BOOK A PRIVATE RENTAL Newport Landing offers multiple cruises each night of the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade as well as holiday lights cruises throughout the month of December to view the amazing light displays that have made Newport beach legendary. Come enjoy the annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade of Lights with Newport Landing!

Holiday cruises beginning Nov. 29, 2024 - Jan. 1, 2025. The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade begins December 18th and ends December 22nd for 2024. Newport Landing offers three cruises nightly for both all of the holiday light cruise dates as well as the 5 nights of the Newport Beach Boat Parade. Newport Landing's holiday lights cruises travel throughout Newport Bay viewing amazing light displays from the many Bayfront estates lining Newport Bay. Parade ship entries are also often viewed in full décor as they cruise through the bay or as the decorated ships are at dock and part of a bay front landscape transformed for the holiday season.

During the 5 nights of the Newport Beach Boat Parade, Newport Landing offers cruises that actually travel in the parade viewing all the decorated ships and Bayfront estates while traveling the parade route the travels through Newport Bay. What better way is there to view all of the holiday activities and décor centering around the boat parade than by ship? All of Newport Landing's ships are fully decorated and have lots of nice amenities to enjoy the festivities in comfort. Newport Landing gives spectators the opportunity to actually participate in the parade, instead of just watching it from the sidelines!

The Newport Beach Boat Parade has a long tradition spanning over a century, from its relatively small scale beginnings to becoming one of the nation's largest holiday events. The Newport Beach Boat Parade wasn't always the giant holiday event it is known for today. The boat parade started out as a 4th of July celebration in Newport Bay back at the turn of the 20th century. The Newport Beach Boat Parade transformed from a 4th of July celebration into a Christmas time event in the 1920's and has continue to grow in spite of challenging times including such obstacles as the Great Depression to the more recent energy crisis of the early 70's. Today's Newport Beach Boat Parade is viewed by over 2 million people each year and has over 300 decorated ships of all of types participating along with hundreds of decorated bay front estates. The holiday season transforms Newport Bay into a most unique southern California holiday destination, a definite must see.

The Christmas Boat Parade is good for all ages.

Hi! Does anyone know how long the boat parade lasts? I see the cruises leave several times a night, does that mean the parade happens several times a night? Thanks!

The cruise lasts about 1 hour. And there are several cruises per night.

Took our 5 & 7 year old grandsons and it was really relaxing and peaceful. Grateful for those homeowners who did such a beautiful job with the Christmas lights. Not sure if we would make this a family tradition, but highly recommend as a holiday event at least once if you happened to be in OC

1 star for the total lack of organization with the check-in process. Multiple lines with no clear direction at Davey's Locker and no real effort on the part of the staff to even clarify, much less help. We followed all the directions and got there an hour in advance, like instructed for fear of our tickets being "released." We stood forever in one line, and when we finally got to the front, we were told to check in way down at the other end of the boardwalk. The whole staff seemed to be oblivious to basic customer service. 5 stars for the boat ride itself. The crew on the Nautilus was great, and the ride itself was wonderful. Averaging the awful with the grand, 3 stars overall.

Took my daughter here last night (Friday night) for a Christmas holiday boat ride. I had to park a few miles from Davey's and just rideshared in as there were no close by parkings. Good luck trying to get in or out in nearby streets and parking lot as it was extremely congested, there were cars lining up for a long time waiting to snatch a parking spot in the parking lot near Davey's. Where I parked was a metered street parking, but it was free the time I parked. I used ParkMobile (app store) to verify parking hours/fees and to pay. Plus, I still parked my car with ParkMobile even though there was no charge, in that way I could locate my car once I returned. I arrived at Davey's at 7PM, but didn't check in until 8PM since I wasted one hour circling around for close by parkings before putting my thinking cap on to park far and rideshared in. It was a long line to check in and our boat was scheduled to leave at 9PM. First, we were in line in front of Davey's to check in and they told us for our scheduled time, we needed to check in inside the store. We went inside and got in line again to be told that we had to walk 2 minutes down to check in at the Newport landing station as they had our tickets there. They were nice enough to have someone to walk us to Newport landing station. Oh there was a public restroom behind Pizza Pete (not clean btw). We got our tickets finally at 8:30PM and were told to get in line no later than 8:50PM to get on the Fury. They sell drinks (alcoholic too) and snacks on the boat, but cash only. There was an ATM before we entered the Fury. The boat ride lasted 75 minutes and it was relaxing. Only a handful of houses that were decorated with lights and the boat was floating in the middle of nowhere and not near any houses. Good for family nights and for young kids (my daughter was not amused). It costed about $80 for 2 tickets. You can see the lights for free just walking around the areas.

I always see thing holiday boat ride advertised and I have been wanting to do it because I love anything Christmas or holiday I should say. It's a great price. And they offered beverages from soft drinks to beer. You can bring food and snacks aboard which was nice for the little kids. It wasn't too cold out we enjoyed the lights out on the deck it was beautiful to experience. I am glad I took advantage of this great deal. It made for lovely photo ops. I wish that more houses were decorated but maybe it was because we came early in December. I would recommend it. It's fun for a whole group. The parking situation is hard but there is valet. It's a cute town and would be nice to hang out afterward, there is places to eat and bars in the area. We got on a small boat wish there were more seats. If you come in a large group arrive early and together if you want to sit together.

Next time I need to call before booking to insure we are on a boat with adequate seating and there will be music and narration. There was seating inside but you can't see much in there. I will do it again but most likely through a different company

Great Newport Boat Parade cruise! Loved every minute of it! The boat was on time, organized and it was fun to ride alongside the boats that were in the parade route.

This was our first Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade. Reading about it being the oldest in the country, we thought why not when already in town. After carefully checking the map, we headed to Balboa Island. It is a man made island across from Newport Beach, that also offers beautiful Christmas decorations this time of year since many houses participate in a Christmas decor competition. This is a tiny island, easily walked on foot, but coming from Long Beach, we accessed the island with the car. You can imagine the traffic an hour before the start of the boat parade. Parking is first come, first serve basis, and we immediately turned on the right after crossing the island and was able to find parking in one of the side streets. The whole experience was very festive and beautiful. We walked around the island twice waiting for the parade to start. At the end, ended on the west side on a public dock. It was nice experience in 50' weather with hot chocolate in hand.

You go on a boat and check out the christmas lights that people put on their homes. The fun thing about this trip is that you get to ride a boat and cruise on the sea. Its also fun to check out the christmas lights from a different point of view. I like that they sell you snacks and drinks on the boat and prices arent too crazy. You can always take some snacks yourself as well. The bad thing about the cruise is that the boat doesnt get close to the homes so it can be hard to see the homes with their christmas lights. I understand that they can get too close cause then you disturb the people but this sucks. The price can vary depending on the time you go. But its between 20-40 dollars depends on the day and time. I got the whole family tickets for around 20 which was good. But anything higher than that and its not worth it if you have to pay more. Pros -You ride a boat -You get in the holiday spirit Cons -It gets cold so take a sweater

Lights

We went on the Sunday after Christmas and there was moderate traffic. They recommend arriving an hour prior because parking is extremely limited and you have to do a little walking. After 30 mins, I found a parking spot and headed towards Davey's Locker. They directed me right past the Ferris wheel to the check in point. The boat started loading exactly at the scheduled time. The cruise was about 70 minutes. They have a snack bar that offers adult beverages, hot cocoa, and snacks. I was slightly thrown off by the woman working the counter. She was bare fisting marshmallows, putting them in all the hot cocoa cups and then touching everything around her without washing her hands or without the use of gloves. My other dislike is that the popcorn they were selling was $5. $5 for a microwaveable bag of popcorn is a big excessive. Especially when it costs $2.99 for a box of 6 at the store and even cheaper when you're buying in bulk! Overall, I spent about $50 at the snack bar plus tip. As we were docking, the captain got on the speaker to inform us of so and also mentioned a whole spiel about tipping the staff as we exited. What! Lol! That was sooo tacky. The staff literally stood at the exit with a box that said tips on it. They should rework that and figure out a better way of doing so. Overall, we didn't really interact with many of the staff, but the ones we did were decent. The cruise wasn't that entertaining but my family and I enjoyed our time together. A few houses were extremely decorated and others were not. Experiencing it one time was good enough for me.

Photo of Silvana G.

This was a very nice Christmas spirit experience and that's saying a lot cause I'm feeling very grinch this year. Took my mom here, she loved it (she's like a kid when it comes to things like this) so yeah it's definitely a nice Christmas date, a family Christmas night out, or night out with friends. If you like seeing Christmas lights your gonna love this, there's a bar where we got hot chocolate which was perfect for the cold, you can sit inside or outside the boat, they play Christmas music, some people were singing along, that was nice, and you can tell everyone has the Christmas spirit. It really is a great way to feel the Christmas magic. The price was very reasonable, 50 for both. Staff were friendly. Definitely recommend. A special thank you to the Newport community who goes above and beyond with the Christmas lights.

If you live in Southern California and you are looking for a way to treat your family to a special event around Christmastime, then it is time to plan a trip to Newport Beach. Whether you have or have not heard of the Newport Beach Boat Parade, you are in for a surprise when you visit. This parade runs for five nights every Christmas and it is designed to ensure everyone involved will have a great time. While the modern version of the event is one of the biggest Christmas celebrations in the country, it has humble roots that date back more than 100 years. Would you like to learn more about this parade and how much fun it can be for you and your family? Then read on.

A Long History: Newport Beach Boat Parade

Over one hundred years ago, a handful of boat owners wanted to do something special to celebrate the Christmas season. That’s why they created the boat parade. At that time, it wasn’t really organized and only about a dozen people were involved. However, those boat owners got out there and put on a display that people loved to see. Even back then, it must have been a fun event since the Newport Beach Boat Parade continued to grow and become a tradition that people all around the state and country would come to enjoy.

Things have certainly grown now and you will see literally hundreds of boats involved with spectacular and breathtaking displays.

The Modern Display:

newportparade-thumb

These days, all types of boats are involved. When you watch the Newport Beach Boat Parade, you will see multimillion dollar yachts, fishing boats, and even canoes. That’s because everyone gets involved. In fact, even the homes and businesses nearby will get involved. All along the shore, homeowners participate by decorating their houses and buildings as well as docks so that one parade becomes a spectacular event.

There are prizes given for the best decorations, and the parade has become such a big deal that a home category has been added recently too. This way, homeowners and boat owners are prompted to do something even more eye-catching every year. That’s why you will see millions of Christmas lights, themed decorations, stories played out in décor, special effects, and much more. You won’t believe the lengths gone to so that people can enjoy a dazzling display.

Viewing the Newport Beach Boat Parade

If you decide to go to the Newport Beach Boat Parade, then the first thing you will need to do is decide where you will view it. If you do your research, you will find that you have options. They include:

  • Watching from your favorite shoreline restaurant
  • Watching from a home or property on the shore
  • Walking to the shoreline
  • Buying tickets to reserved seating

All of those are great options, but they also have problems. You will get to see the boats, but not the homes and docks. That’s why you need to consider another option: Davey’s Locker.

When you go on a scheduled cruise with Davey’s Locker, you will get to see everything, and that includes the boats that have been decorated beautifully as well as the homes, businesses, and other properties that have extravagant displays.

Davey’s Locker provides three cruises a night throughout the five day event so that you can go on the day that is most convenient for you. Additionally, you can rent private boats if you would like. Here is the best part: all of the boats at Davey’s Locker during this time will be decorated for the Christmas season too. You won’t just be watching the boat parade. You will feel as if you are a part of it in an immersive experience.

The Details: Newport Beach Boat Parade

If you decide to go to Newport Beach for the boat parade, then there are a few things you will need to know:

  • It is held for five nights in December
  • The parade lasts from the third Wednesday to the third Sunday
  • Every night, the parade is kicked off at 6:15 pm
  • Davey’s Locker provides three cruises starting in the late afternoon
  • The opening and closing ceremonies of the parade will both have fireworks that you can enjoy from the water if you choose to enjoy a cruise.

You don’t have to go on the scheduled Christmas cruises either since you can rent a boat for you and your family. It will feel like you are a part of the parade and you get all the benefits without actually having to own a boat yourself.

What if you aren’t able to make it to Newport Beach during that week? That’s ok. Davey’s Locker will not leave you out. In fact, every single night, three times a night, from December 3 to January 2, Davey’s Locker offers regular holiday cruises. That way, no matter when you can visit, you will still be able to enjoy the spirit of Christmas. This is a great way to kick off the Christmas season too.

So, ask yourself, how will you celebrate the holidays? Will you drive around in a car hoping to run across some lights here and there? Will you watch the Newport Beach boat parade from the shore or will you make this an experience you will never forget? When you choose a cruise for the boat parade, you can even make sure you are there for the opening or closing ceremonies so that you will be able to see the breathtaking fireworks.

The Newport Beach Boat Parade has been around for more than 100 years and it has only been getting bigger as the years go by. It is certainly an event that no one will be able to forget once they have visited. If you want to go to the parade, make sure you get the most out of it as possible. That means enjoying a cruise so that you can see all of the decorations, on the boats as well as on the properties along the shore. It is certainly a fun event and Davey’s Locker can help you enjoy it even more.

holiday boat parade cruise

Olympian Grand Marshals; Family Focused Kick-Off Event; Ring of Lights Home Decorating Competition and Dozens of Ways to View Orange County’s Most Iconic Christmas Event

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (Dec. 10, 2021) – Everyone is welcome at the 113th Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade taking place for five spectacular nights Dec. 15-19, 2021 in Newport Beach, Calif. Illuminating Newport Harbor for over a century, 100 beautifully decorated yachts and boats of all sizes will once again light up Newport Beach nightly from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. For five nights, experience the parade in a wide variety of fun-filled ways, from a family friendly event on the sand, by boat or shore, below is a full line-up of happenings at America’s most iconic Christmas event.

Home to the West Coast’s largest recreational harbor, Newport Beach pays homage to its iconic boating culture through a fleet of wonderfully decorated yachts, boats, kayaks and canoes motoring along a 14-mile course. This year’s festival theme – “Jingle on the Waves” – also holds a special honor as the first community selected theme in the Parade’s history, submitted by Newport Beach local, Amy Senk.

GRAND MARSHAL LINE-UP:

  • Wednesday, Dec. 15 – Local Orange County Olympians: Phillip & Ryan Chew (Badminton); Jack Williams (Archery); Sakura Kokumai (Karate); Janie Takeda (Softball); Katie McLaughlin (Swimming); Jesse Smith, Alex Wolf and Kaleigh Gilchrist (Water Polo).

RING OF LIGHTS: Homes along the Christmas boat parade route participate in a decorating contest called the Ring of Lights where each house features its own extravagantly themed decorations. From lights on every façade to roof-top animated scenes and dancing Christmas trees, the Ring of Lights has become as celebrated as the boat parade itself. Visitors can view homes by walking around Newport Beach waterfront neighborhoods such as Balboa Island and Balboa Village or view by boat charter or boat rental.
