Ko Chang Travel Guide

The Essential Ko Chang Guide

Ko Chang island , known also as ‘Elephant Island’ named because of its elephant shaped headland, is Thailand’s third largest island after Phuket and Samui. It is located around 300 kilometres east of Bangkok in Trat Province, in the Gulf of Thailand near the Cambodian border.

From jungle covered mountain peaks to sweeping bays, great waterfalls to flourishing coral reefs, beach huts to luxury resorts, Koh Chang has plenty to offer for everyone.Ko Chang is part of the Mu Ko Chang National Park . Despite its increase in development and tourism in the past decade or so, it has retained its remote and rugged character.

With an area covering approximately 212 square kilometres, 70% of Koh Chang is covered in rainforests, mountains and beaches. The highest peak on the island is Khao Salak Phet, rising from the ground at 743 meters, and given its mountainous terrain there is an abundance of waterfalls with the tallest but not always the most accessible being Klong Neung waterfall, which can be found in thesouth-eastern corner of the island.

When is the best time to visit Ko Chang?

Ko Chang has three main seasons, the cool season runs from November to the end of February. This is when the island is at it’s busiest, with guaranteed daily sunshine, stunning blue skies and calm seas. If you don’t mind crowds, this is the ideal time to visit. During this time the average temperature is between 27C and 30C, you may experience the odd refreshing thunderstorm.

The hot season follows the cool season and runs for 3 months, March to April. During these months the temperature is over 33C most days and along with the high humidity it can get uncomfortable.  You’ll find yourself sweating when standing still. The months of April and May are also the usual holiday months for Thais, so the tourist areas of the island can still be busy. Especially during Songkran, Thai New Year, which is from 13 – 15 April.

If you happen to be around for the Songkran celebrations don’t be surprised to find water being thrown at you, this is all part of the ‘Songkran’ celebrations and also a great way to cool down in the scorching heat.  Be sure to keep your camera, phone and passport in a waterproof bag.

The last season is the rainy season, starting towards the end of May, the rains carry on until the end of October. During these months tourism on Koh Chang drops off, as do the prices of accommodation , and while the weather is unpredictable it still can be a great time to visit the island. The island is much quieter, the prices are lower and the rainforests are lush green and full of life.  It’s the ideal time to visit for people who just want to chill out and enjoy some peace and quiet.  even White sands beach, the busiest beach, is calm.

How to Get to Ko Chang and Get Around?

Coming from Bangkok, there are numerous transport options.  There isn’t one which is ‘best’ as that depends on your own budget and preferred style of travel. At the top end of the price range, the quickest but also most expensive option is to fly on Bangkok Airways to Trat.  Whilst for people who prefer to see some local life on the way taking the bus from Ekkamai Bus Station, Bangkok to one of the mainland piers in Laem Ngop is the cheapest means of getting to the island. A one way ticket on an airconditioned bus is around 260 Baht (That’s just 6 EUR.). Ferries to the island run regularly from 06:30 – 19:30. You’ll find more details including transportation by private car or shared minibus here .

Getting around the island is fairly easy and straightforward. The main mode of transport is by songthaew ( pick-up truck taxi ) they run from the ferry terminal stopping at all the beaches along the West Coast of the island, but they rarely leave unless full. You can catch a songthaew day or night to get around, but be aware that prices increase after around 22:00.

Another option is to rent a motorbike, there are literally hundreds of places to rent scooters and all at very reasonable prices.  Figure on 150 – 250 Baht / 24 hours. You will have to provide your driving license and passport upon rental of the motorbike.

If you’re wanting to escape the tourists and have more of a peaceful experience on Koh Chang, then head to the eastern side of the island. The eastern side is less developed and more isolated than the West. You will get to experience true local life on the island around the fishing villages and get out into the lush green countryside to explore the jungle and majestic waterfalls hidden in its interior. To get around the eastern side of Koh Chang you will need your own transport due to the lack of public transport. Rent a scooter and go and explore, you won’t regret it.

Where to Stay on Ko Chang?

Ko Chang used to be well off the beaten path and only visited by the hardened backpacker, and although the island has seen a big increase in development and tourism in the last 10 or so years due to the Thai government trying to develop it, it is still not on the same level as the southern islands such as Phuket or Koh Samui. With an airport located just 20 kilometres away from the ferry terminal in Trat, Ko Chang is easier to get to than ever before.  There are three daily flights from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport on Bangkok Airways.

International travellers are being drawn to Ko Chang’s white sandy beaches and luxury hotels, but don’t be put off from visiting the island if your on a budget as it’s still an affordable place to stay for families and backpackers. There is an extensive range of accommodation available to suit every need and budget.

The choice of accommodation is vast, which is not surprising considering how large the island is. You will be able to find anything from luxury villas , right down to budget beach huts and everything imaginable in-between to suit your needs and budget.

The most popular areas are on the West coast of Ko Chang. As noted in all the travel guides, White Sand beach is the most popular on the island and so attracts the highest amount of tourists. Found towards the north of the island, here you will find some of the islands best resorts such as KC Grande Resort, on offer alongside some good mid-range beachfront accommodation such as the popular Cookies Hotel.

If the above two places haven’t taken your fancy then two other popular choices on Ko Chang are Klong Prao Beach and Kai Bae Beach.

Klong Prao and Kai Bae beaches are great options for families.  They boast a mix of large 4 star resorts and mid range bungalows.  Some of the islands best resorts, such as Emerald Cove Resort, Gajapuri Resort or The Chill are in this area in the centre of the west coast of the island.

Lonely beach can be found heading towards the south of the island. This is also where you will find the majority of backpackers, attracted to the many budget accommodation options and daily parties during the high season. Some of the better places are Nature Beach Resort, Warapura Resort and Oasis Bungalows.

If you’re on a budget but wan’t somewhere quieter than lonely beach, Bailan is a popular spot with many small, mid-range bungalow resorts clustered in the centre of the small village.  Finally, way down on the south coast of the island you’ll find the chilled, Klong Kloi beach which has great views to the islands south of Koh Chang.  There’s everything from budget huts for a few hundred Baht a night to 5 star luxury at Chivapuri Beach Resort.

If you head to Klong Prao Beach you will find upmarket large scale resorts like The Emerald Cove and The Dewa, so a good place to be if your on a flexible budget. If your pockets are not so deep, head up towards the Northern end of the beach, here you will find cheaper beach front accommodation to suite smaller budgets at Chai Chet Resort or Koh Chang Resort.

Kai Bae Beach has a relaxed feel about it and has recently gone up a level in the accommodation stakes and is home to some exclusive resorts like AWA Resort, Gajapuri Resort and The Chill which are all serious contenders to being the best on the island.

Towards the Southern end of the beach are the still popular smaller resorts and some budget bungalows such as The Garden Resort and Sea Breeze. Plus beachfront resorts owned by members of an extended local family – KB Resort, Kai Bae Hut Resort and Kai Bae Beach Resort are all worth considering for a good value beach bungalow.

You'll get some great sunset photos at any time of the year.

What to Do on Ko Chang?

There is more to Koh Chang than just the luxury resorts and stunning beaches. If you’re an adventurous type and don’t particularly enjoy spending all your time on the beach, then this island has a lot to offer. Some of the most popular activities on Koh Chang are kayaking, jungle trekking and diving and snorkelling.

Another highlight is visiting the many waterfalls located throughout the island. For something more laid back why not take a Thai cooking class, ride on the back on an elephant on a jungle trek and then end the day with a relaxing massage in one of the many spa’s on the island.

And if you have time then why read the guide and head south to Koh Mak  or Koh Kood . Both of which are ideal for a few days chilling on laid back, vehicle free, islands.

Located 350 kilometers (217 miles) from Bangkok on the far eastern side of the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Chang is the second-largest island in the kingdom. For many years, Koh Chang remained mostly undiscovered.

Although the island has seen steady development over the last decade, it's nowhere near on the scale of the more popular tourist islands of Phuket and Koh Samui.

Koh Chang, or Elephant Island, retains its rustic charm while still offering visitors a slice of luxury and all the creature comforts you could want from a major tourist destination.

Here, we have detailed the top 10 things to do in Koh Chang.

Discover real reviews of Highlights Travel Family 's best-rated service across trusted platforms.

1. Check Out the Island's Amazing Beaches

Koh Chang is a large island with many beaches, each having a different atmosphere with different activities. Choosing the right beach is important as Koh Chang is very spread out so walking from beach to beach isn't really an option.

White Sand Beach is the most popular and densely populated beach on the island, with bars, restaurants, and a market. It has by far the largest concentration of upmarket resorts on the island.

Kai Bae Beach is popular with young families and couples and has a more chilled atmosphere than White Sands Beach while still housing some upmarket resorts.

Lonely Beach is the island's backpacker area and the ideal beach for travelers on a tight budget who like to party.

Bangbao Beach is in the quaint old fishing village of Bangbao and is a very relaxed beach. If you like to get away from the crowds, this is your spot. Accommodation is limited in Bangbao and gets booked months in advance.

2. Visit Klong Plu Waterfall

There are several fantastic waterfalls in Koh Chang. Klong Plu Waterfall is the most popular one and is by far the most accessible.

Unlike some of the island's other waterfalls, Klong Plu Waterfall has water almost all year round, meaning it can even be enjoyed at the start of the dry season. There is a plunge pool at the bottom of the waterfall that makes for a refreshing break from the heat.

The whole area does get busy with tour groups so it's best to arrive at the waterfall early to avoid the crowds. Klong Plu Waterfall is part of the island's national park so there is a 200 baht entrance fee for adults. Kids can visit for 100 baht.

3. Taste Amazing Seafood at Bangbao Fishing Village

The houses in Bangbao village are perched on stilts with a bridge linking each home in the community.

The village has changed over the years, with many traditional fishing houses being turned into homestays as well as dive shops and tour agencies popping up around it.

Sitting outside above the water for lunch or dinner with a plate of the freshest catch of the day is a great experience.

The seas around Trat, where Koh Chang is located, are famous for having some of the best mantis shrimp, cuttlefish, crab, and shrimp in Thailand. Order any of these from one of Bangbao's many seafood restaurants and we are sure you won't be disappointed.

10-Day Best of Thailand in Yi Peng Festival:

4. Go to Kai Bae Viewpoint

Kai Bae Viewpoint is located on the west of Koh Chang and boasts one of the best views on the entire island. Sitting above Sea View Resort on Kai Bae Beach, you can see views of Koh Yuak, Koh Pli, Koh Man Nai, and Koh Man Nok.

At either mid-morning or sunset, you are almost guaranteed to get that perfect family photo or social media snap. Kae Bae Viewpoint is best reached by car or motorbike.

5. Visit Salakphet Mangrove Walkway

Nicknamed 'the Red Bridge' due to its rust-red color, Salakphet Mangrove Walkway takes you on a scenic walk through the Koh Chang mangroves.

It boasts a 360-degree panoramic view with a sea of greenery as far as the eye can see. It's a perfect spot for nature lovers as there is plenty of flora and fauna on offer.

6. Appreciate the Sunset at Chai Chet Cape

Chai Chet Cape is another fantastic destination for sunset views in Koh Chang. Situated at the northernmost end of Klong Prao Beach, the views are even more dramatic than at the above-mentioned Kai Bae Beach, with jagged rock formations shooting out of the water.

After the sun's gone down, head to Chai Chet village where you'll find some of the most authentic local food and drink stalls on the island. Don't miss the famous Thai roti and smoothies!

7. Take a Scuba Diving Course

Koh Chang has a bustling scuba diving scene with many well-established, well-run dive companies competing for business. The best time to see the island's top sites, such as the HTMS Chang shipwreck, is between November and May when the water visibility is at its best.

Koh Chang is surrounded by smaller islands that are perfect for diving so there is no shortage of sites to visit to keep your dive days interesting. The most popular sites are Hin Lak Bat, Hin Tai Nam, Hin Rua Tek, and the islands around Koh Rang.

The common sea life you can spot includes groupers, moray eels, barracuda, clownfish, giant sea turtles, and, if you're really fortunate, the odd whale shark!

8. Go Snorkeling Around the Island

If you don't feel comfortable diving but still want to see the island's amazing marine life, there are some excellent snorkeling tours on offer around Koh Chang.

The best snorkeling trips head to the large, uninhabited island of Koh Rang off the southern coast of Koh Chang.

If you are visiting the island in October or November and the sea is clear, you can rent a canoe and make your own way to Koh Rang from either Klong Prao Beach or Kai Bae Beach.

A great way to snorkel and see the best of Koh Chang is to hire a private boat to take you around the island's different beaches and coves.

9. Take an Authentic Thai Cooking Class

Thai cooking classes are always a fun experience for visitors to Koh Chang. You can learn so much about the local island culture by cooking the local food. You also get to eat some of the best food you will have on your whole trip and you will have cooked it yourself!

There are dozens of cooking schools and classes to choose from in Koh Chang. The highly recommended ones are Koh Chang Thai Cooking School, Napalai Thai Cooking School, and Happy Turtle.

Each school has different lengths of class times as well as unique menus to choose from. Most classes and schools are happy to accommodate vegetarian and vegan courses with prior notice.

10. Get a Traditional Thai Massage and Spa Treatment

You can't visit a Thai island without getting a traditional Thai massage. With Koh Chang being such a huge island, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to spa treatments, with salons to suit any traveler's budget.

You can opt for a Thai massage, an oil massage, or even a Swedish massage, the options are endless. You'll find Koh Chang spas using traditional treatments, such as tamarind and honey moisturizers, sea salt body scrubs, and local white mud for facial cleansing.

A real treat is to get your spa treatment done at one of Koh Chang's many 5-star resorts overlooking one of the island's tropical beaches. It doesn't get much more relaxing than that!

Jessie was amazing ! Everything from her level of English to her understanding of what we valued .

We had a good time exploring the city with Selinda!

Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

She was very flexible and added extra time when we needed it and we felt extremely well taken care of. She also chose the best restaurants for us,

Our tour guide Helen, was excellent, she was very kind, professional and passionate for her work and she also loves Pandas! She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.

Tom is the guide that will take you to where no other guide will. We pushed for the experience and Tom and the team delivered more than what we could have ever asked for. His English speaking ability and his Chinese history knowledge is second to none.

Koh Chang, the Elephant Island

Koh chang travel guide.

Despite being the third largest island in Thailand, Koh Chang is not one of the best known islands in the country . Its name means ‘elephant island’, not because it has such animals but for the island’s abrupt relief, which supposedly resembles the shape of an elephant. The island has a large and wild inland area covered by steep mountains and jungle , and this is probably the main reason why tourist development of Koh Chang started much later than in other popular Thai islands. But in the last two decades the island’s infrastructures have quickly developed along its west coast , where most of the beaches are concentrated. Fortunately, Koh Chang has so far managed to retain some of its wild atmosphere, that other touristy Thai islands have long lost . Some of the beaches on Koh Chang are really beautiful, although many agree that overall they are not among the most spectacular in Thailand. But while staying in Koh Chang it only takes a boat daytrip to explore Mu Koh Chang National Maritime Park , which includes fifty islands, some of them virgin and beautiful as the little paradise of Koh Rang. All in all, Koh Chang is a great beach destination while traveling in Thailand .

There are all kind of beaches in Koh Chang: some concentrate many hotels, restaurants and all kinds of tourist services –such as Haad Sai Khao (White Sand Beach)–, others offer a backpacker atmosphere and parties every night –such as Haad Nam (Lonely Beach)–, and some others are ideal for those looking for total calm –such as Haad Yao (Long Beach)–.

ℹ️ Top Things to Do in Koh Chang

One of the best ways to enjoy the Koh Chang archipelago is to join a full-day boat tour , including a few stops at some of the most beautiful islands and beaches, as well as time for some snorkeling. All tourist agencies in the island offer this type of boat tours, which can be done either by speedboat or by regular boat . In general, we recommend the second option, since it is much safer, more comfortable and cheaper, about 600-900 THB/person, usually including food, snorkeling equipment and transfer from/to your accommodation, although on top of this price you must add the 200 THB entrance fee to the National Marine Park.

Trekking Koh Chang

There are many waterfalls in Koh Chang, some of them hidden deep in the jungle, others easy to reach . Keep in mind that the flow varies enormously depending on the time of year, and logically the falls look more spectacular well into the rainy season -between July and October-, while between the months of February and May they fall with very little water. The two most popular and easily accessible waterfalls in Koh Chang are Khlong Phlu -the most popular and busy, largely due to its easy access east of Khlong Prao beach- and Than Mayom -a popular picnic spot for Thai tourists on weekends, near the town of Dan Mai in the east coast-. Entrance fee of 200 THB for each one of the waterfalls, valid for both if visiting on the same day.

Diving & Snorkeling

The Koh Chang archipelago is made up of 51 islands and islets, some of them really beautiful, untouched and with a crystal clear marine environment perfect for diving and snorkeling . All of the island’s diving agencies have an office at Bang Bao Pier, the sheltered bay on the south coast from which all Koh Chang dive expeditions depart. One-day dive expeditions typically start at around THB 2,500, while the price of a PADI certificate course costs THB 14,500. Many dive shops on the island remain open during low season -rainy season-, despite the fact that visibility and sea conditions are usually not very good.

Kayaking & Paddle Surfing

There are several coastal areas of Koh Chang which are perfect for exploring aboard a kayak or paddle surfboard , to reach the islets near the coast, explore its bays and explore the beautiful mangrove areas found in the many estuaries of the island. Some of the most attractive areas to practice these sports are the bays of Bang Bao, Khlong Prao, Salak Phet and Salak Khok , and in all of them there are kayak and paddle board rental businesses. Don’t miss out, Koh Chang is ideal for exploring by rowing!

Nightlife Koh Chang

Nightlife in Koh Chang is centered around Lonely Beach -party central-, Haad Sai Khao -more urban- and Kai Bae -more laid back- , with a few other odd spots scattered along the west coast. Lonely Beach is the most hard partying area in the island, with lots of bars, live music, and beach bars with Dj’s that keep thumping and open until late into the night and beyond.  Besides bars and live music spots, more developed Haad Sai Khao has a more urban feel in comparison , with a nightclub, some sports pubs and even what seems a miniature version of a Pattaya style red light area. Kai Bae party scene is more low key, and in general more popular among the middle aged than the young.

🏨 Where to stay in Koh Chang

Best areas & beaches in koh chang:.

The bulk of the accommodation in Koh Chang is found along its west coast, even though there are quite a few options in the south coast, and a few scattered along the east coast. Take a close look at the island’s map before choosing the area you want to stay at, since the road that runs close to the coastline is not really a loop, and it gets cut off for a short rugged stretch in the south, making Koh Chang’s east coast rather remote in its southern stretch.

Haad Sai Khao (White Sand Beach)

South Coast, Koh Pha Ngan

Accommodation available: all kinds, from hostels and cheap bungalows up to 4 star Resorts.

Advantages: ✔️ The northern part of this long beach is really pretty and feels somehow remote. ✔️ Lots of hotels, resorts, restaurants, bars, shops and tour agencies. ✔️ Many different nightlife options.

Lonely Beach (Haad Nam)

Full Moon party Icon

Accommodation available: Mainly cheap guest houses and bungalows, up to 3 star Resorts.

Advantages: ✔️ Beautiful beach. ✔️ Lots of accommodation, restaurants, bars, shops, minimarts and tour agencies. ✔️ Most lively nightlife area in all of the island.

East Coast, Koh Pha Ngan

Accommodation available: all kinds, from cheap Bungalows and up to 4 star Resorts.

Advantages: ✔️ Central location in the middle of west coast, along which most of the beaches are located. ✔️ Restaurants and bars in Kai Bae are overall renowned as the best in Koh Chang. ✔️ Beautiful beach, although narrow and not especially good for swimming.

South Coast

North Coast, Koh Pha Ngan

Advantages: ✔️ Beaches and bays you can find here: Ao Bang Bao, Haad Khlong Koi, Ao Salak Phet, Haad Yao (Long Beach). ✔️ Ao Bang Bao and Haad Khlong Koi are conveniently connected by road to the west coast. ✔️ Ao Salak Phet and Haad Yao are the most remote, great if you’re looking for a secluded location.

🏖️ Best beaches in Koh Chang

We’ve been to all of them, these are the best:, 1️⃣ bang bao & haad khlong koi.

Bang Bao, the starting point for all diving expeditions, is a quiet fishing village at the western end of the south coast, in a well sheltered and beautiful bay. The best beach in the area is Haad Khlong Koi, in the central area of the bay. In fact it is no one but three contiguous beaches, all of them quiet and really beautiful, with a narrow strip of khaki sand, and an abundant offer of accommodation, ranging from simple and economical wooden cabins up to some luxury resorts.

2️⃣ Haad Yao (Long Beach)

Remote Ao Salak Phet, in the eastern half of the south coast, is a really beautiful and unique bay, sheltered between two peninsulas, with three islets protruding from the water in the center of the bay, and a perfect mangrove estuary to explore aboard a kayak. In general, the beaches in Ao Salak Phet are not among the best of the island, but gorgeous Haad Yao is an outstanding exception to this, even though in rainy season quite a lot of waste flushes onto the beach.

3️⃣ Kai Bae

Kai Bae is a popular tourist beach, with a broad offer in accommodation, restaurants and bars. What makes Kai Bae especially beautiful are the islets that jut out from the sea right in front, which makes it a great place to rent a kayak and go snorkeling around them. On the downside, it has only a narrow strip of sand, which in some sections disappears completely when the tide rises, and it is also not very good for swimming, since the water along the shore is shallow, and there are quite a few rocks and algae.

4️⃣ Lonely Beach (Haad Nam)

Lonely Beach -known locally as Haad Nam- is by far the most popular beach among the young crowd, offering cheap accommodation, a backpacker atmosphere and parties that  go on until late night hours. The beach is really pretty, but not at all lonely as its English name suggests: its narrow strip of sand can get really crowded during high season. There are many monkeys in the area, so you better keep an eye on your posessions!

5️⃣ Ao Khlong Prao

Khlong Prao Bay, right in the middle of the west coast, is an excellent location as a base camp, provided you have your own vehicle. At its northern end there’s the town of Chai Chet, with a beautiful beach facing south, recommended for those traveling with children due to its shallow waters. Ao Khlong Prao Bay extends all the way s outh from Chai Chet, with a series of narrow beaches disrupted by three estuaries. The beaches keep narrowing down on its way south, with some stretches completely disapperaring in the high tide hours.

6️⃣ Haad Sai Khao (White Sand Beach)

Haad Sai Khao, Koh Chang

7️⃣ Ao Bailan

Ao Bailan is located immediately south of Lonely Beach, a small bay with a small beach at each end, with a mix of sand and rock. The beach is beautiful even though not very good for bathing, but most people fall in love with its relaxed vibe. The few accommodations options here are small resorts with a family atmosphere, a good option if you want to sleep tight and quiet but at the same time be quite close to Lonely Beach party scene.

8️⃣ Khlong Son

The town of Khlong Son is located next to the bay at the northwestern tip of the island, and despite the fact that all travelers pass by Khlong Son during the journey from the arrival pier to their accommodation on the west coast, few stop here. The town has grown to become one of the main residential areas in the island, and it has a really beautiful sandy beach. Accommodation options are generally mid-range and high-end, although off the beach there are also some fairly inexpensive options.

✈️ Getting to Koh Chang

To reach Koh Chang, you must first get to Trat, and then go to the Ao Thammachat pier (at Laem Ngop) and take a ferry to the island.

From Bangkok, you can get there by combining plane or bus with boat:

Plane + boat.

➡️ Easiest, fastest but most expensive option: fly from Bangkok to Trat with Bangkok Airways . There are usually 2 daily departures. ➡️ If you didn’t arrange all transportation in advance, at Trat airport you can hire the combined transport by road to the pier + the boat to the island of Koh Chang.

➡️ Check the flight and ferry timings to make sure there’s time enough for the connection, or otherwise you’ll have to stay one night in Trat.

➡️ From Bangkok’s Ekkamai bus terminal, you can take a bus, minibus or van to Trat. The journey takes about 5 hours, the ticket costs between 200 and 250 THB, and there are frequent departures between 05:00 and 23:30. ➡️ From the Trat bus station you’ll have to take a songthaew (60 THB) to Ao Thammachat jetty, and finally take a ferry to Koh Chang.

➡️ To make things easier, you can buy a combined bus ticket including the transfer to the pier and the ferry to Koh Chang.

➡️ In high season there are ferry departures every 45 minutes in both directions, between 06:00 and 19:00, for 80 THB/person, and the trip takes about 45 minutes.

➡️ During high season -November-April-, there are four daily boats connecting Koh Chang with its main neighboring islands, Koh Mak and Koh Kood, while only some of them stop as well at Koh Way and Koh Rayang. ➡️ In Koh Chang three of these boats use a pier at Bang Bao (south coast), and another one uses a pier at Kai Bae (west coast). ➡️ Price ranges between 300 and 900 THB, depending on company and destination.

➡️ In low season these boats stop operating.

A Perfect 3-5 Day Koh Chang Itinerary: Thailand’s Hidden Gem (2024)

  • by Danika Clark
  • October 16, 2023

Looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination in Thailand that is still filled with beautiful beaches? Look no further than Koh Chang Island!

I visited Koh Chang Island during my 1 year living in Thailand and fell in love! This was, by far, my favorite island I visited in Thailand. Its little tourism, beautiful beaches, and relaxing vibes were everything I hoped for from an island here.

This 3-5 day Koh Chang Itinerary aims to help you make the most out of your time in Koh Chang. First I will answer some FAQs about the island, and then we will get into the 3-5 day Koh Chang itinerary with tips and tricks from my visit!

island tour koh chang

Table of Contents

How many days do you need in koh chang thailand.

3-5 days is the perfect amount of time to spend on Koh Chang. This gives you enough time to get your bearings on the island, and visit the main sites and attractions while having time to relax by the beach.

Koh Chang is a beautiful Thai oasis, so having more than 5 days is incredible. With extra days you can continue to relax on this beautiful island and take advantage of more fun activities.

But, for your first visit to Koh Chang, 3-5 days is plenty to have a feel for this beautiful island.

Overview of Koh Chang

Koh Chang is the third largest island in Thailand. However, it’s one of the least popular islands to visit among Western tourists. Located in the providence of Trat, in the eastern corner of Thailand, Koh Chang does not see as many tourists.

Koh Chang is a fairly undeveloped island compared to touristy ones like Koh Pangan, Phuket, and Phi Phi Islands. Koh Chang can be translated to “Elephant Island”. It gets its name because of its elephant-shaped island.

Koh Chang is chalked full of world-class beaches, beautiful nature, and things to do. It’s close proximity to Bangkok also makes it great for a short and easy escape from Bangkok city life.

How to Get to Koh Chang Island Thailand

There are a few ways to get from Bangkok to Koh Chang . Shared bus, flying, or driving yourself.

The easiest of these options from Bangkok is the shared bus. For a set price, you can book a 5-hour bus from the city center of Bangkok, or BKK airport, all the way to your accommodation in Koh Chang. However, it does involve transfers onto the ferry and maybe switching a bus once or twice.

But, due to the more remote location of Koh Chang, the shared bus is the best way, and you’ll probably be accompanied by other travelers.

There is no airport on the island of Koh Chang. The closest airport is the Trat International Airport. You can get to the Trat airport by connecting through BKK or DMK airport. However, the Trat Airport is still quite a ways from the ferry port to get to Koh Chang. I would only recommend this route if you are already flying into a Bangkok airport and just looking to connect through it.

How To Get Around Koh Chang

Renting a motorbike is the best way to get around Koh Chang Island. A motorbike gives you access to parts of the island you otherwise wouldn’t be able to reach.

The roads in Koh Chang can get pretty steep and narrow very quickly though. So, if you aren’t comfortable riding a motorbike, you should practice ahead of time.

The Island has one main road that runs in a circle around it, however, it doesn’t fully connect. Therefore, you cannot drive a complete circle around the island. It takes about 2 hours from one end of the island to the other, without stops. This makes for about a 4-hour round-trip motorbike adventure.

If you are not comfortable on a motorbike, I recommend staying in the White Sand Beach area. Here you will easily be able to find taxis and songtaews to get you around the island. Also, this area is very walkable with lots of grocery stores, restaurants, and things to do in the area.

The Perfect 3-5 Day Koh Chang Itinerary

This itinerary is based on my most recent trip to Koh Chang, Thailand. This itinerary will take you to the best beaches, restaurants, and things to do around the island.

Day 1: Arrive to the Island/ Relax/ Head to the Beach

Day 1 of your Koh Chang Itinerary you’ll settle into your accommodation and explore the area.

Morning: Travel from Bangkok to Koh Chang

It’s a long travel day from Bangkok to Koh Chang, but it’s well worth the adventure. Spend your morning traveling from Bangkok to Koh Chang. Whatever way you choose to get here, flying by shared bus transfer, you’ll probably arrive on the island by mid-day.

Afternoon: Settle into your Accommodations

Spend your afternoon settling into your accommodations. After the 5-hour bus, ferry ride, and another bus transfer to your accommodation, you might need some time to refresh.

Whether you are staying in the White Sand Beach Area, Lonely Beach, or elsewhere, odds are you’ll be within walking distance of the beach. Get to know the area, hang out by your beach, and get your plans together for the next few days of your Koh Chang itinerary.

Thailand motorbike lookout point - Koh Chang Itinerary

Evening: Dinner Near Your Accommodation

The evening is a magical time on Koh Chang Island. The sunsets here are incredible, and you’ll have a great view anywhere on the west side of the island.

For the evening, I recommend getting dinner near your accommodations. There’s no reason to rent a motorbike today and drive somewhere. So, relax near your accommodation.

If you are staying in the White Sand Beach area, you are in luck because there are loads of restaurants along the beach. The restaurants here range in price, but usually, you can find something in the mid-level range. Also, along the beach, you may get lucky and see a fire show!

If you are staying in the Lonely Beach area, there are not as many restaurants to choose from, but there are still a few. Many of them are a short drive away, but there are also many walkable.

My favorite restaurant near Lonely Beach is ร้านอาหาร ป.ปลา ริมหาดโลนลี่บีช. You’ll probably want to translate that, as there is no English translation. Copy and paste it into your browser URL for its location.

Day 2: Explore the Island by Motorbike

Rise and Shine! Day 2 of your Koh Chang Itinerary will be a big day exploring the island and discovering all it offers!

Morning and Afternoon: Explore the Island

Wake up early and rent a motorbike. I suggest checking the motorbike situation on Day 1, and see what time they will be available. Once you have a motorbike, it’s time to get going.

Depending on where you are staying on the island, the order of things you want to do will differ. So, here is a comprehensive list of things you should do during your road trip around the island today.

Kai Bae Lookout Point

A beautiful lookout point just before Lonley Beach. Stop here to grab a coffee and soak in the views. It’s beautiful at all times a day, but especially magical at night.

When you stop here, you’ll find a huge parking lot and space to spread out to take in the views.

Kai Bae Viewpoint at sunset - koh chang itinerary

Khlong Phulu Waterfall

Next to Khlong Prao Beach, this waterfall is a quick and easy walk that ends with a beautiful waterfall. Koh Chang is full of lush and dense forests, and this one is an easy one to find.

The waterfalls can be tricky to visit, because if it rains during your visit, the waterfall may be slippery to get to.

However, if you are able to visit this waterfall, you can swim in it! What’s better than swimming in a waterfall?!

Salakphet Mangrove Walkway

On the far eastern end of the island, you will find the Salakphet Mangrove Walkway. This red-planked walkway through the forest is one of the best things to do on the island. Depending on the time of year you visit, it can become very crowded as well!

Once you arrive, you’ll find another huge parking lot and the entrance to the mangroves. It’s a bit off the main road, but relatively easy to find.

The Mangrove Walkway is an easy walk through the forest with beautiful natural views, and at the end, it opens up to a peaceful view of the water.

Salakphet Mangrove Walkway - red walkway in mangroves

Bang Bao Fishing Village

The Bang Bao Fishing Village is located at the end of the western side of the island. This is where you will probably get to your snorkel or other boating tours. But, it’s also a really nice place to stop and spend some time!

The fishing village has lots of shops to get souvenirs, restaurants, and good views. Unfortunately during my trip, we just walked through the village quickly on the way to our snorkeling tour, but I really wish I could have explored here more!

Explore Some Beaches

The beaches on Koh Chang are undeniably beautiful. I mean, this Thai oasis is incredible! During your road trip, stop by some of the beaches around the island to relax. The most popular beaches are White Sand Beach, Khlong Prao Beach, Bang Bao Beach, and Lonely Beach. These may be the most popular ones, but there are so many incredible beaches around the island!

Don’t be afraid to get lost and go off the beaten path!

Beautiful thailand beach with blue water - Koh Chang Itinerary

Evening: Dinner

After your big day exploring the island via motorbike, you have probably worked up an appetite! Tonight, you can head back to White Sand Beach or go to Khlong Prao Beach.

Both of these beach areas have lots of restaurants, many of which are inside hotels. Honestly, I recommend just eating as close to your accommodation as possible to limit driving. You’ve driven a lot today.

Day 3: Snorkel Tour

On day three of your Koh Chang Itinerary, it’s time to get out on the water!

Morning and Afternoon: Snorkel Tour

Today is the day for you to go on a snorkel tour around the island! This is best ti be booked one or two days in advance. Your snorkel tour will probably begin early in the morning and last until late in the afternoon.

The snorkeling around Koh Chang is a must-do! This was by far by favorite snorkel excursion throughout my time in Thailand. Not only was it more cost-effective, but the snorkeling was world-class with vibrant coral reefs, not overcrowded at all, and the food on the boat was delicious.

When you book the snorkel tour, be use the tour picks you up and drops you off at your accommodations. This makes it much easier to get to Bang Bao Beach and limits one more thing you will need to do in the morning.

koh chang itinerary - boat dock in koh chang

For the snorkel tour, they will have everything you need. Food, water, and a snorkel are all provided.

However, there are a few items you should pack in advance! This includes sunscreen, a towel, a bag to keep your belongings, and a camera.

Keep in mind, that Koh Chang is much more of a Thai island than a western island. Therefore, many people on your boat will be Thai or some nearby countries. In their culture, it’s not common to wear a bikini, as they dress very modestly.

Of course, wear a bikini if that is all you have and what you feel comfortable with. However, if you want to blend in more, you will want a more modest swimsuit.

By the late afternoon, you should be dropped back off at your accommodation.

Evening: Find food near your accommodation and relax in the area

Spend the evening freshening up from your snorkeling tour. Once you’re done, you’ll want to find food near your accommodation and get ready for your next big day on the island.

Day 4: Beach Day and Kayak Day

If you are lucky enough to have more than 3 days on Koh Chang, these last two days are your bonus days! Koh Chang is filled with lots of fun activities, and day 4 of your Koh Chang Itinerary is no exception!

island tour koh chang

Morning and Afternoon: Rent Kayaks and Relax by the Beach

Spend your fourth day on Koh Chang at Kai Bae Beach. Here you can head to Koh Yuak, the closest island to Koh Chang.

This beautiful island has no infrastructure on it and is a beautiful way to spend your day on a quiet island.

To get to Koh Yuak, you can rent kayaks and paddle yourself out to the island, or there is a boat that will take you there for a set price.

The water on Koh Yuak is pristine, and the clearest water in the area. You will probably find lots of fish swimming in the area too.

If you choose to kayak here, it is a full-day adventure, but one worth taking! You can rent kayaks from either Kai Bae Beach or Klong Prao Beach. You’ll want to pack lots of snacks, lunch, and water too!

koh chang itinerary - boat dock in koh chang

Day 5: Hike Mount Salakphet

On the last day of your Koh Chang itinerary, you have two options, hike up a mountain or relax and continue to explore the island.

Your last day in Koh Chang can be spent in many ways, but if you are up for a big adventure, hike Mount Salakphet.

Mount Salakphet is the tallest point on Koh Chang, and takes around 8 hours to complete and gains over 2,500 feet in elevation!

This means, packing water, snacks, and a good attitude. For this trek, I recommend booking a guide. The trek has many different paths to take, and it’s easy to get lost.

If you don’t feel like hiking, that’s alright! Pack up your beach bags for another fun day at the beach or explore more waterfalls on the island! There really is so much to do here. Use your last day to complete any activities you haven’t yet done, or just relax by the beach.

Final Thoughts on This Koh Chang Itinerary

No matter how you choose to spend your time on Thailand’s third-largest island, you will discover the beauty of Koh Chang. From it’s beautiful waterfalls and lush forest, incredible driving views, and picture-perfect beaches, you won’t be disappointed.

I absolutely loved my visit to Koh Chang and I hope you are also able to find the magic of the island during your trip!

Koh Chang Island Hopping

Island Hopping in the Gulf of Thailand

I always thought that island hopping belonged to those islands in the south of Thailand such as Koh Lipe  or Koh Phi Phi. It wasn’t until a recent trip to the Gulf of Thailand that I realized the abundance of small tropical islands dotting the area. There is a real potential for a Koh Chang Island Hopping experience much closer to Bangkok. Koh Chang is only 4 hours from Bangkok by minivan departing Victory Monument.

A Koh Chang island hopping experience is typically going to consist of 3 to 4 islands which may include names such as Koh Wai , Koh Rangyai and Koh Lek. Then there are the many in between islands with simply no names on which you will find similarly beautiful no named beaches, of which you may never be able to find again.

Koh Chang Island Hopping Boat

Most island hopping tours depart at 9am from the village of Bangbao on the south west side of Koh Chang, but you are generally advised to arrive by 8.30am so that the boat can properly load and leave on time. Therefore our day begins nice and early with a quick breakfast in the backpacker town of Lonely Beach and a dash down to the pier in Bangbao Village .

With little time to spare we make a pit stop in a local minimart at Bangbo village where we take the advantage to fill our icebox with cold Leo beers and an avalanche of ice. Our group of ten island hopping participants has decided that the remainder of the day will follow the laws of Beer-for-Beer which is sure to brew up a few goods stories. The law of Beer-for-Beer states that when I have one beer, when challenged you must also have one beer.

Trying to make the most of limited space in the icebox, we spend far too long playing Tetris with the assortment of bottles and cans and come to the realization that the boat is about to set off without us. Quickly we resume our march towards the boat following the seemingly endless pier winding its way through the small ocean perched village. To our relief we make it aboard just in time and triumphantly open the first cold beers celebrating the start of our Koh Chang island hopping adventure.

Minutes later the island hopping boat leaves the pier and the people of Bangbao Village behind and sets off through the Gulf of Thailand in the direction of Cambodia. We chug on for a good 45 minutes around the outer edges of Koh Chang until our first destination comes within sight.

Koh Wai is a private little island with a view of a heavily forested mountain across a stretch of turquoise-blue waters. It is reached from the boat by a long handcrafted wooden pier. Apparently is it time to jump off the boats upper deck and into the refreshing ocean below.

The beach here is unlike those on Koh Chang. It more like those found on Koh Adang, overtaken by nature.

Koh Wai

After an hour of sunbathing and swimming at Koh Wai we are all back on the boat and ready to set off for the next island. Koh Rangyai is an island I have been looking forward to visiting after discovering beautiful images of isolated beaches posted on Instagram by #kohchang. Expectations were not let down as the boat anchored about 200 meters away from a deserted driftwood strewn beach. We spend the best part of two hours at Koh Rangyai lazing around in the sun and swimming around the island’s clear waters.

Koh Chang island hopping boat

Heading off for our final destination of the day, we are called for to pick up our tour inclusive lunch set. On offering is a basic but tasty set of Thai foods including fried chicken, sweet and sour stir fried vegetables, some rather spicy noodles, all topped over a mountain of rice.

Well fed, and starting to feel the energy drain from the abundance of sun we pull up to or final destination. A small island of which I do not actually know the name is where we spend the rest of the afternoon with options available for snorkeling, fishing, and swimming or just chilling on the boat. Our group quite happily decides on laying back on the boat, just admiring the beautiful jungle island in front with a few more of those refreshing cold Leo beers.

How much will a Koh Chang Island Hopping trip cost me?

Koh Chang island hopping tours should cost about 700thb which will include transport from your guesthouse to the ferry pier and a cooked set of Thai dishes for lunch on board. However prices on Koh Chang can range drastically, we met a couple on board who had paid 1000thb each for their tickets, so be careful for those rip-off deals.

Where can I book a Koh Chang Island Hopping trip?

Island hopping tours are not always labeled as such, however any tour shop which sells day trips or snorkeling tours could be regarded as an island hopping tour. Our boat tickets were booked from a small tour/motorbike shop on Lonely Beach across the bridge from Riverstone bar. The lady is friendly and honest and her prices are decent.

How do I make the most of my island hopping experience?

The trip is not all about where you are going but who you’re with. Different tours will go to different places so don’t get hung up on which island each boat is going to or which destination has the most deserted beach. If you are alone make sure you meet the people on the boat. By the end of the day you’ll all be best friends from around the world and jumping off the boats upper deck together.

I would also recommend taking along a waterproof action camera such as a GoPro or Yi camera . This will allow you to make the best videos and photos of your day in the water.

Swimming counter-clockwise from where our Koh Chang snorkeling boat was anchored, we reached the far side of the small, rocky island. There was no one else around, except for the fish that idly swam a few feet below us, always just out of reach.

The sun made its first appearance of our Koh Chang day trip and illuminated the sea floor in a spectrum of vibrant colors. Coral glowed neon blue, purple anemone swayed on the current and bright butterfly-fish and brilliant parrot-fish vied for our attention.

Further ahead of us, what looked like a murky shadow emerged as a dense school of fish. Hundreds – if not thousands – of foot-long, yellow-spotted, silver fish moved synchronously in rhythm with the soothing tide.

We chased after them, marveling at their effortless ability to travel in perfect formation. Watching the massive school of fish was the pinnacle of our Koh Chang Snorkel trip; a day that had started quite grim.

Koh Chang Snorkeling Trip

Islands, Koh Chang, Thailand

After a week in hot and humid Bangkok, we were ecstatic to be spending time on a Koh Chang beach. We weren’t looking for a long list of things to do in Koh Chang: we simply wanted to soak up the sun, swim in the sea and put our feet in the sand on one of Thailand’s Best Beaches .

It wasn’t until after we saw how clear the water was that we decided to take a Koh Chang snorkeling tour. There was just one catch: our Koh Chang trip was during the ‘Rainy Season’ – and we were in no way prepared for just how dismal the Thai wet-season weather could be.

Koh Chang Rainy Season Visit

Storms brewing over Kai Bae Beach on Koh Chang, Thailand

Our first day on Koh Chang was full of sunshine, but on the second day it started to rain…and rain… and rain . Ponchos and umbrellas became the hottest souvenirs and the main road flooded with each downpour. Regardless of the foul weather, each morning we watched truckloads of tourists depart on Koh Chang tours.

A 90% chance of rain was looming on the forecast for the remainder of our stay, but since we weren’t interested in indoor Koh Chang activities (and we’re not even sure there are any!), we went ahead with our plans and booked a Koh Chang boat trip…and wondered what it was going to be like to go snorkeling in the rain.

Sattra Tour Koh Chang

Koh Chang Snorkeling Tour, Stop 3

The most popular and inexpensive option for snorkeling Koh Chang is the Sattra Tour. With a price of just 700 baht ($20 USD) – plus an additional 200 baht ($6 USD) to enter the National Park – it is one of the most affordable Koh Chang excursions. Note that it is an additional 100 baht to rent swim fins.

The Sattra Wooden Boat Tour is offered at most Koh Chang hotels and travel agencies. We found the best price for this boat trip in Kai Bae at the small excursion hut next to the all-you-can-eat buffet. The full-day adventure departs Bang Bao, Koh Chang and makes swimming stops at four islands near Koh Chang: Koh Yak Yai, Koh Rang, Koh Yak Lek and Koh Wai.

Sattra Koh Chang Snorkeling Review

Rainy season Koh Chang snorkel trip

There are multiple boats in the Sattra Tour fleet that take visitors on snorkeling day trips – and the one we were on was large, slow and – surprisingly – near capacity. Apparently, we weren’t the only ones who were willing to get rained on while snorkeling in Koh Chang.

As we were loaded onto the ship and the rain pelted us from a dark, foreboding sky, the mood amongst the passengers was surprisingly jovial. Without much instruction, the relaxed crew prepared for the day’s outing and soon enough we headed out to sea away from Koh Chang Island.

Moments after getting underway, the crew handed out motion sickness tablets – and we were bewildered by the number of people who so eagerly swallowed the pills. As our old, converted fishing boat cleared the protection of Bang Bao Harbor and into the open sea both the rain and rolling swell steadily grew more intense.

The cheerful vibe completely vanished. Passengers sat slumped in their chairs and the crew reappeared with plastic bags for those who were feeling ill. We kept our eyes on the horizon and did our best to block out the unpleasant sounds of the seasick voyagers.

Koh Yak Yai

Sattra Tour boat crew on Koh Chang Snorkeling Excursion

After what seemed an eternity, we arrived at Koh Yak Yai (so aptly named under the circumstances). More of an islet than an island, Koh Yak Yai is located off the east coast of the larger Koh Rong Island.

With only a narrow swimming area roped off, we were bemused that this ‘island’ was the first stop on our Thailand 4 Island Tour. However, despite the slight let down – and continued rain showers – we couldn’t wait to get off the Barf Barge. We were the first to jump in the water from the bow of the ship.

The snorkeling gear was in remarkably good condition, considering the price of admission. We adjusted our masks and tubes and reveled in the sights – and, particularly, the sounds – of the sea. Fearing the stormy weather would have clouded the water, it was in fact, quite clear and there was much more to see than we anticipated. We spent the entire 45 minutes with our faces in the water watching the sea life swim by – and were the last to climb aboard when time was up.

Meanwhile, on the ship they had prepared a simple buffet lunch of traditional, yet basic, Thai dishes: a spicy potato curry, chicken pad Thai and chicken fried rice. Still dripping wet, we stood in line for a plateful and the boat motored to the second island, Koh Rang.

Sattra Tour Koh Chang boat slide

We arrived at Koh Rang before we had even finished our lunch – Rang Beach is less than a mile from Koh Yak Yai. We hurriedly slurped up the rest of our noodles as the crew lowered a slide from the side of the boat. With snorkel gear in hand, I zipped down the slide and squealed like a child as I flew off the end into the water.

A larger island sits just south of where we anchored, so rather than heading for Rang Beach, we swam to investigate what sea creatures might be living around it. Unfortunately, there weren’t many and the current at the south end of the island made it much more difficult to swim.

We retreated to Koh Rang Beach – which is home to the Koh Rang National Park Ranger Station. The sand was fine and clean and, for just a moment, the rain stopped. We lounged on the beach, digging our feet into the sand and watching large crabs dive into their holes.

Koh Yak Lek

island tour koh chang

The third island on our Koh Chang snorkeling trip, Koh Yak Lek, was larger than the first, but not by much. Even though it had started raining, we were quickly in the water and happily snorkeling in the rain – a truly unique sensation. We swam away from the boat toward the back of the island where we knew not many of the other passengers would venture.

In the solitude, we were astounded by the abundance of fish and marine life. That’s when we encountered the enormous school of fish. We also spotted a family of swimming squid, a long, black eel, parrot-fish that were two-feet long and massive, multicolored sea clams that snapped their shells shut when they sensed our approach.

The stop on Koh Yak Lek alone was worth the trip. Without a doubt, it was the best Koh Chang snorkeling spot of the day. We would have been content if it was the only stop on our day tour!

Koh Wai Snorkeling, stop 4 on 4 Island tour Thailand

Koh Wai is a larger island, about halfway between Koh Rang and Koh Chang, and the last stop on our 4-island tour in Thailand. The rustic spot has a somewhat dilapidated looking ‘resort’ consisting of a cluster of small cabins on the beach.

We were told that Koh Wai snorkeling was some of the best in the region, but when we peered into the water, were disappointed in the water clarity. We could barely see our hands through the turbid water. Whether due to the sand, the storms or pollution, the limited clarity did not lend to fish spotting. Instead, we bobbed – with our heads above water – until they called us back to the boat.

Back to Koh Chang

Koh Chang Boat Tour in Thailand

The Koh Chang weather had cleared by the afternoon and the trip back to the island was substantially smoother than the ride out (but not void of seasick passengers). The crew served fresh fruit and spicy chicken kebabs. We bought a couple beers to go with the food and listened to Bob Marley crackling through the speakers on the relaxing ride back to Koh Chang.

Final Thoughts on Snorkeling Koh Chang, Thailand

Koh Rang Beach, Stop 2 on 4 Island Snorkeling Tour, Thailand

Although our Koh Chang boat trip started out disastrously, once in the water we were quite impressed by the viewable sea life. The small islands (Koh Yak Yai and Koh Yak Lek) were spectacular for snorkeling, which isn’t always the case when places are frequented by so many visitors.

Without high hopes for Koh Chang snorkeling (given the weather), overall we were pleased with the trip – especially for the price. As with all things, it’s best to properly set expectations for this type of tour before signing up to go.

This Koh Chang boat trip is designed to accommodate as many passengers as possible – which is what keeps the cost affordable. The crew efficiently dispersed gear, meals and snacks. The food was decent and the crew was hard-working. Despite the lack of a provided itinerary, the friendly staff answered any questions we had. They also were prepared and quick to respond to ill guests.

More Koh Chang Things To Do

Sunset, Koh Chang, Thailand

Rainy season or not, there are many additional Koh Chang Things To Do. From diving to island exploration, we are sharing a few other popular Koh Chang activities.

Half Day Koh Chang Snorkeling Tours

On our trip to Koh Chang, we were seeking an affordable, full day snorkeling tour – and Sattra provides just that. Travelers who do not want to spend an entire day at sea can hop aboard a Koh Chang Snorkeling Half Day Trip. The shorter tour visits Koh Chang area islands that boast healthy reefs and marine life. Get the price and details!

Koh Chang Diving Tours

For those who want to dive deeper into sea life, there are Koh Chang Scuba Diving Tours. These companies will even teach and certify novice divers and then proceed to several small islands near Koh Chang for additional dives. Check out these diving tours for your trip to Koh Chang.

Koh Chang Tours

There are several types of tours for activities in Koh Chang. Trekking to waterfalls, bird watching and fishing excursions can all be booked through hotels or with tourist agencies. Additionally, there are elephant camps on the island (Koh Chang translates to Elephant Island), but we recommend researching treatment practices before booking.

On the Koh Chang Explorer Tour, participants embark on a journey along the coast. Top sights are the White Sand Beach Viewpoint (rated by many as the best beach in Koh Chang), temples, shrines, villages and an idyllic secret beach. Get the details!

Kayaking Koh Chang

Many of the beachfront resorts offer kayak rentals. We rented a kayak for a half day and paddled around the offshore islands…in the rain. (Did I mention we visited in Rainy Season?!) Travelers can rent kayaks on site or book a kayak online in advance .

Best Koh Chang Beach Towns

During our Koh Chang trip, we stayed in Kai Bae Beach, which we loved. However, we also visited some of the other beaches on Koh Chang.

We spent lazy days at Klong Prao Beach, White Sand Beach and Lonely Beach. A ride via songthaew (a pickup with two benches in the truck bed) cost 50 baht ($1.50 USD) per person. Note: It costs more if the truck is parked and not yet already carrying other passengers.

Travel Tips for Koh Chang, Thailand

Fisherman with colorful umbrella at Kai Bae Beach on Koh Chang, Thailand

Before you set off on your beach holiday, we have a few additional travel tips and packing hacks for your trip to Koh Chang, Thailand.

Where to Stay on Koh Chang

The Stage Boutique Hotel in Kai Bae Beach on Koh Chang, Thailand

During our visit to Koh Chang, we stayed on Kai Bae Beach at The Stage . The affordable, boutique hotel is located off the beach (but is accessible via a 5 minute walk), and has two pools and air conditioning in all rooms. They also offer a simple included breakfast and free Wi-Fi.

However, there are many Koh Chang hotels to choose from, ranging from cheap and basic to beachfront luxury. Check out these top-rated hotels (based on guest reviews) for your upcoming trip: Serenity Resort Koh Chang , The Chill Resort and Spa and Gajapuri Resort and Spa .

Before starting your search, use our tips for Booking Hotels for Cheap . Travelers can also search for Koh Chang holiday apartments on Booking.com or Airbnb .

How To Get to Koh Chang from Bangkok

Getting to Koh Chang in Thailand from Bangkok can be easy or difficult – depending on your budget. Travelers arrive by ferry to Koh Chang via Trat, the province of southeastern mainland Thailand along the border of Cambodia .

From Bangkok, Koh Chang is reached by bus or private transfer . While the bus is the much cheaper option, finding good information about the route is not easy. There is supposedly a Bangkok public bus (Government Bus 99 or 999) from Ekamai Bus Station. A more expensive tour bus/minivan departs from BKK Suvarnabhumi Airport.

However, for door-to-door service that is confirmed upon booking, we recommend the private ride with a driver. The ride should take about 5-6 hours depending on traffic.

Depending on your Thailand Itinerary , it is also possible to fly to Trat Airport and then negotiate your way to the ferry dock and on to your accommodation. You can search for the best deals on airline tickets on Skyscanner – but only after you read our advice for Finding Cheap Airfare !

We aren’t keen on driving abroad, but renting a car can often save time and money (especially when traveling with more than two people). Plus, having a car rental allows for greater discovery. Before booking a car hire, read our Tips for Saving Money on Rental Cars .

What To Pack for a Koh Chang Snorkel Trip

Okay, it’s time to talk about what to pack for your Thailand trip! First, get your FREE Packing Checklist .

Sun Protection

Take along plenty of sunscreen and consider bringing a swim shirt to wear while snorkeling to avoid exposure. Even while snorkeling in the rain, we managed to get sunburned on our backs (and we reapplied after each swim!) Also, don’t forget your favorite beach sunglasses and a hat to shade your face.

Beach Towel or Wrap

Budget snorkeling tours do not include the use of on board towels, so you will need to bring your own. Rather than packing a thick towel for your trip, bring along a versatile wrap .

Flip Flops and Swim Shoes

Flip flops are our go-to choice of footwear in Thailand, and Reef flips are my favorite! When packing for your trip, be sure to read our reviews on the Best Travel Shoes .

Underwater Camera and Waterproof Phone Case

Underwater action cameras are perfect for capturing the marine life on your snorkeling trip in Koh Chang. Pack your Go Pro (or less expensive action camera ) and don’t forget to bring a waterproof case for your phone!

Thailand Trip Insurance

If you haven’t already obtained travel insurance for your trip to Thailand, consider traveling protected with World Nomads .
