Andy’s Foster Home - “Child’s Play 2”

In Child's Play 2 , the 1990 sequel to the cult favorite, Andy is sent to live with a foster family in a large two-story Craftsman residence located on a quiet street in South Pasadena. Unfortunately for Andy, his demon doll, Chucky, manages to track him down at the home and continues with his plan to possess his body.

Morningside Cemetery - "Phantasm"

The gates to a former 1916 Mediterranean estate that once belonged to lumber magnate Charles Cobb masked as the entrance to Morningside Cemetery in the 1979 supernatural thriller, Phantasm . After Cobb’s death in 1939, the estate went through a succession of different owners until it was finally purchased by the Marx Brothers. They demolished the residence in 1959, but left the entrance gates unaltered. Today the 107-acre site, which is reportedly haunted, serves as a popular hiking area.

One of Monrovia’s oldest surviving Victorian homes appeared as Leigh Cabot’s residence in Christine , John Carpenter’s 1983 film about a possessed Plymouth Fury. The gorgeous dwelling was originally constructed in 1887, the same year that Monrovia was incorporated as a city. The house was also where Betty White lived in the 2010 rom-com You Again .

AN INTERACTIVE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

The Hollywood Horror Museum (HHM) is an experience unlike any in the world, a “scary thrill ride” that also examines what frightens us and why. More than just a “Halloween Haunted House” or wax museum, the HHM will include life size figures and scenes from numerous TV shows like the Emmy winning American Horror Story and The Walking Dead to films like The Exorcist and King Kong . As well as celebrating the writings of Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Clive Barker, and Stephen King, to the classic Universal and Hammer films and modern horror like Pinhead, Leatherface, Jason, Freddy Krueger and Insidious. The permanent Hollywood Horror Museum is currently being developed in Los Angeles, California, while the traveling museum will exhibit around the world.

STEPPING INTO THE MOVIES

Exhibits will be environments with replica sets, props and brilliantly lifelike figures, accompanied by audio and video of the filmmakers and stars relaying “behind the scenes” about the films and props. Music and sound effects will accompany each exhibit. Guests are encouraged to dress up and do makeup as their favorite creature, or show up as some new creature.

FUN FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY

The museum will be appropriate for ALL AGES with two different sections: “Classic Horror” suitable for all ages and “Modern Horror” for mature and teen audiences. A group of children can visit Classic Horror and learn how makeup effects are made, while teens and adults can view the gore and sexuality of Modern Horror.

THE LARGEST HORROR COLLECTION IN THE WORLD

With the help of private collectors, filmmakers, studios, and special effects artists, HHM will display figures, screen used props, costumes and displays previously only seen in private collections and film studios. With intricately crafted sculptures by KNB Effects and other industry professionals, guests will feel they have walked into the set of Boris Karloff, Bruce Campbell or the cast of The Walking Dead.

RENTALS, WEDDINGS AND PREMIERES

Further revenue will come from private tours, rentals, screenings, live theatre and music events, the gift shop, café and rentals of the set s and rooms for Weddings and Private Parties.

ACCESSIBILITY

The exhibit will be accessible to those with special needs, ADA compliant and will be available in a variety of languages through dubbing  and subtitles.

CLASSIC HORROR MONSTERS

Classic scenes and figures will include: Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Wolfman, Phantom of the Opera, The Invisible Man and Nosferatu, and the great horror actors: Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr. and Sr., Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.

Props from George Romero’s Day of the Dead, Evil Dead, iZombie and The Walking Dead.

VAMPIRES, MUMMIES and WEREWOLVES

Displays include American Werewolf in London, Buffy, The Howling, Fright Night and From Dusk till Dawn.

THE DUNGEON

This path will lead to the R rated film props, displays and environments suitable for mature audiences.

Exhibits will include: The Exorcist, Friday the 13th, Phantasm, Evil Dead, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Alien, Predator, The Thing, Pumpkinhead, Hellraiser, ReAnimator, Hellboy, Fright Night, Child’s Play, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Scream, Silence of the Lambs, Saw, Hostel and The Shining.

FAMOUS HORROR CARS

The most recognizable vehicles from horror films and shows will include: The Munsters’ Koach and Dragula, The Ghostbusters, Supernatural Baby Impala and the 1958 Plymouth Fury from Christine .

HORROR GIFT SHOP

The HHM gift shop will allow fans the option to purchase shirts, hats and a wide variety of collectables at a full range of price points. Exclusively licensed replicas and toys will be available, including a HHM Makeup Kit, which will incorporate the techniques taught throughout the museum.

ADJUSTABLE EXHIBIT SIZES

Due to the hundreds of different props and exhibits available for display, we can adjust  the size of the display to accommodate the venue. Anywhere from 8000 sq ft, up to 25,000 sq ft.

All displays, props, content and materials in The Hollywood Horror Foundation correspond with the laws of Fair Use as an educational nonprofit museum. Certain props are acquired from the studios, networks or collectors, and others are not sponsored nor endorsed by the following companies: Universal, Lionsgate, New Line, Warner, Sony, MGM, ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, Paramount, Legendary, Darkhorse or Hammer Horror. Apologies for any companies excluded.

LA’s Six Most Iconic Horror Movie Houses and Where To Find Them

Some of the most iconic horror movie addresses are right here in our backyard and you may drive by them every day while dodging traffic! This guide is perfect for planning your own Halloween-timed tour of horror’s greatest film locations.

horror movie tour los angeles

These are L.A.’s most notorious houses of horror.

The infamous addresses you might drive by every day, perhaps unaware that they were the stars of your favorite scary movies, music videos, and TV shows. The houses where Michael Myers first drew blood, and Freddy had his first rampage. The abodes where The Ring girl took her first crawling steps from the screen, a zillion zombies danced with Michael Jackson, and the mansion known on-screen as “The Murder House” in American Horror Story .

They’re all right here in our backyard. Perfect for planning your own Halloween-timed tour of horror’s greatest filming locations. Some of them may scare you, some of them may surprise you.

All that’s left is to enter. If you dare…

horror movie tour los angeles

Thriller ~ Echo Park

Roughly 8 minutes and 37 seconds after informing Ola Ray that he’s “not like other guys,” Michael Jackson lures his date into a weathered Victorian house that could body-double for the Psycho mansion. The funk stops and the real trouble begins, the popping, locking zombies losing their rhythm to tear the house down. But you won’t find the place idling on some Universal backlot. The Thriller house is still standing as a cultural historic monument in the Victorian-heavy streets of Angelino Heights. Built in 1887 and known as The Sanders house for its owner, it manages to be beautiful and still a little creepy at the same time.

Thriller House ~ 1345 Carroll Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90026 . Closest Metro lines and stop: Bus Line 92 - “Bellevue/Edgeware (southbound)” or "Edgeware/Boston (northbound)" or Bus Line 10 - "Temple/Edgeware."

Nightmare On Elm Street ~ Hollywood/Echo Park/Lincoln Heights/UCLA

As fun as it was watching decent Midwesterners get their just desserts in the fictional town of Springwood, Ohio, the most iconic locations from Nightmare on Elm Street are in the oh-too-real megalopolis of Los Angeles. You’ll find the two-story Dutch Colonial home whose facade stood in for 1428 Elm Street, the residence of troubled teen Nancy Thompson, in Hollywood’s Spaulding Square neighborhood, where it still sits, looking mostly benign outside so far from the dream world.

Springwood High School, where the soon-to-be-slaughtered suburban kids studied (and apparently learned archery) in the first films of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, was played by John Marshall High School in Silver Lake, which Movie Locations tells us is where Leonardo DiCaprio went to school. However, the school’s interiors were played by John Burroughs High in Hancock Park, according to Curbed.

The long-defunct Lincoln Heights Jail was famously used to film the heart-stopping boiler room scenes where Freddy ruled his dank domain. Interestingly, UCLA’s Royce Hall had a cameo, playing Westin Hills Psychiatric Hospital, where Freddy turns one teen into a literal meat puppet on one of its towers in Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.

These are but a few of the many locations you can see from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise in L.A., which include the houses of Nancy’s pals, down to the place where a young Johnny Depp got swallowed and spit up in bed.

Nancy Thompson’s House ~ 1428 N. Genesee Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90046 . Closest Metro lines and stop: Bus Line 2 - “Sunset/Stanley” or Bus Line 217 - "Fairfax/Sunset."

Springwood High ~ 3939 Tracy St. Los Angeles, CA 90027 . Closest Metro line and stop: Bus Line 182 - “Saint George/Tracy (westbound)" or "Saint George/Aloha (eastbound)."

Westin Hills Psychiatric Hospital ~ UCLA’s Royce Hall : 10745 Dickson Ct. Los Angeles, CA 90095 . Closest Metro lines and stop: Bus Line 2 - “Hilgard/Wyton” or Bus Line 761 - "Hilgard/Westholme."

Halloween ~ South Pasadena

All it takes is a few celluloid frames of John Carpenter’s horror masterpiece to make some of us feel warm and cozy in October. If you’ve seen it so many times you swear you’d recognize the shrubbery, you can test yourself in South Pasadena, where the infamous hedges that hid Michael Myers can be found on Montrose Avenue.

Turns out the South Pas region is riddled with locations from Halloween , having served as the primary shooting grounds for the film. You can see the cursed Myers home, a two-story saltbox that’s since been restored, at 1000 Mission Street and elemental “Last Girl” Laurie Strode’s crib over on Oxley. The owners of the house are said to be friendly and cool about people taking their own pics there, while we’re told to treat the Myers home as if Michael was still living there and in a bad mood.

The Halloween Hedges ~ between 1019 and 1025 Montrose Ave. South Pasadena, CA 91030 . Closest Metro lines and stop: Bus Lines 258 or 260 - “Fair Oaks/Mission.”

The Myers House ~ 1000 Mission St. South Pasadena, CA 91030 . Closest Metro lines and stop: Metro A Line or Bus Line 258 - “South Pasadena Station.”

Laurie’s House ~ 1115 Oxley St. South Pasadena, CA 91030 . Closest Metro lines and stop: Metro A Line or Bus Line 258 - “South Pasadena Station.”

Ghostbusters ~ Downtown

We ain’t afraid of no ghosts. But we admit, sometimes we’re a little afraid of downtown.

But the cast and crew of Ghostbusters certainly weren’t. And while we think of the supernatural comedy as a New York film for many good reasons, a lot of its interiors were filmed on 5th Street in Downtown Los Angeles .

This includes the innards of their firehouse headquarters themselves, located at Firestation No.23 at 5 th and Maple in Downtown. The library stacks where a spectral librarian materialized were the very ones at L.A.’s Central Library. And Downtown’s centurion Millenium Biltmore Hotel served as the Sedgewick Hotel, where the ‘Busters met Slimer whilst coming, seeing, kicking ass, and busting their ghostbusting cherries upon capturing their first spirit.

The Firehouse ~ 225 E. 5th St. Los Angeles, CA 90013 . Closest Metro lines and stop: Bus Lines 16, 18, 33, 53, 60, or 62 - “5th/Los Angeles” or Bus Lines 20, 92, or 720 - "Main/5th."

The Library ~ 630 W. 5th St. Los Angeles, CA 90071 . Closest Metro lines and stop: Bus Lines 16, 18, 20, 37, 53, 55, 60, 62, 70, 76, 78, 487, 489, 720 or Metro J Line (910/950) - “Grand/5th.”

Sedgewick Hotel ~ 506 S. Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90071 . Closest Metro lines and stop: Bus Lines 16, 18, 20, 37, 53, 55, 60, 62, 70, 76, 78, 487, 489, 720 or Metro J Line (910/950) - “Grand/5th.”

American Horror Story ~ Hancock Park

Rents are high. Inflation is out of control. Home ownership just a distant dream from an earlier life.

We’d still take a place known as "Murder House" that’s haunted by the ghosts of the baker’s dozen that have been killed there over multiple decades. Especially if Jessica Lange was the neighbor and any leaks dripped with Ryan Murphy-ian camp.

Maybe the chance will arise at 1120 Westchester Place, in Hancock Park’s Olympic Park neighborhood. Then we could stretch out in architect Alfred Rosenheim’s eponymous 1908 mansion, a red-brick fairy tale castle complete with turret and presumably free of Legos to step on.

It was not only the centerpiece of American Horror Story’s first season. Apparently, it has a couple of real ghosts and a number of recent incursions from fans of the show, leading to its own lawsuit from the new owners . Hey, we’ll take it.

AHS’ Murder House ~ 1120 Westchester Pl. Los Angeles, CA 90019 . Closest Metro lines and stop: Bus Line 28 - “Olympic/Wilton” or Bus Line 30 - "Pico/Arlington."

horror movie tour los angeles

The Ring ~ Hancock Park

Katie had a pretty nice life from all appearances. Beautiful home, nice friends. Then she went and watched the VHS tape from The Ring and wound up super dead. She didn't leave a good-looking corpse, either. Don’t be a Katie.

But if you want to see where the first and perhaps most memorable death from The Ring remake went down, you’ll find it at this beautiful Tudor-style mansion in Hancock Park.

Then you’ll get a call in seven days…

Katie’s House ~ 413 S. Mc Cadden Pl. Los Angeles, CA 90020 . Closest Metro lines and stop: Bus Line 16 - “3rd/Highland”, Bus Line 20 - "Wilshire/Highland (eastbound)" or "Wilshire/Mc Cadden (westbound)."

21 Spookiest Horror Film and TV Locations Around Los Angeles

ÔPrince of DarknessÕ church - 120 Judge John Aiso St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

As the cradle of the movie business, the Los Angeles area is where many of the most popular horror films of all time have been filmed. From “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” to “Halloween” and “Poltergeist,” Hollywood productions have found plenty of spooky locations to shoot iconic scare fare.

From everytown U.S.A. suburban houses to creepy desert gas stations and ominous cemetery gates, you don’t have to venture far outside the city to find just about any kind of location a horror film could need. Of course, some of the scariest movies take place in some of the most placid suburban settings.

Small, bucolic villages like Sierra Madre and South Pasadena are the perfect innocent backdrops, and look like they could easily be in the eastern or midwestern U.S. The famous advice to save money on far-flung location filming and “shoot it in Griffith Park” was taken to heart by the makers of films including “Cabin Fever,” who used the Bronson Cave, familiar to fans of the 1960s “Batman” TV series.

Here are 21 locations that will look eerily familiar to any true horror film fan.

American Horror Story Murder House

American Horror Story - 1120 Westchester Place, Los Angeles

In the first season of the FX series “American Horror Story,” the unsuspecting Harmon family relocates from Boston to Los Angeles after suffering a personal tragedy. What they don’t know is that the house they’ve moved into is nicknamed “the murder house” because of its violent history. Once belonging to a crazy surgeon who performed gruesome procedures in the filthy basement, the macabre mansion is now the locus for a series of bizarre hauntings. Built in 1908 and known as the Rosenheim House, it’s located in the Country Club Park neighborhood and was also seen in “Six Feet Under,” the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series, 2002’s “Spiderman” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

(1120 Westchester Place, Los Angeles)

Cabin Fever - Bronson Caves

Cabin Fever, Invasion of the Body Snatchers - Bronson Cave, 3200 Canyon Dr., Los Angeles (short walk up the trail)

Luckily for horror filmmakers, one of the most iconic places to shoot is located right in the Hollywood Hills, just a short hop from major studios. Bronson Caves in Bronson Canyon are part of Griffith Park, and the cave that served as the Batcave on TV was also used for 2002’s Eli Roth movie “Cabin Fever.” Most of that movie was filmed in an authentically creepy North Carolina forest, but the cave where Justin Grimm — played by Roth himself — is found dead is none other than good old Bronson Cave. Other movies that shot in the all-purpose cave include “The Hills Have Eyes,” “Under the Silver Lake,” “Army of Darkness,” “The Nest” and the original “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.”

(3200 Canyon Drive, Los Angeles)

Charmed House

Charmed - 1329 Carroll Ave, Los Angeles

This popular supernatural TV series tells the story of three sisters (well, technically two sisters and one half-sister) who discover that they’re descended from a family of powerful witches and are destined to save the world from demons, monsters, and all types of sinister creatures. On the show, the ancestral home they share is a large Victorian mansion located in San Francisco. In reality, the house is situated in Angelino Heights in L.A.’s Echo Park, on the same street where Michael Jackson’s Thriller house can be found.

(1329 Carroll Ave., Los Angeles)

The Convent Sorority House

The Convent - 2218 South Harvard, Los Angeles

The cheesily enjoyable horror movie “The Convent” finds a group of sorority girls and fraternity guys menaced by a bunch of demonic nuns in an abandoned convent. The Alpha Delta Die sorority house where the girls live is really the Beckett Mansion in Los Angeles, directly across the street from the spot where Wes Craven shot “The People Under the Stairs.”

(2218 South Harvard St., Los Angeles)

Ghoulies - Wattles Mansion

Ghoulies Mansion (Wattle mansion - 1824 N. Curson Ave., Hollywood

In an outstanding year for horror movies, “Ghoulies” stood out for its family-friendly humor. In this “Gremlins” knock-off, t he monster-infested mansion where the Ghoulies live was just down the street from the “Nightmare on Elm Street” house — smack in the middle of Hollywood. Known as the Wattles Mansion, it was built in 1907 and is now owned by the Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, which rents it out for weddings, filming and other events. The elaborate dwelling can also be seen in “May,” the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” TV series and “Rain Man.”

(1824 N. Curson Ave., Hollywood)

Halloween – The Myers House

Halloween -- Michael Myers house - 1000 Mission St. (but actually facing onto Meridian St.)

Although set in the fictional town of Haddonfield, Ill., John Carpenter’s influential slasher hit was actually shot in and around cozy South Pasadena, Calif.  The infamous Myers house, where 6-year old Michael slaughtered his sister Judith with a kitchen knife, is located directly across the street from the brick building that served as the hardware store where Michael stole his iconic white-faced mask in the original movie. No longer as spooky or ramshackle as it appeared in the film, the Myers house is smaller than it looks on screen, but retains many of the subtle Victorian details that made it such a perfect choice for a horror film.

(1000 Mission St., South Pasadena)

Halloween – Laurie’s House

Halloween pedestal - Fairview Ave. and Oxley St., South Pasadena

Although Michael Myers’ house is considered a mecca for “Halloween” fans, the friendliest and most accommodating location from that horror classic is actually Laurie Strode’s home, situated only a few blocks away from Michael’s abode. That’s because the current owners graciously leave plastic pumpkins on their front porch year-round for fans to use as props when taking photos at the location. Laurie’s house is directly across the street from the South Pasadena Public Library, which bears a small commemorative plaque under one of its outdoor benches dedicated to the memory of “Halloween” producer Moustapha Akkad.

(1115 Oxley St., South Pasadena)

Halloween – The Hedge

Halloween - hedge - between 1019 and 1025 Montrose Ave., South Pasadena

In one of the most memorable moments from Carpenter’s classic, teenage babysitters Laurie, Annie, and Lynda walk home from school and spot Michael Myers lurking ominously behind a thick hedge in their neighborhood. As they approach, he steps just out of sight, sending a shiver of fear down Laurie’s spine. That memorable hedge can be found on Montrose Ave. in South Pasadena. Bring your favorite Myers mask and a camera for some Halloween-themed selfies.

(1019 and 1025 Montrose Ave., South Pasadena)

Halloween II – Haddonfield Town Square

Halloween II, Invasion of the Body Snatchers - 51 N. Baldwin Ave. storefronts, Sierra Madre

Fans of the first sequel to Carpenter’s “Halloween” will definitely want to explore the quaint storefronts in and around Kersting Court in Sierra Madre, east of Los Angeles. That’s because this lovely area was used for several exterior shots in “Halloween II.” In the film, Michael Myers relentlessly makes his way towards Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, silently stalking past current Kersting Court businesses like Mother Moo Creamery as he heads up North Baldwin Ave. in search of fresh victims. Scenes from the 1956 sci-fi horror classic “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” were also shot at the same location – as was “Big Little Lies.”

(51 N. Baldwin Ave., Sierra Madre)

Halloween III: Season of the Witch - The Buccaneer

Halloween III - - The Buccaneer-- 70 W. Sierra Madre Blvd, Sierra Madre

Is a “Halloween” film without Michael Myers still a “Halloween” film? It’s debatable, but this 1982 installment in the series is a solid horror film in its own right. The Buccaneer is the kind of small-town bar found pretty much everywhere in America: a pool table, a small stage for live music and a clientele of seasoned regulars. Found on the main drag in bucolic Sierra Madre, just outside of Los Angeles, the 60-year old tavern looks just about the same, complete with the painted mural behind the bar, as it did when actor Tom Atkins tossed back a few beers while planning a trip to the Silver Shamrock mask factory. Much of the rest of the filming took place in the remote Northern California town of Loleta.

Nightmare on Elm Street House

Nightmare on Elm Street House - 1428 N. Genesee, West Hollywood

It’s really in Hollywood, but the movie set in the fictional town of Springwood, Ohio kept the same house number and changed the street to Elm Street. The traditional style house where beloved final girl Nancy lived (played by fan favorite Heather Langencamp) also appeared in “Freddy’s Revenge” and “Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.” It last sold for $2.1 million, and features a pool and guest house if you don’t mind feeling the spirit of Freddy Krueger hanging over your daily activities.

(1428 N. Genessee Ave., West Hollywood)

A Nightmare on Elm Street - John Marshall High School

Nightmare on Elm Street/Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Marshall High School, 3939 Tracy Street, Los Feliz

Built in 1930, the classic brick design of John Marshall High School in Los Feliz has been featured in many movies and TV shows over the years, including several notable horror films and series. Fans of Wes Craven’s classic “A Nightmare on Elm Street” will instantly recognize it as Springwood High School, where plucky student Nancy Thompson and her soon-to-be-murdered friends studied before falling victim to Freddy Krueger. The location also appears as fictional Hemery High School in the 1992 feature film version of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Conveniently located to movie studios, it’s among the most filmed schools anywhere, and also appeared in “Grease,” “Pretty in Pink,” “Grosse Pointe Blank,” “Boy Meets World” and “iCarly,” among many others.

(3939 Tracy St., Los Angeles)

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors - Royce Hall

General aerial overall view of Royce Hall on the campus of University of California, Los Angeles, Tuesday, April 14, 2020, in Los Angeles. (Kirby Lee via AP)

In the second sequel to Wes Craven’s classic “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” a group of mentally disturbed teens are sent to Westin Hills Psychiatric Hospital to receive treatment for a variety of sleep disorders. Naturally, Freddy Krueger arrives and begins picking them off, one by one, in gruesomely inventive ways. In reality, UCLA’s historic Royce Hall served as the creepy hospital’s exterior. The UCLA campus in Westwood has appeared in hundreds of movies and TV shows, doubling as “UC Sunnydale” in the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” TV series as well as appearing in “Legally Blonde,” “Angels and Demons” and “Old School.”

(10745 Dickson Ct, Los Angeles)

The People Under the Stairs House

The People Under the Stairs- 2215 South Harvard, Los Angeles

Set primarily in a former funeral home, Wes Craven’s indescribably freaky horror comedy tells the story of an incestuous pair of landlords who terrorize their neighborhood by locking unsuspecting residents in their fortified basement. Subsisting on a diet of human flesh, the unlucky captives eventually escape from the confines of the cellar and invade the rest of the house by crawling through a series of hidden passageways in the walls. The 1905 Thomas W. Phillips House is located in Los Angeles’ West Adams neighborhood just across the street from the spooky mansion used in “The Convent.”

(2215 South Harvard Blvd., Los Angeles)

Phantasm – Mortuary Gates

Phantasm - mortuary gates - Lake Avenue at E. Loma Alta Dr. (5400 N Lake Ave., Altadena)

Director Don Coscarelli’s 1979 drive-in classic about strange hooded creatures and deadly flying spheres that terrorize visitors to Morningside Cemetery was set in Oregon but shot primarily in California’s San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys. The stone gates of the former Cobb Estate that served as the entrance to the film’s creepy cemetery are located in Altadena, just north of Pasadena. Fans are advised to take caution when visiting the spot, however, since the sprawling 107-acre site where the gates are located, which leads to several hiking trails, is reportedly haunted in real life.

(5400 N. Lake Ave., Altadena)

Poltergeist House

Poltergeist house - 4267 Roxbury St., Simi Valley 93063

One of the most memorable horror films of the 1980s, Tobe Hooper’s supernatural extravaganza takes place in a fictional suburban neighborhood in California where an all-American family finds their comfortable home invaded by angry ghosts and demonic spirits. Much of the film’s impact comes from the fact that the house itself appears so cozy and non-threatening, as writer and producer Steven Spielberg often chose for his settings. Unlike the gothic abodes seen in movies like “The Haunting” and “The Changeling,” the house in “Poltergeist” looks more like the Brady Bunch home than it does a traditional haunted dwelling, which makes the terror much more relatable. Although the house literally implodes and vanishes during the movie’s climax, in reality it can still be found in the distant Los Angeles suburb of Simi Valley.

 (4267 Roxbury St., Simi Valley)

Poltergeist II: The Other Side House

Poltergeist II - 1589 Homewood Drive, Altadena

Since the house in the original “Poltergeist” disappeared into an otherworldly void at the end of the film, the sequel moves the action from California to Arizona, with the unlucky Freeling family now living with their psychic grandmother Jess. Once again, supernatural forces descend upon the Freelings in the form of a gruesome preacher named Kane and his cult-like minions. Though set in a suburb of Phoenix, the actual house seen in the movie is located in Altadena, just north of Pasadena, and this time it’s a 100-year old-plus craftsman style instead of a 1970s tract house.

(1589 Homewood Drive, Altadena, Calif.)

Prince of Darkness Church

ÔPrince of DarknessÕ church - 120 Judge John Aiso St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

The former Japanese Union church was a pivotal location in John Carpenter’s 1987 horror film that starred Donald Pleasance as a satanically-obsessed priest. The priest and a group of physics students investigate strange phenomena while trapped in the church, which is encircled by ravenous street people led by Alice Cooper. Now home to the East West Players theater group, the church was built in 1923 and has been a centerpiece of the area’s Little Tokyo Japanese American community ever since. “Prince of Darkness” was shown in a special screening at the church in 2015.

( 120 Judge John Aiso St, Los Angeles)

The Ring House

ÔThe RingÕ - 413 N McCadden Pl, Los Angeles, CA 90004

In the chilling opening sequence of the 2002 remake of “The Ring,” a doomed teenage girl admits to her friend that she recently watched an infamous cursed videotape. Seconds later, she meets her untimely end when an evil spirit crawls out of a TV set and literally frightens her to death. Though much of the film was shot in Washington and Oregon, the house where that unforgettable scene takes place is located at in the stately Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

(413 S. McCadden Place, Los Angeles)

Scream 2 - Rialto Theater

Scream II - Rialto Theater, 1023 Fair Oaks Ave., South Pasadena

South Pasadena’s long-shuttered Rialto Theater has been seen in numerous films, including most famously, Robert Altman’s “The Player.” Much of the sequel to Wes Craven’s “Scream” was shot in Los Angeles, rather than in Northern California where the original was filmed. The 1925 Rialto movie palace has a starring role in the frightening pre-credits sequence featuring Jada Pinkett Smith. It’s the location where a sneak preview of “Stab,” based on the events of the previous film, turns into a grisly preview of the mayhem to come. The scene proved so popular it was spoofed in “Scary Movie.”

(1023 Fair Oaks Ave., South Pasadena)

Thriller House

Thriller - 1345 Carroll Ave., Los Angeles

In this iconic music video, Michael Jackson takes his girlfriend to see a 1950s werewolf film and then walks her home at night when the movie ends. As they pass a moonlit graveyard, the dead begin to rise, and Jackson mysteriously turns into a zombie himself. After a well-choreographed dance number involving the King of Pop and a group of reanimated corpses, Jackson’s terrified date takes shelter in a spooky abandoned house, which is quickly overrun by an army of flesh-hungry ghouls. The house where the climax of the video is set can be found in the historic Angelino Heights neighborhood just northwest of downtown Los Angeles, home to dozens of well-preserved Victorian homes that are often used for filming.

(1345 Carroll Ave., Los Angeles)

Los Angeles made headlines after the county’s department of public health announced it was cancelling Halloween due to COVID-19. They reverted their decision less than a day later after receiving widespread backlash and instead advised against…well, most Halloween festivities.

So while trick-or-treating is discouraged and in-person parties are a no-go, you can still celebrate Halloween at a safe distance this year with a freakishly fun and FREE alternative! (Excluding the cost of gas, of course.)

Here are 25 horror movie filming locations in LA for those who have a bad case of what the old-timers used to call “cabin fever.”

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

horror movie tour los angeles

1428 N Genesee Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046

Although set in Springwood, Ohio, this classic was filmed all throughout LA. The most recognizable location by far is Nancy Thompson’s house. See the very house Nancy discovers she must stay awake to stay alive and pull Freddy out of the dream world and into the real world to defeat him.

2. House on Haunted Hill (1959)

horror movie tour los angeles

2607 Glendower Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90027

Long before its use for Blade Runner , Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Predator 2 , the historic Ennis House’s exterior was used for “the most horrifying house in the world” in House on Haunted Hill . You can drive to the Griffith Observatory just minutes away to see the entrance, which was used as the driveway, in the 1999 remake.

3. Carrie (1976)

horror movie tour los angeles

710 Pier Ave, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254

You can roam through what is seen on screen as Bates High School at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, formerly known as Pier Avenue Junior High. Nearly all scenes featuring Carrie’s high school, with the exception of the prom in flames, were shot here. Watch out for bullies and pig’s blood if you decide to visit.

4. Chopping Mall (1986)

horror movie tour los angeles

15301 Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks, CA 91403

The Park Plaza 2000 Shopping Center’s interior is really the Sherman Oaks Galleria’s. The Galleria is the same mall featured in Fast Times at Ridgemont High , Terminator 2: Judgment Day , Back to the Future Part II , Commando and Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge .

The Galleria took a major financial hit following the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. In 2002, it was completely redeveloped and transformed into an outdoor mall. Although it may not look anything like it once did, still avoid staying after hours to keep safe from Killbots!

5. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

horror movie tour los angeles

1801 N Topanga Canyon Blvd, Topanga, CA 90290

The Kelly Gulch property was used for interior and exterior shots of the famous Jarvis house where Tommy hacks Jason with his machete. This is the same location in Pumpkinhead that the teenagers who kill Ed Harley’s son hide out in. You can book a photoshoot at the location and even spend the night at the farm!

6. Constantine (2005)

horror movie tour los angeles

259 S Broadway, Los Angeles, California, USA

7. Halloween II (1981)

1824 N Curson Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046

If you find a parent’s book on black magic and are thinking about jokingly casting a spell, word of advice: just don’t. The Graves family mansion that the Ghoulies terrorize is actually the Wattles Mansion and Gardens. You can rent the space for a photo shoot, party, or wedding .

horror movie tour los angeles

1111 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90015

horror movie tour los angeles

10625 Plainview Ave, Tujunga, CA 91042

13. Christine (1983)

horror movie tour los angeles

3520 Medford Street, Los Angeles, CA 90063

Never bully a beauty like a 1958 Plymouth Fury. (Emphasis on “fury.”) After Moochie helps trash Christine, she intimidates him to “Itty Bitty Pretty One” by Thurston Harris then chases after him down the street. Determined to kill, she squeezes through a narrow loading dock to crush him. The location today appears nearly identical to how it looked decades ago.

14. Waxwork (1988)

horror movie tour los angeles

255 S Rossmore Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90004

This house was used as the wicked David Lincoln’s waxwork museum. Here, he welcomes a group of college students for a private exhibition, only for them to get sucked into the various displays and become additions to his museum. Why? So he can obviously unleash evil on Earth. It seems like nothing good ever happens at midnight with Zach Galligan around…

15. Phantasm (1979)

horror movie tour los angeles

5400 N Lake Ave (at E Loma Alta Dr), Altadena, CA 91001

The Morningside Mortuary is home to the terrifying Tall Man and his zombie dwarf minions. Although the mortuary scenes were filmed in Oakland, the entrance to the Cobb Estate appeared as the cemetery’s gate. Some locals know the Cobb Estate as “The Haunted Forest,” “The Enchanted Forest,” or simply a great hiking spot.

Since the trail is open at all hours, you can explore the area at night if you dare — just like our very own Josh Millican did with Richard Trejo and paranormal investigator, Jose Prendes!

16. Night of the Comet (1984)

horror movie tour los angeles

17. Candyman (1992)

horror movie tour los angeles

18. Prince of Darkness (1987)

horror movie tour los angeles

120 Judge John Aiso St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

Formerly known as the Japanese Union Church of Los Angeles, this church is where all hell — in the form of Satanic green liquid — breaks loose. The building was severely damaged after the Northridge Earthquake and became home to East West Players, the nation’s premier Asian American theatre, in 1998. The theatre held a screening of the film last year and in 2015, so keep your eyes peeled for (hopefully) more in the future!

19. They Live (1988)

horror movie tour los angeles

645 S Hill St, Los Angeles, CA 90014

This is the alleyway where the famous six-minute-long fight scene between John Nada and Frank takes place. Just when you think it’s over, it keeps going and Nada continuously pleads for Frank to put on the sunglasses. It’s not until they’re both so worn down from beating the living hell out of each other that Nada puts the glasses on Frank. Finally, he can see those gnarly formaldehyde faces.

20. House (1986)

horror movie tour los angeles

21. Child’s Play 2 (1990)

horror movie tour los angeles

118 Pier S Ave, Long Beach, CA 90802

22. Drag Me To Hell (2009)

horror movie tour los angeles

10 Chester Pl, Los Angeles, CA 90007

The historic Doheny Mansion is featured as the home of medium Shaun San Dena. The house is used in the opening scene dating back to 1969 in Pasadena and again in Shaun’s death scene. You can tour the Doheny Mansion once it’s open to the public again for just $20.

23. The Fog (1980)

horror movie tour los angeles

2108 Laurel Canyon Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90046

The convenience store that experiences strange shaking and its bottles clinking at the beginning of the film is the Canyon Country Store, a market with a whole lot of charm and history.

Stars like Harry Houdini, Sophia Loren, Errol Flynn, Steve Martin, George Clooney, Werner Herzog, Jessica Biel, Christina Applegate and Jennifer Aniston have visited the store. Not only that, but this place was a hot spot for musicians in the ‘60s. It is the very store Jim Morrison refers to in “Love Street” as “where the creatures meet.” He and Pamela Courson lived right behind it.

24. Puppet Master (1989)

horror movie tour los angeles

99 S Raymond Ave, Pasadena, CA 91105

The Castle Green Apartments appear as the Bodega Bay Inn where puppet maker, André Toulon, reanimates his puppets, stores them in a chest in the wall, then shoots himself before the Nazis can get to him. 25. Scream 3 (2000)

horror movie tour los angeles

1923 Micheltorena St, Los Angeles, CA 90039

“The last thing we want is to take you to a location from a movie you don’t like,” he explains. “You can count on seeing a lot more than ten iconic movie locations on your tour, but we want you to be psyched to see the ten you pick.”

The three-hour driving tour is available through Oct. 31, 2022, for $350 per vehicle (up to four people). Special nighttime tours are also offered. Click here for details.

Horror Movies & Their Film Locations For Your Trip to Los Angeles

If you’re coming to Los Angeles and want to do something different and on your own, you’re in luck because I have a list of places you can find without a tour guide. These are 5 horror movies and their film locations in Los Angeles. Yes! Can we say “bloody murder!?”

The first horror movie is one of my favorites. This movie is known for slicing and dicing. In fact, it’s iconic. I mean, the man with knives for fingers. The one with the boiler room. If you’ve got that thirst to find the original Nightmare on Elm Street house, look no more because I’m going to tell you where it is!

Before I tell you, I should let you know many of the places I’m about to disclose are actual residences. In other words, people live in them. Therefore, let’s try to respect their privacy and stay away from climbing in their yards or knocking on their doors or anything like that.

1. Nightmare on Elm Street

The Nightmare on Elm Street house, where Nancy lived is located at 1428 Genessee Avenue, West Hollywood, Los Angeles. The original star, Heather Langenkamp played a great final girl at this location! It’s too bad her dreamy Johnny Depp Boyfriend who lived across the street didn’t make it ’til the end.

horror movie tour los angeles

Speaking of Johny Depp, his character’s house is actually across the street. It’s located at 1419 Genessee Avenue, West Hollywood, Los Angeles. That’s the house he dies in!

If you want to continue looking for Nightmare on Elm street film locations, by all means go for it. However, I should tell you these are scattered throughout LA and you might need an entire day to scout them out.

The high school they attend is John Marshall High School, 3939 Tracy Street in Silverlake. It’s an actual school therefore, you won’t be able to enter.

The Cahuenga Branch Library, Santa Monica Boulevard, in East Hollywood is where they filmed the scenes of the 5th Precinct or the jail where Nancy goes at night to see her friend die by Freddy’s hand.

2. Drag Me To Hell

Ever seen Drag Me To Hell? The movie about a poor girl trying to make it in LA only to have a gypsy curse her and thus eventually gets dragged to hell. Sorry, spoiler alert!

This is a great horror movie. It’s also somewhat campy and sad, in my opinion. This movie is set in LA and I believe it’s an accurate portrayal of what it’s like living here. I mean, I often feel like a gypsy put a curse on my car with all this freaking traffic around.

In Drag Me to Hell, you see Christine (the main character) driving down the 110 Freeway. You see the downtown skyscrapers.

But if you want to get up close and personal with some of the houses and “sets” where some of the freaky stuff happens, then keep on reading!

At one point in the movie, Christine goes to a witch doctor to get rid of the curse. This scene is filmed inside the infamous Doheny Mansion (aka the Greystone Mansion.) This mansion surrounded by creepy lore is a must for any tourist. In fact, many movies use the Doheny Mansion, including Spiderman and the original X-men movie.

The Doheny Mansion is free to check out. It’s absolutely beautiful. Although beware they don’t always let you inside. Trust me, I’ve been there!

Christine’s home where she eventually gets attacked by the Lamia is located at 1031 Everett Street. This creepy but cute house has also been featured in other movies as well. You might recognize it.

horror movie tour los angeles

Ultimately, the scene where Christine meets her demise and…well gets dragged to hell is none other than Union Station. I know, I know… it just looks like a generic train track… Union Station is a decent looking train station, but train tracks will be train tracks. Union Station is located at 800 North Alameda Street.

horror movie tour los angeles

3. Blade Runner

If you’re from LA, you probably already know the film locations for Blade Runner (the original not the sequel.)

The original Blade Runner is such a classic. It’s futuristic, weird, existential, and just downright pretty!

This brilliant movie uses aesthetics to a new level. However, some of these masterful works of art we call sets are just good ol’ fashion buildings that stand in Los Angeles today.

horror movie tour los angeles

One of my favorite areas in LA is downtown. Downtown is currently booming with great gems, from awesome restaurants to incredible new urban skyscrapers, to architecturally significant works of art.

That’s where The Bradbury Building comes in. The Bradbury building is used near the end where Decker fights the last robots. This picturesque structure is open to the public and in use today. You can visit the Bradbury building and check out the ironwork. You can see its beauty. It’s such a magnificent and stunning work of art. It will stick with you forever! It’s also free to enter.

horror movie tour los angeles

The Bradbury building is also featured in 500 Days of Summer. In the last scene where Joseph Gordon Levitt has his interview… That’s the Bradbury building. It’s at 304 S Broadway.

Apart from this beautiful gem, we have several famous landmarks used as film locations in the movie as well.

There’s the beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis House which utilized the exterior as Decker’s apartment building.

horror movie tour los angeles

There are other film locations as well… But I find them a little too boring to mention them. With Union Station being one of them as well… We’ll just skip on to the next scary movie location you may want to hit on your next visit to Los Angeles.

4. Halloween

One of the greatest slasher films of all time is Halloween. The first movie released in 1978 is a movie about suburban hell! Am I wrong? I mean only in the suburbs will some masked killer want to slay these crazy soccer moms. Fortunately, Jamie Lee Curtis was cast in this movie with her insane ‘serial killer’ killing superpowers to save the day.

In any case, this movie set in a fictional suburb of Illinois was actually filmed in the suburbs of Los Angeles. The film locations are split between areas in Pasadena California and Hollywood.

Let’s begin, Laurie Strode’s house or Jamie Lee Curtis’ character. It’s located at 1103 Fairview Avenue in Pasadena. If you’re scared of the suburbs as much as I am, then prepare yourself because those chills running down your spine are real!

horror movie tour los angeles

The house where it all goes down is in Hollywood. The Doyle house, where Jamie Lee Curtis babysits, is 1530 Orange Grove Avenue, and the Wallace house, scene of the murders, is across the street at 1537 Orange Grove Avenue.

horror movie tour los angeles

Although to remind everyone again, these places are occupied so let’s not knock on the doors or walk on people’s lawns. They can call the cops on you for that. So let’s be discreet and not disturb the residents. Take some pictures and prepare for those ohhh and aahs.

5. House on Haunted Hill

The original House on Haunted Hill starring Vincent Price primarily focuses on one film location. The entire movie focuses on a group of individuals who are invited to a party where they ultimately meet their demise.

The location of the party is at the Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis House. As luck would have it, this beautiful yet different looking house comes out in many movies! In any case, this house is unique enough to make it a pit stop in your Los Angeles tour. The Ennis House is located at 2607 Glendower Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90027.

There, that wasn’t so bad, was it? You made it this far, and you’re still alive. I mean, Micheal Myers, Haunted Hills, and Freddy Kruger? They’re definitely not forces to reckon with. You can find all these film locations on your own. I’m glad to be able to show you these amazing yet somewhat creepy sites to see on your next trip to LA. You know how much I like it unique and creepy.

Feel free to save this for your next trip to Los Angeles and share it with the planet!

Let Me Break It Down For You:

What draws the otherworldly to Los Angeles?

As the second-largest city in the United States, plenty of people have made their way through to the City of Angels and failed to see their dreams come true. In a town that glorifies make-believe, separating reality from the glitzy façade can be extremely difficult. Our tour offers you an uncompromising look at what makes Los Angeles such a haunted location.

Loss and disappointment are common themes in these stories; it’s easy to understand how Los Angeles has become such a hotbed for paranormal activity. Even as big corporate investors are revitalizing the area, remnants of a seedy past, full of failures peek through the cracks, whether through a grand bank building, or an abandoned studio theater, one of the largest ever built in the United States.

Sure, you can read about the ghosts of Hollywood, but experiencing the tragedy and failure that underlies the city of angel’s smiling exterior, in person, and at night will make you feel like you are a part of the city’s strange and ghostly history.

Reserve your tour today and experience the side of Los Angeles that Hollywood does not want you to know about!

The movies are where the magic is made, and the magicians who create the movies all admire real-life magicians. The LA Ghosts tour passes by one of the most revered places for many magicians to visit. It’s a strictly members-only institution where an invitation is as hard to find as a rabbit in a hat.

Originally the exotic-looking château style home of industrialist Rollin B. Lane, the 1909 structure is now The Magic Castle. An exclusive club for magicians and illusionists to show their routines to the most discerning crowd in the world – other magicians.

With so much magic around, it’s a shame they have been unable to protect themselves from being haunted. A ghostly presence backstage has verbally intimidated several performers, causing one heading on to the stage in the late 80s to tear apart the green room looking for the source of the cruel taunts he heard before his show.

The ghost of Rollin B. Lane also still roams the halls, he might know something about another mysterious presence in the basement. The basement is also home to the specter of a young girl. The Magic Castle will share more of its tricks with you on the LA Ghosts Tour.

Many guests on our tour have experienced unexplained events. We invite you to become one them.

LA Ghosts Tour takes you through 8 or 12 different sites around the Hollywood Boulevard area, each one ratcheting up the tension. Meet your experienced tour guide outside of the El Capitan Theatre, 6838 Hollywood Blvd , at least 15 minutes before your tour’s scheduled departure time. The standard tour takes about an hour and walks you through several landmark locations in the area. If you select the extended tour, you will get another 40 minutes of chilling stories and historical locations!

The LA Ghosts walking tour is a great way to see the amazing sites of Hollywood Boulevard while also getting your fill of the ghostly atmosphere of the city’s most haunted locations. This tour is perfect for first-time visitors to Los Angeles and seasoned locals alike!

Our Los Angeles Ghost Tour is a family-friendly attraction, and it is suitable for everyone, so bring your kids, friends, or a date! We’ll make sure that you have an informative, memorable, and slightly terrifying night. Keep in mind that tours fill up quickly, so reserve your spot early through our website.

With so many tours and activities to choose from LA Ghosts, how do you choose which ones to book?

5 reasons to book your la ghosts tour right now.

You want to immerse yourself in the spooky history of Tinsel Town

Reasons

Soak up some fascinating history on your tour as well as hearing about the deplorable side of the City of Angels.  In a town where everyone’s got a story, sticking to the facts takes dedication and perseverance. Our tour is painstakingly researched and based on facts from the history books and recorded first person accounts of hauntings and ghostly sightings.

Los Angeles, like so much of southern California, was initially settled by Spanish Mexico, later absorbed into the United States after the Mexican War. The small city of Los Angeles struggled initially and focused on selling the sunshine of California as a health tonic to the pale, sickly workers of the East Coast (or so they were depicted).  The movie industry came later, and really got going with the arrival of Cecil B. DeMille. Weak Unions and plentiful labor with cheap space for studios made it a small rival for the established studios in the North East US.

The 40s and 50s with the Hollywood Red Scare, and the Golden age of the studio system established Hollywood’s reputation and opened the floodgates of people seeking fame and fortune, but the ghosts were already here.

The Hollywood sign even has its own hauntings and spooky stories. In 1930 the sign was still in its original form, reading ‘HOLLYWOODLAND’ it promoted a new housing development. Aspiring actress Peg Entwistle tasted fame, following the time-honored tradition of an ‘and’ career Actress ‘and’ stage bit player, she also went to parties with Hollywood’s royalty hoping to be noticed. The strategy worked, she appeared in one film, Thirteen Women (1932), but then she hit a dead end. Drinking, drugs, and depression ensued, and after one heavy night of drinking, she scaled all 50 feet of the first ‘H’ and plunged to her death.

Since then several sightings by hikers and even motorists have kept the story of Peg Entwistle alive and her spirit haunting the H in Hollywood.

You are looking to get to know the LA story

LA has the movies, but it’s still a city like any other, and even LA felt the effects of the Great Depression. The beautiful Hollywood First National building opened as a mixed-use building as high as was possible at the time, with ‘ultra-modern fixtures’ it was, for a while, a desirable location.

Then disaster struck, the Great Depression affected the owners. The building ran into trouble and became run down with the economic difficulties affecting many of the tenants, this led to one tense showdown where a tenant on the upper floors kidnapped his secretary and threatened her with a gun. The police attempted a daring raid, but it backfired and the gunman was tackled just after he had killed the secretary, and in the struggle he tried to shoot himself, maiming his face.

To this day a mutilated ghost patrols the building, which is perhaps why it remains empty and haunted.

Our tour is full of detailed insights into the lives, loves, and losses of the characters who helped build Hollywood and its storied legend.

You need something to do with the whole family

Hollywood is a family-friendly area today, our tour of LA’s Ghosts continues in this vein. We welcome people of all ages on the tour and offer entertainment and history for everyone. Our stories are scary, but we aim just short of terrifying, leaving most of the gore and guts to the imagination.

Some of the stories we tell are of benevolent hauntings, some might even be downright cute! Ghosts come in as many guises are there are living spirits to create them.

For example, the ghost that hoovers up the popcorn littered rows of The Egyptian Theatre has never been seen, but rumor has it the creature snuffles a lot like a pig, and if you drop your glasses and come face to face with it, you’ll only hear it, and see the seats move as it scurries away, startled. But bear in mind this has been going on for years…

You are looking for a new angle on the same old Hollywood Stories

Everyone knows the one in a million Hollywood stories that end in fame and fortune, with a career on the silver screen being adored by millions. But Hollywood has a different side. A darker side. Some stories don’t have a happy ever after, these are the Hollywood that most people experience, and we proudly present their stories for your entertainment, shock and awe!

Let us tell you about the misdeeds, mishaps, and miscreants that haunt Tinsel Town today and are, in our opinion better stories than most of what you will see at the movies today.

Take for instance the intrepid reporter convinced that the infamous Hollywood Wax Museum ® was not haunted despite all the tales and first-hand accounts to the contrary.

He decided to sleep inside the museum one night, with the agreement of the staff. The next morning the staff opened the doors, the journalist was in one piece, but pale and visibly shaken by what he saw. But what did he see?

Well, join the tour and we will tell you everything he saw that night.  You won’t find it in any newspaper though, he said he could not explain what he saw, and would not write about it until he could explain it.

You don’t care where today's celebrities live!

The ghost stories on LA Ghosts features the stars of every era of the silver screen. But you won’t see any celebrity houses on our tour. You’ll see the theatres that have seen the grandest openings, the glitziest premiers, and more collective Oscars than Katherine Hepburn (with a lifetime total of four, still the most ever!). What you will see is the struggle, the desire, and the passion that has made this town a mecca for the spirits that just can’t let go and haunt the places they remain attached to.

Hollywood has a special feel, we will reveal a new layer to the story for you, for your family, for your date, even for your next staycation. Everyone on an LA Ghosts tour will learn something new about the ghosts of LA.

Get the scariest offers and stay current on sales and events.

LA’s ultimate horror movie filming locations map

The buildings and houses that were made famous in TV and movies, from “Halloween” to “The Craft”

There are a lots of “actually” haunted places in Los Angeles , and then there are the places that are just haunted by pop culture.

For October, here’s our map of houses and other buildings made famous by horror movies and TV shows, from the terrorized high school in A Nightmare on Elm Street to the hospital roamed by Michael Myers in Halloween II to the historic Victorian in Christine. Seek them out at your own peril.

For some real life spooks, check out our map of LA’s haunted attractions .

‘Poltergeist’

The terrifyingly haunted house on an Indian burial ground in Poltergeist is actually (appropriately?) in Simi Valley.

‘The Craft’

The picturesque Verdugo Hills High School tucked away in the North Valley has been a popular filming location for decades, but its use in 1996’s The Craft represents one of its most notable on-screen appearances. In real life, it’s not a private Catholic institution but part of the LAUSD public school system.

‘Halloween II’

Now known as the VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center , this Valley hospital’s exteriors stood in for Haddonfield Memorial in Halloween II , in which the unstoppable Michael Myers tracks down a bad wig-wearing Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis).

‘Poltergeist II’ house

After their Orange County tract home (actually in Simi Valley) literally imploded in the original Poltergeist , the Freelings relocated to this cozy Craftsman-style house “in Phoenix” for the sequel. Of course, the spooks didn't have to travel quite that far to re-terrorize Carol Anne, as the home is actually located in suburban Altadena .

‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’

Fans of the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers can step into the fictional town of Santa Mira by taking a stroll along Sierra Madre’s Kersting Court, which becomes Grand Central for alien intruders in the 1956 classic. The cozy downtown’s “Everytown, America” feel offers a fitting backdrop for whatever Eisenhower-era metaphor you choose to ascribe to the film.

‘Christine’

In the classic murderous car movie Christine, Arnie’s girlfriend Leigh lives in one of the oldest surviving Victorian homes in Monrovia, built in 1887.

‘Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter’

This private home in rural Topanga Canyon was made famous by Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter , the dishonestly-titled slasher sequel that saw Jason Voorhees stalking a new crop of teenagers (including a spasmodically-dancing Crispin Glover ) at Camp Crystal Lake. Its remote location lent itself well to a number of subsequent horror films , including Pumpkinhead, Ed Gein, and Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood.

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’

Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Ennis House has appeared in many, many productions, including the 1959 B-movie House on Haunted Hill and the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (as Spike, Dru, and Angel’s house).

The psychiatric institution where Freddy Krueger stalks his sleep-deprived teenage victims in Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors is actually Royce Hall, one of UCLA’s four original buildings. This Country Club Park house designed by Alfred Rosenheim around 1908 was home to some seriously creepy shit in the first season of American Horror Story . In real life, it’s a work of art, with stained glass windows, a set of Tiffany glass doors, and six Batchelder tile fireplaces.

The Ghostbusters caught their very first ghost (Slimer) in the ballroom at the Sedgewick Hotel, a.k.a. the Millennium Biltmore Downtown. The hotel’s stairway also played the stairway in the insane Shandor building.

Linda Vista Community Hospital

Before the Linda Vista Community Hospital, built in 1905, was turned into housing for seniors, it was featured in loads of horror films and shows. Very few are worth mentioning, but they include Dexter , The Cell , Children of the Corn 666: Isaac’s Return , Day of the Dead 2: Contagium , and Insidious: Chapter 2 .

‘Drag Me to Hell’

The hodgepodge, vaguely Gothic architecture of the historic Doheny Mansion (part of Mount Saint Mary’s Downtown campus) gives it an eerie look that’s perfect for a horror movie. In Sam Raimi’s wicked 2009 spookfest Drag Me to Hell , it hosted the dual seances that unleash the demonic Lamia.

‘Night of the Creeps’ sorority house

The action of Fred Dekker’s cult 1986 sci-fi/zombie movie is centered around the Kappa Delta sorority house, which, in real life, most recently housed the fraternity FIJI, until it was suspended from campus.

‘The Entity’ house

This unassuming El Segundo home played host to an extraordinary battle with the supernatural in the terrifying 1983 shocker, which was inspired by a real-life case of alleged paranormal activity in Culver City. The house of the real-life incident is located about seven miles north.

‘Mulholland Drive’

Some would argue Mulholland Drive isn’t a horror movie, but the infamous scene at Winkie’s Diner qualifies as a terrifying short film all on its own. In reality, the Sunset Boulevard greasy spoon—actually called Caesar's—is located far from Hollywood in the South Bay city of Gardena.

Most of the high school scenes for the original Carrie (e.g., Carrie covered in pig’s blood) were shot at the former campus of Hermosa Beach’s Pier Avenue Junior High. Today, it’s a community center.

In their space, you can find ouija boards, tarot cards, horror-inspired clothing, and many more goodies that fit your mystic needs. It’s the one-stop-shop for all things paranormal and mysterious. As soon as you walk in, you’re immediately transported to a notable ’90s movie scene. The dagger acts like a key, unlocking sounds, displays—and even a phone call from a certain person fans will recognize. Hint: He wants to know what your favorite scary movie is.

Horror Slasher Museum

The entire time, patrons are welcome to walk around the experience and use the available props to their advantage. Along the way, you’ll be able to take in and fully experience the horror movie-inspired sets. Remember, this museum is also part photo-op, allowing you to hit your favorite movie poster poses.

Although Halloween Events are typically live ( haunted houses , costume parties, etc.), Los Angeles offers plenty of Halloween horror movie screenings every October. Hollywood and the surrounding environs are home to several repertory and specialty theatres; local organizations screen movies in unusual, outdoor settings (parks, cemeteries), and even the major theatre chains get in on the action.

Many of these venues program lengthy series of classic, cult, and contemporary horror titles; others squeeze in a few scare films into otherwise Halloween-free programming. The locations are spread around the Greater Los Angeles area, so you need not live in Hollywood in order to enjoy a little Hollywood Gothique Cinema.

In short, there is no shortage of Halloween Horror Movie Screenings in L.A.

Anyone But You Sony/Columbia Pictures Net Profit: $103M

Sony development executive Maia Eyre brought this Will Gluck-Ilana Wolpert project into the studio. Mix in the genius, sizzling-hot pairing of Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney and Top Gun: Maverick ‘s Glen Powell and you get a long holiday honeymoon for Sony in this romantic comedy revival. Although streaming has vacuumed up the genre, Sony believed that date movies still exist. Anyone But You opened under the radar over the four-day Christmas weekend to $8 million and yielded over a 10x multiple at the domestic box office with $88M-plus, and $219M worldwide. Sony pulled a page out of its Spider-Man: No Way Home playbook and had Sweeney and Powell do their interviews and social media stunts together, highlighting their chemistry and bantering. Sweeney’s social reach at the time of the pic’s opening was near 17M. Marketing costs were low on this at $65M global given the big push on digital and social, particularly TikTok, where the following pieces took off: the duo’s lip sync of Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten” (a near 28M views) and “The Dirtiest Pick-Up Lines” bit (near 25M). Pic’s pay-one is through Sony’s rich Netflix deal.

THE BOX SCORE

Insidious: The Red Door Sony/Blumhouse/Stage 6 Films Net Profit: $92M

The Nun II New Line/Atomic Monster Net Profit: $85M

This is evidence of how the power of a brand works at the box office through thick and thin. While several movies shifted out of the fall and late August due to the actors strike with performers unable to promote, New Line kept the sequel to its highest-grossing Conjuring movie, The Nun ($366M), on the calendar. People went, with the sequel about a demon-deflecting nun opening to $32.6M in the post-Labor Day Warner Bros frame for hot horror pics and legging out to $86.3M stateside and $269.5M global. The pic’s director Michael Chaves, after being discovered by New Line  execs Walter Hamada and Dave Neustadter and assigned to helm 2019’s  The Curse of La Llorona (Small Movie, Big Profits title from that year’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament), was invited to take the reins here .

Scream VI Spyglass/Dimension/Paramount Net Profit: $60M

After rebooting the Scream franchise in 2022 ($81.6M domestic, $137.7M global) with stars from the original franchise plus new ones, and genre filmmakers Radio Silence in the directors chair(s), a sequel was quickly ordered. What sent this one to another stratosphere was the halo effect of its star Jenna Ortega , who was coming off of Netflix’s most watched series ever, Wednesday. The stabbing action saw her and Scream 2022’s star Melissa Barrera head to NYC for the first time in the franchise. Fans loved it enough at a B+, the same high grade as the previous Scream and still a best for the franchise. Big turnout by Latino and Hispanic moviegoers at 38% delivered the biggest opening for the Dimension series at $44.4M domestic, which yielded $108.2M domestic, and $169M worldwide, the second highest-grossing Scream movie ever after the 1996 original. Spyglass is rebooting this movie again for part 7, with the exit of Ortega and the firing of Barrera due to her online Gaza War remarks. The original franchise scribe Kevin Williamson will direct, with series OGs Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox in talks.

Evil Dead Rise New Line Net Profit: $46M

What happens when you take exciting movies and pivot them from streaming to theaters? You make money. This New Line reboot of the Sam Raimi franchise was destined to go to HBO Max, ordered up during the Jason Kilar-WarnerMedia era when they were pumping millions into original films for the service. Warner Bros Discovery boss David Zaslav has the studio shift away from that strategy (for the most part — yes there are exceptions of the reverse, i.e., New Line’s Stephen King movie Salem’s Lot transitioning from theaters to Max), with Evil Dead Rise being one of those titles. Warner Bros distribution and marketing execs noticed how the trailer for Evil Dead Rise electrified at CineEurope and opted to give the movie a domestic release; first firing it up out of SXSW. The pic got a B CinemaScore, higher than the 2013 reboot of Evil Dead which landed a C+. Every horror movie had a marketing hook that resonates and is creepy, re: the masked guy in  The Black Phone  or the wicked smiling people in  Smile . Here it’s the evil mom, and the trailer where she’s trapped in the elevator. Evil Dead Rise opened to a solid $24.5M stateside in the face of a marketplace that was still being dominated by Super Mario Bros in its third weekend. Final take was $67.2M domestic and $147M worldwide.

The sexy tennis drama “ Challengers ” won the box office this weekend with $15 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Zendaya and castmates Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor have been on a globetrotting press tour to get the word out about Italian director Luca Guadagnino’s original film, which opened in 3,477 locations in the U.S. and Canada.

“We’re obviously very, very happy with the number,” said Kevin Wilson, who heads theatrical distribution for Amazon Studios and MGM. “Looking at the audience who showed up, it’s really encouraging. It’s not the easiest audience to get to theaters.”

Women made up 58% of ticket buyers, who also skewed younger overall: 41% were between the ages of 18 and 24.

Ticket sales from large format screens, including IMAX, made up about 40% of the opening weekend grosses. According to PostTrak exit poll reported by Deadline, 55% of audiences said they went to see the film because of Zendaya. In fact, this weekend, Zendaya movies accounted for around 26% of the overall box office with the re-release of “ Dune: Part Two ” in IMAX, which made nearly $2 million.

The 27-year-old actor has been part of some of the most successful franchises of the last few years, including the “Spider-Man” and “Dune” movies. In both cases those were supporting roles in massive brand-name properties, but her eye-catching red carpet looks also often make headlines. “Challengers” would be the first real test of her ability to “open” a film on her own star and MGM and Amazon were not going to risk doing it without her.

The studio had originally planned to release “Challengers” in the fall of 2023, with a picturesque launch at the Venice Film Festival. But when the actors went on strike last July, the studio made the decision to scuttle the festival premiere and move the film to this weekend when they could safely assume the strike would be resolved. Zendaya sported many tennis-themed looks, styled by Law Roach, for her appearances.

“It would be hard to argue that we should have released this movie when she wasn’t able to support,” Wilson said.

He gave special credit to the studio’s publicity and marketing teams for orchestrating a world tour that resulted in several viral fashion moments.

Reviews have been largely positive for the R-rated movie, which teases a steamy and competitive love triangle between the tennis players. It currently has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and got a B+ CinemaScore from opening day audiences.

Guadagnino’s last film “ Bones and All ,” starring Zendaya’s “Dune” co-star Timothée Chalamet, made $15.2 million in its entire run. By midweek, “Challengers” expected to surpass “Call Me By Your Name” ($18 million) to become Guadagnino’s highest grossing film.

For Amazon MGM Studios, the value also extends beyond the box office driving a “downstream value” for Amazon, including when “Challengers” eventually makes its way to Prime Video.

“I’ve always believed that theatrical is the best way to launch some of these films,” Wilson said. “When this thing gets to Prime Video, it’s obviously going to perform at a level that would be much greater than had it just gone directly to the platform. Theatrical is only a piece of it.”

Second place went to the faith-based film “Unsung Hero,” which made an estimated $7.8 million from 2,832 locations. It’s based on the true story of the Smallbone family, and the rise of their children Rebecca St. James, and sons Joel and David (for KING + COUNTRY) in the country music scene. Joel Smallbone directed, co-wrote and portrays his father David.

The Lionsgate film, which was made for only $6 million, scored a rare A+ CinemaScore and has a 100% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The critic’s score is a much more tempered 58%. Audiences were overwhelmingly female (69%) and over 25 (91%).

Third place went to “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” with $7.2 million in its fifth weekend. In fourth place, A24’s “Civil War” also added $7 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to $56.2 million. And rounding out the top five was the horror movie “Abigail” with $5.3 million.

“April of 2024 provided an opportunity for interesting, innovative and critically acclaimed films to be at the top of the box office,” said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore. “It was a great month for moviegoers looking for something beyond the typical summer blockbusters.”

The box office might not compare to last year when “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was still dominating, but Dergarabedian said establishing audience goodwill is important as well.

Next weekend the summer movie season kicks off with the Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt action-comedy “ The Fall Guy .”

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “Challengers,” $15 million.

2. “Unsung Hero,” $7.8 million.

3. “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” $7.2 million.

4. “Civil War,” 7 million.

5. “Abigail,” $5.3 million.

6. “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” $3.9 million

7. “Kung Fu Panda 4,” $3.6 million.

8. “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” $3.3 million.

9. “Dune: Part Two,” $2 million.

10. “Boy Kills World,” $1.7 million.

The great canal caper: Feds accuse former irrigation manager of decades-long theft

In the western, mostly dry San Joaquin Valley, “water is liquid gold,” according to hydrographer Mark Walsh.

“If you got it, you can make a ton of money,” he recently told The Times’ Jessica Garrison.

As Jessica reported this week, federal officials say a local irrigation official was cashing in on that liquid gold mine by surreptitiously stealing supplies.

Prosecutors allege that Dennis Falaschi, former general manager at the Panoche Water District, orchestrated a decades-long theft by siphoning $25 million worth of water from a federal aqueduct and selling it to farmers and regional water districts.

Volume-wise, Falaschi allegedly stole 130,000 acre-feet of water between 1992 and 2015, officials said. That’s “enough to supply a small city for several years,” Jessica noted.

“In a state with prolonged bouts of drought and unquenching thirst, stolen water is an indelible part of California lore,” she wrote. “But this was not Los Angeles’ brazen gambit to take water from the Owens Valley. … The water grab described in a federal indictment allegedly happened cat burglar-style, siphoned through a secret pipe, often after hours, to avoid detection.”

State prosecutors filed felony charges against Falaschi in 2018 for misspending public funds. They claim he used the proceeds to pay for housing and personal vehicles for his employees, plus slot machines, concert tickets and home remodeling.

In April 2022, a federal grand jury indicted Falaschi for allegedly masterminding the theft of government water and lying about it on his income on his taxes. The indictment alleged that Falaschi made nearly $900,000 in salary and unreported income just in 2016.

Falaschi has denied the government’s allegations.

So how did the alleged scheme work? According to the indictment, Falaschi directed some of his workers to exploit a leak in the Delta-Mendota Canal way back in 1992. That’s when a worker allegedly notified him that a turnout on the canal previously cemented shut was leaking. Falaschi is accused of directing workers to divert federal water into his district’s system — often under cover of night — using that old turnout.

The lifted water was then allegedly sold to farmers or sent back to the canal in exchange for federal credits. Falaschi had employees falsely classify the stolen water as reclaimed runoff from local farms, the indictment stated.

Despite his alleged crimes, some farmers see Falaschi as a sort of hydrologic Robin Hood, who helped struggling farms get water amid drought.

“He didn’t cause the leaking,” farmer Joe Del Bosque said. “He just happened to take advantage of it for the good of the farmers.”

Given that the alleged water thefts occurred over 23 years, some wonder: “Why did state and federal water officials take so long to notice?”

Several state and federal agencies, including the FBI and the federal Bureau of Reclamation, declined to speak with Jessica for her subscriber exclusive article, which you can read here .
