Frequently Asked Questions

What is the health & fitness association passport program.

The HFA Passport Program provides members of enrolled Health & Fitness Association clubs and studios with guest privileges at a network of participating HFA facilities worldwide so they can stay in shape when they travel. What’s more, members of participating clubs receive a 25% discount when purchasing a one-day pass at a Passport club.

Because the HFA Passport Program is reciprocal, enrolled clubs must commit to welcoming Passport visitors from clubs and studios at least 50 miles/80 kilometers away and to extending them a savings of 25% on a one-day pass.

What are the benefits of enrolling in the HFA Passport Program powered by TrainAway?

In addition to the added value to your members that we mentioned above, the HFA Passport Program can generate revenue for your business. We’ll provide you with the tools you need to promote the offering to your members and train your staff. And TrainAway has several features that make the process easy. The TrainAway app allows for an easy check-in process when Passport users visit your club, and you can choose to receive funds from these visits via automatic deposit to your business’ bank account or e-Check.

How do I enroll in the HFA Passport Program, powered by TrainAway?

The first step is to complete this enrollment form to tell us more about your club and to provide us with information so we can deposit your earnings from visitors to your club. After enrolling you will receive an email that includes a link to download a Passport toolkit containing resources to assist in communicating the program to your staff and your members, and your company's unique invitation code, which your traveling members will enter in their profile on the TrainAway app, in order to save 25% when purchasing a one-day pass at HFA Passport clubs.

How will my traveling members use the HFA Passport Program, powered by TrainAway?

It’s simple! Your members will need to create an account on the TrainAway app and enter the invitation code on their profile to receive a savings of 25% when purchasing a one-day pass at HFA Passport facilities. Enrolled facilities receive a Passport toolkit that includes marketing materials you can share with your members.

Time to travel with ASI’s Fitness Passport

By Maria Flores , Feb. 23, 2021

While travel is still discouraged to slow the spread of COVID-19, ASI Campus Recreation developed the upcoming Fitness Passport for students to travel virtually by attending weekly fitness classes centered around diverse countries.

The Fitness Passport will consist of classes hosted by ASI group fitness instructors in cardio, dance, martial arts and meditative classes that are all focused on a cultural theme.

“A lot of fitness comes from different parts of the world,” said Mark Gonzales, a third-year kinesiology student and ASI fitness instructor. “The idea is you will attend a group fitness class virtually and just like the punch card system that we used to have we send you a digital passport.”

Gonzales added that for every fitness class attended, students will earn a stamp, and if they reach at least 15 stamps they will qualify for a giveaway at the end of the semester.

Ivan Serrano, ASI fitness coordinator, and his team of student fitness supervisors created the program as an advancement of the “Frequent Fitness Stamp Card Program,” an on-campus program previously offered at the BRIC.

The BRIC supplied stamp cards to registered CPP students. For every fitness class attended, a hole was punctured to the student’s card. At the end of the semester, if students attended 24 or more fitness classes they would qualify for the “Fitness Finally,” a dinner at the BRIC’s poolside to celebrate and award active students for their engagement.

Although the Frequent Fitness Stamp Card Program is no longer operating due to the BRIC’s closure in March, both programs were established to encourage physical activity, but the Fitness Passport took on a theme.

Cesar Cruz, a fourth-year English education student and ASI fitness supervisor shared, “The idea came from hearing other folks. They wanted to travel and how do we do this? The Fitness Passport.”

Since last October, many discussions among the ASI coordinator and supervisors took place to launch the digital passport. It was scheduled to release before the spring semester began, but due to some setbacks the release date remains uncertain.

“Our plan was to have everything ready at the start of the semester on the 25th of January,” Serrano said. “We finalized all the visual aspects that we needed so the digital stamp, the passport forms, and the small icons make it what it is.”

As the passport program readies to launch, ASI invites students to participate in other programs offered throughout the semester. Serrano shared that the first digital passport stamp could have been earned through the bootcamp circuit class offered on Feb. 4. Any fitness class associated with ASI fitness group programs will qualify for a passport stamp.

“At the end of each week we are going to tally up our attendance list, to see who registered for the passport and which other programs, they attended during the week,” said Serrano. “For folks who already registered right now, don’t sweat; you will still get the credit you got for attending our programs.”

To earn stamps for the Fitness Passport, registered student can access weekly live fitness groups free of charge. Before an event starts, an email will be sent offering free resources including music to play in the background, especially for meditative practices, along with recommended equipment.

“Take advantage of the programs, it’s a great resource, especially for those freshly starting,” said Cruz. “It’s a great way to segment to your fitness lifestyle.”

What is a Passport Program and Should Your Fitness Center Join One?

In the current environment , gym owners must leverage every tool possible to promote increased membership.

Around the world, gyms are slowly starting to reopen in the wake of COVID-19. For obvious reasons, however, enrollment levels aren’t quite as strong as before the pandemic. Resultantly, it’s especially important to work on building your membership numbers.

It’s a challenging time for gyms. Nevertheless, facility owners around the world are rising to the challenge .

With this in mind, passionate gym owners are finding alternative ways to generate revenue. Many are taking advantage of new technology. However, participating in a fitness passport network is also a good way to generate revenue for your club.

Continue reading to learn more about passport programs and whether your fitness center should join one.

A New Business Climate Calls for New Tactics

A New Business Climate Calls for New Tactics

The fitness industry is in the middle of one of the most challenging periods ever. Many fitness centers have closed.

Others have scaled back their staff. Yet other fitness center owners have realized that they’ll need to broaden their business model.

As an example, some club owners have invested in advanced fitness technology. The technology enables them to provide profitable value-added services such as non-invasive body assessment scanning . With this kind of equipment, gyms can help clients battle challenging conditions such as obesity.

Furthermore, gym owners are using such innovations to overcome today’s challenges. As things stand, change is essential to sustain operations in the new normal.

Club owners who invest in new concepts and expand their offerings will survive. However, those that fail to change will fall by the wayside.

Technology is one way that you can take advantage of innovations to help your establishment thrive. However, you can also tap into your area’s transient fitness clients by participating in a passport fitness program.

How a Fitness Passport Program Works

Slowly, governments around the world are lifting gym restrictions as conditions improve. As this happens, revenue will once again start to flow.

However, you may have some work to do to get your membership count back up to pre-pandemic levels. Participation in a fitness passport program is a great way to do just that.

By signing on with a fitness passport program, you’ll gain instant access to clientele. Furthermore, you can provide value-added service by giving your members a way to access other gyms. You may wonder why you would want to send your members to another gym, but there’s a method to this madness.

Participation in the fitness passport program is a great way to boost revenue. With this kind of program, members can frequent facilities as often as they like. Furthermore, they can also visit different facilities.

For example, a fitness passport member may want to use one gym during the workweek. However, they may want to use one closer to home on the weekends.

Alternatively, a fitness client may go off on vacation or holiday. Still, they can take advantage of their fitness passport to access a participating gym. They can find locations easily online. Likewise, passport holders from other gyms will visit your facility once you join a fitness passport network.

What Is a Fitness Passport?

What Is a Fitness Passport?

There are fitness passport programs of varying degrees around the world. One notable fitness passport program is in Australia. The program is simply called “Fitness Passport.”

The Fitness Passport program gives members access to multiple gyms and pools. The program also provides access for family members.

Members can use the passport as many times as they like. In Australia, the Fitness Passport program makes it easier for members to achieve their health goals. Participants can access any facility available through the program.

A fitness passport is a different kind of gym membership. It allows members and their immediate family members to use any fitness passport gyms.

Membership in Fitness Passport enables members to take advantage of a range of facilities. They can also use a vast selection of participating pools or spas at gyms.

A New Tool for Boosting Membership

A New Tool for Boosting Membership

With a fitness passport, members receive exceptional value. What’s more, they’ll have more passport program options than they could ever pursue.

The Fitness Passport program is a closed network. In other words, only employees of select companies can participate in the program. However, there’s no fee for companies to join the network.

It’s easy for qualifying individuals to join a fitness passport program. For example, a candidate for a fitness passport would simply navigate to the website to set up a new account.

There, they’d enter their bank details, employee ID number and provide a photo. They’ll then receive an email with their membership information.

By partnering with Fitness Passport, you can increase your monthly revenue. If you operate in Australia and you’d like to join Fitness Passport, you can contact the organization for more information .

New call-to-action

Tap Into a Global Market With Fitness Passport Participation

Fitness Passport isn’t the only network in the business. The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) sponsors a passport program with global affiliates.

The IHRSA is a nonprofit trade association that represents the fitness industry. The organization is dedicated to promoting better health and regular exercise. It’s served as an advocate for the fitness industry for more than 30 years.

The IHRSA Passport Program is available to gym owners and clients around the world. Members of the program can find locations easily using the TrainAway app. Gym owners send invitation codes to members to their clients allowing them to sign up for the network.

Members can take advantage of several passport program offerings. After signing up, for instance, users save 25% off one-day passes at participating IHRSA passport clubs.

TrainAway manages the payments. They’ll then forward a monthly activity report and repayments to your club each month.

There’s no gym owner enrollment fee to participate in the program. However, you must have membership and IHRSA.

There’s also no cost or work involved in setting up technology for the program. TrainAway handles all the work on the back end.

Added Convenience Equals Added Business

As of 2019, there are more than 1,200 IHRSA Passport Program locations around the world. Members can access a global network of participating fitness facilities.

The IHRSA has digitized the entire process in partnership with TrainAway. With the technology, traveling fitness fans can find your facility easily.

The IHRSA Passport Program has participating locations in more than 35 countries spanning four continents. Users of the program span 140 countries around the world.

Furthermore, the app is available in many languages. No matter where you operate, you can benefit by participating in the IHRSA Passport Program or other similar programs.

Passport members enjoy TrainAway’s intuitive interface. It makes the service easy to use.

Areas with more tourism tend to achieve better results by participating in the IHRSA’s passport program. What’s more, it gives visitors from around the world an opportunity to experience different gym facilities. Visitors enjoy the convenience and discounts, and gym owners appreciate the added revenue.

For some gym owners, the IHRSA Passport Program is priceless. It serves as an excellent membership building and marketing tool, especially among the corporate set.

Growing Your Fitness Business in Today’s Market

Now is the time to broaden your business model. Another way to do so is by investing in innovative technology.

The pandemic has shown us that poor health makes us vulnerable. For example, research shows that obesity can complicate the symptoms of COVID-19 considerably.

You can invest in a tool such as the Styku 3D body scanner to help your clients maintain optimal health. People don’t have the ability to perform this kind of important scan at home. You provide a highly beneficial service to individuals by offering this benefit.

Furthermore, body scans can prove profitable. For example, you could offer 3D body scanning specials, such as three scans for $99.

Whether you’re thinking about opening a gym or own an existing facility, it’s important to create a one-of-a-kind experience for your members. You’ll need to make sure that your gym stands out from the crowd. It’s challenging staying ahead of the pack , but you can do it with the right tools.

3D scanning technology benefits both your clients and employees. It makes it easier to evaluate your members’ health.

It’s also an excellent selling point for clients who are serious about tracking their progress. With 3D scanning technology, you can make tracking gains a part of your clients’ regular workout routine.

Today, you need to offer something special. You must provide value-added benefits in order to grow. Benefits and features such as fitness challenges , 3D body scanning, and fitness passport participation can enable you to do just that.

Fitness Passport: how it works and what you’ll get

fitness passport travel

COVID-19 update: Due to the temporary shutdown of non-essential services, which includes gyms and pools, Fitness Passport has suspended all memberships from Midday March 23, 2020 and stopped direct debit payments until these restrictions have been lifted.

Once these restrictions are lifted, your membership will continue as normal. If you wish to continue your suspension once these restrictions are lifted, please contact us to advise of new dates.

An announcement on this date will be able to be found on our FAQ page here.

To view updated information, click here

Registration for Fitness Passport is open across WSLHD – and we’d love you to sign up.

Hundreds of people are already on board – not bad, given registrations only opened two weeks ago. If you haven’t got around to signing up, do it now. Better still, grab a workmate and get fit together.

This is how it works: First, go to our intranet  for details on how to register. Once we get 1100 registrations, the program will go live.

Once it does, you’ll receive your Fitness Passport card. You will have access to more than 400 gyms and pools across NSW.

Membership will provide entry to all 400 facilities. You can go as often as you like, and to as many different facilities as you like. If it’s convenient to go to a gym in Blacktown or Parramatta on workdays, but you’d like to try out Wylie’s Baths at Coogee on the weekend, no problem.

If you’re travelling to the Central Coast for work, you’ll find a host of Fitness Passport gyms and pools there. There are gyms and pools everywhere from Broken Hill to Coffs Harbour, all accessible through your Fitness Passport membership.

Popular chains like Fitness First, Anytime Fitness and Crunch all have facilities on the list. Just make sure you’ve checked individual locations to ensure the one you want to visit is there. And even if it isn’t, there’s every chance another gym or pool in the area will be.

For more information about family memberships, what to do if you have an existing gym membership, your eligibility and what classes are covered, visit:  http://wslhdintranet.wsahs.nsw.gov.au/Fitness-Passport/Fitness-Passport-FAQ-/fitness-passport-faq

The deadline for sign-up is Friday, March 17. Don’t miss out. Do it now.

Generally, you’ll be eligible for Fitness Passport membership if you are:

• Paid directly by WSLHD

• Full-time WSLHD permanent staff

• Part-time WSLHD permanent staff

• Temporary WSLHD employees (who are paid via WSLHD payroll) who have more than 12 months remaining on their contract

Generally, you’ll be ineligible to apply if you fall into the following categories:

• Agency and labour hire staff

• Contingent workers

• Temporary employees who have less than 12 months remaining on their contract

• Employees whose contract has expired and are working without a current contract

• Any employee who is not employed by WSLHD

Fitness Passport is the first step in WSLHD’s employee wellbeing program, and will be followed by more initiatives throughout the year

Best Fitness Holidays & Retreats

David Mason

Temptation of frozen daiquiris on sunny days can leave you coming home from a vacation needing another. What's the secret? Make your next trip all about wellness. Get inspired with the world's best fitness holidays and retreats below.

Fitness Retreats Explored

TLDR:  Sometimes you want your holiday to be more downward dog than down the pan, and while I plan what to do with the back half of my year, I began to shortlist the best fitness retreats Mother Earth can offer. In this guide I’ll summarise them for you, highlighting the best for every type of exercise and well being fan.

Quick Answer

Our top all-round pick for the best fitness retreat is  WINNER , click to read.

Why go on a fitness holiday?

Imagine combining the ‘chill’ of a vacation with the benefits of an organised fitness routine. That’s a fitness holiday for you! It’s not just about sweating it out in the gym or doing endless yoga poses (though there’s plenty of that if you want!). It’s about a holistic approach to wellness. Think plant-based eating, full immersion in nature, and activities that nourish both your body and soul.

Every retreat has its own unique flavor, from meditative yoga sessions by the beach to ball busting HIT classes in the jungle. So, whether you’re looking to find inner peace, shed a few pounds, or just break the monotony of your regular gym routine, there’s a fitness holiday out there with your name on it.

In a nutshell, it’s a chance to reset yourself and get away from the things that make holidays feel like they do more harm than good. Just think, 7 days in the sun, eating clean, stretching, training, sweating and pumping your bloodstream with endorphins has got to do wonders for your overall wellbeing.

How to choose a retreat?

When it comes to picking the perfect fitness holiday, it’s all about aligning the retreat’s offerings with your personal goals and preferences. Start by asking yourself what you truly seek: Is it relaxation, intense training, or perhaps a mix of both? Consider the location; do you dream of practicing yoga on a serene beach or hiking in the mountains? Also, think about dietary preferences. Many retreats offer plant-based or specialized meal plans. Lastly, research the instructors and read reviews from past attendees. Ultimately, ask yourself what success looks like to you at the end of the trip and hone in on that. For me, it’s sun, walks, a good resistance gym and plenty of protein – you may want something else. Each to their own.

Fitness Holidays

How we picked the best fitness holidays?

So how we pick the best fitness holidays in this guide? Well, firstly it was not with incentive. We write this independently, so if you made it into the list, it’s because we genuinely thought what you were offering was pretty cool.

Next up, we write on fitness – as we do fitness. Every waking day we try to do some form of activity and have been that way for decades. Even after terrible New Year Eve Parties in Daytona Beach, we still managed to pound out 25-30,000 steps the next day. But as well as our general fanaticism for fitness, we have a love of travel and exploration. Both qualified PTs and both certified passport stamp collectors. This guide is mostly written for us, you just get to look over our shoulders. I guess what I’m trying to say is, we are probably a fairly good judge in these things.

Winners - World's Best Fitness Holidays

In this guide we have tried to pick a good spread of types of retreats and fitness holidays. From sun soaked surf weeks, to yoga in the jungle and much more.

In no particular order, let’s take a look.

Beach Bootcamp

Yoga & zen, 1/10 thanyapura sports & health resort - thailand.

Best fitness hollidays in Asia

Located just 5 miles from Phuket international airport is pick number 1 on our list of the best fitness retreats.

Thanyapura Sports & Health Resort in Phuket is a blend of top-notch sports facilities and wellness amenities. Ideal for fitness lovers, it boasts an Olympic pool, tennis courts, soccer pitch, and a spacious fitness center. Whether you’re into swimming, tennis, or soccer, there’s something for everyone.

However, if you’re purely into weightlifting, it leans more towards athletic and holistic training. In essence, Thanyapura isn’t just a hotel; it’s a holistic wellness hub, promising a refreshing experience for all its guests.

Address: 120/1 Moo 7, Thepkasattri Road, Phuket 83110, Thailand Instagram: @thanyapuraphuket Price Range? $68-$127 (Lower prices seen in special deals) Best For : Sports fans including rugby, soccer, tennis, swimming and general fitness Not For: This is not a hardcore bodybuilding retreat, nor is it really a fully off the grid yoga style resort.

2/10 The Ranch Malibu, Santa Monica CA, USA - Best For Luxury

Best fitness retreat in the USA - The Ranch Malibu

About an hour away from Downtown LA, and LAX, you will find yourself in the Santa Monica Mountains and at the doorstep of the Ranch Malibu. A getaway for many a tech entrepreneur and household name actor, this high end wellness retreat is all about serene vibes and holistic therapy.

That sentence has largely been lifted from their own promo material, but it’s a holiday to fitness fans, that the Orient Express is to train spotters.

Highly rated on Tripadvisor, reviews tout its transformative programs and tranquil ambiance. Those focused solely on specific regimes like weightlifting might seek more specialized venues. Guests here immerse in a digital-detox environment, focusing on rejuvenation and probably no-fap!

As well as Malibu, The Ranch can be found in Hudson Valley NY, Fiuggi,  Italy; and Vail, Colorado. Address: 12220 Cotharin Rd, Malibu, California 90265, USA Instagram: @theranchmalibu Price Range? $10-12,000 per week – Yes, that was not a mistake Best For : Hollywood stars needing to get away from the stress of making movies and being in the press. Not For: 99% of the world due to the pricing. We’re just jealous!

3/10 Haute Glacier Trek, France & Switzerland - Best Fitness Holiday For Adventure

Fitness Holidays

Take on the Haute Glacier Trek by Exodus: Fancy a 15-day adventure across some of Europe’s coolest spots? We’re talking about a trek that takes you from Mont Blanc in France straight to the Matterhorn in Switzerland. Imagine walking through the heart of the Alps, from green valleys to those iconic snowy peaks.

It’s not just a walk in the park; it’s the ultimate mountain challenge. Perfect for those who’ve got some trekking under their belt, but if you’re a newbie, be ready for a proper workout. Want a sneak peek? Hit up Exodus Travels on Instagram or jump onto their website. If you’ve been daydreaming about the Alps, this might be the nudge you need.

It’s a 15 day trip and starts near Chamonix, not a million miles from Geneva airport. Food, flights and accommodation is included, for such a memorable trip, it seems fairly reasonable.

Additional Take: This is a bit of me, I’m going to pester Lee to see if we can do this. We both love a long walk and I’ve always wanted to walk up a mountain. Massive bucket list ticker and a huge fortnight of calorie burning to be had. I imagine though you will need to be well fuelled so there is a strong chance I’d undo the good work done on this level of fitness holiday.

Address: Les Bossons, Chamonix, France Instagram: @exodustravels Price Range? £3100 inc Flights (15 Days) Best For : Adventure seekers. Not For:  Those scared of heights and anyone lacking in incline walking endurance.

4/10 Reset Six Senses, Ibiza, Spain

best fitness holidays in ibiza

Obviously I was going to throw in an Ibiza fitness holiday. I love this place, and don’t go a year without visiting. Which this year took me to the area of Portinatx on the North of the Island, right by the lavish Six Senses hotel which hosts the ‘Midlife:Reset Retreat’ spanning from October 19th to 22nd.

The fitness retreat is a haven for those hitting midlife, offering a mix of meditation, HIIT, yoga, and more. Set by a tranquil beach, attendees get to unwind, reconnect, and prioritize their well-being.  It takes a more holistic approach to fitness, so hardcore weightlifters might want to hire a car and find a nearby gym. But for an alternative way to do Ibiza and come home feeling fresh as fxxk, it’s worth checking out their IG and finding out a little more. Best of all, it probably costs less than a bottle of water at Ushuaïa.

Additional Take: Set in a fantastic hotel in a hidden gem of a beach bay, this is a few days spent very well. There is a fantastic walk from the hotel to the top of a nearby scenic viewpoint, that takes about 60 minutes as a round trip. When you get back from what is a great incline step blaster, jump into the sea and de-sweat. The bay has fairly still water, so I loved diving in to the sea and aiming for a ‘length’ or two of the 300m wide swimming zones.

All in all, you’re looking at 90 minutes of overall conditioning for free – plus a tan. Will definitely return.

Address: Camí de Sa Torre, 71,  07810, Sant Joan de Labritja, Illes Balears Instagram: @thirtyeightdegreesnorth Price Range? £2500-3400 (4 Days) Best For : 35-55 year olds. Not For: Those who expect to be close to party central to square away a few cheeky vimtos each night.

5/10 Ulpotha, Sri Lanka - Best Fitness Retreat For Yoga Fans

Most zen fitness retreats - Ulpotha, Sri Lanka

Ulpotha in Sri Lanka is where yoga meets nature. Tucked away in the country’s jungle heartland, this retreat offers a mix of yoga and Ayurveda healing. It’s been hailed by big names like National Geographic and The Observer for its top-notch offerings. Think of it as a place to reset, with sessions that cater to both your body and soul. What does that mean? Ayurveda, spiritual counselling and downward dogs in the trees.

Prices vary, but you can snag a 14-night stay for around US$2,352. Where it’s all about holistic well-being, if you fancy a more traditional workout, you will need to settle for calisthenics. Aka – equipment free workouts . Pack a TRX and you’d be golden.

Additional Take: Sri Lanka is lush. I spent a month driving around the island in a Tuk Tuk and it has jungles, safari and fantastic beaches too. It’s a wonderful place to visit and the people are a treasure. This makes it an appealing destination for a fitness holiday. The retreat runs a load of cultural and external excursions too, so you can explore, hike, go rafting, snap photos and feel like you have seen the destination beyond the walls too.

In terms of fitness retreats, this is more ‘Zen Life’ than ‘Life Fitness’, but if you’re curious, check them out on Instagram and get tempted.

Address: 7.907945, 80.365928, Embogama 60718, Sri Lanka Instagram: @ulpotha Price Range? £2000 (14 Days) Best For : 25-75 (All ages) who feel like they need to spend a little time in chill and cleanse mode. Not For: Those who need to lift weights on the regular

6/10 Soul & Surf, Algarve, Portugal - Best Fitness Holiday For Beach Fans

Fitness Holidays

Soul & Surf is a 5 star (Google Reviewed) surf, yoga and personal fitness retreat found soaking up the sun in Portugal’s Algarve region.

The experience blends selfcare with watersports and a dose of deprecation. Calling themselves a sustainable-ish travel experience company they are a great option for travellers looking to do right by the world, while doing right by them.

Algarve isn’t their only fitness holiday destination, they operate out of India, Sri Lanka and from a number of one-off pop ups.

I love the brand but so do the big names in travel reporting. Soul & Surf have  been featured in The Guardian, The Times, Conde Nast and National Geographic.

Additional Take: At around 700-800 Euros for a week as a starting point, their retreats are really well priced. It means it’s open to so many more visitor types and democratises this type of experience. The Algarve is easy to get to, with cheap flights to Faro from all major airports, the beaches are great if not a little cold and for those who want to cap off their trip with a solid party, Albufeira or Vilamoura is only a short drive away.

Address: Quinta da Mesquita, Estr. do Paúl, 8600-325 Lagos, Portugal Instagram: @soulandsurfportugal Price Range? £750 (7 Days) Best For : 20-45 who like hitting the surf or beginners who want to try it. Not For: Non swimmers

7/10 Byron Bay Retreat, Australia - Best Fitness Holiday For Solo Travellers

Fitness Holidays

Expect fires on the beach, cold beers sweating in a stubby holder and being surrounded by backpackers, digital nomads and other solo travellers. New South Wales presents the Byron Bay Retreat.

Hosted by Active Escapes, this 7 day activity break is the perfect fitness holiday for solo travellers and those who like their fitness by the beach. Expect to pay around $2500 Aussie and know you’re going to get a ton of Tik Tok material here.

Byron isn’t their only option, but we didn’t want to leave the Boomerang Brigade out in this guide to the best fitness retreats. So knowing how much we personally enjoy Byron Bay, this escape gets the nod.

Additional Take: This is completely unrelated to the retreat but the last time I came to Byron I was a bit younger and bit more of a dickhead. I was caught out with another girl. So there I am in a dorm room standing in my towel, my girlfriend (until that evening) started hitting me. I end up stark bxllock naked with the towel on the floor, surrounded by a dozen others laying on beds pretending they weren’t watching.

Anyway, it was a while ago, I’m a good guy these days and it’s got nothing to do with Active Escapes trip in Byron. But it reminded me that this place can turn carnage. Don’t judge them for it, just check them out on insta and see for yourself.

Address: 25 Childe St, Byron Bay NSW 2481, Australia Instagram: @activeescapes Price Range? £1700 (7 Days) Best For : 20-40 who like hitting the surf, the idea of it and want to make friends. Not For: Non swimmers – people who want a quiet week

8/10 Casa JOMO, Rio de Janiero - Best Fitness Retreat in Brazil

Fitness Retreat in Brazil, Casa JOMO, Santa Teresa

Nestled in the bohemian heart of Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro, Casa JOMO offers a unique 31-day retreat blending yoga, art, and healthy food. Designed to help guests find balance and rediscover themselves, the retreat provides a serene setting to destress and rejuvenate.

With a focus on individualized care, meals are tailored to each guest’s needs, and a range of activities from samba dance classes to art workshops are offered. It’s a haven for those seeking a holistic wellness experience, in the traditional sense.

With overwhelmingly positive reviews (5 star on the Book Retreats platform, 5 star on Google and 9.1 on Booking), Casa JOMO promises a substantial wellness experience in the vibrant backdrop of Rio.

Personal Take: The 31 day experience is substantive, so when you consider the accommodation, food, facilities and overall personal experience you’re going to get from this, the price is pretty reasonable. What do I like the most? It’s a really charming location and has an incredibly chilled vibe. I’m taking some time away from the 9 to 5 in 2024 and the 31 day Casa JOMO offer is incredibly tempting. Little bonus, is that it is super close to some pretty decent gyms too.

Address: R. Laurinda Santos Lôbo, 136 – Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro – RJ, 20240-270, Brazil Instagram: Not found Price Range? $5300 (31 Days) Best For : Those looking for a holistic approach to wellness, combining yoga, art, veganism and healthy eating. Not For: Protein guzzling, beer slamming, night owls.

9/10 Iron Curtain Sports, Kyrgyzstan - Best Fitness Holiday For Fight Fans

Fitness Holidays

Birthplace of Dmitry Bivol the WBA champ who stopped Canelo Alvarez constant ascent in weight classes in its tracks, Kyrgyzstan is also home to hardcore type of holiday. Iron Curtain Sports host a 7 day boxing fitness retreat which is tough but well run and will push boxers of all levels to improve.

Even getting to the camp in Issyk Kul is tough, it’s 200 km from the nearest airport. But on arrival you’ll be greeted by warm hospitality and experience what it’s like to really train here.

You’ll train 3 times a day, spar with local fighters, improve your technique with hands on coaching and eat together. Meals and accommodation are provided as well as airport transfers.

Personal Take: I’m a boxing fan and if you’re scrolling slowly past this, then you may be too. You’ll know that the ‘Stans seem to produce an endless supply of capable fighters, so this is your chance to see how they do it. It’s geared for boxers of ALL levels, so don’t be put off if you aren’t Calzaghe, for me the best bit is in the brochure. “Drinks provided: water.” Says it all.

This is a real once in a life time trip and well worth it’s spot on our list.

Address: Office 8, 20 Sovetskaya Street, Cholpon Ata, 722315, Kyrgyzstan Instagram: @ironcurtainboxing Price Range? £1215 (7 Days) Best For : People a little bit into combat sports. Those not afraid of donning a pair of boxing gloves and exchanging leather. Not For: Those looking for luxury. This is spartan and designed to be. This is the fitness retreat you come home from feeling insanely proud of yourself. If you don’t love it rough, scroll on by.

10/10 No.1 Bootcamp, St Tropez, France

best all round fitness retreat

No1 Fitness Boot camp is a fitness enthusiast’s dream. Located in the vibrant city of St Tropez, France, this camp offers a mix of power and endurance training, ensuring participants get a complete workout experience. Led by a team of celebrity endorsed PTs, their camps promise a week of challenging physical activities centred in luxury accommodation. From boot camps to CrossFit sessions, participants are guaranteed to break a sweat and push their limits. The camp is ideal for those looking to intensify their fitness routine in the scenic harbour backdrop. With a range of activities like biking, beach walks, and hikes, it’s not just about working out; it’s about experiencing the beauty of St Tropez while staying active. Whether you’re a seasoned fitness buff or someone looking to kickstart their fitness journey, I have to say this is a great fitness holiday for an all round option.

Personal Take: For a fitness holiday that ticks all the boxes this is by far my favourite. It’s an all rounder and is more about physical wellbeing than the more ambigious versions. I love the location, the weather is almost as good as it’s going to get for European visitors and you’re a short hop from so many other great towns and cities. The camp covers HIIT, Crossfit, TRX workouts and more. They don’t just have this camp in St Tropez, but you can find them in Marrakech, Portugal, Ibiza and the UK.

One more thing – it’s not badly priced too when you consider what you’re getting. Training, accommodation and you might rub shoulders with some Made in Chelsea stars.

Address: Not publicly listed Instagram: @no1_bootcamp Price Range? £1500-3500 (7 Days) Best For : People who want their holidays to include DOMs (us) and get a sweat on….all while soaking up the sun. Not For: Those who dread being out of breath or think St Tropez is best for Aperol Spritz only.

What to expect on a Fitness Retreat

A fitness retreat is a blend of rejuvenation and activity. Typically, you can anticipate a structured daily schedule that includes a mix of workouts, relaxation sessions, and nutritious meals. Activities might range from yoga and meditation to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and nature hikes. Beyond physical activities, many retreats also focus on mental well-being, offering workshops on mindfulness, stress reduction, and personal growth. And let’s not forget the delicious, often organic and locally-sourced meals that fuel your body throughout the day!

How to make the most of your fitness holiday

To truly maximize your fitness holiday, preparation is key. Before you go, set clear goals for what you want to achieve, whether it’s mastering a yoga pose, improving your stamina, or simply unwinding. Pack accordingly, ensuring you have the right gear for all activities. Once there, fully immerse yourself in the experience. Attend all sessions, engage with instructors, and be open to trying new activities. Remember to stay hydrated, get ample rest, and listen to your body. Lastly, take the opportunity to disconnect from digital distractions and truly be present in the moment.

One thing I would add, is that this is still a holiday. If you don’t want to do anything at any time, or anything you have to do is making you stressed, sack it off if the reward is less than the worry.

Where to book fitness holidays?

There are three ways to go about this.

  • Some influencers host their own events – you simply pay the fee and jump on.
  • Specialist retreat hotels – Get your flights and head to the location
  • Do It Yourself – Maybe a fitness holiday is simply a trip to the Lakes in the UK and hiking 10 miles each day. For others it could be visiting the best bodybuilding gyms in the US and going state by state. Or perhaps you’re just going to head to Australia and learn to surf.

If you DIY your fitness holiday, then it will take a little more research but will likely save you money and give you more flexibility. You can jump on Skyscanner, Hostelworld, AirBnB and more to piece it all together. If you’re after an organised trip or an established fitness retreat, then a website like workoutaway.com or wellbeingescapes will be a good starting point.

Oh, and before you go – don’t forget to pack your travel fitness essentials. What are they? Get the packing list here: The Best Gym Accessories To Have

Your Fitness Retreat Could Be Here

Fitness Passport: The Ultimate Gym Pass

fitness passport

Fitness Passport is an Australian-based company that provides members with access to a network of gyms, swimming pools, and other fitness facilities across Australia. The company is designed to make it easier for people to stay fit and healthy by providing access to a wide range of facilities at an affordable price. In this review, we will take a closer look at Fitness Passport and evaluate its benefits and drawbacks.

Perks of Fitness Passport

Firstly, one of the major advantages of Fitness Passport is its affordability. Members pay a monthly fee that grants them access to a range of facilities across Australia. Compared to the cost of a single gym membership, this represents excellent value for money. Fitness Passport also offers a range of discounts and special deals, such as reduced entry fees for certain activities and events.

fitness passport

Another key benefit of Fitness Passport is the variety of facilities available to members. From gyms and swimming pools to group fitness classes and sports clubs, there is something to suit every fitness level and interest. Members can choose from a range of activities and facilities, allowing them to mix up their workouts and avoid boredom.

Fitness Passort’s Accessiblity

In terms of accessibility, Fitness Passport is also very convenient. Members can access facilities in locations across Australia, making it easy to fit a workout into their schedule no matter where they are. There are also no long-term contracts or commitments required, so members have the flexibility to cancel or suspend their membership at any time.

Cons of Fitness Passport

However, there are also some drawbacks to consider when it comes to Fitness Passport. One issue is that some facilities may not be available at all times, particularly during peak periods. This can be frustrating for members who want to use a particular facility but find it busy or unavailable. Another potential drawback is that some facilities may not be as well-equipped or maintained as others, which can impact the quality of the workout experience.

fitness passport

Overall, Fitness Passport is a great option for those looking for an affordable and flexible way to stay fit and healthy. With a range of facilities and activities available across Australia, members can mix up their workouts and avoid boredom. While there may be some limitations and drawbacks to consider, overall Fitness Passport offers excellent value for money and convenience.

We’ve just identified that if we travel to Chile on our AU passports then we need to pay a visa fee of $187AUD. We’ve already done the application but haven’t yet paid the fee as we found out that if we travel on our EU passports then there is a visa free entry granted for up to 90 days.

My questions are this:

*Do we need to contact the airlines (both for flights departing and returning AU and flights internally in STH America) to update our passport information for the tickets OR is it simply ok to show them the EU passports at the desk for them to check we are approved to enter the country?

*If we show the EU passports at the check in at Sydney (and for return flight from Santiago) can we still use our AU passport to leave Sydney and re-enter Australia at immigration?

*I understand we will need to ensure we use the EU passports when entering and leaving chile

*What happens to our visa application if we don’t pay? Does it just lapse and expire?

Is there anything else we need to know for this or other tips?

Many thanks!

Just show your EU passport at check in.

Yes you still use AUS passport to exit and enter AUS.

No idea about the visa application, maybe email them to cancel it.

People use multiple passports when travelling all the time. It's not a big deal.

Yea use your Aus passports to exit and enter Australia.

You don't need to contact anyone.

Your visa application will expire. Don't worry.

The New Rolling Duffle From Away Is Perfect For All Your Summer Trips

Just in time for summer travel, luggage brand Away has just this week launched its all-new Outdoor Rolling Duffle 85L . It’s a spacious checked bag sized right for transporting gear and other essentials. It’s the latest addition to Away’s outdoor collection , which includes a popular convertible backpack, a medium-sized duffle and more.

Popular luggage brand Away is expanding its outdoor collection with a checked-size rolling duffle.

Combining features of Away’s best-selling wheeled suitcases and travel bags, the Outdoor Rolling Duffle 85L is crafted from abrasion-resistant polyester with a polycarbonate back shell for extra support. It has quiet, easy-roll wheels, four grab handles (one on each side) and interior pockets for better organization. Read on to learn more about the latest launch and our favorite pieces from the outdoor collection.

Shop Our Picks From The Outdoor Collection

A sleek, durable and spacious top choice, the outdoor rolling duffle 85l.

Designed for long-haul trips that require one to two weeks' worth of gear and belongings, the Outdoor Rolling Duffle is a durable bag that can handle the toughest excursions. Similar to the brand’s suitcases, there’s an interior compression system, exterior front pocket and sturdy zippers that can withstand frequent use. It’s also available in three neutral colors: Jet Black, Forest Green and Navy Blue.

A Two-In-One Bag For Ultimate Versatility

The outdoor convertible backpack 25l.

Ideal for shorter trips that only require the essentials, this convertible backpack can fit a change of clothes, book, headphones, snack and water bottle. There’s also a separate laptop compartment (it can fit devices up to 13 inches), a hidden cell phone pocket and exterior compression straps. The convertible design allows you to use this bag as both a backpack and a duffle, and it comes in a larger size should you need extra space for long-haul trips.

A Durable Option For Day Trips

The outdoor tote 45l.

This sturdy tote is the perfect companion whether you’re headed to the beach or running errands. It’s made from weather- and abrasion-resistant polyester and has comfortable, long handles that won’t dig into your shoulders. Several interior pockets organize smaller belongings, and a trolley strap secures this bag to any Away suitcase.

A Lightweight Bag For Quick Journeys

The outdoor duffle 40l.

If you’re looking for a compact duffle for weekend getaways and road trips, consider the Outdoor Duffle 40L. It’s made from the same lightweight yet durable polyester as the rest of the collection and has a detachable strap for added convenience. It packs flat to save space when not in use, and the thoughtful interior pockets make packing as seamless as possible. (It’s also available in two additional sizes.)

A Small Organizer For Personal Items

The outdoor pouch.

For better organization, use The Outdoor Pouch to stash essentials like sunscreen, bug spray, hand sanitizer and more. The side handle and clip allow you to attach this pouch to any bag in the outdoor collection, and the sturdy top zipper keeps everything contained. Choose from four colors and three sizes.

Planet Fitness offers free summer workout pass for teens, high school students

fitness passport travel

Planet Fitness is once again launching its High School Summer Pass program that promotes teens to work out this summer for free. This is the fourth year for the initiative.

Starting Saturday, June 1 teenagers between the ages of 14 to 19 can sign up for the free program at all gyms across the United States and Canada. The High School Summer Pass is not available in Puerto Rico. For teens under the age of 18, their parent must sign a waiver in order for them to participate in the program. This promotion will be available until Saturday, August 31, the fitness club said.

"The High School Summer Pass program offers a solution for teens to stay active during the summer when school is out and important academic and extracurricular programs such as sports, gym class and after-school activities are in recess," Senior Director of Public Relations at Planet Fitness, Becky Zirlen, told USA TODAY.

"All High School Summer Pass participants have access to free fitness training from in-club certified trainers, free workouts designed specifically for high schoolers in the free Planet Fitness app as well as workout plans," Zirlen said.

Here’s what you need to know about the High School Summer Pass program.

Planet Fitness: To raise new basic membership fee 50% this summer

How can teens sign up for the High School Summer Pass program?

Teens can sign up online on the High School Summer Pass '24 link now. Sign up opened on Monday May 13. Participants can also sign up at their local Planet Fitness location.

Teens under the age of 18 will need to bring their parents along with them to sign up for the High School Summer Program at the fitness club or have their signature on the electronic waiver. After the waiver is signed, teens are able to work out independently.

"If a parent would like to work out with their teen, they would need to sign up for a Planet Fitness membership as the free program is only for teens ages 14 to 19," Zirlen said.

Although you must show that you are a high school student, you do not have to necessarily use your school email. For email addresses ending in “.edu” it can block online sign ups to outside organizations. Planet Fitness recommends all interested participants to sign up using a non “.edu” email.

Do I need to get the Planet Fitness App?

Using the same email you used to sign up for the High School Summer Pass, you will be able to access your account in the app. You’ll have to create an account with the same email and on June 1 your pass will automatically link to the account. A verification code will be sent to that email as well.

Staying somewhere else for the summer? Planet Fitness has got you covered

You can change the Planet Fitness you wish to work out at by re-registering at the High School Summer Pass '24 link and choosing the correct location you’d like to work out at. You must use the same email address and information you already put in to do so.

Will fitness classes be offered as well?

All participants will have access to the free fitness classes offered through the Planet Fitness PE@PF program.

How To Get Your Own US Passport & Start Your Adventure

Y our U. S. passport is a travel essential for any age traveler because a U.S. citizen’s birth certificate does not suffice to cross borders. However, in the past few years, the processing of U.S. passport applications, renewals and services has slowed considerably.

The U.S. Dept. of State announced in March 2023 that routine processing  of a passport application now takes 10-13 weeks , and  expedited processing  (for an additional $60) takes 7-9 weeks.

So, it’s time to get started with your application. A passport is a great holiday present and will become a great souvenir of your family travels, too.

How to Apply for a U.S. Passport

Don’t wait to acquire or renew your U.S. passport. Whether your family has planned an exotic getaway, or has a new baby on board, whether it’s about to expire or just needs more pages; do it now.

Believe us, you can get one more easily if you plan ahead, or more expensively if you’re running late. It used to be that if you only had a minimum of 24 hours’ lead time, it could still happen before your trip. Those days may be gone forever.

With that in mind, here are some of our tips and resources from the U.S. Passports and International Travel office to make the whole process easier for you.

Who Needs Documentation to Cross Which Borders

All U.S. citizens traveling by air and land (with a few tiny exceptions) anywhere, including the nearby countries in the Caribbean, Mexico, and even Canada need passports. Note that an online eligibility tool is now available, so be sure to fill it in and determine if your requirements will differ from those below. Don’t forget to check out pandemic-related travel restrictions as well.

  • All US Citizens 16-years of age and older must present a valid passport to travel outside of the country to Canada, even by car or boat.
  • Exceptions include kids age 15 and under who, thanks to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative , can present an original or copy of their birth certificate or other proof of citizenship to travel by land or sea to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and 17 Caribbean nations.
  • Teens between the ages of 16 and 18 , when traveling with an organized group, can follow the same procedures as younger children per the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. If not with a group, they, as all adults, will need their own passports.
  • All new US passports must be Biometric Electronic passports
  • Plan ahead for any government-issued documentation because waits can be long. The Department of State received more than 19 million passport applications in Fiscal Year 2018, increasing the competition for quick service.

Never Plan to Fly Internationally? Get a US Passport Card

To meet demand, the US developed the U.S. Passport Card . This wallet-sized RealID document is only good for land and sea cross-border travel between the U. S. and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

It is not valid for international travel by air, but it only costs $65 for applicants age 16 and older whether or not they already have a passport book . It can be applied for online if you already have a passport or expired passport card to send in by mail. Otherwise, you will need to submit one color photo and your forms to an agent in person; visit U S. Department of State for applications and information.

Ordering U.S. Passports By Mail

Potential applicants renewing by mail must meet certain qualifications (see website) and provide their expired passports. Xerox everything, then bring it back to your authorized district mail center, or send it directly to the nearest Passport Center.(Several are noted on the website Passport Info .)

Note that the period September to December is typically the least busy application period. In fact, September is traditionally “Passport Month” when U.S. agencies stay open Saturdays and provide extra services to encourage more Americans to apply for or renew passports.

Step by Step Directions on Applying for a Passport

If you have a few months’ lead time, head to your local post office or library or one of the more than 8,000 Passport Centers noted on the national passport website to pick up an application, or download one from the site.

What You’ll Need for a U. S. Passport

  • 13 Week’s Lead Time (if the waits decrease, we suggest you apply 10 weeks ahead, just in case)
  • Application (download and fill out before appointment)
  • Proof of Citizenship (previous passport, birth certificate)
  • One Photo (professional quality)
  • Proof of ID (previous passport, driver’s license)

Taking Your Passport Photos Successfully

Did you know that , and several hundred thousand applications are rejected each year due to poor photos?. Passport photos will no longer be accepted if the applicant is wearing eyeglasses and, like this cute photo above, must be in color. The Department of State has gotten very strict about photo quality and readability.

The U.S. Passport Office has a page of rules about what makes a good passport photo . Fortunately, there’s a fun app called Passport Photo Creator that makes it easier. Check out the parameters you need to line up a passport-worthy photo on your smartphone.

Of course, it’s helpful to have a partner in the picture-taking, and maybe two if you are photographing a baby. When complete (the app will “verify” a good quality image), email it to a local Walgreens for printing. If you’re unsure about where that is, you can bring a flash drive memory stick with the images to a printer and have it done.

Fees are High, and will go higher!

Notes that passport fees have skyrocketed with the inclusion of Security and Execution Charges, as well as with the new requirement for Biometric passports. Prepare to pay $165 (first time passport, valid 10 years), $135 (children under 16 years, valid 5 years only), or $130 (renewal, valid 10 years).

The only good news is that some Caribbean and Mexican resorts offer summer family travel specials in which they reimburse any family member who had to purchase a passport to get there!

Who Must Apply In Person, In Real Life, for a U.S. Passport

If you are a First Time applicant of any age, you will need to see a Passport Center officer in person with proof of U.S. citizenship and identity; Parents can provide these papers for accompanying children but must have their own photo IDs.

Anyone needing to renew an expired passport that was issued when the passport holder was less than 16-years of age must also apply in person. There are now 8,000 U.S. passport acceptance facilities nationwide. Most of the local Passport Centers accept applicants by appointment only.

Getting U.S. Children’s Passports

Remember that every citizen, no matter the age, must now carry her own passport. Strict guidelines for the issuance of passports to minors under the age of 16-years require the presence of both parents , with proof of parentage.

If there’s only one parent making an appearance, they must have a notarized statement of consent from the second parent (or divorce papers, death certificates, lawyer’s letters, etc. which can be declared on the special form DS-5525 .)

Same sex couples must follow the same rules. “In light of the Supreme Court’s ruling on same sex marriage,” comments a State Department official, “regarding the two parent consent requirement for passport issuance, the basic premise of two-parent consent —- that all legal parents/guardians of a child, as determined by state law, must consent to passport issuance -— remains the same.”

Additionally, minors ages 18 and under are recommended to have at least one guardian in attendance, but these rules are complicated, so be sure to check the national passport website before arriving at their office.

Note: We recommend that any parent who has a different surname than their child also carry a photocopy of the child’s birth certificate while traveling, providing legal evidence of “guardianship” in case of need.

If custody issues are a concern, parents may also request that their children’s names be entered in the U.S. passport name-check system. The Children’s Passport Issuance Alert Program provides notification to parents of passport applications made on behalf of minor children, and denial of passport issuance if appropriate court orders are on file with the CPIAP. The Office of International Parental Child Abduction will provide more information.

Rush Hour – When You Need a U.S. Passport Yesterday

If you’re in a desperate rush, bring your travel tickets (departure must be dated within two weeks of passport application), necessary documents and cash to your regional passport center, wait on line to fill out the application, sign it, pay an additional $60 Expedite Fee, and return in person or have the it delivered to you as soon as possible by overnight mail for an added fee.

If you don’t want to manage this, help is available. For a fee that may be a few hundred dollars (on top of the regular Passport Agency fees), expediters like It’s Easy Passport can advise you of the required paperwork and do the legwork for you, ensuring you peace of mind.

Passport and visa expediters get you the forms, take your stuff, wait and deliver your documents, often within 24-48 hours. Their services are most beneficial for:

  • Last-minute travel planners.
  • Those who need to renew it due to expire within 6 months (not acceptable in many countries.)
  • Anyone requiring international visas with no easy access to a consulate or embassy.

The helpful Fastport Passport, a family run operation based in Brooklyn, is one we’ve worked with. Other national expediters include Passport Plus Visas and A. Briggs Passport Plus.
