South Africa ms1

Cape Town is the second most populated city in South Africa. It’s known for its landscapes, gardens, museums, cuisine and wine, but most importantly, it’s known for its wildlife. South Africa is a great place to see the Big Five: elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions and buffalo, as well as many species of snakes, birds and even eight different species of whales.

South Africa ms2

Referred to as “The Place of the Mountain” this Big 5 reserve also has five eco-systems. It has a moderate climate year round with rainfall in summer. The area is malaria-free and has an upper area with rock formations and grass plains, and a lower area of vegetation and wetlands.

South Africa ms3

Hanglip Mountain Lodge:

There’s never a dull moment at Hanglip Mountain Lodge! The luxury suites here are a great blend of romantic African and African baroque. There are ten luxury bedrooms, spa facilities, dining room and lounge, bar facilities, wine cellar, swimming pool, and the Hanglip fig tree outdoor venue. Every room has a private deck with views of the mountain and lounge areas with welcoming fireplaces. There are also game drives, bush walks, horseback safaris, helicopter flights, paintball; abseiling, and quad bikes.

Kruger National Park:

Imagine yourself exploring almost five million acres of protected game reserve spread out on the plains of South Africa. Here you can see the Big 5: elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards and rhinos running free out in their natural habitat. But wait! There are more than three hundred types of trees and five hundred species of birds to admire, too!

Destination Must-Do's

South Africa md1

Table Mountain:

This landmark is Africa’s most welcoming and photographed attraction and it’s no wonder why! Visitors enjoy riding to the top of the mountain by cable car where the most spectacular views can be found. The mountain is home to thousands of species of plants and flowers as well as the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. Definitely do not leave your camera behind for this trip!

South Africa md2

Featherbed Reserve (milk trees):

Located on the Knysna lagoon, there is much to see in the Featherbed Nature Reserve. You can explore the reserve riding on a 4x4 vehicle and trailer that takes visitors to key viewpoints on the reserve, or you can explore an ancient sea cave. Milk trees are extremely common here and they can grow up to six feet tall and have a spiny shrub-like look with small yellow flowers along the side.

BouldersBeach800x450

Boulders Beach:

Feel the sea breeze in your hair and the sand between your toes at Boulder’s Beach in False Bay. Aside from being a beautiful spot to lounge, swim, and picnic, it’s also the only place in the world where you can observe African Penguins in their natural habitat. A colony of these adorably furry endangered birds settled at the beach in 1982 and never left. You’ll probably want to stay a while too.

South Africa md4

Winelands Region:

South Africa has some really great wine. Visit the heart of the winelands region and take in the colorful mountains and vineyards that seem to go on for days. Don’t forget to taste some of that delicious stuff while you’re there!

One of the best parts of traveling is coming back home with souvenirs that really reflect the place you’ve just been. In South Africa you’ll find a plethora of cultural products like carvings of animals made of soap stone, ebony, or other woods; wooden masks, bowls, jewelry and chess sets; jewelry made of precious stones like diamonds and semi-precious stones such as malachite, lapis and topaz; native art paintings, murals and sculptures; safari clothing; and tie-dyed prints of animals.

What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

"We spent two wonderful weeks touring several of the best destinations in Portugal & Spain with a group of 16 people. Our guide (Fredy) was from Spain and intimately familiar with the region, including its rich history, attractions, and food/beverages. The tour was well-paced using a combinations of private vehicles (small buses and cabs), trains, and an airplane ride as well as a fair amount of walking to get around these two beautiful countries. We extended our stay in Lisbon to see more attractions and took a side trip to Fatima, Obidos, and Nazare that was also excellent. Would have liked to have a bit more time in a couple of the cities, but we'll just have to plan another trip!"

"Wow, what a trip. An awesome tour from Saigon to Hanoi under the excellent guidance of our tour leader Doan. Doan and his amazing local support team made the journey engaging, interesting, educational and worry free. Breaks were all arranged at wonderful local places where we got to see real local life. The local support team were on hand to make sure our bikes were mechanically sound at all times and we were fully fuelled on water, fresh fruit and local snacks. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to get an understanding of Vietnam and see some of its incredible history and scenery. It's a country of natural beauty offering so many different experiences with wonderfully friendly local people only too happy to help and show you how they contribute their valuable part to the local economy. See you again soon Vietnam."

South Africa Tour Selection Trips

  • South Africa is a big country, rich in attractions and activities. Allow at least a week and preferably two for your first tour – which will only whet your appetite for more.
  • South Africa train tours can be a highlight in itself. Tour companies can organize excursions on a restored steam train, Rovos Rail, travelling between Pretoria and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, as well as between Pretoria and Cape Town. Or ride the luxurious Blue Train, which rides the rails between Pretoria and Cape Town, and Pretoria and Durban.
  • Consider tours that include the world-famous annual run (from May-July) of millions of sardines along the east coast of the country in the KwaZulu-Natal region. The sardines cause a feeding frenzy that attracts thousands of sharks, dolphins, whales, birds and other ocean predators.
  • While most of South Africa is malaria-free, it is present year-round in Kruger National Park and the low-lying areas of northern KwaZulu-Natal. Travel operators can arrange safaris in many malaria-free game reserves, such as Madikwe or Pilanesberg in North West province, the Waterberg in Limpopo, or private reserves in the Eastern, Western and Northern Cape.
  • Looking for an unusual “lodging” adventure? If you’re customizing your trip, ask your travel provider to arrange an overnight stay in a cave in the Drakensberg mountains. Marble Baths Cave, Sherman’s Cave, Spare Rib Cave, Nutcracker Cave and Sleeping Beauty Cave are just some of the caves that allow such stays.
  • South Africa is known for its flora as well as its fauna – the country’s Cape Floral Region contains a fifth of the flora on the African continent. If you like viewing plant life, look for tours that include visits to gardens, forests and nature preserves.

Additional details

Getting to South Africa

Most flights into South Africa arrive in either Johannesburg or Cape Town. From there, there are connecting flights to smaller airports in the country. Alternatively, you can drive across the border if you’re visiting a neighboring country.

How to get around South Africa

South Africa is a huge country! Unless you are spending a lot of time in South Africa, or staying in a particular region, you’re better off flying between cities, if you’re trying to visit Johannesburg and Cape Town .

City driving can get busy, and drivers can be aggressive, especially in Johannesburg. If you’re visiting Joburg, using uber or public transportation is your best bet. It can be unsafe driving through the city, because of the high crime rate.

Parking is difficult to come by, but Uber is extremely affordable in South Africa. The bonus there is you don’t have to worry about navigating the busy traffic, trying to park your car, and worrying about potential crime. In Cape Town you’re safer driving (but the traffic is very bad), though there is also great public transportation.

Driving is an option for those wanting to take the garden route. For the most part, roads are well developed, and it gives you a chance to see the countryside. South Africa has such diverse landscape, it’s worth it to visit parts of the countryside.

It’s absolutely stunning. For those who are questioning if they can adjust to driving on the opposite side of the road, it’s fairly manageable. Once you get in the car, it’s easy to navigate and catch on, especially if you’re on the road with other cars.

How Much Time Should I Spend in South Africa?

There is so much to see in South Africa. One could spend several months in South Africa and only touch the surface.

Somewhere between two and three weeks is a good time frame to get familiar with the land. Especially for travelers who decide to drive parts of the country (such as the Garden Route), the trip should not be rushed.

Because of the diversity of the country, one should see at least two cities (Cape Town, Durban, and/or Pretoria). A safari is a must for trips to South Africa. Having several day tours (between 3-5) allows for more opportunity to spot all of the “Big 5”.

Again, there is no guarantee you’ll get to see all 5. Some may be questioning spending five days in the bush on a safari, but it truly is a once in a lifetime experience. Every animal sighting is magical, even if it’s the fifth or sixth time seeing a zebra on one game drive. The calmness and quiet beauty is unlike any other experience.

Other Tips for South Africa Travel

  • Use caution in South Africa. Don’t flash your money/high end items, know where you’re heading, and be mindful. Highly consider grabbing an uber or driving, especially at night, even if the distance seems walkable. You can never be too careful, and this is the place to err on the side of caution.
  • On the flipside, South Africa is an amazing place to visit, and so diverse. If you have an opportunity to hop around the country to different cities, do it! The Western Cape and Eastern Cape have diverse landscapes and you should try to see different parts of the country.
  • South African currency is the rand. Traveling, shopping, accommodation and food is all extremely affordable in South Africa.
  • South Africa is big on tipping. If you go out to eat, expect to tip. A surprise to many visitors is the tipping of parking lot security guards who watch over your car while you’re out shopping, at the beach, etc. Most tips range from 2-10 rand.
  • South Africa has three capitals: Bloemfontein (judicial capital), Cape Town (legislative capital) and Pretoria (the administrative capital).
  • There are no vaccines required to travel to South Africa, except for visitors from a country with a yellow fever endemic. Proof of the yellow fever vaccination is required upon arrival in South Africa.
  • A fun idea for getting around is joining a hop-on-hop-off tour bus. Both Johannesburg and Cape Town offers this tour option. Get dropped off right at the attractions, spend as much time as you went at said attraction, and jump back on the bus to head towards your next destination. Since many of these tour buses have an upper deck, it’s also a great way to see the city from a different point of view.

The whole ‘country of contrasts’ thing has become a bit of a cliche

But what else do you call a place where (in a three-week period) you could happily slalom between penguins waddling on the Cape and lions stalking the bushveld, cinematic coastal switchbacks and burnt Kalahari sand, the oldest wine industry outside   Europe   and cutting-edge fusion cuisine? ‘Contrast’, doesn’t really do South Africa justice. The beauty of a South Africa tour (besides the peace of mind that comes with an expert local guide) is being able to fit so much   Africa   into so little time. From the Stellenbosch winelands to Kruger , Blyde River and beyond, this is a place where you can take your   safari   with a side of espresso.

Best time to visit south africa.

South Africa is an excellent year-round destination. Winters are mild, dry and good for wildlife viewing. Summers can get very hot and humid but are a great time for visiting beaches and festivals. Spring is a great time for viewing wildflowers in the Northern and Western Cape provinces, and very little rain falls anywhere in autumn, but the days are warm and the nights cool. Overall, there’s always a good time to head to South Africa.

Culture and customs

South Africa’s culture is one of the most diverse in the world. From indigenous tribes like the Zulu, San Bushmen and Xhosa to the Afrikaners of Dutch heritage, and immigrants of British descent, visitors will be able to experience a magnificent melting pot of customs and traditions. The significant Indian and Jewish populations also add to the ethnic mix. From the proud, beaded Zulu warriors that have inhabited the land for centuries to newly arrived immigrants from   Europe   and   Asia , South Africa’s culture has been shaped by millions of people.

The cuisine is generally a combination of Indian, Dutch, English and tribal flavors and techniques, while dress can range from modern fashion in the big cities to simple traditional, tribal dress in the bush. Although South Africa has made significant inroads towards peace and reconciliation since the end of apartheid, racial tensions are sometimes evident, and it is generally best not to contribute to this in any way. Overall, most travelers will find South Africans to be welcoming, appreciative of your visit and ready to share their homeland and stories.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Foods to try in South Africa

South Africa is fast becoming one of the most interesting wine producing regions in the world. Quality has risen steeply in the past decade so if you’re visiting the Stellenbosch Wine Region, be sure to sample some fine reds, which are world-class.

With such easy access to the Indian Ocean and Southern Atlantic, South Africa boasts some of the best seafood dining experiences you’ll ever have. From an indulgent oyster platter at a Cape Town restaurant to a spicy seafood curry in Durban, the seafood here is fresh, cheap and flavorsome.

Biltong tends to divide people. Some find this preserved, spiced meat snack impossible to refuse and others simply can’t stomach it. Either way, it’s extremely popular and readily available in markets, supermarkets and shops throughout South Africa.

4. Boerewors

Another one for the meat-lovers, this coiled, spicy sausage is a South African delicacy best done on the barbecue. Flavored with coriander, cloves and nutmeg, this is a meat born from South African and Dutch traditions.

Geography and environment

South Africa showcases one of the most diverse and stunning natural environments in the world. Visitors are able to soak up golden rays on sun-drenched beaches, journey through acre upon acre of dry savannah, admire lush, green meadows, walk through tropical forest and stop to take in views of wide, ancient canyons. It’s also possible to stroll the streets of an urban city one day and meander along a dirt track passing small farms and villages the next. South Africa truly is a land of contrasts, and this begins with the landscapes and environment.

Located on the tip of Southern Africa, South Africa shares land borders with Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland. It also shares a long stretch of coastline with the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. The topography of the land changes remarkably around the country, from the lofty plateaus of the inland region to the low-lying coast and mountainous ranges of the Cape. This variance in topography makes South Africa rich in many species of flora and fauna, something that attracts many tourists and travelers from all over the world.

History and government

Early history.

The land of South Africa has been inhabited for centuries by tribes hailing from different areas of the African continent, including the San and Bantu people. Most tribes relied on hunting and gathering, but gradually were introduced to agriculture and animal husbandry over the years. From around 1200 AD, the tribal people of South Africa started to become influenced by outsiders, including Muslim traders, the Portuguese and the Dutch, who established a settlement in the mid 1600s.

The Dutch continued to dominate the country until the 1800s, when the British became interested in the Cape Colony. During this time, the native population had become increasingly dissatisfied with being marginalized and treated poorly by their European colonizers. Many native people were used as slaves on plantations and were treated brutally by their ‘employers’ and many resented losing their land, culture and traditional way of life. Further to this, the Dutch descendants (known as Boers) didn’t appreciate the arrival of the British in a territory they had inhabited for years before their arrival. This frustration and anger regularly resulted in confrontation and armed conflict between the British, Boers and Zulus, culminating in a series of wars – most notably the Boer Wars.

Recent history

More recently, South Africa has managed to overcome the Apartheid era, a time where discrimination of black people was legalized. Until 1994, black people were unable to legally own land or vote in elections. Further to this, education, healthcare, beaches and public places like cinemas were segregated. During this time, South Africa was ruled and controlled by the white minority, much to the dissatisfaction of the black population and ultimately, the world. After much international pressure and many attempts at reform, the Apartheid era was finally ended in 1994, with Nelson Mandela stepping up to lead the nation as President. Due to this challenging history, modern day South Africa has many social issues to work on and resolve, but many of its people are filled with hope and optimism. In 2010, South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup, much to the delight of its citizens and the world.

The tremendously large colony of Cape Gannet birds who live off Lamberts Bay is often photographed - and with good reason. The sight of hundreds of birds tightly packed into a small space against a backdrop of azure ocean provides a unique, snap-worthy photo subject.

9. Blyde River Canyon

This canyon is every bit as stunning as America’s Grand Canyon, yet in a different way. Lush greenery grows over most of the area and a diverse range of animal and plant life is supported within its deep cliffs and valleys. It’s difficult to take a bad photo here, as Mother Nature has kindly provided a near perfect canvas.

10. Kruger National Park

This iconic national park has some of the ‘most-photographed’ animals in the world. Visitors love capturing shots of lions hunting prey, elephants drinking at waterholes and cheetahs sleeping under trees. Mesmerizing amber sunsets and rolling savanna only add to the atmospheric magic of it all.

Highlights of South Africa

Brimming with golden beaches and glitzy nightlife, Durban is the perfect coastal city to catch some rays or sample South African cuisine in between your adventures. Try the city's famous bunny chow, take a scenic stroll along the Golden Mile promenade or learn about traditional African medicine at the Durban Muthi Market. Visit Durban on our 9 day Kruger & Coast tour, on our 22 day Kruger, Coast & Cape tour or on our 14 day Garden Route Adventure .

2. Johannesburg

Feel the buzz of urban Africa in Joburg, South Africa's largest city. Check out the cultural hotspots of Newtown, Braamfontein or Maboneng; learn about the country's sobering past at the Apartheid Museum, or venture outside the city to the Cradle of Humankind to see some of the oldest fossilized hominid remains on Earth. Explore Johannesburg on our 11 day Kruger & Cape Town Short Break or on our 18 day Explore Southern Africa tour.

3. Cape Town

Be captivated by the beautiful coast-meets-mountain landscapes of Cape Town. Hit up the city's famous Camps Bay to bask in the sun and swim in a natural rock swimming pool, hike to the top of Table Mountain for incredible views, admire the colourful buildings in Bo Kaap neighbourhood or watch life go by in one of the city's quirky cafes. Let the beauty of Cape Town overwhelm you on our 16 day Experience Southern Africa tour.

4. Stellenbosch

The Stellenbosch wine region is the place to be to sample the country's most delicious drops. Surrounded by lush orchards and rugged mountains, it's a beautiful place to soak up the scenery while enjoying a glass (or two) of the region’s world-class reds. Drink up on our 5 day Cape Town and Winelands tour.

5. Kruger National Park

Welcome to one of the largest game reserves in Southern Africa. Home to over 500 bird species, 100 species of reptile and 150 mammal species (including the Big Five and the endangered African wild dog), you have a pretty good chance of spotting some of South Africa's resident wildlife while on safari here. Go wildlife spotting on our 9 day Vic Falls to Kruger adventure.

From the provincial markets of sleepy towns, through the malls of Johannesburg and to the galleries and cafes of Cape Town, there are many options for parting with money in South Africa. From budget market souvenirs to more indulgent bespoke buys, visitors will be pleased with the variety on offer here.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. United States generally has strict customs laws.

Things to buy in South Africa

1. Zulu beads

Zulu beadwork acts as a form of communication for Zulu people but visitors are usually drawn to buy beads for their vibrancy and visual appeal. Necklaces, bracelets and head pieces are particularly popular.

2. Township art

This urban art form involves recycling common landfill items like soft drink cans, telephone wire, paper and tires, and turning them into jewelry, ornaments, key rings, bags and toys. Township art makes a unique souvenir or gift as it supports local artists and keeps excess waste out of landfill.

3. Gourmet goodies

The Cape area has loads of amazing purveyors and food producers, so this is the best place to stock up on chutneys, jams and preserves made from local mango, fig, oranges and grapes.

4. Rooibos products

This caffeine-free herbal tea has been drunk in South Africa for generations, and is a cheap souvenir option for friends and family back home. You will also be able to find rooibos skincare and beauty products too.

Festivals and events

Freedom day.

This national public holiday commemorates the anniversary of South Africa’s constitution democracy – a very important sentiment to Africans living in the post-apartheid world. Marked by military flyovers, song, dance and other entertainment, this is a time of celebration, peace and unity.

Cape Town Jazz Festival

Cape Town shines with two days of hot jazz performances from African entertainers at this very popular festival. Although many of the shows sell out well in advance, the free outdoor concert ensures no one misses out.

Knysna Oyster Festival

This annual festival held over 10 days in winter offers so much more than oysters. Sure, indulge in some oysters but don’t forget about the fun runs, marathons, wine tastings, eating competitions, live music and cooking demos.

South Africa’s parks are some of the most accessible anywhere in Africa, and it’s a real opportunity to see some of the continent’s most sought-after animals. 5 Questions About South Africa Group Safaris

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

group tour south africa

What is a good size for a South Africa group tour?

“As a general rule, smaller groups are better. That said, they’re also usually more expensive. A total group of six travelers (including you) and rarely more than eight is an ideal number. The main reason why smaller groups are better is because there’s nothing worse than looking for wildlife in a vehicle where you barely have room to move. It’s an important question to ask your tour operator: how many people will be in each vehicle when you go out on a game drive. Six is usually fine, but eight is starting to get crowded. Another reason why traveling in a big group can be a problem is that every time you stop to enjoy a wildlife encounter, there will be some who want to stay for a while, and others who want to move on quickly to what’s next. The fewer people the guide has to keep happy, the more likely you are to enjoy the safari as you’d like it to be.”

Is there a minimum age for a South Africa group safari?

“For almost all safari tours there is no minimum age. On numerous occasions, I’ve taken a trip with my young children in tow, and it has been a wonderful experience every time. Just make sure that your operator knows the age of your kids (they’ll usually ask anyway) and everything should be fine. There are two circumstances when a minimum age may come into play. The first is that some high-end, exclusive lodges and tented camps are for adults only; these places are often aimed in part at the honeymoon market. There aren’t many such places, however, so they shouldn’t greatly affect the accommodation choices for your trip. Some specific activities may have minimum-age requirements, which is usually for safety reasons. This might include water-based activities, such as white-water rafting, or walking safaris. Again, always ask your tour operator whether the activities on your itinerary are family-friendly.”

What types of vehicles can I expect?

“The two main ways for getting around while on safari are by road (or dirt track) and flying. For the most part, you’ll get from one destination to the next in a minibus or 4WD vehicle, depending on the number of people in your group. Once you’re inside a park or reserve, you’ll most often be driven around in a 4WD safari vehicle. Usually Toyotas or Land Rovers, these vehicles have open sides, a canvas roof and tiered rows of seats. You’ll feel really close to the animals in such a vehicle, while remaining completely safe (as long as you stay in the vehicle). Unless you’re covering large distances, or you need to fly into a really remote or exclusive corner of a park, reserve or concession, you’re unlikely to need to fly while on safari. If you do, expect a relatively small (six- to 20-seater) plane if you’re flying into a remote airstrip, or a small commercial plane if flying between South African cities.”

How much do South Africa group safari packages cost?

“There are so many different price packages and tours when it comes to safaris. It all depends on what kind of holiday you are hoping to enjoy, and how you answer the following questions: Will you be traveling in a small or a large group? How many days do you plan to be on safari? Are you traveling in high or low season? Will you be camping while on safari in South Africa or are you looking for a luxury travel experience? With all of this in mind, all that can be said is that the cheapest budget camping safari will start at around US$125 to US$150 per person per day, while luxury safari tours can cost four times that figure. When talking about cost, remember that it’s also really important to ask your safari operator (or any that you are considering going with) for a full list of inclusions and exclusions, so that you understand exactly what you’re paying for. Most will be more than happy to provide such clarity.”

Which animals am I likely to see?

“There is no easy answer to this question, because it all depends on where you go. If wildlife is one of the main reasons for traveling, the most important thing is to do your own research and planning: decide on the animals you’d most like to see, then find the parks where they’re easiest to see. The northeast of the country has lots of world-class parks, none more so than Kruger National Park and the reserves that surround it. It’s one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) or big cats in general, not to mention giraffe, zebra, hyena and a whole range of antelope, bird and predator species. I once saw the Big Five on a single afternoon game drive in one of the reserves in the Kruger area. For something quieter and a little more intimate, Madikwe Game Reserve is brilliant, and you might even see African wild dogs while you’re here as well. The list goes on, with so many fabulous parks all across the country.”

These drives are an opportunity to see different wildlife behaviors as the day cools down. The guides' expertise and insight enrich this experience, making each game drive unique and informative. Sundowners in the bush, watching the spectacular African sunset, is a highlight of these drives.

A very good package entails a variety of experiences widely diverse in their nature as they are geographically distinct. The Western Cape was surprisingly charming, and the highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the various safaris taken at several locations, including Kruger. Highly recommended and a good value for money.

Very comfortable pace tour, and u will get to see most of the good stuffs. It could have been shorter but at the expense of rush factor. But it's very comfortable for me. The tour guide Matt, and our driver Benny, were both very professional, with Benny also being a high average driver. Just take note of the optional tours and it's prices that you are keen to take up and prepare some cash in advance. Matt will arrange time for ATM visits occasionally though. Nice tour!

We had an amazing holiday we were always picked up on time and the staff were always helpful. Met some lovely travellers. The accommodation in Capetown was dreadful even though staff lovely. Our hotel was changed from the one we booked for and our guides agreed the Hotel cape Milner was the best and as I booked a long time ago I don’t understand why we were moved. We were only offered a small room no balcony overlooking a building site we then had to pay ourselves to upgrade. This hotel is catered for business clients the restaurant looks onto shipping crates we also realised after 3 days that we were only booked in for 4 nights not 5 but we rang rep who sorted it out . Even thouythe staff helped us out it did spoil the Capetown visit .

Beyond expectations. Tour was flawless from the airport connections to the backpackers lodges. Our guide Wendy with earthstompers was superb. They arranged our side trips for shark cage diving and skydiving as well without having any issues whatsoever. I would highly recommend this your to anyone. This trip to South Africa was a trip of a lifetime.

Another day, visit the Cullinan Diamond Mine, where the world’s largest diamond was discovered, and learn about the cutting and polishing of diamonds before exploring Pretoria, the South African capital, a city known for its jacaranda trees, monuments to South Africa’s settlement, and gorgeous government buildings.

Connect back to Johannesburg and continue to Bakubung Bush Lodge in Pilanesberg Game Reserve. Spend a full day on safari in this malaria-free park and search for the Big Five in the wild. Connect back to Johannesburg and fly onto Cape Town, the gorgeous Mother City on the Cape of Good Hope.

Arrive Johannesburg

Arrive Johannesburg – Welcome! You will be met by a Goway representative who will assist you with your private transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure, until your welcome dinner tonight at the hotel.

Johannesburg, or Jo'burg as it is known to locals, is located on the eastern plateau of South Africa known as the Highveld. Despite not being one of the country’s three capital cities, Johannesburg remains one of the most modern and prosperous cities in the country.

After the discovery of gold in the Witwatersrand in 1886, a settlement was established. When the public heard about the discovery, thousands of people headed to Johannesburg looking for fortunes. Within a century the city has been rebuilt four times, from humble beginnings as a tented camp to tin shanties, from Edwardian-style buildings to its current, modern state.

Full Day Journey To Freedom Tour

After breakfast you will have a photo stop at Mandela House, visit Hector Pieterson Museum, and Regina Mundi Church, which is the largest Roman-Catholic church in South Africa. Hector Pieterson Museum commemorates the role of the country’s students in the struggle against apartheid. The site is just blocks away from where 12-year old Hector Pieterson was shot in 1976. Enjoy lunch at Sakhumzi’s Restaurant.

After a lunch visit, the Apartheid Museum, the first of its kind, illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid. The museum is a superb example of design, space and landscape offering the international community a unique South African experience. The exhibits have been assembled and organised by a multi-disciplinary team of curators, filmmakers, historians and designers. They include provocative film footage, photographs, text panels and artefacts illustrating the events and human stories that are part of the epic saga, known as apartheid. A series of 22 individual exhibition areas takes the visitor through a dramatic emotional journey that tells a story of a state-sanctioned system based on racial discrimination and the struggle of the majority to overthrow this tyranny. For anyone wanting to understand and experience what apartheid South Africa was really like, a visit to the Apartheid Museum is fundamental. The museum is a beacon of hope showing the world how South Africa is coming to terms with its oppressive past and working towards a future that all South Africans can call their own. Return to your hotel overnight.

Full Day Cullinen Diamond & Pretoria Tour

The Cullinan Diamond Mine is the site of the World’s oldest and South Africa’s third-richest diamond mine. Premier mine opened in 1902 and together with it founded the pretty Victorian village of Cullinan. The Cullinan Mine produced the world’s largest gem-quality diamond – a massive 3106 carats uncut! This diamond was chiseled into 98 individual diamonds including the Great and Lesser Stars of Africa, the 2nd and 3rd largest polished diamonds in the World which are now set in the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom.

The tour starts with a 15-minute video before we are led into the high-security premises of the mine where we are shown the workings and machinery of the mine. We then visit the enormous open cast mine, excavated from Kimberlite rock which is now four times larger than the famous ‘Big Hole’ in Kimberley. Continue to Cullinan Diamonds where we view diamond cutting and polishing before we are invited to browse the loose diamonds and exquisite jewellery and perhaps make that special purchase

After lunch (on our own), we continue with our cultural journey of exploration through our capital, Jacaranda City, so-called for its breathtaking purple-lined streets when the jacaranda trees are in full bloom. We’re ready and set to trace South Africa’s extraordinary history via a range of imposing, intriguing museums and monuments, beginning with the legendary Voortrekker Monument, a memorial to the early settlers. We travel on to the Kruger Museum, the private residence of President Paul Kruger of the old Transvaal Republic. We’ve chosen to end this City Tour with the Union Buildings, not only an architectural icon but the site of the emotionally charged scene which played out at Nelson Mandela’s joyful inauguration as president in 1994. You’ll be standing precisely where South African history turned the corner. We then return to Johannesburg and our hotel.

Cape Town is located in the southwest corner of South Africa near the Cape of Good Hope. With its unrivalled natural beauty, Cape Town is certainly a highlight of Southern Africa. Originally intended as a supply station for Dutch ships en route to Eastern Africa, India and the Far East, by 1652, Cape Town had become the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. As time passed other settlements were created, yet the Cape Colony looked to Cape Town as its economic and cultural hub.

Full Day Cape Town & Kirstenbosch Tour

Since the depth of history as you drive past Parliament Buildings, City Hall and the Slave Lodge before stopping for a short visit to the Castle of Good Hope (optional), originally built as a maritime replenishment station and now the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa!  We hear of the brief history of District Six en route to a visit to the Company Gardens where we walk through the landscaped gardens. Learn more about the history of the Bo-Kaap and its people as we move up the cobblestoned hills to the Malay Quarter, and marvel at the ice-cream colours of the quaint Bo-Kaap homes. Trace the moves of a professional diamond cutter as he creates every girl’s dream stone with a visit to a diamond-cutting factory. After learning more about the history of diamonds and gold in South Africa, we drive past the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town Stadium, Sea Point, Clifton and Camps Bay as we make our way to Table Mountain and a visit to the summit via cableway (weather permitting)

Our day continues with an afternoon visit to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. Kirstenbosch lives up to its reputation as the most beautiful garden in Africa and one of the great botanic gardens of the world. Few gardens can match the sheer grandeur of the setting of Kirstenbosch, against the eastern slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain.

Kirstenbosch was established in 1913 to promote, conserve and display the extraordinarily rich and diverse flora of southern Africa, and was the first botanic garden in the world to be devoted to a country's indigenous flora. Kirstenbosch displays a wide variety of the unique plant life of the Cape Flora, also known as fynbos, including sugar bushes (Protea spp.), pincushions (Leucospermum spp.) and heaths (Erica spp.). Plants from all the diverse regions and biomes of southern Africa are also grown at Kirstenbosch, including a near-complete collection of cycads (Encephalartos spp.).

The Botanical Society Conservatory is a custom-built glasshouse to grow and display plants from arid regions that cannot survive outdoors. There are over 7 000 species in cultivation at Kirstenbosch, including many rare and threatened species.

Full Day Peninsula Tour

Breakfast at the hotel and head out for a full-day Peninsula tour. Embark on a spectacular journey around the Cape Peninsula taking in all the highlights and breath-taking beauty of this world-renowned Cape. An evening here begins with a djembe drumming session, followed by a hand-washing ceremony and afterwards, you will tuck into the set 3-course meal consisting of 14 ‘taster dishes. This dining experience can best be described as a taste safari that will transport you from Table Mountain to Timbuktu. This culinary experience is accompanied by unique interactive traditional entertainment.

Optional Winelands Tour (Minimum 10 Passengers)

After our late arrival in Cape Town, we will be transferred directly to our hotel in vibrant Bantry Bay on the slopes of Lion’s Head.

The President Hotel (5 nights)

Our day begins with a cable car ride to the heights of Table Mountain (weather permitting). This unique landmark rises over 1,000 metres above the city and spreads horizontally across the skyline. Following lunch at the waterfront, enjoy some leisure time to explore.

Take in the sights as we drive through the city centre and visit the Government Gardens, Bo-Kapp Malay Quarter, and St. George’s Cathedral. Dating from 1824, the church has been the pillar of the Anglican Church in South Africa and was a major centre against apartheid led by Bishop Desmond Tutu. At an additional cost, you may opt to explore Robben Island before we enjoy a welcome dinner together at Gold Restaurant.

We head south to the quaint town of Simonstown. After lunch, we will visit the penguin colony at Boulders Beach. Delight in the magnificent scenery as we drive to Cape Point, on the tip of the Cape of Good Hope.

Enjoy a guided walk through the National Botanical Garden in Kirstenbosch, a 528-hectare natural area set on the slopes of Table Mountain with over 10,000 different native flowers and plants. We head to Groot Constantia for a chocolate and wine tasting, followed by lunch.

We travel to the long-established university town of Stellenbosch, with its oak-lined streets and stately mansions. The area was first settled in 1680 and many buildings date from the late 18th century. Continue to Grand Provence Estate for a cellar tour, wine tasting and lunch. In Franschhoek, nestled in its own valley, we shall see the Huguenot Monument before reaching Montagu.

Montagu Country Hotel (1 night)

Our journey east follows the route of the early settlers over rolling farmlands and past spectacular scenery. Our travels will take us through Barrydale into Little Karoo. Following lunch, we continue to De Krans Estate where we will enjoy a glass of port wine. We then head to our hotel in the old-fashioned town of Oudtshoorn, made wealthy by the feathers of the flightless Ostrich.

Surval Olive Estate (1 night)

This morning we shall explore the fascinating Cango Caves followed by a visit to an ostrich farm to learn more about these fascinating birds, and to enjoy a lunch featuring its eggs and very lean meat. In the afternoon we descend the Outeniqua Pass and drive through the Garden Route Lakes District to the resort centre of Knysna.

Protea Knysna Quays (2 nights)

Enjoy a leisurely morning relaxing or exploring on your own. Our afternoon is highlighted by a reception at Theodora Creche, hosted by the local community, and by a visit to Birds of Eden. Enjoy a short nature walk on Robberg Nature Reserve followed by a glass of sparkling wine. We will enjoy a delicious dinner at Drydock restaurant on Knysna’s waterfront.

Departing early, we head east along the coast following the scenic route from Tsitsikamma to Port Elizabeth which is known for its sunshine and beautiful sandy beaches. From there, we fly to Durban, where we will overnight by the northern beaches.

Protea Hotel Umhlanga (1 night)

Relax this morning with opportunities to join an orientation tour of Durban City. Drive through Zululand to Lake St. Lucia, an area known for its exceptional bird life, where we will have lunch before a cruise on the lake. Continue into the land of Zulu and our delightful country inn.

Ghost Mountain Inn (2 nights)

We enjoy our first game drive in the Mkuze Game Reserve in open 4x4 vehicles, with opportunities to see a wide variety of game. Later we can relax at our resort or join an optional excursion to explore the mountainous countryside of the traditional Zulu homelands, highlighted by a visit to a Zulu compound where we will be introduced to their unique lifestyle. This evening, weather permitting, we are treated to a BBQ dinner and a presentation of Zulu war dances.

Our morning drive takes us to neighbouring Swaziland, an independent kingdom. Follow the Ezulwini Valley, known as the “Place of Heaven”, to the capital of Mbabane. Lunch is in the Ezulwini Valley. Along the way, we will visit the Swazi Market and a craft centre.

Piggs Peak Hotel (1 night)

Enjoy spectacular scenery as we drive over Piggs Peak and enter eastern Mpumalanga en route to Kruger National Park. Enjoy game viewing from our coach as we drive across the park.

Kruger Gate Hotel (2 nights)

Enjoy a full-day game drive through the heart of Kruger National Park in open game-viewing vehicles. Keep an eye out for sightings of the “Big Five” which includes elephants, buffalos, rhinos, lions and leopards. This evening, relax in our delightful lodge.

This morning we drive from the plain of Kruger to Highveld and follow along its crest for magnificent views of the Blyde River Canyon and God's Window. Enjoy the wonderful scenery along the escarpment before we continue to our hotel.

Protea Nelspruit Hotel (1 night).

Journey through the Highveld's rolling farmlands to reach Pretoria, the picturesque capital of South Africa. Explore this gracious city known for its broad avenues bordered by flowering trees and its impressive public buildings and monuments.

Fire & Ice Melrose Arch (2 nights)

Enjoy a morning drive through Johannesburg, a city created from the wealth of gold and diamonds, before a visit to the engaging Apartheid Museum. We enjoy a special lunch at Chez Alina before heading off to explore the township of Soweto, home of Bishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela.

Our flight brings us to Victoria Falls, discovered by David Livingstone in 1855. At 353ft high and over a mile wide, they are the largest falls in Africa. Enjoy a guided walk, and weather permitting, there will also be an optional helicopter ride to see the sights of the main falls, Devil’s Cataract and Danger Point.

Victoria Falls Hotel (1 night)

We drive across the border into the north of Botswana, and the gateway to Chobe National Park. Chobe, spanning 11,000sq. kilometers, offers excellent game viewing with a diverse array of wildlife, including buffalo, elephants, hippos, and lions. Relax by the pool, and enjoy a dinner under the stars, serenaded by the unique sounds of Africa.

Chobe Game Lodge (2 nights)

Spend a full day in the park with morning and afternoon excursions in open land rovers, and by boat, to view the fauna that frequent the fertile flood plains of the Zambesi. A highlight of our stay will be the visit by boat to the natural hippo pool, a short distance from the lodge.

Enjoy the amenities of our beautiful resort or join an early morning game drive before checking out after breakfast. Later today we catch our return flights to Canada.

On arrival in Toronto, we catch our continuing flights to our homes across Canada.

Touring South Africa

The need to know

Getting around

Odyssey travels by coach and occasionally uses local transport, including trains and ferries. Specifics are always outlined in your tour itinerary. South Africa has a well-developed bus network and a good road system, so getting around in South Africa is fairly easy. However, the passenger trains in South Africa are relatively slow, so perhaps avoid relying on them as a transport option.

Accommodation

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our long stay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

Tour guides

Odyssey always engages local guides with regional knowledge to ensure an authentic experience during which you can learn as much as possible about the history and culture of places you visit.

Geography, Environment & Weather

South Africa sits at the southern end of the continent of Africa and covers 1,220,813 square kilometres. South Africa has more than 290 conservation parks, and is home to nearly 300 mammal species, 860 bird species and 8,000 plant species. Physical features vary across the country, from the deserts in the west, to the highveld in the centre, and the coastal plain of the north east.

Much of the country is semi-arid and dry. While temperatures can drop below freezing in areas of high altitude, most of the country only experiences mild cool temperatures in the winter months. Temperatures can be quite high during the summer, so be sure to prepare accordingly.

World Heritage sites

South Africa has 10 listed UNESCO World Heritage sites. You can view the official list here: https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/za. Some notable sites include:

  • Robben Island, the former maximum security prison of political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela
  • iSimangaliso Wetland Park, which is made up of around 3,280 square kilometres and home to a diverse array of South African wildlife
  • Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains, which comprise 40% of the Baberton Greenstone Belt, one of the world’s oldest geological structures.

Festivals and Events

South Africa holds numerous colourful festivals and events throughout the year. The Klein Karoo National Arts Festival brings together 100,00 art lovers for a week of dancing, music, cabaret, poetry and films, and features over 200 shows across 8 days. The Cape Town Minstrels Carnival is Cape Town’s showpiece celebration for the New Year, with numerous costumed parades and competitions taking place across the city. The Joy of Jazz festival in Johannesburg is one the biggest jazz festivals in the country, and is not to be missed by any music lovers.

Eating and Drinking

Meat is an important part of the South African diet, with notable dishes including Boerewors (thick beef sausages), biltong (dried and spiced meat), and potjiekos (a stew made out of meat and mixed vegetables). One of South Africa’s most notable social traditions is to gather round for a braai, or barbecued meat. A communal way of having food, braai simply involves cooking meat on an open grill and sharing food with friends and family. South Africa’s multicultural influences shines through in dishes such as Cape Malay curry, and Bunny chow. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, try a malva pudding or a milk tart. Beer is the ocuntry’s unofficial national drink, while many fine wines are produced in the country. For something non-alcoholic, why not try rooibos (redbush tea) or mageu.

Health and Safety

In regional rural areas travel remains a positive experience for the tourist.

As of writing, smartraveller.gov.au advises a high degree of caution when travelling to South Africa particularly in the major metros. Crime is a significant problem in Urban South Africa, so pay attention to your personal security at all times.

Electrical supply

Whenever you travel overseas, it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. The standard voltage in South Africa is 230V, while the standard frequency is 50 Hz. South Africa uses the Type M electric plug, which has 3 pins in a T-shape. Be sure to have the right adapter with you before you travel.

Tour Reviews

The drumming experience and the cultural food at the Gold restaurant in Cape Town was fantastic

Participant -17

Without exception the hotels were of high standard. They were comfortable and clean and had plenty of hot water. Any problem that I had, such as not having the right electrical adapter, was solved quickly and pleasantly.

All the guides were good, but I thought Daryl in Pretoria and Johannesburg was excellent. His knowledge of South African history and his passion for his country was impressive. He took us to see places that were important in that history. He does tend to talk too much and run out of time, but he was always worth listening to.

The Victoria Falls were an outstanding treat.

Participant -16

Exceeded Expectations

THE TRIP WAS FANTASTIC.

What is the time zone for South Africa?

South Africa has a single time zone, South Africa Standard Time (UTC+2). South Africa does not observe Daylight Savings.

Is tipping customary?

If you’re on an Odyssey tour, we take care of tipping so you don’t need to give it a second thought. However, in your free time, or if travelling independently, it’s essential that you make sure you tip an appropriate amount for services. Tipping is generally practiced in the restaurants of larger cities, and is customarily done at 10% of the total bill. Hotel staff, tour guides, and coach drivers may also accept tips, as might car park and petrol station attendants.

What is internet access like?

Wifi access is available in most hotels, hostels, cafes and restaurants in major cities. However, internet coverage may be somewhat patchy out in rural or remote areas.

Can I use my mobile phone in South Africa?

Check with your cell phone provider to see whether you’re able to make calls and use data while in South Africa. Many providers will offer a daily fee that allows you to make calls and check the internet while only being charged your regular rates. However, be certain to inform your provider that you’re heading overseas, because just like a bank they can turn off your service as a result of unusual activity.

Responsible travel tips for South Africa

  • Learn at least the local greetings to break the ice. Although many locals speak English, the more you know of the native language, the greater your experience of the country will be.
  • Carry a business card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.
  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Museums and galleries are often closed on Mondays. Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Consider contacting your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.
  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of South African Rand in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.
  • Respect the local people and the wildlife! Be considerate and ask local people if they are OK with having their photos taken, be polite and courteous.

From amazing restaurants to special occasion excursions, the Mother City is one the top cities in Africa for luxury travel.

If you’re looking for a top-tier travel experience, here are some recommendations for how to stay, play, and gourmet in Cape Town.

Book A Stay At The Silo Hotel

Located in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, The Silo Hotel is one of the most exclusive places to stay in the city. The uniquely-designed property is situated in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex occupying six floors above the Zeitz Museum Of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA). Rent A Villa For Your Group In Camps Bay

Camps Bay sits on the west coast of the Cape Peninsula, attracting crowds for its beautiful beaches and mesmerizing views. Along the coast of this affluent suburb of Cape Town, you’ll find upscale seafood restaurants, relaxing cafes, and cocktail bars. Aside from its peaceful atmosphere, Camps Bay also has some of the most impressive villas for a luxury stay.

Luxury villa rentals are typically best for those who want ultra-luxury accommodations or for groups who prefer to stay together. Villas in Camps Bay currently range from $842 to $8,713 per night on AirBNB . However, you can also book directly with certain properties. These modern homes often include a private pool, hot tub, and sea and mountain views in every direction.

Dine At The World-Renowned Nobu

Located inside the One&Only Cape Town, a luxury waterfront resort, Nobu gives luxury from the minute you step out of the car. Nobu is known as the world’s most revered Japanese restaurant and a go-to spot for celebrities and notable figures. Serving Japanese-Peruvian cuisine, Nobu Cape Town is the only restaurant in the group on the African continent.

Unlike other locations around the world, Nobu Cape Town delivers a luxury dining experience at a much more affordable price. The menu is fairly extensive, with its Omakase multi-course tasting menu as one of the popular options for the full Nobu experience.

Visit The Black-Owned Wine Farm Klein Goederust

Klein Goederust is a boutique winery with origins that date back to 1905. In 2019 the Siguqa family acquired the property, making it the first and only Black-owned wine farm in the Franschhoek wine region. Inspired by the family matriarch Nomaroma Siguqa, a lifelong Cape wine farm laborer, the property’s century-old vineyard and historic buildings have since been renovated.

Today, Klein Goederust is a beautiful destination to visit while in Cape Town. Their flagship product is the Nomaroma MCC, however, they also have a delicious Chenin Blanc and two reds — a Shiraz and a Cabernet-Merlot blend.

The winery is located an hour away from Cape Town’s city center. While you can arrive via a rideshare service like Uber, it’s best to reserve a car service to ensure an easy return to the city after your day in the vineyards.

Catch Aerial Views Of Cape Town With A Helicopter Tour

Cape Town has one of the most stunning landscapes you’ll find anywhere in the world. From the citywide landmarks that are Table Mountain and Lion’s Head to the epic meeting of two oceans – the Atlantic and Indian Oceans – there’s no better way to see the city than from the sky.

Treat yourself or someone special to a helicopter ride for aerial views of the Mother City. There are several companies to choose from, with rates averaging $115 for a 15- to 30-minute ride. Longer helicopter rides are also available, including 30-minute and 60-minute options to explore more of the city.

Head To The Winelands In A Chauffeured-Driven Jeep

Getting to Cape Town’s nearby wine regions takes a bit of planning in advance. You can book a public tour or take an Uber, but when it comes to luxury, private transit is the way to go.

Jeep Tours Cape Town offers a wide variety of services from private function transfer to planned wined tours. This female-owned company provides chauffeured-driven tours of Cape Town and its surrounding areas in specially designed Jeep Wrangler vehicles. Sip your way through the wine regions of Stellenbosch or Constantia while taking in the breathtaking views of each region.

Rates for a private Jeep wine tour experience range between $150 and $180 per person, on average. Tours range from five to eight hours, depending on your tour of choice. Along with a hotel pick-up, tours include a photo stop at lookout points, wine tastings, and a charcuterie board. Get extra fancy with optional add-ons of a gourmet picnic, fine dining lunch, or helicopter fly-in on the Stellenbosch tour.

In addition to a wine farm tour, the company offers a range of tours to suit different interests. Take a dune tour or learn about the country’s history through a cultural tour. Adventure tours are also available and large groups can ride in style by reserving multiple vehicles for an epic day of exploring.

What we know about unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S.

The unauthorized immigrant population in the United States reached 10.5 million in 2021, according to new Pew Research Center estimates. That was a modest increase over 2019 but nearly identical to 2017.

A line chart showing that the number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. remained mostly stable from 2017 to 2021.

The number of unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. in 2021 remained below its peak of 12.2 million in 2007. It was about the same size as in 2004 and lower than every year from 2005 to 2015.

The new estimates do not reflect changes that have occurred since apprehensions and expulsions of migrants along the U.S.-Mexico border started increasing in March 2021 . Migrant encounters at the border have since reached historic highs .

Pew Research Center undertook this research to understand ongoing changes in the size and characteristics of the unauthorized immigrant population in the United States. The Center has published estimates of the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population for more than two decades. The estimates presented in this research are the Center’s latest, adding new and updated annual estimates for 2017 through 2021.

Center estimates of the unauthorized immigrant population use a “residual method.” It is similar to methods used by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Immigration Statistics and nongovernmental organizations, including the Center for Migration Studies and the Migration Policy Institute . Those organizations’ estimates are generally consistent with ours. Our estimates also align with official U.S. data sources, including birth records, school enrollment figures and tax data, as well as Mexican censuses and surveys.

Our “residual” method for estimating the nation’s unauthorized immigrant population includes these steps:

  • Estimate the total number of immigrants living in the country in a particular year using data from U.S. censuses and government surveys such as the American Community Survey and the Current Population Survey.
  • Estimate the number of immigrants living in the U.S. legally using official counts of immigrant and refugee admissions together with other demographic data (for example, death and out-migration rates).
  • Subtract our estimate of lawful immigrants from our estimate of the total immigrant population . This provides an initial estimate of the unauthorized immigrant population .

Our final estimate of the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population, as well as estimates for lawful immigrants, includes an upward adjustment. We do this because censuses and surveys tend to miss some people . Undercounts for immigrants, especially unauthorized immigrants, tend to be higher than for other groups. (Our 1990 estimate comes from work by Robert Warren and John Robert Warren; details can be found here .)

The term “unauthorized immigrant” reflects standard and customary usage by many academic researchers and policy analysts. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Immigration Statistics also generally uses it. The term means the same thing as undocumented immigrants, illegal immigrants and illegal aliens.

For more details on how we produced our estimates, read the Methodology section of our November 2018 report on unauthorized immigrants.

The unauthorized immigrant population includes any immigrants not in the following groups:

  • Immigrants admitted for lawful residence (i.e., green card admissions)
  • People admitted formally as refugees
  • People granted asylum
  • Former unauthorized immigrants granted legal residence under the 1985 Immigration Reform and Control Act
  • Immigrants admitted under any of categories 1-4 who have become naturalized U.S. citizens
  • Individuals admitted as lawful temporary residents under specific visa categories

Read the Methodology section of our November 2018 report on unauthorized immigrants for more details.

Pew Research Center’s estimate of unauthorized immigrants includes more than 2 million immigrants who have temporary permission to be in the United States. (Some also have permission to work in the country.) These immigrants account for about 20% of our national estimate of 10.5 million unauthorized immigrants for 2021.

Although these immigrants have permission to be in the country, they could be subject to deportation if government policy changes. Other organizations and the federal government also include these immigrants in their estimates of the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population.

Immigrants can receive temporary permission to be in the U.S. through the following ways:

Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

In 2021, there were about 500,000 unauthorized immigrants with Temporary Protected Status . This status provides protection from removal or deportation to individuals who cannot safely return to their country because of civil unrest, violence or natural disaster.

Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) is a similar program that grants protection from removal. The number of immigrants with DED is much smaller than the number with TPS.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals is a program that offers protection from deportation to individuals who were brought to the U.S. as children before June 15, 2007. As of the end of 2021, there were slightly more than 600,000 DACA beneficiaries , largely immigrants from Mexico.

Asylum applicants

Individuals who have applied for asylum but are awaiting a ruling are not legal residents yet but cannot be deported. There are two types of asylum claims, defensive and affirmative .

Defensive asylum applications are generally filed by individuals facing deportation or removal from the U.S. These are processed by the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review. At the end of 2021, there were almost 600,000 applications pending.

Affirmative asylum claims are made by individuals already in the U.S. who are not in the process of being deported or removed. These claims are handled by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). At the end of 2021, more than 400,000 applications for affirmative asylum were pending, some covering more than one applicant.

Here are key findings about how the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population changed from 2017 to 2021:

  • The most common country of birth for unauthorized immigrants is Mexico. However, the population of unauthorized immigrants from Mexico dropped by 900,000 from 2017 to 2021 , to 4.1 million.
  • There were increases in unauthorized immigrants from nearly every other region of the world – Central America, the Caribbean, South America, Asia, Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Among U.S. states, only Florida and Washington saw increases to their unauthorized immigrant populations , while California and Nevada saw decreases. In all other states, unauthorized immigrant populations were unchanged.
  • 4.6% of U.S. workers in 2021 were unauthorized immigrants , virtually identical to the share in 2017.

Trends in the U.S. immigrant population

A pie chart showing that unauthorized immigrants were 22% of the U.S. foreign-born population in 2021.

The U.S. foreign-born population was 14.1% of the nation’s population in 2021. That was very slightly higher than in the last five years but below the record high of 14.8% in 1890.

As of 2021, the nation’s 10.5 million unauthorized immigrants represented about 3% of the total U.S. population and 22% of the foreign-born population. These shares were among the lowest since the 1990s.

Between 2007 and 2021, the unauthorized immigrant population decreased by 1.75 million, or 14%.

Meanwhile, the lawful immigrant population grew by more than 8 million, a 29% increase, and the number of naturalized U.S. citizens grew by 49%. In 2021, naturalized citizens accounted for about half (49%) of all immigrants in the country.

Where unauthorized immigrants come from

Unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. come from many parts of the world, with Mexico being the most common origin country.

A line chart showing that Mexicans are no longer a majority of unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S.

The origin countries for unauthorized immigrants have changed since the population peaked in 2007, before the Great Recession slowed immigration. Here are some highlights of those changes:

The number of unauthorized immigrants from Mexico living in the U.S. (4.1 million in 2021) was the lowest since the 1990s. Mexico accounted for 39% of the nation’s unauthorized immigrants in 2021, by far the smallest share on record .

The decrease in unauthorized immigrants from Mexico reflects several factors:

  • A broader decline in migration from Mexico to the U.S.
  • Mexican immigrants to the U.S. continuing to return to Mexico
  • Expanded opportunities for lawful immigration from Mexico and other countries, especially for temporary agricultural workers.

The rest of the world

The total number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. from countries other than Mexico has grown rapidly. In 2021, this population was 6.4 million, up by 900,000 from 2017.

A bar chart showing that the U.S. unauthorized immigrant populations from most world regions grew from 2017 to 2021.

Almost every region in the world had a notable increase in the number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. from 2007 to 2021. The largest increases were from Central America (240,000) and South and East Asia (180,000).

After Mexico, the countries of origin with the largest unauthorized immigrant populations in the U.S. in 2021 were:

  • El Salvador (800,000)
  • India (725,000)
  • Guatemala (700,000)
  • Honduras (525,000)

India, Guatemala and Honduras all saw increases from 2017.

The Northern Triangle

Three Central American countries – El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala – together represented 2.0 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. in 2021, or almost 20% of the total. The unauthorized immigrant population from the Northern Triangle grew by about 250,000 from 2017 and about 700,000 from 2007.

Other origin countries

Venezuela was the country of birth for 190,000 U.S. unauthorized immigrants in 2021. This population saw particularly fast growth, from 130,000 in 2017 and 55,000 in 2007.

Among countries with the largest numbers of U.S. unauthorized immigrants, India, Brazil, Canada and former Soviet Union countries all experienced growth from 2017 to 2021.

Some origin countries with significant unauthorized immigrant populations showed no change, notably China (375,000) and the Dominican Republic (230,000).

Detailed table: Unauthorized immigrant population by region and selected country of birth (and margins of error), 1990-2021 (Excel)

U.S. states of residence of unauthorized immigrants

The unauthorized immigrant population in most U.S. states stayed steady from 2017 to 2021. However, four states saw significant changes:

  • Florida (+80,000)
  • Washington (+60,000)
  • California (-150,000)
  • Nevada (-25,000)

States with the most unauthorized immigrants

U.S. state map showing color-coded range of unauthorized immigrant population by state. Six states had 400,000 or more unauthorized immigrants in 2021: California, Texas, Florida, New York, New Jersey and Illinois.

The six states with the largest unauthorized immigrant populations in 2021 were:

  • California (1.9 million)
  • Texas (1.6 million)
  • Florida (900,000)
  • New York (600,000)
  • New Jersey (450,000)
  • Illinois (400,000)

These states have consistently had the most unauthorized immigrants since 1990 and earlier .

At the same time, the unauthorized immigrant population has become less geographically concentrated. In 2021, these six states were home to 56% of the nation’s unauthorized immigrants, down from 80% in 1990.

Detailed table: Unauthorized immigrant population for states (and margins of error), 1990-2021 (Excel)

Detailed table: Unauthorized immigrants and characteristics for states, 2021 (Excel)

Unauthorized immigrants in the labor force

A line chart showing that the number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. workforce has remained mostly steady since 2017.

The share of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. workforce was slightly less than 5% in 2021, compared with 3% of the total U.S. population.

Demographics help explain the difference: The unauthorized immigrant population includes relatively few children or elderly adults, groups that tend not to be in the labor force.

Overall, about 7.8 million unauthorized immigrants were in the U.S. labor force in 2021. That was up slightly from 2019 but smaller than every year from 2007 through 2015.

Detailed table: Unauthorized immigrants in the labor force for states, 2021 (Excel)

Here are some additional findings about unauthorized immigrants as a share of the workforce nationwide and in certain states:

  • Since 2003, unauthorized immigrants have made up 4.4% to 5.4% of all U.S. workers, a relatively narrow range.
  • Fewer than 1% of workers in Maine, Montana, Vermont and West Virginia in 2021 were unauthorized immigrants.
  • Nevada (9%) and Texas (8%) had the highest shares of unauthorized immigrants in the workforce.

South Africa Group Tours for Solo Travellers

Travel solo as part of a group tour to South Africa

why Travel solo to south africa?

Adrenaline, wildlife and wine? Combinations like that can’t be ignored and a solo trip to South Africa takes in all three…

Thanks to cosmopolitan Cape Town, rolling vineyards and of course, its world-famous wildlife – South Africa proves to be, time and again, a place where solo travellers can tick so much from their bucket lists.

In just two weeks, you can cover wine-tasting in Stellenbosch, game driving in Kruger , snorkelling in kelp forests to look for octopus, abseiling (yes, abseiling) down Table Mountain and ziplining on the Panorama Route. If you’re looking for somewhere that has it all – South Africa could be it.

Top places to visit in South Africa

There’s a rugged Atlantic charm to this city – with its jagged terrain, sloping down to smart seaside neighbourhoods, all sitting in the formidable shadow of Table Mountain. Add to that the array of world-class restaurants and stylish shops, and you’ve got a city that’s both chic and adventurous.

Stellenbosch

Expect all the charms of a university town mixed in with a world-class wine culture. Decanter has called the town the ‘home of Cape Cabernet’, thanks to its well-known production of rich, expressive wines. There’s plenty to interest hikers, too, with starry scenery to match its superlative wines.

Kruger National Park

One of the world’s best and biggest (it’s the size of Wales) wildlife reserves, all of Africa’s iconic safari species can be spotted here. Elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, hippo and zebra all share the bushveld with a whole host of smaller mammals and over 500 species of bird.

Johannesburg

South Africa’s vibrant heart is a place of cultural diversity and rapid urban renewal. With its thriving arts scene, well-established cafe culture and Soweto – the country’s most populous township – Jo’burg buzzes with energy and it’s the best place in the country for life nightlife and live music.
