Let’s start this off with one of my favourites: Amsterdam Sloterdijk’s great Coffeeshop Boerejongens .

Here, we recommend you give Amazing Haze a go. This classic Amsterdam weed walks the line between fruity and sweet with a hint of caramel. It also has a delicious aroma and 24% THC.

As a Caramella and Amnesia Haze crossbreed, it will give you an energetic high and a real energy boost — ideal for exploring the streets of Amsterdam during the day or topping off your night.

With 60% sativa and 40% indica, Amazing Haze is ideal for those who want the best of both worlds.

The Boerejongens Sloterdijk location is luxurious, and the staff are knowledgeable and quick to help (as well as elegantly dressed). There are three Boerejongens coffeeshops in Amsterdam, so you can take your pick!

☘️ Strain: Amazing Haze 💨 Type of high: Euphoric, cerebral, relaxed, creative 📍 Where to get it: Coffeeshop Boerejongens Sloterdijk, Humberweg 2, 1043 AC Amsterdam

Coffeeshop Amsterdam is an Amsterdam classic. It’s a cool coffeeshop, and not too far away from Amsterdam Central Station either.

The strain of choice here is AK Choco Kush — a nod to the blend of the infamous AK-47 strain and the delicious White Choco strain.

In this happy family, you get some real potency that will have you feeling high fast. Meanwhile, the White Choco brings delicious chocolate aromas to the table.

It’s sweet, it’s spicy, and it’s heel lekker !

With 80% indica and 20% sativa, smoking this will make you feel chill — like you want to sink into a couch for hours on end.

photo of inside of Coffeeshop Amsterdam

If you choose to smoke it at Coffeeshop Amsterdam, you can not only enjoy the delicious weed, but also refreshing drinks and a chat or two with the great dudes behind the counter.

Around the corner here on Singel 8, you will also find their ultimate smoke lounge: Coffeeshop Amsterdam Café , where you can smoke cannabis and drink a good cocktail, beer or coffee !

☘️ Strain: AK Choco Kush 💨 Type of high: Tingly, creative, and relaxed 📍 Where to get it: Coffeeshop Amsterdam, Haarlemmerstraat 44, 1013 ES Amsterdam

A classy new coffeeshop just across Amsterdam’s IJ, Coffeeshop Noord is where you can snag some delicious Tangie Haze .

Coffeeshop-noord-amsterdam-modern-interior-with-wood-and-marble

This Sativa-dominant hybrid is known for its vibrant mix of sweet, citrusy tastes and earthy notes.

As any good Sativa should, Coffeeshop Noord’s Tangie Haze provides you with an enjoyable energetic buzz — a high perfectly suited for all your creative endeavours.

☘️ Strain: Tangie Haze 💨 Type of high: Energetic, creative 📍 Where to get it: Coffeeshop Noord, Ooievaarsweg 10, 1021 GZ Amsterdam

photoof-hand-holding-candy-kush-weed-in-amsterdam

Your next pitstop should be Coffeeshop Tweede Kamer . No, we don’t mean the House of Representatives in The Hague , but the one and only coffeeshop in Amsterdam.

This time, the choice of strain is the C5 Pioneer . This strong sativa, whose name suggests some sort of high-end electric device, will certainly get you, well, high.

photo-of-two-employees-behind-bar-at-tweede-kamer-coffeeshop-amsterdam

It’s 65% Sativa and 35% Indica and is certainly a hazy strain to consider.

C5 Pioneer has a smooth, sweet and sour taste and it will give you a strong head high, bringing up your creative spirits. Consume in moderation, as this is one of the stronger strains out there.

☘️ Strain: C5 Pioneer 💨 Type of high: Strong, creative head high 📍 Where to get it: Tweede Kamer, Heisteeg 6, 1012 WC Amsterdam

photo of gift box of weed, hash, grinder, and papers at DNA Coffeeshop Amsterdam

Last but certainly not least, we recommend Coffeeshop DNA near the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam South.

Here, our top pick would have to be the Kosher Tangie Kush . This is a fairly new strain of weed, specifically the tangerine part, as the Kosher Kush is pretty old-school.

photo-of-interior-of-cofeeshop-dna-bar-amsterdam

The nice piece of this strain is its combination of orange citrus flavours combined with a wonderful earthy aroma: smells like summer and knocked me out and over for a nice summer night — not drowsy, not paranoid, just nice and chill.

Coffeeshop DNA also sells some of the best edibles in Amsterdam and has some great ganja paraphernalia — we picked up a little grinder and a spacecake bar with pistachio flavour too.

☘️ Strain: Kosher Tangie Kush 💨 Type of high: Chill 📍 Where to get it: Coffeeshop DNA, Achillesstraat 104, 1076 RH Amsterdam

You can’t sum up all the great weed strains and coffeeshops in just one article. Nevertheless, there are some honourable mentions that you should consider smoking out.

🍋 Lemon Kush from Coffeeshop The Stud

The first honourable mention goes to Coffeeshop The Stud . Here, you can find some great Lemon Kush , a hybrid strain that is a mix between Lemon G and Afghani Kush.

This strain offers a citrus explosion with a zesty lemon flavour that’ll have your taste buds dancing. And as for the high? Prepare for a dreamy euphoria that’s perfect for relaxing after a long day.

🧀 Big Buddha Cheese from Coffeeshop Sensemillia

The second honourable mention goes to Coffeeshop Sensemillia and their Big Buddha Cheese weed — what a name, right? This strain has become a crowd favourite — even winning the 2006 Cannabis Cup in the Indica category.

It’s a bud that will tantalise your senses, tasting like a tropical island mixed with some funky cheese. Perfect for an uplifting, happy, and creative high while you look out over Osdorp Lake, where the coffeeshop is situated.

🌫️ White Choco Haze from Coffeeshop Relax

The third honourable mention is for Coffeeshop Relax . Here you’ll get the sativa White Choco Haze .

Mixed between White Choco and Mexican Haze, the flavour is melon-like with a hint of chocolate, giving you a strong creative head high.

🧙‍♀️ Green Magic from Coffeeshop BIJ

Coffeeshop BIJ , a local’s favourite just beyond Amsterdam’s rings, is home to Green Magic : a weed strain that lives up to its name.

It’s a true delight for the senses, with its vibrant green colour, earthy aroma, and subtle hints of sweetness. But it’s not just a pretty face — Green Magic is a powerhouse of cannabis goodness. Made up of a balanced blend of sativa and indica, this strain gives you a well-rounded high that’s perfect for exploring Amsterdam’s outer streets.

photo-of-hand-holding-Green-Magic-weed-strain-in-Amsterdam

🍓 Strawberry Haze from Coffeeshop Siberië

Coffeeshop Siberië has to be one of my favourite Amsterdam coffeeshops, so I couldn’t help but give it a spot here as well. There’s no question of what to order here: Strawberry Haze .

This sativa will have you feeling an uplifting, chatty, and energetic high, thanks to its sweet strawberry flavour. 🍓

⌚️ Rollex OG Kush from Coffeeshop Het Ballonnetje

Finally, we’ll give an honourable mention to Coffeeshop Het Ballonnetje ’s Rollex OG Kush . This is an Indica-dominant hybrid created from a mix of White Fire OG and Kuchi.

The flavour is complex, ranging from a skunky pine flavour with cheesy overtones. The effect is an uplifting creative buzz that borders on psychedelic, so consume responsibly.

Though my favourite weed strains are undoubtedly am-hazing (😉), your taste might be different from mine.

So, if you want to find the strain that’s perfect for you, I recommend you ask your budtender, your friendly local Amsterdam weed expert.

close-up-of-man-putting-weed-buds-on-scale-with-tongs

If you haven’t heard of a budtender, they’re like bartenders — except they sell weed.

While it might sometimes feel like you have to be a weed aficionado when walking into an Amsterdam coffeeshop, that’s not true. Amsterdam coffeeshops are used to tourists, newbies, and even weed pros asking questions.

If you’re not sure what kind of weed you want, just walk into any high-quality Amsterdam coffeeshop and ask the budtender for advice. Tell them about the high you want, and let them make a recommendation. After all, they’re the pros!

Now that you’ve secured your weed, there might be some other questions you have about smoking weed in Amsterdam. So, let’s answer them.

What’s the difference between indica or sativa weed strains?

The division between indica and sativa is probably the most well-known indicator in your navigation through the many different sorts of weed there are out there at the many Amsterdam coffeeshops.

Indicas are generally thought to give you a more relaxing body high, well-suited for indoor activities, chilling, and watching TV shows. Sativas, on the other hand, give you an uplifting, cerebral high, perfect for creative activities or more outdoorsy stuff.

INFOGRAPHICS-SHOWING-DIFFERENCE-BETWEEN-SATIVA-AND-INDICA-IN-AMSTERDAM

Now, this division is not necessarily true when it comes to effects, and it’s more of a general indicator than anything else.

There can be Sativas that get you high in a way that feels like an Indica, and the other way around. It’s best to try out different strains and see which one works for you and your needs.

It’s also important to note that there is no such thing as pure Sativa or Indica strain. All of them are a mix and contain a bit of both types. Some strains are specific hybrids that balance out the percentages.

What’s the difference between weed and hash?

Time to clarify some differences when it comes to the magical cannabis plant. Weed and hash might be different things on paper, but they are similar in the sense that they both are made from cannabis and contain THC, the psychoactive substance present that gets you high.

READ MORE | The best hash in Amsterdam: ultimate high guide for 2024

The difference is how they are produced — and the highs they give.

Block-of-best-hash-in-Amsterdam-being-cut-on-wooden-surface-with-knife.

While weed will give you more of that classical stoner buzz, hash will give you a milder high. Because of that, it’s preferred by people looking to smoke but also engage in some sort of upbeat activity.

How do you roll a joint?

Now, let’s get to what is arguably the most important aspect of smoking weed: learning how to roll a joint. You’ll need two essential ingredients: The filter tip and the paper itself.

Before beginning, make sure the side with glue is facing your way. Trust me, there is nothing worse than rolling a joint and realising you put the paper backwards.

woman-with-pink-hair-sealing-joint-with-her-lips-open-grinder-on-the-table

You’ll first need to make the filter tip. To start, make a few folds at the end of your filter, but try not to crease the paper when you’re folding it.

READ MORE | Visiting a coffeeshop in Amsterdam: etiquette, tips and tricks for first-timers

You can use as many folds as you like, but most people simply make an “M” or a “V” shape with the filter tip. Once your folds are made, just roll the remaining filter material around the folded part. And ta-da: You have a filter!

Now, put your filter at the end of your rolling paper, add your tobacco-weed mix, and roll it into your joint. It may take you a few tries and YouTube tutorials to get there, but trust me; you’ve got this!

As with any substance, bad trips can happen. The important thing is always to remember that you are feeling the way you are because you’ve simply consumed too much weed — and your trip will pass.

Before smoking, make sure you are in a comfortable, familiar, and homely setting alongside people you trust. These two elements are very important for having a good trip.

If you do decide to smoke weed and you find yourself feeling very anxious and panicked, try not to amplify that feeling further.

Ask your friends to comfort you, drink plenty of water and have some snacks. If you can, try taking a nap. The effect should subside after about two hours, so don’t worry that you’ll feel like that for a long time.

TIP: Studies have proven that taking CBD oil can counteract the feeling of being stoned .

Another important thing to consider is that beyond Sativa or Indica considerations, weed will usually amplify what you already are.

So, for example, if you are a very sociable person, smoking weed will amplify that feeling even further. If you are a naturally anxious and introspective person, weed may amplify those feelings too, in a way that could make you even more anxious.

If you’ve reached the end of this article, you should be fully equipped to embark on your Amsterdam weed journey. Enjoy it!

There are a few things you should keep in mind before going to the coffee shops in Amsterdam. The most important thing to understand is that there is a difference between a coffee shop and a koffiehuis.

Amsterdam Coffeeshop Bulldog

If you’re looking for a cup of coffee, you’ll want to visit a koffiehuis. However, visitors hoping for something more green will want to visit a coffee shop instead.

With that out of the way, here are a few additional suggestions for anyone new to the cannabis culture in Amsterdam:

  • Don’t buy too much – you can’t take it to the airport, so there’s no point in buying a lot, just get what you want for your trip.
  • No more than 5 grams – Amsterdam coffee shops won’t allow you to buy more than 5 grams each day.
  • Visit more than one coffee shop – If you’re not feeling the vibe at one location, try another shop instead!
  • Don’t get carried away – If you’re new to this, chances are it won’t take much to have a strong effect.
  • Ask questions – Before you buy anything, feel free to ask any questions you may have about the product.

Your insider 420-friendly guide to cannabis in Amsterdam by a local

August 5, 2019 by Laura Verheijke 1 Comment

Amsterdam has long been considered to be ‘The OG Stoner Hotspot’–the place to go to get high and let loose long before the decriminalization and legalization of Marijuana started sweeping the globe.

Visiting a Dutch coffeeshop is still a rite of passage for the many tourists who flock to the city every year, but it can still be pretty overwhelming. Here’s my Amsterdammer’s guide to safely experience the city’s gorgeous ganja. This local 420 guide to Amsterdam includes the best coffeeshops in Amsterdam and what you need to know about cannabis in Amsterdam before you toke up written by a former coffeeshop employee!

What you need to know about weed in Amsterdam

Amsterdam weed container with marijuana symbol with background of Amsterdam canals

Legally wise, it’s a bit of a grey area, especially when it comes to growing. Whilst sweet cannabis fumes have lingered the canals of Amsterdam since the 1960’s, it wasn’t actually decriminalized until the 70s.

Today, large scale cultivation of marijuana plants is still illegal, although an estimated 80-95% of all marijuana sold and used in The Netherlands is also cultivated within the country itself. As of April 2019, the government has been moving towards a complete legalisation of the cultivation of miss Mary Jane and to minimize criminal activity within the industry.

Editor’s note: In the Netherlands, a coffeeshop often refers to a cafe where cannabis is sold while most locals will refer to a coffee shop (US/UK usage) where you can buy coffee and cake (no cannabis) as a cafe . The space is very important.

You may be thinking, “Right, but I just want to smoke a little weed. What do I need to know?” Let’s cut to the chase; here are the golden rules:

  • Legally, coffeeshops are only allowed to sell products to Dutch residents, however this law is not enforced in Amsterdam.
  • You have to be at least 18 years old to enter a coffee shop,  buy, and consume marijuana products
  • Make sure you always have your ID on you, otherwise you may be denied service.
  • The maximum amount you are allowed to buy and have in your possession is 5 grams – the legal amount for personal use.
  • You can smoke in public. (Please be considerate of passerby’s!)
  • Smoking and rolling with tobacco is prohibited in many coffeeshops. Tobacco substitutes may be provided.
  • Be chill and civil: don’t be a nuisance! Do not cause any disturbance in or around the coffeeshops.
  • Coffeeshops close at 1 am.
  • Coffeeshops do not serve alcohol.
  • Coffeeshop do not sell hard drugs. (Hard drugs are still illegal in the Netherlands.)
  • You cannot bring cannabis with you outside of the Netherlands.

Dutch Mary Jane : Cannabis 101

Whatever your preference, Amsterdam has something for you. From the first-timer to the connoisseur, the range of goodies available is mind-blowing–with sweet to cheesy to tangy flavours, sticky hash, crystal-laden buds, jellies, dabs, pre-rolls, pipes, bongs, vapes, oils, and delicious edibles.

On average, a gram of weed or hash averages at around 10 euros, and a pre-rolled joint or space cake will cost you about 5 euros.

Indica vs Sativa

There are two main types of cannabis, ‘Indica’ and ‘sativa’. Indica has more of a body high, inducing relaxation, best suited for evenings. Sativa strains have more of a head dominant high,  stimulating the mind and providing euphoric feelings; perfect for times of creativity. Most strains are a hybrid of the two.

There are also two active components in cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (TCH ) and cannabidiol(CBD), percentages of each vary with each strain. On average Dutch grown weed has about 15% TCH and 1% CBD.

Rolled joint with cannabis with Amsterdam weed container along canals of Amsterdam!

Having worked in a coffeeshop myself. I strongly urge you to listen to your dealer–they are very knowledgeable about the varieties, potency, taste, and method of ingestion, and are there to help you achieve your perfect high.

First and foremost, make sure you’re feeling good and are in a comfortable environment with people that you trust. Decide whether you’d prefer a head, body or combination high and your chosen method, then kick back and chill out.  If you choose to have an edible, don’t underestimate how potent edibles can be. A small corner is often enough!

You will soon begin to experience sensations of relaxation, euphoria and probably some hunger pangs (aka the munchies !) Your perception of the world may alter slightly and your reaction time may be delayed.

If you’re feeling like you have melted into the couch or feeling particularly light-headed, sugar will help with a surge of energy. If you are feeling too uncomfortably high, you may want to try some CBD products to ‘neutralize’ the effects of the THC. Some people may experience some anxiety and paranoia.

It can take up to a few hours to wear off so to make sure to start slowly and take your time, let the effects ease over you and listen to how you’re feeling.  Remember, you can always consume more, not less.

If you’re traveling solo to Amsterdam or prefer to experience cannabis for the first time in a safe group setting, editor Karen recommends taking a cannabis tour in Amsterdam with a licensed tour guide . There’s one well-reviewed tour in Amsterdam that is a great introduction to cannabis in Amsterdam where a knowledgable guide will teach you what you need to know while ensuring your safety and keeping you fed!

For Regular Smokers …

As for the proper stoners, welcome to paradise! You guys should have plenty of experience to know when another bowl is one too many. That being said, there are tons of potent strains you will want to try and I would highly recommend doing some research online to ensure you get the most out of your visit, taste the most exquisite strains, and don’t end up getting too lost making your way from one coffeeshop to the next!

Tourists enjoying cannabis at one of the best coffeeshops in Amsterdam

In Amsterdam, the term ‘coffeeshop’ is the term used for cannabis dispensaries, and yes, they also serve coffee alongside their sweet sensimilla. With over 250 coffeeshops to choose from it can be tricky to choose, but after a lifetime spent in the city, I’ve collected a few favourites. Here are some of the very best and most unique shops that sell cannabis in Amsterdam you don’t want to miss out on.

The Tweede Kamer

The Tweede Kamer is one of the oldest coffeeshops around. It is small, quaint and a little hidden. It sports a lounge-style interior with classy leather and a wooden finish.

The Original Dampkring

The Original Dampkring is a lively coffeeshop, famed for being featured in Oceans 11. It is a chill, cool, creative space, with a house cat and a large authentic bar to roll on.

1e Hulp Coffeeshop has a unique and swanky interior, decorated with oriental and Arabic elements,  comfortable lounge seating and amazing Morrocan mint tea. (Note: They have a friendly cat if you’re a cat lover visiting Amsterdam .)

Coffeeshop La Tertulia

Coffeeshop La Tertulia is an organic coffeeshop which is cute and quaint with a wholesome atmosphere. It has both indoor and outdoor seating and is located in the canal district with a beautiful Van Gogh inspired outdoor mural.

Marijuana purchased in Amsterdam at an Amsterdam coffeeshop

Boergenjongen

Other Cannabis Experience s in Amsterdam

Depending on your high, your personal interests, and degree of motivation, Amsterdam has plenty to offer the toking tourist. Other weed-related things to do include visiting The Cannabis College or The Hash, Marijuana and Hemp Museum or taking a trip on The Smoke Boat .

You can also wander through the myriad of parks, alleys, and canals, check out the hidden gardens, enjoy wandering around the many classic and contemporary museums or simply relax in one of the smoke-friendly cafés and bars, such a Cafe Hill Street Blues and CoffeeShop Amsterdam Cafe. (Editor’s Note: Skip the Anne Frank House until you’re sober…) Click for a guide to the Red Light District beyond the coffeeshops!

Some last personal advice

DO try all the Dutch food when the munchies take over: stroopwafels, fries with mayo, poffertjes, cheese, and bitterballen!  For more information about these typical Dutch foods, click here.

DON’T ride a bike high (or at all!) This is not the time to try out biking. Most tourists find walking in Amsterdam in the midst of all the bikes challenging. Click for more tips for biking in Amsterdam on another day .

DON’T mix alcohol and cannabis. If you’re trying out marijuana for the first time in Amsterdam, let the cannabis work its magic on its own. Mixing can be dangerous and it can increase the likelihood that you will get sick and/or blackout. Please be careful!

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Decked in the national orange color, dancing to music, and eating orange-glazed pastries, many in the Netherlands Saturday are marking King’s Day, celebrating the birthday of their monarch who is enjoying a very slight rise in popularity as per a national poll.

As King Willem-Alexander celebrated his 57th birthday with his family in the northeastern city of Emmen, people across the country engaged in the traditional “free markets” held on that day, selling second-hand toys, books and other items. Others toured through the historic canals of the capital, Amsterdam as orange smoke from flares held aloft one boat drifted over vessels of all shapes and sizes jostling for space on a busy canal.

“Celebrating your birthday with your own family is the most beautiful thing you can experience. I’m very happy everybody is back,” Willem-Alexander told Dutch broadcaster NOS during a walkabout in Emmen, 190 kilometers (120 miles) northeast of the Dutch capital.

An annual poll published by the NOS for King’s Day showed Willem-Alexander’s popularity edging up very slightly since last year to 6.6 out of 10. His Argentine-born wife, Queen Maxima, scored 7.1 out of 10 in the poll of 1,015 people, conducted earlier this month.

The royals’ popularity took a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic after Willem-Alexander and his family went on vacation in Greece during a partial lockdown. The royals cut short their break amid national uproar and Willem-Alexander took the unusual step of issuing a video message to express his regret and contrition for the trip.

The king’s three daughters, Amalia, Alexia and Ariane have all spent time out of the country recently — Ariane has been studying in Italy while Alexia has taken a gap year to travel. The eldest and heir to the Dutch throne, Amalia, also returned ahead of the king’s birthday after being forced to leave her student accommodation in Amsterdam and move to Madrid following threats from the criminal underworld.

Amalia, 20, who is studying politics, psychology, law and economics at Amsterdam University, told NOS she was “extremely grateful to everybody who made it possible” for her to live in Spain, where she said she was able to enjoy more freedom than in the Netherlands.

But, she added: “I’m glad to be back.”
