Powered by the mighty river and fed by boxcars of grain rolling in from the plains, the industry gave Minneapolis bragging rights as the “Flour Milling Capital of the World.” Explore where old mingles with new at Mill City Museum, built into the ruins of what was once the world’s largest flour mill.

Mill City Museum
Take a ride back in time at the Mill City Museum . The ruins of what was once the world’s largest flour mill have been turned into an exploratory venture into the flour industry, the city of Minneapolis and the Mississippi river.
The flour milling industry in Minneapolis was huge in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Grain came in via the railway, and St. Anthony Falls was used to generate water power. The Washburn A Mill was built after a fatal flour dust explosion took out the previous milling facility. The new A Mill building was incredibly advanced at the time, allowing for production of nearly 12 million loaves of bread per day. With its progressive milling capabilities and unbeatable production, Minneapolis became known as the “Flour Milling Capital of the World” and was referred to as “Mill City” for nearly 50 years.
Eventually the technology became outdated and the need for this milling facility no longer existed. The building was shut down in 1965, leaving it vacant and unused. In 1992, a fire nearly took the building down, leaving only a shell of the historic facility. In 2003, Mill City Museum opened in a structure built into the ruins of the A Mill building. The museum offers the chance to take a look at the milling industry and the impact it had on the city. Today, visitors can explore the rich history and participate in the storytelling of this part of Minneapolis. Witness baking demonstrations, sample fresh bread, observe a model mill explosion, get an amazing view of St. Anthony Falls and the Stone Arch Bridge, experience the Flour Tower, and while you’re there be sure to watch “Minneapolis in 19 Minutes Flat!” This is truly a Minneapolis icon that you don’t want to miss!

Visitors can take a firsthand look at how Winnebago RVs are built in Forest City
If spring has you dreaming of the open road. Winnebago is inviting you to visit a place where those dreams come true.
From now through October, the top-10 RV maker is offering free tours of its Forest City plant, where it has been making motor homes for more than 60 years, as well as its Lake Mills camper van plant. Sights include Forest City's “Big Bertha,” the building that houses two 1,000-foot-plus assembly lines where huge Class A and C motor homes are bolted together.
Plant tours have been a Winnebago staple for more than 40 years and company officials say a typical summer will bring more than 10,000 viewers through the facility, peaking around the time of the annual July Camp Winnebago gathering of Winnebago owners in Forest City.
For Winnebago, it's an opportunity to connect with its customer base and highlight its RVs to prospective buyers.
“The factory tour allows us to highlight the processes and procedures that make Winnebago RVs best in class," said Kelli Harms, marketing manager for Winnebago.
Winnebago Industries was incorporated in Forest City on Feb. 12, 1958, and adopted its current name two years later. The company in 2021 moved its headquarters to the Minneapolis suburb of Eden Prairie, Minnesota , but maintains most of its manufacturing facilities in Iowa.
Factory tours of the Forest City plant are available at noon Monday through Friday and at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Tours of the Lake Mills facility, where camper vans are built, are at 9:30 a.m. Monday and Wednesday.
More: As Kum & Go is sold, here's a look at other Iowa-born, but no longer based, companies
All tours originate at the Winnebago Industries Visitors Center at 1045 S. Fourth St. in Forest City and last about two hours.
The tour of Forest City plant includes several steps of the manufacturing process, culminating in a birds-eye view of the assembly lines from Big Bertha's mezzanine.
The Lake Mills facility features a walking tour showing the complete construction process for camper vans.
From 2022: Winnebago takes the wraps off new all-electric RV concept
Reservations are recommended for both the Forest City and Lake Mills tours. Call 641-585-6936. The Visitor’s Center is accessible to those with disabilities, but the factory tours include staircases, significant walking and standing.
Closed toe shoes are required, and visitors must be at least 16. Visitors also can view a virtual factory tour at the Visitors Center.
Winnebago employs about 2,000 workers in northern Iowa.

Finnish guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari joined MEGADETH last September after the band's longtime axeman Kiko Loureiro , announced earlier that month that he would sit out the next leg of MEGADETH 's "Crush The World" tour in order to stay home with his children back in Finland. It was later revealed that Mäntysaari would continue to play guitar for MEGADETH for the foreseeable future, with Loureiro seemingly having no plans to return.
The 37-year-old Mäntysaari was born in Tampere, Finland and began playing guitar at the age of 12. In 2004, he joined the band WINTERSUN . He has also been a member of SMACKBOUND since 2015.
MEGADETH played its first concert with Mäntysaari on September 6, 2023 at Revel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Loureiro officially joined MEGADETH in April 2015, about five months after Chris Broderick 's exit from the group.
Since its inception in 1983, MEGADETH has ascended from its raw thrash metal roots to become an unstoppable force in the heavy metal world. With founder Dave Mustaine at the helm, MEGADETH 's journey has been marked by a penchant for pushing the boundaries of speed, technicality, and complexity in their music. Their groundbreaking album "Rust In Peace" , released in 1990, is frequently cited as a seminal work in the thrash metal genre. Along with the critically acclaimed "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?" , it cemented MEGADETH 's place in the annals of metal history.
Over four decades, the band's discography has earned numerous certifications, including platinum and multi-platinum awards, with albums like "Countdown To Extinction" and "Youthanasia" achieving widespread critical acclaim. 2016's "Dystopia" not only marked a high point with their first Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance" after twelve nominations but also set the stage for their latest triumph, "The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead!" in 2022. MEGADETH 's status as part of the "Big Four" of thrash metal underscores their trailblazing role in the genre, laying the groundwork for countless bands and musicians who have followed in their wake.
