Ontario on map, about hunting in ontario.

Ontario, located in east-central Canada, is home to nearly 40 percent of the country’s population as well as its largest city, Toronto. But Ontario is a huge province with plenty of room for hunters to roam its woods and fields in search of thriving populations of deer and black bears, as well as moose and elk. Black bears are one of Ontario’s major attractions for nonresident hunters. Bears can be hunted in both spring and fall in most management units, and are usually hunted over bait. The spring bear hunt was closed for a number of years but was recently reopened to help control the large numbers of bears. Ontario also has excellent deer hunting, with an estimated 400,000 white-tailed deer in the province. Good deer hunting can be found in most regions of the province. Moose hunting has also traditionally been and important part of the Ontario hunting scene. In recent years moose populations have declined to about 90,000 animals, which is still a significant number. The best moose hunting is generally in the more remote areas of the province. Ontario also a small population of elk, but the season is restricted to Ontario resident hunters only. Upland game, including ruffed grouse and spruce grouse; turkeys; and waterfowl round out the varied hunting opportunities in Ontario. Let Your Next Hunting Adventure Begin

Camp narrows is more than just a sport fisherman’s paradise. our lodge offers fall black bear and duck hunts, as well as whitetail deer hunts. we offer guided trophy whitetail deer hunts, that are completely outfitted., whitetail deer hunting info.

If you goal is to shoot a trophy Canadian buck, here are some tips and techniques to help you deer hunting. Our deer hunts are done between Fort Frances in the Rainy River District and Dryden.

White-tailed deer in Ontario are trophies, requiring large bodies to weather the chilly climate. As a result, antler size is comparably vast. While most white-tailed bucks average 140 to 250 pounds (63 to 114 k), Ontario bucks can top 300 pounds (136 kg). Even the mild winters of recent years have contributed to buck growth. Some believe that now is simply the best opportunity to hunt deer in Ontario in the last 100 years.

Preference to track or drive white-tailed deer through farm country or through big forest can both be satisfied in Ontario. Farm-country hunters concentrate on woodlots and creek bottoms near agricultural fields. Most hunt from tree stands or ground blinds near trails, rubs, scrapes, feeding areas, or by using drives to push deer to waiting stands. Big-woods hunters use these same techniques in deer funnels and logging cuts, but also incorporate still-hunting and tracking into their bag of tricks. Incredible expanses of land and availability of game allow you to tailor your experience as you would hope.

Information for Hunters

As with any game in Ontario, you should be aware of the seasons and hunting licences required. In the case of white-tailed deer, there are some additional considerations you might want to keep in mind when planning your hunt:

  • White-tailed deer season is notoriously changeable (warmish autumnal weather one moment, sub-zero and snowing the next). The warmer you dress, the more enjoyable your hunt will be.
  • Hunters orange must be worn during open gun seasons for both white-tailed deer and moose.
  • Non-resident Ontario hunters must hunt through an outfitter.

Tom’s Hunting Tips

  • Listen to your outfitter / guides.  They have all the experience to know what and where to go in the area you are hunting. Trophy whitetail deer are numerous in our area and with patience you will be able to harvest a rugged Canadian whitetail deer.
  • We hunt old logging areas.  Either just inside the bush line or just along the edge of the cuts.  Tree stands or  ground blinds are used to sit in.  We set you up along the rub / scrape lines or along feeding areas where the does are.  At the resort we have guided deer hunts only.  There is 1 guide for every 2 hunters.    We will set you up in the morning and pick you up each evening.
  • Ontario’s deer herds are managed through a selective harvest system. During the gun season, for example, the opportunities to hunt antlerless (does and fawns) white-tailed deer are more regulated, while buck hunting remains open. At other times, the overall number of white-tailed deer tags available to hunters may vary, depending on whether conservation specialists have determined that populations should be increased, or whether they have reached a desirable point. In 2003, Ontario implemented a Chronic Wasting Disease surveillance and testing program; Chronic Wasting Disease has never been detected in Ontario deer or elk. There is no open season for hunting elk or caribou in the province.

Ontario Hunting Trips

Hunting Trips in Ontario: A Comprehensive Guide

Ontario hunting trips: a sportsman’s paradise.

There’s something almost magical about the great outdoors in Ontario, Canada. The pristine wilderness, the abundance of wildlife, and the heart-pounding thrill of the hunt all culminate in an experience that keeps hunters coming back for more. In this article, we’ll take a journey through Ontario’s diverse hunting grounds and share a few insider tips to make your next hunting trip a memorable adventure.

First off, let’s talk about Ontario’s geography. The province offers a veritable smorgasbord of landscapes, from the lush agricultural lands in the south to the sprawling boreal forests of the north. The Canadian Shield’s rugged terrain, the expansive marshlands, and the fiery colors of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region in autumn create an unparalleled backdrop for hunters seeking a genuine wilderness experience.

Ontario is home to a wide array of game species, which means that there’s always something to hunt, no matter the season. From waterfowl and upland gamebirds to moose, deer, and black bear, the opportunities are as varied as the landscapes themselves.

One of the primary draws for hunters visiting Ontario is the province’s abundant waterfowl population. The region’s numerous lakes, marshes, and water systems create the perfect environment for migrating ducks and geese. With the added bonus of wild rice beds offering ample forage, it’s no wonder that waterfowl hunters find themselves in a veritable paradise. Just imagine the thrill of witnessing a V-formation of honking Canada geese in the sky or the excitement of flushing out a group of ducks from their hiding spots among the reeds.

Ontario Moose Hunting Trips

When it comes to big game hunting, Ontario has you covered. The moose population in the northwest, specifically in Sunset Country, is among the highest in the province. These majestic creatures, with bulls weighing in at over 1,000 pounds and sporting impressive 50-inch racks, are the epitome of big game hunting. Moose hunting options range from traditional rifle hunts to bow hunts and even the nostalgic black powder hunts. Outfitters offer guided and unguided hunts, with accommodations ranging from full American Plan lodges to housekeeping cabins.

Ontario Black bear Hunts

For those seeking the thrill of tracking a stealthy predator, Ontario’s black bear population offers a unique challenge. With one of the highest black bear populations in North America, hunters have a great chance of success. Bear Outfitters in Ontario have access to Bear Management Areas (BMAs), providing guided or unguided hunts with either bows or rifles. As with moose hunting, accommodations vary to suit the preferences of the hunter.

Ontario Deer Hunts

Whitetail deer are also prevalent in Ontario, particularly in the southern part of Ontario and Sunset Country. These large-bodied deer can be found in high numbers, and hunters have the option to engage the services of a guide or venture out on their own. The success rate for deer hunters in Ontario is high, thanks to the support of experienced outfitters and the plentiful deer population.

Ontario Grouse Hunting

For those with a penchant for upland gamebirds, Ontario offers a cornucopia of opportunities. Grouse , woodcock, and snipe can be found throughout the province, while pheasants and ptarmigan inhabit the southern and northern regions, respectively. These fast-flying birds provide a challenging yet rewarding experience for hunters of all skill levels.

When planning your Ontario hunting trip, it’s essential to enlist the help of reputable outfitters who know the land, the game, and the regulations. They’ll ensure that your hunting experience is not only safe and legal but also unforgettable. Many outfitters even offer combo packages, allowing hunters to indulge in multiple types of hunts or even combine their hunting trip with a fall fishing excursion.

Ontario’s vast wilderness, varied landscapes, and diverse game species make it a premier destination for hunting enthusiasts from around the world. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a novice eager to learn the ropes, there’s a unique hunting experience waiting for you in this beautiful Canadian province.

In addition to the fantastic hunting opportunities, Ontario offers a sense of camaraderie among hunters, who can swap stories and share knowledge with fellow enthusiasts. This sense of community adds another layer to the hunting experience, creating lasting memories and friendships forged in the great outdoors.

For the eco-conscious hunter, Ontario’s commitment to sustainable hunting practices and conservation efforts ensures that the game populations remain healthy and thriving. The province’s selective harvest system and tag allocation for big game species, such as moose and black bear, contribute to maintaining a balanced ecosystem that benefits both hunters and the environment.

When you’re not in the thick of the hunt, take some time to explore Ontario’s breathtaking scenery. From shimmering lakes to towering forests, the province’s natural beauty is a treasure in its own right. Whether you’re capturing stunning photographs or simply soaking in the serenity of your surroundings, Ontario’s wilderness is sure to leave a lasting impression.

In conclusion, Ontario’s diverse landscapes, bountiful wildlife, and welcoming hunting community make it an unparalleled destination for hunting trips. From the adrenaline rush of stalking big game to the satisfaction of bagging waterfowl or upland gamebirds, Ontario offers a hunting experience that caters to all tastes and skill levels. So, gather your gear, enlist the help of an expert outfitter, and embark on the hunting adventure of a lifetime in the wilds of Ontario.

Experience The Best Hunting in Canada

Goose & duck hunting.

Eagle Lake, Ontario and the surrounding area offers some of the most overlooked waterfowl hunting in Canada. A tremendous local population of unpressured ducks and geese is supplemented throughout the season with constant waves of migrants from the north.

guided hunting trips ontario

During your Ontario hunt, you will encounter Canada Geese, Greater White-Fronted Geese, Snow/Blue Geese, Mallards, Black Ducks, Blue, and Green-Winged Teal, Wood Ducks, Pintails, and, as the season progresses, Ringbills, Wigeons, Gadwall, Buffleheads, Goldeneyes, and Bluebills will show up.

Our guides can outfit your every need with blinds, boats, decoys, and dogs. They are also expert callers. With liberal possession limits of ducks and geese, be sure to bring plenty of shells.

Eagle Lake and the Wabigoon and Eagle rivers offer an endless variety of places to hunt, from the main lake and rivers, with their bays, backwaters, and creeks, to hidden rice grass ponds and creeks in the bush. Added to all that, we have private leases with marshes, beaver ponds, and grain fields. We can offer you countless options to ensure an exciting Canadian waterfowl hunt.

Goose season opens September 1st, and duck season opens September 10th, and both run through November. The early season is a great time for Geese, Mallards, Black Ducks, Teal, and Wood Ducks over decoys on our private leases, as well as the Eagle and Wabigoon rivers and the many backwaters of the main lake.

We will take you to where the action is peaking. With the diversity in water and land, we can hunt waterfowl all day by simply making a move between morning and evening flights and to feeding or resting areas or jump shooting.

Upland Bird Hunting

Excellent populations of Ruffed Grouse, beautiful Spruce Grouse, and Sharp-tailed Grouse are available on the same leases we use for waterfowl shoots. There are also hundreds of miles of logging roads, hunting trails, and clear cuts in the area for an afternoon or all-day hunts.

These are generally not the spooky birds you are used to back home. There is no need to get into thick brush if you don’t want to. It is a very relaxing hunt with plenty of close-range shots along the edge of fields or clearings, logging roads, and clear cuts.

Liberal possession limits and bountiful hunting for some of the most exciting and delicious upland game birds make for a great fall trip.

Cast and Blast Combos & Options

We can also combine morning and evening waterfowl shoots with midday grouse hunts and/or fishing to make an exciting and diversified experience.

September and October are renowned for trophy fishing on Eagle Lake for world-class muskies, big walleyes and northern pike, and exciting opportunities for big smallmouth bass and lake trout.

You won’t soon forget a day that begins with smoking barrels as Canadians and Greenheads come pouring into your spread, and then ends with you casting for giant muskies and walleyes during the prime trophy time of the season.

If fishing isn’t your bag, sandwich grouse hunting, predator calling, and helping guides scout for the upcoming deer hunts in between morning and evening waterfowl shoots. Either way, it’s an exciting and action-packed way to spend a beautiful fall hunting trip and we can be sure to keep you busy.

4 of the Best Hunting Trips in Ontario

guided hunting trips ontario

Book your next Canadian hunting trip in Sunset Country, you won't be disappointed!

Sunset Country consists mostly of the boreal forest and thousands of freshwater lakes. The cities and urban areas are sporadically placed within the forests. Northwest Ontario is ideal for hunting; the area is large and the animals are abundant. Four of the best hunting opportunities include black bears, moose, deer, and birds (waterfowl, ducks, grouse, etc).

Ontario Black Bear Hunting

Ontario is one of the most accessible areas in Canada for quality black bear hunting. Our forests and lakes make it a perfect habitat and a plentiful food supply for these industrious animals. As a result, Ontario has one of the largest black bear populations in North America. Since it is hard to accurately count bear populations, estimates as to their numbers vary widely. In the southern part of Sunset Country, around Rainy River, Fort Frances, and Atikokan, there are about 40-60 bears per 100 sq. km. Around Kenora, Dryden, Ignace, Red Lake, and Sioux Lookout, there are approximately 20-40 bears/100 sq. km.

The opening of hunting season for black bears in Ontario is on the 15th of August for most Wilderness Management Units and September 1 or 7 in others. Consult the MNR Hunting Regulations Summary for open season dates for the area you plan to hunt. Opening day may be different for residents and non-residents. Non-residents of Canada now must use the services of a licensed tourist outfitter - even if they own property in the WMU they are hunting in - this is a relatively recent change.

In Sunset Country, bear hunting is excellent and our Travel Association has many tourist outfitters who have rights to Bear Management Areas (BMA) and who can offer guided or unguided hunts. Bow and rifle hunts are the most common and non-residents obtain their licenses and access through the tourist outfitter. There are a wide variety of accommodation choices from fully-guided American Plan hunts to unguided hunts where you rent a housekeeping cabin. You can also fly into a remote outpost cabin and hunt in BMAs that have no road access to them. Whatever package you choose, your chances for a successful hunt are very good. Visit the Sunset Country website for more information on fall or spring bear hunting packages .

guided hunting trips ontario

Ontario Moose Hunting

Northwest Ontario's Sunset Country has more moose than any other region in Ontario. Moose are the ultimate in big game with many bulls sporting 50-plus inch racks. Bow hunts as well as traditional rifle hunts are available or, for something uniquely different, try an old-fashioned black powder hunt. Non-resident moose hunts are available based on tags allocated to our individual outfitters—a system that ensures stable and healthy moose populations while affording hunters the opportunity to bag a trophy bull. Cow and calf tags are also available.

There are few settings as wild or as beautiful as Northwestern Ontario to come for moose hunting. Endless tracts of boreal forests, rock ridges, and wide-open meadows make up the topography of this 60,000-square-mile area of Ontario. As you hunt, you'll find the setting to be to your liking and in itself a big part of the experience. Your accommodation choices are many and varied. Full American Plan lodges where meals are part of the package are available or for the independent hunter, a housekeeping package where you do your own cooking is the best choice. Many hunting lodges are accessed by car or boat or you can try a fly-in moose hunting trip in remote parts of Sunset Country. Our member outfitters offer both guided and unguided hunts. Visit the Sunset Country website for more information on moose hunting in Northwest Ontario .

guided hunting trips ontario

Ontario Deer Hunting

Large populations of whitetail deer can be found in the southern part of Sunset Country. They are mostly found around and below the Trans-Canada Highway which runs across Sunset Country. This is the part of Ontario where the famous "Dryden Buck" was shot at the end of 2003. The illegally shot deer was an Ontario record with a score of 223 gr 199 7/8 net green score. The deer in Ontario are large-bodied and can be found in great numbers. Hunters can access the services of a deer hunting guide if they wish or venture out on their own (some areas must use a guide if you are a non-resident). There is also an excellent population of does.

Deer hunters enjoy a high success rate with full support services from our hunting outfitters. You can stay at a full-service hunting lodge or rent a housekeeping cabin for your Canadian deer hunt. Visit the Sunset Country website for more information on deer hunting in Northwest Ontario .

Ontario is the perfect place for duck hunting

Ontario Duck, Bird and Waterfowl Hunting

The sheer numbers of ducks , Canadian geese , other waterfowl and game birds in the Sunset Country region of Ontario, Canada make it a bird hunter's paradise. Located directly north of the State of Minnesota and with thousands of lakes and water systems, Sunset Country is along a major migration flyway for several species of waterfowl. Extensive beds of wild rice on the many lakes provide important forage for hungry, migrating birds, and the ideal setting for a fall waterfowl hunt. Bring your hunting dog, hunt remote areas accessible only by hovercraft and enjoy the natural beauty of the backcountry areas of Northwest Ontario.

The options for a great hunt are virtually endless! You may want to even combine your hunt with a fall fishing trip .

Download the Ontario Hunting Regulations Summary from the MNR website. It's nicely broken up into species so it's easy to find what you are looking for. The MNR also provides a  Map of the Wildlife Management Unit Boundaries in Ontario . If you want additional information on hunting, the Sunset Country Travel Association also produces a great Travel Guide that includes a poster-sized map of the area. Order your FREE Travel Guide & Map online or call us toll-free at 1-800-665-7567.

Hunting Trips Ontario

Here is a testimonial from a recent moose hunt that shows the true team effort and quality that you can expect when booking a hunt with Anderson’s Lodge:

Dear Jackie, Jody, Rick and Anderson’s Lodge Team

On behalf of our group, we wanted to thank you yet again for hosting us for this years’ 2021 Moose hunt. In these challenging post pandemic times we were very grateful to see such friendly and familiar faces with your team – especially once again Kevin and Andree at our outpost camps. We were grateful and relieved to know that our cabins were cleaned and disinfected prior to our arrival.

The weather was conducive for our success in both hunting as well as the monster pickerel and pike that provided us a phenomenal fish fry dinner for our group.

Thanks for arranging with The Maker, such a panoramic view of the highly coveted, and spectacular Northern Lights from our dock (lol). They were dancing and lighting up the sky for our endless enjoyment. It was a humbling experience for us to enjoy that never gets old for

We (Myself, James, Nicholas, Jayce, Gerry, Will, Mike, Mark-Anthony, Domenic and Travis) all wanted to thank you and all of the staff once again for your sincere hospitality and attention to detail in making our visit memorable.

Ontario Canada Duck and Goose Hunt

canada goose hunt ontario

Guided Ontario Canada Duck and Goose Hunting  in major Canadian waterfowl migratory corridor formed by sandwiching a massive grain agriculture landscape between the impressive St. Lawrence and Ottawa rivers, where impressive Canada geese and duck numbers usually persist for the entire season. Now entering their 6th hunting season in operation, APEX Waterfowling produces generous, 5-bird Ontario honker limits about 99% of the time, and duck limits more times than not.

Ensuring that each group remains the singular focus, a small but extremely experienced and professional staff hosts single client teams of 4-8 at a time, never mixed groups.  A full-time guide, a full-time chef, and a full-time scout have 10-plus years apiece under their belt, and are committed to delivering the best guided Ontario Canada duck and goose hunt possible. Owner-operator Ryan Reynolds holds 12 national Calling Titles, 4 Canadian Calling Championships, hosts the Canadian Duck and Goose Championships each year; is co-founder and co-owner of Capital Waterfowling , Canada’s largest duck and goose call manufacturer. He’s been a professional waterfowl guide for 15 years, having guided all across Canada, and presently sits on Wildlife Habitat Canada’s board of directors..

These Ontario Canada waterfowl hunts are conducted over a combination of dry-field and water sets, depending on scouting reports and targeted species. Canada geese and mallards, along with black ducks, are the real stars of the show, but other common species include lesser scaup, redheads, teal, wood ducks, long-tailed ducks and common goldeneyes. Over new-each-season, top-of-the-line decoys, all hunts are conducted from A-frame blinds ensuring that hunters of all ages and mobility can make the most of shooting opportunities.

“Our roots run deep in the area and we have profound relationships with local farmers, have many thousands of excellent, private-land leases under wraps,” says Ryan, “but as important is our transparency with clients. We don’t just stick them in a field, but we discuss priorities, options, and the factors at hand.”

Guests are lodged in a full house with private rooms, numerous bathrooms, all the normal creature comforts of home, and located conveniently within about 15 minutes of hunting locations. Chef Andrew Rochon treats guests to 3 full meals daily to include savory chili and hearty subs lunches, and the client-favorite braised beef short ribs dinner.  Import your favorite shooting iron, or conveniently use one of theirs.

Guided Ontario duck and goose hunts with Apex Waterfowling are “Where Professionalism and Class Meet the Outdoors.” Located within convenient driving distance of key Atlantic Flyway states, where Canada goose and mallard limits were slashed for the 2019-2020 season, this Ontario Canada Duck and Goose Hunting package offers a reasonable alternative. For more information or to discuss dates, contact Ryan Reynolds at 613-453-8224, email [email protected] .
