The words travel , journey , trip and voyage can easily be confused by learners of English.

I suppose it’s a good time of year to look at these words, as the spring and summer holiday seasons will soon be starting for many people.

Travel (noun)

The noun travel is a general word, meaning to move from place to place, usually over long distances.

We can say: air travel , food and travel , space travel , business travel , a travel agency .

  • Air travel is getting more expensive.
  • The magazine is a food and travel guide.

We can also say travels , which is a plural noun:

  • Where did you go on your travels?
  • Jack Kerouac wrote many books about his travels.

Travel is also a verb:

  • I travel 20 km to work every day.

Journey (noun)

A journey means moving from one place to another, especially in a vehicle. It is a single piece of travel. A journey can also be a regular thing.

Here is an example. Let’s say we go from London to Leeds then back again. That is two journeys (London to Leeds is the first journey, Leeds to London is the second journey).

We can say: a bus journey , a train journey , the journey to school , my journey to work .

Be careful with the plural: journeys NOT journies .

  • How long does your journey to work take?
  • Did you have a good journey?
  • Did you have a good travel?

Trip (noun)

A trip describes the whole process of going somewhere and coming back. (It is more than one journey.)

Once again, let’s go from London to Leeds then back again. As I said above, that is  two journeys, but it is one trip.

Some examples: a day trip , a round trip , a round-the-world trip, a boat trip and a business trip . We say go on a trip .

  • We went on a three-week trip to Scotland.
  • He’s gone on a business trip to Germany.
  • Let’s go on a trip to the mountains this summer!
  • The trip there took three hours. The journey there took three hours.

Voyage (noun)

Voyages are less common nowadays. A voyage is a very long trip, usually at sea or in space:

  • At the age of twenty-three, Sir Francis Drake made his first voyage to the New World.
  • A voyage around the world often took four or five years.

The French Bon voyage! translates into English as Have a good trip! or Have a good journey!

I hope that’s clear. Here’s a quick exercise for you to test your understanding:

voyage tour trip

Stuart Cook - January 21, 2014, 7:44 am Reply

A tour is when we visit several different places on a long trip and is usually for pleasure. A tour can also be an official visit to inspect a place, e.g. They gave the Prime Minister a tour of the new factory.

Excuse me, I put the question in Spanish without realising where you could be located. I put it again in English, excuse me.

I learnt that the correct sentence would be: ‘TRAVELLING is much faster and cheaper..’ but in the site here the answer that appear as correct is ‘TRAVEL is much faster and cheaper..’

Could you please be so kind to confirm me if it is a mistake of the system or if I was wrong and in fact in this case is more correct to say travel than travelling?

Thank you very much in advance for your reply.

Stuart Cook - January 20, 2014, 11:03 am Reply

Blanca, It’s also possible to say Travelling is much faster and cheaper . The reason travelling was not given as an option in the multiple choice quiz is that we are looking at the differences between the nouns journey, trip and travel here. I see that this may be a bit confusing, so I have changed the last question in the exercise to air travel .

Understanding the Distinction: Travel, Trip, and Journey Explained

Ever find yourself scratching your head over when to use ‘travel’, ‘trip’, or ‘journey’? Me too. In fact, these terms are commonly misused by even the most well-traveled folks among us.

Table of Contents

As an English language aficionado and travel enthusiast, I dove deep into linguistic resources to clear up this confusion once and for all. This blog will guide you through the nuances of these three words , helping you navigate your way to flawless English usage in any travel context .

Ready for departure?

Key Takeaways

  • Travel refers to going to a place, especially far away.
  • Trip involves traveling from one place to another, usually for a short period of time.
  • Journey implies traveling from one place to another without necessarily returning.
  • Proper usage of these terms is essential in effectively conveying our experiences.

Definition and Differences between Travel, Trip, and Journey

Travel is a verb that means going to a place, especially far away, while trip refers to the process of traveling from one place to another, usually for a short time. Journey, on the other hand, implies traveling from one place to another without necessarily returning.

Travel as a verb meaning to go to a place, especially far away

Travel, as a verb, emphasizes the act of moving from one location to another. This movement often involves significant distance between the two points. For instance, you might say you are traveling to Europe or Asia from America – places that are undoubtedly quite far from each other.

Notably, travel doesn’t always require a return trip; it merely notes the action of going somewhere far . Even voyages into space can be considered travel! So next time you utter “I love to travel,” note that this phrase speaks volumes about your passion for exploring distant destinations and embracing new experiences on a broader geographic scale .

Trip as the process of traveling from one place to another, usually for a short time

When we talk about a trip, we’re referring to the act of traveling from one place to another. It’s usually for a short period of time and involves moving between different locations .

Think of it as going on a vacation or taking a quick getaway. A trip can be as short as a day or extend over several days, but it generally doesn’t involve staying in one place for an extended period.

So whether you’re heading out on a road trip with friends or catching a flight to explore new cities, remember that a trip is all about the process of getting from point A to point B , enjoying the journey along the way.

Journey as traveling from one place to another, not necessarily returning

A journey is all about the experience of traveling from one place to another, without the expectation of returning . It can be a long and exciting adventure, with multiple destinations along the way.

Unlike a trip or travel, which often involves going somewhere and then coming back, a journey implies forward movement and exploration . It’s like embarking on a voyage of discovery, where you’re eager to see what lies ahead and open to new experiences.

Whether it’s backpacking through Europe or sailing around the world, a journey offers endless possibilities for exploration and self-discovery .

Common Uses and Examples of Travel, Trip, and Journey

– Travel: “I love traveling to different countries , experiencing new cultures and exploring exotic destinations.

– Trip: “We took a weekend trip to the beach, enjoying sun-kissed days and relaxing by the seaside.”

– Journey: “His journey across the desert was filled with challenges and self-discovery as he embarked on a soul-searching adventure.”

Travel: “I love to travel to different countries.”

I absolutely adore exploring different countries . Experiencing new cultures, trying unique cuisines , and immersing myself in unfamiliar landscapes is what makes travel so thrilling for me.

Whether it’s wandering through ancient ruins in Greece or hiking through the vibrant jungles of Costa Rica, I find immense joy in venturing beyond my comfort zone and discovering all that the world has to offer.

Travel opens my eyes to different perspectives and allows me to create lasting memories that I cherish forever.

Trip: “We went on a business trip to New York.”

Last week, I had the opportunity to go on a business trip to New York . It was an exciting experience that allowed me to explore the bustling city and meet with important clients . During the trip, we visited various companies , attended conferences , and even had some time to enjoy the sights and sounds of New York.

Being able to immerse myself in a different environment for a short period of time was both refreshing and educational. Overall, it was a successful trip that helped us strengthen our professional relationships and achieve our business goals.

Journey: “His journey around the world took him three years.”

I embarked on a three-year journey around the world, exploring new cultures and experiencing incredible adventures along the way. From bustling cities to remote villages, my journey allowed me to immerse myself in different landscapes and meet fascinating people from all walks of life.

It was a transformative experience that broadened my horizons and shaped my perspective on the world.

Clarifying Misuses of Travel, Trip, and Journey

Many people mistakenly use the term “travel” for short distances, but it should be reserved for going to faraway places. To understand the proper usage of these words, read on!

Incorrect uses of travel: “He traveled to the grocery store.”

Using the word “travel” to describe a short trip to the grocery store is incorrect. Travel usually refers to going to a distant place, especially far away. So, it’s important to use this term appropriately and not for everyday local trips like grocery stores.

Proper uses of the terms: “I traveled to Europe.”

I traveled to Europe for my summer vacation. It was an exciting travel experience filled with new cultures, delicious food, and breathtaking sights. The proper use of the term “travel” in this context refers to going somewhere far away , especially to a different country or continent .

In this case, I embarked on an adventure from my home country to Europe, immersing myself in each destination’s rich history and vibrant atmosphere. Traveling to Europe broadened my horizons and created memories that will last a lifetime.

Understanding the Nuances between Travel, Trip, and Journey

Understanding the Nuances between Travel, Trip, and Journey

Travel, trip, and journey may seem similar, but they each have their own nuances. Read on to delve deeper into the distinctions between these terms and how to use them correctly in your everyday conversations.

Travel focuses on the action of going to a distant place.

Travel allows us to embark on exciting journeys to faraway destinations. It is the act of physically moving from one place to another , often to distant locations . Whether it’s exploring a new country , immersing ourselves in different cultures , or experiencing thrilling adventures , travel is all about the exhilarating action of venturing beyond our comfort zones .

So pack your bags and get ready for an incredible journey filled with unforgettable experiences!

Trip emphasizes the process of traveling and staying in a place.

A trip is all about the journey itself and the experience of being in a specific place . It focuses on the process of traveling from one location to another, while also emphasizing the time spent staying in that particular place.

Whether you’re taking a short weekend trip to a nearby city or embarking on a week-long vacation, a trip is about immersing yourself in new surroundings and enjoying everything that destination has to offer.

Journey implies a longer and more significant travel experience.

When embarking on a journey, you can expect a more extensive and meaningful travel experience . Unlike a simple trip or travel, a journey often involves exploring multiple destinations or pursuing a specific purpose .

It encompasses the idea of venturing into the unknown and embracing new challenges along the way. Whether it’s an epic road trip across several countries or a spiritual pilgrimage to sacred sites, a journey offers an opportunity for personal growth and transformation .

It allows you to immerse yourself in different cultures , navigate unfamiliar terrain, and create lasting memories. So if you’re seeking an adventure that goes beyond mere transportation from point A to point B, set out on a journey that will take you further and leave an indelible mark on your soul.

Conclusion and Importance of Using the Correct Terms

Understanding the distinctions between travel , trip, and journey is crucial in accurately conveying our experiences . By using these terms correctly, we can communicate more effectively and avoid confusion .

So whether we’re embarking on a short trip or a life-changing journey , let’s remember to use the right words to describe our adventures ! Keep exploring and keep traveling!

1. What is the difference between travel, trip, and journey?

Travel refers to the act of going from one place to another, while a trip is a specific instance of traveling for a particular purpose or destination. A journey, on the other hand, implies a longer and more meaningful experience that may involve personal growth or transformation.

2. Can you give examples of each term – travel, trip, and journey?

Sure! Travel can include activities like flying to a different country or taking a road trip across states. A trip could be going on vacation to Disneyland or visiting family over the holidays. And a journey might involve backpacking through Europe for several months or embarking on a spiritual retreat.

3. Is there any overlap between these terms?

Yes, there can be some overlap between these terms depending on context. For example, someone’s “trip” may also be considered their “journey” if it involves self-discovery or exploration. Similarly, long-term travel experiences may encompass both the notions of “travel” and “journey.”

4. How does understanding the distinction between these terms help in communication?

Understanding the distinction between travel, trip, and journey helps in effective communication as it allows us to accurately describe our experiences and intentions when discussing our travels with others. Journey vs Voyage vs Tour vs Trip vs Jaunt vs Excursion vs Cruise vs Expedition vs Pilgrimage

Journey , voyage ,  tour ,  trip ,  jaunt ,  excursion ,  cruise ,  expedition ,  pilgrimage  mean travel or a passage from one place to another.

Journey, the most comprehensive term in general use, carries no particular implications of the distance, duration, destination, purpose, or mode of transportation involved.

Voyage normally implies a journey of some length over water, especially a sea or ocean, but sometimes it may indicate a journey through air or space.

Tour applies to a somewhat circular journey from place to place that ends when one reaches one’s starting point.

Trip is the preferable word when referring to a relatively short journey, especially one for business or pleasure. The term is also used in place of  journey to refer to more extensive travels.

Jaunt carries a stronger implication of casualness and informality than any of the others and is especially applicable to a short trip away from one’s home or one’s business, usually for pleasure or recreation.

Excursion applies to a brief pleasure trip, usually no more than a day in length.  Excursion is the preferred term, especially in railroad and steamship use, for a round trip at reduced rates to a point of interest (as a resort or an exposition or a metropolis). When the excursion involves a voyage of some days or weeks and, often, a sight-seeing tour with frequent stops during which the participants use the ship as their living quarters,  cruise is the usual term.

Expedition applies to a journey intended to further a definite purpose.

Pilgrimage applies primarily to an expedition to a place hallowed by religious associations but is sometimes applied also to a journey to a place of historical or sentimental association. Often it implies an arduous journey or slow and difficult passage.

voyage tour trip

Voyage /ˈvɔɪ.ɪdʒ/

I got Covid from someone in the group. For a high altitude hike like this, we should have been tested for Covid. It not like I could avoid it, we ate together in an enclosed tent.

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire (with Materuni waterfalls, coffee tour) - 6 Days

Amazing experience with a fantastic guide and great safari company. Our experience with Serengeti Adrian tours couldn't have been easier and we felt very lucky to have our guide, Abu. Abu is very knowledgeable, experienced, and an excellent spotter of wildlife. Because of Abu and his spirited drive, we were able to see all of the big 5 and many other wonderful animals. The itinerary itself was packed and gave us an opportunity to enjoy all of the different excursions in Tanzania without having to worry about the logistics. All of the places we stayed at that were selected by Serengeti African tours were wonderful with great staff themselves. In the lead up to the trip, Lucas, Safina were extremely responsive and made sure all the arrangements were correct in planning the right vacation for us.

We had a great time. Mostly the animals were amazing, which Moses and our drivers either found for us or were directed too. While that was mostly out of their control, what was in their control was well done. The food was very well done and varied. Camp was set up for us and spacious. I was a little nervous concerning the lack of protection on the parks but we had no incidents. All in all well done if a bit pricey.

I cannot say enough good things about this company. From the initial planning to the transfer back to the airport, Almighty Kilimanjaro Travel was amazing. As you plan your trek with them, they are available to answer all questions, incredibly organized and flexible with changes. Everything was on time and exactly as planned.all the rental gear is there, you can leave behind valuables and large bags for no additional charge (they are very meticulous about caring for your valuables, I was not concerned at all). Basically, everything can be accomplished at the hotel, it makes it very seamless and easy. The room are good, breakfast is included and the property is well taken care of. . The service they provided for the trek exceeded expectations. We had 6 guides and 34 porters for 10 of us. The equipment was in good shape and top of the line. The porter's equipment was also good quality. (Some of the budget companies do not take care of their porters). The food they provided was outstanding. Pancakes and eggs for breakfast, soup and chicken or beef dishes with rice, vegetables and fruit for lunch and dinner. Many condiments, peanut butter, jelly, Nutella, etc. Hot tea and even popcorn as an appetizer. They had no problem catering to special diets and that food was amazing as well. We ate in a large tent at one big table with regular chairs, a table cloth, and plates and silverware, very civil. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and perceptive. They were very proactive about trying to keep us healthy. They watched everyone pretty closely and offered assistance if they saw you starting to struggle. We were briefed everyday on what to expect for the following day. They took the time to answer all questions and always asked for input on our plan. Everyday we are woken up with hot tea brought to the tent, nice touch. Half way though some of the day hikes they would set up a tea and biscuit table in the middle of the trail where we would stop to take a break, that was a nice touch as well. Summit night is incredibly strenuous. These are the guides that you want to assist you. They will carry your pack if need be, motivate you the whole way up and down and basically take care of you any way that they can. Almighty kilimanjaro had four other groups of 30 people that started the same day as us, EVERYONE SUMMITED, all 40 people. That was impressive. We added on a four day safari and that service was top notch as well. The accommodations that they booked for us were really unbelievable, very nice. The vehicle was comfortable with Wi-Fi available and a refrigerator. The guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Couple of recommendations. Rent the private toilet. This is a game changer. Getting up in the middle of the night and having it right there was very convenient and the public ones were usually a hole in the ground, far from the camp. Bring snacks, bars, trail mix, etc. You don't need a thermos, some sites I read say to have one, not necessary. 4 in our group took Diamox, 6 did not, everyone summited, it's a personal choice. On a final note, I wrote an email with a couple of suggestions, and received an immediate response directly from the owner of Almighty Kilimanjaro. Their customer service is bar none! This group really cares about their guests and you will be in the best hands.

This was an incredibly challenging and rewarding trip. The Intrepid guides were so knowledgeable, friendly and professional. We had a fantastic group with great dynamics, the food was good, the equipment was well looked after, our porters were such hard workers and our guides knew everything there was to know about the mountain and how to best deal with the altitude and looked after us all really well. I highly recommend climbing Kili with Intrepid.

Kilimanjaro climb lemosho route 8 days Tour

Kilimanjaro climb lemosho route 8 days

The experience was simply incredible & the views from the summit - breathtaking. The team at Almighty Kilimanjaro lead by guides Jackson, Anton, and Assistant Guide, James, were outstanding. Special mentions to crew including waiters Zu & Tom, ToTo for ensuring we had a clean bathroom & toilet tent, And, the chef for his creative cooking - keeping our bellies full of delicious food everyday. Having opted for the 8 day Lemosho route, we were very pleased with our decision come Summit day. We have adjusted to the altitude enough to give everything we had for the summit 'push' - albeit in gruelling conditions. The wind and wind chill on the summit were nothing like we've ever experienced before and whilst we were well prepared in terms of gear, I suggest everyone tackling the summit to prepare for an artic climate. In hindsight, we could have done with some hand and foot warmers (even with two layers of gloves and wool socks was cold!) & a spare buff (for when our primary one froze around our faces). On summit day, we recommend not relying on your bladder for water as my bladder and the rubber tube froze completely. Fortunately, my partner was carrying water bottles (which turned to water slushies, still - better than no water!). Mt. Kilimanjaro was one of the best adventures we've had to date & it was made that much more memorable because of the amazing team at Almightly Kilimanjaro!

Kilimanjaro: Rongai Route Tour

Kilimanjaro: Rongai Route

FANTASTIC trip! Plenty of good, fresh food on our trip - share out the rest of your snacks with the porters to enjoy so they don't have to carry it up. I had nasty altitude sickness (grey in face, vomiting, stopping to rest for 3 seconds after every step) and had decided against going the whole way up, despite missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime. The guides (Onex and Mike) had enough experience to say I could make it, and they then proceeded to help me right up to the very top!! (Also helped me very quickly descend afterwards!) Our ENTIRE group made it to the top (one a bit later then the rest) thanks to the brilliant guides/porters. Onex really cares for his team and it showed, so I am 100% sure that this trek was ethically thought-out. If you do this trek, TAKE NEW/OLD JACKETS/SOCKS/GAITERS/CARIBENA CLIPS/ESPECIALLY WARM SLEEPING BAGS/MATS TO DONATE TO THE PORTERS ON THE VERY FIRST DAY (as awkward as it feels) because the average temp in Tanzania is 25*C so those starting out as porters have no reason to have purchased warm clothing prior to their career starting. Also walking poles 100% worth it because I couldn't raise my knees on their own to climb upwards on day 4 and the ability to use my arms to offload burden saved me!

Kilimanjaro Climbing Via Lemosho Route 10 Days (all accommodation and transport are included) Tour

Kilimanjaro Climbing Via Lemosho Route 10 Days (all accommodation and transport are included)

Booked an 8 day Lemosho hike up Kilimanjaro with Spider Tours. Communication was quick with Bryan. Pick up from the Arusha airport was waiting for me even though I arrived early. Hotel in Moshi was decent although the restaurant/ cafe called Dawn around the corner from the hotel had much better food. The hike was very well organized and they made sure I had the proper equipment and warm clothing. Spider tours took me to a rental store to obtain some warmer clothing that I did need for the hike. My guide Daniel was excellent and kept a good slow pace to acclimatize to the altitude. I did have 8 days of medicine for the altitude. Some people didn't and did not summit.. Support staff were properly equipped and very friendly. Food was plentiful with lots of tea and warm soup to start every meal. I highly recommend this local company Spider Tours and Safaris. They can change any itinerary to meet your needs and interests. I did finish the hike in 6 days instead of 8 days and Spider Tours did offer other tours to fill the extra days before my flight.

Serengeti Safari - (PRIVATE TRIP) Tour

  • Great Migration

Serengeti Safari - (PRIVATE TRIP)

When I first contemplated what I would experience on a safari, my thoughts went to roughing it … uncomfortable accommodations, mediocre food and long stretches of no animal sightings. Boy, was I mistaken. And I credit OneSeed for turning my expectations upside down. First of all, our guide, Saleh, was incredible. He's incredibly knowledgeable, courteous, and can spot a leopard's paw dangling from a tree from 500 yards away. I wanted just one fantastic photograph to put on my wall back home, and Saleh made sure that I got about 10. I can't say enough good things about him. Next, our accommodations were incredibly comfortable. Soft beds, luxurious blankets, and spacious quarters were waiting for us in Tarangire and Serengeti national parks and Ngornongorno Crater Conservation Area. One can never underestimate how good it feels to take a warm shower after a dusty day, and each lodge delivered. The cherry on top was falling asleep to the sounds of nearby lions and waking to the sights of giraffes and zebras parading in front of our tent camp. The food was wonderful. And we ate each morning and evening with Saleh, so we had wonderful conversations, recapped the incredible sights of the day, and planned the next day's activities. All in all, OneSeed ensured that my safari was an adventure with vivid memories that will forever fuel my imagination.

8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing - Lemosho Route Tour

8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing - Lemosho Route

8 of us ladies went on the 8 days Mount Kilimanjaro climb via Lemosho route with guides Isaac and Arnold. Isaac’s team was INCREDIBLE! All of the porters, guides, and cooks were so accommodating, they went above and beyond what would be expected for service! Every morning and evening we were brought warm water to wash up with before breakfast and dinner. That is such a treat when camping, let alone climbing a giant, cold mountain! The team would sing songs to keep our spirits up, and even have dancing parties when we got to camp! They were very considerate when it came to our dietary restrictions, and provided us with more than enough delicious food every day! The summit night is very tough, leaving at midnight to summit at 6 am. It is cold, dark, and windy. Isaac brought 4 extra team members with us to make sure we had a successful summit. They continuously sang, gave us water, warmed our hands up with their hands, and even walked arm in arm with us when we were so tired that it was difficult to keep going! They were all so genuine and lovely, we felt as if they were friends or family rather than a company. Isaac is so knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging! He is a wonderful person, and Steppe Dogs Adventures is very lucky to have him as a leader! Steppe Dogs Adventures as a company was very easy to communicate with. They were timely when it came to responding to emails, and helpful with transportation from Nairobi, (which is a little difficult to figure out if you are in a different county). They took our feedback to heart, and even helped us with transportation days after our trek as well. Frank and Daines in the main office were available on their phones at all times when we needed them, and made us feel safe and appreciative about every aspect of our trip. Thank you Steppe Dogs Adventures, that was an experience of a life time and we will definitely be back!

Climb Kili Lemosho Route 7 Day CLIMB, **Qualified Mountain Guides & Sustainability Certification**

We have just returned from the 7 day Lemosho Route organised by World Adventure Tours . I can honestly say that I have never met such a well organised Tour Company as them . I went with my Son and right from the start they were very professional making you the priority. The two guides William and Stephen could not do enough for you and would go at the pace you were happy with,as I’m 60 years and had a knee replacement then they allowed for this . The 7 day route was very challenging but was also made very enjoyable by their hard work .Thanks to their help in pace and friendly advice we both reach the summit and boy was it worth the effort .A big thank you also to the fabulous porters who without them we could not do this . I can honestly say 10 out of 10 to World Adventure Tours for giving both my son Sam and myself an experience we will not forget . I can not recommend this company enough.Thank you one and all.????????????

8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing - Machame Route Tour

8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing - Machame Route

I did my climb to Kilimanjaro in July 2015 with my guide Romeo. The whole experience was fabulous. Service and the team were highly professional and very helpful on every step. The amount and variety of food they provide is spectacular and my chef Emmanuel made the most amazing soup. They really do care about your experience and well-being on the mountain and do everything to make you comfortable. The only downside of the trip was that i was the only person in the group and it does get a bit lonely. If you are a solo traveler like me I would suggest checking with Steppe Dogs Adventures beforehand whether there are other members in your group. The great company I will recommend anywhere I go in the world:)

What people love about Tanzania Tours

The safari to Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area was excellent. The guide, Lewis, was quite knowledgeable, the accommodation better than other camp sites, and the meals very delicious. It also helped that we saw all five of the Big 5! In addition, we saw baby elephants rolling about in the mud, a pack of spotted hyena dealing with a carcass, and a male and female lion attempting to mate. Lake Manyara was a little disappointing because the heavy rains had stirred up the mud in the water and discouraged the birds from feeding there. I also felt that the guide was not as informative as Lewis. The visit to Materuni Falls was good although very muddy because of the wet weather. The food was excellent and the coffee tour very lively and entertaining.
Incredible adventure and organization. The staff, equipment, accommodation and food was spot on. Just exactly what was needed and wanted! Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, ensures everyone’s needs were accommodated. Perfect trip.

voyage tour trip

Hi! Sian here again. Now, we all love going on holiday, but these two words can cause problems!

So, a journey is a noun and refers to a single piece of travel. So, when you move from one place to another – by car, plane, train, bus...

The journey to London takes three hours by bus.

A trip is also a noun, but usually refers to more than one journey and the time you spend in a place. So if someone asks:'How was your trip ?' They are asking about the whole time you are away, not the journey.

"How was your camping trip , Sian?" "It was fun but it rained all weekend."

A trip is often quite short compared to a holiday, and we can use it in these set phrases: so you can have 'a business trip ', 'a school trip ' or 'a day trip '.

1 名词 “journey” 指 “一段旅程、旅途”,即乘坐一种交通工具从一地到另一地。它强调 “单次行程”。

2 名词 “trip” 指 “一次旅行、旅游”,其中可能包括多段行程。比如, 如果有人问:“How was your trip? (你这次旅行怎么样?)” 这里,“trip” 指 “出游的整段时间”,而非单次行程。

How was your camping trip , Sian? It was fun but it rained all weekend.

3 与 “holiday(假期)” 相比,“trip(旅行)” 的时间相对较短。包含 “trip” 的常见搭配有:

A business trip 一次商务旅行 A school trip 一次学校郊游 A day trip 一日游

Experience otherworldly beauty on an Antarctica cruise.

An expedition to Antarctica is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure for intrepid travelers who want to explore this remote destination at the bottom of the world. The landscapes are surreal, with eerily blue icebergs, towering ice-capped mountains, dramatic weather conditions that change within seconds and species of wildlife that exist nowhere else on Earth – it's hard to imagine until you've made the long journey yourself.

The fifth-largest continent is home to the largest ice sheet on the planet, the Antarctic Ice Sheet, as well as the Transantarctic Mountains, with peaks soaring more than 14,700 feet into the sky. West Antarctica has volcanoes that are part of a tectonically active area around the Pacific Ocean known as the "Ring of Fire." This incredibly diverse and magical part of the world also has the coldest temperature ever recorded at -135.8 degrees Fahrenheit in 2010.

U.S. News has compiled a selection of seven different Antarctic experiences to help you plan your bucket list adventure to the White Continent.

Atlas Ocean Voyages: 11-night Ushuaia Roundtrip

Atlas Ocean Voyages cruises kayaking in Antarctica.

Courtesy of Atlas Ocean Voyages

This 11-night expedition with Atlas is available on several dates in 2024. One highlight of the voyage is crossing the Antarctic Circle, along with four days exploring Antarctica and two days spent in the South Shetland Islands. You'll also have two days en route to Antarctica and two days on the return trip on the famed Drake Passage – also known as the "Drake Lake" (on smooth days) or the "Drake Shake" (when the seas are rough).

During your days at sea, take in all the onboard lectures and films about Antarctica, and head outside on the decks to see petrels and albatrosses soaring overhead. This is the perfect opportunity to practice your photography skills before reaching the Antarctic Peninsula, where you want to take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints.

Atlas' Jan. 14 expedition is on the line's newest ship, World Voyager. The purpose-built yacht-style vessel features a hydro-jet propulsion system that's quieter and less disruptive to the fragile ecosystem. This feature also provides the opportunity for guests to see more wildlife during up-close encounters. Pricing is all-inclusive on board the ship with free open bars; all meals, wines, spirits and craft beers; a stocked in-room minibar; all landings, Zodiac excursions and lectures; the use of kayaks, walking sticks, knee boots and binoculars; and a souvenir Atlas jacket to take home. Fares also include a one-night pre-cruise stay and private charter jet service round-trip from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, Argentina.

Aurora Expeditions: Antarctic Peninsula in Depth

Aurora offers a 14-night Antarctic intensive voyage sailing round-trip from Ushuaia on Nov. 6, 2024, aboard the 132-passenger purpose-built expedition ship Greg Mortimer. This vessel was the first passenger ship to utilize the state-of-the-art Ulstein X-BOW, which provides a smoother, quicker and more efficient transit across the ocean. The ship also incorporates many environmentally conscious features, including low energy consumption and virtual anchoring, which protects the sea floor and minimizes damage caused by traditional anchors.

Guests will find expansive observation decks and hydraulic viewing platforms for optimal wildlife viewing on board. Other highlights of the expedition are nine full days to explore the Antarctic Peninsula in nearly 24 hours of daylight at the peak of summer. During this time, you can expect to see whales arriving to feed on the plentiful krill, fur seal pups and many entertaining penguins.

Prices are mostly all-inclusive, with a one-night hotel stay before boarding the ship; all meals, snacks and complimentary nonalcoholic beverages; beer and house wine at lunch and dinner; the use of Muck Boots for the expedition; all shore excursions and Zodiac cruises; educational lectures; and more. Adventurous explorers can add on activities (at an additional cost) such as sea kayaking, snowshoeing, camping, and skiing or snowboarding. The line also offers longer 20- to 24-day expeditions that include South Georgia Island.

For an extended adventure that includes crossing the Drake Passage twice, spending up to five days in Antarctica and then landing on Cape Horn in Chile (weather permitting), consider the 25-night grand expedition cruise aboard the Hutrigruten Expeditions' MS Roald Amundsen. Additional highlights are scenic cruising in Garibaldi Fjord in Alberto de Agostini National Park to see the Garibaldi Glacier; visiting the town of Puerto Natales, the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park ; and seeing the longest Southern Hemisphere glacier outside of Antarctica (which grows by as much as 150 feet a day), the Pio XI Glacier in Bernado O'Higgins National Park. This epic adventure begins March 9, 2024, in Buenos Aires and ends in Valparaíso, Chile.

The ship for the voyage, MS Roald Amundsen, is a hybrid vessel that reduces CO2 emissions by using electrical propulsion – and it's designed specifically for use in polar waters. The vessel carries just 500 guests (to adhere to regulations for visiting Antarctica) and features all exterior cabins with Scandinavian inspired decor. Guests will also find an Explorer lounge and bar, three dining venues, the Science Center, a sauna and spa, and other amenities. Fares are mostly all-inclusive, covering a complimentary expedition jacket; the use of expedition equipment like boots and trekking poles; landing activities; most dining options; and wine, beer and soft drinks at meals.

Lindblad Expeditions – National Geographic: Journey to Antarctica: The White Continent

Lindblad Expeditions was the first company to bring citizen explorers to Antarctica in 1966, pioneering travel to this remote destination. The line's 13-night expedition to Antarctica is offered nearly 20 times throughout the summer season in 2024 on one of three ships. Depending on the ship, guests will have one evening in either Buenos Aires or Santiago, Chile , before flying to Ushuaia the next morning to embark the vessel.

With about five days to explore Antarctica, you'll have time to take in the awe-inspiring landscapes and look for seals and blue-eyed shags up close from Zodiacs. On land, watch thousands of Adélie and gentoo penguins as they playfully slide down the snow-covered hills on their bellies – one right after the other – diving headfirst into the icy waters. After the adventure, a private charter flight will return you to either Buenos Aires or Santiago before your return flight home.

The line's newest expedition vessel, National Geographic Resolution, accommodates just 138 guests – and there are two new cabins for solo cruisers . Guests on the Polar Class 5 vessel will have a National Geographic photographer and a Lindblad-National Geographic-certified photo instructor and video chronicler documenting the trip. Onboard amenities include a yoga studio, a wellness specialist, infinity-style hot tubs, two restaurants and a chef's table, and plenty of indoor and outdoor viewing areas. This ship also carries an ROV (a remotely operated vehicle) for underwater exploration and other high-tech video gear.

You can even book an overnight stay in an igloo (on a first-come, first-served basis) and spend the evening under the polar sky. Fares are mostly all-inclusive and include all onboard meals and most meals ashore; nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages; transfers; excursions; a complimentary jacket; and more.

Silversea: King George Island to King George Island (Antarctica Bridge)

Silversea's six-night Antarctica Bridge expedition takes guests round-trip by a business class flight directly to the Antarctica Peninsula, flying into King George Island from Punta Arenas, Chile. This itinerary is offered several times throughout the season for guests who don't have extensive time to travel – or are nervous about sailing the Drake Passage. Silversea 's pricing is all-inclusive, and guests can choose between door-to-door or port-to-port fares.

While the weather determines the specific itinerary in Antarctica, guests can expect to have several excursions in the Antarctic Sound and as many as nine excursions on the Antarctic Peninsula that include hiking, kayaking and scenic Zodiac cruises with the expedition team. There's also one excursion in the South Shetland Islands, where you can look for massive elephant seals. There will be an abundance of bird and animal viewing on wildlife-rich King George Island, the largest of the South Shetland Islands, which is home to Adélie, chinstrap and gentoo penguins as well as Weddell and leopard seals.

Oceanwide Expeditions and Swoop Antarctica: Quest for the Emperor Penguins of Snow Hill Island

Swoop Antarctica's 10-night adventure-filled journey takes wildlife and history enthusiasts into the ice-choked waters of the Weddell Sea, past towering tabular icebergs, in search of the emperor penguin's rookery on Snow Hill: one of the most remote penguin rookeries on the planet. The incredible itinerary also sails through the same waters where famed Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship, the Endurance, sank in 1915 – and to the rarely seen west slopes of the Antarctic Sound.

Other highlights include Zodiac and helicopter landings (weather permitting) to additional remote locales, including Seymour Island, where the Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1901 to 1904 spent a winter season; Brown Bluff, one of the most scenic places on the northern tip of the Antarctic Continent and home to a large Adélie penguin rookery; and the volcanic crater of Deception Island.

There are two sailings in November 2024 on board the 1A-class, ice-strengthened Oceanwide Expeditions' Ortelius: a 108-passenger former Russian research vessel. Fares includes all meals and nonalcoholic beverages, all Zodiac and shore excursions, educational lectures, helicopter transfers, and group transfers. Optional adventure activities, alcoholic beverages and other personal expenses are at an additional cost.

The onboard helicopter pad is one of the features of the vessel and is used on select expeditions in the Weddell and Ross seas. It's important to note that very few companies offer expeditions to the Weddell Sea that include Snow Hill Island. While Ortelius is not a luxury vessel like other ships mentioned in this list, it is a stable expedition-style ship built for these icy – and at times treacherous – waters and weather conditions.

Viking: Antarctica & South Georgia Island

Courtesy of Viking

Viking's 18-night Antarctica and South Georgia Island expedition begins with an overnight stay in Buenos Aires followed by a flight the next morning to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. The first two stops on the expedition are in the Falkland Islands, where you'll find beautiful scenery with imposing cliffs, many types of marine birds and five species of penguins. In South Georgia, watch for king penguins and seals. Then, it's on to Antarctica for days 12 through 16. Guests will have the option to reserve a spot on the Viking DNV-classed submarine for a thrilling journey into the depths of the frigid waters in Antarctica. The return sailing, by way of the Drake Passage, disembarks in Ushuaia.

In 2024, this itinerary is available Jan. 31 and again Dec. 15 on Viking Octantis. The purpose-built Polar Class 6 vessel accommodates up to 378 guests and offers many of the same venues found on Viking's ocean ships, including the Explorers' Lounge, World Café, Mamsen's, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant and the Nordic Spa. There are also expedition-specific features, such as Expedition Central, the Science Lab and – for educational lectures and briefings – the Aula theater. Viking's fares are mostly all-inclusive, with all meals and wine and beer served with lunch and dinner; 24-hour specialty teas, coffees and nonalcoholic beverages; a keepsake Viking jacket; complimentary use of the excursion gear; and more.

Expert tips on Antarctica expeditions

There are many factors to consider when planning an Antarctica expedition, including where you want to travel to, the length of the trip and whether you want to sail the famed Drake Passage twice.

To provide helpful insights and information to plan your trip, U.S. News reached out to an expert in the region, Aurora Expeditions' expedition leader, Ashley Perrin , for tips on planning your adventure to the White Continent. Perrin has degrees in both geography and oceanography from the University of Southampton. She was appointed as the first woman boating officer in Antarctica by the British Antarctic Survey in 2009, and has led multiple expeditions to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands.

Which month is best (in your opinion) to travel to Antarctica and why?

Perrin: "My favorite time to travel to Antarctica is the end of December or beginning of January, because the penguin chicks are starting to come out and you get the most wildlife spotting opportunities, with marine mammals, penguins and albatross – on top of the spectacular scenery."

What length of trip do you recommend for first-time visitors?

Perrin: "The 10- to 12-day Spirit of Antarctica or Antarctic Explorer (with Aurora Expeditions) is a fantastic introduction to the Antarctic Peninsula. If you had the additional time and opportunity, ideally you would also opt for a voyage that visits South Georgia. For many travelers, this is really the jewel in the crown of the Antarctic experience because of the incredible wildlife opportunities here."

What should you look for in an expedition ship/tour when planning a trip to Antarctica?

Perrin: "Travelers should look for a high-quality educational experience, including lectures and opportunities for Citizen Science. This is such a fascinating and important destination, and you want to ensure you can learn and take as much in as you can. A pivotal factor in this is also choosing a company that offers low passenger numbers.

"Travelers don't have enough of an understanding of the impact of this on their voyage. In the Antarctic Peninsula only 100 people are allowed on land at one time, while at some sites it is 30 to 50 people. Having smaller groups enables passengers to have more time off ship exploring and connecting with nature, and this has such a significant impact on your experience.

"If you like to be a little more active, I would also highly recommend an operator that offers activities, such as kayaking in Antarctica. This allows you to see Antarctica from a different viewpoint and the silence is amazing. You still have opportunities to do landings as well, so I think it's the best of both worlds."

Do you prefer the combination fly/sail for the Drake Passage or sailing the Drake Passage both ways?

Perrin: "I prefer to sail both ways as it's how you earn your right to get to Antarctica! You also get more opportunities to see wildlife like seabirds, and it gives you extra time to prepare for the Antarctic experience through pre-lectures and education. Travelers arrive with more of an understanding of what to expect."

Any other tips, advice or comments you'd like to share?

Perrin: "Do your research into the operator you are choosing and their different offerings – things like passenger numbers, expedition team experience and off ship activities – as these can all have a significant impact on the travel experience. There is also a big difference between traditional cruise operators and expedition operators and what travelers can expect. We ensure that our passengers are exploring and getting off the ship as much as possible.

"I would also add that it's important to do your research into the areas that you're most interested in. For example, it could be history, exploration and walking in someone's footsteps (such as Sir Ernest Shackleton), or the types of wildlife you might see. Having a deeper understanding of the history and the region really does enhance the experience once you are there."

Frequently Asked Questions

An expedition where you get off the ship and make landings on the Antarctic peninsula typically costs about $10,000 per person for a 10-night voyage. However, depending on the cruise line, the ship and dates of travel – and whether you sail or fly the Drake Passage – you could spend as much as $29,000 per person for a 12-night expedition or more. There are slightly lower prices for some expeditions, such as a few with Hurtigruten Expeditions, and you can find reduced fares and deals with lines like Atlas Ocean Voyages and Quark Expeditions. In addition, there are extended polar expeditions that range from a 14-night trip to the 94-night Pole-to-Pole Ultimate Bucket List Expedition Cruise with Hurtigruten Expeditions, which is priced at close to $48,000.

If you're not interested in getting off the ship in Antarctica to see penguins and seals up close (but no closer than 15 feet, according to the Antarctic Treaty), you can opt for a voyage on a large cruise ship that sails around the continent for a much lower cost. Just know that you won't be able to disembark at any point in Antarctica. For example, Norwegian Cruise Line has a 14-night Antarctica and South America voyage that makes a round trip from Buenos Aires, Argentina, for as low as $999 per person. You may be able to find even cheaper fares from lines such as Celebrity Cruises or Princess Cruises.

It's important to note that by the rules set forth in the Antarctic Treaty, only ships carrying 500 or less passengers are permitted to make landings on the Antarctica peninsula. The Antarctic Treaty, along with the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, has strict conservation protocols and regulates that no more than 100 passengers are allowed to go ashore at one time. The IAATO works with more than 100 Antarctica outfitters to create the guidelines and safety procedures to protect the fragile environment and wildlife in this remote part of the world.

The following cruise lines offer small ship expeditions in Antarctica with no more than 500 passengers. You can also look at tour companies – such as Abercrombie & Kent, G Adventures, Adventure Life and Swoop Antarctica – that exclusively charter ships or help navigate the decision-making process for their clients and book individual expeditions with the cruise lines.

  • Atlas Ocean Voyages
  • Aurora Expeditions
  • Hapag-Lloyd Cruises
  • Hurtigruten Expeditions
  • Lindblad Expeditions – National Geographic
  • Quark Expeditions
  • Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours
  • Seabourn Cruise Line

These larger cruise lines offer sailings around the Antarctic Peninsula, which may include scenic cruising in and around the Gerlache Strait, Elephant Island, Paradise Bay and Schollart Channel.

  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Holland America Line
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Oceania Cruises
  • Princess Cruises
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean International

The answer depends on the expedition. The majority of passengers will depart from South America in either Ushuaia, Argentina – which is also known as the "End of the World" – or Punta Arenas, Chile. Then it will take approximately two days to cross the Drake Passage to reach the Antarctic Peninsula. Some lines also offer chartered flights from Punta Arenas to Antarctica, which only take about two hours. Some passengers who have taken the flight say it can be as unnerving as sailing the Drake Passage, since weather conditions can delay the flight for up to several days where you could potentially miss the trip.

Cruises on larger ships that only sail around the Antarctic Peninsula may embark in Buenos Aires; Santiago, Chile; Puerto Williams, Chile; Rio de Janeiro; ports in Florida or New Zealand; or even the South Shetland Islands.

The expedition and cruise season to Antarctica extends from November to March, which is during the austral summer in the Southern Hemisphere. But Antarctica is still the windiest, coldest and driest continent on Earth, so weather conditions are unpredictable and can change quickly – even during the summertime. One minute the sun may be out, and the next minute it can be snowing and extremely windy and cloudy.

Visitors in November can expect temperatures between a low of 25 degrees to a high of 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The warmest temperatures are typically in January, when you'll find days ranging between 33 to 36 degrees before they start to drop again in February.

Most expedition companies provide jackets that you can take home, so you won't need to bring a heavy parka if it's given to you on board. They may also provide waterproof boots that you'll need to use for wet landings. It's best to check with your expedition line to see what's available on the ship, what you can rent or buy, and what you'll need to pack and bring with you. Due to the unpredictable weather, it's advisable to bring different types of layers.

Here are some of the items you'll want to pack:

Layers: Pack at least two top and two bottom quick-drying base layers (or more, depending on the length of your expedition) that wick moisture, such as those made of silk, wool or bamboo. It does get toasty when you're layered up and moving around ashore, so choose lightweight options that will layer easily under the rest of your clothing and keep you warm and dry. For your mid-layer top, go with a lightweight polar fleece or vest; for the bottom, quick-drying warm tights or fleece pants are a good option.

You'll also want to layer what's on your feet, starting with a wicking pair of socks made from silk or synthetic polypropylene, followed by a good pair of merino wool socks from a brand like Smartwool. Glove liners are another must, especially if your hands tend to get cold. If you can, buy insulated waterproof gloves with removable liners to save packing an extra item. You may also want to toss a few hand and foot warmers in the suitcase in case you need extra warmth. Bring a lighter pair of insulated gloves for warmer days off the ship.

And don't forget a lined wool beanie, a set of earmuffs, and a balaclava or fleece neck gaiter to keep your ears and face warm and your nose and mouth protected from the cold air and wind.

Waterproof gear: The parka and tall waterproof boots may be provided on the ship, but if they're not, you'll need to bring your own. You'll also need wind- and waterproof pants to go over your base layer and mid-layers. If they're tapered at the bottom, you should be able to tuck them into your boots. Perrin says this is one of the most important items you should purchase and pack for your expedition.

Comfy clothes and shoes for around the ship: Most people dress casual on Antarctica cruises, so bring clothes that will be comfortable for days and evenings around the ship. It can get rough when crossing the Drake Passage, so you'll want flat or low-heeled shoes for those days at sea.

Other items you'll want to pack:

  • Waterproof dry pack
  • Sea-Bands and medications for motion sickness
  • Camera and accessories with a waterproof cover
  • Hiking poles (unless the ship has them available)
  • Swimsuit (you may want to take the polar plunge!)
  • Other necessary medications
  • Hydrating lip balm and a good protective moisturizer
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Books on the history of early exploration in Antarctica and the incredible wildlife

The Best Time to Go on a Snake River Float Trip

If you are wondering what is the best time to go on a Snake River float in Jackson Hole, then you will be happy to know that spring, summer, and fall are all great times of year to go floating in Jackson Hole.

Each season offers a unique experience on the Snake River!

  • Spring is the early season for rafting, and the season falls between the months of April to June. Despite being the early season, most rafters consider spring to be one of the best times of year to raft Jackson Hole. Spring in Wyoming can be chilly, but it also presents the perfect opportunity for rafters to enjoy small groups and see the most animals during a scenic float trip in Grand Teton.
  • Summer (July & August) offers prime rafting weather in Jackson Hole. Since the temperatures hover in the low to mid-80s throughout the season, summer is the perfect time to go whitewater rafting as well as swimming. Scenic float trips are also great in the summer since you can catch cool breezes along the Snake River to keep you comfortable while you check out all of the wildlife and sights!
  • Fall tends to be a little chillier but many locals will say that it’s their favorite time of year to go on Snake River floats Jackson Hole. There is beautiful weather as well as far fewer visitors which makes for a relaxingly quiet scenic float trip, but whitewater rafting is also still an option up until October. Floating between the months of September and October also allows you to view the amazing autumn colors of the Teton National Forest right from your raft!

What to Wear on Jackson Hole Float Trips

When choosing what to wear on a Jackson Hole Float Trip, you need to consider what type of Teton float trip you will be going on.

Jackson Hole scenic float trips will be much calmer and way less wet since you will be in a secure raft on calm waters the entire time. Whereas if you were to go on a white water rafting float trip you would want to dress accordingly and be prepared to get wet during the entirety of the rafting trip.

  • Sun Protection

While floating the Grand Teton Snake River, there is little to no protection from the sun. Even if you happen to experience a cloudy day during your tour, you can get a sunburn in as little as a couple of hours while on the Grand Tetons Snake River. That being said, you should apply sunscreen before the tour and reapply sunscreen during the tour in addition to wearing sunglasses.

  • Appropriate Shoes

Whether you plan on getting in the water or not, you will still need to wear the appropriate footwear to float Snake River. Water shoes or old tennis shoes with soft soles are the best options for both scenic float trips and whitewater rafting. Pretty much all outfitters will not allow bare feet, flip flops, or Crocs!

  • Weather Appropriate Clothes

If you are going on a scenic float trip on the Snake River, then you can pretty much wear whatever you are comfortable in for the weather that day since you likely won’t be getting wet. It is recommended that you wear some layers regardless of the season that you go floating in because even during the summer the mornings can tend to be chilly.

If you plan on going on a whitewater rafting tour or know that you will get wet or go swimming on your tour, you should wear a swimsuit or quick-drying clothes. Avoid cotton, but still consider layers due to the possibility of a chilly morning or a breezy day.

  • Plan an early morning float

  • Bring snacks and water

When you float Snake River Jackson Hole, you will probably get hungry and need to refuel especially if your particular tour doesn’t provide lunch. Bring things like granola bars, fruit, and water bottles.

If you know that you’ll get wet during your float trip Tetons, you should pack a bag with a comfy change of clothes and a towel to use to dry off at the end of the float trip.

What to Know About Xi Jinping’s Trip to Europe

The Chinese president this week will be visiting France, Serbia and Hungary. His trip comes at a time of tensions with many European countries over trade and accusations of Chinese espionage.

Guards line a red carpet next to an Air China plane.

By Emma Bubola

This week, for the first time in five years, President Xi Jinping of China is visiting Europe, with stops in France, Serbia and Hungary.

Mr. Xi’s trip comes at a time of tensions with many European countries over China’s support for Russia in the face of its war in Ukraine, its trade practices and its apparent espionage activities . The trip will also test Europe’s delicate balancing act between China and the United States.

Mr. Xi hopes to head off a trade war with the European Union as frictions rise over exports of Chinese electric vehicles and diminished market access for European companies in China. Mr. Xi will also encourage President Emmanuel Macron of France to pursue greater autonomy from the United States in a bid to weaken Washington’s global dominance.

Here is what we know about Mr. Xi’s trip, which began Sunday.

What is the significance of Mr. Xi’s itinerary?

The three countries Mr. Xi will be visiting, experts say , to varying degrees embrace China’s push for a redefined global order. All have to some extent questioned America’s postwar ordering of the world, and are eager to bolster ties with Beijing.

Hungary has close ties to China and is keen to attract Chinese investments in areas like electric car and battery manufacturing as Chinese producers expand beyond Asia. Serbia, too, has warm relations with Beijing and has secured billions of dollars in Chinese investment.

Mr. Xi’s first stop is France, where Mr. Macron recently said that Europe “must never be a vassal of the United States,” and has cast France as a bridge between the “Global South” and Western powers.

Despite his courting of Beijing, Mr. Macron has said he is still closer to its ally, the United States, than to China.

“I prefer to choose my relationship with the United States, with China, rather than have it imposed on me by one of the two parties, either pushing me in one direction or pulling me in the other,” he said in an interview with The Economist magazine. But, he added: “Very clearly, we are not equidistant. We are allies of the Americans.”

Before Mr. Xi’s visit, Chinese diplomats expressed hopes that ties between France and China would be at the forefront of China’s relations with the West .

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, the E.U.’s executive branch, joined talks on Monday with Mr. Xi and Mr. Macron in Paris.

This year is also a symbolic one for China and the three countries.

It is the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France and the 75th of those with Hungary.

This year is also the 25th anniversary of the NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia, during the Kosovo war, which killed three Chinese journalists and set off angry protests at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. Chinese authorities have continued to point to the bombing as a sign of NATO aggression and an example of why Russia was justified in feeling threatened before it decided to invade Ukraine.

When was the last time Mr. Xi visited Europe?

Mr. Xi’s last European visit was in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic, which he spent hunkered down in China, leaving the country’s borders for the first time in the fall of 2022 .

The 2019 trip included a flashy ceremony in Rome to celebrate Italy’s participation in China’s Belt and Road global infrastructure project, which is aimed at expanding China’s influence abroad. France rolled out the red carpet for Mr. Xi in Paris and signed more than a dozen commercial and governmental treaties worth billions of euros, even as Mr. Macron warned that “China plays on our divisions” and that “the period of European naïveté is over.”

Mr. Xi also visited Greece , where he pledged his support to the country in its struggle with Britain to obtain the Parthenon sculptures known as the Elgin Marbles .

How is the relationship between Europe and China?

Since Mr. Xi’s last visit, there has been a widening rift in the relationship between China and much of Europe. The coronavirus pandemic , Beijing’s embrace of Russia and its repression of ethnic minorities, and a surge in Chinese exports have generated backlashes against China in many European countries.

China has quintupled car shipments to foreign markets in recent years, and the European Union has recently adopted a more confrontational tone over China’s trade practices. E.U. authorities have opened an investigation that could result in limits on Chinese solar exports, and have taken preliminary steps toward restricting trade with Chinese goods that include electric cars, wind turbines and medical devices.

Italy has also told China that it would no longer participate in its Belt and Road Initiative, and last month, six people in Europe were charged with spying for China in the span of a week, in a sign that European countries are stepping up their response to Chinese espionage.

At the same time, European nations vary in their views on how to engage with Beijing and benefit from economic opportunities there, and some are fearful of any imposition of European tariffs.

Mr. Macron and Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany also think that China’s leverage will be critical in bringing an end to the war in Ukraine.

"Big Nude Boat" offers a trip to "bare-adise" on a naked cruise from Florida

By Li Cohen

Updated on: May 2, 2024 / 8:20 AM EDT / CBS News

Like to travel light? One cruise ship soon to set sail from Florida is making sure all you need is the bare necessities – no shoes, no clothes but plenty of service.

" The Big Nude Boat " will take travelers from Miami to the Caribbean on "an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise," the website says. Setting sail from Feb. 3 through Valentine's Day 2025, the trip offers a "stress-free, clothes-free experience" during which up to 2,300 passengers can roam the ship in the nude while out at sea.

"It's our pleasure to provide you with the luxury of deciding what NOT to wear," Bare Necessities Tour and Travel says.

@cbsmornings Would you dare to set sail on a nude cruise? 🚢 Cruisebare's upcoming full-ship nude cruise, departing from Miami in February next year, is making waves. Even #TonyDokoupil is down to go. 🌊 #cruises #vacation #experience #miami #sail ♬ original sound - CBS Mornings

Passengers won't be allowed to be naked when the ship is docked, but can ditch their usual attire once they are anchored or out on the water. And when clothing is optional, standard nudist etiquette must be abided by, the website says. When sitting, nude passengers must either wear a thong or sit on a towel or some kind of fabric. And while the self-serve buffet on the pool deck is a clothes-free area, passengers must be dressed for all dining room meals – and no, bathrobes don't count.

Photos and videos will also not be permitted unless all individuals being documented give consent.

"The Big Nude Boat" is just one of the cruises offered by Bare Necessities, which says on its website that the company has been "working to break down the barriers against social nudity and make clothing-optional vacationing a viable and acceptable option for all."

"Social nudity is not a sexual activity, and we strive to dispel the misconception that it is anything but natural and beautiful," the company says. "We have made strides in the acceptance of nude vacationing and our wide range of cruise charters are a testament to our success."
