It's a couple of hundred miles away, and if you were to drive directly, would probably take an absolute minimum of 4 hours each way, dependent on time/day of travel.

I think there's a tour bus you can get from Salisbury and the price includes entry into Stonehenge.

You're probably best checking on the Stonehenge website or ask for further info on the Salisbury/Wiltshire TA forum.

Oh, and it would be a very long day if you started in Manchester so it might be a good idea to spend the night in Salisbury or even London.

Thanks for the info.

manchester to stonehenge tour

You can compare all possibilities at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk

The bus service which operates between Salisbury Station and Stonehenge is The Stonehenge Tour, inclusive tickets are sold on the bus which means you don't need to bother with booking a time slot (passengers arriving by bus with an inclusive ticket get priority entrance).

http://www.thestonehengetour.info

Does that mean you are flying from Galway to London now, rather than Manchester , especially to visit Stonehenge?

Sorry to pry, you may have other reasons to go to Manchester or London.

But there are nearer airports to Stonehenge: Bristol or Bournemouth for instance Ryanair go from a number of airports in Ireland such as Knock to Bristol, there are trains from Bristol airport to Salisbury. Bus tours leave Salisbury regularly for Stonehenge from the main bus and train station.

This Stonehenge tour bus may be of use to you: http://www.thestonehengetour.info

Thank you both for the further information. I'll definitely look into the RyanAir option from Knock Airport.

@railtraveller65

Thanks for the information.

manchester to stonehenge tour

What is the best way to travel with? shud I rent a car ? take a train or a Flight ?

Like to visit central London area, and spend 1 night the if possible

Need some best advise on this trip

thank you all

' class=

Or you could get a train into London and stay in London for a couple of nights and either get one of the coach trips that include Stonehenge, or get a train to Salisbury and tourist bus out to the stones.

I will pre-warn you. You are likely to get comments about it not being worth going all that way to see Stonehenge and you'll be disappointed etc etc. I will counter that with if you combine it with other sightseeing, it makes a great day out!

But it's your choice how you want to do it. Most of us recommend not driving in London. It's expensive to do so, and with the excellent public transport systems not worth it, which is why I've suggested it as above if you did want to drive.

You could drive through some lovely scenery along the Welsh borders, and through Gloucestershire... but it's a long drive, and that 4 hours is likely to be a lot longer if there are delays, which is common.

Actually I just want to get around the city, n visit stonehenge to take some photograph, or if there is any interesting place I can visit around manchester or london to take some photograph?

So your suggestion is I take a train to London, stay couple nights there, and take a train to Salisbury and tourist bus to Stonehenge, or I might rent a car and drive to Salisbury so that I can stop at any interesting point or places on the way to Salisbury/Stonehenge right?

Thank you for your suggestions

manchester to stonehenge tour

From some advise I had, it seems getting to Stonehenge/Salisbury is closer from London rather than from manchester.

Uh, yes!! With respect, do you have a map of the UK at hand to look at? Manchester's in the North (eeh, I'm a true southerner!!) and 200 miles away, whereas from London it's only 86 miles away to the west.

I think hiring a car would be a good idea because you will be able to go at your pace and meander here, there and everywhere to explore. You could include Avebury.

There's lots to see between London and Stonehenge, although you would need to get off the motorway / A303 to see it. But what are you interested in seeing? Countryside; historic homes; nature; ancient ruins; big towns; Jane Austen etc etc. There are two main routes towards Stonehenge eg M4 or M3; different things to see around each of the routes which is why I'm asking.

Hai thank you

My interest is if there are some nice view along the way to stonehenge, to capture, I am interest on landscape photography, so if you could advise me which way I must take on the way to Salisbury/Stonehenge, it will be helpfull.

heard we can go into the inner circle of stonehenge, but need to take special tour inside the stonehenge to do that? or even capture the sunset or sunrise there, need a special permit, is it true?

See here with regards special access at Stonehenge. They get booked up quite quickly, so good luck if that's what you'd like to do. (My avatar is of a sunset at Stonehenge on a special access visit - not that it shows up very well at this size!)

http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.16465

(To the left of the page you will see a green banner with 'stone circle access'. Click on there and it will take you into all the details, times etc. You will need to contact them to find out availability)

OK. Have you got a map handy? I'd suggest heading out along the M4. Google:

Uffington Horse. This isn't easy to view per se, but if you can find it, would be quite interesting. You've also got Waylands Smithy, a neolithic burial chamber in the area.

Lambourn and Lambourn Downs

It's very 'gentle', rolling hills scenery. You won't get anything dramatic like you would in Scotland, for example, but it has its charms.

thank you for all the advise, checked the web as well, but it seem spretty complicated to take the picture from inner circle of Stonehenge, not to mention you have to accompany some kind of a letter of application if you want to take serious picture inside the inner circle.., haiyaaa.. :((

welll, is there any nice spot to visit around london, or within the driving distance, for me to visit?

Such a lake with sunrise/sunset, beaches, old building, park, etc., just incase its pretty hard to get into the inner circle of stonehenge to take a picture will the DSLR Camera because of the policy n limitation there.

best rgds'

Are you planning on publishing your photos of Stonehenge? Or going to use on a website somewhere? If your photos are for your personal use only, then there isn't a problem.

I take my digital camera with me, and I only ever write something like 'personal camera' 'personal photos' or the such like. I don't go into details and have never been asked to supply great detail.

It's a bit of an archaic system, but it's not too complicated. Phone them to check availability and get your provisional booking number. They then require you to complete that form and send it in with your booking number and payment if not sorted out over the phone. Whilst on the phone, you can just check what they need you to write. I assume you'll be taking a tripod and stuff? Should be OK. They want to know you're not taking photos for commercial use, but as long as its for your personal use, there's not a problem. If it IS for commercial use, I guess there would be a fee to pay.

Don't give up on Stonehenge so easily!!

hahaha, thank so much for the info

yup will bring tripod n stuff along, will try to ring them on this asap

is there any other interest place I should visit around london or within the not so far away driving distance other than stonehenge?

London - Manchester I'll just take a train then, as u suggested before, and so back from manchester-London too

Tku so very much for your advise

really appreciate

Tours of Winchester

The cathedral with caption 'I love Winchester'

Winchester was once the capital of England–and you discover why it’s fascinated generations of visitors when you see the fine Norman Cathedral, ancient school and quaint streets that wind their way up to the castle where ‘King Arthur's Round Table’ is on display. This is a fascinating town, with a rich history… the perfect spot for tea and cake.

Winchester Cathedral

Winchester Cathedral has been attracting pilgrims for 900 years, and contains hidden treasures including Anthony Gormley's Sound II, the Winchester Bible and Jane Austen's tomb.

Distance view of the front with bright blue sky.

Winchester Castle Great Hall

Unveil the grandeur of medieval England and tales of King Arthur at the Winchester Castle Great Hall , a captivating landmark that transcends time. This 13th-century masterpiece, the sole survivor of the once-mighty castle, stands as a testament to architectural brilliance and a stage for centuries of drama.

The main oak door to the Great Hall.

Wolvesey Castle

Not far from the cathedral are the medieval remains of Wolvesey Castle , the residence of the powerful and wealthy Bishops of Winchester in the Middle Ages. The building was one of the most important Norman palaces of its time, and the grandeur can still be felt amongst the ruins today.
