Tourism Malaysia meets Hong Kong agents
HONG KONG, 11 January 2023: Tourism Malaysia has conducted its first sales mission this year to Hong Kong from 6 to 10 January 2023 to reconnect and further develop more partnerships to boost inbound tourism.
Headed by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, YB Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan, the delegation comprised 27 organisations, including Sabah Tourism Board, Malaysia Health Tourism Council (MHTC), Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) agency as well as other industry players and product owners.
The Malaysian sellers and Hong Kong buyers attended the business matching session and gala dinner, apart from two seminars conducted at the Island Shangri-La Hong Kong, focusing on leisure and niche tourism markets such as medical tourism, homestay and the MM2H programme.
“As Malaysia is targeting 15.6 million tourist arrivals with MYR47.6 billion in tourism receipts for 2023, Tourism Malaysia is ramping up its marketing efforts globally, including raising Malaysia’s profile in the Hong Kong market,” said YB Khairul Firdaus.
“We will continue to work closely with airlines and travel trade partners to encourage tourists to explore and enjoy what Malaysia offers, especially in positioning Malaysia as a preferred tourism destination in this region”.
Hong Kong remains a key market for Malaysia. Regarding connectivity, there are currently 22 flights per week from Hong Kong to Malaysia via Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Cathay Pacific.

Hong Kong Tourism Board Offers Arts And Cultural Attractions That Allows A Full Immersion Into The City’s Past, Present And Future
Kenneth tan.
With the recent relaxation of quarantine measures, Hong Kong now becomes a lot more accessible for those who’ve missed the inimitable energy of this famed city, immortalised in countless films, television serials, music videos and literature. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), the Hong Kong Tourism Board has recently offered its compilation of ‘The Marvels in Hong Kong ’, a series of events from exhibitions and cultural performances which will add to the anticipation of travellers yearning for a return to the city they’ve grown to love.
“Hong Kong has always been close to the hearts of Malaysian travellers,” says Raymond Chan, Southeast Asia Regional Director for the Hong Kong Tourism Board. “There have been a lot of developments in Hong Kong in the last three years, including new infrastructure developments such as the latest arts and cultural district of West Kowloon where the new Hong Kong Palace Museum and M+ are located. This has further established Hong Kong as the arts hub of Asia.”
Start your art discovery in the heart of the West Kowloon Cultural District. M+ , which opened at the end of last year, is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary visual culture in the world with a combination of visual art, design, architecture and moving images.
Hong Kong Palace Museum
Opened in July, this addition to the city’s arts and culture scene has curated over 900 treasures from Beijing’s Palace Museum, many of which are shown in Hong Kong for the first time, with some never having public eyes laid on them before. This museum will also include international displays of artefacts and presents an exchange for educational, cultural and professional exchange programmes.
Xiqu Centre
At this world-class performance venue, one can partake in Chinese traditional theatre, Cantonese opera and regional forms of xiqu (literally translated to xi ‘drama’ and qu ‘song’). This centre , which was established with the goal of preserving, promoting and developing the heritage of Chinese opera, offers performances by master artists, emerging talent and large-scale classic dramas. Its Tea House Theatre Experience provides an introduction to Cantonese opera courtesy of the centre’s resident troupe, while casual visitors can also enjoy film screenings, music performances and a range of educational activities.
West Kowloon Art Park A sprawling waterfront promenade, this Art Park is an urban oasis opening up to views of the Hong Kong island skyline as well as vistas of Victoria Harbour. Its manicured lawns provide pet-friendly access with open-air performances filling the atmosphere with rhythms and song. Exhibitions and events occur with regularity while a broad range of dining options provide a perfect place to recharge, from cosy cafes to fine-dine bistros.

Tourism Malaysia presents strategic roadmap for Visit Malaysia 2026
Malaysia will embark on a tourism marketing blitz under the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM 2026) campaign, with creating demand, increasing traffic, and prioritising target markets forming the strategic cores. The campaign aims to attract 35.6 million tourists and generate RM147.1 billion (US$30.8 billion) in receipts.
In detailing the VM 2026 roadmap last week, Tourism Malaysia said key initiatives would include branding and marketing blitz, strategic partnerships for joint promotions/tactical campaigns, and market segmentation.
Tourism Malaysia will carry out aggressive advertising campaigns, influencer marketing, and compelling content creation across digital (70 per cent) and traditional (30 per cent) media platforms. It will also establish strategic partnerships with airlines, OTAs, and land/sea border operators of neighbouring countries to enhance tourist arrivals.
Key target markets are prioritised into three tiers, led by first-level priorities such as China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Australia. The second-level priorities include South Korea, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, and the UK, followed by third-level priorities comprising Chinese Taipei and Germany.
Attention will also be paid to emerging markets like Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, tourism products and travel experiences will be tailored for niche segments, such as nature-based tourism, experiential tourism, medical and wellness tourism, responsible tourism, luxury, weddings, Muslim-friendly, gastronomy, and bleisure travel.
Tiong King Sing, minister of tourism, arts and culture, said: “Our multi-pronged VM 2026 strategy provides a comprehensive framework to boost Malaysia’s visibility, enhance destination accessibility and elevate our tourism offerings. Through focused efforts and strategic collaborations, we are confident of achieving our yearly arrivals and target receipts in the run-up to VM 2026.”
Tiong added that the NTO would continue to engage industry stakeholders and international partners to refine and execute the VM 2026 strategies, positioning Malaysia as a preferred tourist destination in this region. Indeed, a meeting between Tourism Malaysia and industry players on April 30 has led to the creation of strategic plans to promote the destination among international and domestic markets, in support of VM 2026.
Malaysia’s notable tourism achievements for 1Q2024 are promising. From January to March, Malaysia welcomed 5.8 million arrivals, up 32.5 per cent over the same period in 2023. The top ten markets were Singapore, Indonesia, China, Thailand, Brunei, India, South Korea, the UK, Australia, and the Philippines.
