreditation to certify you have completed the Camino de Santiago by bike, you need to ride at least 200km of this long distance cycle route.

Given that the terrain is split between gravel and road, the best bike for the Camino de Santiago is either a wide tyre gravel/touring bike or a lightweight mountain bike. With proper preparation and choosing the right time of year, this is easily one of the best cycle trips in Europe.

N2 road, Portugal

  • Distance: 739 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Chaves, Portugal and Faro, Portugal

The N2 road in Portugal isn’t just one of the most well known known Portugal cycling routes, it’s also becoming one of the best European cycle routes full stop.

Beginning in Chaves in the North, riders travel 739-kilometres south over undulating terrain and through stunning scenery to reach Faro.

While many people immediately look further east when planning their Europe bicycle routes, don’t overlook Portugal, which is home to some of the best bike trails in Europe overall.

If you’d like to know more about these bike tour routes, read our new article about the N2 road here and discover one of the best European cycling routes. Our guide on cycling the Algarve might also be useful.

Italy and Slovenia cycling routes

Via francigena cycle route, italy.

  • Distance: 1,030 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Great Saint Bernardo Pass, Switzerland and Roma, Italy
  • Surface: Road and unpaved

The Via Francigena bike route is steeped in history and is one of the best known long distance cycling routes in Italy.

It begins on the Swiss-Italian border and travels south towards Rome, taking in both asphalt and off-road terrain. Following the route is relatively simple, with the places to cycle carefully mapped throughout Italy with blue and white signs.

There are a few ways to tackle this route, including one of the EuroVelo routes. It’s recognised under the EuroVelo route 5 banner and begins in Canterbury, England, before heading across Europe to Rome. It is based on a historic 3,000-kilometre journey taken by Sigeric the Serious to meet the Pope in 990AD and has resulted in one of the best long distance cycle routes Europe offers.

Tour of Slovenia’s Julian Alps

  • Distance: 324 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Neblo, Slovenia and Bohinjska Bistrica

The Julian Alps are some of Slovenia’s best-kept secrets. On this loop, you’ll ride 324 kilometres of challenging terrain and beautiful scenery.

The Tour of the Julian Alps is one of many Slovenia cycling routes that provide jaw-dropping views. It may not be the longest distance, but the rewarding landscapes make it one of the best bike routes Europe has tucked away – a true hidden gem.

Multi-country European cycling routes

EuroVelo cycling routes are an indispensable resource for finding biking routes in Europe; they have worked over many years to create a dense network of routes for cycling across Europe.

One of the great things about the EuroVelo cycling routes is that they are well signposted and easily followed to help ensure you have a successful trip cycling through Europe.

Atlantic-Black Sea cycle route

  • Distance: 4,450 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Nantes, France and Constanța, Romania

The Atlantic-Black Sea cycle route, EuroVelo 6, is among the most scenic cycling routes Europe has.

It travels from western France all the way across Europe to the city of Constanța in Romania . It takes in beautiful countryside like the Loire Valley in France and historic cities like Vienna and Budapest, making it one of the most popular EuroVelo routes there is.

It’s not for the faint-hearted as it’s 4,450 kilometres in length, but the reward is knowing you’ve cycled one of the best cycle routes Europe has to offer – and a contender for best EuroVelo route too.

Rhine cycle route

  • Distance: 1,500 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Andermatt, Switzerland and Rotterdam, Netherlands

The Rhine cycle route is part of EuroVelo route 15.

Beginning in Andermatt, Switzerland, riders get to see the Rhine from ‘source to sea’ firsthand.

From Lake Toma in Switzerland, the route takes you north, along the Rhine River, through France, past Lake Constance in Germany and all the way to the Rhine Delta at the North Sea in the Netherlands.

While it’s not quite as popular a bike route as some of the others listed here, cycling the Rhine is special as you get to travel with the water. It’s suitable for road bikes and covers a distance of 1,500 kilometres. All the while, riders take in plenty of culture and picturesque surroundings.  As with other EuroVelo road biking routes, it’s well signposted and easy to follow.

Danube cycle path

  • Distance: 1,200 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Donaueschingen, Germany and Budapest, Hungary
  • Surface: Road and cycle path

The Danube cycle path is a very popular route, with scenic riverside views and leisurely towpath riding.

Beginning in Donaueschingen, riders follow the Danube river, passing through Germany and Austria before eventually reaching the capital of Hungary, Budapest.

If you’re into your adventure cycling routes, it’s good to know that this cycle path is well-maintained and allows riders to create their own itineraries by visiting towns and places just off the route. Places where riders can stop and rent pergolas, for example, are just part of the charm.

The river continues all the way to Romania, where it becomes part of the Black Sea, but the paths past the Budapest point are not as well developed for cycling. Up to that point though, it’s one of the best bike rides Europe offers alongside one of its longest rivers.

Moselle cycle route

  • Distance: 512 kilometres
  • Start/finish: Bussang, France and Koblenz, Germany
  • Surface: Off-road but mainly well-paved cycle tracks

One of many bicycle routes in Europe that follows a river is the Moselle cycle route. It’s 512 kilometres in length and begins in the Vosges mountains in France before heading north through Germany.

The route is entirely on cycle paths which are, for the most part, well-paved. This means a hybrid or road bike with wide tyres will be more than sufficient for this trip.

The infrastructure improves significantly once you reach Metz, the industrial capital of northeastern France. There is plenty to see and do along this route, and it’s quite easy going so you won’t be too tired to head out sightseeing after your ride.

Baltic Sea Cycle/Iron Curtain Trail

  • Distance: 9,214 kilometres (Baltic Sea Route) and 10,000 kilometres (Iron Curtain Trail)
  • Start/finish: Turku, Finland and Kirkenes, Norway (Baltic Sea Route)/Rezovo, Bulgaria (Iron Curtain Trail)
  • Surface: Cycle path and road

The Baltic Sea Cycle and Iron Curtain Trails are part of the renowned EuroVelo cycling routes, which incorporate some of the best long distance bike rides across Europe. The EuroVelo routes connect Europe by bike through a network of long distance routes and are perfect for testing the legs over multiple days.

The Baltic Sea Cycle route is referenced as EuroVelo 10, and the Iron Curtain Trail is known as EuroVelo 13. The southern section of the Baltic Sea Cycle follows the same waypoints as the Iron Curtain Trail. They both travel through Estonia, Latvia and more, following the coast of the Baltic Sea, until the routes reach Germany. From there, the Iron Curtain Trail heads south, and the Baltic Sea Cycle heads north to continue following the Baltic Sea shoreline.

Partially drawn up to remember the history of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War, the European Union has supported the growth and development of these bike tour routes not only to raise awareness but to support less popular regions with tourists.

Both the Baltic Sea Cycle and the Iron Curtain Trail can be ridden either as single long distance cycle rides or as smaller chunks to cater to more abilities and time frames. They’re ideal for those who enjoy a variety of landscapes and cultural exploration on their bicycles.

Hi Georges, thanks for this, I have just sent you an email. Best wishes, Clare

Hello! My husband and I live in Alaska and would like to do a cycling trip in Europe. We have spent a few weeks in Switzerland years ago and loved it. We are also interested in Italy – Dolomites and Tuscany rolling hills/wine country. We are currently experiencing research and decision fatigue and not sure if we should have a base hotel/bnb and shuttle to the different areas or pay the large amount for an organized tour. We aren’t sure which tour companies are reputable. We would probably prefer a self guided, with some support, type of trip. That would give us flexibility. We were looking into this October but then realized that some tours are already sold out. We do not do well in heat so Sept. would probably not work for us. Thank you so much for any direction you can give us! K

Hi there, have just dropped you an email! (Do check your spam folder if it hasn’t arrived in your inbox already…)

Just wanted to recommend the N2 route in Portugal, which 11 of us self supported riders completed 7 days ago. Chapeau for featuring the N2 here 👏

Thanks Adrian! So glad to hear you had a great time!

What a calender for 2024.

Does anyone know where to find a comprehensive list of where fans can watch each race? What races are on Flo bikes, or NBC, or whatever.

How to Watch All the Biggest Pro Cycling Races of 2024

Here’s a look at the pro road races we can’t wait to watch in 2024—plus where to stream all the action.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 21

Milan-San Remo—March 16

Tour of flanders—march 31, paris-roubaix—april 6 and 7, itzulia basque country—april 1 to 6, la vuelta femenina—april 29 to may 5, giro d’italia—may 4 to 26, giro d’italia donne—july 7 to 14, tour de france—june 29 to july 21, olympic road races—august 3 and 4, tour de france femmes—august 12 to 18, vuelta a españa—august 17 to september 8, world road race championships—september 28 and 29.

Believe it or not, the 2024 pro road season is already underway, with the women’s and men’s Tour Down Under kicking things off in Australia this month. As the first races on the men’s and women’s WorldTour calendars, these are important events–and the riders taking part are certainly doing their best to get the season off to an exciting start.

Here are thirteen that we’ve already got marked in our calendars–and what streaming services you’ll need to enjoy them from home.

eroica 17th strade bianche 2023 men's elite

Strade Bianche—March 2

Taking place on the white gravel roads of Tuscany, Strade Bianche is easily one of the hardest and most beautiful events of the year–and a race in which the strongest rider always wins. So it makes sense that the event’s list of winners reads like a “Who’s Who” of the sport’s best racers.

For example, Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) won the men’s race in 2022 with a solo attack 50 kilometers from the finish line in Siena, an incredibly gutsy move that only a rider like Pogačar could attempt (and pull off).

Last year, Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers) added his name to the event’s impressive roll of honor with a daring ride of his own after catching the breakaway with about 40km to go, attacking on his own with about 20km to go, and then using his cyclocross and mountain bike skills (gravel descents can be treacherous) to stay away and win the race by himself. And while Pidcock won’t be back to defend his title this year, Pogačar will be taking the start (it’s his first race of the season), making the Slovenian the top favorite.

The women’s race always produces fireworks of its own. Last year, Kopecky (who won the race in 2022) and her teammate, the Netherlands’ Demi Vollering, hit the finish line (in Siena’s historic Piazza del Campo) together after working to catch and overtake the lone leader, American Kristen Faulkner (Team Jayco-AlUla).

But instead of crossing the line hand-in-hand, Vollering out-sprinted Kopecky with a well-timed bike throw to take the win. This was an uncomfortable outcome (at first), as it was unclear as to whether or not the riders were “supposed” to be sprinting against one another with such intensity. (Frankly, we loved it.)

This year, Kopecky and Vollering will look to make it four in a row for SD Worx (the Netherlands’ Chantal van den Broek-Blaak won the race for the team in 2021). We’ll be rooting for Poland’s Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM Racing), a four-time podium finisher who’s still searching for the top step.

While they haven’t released their calendar yet, we’re assuming (and hoping) that this race–and other major Italian events–will be included with the new B/R Sports add-on package that’s available to Max subscribers (essentially replacing GCN+). So stay tuned–we’ll announce more details when we have them.

topshot cycling ita milan sanremo

At almost 300km, Milan-San Remo is the longest one-day race on the calendar. And thanks to the fact that the outcome is almost always decided in the final 10km, the riders say it’s the easiest of cycling’s five Monuments to finish, but the hardest to win.

We love Milan-San Remo’s slow build to the finish as the riders head south from Milan toward the coast, then wind their way along the sea toward the cluster of climbs that host the Monument’s traditional finale. The day’s final and most famous ascent is the Poggio, a short, punchy ascent just a few kilometers from the finish line with a descent that often creates more gaps than the climb itself.

Case in point: Last year Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) attacked over the top of the climb and used the descent to lengthen his lead over an elite group of chasers. The Dutchman held on to take his first win in the season’s opening Monument.

And while there’s no women’s Milan-San Remo, the Trofeo Alfredo Binda, a major stop on the women’s WorldTour and a pillar of the former women’s World Cup series, takes place the next day–and (we assume) will be streamed live via Max.

Last year, the Netherland’s Shirin van Anrooij (Trek-Segafredo) brought Trek’s winning streak to three, escaping to win the race alone, 23 seconds ahead of her teammate–and the defending champion–Elisa Balsamo. One of the brightest young riders in the sport, the win announced van Anrooij as a future Classics superstar. And the 21-year-old promptly lived up to the hype, scoring top-10 finishes in Dwars door Vlaanderen, the Tour of Flanders, the Brabantse Pijl, and the Amstel Gold Race.

20th ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2023 women's elite

Many riders consider the Tour of Flanders (known locally as the “Ronde van Vlaanderen”) to be the hardest one-day race on the calendar. The women’s and men’s events cover over 150km and 250km of the toughest terrain in the Flemish region of Belgium including tight, technical roads, cobblestones, and short, steep climbs called “bergs.” The course is so challenging that it can take years for riders to master the nuances of the race enough to contend to win it.

Last year’s men’s race went to Pogačar, who won the race alone after dropping everyone on the third and final ascent of the Oude Kwaremont. Van der Poel finished second, and has now finished first or second in each of the last four editions.

Pogačar won’t be back to defend his title this year, which means van der Poel has a shot to tie the record for the most wins in race history. But we’ll be rooting for Belgium’s Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike), who’s completely overhauled his early-season program (he’s racing less and spending more time at high-altitude training camps) so as to be at his absolute best for his nation’s most important event.

The women’s event should once again be SD Worx’s race to lose: the Dutch team has won three of the last four editions, with Kopecky taking back-to-back victories in 2022 and 2023. It’s always a team effort though: last year Vollering joined Kopecky on the podium in second and in 2022 van den Broek-Blaak took third. Lidl-Trek, with van Anroij and Italy’s Eliza Longo Borghini (who finished third last year and won the race on 2015), should be the Dutch squad’s biggest challengers.

When it comes to streaming this and many of the Flemish Classics, you’ll need a $150 annual subscription to FloBikes, the only legal way to stream them in the USA. If you’re a diehard fan who doesn’t want to deal with pesky VPNs, it’s the most reliable method, but it comes at a significant cost and doesn’t offer much in terms of other events that can’t be streamed through other services.

cycling france 2023 paris roubaix women

The “Hell of the North.” The “Queen of the Classics.” Whatever you call it, the men’s and women’s editions of Paris-Roubaix are probably our favorite one-day races on the calendar. Famous for covering 30km and 55km of some of Northern France’s worst cobbled farm roads, they’re loaded with drama and always produce worthy champions.

The weekend begins with Saturday’s fourth edition of Paris-Roubaix Femmes (145km), which–if it sticks to last year’s course–should start in Denain and include the final 17 or so sectors of cobbles (called “pavé”) from Sunday’s men’s race—all the way to the finish line in the Roubaix velodrome, where Canada’s Alison Jackson (EF Education-Cannondale) shocked the world by outsprinting her breakaway companions to take a surprise win in last year’s edition. Surprisingly, this is the only spring Classic that SD Worx hasn’t won yet, so they’ll be super-aggressive after missing out in the first three editions.

In last year’s men’s race, van der Poel followed up his win in Milan-Sanremo and his second-place finish in the Tour of Flanders with a victory in Paris-Roubaix, a race seemingly made for the 5-time world cyclocross champion. The Dutchman followed an attack by van Aert on one of the race’s final cobbled sectors (a famous stretch called the Carrefour de l’Arbe) and then surged ahead on his own after the Belgian flatted.

Expect the two of them to renew their rivalry this year, with van Aert doing everything he can to end his spring with a victory in the French Monument (especially if he comes up short at Flanders the week before).

2nd itzulia basque country stage 6

Once known as the Tour of the Basque Country, the 6-day Itzulia Basque Country is one of the hardest stage races on the calendar. Raced through the steep, punchy hills in the Basque region of northern Spain, each road stage (one stage is usually an individual time trial) is raced like a mini-Classic. And the overall winner is usually a grand tour contender who’s using the event to build form for the Giro d’Italia or the Tour de France.

The racing here is always exciting, but this year’s edition offers an even better reason to watch: it is expected to be the first race of the season in which former Jumbo-Visma teammates Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Primož Roglič (who’s now riding for BORA-hansgrohe after a respectful divorce from the Dutch super team) will go head-to-head against one another as rivals.

Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick-Step) is likely to be racing as well, meaning three of the four contenders for this year’s Tour de France will be in action together–the only time that’s expected to happen before the Tour de France itself.

9th la vuelta femenina 2023 stage 7

For the past 8 years, the organizers of the men’s Vuelta a España have organized a women’s event. Originally starting as a one-day race run alongside the last stage of the men’s grand tour, the event grew to consist of four days of racing. But that’s hardly a grand tour, isn’t it?

Enter last year’s new and improved La Vuelta Feminina which in addition to being expanded to seven stages, moved from September to its own spot on the calendar–away from the men’s event that often overshadowed it.

Annemiek Van Vleuten (Movistar) won last year’s new and improved edition, but somewhat controversially. On Stage 6, the Dutch star and her team attacked the front of the race just as Vollering, who had entered the day as the overall leader, stopped to take a “nature break” off the back of the peloton. Thanks to strong crosswinds that split the race apart, Vollering and her SD Worx teammates were unable to bring back Van Vleuten, so Vollering’s chances to win the race went up the road as well.

This year’s course has yet to be unveiled, but one thing is certain: Van Vleuten–who became the first woman in history to win all three of the sport’s grand tours–has since retired, making Vollering the top favorite to take the title for herself this year.

How to Watch La Vuelta Feminina: Peacock

106th giro d'italia 2023 stage 21

While the Tour de France gets all the prestige, riders generally consider the Giro d’Italia to be much, much harder.

This year’s race begins in the Piedmont region and–aside from a brief trip into Switzerland–stays within Italy for each of its 21 stages. Always characterized by its mountains, the 2024 Giro d’Italia boasts five high mountain stages and four summit finishes, including a trip over the infamous Stelvio, the tallest climb in this year’s race.

The Giro will also feature two individual time trials, which is perhaps why Tadej Pogačar has made the Italian grand tour one of his goals. This will be the Slovenian’s first time competing in the Italian grand tour, and he’s easily the top favorite.

This year will also mark the first Giro appearance for Wout van Aert, who says he’s not targeting the General Classification. But given the fact that he’s not racing the Tour de France this summer, we can’t help but wonder if he’ll shoot for a top-10 or top-5 finish overall.

Before the arrival of the Tour de France Femmes a few years ago, the Giro d’Italia Donne was the most prestigious women’s stage race on the calendar. But it was plagued by sketchy organization, and in some years seemed to be teetering on the edge of collapse.

But now the event is organized by the same group that organizes the men’s Giro which means better support, more stability and–hopefully–improved TV coverage.

The race begins with a short time trial in Brescia, then works its way south, with two flat stages for sprinters, three punchy stages for breakaway and classics riders, and two mountain stages on the final weekend, including a Stage 6 summit finish on the Blockhaus, one of the Giro’s most famous climbs.

Van Vleuten won last year’s edition by almost four minutes, taking her fourth victory in the Italian grand tour. This year–with the Tour de France Femmes taking place a few weeks later than it usually does–we wonder if Demi Vollering will make the race a target, perhaps in an attempt to win all three women’s grand tours in one season.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 21

The 2024 Tour de France should be one of the most exciting editions in decades, with an Italian start, a route filled with mountains, and a non-traditional finish in Nice instead of Paris.

The race begins in Florence with the first of three Italian stages and is then followed by an early trip through the Alps (Stage 4) that should sort the General Classification just a couple of days into the Tour’s first week. This will also be the first men’s Tour to feature a gravel stage, with Stage 9 covering 32km of gravel roads through the Champagne vineyards around Troyes before the Tour’s first Rest Day.

The second week brings the race through the rugged Massif Central and into the Pyrenees, where the week ends with back-to-back summit finishes including the Tour’s return to Plateau de Beille, one of the toughest ascents in the Pyrenees.

The Tour’s final week takes a southerly route back to the Alps and a final showdown in and around Nice that concludes with an individual time trial–35 years after American Greg Lemond overtook France’s Laurent Fignon to win the 1989 Tour in a time trial on the Tour’s final stage. This is a big change: the Tour usually ends in Paris, but with the Olympics set to begin in the City of Lights on July 26th, the Tour needs to finish elsewhere so as to avoid any logistical conflicts.

Vingegaard, the two-time defending champion, will be back to try and score a hat trick, but he’ll face the toughest list of challengers he’s ever seen including Pogačar, who’s hoping to win the Giro-Tour double; Evenepoel, who’s riding his first Tour de France; and Roglič, his former teammate and now newest rival. With a difficult course and a star-studded startlist, this could be a Tour for the ages.

Taking place about two weeks after the conclusion of the Tour de France–and one before the start of the Tour de France Femmes–gold medals will be awarded in the men’s and women’s road races at the Olympics in Paris.

Covering 278km and 158km, respectively, both the men’s and women’s races are expected to favor the sport’s Classics stars, with lots of short, punchy climbs and a finishing circuit through downtown Paris that takes the riders up the cobbled Côté de la Butte Montmartre three times. So it comes as no surprise that riders like Mathieu van der Poel, Tadej Pogačar, Wout van Aert, Lotte Kopecky, and Demi Vollering have the Olympics written in nice big capital letters on their calendars.

If you watched last year’s world championships in Glasgow last August, you’ve seen what a challenging urban circuit can do to a peloton, and with smaller teams (countries can start 1-4 riders depending on their nation’s UCI ranking), fewer riders overall (just 90 in each event), and no race radios (so riders will get less information and direction from their team cars), we’re expecting aggressive, dramatic outcomes.

1st tour de france femmes 2022 stage 1

The first two editions of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift started on the last day of the men’s Tour de France. But with the Olympics coming closely on the heels of the men’s Tour, this year’s third edition of the incredibly popular Tour de France Femmes was pushed back a few weeks–which is great because it means the race doesn’t have to share the spotlight with the world’s largest sporting event.

In addition to changing its place on the calendar, more than half of this year’s Tour de France Femmes will take place outside of France with three stages taking place in and around Rotterdam (including two stages in one day on Tuesday, August 13), a transitional stage that takes the race from Valkenburg to Liège on Stage 5, and a stage starting in Bastogne (Stage 5) before finally bringing the riders across the border and into France.

But just like the first two editions, it’s the final weekend that packs the biggest punch, with two days in the Alps with back-to-back summit finishes including a finish atop Alpe d’Huez–arguably the most famous climb in professional cycling–on the last day of the Tour.

Last year, Vollering and SD Worx dominated the Tour. The team won four of the Tour’s eight stages, held the yellow jersey from start to finish, put two riders on the final podium, took the green jersey for winning the Points Classification, and won the Tour’s Teams Classification. Defending Vollering’s title is one of the team’s main goals 2024.

As the final grand tour of the season, the Vuelta a España is traditionally one of the last chances for riders hoping to end the year on high note, earn a contract for the following season, or get themselves in shape for the world championships in late-September. So with lots of mountains and a start list filled with motivated riders, the Vuelta always delivers some of the year’s most exciting racing.

This year’s race begins in Portugal, with two time trials, eight mountain stages, and several jagged, hilly stages (some of which have short uphill finishes of their own) to test the riders. Every year the organizers create a course that seems to say: “If you’re not a climber, stay home.”

At this point in the year it’s tough to predict who will add the Spanish grand tour to their program as lots of things can change between now and August. But we’re hoping that last year’s surprise-but-not-a-surprise winner, American Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike), will get a chance to come back and defend his title from last year.

96th uci cycling world championships glasgow 2023 men elite road race

After taking place in Glasgow in early-August last year (as part of the UCI’s “mega world championships”), this year’s World Road Race Championships are heading to Zurich and moving back to their usual spot on the calendar in late-September, with our favorite events–the Elite Road Races–taking place on the final weekend of the month.

On Saturday, the Elite Women will complete a 154km road race that begins in Ulster and ends with four laps of a tough, 27km finishing circuit in and around Zurich. The next day, the Elite Men will cover a 274km course that starts in Winterthur and concludes with seven laps of the Zurich finishing circuit.

This is another race for Classics riders, with a finishing circuit that should favor the riders we saw at the front of last year’s World Championship road races. In the women’s race, Kopecky will be a favorite to defend her title, but she’ll face stiff competition from the Dutch, most likely led by her SD Worx teammate Vollering, who–despite being one of the sport’s best racers–has never won a rainbow jersey. We love how races like the Olympics and Worlds pit riders who spend much of the season as teammates against one another.

The men’s race should play out in a similar way–albeit with fewer teammates racing against teammates. The defending champion–van der Poel–should again be the top favorite, with the Belgians–led by van Aert and Evenepoel–his biggest rivals.

EU Policy. Cycling Declaration hailed as ‘historic’ moment for Europe

From left to right: MEP Karima Delli, transport committee chair, Belgian deputy PM Georges Gilkinet, EU transport commissioner Adina Valean.

Although it carries no legal force, cycling advocates have greeted an undertaking by governments and MEPs to make Europe a more bike friendly place as an important recognition of the health and environmental benefits and a milestone in EU transport policy.

Cycling is “one of the most sustainable, healthy and efficient” ways to cut greenhouse gas emissions, EU governments have agreed as they committed to build more cycle lanes and secure parking places, improve safety for riders, and promote schemes to encourage a switch from four wheels to two.

The undertaking is part of a European Declaration on Cycling signed in Brussels on Wednesday (3 April) during a gathering of transport ministers organised by Belgium, which currently chairs intergovernmental talks as holder of the rotating EU Council presidency.

Governments commit to “significantly increasing safe and coherent cycling infrastructure across Europe” and increasing safely for cyclists, “in particular by physical separation of cycle paths from motorised traffic where relevant, or by ensuring safe speeds in mixed traffic”.

The European Cyclists’ Federation welcomed the declaration. “Today, we celebrate…a truly historic achievement,” the advocacy group’s director Jill Warren said. “This declaration holds the potential to unlock the benefits of cycling for millions of European citizens.”

The declaration was also endorsed by the European Parliament, which had called early last year for the EU executive to develop a dedicated cycling strategy with the aim of doubling the number of kilometres cycled across the union by 2030.

Also contributing to the momentum generated by a surge in cycling and the deployment of cycle routes during the covid pandemic, pro-cycling EU member states Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Ireland, Denmark and the Netherlands produced their own declaration in 2022. They were subsequently joined by another ten, including France and Spain.

The European Commission followed up last October with the draft text for a joint EU declaration. The text signed by all three EU institutions this week did not go as far as the parliament had wanted, with no concrete targets and no legal obligations, but was nonetheless hailed as a “an important step” by Belgian deputy prime minister Georges Gilkinet.

"The declaration was the first ever European level text setting out a general policy on cycling,” Gilkinet, who also serves as Belgium’s mobility minister, told reporters today (4 April) at the end of the two-day ministerial meeting that he chaired. “For the first time, the bicycle is recognised as an element of mobility policy at the European level,” he said.

Transport Commissioner Adina Valean, who signed on behalf of the EU executive, said implementation of the undertakings set out in the declaration were a matter for governments and regions “who choose to do so”.

She stressed, however, that the Commission had sought to promote cycling through other pieces of legislation, such as a recently adopted law on passengers rights which requires train operators to provide spaces for bicycle transport.

The ministerial summit also yielded a Brussels Declaration on "the mobility of tomorrow", which, as well as echoing the main points of the agreement on cycling, also called on the next Commission to make "the modal shift towards rail transport a central objective of European mobility policy".

EU institutions commit to boost cycling across Europe

On 3 April, the EU took another important step in reducing transport emissions by adopting the European Declaration on Cycling. In the margins of the Informal Transport European Council, Adina Vălean , Commissioner for Transport, signed the declaration together with Karima Delli , Chair of the Transport Commitee of the European Parliament and Georges Gilkinet , Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium.

The declaration recognises cycling as a sustainable, accessible, and affordable means of transport, with strong added value for the EU economy. It includes clear commitments, such as safe and coherent cycling networks in cities, better links with public transport and secure parking spaces and access to recharging points for e-bikes. These commitments shall be taken at EU, national regional and local level. These are all necessary elements in improving the quality and quantity of cycling infrastructure across Member States and making cycling more attractive to the public.

Based on a proposal launched by the European Commission in October 2023 and responding to requests from the European Parliament and Member States, the declaration constitutes a joint political commitment and a strategic compass for existing and future policies and initiatives related to cycling.

Commissioner for Transport, Adina Vălean, said:  "We recognise cycling's myriad benefits: it reduces pollution, eases urban congestion, and promotes healthier lifestyles. Moreover, cycling is a cornerstone of the European industry, driving innovation and growth while creating high-quality local jobs. Embracing cycling aligns with the EU's industrial strategy and its objectives."

How La Rochelle became the model French club – and European giants

From a club of sailors to one dominated by superstars, the side from Atlantic coast is aiming for a third straight Champions Cup title

For the second consecutive year La Rochelle beat Leinster to claim Europe's top prize

France’s Atlantic shore is no stranger to a storm and since 1991, halfway up its coastline, one of its most destructive has been brewing. Not in the skies this time, but instead on the rugby fields of La Rochelle, where the two-time Champions Cup victors, with their citadel stadium and array of World XV contenders, have transformed this city into one which is now as renowned for its sport as its port.

It wasn’t always like this. As recently as 2014, this giant of French rugby was sleeping in the second division. Indeed, until their most recent ascension to the Top 14, 10 years ago, La Rochelle had only spent 20 seasons at the top table, out of a possible 132 in French league history. Stade Rochelais, as they are known in France, have never won the prestigious Bouclier de Brennus, the slabbed trophy awarded to the winner of the French first division (present day Top 14) and, besides, in France, a club situated outside of the south-west heartlands, needs to achieve something extraordinary for people to stand up and take notice.

Thankfully, in 1991, it did. Vincent Merling, a local coffee magnate who played, coached and managed at the club, took on the presidency amid debts of a million francs and, over a 33-year period, and counting, catapulted La Rochelle to its current impressive state. From a club of sailors with hardly an international to speak of, La Rochelle is now a club of superstars; one of France’s grandest, with the likes of Uini Atonio, Will Skelton , Levani Botia and Grégory Alldritt on the books, and Ronan O’Gara, the wily Irishman , at the helm. This weekend, they travel to Dublin for a Champions Cup quarter-final against the same team, Leinster, that they defeated in their past two European triumphs .

“When I was elected president the club was in financial and cultural trouble,” Merling, 73, tells Telegraph Sport. “The path we have taken, two-time European champions, is extraordinary. I never would have dreamed of being European champions. Not possible.

“But those titles were the consequences of what we had been building throughout the years. Every year, with always the same energy, and always the same culture and identity at the club. We never thought we’d have such success, but what became clear was that the success was the result of what we were doing steadily, year on year, to develop and grow.”

Vincent Merling

Sitting in Merling’s minimalist office overlooking a training session, Monsieur Le Président is also Monsieur La Rochelle. Born and raised in the city, the players who stroll past greet him as if he were a member of the squad. He is the one, after all, who has magnetised this club within the city and the wider Charente-Maritime region: 13,000 season-ticket holders in a 17,000-seater, recently redeveloped Stade Marcel-Deflandre, one of the most magnificent places to watch rugby, approaching 100 straight sell-outs.

“This is my office but I’m everywhere,” he says. “I live rugby; here, there and everywhere. In reality, I don’t have an office. My office is everywhere.

“I am a volunteer, but also a partner and shareholder through [Cafés Merling]. I am in the middle of retiring from my business and my children will succeed me – three children – so now I am 100 per cent on the rugby side of things. But it’s also 100 per cent joy, 100 per cent pleasure, and 100 per cent privilege. I love it.

“Where rugby is concerned, as long as I’m physically able – in the head, too – I will always be here.”

Another reason for Merling’s ubiquity is that he “hates change”. Under his presidency, in 33 years, La Rochelle have staggeringly had only five coaches: Jean-Pierre Ellisalde – club legend and father of former France captain Jean-Baptiste; Serge Milhas; Patrice Collazo; Jono Gibbes (with O’Gara as understudy); then O’Gara alone .

Vincent Merling and Ronan O'Gara

“A strong value of mine is stability,” he says. “But it’s also important to make the right choices! Our rugby culture and identity – as a club – has been the same since I became president. I’m the protector of that.

“Ronan has furthered the club’s ambition. We were too humble. Ronan, a great manager who made the club believe that we could win titles, gave us ambition.”

Merling invested a “small sum back in the day” but he is not a sugar-daddy – far from it. La Rochelle, alongside Toulouse and Bayonne, are one of just three Top 14 clubs without an individual majority shareholder. Merling ensured from day one that ownership would be split between shareholders and the amateur arm of the club.

“Stade Rochelais does not belong to one person,” he says. “The notion of it being a club for all is very important.

“The club belongs to eight partners who each own seven per cent of the club. They are majority owners. There’s also the [amateur] association which owns 30 per cent. Therefore, we are in a system of collective management. We are one of the rare French clubs to have positive financial results at the end of the year.

“This club lives off the money that it earns. It does not survive on the money of a benefactor, to fill a deficit. We have 800 sponsors, some of whom are major, and we have a budget of around €40 million (£34 million). And we won’t put the institution in financial peril by [signing big-money players]. We want to give academy players game time as soon as possible.”

While not homegrown per se, that self-sufficiency is embodied by players like Botia or Atonio, who arrived as nobodies during the ProD2 years and who will leave with deity status, having already told Merling that they will finish their careers in La Rochelle. The tales of Botia and Atonio are remarkable but, on Merling’s 33-year journey, have there been any sliding-doors moments, small instances of serendipity where the stars aligned with far-reaching consequences?

“We haven’t had good luck or bad luck,” he says. “We have just been there, playing our rugby, and that either makes us win or lose.”

More often than not of late, it has been the former.
