13 Game of Thrones-Themed Tours You Can Take Around the World

By rebecca pahle | apr 3, 2019.

Helen Sloan, HBO

If you lived in the world of Game of Thrones , chances are you'd be killed by either a dragon or a White Walker ... or maybe just by a plain old beheading. Luckily for all of you Thrones fans who are fond of being not-dead, plenty of travel companies offer guided tours that will let you feel like you’re inside the world of the HBO juggernaut, minus all the danger that the characters face.

Below are 13 great guided tours that you can take of Game of Thrones filming locations around the world. Note: You'll want to book before the final season premieres on April 14 to get ahead of the rush.

1. Brendan’s Road to Winterfell // Northern Ireland

Ballintoy Harbor in Northern Ireland served as a filming location for several Iron Island scenes.

Brendan Vacations offers a customizable tour through key Game of Thrones locations in Northern Ireland. The seven-day tour is on the pricier side—$4200 per person—but it’s worth it if you want to really geek out. In addition to sites of general historical interest, like museums and cathedrals, you’ll get to visit multiple Thrones filming locations, like the 18th-century mansion Castle Ward, the grounds of which were used extensively for Winterfell location shooting. The Stark kids frolicked there (relatively) happy and free of care early in season 1 ; later, Robb Stark’s army camped there. The tour will also take you to Ballintoy Harbor, which served as the filming location for several of the Iron Island scenes. It was at Ballintoy that Theon Greyjoy returned to the home he’d been taken from as a hostage by the Starks and re-met his sister Yara. (It was all downhill from there for poor Theon, but we hope your vacation will end on a brighter note.)

Book tickets on Brendan Vacations from $4200.

2. Game of Thrones Walking Tour of Dubrovnik // Croatia

Blackwater Bay’s real-life counterpart outside of Old Town Dubrovnik

Put on your comfy shoes for this three-hour walking tour of Dubrovnik, Croatia, the filming location for many of Game of Thrones ’s King’s Landing scenes. You can climb the city walls near Lovrijenac Fortress and look out at the sea—if the view looks familiar, that’s because it served as the location for Westeros’s Blackwater Bay, the site of season 2's unforgettable Battle of the Blackwater.

An upgrade to the tour will also get you a visit to the Trsteno Arboretum, which is often used as the filming location for King’s Landing's palace gardens. (Visit and let the spirit of Olenna Tyrell flow through you.)

Book tickets on Viator from $69.

3. Belfast Winterfell Trek // Northern Ireland

Castle Ward in Northern Ireland was used as a filming location for Winterfell.

On this daylong tour of Castle Ward (a.k.a. Winterfell) in Northern Ireland, you can see where the late King in the North was born, was crowned, and was murdered. A further stop at Tollymore Forest Park in Newcastle lets you see where the Starks first found their direwolf pups and where the Night’s Watch first found the White Walkers. Guides who worked as extras on Game of Thrones are on hand to break down the visual effects that transformed the real-life environs of Northern Ireland into Westeros. Plus, the tour is designed to be immersive, so Stark banners, cloaks, and swords are available for guests to use throughout the day.

Book tickets on TripAdvisor from $66.

4. Game of Thrones Filming Locations Tour From Reykjavik // Iceland

Thingvellir National Park

Watch out for White Walkers on this eight-hour-long tour of Game of Thrones landmarks around Reykjavik , Iceland. Sites include Thingvellir National Park, which stands in for some of the show’s North-of-the-Wall content. (Don’t worry—there are no zombie bears.) You'll get to see Almannagjá Gorge in Thingvellir, which served as the shooting location for the Eyrie’s Bloody Gate—the site of Arya Stark’s season 4 giggle fit upon finding out yet another one of her relatives had died. Another stop on the itinerary is Thjorsárdalur Valley, site of the Wildling massacre of Olly’s village in season 4. (Olly, you’ll remember, gets his revenge .)

Book tickets on Viator from $110.

5. Seville and Osuna Guided Game of Thrones Tour // Spain

The Alcazar of Seville served as the location for Prince Doran Martell’s castle and its surrounding gardens.

Among avid fans, Game of Thrones ’s Dorne plotline was … well, let’s just say, not the most popular. But that doesn’t make Seville, Spain, where many of the Dorne scenes were shot, any less beautiful. The key site of this tour is the Alcázar of Seville, the palace that served as the shooting location for Prince Doran Martell’s castle and its surrounding gardens. On the bloodier side of things, this tour also includes an optional trip by train to the Spanish town of Osuna, where the Meereen fighting pit scenes were filmed.

6. The Narrow Sea Boat Voyage // Northern Ireland

Audley’s Castle—located on the grounds of Castle Ward—was used as the basis for one of The Twins, where the Red Wedding took place. (The second tower was CGI.)

Have a little Greyjoy blood in you? Then you may lean towards Winterfell Tours’ Narrow Sea Boat Voyage. Lasting approximately 90 minutes, the private boat tour takes you past the shores of Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough. You'll sail past Audley's Castle—which served as one of The Twins—located along the shore on the grounds of Castle Ward. You’ll also get a view of the filming locations for House Bolton’s Dreadfort Castle, Hoster Tully’s Viking-inspired funeral pyre, and more.

Book tickets with Winterfell Tours from $522 for a private tour of up to 10 people.

7. Game of Thrones Tour in Split // Croatia

You’ll recognize Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia from Game of Thrones Meereen scenes.

If you need more Meereen content, take a 3.5-hour guided tour of Split, Croatia, where the mountain fortress of Klis was a filming location for the city conquered by Daenerys. After the fortress, the next stop on the walking tour is Diocletian’s Palace, built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century, which has also been used as a Meereen shooting location. It’s also the site of Daenerys’s throne room as well as where she keeps her dragons locked up so they can't eat anybody they shouldn’t.

Book tickets on Viator from $78.

8. Game of Thrones Filming Locations Tour // Northern Ireland

The Dark Hedges stood in for King’s Road in Game of Thrones.

Brienne of Tarth fans, step up. The Game of Thrones Filming Locations Tour from Irish Tour Tickets will take you to Larrybane Quarry, where viewers were first introduced to the fan-favorite knight in season 2. Other stops on this daylong trip include the Cushenden Caves, where Melisandre gave birth to the shadow baby that killed Renly; Dunlunce Castle, used as House Greyjoy; and the picturesque Dark Hedges , which stand in for the Kingsroad. Another stop is Carnlough Harbor, which stood in for Braavos in season 6—it’s where Arya Stark just narrowly avoided getting stabbed to death by the Waif.

Book tickets on Expedia from $51.

9. Game of Thrones Filming Locations Tour // Malta

Mdina, Malta is where the final goodbye between Ned and Catelyn Stark was filmed.

Along with Dubrovnik, Croatia, the island of Malta was a filming location for many of the King’s Landing scenes in Game of Thrones . Stops on this tour include the city of Mdina, site of Ned and Catelyn’s final farewell, along with the season 1 fight between Jaime Lannister and Ned Stark that ended in the latter’s capture. You’ll see Malta’s Mtahleb Cliffs, which stood in for the Shadow Cliffs, the location of Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre and the birth of Daenerys's dragons . And you’ll see St. Dominic’s Convent in Rabat, Malta, which served as one of the locations for the Red Keep, the castle that contains the Iron Throne.

Book tickets on Viator from $67.

10. Archery Movie Set Experience // Northern Ireland

game thrones tour

Ah, season 1, episode 1 … when the Stark children were practicing their archery instead of living under the constant threat of murder. (OK, there was still a little threat of murder.) At Castle Ward, Winterfell Tours offers the Archery Set Movie Experience , where Game of Thrones fans can practice their archery in the "Winterfell" courtyard. Both visitors and instructors—some of whom trained members of the cast—get costumes to wear.

A bundle deal gets you the Winterfell Cycle Tour (where you’ll see, among other places, the tower from which Jaime Lannister pushed Bran) and a meet and greet with the Northern Inuit dogs who played direwolves Summer and Grey Wind.

Book tickets with Winterfell Tours from $39.

11. Game of Thrones Tour in Girona // Spain

Sant Pere de Galligants, a monastery in Girona, Spain, stood in for Oldtown’s Citadel.

Girona, Spain, is yet another city that’s served as an ersatz King’s Landing over Game of Thrones ’s run. Explore Catalunya’s tour takes you through the medieval town, home to the monastery Sant Pere de Galligants, the real-life stand-in for Oldtown’s Citadel. The tour also features the Plaza del Jurats, site of a memorable season 6 scene where Arya watched a theatrical version of her family’s troubles. Many of season 6's Braavos market and training scenes (when Arya was learning to be a master assassin) were filmed here, as were scenes surrounding King’s Landing’s Sept of Baelor—also known as the Girona Cathedral.

Book tickets on Viator from $113.

12. GoT to Escape // Northern Ireland

game thrones tour

Say you’re in Northern Ireland and you’ve already seen all the Game of Thrones filming locations. Or maybe you’re just looking for something a little different. GoT to Escape in Belfast boasts three Game of Thrones -inspired escape rooms and one mystery room. Your mission? Save King’s Landing. Each room takes an hour to complete and is designed for between two and six players. (The website notes that you don’t actually need any special knowledge of Game of Thrones to participate, so feel free to drag your non-fan friends and family members along.)

Book tickets on GoT to Escape from $53.

13. Westeros and Beyond // Iceland, Ireland, Spain, and Croatia

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Or maybe you just want to do everything . STA Travel offers multi-stop trips geared toward younger travelers and students (though they sell flights to people of all ages, their website notes that “some of our airfare is available just to full-time students, [t]eachers at accredited schools, and youth travelers under the age of 26”). If the price is right, you can start in New York City and travel across the world to several of the key cities where Game of Thrones is filmed—Reykjavik, Dublin, Barcelona, and Dubrovnik. Once there, STA provides day tours like the ones mentioned above.

The thought of the  Game of Thrones finale is bringing bittersweet feelings to many fans, not least because it means an end to a brilliant piece of weekly escapism. While HBO is planning plenty of spin-offs to replace it, the legacy is being kept alive by fans and travellers around the world. We've rounded up some Game of Thrones tours and attractions so you don't need to say goodbye to Westeros just yet.

Northern Ireland

The spiritual home of the TV show, most of the indoor scenes were filmed here. The stunning landscape provided the locations for Winterfell, Castle Black, Pyke Island and the Kingsroad, to name just a few. It is fitting that TEC Belfast is hosting the touring Game of Thrones exhibition  all the way through to September.

Visitors can get up close and personal with the costumes, numerous props, and step completely into the atmospheric sets, including Winterfell Crypt and the Dragon Skull Pit; both of these key GoT scenes will be exclusive to the Belfast run of the exhibition. A few months later the tour packs up and moves on to its next (undisclosed) location. However the show's connection with Northern Ireland will remain in the form of a permanent Game of Thrones Studio Tour located at Linen Mill Studios that opens in early 2020.

Split is full of recognisable locations but a new Game of Thrones museum has just opened with more than 100 exhibits showcasing the magic of the show. There are plenty of genuine set items, sumptuous costumes, and excellent photo opportunities, including some with statues of the characters.

A model of Drogon the dragon bursting through a wall with his jaws open at the Game of Thrones' museum in Split

Walk the streets of Dubrovnik and you’ll be bombarded with offers of Game of Thrones themed tours, including people who worked on the show that are happy to share anecdotes from their time on set. If you prefer to go it alone, our guide to Croatia’s Game of Thrones locations will help you on your way.

For those sick of the political machinations of the Seven Kingdoms, Iceland is the home of the Free Folk, and the icy landscape is the perfect backdrop to any fantasy epic. This full-day Game of Thrones tour will bring you to some of the spectacular waterfalls featured in the series, a reconstruction of a Viking farm that was the setting for an attack by the Wildlings, and even to meet some of the horses used in the filming. For a more immersive experience, Guide to Iceland also run six- and eight-day full vacation packages.

Long before Game of Thrones , the Atlas Film Studios were hosting Hollywood epics and the remnants of their sets have been left in the world’s largest filming studio, gathering dust in the expanse of the desert. As well as Astapor’s Square where Daenerys thrillingly freed the Unsullied, you’ll spot sets from Gladiator , Jewel of the Nile and The Mummy .

Spain took an increasingly starring role in later seasons, providing the homelands for the Martells and Tyrells, as well as the windswept Dragonstone. Girona and Seville also lent their picturesque surroundings to King’s Landing, Braavos and the Water Gardens of Dorne. Viator  operates tours in these locations, including a day trip from Barcelona for fans.

With up to five Game of Thrones-related prequels in the works, it’s unlikely Westerosi mania will cease anytime soon. In the unlikely event that happens, the stunning locations will be there forever to enjoy for their own merits or through the lens of your favourite TV show. Our guide to six of the most beautiful Game of Thrones locations will get you started.

The tour features sets including House Stark's Great Hall at Winterfell, Daenerys Targaryen's Dragonstone throne, King's Landing and The Wall, as well as props, weaponry, costumes, visual effects and "immersive interactives."

Full description

First, you’ll take in Carnlough , the setting for the city of Braavos , where Arya Stark fought the Waif . Then, make your way to Cushendun Caves , where Melisandre brought the Shadow Assassin to life.

Cushendun Caves / The Stormlands

This bus tour also makes a stop at Dunluce Castle . A 17th-century structure built on a cliff edge, it looks as though it came straight from George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire . So much so that it was used for the exterior shots of the House of Greyjoy ! This is a great spot to dress up in some Game of Thrones inspired costumes and take some memorable holiday snaps! Of course, no Game of Thrones tour would be complete without a visit to the Dark Hedges . The canopy of interlocking trees along this road made it the perfect location for the King’s Road . It has since become an iconic and instantly recognizable backdrop.

Giant's Causeway

Another great feature of this tour is a visit to Giant’s Causeway . A UNESCO World Heritage Site , this area is famous for its 40,000 basalt pillars and is connected to much of the local history and legends.

And, if all of that wasn’t enough, this tour also takes a trip through the picturesque seaside town, Ballycastle . While not featured in GOT , it still has an important connection to the show. This is the home town of actors Conleth Hill (Lord Varys) and Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark) .

The Game of Thrones Tour with Giant's Causeway allows you to explore and learn about the landscapes that bring Westeros to life on-screen. It is the perfect adventure for any GOT fan who wants to follow in the footsteps of the Starks, Lannisters, and Greyjoys!

Carnlough Harbour

Carnlough, a picturesque coastal village nestled along the Antrim Coast of Northern Ireland, served as the stunning backdrop for the city of Braavos in Game of Thrones. Its idyllic charm and unique features made Carnlough the perfect choice to bring the mystical city to life.

Braavos, one of the significant locations in the Game of Thrones universe, is a city known for its vibrant culture, intricate canal system, and iconic landmarks. Carnlough effortlessly embodied these qualities, transforming into the enchanting city of Braavos with its own distinct character.

The village’s picturesque harbor, lined with colorful houses and small fishing boats, served as the central point of Braavos, creating a visual spectacle that captivated viewers. Its narrow streets and quaint buildings were adorned with intricate designs and architectural details, reminiscent of the rich tapestry of the Game of Thrones world.

Visitors to Carnlough can immerse themselves in the essence of Braavos by exploring the village’s charming streets and harbor. They can stroll along the water’s edge, imagining themselves as characters from the show, and take in the awe-inspiring coastal scenery that enchanted both viewers and filmmakers alike.

The transformation of Carnlough into Braavos highlights the incredible fusion of fantasy and reality that Game of Thrones achieved through its use of Northern Ireland’s diverse landscapes. Carnlough’s portrayal of Braavos will forever be etched in the hearts of fans, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking a touch of magic from the world of Westeros.

3. Cushendun Caves / The Stormlands

Game of Thrones - Cushendun Caves ~ A Cove in the Stormlands (02)

The Cushendun Caves  helped to create some of the eerie settings near Storm’s End . These 400-million-year-old caves provided the perfect rocky, coastal landscape to represent the Baratheon  homeland.

In the GOT TV series , the Cushendun Caves feature in one of the show’s most famous and mystical scenes. Here, Melisandre gives birth to the Shadow Assassin , much to the amazement of Davos Seaworth . This smokey spectre travels through the air to find Renly Baratheon , killing him in his tent. For viewers, this was the first time they saw how powerful Melisandre could really be. It also showed how far Stannis Baratheon would truly go to sit on the Iron Throne .

But the Cushendun Caves are more than just the backdrop for Storm’s End. They are a thing of natural beauty and undeniable proof of the picturesque qualities of the Northern Irish coastline. When visiting the cave featured in the show, make sure to take the time to soak up the verdant green landscape, and breath in some fresh Irish Sea air.

4. Ballycastle

Ballycastle

While Ballycastle doesn’t feature in the Game of Thrones TV series , it does play an important role. This small seaside town is the home of actors Conleth Hill (Lord Varys) and Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark) .

This is a quintessential coastal town, where you can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, and fill your lungs with salty, Irish Sea air. It is the perfect place to indulge in a refreshing coastal walk, some fresh seafood, and maybe even a quiet beer or two!

Looking out on a clear day, you can make out Scotland’s Mull of Kintyre far off in the distance. A regular ferry service also makes trips to and from nearby Rathlin Island , a wildlife sanctuary. It makes for a fun day-trip. And it gives you the opportunity to spot some of the colourfully-beaked puffins that the island is known for.

Other attractions in the area include Ballycastle Beach, the 16th century Kilbane Castle , and Glentaisie , the most northerly of the Nine Glens of Antrim . For the avid Game of Thrones fans, there is nearby Ballintoy Harbour , the filming location for the island Pyke . Also not too far away is the UNESCO World Heritage Site Giant’s Causeway . A must-see for anyone visiting the area.

5. Giant's Causeway

Giant's Causeway

The Giant’s Causeway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , and one of Northern Ireland’s most popular historical landmarks. It draws in hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

Situated on the County Antrim coast, Giant’s Causeway is the product of two natural forces coming together. It formed when molten lava cooled down as it met with the cold sea water, around 50 to 60 million years ago. The result was a sprawling bed of around 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, that covers just under 5km of coastline.

Some legends also talk about how Giant’s Causeway came to be. The most popular features the Irish mythical character Fionn mac Cumhaill , who was feuding with a Scottish giant,  Benandonner . Fionn built the causeway between the two islands so that they could fight it out.

However, when he saw how big Benandoner really was, he retreated back to his wife for help. She quickly wrapped Fionn in a blanket and laid him across her lap. When the Scottish giant arrived she told him that this was, in fact, the infant son of Fion mac Cumhaill. Seeing how big the toddler was, Benandonner figured that the father must be enormous. So, he ran away, destroying the causeway as he went.

6. Dunluce Castle / Pyke Castle of House Greyjoy

Dunluce Castle / House Greyjoy

Exterior shots of Dunluce Castle were used in Game of Thrones for Pyke Castle of House Greyjoy on Pyke Island . But that’s not the only exciting thing about this 16th-century structure. It has many other claims to fame and tales from within its walls.

Featuring on the HBO TV series wasn’t the first time that Dunluce Castle was shown to the world. In the early 70s, it also featured on the inner sleeve of the Led Zeppelin album Houses of the Holy . It was also the one-time home of the famous Scottish warrior chieftain  Sorely Boy MacDonnell . It was during Sorely’s reign that the Girona , a vessel from the Spanish Armada , was caught in a storm and wrecked on nearby rocks. The canons were taken from the ship and installed as the castle’s security system.

A local legend also claims that at one time, due to cliff beneath the castle eroding, the castle’s kitchen suddenly plummeted into the sea . The only member of staff left alive was the kitchen boy. He was sitting on a stool in the inside corner of the room when it fell.

7. The Dark Hedges / The Kingsroad

The Dark Hedges / The Kingsroad in Game of Thrones

The Dark Hedges  looked like a place straight out of a fantasy novel long before it became the backdrop of The Kingsroad in Game of Thrones . The interlocking canopy of trees covering the road naturally creates a sense of magic and mystery.

James Stuart originally planted the beech trees lining this road in 1755 . He wanted them to grow and line the entranceway to his home, Gracehill House .

According to local legend, a ghost named the Grey Lady haunts the Dark Hedges. Some say she is the spirit of James Stuart’s daughter , or possibly a housemaid who died mysteriously. Others speculate that the Grey Lady is a spirit from a nearby abandoned graveyard. People say that on Halloween night, her fellow graveyard residents join in on the haunting fun!

While James Stuart originally planted 150 trees, only around 90 are still standing. In 2016, Storm Gertrude fell two trees and damaged a third. The timber from these trees made 10 bespoke doors . Each one features a Game-of-Thrones-inspired design. You can find them throughout Northern Ireland .

Game of Thrones Tours

I visited the 'Game of Thrones' studio 5 years after the series finale. The $37 tour reminded me why I love the show.

  • I recently visited the Game of Thrones Studio Tour in Northern Ireland for $37.
  • It offers an exclusive look at the HBO series , which spent millions of dollars on each episode.
  • Even five years after the series finale, the studio is still a worthwhile experience for fans.

Insider Today

It's been five years since the series finale of HBO's "Game of Thrones," but I'm as big a fan as ever.

When a work trip took me to Northern Ireland , I knew I had to detour to the Game of Thrones Studio Tour. By season eight, the HBO drama was spending $15 million per episode , and like any true fan, I wanted a behind-the-scenes look at where some of that money went — and what made the show so visually incredible.

The tour, located in one of the show's original filming locations , Linen Mill Studios, opened in 2022, and standard tickets cost £29.50, or about $37.

I wanted to see just how relevant the studio is today — especially in the lead-up to the new season of the "House of the Dragon" prequel series in June — and if the widespread passion of the fandom is still alive.

It felt like the studio was hidden in plain sight.

game thrones tour

There's no onsite parking at the studio, so getting there felt like being escorted to some secret location. Luckily, the instructions were clear: Meet at The Boulevard, a large shopping district in Banbridge, Northern Ireland.

From there, a complimentary shuttle took me down a long, formal-looking driveway. It's easy to see how the studio remained low-key during its filming heyday — it's almost as if it's hidden in plain sight.

My excitement overflowed as I stepped off the bus to blasting theme music and a massive Game of Thrones Studio Tour sign. About 10 other visitors immediately began posing for photographs.

After the 10-minute shuttle ride, it took me a good five minutes to reach security and start the experience, but the atmosphere was already infectious. Even the staff seemed genuinely excited to greet me.

The impressive theming immediately drew me in.

game thrones tour

After passing a dragon skull and armored "guard," the tour started with a green-screen photo while we waited for some dramatic doors to swing open.

A tour guide quickly explained the studio rules — mostly, no touching the exhibits (which were used during filming) and absolutely no photos of the pre-tour movie.

I won't spoil too much, but the short film gave me goosebumps. At the end, the screen parted, and we entered the studio from "beyond the wall."

The studio clearly takes immersion seriously.

game thrones tour

On the other side of the screen, we were blasted by fog machines before standing toe-to-toe with the Wildlings. Everything was incredibly immersive.

This was one of my favorite rooms. It had elaborate costumes from the show , including coats laden with bones and oysters. I learned that some weighed up to 15 pounds.

I also caught a glimpse of Wun Wun — or, at least, the costume that 7-foot-1 Ian Whyte wore during filming. It supposedly took the actor three to five hours a day to transform into the giant.

It was fun to walk through the different memorable sets.

game thrones tour

The studio is made up of a trail of set rooms, including Mess Hall in Castle Black, the Crypts of Winterfell, King's Landing, and the Great Hall of Winterfell.

Costumed mannequins stood in each room to mimic the real scenes from the show.

I learned a lot about the making of the show throughout the tour.

game thrones tour

In addition to walking through the sets, I got an insight into the show's creation process.

The 30-foot dragon skull of Balerion the Black Dread took six weeks to make before being shipped to Spain for filming. While standing next to the masterpiece, I could hardly believe that something of its scale could be transported across Europe .

Equally staggering, we learned that the crew went through 52,000 bags of fake snow and 163 tons of propane (for pyrotechnic effects) throughout the series.

Hearing about these intense behind-the-scenes efforts brought the series' magic back to life and made the visit worthwhile for me.

Behind-the-scenes exhibits and interactive experiences made the experience even better.

game thrones tour

Other rooms were dedicated to the show's costume design , music creation, and set design. There was even a sword display room that housed famous props like Arya's Needle.

I'd nearly forgotten about the significance of the show's many props before embarking on the tour. But I almost squealed at Jaime Lannister's golden hand.

There were activities throughout the tour, too, including adding your face to the Hall of Faces and creating your own sigil.

I was entranced up until the very end of the experience.

game thrones tour

The tour finished at the Iron Throne, a dragon flitting behind the rubble on a digital back wall.

It was a fitting endpoint seeing as it was the location where Jon killed Daenerys, controversially culling her brewing tyranny and ending the series.

I don't think the "Game of Thrones" buzz is going to die down anytime soon.

game thrones tour

The studio wasn't packed, but Northern Ireland tends to be a little quieter in February and busier during the Easter holiday and summer. Honestly, I was grateful I missed the heavier crowds.

Overall, the "Game of Thrones" fandom seems to be building momentum rather than slowing down — especially with the second season of "House of the Dragon" looming.

I saw plenty of visitors bringing their children, too, so love for the series seems to be getting passed down to the next generation.

Initially, £29.50 seemed steep to me. But comparably, it's cheap for a studio tour — the Harry Potter Studio Tour in London charges a base price of £53.50.

Plus, I thought it offered great value. It packed so much in and the staff's passion is evident, which makes all the difference for visitors.

Lisa Vanderpump is taking ET inside her latest restaurant!

ET's Brice Sander got a grand tour of the  Vanderpump Rules  star's Lake Tahoe eatery, Wolf by Vanderpump, and the entrepreneur revealed why she's "absolutely ecstatic" about how the restaurant turned out.

"It's really been a challenge to bring this to fruition, but it's turned out absolutely spectacular," she said of the restaurant, which she designed alongside her longtime collaborator, Nick Alain. "... This is a dream come true."

"We just have the chance to create something that we dream up. Who gets that chance?" Lisa added. "When Caesars said, 'We have this space in Lake Tahoe and you can basically dream up something crazy,' we just jumped on it and look at it."

The space is the SUR owner's biggest yet with Caesars at 6,400 sq. feet, and has the amenities to boot. From an enormous bespoke bar to seven-foot ceilings to a cozy library and spinning chandeliers adorned with crystal-covered antlers, the whole venue is  Games of Thrones  meets chalet chic.

"He'll be like, 'Let's have antlers.' I'll be like, 'Let's have crystals. Let's make it like this big.' And then we say, 'Let's make it spin,'" Lisa told ET of how the spinning lighting came to be. "I like movement in a restaurant."

Overall, Lisa said the "experiential" space is "very organic, very natural" and "more masculine" than her other restaurants.

"It's always a big statement," she said. "I don't think we'll ever be accused of being bland. We are maximalist for sure."

That's never move true than with the bar, which features two life-sized wolves breaking free of cages sitting atop the counter.

"It's got so much detail when you look at it," she said. "... When I see it finished, I think, 'How did we do this much?' It's crazy... It's all about detail. It's very personal to me."

That's especially true because of the restaurants name, as Lisa explained, "My grandson, Teddy, his second name was Teddy Wolf, so I thought it's so kinda ingenious. It feels right here... It's so emotional for me."

Wolf by Vanderpump is now open at Harvey's Lake Tahoe.

  • A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the next Game of Thrones spinoff, and HBO's patient and cautious approach bodes very well for it.
  • The upcoming spinoff has big advantages over a Jon Snow sequel, thanks to existing source material to adapt and clear distance from Game of Thrones season 8.

HBO isn't moving forward with the Jon Snow sequel show, and that's a promising sign for its next Game of Thrones spinoff. The network has had various prequels in the works since Game of Thrones ' ending - though only House of the Dragon has made it to screen so far - but Jon Snow's show would have bucked the trend. With Harington set to return, this would have been the first sequel to the main show, directly continuing part of its story.

After almost two years in development, Harington revealed to Screen Rant in April 2024 that the Jon Snow spinoff is no longer in development at HBO . It's a surprising development, given it it would likely have been a big hit, but it came for an unsurprising reason: Harington and his team of writers struggled to find a story for Game of Thrones ' Jon Snow spinoff . While there is some disappointment in the decision, as it means not seeing the actor return, it's not only for the best, but encouraging for the entire franchise.

Game Of Thrones Cast - Where Are They Now?

Jon snow's spinoff cancellation suggests a knight of the seven kingdoms is great, the game of thrones sequel not happening reveals more about hbo's spinoff approach.

Jon Snow's sequel not happening bodes well for other upcoming Game of Thrones spinoffs , because it strongly re-affirms HBO's desire to only have the very best stories on screen. The Snow show would effectively have been a replacement for Game of Thrones season 9 : continuing the main character's arc, building on the main show in a direct way, and potentially even bringing back other popular actors. In terms of ratings, at least, it would be a no-brainer. And yet they're not making it.

House of the Dragon was a great first prequel, and the implication here is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' story will be just as good.

That's a very clear message that HBO is prepared to be patient with its Westeros franchise , and should mean great things for the next spinoff that is confirmed: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight . The show, based on George R.R. Martin's The Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, begins around 80-90 years before Game of Thrones . The story follows Ser Duncan the Tall, aka Dunk, a knight who becomes Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and his squire, Egg, who eventually becomes King Aegon V Targaryen.

Dunk & Egg Explained: What Game Of Thrones' Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Is About

The show received a straight-to-series order, similar to House of the Dragon , rather than having to go to the pilot stage. There is obviously a lot of faith in that project, not only in its ability to draw in viewers, but more so in the quality of its story. House of the Dragon was a great first prequel, and the implication here is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms ' story will be just as good.

That feels even more likely when looking at the history of other, rejected Game of Thrones spinoffs . HBO canceled Bloodmoon after a $30 million pilot had already been filmed; even the Dance of the Dragons went through various failed stages of development before it eventually became House of the Dragon . Combine all of these elements together, and it becomes even more exciting that there is an idea strong enough for this to move forward.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to release on HBO and Max in 2025. Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 and House of the Drago n season 1 currently stream on Max, with HOTD season 2 coming on June 16, 2024.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Has Big Advantages Over A Jon Snow Spinoff

It's easy to see why the hedge knight is happening & jon snow's sequel is not.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight does, in fairness, have things a little easier than making a show about Jon Snow. The biggest of these is quite simple: there are books to adapt. Martin hasn't yet finished A Song of Ice and Fire, never mind thought about what happens to Jon Snow after that , so the sequel was working without any kind of blueprint. While Martin does plan on writing more Dunk & Egg novellas, there is at least a clear starting point and structure, with three books published so far.

It is also, perhaps, easier to make a Game of Thrones prequel than a sequel. That's not just because of Martin's works existing, with plenty of worldbuilding to pull from yet nothing after, but because of the backlash to Game of Thrones season 8 . Trying to make something that continues on from there, but also avoid its mistakes and the parts viewers disliked, is not an easy task. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight can completely stand apart, but a Jon Snow sequel would always be directed connected to it, and the former is a lot easier for the franchise's future.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Will Be Very Different To A Jon Snow Sequel & Other GOT Spinoffs

The hedge knight isn't the same as other westeros stories.

The stories that unfold in George R.R. Martin's The Tales of Dunk and Egg books aren't really comparable to A Song of Ice and Fire , nor the events that are covered in Fire & Blood (the book on which House of the Dragon is based). Those two have different methods in the telling, with the latter being written like an in-universe history book, but the stories are similarly epic: warring families, huge-scale political conflicts, and dragon-sized action. The Dunk and Egg novellas, in contrast, are a lot lighter in tone, showing a different side of both the world and Martin's writing.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight (2025)

Cast Dexter Sol Ansell, Peter Claffey

Streaming Service(s) HBO Max

Franchise(s) Game of Thrones

Main Genre Fantasy

Creator(s) Ira Parker, Martin Parker

That's not to say the books - and thus the show - won't appeal to fans of A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones , as it's still recognizably part of the same broader landscape, but it's a fascinating addition to it. This is Westeros at a more peaceful time, and that allows for showing an alternate viewpoint. Whereas House of the Dragon has a Targaryen civil war and Game of Thrones is when the Targaryen dynasty is over, this can show what the house's rule truly looked like in a "normal" time period for it.

If A Song of Ice and Fire is Martin's The Lord of the Rings, then the Dunk and Egg books are his version of The Hobbit - a breezier, much less grim tale that can have a lighter touch.

It's a different set of politics, explores other parts of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros , and there's some traveling around and interacting with the smallfolk that plays differently to when they're living amid the horrors of war. If A Song of Ice and Fire is Martin's The Lord of the Rings , then the Dunk and Egg books are his version of The Hobbit - a breezier, much less grim tale that can have a lighter touch.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Does Have One Book Problem Of Its Own

Martin's novellas could cause issues for the game of thrones spinoff.

As mentioned, one major hurdle facing a Jon Snow sequel show is that there's no clear story. That's not exactly a problem faced by A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms , but it could instead have the same challenge that Game of Thrones suffered from: running out of source material. Martin has written three novellas so far, with the expectation that they will each become one season of TV, but they don't provide an ending for the characters and story.

Indeed, Martin has spoken of writing as many as a dozen Dunk and Egg novellas before [via Not A Blog ] , but a new one hasn't been published since 2010. With The Winds of Winter taking so long, and then A Dream of Spring and Fire & Blood: Volume II also still planned, then there is a risk of the TV show overtaking the books, like what happened with Game of Thrones .

The good news is that there is a clearer outline of what happens. The eventual fates of Ser Duncan the Tell and King Aegon V Targaryen are known and have appeared in companion books written by Martin, not necessarily in great detail, but there is, perhaps, a clearer roadmap than Game of Thrones had.

This is a story that spans a long time, but isn't quite as complex as the tangled web of A Song of Ice and Fire . It should, in theory, be easier to pull off with or without the books. And either way, there's certainly more to work with than a Jon Snow sequel. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be a different sort of Game of Thrones prequel, but it's also a very exciting one.

Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is a multimedia franchise created by George R.R. Martin. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire is the basis for the award-winning HBO series Game of Thrones, which lasted for eight seasons. After the incredibly divisive final season of Game of Thrones, the series was followed up by the prequel series House of the Dragon, which also received critical acclaim.

2K Launches New NFL Game Today, And It's Probably Not What You Expect

This is not 2K's long-awaited arcade game, but instead a card battler for mobile.

By Eddie Makuch on April 23, 2024 at 11:42AM PDT

2K Sports released a new NFL video game today as part of the company's deal with the NFL that covers non-simulation games. The card battler mobile game NFL 2K Playmakers is out now on iOS and Android as a free game supported by microtransactions and developed by Cat Daddy Games.

NFL 2K Playmakers has players putting together NFL player cards with the aim of making the strongest roster overall, covering offense, defense, and special teams. The game's two main modes are Red Zone Drive and Seasons. In Red Zone Drive, players have to leverage their football know-how to call plays strategically and hope their players execute. In Seasons mode, players build a team and take them through an entire NFL season, culminating in the Super Bowl if they can make it that far.

NFL 2K Playmakers has real player likenesses, as the game was produced in partnership with the NFL Players Association. Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud is the cover athlete.

Starting with the upcoming 2024 NFL season, players can make predictions about real-life matchups to obtain points that they can use for a chance to grab in-game rewards. 2K said more details about this will be announced when the new NFL season begins later this year.

2K is also making an arcade-style NFL game, but it has been delayed indefinitely and there continues to be no word on when it might release. In 2023, Insider Gaming reported that development on the game had restarted at least twice since it started development.

2K's NFL 2K series was once very popular, but the publisher ended the series in 2004. Under its new agreement with the NFL, 2K will make non-simulation NFL games. That's an important distinction because EA Sports remains the exclusive developer of simulation-style NFL games with its Madden NFL series.

The new NFL games from 2K will have the names, numbers, images, and likenesses of more than 2,000 current NFL players .

With 2K getting back into NFL games, the publisher is extending its sports game catalogue. 2K already makes NBA, WWE, and PGA Tour games. The company is also getting back into the tennis game, and will launch TopSpin 2K25 on April 26.
